welcome note.
O “I am delighted to announce that the next piece of the jigsaw is now in place”
n behalf of my team, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Canary Wharf. Whenever you talk to people about Canary Wharf, they always mention the tower – One Canada Square – and with good reason. It is emblematic, representing the remarkable transformation of 97 acres of formerly derelict Docklands into worldclass, premium office, retail and residential space. I am delighted to announce that the next piece of the jigsaw is now in place; three years before Crossrail trains are due to run through the station, Crossrail Place is open, to the great benefit of all Canary Wharf workers, residents and visitors alike. The Crossrail Place development, which you will have seen taking shape over the past six years, has been likened to a ship moored in the dock. It reflects Canary Wharf’s past as a centre for global maritime commerce and its future, integrating it further with the local community and the rest of London. I invite you to explore this new space, home to a diverse range of restaurants, stores and services. Joining our current roster of both British and international brands across Canary Wharf are top food destinations: Big Easy, The Breakfast Club, Chai Ki, Ippudo, Poncho 8, Sticks‘n’Sushi as well as juice hotspot CPress and Notes Coffee Roasters & Wine Bar. Sports enthusiasts will no doubt be excited by the addition of Bespoke Cycling, Snow+Rock, Psycle London and
Sports Bar & Grill. NatWest bank, healthcare specialist Bupa, niche Scandi brand Tiger and Canary Wharf’s first boutique cinema, Everyman, have also launched here too for your enjoyment. As Canary Wharf’s development continues to prosper, I am delighted to announce the forthcoming New Phase, a 23-acre mixed-use expansion to the east of the existing Canary Wharf Estate. The New Phase will include over 3,200 new homes and will offer residents a unique opportunity to live in one of the most desirable, safe and well-connected Estates in Europe, especially with the arrival of Crossrail. The expansion to a 128 acre Estate will also add an exciting level of dynamism and energy to the Estate, illustrating the strength of our culture, and complementing our established, yet diverse lifestyle offering. Our lifestyle offering now includes over 300 shops, cafes, bars, restaurants and services. We have created a destination for shopping and leisure and in the coming years it will continue to grow, evolve and diversify. I hope you enjoy all that we have to offer, now and in the future.

Design Intervention. The Crossrail station in Canary Wharf is the largest on the line, with a design that is bold, beautiful and iconic. Take a closer look at this Spectacular structure and its seven-storey space
‘The 15 Billion Pound Railway’, more widely known as Crossrail, was the subject of the BBC’s recent three-part documentary of the same name. architecture and design fans were agog as cameras went behind-the-scenes on Europe’s largest engineering project
I
n the third episode, where the focus is squarely on Canary Wharf’s station, staggering statistics pepper every sentence. Canary Wharf Contractors’ Operations Executive Michael Bryant explained that 24 trains will pass through the station every hour carrying 1,500 people each. Retail areas across four storeys will cover an enviable 115,000 square feet and 25 million passengers are expected to visit every year. Documentary narrator Julian Barratt explains the enormity of the task facing construction crews: “A team battles to put together the giant jigsaw that will become a cathedral-sized station at Canary Wharf.
12
It’s so big, they have to build it in a dock, and underwater.” Workers who appear in the documentary are understandably proud of their work, describing parts of the station as “awesome” and “iconic”, that they are “honoured to take part in such a grand project”. Enormous stainless steel ventilation covers are described as “absolute perfection” and one worker enthuses that “the roof is getting more beautiful every day”. Indeed this roof, with its intricate lattice of pale wooden beams and silver brackets, is the station’s pièce de résistance; quite literally its crowning glory. Many of those who live and work in the area have kept a close eye on the exciting progress of the project and been part of its evolution. Crossrail Place is, of course, more advanced now than when the documentary was shot. Now that it’s winter 2015, the roof and the development below it are looking precisely as the designers had hoped they would. The creation of this station, which is the length of nearly three football pitches, was carried out with nothing less than >>

military precision. A vast, watertight concrete box was sunk in the dock to form the station walls and concrete pillars anchor it into the dock bed. After the water was drained out of the North Dock of West India Quay (40 Olympic swimming pools’ worth), four floors were created below water level and three floors created above. It then needed platforms, a ventilation system, six lifts and 19 escalators. However, Bryant says that the toughest task was “to assemble the unique roof from 1,500 timber beams”. This roof arches over a public garden (open from 6am until dusk) which was designed by Fosters + Partners, famous for the Millennium Bridge and The Gherkin. The brief, Bryant explains, was to create “something that is totally different”. Arriving in a kit of more than 2,500 pieces, this “giant 3D jigsaw” took six months to assemble. The Great Exhibition’s iconic Crystal Palace

was also prefabricated in this way. The latticed wooden frame was padded out with air-filled plastic pillows, enclosing the landscaped park which visitors are already making the most of. There are three operational floors beneath Park Level with restaurants, services and an additional retail floor level due to open to coincide with the Crossrail network.

ore than one billion passengers travel on the Underground each year. As London’s popularity and population booms (by 2031 it is estimated there will be 1.8 million more people living and working in the capital) it is getting even busier. Crossrail, the biggest engineering project in Europe, is poised to keep the city moving. By 2018, it will increase London’s rail capacity to an estimated 200 million passengers per year. The seed of this epic feat of engineering began to germinate more than 40 years ago in the 1974 London Rail Study. This was almost certainly the first time it was acknowledged that Crossrail needed to be more than just another Tube line. For London and the surrounding suburbs to get
the most benefit, the study envisioned it to be “a mainline railway that just happened to spend a good deal of time underground”. Nothing came to fruition until the Crossrail Bill was enacted in July 2008. A route was confirmed and the basic principle was established; the cost would be shared between the Government, TfL and the business community. It was here in Canary Wharf that Crossrail finally broke ground in May 2009. Environmental considerations have been essential throughout Canary Wharf’s involvement in the project from the start. When ground was broken, barges shifted 300,000 tonnes of excavated materials down the Thames to Essex where a nature reserve is being created. Employment in Canary Wharf has increased significantly over the last decade and numbers of visitors and local residents are rising fast. We look forward to the day that Crossrail delivers on its pledge to ease congestion, increase capacity and allow us to move around London more efficiently.

Passionate about the pit. Paul Corrett, founder of Big Easy, explains why Southern hospitality sets his restaurant apart When did you fall for the Deep South style of cooking, drinking, and entertaining? Throughout my years travelling in the southern part of the United States, I loved the laid-back attitude of the people. Louisiana’s mix of cocktail culture and live music was a big inspiration for Big Easy, as were the flavours of a Texan barbeque, Florida’s seafood and sauces from Kansas. Why did you choose Canary Wharf? We encourage interaction; with one’s environment, with one’s food, and with each other. Eating or drinking at Big Easy Canary Wharf is an experience created by our research of the rich history of the area. It was once an international centre of rum and sugar trading, which you will see reflected in the 19th century dockside themed decor (equipped with genuine artefacts, including an antique cocktail shaker). We think the work-hard, play-hard inhabitants of the area will be just as excited by the prospect of
being immersed in this era as we are. It’s an exciting place and we like that energy. What makes your Bar.B.Q authentic? I’m very well acquainted with the Bar.B.Q process. We had three 1,500lb smokers imported from the States and lowered into our kitchen by a floating crane. Our very own pit master, also imported from the USA, smokes all our meat in-house on hickory wood. The food is just one aspect; what is your top drink recommendation? That depends on what you’re eating. Beer and Bar.B.Q food are a match made in heaven, and we have 14 different types of beer on tap so there’s plenty from which to choose. If you’re having seafood or a steak, I’d try one of our rare (and incredible) wines from the USA. For drinks, I recommend sitting in the tiki lounge rum bar with a Caribbean-inspired cocktail mixed with one of our 100 rums. We even do a proper afternoon tea, too.

Why did you decide to open in Canary Wharf? The space was key. We have fantastic high ceilings, we are surrounded by water and had plenty of room to create a look that most people would never associate with Indian cuisine. It was also exciting to take on the challenge of being the first Indian restaurant in Canary Wharf. How would you explain your breakfast offering to those who have never been? Our breakfast offering features childhood favourites of mine; familiar dishes with Indian twists. For example chaas (Indian buttermilk) pancakes with honey and maple syrup, alongside the kind of spiced egg dishes that are popular across the sub-continent. Chai Ki, Crossrail Place, 020 7408 7630

With such exacting standards, coffee lovers can commonly be found gathered around the dedicated brew bar at Notes Coffee Roasters & Wine Bar, eagerly working their way through the constantly rotating menu of filter coffees on offer. Each morning, the grinder settings and coffee-to-water ratios are adjusted to get the best flavour out of every single bean, with the coffees made throughout the day precision-brewed to reflect the morning’s results. In August 2013, Notes opened its own roastery, which means it can ship in fresh bean harvests
from around the world and roast them to its own exacting standards before delivering them straight to its stores. Notes’ roasts are famously light, which allows for more delicate flavours to come through. Plus Notes’ baristas are sure to never burn the milk so each cup retains its natural sweetness. Notes is also home to a seasonal menu offering everything from pastries to poached eggs, not to mention a selection of wines as carefully chosen as the coffee beans – ideal for cosy evenings or for those of you who need more than coffee to keep you stimulated. A bowl full. With Ippudo bringing authentic Japanese ramen to the UK, marketing coordinator Swann Péré talks reinvention and why variety really is the spice OF LIFE
34
How would you sum up the atmosphere at Ippudo? Ippudo Canary Wharf is a slice of authentic Japanese cuisine on your doorstep: vibrant, energetic and warm. Slurp up the delicious bowls of ramen and enjoy chilled sake. What drew Ippudo to Canary Wharf? It’s a magnet for people used to travelling internationally and those who are aware of the trends on a global scale, so we thought it fitting that Ippudo, with its presence in 12 countries, would adapt well. Canary Wharf is undergoing an incredible transformation; it’s not just a business district and it attracts people from all areas in London. Crossrail Place is a prime example with its rooftop garden where businessmen and women, tourists and local Londoners can relax and come down to have a bowl of our ramen. Can we expect anything different from the other international locations here? We do expect a lot of high performing businesspeople who expect nothing but the
best, so we will bring to them the best of Japan, in terms of both products and service. The New York outpost has an almost cult following. Are you expecting that to translate across the pond? We hope so, but our ultimate objective is to have as many people as possible enjoying dining with us. Of course, a great number of customers is rewarding, but their experience is what’s most important. What ramen camp are you in - traditional or new age? Our mantra is “continuously innovate to remain true” and so we strive to reinvent ourselves constantly. Although we come from the Hakata region, and therefore our tonkotsu ramen is well-known, we also have a great variety in our product portfolio ranging from traditional and regional ramen from different parts of Japan to ramen such as a French consommé, or those that use ingredients like foie gras and truffles. We showcase our creativity with an event we call “Ramen of the 4 seasons” in which the founder himself follows his inspiration and serves ramen to people around the world. What’s your favourite Ippudo dish? For the first timers, I would recommend a Shiromaru Hakata Classic. It’s a creamy soup, the result of hours of cooking, matched with home-made, ultra-thin noodles and topped with lean pork chashu. Ippudo, Crossrail Place, 020 3326 9485

wrap it up. Poncho 8’s managing director Michaela Roberts explains why healthconscious mexican food is the next big thing in fast dining What makes Poncho 8 different? Poncho 8 brings a fun and vibrant Mexican food offering to Canary Wharf. We pride ourselves on the quality and freshness of our food, we’re mad about burritos and think nothing is quite as special as a Poncho 8 burrito. Why did you choose Canary Wharf for your next site? Canary Wharf is an iconic location in a beautiful and modern part of London. We’re located on the water’s edge so you can kick back and chill with a burrito and admire the amazing views. You can eat in and soak in the ambiance or take-away and stroll around Crossrail Place. Does Poncho 8 at Canary Wharf differ from other branches? Poncho 8 Canary Wharf is open seven days a week, unlike some of the other City locations,
allowing us to cater for office workers during the week and weekend shoppers and residents on Saturday and Sunday. The Canary Wharf store will also be one of the first to launch deliveries in partnership with Deliveroo, further extending our reach to local residents. Are there health-conscious options? From burritos to tacos, salads and nachos, we serve a range of food that’s fast, fresh and filling. For the more health-conscious try the Low Carb Box, designed to keep energy levels high throughout the day and provide a filling, but low calorie meal. Alternatively try a Salad Box or Nacho Box, which are similar to burritos but with extra crunchy salad or corn nachos (baked, not fried), instead of a tortilla. Offering a host of exclusive services and products, including advanced bikefitting, custom bike building and high-quality parts and accessories, Bespoke is Canary Wharf’s propagator for alL cycling-related queries

espoke founder Barry Scott, is a cycling enthusiast through and through. With big hitters from the worlds of professional sport, TV and business as their clients, his team is made up of the best people to find you the right set of wheels. “We can’t stress enough how important it is to have a correctly-fitted bike, in terms of injury prevention and peak performance, not to mention comfort. You should enjoy your time cycling as much as possible”. Bespoke offers a 4D bike fit for your existing bike, but if you buy a new ride, you’re in for quite the treat. One of Barry’s favourite brands is Parlee; they make beautiful carbon frames and Bicycling
magazine wrote of its ESX that “it is, without question, the finest road machine I have ever ridden... the end result is simply perfect”. High praise indeed. Bespoke will do a full bike fit to find the perfectlysized frame for you and when it comes to customised paint options, your wish is their command. You can be out and riding it in under five weeks. For those who are looking for a more casual route into the high-energy world of cycling, Bespoke also hosts a wide range of stock-bikes from some of the world’s best brands including Cannondale, Specialized and Colnago. “Our product range is second to none,” says Barry. “We carry brands that we truly believe to be the best in the world.” Fundamental to the birth of Bespoke was Barry’s desire to own a bike shop that would marry world-class products, professionalism and integrity with a high level of customer service. Launching a shop that is unique in the industry, Barry saw customers as personal clients, picking team members based on their experience, love and passion for cycling. He chose Bespoke’s products by testing them to see if they were good enough to

make him want to buy them; now that’s dedication to the cause. Along with bikes, Bespoke also stocks the finest in cyclingwear, aimed at creating the ultimate experience from tyre to toe. “The correct clothing and gear will increase your comfort and allow you to concentrate on “We carry brands that we truly believe to be the best in the world” the task in hand – riding your bike”. And it’s all true; not only does cycling provide a fantastic form of exercise, it’s also great fun. It’s little wonder Bespoke is gaining such momentum and why numerous
celebrities, of whom Barry speaks of with the utmost discretion, use his services. When it comes to riding around Canary Wharf, Barry recommends using our gateway to the South East: “The great thing about Canary Wharf is our connections to the Sustrans cycle network. Route 1 passes really close by and actually links Dover to John O’ Groats! Riding east along the Thames is pretty amazing; [it] gives you some perspective on the size of London, but also how quickly you can be out into the countryside”. Barry suggests that you finish your ride back in Canary Wharf, refuel at one of the many cafés and restaurants, then join him watching the rugby in Sports Bar & Grill. bespoke, Crossrail Place

We look forward to welcoming new and existing customers.” The centre will house 17 consultation rooms and eight dental surgeries within an 8,000 sq ft clinic, a wide range of services will be available for locals and busy working professionals alike. Live Music at
Boisdale. Dust off your flares for a night of timeless pop classics
Dancing queens (and kings) get ready for a big night at Boisdale Canary Wharf. ABBA MANIA, the world’s number one touring ABBA production, is set to hit Boisdale Canary Wharf for one night only. Ring in 2016 retro-style with a night of legendary pop music. From Mamma Mia to Voulez Vous, you’ll barely be able to stop tapping your toes for long enough to enjoy the set menu of wild venison and 40 day dry-aged Aberdeenshire fillet of beef. No doubt Jools Holland (the venue’s patron of music and presenter of Jools’ Annual Hootenanny, a New Year’s Eve small screen staple) would approve of you working your way through Boisdale’s excellent wine and whisky list whilst you dance the night away. b oisdale Canary Wharf, Cabot Place, 020 7715 5818

elaborate Robatayaki dishes inspired by japanese tradition
ROKA’s robata grill sits in full view of diners as the restaurant’s centrepiece. Inspired by fishermen off the north coast of Japan, who would cook fish over charcoals aboard their boats and share the food with one another using their oars, the beating heart of ROKA forms an integral design feature, from which redefined versions of classic Japanese dishes flow. Overlooking Canada Square Park, amidst the backdrop of Canary Wharf’s dramatic London skyline, enjoy dishes such as sweet potato baked in bamboo husk or baby back ribs glazed with spiced stock and sprinkled with cashew nuts. r oka, The Park Pavilion, 020 7636 5228

Lights, camera, action! WITH THE CANARY WHARF BRANCH OF independent cinema group Everyman NOW OPEN, CEO Crispin Lilly reveals why he set his sights on bringing the unique silver screen experience to Crossrail Place The rise of the independent cinema is nothing new. since it was founded in 2000. Back then, entrepreneur Daniel Broch bought the historic Everyman Cinema in Hampstead, which dates back to 1933, and set about restoring it to its former glory. The independent network has since found homes for screens everywhere, from Belsize Park to Birmingham, including its latest branch which is now open in Crossrail Place, Canary Wharf. The boutique (and decidedly grownup) cinema experience is not simply a question of refreshments and seating; Everyman prides itself on integrating with the local community. The cinema is now open for business, but for those who have yet to visit, Crispin gives a teaser of what to expect. “Our aim is to
