For better or worse Fulham’s historic library has said ‘I do’ to letting couple’s tie the knot or have a civil ceremony at the venue. To celebrate the Grade II-listed library becoming a wedding venue, Hammersmith & Fulham Council has agreed to waive the hall hire fee for the first couple to get married there. Close to Parsons Green station, the library’s main hall can hold up to 120 guests and still features the original wooden book cabinets – ideal for book lovers in love. lbhf.gov.uk

By royal appointment Fulham may have its very own palace, but it doesn’t tend to see many royals passing through; that was until Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall popped by for dinner. Fulham Palace recently held a Tudor-themed banquet in aid of its current £3.7million restoration project, in which the Duchess of Cornwall was the guest of honour. Also in attendance were Sir Timothy and Lady Sainsbury, BBC presenter Sophie Raworth and Fulham Patrons. fulhampalace.org

Up the garden path After lying empty for more than two years, the Church Commissioners’ Fulham Palace Garden Centre is set to be taken over by local garden centre, The Chelsea Gardener. In 2014, the iconic plot of land was closed by the Prince’s Trust charity after it was deemed no longer financially viable. It was eventually sold to the Church Commissioners in May of this year. Now the Chelsea Gardener has plans to take over and re-open the half-acre plot which includes a glasshouse, offices, workshops and outdoor space. chelseagardener.com

Queen’s Speech Whether you’re spending Christmas in Fulham this year or going further afield, chances are that at 3pm, we’ll all be huddled around the TV watching Her Majesty deliver her annual speech to the nation. It’s a staple of any Christmas Day but after a turbulent 2016, we wonder what she’ll have to say this year.
You’ll normally find Fulham resident Lance Pierson hosting his Poetry Enjoyment Group at Fulham Library, but as a Christmas treat for you all, he’ll be at The London Appreciation Society with soprano Belinda Yates and pianist Heather Chamberlain. Look after your skin this winter with a signature facial from The Beauty Clinic. The Journal finds out more emily adams
T
hey say that the best things come in small packages and when I arrive at The Beauty Clinic, a pocket-sized health and beauty salon, I’m hopeful that the saying will ring true. Owned by Lucie Gojova, it’s hidden down Fulham Palace Road and for such a small space, the list of treatments on offer is more extensive than you’d expect. I can only assume there’s a wardrobe-style Narnia contraption where all these services take place. I’m here to try out one of the clinic’s signature facials, the Mary Cohr Catiovital treatment, a deep-cleansing, anti-ageing and hydrating facial that lasts just over an hour. Although the space is limited, it has been carefully thought out and I am led to one of
a handful of small treatment rooms. There’s a bit of awkward shuffling around each other as we get ready but once I’m on the treatment bed, I instantly relax. My therapist Veronica Bostolache starts by talking me through my skin. As I expect, she tells me that it’s extremely de-hydrated, but that it’s oily too; something I’ve never been told before. The moisturiser I normally use to combat dry skin is blocking the pores that produce oil. My skin needs serious help according to Veronica.
Cohr machine, negative and positive electrodes are introduced to one another and I feel sharp pinches across my face. This opens my pores and helps the serum to penetrate deeper into the skin, including Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C and Fruity Acids, so it can reap more of the benefits. The saying may be ‘beauty is pain’, but I’m happy when this part of the facial is over. Then it’s back to cooling creams, relaxing hand and arm massages, and all the pain is forgotten. By the end of
“The treatment deep-cleanses my skin with the use of a thermal mask, giving the same effect as being in a sauna” The treatment, uses Mary Cohr products, a French brand introduced to the UK 25 years ago and deep-cleanses my skin with the use of a thermal mask, giving the same effect as being in a sauna. It helps to open my pores, allowing my skin to breathe and absorb the ingredients with ease. A thick, cooling serum is then applied to my face before an extraction begins. There’s no denying it, this part hurts. Using a specialised Mary
the hour, my skin is visibly healthier, more hydrated and a whole lot softer. Pleased with the instant results, Veronica tells me that although a facial is a treat for your skin, it’s vital to look after it at home too. Exfoliating two times a week will help clear any dirt from your skin, keep your skin hydrated and ready for winter. 413a Fulham Palace Road, SW6 6SX, 020 7736 7676, beautyclinicfulham.co.uk

The Journal tries out local gastropub The Wellington emily adams
T
ucked away at the end of Haldane Road, is The Wellington, a recent addition to the local scene. Although it only opened five months ago, it has just launched its kitchen, with acclaimed chef Aidan McGee, offering hearty family favourites. I feel instantly welcomed by the warm, lively atmosphere and I’m not the only one – there’s not an empty seat in the house. The décor is fun and quirky with dark green washed walls, a wooden horse that makes an alternative bar stool and tables that double up as board games. Yellow and red Hollywood mirror light bulbs line the top of the double-sided bar which separates the restaurant from a more casual dining area. My table is printed with a backgammon board and I spy a retro arcade machine too, but before I can get my game face on, it’s time for some food.
The menu features several sharing options including The Welly Board, a starter for two people so tasty, you’ll instantly forget you ordered a main course too. There’s a house terrine, confit chicken, homemade piccalilli, celeriac roulade, cheese and freshly baked artisan bread that you won’t be able to say no to, but trust me: stop eating and prepare for the main. Between my guest and I, we order a winter warming truffle mac ‘n’ cheese and the beef cheek with smoked mash and heritage carrots. It’s a closely fought match, but the melt in the mouth beef wins the battle. If you can handle it (and I’d recommend it) savour the crowdpleasing sticky toffee pudding too before you sit back and settle in for a game of backgammon or two. 56 Haldane Road, SW6 7EU, 020 7385 8638, thewellingtonpub.com

Keep calm and design The Journal catches up with interior architect and designer Emmanuelle Sirven, to talk familyfriendly designs and her future in Fulham emily adams
S
ince the Journal met Emmanuelle in July this year, she’s been busy settling herself into the local area, working on a number of projects and has already got plenty of plans for 2017. Coming from a large busy interior design company in Paris, Fulham is a refreshing change of pace for Emmanuelle. “Life is a lot calmer here,” she tells me happily. “I am enjoying getting to know the local area.” Working on fewer projects in London has meant she has been able to give each one her full attention. At the moment, she tells me that she’s designing a house on Ladbroke Square, that there’s a project on Kensington High Street and she’s been working closely with the Bismut brothers of architects Bismut & Bismut. She’s also working with French design company Silvera, the latest arrival on the King’s Road, set to open next month, and is acting as a local assistant. With the owners based in France and Emmanuelle a local resident, she works as their representative at technical meetings and her interior design background makes her an ideal choice

for making sure the designs come to life. Not only does she have the French flair for interior design, but she has the practical knowledge of working in London and across countries. Liaising between clients in France and the UK has now become a regular occurrence for Emmanuelle and has given her the chance to meet new people in the industry and build her own network of contacts across London. “Working with other people, companies and designers has opened a lot of doors. It is always helpful to discuss solutions to problems with others such as tricky layouts. There’s not just one solution to a problem,” she explains. When we spoke last, it was finding those answers to clients’ problems that Emmanuelle told me she loved most about her job. Whether it’s creating extra storage for a bedroom or making space for another bathroom, she thrives on creating designs that work for a modern day lifestyle. “The client is King,” she says and I don’t doubt that Emmanuelle does everything she can to meet someone’s demands, but I also know her style of design is about

For example, I would buy little objects and accessories to transform my house like decorative cushions.” By keeping the basics the same and updating it every now and then, Emmanuelle says it’s the small things that create the biggest impact. So when it comes to preparing her home for Christmas, what does she opt for? “You don’t need lots of decorations or a huge Christmas tree. Memorable Moves What happens when you need to relocate the engines from Concorde? Abels Moving Services tells all
w
hat does a sevenfoot high ornamental elephant, Giovanni Bellini’s magnificent Renaissance altarpiece Madonna and Child enthroned with St Peter and St Paul, a 36-feet long totem pole and the Olympus engines from a Concorde supersonic airliner have in common? The answer is that they’re just some of the unusual items moved by Abels Moving Services over the years. John Watson, managing director of Abels which holds a Royal Warrant, says, “We have actually moved the seven-foot high ornamental elephant several times, most memorably into and out of an eighth floor London apartment.” The 36-foot totem pole was immensely heavy and required a special transit case and its own 40-foot container to protect it on its journey to the USA. In fact, Abels frequently makes custom transit cases for its clients’ items such as paintings, mirrors and also statues. “Many of our moves involve the packing, storage
26
and moving of valuable pieces of artwork,” John explains, “but few are as valuable as Bellini’s Madonna and Child enthroned with St Peter and St Paul. It is dated 1505, valued at £6million, and we relocated it on behalf of Norwich Castle Museum.” While it needed steady hands to safely pack and transport the Bellini altarpiece, another move requiring similar diligence came to light when Abels’ customer services manager inspected the cellar of a large manor house. It was quickly discovered that it contained more than 5,000
Moves often turn out to be more complicated than at first sight bottles of wine. Each one had to be listed, packed in order, transported in a temperaturecontrolled vehicle and replaced in the same order, and Abels succeeded without spilling a drop! Moves often turn out to be more complicated than at first sight. One small bungalow proved to be choc-a-bloc with seafaring memorabilia, with everything from barographs to ship’s wheels, and required a week of packing and loading and two large trucks to move. The relocation of a Rolls-Royce car from Kent to Monaco became less straightforward when it was revealed that the car was not only bullet-proof but bombproof too. It travelled directly to Monaco in an Abels truck
escorted by the owner’s security detail. But what about the Concorde engines? “After the aircraft was taken out of service, Concorde parts were sold at auction and we shipped them to collections around the world,” John tells the Journal, “including the engines, which took pride of place in a display in Houston, Texas.” “Whatever you own,” John concludes, “from a grand piano to a precious family heirloom, you can rest assured that Abels will move it safely and securely around the corner or across the world.” Call Abels on 0800 626 769, email: johnwatson@abels.co.uk or visit abels.co.uk

PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT Important plans affecting your area
Moving on up Kate Kuomi, the former owner of Britannia Row Studios on Wandsworth Bridge Road, has converted the twostorey warehouse into two spacious industrial-style flats. The former studio manager of Pink Floyd, Kate has owned the property since 1995 when she bought it from the band and turned the old office building into a sound recording studio. In the 18 years that she independently ran the Britannia Row Studios, she worked with a whole host of musicians from Kylie to Westlife. Before the conversion, the original studio featured live rooms, vocal booths, drum rooms and production suites, but now, having drawn up the designs herself, Kate created a bespoke concrete staircase to separate the building into two stylish flats. Kate and her husband Jamie Lane, a former session drummer and now musician, had to strip out the 1ft thick sound proofed interior walls and although the project only took nine months, they came up against a few problems along
28
the way. Being so close to the river, the Environment Agency advised that the concrete floors should be raised eight inches to reduce the risk of flooding. In addition, the site used to be home to a laundry which raised questions of toxic chemicals which may have been contained in underground tanks. Although the chemicals never emerged, it added £15,000 to the total cost of the build. Orchestrate Ltd, based in Webb’s Road in Wandsworth, engineered the design and build of the project. Main contractor Ross Malone said: “This building presented a unique and exciting design and construction challenge in that we – together with Kate and Jamie – were
committed to preserving the history of the building and its musical heritage. “We also wanted to stay true to the building’s industrial roots. Rather than trying to hide services of steel works under plasterboard, or losing the original cast concrete ceilings (the building used to service taxis so was built to last), we left them exposed. Nothing needless has been done to the property and the result is an incredible space, fully equipped to face modern life, honest about its structure and true to its heritage.” In 1995, the two-storey warehouse was valued at £200,000. A total of £210,000 was spent converting and furnishing both flats and now the two 900 sq ft properties, are priced at £899,000 and £980,000 respectively. The plan is to rent out the flats until Kate and her husband are ready to move in themselves, at which point they will convert them into a single house for themselves. orchestrateltd.com

In with the new Hammersmith & Fulham Council’s plans to create a state-of-the-art facility for children with disabilities at Queen’s Manor Primary School are taking shape. The £6million development, which will see the school’s current Special Educational Needs (SEN) facility completely rebuilt, has already gone through the public consultation stage. The plans for the school, which is located on Lysia Street, include a total makeover of the grounds and the addition of a sports pitch. It also details the creation of support, training and meeting rooms, space for a variety of activities and after-school clubs, as well as play areas and specialist provision for children under five. The new facility will provide an environment where children with disabilities can play safely and parents can get information and advice. In addition to the new facility, the £6million funding provided by Hammersmith & Fulham Council will help rebuild the school’s own support unit for children with special
educational needs. Headteacher Sonja Harrison said: “This is a project that stands to benefit all of the children at Queen’s Manor, as well as improve provision for children with disabilities in the local area.” If the plans are eventually approved, it is expected that work could be completed by October 2017.

It responds to threats to old buildings, trains building professionals, craftspeople, homeowners and volunteers and gives advice about maintenance and repairs. Since 1877 countless buildings have been saved for future generations.
Information about maintaining your home is available through events, courses, lectures, publications and telephone advice. To support our work why not join the SPAB? Members receive a quarterly magazine, our list of historic properties for sale and access to our regional activities.

Time for a change The Journal catches up with Matthew Hodder-Williams, associate director of Marsh & Parsons’ Bishops Park office to talk about the year just gone and what’s in store for 2017 EMILY ADAMS
I
t’s the morning after that rather momentous election result when I meet Matthew Hodder-Williams in Fulham, and so first things first; I need to hear his thoughts. Will there be any effect on a local scale? “We’ve seen this happen before,” he says honestly. “We have years of experience doing this and have worked through similar markets.” In fact since the Journal met Matthew back in June 2015, he’s seen his fair share of changes. “In 18 months we have seen pretty much the property market equivalent of ‘four seasons in one day’. Nothing has been typical about any part of the market this year,” he tells me. It’s because of that wealth of experience that the Marsh & Parsons Bishops Park office has had a very busy winter so far. “Recently, we’ve seen more demand from international buyers who have traditionally looked at properties in Earl’s Court, Knightsbridge and Kensington and are now considering the Bishops Park area due to the larger houses and overall space,” he explains. They’ve even sold 28 flats in a scheme at Hunt’s Paper Factory over the year, leaving them with just three to sell. Matthew tells me that although there have been a number of changes over

the last year, the fundamentals of the property market are still same. “Making sure that asking prices are appropriate for the current market remains the most important thing, followed closely by providing access. Buyers have more choice than they’ve had for a long time, and if you miss the chance for them to see the property, they’ll quickly move on to something else.” This Christmas, as well as giving their clients the best advice, you’ll find the Bishops Park team at the now sold out Fulham Palace Christmas Carols. Having sponsored them since 2011, this year they’ll be supplying the mulled wine, mince pies, printing the song sheets and banners and also attending on the day to volunteer a helping hand. “My little one came last year and I think the excitement he showed gave me a reminder of what the joy of the Christmas period really means,”
Matthew tells me warmly. “If you add in the historic and iconic surroundings that Fulham Palace provides, those experiences and memories are the ones that will stay with us.” Looking forward to 2017, Matthew is eager to see what it holds. “We have an interesting year ahead of us; the will they, won’t they of Article 50 together with two important European elections in France and Germany will give us plenty to navigate.” As he’s said before though, Matthew isn’t worried about change. “Bishops Park continues to attract those looking for lovely treelined streets, high quality local schools, desirable houses, overall lifestyle and proximity to central London, and I think these will continue to be sought-after.” 333 Fulham Palace Road, SW6 6TE, 020 7993 9888, marshandparsons.co.uk
