Everything’s coming up Mill-house The boutique London Theatre Workshop (LTW) in the heart of Fulham has been open for less than two years, but has firmly cemented its reputation as a cultural hub for the borough, with sell-out plays and musicals appearing frequently at its home on New King’s Road. Artistic director Ray Rackham, fresh from a

trip to New York where he has been discussing the possible transfer of a recent LTW production, tells the Journal about Through the Mill, the story of Judy Garland, written by Ray himself. “I wanted to write a play about a star, but I wanted to write something that was also innately theatrical, and uses the various conventions of theatre to tell a story.

Fit and fabulous

Judy’s life is exactly that; she lived, loved and died almost always in the public eye,” he says. Until 19 December, £15, Tuesday-Saturday evenings 8pm, Saturday and Sunday matinees 5pm, London Theatre Workshop, 65 New King’s Road, SW6 4SG, londontheatreworkshop.co.uk

But, prepared to be more excited, as Paola’s BodyBarre online shop has just been launched, but it’s not all leggings and sports bras; expect to see python pouch bags and cashmere scarfs too, which are stocked at the studio in Fulham as well as on the website.

Forty new electric car-charging bays are anticipated to be in operation across the borough by the end of next year. Planning applications for 10 new on-street charging points (each with two bays) have been submitted to the council by service providers Source London.

Sing for Christmas The Fulham Children’s Choir is holding not one but three carol concerts this month. With two at Fulham Palace (13 and 15 December) and one with the Kensington Singers at St Dionis Church in Parsons Green (14 December), it’s going to be a busy three days for the choir. Directed by Hermione Ruck Keene, the choir is open to both boys and girls between the ages of six and 13, which gives a lovely range of voices to the group. Christmas

Advent Calendar Throughout December

10 December

11 December

Christmas is sorted for the kids this year, courtesy of Fulham Palace. If they want to meet Father Christmas in person, he’ll be there or if they want to see a classic pantomime, the Palace has got it covered. The classic story of Dick Whittington has been adapted for younger visitors with colourful sets and lots of audience participation, while you can let your little ones dance and sing along at the Frozen Party.

All Saints Fulham will be holding a Christmas celebration in aid of the Brain Tumour Research Campaign. Sing along to carols and listen to readings given by a whole range of individuals including Honor Blackman and Christopher Buckmaster. The All Saints Fulham Choir will provide some magical music while you enjoy Prosecco and canapés. The charity raises funds for research at Imperial College’s Charing Cross Hospital.

St John’s Walham Green CE Primary School wants to get the whole community involved in its Christmas fair this year. There’ll be festive food and drink, a hot chocolate bar, mulled wine, some stalls for shopping, as well as some great entertainment such as a bouncy castle, face painting, and many craft activities. What’s most exciting is that this Christmas fair has something extra special to add: real reindeers!

The Journal is here to help you plan the festive season. Take a look at these exciting events happening in your local area this December

12 December

13 December

15 December

The annual North End Road Christmas markets are well under way, with the second day of festivities arriving on 12 December. The road will be completely pedestrianised so you can wander round the stalls. There’ll be the chance to wrap up that Christmas shopping with stalls selling hand-made decorations and crafts. The smell of street food will fill the air while the Fulham Brass Band provides music and carols. There’ll also be a giant Christmas tree, an oversized reindeer and stilt walkers that you won’t want to miss.

On 13 December, residents, (that includes you if you want to get involved) will attempt to carry out the largest door-to-door carolling afternoon ever, to try and raise awareness for loneliness at Christmas time and throughout the year. To break the world record, iMedia, the business organising the event, needs 2,000 people to sing at 10 houses in a minimum of two roads, with a different carol sung at each door. iMedia hopes it will be a fun, happy event that will help bring the community together while creating a lasting legacy.

Every front door needs a wreath at Christmas, but have you ever thought about making your own? If you have, pop along to Normand Park on 9 December where you can do exactly that. A craft workshop will be taking place so you can get all creative and test out your arrangement skills. There will also be carols, face painting and festive performances to sink your teeth into and help you get into the spirit of things. And obviously, Santa will be making an appearance.

All the worldÕs a stage Bethan Rees sits down with Justin and Sarah Savage, a couple who live in Fulham, to talk about their love of the area, theatre and, well, each other

Savage

J

ustin Savage started out in the theatre industry aged 22 as a stage manager in a theatre company, and now takes pride of place as company stage manager for Artful Theatre Productions having just finished producing The Killing of Sister George at the London Theatre Workshop above the Eel Brook pub.“It’s the best job in theatre that people have never heard of,” he laughs. But the madness doesn’t stop for Justin, he’s now managing Goodnight Mister Tom at Duke of York theatre (11 December-20 February 2016). His wife, Sarah, is an actress, producer and director, and had a starring role in the recently finished show The Killing of Sister George. Recently married, the Savages are clearly besotted with each other; the not-so secret glances of adoration as they respectively talk with me, the connection between the two is undeniable. But, how does this fare when they’re working together? “I’m like the cat that’s got the cream,” Sarah grins. “We don’t do tension,” she adds. What does Justin’s role consist of? “I look after the show, the actors and the musicians, but I also represent the producers of the theatre. I do the payroll, the petty cash and check the lights are ok, but also if there’s a knock at the door and someone says ‘Can I talk to you?’ I become the

confidant, the agony uncle,” he tells me. “That support is so important.” Although now residing happily in Fulham, the pair aren’t originally from SW6; Sarah is from Wandsworth Common, and Justin, slightly further afield, from Royal Leamington Spa. They met in the borough, at the Riverside Studios, so this place holds a special place in their hearts. “I love being so close to the river, it’s a real stress buster,” says Justin, and Sarah quickly jumps in: “We have a house in Chichester too and that’s also a real stress buster.” I ask why the duo picked Fulham as the area for their home. “I’ve always loved it,” Sarah starts. “Coming back was the best decision I ever made. King’s Road is your high street and that’s just amazing.” Justin tells me the auditions for The Killing of Sister George were held at the Dance Attic on North End Road, which both of them love. “The building just hums with energy,” says Justin. “It really encapsulates our industry,” Sarah adds. However, there is one thing she believes is missing from the area: an arts centre. “We could really do with one, something like the Battersea Arts Centre, where we could have wonderful yoga and dance classes and a gallery.” The Savages have definitely given me some food for thought, as well as actual food which consists of almond croissants from one of their favourite local spots, Hally’s. artfultheatre.co.uk -8-

Everybody needs good neighbours... Emily Adams finds out about the people giving more than just presents this Christmas

with cake and crosswords, encouraging people to get out of the house, take part in the local community and get them talking about their lives. The charity does exactly what any good neighbour would do and, just like every good neighbour, it wouldn’t dream of charging for its services. Volunteers run errands and escort people to appointments; they help with gardening and basic DIY problems and they offer their friendship and companionship whenever it’s needed. For the team of volunteers, who come from all walks of life, it is not about the everyday tasks that need to be done, it’s about the interaction they can provide for their clients. Just a friendly conversation and a bit of communication can change someone’s day. At Christmas, the charity ramps up the support by offering a few more services than normal, whether it’s helping out with some seasonal shopping or giving people the chance to get involved in the festive spirit. Steffani and her team of volunteers “hope to provide further shopping services as well as our befriending service to try and prevent the isolation that the festive season can bring for some”. This year, as always, Fulham Good Neighbours will selflessly give more than any present we could offer, making sure no one is forgotten over the Christmas period. After all, good neighbours can become good friends.

D

ad is refusing to join in with the party games, granny has had one too many sherries and the annual game of charades is getting out of hand. By the end of the Christmas period, you either love your family or loathe them. But sadly for some people, there is no family to squabble with over the festive season. For some, Christmas is the loneliest time of the year. Thankfully, in Fulham, there are a few people on hand to provide some much needed support and company. Fulham Good Neighbours has been dutifully serving the community for almost 50 years, helping the elderly, disabled and more vulnerable members in our area to live independently. Director Steffani McDonagh, who has been running the show for the last 18 months, says: “Christmas time is especially hard for the elderly and vulnerable as they can be forgotten in the excitement and festivities.” Having worked with different charities for the last 10 years, Steffani finds it “incredibly rewarding and challenging” and has many plans for the future, such as expanding its services outside of Fulham. The charity relies on the support of around 100 volunteers to help people overcome isolation and loneliness. Since launching, it has set up a social club where elderly members of the community can meet and enjoy lunch, along with tea, coffee and cakes baked by the local W.I. There’s also a regular Reach Out Club every Wednesday

Business

Bethan Rees speaks to some of the shortlisted nominees and lucky winners of awards at this year’s Hammersmith & Fulham Brilliant Business Awards

O

n 19 November, hundreds of local residents and business owners gathered at the Hammersmith Town Hall to celebrate the Brilliant Business Awards. The glittering ceremony heralds the flourishing local businesses in the borough, with many of the winners based in our beloved Fulham, including Imagineear, Vagabond Wines, Ma Baker and Green Structural Engineering. Read more about some of the shortlisted nominees and winners below:

for the recognition it would mean for our clients and our team, who work so hard to go the extra mile and to over-deliver for our clients. We celebrated, took photos, and tweeted to all and sundry. But when we won the Best Technology Business award, we all just looked at each other, flabbergasted. We had only entered these two categories, and we did not see other businesses winning multiple awards, so we felt unbelievably privileged. You could say it was a pretty good night at the office! imagineear.com

WINNER BEST CREATIVE BUSINESS AND BEST TECHNOLOGY BUSINESS Imagineear, provider of multimedia content and technology solutions Andrew Nugee, chief executive What are Imagineear’s plans for 2016? In 2016 we are looking to build on our progress and success in content and technical delivery worldwide. We are designing another, even better, iteration of our flagship 5” touchscreen android device, and we will build on our network of agents internationally. Then it’s just a question of designing beautiful, multilingual content, and getting it into people’s hands.

What does Green Structural Engineering do? Green Structural Engineering is a Fulham-based practice with a reputation for service, intelligent design and innovative, applied solutions. The practice has grown rapidly since its inception in 2008 and specialises in commercial, residential and temporary works design. GSE has developed successful relationships with many of London’s foremost architects and developers. We ensure our homes and structures are safe but also functional. Why do you think the awards are good for the local area? I think the awards are a great thing for Fulham because it showcases all the different businesses that thrive in the area. It is always a worry that large companies will take over all the spaces and make an area look generic. The awards allow individual businesses to celebrate their diversity and encourage locals to take a fresh look at shops and businesses that they might perhaps overlook or take for granted.

Fulham Opera, independent opera company Ben Woodward, musical director Tell me a little bit about Fulham Opera. It was started in 2011 when a singer suggested we perform Das Rheingold, which we did but as it is the first in a series of operas, we decided we had to do the others as well. The idea is that all of them are performed in one week and in our little St John’s Church in Fulham – we did it!

How did it feel to be shortlisted for an award in the Best Creative Business category? I’m very pleased; it’s always great to get some kind of notoriety from the borough. The council has been a huge support, awarding us the grant for small businesses two years in a row. Councillor Ben Coleman has also been a huge help with his efforts to improve the arts in the area.

Do you think Fulham is a creative area? I think Fulham is a very creative area: there are so many individual businesses that celebrate creativity, from the Pottery Café that encourages children to unleash their imagination to Chairs and Coffee near Fulham Broadway, who roast their own beans in a giant silver roaster at the back of the café and sponsor local artists by displaying their work on the walls. Siggi (on Fulham High Street)makes the most beautiful hats and the Gasworks, just off New King’s Road houses lots of small businesses making all sorts of things from bespoke carpets to hand-screened fabrics.

Warr’s Harley Davidson, an official Harley Davidson dealer John Warr, managing director How does it feel to be nominated for the Best Customer Service award? It’s great to know our customers appreciate how we do things here. Do you like being based in Fulham? I love it here. Ditch the baubles this year and opt for some slightly more unusual tree decorations. Oliver Bonas has got it covered with a wide range of fun and interesting hanging trinkets. There’s a globe in an array of colours, some geometric shapes, a fox, a snowflake with a small photo frame and a pink pom-pom-nosed reindeer.

Door to door

Be sure to give your house a festive finishing touch with one of these wreaths from Becky Blooms Flowers. Whether you want a traditional red and white display with the odd sparkly bauble, or a fruitier version with orange slices and pine cones thrown in, there’s a large selection for you to choose from.

FOOD & DRINK Warning: the following may make you hungry and thirsty

The sound of music Enough talk of turkey for now, what we actually want is some sushi, and Koji has got it under control. A new DJ and sushi event has just launched for the first Thursday of every month, which will see DJ Claire Moss setting the pace from 9pm while guests can sample some new winter cocktails. These special drinks include a Japanese Whiskey Sour with Nikka All Malt and an Ossabone Bullshot that is made with bone broth produced by a local resident. 58 New King’s Road, SW6 4LS, 020 7731 2520, koji.restaurant

Sugar and spice Christmas just isn’t Christmas without a little gingerbread house sitting in the window, waiting to be devoured once you’ve worked your way through the Quality Street. But if you’re not bothered by the chaos of creating your own and having to deal with the aftermath of icing everywhere, Bayley & Sage can sort it out. Whether you want a little bungalow or a giant mansion of gingerbread, there’s an option for you. Gingerbread House, 600g for £14.50 or 3.5kg for £75, Bayley & Sage, 34 New King’s Road, SW6 4ST, 020 7736 2826, bayley-sage.co.uk

Shaking things up If you want to try an unusual take on a Christmas menu, head to Bistrò by Shot. It plans to draw you in with cheese gougères and Prosecco and then treat you to a sumptuous three-course meal. Start with a choice of artichokes and truffle cream, salmon cucumber with dill and vodka jelly or a guinea fowl terrine with pistachio and kumquat. The main course is a difficult decision between duck pie, monkfish tail, beef wellington or mushroom ravioli. If only it was acceptable to eat numerous Christmas dinners. 28 Parsons Green Lane, SW6 4HS, 020 7371 7533, bistrobyshot.com - 22 -

TOP TURKEY TIPS John Fynan cooks a roast to rule the roost at Christmas In many households at Christmas, it is not excited children who are the earliest risers but the cook, wearily squeezing the turkey into the oven, well before Father Christmas has snaffled his mince pies. Why does the Christmas cook insist on dawn rising? Urban myths and frozen turkeys have a lot to answer for. A 5kg fresh turkey (perfect for a family of 12 and still leaving plenty for cold cuts) will take just over three hours to cook. However, be sure to leave at least half an hour for the turkey to rest before carving – covered with foil, the meat relaxes, is easier to carve and continues to cook even out of the oven. There are many differing opinions and recipes on how to cook the perfect turkey – here at Parson’s Nose we prefer to keep it simple with garlic, thyme and smoked streaky bacon. I expect the typical family, after a cooked breakfast, is not going to eat lunch until 2pm. Here is the plan:

Winter wonderland Forget the standard turkey with traditional trimmings – have something new and exciting at The Imperial. This year, they’re offering roast turkey interesting extras like butternut purée, crispy pancetta, mulled cherries and Christmas pudding parfait with a brandy sauce. And that’s not even the half of it – the garden is being transformed into a Winter Wonderland Grotto. Imagine nursing a glass of warm mulled wine, a wood-burning chiminea smoking away in front of you, while you sit back on comfy sofas – Christmas has never been so cosy. 577 King’s Road, SW6 2EH, 020 7736 6081, the-imperial.co.uk

10.30am Season the bird all over with a good quality coarse sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, fill the cavity with half a head of garlic and a handful of fresh thyme. Slather a generous amount of butter on the breast and cover with several rashers of Parson’s Nose smoked streaky bacon. Placing the bird on a trivet allows the heat to move, helping the turkey to cook evenly. If you don’t own one, arrange a few carrots in the base of your tin and sit the bird on top. Place in a hot oven (225°C/200°C fan) for 30 minutes. 11am Baste the turkey with cooking juices and cover with foil. Turn the oven down to 200°C (180°C fan) and cook for two and a half hours, basting and rotating every half hour. 1.30pm Take the turkey out and leave to rest in a warm place, covered with foil for half an hour. 2pm Carve the turkey and serve. Stuffing the cavity of the turkey will affect the cooking time so add an extra 30 minutes if you are roasting a stuffed bird. Have a very Merry Christmas from the team at Parson’s Nose! n 753 Fulham Road, SW6 5UU, 020 7736 4492, parsonsnose.co.uk

Love at first bite Bethan Rees gets her teeth stuck into steak as Orange Elephant opens on Fulham Road, offering guests to dine without a menu

T

here are few things in life finer than the sight of a steak arriving at a table. It’s the anticipation of cutting into its centre with a glistening, razor-sharp knife, through its charred, grillemarked exterior to reveal its (hopefully) perfectly dark-pink middle, which makes it (in my opinion) the most exciting food to order. Orange Elephant does its best not to disappoint a ravenous diner, and exceeds by miles. Named after the breed of South Devonshire cows with distinctive elephant-like appearances due to their wide faces, big ears and rust-coloured coats, the meat served here comes from these gracious animals and is aged for a minimum of 32 days. However, when visiting this brand-new destination, don’t expect to be handed a menu brimming with different cuts, starters and sides, or even a menu at all. Here, it’s a set menu of a seasonal salad to start, followed by a signature 12oz sirloin steak, beef-dripping chips and a house sauce, or a gargantuan Tomahawk steak to share between four. I appreciate Orange Elephant’s

straightforward, no-fuss approach, and I’m interested in seeing how this will be executed. Jamie Champion, general manager of the restaurant, who formerly held this post at Beagle, greets me and my guests enthusiastically, seats us, and explains the intriguing no-menu concept. “All you have to choose is how you want your steak cooked,” he tells us. As meat-lovers, we all chose either rare or medium-rare – Jamie recommends medium-rare so that the marbled fat melts a little more. The meat is cooked in a Big Green Egg, a ceramic barbecue that uses a clever charcoal fuel capable of generating an intense controlled heat, allowing the steak to be roasted, smoked and seared all at the same time. The meat arrives with uniform cross-hatch marks and crisp, charred edges, and as I take my first bite I proclaim: “Oh my goodness.” Heavenly in all its juicy glory with the flawless hue of pink meets purple, it’s up there with some of the best steaks I’ve ever had. I’m more of a rib-eye girl myself, but I’d happily make a sirloin-shaped - 25 -

exception this time. Paired with a stunning Argentinian Malbec with hints of tobacco and notes of black cherry, I’m in paradise. The steak is served with the aforementioned house sauce – green in appearance with a taste of a hybrid salsa verde and chimichurri. However, like Colonel Sanders’ secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices, the head chef, Jai Parkinson, won’t let me in on his magic formula. And although on first glance I would imagine this is a no-go zone for vegetarians, after trying the gourmet truffle mac ‘n’ cheese, I’d be tempted to convert. Guests looking for a quick lunch or a long boozy dinner with friends and family should head to Orange Elephant. Its unpretentious interior with soft lighting, wood floors and pewter table tops make for a perfect backdrop to the meal, as it doesn’t draw your attention away from what’s on the plate, but complements the warm and welcoming atmosphere. 351 Fulham Road, SW10 9TW, 020 7352 7999, oesteak.com

Let it blow

Bethan Rees visits Blink & Blow on Farm Lane and leaves feeling like royalty

G

etting your hair blowdried is one of life’s self-indulgent luxuries that we don’t always have time for. Having your hair trimmed after a few months might be a necessity for some, She but simply going to a course, salon to have your hair washed and dried by a professional appears to be a little more decadent. But, as I soon learn when visiting Blink & Blow, just off Fulham Broadway, there’s so much more to it than that. I always remember sitting on the floor of my mother’s bedroom, watching her hair being blowdried by her best friend (who is a hairdresser) while they gossiped and laughed for an hour or so. Afterwards with her glossy hair she smiled from ear-to-ear. It wasn’t just a blow-dry, it’s closer to therapy, through laughter and pampering. I enter the newly launched salon and I’m greeted, well more grunted, by two gorgeous pugs, Minnie and Max, who belong to the owner. Minnie’s a little bit grumpy, I’m told, as she hasn’t had her

morning croissant yet. I don’t blame her, I would be too. The salon feels calm and I’m not being rushed to the basin chair to have my hair washed – I take a leisurely 10 minutes to

Crossrail

2 for SW6?

Chelsea and Fulham MP Greg Hands is asking local residents for their thoughts on a possible change of route for the proposed Crossrail 2, which would mean bringing the line to Fulham Broadway and Imperial Wharf. The route set out in the proposal is currently under consultation, but it includes a station on the site of Chelsea Fire Station on King’s Road before heading to Clapham Junction. However, this proposal has been met with some serious opposition from residents who have subsequently launched a campaign entitled No Crossrail 2 in Chelsea. Greg Hands has also said that he received a feasibility report from the Mayor of London and his team for the two potential Fulham sites and quite a few practical barriers were identified, including an increase in the tunnelling needed and the funds required for this. The MP said he was very grateful to the Mayor and his team, though he didn’t agree with all the findings. “I myself feel that an interchange at Fulham Broadway would lighten the burden associated with football matches at an expanded Stamford Bridge stadium – I do recognise that the report identified a number of substantial difficulties in these two options,” he says. He wants to hear residents opinions on a Crossrail 2 station coming to Chelsea and Fulham, asking: “Would residents prefer a station at Crossrail 2’s new preferred site on the King’s Road, at Imperial Wharf or Fulham Broadway? Or not at all?” To request a copy of the Mayor’s feasibility study, or to give your opinion, please contact Greg Hands’ office at handsg@parliament.uk or 020 7219 8828

Your dedicated Strutt & Parker estate agent will know what you mean by a ‘big garden’. Knowing the little ones’ playground is a must-have is just one advantage of having your own dedicated agent. That means when you buy or sell your home with us, the person you see at the first meeting will see you all the way through to completion. So if you’d like a more personal and professional service, we’d love to chat.

We highly value your feedback: fulham@residentsjournal.co.uk or 020 7987 4320
