Dear Resident, February brings with it a hamper full of love, pancakes and London Fashion Week. With this in mind, The Journal takes you on a whirlwind tour of the local fashion institutions such as Natasha Coote and March, from page six, and speaks with British fashion designer Amanda Wakeley about her brand’s bridal destination on Fulham Road and life on the river (p.8). Meanwhile, the Small Paintings Group is holding its annual exhibition at the Piers Feetham Gallery in Fulham and Bethan Rees catches up with a few of its select members to find out more (p.12). We send Emily Adams off to hit the slopes in the most unlikely of places, SW6, as she attempts to refine her skiing skills (p.22). Elsewhere, The Journal remembers one of Hollywood’s favourite blondes, Marilyn Monroe, at the latest exhibition at the Little Black Gallery (p.4). We hope you enjoy the issue.

BLONDE BOMBSHELL
The latest exhibition to grace the walls of the local Little Black Gallery is entitled Gentlemen Prefer Blondes starring Marilyn Monroe, and features two photographers’ portraits of the legendary Hollywood beauty: Milton H. Greene and Douglas Kirkland. Milton H. Greene (1922-1985) was one of the most celebrated photographers in the world, and by the end of their four-year working relationship, Greene had photographed the blonde bombshell in 52 different settings, producing more than 5,000 images – some of which have never been published. In contrast, Douglas Kirkland’s relationship with Marilyn was more ‘up-close-andpersonal’. In 1961, the star invited the then 27-year-old photographer to come to bed with her. The result? His famous photograph series, An Evening With Marilyn Monroe, sensual, intimate and spontaneous images taken by a man who was, at that time, a mere rookie. • What do you enjoy most about being based in the local area? I love my neighbourhood; everything is on my doorstep. Restaurants, bars, shops, and most importantly, my yoga club. • What is your favourite trend this year? The ’70s look. This is my favourite era and I am glad that so many designers have created such gorgeous collections inspired by these times. • Are there any trends you dislike? Not at all. I love all trends, I believe in letting people get creative in any kind of way. • What inspired your latest collection? One of my favourite artists, Jimi Hendrix. I decided on Jimi because his music simply inspires me and his wardrobe was also very colourful. Athena Procopiou is available to buy at matchesfashion.com / athenaprocopiou.com

LOCAL FASHION WEEK As London greets the hoards of fashionistas this month for London Fashion Week (19-23 February), The Journal speaks to the some of the local movers and shakers of the wardrobe world BETHAN REES
Natasha Coote owner of Natasha Coote
• Would you describe Fulham as a creative area? Definitely. There are a lot of small creative businesses, which make the area unique. It translates in how people think and what they wear, which is very interesting. • What are doing during London Fashion Week? I am planning to see a few shows, which is always very exciting. Even just being around to absorb the atmosphere and see the latest street styles is already a show in itself. I hope to come out with a lot more new ideas for our customers. • How closely do you pay attention to fashion and trends in your shop? Fashion is what we do, focusing on everyday modern contemporary style, but it has to be the individual fashion that is worn with great confidence and finished with personalised touches, that’s what we aim for. We provide the tools and expertise to make it happen. Natasha Coote, 173 New King’s Road, SW6 4SW, 020 7371 7526, natashacoote.com

Founding director of March
• Do you think the people in Fulham are fashion conscious? I think they are fashion conscious, but not slaves to the trend. That’s what I try and do. People like to know what’s in fashion so what I try and do is give a nod to the trend. There are some items each season that are really on trend but are really unwearable; it’s got to be functional and flattering. • What are the biggest trends for SS16? Summer brights are really strong, such as coral, and there are lots of frills and ruffles, which everybody can do a variation of. Khaki and yellow is a big trend, although it’s quite hard to wear. March will mirror the yellow trend by having yellow somewhere in the garment but maybe not as a block colour, or use it in accessories instead. The bohemian look is coming back as it does every year and there’s always monochrome. • How do you pick the designers you stock? I try to create that combination of up-and-coming designers that you can’t get anywhere else, and also established designers like Charlotte Simone. Each season I introduce a couple of new brands. For example, there’s a really nice brand called Masscob and it does really nice quality fabrics, giving a nod to the bohemian trend, but in a more sophisticated way. • What are your favourite trends for 2016? My favourite trend for 2016 is the revival of classic elegance. The new collections offer sumptuous fabrics such as lace, silk and brocade, classically cut and finely tailored, but with a modern twist. • Talk me through the latest collections that you have selected? My latest selection of brands for SS16 are very varied. The La Fabrique Rome collection offers some amazing Ikat and other Central Asian prints, along with spring coats, summer jackets, dresses and handbags all in cotton. I also have a beautifully tailored collection from Donna Effe Milano, inspired by the screen goddesses of the ’50s. The house of Daniel & Mayer in Milan offers an extensive collection in earthy and sober colours for the stylish and elegant woman, who believes less is more. [INTERVIEW]
RUNAWAY BRIDE
Things are very much afoot at Amanda Wakeley. Having successfully overcome several hurdles since starting her business in 1990, last year marked the designer’s 25th anniversary in the fashion industry. She discusses with The Journal her day-to-day life, the brand’s bridal residence on the Fulham Road and her home by the river
T
he wonderful thing about my job is that it is so varied. One day I could be working on the bridal collection, the next morning on ready-to-wear and then in the afternoon on the jewellery collections that we design under licence. There are so many different aspects of the business. One of the most significant things we did last year was to turn the Fulham Road boutique into our main bridal and occasion wear destination
the couples whose weddings in order to get a real feel for are abroad tend to have a it and then we say to her, personal connection to ‘Close your eyes, imagine the place. I don’t know yourself on your why, but we do a lot wedding day and ask of Greek weddings yourself: how do I feel? and I think that’s Do I feel right? Do I because there are a want to dance until lot of Grecian design dawn in this dress?’ elements within our A wedding collection Amanda Wakeley collections. One of the is very different from a most popular styles recently ready-to-wear collection has been the Cleopatra dress. It’s because each dress stands up a beautiful, romantic gown with metal in its own right. Unlike ready-to-wear beading across the bodice, which is then where you will have a common thread suspended in rows across a completely that pulls the whole collection very bare back and finished with a very full, tightly together, it would be very floaty skirt. Around the world, this has boring if you were to do this in a bridal been phenomenally successful. range. Then again, I think you always I think it’s very important to match need to put some fashion into bridal a bride with her chosen location, the wear and there will always be those overall feel of her wedding and her brides who wish to be very on trend body shape. We encourage our clients with their choice of outfit. This bride to try on as many dresses as they want may often go more in the direction of
and to open Draycott Avenue as our first lifestyle shop. This is where we house what we like to call our ‘luxury essentials’. Essentially, the clothes that you want to live in all day, every day; whether it’s a leather jogging pant, a cashmere sweater or a chunky knit. The Fulham Road boutique is a beautiful bridal location. We’ve got several competitors based in the area, from Phillipa Lepley to Sassi Holford. Here, we carry a selection of evening and occasion wear dresses so we not only cover what the bride wears, but also what guests would wear to a wedding. People who come to Wakeley for an evening dress would also come to Wakeley for a wedding dress. They’re the same people. I’m always very inspired by wedding dresses that can be worn abroad. We shoot the dresses on location to set them within a particular context, as was the case with the latest Rio collection. All

ready-to-wear instead of buying an actual wedding dress. Quite often we find that someone who is brave when it comes to her day-to-day fashion sense will choose a dress that is not necessarily super on trend, but just because it is so beautiful and perfect on her. The one piece of advice I would give any bride is to remember that your wedding pictures last you a lifetime and so as much as you may be a super cool fashion girl, you want to be able to look at your photos in 10 years’ time and think: ‘That was cool, but still beautiful and timeless.’ For me, it’s all about saying to a bride: ‘Don’t let your husband-to-be turn around as you walk down the aisle and not really recognise the woman who is walking towards him.’ Stay true to you. And if he loves your hair down, don’t put it up in a super tight chignon on the day. We have evolved the brand over the past couple of years to be a full lifestyle offering and this is something that has been really embraced by our customers. The whole casual luxe part of the collection, from the cashmeres, leathers and sheepskins, to the very popular handbag collection – it gives us much more potential to expand the retail side of the business. The industry has changed hugely since I first started. The assistance of the British Fashion Council to young designers starting out – as well as the
likes of Caroline Rush and Natalie Massenet who have worked so hard to make London Fashion Week one of the four main global catwalk fashion shows – has been instrumental. Along with this, we in the industry must now share the daily advantages and challenges of the internet. In terms of my home life, my partner [Hugh Morrison] and I love being by the river. It feels very calm and you have this fantastic urban landscape around you, with views of Battersea Power Station, as well the Shard and the London Eye. Everything that is just so quintessentially London. We love going to Lucio on the Fulham Road because we have been dining there since it opened and Lucio always asks us whether we are bringing our black Labrador Lola. Not only is the food fantastic, but dogs are welcome too. I tend to focus on the future and what will be. Along the way you learn lessons the hard way, but I’m not one to live with regrets. Buying my business back with Hugh in 2009 was both the biggest challenge and the biggest highlight of my career. It’s a great feeling to have reached 25 years in the business. I couldn’t have done it without a wonderful team around me – they are as impassioned by the product as I am. I’m a very lucky girl indeed. ARIA IN YOUR AREA
image © FULHAM PALACE TRUST
This month, Fulham Palace welcomes a group of young singers from the National Opera Studio to its Tudor Great Hall. The Journal meets two of the ensemble ahead of the show: Céline Forrest, soprano, and William Wallace, tenor aria from Mozart’s Entführung aus dem Serail; and A Wandering Minstrel, I from Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta, The Mikado. Céline: We will be performing some wonderful music at the palace, including some of my favourite composers such as Puccini and Mozart. We will also be singing some ensemble pieces, which I’m sure the audience will enjoy. I’m particularly looking forward to singing an aria from one of my favourite operas – La Bohème. Fulham Palace; right: Céline Forrest; below: William Wallace (© Robert Workman)
Why do you like being part of the National Opera Studio?
William Wallace: The supportive staff, and the friends I’ve made among my fellow singers and pianists. The warm atmosphere of the National Opera Studio is a perfect learning environment. Céline Forrest: My favourite thing about being in the National Opera Studio is the set of coaches and experts with whom we get to meet and work. It really makes a huge difference being taught by the best in the business. It gives us all an insight into the world of opera and the opportunity to really develop as an artist and individual.
What’s the toughest part of being an opera singer?
William: It requires a resilient character to deal with the nine out of 10 rejections you receive from the many applications
and auditions. Céline: The competition. There are so many wonderful singers out there, and we’re all so different. It’s easy to get bogged down with whom you’re constantly up against.
What are you most excited for at Opera at the Palace?
William: Singing the duet, Un Dì Felice, a piece that I have always wanted to sing from the opera La Traviata. I love singing duets, and this is absolutely one of the best. Céline: I’m most excited about performing in the Tudor Great Hall. I’ve looked at pictures and it looks fantastic.
What else will you both be performing at fulham Palace?
William: I will be singing two duets and two arias including the duet A Highly Respectable Wife from Lehár’s The Merry Widow; Ich Baue Ganz, an
do you think that Fulham Palace a good space to host an opera?
William: It is an incredible place to host a concert, and is perfect for some historical, atmospheric music. Céline: I imagine it’s a lovely venue to host an opera. It has beautiful surroundings, which would make it an ideal day out if you were a guest.
have you got any tips for aspiring opera singers?
William: Find a singing teacher who you like and trust, and who has had success helping other students. Top-end singing teachers are generally very expensive but absolutely essential until you have found your feet. Céline: My advice would be to surround yourself with supportive coaches and teachers that you can trust for as long as possible. I’m slowly learning that training in opera never finishes – make the most of your days as a student. nationaloperastudio.org.uk / fulhampalace.org

he Small Paintings Group was founded in 1991 by Peter Peterson RBA, Sandra Pepys LPS, Cinzia Bonada RBA and Dennis Gilbert NEAC in recognition that small paintings have a special place of their own within the art world. The collective currently consists of 35 eclectic and distinguished artists, which is its membership limit. The first inaugural exhibition was held at The Duncan Miller Gallery in Hampstead in its founding year and it has since exhibited all over London and the southern counties of England. The group exhibits annually at Piers Feetham Gallery in Fulham and this year’s show is running until 25 February, presenting a wonderful array of small scale works by the society of artists working in different styles and mediums. ANNE WRIGHT Anne Wright is a figurative painter of portraits, landscapes and still life, using mainly oil and is also the president of the Small Paintings Group. She has been a member of the collective since 1994, after she was invited to a meeting at Dennis Gilbert’s studio when he was the treasurer. “The group is so friendly and talented, and it’s a privilege to be a member; there are many painters applying to join, but the policy is that we can’t have any more than 35 members,” Anne explains. annewrightart.co.uk Il Matto by Linda Sutton
LINDA SUTTON “My favourite thing about the group is meeting the lovely members who are so enthusiastic about our showing together,” says Linda Sutton. She’s the council of the group and joined around 20 years ago, and she enjoys the restriction of the size of the paintings (12x12 inches) and the limit of 35 members. At Piers Feetham Linda will be exhibiting four paintings, all based on operas; Puccini’s Tosca; Purcell’s The Fairy Queen; Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro; and Bernstein’s Candide. “Opera is a passion of mine and I have been working on around 80 paintings over the last three years,” she tells me. lindasutton.com

The city speaks to me on so many levels,” he says. I ask him what his favourite element is about being part of the Small Paintings Group. “I enjoy the camaraderie and the support we give each other; we’re a very close group of friends,” he replies.

REVIEW: MAMMA MIA Bethan Rees heads to family run Italian restaurant Primavera to get a taste of the Mediterranean The word ‘authenticity’ is one of life’s mysteries to me. Reading restaurant reviews and cookbooks, I see this word being flung around like a rag doll; but what does it really mean and can we ever really describe something as authentic? Or is anything ever unauthentic? With this in mind, I visit New King’s Road’s Primavera, a family-run Italian restaurant. Sipping on a glass of Prosecco (when in Rome) in the dim yet romantically lit room, the space feels welcoming and just the right level of busy for a Thursday evening in a neighbourhood restaurant. Nibbling on some olives, my guest and I choose from the perfectly simple menu, which boasts of pasta, pizza and grills, as you would expect from an Italian restaurant. My measure for any good Italian eatery is its bruschetta, and with my judging hat on, I bite into the impeccably crunchy bread and the juicy tomatoes scattered with red onions and a drizzle of basil and pesto sauce; my purrs of pleasure do the assessing for me. I pair this with the pan-fried tiger prawns in garlic butter and parsley, which come served on toasted ciabatta bread and the shelly friends don’t disappoint either. A hard act to follow, I order scallops and crayfish pasta with garlic, olive oil and parsley, which is

– one of my biggest pet peeves is a light sprinkling of the goodies. My guest goes for the swordfish grill with a mixed leaf salad, asparagus, French beans, cherry tomatoes, baby potatoes and caper relish, which is glossy and he tells me, “looks as good as it makes me feel”, and I think that’s a very good thing. Regardless of its definition, I think Primavera is as close to ‘authentic’ Italian food as it comes and I’ll be returning in a hurry. [RESTAURANT REVIEW]
RUN RABBIT RUN The Journal explores the vast menu at Rabbit in mad, but appealing surroundings on the King’s Road Tom Hagues
“W
hat on earth is this place?” I think to myself as I sit down. There’s a loud countryside theme screaming at me with wooden seating that looks like it’s been hammered together from pieces of farmyard fencing and various hunting paraphernalia adorns the walls. There’s a net on a stick hanging off a road sign that I’m not sure what it could possibly be used for – at first I think rock-pooling, but then that wouldn’t make sense. Perhaps it’s for catching pheasants out of the air with one comical swipe? I’m distracted, as you can probably tell. To
top it off, there’s American country music playing (and also an Elvis track later in the afternoon) so I’m bemused, amused and frankly, loving it. This restaurant isn’t ashamed to do whatever the hell it likes. Turning to the food is a less stressful operation and I’m pleased to see that it’s littered with small dishes that allow for multi-plate ordering. In fact, the first section of the menu is devoted entirely to mouthful-sized tasters, of which I try a mushroom and marmite éclair (two
of my favourite flavours in one of my favourite pastries; it doesn’t disappoint), as well as a brown crab bomb. These bites wolfed down, the next thing to tackle is the braised venison blade. It comes with troccoli pasta and sourdough crumb and is moreish, velvety and suited to this bizarre farmyard restaurant I find myself sitting in – happily so, I might add. The pan-fried goat’s cheese with hazelnuts, honey and thyme is the dark horse in this race and places itself firmly in the lead as soon as I place the first morsel of it on my tongue. The paprika cuttlefish, with its plate-peers of black bean, ink crackers, fennel, almonds and sweet chilli, is the star of the show for me. After eyeing the crispy black cracker (it looks suspiciously like something that’s been scraped off the grill pan of a barbecue), I crunch down and am won over. It’s an exciting, varied, surprising dish that has me smiling back at the stuffed pheasant that’s been looking down on me for the entire meal. “You’re next,” I think. The restaurant might be a bit unsettling for those with a less open mind, and it is wobbling on the precipice of being gimmicky (think a countryside version of a themed rib shack) but the food, the atmosphere and Rabbit’s own-brand wine (exceptional) make the barmy barn a very exciting place for lunch, or a Sunday roast, which they have also just launched. lgae, to me, isn’t synonymous with beauty and relaxation. In fact, the green, slimy substance reminds me of a semi-traumatic childhood experience involving me falling into a pond in my cousin’s garden; so for me to voluntarily have my body covered in the goo isn’t an everyday occurrence. However, this isn’t just any old algae sourced from a suburban garden; this gel is made by Biologique Recherche, a celebrated French skincare brand. At Beauty.m, part of Seed Salon on Fulham Road, customers can encounter body treatments using the Parisian products, including the newly launched Detoxifying and Toning Algae Treatment. While perched on the treatment table, my therapist talks me through the process and asks if I have any concerns with my body. I give the usual spiel about my stiff shoulders and that everywhere could be a little firmer. I lie
18
Feeling as soft as silk, I’m massaged with Huile Dermotonique down on the table, covered in towels for decency, and the therapist begins the gentle exfoliation all over, using Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 Corps and a massage glove to remove any dead skin and prepares my body for the next treatment stages. Feeling as soft as silk, I’m massaged with Huile Dermotonique, which aims to tone the body all over, and is especially good for slack skin caused by rapid weight loss. On my stomach, she uses Complexe Anti-A, a highly concentrated botanical solution rich in ivy and meadowsweet extracts, which are said to help to dissolve unwanted fat cells, and Complexe Anti-C on my thighs to assist in combatting cellulite. Up next is the algae stage. The skincare treatment was conceived to
give the skin the means to regenerate itself, while detoxifying and oxygenating at the same time. The gel is not nearly as cold, slimy or smelly as I thought it would be; truthfully, it glided on like any other body gel and had the aroma of thyme, lemon and peppermint. Wrapped in cling film, feeling a little bit like a baguette in a picnic hamper, the therapist covers me in a heated blanket, which intends to release the marine active ingredients that remineralise, tone and purify the body. It feels slightly like sitting in a sauna with a sleeping bag on – bizarre to say the least. The therapist takes my mind off the peculiar experience by massaging my shoulders, face and head, and soon again I’m as relaxed as I was before. After showering, Emulsion Originelle Régénérante Corps is applied with a massage glove over my body, which provides skin elasticity and softness and Crème Anti-C on my thighs to improve firmness. Getting dressed after the 90-minute treatment, my clothes slide on to me and my skin feels as if it’s returned to its baby-like state, as smooth as Tropicana. I always say I’ll try anything once, and this treatment, I’d definitely try again. Detoxifying and Toning Algae Treatment, £80 for 90 minutes, 789 Fulham Road, SW6 5HD, 020 7731 5744, beautym.com

people embarked on overzealous New Year’s fitness resolutions and many of these injuries may have been preventable. Being enthusiastic and motivated is fantastic, but it is important to realise that if you are training for the first time or returning to training after a period away that you do so gradually. The most common injuries are back and neck pain, or knee and shoulder injuries – often the result of poor conditioning and technique. Improve spine and joint flexibility: Keeping the joints around the spine and ribcage strong makes it easier for your muscles to hold you in a good position. Gentle rotation stretches are like little injections of lubricant into your joints, so try the open book stretch and gentle lumbar rotations. [HEALTH & FITNESS REVIEW]
Getting to know the slopes The Journal sends its most uncoordinated writer to the mountains of Fulham to learn how to ski EMILY ADAMS
T
he human body is not built for skiing – or at least my body isn’t. Seeing me on skis will only conjure images of Bambi on ice. My legs move in opposite directions, I forget which way is up and my body will not cooperate with my brain. So, when I am sent to try out Chel-Ski, London’s new and biggest indoor ski centre, I’m a little bit hesitant. Chel-Ski isn’t easy to find; it’s hidden between warehouses and offices behind the King’s Road, so I’m not quite sure what to expect when I finally stumble upon it. Inside, there’s no snow and oddly, no typical dry slope. Instead, I am faced with two astro turf-covered mats sitting opposite each other at a slight incline. Two dance studio-style mirrors separate the mats, so you can see everything you’re doing wrong (or, hopefully by the end of the lesson, right). With my skis correctly fitted, I stand facing the mirror, and hold the safety bar in front of me while my instructor talks me through what’s about to happen. It turns out that these white slopes revolve beneath your feet like an
“My instructor is extremely patient and talks me through ways to get my balance” oversized, ominous treadmill, to give the effect of skiing down a mountain. It requires a little imagination, and it’s an odd sensation seeing the ground move beneath you. My instructor holds a remote control that decides my fate and with the touch of a button, she can change the speed and angle of the slope. Of course, every time she speeds the mat up and I let go of the bar, I panic and fall with astounding awkwardness, but my instructor is extremely patient and talks me through ways to get my
22
balance, how to hold myself and reminds me to always watch myself in the mirror. The one-on-one nature of the lesson means I improve quickly and I’m given an assortment of props to help me work on different areas of my technique. The hour is split into 10-minute segments, with frequent breaks because it’s surprisingly hard work. Chel-ski is perfect for beginners and those who want to refine their existing skills, whether it’s on skis or on a snowboard, and I’m amazed that by the end of the hour I’ve actually mastered the basic technique – to be honest, I think I’m built for skiing after all. Sessions start from £39.95 for adults and £34.95 for children, 4 Sotheron Place, Michael Road, SW6 2EJ, 020 3829 6961, chel-ski.uk

Toy
story The Journal meets the co-founders of the Toy Box Club, an innovative solution to putting a stop to toy-strewn houses and encouraging children to share BETHAN REES
I
n the information age where parents and children can be found glued to smartphones and tablets everywhere you look, it’s important to remember that toys are still a crucial building block of life. Whether it’s a set of Lego or a toy car, these childhood items are still very much imperative and prominent in 2016. You only have to look at the sales figures over Christmas from stores such as Toys R Us and online bestsellers from websites such as Amazon to notice their prevalence. However, with Christmas, birthdays and day-to-day treats, comes the hordes of packaging, the huge expense and living room filled with so many objects you can hardly remember what colour the carpet is. Enter Sheela Berry and Jessica Green, aka the co-founders of Toy Box Club. The two parents met while at school aged 16 and when I ask them if they felt it was risky going into business with a good friend, Jessica replies: “We figured if we can survive this long being friends then we can probably work together.” The idea and concept behind the business is simple, as Sheela, a Fulham resident and also director of music PR company AirMTM, explains to me. “Toys are expensive and children’s attention spans to toys are limited; they
24
could want the toy of their dreams, you buy it and a week later they don’t want to play with it anymore,” she begins. They are offering a monthly subscription service that delivers a box of the best toys and books straight to your door and at the end of each month, the box is collected and another set is delivered, which attempts to encourage children to share their toys. “In this day and age we’re so accepting of sharing economy, such as Zip Cars, borrowing dresses and jewellery and even borrowing someone’s house All images by Elena Litsova Photography
[lifestyle] through Airbnb, why not do this with toys?” Sheela continues. Jessica, who used to work for TV companies as a script editor and lives in Hammersmith, explains to me more about the business. “There’s that guilt of wanting to give your children a toy, but not knowing what to get them for their age group. We’ve done the research and have put our findings into creating a box of toys for every month of your child’s life between the ages of zero and four years old,” Jessica says. “For someone who’s busy and doesn’t have the time to research, you don’t have to worry about that anymore.” One of the things I find personally most fascinating about the concept is the intentional choice of using genderneutral toys. An ever-increasingly controversial and spoken about topic, one of the campaigns leading the way on discussing these issues is Let Toys Be Toys, a parent-led campaign that grew out of a thread on parenting site Mumsnet. Let Toys Be Toys is asking the toy and publishing industries to stop restricting children’s interests by assigning and promoting toys to specific genders, with some toys and books only for boys, and others only for girls. The main arguments surrounding the campaign are as follows: Children should be able to decide which toys they want to play with and what they think is fun; they also need a wide range of play to develop different skills and avoid out-of-date gender stereotypes. Jessica explains to me how she feels about this issue, and why Toy Box Club has followed suit. “I feel girls’ toys are particularly focused toward appearances and domestic tasks; it’s really quite amazing if you have a look at the toys on offer, such as ironing boards,” she tells me. Sheela elaborates: “We want to teach parents that there is nothing wrong with girls playing with dinosaurs and boys pushing prams; in fact, pushing a pram when learning to walk is probably one of the best things you can do for development.” Adhering to lazy gender stereotypes could be damaging for a child’s future including carrying on these passé typecasts for males and females. Let Toys Be Toys states that child psychologists have shown the toys children play with help them develop certain skills and reinforce interests,
which could influence their future choices, such as boys leaning towards careers where spatial skills are used and girls towards domestic tasks and physical appearances. The toys selected were picked after Sheela and Jessica sent out questionnaires to all their friends with children to ask what toys have been most useful to them and which brands they considered the best. “Almost all the answers were the same: big, established European brands,” Jessica says. As a result of their findings, you’ll find the boxes filled with toys from brands such as Ambi Toys, VTech, Brio and LeapFrog. Working with established companies helps to ensure that all the products are of a high quality and
“These childhood items are still very much imperative and prominent in 2016” are safe, all complying with the 2009 European Toy Safety Directive. Some parents may be sceptical about sharing toys due to the hygiene aspect. However, all the toys are passed through a cleaning process using Ecover products, which are all non-toxic. I ask the pair if they wish Toy Box Club had been around when they both had their first children, and they both laugh and exclaim: “Yes!” Jessica adds: “The real value of it is that you get rid of them at the end of the month. When we had small babies our houses were full of rubbish – I wish this existed before.” toyboxclub.co.uk

Eight months of disruption is set to hit residents and businesses in Fulham this month, as the National Grid’s work to replace 1,800 miles of gas pipes across London begins. This is part of a £1 billion project to exchange pipes which are no longer fit for purpose. The first phase of the work starts with a westbound closure to traffic on King’s Road until September, but there are road diversions in place throughout to minimise disruption. The first phase, which will run until late April, will be between Gunter Grove and Edith Grove, followed by Stanley Bridge to Gunter Grove from May until September. An extra diversion route will also be in place during Chelsea FC’s home games. Cllr Wesley Harcourt, the cabinet member for Transport, Environment and Residents’ Services for Hammersmith & Fulham Council, said of the plans: “These works are going to cause some localised disruption for residents. We have raised concerns with National Grid and in response they have set out to minimise the disruption as far as possible. We will monitor the works closely and do everything we can to represent resident complaints to National Grid if they arise.” nationalgrid.com / lbhf.gov.uk

“This prime section of the north bank is in high demand among the city’s discerning buyers” to reflect the grand façades of west London’s Edwardian and Victorian mansion buildings, with precisely detailed brickwork, decorative stone and dark ironwork that harks back to centuries gone by. With accommodation spread across six floors, the development offers luxury one and two highlyappointed bedroom apartments starting from 540 sq ft in size. Each home opens
onto its own private balcony or terrace and boasts a superb specification and exceptional quality of finish. The homes are set around a central courtyard with green landscaping and a tranquil infinity pond, providing a calming space for relaxation. A concierge service and dedicated underground parking add to the appeal of this elegant building, which lies adjacent to Hurlingham Park, the prestigious Hurlingham Club and just a short stroll from the New King’s Road. A number of excellent schools in the catchment area offer a wide range of highly-prized education options, with a choice of both private and state schools, including the bilingual Ecole Marie d’Orliac (linked to the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle), Thomas’s Fulham, Hurlingham Academy, Lady Margaret School and The London Oratory School. [PROPERTY WATCH]
Get your ducks in a row The Journal sits down with Ben Gee, sales manager and director of the Marsh & Parsons’ Fulham branch to talk stamp duty changes and what prospective buyers should be doing right now BETHAN REES
S
at in the bright and airy office on Moore Park Road, Ben Gee, sales manager and director of the Marsh & Parsons’ Fulham branch, enthusiastically tells me the advice he wants to give to sellers. “Instruct a lawyer early,” he begins, “and get your sales pack ready because it’ll speed up the process. What you don’t want is a buyer getting to the point of exchange and if it goes over the deadline, has a little wobble on the price.” The deadline he is referring to is, of course, the changes to stamp duty tax. From April 2016, buyers of buy-to-let properties and second homes in England and Wales will have to pay an additional three per cent on each stamp duty band, which Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne announced in the 2015 Autumn Statement. It’s easy to understand why Ben wants to share his advice. “Whether the buyer is a buy-to-let investment purchaser or it’s a second home for their children or themselves, nobody wants to be stung with the extra stamp duty,” he says. Clearly, with this sense of urgency, Ben explains they expect to see an increase in transactions in the first quarter of the year and this is already evident. “At the start of 2016, just a week or so into the working year, we had lots viewings and agreed numerous sales,” he tells me. “This includes three mews houses where there was a little bit of interest before Christmas, but now all of them have had great offers and the sales are progressing.” However, I wonder if this spike in
Waterford Road, £2,700,000
transactions pre-April will falsify the growth of the market? “I don’t think it’ll give an unrealistic view of market growth, but what it will do is create momentum. I think this year, what we’re going to see is not capital growth but a healthier turnover of property, which is good for buyers and sellers,” he answers. “There’s always something that kick-starts the property market and whether that’s interest rates going up or down or changes in the tax system, there’s a catalyst that makes this happen.” I ask Ben what will happen for the rest of the year, following the changes to stamp duty. “Already we’ve seen a significant rise in buyer/ seller confidence and this, I hope, will continue further into the year.” Any final words of advice from Ben
for property buyers this year? “You need to present yourself as a really good option as I expect there to be heightened competition between buyers. Be certain you’re absolutely ready to go and get your ducks in a row.” Marsh & Parsons Fulham, 103-105 Moore Park Road, SW6 2DA, 020 7736 9822, marshandparsons.co.uk The Gallery, £535,000
