Dear Resident, Resolutions are not the only thing new for 2016; we’ve refreshed the design of The Journal to make it look super sleek, just like the residents of Fulham – we hope you like it as much as we do. Alongside the Christmas tree accepting its unfortunate fate and preparing packed lunches again, January is full of exciting news and transitions. Bethan Rees talks with Wedding Presents Direct founder James Dundas on selecting the perfect gift, as the company moves into the area ( from page eight). As Blue Monday (18 January) approaches, we bring you some solutions to keep you smiling throughout the month, from page six. But it’s not all doom and gloom, join The Journal as they begrudgingly sample some local breakfast spots in celebration of National Breakfast Week (p.18). We hope you enjoy the fresh new issue and good luck with your New Year’s resolutions, and as Theodore Roosevelt once mused: “Believe you can, and you’re half way there.”

Blue Monday Busters The Journal gives some tips on how to beat Blue Monday in the local area
B
lue Monday is the name given to the third Monday of January, which was calculated using a specific formula by a tutor at the Centre for Lifelong Learning at
Cardiff University, Cliff Arnall. With factors such as the excitement of the New Year fading coupled with levels of debt, bad weather and summer feeling like a million months away, it’s easy to
see why it’s been dubbed this name. This year, Blue Monday falls on 18 January, and whether you believe this theory or not, here are some ways to help keep you smiling through the month.
Stretch out with yoga The benefits of yoga go beyond being able to touch your toes. Not only just physically advantageous, this ancient exercise can also do wonders for the mind. It can help you achieve inner peace and tranquillity, or simply give your mind a nice quiet rest. Fortunately, there is a profusion of studios in Fulham where you can practise yoga, and there’s not just one type either. There’s Ashtanga and candlelight yoga at Slice Studios, Bikram yoga at The Hot Spot or Power of Yin yoga at the Power Yoga Company, to name but a few. slicestudios.co.uk / thehotspotyoga.co.uk / thepoweryogaco.com
Do something for someone else Taking some time out of your own hectic life to lend someone a helping hand can often take your mind off negative things and invoke a positive feeling of goodness in oneself. In Fulham, there are plenty of organisations that welcome assistance with open arms. For example, Fulham Good Neighbours offers a range of services to older, disabled or vulnerable people living in the local area, whether it’s simply giving companionship or help with basic gardening. And if you have an interest in gardens, history, architecture or education, Fulham Palace offers a huge range of projects for you to get involved in; play your part as a photographer or a museum steward, a storyteller or garden tour guide. fulhamgoodneighbours.org / fulhampalace.org
Go for a walk Fulham is so lucky to be blessed with an abundance of green spaces, and there are few things in life that blow the cobwebs away quite like taking a walk on a crisp January day; it’s guaranteed to raise your spirits. Go with a friend, a dog, a pair of headphones, a good book or on your own and relish how inspiring nature can be. From Bishop’s Park to Eel Brook Common, Hurlingham Park to South Park, each space offers something a little different. lbhf.gov.uk

[LIFESTYLE]
Get pampered at a hair salon There’s something so therapeutic about visiting a salon. Is it the head massage you receive while having your hair washed, the gossiping with the stylist or flicking through page after page of magazines? I’m unsure, but I am certain that whenever I leave the salon with a new do, I feel instantly better. Treat yourself to a haircut or style at Hari’s Hairdressers, where it has a dedicated feather, braid, ponytail and bun bar, if you want to change your look without doing anything too drastic. 183 New King’s Road, SW6 4SQ, 020 7731 6062, harissalon.com
Melt away your stresses with a spa treatment What better way to sink into relaxation than with a massage. Whether it’s an Indian head massage or a full body treatment, it’s a surefire way to send you into the land of tranquillity. The Journal loves the offerings at Gina Conway, such as the Chakra massage and the Fusion massage. However, if a massage isn’t for you, Fulham still has plenty more to offer. Why not try a Biologique Recherche face treatment at Beauty M, part of Seed Salon on Fulham Road? The Soin Lissant facial is a reconditioning treatment, which aims to smooth and calm skin. ginaconwaysalons.co.uk / beautym.co.uk
Do something creative Blue Monday is a great opportunity to bring out your inner artist, as research shows creativity can help boost positive emotions. Delve into the world of pottery painting at Emma Bridgewater’s Pottery Café on Fulham Road for a fun and inventive way to pass the time. Also offering tea and coffee and a range of homemade cakes and cookies, it’s the perfect way to spend the day, plus you’ll have something to take away from your visit to either display in your home or to give as a special gift. 735 Fulham Road, SW6 5UL, 020 7736 2157, pottery-cafe.com

[Q&A]
Just
married The Journal gets into joyful spirits as Wedding Presents Direct moves to the area. Founder James Dundas talks to us about the exciting transition
What inspired you to start Wedding Presents Direct? Melanie and I started the business soon after we got married, having seen the lack of variety and choice first-hand. Department stores offered a limited range and what there was available, was pretty bland and uninspiring to us. Wedding lists were an afterthought and it showed in the customer service and range of products. Putting together a wedding list should be fun and inspiring – and the after service care should make life easier during a hectic time in your life.
Why did you move the business to Fulham? We’ve been looking for the right property for a few years and Fulham has always been our first choice. We have been in The Old Imperial Laundry in Battersea since 1996 but like so many commercial buildings in west London, it is being converted to residential flats. We are thrilled to have found the right space.
How would you describe the new space? The showroom is based over two floors. It has an open-plan, slightly industrial look that immediately feels relaxed and welcoming. We have split the showroom into areas that represent the various rooms in a house so that couples can see their choice of presents in situ.
8
We have a bedroom area, a beautiful kitchen designed and installed by Sola Kitchens of Fulham, a sitting room, a dining room and much more.
Do you feel that you fit in with the rest of the businesses in the area? Wedding Presents Direct is all about setting up a couple in their new house and we feel that Lots Road is a home and interior destination that complements what we do perfectly. Couples can be inspired by the other shops around us before they come in for their appointment and decide on their wedding list.
How do you keep the future grooms entertained? Having been a groom myself I totally sympathise with the men who arrive in our showroom with a bit of a glum look; a possible two hours of shopping ahead of them. We pride ourselves on making the process as enjoyable as possible for men, as well as women. Some choose to watch sport on one of our iPads, others settle down in a comfortable chair with the papers. We even have a bar in the new showroom where grooms can sit and help themselves to a drink while their fiancée makes the decisions. But we do find the majority of grooms get into the process at some stage, be it

[FEATURE] choosing exactly the right wine glasses, the perfect set of kitchen knives or that all-important set of saucepans.
What’s usually the process that a future bride and groom will go through when choosing presents? They usually come into our showroom for at least one meeting to see one of our consultants and to look around our extensive range of samples. We pinpoint the suppliers they are particularly drawn to, and then they often go home and continue to add to their list online while liaising with their consultant via email and phone. We usually work in sections to ensure nothing is missed out: china, glassware, cutlery, kitchenware, bedroom accessories and gifts.
Have you got any advice for the selection process? Discussing whether you want formal or informal china, glassware and cutlery or both before your meetings definitely saves time. Whether you need items to be dishwasher safe and if you prefer patterned or neutral are also very useful conversations to have. But above all – enjoy it!
Are there any staples that never go out of style for wedding gifts? A silver photo fame or a beautiful set of champagne flutes are always going to be lovely wedding presents to give and receive!
Do you have a favourite type of gift THAT you like to give people? I always try to buy something off their wedding list, naturally. But from their list I would look to give them something that I know they will love and treasure in years to come. Many years ago I used to work in the wine trade and so I have always loved elegant wine glasses. I also have a soft spot for beautiful bed linen – there is nothing quite like the feeling of getting into a freshly made bed of super soft Egyptian cotton. For something a bit more challenging and thought-provoking, take a trip back to 1966, when, according to a then 13-year-old Jon Savage, pop music changed forever. Looking at The Beatles, The Who and The Kinks among many others, this book explores the highs and lows of the pop-culture revolution. 1966 follows Savage’s well-known book on punk culture, England’s Dreaming.
This book follows the terrifying true story of Salvador Alvarenga when his two-day fishing trip didn’t quite go to plan. A vicious storm ruined the engine of his boat and the current dragged him out to sea. Fourteen months later he finally reached solid ground, more than 9,000 miles from where he started. Through a series of more than 40 interviews, journalist Jonathan Frankin unearthed this bizarre story.
Ladybird is here to rescue you from the nightly bedtime-story routine with its audiobook collection of classics. Accompanied by fun and vibrant music, there are eight hours of sensitively told children’s stories including Treasure Island, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Black Beauty, Oliver Twist, The Jungle Book, A Christmas Carol, The Wind in the Willows and many other magical tales.

Haute Déco
Specialising in handmade, custom doorknobs and handles, Haute Déco has a unique collection of couture home additions to make any house individual with its understated yet luxurious glamour. Marie-Véronique Swannell, founder of Haute Déco: “Moving away from somewhat cliché interiors, there is room for personality, perhaps even a little fantasy. Nature features prominently, with foliage motifs and natural textures. Rugged textures such as bark are paired with precious finishes for a new take on rough-luxury. Precious, in fact, is the new byword, with gold rediscovered in contemporary finishes such as satin gold that are at the opposite end of the spectrum to ‘bling’. The new Precious is understated, as much about revealing and appreciating craftsmanship as it is about glamour. Gold is teamed with intense, sophisticated colours that set it off, such as burnt orange, ruby or a deep shade of turquoise blue with green undertones. Layering details such as Haute Déco’s jewel-inspired cabinet knobs is a key component of Precious, complementing the textures.” 556 King’s Road, SW6 2DZ, 020 7736 7171, The Journal asks local interior experts for their hautedeco.com

David Collins Studio is a team of leading architects and designers with a reputation for luxurious interior design, and it was headed up by David Collins himself until his sad passing in 2013. The design studio is behind some of the world’s most glamorous restaurants, bars and boutiques including the Artesian bar and The Wolseley restaurant. Simon Rawlings, creative director of David Collins Studio: “At David Collins Studio we tend to steer away from trends, working in a different way by building up narratives within our designs in order to create something that is truly timeless. That said, there are obvious trends from season to season in design. For 2016, those that I think will be apparent are: sophisticated colour clashing – blocks of strong, but muted colours used to excess; the use of ceramic instead of marble – there are so many fabulous ceramics for wall and floors; coloured stained woods; leaded glass and patchworked fabrics.” The Studio, 74 Farm Lane, SW6 1QA, 020 7835 5000, davidcollins.com

Maurizio Pellizzoni
Interior architect Maurizio Pellizzoni founded his eponymous company in 2007 and is based in the Chelsea Design Quarter. Maurizio Pellizzoni, founder and creative director of Maurizio Pellizzoni: “For the past few years, interiors have been very pared back and understated due to austerity with the state of the economy. Most people were creating organic-themed interiors and trying to re-use materials and upcycling became a popular trend. For 2016, we will start to see a more luxurious feel returning into interiors. This trend is being successfully integrated with the use of opulent materials such as marble and metal. In particular, shiny golds are definitely coming back into interiors to give a more glamorous look. For colours I can see strong block shapes and shades of red and blue re-emerging, which hark back to the Memphis movement that dominated the scene in the ’80s with its post-modernist style. It’ll enable us to be more playful with our interior decoration schemes with graphic prints and clashing tones.” 75-81 Burnaby Street, Fairbank Studios, Studio 8, SW10 0NS, 020 7352 3887, mauriziopellizzoni.co.uk

SHOT ESPRESSO WORDS: BETHAN REES
From the team behind Fulham favourites Ice & Slice and Bistrò by Shot, Shot Espresso is tucked away in Jerdan Place, which, even on a weekday morning feels like a lazy Sunday in Venice, thanks to the whispers of Italian accents and the tables on patios full of caffeinelovers. This isn’t just a one-hit wonder for coffee though, even though its flat white is close to perfection using Allpress espresso; it’s also a deli and apéritif bar. From the busy commuter en route to Fulham Broadway station in need of a pick-me-up, to old friends taking precious time to chat and share pastries, even in its small space Shot Espresso is all-encompassing. I tuck into a bowl of creamy scrambled eggs, salty, streaky bacon, just-ripe avocado and lightly toasted sourdough, and I’m set for a busy day. This small but perfectly formed destination is a jack of all trades and, as it turns out, master of a few too. 11 Jerdan Place, SW6 1BE, 020 7381 5572, shotespresso.com

MANUKA KITCHEN WORDS: BETHAN REES
By now, I’m sure everyone is clear on what manuka honey is, but just in case there’s someone who’s been living under a rock or isn’t anywhere near Holland & Barrett; manuka honey is produced by bees in Australia and New Zealand that pollinate the native manuka tree and it has earned a reputation as a miracle worker for all types of ailments and is applauded for its alleged medicinal effects. Of course there are a couple of mentions of the sticky stuff here but in true English fashion, I opt to order the Full Fulham, its take on a Full English, which is, well, just like a Full English but served in Fulham. Perfectly poached eggs sit on top of sourdough toast accompanied by cylindrical black pudding, a sausage, super-smoky bacon, mushrooms and a tomato – and I ask for a side of half an avocado to give myself some peace of mind that I’m adding to my five-a-day. An ideal place for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and if you’re visiting in the evening, be sure to take a wander downstairs to 510 Below where gin is the name of the game. 510 Fulham Road, SW6 5NJ, 020 7736 7588, manukakitchen.com

BOMA
WORDS: EMILY ADAMS If everywhere served up a Full English like Boma does, I would only eat breakfast food for the rest of my life. Crispy bacon rashers, Cumberland sausages, scrambled egg, chunky wholemeal bread, mushrooms, tomatoes and a fluffy hash brown, alongside a little bowl of baked beans, and we have perfection on a plate. It’s all washed down with a glass of
freshly squeezed orange juice and some bubbly Bucks Fizz. Folksy acoustic music plays in the background of this relaxed and cosy restaurant. It’s not fussy or trying too hard, it’s laid-back, great at what it does and presented by the most accommodating staff I’ve come across. 116 Wandsworth Bridge Road, SW6 2TF, 0207 736 5114, bomas.co.uk
HALLY’S WORDS: TOM HAGUES
You walk into Hally’s on New King’s Road and the next thing you know you’re in a Californian beach café enjoying all that the sunny state’s culture has to offer. You can’t go wrong with anything you choose – it’s all freshly made and looks gorgeous (it’s one of those places where even the cakes look like they might be good for you) so it’s best to forget all inhibitions and dig in. Our visit sees us order, rather happily, an enormous English breakfast: plump sausages, a Portobello mushroom and diced avocado, as well as pancakes with maple syrup, caramel bananas and, because it would be rude not to have it alongside, snappable crispy bacon. SKELETON in the window The Journal meets local resident and founder of Fulham Osteopathic Care, Isabel Diaz and talks about the inspiration behind her clinic and how it benefits the community BETHAN REES
O
steopathy is a manual therapy that focuses on diagnosis, treatment and prevention of health problems in the muscles and joints of the body, and Isabel Diaz, founder of Fulham Osteopathic Care, discovered how valuable this type of treatment can be. As a former Latin dancer, osteopathy supported her through various injuries, enabling her to continue performing and it was these experiences that inspired her to learn more.
22
Now a qualified osteopath and midwife, Isabel combines both of these expertises in her Fulham clinic, which treats adults, mums-to-be, children and babies. For the last 10 years Isabel has been working from her home in Fulham and opened the clinic on Fulham Road in July last year. “I enjoyed working from home but eventually my practice outgrew my front room. I wanted to incorporate additional philosophies for medium-term and long-term maintenance of my patients health
such as yoga, Pilates, rehabilitation and Alexander Technique, and simply needed more space and more people to work with,” Isabel explains. “Now we have three treatment rooms and a Japanese inspired studio, the clinic is beautiful and has exceeded my expectations.” Yoga and Pilates are often heralded for their health benefits, but Isabel tells me it also aids in maintaining the beneficial effect of osteopathy. “Osteopathy is excellent in the short-term and mediumterm to get patients pain-free and to
[PROMOTION] get areas of the body functioning better, but to maintain this in the longer-term I would suggest yoga or Pilates classes,” she says. “However, some patients would come back injured or worse; not because yoga and Pilates wasn’t good for them, but because they hadn’t been supported in the right way or they had done the wrong exercise for them and their condition,” she continues. And it was this experience that determined just what Fulham Osteopathic Care would become. “I realised I needed to create a place where I could have osteopaths, yoga and Pilates teachers working together – a hub of health and wellbeing with a holistic approach in Fulham.” What Fulham Osteopathic Care offers patients is a detailed, personal bespoke service in an all-encompassing space. “The therapists and the instructors all communicate with each other. If I suggest a yoga or Pilates class to my patient, the teacher will be aware of the
“We all love what we do and have a lot of fun doing it” patient’s specific problem and be able to work safely and effectively.” All the classes at the clinic have a maximum size of six people, so the teachers can really help individuals with injuries, and there’s a small retail area so they can prescribe aids to patients after treatments to create a care package including heat and cold therapy, exercise aids, painkillers and supports. “That was the vision I had for my clinic, to have everything under one roof, hand-picked excellent practitioners and instructors who share my philosophy of care. Providing safe treatment, education and empowering patients to look after themselves and make healthy choices. We all love what we do and we have a lot of fun doing it. It’s a really good atmosphere to work in,” says Isabel. An added benefit of opening the new clinic is that she has widened her patient base. “We are looking after people now that I may not have seen working from home including a more elderly population and people who didn’t actually know what osteopathy was or
how it could help them. We are educating people about what we do and that is really positive,” she describes. “We have visibility now so people can just come in and make enquiries.” Patients are mostly local as she’s always worked within her neighbourhood but the clinic is open late into the evenings and on weekends as well, which draws in a wider crowd. “We get people visiting us from quite far away such as Reading and Guilford,” Isabel says. But of course, being so accessible seven days a week from 7am-9pm means she’s an extraordinarily busy woman, working when many of us are relaxing, but this doesn’t faze her. “I’m used to working unsociable hours as a midwife and a dancer. There’s no distinction in working day and night or weekends. I feel it is important to offer appointments outside of normal working hours so that patients can access the care they need.” Isabel has many long-term patients, which is partially due to the nature of osteopathy, but I like to think it’s also because of the quality of care she applies to her job. “You end up forming a longterm relationship with patients because most people have chronic problems that require management. But, you do also get to know their family and friends too who might come and see you as a result, so you end up knowing clusters of people who know each other which is
really sociable,” she tells me. Isabel’s work as an osteopath and midwife is very much full-time and full-on and I ask her what her favourite part of it is. “I read somewhere that the happiest people are those who find a career that combines their passion with making a contribution. I feel this is true of my work. More and more people are seeking freedom from pain without being dependent on medications and as an osteopath I can help. I see people with varying degrees of pain and disability and I have the opportunity to make a real impact on people’s lives, which is immensely rewarding and I enjoy working with people” she describes. “But it’s more than that; when I look at my list of patients in the morning, it never feels like I am working, it feels like I am going to be having a catch-up with a friend and I really look forward to seeing them.” 959-961 Fulham Road, SW6 5HY, 020 7736 1846, fulhamosteopathiccare.co.uk

Polished to perfection The Journal heads to the VOS Hair & Beauty salon for a much-needed manicure and hand massage eMILY ADAMS

I
wish I could say that my nails are always neatly manicured, that I know how to take good care of them and that I’m no stranger to a nail salon. Sadly, that’s all a lie, and because of it I’m quite hesitant as I push open the door of 311 King’s Road. I’d rather not admit that these are my nails and I start to think I
a sculptor, she inspects each cuticle with such care and precision that I don’t feel the need to engage in that awkward small talk about the weather. It makes the atmosphere a little uncomfortable but I don’t want to distract her, so I relax and take in the room. The salon is simple, nothing unusual
The therapist is gentle and delicate, and it’s touching to see the level of care they provide at a moment’s notice should shuffle out again, but then I’m warmly welcomed and offered chocolates – so obviously I decide to stay. My manicurist puts me at ease straightaway, actually complimenting me on my nails. I’m unsure about where to rest my hands, or how to sit, but she quickly gets to work and my nails are clipped, filed and buffed into shape. Like

and nothing too out there, but there’s a dash of elegant vintage-inspired furniture, a deep buttoned sprung back sofa here and a gilded mirror there. There’s also a line of VOS accessories, which I am told launched in 2016 by Chelsea’s own Oana Babagianu and includes fun and bright statement jewellery with cuffs and necklaces on offer. During my manicure, an elderly man
walks in and asks for some help. He works with horses and needs his nails cleaned up, but he has a broken thumb that he’s worried about. Within seconds of his arrival, the staff have launched into action, taking his coat and talking him through what they can do. The therapist is gentle and delicate, and it’s touching to see the level of care they provide at a moment’s notice. He is amazed at what they do and I can see that clients really trust the people who work here. Meanwhile, I’m being given a soothing hand massage while I deliberate over what colour polish to have. My manicurist recommends Vinylux as it’s long-lasting, eliminates the need for a base coat and dries quicker than most other polishes. I settle on a deep red with a hint of shimmer and, once sprayed to help my nails dry even quicker, she gives me some sweet-smelling cuticle cream to keep my nails in tip-top condition. It may have taken just over an hour of patient hard work, but my nails have never felt stronger, or looked better. VOS Health & Beauty has completely nailed it. Hot under the collar
The BTL Exilis Elite system is an award-winning treatment that tightens and rejuvenates the skin – and luckily for residents, it can be found in Fulham, at Elenique Aesthetics Elizabeth Finney
I
’m welcomed into a pristine white room by Elena GogolenkoCudworth, who is one of just two aestheticians in south west London qualified to use the BTL Exilis Elite. This advanced system is used for non-invasive skin-tightening and minimising lines and
Generally, a minimum of four treatments are recommended wrinkles, and for body contouring and cellulite reduction. As I take my seat, Elena explains the effectiveness of the treatment and how it works. The system can be used on both the face and the body, and introduces radio-frequency waves into the skin in order to heat the collagen. This stimulates growth and the formation of new collagen, something that diminishes significantly with age. It’s completely non-invasive and pain-free, allowing clients to get on with their day. Generally, a minimum of four treatments are recommended with intervals of approximately 10 days. Elena shows me some case studies, and I’m quite amazed at the results. The targeted areas appear smoother, more taut and slimmer. Having asked me to remove all jewellery, Elena places a grounding pad on my right shoulder blade. Making me feel calm and contented, she talks through my medical history and asks which areas I’d like to target. She also explains how the high levels of heat used to attack the fat cells might make my skin look slightly red, and that the system has a
temperature control if I feel uncomfortable. Elena applies a nutrient-rich gel to my skin to help the device move across it smoothly, much like an ultrasound, and then begins. She runs the Exilis in circular movements around my skin, and the heat is actually very pleasant – I’m reminded of sunbathing in a very hot country. I relax, enjoying the massage-like treatment without needing Elena to reduce the temperature at any point. It’s all over before I know it – Elena removes the gel, cleanses my skin and applies a Circadia relief cream, which calms and moisturises, scenting my face with rose. I look in the mirror and, though there’s a touch of redness, there are no obvious marks from the treatment. I leave feeling cool, calm and collected,
excited about my next treatment. Elena has made it clear that while some immediate improvement may be achieved, it will take around eight weeks to see the full results. The revolutionary Exilis Elite system has won multiple awards, is FDA-approved for cellulite reduction and has been used by surgeons in the USA on patients to prepare them for surgery. You really can’t argue with that, can you? Treatment prices on request or at a no obligation consultation. 959-961 Fulham Road (entrance from Burlington Road), SW6 5HY, 020 3637 4549, eleniqueaesthetics.co.uk

And breathe Using supplemental oxygen to encourage the body’s natural oxygenation process might seem a little extreme, when we usually only see this process in terms of negative health and in hospitals. But, with the increasing effects
of pollution and allergies leaving a legacy of short of breath people, this could become more common. Apparently, this can lessen the effects of exhaustion and lack of focus and vitality affected by lack of cellular oxygenation.

Well, well,
wellness
As we welcome in a new year, The Journal investigates some of the weird and wonderful health trends for 2016 Bethan Rees It’s all in the genes Why workout the normal way when you could take personalised fitness training to a whole new level? Thanks to the developing science of DNA testing, the nation can now have an insight into their genetic makeup and correlate this to an appropriate, tailored fitness regime for your body. So, what will your body tell you? Will you be the HIIT intense workout type or the low-impact yoga
kind? One of the companies leading the way with this technology is DNAFit, which requires you to send a saliva swab taken in the comfort of your home (or wherever else) and sent via post to the business, which then analyses the swab and provides you with an in-depth panel of genetic variants associated with your fitness, nutrition and wellbeing in order to help you refine how you work out, eat and live.
Get down to business, sort of Paul Joseph, co-founder of Health and Fitness Travel, experts in tailor-made healthy holidays, stated that four million people recently took a career break due to stress and burn out. With this shocking statistic in mind, more companies are striving to support their employees’ wellness with bleisure trips (a portmanteau of business
26
and leisure). These kinds of trips are fast rising to becoming a common form of travel, with some businesses encouraging workers to make the most of wellness retreats for workplace vigour. A report from Bridgestreet Global Hospitality published by Skift claims that about one in seven companies already have policies covering bleisure or bleisurelike travel.

Read all about it! January is the ideal time to get cosy and curl up with a good book, but which one? The Journal dives into The Marble Collector by Cecelia Ahern emily adams
C
ecelia Ahern is one of those authors that can do no wrong. With 12 books under her belt, she knows how to write a bestseller, but with her ever-growing success, there’s mounting anticipation and expectation. When The Marble Collector arrives on my desk, I can barely concentrate on my work knowing it’s beside me even though I haven’t read the blurb or have the faintest idea what the story is about. I have faith in Ahern. As is the case with all her novels, Ahern’s Irish roots play a key role in setting the scene. She’s not afraid to stick with what she knows because, clearly, it works, but compared to her previous offerings, which are usually contemporary romantic novels, this one surprises me. It’s darker and sadder from the offset, focusing on the challenges of growing up in Ireland, losing loved ones and desperately trying to fit in somewhere you don’t belong. It’s written in a split narrative, alternating between the perspectives of Fergus Boggs (at various ages) and of his daughter Sabrina. As a child, and even as an adult, Fergus is fanatical about marbles, collecting, trading and winning them wherever and whenever he can. They’re the one staple in his tumultuous childhood

with his five brothers. In Sabrina’s story, her father Fergus is suffering from dementia, his memory fading. Sabrina stumbles across his marble collection, but with
no knowledge of why her father has them and with his childhood all but forgotten, she sets out to discover the truth. Essentially, it’s a book about marbles, and clearly that shouldn’t work but somehow, and as usual, Ahern has crafted it into a beautifully-written family saga, intertwined with mysteries and secrecies. As a child and even in his old age, Fergus is a likeable and endearing character no matter what trouble he gets himself into. As his secrets are gradually revealed, we, along with Sabrina, discover so much more about this charming man and his
touching story. As she unearths her father’s past, she begins to fill in gaps in her life that she didn’t even know existed. This book is quirkier and more unusual than Ahern fans will be used to, but because of that, it’s far more intriguing. This novel may have been a risk, but rest assured she definitely hasn’t lost her marbles. I’ve heard a rumour that her next offering, Flawed is out in March. I hate to wish away the days, but is it March yet? The Marble Collector by Cecelia Ahern, £16.99, published by Harper Collins

I still wear it on the ring finger of my right hand, sometimes stacked with one or two costume rings, and I love it. It was a brilliant stand-in on my left ring finger until our actual engagement ring was chosen and ready. Have fun; it’s such a great time in the whole getting married process!

Help – two engagement rings? I’m reaching out here as a confused male (there are lots of us). I am planning on asking my partner to marry me in February. However, we’ve agreed that we will buy the ring together (it will be in Antwerp and handmade). The thing is, I want to surprise her. Should I buy a second engagement ring or a wedding band? It will be approximately eight weeks till we buy the ring together, but in the meantime I want her to have a nice ring on her finger. What should I do?

Mon 26 Oct, 2015 9.25am Your partner sounds very lucky! How about buying an antique engagement ring? I got my eternity ring from Grey’s Antiques just behind Bond Street tube station – it has beautiful jewellery with a little bit of history at prices that wouldn’t cut into the main budget too much.
romantic. If there is already an agreement between you two about choosing an engagement ring together, she may not want to receive another ring before her ‘real’ ring. Also, this may take away from the real ring’s budget. My suggestion would be for you to get her another less expensive piece of jewellery, such as a bracelet which you could have engraved with your names or with words that mean something to the two of you.

or working) what method has worked best for you? Do you do homework right after school (in our case with the nanny), once one of the parents arrive home or in the morning? I would love to hear your thoughts and advice. Fri 6 Nov, 2015 4.22 pm From a working mum’s point of view I would say, if you have a nanny that can do homework with them straight after school, that’s ideal – otherwise mornings and weekends are best. Create a timetable with your child so they know what days they will do homework and what days they can just play. If you involve them, they are more likely to do it without moaning too much. Fri 13 Nov, 2015 5.05pm It’s quite challenging. Our nanny collects our daughter three days a week and does homework with her, but it tends to be reading on those nights, and either my husband or I will read again with our daughter just after supper, around 6.30pm, which has worked so far. She does literacy homework at an after school club, which helps a lot. I’m not a huge fan of homework at this age!

A plan to demolish the Grade II-listed Fulham Town Hall has been stopped by the council. American company Dory Ventures put forward the plans that would have seen the hall converted into a new five-storey building. The proposal also included adding a four-storey extension to the adjoining concert hall, as well as creating space for retail, restaurants and 18 new apartments. It was hoped that the renovation would help Fulham rival the likes of Knightsbridge and Chelsea. However, Hammersmith & Fulham Council have refused the planning application saying, “The development would cause harm to visual FULHAM TOWN HALL amenity; harm to the character, appearance and setting of the listed building and harm to the character and appearance of the Walham Green Conservation Area. The harm caused would not be outweighed by public benefits, which would not result in sustainable development.” The council’s statement was critical about many of the proposed changings to the Town Hall, which was one of a number of public buildings sold by the previous Conservative administration. The council added that the renovation would be “un-neighbourly and overdominant”. The building has remained unused for the past four years. lbhf.gov.uk

Your dedicated Strutt & Parker estate agent will know that after playgroup isn’t the best time to chat. Understanding your schedule is just one advantage of having your own dedicated agent. That means when you buy or sell your home with us, the person you see at the first meeting will see you all the way through to completion. So if you’d like a more personal and professional service, we’d love to chat.
