Dear Resident, Grab your best hat, your box of confetti and keep those tissues nearby because this month, we’re going to the chapel and we’re going to get married – well not literally, but we’re showing you how to make the most of your big day. Are you stuck on what to buy the bride and groom? Fear not, the Journal has put together a wedding gift guide especially for you on page eight. Following this, Bethan Rees meets photographer Francesca Emma to find out how to get the most out of your snaps (p.9) and Dorothy Musariri explores the world of hair and beauty trends for this season (p.12). But it’s not all something borrowed and something blue, the disco bus has arrived in the area as Nile Rodgers brings Fold Festival to Fulham Palace (p.20) and soul queen Candi Staton is performing at Under the Bridge (p.23). We hope you enjoy the issue!

KODAK MOMENT
The Journal catches up with Fulham-based photographer Francesca Emma to find out what it’s like to be a shutterbug on someone’s wedding day BETHAN REES
L
It’s about capturing the emotion of the day For any budding photographers, Francesca also has some guidance. “Really understand your lenses and what they do – get out there and practice,” she tells me. “On a wedding day, don’t just snap away and take loads of random pictures – wait for the right moment. It’s about capturing the emotion of the day and that’s really important. “Something I take as a real compliment is when people will say: ‘we didn’t notice you were there.’ Be aware that people don’t like cameras being shoved in their faces; you’re not going to get the best out of them. Also, make the most out of natural light.”

ooking back at pictures from your wedding day is one of those activities that will forever induce feelings of nostalgia and it’s something you can share with your friends and family forever. This is why it’s so important that you select the right photographer for you and know what you want from them. Francesca Emma who is based in Fulham, tells me she thinks she has the best job in the world. I ask her why: “I’m a people person and I get to travel with my career. I’m always going to really happy occasions and I’m quite a romantic at heart,” she begins. “I think weddings are like fairy tales.” Francesca describes her photography style as “reportage and photo journalism”, so she captures the true essence of an event; the laughter, the tears and the love, sometimes without the subject even noticing her. “One of my favourite moments of a wedding day is when the bride and her party are getting ready, running around, drinking Champagne. It’s the feeling of anticipation I like.” I want to find out if she’s got any advice for couples hiring a photographer for their wedding day. “Definitely meet them far in advance. It’s almost the first thing you need to do when you’re planning,” she says. “I’ve already got bookings for 2017 and I’ve met the couples already.” But, how does she handle camera-shy guests? “It’s all about relaxing people and getting to understand them.” She relays a story to me about a bride being too shy to have any pictures taken initially, but when Francesca turned up to the church, she noticed the wedding party had some dogs. “I said ‘why don’t we just go for a walk with the dogs?’ and I took pictures of the couple running through the grass with the hounds.”

A CUT ABOVE The Journal meets Cutture founders Dominic and Helen Sharland to find out what makes their bespoke wedding stationery so special JENNIFER MASON
suppliers – florists, caterers etc – to make sure all the elements of wedding design come together beautifully.
What else do you offer in terms of wedding stationery?
H: Everything from save-the-date cards and invitations to on-the-day items like menus, table plans, place cards and cake toppers. We’ve even made full installations like paper flower walls.
What does an average bespoke wedding stationery package cost?
H: It’s very difficult to put an average price on it, because each of our projects are bespoke. I would say that, for an average full package, you’re looking at around £3,000. D: That said, we are all about working What makes your BESPOKE with our clients to help them get the wedding stationery absolute best from their budgets. We have stand out? clients telling us that money is no object, Helen: Each project follows a which is always fun because we can couple’s life story. They tell us be really innovative and push the important milestones the boundaries of design in their relationship, with sound, video or scent and we turn that into a technology. Then again, storyboard illustration. we have people coming Dominic: We’re often to us with much smaller the first touch point for budgets and helping people planning their them to get the most from Dominic and Heather weddings, so we often their money is an exciting Sharland work with other wedding challenge in itself.
H: No matter what the budget is, we’ll never scrimp on the quality. So for a smaller budget you might get fewer invitations, or they might be printed rather than laser cut, or even e-vites but they will all be made to our exacting high standards.
What’s the most rewarding part of the job?
H: The reactions we get when we reveal the finished designs is incredibly special. I’ve had emails from brides telling me they’ve cried when they first saw their finished invitations. It’s lovely to produce something that holds such meaning. D: We like the idea that things will be saved after an event, not just thrown away. Intricate or engraved place cards become wedding favours – many frame their invitations as a keepsake. We’ve always thought of our creations as a form of art, so it’s great to see that our clients agree.
Which projects have been your favourite?
H: I like the clever designs, the ones that look a little bit magical. D: It’s the element of surprise, the reveal, that makes them really special. Keep an eye out for Cutture’s retail lines, available online from September. Cutture, Bridge Studios, 318-326 Wandsworth Bridge Road, SW6 2TZ, 020 7751 8395, cutture.com

hat began as an interior and architectural design practise playing around with its laser-cutting machine making cards for friends and family has, over the past decade, morphed into a hugely successful bespoke stationery business, pushing the boundaries of laser-cut design. Founders and company directors Dominic and Helen Sharland are justifiably proud of their business, Cutture. As we sit down for a chat at the company’s Fulham headquarters, surrounded by a selection of impressive past projects, it’s not hard to see why. Although Cutture also has a wealth of corporate clients – and will be branching out into retail later this year – the core of the company’s business is wedding stationery.

FLORA ADORA The floral headwear trend is back in full bloom just in time for the wedding season. Before saying “I do’’, accessorise your locks with lilies and tulips or even roses. Not solely reserved for festivals, this bohemian trend is so versatile that you can keep it nice and subtle with half a halo of daisies, or go big and bold with a floral tiara.
THE LOOK OF LOVE From flowers to highlighters, the Journal brings you its favourite hair and beauty trends for wedding season
SHE’S ALL PLAIT Be part of the braidy bunch crew with Blake Lively, Sienna Miller and Star Wars’ Daisy Ridley, who are taking plaits from the playground to the red carpet. Emulate your favourite stars on your special day with a fishtail ponytail or a front halo braid, both perfect for when tying the knot – it gives a soft, romantic edge to your look. This style works for all hair types, so there’s no excuse now – join the braid brigade.
dorothy musariri ALL WHITE ON THE NIGHT Why not try a white eye shadow to make your eyes stand out on your way down the aisle? It has the effect of exaggerating any complexion to its most complimentary hue. Pair this look with a nude or pastel-coloured lip for a natural, fresh and fashionable look. If you want a little bit of extra drama, finish with a black-winged eyeliner and two coats of mascara.
LADY IN RED Go bold or go home. Red lipstick is the ultimate classic beauty look as it gives that extra pop of colour and draws attention straight to the lips – keep the rest of the face simple. Rocking a red lip with the bride in allwhite makes a dramatic statement, but remember for a long-lasting look, lipliner is key.
12
HIgLIGHT OF THE DAY Listen up, wives-to-be! Highlighting is an easy way to give your face the perfect glow on your big day. Achieve those modelesque cheekbones, emphasise your lip line and make your eyebrows more dramatic by using a creamy highlighter – gently apply it to the top of the area concerned to add instant definition.

HAIRWAY TO HEAVEN
The Journal heads to the newly refurbished Gina Conway salon to put it through its paces EMILY ADAMS to it but it remains classy with large lit mirrors, whitewash walls, dark wooden floors and leather chairs. The salon is filled with natural light and artwork by local artists, and vintage birdcages hang in the window housing the latest Aveda products, but there are two standout features which have transformed this room: the back wall is covered completely in bright green moss and there’s a pendant light feature that runs along the length of the salon – about 100
“H
elp me!” I cry as I all but fall through the door at Gina Conway’s hair salon on Fulham Road. There’s no medical emergency and there’s no fire in sight, but there is a mound of straw on top of my head – I should probably mention that this has been the case for the last few months. For some time now, my hairdo has been a defiant hair-don’t, a walking advertisement for a bad hair day. So when I reach the doors of Gina Conway, I’m a tad eager to get it seen to. Walking into Gina Conway’s salon is a treat for the eyes. The salon has recently undergone a transformation and is now as refined and polished as I hope my barnet will soon look. The new design has a fun and quirky edge
I’m given a head massage that almost sends me to sleep exposed tangled light bulbs hang from the ceiling. Distracted by the new design, I almost miss seeing the hairdresser’s face fall as he sees the mess I’ve made of my hair. I have been cursed with a cowlick, a double crown and a head of thick wavy locks (thank you, mum and dad) and because of that, I have no idea what to do with it. Paul McVeigh, my saviour for the afternoon, is probably the first person to take a real interest in what I do with my hair every day (the answer I’m afraid is nothing). He understands my hair struggles and knows full well that he could create any number of fancy styles, but when it’s left up to me, I won’t be able to recreate it, so together
we decide on something practical. Before this becomes a hair heart to heart, another member of the team arrives with an Aveda comforting tea before giving me a brief stress relieving neck and shoulder massage. Aveda salons are all about the experience, rather than just the haircut, and it certainly relaxes me, although sat in the salon window I feel a little bit exposed. Next my mane is washed thoroughly before I’m given a head massage that almost sends me to sleep, and then Paul re-emerges and gets to work cutting and chatting away, offering me simple tips and tricks about how to care for my hair. He knows instantly what my hair needs and he gives me the holy grail of advice: simply blow-drying my fringe in the opposite direction will soften the pesky cowlick and transforms the way my hair sits, something I’ve continued to do every day since my haircut. Yet more pampering ensues with a hand and arm massage and I’m starting to feel like I’m at a spa and not a hairdressers. A couple of hours later and the final result is unveiled. Before me, I see a well-maintained healthy head of hair, rid of straw-like split ends, trimmed to perfection and styled simply so I can recreate it. Paul has saved my (hair’s) life and I can’t wait to return. £38 to £108 for a cut and blow-dry, 612 Fulham Road, SW6 5RP, 020 7731 7633, ginaconwaysalons.co.uk

QUICK OFF THE MARK
As the Tennis Classic at Hurlingham (21-24 June) returns to Fulham, the Journal catches up with sporting legend Mark Philippoussis who you’ll be able to see in action on the court
Red Photographic on behalf of IMG Tennis

BETHAN REES
The Hurlingham Club
You began playing tennis aged six with your dad – did you enjoy it at that age?
everyone is there to enjoy the tennis and hospitality, there’s a real summer garden party feel about the whole week.
I love this sport and I fell in love with playing tennis as a kid. I was lucky enough to turn this into my career.
What are your predictions for Wimbledon this year?
What’s been your biggest achievement on and off the tennis court?
I would have to say Novak Djokovic is a favourite in the men’s and it’s too hard to look at anyone else but Serena Williams in the women’s.
On the court, my win against the then world number one Pete Sampras in the 1996 Open is definitely up there. Winning the Indian Wells Masters in 1999 along with the two Davis Cup triumphs over France in 1999 and Spain in 2003 were also huge achievements for me. Off the court, it would have to be my family; my son Nicholas and wife Silvana.
What are you most looking forward to at this year’s Tennis Classic event?
It’s such a highlight for me to play at the Hurlingham Tennis Classic; the atmosphere, my tennis partners and the beautiful grounds. It’s a great chance for the players to catch up ahead of Wimbledon.
Who’s the most challenging person you’ve played against? Marcelo Ríos was tough, he has great hands and took the ball so early. Also being a lefty, he had that natural slice out wide that would completely take you off the court to open up the other side.
What would you be doing if you weren’t playing tennis? Something creative, I love all things design.
What’s the crowd atmosphere like?
Have you noticed a change in the new generation of tennis players?
It’s great. It’s an intimate venue and
The game is a lot more
physical now. I’d say the average height of a player is around 6ft 2ins nowadays, but they move around the court like they are 5ft 10ins. Everyone has a bigger serve now, which is heavier from the back.
Do you prefer playing singles or doubles? I really enjoy both, but I love playing doubles as it’s a lot of fun, especially on the ATP Champions Tour where we are looking to have more fun on the court and get the crowd involved.
As tennis players retire REASONABLY early (in respect of other industries), what are your plans for the future? I’m still very active on the ATP Champion Tour and other events during the year, but I started a clothing line, Phlip Apparel, which has been fun and I’m learning a lot about the clothing industry.

With the summer holidays drawing closer, here are some tips for managing back pain while travelling: The seats on an aeroplane can be uncomfortable, especially for those with back pain. Book an aisle seat so that you have more room to stretch out and can get in and out of your seat often without disturbing others. Try to walk around at least once every two hours. Tilt back your seat and place a pillow behind your shoulders and lower back. Inform the airline of your needs, including any equipment you require for your trip and if you need assistance when boarding. Pack as lightly as possible and buy toiletries when you get to your destination. A suitcase with wheels is a good option if you have a bad back. Sitting through a long car journey can exacerbate back pain. Adjust your seat so that you can lean back rather than hunch forward. If your car seat doesn’t provide suitable lumbar support, simply place a rolled-up towel or a travel pillow behind your lower back. Trains provide the advantage of offering space to walk around as well as larger seats. Take advantage of the space and walk around frequently to stretch out. [INTERVIEW]
BODY LANGUAGE
The Journal steps inside the world of A-list personal trainer Erik Meijer to talk body goals and how to get in the best possible shape for a wedding BETHAN REES
“I
started working out in the gym at the age of 17 and I was soon bitten by the bodybuilding bug,” Erik Meijer, personal trainer and one of only a handful of Dorian Yates High Intensity (HIT) Master Trainers worldwide, begins to tell me. “I was lucky to be able to learn from some legends such as Arnold Buurman (Mr Universe) in the Netherlands and six-time Mr Olympia Dorian Yates.” Erik worked his way up to be a professional personal trainer and has been helping people reach their ultimate body goals since 1997. His client base ranges from the person next door to actors (such as EastEnders star Samantha Womack and Harry Potter actor Jon Campling) to professional athletes and of course this means his breadth of work is hugely diverse. “Most clients start out because they want to lose weight or sculpt certain areas of their bodies and when they reach their goals, many start moving the goal posts towards increasing their fitness even further,” he explains. “They start thinking of entering challenges such as marathons and often actors will come to me with a specific goal, such as getting more muscular for a specific film role in only a few months or even the opposite, getting very thin and lean in a healthy way.” He focuses on High Intensity Training having tried a variety of training techniques himself and found that HIT works best for the overwhelming majority of his clients – he thinks it’s the most effective and also time valuable process. “If someone went to the gym five days a week for two hours over 40 years, this would mean they spent approximately two years of their life in
18
the gym,” he begins. “If they had used HIT the results would be even better and the time accumulated would be less than a year.” Being a personal trainer is so much more than telling a client to do 20 squats and a 60 second plank – you travel on a journey of self-improvement with each person. “Seeing the faces of my clients when they are on their way to reach their goals is the best part of my job. Not only are they leaner and healthier but they almost always get a massive boost of confidence and the longer I work with them the more I see them smile,” he says. Getting prepared for a wedding can be unduly stressful, but Erik doesn’t just help a bride or groom look and feel their best physically – he also works with other professionals such as make-up artists, tailors and hairdressers to
help plan their perfect day. Of course, the body is Erik’s area of expertise and the bride and/or groom needs to plan six to 12 months in advance. He’ll conduct an initial physical analysis including a fully body scan using medicallydeveloped DEXA (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry) technology and create a bespoke programme for them. “The bride can even tell me what dress size she wants to be and I can tell her how long this will take within the margin of one week,” Erik elaborates. You could describe Erik as a connoisseur of personal training and with more than 20 years of experience and his distinct lack of ‘commando’ style training, he will help your body goals come true. music and it was the most incredible thing I’d ever seen. We had Mark Ronson, Felix da Housecat and Grace Jones,” Nile says. Fast-forward to 2016 and the music extravaganza has reached the capital, but, he tells me, this isn’t your standard ‘festival’ some may be used to – please refer to the beginning for reference. “At the end of the night, you get to go home and sleep in your own bed,” his infectious laugh strikes again. But it’s also the crowd approach he thinks that sets apart Fold Festival from other events. “It’s the anti-festival mentality – people don’t tend to go by themselves. But with Fold, you can go by yourself and not feel intimidated because the line-up of guests is so inviting and loving,” he muses. “It’s a bit like how you would go to the cinema on your own, you don’t need 15 people to accompany you.” Fulham Palace is steeped in history and is a crucial institution in the SW6 area, so why here? “As soon as I saw it I said ‘oh my god this is the most amazing place I’ve ever seen’. was standing in a field, up to my knees in mud, exhausted, a touch sunburnt, with one broken wellington boot that was refusing to cooperate. Elbow-to-elbow with thousands of revellers, none of the above mattered, because it was my first time experiencing Chic featuring Nile Rodgers at Glastonbury, in 2013. No one cared about what they looked like, who they were standing next to or what each other did for a living – there was a sense of complete harmony, equality and elation among the crowd – grins went from ear-to-ear and nobody was standing still. This is the influence and legacy of Nile Rodgers and his impact on not just the disco music industry, but the business as a whole. If you haven’t heard of Nile Rodgers by name, you definitely

would have heard him by sound. Luckily for Fulhamites, Londoners and people further afield, Nile is bringing his cohorts to Fulham Palace in a project called Fold Festival, which he founded and curates every year since beginning in Montreux, Switzerland, in 2012. “I was playing at the Montreux Jazz Festival and my band and I had played there so many times the CEO of the festival wanted to honour me,” Nile tells me. “I told him, ‘absolutely not! Every time we honour someone, they seem to die’,” he laughs. So, he suggested that the festival honoured the music that brought him to where he is today, “because music never dies,” he wistfully adds. Nile then went on to plan the first event and Fold Festival was born. “I programmed 11 hours of dance
and on the day that I visited it was just a normal day, people were chilling out, there were babies and people sketching,” Nile remembers. “I’m an old hippie, right? And I loved that people were just doing what they wanted to do. That’s the theme of my life, as long as you don’t hurt anyone, do what you want to do.” This year’s line-up includes Chic (obviously), Alison Moyet, Angie Stone and John Newman. “Angie is a great friend of mine, she’s soul personified, and Alison was at the very first Fold event and every time I come to London, I look for a reason to see her – she’s one of the funniest people I’ve ever met,” Nile recalls. As I mentioned earlier, if you haven’t heard Nile by name, your ears will recognise his genius – he’s called The Hitmaker for a reason. With a career spanning four decades, he’s worked with a huge variety of musicians. Beginning as a session guitarist with the Sesame Street band, he went on to play behind

him about the late artist’s influence on himself and his music. “A lot of the talent in my life is currently there because of Prince,” he begins. “A couple of years ago, he told me, ‘you have to hear these girls called King’, and if Prince tells you they’re good, they’re good,” he laughs. “So I got them to come into the studio and we made a record, it was great. They’ll be at Fulham Palace,” he adds. I ask Nile what the best piece of advice he’s ever been given is, and for some reason I’m a little surprised. “Embrace failure,” he starts. “I live by

artists such as Aretha Franklin and Ben E. King and Chic was formed in 1976. Chic’s biggest hits include Le Freak, I Want Your Love and Everybody Dance but because of the successes of Chic’s first singles, Atlantic Records offered Nile and Bernie Edwards (co-founder of the band) an opportunity to work with anyone on its roster. They worked with Sister Sledge and produced hits such as We Are Family and He’s The Greatest Dancer. After this, Nile’s discography went wild. From Diana Ross’s Upside Down to David Bowie’s Let’s Dance and Madonna’s Like a Virgin, he was duly earning his reputation as the Midas of the music industry. His influence is still very much alive after collaborating with Daft Punk on the track Get Lucky and with John Newman and Sigala on the newly released Give Me Your Love, which I’ve penned as one of the biggest songs of the summer. At the time I speak with Nile, it’s been just three weeks since his very good friend Prince passed away. I ask

GOING UNDERGROUND Underneath the home of Chelsea Football Club lies something a little unexpected: a live music venue. In celebration of Under the Bridge’s fifth anniversary, the Journal meets its creative manager, Alan Tenenbaum BETHAN REES
“W
here do I begin,” Alan Tenenbaum, the creative manager of live music venue Under the Bridge, starts as we sit in the very space we’re discussing. Beneath Stamford Bridge football stadium, it’s not really where I would expect to find a venue that has hosted world-class acts over the past five years. From Take That to Jamie Cullum, Alicia Keys to Justin Bieber, a huge variety of artists have graced its stage. For its fifth anniversary celebration, the venue put on five high profile gigs with all proceeds going to the Musicians without Borders charity – these gigs included La Roux, Leon Bridges and Jack Garratt. “The idea for Under the Bridge spawned back in 2007, when I was at the House of Blues in New Orleans, to put together a proper live music venue here. In the early 2000s it was a nightclub called Purple and it had plush purple poles. You wouldn’t recognise it at all in comparison to now,” Alan tells me. “We brought in one of the original concept designers from the House of Blues in America and he wanted to make it feel like you were literally under a bridge,” he

says, and this is echoed in the industrial metal structures which adorn the ceiling, although it’s a lot nicer than any under part of a bridge that I’ve seen – not a troll in sight. The 550-standing capacity venue also hosts private parties and works as a filming space too. “A venue this size really packs a punch in terms of sound and lighting – it’s quite a flexible space,”
It’s not just a square box; it’s got a nice design and décor too says Alan. “It’s not just a square box; it’s got a nice design and décor too.” Robbie Williams performed his Swing When You’re Winning album back in 2013 and

Alan mentions this show in particular as the venue was able to fit in a big band orchestra, with almost 20 musicians. “It was incredible, I was really taken aback,” he notes. Sometimes bands and artists will approach the venue directly to play here but of course, Under the Bridge also has to select talent to perform one its stage. “Since day one, I didn’t want to pick cookie-cutter bands. We wanted acts that speak for themselves and it’s not just one genre – it’s a great stage and should be open for everyone to play,” Alan expresses. “When you have an act that you have grown up with or look up to, and they play at Under the Bridge, it’s a great accomplishment on many levels and there have been several acts that I have to pinch myself about, such as Sting and Madness,” he relays. Here’s to five more years. Stamford Bridge, Fulham Road, SW6 1HS, 020 7386 3327, underthebridge.co.uk

FINE AND CANDI In the run-up to her show at Under the Bridge (15 June), the Journal speaks with the crème de la crème of soul music, Candi Staton BETHAN REES Candi Staton
B
orn Canzetta Maria Staton in Alabama, Candi Staton has become one of the icons of the soul world and has duly earned her crown as one of the queens of the disco divas. Her tracks have transcended decades and trends – her gospel voice wraps around a melody like a python wraps around its prey and the outcome is something truly touching and timeless. This month, she’s bringing her harmonies to Under the Bridge as she celebrates the 40th and 30th anniversaries respectively of her two biggest hits Young Hearts Run Free and You’ve Got the Love. She began singing professionally in her teens with The Jewel Gospel Trio and toured with Sam Cooke and Mahalia Jackson in the 1950s before launching into the world of R&B and was signed to Rick Hall’s
Fame Records label in 1968. However, for around 25 years, Candi put her disco tiara back in the cupboard, left pop music, joined a church and went on to be part of some religious TV shows. “The competition was so intense that it drove me to drinking and I was doing a lot of things I shouldn’t have been doing. I had to give myself a life and get out the industry for a minute,” she tells me. However, when I ask her about her career highlight, she mentions her comeback after her sabbatical. “I was accepted so readily with open arms.” Performing on 15 June at Under the Bridge, Candi tells me she’s thrilled to be coming to the capital. “I get so excited when I’m getting ready to leave America to come to London; I feel little jumps in my stomach,” she begins to explain. “I love London – the people are so receptive and loyal. I have some super fans too who
always come and see me.” I want to know why she thinks some of her music, such as Young Hearts Run Free, is so cross-generational. “That song will never be over. Even if people don’t get it, the things I’m saying in the songs are still going on. ‘You will get the babies but you won’t have your man’ for example. We see that every day,” says Candi. “It’s like my friend Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive. It’s one of those songs you don’t get tired of, each generation can relate to it.” Candi has worked with many people in the industry such as Groove Armada, The Source and Rick Hall and I ask her if there’s anyone today she’d like to work with. “I love Jessie J, she’s a beautiful lady. I admire her so much,” she muses. “Also, Pixie Lott – one time she sang with me on stage – she’s so sweet.” From a woman who has lived an astonishingly varied life, including in terms of her relationships, which have been widely publicised, I wondered if she had any advice for a 20-something female. “Watch out for the little things – don’t overlook them as they have a tendency to turn into big things. And don’t get into relationships too fast before you get a chance to know someone,” she says. Noted, Candi. £33, 15 June, doors 7pm, Under the Bridge, Stamford Bridge, Fulham Road, SW6 1HS, 020 7386 3327, underthebridge.co.uk

A
fter qualifying from the Inchbald School of Design, Sarah Holdsworth Hunt, of her eponymous Fulhambased interior design company, worked alongside the esteemed Hugh Leslie before starting her own practice in Fulham. Previously working in property development, Sarah has always had an eye for design and looking at her contemporary yet classic portfolio – it’s clear to see why she had a career change. “I feel really happy when I create a design for a client that genuinely improves how they use a room,” Sarah begins to tell me. “Sometimes, the existing layout and colour schemes in a room does not fulfil the potential of the space. This is particularly rewarding to get right in London where every last bit of space needs to be optimised.” Working closely with a client is crucially important to Sarah so she can fully understand how they want to use a space and what their dream interior would look like. In terms of design style, Sarah doesn’t like to impose a particular look, more so she likes to “give them an individual interior that reflects them personally”. But, she doesn’t like to play into trends. “I generally like to keep my direction classic but current. I want an interior to look relevant today, but to also maintain that relevance in 10 years’ time,” she explains. “We live in a fast-paced world that is constantly changing – trends come and go but classic style usually prevails.” Although her designs have classic elements, this doesn’t mean she shies away from using colour. “I feel that with the British climate it is a very important addition to any interior,” Sarah says. Notably, there are some

significant issues to ponder before Sarah selecting shades. Holdsworth Hunt “It’s important to consider the light in a room and which way the room faces; some colours look very different in a south-facing room as opposed to a north-facing one,” she enlightens. Sarah both lives and works in Fulham

and often uses local suppliers when creating a project for a client. “I love the fabrics at Fermoie and in Christopher Farr, and there are some great shops along Wandsworth Bridge Road and New King’s Road. I visit Nina Burgess for carpets, Hector Finch lighting and Bazaar Velvet for bespoke rugs,” she tells me. “I also love the proximity of Chelsea Design Centre and all that it offers. There is a great deal of variety and I feel extremely lucky to have so much inspiration right on my doorstep.” Holdsworth Hunt Interiors incorporates furniture sourcing, joinery design and lighting design into her projects, so can take a brief from the very start to end, creating a space that works just as well for entertaining as it does for catering to the demands of family life. 6 Favart Road, SW6 4AZ, 020 7731 5508 hhuntinteriors.co.uk

C’ALICE IN WONDERLAND Take your taste buds on a tour of Italy at Fulham’s neighbourhood restaurant, C’Alice bethan rees
A
t the end of last year, I made a vow to myself that I will never again eat subpar Italian food – I was fed up with under seasoned, chewy Bolognese and floppy, undercooked pizza capricciosa. In a city where almost every other restaurant is of Italian origin, Londoners are spoilt and saturated by pizza and pasta joints. However, when a distinctive eatery opens, which screams of authenticity, this is one to latch onto, like a sloth to any nearby object. C’Alice is one of these places. Set up by husband and wife team, Giovanni Di Stefano and Alice Ravelli, the pair have brought their respective parts of north and south of Italy together on Munster Road – not only in terms of food, but wine as well. This establishment is very much both a fully functioning restaurant and a wine bar – the wine list showcases some of Italy and Sicily’s finest producers and can be served by the bottle or by the glass. Guests are able to try the wines across the board by the glass because C’Alice uses Coravin technology – a needle-through-the-cork system that enables you to siphon wine out of bottles without spoiling what’s left. Upon hearing this, I have visions of sitting at the bar for hours on end, shouting “next one!” at the defenceless staff. The kitchen is headed up by Carla Murgioni and the menu includes some Italian specialities that I’ve never heard of before – always a good sign. Sipping on a glass of Prosecco (when in Rome) my
guest and I order a selection of arancini, panelle (Sicilian chickpea fritters) and calamari fritti and it gives us a snapshot of what the rest of the meal is going to be; well-executed and charmingly moreish. Next up is the pan-fried scallops in grapefruit juice, a combination I hadn’t tried before – the acidity of the fruit cuts through the rich and decadent sweetness of the scallop. I’m a pasta fiend – specifically for seafood pasta – so usually when this catches my eye on a menu, I’m sold. However, I spy a dish I’d never tried: steak tagliata – a sirloin steak served with caramelised shallots and new potatoes. It’s heavily seasoned, giving the meat a faultless crust that my
heart so dearly desires, and cooked to purple-pink perfection. Some say that dessert doesn’t go to the stomach, it goes to the heart, so I committedly follow this philosophy. The tiramisu is dreamily balanced in cream, sponge and coffee – the word tiramisu can be translated to mean ‘cheer me up’, and it stuck true to its name. Hop over to Italy, by way of Fulham, and indulge yourself in Italian classics and educate yourself in more unfamiliar territory – whether that’s a regional dish or a glass of unfiltered Prosecco. 199 Munster Road, SW6 6BX, 020 7385 4302, calicerestaurant.com

IT’S ALL PART OF THE PLAN As part of the ongoing Earls Court Masterplan, the Lillie Square development is the first phase within the project. Located on Seagrave Road, there will be 808 new homes set around a new garden square. The development has just introduced a collection of new apartments with private gardens called The Garden Collection. The new set of luxury and modern apartments will include 32 two-bedroom, two-storey apartments across four mansion blocks on offer. The new homes are the first at Lillie Square to offer private gardens of up to 540-square foot that have been designed by award-winning landscape designer, Andy Sturgeon. The first completions for The Garden Collection are scheduled for 2018. “Each garden has been designed to maximise this outdoor space and will offer beautiful and practical hideaways for residents to enjoy,” Andy says. Some of the many benefits of living at Lillie Square are the five-star facilities that are all on-site and easily accessible at the Clubhouse, including: a spa, 20-metre swimming pool, gym, cinema, private dining space and a residents’ car club service, giving tenants the access to a choice of the latest Aston Martin’s sports cars.
