Dear Resident, Crunching through the leaves of Fulham Palace, I begin to stop being tiresome of the windy, rainy weather and embrace the autumn – besides, there are few places that compare to Fulham under a cloak of amber shades and crisp blue skies. To celebrate this wonderful area and its nature, Elizabeth Finney walks us through Bishop’s Park to greet the 500-year-old Holm oak tree, marking National Tree Week, on page nine. Elsewhere in this issue, Bethan Rees meets Made In Chelsea’s Rosie Fortescue to talk all things sparkly as she unveils her latest jewellery collection and her life in Fulham(p.16). Emily Adams takes readers on a whirlwind tour of what visitors can expect to see at North End Road Festive Markets, from page 11. Also, the Journal takes its taste-buds to the south of France at Bandol (p.27) Make sure you follow us on Twitter, @FulhamRJ for all the latest SW6 updates.

Accomplished Academy Since making the transformation into Hurlingham Academy in January this year, the Peterborough Road school has witnessed some significant changes. Before gaining its new status, the school was struggling – but now, in quite a drastic turnaround, exam results have risen considerably and its prospects are much better. To celebrate the achievements, the school recently held a foundation day for students, staff and local residents with executive principal Ben Parnell expressing his vision for the future. While Olympic skeleton bobsleigh champion Shelley Rudman stopped by to speak at the ceremony, students performed songs and staff and governors signed pledges to support the academy in becoming an ‘outstanding’ school. Business is booming Best Customer Service, Best Local Employer and Best Independent Retailer are just some of categories for this year’s Hammersmith & Fulham Brilliant Business Awards. Last year saw independent retailers stealing the show with a market florist, a theatre and two local restaurants receiving awards. Over 400 people gathered at the Town Hall to celebrate the winners and this year is set to be another success. Residents, workers and customers can all join in the public vote to help crown their favourite businesses with nominations closing on 12 November and the awards ceremony taking place on 19 November. lbhf.gov.uk
Esteemed Fulham-ite and intrepid explorer, Henry Worsley has set off on his third Antarctic expedition, hoping to become the first person to cross the continent unaided. Worsley aims to recreate the unfinished journey of Sir Ernest Shackleton, a route still much unexplored. His last eventful expedition even saw him lose a tooth while attempting to eat a frozen Mars bar (pictured) but that certainly hasn’t stopped him from venturing even further this time. The Duke of Cambridge has become Patron of the solo challenge which will support The Royal Foundation’s Endeavour Fund which helps injured and sick servicemen and women. shackletonsolo.org
A novel idea Long-time resident of Fulham, Keiko Itoh has decided to recount her mother Eiko’s life, trapped in Japanese-occupied Shanghai as a young woman. In her début novel My Shanghai, 1942-46, the Japanese author turns reality into fiction and written in diary form, tells how her mother’s life became increasingly challenging with Japan’s eventual defeat. She draws on family memories and her mother’s experiences to give a rare perspective on war in the Pacific.
Young talent Local haute couture designer Antonia PughThomas has enlisted the help of budding young designers to create a one-off evening dress. The lucky individual will get to work with the woman famed for designing bespoke clothing for British and European aristocracy, and even have their design displayed in her Fulham Road shop window throughout December. Come the end of December, the design will be auctioned on eBay with all proceeds going to the Glass Door charity, which provides shelter for homeless people in West London. Elizabeth Finney heads over to Bishop’s Park to meet and greet a 500-year-old Holm oak tree in celebration of National Tree Week
T
he parks and gardens around Fulham Palace are the perfect place to go to witness the changing seasons. The trees are a flurry of colour, donning the ever-popular ‘dip-dye’ look before settling into their winter shades. Greens and yellows stretch all the way through to pinks and reds, and it’s hard to believe that this shady sanctuary is still within the bounds of London. One famous resident of these gardens is a much-loved Quercus ilex, or Holm oak. Estimated to be approximately 500 years old, it is thought to have been planted by either Bishop Grindal (1553-1559) or Bishop Aylmer (1576-1594). It is very possible that it is the oldest surviving species of its kind in England and this is a contributing factor to it being named a Great Tree of London. This title was awarded to 41 London landmark trees in 1988 due to the Great Storm, which tore through the city the year before. Despite having a hollow base, the Fulham Palace Holm oak is showing no signs of ageing, and its branches reach out in all directions, creating a vast canopy of blue-green leaves. Incidentally, the leaves of the Holm oak differ from most other species and its leaves are dark and spiny, not dissimilar to holly. The Holm oak species was brought over to Great Britain in the late 1500s and though it has been naturalised in the UK, it is native to the eastern Mediterranean regions. Nowadays, it is one of few evergreen oak tree species found in the British Isles, though it is more common in the south due to its tendency to die or lose its leaves in particularly cold winters. Originally, they were planted along coastlines because they are highly resistant to the salt from sea winds, so act well as a windbreak. However,
due to climate change, the Holm oak is finding its roots in places further inland such as the Cotswolds and the Isle of Wight, spreading rapidly but being maintained in the latter by goats. The tree’s catkins are a good source of pollen for bees and other insects in early spring, of which the female flowers develop into acorns. The Holm oak has featured among the pages of Oscar Wilde’s The Happy Prince and Other Tales, as well as Homer’s Collection of Hesiod and Rudyard Kipling’s Actions and Reactions. It’s hard to say when it was first actively cultivated, but it is known that the Romans used Holm oak wood to make wine casks, tools and cart or carriage wheels, and the Ancient Greeks used the leaves weaved into a crown as a mark of honour or as a tool with which to tell the future. Its acorns were, at that time, worn as jewellery to increase fertility. National Tree Week was launched in 1975 by The Tree Council, a charity which runs campaigns and events promoting the importance of trees in an ever-changing environment. Harold Wilson, who was prime minister in the year of the launch, took part by planting a Holm oak at Chequers. This year, 40 years on, The Tree Council will be running events across the whole of the UK, bringing together schools, community groups and local authorities to make Britain more tree conscious and to plant trees. hildren singing joyful Christmas carols, parents sipping on warm mulled wine and the sweet smell of roasted chestnuts filling the air – there’s no escaping it now; the festive season is finally upon us so you might as well embrace it. And where better to do so than in the comfort of your home town? Fulham has got Christmas all wrapped up for you this year, with not one but two days of festive markets on North End Road. On 28 November and 12 December, cars
will have to make way for seasonal shoppers as North End Road becomes completely pedestrianised. Stalls will line the street on both sides to tempt you with unusual stocking fillers and gifts. And if that wasn’t enough, the entertainment is sure to surprise you with live music, a children’s funfair, bauble inspired stilt walkers and balloon-modelling elves. The Fulham Brass band will even be making an appearance on 12 December alongside a giant Christmas tree and reindeer. What more could you want?

What are you looking forward to at the markets this year? I’m looking forward to the businesses gaining more exposure and hopefully more sales. It’s always good when we see people that are passionate and driven but low sales can be disappointing. More sales and exposure can be really energising for them.
What do you do? We describe it as social enterprise incubation for small growing businesses. The company was designed to help local people with fledgling businesses and hopefully take them to the next level. They have to have aspirations to take on other people, particularly the long-term unemployed. It’s always been more about locality and business viability, but we have quite a few fashion brands. I love them all, I couldn’t pick one. What do you love about being a business in the local area? I love the support of the council and its councillors. Sometimes councillors can be faceless people, but not in Hammersmith &

TRUCOLOURS Name: Natalie Gow
Husband and wife duo, Giles and Fiona Sciolti have got the sweet treats sorted for the Christmas markets. Award-winning artisan chocolatier Fiona, uses locally sourced, seasonal ingredients to make some interesting flavours. Including flowers, fruits, herbs and different types of honey, she creates vegan-friendly chocolate as well as selection boxes, swizzle sticks and even chocolate pizzas. Some of Fiona’s work focusses on softcentred truffles, but she also has a very popular range of chocolate bars which follow her philosophy; hand-made, natural ingredients for flavour and all of her work is gluten-free. They also make excellent gifts for Christmas (or for yourself). After they were invited to the summer markets, they were both flattered and delighted to be invited to join in with the Christmas celebrations and are very much looking forward to it.
What do you do? I create positive and uplifting designs and print them onto T-shirts and hoodies for men, women and children. These are positively themed to help the wearer feel great about themselves while they are wearing it. The name and logo represent the true you. What do you love about being a business in Fulham? Fulham is so vibrant and exciting and has such a great community atmosphere. The locals are so friendly and happy and always greet you with a smile. I love that they always seem have a little story to tell. It really helps you feel welcomed and appreciated. I love being part of that. What are you looking forward to at the markets? I am so excited about being part of this year’s Christmas Markets. It’s such an exciting time of the year. I love the hustle and bustle and Christmas markets seem to have that celebratory energy of coming together. To be part of the whole atmosphere of Fulham and the infamous North End Road at such a special time of the year, is definitely a dream come true for me and I’m very excited to be part of the whole experience.
Following in Fiona’s footsteps as a chocolatier, Giles has created his own spinoff called Black Cat Fudge which will also make an appearance at the markets. scioltichocolates.com
Have you got anything special lined up this year? I’ll have some new Christmas products lined up for the markets. I’ve been designing a completely new product and this will be the first time I’m launching it. I’ll also have some new designs that I ALSO Look haven’t previously out for… released. So Vagabond Wines there’s a lot I’m Pipoca Furniture looking forward Dazy Kitchen to. I’m feeling GoneBurger very inspired and Whole Foods Market can’t wait to The Cock Tavern share my Yasna Stones inspiration at such an exciting event!

Bethan Rees sits down with Connecticut-born CEO of Waterworks, Peter Sallick, to discuss the newly launched Kitchen showroom at its Fulham home
W
ith its roots back in 1920s Connecticut, Waterworks has become one of the eminent luxury bathroom brands internationally, and has now launched its kitchen brand in the UK, which can be seen at the showroom on King’s Road. In 1925, Samuel Grogins started a plumbing supply business and, his daughter Barbara, following in her father’s footsteps, and her husband Robert Sallick, set out to create a revolution in the bathing world. In 1978, Waterworks was born and the duo bought a new level of visual appeal to the home. Fast-forward to 2015 and the couple’s son Peter is now the face of the company as CEO, having been a part of the team since 1993. The showroom in the heart of SW6 opened last year and I wanted to find out why Waterworks chose this location. “The customers here understand architecture, the design, the message you get from the street when you drive by and see the colours and the textures and the lighting and everything just from the outside,” he begins. “I think there’s a little bit of
traditional London in the façade, but also updated with who we are. It’s obviously a destination. It’s important to be convenient and it is good to have other design related companies around.” Inspired by traditional American design, Waterworks also incorporates mid-century modern elements that results in a flawless yet welcoming vibe to any bathroom, and now any kitchen. “The idea to create kitchens started because we knew we had the capabilities to design and make products for bathrooms; if you’re making taps for the bath and then for the kitchen, that’s not a big leap.” So, the transition into to (arguably) the heart of the home, was an organic one. Peter finds inspiration for the Waterworks designs everywhere he goes, from markets to hotels. “It’s all about going out and seeing things. You pull details out of situations and experiences,” he says. “I was a in a restaurant not so long ago and the way they used a particular panelling on the wall was something I’d never seen before. This got me thinking about our kitchen cabinets and how we could translate this style.” Waterworks is a collaborative design process between Peter, his mother, the product development team and its category leaders: they each bring ideas to the table. “We meet every week and plan ‘stories’ for our designs. We play with different materials and colours,” says Peter. What’s in store for Peter and Waterworks next year? “In 2016, we’re back-to-back on launching new products so that’s a real focus of ours, and we’ve got our first location on the continent in Europe.” 579-581 King’s Road, SW6 2EH, 020 7384 4000, waterworks.com

Bethan Rees meets TV personality and jewellery designer Rosie Fortescue as she unveils her own jewellery line
Y
ou may recognise Fulham resident Rosie Fortescue from E4’s Made in Chelsea – but this month, she’s hanging up her TV hat and has been hard at work in her studio, as she has just launched her latest jewellery line. Also known for her successful fashion and lifestyle blog, AtFashionForte – which documents her wardrobe and fashion must-haves – the new collection includes elegant stacking rings, bracelets with multicoloured gemstones and geometric jewelled earrings in a variety of metals; there’s truly something for every occasion.
Rosie Fortescue (image by Anna Sandul)
when we were younger, where we would dress each other up in my mothers jewels. If someone gave you jewellery as a present what would you want it to be? Anything with thought behind it. There’s nothing better than pieces with a personal touch. From where do you get your inspiration? I’m inspired by my own taste in jewellery but I’ve also created pieces that I know are versatile enough to be worn both day and night. I wanted my collection to be wearable for everyone and for it to be fun to wear the brand.
How would you describe your style? I would say my style is structured. I go from super-feminine to androgynous, depending on my mood. What made you want to design jewellery? I have been a magpie for as long as I can remember. My earliest memories are of raiding my mother’s jewellery box. I’m not big into wearing colour, so for me, jewellery is how I like to accessorise and bring life to an outfit. Have you alway had an interest in jewellery? I’m absolutely obsessed with jewellery and always have been. I also have a twin called Lily and, like I said, I have memories from
Who is your favourite jewellery designer? Rolex for watches and Chanel for a statement vintage necklace. Who can you imagine wearing your jewellery? I want my brand to be worn by everyone. My dream would be for Olivia Palermo (American socialite, blogger, model and everything in-between) to be a fan of the brand, but my aim really is for people to enjoy wearing the collection and have fun with it.
- 16 -
What’s your favourite metal to work with? I’ve used a lot of black rhodium in my latest collection. I’ve loved it for a while and it’s not used a lot. I have mixed it with delicate coloured stones to add a warmer touch to the dark metal. Do you have one favourite piece in the new collection? It has to be the bangle necklace, which is my hero piece. It’s super-elegant will be ideal worn over a plain white top or a little black dress.
Would you like to open a shop? It would be my dream one day to open a shop but for now I’m going to be working from home and building my empire step by step. What’s next for Rosie Fortescue? Designing the next collection. I would love to expand the brand in the future to more than just jewellery. The collection is available from rosie-fortescue.com
Would you say there are different pieces for different occasions? The Hexagon Earrings are a great standout piece for the evening and the Wing Stud Earrings are ideal for day-to-day. What would you say your collection says about you? I would like to say it’s vibrant, feminine and fun. Your collection features a lot of geometric shapes what is it about these that you like? I like the way the angles stand out on the skin. The stone’s colours are varied and bright and make these pieces statement designs. Do you have one piece of jewellery that you can’t live without? Apart from my watch, which I can’t leave the house without, I feel naked without my rings on. Why did you choose Fulham as your home? Have you always lived here? I grew up in Fulham and then went to boarding school out of London so it’s great being back here. It definitely feels like home. Where do you like to spend your time in the area? I absolutely love to spend time at Hally’s, a Californian-inspired hangout – it’s so amazing. Also, Little H, which is owned by the same husband and wife team on the opposite side of the road, is my go-to for takeaway treats like banana bread. I also go to The Hurlingham Club to walk my dog Noodle (a dachshund), and Goat on Fulham Road has the best truffled macaroni and cheese. - 17 -

Going for gold How one shop on Fulham Road is setting its own gold standard
Image: Sarel jan

“T
he best thing about working here is the jewellery. The pieces are absolutely beautiful.” Such are the words of Gana Begu, manager of Gold Price Project. Originally founded in 1988, Gold Price Project developed its trade in Germany, where they now run five shops, in addition to others in the United States; however, in more recent times, the owners looked for expansion opportunities into the UK market. After significant time and effort were invested in a property search, the company eventually found the perfect gem of a storeholding on 662 Fulham Road, which led to the launch of their first British shop on 15 May this year. Gold Price Project specialises in selling a variety of gold jewellery, including earrings, pendants, rings, necklaces and brooches. “Gold never goes out of fashion,” Gana affirms, explaining what draws customers to the shop. “Plus, it will always hold value – it is a good investment,” she underlines. The shop is certainly very different to typical high street brands and has a number of one-off pieces. Gana explains: “Due to the company’s heritage, we stock a lot of pieces by a number of German and Polish brands. At the moment we also offer a collection by Roberto Bravo – each item is filled with colour; they really are beautiful.” The company offers a newly-developed website so that prospective customers can browse, and even buy, any piece of jewellery online that is available in-store – from more modestly priced offerings, all the way up to a stunning 18karat gold necklace bursting with diamonds, on sale for a cool
£12,360. So what is it that most often attracts the attention of buyers? “White gold and rose gold were the most popular in 2014, but customers most often want to buy yellow gold – they want to make it clear to everyone that it is gold they are wearing,” says Gana. “However, we have started to stock a small range of silver products, due to the demand.” While this broad range will cover most tastes, Gold Price Project also creates bespoke pieces to cater for those after very specific designs. Depending on the specifications, the shop takes two to three weeks to make each bespoke item, which benefit from the input and expertise from the company owners. The shop is keen to take influence from these commissions as well: “Often we look at what customers are asking for and this feeds into the types of pieces that we buy, so that we can keep up with the latest fashion trends,” says Gana. As well as buying and selling silver and gold, what else does Gold Price Project have in store? “This year will be our first Christmas in the UK, so we are likely to offer some late opening days and some special promotions too; we also have a brand new collection coming into the store in time for Christmas.” And while they will be looking to shine at the end of this year, Gana confirms that their sights are already set on richer horizons: “We’re already looking to open our next store, once we find the right location. The UK has a strong market for gold and we would love to eventually have 10 stores within the west London area.” With ambitions such as these, it is no surprise that the company may be about to enter its golden age. 662 Fulham Road, SW6 5RX, 020 7736 1926, goldpriceproject.co.uk

The Household Cavalry Foundation tells the Journal about its festive fundraising plans
T
he Household Cavalry Foundation (HCF) is the official charity for the Household Cavalry and exists to provide charitable and pastoral support to all members of the Household Cavalry family, whether they are serving soldiers, operational casualties, veterans or their dependants. It also supports the protection and development of the rich heritage that surrounds the history of the Regiment and the welfare of retired horses. HCF relies solely on public donations to provide continued support to our five charitable objectives. To date, HCF has helped over 800 serving soldiers by supporting their ongoing education, training and sports programmes along with aiding the transition from the army to the civilian world post-service. In addition, HCF continues to support those injured on operations throughout their recovery process; from enabling rehabilitation from a practical stance with adaptation of facilities to providing financial support for any qualifications that may help their chosen career, or supporting their immediate families, who also are integral to the recovery process. In order for us to continue helping to deal with the volume of welfare requests we receive, fundraising events have become increasingly vital. For 2015, we are delighted to announce that our main fundraising event is ‘Cavalry Carols’, a Christmas carol concert taking place on Tuesday 8 December at the Royal Military Chapel (The Guards’ Chapel). ‘Cavalry Carols’ will be a spectacle of Christmas cheer with readings from members of the Regiment interspersed with musical delights provided by the Band of the
Household Cavalry, the Guards’ Chapel Choir and the wonderful Windsor Military Wives Choir. We are thrilled to announce that classical crossover artist, Camilla Kerslake, will be joining us as our extra special guest performer. Camilla is a Classical Brit Award nominee and has performed at numerous Camilla Kerslake sporting events, including singing the National Anthem for England Rugby Union at Twickenham Stadium. Once a month, the café turns into a supper club for cosy, intimate dining. Let them eat cake Last month saw the opening of Patisserie Valerie, which takes the place of Mexican cantina Gauca. The café is located on Fulham Road just minutes away from the bustling Fulham Broadway tube station. Open from early morning until early evening, you can indulge in handmade pastries, speciality sandwiches, baristaserved coffee, all-day breakfast, brunches and a range of delicious main meals. Even better when that chef is Olivia Grant – modest, incredibly accommodating and clearly great at her job. I fall in love with the crab salad and flat bread starter and will certainly be heading back for the recipe. Bonsoir Le Pain Quotidien hits us with two lots of exciting news this month. First, it has just opened its 25th location perfectly coinciding with its 25th anniversary, and, luckily for us, its’s on Fulham Road. Second, it has launched a brand new evening menu, available only at this site. With a cocktail list, draft beers, sharing boards and charcuterie, Le Pain Quotidien smoothly changes into an exclusive night-time hotspot, and with traditional French dishes such as coq au vin on the menu, the boulangerie has never looked more appealing. 212 Fulham Road, SW10 9PJ, 020 3823 4510, lepainquotidien.co.uk

THE PERFECT BIRD John Fynan of Parson’s Nose guides you through how to pick the perfect turkey for all your festive needs Our signs have been put outside and the orders have started trickling in, signalling, for us at least, the beginning of the festive season. I am, of course, talking turkeys. The traditional Christmas bird, on our tables since the times of Henry VIII, is to many the highlight of the Christmas Day feast. With so many differing options available to buy, here are our top tips for selecting the perfect bird. Our recommendation is a free-range bronze. The bronze turkey has risen in popularity over the past few years and has all the subtleties and depth of flavour to stand up to the occasion. Responsible rearing and good husbandry are of utmost importance and slow growing traditional breeds that reach full maturity naturally will always result in a tastier mouthful on the fork. Our birds spend their days exploring the Downland Meadows and trees of the Walters’ Family Bower Farm in Berkshire, enjoying the freedom and fresh air.
Ole! Enrique Olvera, arguably Mexico’s greatest chef, is set to release his début book entitled Mexico from the Inside Out. Inspired by a culinary tour of his country, Olvera realised his ambition to deconstruct and rebuild Mexico’s gastronomic culture, starting with his restaurant Pujol. With 65 experimental recipes, mouth-watering photography and anecdotes from the man himself, this cookbook is a must for any chilli-loving foodie. Did somebody say chocolate tacos? £39.95, available from Hurlingham Books, 91 Fulham High Street, SW6 3JS, 020 7736 4363, hurlinghambooks.com
We always recommend buying a fresh turkey for Christmas, although a frozen bird will still be tasty as long you steer clear of mass produced and intensive farming methods, which does not result in a stress-free life for the animal. A good indicator of this level of care and attention is to ask your butcher if the birds were produced by a member of the Traditional Farmfresh Turkey Association (TFTA). This also ensures the birds consume a natural diet without the addition of growth promoters or any other hidden nasties. You will want to select a bird that has been dry plucked. Dry plucking is a more labour-intensive process than the industrial alternative of wet plucking but produces much better results. The plucking is done by hand and leaves the skin of the bird smooth and silky. It also benefits shelf life. By removing the moisture element of wet plucking, the growth of bacteria is slowed and you are able to store your bird for longer. Lastly, buy a turkey which has been hung. Hanging the bird in the same way that game or aged steaks are hung ensures the turkey is moist, tender and develops a fuller, mature flavour. Cream of the crop Philippa Short meets Lila Sarhang Zadeh, baker and owner of Fulham Road’s new Halva Bakery & Pâtisserie, to talk sugar and spice and all things nice
I
magine what freshly made pain au chocolat smells like, and that’s the aroma that hits you as you enter Halva. Think warm baked pastry straight out of the oven, with a delicious chocolate undertone. Am I making you hungry yet? The bakery is simply decorated, keeping the focus on the beautiful array of handmade goods produced by the incredibly talented pastry chefs and the baker and owner Lila Sarhang Zadeh. It’s warm and inviting, just like Lila, who upon meeting instantly makes you feel welcome. She is hugely enthusiastic about her French pâtisserie and bakery and is therefore willing to share all. Lila’s love for all things cooking started in her birthplace of Algeria. The tradition of baking for big weddings and the French influences in the pâtisseries of Algeria such
as éclairs and mille-feuille, sparked Lila’s passion. She trained in France as a pastry chef and stayed there for 10 years with her family, until she made the decision to move to the UK. I ask Lila her reason for moving over here and she replies: “London is a nice city, expensive, but still very nice and cosmopolitan. You feel like a Londoner not an expat – you feel at home.” In terms of the bakery, I am intrigued by the name and why Lila chose it. “We named it Halva for our children,” she explains. “My husband is French-Iranian and I am Algerian-American so we tried to find a name from our cultures, so we went for Halva, which means something sweet.” I don’t think they could have chosen a more suitable name. Speaking of sweet things, all of the treats and pastries at Halva are made in-house daily; from macarons, cupcakes, tarts and cakes to meringues

and marshmallows. According to Lila, the marshmallows are the most popular product. She tells me: “I have people come in and buy eight of them and I think wow, that’s a lot – but then again, they are so good. They taste completely different when they are made fresh.” The team at Halva are very experimental with their flavours; for example, you can sample After Eight macarons or grapefruit and strawberry marshmallows. Lila tells me the flavours for the non-pastry products really depend on their mood. At the moment, the team are thinking of working with floral flavours such as lavender, but
For autumn, Lila has just swapped the berry tart for an apple and cinnamon variation when it comes to the pastries, they tend to be more seasonal. For autumn, Lila has just swapped the berry tart for an apple and cinnamon variety. However, one creation that I have a feeling will always remain on the counter is Lila’s favourite: the chocolate tart. “I have a sweet tooth; I think I eat about five chocolate tarts a week. I will always have some for my children but I tell them to make sure there is always one left for mum,” she laughs. Despite being professionally trained as a pastry chef, Lila is the baker at Halva and, according to the World Bread Awards, a great one at that. Last month, Halva won a gold award for its baguettes, so don’t miss a chance to pop in and taste them to see why. All the bread is artisan and baked without preservatives; Lila also makes the croissants and a range of sandwiches and quiches for those looking for a more savoury option. I would recommend trying both sweet and savoury delicacies though. Lila’s devotion to Halva is clear when she tells me about her daily routine: “A day usually starts around 3.30am with lots of coffee while we prepare all the dough, cutting and shaping it and warming up the ovens. The pastry chef arrives around
5.30am and then we get everything ready and out for 8am. The rest of the day is spent taking care of the stock. Usually we end up having lunch together, having a chat and a laugh.” As well as bread and pastries, Halva also creates bespoke cakes – made to order from the Lila Sarhan g Zadeh biscuits to the cream. Lila and her team are so widely accomplished, I’m left wondering: is there anything they can’t do? Bringing our chat to a close, I ask her what she loves about Fulham and she praises the area for its locals. It has become her home, with South Park her favourite place. She tells me: “We feel good here, the kids are at school and we know a lot of people now. It has that village feel to it with its butcher and cheesemonger.” And now the baker, I add. “It is still London, but feels more personal if that makes sense?” I think her description makes perfect sense. “The people who are now regulars had lots of advice and supported us right from the beginning. Sometimes when you feel down, it’s nice when people tell you to keep pushing ahead. Even when the work on the shop was still being completed, people were looking round the door telling me how excited they were at Halva opening; that was a great feeling. It was wonderful that the community were (and still are) behind us.” Head down to Halva to meet Lila and her fabulous team before sampling the delicious baked goods and pastries; but be warned, there is an absolutely astounding amount of choice so make sure you have room. 771 Fulham Road, SW6 5HA, 020 7384 2045, halvabakery.co.uk

With all this over, it was a flying visit to the dessert menu for a milk fondant with caramelised figs, tarte tatin and an oozing, melting, seductive chocolate fondant. There was not, unsurprisingly, a word uttered while these were devoured. Paired with their best-matching dessert wines, this course was enjoyed relatively slowly, as though it had taken us the previous two courses to get into the south-of-France mindset and leaving the glamourous staff and their exceptional food and wine knowledge to step out onto a chilly October night was shocking and disappointing. Thankfully, an umbrella was left behind, giving us the perfect excuse to return and enjoy the simple, elegant dishes that Bandol offers. Solar panels advice
Lottery win: please advise
My husband is extremely keen on us having solar panels fitted on to our roof to cut the electricity usage, reduce the bill, and, most importantly, minimise our home’s carbon consumption. In theory, it’s a no-brainer – and with government subsidies due to decrease at the end of the year, we need to make a quick decision. My only reservation is based simply on the fact that I can’t see that anyone else has installed solar panels around where I live. Please enlighten me.
Unbelievably, my husband and I have just won a significant amount of money in the National Lottery. It’s not millions of pounds but it’s enough to make our planned house move a lot easier, and we’re looking at an extra bedroom or two. However, I would like some advice. I’m not sure whether to explain to friends or family where this money has come from. My close friends know we were really stretched financially in our house hunt so they’re naturally going to be curious about why we’ve suddenly “skipped a step” on the housing ladder, and although I don’t want to pretend, I also don’t wish to be known as “the Lottery winner” whenever I pop into someone’s house for coffee, at the school gates or at dinner parties. Part of me feels I can tell my close friends and ask them to keep it quiet, but in my heart I know these secrets have a tendency to leak. I did think about pretending it was an inheritance recently left to me, but my family are not wealthy so that’s pretty unlikely and could fall apart when my family visits and talk to my close friends. Does anyone have any advice? I know is a bit of a first world problem
Mon 14 Sep, 2015 9.24am You need to do your sums. Think about how much you have to invest to ensure you get something that looks like a return and how long it needs for that return to pay off the investment. Solar panels are only good when there is enough sun exposure and your roof has to be a certain angle to maximise the exposure. It’s better if your home is south or south-west facing, obviously, and you need a lot of sunny days. Then, consider how much is it going to reduce your electricity bill?

First, congratulations! I think you should only tell the people you really trust, if you have to tell anyone at all. I cannot imagine any of my friends asking me how I financed a new purchase, an extension or a house move. I hope you and your family enjoy your winnings and that it will help you accomplish things. Let people wonder and keep your knowledge to yourself. I think it will make your life easier in the long term. Thurs 1 Oct, 2015 11.19am Well done you! Don’t worry about explaining yourself to anyone; you don’t need to declare your accounts to friends. If anyone is rude enough to ask about your financial affairs, then think up one answer that you can prepare beforehand.

Bethan Rees tries out the latest skincare technology: the facial brush
Shooting stars
As someone with an affinity for grabbing a quick cleansing wipe in the evening to remove the day’s makeup, using a facial brush for the first time is one of life’s more unusual experiences. Initially, I thought it would feel as though I was putting my face through a carwash; how wrong I was. Trying Swedish skincare brand FOREO’s Luna device has completely reformed by skin routine. The unique brush surface of soft silicone touch-points makes for a nice change to some of the more sharp, bristle brushes I’ve seen advertised. The Luna pulsates and allows for effective yet extremely gentle removal of grime and makeup from the skin’s surface.

The Fulham Boys School’s new home In an exciting announcement from Mayor of London Boris Johnson, The Fulham Boys School has found a new permanent home at the Fulham Police Station and is expected to move into its new dwellings in September 2017. The free school has been on the hunt for a permanent home for the last year as it’s currently in a temporary site in West Kensington. The Mayor pledged to find a permanent site in 2014 after it was unable to locate a suitable building for opening. Located on the corner of Fulham Road and Heckfield Place, it’s reported that the station will be keeping the policing frontline counter service, but it’s not known what level of service this will offer to the community. The Mayor says the location and size of the site make it an ideal place for a school, and all proceeds from the sale will be reinvested into frontline policing. “The new free school will be a real community asset, giving 800 more pupils the opportunity to have a top-class education,” he adds. However, this move leaves the borough of Hammersmith & Fulham with just one full-time police station on Shepherds Bush Road. Fulham MP and the school’s patron, Greg Hands, says: “I am overjoyed that we finally have a permanent site for the excellent Fulham Boys School. This comes after many years of searching and quite a number of twists and turns! I look forward to the school moving to its new site in the heart of Fulham in due course.” fulhamboysschool.org

A building
with a story to tell
49 Atalanta Street in Fulham has lived through over 100 years of history. It’s a testament to the humble paper bag, a husband and wife’s entrepreneurial spirit and a family business at the heart of the community
I
n the summer of 1902, on a street bordering green fields, James Hunt and his wife Elizabeth opened a new building for their flourishing paper company. Apart from the Crabtree Inn, the cemetery and the nearby Lygon Almshouses, their neighbours along Fulham Palace Road were few and far between. Horse-drawn buses were the main way to get around, gaslights lit the streets and moving picture films were the latest craze. By then, James and Elizabeth had been married for 33 years. He came from modest beginnings and she was the daughter of a printer and undertaker. Together they’d begun their business hand-making paper bags in their front room on Claybrook Road and selling them to local shops. In those days, paper bags were a new invention and in demand – from sweetshops to corn chandlers, goods were weighed out and bagged for customers to take home. James Hunt Limited expanded into letterpress printing and box and ice cream pot making. The factory
provided jobs for hundreds of locals and took on young apprentices to give them a worthwhile trade. It was a close-knit community, with its own cricket and football clubs (avidly followed by James and his sons) and an annual outing for the workers. In 1910, a sports day pitted colleague against colleague in athletic feats like sprinting, egg-and-ladle racing and sack jumping. When James died in 1911, 200 of his employees, the Mayor of Fulham and the local community all came to pay their respects at his funeral – the church was so crowded many had to wait outside. Ten years later, Elizabeth’s final resting place was by his side in Fulham Palace Road Cemetery. Their sons and grandsons kept their legacy going until 1973, despite wartime paper shortages and the onslaught of the Blitz, - 37 -
when 16 bombs fell within just half a mile of the site. Now, 113 years after Hunt’s Paper Factory was built, its community spirit is being restored. The building has been sensitively converted into 34 apartments with industrial features, so those searching for a new home have the chance to own a slice of Fulham history. THE
dynamic DUO
The Journal speaks to Roseanna Keith and Charlie Russell of Strutt & Parker’s Fulham branch to find out more about them

I
step through a smart, black front door and walk into a spacious living room. I’m in a house on Brookville Road and have come to speak to Roseanna Keith and Charlie Russell, two young, energetic residential sales negotiators at Fulham’s Strutt & Parker office. To kick proceedings off, I’m given a tour of the house where I’m treated to a viewing of the bright, airy living room. The wooden flooring, which spans the whole of this level, is high-quality and tasteful, much like the rest of the interior fixtures. The spacious kitchen, with handsome fittings and central island, opens out onto a tidy, neat patio that would be perfect for enjoying a few glasses of wine on in the summer. Upstairs, there’s a couple of bedrooms and a master suite, all as immaculate as downstairs, as well as a well-designed bathroom. The top floor is occupied by another bedroom, this one with a huge Velux window overlooking the rooftops of Fulham. It’s a

gorgeous house with not even a thread of carpet out of place. We settle down in the living room to begin our chat and immediately it’s clear that Roseanna and Charlie are passionate about what they do. Charlie has been with the company since January 2013, and Roseanna since June of the same year. Charlie goes on to tell me about what it was like when he first joined. “The office was going through a transition phase,” he begins. “I had a little training period before getting straight into it.” Roseanna, who was scouted for her position, nods: “I got straight into it too. I had to learn Fulham very quickly – it was a really busy time when I joined but I found it easy to work my way through the processes and get to grips with everything.” The Fulham office is small and personable – with only five members of sales staff based there – so it comes as no surprise that Roseanna found it easy to settle in. I turn to Charlie to ask whether he knew SW6 before he joined. “I knew the area,” he confirms. “At that stage in the year though, the market was performing strongly so I got to know Fulham really well.” He goes on enthusiastically to say: “I often look back and think about how lucky it is to join an estate agent when the market is like that; it gave me a lot of confidence and energy.” Roseanna tells me: “It’s a lot more demanding of your skills. I know that if I was starting now, it’d be trickier to gain so much confidence so quickly. A buoyant market, such as it was when we joined, is good for developing your abilities and we - 62 -
were fortunate in that regard. The more confident you are, the easier the skills are to pick up.” You can tell that these two, who were plunged gracefully into the deep-end, have responded well to being put to the task. Their eyes light up when they talk about their first few weeks and there’s no sign of their energy lessening. We move on to discuss Strutt & Parker, a company that, in Roseanna’s words, “puts an emphasis on personal service.” She continues, saying: “Client relationships are absolutely paramount, both to us and to Strutt & Parker. Because there’s only five of us here in SW6, we all know our clients really well and we frequently have conversations with them.” She adds: “It all starts from communication and good relations – I’d say that at least 50 per cent of our jobs is all about that. It’s all about creating the right environment and maintaining a good bond with the client.” I realise that this connection with clients knows no boundaries, once I hear Charlie and Roseanna’s story about ‘the fish’. “A house was sold that had a pond in the garden and the new owner didn’t
want it – nor the 10 Koi carp that lived in it,” Roseanna begins. “I decided that I would auction the fish off and donate the proceeds to Great Ormond Street Hospital on behalf of Strutt & Parker, which has previously raised more than £200,000 for charity. We had to fish them out but needed the pond draining a bit.” Charlie begins smiling as Roseanna tells me how he set up a make-shift syphon to drain the pond. “It was a moment of genius!” he laughs. The fish were successfully collected and sold for charity, in a wonderful representation of the passion and effort that Charlie and Roseanna put into their jobs. Your dedicated Strutt & Parker estate agent will know that after playgroup isn’t the best time to chat. Understanding your schedule is just one advantage of having your own dedicated agent. That means when you buy or sell your home with us, the person you see at the first meeting will see you all the way through to completion. So if you’d like a more personal and professional service, we’d love to chat.
We highly value your feedback: fulham@residentsjournal.co.uk or 020 7987 4320
