Last Drop Wines

Do you find yourself with too much wine and not enough time? Let Last Drop Wines do the hard work for you One out of every seven bottles of wine exported from around the world ends up in the UK. We are very fortunate to have incredible variety but the choice can be daunting. You know your Sauvignons and Malbecs but there are so many other grape varieties and styles to tantalise your palate. With the doom and gloom of Brexit, the time is ripe for exploring other wines – there is a silver lining to every cloud, even the stormy ones.

Step up to the plate We all know little ones can be the fussiest of eaters, so trying to come up with new and nutritious meal ideas can be quite a challenge. Thankfully, Piccolo Plates, a food home delivery service specifically for kids, is here to solve the problem. Created by Eleanor Sampson, who was born and raised in Fulham, and Arabella Arkwright, Piccolo Plates offers a whole menu of delicious, healthy meals. Including fish pie, cod and salmon goujons, cottage pie and chicken and pesto nuggets, each dish is made using local, seasonal ingredients. If your little one still isn’t satisfied, the team will happily tailor each order to you and your family. Each dish costs £5 and serves two children, piccoloplates.com

The Journal heads to the King’s Road to find out why a little bit of everything satisfies the hungriest of stomachs FRANCESCA LEE-ROGERS

The bitterness of the lemon cuts through the salt and satisfies my sweet and sour tooth

I

f I had to describe my preferred dining style, I’d have to admit, I’m a big snacker. For me, a three-course meal can sometimes be somewhat overwhelming. I much prefer a tasting menu where I can eat little and often, or tapas and dim sum where I can nibble away at a leisurely pace as dishes randomly arrive at the table. Luckily for me, Kurobuta fits the bill perfectly. Originally a pop-up on the King’s Road, it was such a success that it’s now a permanent fixture, as is the Kurobuta Marble Arch eatery. Taking its inspiration from the izakayas (informal gastropubs) of Japan, both have slightly different, but no less extensive menus to choose from. With Scott Hallsworth (ex Nobu) at the helm, he creates Japanese classics, some of which have a western twist.

8

Located on the King’s Road, Kurobuta is always packed whenever I stroll pass, and with its laid-back vibe, it’s no surprise that it’s bustling. The casual setting is somewhat refreshing, given that there are a lot of fine dining restaurants in the area. I’d certainly pick it over the others though, especially on a Friday night. To start, a snack of flamed Edamame

with Kizami Wasabi Salsa and Yuzu-Soy, which presented perfectly, looks almost too good to eat. The soy adds a tang while the wasabi gives a kick. The star of the show though has to be the Wagu Beef Sliders. The steamed buns are super soft, the beef melts in the mouth and the onions and cucumber provide the ultimate crunch. If I had a plate of these every day, I’d be one happy lady. A glass of red is the perfect accompaniment too, especially in the depths of autumn. Unfortunately I’m too full for dessert, but rest assured I’ll return to Kurobuta; not just for pudding but for one of its well-known cocktails too. 312 King’s Road, SW3 5UH, 020 7920 6442, kurobuta-london.com

Need for

tweed The Journal spends the afternoon with fashion designer and Fulham resident Catriona Hanly to find out more about her new collection emily adams

C

atriona Hanly’s mind is on a thousand different things when I meet her at her home in Fulham. She’s mentally drawing out designs for her next collection, she’s showing me her current clothing line, and she’s telling me all about her hectic lifestyle that’s taken her across the globe – I can’t keep up. In front of me, she’s laid out her own designs of exquisite feathered hats, chunky but sophisticated jewellery and rails filled with her colourfully quirky autumn/winter range. It’s not your average high street collection; it focuses heavily on tweed with a hint of velvet, and having met Catriona, I can safely say that her designs match her personality exactly: they’re bright, bold, and full of character. She tells me that her use of tweed comes from her background working in hotel interiors. When her property developer father was looking for someone to redesign his hotel, Lough Rynn Castle, Catriona made sure she was the only designer he considered. “I lived and breathed tweed in the hotel and I thought it needed a makeover.” She worked in the interiors business for four years, then moved to Kuala Lumpur, followed by Paris, back to Ireland and then she finally settled in Fulham where she took her next step into fashion.

12

Since then, she’s won Jewellery Designer of the Year, she sells her jewellery in more than 350 boutiques, and you may have spotted her pieces at Ascot, or being worn by model Vogue Williams, actress Madison McKinley and TV presenter Amanda Byram, to name a few. She creates bespoke pieces for clients too. “I love giving a one-to-one, personal service. You really get to know what they want and you engage with them. You create a special piece for them.” I’m scanning the rails of clothes in Catriona’s living room and am surprised by the variation in styles. “It’s all

[LIFESTYLE] completely different, I go into different moods,” she tells me, but for her next season, she’s got bold plans to stick with the tweed, but to also add more velvet. “Buy a tweed jacket or tweed coat, and you have it forever, it’s a classic piece,” she explains. “I use a lot of bright fibre colours: pinks, blues, turquoises and yellows,” she tells me as she brings out different pieces from the collection. “I’ve used herringbone as well as plain tweed and also silk velvet, which makes it more luxurious.” Catriona constantly flits from one thought to the next, talking rapidly then stopping mid-sentence and changing direction. I can see that new designs and ideas are forming. “I am so unorganised,” she admits. “I have a million and one things in my head. I should be designing right now,” she confesses. “While we’ve been talking, I’ve actually been coming up with an idea for some trousers.” She laughs but I can tell she’s itching to put it on paper. “I’m going so fast and I’m doing so much,” she adds, switching direction again and getting up to show me more of her work. What’s the average day like for someone so busy? “Anything could happen,” she sighs. “I could be on the phone organising events, speaking to buyers, to retailers, making sure the collection is doing okay or looking for new shops. There are so many things I could be doing.” And now she’s conquered interiors, fashion and jewellery, does she have plans to diversify into something else? “Of course I do,” she laughs. “I want to move into lifestyle and I want to hit the mass market.” Taking things slowly isn’t a concept Catriona seems familiar with, and just one hour with her has almost tired me out; I’m amazed at her constant energy. Now she’s got to

pick out some fabrics for another collection and tomorrow she’s flying to Ireland for a fashion show, and before I even get to ask her how she manages it all, her next client is knocking at the door. On 17 November, Catriona Hanly is hosting a private party at her home in Parsons Green to showcase her collection. Email info@catrionahanly.com for more information, catrionahanly.com

In our osteopathic practice we see parents with young children, nurses, builders and gardeners who have sustained injuries due to lifting and carrying. Lifting places considerable strain on the lower back so it is better to lift loads that are at the height of your waist than from the floor. It is advisable to utilise ergonomic lifting techniques: • Adopt a diagonal foot position so that you are more agile • Get as close to the load as possible and get a good grip of the object • Bend your knees and avoid pivoting from your back or hips • Hold your tummy in and lift your pelvic floor muscles • Keep the load as close to the body’s centre of gravity as possible when standing up • Breathe out as you lift Always think about your limitations and if appropriate ask for help. Keep your spine strong by taking regular exercise; try our Pilates and yoga classes to improve your spinal health. Visit us for an informal chat if you sustain an injury for advice and treatment.

The Hair Necessities The Journal pops in to the Jimmy Campbell salon in Parsons Green for an afternoon of rest and relaxation EMILY ADAMS

B

efore visiting the Parsons Green Jimmy Campbell salon, I’ve already heard a lot about the man himself and his charming personality. With endless five star reviews online I have high hopes indeed. The salon itself is hard to miss – its hot pink exterior standing out on Parsons Green Lane. The salon, although compact is well laid out and decorated with a wash of sophisticated grey and complemented with another pop of deep pink, a nod to Jimmy’s fun and colourful character.

beauty The Beauty Room, below the salon, is run by Ellie Gibbs, an extremely experienced beautician who offers absolutely everything you can imagine from nonsurgical facelifts and microdermabrasion to eyelash extensions, electrolysis, body scrubs, massages and manicures. Ellie gives me a selection of treatments to show me what the salon does best. She starts with a deep tissue massage, gently working out the knots in my back, before giving me the salon’s popular Indian head

massage so calming that it threatens to put me to sleep. Aware of my sensitive skin, she finishes by giving me a soothing facial.

hair Having been covered in oil during my head massage, my hair now resembles a misshapen hay bale and along with my new relaxed and slightly dazed state, I’m looking fairly dishevelled. Before I can scare any customers, I’m whisked away to have my hair washed. Another brief head massage during the washing process has me so thoroughly relaxed, I wonder how I’ll keep my eyes open through the haircut. Thankfully Jimmy has such a warm personality that he’s a joy to talk to. As I come back in, he’s saying goodbye to his last customer, a gentleman looking very pleased with his new look. Before

Jimmy has such a warm personality that he’s a joy to talk to

he leaves, and much to my amusement, he gets out his phone and asks to have a photo with Jimmy, his hair saviour. He’s also laughing and joking with another customer who I soon find out is his mother-in-law, but the welcoming family feeling doesn’t stop there. Jimmy tells me that it was thanks to his aunts that he was able to set up his first salon at the age of 19, to whom he is very grateful. Before he starts cutting my hair, I can tell something is wrong. Jimmy is genuinely disappointed that my last haircut wasn’t up to scratch. Like working on someone else’s unfinished masterpiece, he says my hair has been cut away at the wrong place leaving it in a bad shape. He tidies up my locks and blow dries it beautifully but I can tell he’s still not happy. He implores me to come back and let him sort it out – Jimmy is only satisfied with the best, and knowing the level of care and attention I have received this afternoon, it’d be my pleasure to return. 32 Parsons Green Lane, SW6 4HS, 020 7610 9321, jimmycampbell.co.uk

Echo can be easily integrated into daily life, with trigger words such as ‘goodnight’ to automatically dim the lights, lock the front door and set the thermostat to a comfortable temperature. It could also enhance your home entertainment by allowing you to play multi-room music, TV shows and films just by speaking. More advanced home automation systems such as Crestron and Control4, have recently launched support for Amazon Echo, making the smart home dream one step closer. e don’t know about you, but the living room is where we spend most of the Christmas holidays, opening presents under the tree, watching reruns of The Snowman on the TV, and nursing glasses of mulled wine in front of an open fire. With that in mind, it should be the cosiest, most inviting place in the house – here’s how we’re doing it.

10 Years of Talisman As interiors company Talisman celebrates 10 years on New King’s Road, the Journal speaks to founder Ken Bolan about the secrets to its success

How did you get into the world of interiors? I have always been interested in the visual arts and it was a natural movement from buying antiques and art to advising people on their homes.

Ke nB

olan

How would you sum up Talisman’s style? Talisman has always been known for its eclectic look. I personally have an appreciation of a very wide field raging from Ancient Greek to the late 20th century – I live comfortably with all periods and I always look for quality and objects that are unusual.

Your showroom is such a vibrant and interesting place – how do you choose what to stock? I always tend to introduce objects that are being rediscovered in a fashionable way – Talisman has always been ahead of the curve.

Talisman showroom

Why did you choose New King’s Road 10 years ago? The first reason for setting up here was the building itself: I had known it for many years and when it came up for sale in 2005 I decided to base Talisman there. It’s a wonderful space and I am proud to have saved the building as it was due for demolition. The local area is very civilised – it’s a great place to live with

Parsons Green and the river so close.

How have you seen interior design change over time? I have seen constant change in fashions – people used to collect particular periods of English furniture. During the early 80s, French and Italian furniture was popular and in the mid-80s I started buying beautiful Swedish Gustavian furniture. We saw a move to minimalism in the 90s and a trend towards the industrial. All of these styles seem to sit together happily these days, including mid to late 20th design.

Cabinet circa 1965 (below) that has been reinterpreted to become a Talisman Edition.

What’s been the secret to your success in Fulham over the last 10 years? We’ve always kept the quality of our stock at a high level and give good value for money. That and the backing of enthusiastic staff who are very knowledgeable. 79-91 New King’s Road, SW6 4SQ, 020 7731 4686, talismanlondon.com

Do you have a current favourite piece in the showroom? One of my favourites is an Olive Lacquered Mastercraft

sHIP SHAPE Step inside some of the world’s most luxurious yachts, designed by Bannenberg & Rowell in SW6 lorraine crighton-smith

“W

e’ve had oligarchs in Maybachs and Phantoms ram up on the pavement and park outside,” says Dickie Bannenberg, one half of Fulham-based yacht designers Bannenberg & Rowell. Seeing super yachts pull up outside the shop front of the 1920s studio on Wandsworth Bridge Road might not be the most familiar of sights, but such is the fame of the design firm that it attracts some of the wealthiest people in the world. Inside the studio, creative director Simon Rowell, together with company leader Dickie, talks me through the process of designing luxury yachts. This is taking high-end interior (and exterior) design to a whole new level. One of the biggest challenges interior yacht designers face, when compared to a residential design project, is space

22

and weight limitations. “Occasionally we work on a highperformance yacht, which is high speed, so there is a very technical focus on lightweight construction,” says Dickie. “It comes down to the way you detail the edges,” says Simon, who also reveals that the gap between the cost of yacht interior design and residential interior design is closing. “High-end residential is now using some of the same fit-out people [as Bannenberg & Rowell], because it’s so perfectly engineered from an interior point of view,” he says. One can expect fewer surprises when kitting out a yacht compared to a property renovation on land. “The interiors are largely prefabricated, sampled and controlled before they go on the ship,” says Simon, “so that means

it’s a much more engineered process, and it’s much more solid. Suffice to say it’s pretty much the highest end interior fit out there, other than perhaps jets.” Aircraft and residential projects are other strings to Bannenberg & Rowell’s bow and the 12-strong team is currently working on “quite a wide variety: nine or 10 projects – 80 per cent of which are yachting,” says Dickie. Two of these projects are working with Dutch shipyard Heesen Yachts to design

[LIFESTYLE] yachts that are yet to be sold. “It’s a leap of faith and finance for the yard,” he reveals, but it has worked for the shipyard in the past. One example of this partnership is the Galactica Star, a 65m aluminium superyacht that is so luxurious it’s the charter yacht of choice for Beyoncé and Jay Z on their holidays (who are, reportedly, friends with the yacht’s mysterious owner). Heesen sold the boat “two or three months before completion” and Bannenberg & Rowell

had the rather fun, albeit “fraught” task of dressing the ship with art, from classic Warhol prints to strong black and white photography. “The fraught angle is that you’re trying to put together a package in real time while the art market is constantly shifting, you’re trying to package up 20 or 25 other pieces, and trying to get approval with a big number at the bottom of the spreadsheet... But it was great fun and it made it to the Monaco

Yacht Show that year, all decked out beautifully,” says Simon. “It won best in show – like a horse show – and they put a big rosette on the side,” adds Dickie, whose late father, Jon Bannenberg, is widely regarded as the founder of modern yacht design. “My dad used to say ‘nobody needs a yacht’,” says Dickie, who strives to make the experience of designing one a personal and enjoyable process for all involved. “You’re honour bound to make the experience amazing, memorable and fun. You’ve failed on all fronts if the process goes off the rails or there’s some arguments over aesthetics.” Being close to the river and in an area synonymous with design, Fulham feels a fitting location for Bannenberg & Rowell’s HQ. “Many years ago, in my dad’s time, we were a bit further down the King’s Road, but this works well,” says Dickie who lives locally. So we can expect to see yet more oligarchs and the mega-rich shopping for yachts in SW6 for years to come.

PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT Important plans affecting your area LOUD AND CLEAR Hammersmith & Fulham Council is looking out for its local residents by putting in place measures to protect against construction noise in the area. The Council’s Cabinet has agreed to discuss revised policies to protect residents from disturbance created by nearby developments. As part of the proposed changes, each new project, especially those that involve basement extensions, lightwells and demolitions works, as well as larger construction plans, would need to adhere to stricter policies on noise and vibration. Failure to comply with these policies could result in refused planning permission. Regardless of the size of any future development, each proposal would be assessed for sensitivity to ensure it is appropriate for its location. Some applicants may also be expected to conduct assessments to demonstrate potential noise levels on site. Any work that may result in excessive disturbance will not be permitted. Councillor and Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Regeneration at Hammersmith and Fulham, Andrew Jones says: “This administration is committed to supporting new housing space in the borough, but also ensuring that local residents can get the peace and quiet they deserve. “These robust policies would ensure that there are proper measures in place to protect residents in buildings close to construction sites from excess noise and other disturbances.” Following a public consultation on the matter, new plans could be adopted by the end of 2017. lbhf.gov.uk

Best foot forward Head of residential sales at Carter Jonas’ Parsons Green office, Tom Lewis speaks to the Journal about everything from rebranding to reaching record prices

J

ust over three years ago, in October 2013, Carter Jonas acquired local estate agent Sullivan Thomas, including the Parsons Green office that Tom Lewis and I are sitting in, and now the transition is complete. Today the estate agent, which sits proudly on Fulham Road, is sporting a new purple tiled façade and has been successfully rebranded to join its Bishop’s Park office. Now with 36 offices across the UK, it’s brought its customers a more national presence. “Carter Jonas was perhaps better known outside of London, whereas we are a local south west London estate agent,” and while the company now has a much larger reach, Tom is quick to reassure me that it’s maintaining its connection with the local community. “We still have the same ethos,” he confirms, with the merger serving to strengthen the services it already offers its clients. “Carter Jonas has professional departments covering everything from commercial and rural to planning and development, rather than just pure agency and I think that has been a good addition for us.” While it may have grown from a local agency to a more national one, along with its office in Bishop’s Park, Carter Jonas has got the whole of the Fulham market covered and as Tom tells me, there is a real mixture of stock at the moment, from onebedroom flats to £3-4million houses. “We have a very diverse portfolio of properties which is good as it means whichever price range our clients’ properties are in, we’re always making sales.” He goes on to tell me that their knowledgeable and experienced

team work closely with the Bishop’s Park office, and there is often a natural progression from people with smaller houses in Parsons Green who eventually outgrow them and move on to bigger houses in Bishop’s Park. “We have a lot of deals where we are selling for one party who are buying through our other office. It means that we can help them to make sure the chain runs smoothly.” Looking at the market so far, Tom tells me that for the first time in a while it resembles what you’d expect from a typical autumn market. Despite a whole host of political changes and increase in stamp duty, he adds that buyers have been waiting for such a long time that regardless of what lies ahead, they need to move. “It comes down to families moving because they’ve outgrown their properties for example, and they can’t put that off forever. People are gaining confidence; there are more properties on the market and more people looking.” Tom tells me that the main surprise so far this season is that the most activity has been at the top end of the market, £2.5million and above, as well as houses between £1.2 and 1.6million. In fact, the Carter Jonas Parsons Green office has just sold a property on Clonmel Road for a record price. “It was an unusual house in that it hadn’t been touched for 50 years,” he says. “The buyer saw the potential and liked the fact that they could put their own stamp on it. It was an interesting sale to be involved in.” But it’s not just record sales that the Parsons Green office is involved in. True to Tom’s word, the Parsons Green office is maintaining its local agency roots for the months ahead. “We like to be involved with what’s happening in the schools,” Tom explains, telling me about their involvement in local projects and charity events. The office sponsors the Lady Margaret School’s enterprise scheme, a Dragon’s Den-style competition that encourages children to get creative and come up with their own business plans. Convinced that’s still not enough to keep the team busy, you’ll also find them sponsoring the school’s Christmas fair on 26 November, 11am-3pm. 783 Fulham Road, SW6 5HD, 020 7751 8899, carterjonas.co.uk

With your dedicated Strutt & Parker estate agent, communication won’t be a game of pass the parcel. Not repeating yourself to Tom, Dick or Harry is just one advantage of having your own dedicated agent. That means when you buy or sell your home with us, the person you see at the first meeting will see you all the way through to completion. So if you’d like a more personal and professional service, we’d love to chat.

We highly value your feedback: fulham@residentsjournal.co.uk or 020 7987 4320
