Dear Resident, As the sun begins to shine over Fulham, what better way to soak up the rays than by watching Andy Murray competing on a grass court? We’re not talking about the impending 2014 Wimbledon Championships, however; before the action kicks off in SW19, the tennis season begins in style at The Hurlingham Club, with the return of the BNP Paribas Tennis Classic. The Journal talks to Mark Philippoussis ahead of the tournament; read more on page 14. This month Lauren Romano meets Julian Dyer, the founder of dessert company Pots & Co, as his colourful ramekins of lemon and lime posset and passion fruit and blood orange cheesecake hit the shelves in Waitrose stores nationwide. They talk teapots, the old Jazz on the Green festival and how his pudding empire all began here in Fulham (p.9). In other food news, Lauren also catches up with Scarlett Guess, the owner of Munster Road’s neighbourhood hang-out Poppy’s Place over smashed avocado on toast (p.16). And last but by no means least, residents should clear a space in their diaries for the return of the annual Celebrating Fulham and Fair on the Green, which return this month. Read our round-up of the community focused events on page 6.

Party TIME The summer has finally arrived, and what better way to kick it off than with a local celebration?

I

t’s that time of year again: the smell of barbecues fills the air, the ice cream van does its rounds and sunseekers roll out their picnic rugs in Bishops Park. Amongst all the fun, Celebrating Fulham returns. Organised by Hammersmith & Fulham Council in partnership with the Fulham Society, the nine-day celebration offers a carefullycurated programme of the best local events. The annual festival has been running since 2004 to showcase the best of Fulham’s history and hidden treasures, and to promote small businesses along the way. ‘Celebrating Fulham puts a focus on what’s on our doorstep and encourages people to spend locally,’ town centre manager and organiser Nicki Burgess says, reminding us that, with some 35,000 households in Fulham, it has real potential to boost the local economy. It’s not all about parting with the pennies, however, the line-up of events enables residents of all ages to connect with the community. From an English beer master class at Whole Foods Market and an artists’ open studio event, to an outdoor performance of the Roald Dahl classic, George’s Marvellous Medicine in Fulham Palace’s walled garden and an evening bat walk, there

really is something for everyone. On the cultural agenda, lovers of the Bard’s sonnets and plays should make a note in their diary to attend Shakespeare’s Greatest Hits, taking place at All Saints Church to celebrate his 450th birthday, which will feature readings alongside songs. If a trip down Elizabethan memory lane isn’t your thing, Press Play pop-up film company will be screening Catch Me If You Can on the rooftop at Broadway House. History buffs, meanwhile, can enjoy walks, tours and illustrated talks. At the heart of the festival, Fair on the Green arrives on Saturday 5 July. The everpopular event, organised by members of St Dionis Church, along with residents and business owners, is a true celebration of the community and raises money for numerous charities. The family-friendly day out features hundreds of stalls, a bouncy castle, Punch and Judy shows, carousels, a food court and two stages of live music and entertainment. Summer doesn’t get much better than this; see you there! Celebrating Fulham runs from 28 June to 6 July Fair on the Green takes place on 5 July from 11.30am to 5.30pm. More and more women are benefitting from RHC, a new trusted best friend

T

ime is almost always of the essence and finding solutions to life’s daily needs can be a challenging process. Searching the internet for answers to our questions can inevitably throw up a minefield of conflicting results. The Really Helpful Club (RHC) can always be relied upon to come up with the answers. An online forum for smart, sensible women to share great ideas, helpful tips and trustworthy recommendations, RHC is gaining a foothold in local communities across south-west London and beyond; it has carved its own special niche. RHC enables members to reach beyond their own circle of friends to find tried and tested solutions to all manner of needs from women who share a similar perspective. Sarah Austin, founder and Wimbledon resident, attributes its success to the RHC’s wide-reaching network of contacts. ‘One person simply cannot have the answers to everything,’ she explains. ‘There is nothing worse than wasting time or money. No one has time to make the wrong decision these days, whether they are choosing a reliable caterer for a special event, a trusted dog-walker or finding a family-friendly holiday location – we all feel most comfortable making our choices based on word of mouth recommendations. RHC is all about helping one another and making our lives easier.’ The Residents’ Journal heartily agrees. Sarah adds, ‘my favourite topic was recently posted by a member who found a black Labrador puppy via a recommendation from another RHC member.’ The comment left by a delighted member speaks volumes: ‘We collect our gorgeous new pup on 8 June…excited would be a massive understatement! THANK you to Really Helpful Club – couldn’t/wouldn’t have happened without your site!’

to read, highlights a fact that RHC’s members know only too well: positive, personal recommendations are the best way to spread the word and garner trust and reassurance. RECONNECTING WOMEN WITH THE WORKPLACE The Really Helpful Club also offers a unique way of connecting women via networking opportunities. Women may have launched a business and want to reach out to a wider community or they might also be looking for a career change or to rediscover the workplace once their children have started school or flown the nest. The RHC facilitates this with a selection of roles placed by employers looking to recruit like-minded local women. Recently, one member posted a role in her south-west London based company and the topic rapidly generated significant interest, after being viewed by more than 500 members. The employer went on to hire not one but two Really Helpful Club members. GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY The Really Helpful Club is also about giving back to the community. The new charities section enables good causes to spread the word about the vital and tireless work they do. By connecting with members at a personal level, Sarah is keen to stress that collectively a real difference can be made. Don’t miss out; join today!

SHARING THE BEST IDEAS WITH OTHER LIKEMINDED WOMEN The power of the network and its effectiveness is evident in the number of testimonials left by its members. One such example speaks for itself: ‘A couple of months ago, I asked if anyone could recommend a private chef who could cook in our home for a special dinner party we were hosting. Thanks to this post, I came across the perfect chef. She was absolutely amazing and provided us with the most delicious three-course meal, plus canapés. She then went on to recommend a waiter who looked after us incredibly well throughout the evening and even cleaned up the kitchen before silently slipping out the door. It was quite literally effortless entertaining – restaurant quality food, but in the comfort of our own home.’ The post, left for all

When I met Julian he confirmed that Pots & Co will now be stocked in all 280 Waitrose stores, something that he is understandably elated about. The pots will always form an integral part of the product for Julian. ‘They are an infinitely better alternative to a pudding in a foil container that you have to tip out,’ he tells me. He has spend countless hours perfecting the pastel-toned ramekins over the years; from experimenting with different types of clay to tracking down a family-run potters in Valencia to meet his needs. ‘The pots are what make the puddings,’ he assures. ‘They are such an even distributor of heat; our products wouldn’t be the same without them. The wheels are in motions to increase production from 40,000 to 100,000 puddings a week over the year ahead. But despite the meteoric rise of his baked custards and crumbles, Julian has his feet placed firmly on the ground. ‘I’ve lived in Parsons Green since 1988, my children attend Lady Margaret School and All Saints. I love the real sense of community which exists here. When I was doing catering for high-profile film events (the highlight included cooking for Sylvester Stallone, he reveals) I’d bump into contacts in Dickinson butchers on North End Road. My wife has just taken over a catering business and she also enjoys the local network we have here.’ Julian attributes much of Pots & Co’s success to its resourcefulness and the vision of the chefs he works with. ‘They are Michelin-trained and love to create. We aren’t pigeon-holed like other dessert companies. We make crumbles,

cheesecakes, set creams – the whole spectrum of sweet treats, and we use the very best ingredients and methods.’ It’s obviously paying off as there is talk of a collaboration with a well-known restaurant chain and an airline too, as well as another possible supermarket launch, which Julian plays down. ‘If an arrangement works we go with it; I don’t want us to get ahead of ourselves.’ As our meeting draws to a close I ask Julian if he is looking forward to this year’s summer celebrations in Fulham. He recalls the Jazz on the Green festival back in 1999 when the founders of Innocent smoothies had a stall. ‘I was on my way home from a stag do and I saw these guys standing at a trestle table. They had rows of smoothies lined up and then two bins for the empties. One bin had a label saying “Don’t give up the day job” and the other was entitled “Start a company”. Not one empty bottle found its way into the “Don’t give up the day job” bin. To think that it all started here,’ he laughs. As for what the future holds for Pots & Co, Julian is looking forward, but not without the occasional glance back to how far the company has come. ‘I went to quite a prestigious boarding school and I did ceramics at A-Level,’ he tells me. ‘Every time we had guests around to my parents’ house, my father would pick up a teapot that I had made and sigh, gesturing to it. “£55,000, that’s how much this teapot cost me.” It was a running family joke. If only he knew what I was doing now.’ (potsandco.com)

Making

memories

Thanks to the smartphone, anyone can be an around-the-clock David Bailey. But what do you do with the archive of photos stored on your SIM card? Enterprising resident Harriet Inglis has a solution

A

n epidemic is gripping SW6 and beyond: we are a community of happy-snappers. Seizing the “say cheese” moment on camera at any given opportunity, we capture our children’s first steps, first tooth and the first time they slurp spaghetti with such abandon we could give a seasoned paparazzo a run for his money. Parents, it seems, are particularly guilty culprits. Gone are the days when dad took charge of the camera – stashed in a bulky bag filled with extra film and batteries – on day trips to the zoo for carefully staged photos. These were then developed and duly bound in an album to be whipped out at any family occasion. Today, our pictures of precious moments are holed up on our computer hard-drives and left clogging up memory cards. We have so many photos but nothing in the form of the organised albums that we used to place such importance on. This is where Harriet Inglis comes in. An affable and energetic local mother of four, she knows all too well that organising photos from last month’s barbecue (let alone pictures from the Christmas nativity play or snaps from that holiday to Greece three years’ ago), is a chore. Thankfully, it’s one that she is willing to take on.

Harriet will come to your house, collect all your photos from the plethora of storage places they currently reside (camera, phone, computer), transfer them all on to a memory stick and head home to sift through the lot. While it might seem like an intrusion of privacy to hand over your photos to a complete stranger, I challenge anybody to spend ten minutes with Harriet and not implicitly trust her. What’s more, no job is too big or small. ‘My most recent client had 10,000 photos in digital form,’ Harriet smiles. ‘It’s easy to amass so many pictures that you simply don’t know where to begin.’ Harriet will patiently sort through and put them in some kind of chronological order. Next, she will select the best photos and print them before presenting her carefully curated selection in a series of beautiful albums. ‘As a mother I know from instinct and experience which images will have the most sentimental value,’ she assures. Harriet also offers a storage service, and can keep back-up files of your photo archive on disc or memory stick secure in her safe. ‘One woman was actually reduced to tears when I handed over her albums; she hadn’t seen her wedding photos for years because nobody prints pictures anymore,’ Harriet reveals. It is this positive response that makes the task so rewarding and worthwhile. ‘It is a privilege to be allowed access to a family’s most precious memories, to build a story of their life thus far, and to document the many special moments that punctuate it. I can’t wait to complete my next project.’ Harriet can tailor packages to suit your needs and budget. Contact her for more information on photography@britanniaroad.com

Game, set, match The tennis season begins in style at The Hurlingham Club this month with the BNP Paribas Tennis Classic

T

he strawberries and cream might be on stand-by down the road at Wimbledon, but before Andy Murray and co. don their whites and rally it out on the famous grass courts, they warm-up at the Hurlingham Club’s very own tournament: the BNP Paribas Tennis Classic. As well as showcasing world-class players from the ATP and WTA Tours, a number of tennis legends will be taking to the court. Mark Philippoussis is among those warming up; he speaks to the Fulham Residents’ Journal ahead of the event... What is it about the BNP Paribas Tennis Classic that gives it such enduring appeal? It is a combination of the most beautiful and intimate setting in the heart of London, as well as watching world-class tennis players. It’s like an exclusive summer party: great atmosphere, great hospitality and great entertainment. How many times have you taken part and what particular memories stand out from

previous years? I honestly can’t say for sure, but it feels like I have been playing at The Hurlingham Club for 10 years. Even when I was still on the tour, I would play my practice matches and train here before Wimbledon. Every time I play, what stands out for me is the crowd and the people involved – the energy is incredibly positive. What do you enjoy most about the tournament? I love playing against my old rivals. We have such a good time at the Hurlingham – you really can’t beat it. After we play our matches we get to mingle with the guests, relax in the beautiful setting and have a good catch up. As a former ATP Tour player, why do you think the BNP Paribas Tennis Classic is popular with players warming up for Wimbledon? It’s important to get as much grass court practice as possible in the run-up to Wimbledon. Andy Murray played here last year and it worked for him! And he’s back this year to warm up again. Last year, Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova and Jo-Wilfried

- 14 -

Tsonga were also at the event getting in last minute vital grass court preparation. Do you know who you will be partnered with for your doubles matches this year? Is there anyone in particular that you are looking forward to facing? I know that I’ll be playing a doubles match with Mansour Bahrami and Goran Ivanisevic. We don’t take it too seriously. Mansour is always having fun on the court, which makes it entertaining for the crowd and for us too. He’s an amazing trick shot player. What is the crowd atmosphere like? It is fun and laid back. Everyone is there to have a good time, drink Champagne and watch tennis. The stadium is intimate, so it feels like the crowd is almost on the court with you! Is there a sense of camaraderie between the players? Absolutely. We’ve all become good friends and are here to have a good time. What was the defining moment of your tennis career? Reaching the Wimbledon finals in 2003 and the US Open final in 1998 was huge, but winning the Davis Cup twice for my country in 1999 and 2003 was something very special. Aside from BNP Paribas, do you take part in any other tennis tournaments? I play in a number of events around the world. I will in fact be going to Edinburgh following this tournament, to participate in the ATP Champions Tour event up there. What are your Wimbledon predictions for this year? I’m calling Federer to win. BNP Paribas Tennis Classic runs from 17-20 June at The Hurlingham Club Ranelagh Gardens SW6 3PR. Packages available from £150 per person, visit bnpparibastennisclassic.com for more details - 15 -

POPPY’S

Place

Munster Road’s neighbourhood restaurant has settled in nicely. Lauren Romano meets owner Scarlett Guess over smashed avocado on toast

T

he Poppy whose place has arrived on Munster Road is also known as Scarlett Guess. Scarlett comes from a restaurant dynasty; her brother Will co-founded Haymarket’s Chop Shop, while her family restaurant Rowley’s on Jermyn Street is something of a St James’s stalwart and where she first learned the business of running a restaurant. But Poppy’s Place is her venturing out alone. ‘I ran Rowley’s for five years, which taught me the background of running a business, but I was ready to do something by myself,’ she tells me over an apple, lemon and ginger juice on the small patio outside her glass-fronted premises. But why Munster Road, I want to know. ‘Everybody always asks me that,’ she smiles. ‘The truth is, I looked at numerous sites before settling on this one. I nearly put in an offer on somewhere in central London, but I realised I wouldn’t actually be proving anything by opening another coffee shop in Soho.’ When Scarlett stumbled across the corner plot, she was immediately struck by the community feel of the surrounding Munster Village. ‘I didn’t have a concept in mind until I had viewed the space and then the idea just evolved naturally. I knew that I wanted to create a laid-back, local hangout, one where people could nurse a coffee as they tapped away on their laptops, or have a catch-up with friends with their children in tow.’ Since opening in March, the restaurant has undergone something of a transformation from Indian takeaway to light-filled hub, complete with novel touches. From mismatched furniture to the vintage cabinet used to display the bright crockery and mountains of brownies and cupcakes, it is warm and inviting.

Come evening, when daylight dwindles, the restaurant glows softly by candlelight as jazz music plays. The menu I am presented with has been devised by Scarlett and her head chef and business partner Alistair Prichard to match the laid-back feel. Casual all day dining at Poppy’s comes in the form of seasonal breakfasts and brunches of hot smoked salmon and horseradish crème fraîche, or unlimited slabs of toast-your-own sourdough bread, and lunches of toasties, salads and other delights from the everchanging specials board. The steak knives are sharpened in the evening when simple grills and unlimited French fries and salad form the backbone of the dinner menu. ‘The smashed avocado on toast with poached eggs is our best seller; we go through hundreds of avocados,’ Scarlett reveals, approving of my breakfast choice.

The smashed avocado on toast with poached eggs is our best seller; we go through hundreds of avocados As I tuck in, she talks animatedly about her future plans for the restaurant. ‘My family has a farm in Suffolk. Last time I was home, I brought back lots of rhubarb that Alistair turned into a crumble. My mum makes amazing soups and ice creams from all of the fresh produce, so it would be great to offer them here in the near future.’ Scarlett is also keen to push a takeaway service too, and hopes to do the rounds of local offices with the menu soon. The last few months have undoubtedly been a long toil but the hard work has paid off. ‘There are days when I’m here from 7am until midnight, and that can be tiring, but I have the most amazing people around me. What’s more, I love the fact that the local community and my regulars are gunning for Poppy’s to succeed, so I wouldn’t have it any other way.’ 255 Munster Road, SW6 6BW, 020 7920 6420 (poppysplacesw6.co.uk)

The

Fashion detox

Shopaholic Lauren Romano sends out a fashion SOS to stylist and personal shopper Caroline Jouning, and in return, learns how to construct the perfect capsule wardrobe

W

hen it comes to wardrobe organisation, I can only dream of channelling Alicia Silverstone and her meticulously catergorised closet in Clueless, complete with the special computer program that helped her select the perfect outfit. In reality, thanks to the sorry state of affairs that is my wardrobe (work and weekend outfits strewn across the shelves, three outfits to a hanger and a graveyard of bobbly old T-shirts), I just dive in and hope for the best. What my wardrobe needs is a detox; and Fulham stylist and personal shopper Caroline Jouning is the woman for the job. Having worked at fashion bibleVogue and other Condé Nast titles for 15 years, Caroline knows what she is talking about. She knows where to buy your jeans if you want to disguise your baby weight, or what brands to avoid if you are on the petite side. She can mix designer and high street labels without leaving you looking like a footballer’s wife, and, most importantly, she can create a style overhaul that works for you. ‘My job is all about matching the person with the clothes; I never shoehorn my clients into

trends that don’t work for them or their lifestyle. Fashions come and go, but style stands the test of time,’ she assures me over a cup of tea in her Fulham sitting room. I can’t help but warm to Caroline. Fashion can be perceived as an unfriendly industry, but Caroline is an approachable mediator between the haute couture catwalk offerings and the school run outfit. Whether you are looking to update your wardrobe, or you want to get unstuck from the sartorial rut you have found yourself in, navigating the constant stream of new styles can be confusing and time consuming, and this is where Caroline steps in. ‘The trick is to translate the trends into real life, for real women,’ she says. Show her your wardrobe and she will tell you where you are going wrong and advise you on how best to de-clutter or fill in the missing gaps to create a tailor-made, capsule collection that suits your day-to-day agenda, whether you are battling boardrooms or buggies. After the initial consultation is complete, with a new, slim-trim wardrobe to show for it, Caroline schedules a shopping trip to find new outfits to complete and complement what you already have. ‘I’m

A REAL

Fulham Residents’ Journal meets Gee Woods, the jewellery designer who is breathing life back into the old gems lingering in our jewellery boxes Does jewellery go in and out of fashion? What trends are you noticing at the moment? In a word, yes. I think classic pieces are always going to be popular, but I’ve noticed that more and more people want something individual and personal to them. Rose gold is very much on-trend as people are starting to notice that it’s a flattering colour for pale skin tones.

My ready-to-wear collection is simple, fun and geometric How would you describe the Gee Woods style? My ready-to-wear collection is simple, fun and geometric. I absolutely adore working in yellow gold, using clean looking setting styles and lesser known gemstones. I’m a great believer that the simpler, the better! One of your specialisms involves adapting and modernising vintage jewellery – is this becoming more sought-after? People are realising that there’s no point having an old brooch in the safe that’s never been worn. In some cases the whole piece of jewellery needs to be re-worked but, where possible, I always try to keep as much of the

original to preserve its sentimental value. After the initial client consultation, I draft some rough sketches and go back and forth with them until they are happy. Afterwards, I do some more detailed drawings. These are, again, relayed back to the customer. This is a process that can’t be rushed as it’s essential to make sure every detail is precise before the piece is made. Where is your jewellery made? All of my jewellery is made by small independent workshops around London. I work with suppliers I know incredibly well and trust implicitly. Each workshop is the best in its field, so when a piece moves from a mounter to a setter, and finally to a polisher, it’s a very rewarding process. Why do you love designing jewellery? I love looking at how a piece is put together, how tactile it is and how it can make you feel. Great jewellery is like good underwear – it instantly lifts your mood and makes you feel fantastic. Gee Woods specialises in ready-to-wear items through to one-of-a-kind pieces, which range from £95 to £2,500. Bespoke items start at approximately £500 (geewoods.com) - 21 -

Silver service

Annabel Harrison meets British designer Phillipa Lepley, as her south-west based company celebrates its 25th anniversary, to find out more about the intricate work required to create wedding dresses

- 22 -

‘I

don’t want a strapless dress. I’m open-minded about everything else but I really don’t think I want a strapless dress.’ My famous last words; Phillipa Lepley had asked if I had any preconceptions about my wedding dress on our way to her store and, after trying on dozens of gorgeous gowns, my favourite three are, in fact, all strapless. I thank her for overturning the only thing I thought I’d insist on and Phillipa smiles, explaining that one of the most important things is to listen carefully to a bride’s wishes but to ensure she doesn’t rule out the perfect dress based on these preconceived ideas about what might suit her. A wedding dress is not, I quickly learn, anything like normal long dresses, which I have disliked over the years, and I’m so glad I listened to Phillipa. After 25 years in the industry, she certainly knows what she’s talking about. ‘Celebrating this anniversary is amazing and I feel lucky to be still doing what I love,’ Phillipa says with enthusiasm that doesn’t seem to waver, even though she must have dressed thousands and thousands of brides over the decades. She speaks during our conversation as I imagine she works; neatly, quickly and concisely. ‘I love being able to create more and more beautiful, special, bespoke frocks, helped by my amazing, long-standing team of “petit mains”. We have come a long way and can enjoy a wonderful work space and perfectly placed shop.’ A long way is metaphorical, as distance-wise, Phillipa arrived in Chelsea six years ago from Fulham and her team works in a studio just a few minutes away, but further expansion is not on the cards. ‘I like the business the size it is, and focussing on quality, not quantity; I’m very hands-on, so too many things push the boundaries.’ Hands-on is definitely the right expression for Phillipa’s modus operandi; she is involved in every aspect of the business, and high expectations, of herself and those around her, have undoubtedly contributed to her success. I’m shown around her studio and every piece of fabric, every bead and

every drawer, not to mention the dresses, is neatly labelled and light streams over the tidy work stations. There is no hint of chaos; the atmosphere is calm and the staff focussed. ‘Precision and experience in all roles sets us apart, and the very high standards of my production managers are an enormous help. Seamstresses, fitters and cutters all need years of experience to attain the levels we require. Pretty much every element is completed in London; some beading is sent away, but most of our embellishment happens in our embellishment department.’ Brides-to-be can expect to spend anything from £2,000 up to a five-figure sum for a bespoke couture creation, which can take thousands of man-hours to complete. Following a consultation, or more than one if required, with the expert

After 25 years in the industry, Phillipa certainly knows what she’s talking about vendeuse, Phillipa explains, you select the style, detail and fabric of your dress and place your order. ‘The next appointment allows a technician to take all measurements as well as a visual rendition of your posture; from this information, the pattern cutter will create a paper pattern, from which a calico toile will be made. This is a

mock-up of your dress and it will be fitted to your body to ascertain the most accurate fit and proportion. The paper pattern will be perfected to incorporate any adjustments made in the toile fitting before the silk fabric is cut. More than one toile fitting is often needed to achieve the precise level of fit required. Depending on the style and fabrics selected, you will require up to six dress fittings, to ensure the highest possible standard of fit and perfection. The final check fitting will be held as close to your wedding date as possible.’ The dedication to detail within the creation and composition of these dresses is astounding and I can vouch for it, having examined them at length and up close. I am getting married next May so I spend a couple of delightful hours in the boutique with Phillipa, trying on wedding dresses for the first time. It’s a joy and I feel like a princess, relaxed, happy and generally delighted during the experience. It may sound hyperbolic but I had been slightly nervous about a first fitting, fearing that I might not find something I loved, but I need not have worried. Baby Olivia turns out to be my favourite style, named after a former client, and I revel in the quality of fabrics Phillipa

I fall in love with a dotted cotton dress and an elaborately embroidered and feathered creation uses; in addition to organza and lace, which I expected to like, I fall in love with a dotted cotton dress and an elaborately embroidered and feathered creation, as well as wafting around in a number of veils. Phillipa seems just as happy as I am and I think there’s probably a diamond career anniversary still to come; ‘I really can’t imagine what I’d do with my time without all this. I still get “the tingle moment” when working alongside a bride and hitting on

exactly the right look. I love that,’ she says. The current anniversary is being commemorated with a beautiful silver dress named the Phillipa. ‘I wanted to create something with hours and hours of love and work in it that showed the world what we are all about. My team have laboured for hours on this hand-beaded wonder. It is a stunning, feminine dress with a lot of fine detail; a special piece to be remembered.’ This phrase could be attributed to all of Phillipa’s dresses though. She points out that despite the fact that weddings are becoming more and more diverse, and ‘everyone is generally open to looking at different designs, people don’t want anything too period-y and like the classic look... We meet such a broad spectrum of brides from all over the world that there

honestly is no real trend apart from the colour ivory!’ Phillipa pauses to consider my next question, as to what’s the biggest mistake a bride can make. ‘Marry the wrong man?!’ I’d been talking about the dress, but this is also a good point! Our final words revolve around this wonderful swathe of London. Phillipa lives in Wandsworth; its proximity to the Chelsea store and Fulham studio makes juggling family life and her job easier. ‘I love the greenery and its fabulous village-y feel; there are lovely local shops and a friendly, low-key, family feeling. Everything is handy and easy. It’s happening; it has an innovative, young and cosmopolitan feel. I feel very at home and I just love the balance. It’s gentle and un-flash. I wouldn’t swap my shop position for anywhere else in London. I call it “my window to the world”. That’s the great thing about having a shop – you just never know who will walk in next.’ If you’re in the market for a one-of-a-kind wedding dress that will make you feel like a million dollars on that unforgettable day, it’s worth paying Phillipa a visit. FULL THROTTLE

The Journal investigates the adrenaline rush that is the Ginetta Junior Championship

S

ince 1958, Ginetta has been crafting some of the best and most iconic road and race cars out there. Now one of the few remaining British manufacturers in the business, since its purchase by Lawrence Tomlinson in 2005 the company has produced around 200 hand-crafted cars a year, delivered to customers across the globe. However, the company’s focus is not solely on the big leagues; its Ginetta Junior Championship (a support race to the British Touring Car Championship [BTCC] since 2008) is a big hit with younger drivers looking to make their mark, and takes place over 10 weekends between March and October. Open to racing prodigies aged 14 to 17 – many of whom are not yet old enough to drive on British roads – the junior championship is one of the most subscribed, most well-attended, most televised and most prestigious of its kind. Drivers in the Junior Championship cut their racing teeth in a specially-designed G40, which boasts a sealed Ford Zetec 1.8-litre engine restricted to 100 BHP (break horsepower), as well as an integral roll cage and fibreglass shell for safety. On top of this, the chassis on this bespoke vehicle is 53 times stronger than the required FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) standards. These safety measures put Ginetta at the top of its field for encouraging young

talent in a safe environment. Charlie Kemp, commercial director of HHC Motorsport, a Ginetta Junior Championship team, said: ‘Ginetta Juniors is the perfect way for aspiring drivers to start a career in motorsport, it allows them to not only learn the key driving dynamics of a race car in the most competitive junior environment in Europe, but also sees them learning how to conduct themselves in all aspects of professional motorsport. Whether they go on to be a professional driver, driver coach, data engineer,

Drivers in the Junior Championship cut their racing teeth in a specially-designed G40 team manager or any other role in the professional motorsport world, they will have experience to fall back on from the earliest possible point in their career.’ Although some of the junior drivers opt to branch out into other forms of motorsport, the majority progress to compete in an adult series. There are several drivers who started in the Junior Championship who have gone on to have successful careers; most recently Tom Ingram, who has won three Ginetta titles in four years: Juniors in

2010, G50 Cup in 2011 and Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup in 2013. Following on from these successes, Tom is currently enjoying his maiden BTCC season. Most juniors either join a team or are part of a ‘lad and dad’ partnership with their parents. Ginetta are keen to promote under recognised (and often underfunded) talent and for this reason, they have launched the Ginetta Junior Scholarship, which is designed to assist youngsters in making the transition into sports car racing with a fully-funded season in the Ginetta Junior Championship. ‘It’s the only place in the UK where a driver can go from having no car racing experience, no sponsors and no financial backing, to racing on the most high-profile championship package in Britain with incredible levels of exposure. It is without a doubt a fantastic opportunity,’ a Ginetta spokesperson told the Journal. In order to keep everything as fair as possible, only youngsters with no previous sports car racing experience are eligible to compete for the scholarship. Held annually at the Bedford Autodrome across three days during the autumn half term, the event attracts around 60 entrants each year, who are assessed on a range of talents

including driving ability and car control, as well as fitness and media skills. The winner is the driver who clearly shines in the eyes of Ginetta, by offering the overall racing package of speed, an ability to learn, professionalism, fitness and team work. To apply for the Ginetta Junior Scholarship visit: ginetta.com/scholarship.php Only applicants born between 1 January 1999 and 21 March 2001 are eligible. A

Global community

Lauren Romano meets executive principle Bernie Peploe and associate executive principle Peter Haylock of the Fulham College Academy Trust to talk about giving students a voice and personalising the curriculum to suit their needs

A

new era of education has dawned. Bernie Peploe, executive principle of the Fulham College Academy Trust is justifiably proud of the umbrella of schools she oversees. ‘The students view us as a global community and I think that’s an important part of our ethos,’ she begins. The community she refers to is a federation of Fulham Cross Girls’ School and Fulham College Boys’ School (for students aged 11 to 16), together with the Fulham Enterprise Studio, which takes both girls and boys from the age of 14 to 19. From the traditional classroom-based teaching on offer at the single-sex schools, to the focus on practical, hands-on expertise in construction, performing arts production and business that the studio school offers, the triumvirate of establishments that make up the trust provides a broad educational spectrum. ‘We tailor the curriculum to cater for the needs of our students,’ Bernie says. ‘We run a scholar club for high-achieving students, specifically focused on university and beyond. We link with Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, Imperial College London and the University of Sussex to give our pupils a taster of higher education, and we encourage them to aspire to be the best,’ adds associate executive principle Peter Haylock.

‘Our less academic students also get the support they need to make the necessary steps to improve their literacy and numeracy skills. If a student needs targeted help in any area, we provide one-to-one support, as well as group lessons every day after school.’ This thread of encouragement flows through the pastoral system too. The ACHIEVE Programme in operation at the boys’ school outlines its ethos in seven mission statements, with, again, a focus on aspiration and aiming high. The rewards system, which is intertwined with

We have a model that people are very interested in as we deliver the academic as well as the vocational the programme, enables students to earn points that equate to summer days out. The Innovation Days at the girls’ school run along the same lines; every half term the school collapses the curriculum for a day. From soap-making to compiling a newspaper in collaboration with journalists from the Daily Mail, all the activities are designed to broaden the girls’ horizons. Investment in the very best teaching and constant feedback keeps the adaptable academy trust forward-thinking. Every year an anonymous survey is distributed to parents, staff and students to allow them to submit their thoughts. Teachers are monitored on a regular basis to ensure that

- 28 -

the standard of teaching is consistently excellent. Every half term students are given the opportunity to comment on their experiences in the classroom and their feedback is then reported to staff. The active student government is even involved in the recruitment of new teachers, with potential candidates appearing before a student panel. ‘Our students really do have a voice,’ Bernie assures. ‘We place an emphasis on smaller class sizes of about 25 students. Our greatest investment is in our teachers and smaller groups, which mean that our students get that extra, personally-tailored attention they wouldn’t necessarily receive in a standard sized class,’ she adds. Nowhere is this individual approach more visible than at the Fulham Enterprise Studio. It offers a very different sort of learning; its sixth formers, for example, are out on work placements two days a week. ‘The practical approach to learning is much more meaningful and we aim to deliver training that’s relevant to the local area’s requirements. Our students are so successful, they’re often offered employment by the time they finish,’ Bernie beams. This approach is evidently working. Over the last year the trust has received a number of prestigious accolades. Both Fulham College Boys’ School and Fulham Cross Girls’ School are in the top three per cent of schools nationally in terms of progress, with the boys’ school currently ranked twentieth in the country for its excellent advancements. Fulham College Academy

Trust is also part of Boris Johnson’s Gold Club. ‘We share good practice through the Gold Club and we work with different schools,’ Bernie tells me. ‘We have a model that people are very interested in as we deliver the academic as well as the vocational.’ With the next round of open days fast approaching, the trust holds an event in the summer term for year five parents to tour the school with the current year sevens. Meanwhile, the popular Experiences programme enables year fives to visit with the rest of their class to get a glimpse of what life is like at secondary school. A summer school runs on both sites too so that future students starting in September get the chance to familiarise themselves with the geography of the site. ‘My advice to parents looking for a secondary place for their children is to do your research and consider academic achievement but, more importantly, to visit all your local schools and find one where you feel comfortable and where you think your child will feel happy and safe,’ Bernie concludes. ‘Only then will they thrive.’ For more information about the Fulham College Academy Trust, visit: fulhamcollege.net

he smart furniture shops along the Fulham Road showcase powerful and unorthodox designs with the most discerning collectors in mind. One such shop is Robert Dickson & Lesley Rendall, at number 263, which sells extraordinary 20th-century French and Italian pieces from the 1930s to the 1970s, as well as lighting, mirrors and specially chosen paintings. Standout items include a pair of white Italian fibreglass ribbon chairs, dating from 1961 by Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi. At the top tier of the market is Godson & Coles at number 92, which stocks extraordinary furnishings for ultra-wealthy customers. One such marvel is the pristine 18th-century sofa made by Ince and Mayhew for Cobham Hall. It was

Taking centre-stage in the shop is an extraordinary statement table featuring detailed carvings. The top was made in Naples in 1805 and the base was exquisitely carved in around 1815-20, I learn. It was owned at one stage by Dodie Rosekrans, an international society figure, and is again available for £160,000. ‘You could imagine this table - 30 -

You would walk into a big marble entrance hall and gasp “wow!”’ Coles adds. ‘All our items are museum quality.’ Collectors should note that Godson & Coles will be exhibiting at Masterpiece London, a top art, antiques and design fair of the highest calibre, taking place at the Royal Hospital Chelsea from 26 June to 2 July. Since 2006 Charles Saunders has expanded the business to include a wide range of items that are made exclusively for the gallery. ‘The clients with more discerning tastes do not go to a store and buy everything in a single afternoon,’ Saunders says. ‘They will furnish their homes from different shops – from a variety of items that reflect their taste and lifestyle.’ The oak leaf decorated chandelier and a bleached mahogany extending table catch my eye, which I can also imagine taking pride of place in a country pile. Next time I have a rural manor to furnish, I know where to come.

The brainchild of polish engineer Roman Wajda, it promotes polish culture and art and houses the Library of Poland in London, which was founded in 1942 by the polish émigré government and has belonged to the centre since its opening. Film screenings, theatre performances and a regular jazz club are all regular fixtures at the cultural hub, I learn. For those who have not discovered this gem I recommend a visit, especially a trip to the Cafe Maja on the ground floor which serves excellent food. It is here that I meet Danuta and Artur, the kind-hearted couple who have devoted their lives to charity work and who are strongly involved with the association. Ten minutes later, I have already heard all about how Danuta and Artur started their philanthropic work as children. While most of their peers were watching TV, they were out rattling a tin and collecting money and later organising monthly fundraising events for the

In 1975, at the age of 18, Danuta and Artur helped run a youth club known as Pomidor, and later, the POM Club, in the basement of the Polish centre. Along with other volunteers the pair weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty and even did the cleaning themselves. Artur chaired the club for 30 years until it became a jazz club, which, in case anyone is wondering, is one of the best nights out in Hammersmith. Artur and Danuta are now respectively chair and general secretary of the Polish Airman’s Association where they work tirelessly to organise wonderful monthly lunches for polish veterans and their families, with highlights including screenings of spitfire films. Danuta also recently organised a ball to raise funds for her local church, St Matthew’s, and, if that wasn’t enough, her and Artur both manage to cram in being on the executive committee of the Hammersmith and Fulham Neighbourhood Watch Association, which supports residents in the borough who want to start up a scheme of their own. As we said goodbye, I thought how much better all local communities would be if there were more people out there like Danuta and Artur. Hammersmith Flyover closures Planning applications DATE REGISTERED: 15 May ADDRESS: Kenyon Street PROPOSAL: Erection of a rear extension at second-floor level over part of the existing back edition; installation of French doors with Juliet balcony to the rear roof slope. The Journal can confirm that the Hammersmith flyover will be closed to traffic in one direction for ten weekends until mid-August as part of the ongoing final phase of maintenance works carried out by TfL. The closures will take place on Friday evenings from 10.30pm until 5am on Monday mornings, with affected traffic diverted via the A40 Western Avenue. Works will be carried out on the eastbound carriageway for the first five weekends, before moving on to the westbound carriageway for the remaining five weekends. Concrete deck repairs and resurfacing work will allow the structure to be fully waterproofed and reduce the need for further maintenance in the future. Director of Asset Management at TfL, Dana Skelley, said the works to the flyover are ‘progressing well’. She went on to say that the weekend closures are a necessary process: ‘Our overriding focus when planning these weekend works has been to keep disruption to a minimum and we are ensuring that any affected drivers will have a clear, signed diversion route to help them complete their journey.’
