attracted William Murray, the 1st Earl of Mansfield, to Kenwood in the 18th century. Having decided to abandon his ancestral home in Scotland, Murray, who was an up-and-coming lawyer and later became the Chief Justice Lord Mansfield, wanted to invest in a house that was worthy of his background and education. He was also looking for somewhere that would allow him easy access to his work in the capital, but still act as a convenient suburban residence for ever-important socialising. Deciding to add his own mark to the building, Murray commissioned famous architect of the times, Robert Adam, to expand and refurbish the house to impress influential guests, as well as adding a south façade overlooking the heath. The neoclassical architect added the library to balance the orangery and added the Ionic portico at the entrance. The distinctive white stucco façade, topped with medallions, Greek key patterns and arabesques, is typical of Adam’s ornate style and with the exclusive right to manufacture stucco in England, Adam used Kenwood to act as an advertisement for the new material. In 1793 William Murray’s nephew inherited Kenwood House and during his three-year occupation, added the white brick wings and commissioned renowned landscape designer, Humphrey Repton, to design the gardens. The extensions were decorated with lavish interiors and stayed within the Mansfield family until the early 1900s.

T

he interesting thing about Kenwood House, the English stately house situated on Hampstead Heath, is not only the unique location for such a building, but also that this typically English manor has never been owned by an Englishman.

Over the centuries a Scottish family and an Irishman have had ownership of the sprawling 18th century manor. However, this lack in British possession hasn’t stopped Kenwood House from becoming very much a piece of the rich tapestry of English history and part of London’s unique cultural offering to local residents and visitors alike.

Perched on a ridge of high ground, the striking Georgian villa overlooks its own private lake and acres of lush parkland; the quiet surroundings are in stark contrast to the busy capital only a few miles away, which the house looks down on from the south side of the building. Built in 1616, the rural retreat

The arts have always featured heavily in Kenwood House’s narrative, and music in particular has become a famous trait of the manor’s programmes, with regular live concerts. Originally featuring classical concerts, in recent years pop music has become the main attraction with acts such as Blondie, Will Young, Ray Davies and Rufus Wainwright. From 1951 until 2006, Kenwood House would host a concert every Saturday during the summer, attracting thousands of people to picnic and enjoy the music and the spectacular fireworks display. However, in 1997 English Heritage was forced to abandon the evenings after protests from local residents which, at the time, put the future of the house in jeopardy as the concerts funded the maintenance of the house and the grounds. Eventually in 2008, a compromise was met where there would only be eight concerts and a new location on the Pasture Ground within Kenwood House, which was more appropriate. The concerts are now a popular and much-loved part of London’s summer. The rustic atmosphere, the unique views of London and the opportunity to explore the pathways and woodlands in and around Kenwood House, makes this manor house a truly cherished component of the diversity that London has to offer. n

The house today has very little furniture in the vast array of rooms and this is due to all contents of the house being auctioned off in 1922, thanks to the costly running of the estate. During the following three years the estate was divided and sold to various bodies until 1925, when Edward Cecil Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh (heir to the Guinness fortune), purchased the house and 74 remaining acres of the parkland from Kenwood Preservation Council. Kenwood House turned out to be the perfect location for Guinness to house his outstanding collection of paintings and, in turn, ensured the future of the building. The majority of the collection can now be seen displayed around the house and is a massive tourist attraction. The collection boasts work by Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Vermeer, Turner, Stubbs and Van Dyck, as well as the Suffolk collection of rare Elizabethan portraits. All of the artwork was bequeathed to the nation, along with the house, after Guinness’s death in 1927, and in 1928 the house was opened to the public. Today, the amazing range of artwork has become world famous and draws in an array of crowds all year round, along with the famous Adam library with its stunning friezes and grand colonnades. A favourite for tourists, Kenwood is also a popular place to spend a family day out, with the chance to enjoy sculptures by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Reg Butler in the gardens, and wander the new garden designed by Arabella

I

t must have been one of those classic Homer Simpson ‘Doh’ moments. The stage had been set for the launch of not just a new car, but of an entire new marque – Infiniti. The luxury Japanese brand (it’s an arm of Nissan just as Lexus is to Toyota) had long been popular in America, but now was the time for the cars to be sold in Europe. And then global economic chaos set in. You can imagine the conversation around the boardroom table. “So, remind me again, we have a range of luxury cars powered by powerful but thirsty V6 and V8 petrol engines. And the two biggest are both four-wheel drives. “So that means our cars are expensive gas-guzzlers that pump out huge amounts of CO2… and we major on Chelsea Tractors that attract unwanted attention from the antis. “And we’re going to launch all this

just as a recession hits. D’oh!” Against that backdrop, Infiniti might have been forgiven if it had quietly dropped its plans for Europe and retreated back the US. But to its credit it continued and even made a virtue out of the recession, deciding that lower-than-anticipated sales made the marque even more exclusive. But Infiniti bosses also knew that their cars wouldn’t be out of tune with the market forever, though even they would admit the more socially acceptable diesel models couldn’t come quickly enough. It’s been worth the wait. There are diesel versions of the gargantuan FX 4x4 and the forthcoming M saloon, but the pick of the crop is the EX30d. EX is what Infiniti calls a compact crossover, part 4x4, part luxury coupé. But it’s the 30d bit that’s the most significant element here. It refers to the car’s 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine,

developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance, and which goes some way to restoring the car’s environmental credentials. The combined mpg, for example, is 33mpg – rather better than the petrol’s 25mpg – while emissions improve to a better-but-still-notbrilliant 224g/km. The figures are good enough, though, to allow you to drive the Infiniti with a clear-ish conscience, and that’s all that really matters. But the best news is that the new diesel engine is really rather good. Infiniti’s 3.7-litre V6 petrol is a hard act to follow: it’s creamy smooth, wonderfully powerful and makes a superb noise. The diesel’s deep bass rumble on start-up instantly lets you know it’s an oil burner, but once on the move you’d be hard pushed to tell it’s not a petrol by listening alone. Infiniti is all about refinement, and the fact that there’s a diesel under the bonnet just means the engineers have worked a little harder to ensure its air of sophistication remains. Better than that, though, the engine’s huge pulling power means that in everyday overtaking terms it’s probably quicker than the petrol. And you certainly won’t spend as much time at the filling station. The super-smooth 7-speed automatic box must take some of the credit here. Changes are instant and imperceptible and there’s a Sport mode to sharpen things up still further. Although it has four-wheel drive, in normal use the system has a rearward bias, meaning the EX feels quite sporting when being driven with verve. But when the going gets slippery, the intelligent system reads the conditions and immediately starts to equalise the torque between the wheels, so that grip and drive are where they are needed. In other respects, the diesel is identical to the petrol version. That means clever coupé-inspired looks (even if that means it’s not quite as spacious as you might think) and a seriously luxurious interior. High-quality leather is offset by a modern, black lacquer finish to the console, though classic maple wood is an option. And the top-of-the-range GT Premium model is absolutely loaded with seriously clever kit. On top of the usual stuff – the climate control, the touch screen satnav, the 2GB Music

Box where you can download your favourite CDs and not have to lug them about with you, and so on – the Premium has something called Lane Departure Prevention (LDP). So you’re driving down the motorway and your mind – and the car – starts to wander. As you stray over the white line, the system gives an audible and visible warning as, indeed, do many other similar systems. Where the Infiniti goes one better is that, should the driver ignore the warnings, it intercepts by gently applying the brakes to one side of the car to create a yaw effect that brings the car back into line. To LDP you can add a series of other acronyms such as Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC), Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW). If you have a crash in the Infiniti, it’s clearly because you wanted one. But perhaps the cleverest bit of standard kit is the Around View Monitor (yes, you’ve got it: AVM). Imagine a parking camera mounted not just on the tailgate, but also on the radiator grille and within both side door mirrors. Merge all four feeds together and you have a remarkable bird’s-eye image that appears to come

from some 20 feet above the car. It allows inch-perfect parking everything, even in the tightest of gaps. But perhaps the thing that lifts EX30d – any Infiniti indeed – above the rest is what they call the Infiniti Total Ownership Experience. The showrooms are a mix of boutique hotel and nightclub cool. Owners are treated like individuals – VIP individuals, that is – and Infiniti reckons the aftercare is second to none. And now Londoners now have a chance to experience it first-hand with the recent opening of the capital’s Infiniti Centre in Piccadilly. Even Homer Simpson would be treated with due reverence. n

Following on from the huge success of our inaugural VANTAGE HAMPSTEAD EDITION last month, I am delighted to welcome you to the October issue, showcasing the best life has to offer for both residents and businesses in the local area. We kick off this spook-tacular issue by speaking to Hampstead resident and saviour of the New End Theatre, Brian Daniels (p.8) about his change of direction from head hunter to theatre director, with a little help from Band of Gold scriptwriter Kay Mellor. like Show Business An institution in Hampstead, the New End Theatre is still playing host to some of theatre’s finest and, as artistic director and chief executive, Brian Daniels explains to Jenny White how every day brings a new challenge

I

t is a theatrical miracle that after 36 years, the mortuary of the former New End Hospital in Hampstead is still a much-loved and well-known theatre, regularly entertaining the residents of North West London and managing to avoid the clutches of property developers. The success of the theatre isn’t down to help from the Arts Council, the National Lottery or any subsidy from other government-run organisations, but instead is thanks to one man. Artistic director and chief executive Brian Daniels sank his private pension fund into the 84-seat venue 13 years ago, and ever since then has worked hard to keep it going. “It is a rollercoaster. To run a small theatre as a business is virtually impossible without funding. I thought it could

be done, but it is increasingly difficult because to put on a theatre show is very labour intensive,” explains Brian, who was also chief executive of the Shaw Theatre in the West End. “People think that the expense is to do with the number of cast members, but the actors are not the highest cost – the cost of keeping the venue open and running and staffed is much greater than the production.” Reading over Brian’s CV, there is nothing in his background to suggest he would ever end up running his own theatre. Until his 40s, Brian had been chief executive of his own recruitment and headhunting consultancy company and, with no theatre training whatsoever, it was only a chance meeting with actress and director Kay Mellor that changed Brian’s direction. “I was asked by Kay

Mellor if I wanted to produce a film that she had written and, at the time, I was running my own business and this opportunity just sounded more interesting. I realised after a while that I was more interested in the process of how plays worked, rather than films, as I have always been a theatregoer rather than a film-goer,” says Brian. “Perhaps it was a mid-life crisis, but I sold my business and started doing theatre producing, as well as writing my own plays.” As is often the case with New End offerings, many of the shows have strong Jewish themes – from Dan Clancy’s Holocaust play, Timekeepers, to the Jewish mother play Mother/Son by Jeffrey Solomon – to appeal to the large Jewish society in North West London. For Brian, the local Jewish community make up a large proportion of his regular audience. “Jewish themes are normally very popular, provided they are written well, because you can’t pull the wool over the eyes of a North West London audience; they are discerning and word of mouth is very strong,” says Brian, who clarifies that the New End doesn’t just cater for the Jewish community, but also bears in mind the eclectic mix of residents in the area. “For me, it is about putting on good drama and actually Jewish people are great theatregoers; whether the play has a Jewish theme or not, they will go to the theatre. It’s the standard of the productions that is more important than if it has a Jewish theme.” For Brian, his job is one that keeps him on his creative toes, coming up with funding ideas, making the all important decisions about which plays he wants to bring to life on the tiny stage, and discovering new play writers. Names such as Dame Judi Dench, Jerry Hall, Stephen Berkoff and Stephen Fry are just a few who have walked the New End boards and only this week, Brian explains he took a phone call which expressed Ricky Gervais’ interest in working at the New End Theatre. “Every day is completely different and I think that is what I love about it. It is unpredictable because the phone rings and you don’t know who it is or what they have to offer,” smiles Brian. It is obvious to see that Brian has invested, both financially and emotionally, all of himself into the theatre. It is a theatre that is very sacred to the local residents and offers something of a unique atmosphere that larger theatres would struggle to match. “The thing about the New End is that it is completely independent as a venue, and when people come in it’s as though they are coming into my front room. I have a very personal approach and I get to know a lot of our customers and patrons,” explains Brian with obvious satisfaction. “The New End Theatre is such a valuable brand that I will never let go of it. For me, I don’t think you can ever lose sight of who you are doing it for; you’re not doing it for yourself, you are doing it for the community.” n For further information, visit www.offwestendtheatres.co.uk

The arts have always featured heavily in Kenwood House’s narrative, and music in particular has become a famous trait of the manor’s programmes, with regular live concerts. Originally featuring classical concerts, in recent years pop music has become the main attraction with acts such as Blondie, Will Young, Ray Davies and Rufus Wainwright. From 1951 until 2006, Kenwood House would host a concert every Saturday during the summer, attracting thousands of people to picnic and enjoy the music and the spectacular fireworks display. However, in 1997 English Heritage was forced to abandon the evenings after protests from local residents which, at the time, put the future of the house in jeopardy as the concerts funded the maintenance of the house and the grounds. Eventually in 2008, a compromise was met where there would only be eight concerts and a new location on the Pasture Ground within Kenwood House, which was more appropriate. The concerts are now a popular and much-loved part of London’s summer. From Café Rouge to the Nobu Berkeley, The Wolseley and the bars at The Connaught and Claridges, again and again, architect and interior designer David Collins has mastered the art of making people linger over their drinks, says Claire Adler

avid Collins, currently celebrating 25 years in business, recently scooped an award from Wallpaper* magazine for the addition of a glamorous martini trolley at the Connaught Bar. At last year’s British Design Awards he bagged Best New Interior of the Year for his design of that same bar. Lauded by Time Out for his “quirky touches, exuberance, fearlessness and individuality”, David Collins had his first thoughts about design at a young age. “My father was an architect. I vaguely considered law before going into architecture, but I remember asking myself how the ceiling stayed up,” he says. Today, David Collins is one of London’s most prolific architects and interior designers, with a glittering portfolio of private residences, alongside international work including the Graff Delaire winery, lodges, restaurant and spa in South Africa and the Ritz Carlton Residences in Bangkok’s MahaNakhon skyscraper – a newly built 77-storey tower. The MahaNakhon Residences are the first project for David Collins in Asia, and include a 90-piece collection of bespoke designed furniture, which will eventually form the basis of a new David Collins furniture collection. “Our style is one that focuses on the importance of detail, colour, atmosphere, lighting and comfort. This is Bangkok city living at its most prestigious,” says Collins of the MahaNakhon project. The impetus for ultra-luxury living in private residences is the fact that hotels are not offering high enough staff ratios to guests, according to Collins. “In luxury private residences, guests rarely need to even pick up a phone because their every need is met, even down to their preferred shower pressure,” he says. So how have today’s wealthiest interior design clients made their money? “Some, by not paying bills,” quips Collins. Later this year, London will see the opening of a new five-star hotel on the Embankment – the Corinthia, with a

bar and restaurant designed by Collins, while a Wolseley hotel is planned in an art deco building on Alderton Street in Mayfair, near Selfridges, for 2012. This summer, Collins built a temporary kitchen and pop-up restaurant at Whitehall Place on the site of the planned Corinthia Hotel, formerly the home of the Grand Hotel Metropole. An Italian chef prepared a fish menu for guests, tempting them with the lure of a five-star landmark in the making. The thought of London needing yet another five-star hotel is perhaps surprising, but Collins is confident that competition is good and that London’s luxury hotels will continue to be filled. In the meantime, Collins is accustomed to working to a tight schedule and claims he weeds out clients he doesn’t get on with. “I currently have half a dozen projects in the very

early stages of negotiation, half a dozen developing into jobs, six in the process of being built, and three I’m just finishing off. They range from retail projects in Milan, to homes in the South of France, to a hotel in South Africa,” he says, alluding to the assignment he has just completed at the Stellenbosch winery owned by billionaire diamond magnate, Laurence Graff. “Laurence Graff is one of those people you don’t say no to,” says Dublin-born Collins. “I have a good relationship with Graff, he is detail-oriented, embraces new ideas, is passionate about art and sometimes keeps others chasing to keep up. I like clients who collaborate and make projects fun.” Collins is also nothing if not versatile. His concept for Café Rouge two decades ago was such a success, it spawned a host of “knock-offs”, he says. Alongside his über-luxury projects, he’s currently evolving the establishments of another client, Prêt a Manger. “It will be a subtle reinvention of a well-loved brand, refreshing it and driving newness into it,” says Collins. With a strong idea of what a space will look like by the time he presents his proposals to a client, Collins says he fine-tunes, bringing subtle layers of detail during the development of his projects. His approach is evidently working. When asked which of his projects he is most proud of, Collins hesitates, moving on to feedback he has received from others. “I get lots of letters and text messages from friends and people who’ve stayed in the Lime Wood Hotel or eaten at The Wolseley. The squirrel-shaped lamps I used in The Wolseley are now in practically every London café and restaurant,” he says. “People have told me they appreciate the lighting, the way you can go there to people-watch. They say The Wolseley has changed their way of seeing London.” n

Women have a lot to contend with in the name of fashion and one of the areas where it can be most painful if mistakes are made, is with the feet. “There is a huge amount of misinformation and half truths in the press and from various practitioners about the evils of fashion shoes and in particular high heels” says Nick Cullen of The Wellington Hospital Foot & Ankle Unit. “The desire to wear fashionable and high-heeled shoes is inevitable, entirely understandable and also unstoppable,” agrees Mark Herron. “It is an area where, with a little basic understanding of the way the foot works, there is no reason why many people shouldn’t enjoy wearing fashion shoes without any undue sense of guilt or harming their feet. “In our experience there really is very little evidence that deformity of the toes is caused by narrow fitting shoes or high heels,” he explains. “One commonly cited problem with fashion shoes is that they cause bunions due to their narrow fit. When you look at a foot with a bunion, the primary underlying problem is that the foot is too wide at the level of the metatarsals rather than being too narrow, which very much goes against the theory.” Mark continues: “The factors associated with bunion formation include having a strong family history of bunions, being female and also the use of shoes. It is not fashion shoes, but any shoe wear which inevitably leads to relative inactivity of the small muscles of the foot – and it is probably this that is associated with the toe deformities we see.” Most high-heeled shoes have a pointed, narrow toe box that crowds the toes and forces them into an unnatural triangular shape. As heel height increases, the pressure under

the ball of the foot may double, placing greater pressure on the forefoot as it is forced into the pointed toe box. “There are certainly some pre-existing conditions which will be exacerbated by the use of a narrow fitting shoe” says Nick. These in particular would be bunions or bunionettes (a widening of the foot associated with the fifth metatarsal on the outer border of the foot) and also Mortons Neuromas (a painful condition due to swelling of the nerves which sit between the toes and produce pain and tingling down into the toes in particular in shoe wear). “If a person already has toe deformities then certainly squeezing into narrow shoes may cause these deformed toes to rub on the shoe wear as well.” So, if you are able to select a shoe with a wider toe, this will reduce the pressure on your toes and under the balls of your feet. “The issue of high-heels is also one about which there is much confusion,” says Mark. “If a woman has no toe deformities or calloused skin underneath the front part of the foot and stable ankles, then there is no reason why she shouldn’t be wearing high heels as much as she wishes. There is certainly no evidence for causation of

toe deformities by high heels. “It is important, however, that women understand that when they are in highheels proportionally a lot more loading will go through the front of the foot. As the woman ages, the fat padding underneath this part of the foot tends to thin, and this can lead to pain under the front part of the foot if wearing heels over protracted periods of time.” One way around this can be to use more of a wedge type shoe which despite having the appearance of a high-heel has less difference between the heel and the front part of the foot. This type of shoe also tends to support the arch well and therefore uses affectively the whole sole of the foot for transferring weight rather than just loading disproportionally through the front part of the foot. “All in all we both have a highly progressive and realistic approach to foot and ankle issues and if we can help you get back into high-heels and narrow fitting shoes then we will,” say both surgeons. DANGERS OF ‘HIGH-STREET’ COSMETIC SURGERY EXPOSED Numerous patients are emerging from expensive cosmetic surgeries with unsatisfactory results, health complications or traumatic experiences – so what should we look out for when shopping around for a plastic surgeon, asks Claire Saunders? Cosmetic surgery has been one of the few industries to have bucked the trend during the recent recession, growing by roughly a fifth in two years. However, recent statistics have revealed that up to 75 per cent of cosmetic surgery clinics are unregulated, potentially harming unknowing patients. The report, carried out by The National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD), an independent Whitehall-funded body which aims to improve medical care, showed that many companies offering cosmetic procedures such as face lifts, breast enlargement and liposuction, are not following basic safety guidelines. In fact, over half the companies approached breached the rules of the Care Quality Commission (CQC), by failing or refusing to fill in the questionnaire. “It’s been incredibly difficult to get information about the industry” said Ian Martin, a surgeon and one of the authors. “If we have difficulty finding who is doing what and where, then heaven help patients trying to find out what these facilities are like.” NCEPOD found that numerous cosmetic surgery clinics in the UK offered a large ‘menu’ of procedures (from nose jobs to liposuction) but in many cases the surgeons were not sufficiently experienced in all the surgeries on offer. “These figures present a distressing picture, but one which is sadly not surprising to us as they only confirm what we have been saying for years – that there is an absolute need for statutory regulation in this sector,” comments Nigel Mercer, president of The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons – a body that only has around a third of the industry as members. So crucially, patients considering cosmetic procedures need to ensure that they fully research the credentials of any private clinic or hospital they approach for plastic surgery. Without a diesel model in its line-up, buyers struggled to make sense of Infiniti, says Matthew Carter. But now that’s all changed

I

t must have been one of those classic Homer Simpson ‘Doh’ moments. The stage had been set for the launch of not just a new car, but of an entire new marque – Infiniti. The luxury Japanese brand (it’s an arm of Nissan just as Lexus is to Toyota) had long been popular in America, but now was the time for the cars to be sold in Europe. And then global economic chaos set in. You can imagine the conversation around the boardroom table. “So, remind me again, we have a range of luxury cars powered by powerful but thirsty V6 and V8 petrol engines. And the two biggest are both four-wheel drives. “So that means our cars are expensive gas-guzzlers that pump out huge amounts of CO2… and we major on Chelsea Tractors that attract unwanted attention from the antis. “And we’re going to launch all this

just as a recession hits. D’oh!” Against that backdrop, Infiniti might have been forgiven if it had quietly dropped its plans for Europe and retreated back the US. But to its credit it continued and even made a virtue out of the recession, deciding that lower-than-anticipated sales made the marque even more exclusive. But Infiniti bosses also knew that their cars wouldn’t be out of tune with the market forever, though even they would admit the more socially acceptable diesel models couldn’t come quickly enough. It’s been worth the wait. There are diesel versions of the gargantuan FX 4x4 and the forthcoming M saloon, but the pick of the crop is the EX30d. EX is what Infiniti calls a compact crossover, part 4x4, part luxury coupé. But it’s the 30d bit that’s the most significant element here. It refers to the car’s 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine,

developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance, and which goes some way to restoring the car’s environmental credentials. The combined mpg, for example, is 33mpg – rather better than the petrol’s 25mpg – while emissions improve to a better-but-still-notbrilliant 224g/km. The figures are good enough, though, to allow you to drive the Infiniti with a clear-ish conscience, and that’s all that really matters. But the best news is that the new diesel engine is really rather good. Infiniti’s 3.7-litre V6 petrol is a hard act to follow: it’s creamy smooth, wonderfully powerful and makes a superb noise. The diesel’s deep bass rumble on start-up instantly lets you know it’s an oil burner, but once on the move you’d be hard pushed to tell it’s not a petrol by listening alone. Infiniti is all about refinement, and the fact that there’s a diesel under the bonnet just means the engineers have worked a little harder to ensure its air of sophistication remains. Better than that, though, the engine’s huge pulling power means that in everyday overtaking terms it’s probably quicker than the petrol. And you certainly won’t spend as much time at the filling station. The super-smooth 7-speed automatic box must take some of the credit here. Changes are instant and imperceptible and there’s a Sport mode to sharpen things up still further. Although it has four-wheel drive, in normal use the system has a rearward bias, meaning the EX feels quite sporting when being driven with verve. But when the going gets slippery, the intelligent system reads the conditions and immediately starts to equalise the torque between the wheels, so that grip and drive are where they are needed. In other respects, the diesel is identical to the petrol version. That means clever coupé-inspired looks (even if that means it’s not quite as spacious as you might think) and a seriously luxurious interior. High-quality leather is offset by a modern, black lacquer finish to the console, though classic maple wood is an option. And the top-of-the-range GT Premium model is absolutely loaded with seriously clever kit. On top of the usual stuff – the climate control, the touch screen satnav, the 2GB Music

Box where you can download your favourite CDs and not have to lug them about with you, and so on – the Premium has something called Lane Departure Prevention (LDP). So you’re driving down the motorway and your mind – and the car – starts to wander. As you stray over the white line, the system gives an audible and visible warning as, indeed, do many other similar systems. Where the Infiniti goes one better is that, should the driver ignore the warnings, it intercepts by gently applying the brakes to one side of the car to create a yaw effect that brings the car back into line. To LDP you can add a series of other acronyms such as Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC), Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW). If you have a crash in the Infiniti, it’s clearly because you wanted one. But perhaps the cleverest bit of standard kit is the Around View Monitor (yes, you’ve got it: AVM). Imagine a parking camera mounted not just on the tailgate, but also on the radiator grille and within both side door mirrors. Merge all four feeds together and you have a remarkable bird’s-eye image that appears to come

from some 20 feet above the car. It allows inch-perfect parking everything, even in the tightest of gaps. But perhaps the thing that lifts EX30d – any Infiniti indeed – above the rest is what they call the Infiniti Total Ownership Experience. The showrooms are a mix of boutique hotel and nightclub cool. Owners are treated like individuals – VIP individuals, that is – and Infiniti reckons the aftercare is second to none. And now Londoners now have a chance to experience it first-hand with the recent opening of the capital’s Infiniti Centre in Piccadilly. Even Homer Simpson would be treated with due reverence. n

Wide open spaces Flat screen TVs are getting flatter, with some new LED TVs’ depth measured in mere millimetres, but what about sound? Quality audio can only come from beefy speakers, and in an effort to give your home entertainment system a bit of oomph without adding cable clutter, we’ve witnessed a plethora of soundbars – such as this one from British audio brand Orbitsound – trying to sneak into living rooms. There’s an immediate problem with the T12, and that’s its complete lack of wall-mounting options. Still, for those who prefer not to hang their plasma or LCD TV above the fireplace, it’s physically perfect; its black, lacquered shell isn’t too large at 54cm across, and will suit almost any screen size. Also included is a subwoofer, and here’s where the T12 succeeds while other soundbars fail. Attached to the main unit by a single speaker cable and not individually powered, it’s possible to adjust the bass levels or, if you really can’t stand the thought of housing a huge black box (it’s slim at 22cm on each side, but does reach 46cm in height), it can be detached and forgotten, but I’d advise against that. Also not to be ignored is the T12’s built-in dock for an iPod, iPod Touch or iPhone. You’ll find it atop the main unit, and it works rather

well; tracks can be skipped and playlists chosen directly from a slim and simple remote control. This is actually the second version of the T12, with the major addition in this incarnation being a video output for that iPod dock. It’s joined by a slew of inputs that ought to allow you to connect almost any device – including any TV, of course – to the T12. Before we reveal if the T12 successfully boosts a TV’s audio, first know that Orbitsound promises a stereo sound that follows the listener around a room, principally by fitting the T12 with one centre speaker and two ‘spatial’ speakers at the unit’s sides. And in action, it’s obvious what’s going on; flick its ‘stereo width’ switch to ‘wide’ and the soundstage both lengthens and gets louder, though obvious stereo effects from such a narrow speaker are necessarily limited. As effective as that is for music, the sound isn’t nearly refined enough to challenge a proper home cinema system and, while it may offer more power than your TV’s speakers, the T12 is happiest being used as a music system for an iPhone; in a kitchen or diner, Orbitsound’s T12 is hugely impressive.

tyle in golf just became too easy – all those XXL t-shirts and sloppy polos rather than a shirt that fits, multiple pleats rather than a flat-fronted trouser,” he says. “Golf itself has become more fashionable, appealing more to younger men, evolving so more people can get out there and enjoy it. But its style has yet to catch up. It’s time it revived its old colour and edge.” That is something he is busy putting right. It is a mission close to his heart. After all, Poulter is ranked seventh in the world. It is lucky for some: 2010 has also seen him take a second position in the Abu Dhabi Gold Championship and his first PGA Tour win, at the WGC Accenture World Match Play. All this, without his signature bootleg tartan trousers – “because plain trousers just look all the same” – stealing the limelight. With his company, IJP Design, Poulter is also bringing lightweight sleeveless striped cardigans, brightly-hued knee-length tailored shorts, neat, fitted polo shirts and even Swarowski crystalstudded belts to the course. These are smart garments in a broader sense as well, cut to allow necessary ease of movement, using technical fabrics to wick away moisture and maintain breathability. It is a brand doing as well in club shops as Poulter is on the course too. What began as an idea sketched on hotel letterhead paper in 2003, has this year gone into overdrive. As of this summer, it is sold in all 35 golf-playing nations, is moving into fashion retail and is set to expand in line with golf’s popularity. A women’s golf wear line and even one for kids is preparing to tee off for 2011. “My dad always dressed nattily, and one of my first jobs was selling menswear on a market stall,” says Poulter. “Sport was always my first love but I knew it was important to me to look good on the course and wear what I wanted. So I thought I’d best do it myself.” There is, however, more to IJP Design than Poulter’s love of flashy duds and his confession that he “tends to be a bit flamboyant off the course as well”. The clothing company is a longer term business prospect, a cashing in on his public profile and his sartorial reputation alike, with post-golf life in mind. “I don’t want to get to 50 and wonder what to do next, and I’ve always admired golfers who have looked beyond the sport alone to do something in the business of golf. their names to have something in place for when they can’t play anymore.” To develop it as Poulter has done is, however, harder than it looks. Poulter’s insistence on wearing his own clothing means, for instance, that lucrative sponsorship deals are not in the offing – rather, young up-and-coming British players the likes of Steve Lewton, Giowan Suh and Gary Boyd are being sponsored by IJP. Few other golfers, with the exception of Greg Norman, have successfully pulled off launching a clothing line either. “It’s just too easy to sign up with some fashion brand now. If going my own way doesn’t work out, at least I’ve given it a try, and at least I’ve got to wear what I like,” he says. “It is a huge risk though. It requires huge investment. But I think there will be a growing crossover of golf and fashion in coming years. More players want to look good on the course and keep looking good in the clubhouse.” Indeed, while he certainly imposes his experience of play and his idea of taste on IJP Design products, the company is building a dedicated design team to keep the new collections coming. He needs it, since he still sees his job as playing championship golf, with a hectic schedule that leaves little time for pondering fabric swatches and samples. “My job is still to try to hole some putts and if I can give some design ideas on the side, that’s great,” he says – though the fact that putts equals units sold is not lost on him. “There’s certainly a relationship there to work with – success on the course translates into sales. For the moment, though, my working life has a very simple dynamic. It’s called performance-related pay. This isn’t football. In golf, if I don’t play well, I don’t get paid. ike many people, I find that it takes a few days to settle into ‘holiday mode’, but in Ojai the process seemed to take just a few hours, and before you know it you can’t remember what day it is or whether there was anything requiring your attention – nor do you really care. Every last detail at the Inn is designed around comfort and relaxation. Separate one-story haciendas are spread throughout the expansive 220-acre resort, each with a beautiful courtyard at their centre, tinkling fountains and a myriad of colourful plant life. The rooms and suites manage to exude luxury from every corner, and yet combine this with a relaxed and friendly style – a real home away from home with vast beds, Ojai Nest bedding, remote controlled fireplaces and comfy sofas. Getting around the resort is a pleasure in itself – walkways through the golf course and gardens are buzzing with hummingbirds, geckos dart here and there, and the scent of flowers and herbs fills the air. One of the best ways to experience the serenity and natural beauty that the Chumash Indians and early Spanish settlers discovered in the Ojai Valley is on horseback. We went for a trail ride through the picturesque Ojai Land Conservancy, high up in the mountains, across fragrant meadows, winding along dusty tracks through ravines and across rushing rivers, with no sign of human life anywhere – a chance to forget entirely the outside world and dream a while of the Wild West. The town of Ojai contains a surprising blend of cosmopolitan style and small-town charm and is easily reached on foot, by bicycle or car. It’s home to an eclectic mix of writers, artists, philosophers and agricultural growers, and the beautiful homes hidden away in the surrounding hills sequester a lot of the Hollywood crowd seeking a restful getaway from the hectic pace of LA. Beverly Hills A brief stop in Los Angeles is must if you’re flying in or out of LAX, and I’ve always been fond of the palm-fringed oasis of Beverly Hills; a great base for shopping and sightseeing, but also gives you the real ‘LA experience’. Montage Beverly Hills is the newest hotel in the famous 90210 zipcode, and is perfect for business and leisure travellers alike. The rooms are luxurious and comfortable, and the huge spa is a destination in itself. A visit to celebrity ‘blonder’ Kim Vo, whose salon is based at Spa Montage, is a must – some A-list highlights are a great souvenir!

Kobe beef bolognese and lobster rolls were two particular favourites. Montage Beverly Hills’ own restaurant, Parq, is well worth a visit – a lot of thought goes into the creative menu, and opt for the wine pairings to get the best experience. For world class shopping, Rodeo Drive is around the corner from the Montage, or the house car (a Maybach, no less) can drop you off at Robertson Boulevard or The Grove Mall.

Ski season is coming

As the winter draws closer, now is the ideal time to start thinking about the coming season. Emma Fitzmaurice gets you prepared

I

f you’ve invested in ski equipment then it is worth looking after it properly by giving it a pre-season overhaul: Check your bindings by forcing the release having tightened up the settings. Also check your boot heels and toes for signs of wear that might prevent them from releasing cleanly from the bindings, and make sure they haven’t suffered from rot or distortion resulting from unnoticed damp when you put them away last year. When you’ve finished, don’t forget to leave your ski boots buckled so they retain their shape. If you own high carbon steel skis then check they were properly wiped down at the end of the previous season. Examine the bottom for damage and get any deep scratches or chips professionally repaired. Check for burrs along the edges of the skis and remove them as required using a stone. A few extra sweeps of the stone along the edges will help maintain the crispness that you are looking forward to feeling next time you put them to work. This is also the time to give your skis a waxing. This protects the ski against scratches and other marks and also helps prevent the sun from causing damage through oxidation. Of course the wax also has water repelling properties which is why it makes such a difference to the action on the slopes. Spread a thin layer of liquid, paste or melted cake wax over the base of the ski or if you really love your skis and want to give them a treat, take them to a ski shop for a proper hot waxing.

Now your equipment is sorted, it’s time to get yourself prepared. Fitness is crucial if you want to avoid injury and not end up wasting your time in a plaster cast. Build in some time for pre-season exercises as they will help you avoid the worst of the aches and pains typically suffered by skiers the day after you first hit the slopes. High-stepping is great training for the legs as it exercises the same muscles you will use when doing deep knee bends. Swimming, jogging and running are great exercises for anyone who wants to improve their general strength and aerobic fitness but downhill running on a gentle incline will specifically help you tone up the muscles you will be using on the slopes. If you go to the gym then you are probably in better shape than most but start putting in some extra time on the resistance machines that help you work your upper thighs. All that is left now is time to get in some pre-season training. This will help you polish up your skills and make it less likely you will suffer any embarrassing incidents in faraway places. Fortunately there are many indoor ski facilities up and down the country where you have the opportunity to take to the snow. If you’ve never tried this sort of thing then it is certainly time you had a go as, apart from the view, these slopes are not just as good as the real thing, they are the real thing. In fact in some respects they are better, particularly in terms of reliability as the fact that they are indoors means they are not susceptible to adverse weather which might otherwise mess up the quality of the surface.

Gastro than Pub Resident food critic, Ruthe Wainman visit The Wells Tavern for stylish, modern and affordable fare

C

harged with focussing on restaurants in Hampstead, I’ve actually found it quite a tough call. Like so many London suburbs, a fair percentage of the village’s culinary offering is made up of chains. To be fair, there are a number of exceptions, which is why when an influential foodie friend recommended I try out local gastro pub The Wells Tavern, I didn’t need much persuasion. Even from the outside The Wells stands apart from the crowd, housed, as it is in a stunning Georgian villa just a stone’s thrown from the Heath. As my companion and I approached one recent Friday lunchtime, we were greeted by groups of Yummy Mummies, the ubiquitous buggies in tow and dogs all dining al fresco in the October sunshine. Inside the interior design is modern, with its charcoal coloured walls, wooden floors and stylish open fire, all set off by a contemporary chandelier. It was very chic, understated and relaxed - definitely more gastro than pub. Upstairs there are a couple of elegant dining rooms, perfect for a more private dinner party seating up to 22. Noticing the extensive cocktail list, I thought it would be rude not to sample one of The Wells’ impressive sounding concoctions. I plumped for a Coffee Martini and whilst it was undeniably delicious, it probably would have been more appropriate as an after dinner drink than as an aperitif! The Wells offers a daily-changing, seasonal menu presided over by longstanding Head Chef Greg Smith. Anything with figs and nuts gets my

vote so I had no problem choosing my starter, a mouth-watering combination of goat’s cheese and pecan nuts with figs, watercress and chicory leaves, all enlivened with a dash of pomegranate dressing. My companion being a meat lover opted for the chorizo and feta salad with cherry vine tomatoes, cucumber and olives. He duly pronounced it equally as light on the palate. With the likes of sausages and mash and chateaubriand on the menu the next course was a tougher choice. I finally decided on the confit duck leg with braised red cabbage, potato dauphinoise and fine beans with a glazing of crème de cassis and blackcurrant jus. This was one of the most delicious dishes I’ve tasted for a while and one I’d love to try out myself at home. To accompany the dish, Simon, one of The Wells’ managers, suggested a glass of El Grano Carmenere – a Chilean wine whose blackcurrant, blackberry and pepper notes were the perfect complement to the duck. My companion meanwhile couldn’t resist the rib-eye steak with shallot and tarragon butter accompanied by a very generous portion of chips and watercress salad. The little touches such as the homemade mayonnaise and ketchup were most welcome; once again the

accent was very much on the gastro rather than the pub. Unfortunately for the waistline, the desserts proved too hard to resist. I enjoyed samplers of the damson and apple crumble with ginger custard - a wonderful combination of flavours, light in texture and not too sweet – and the richly seductive Grand Marnier and orange Jaffa chocolate pot. My companion had the cheese plate; my only criticism was that the selection could have benefited from some chutney. The owner of The Wells is Beth Coventry, whose sister is Fay Maschler, the nation’s most respected restaurant critic. Perhaps some sibling advice has helped ensure the exemplary quality of the dishes. The food is only part of the story however. Also setting the place apart, with relaxed and friendly service; everything possible was done to make us feel welcome and involved. It’s difficult to think of an occasion that The Wells Tavern wouldn’t be perfect for. From a family meal to a romantic evening for two, it ticks all the boxes. comments on the current trends in the residential sales market

The rental market in St John’s Wood, Regent’s Park and Maida Vale remains buoyant with rents staying strong due to the continued imbalance between high demand and a severe lack of quality properties to rent. This shortage is due to the exceptional demand and a record number of tenancies renewing from last year. Our advice to landlords would be if you have a property to let, don’t wait - take advantage of the market now. We see this pattern of inequality between supply and demand continuing until at least the end of the year. Demand will fall in the final quarter, however even this reduced demand will outstrip the limited supply of quality properties coming available. Our recommendation to tenants is therefore to be prepared to compromise - this is key for tenants in what remains a landlord’s market. There has been much discussion concerning the increase of the Assured Shorthold Tenancies (AST) rent threshold. From the 1 October the threshold for Housing Act Tenancies was raised to a rental level of £100,000 pa from its previous £25,000pa limit. The change will be retrospective and will be applied to existing tenancies that were contractual specifically due to their rental level. This has an impact on landlords in a number of ways; the tenancy deposit must now be registered with one of the Tenancy Deposit Protection Schemes, the statutory notice period for landlords to terminate the Tenancy may differ from the contract, and forfeiture actions for rent arrears may cause some difficulty as they will now have to be in line with the Grounds of the Housing Act 1988. The above sentiment means that investors have an appetite to purchase properties and are keen on all opportunities. Additionally, capital availability has eased and rental yields are improving due to increased rental prices. London is certainly a different entity to the UK, St John’s Wood being a fantastic multi-cultural area with a local, national and international market.

The only word to describe the market at the moment has to be ‘unpredictable’. As well as being hard to fathom, the market is extremely price sensitive as well. Due to a lack of property, central London prices are holding up. The only problem is some estate agents are over-valuing, because they desperately need stock on their books. Without it, they can’t operate, but there’s no point over-inflating prices – highlypriced property will just sit there. We take the view that we need to be realistic or we’re not really helping the vendor. If a home lingers on the market too long at too high a price, it appears there’s something wrong with it and it won’t shift. The ‘unpredictable’ factor also comes into play when some property sells quicker for no obvious reason. Recently, two flats of equal size and quality in the same building went on the market. One sold sharply at the asking price, while the other place didn’t move. There’s an element of finding the right buyer at the right time, and of course, the agent must market a home correctly, too. The problem is that vendors are normally about six months behind the market, which means they’ll only put their homes up for sale if they believe they’ll get what they want for them. While many over-value their homes, buyers are a lot more savvy - browsing property websites they can easily work out average values. We’re trying to educate sellers to be more level-headed and pragmatic. The end of the year will tell if stagnation between what the buyer is willing to pay and what the seller will accept starts to change. Realistic vendors and buyers together could banish the ‘unpredictable’, leading to a more rational and stable market.
