Dear Resident, February brings with it a whole host of happenings and, in light of London Fashion Week this month, we collate style tips from local designers and boutique owners (p.14), as well as preview Run the Beast Down, which is set to storm the stage at Finborough Theatre (p.8). Of course, Valentine’s Day looms large on the horizon and the Journal is here to dispel fears and offer some mental stimulation with our guide on how to spend the day in our very own SW6 from page 22. Elsewhere, on page 6 we take a look at a multi-million pound project which is set to launch at Fulham Palace and we also pay a visit to Drakes of Fulham (p.20) to receive a pampering. Finally, this month, gastronomic delights are unearthed at Italian restaurant Locale Fulham (p.13). Enjoy the issue!

Bishop

BONANZA The Journal finds out about a groundbreaking upcoming restoration project and exhibition at Fulham Palace – and receives an intriguing history lesson along the way WILLIAM MONROE

F

rom being one of the signatories of the Magna Carta, to reading the last rites to Charles I on the scaffold, the Bishops of London have been at the centre of British history since 704AD, wielding enormous influence from their river-side seat of power at Fulham Palace. Now funding has been raised to tell their story, in the form of the Discovering the Bishop of London’s Palace at Fulham exhibition. The project, which has been in the pipeline for several years, will see the restoration of the Tudor quadrangle and bring key historic rooms, such as the Great Hall, to life. Funding is provided by a grant of £1.88m from the Heritage Lottery Fund, while the Fulham Palace Trust has also managed to raise more than £1.2m in matched funding through foundations, corporates and individuals, with a target of £388,000 still to be raised. Siân Harrington, chief executive of the Fulham Palace Trust, explains that the Bishops of London undertook three roles that made them fundamentally important when it came to the nation’s

political and religious affairs. “There have been over 1000 Bishops since 704AD, so we can’t tell all of their stories. Instead, we will be highlighting some storylines to help people understand who the Bishops of London were and how they lived. We’ll have key bishops which will illustrate one of three themes: patron, pastor and politician.” As a patron, the Bishop of London was a wealthy individual, who was often engaged in redesigning the Palace and employing architects. As a politician he was technically the third most important bishop in the land, but frequently rose to the fore in times of political strife.

“When there was a weak Archbishop of Canterbury, he was often the most important bishop and very close to royalty living in London,” Siân explains. “He was involved in all of the major incidents in British history, from torturing prisoners in the Great Hall – which was Bishop Bonner – to reading the last rites to Charles I. As a pastor, the Bishop of London actually owned the whole of the borough of Hammersmith and Fulham as it is now, and was responsible for the spiritual health of his constituents. He was also the responsible bishop for the colonies including North America and the Caribbean. We’ll pick

explains. “So we’ve got a good idea of what plants were grown here: we’ll be bringing some of those back.” The project also incorporates a series of community archaeological digs, with the first one set to begin in October in an attempt to unearth the medieval dovecote, thought to be located in front of the Tudor entrance to the Palace. “There’s important archaeology buried here dating back to Roman and even Neolithic times,” Siân tells me. “There was a very exciting dig in the 1970s which found what seems to be a Neolithic offering. More recently we’ve run a number of community archaeology digs. We’ve found rare Roman coins, pottery and evidence of gardeners. The community archaeology is really exciting because not many sites in London are doing projects like this where members of the public can join in.” Matthew Bruce

key Bishops that help us tell these sorts of themes and stories.” Restorative work is set to start in October 2017 on the Tudor quadrangle, before building work begins in earnest in spring 2018. “The Tudor quadrangle is the last part of the Palace to be restored,” Siân tells me. “The previous two phases of restoration restored parts of the gardens and this part of the building we’re in now, which is the

Georgian section. That’s where the exhibition space will be, on the ground floor of the Tudor quadrangle. We hope to launch in May 2019.” One particularly intriguing aspect of the exhibition is the replanting project in the Botanical Gardens that will see the re-introduction of a number of historical varieties that were brought to the Palace by Bishop Compton – given the epithet of the ‘gardening Bishop’ because of his love of horticulture – in the late 17th century. Magnolia virginiana, believed to have been grown in Britain for the first time at Fulham Palace, will be one of the species that will be re-introduced. “There’s a herbarium at the Natural History Museum which contains material collected at Fulham Palace from Bishop Compton’s time here,” Siân

“The Bishops of London have been at the centre of British history since 704AD” Exciting times lie ahead for Fulham Palace, but Siân is keen to emphasise that the local community is very much a part of the project. “We don’t think that many people know how important the site was in the past as the home of the Bishops of London. We want to bring that story out so that people get a sense of the history. We’ve had lots of letters of support from local organisations. We want to involve local people in the fundraising and the project. We’re not asking people to donate hundreds of thousands of pounds; it’s more a contribution so that people feel they have been involved.” To find out more about the Discovering the Bishop of London’s Palace at Fulham exhibition, visit fulhampalace.org

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST The Journal sits down with the director of Run the Beast Down, a boundarypushing play that’s set to storm the stage at Finborough Theatre WILLIAM MONROE

Hannah Price, photo courtesy of Elizabeth Gibson

S

leep is a longed-for fantasy, he’s lost his job and girlfriend almost simultaneously and his neighbour’s cat has been dismembered. This is the situation that Charlie finds himself in as the protagonist of Run the Beast Down, a play written by Titas Halder and directed by Hannah Price that has been staged at Finborough Theatre since the end of last month. Hannah, who directed the critically acclaimed Boa starring Dame Harriet Walter, explains that collaboration with

is plagued by insomnia, and, believe it or not, foxes. “He starts to think the foxes are trying to take back the city,” Hannah tells me cryptically. “The script’s brilliant. There’s a rumbling feeling that something’s gone awry in the whole fabric of society; this suspicion that the world’s coming to some kind of end is very 2016!” The production is also unique as it incorporates a live electronic score by DJ and composer Chris Bartholomew. “The play’s got a very specific rhythm,” Hannah

(“it has really nice food”), while the recent tube strike also caused something of a stir for her and her team. “We worked out that between us we’d gone on a boat, a bus, a train, the underground, a bike, car and a taxi (I can’t resist interjecting with “swimming?” at this point). The play has heaps of travel in it, so we thought that was quite interesting, that we’d managed to traverse the whole of London!” “Exhilarating, surprising and intelligent,” is Hannah’s response after a considered pause when I ask her to encapsulate Run the Beast Down. Will the foxes really try and take over the city? Head along to Finborough Theatre to find out. In the meantime, however, this snippet from the script should be enough to whet thespian appetites: “When I looked up, I saw him. Burnt orange, bright against the summer woods. He stood grandly on all fours, the King.” Tickets start from £10, 118 Finborough Road, SW10 9ED, 0844 847 1652, performances run until 25 February, find out more at finboroughtheatre.co.uk Andy Tyler Photography

“The play encompasses a genre defying and exhilarating theatrical journey” Titas has been a key component. “Titas is also a director,” she laughs. “So I didn’t want to put on some kind of vision that wasn’t what he had. But it’s been very collaborative; hopefully he won’t get any nasty surprises!” The play encompasses a genre defying and exhilarating theatrical journey, exploring a sense of societal unease which is mirrored by the mindset of Charlie (played by Ben Aldridge), who

8

explains. “This electronic soundtrack building to a point was something I wanted to explore. There’s a very strong sense of city and being disconnected from natural things; the electronic element of the music is very important to help us establish that, drive the action and create Charlie’s emotional journey.” In-between rehearsals at the Dance Attic Studios in Fulham, Hannah’s found time to stop off at the popular Café Olé,

[INTERVIEW]

Grub’s up

The Journal finds out more about the brains behind Fulham’s children’s food delivery service, Piccolo Plates important to help parents who have busy schedules while making sure that their offspring eat nutritious meals that don’t have the huge quantities of salt and sugar that some ready meals can have.

my parents used to put into pretend planes, trains and monkeys in broccoli trees to get vegetables into my diet.

What process do you go through to come up with your meal ideas?

We love Santa Maria on New King’s Road. Cuckoo Hibou has brilliant children’s classes as well as having a great play area while the parents have a coffee and breather (but we are biased as our food is on the menu!).

We have a group of little tasters in Fulham who test out all our new dishes and critique. Children give very honest feedback which is exactly what we need. Left to right: Arabella Arkwright & Eleanor Sampson

Can you tell us what Piccolo Plates is and does? The company is a nutritious and healthy food delivery service, serving homemade dishes across London that are childfriendly, nutritious and delicious. Piccolo Plates helps remove the everyday hassle of cooking for children. Our dishes are sourced, cooked and delivered directly to your door by us.

Why did you specialise in children’s food? There is so much choice for adults to have food delivered in London and hardly any for children. We felt it was

12

What’s your favourite childhood food memory?

Eleanor: Making butter with my granny. She would give us a half pint tub of double cream and we would shake it until it turned to butter: genius children’s entertainment. Bella: I remember having eggy bread at teatime, soaking the bread in egg and then frying it.

What did you hate eating as a child?

Eleanor: I wasn’t a fussy eater, the only thing I didn’t like was yoghurt. It’s a firm favourite now though! Bella: I was actually quite fussy! It was a struggle to get me to eat vegetables. I dread to think how much energy

WHERE would you say are the best family-friendly places to eat in Fulham?

What are your connections to Fulham? Bella has lived here her whole life and I’ve been here for the past six years. We know the area, the mums, the schools and word of mouth has been the best way for us to get our name out. We’re now delivering more than 1,000 portions a month.

What ’s in store for Piccolo Plates this year? We are always experimenting with new dishes, with a vegetarian lasagne next on the list. We would also love to deliver puddings as well as our main dishes, so that we can cover both sweet and savoury courses. piccoloplates.com

LOCAL HERO

Locale Fulham is a must-visit Italian eatery in the area WILLiam MONROE

I

’ve got a good feeling about Locale Fulham from the moment my friend and I cross the threshold on a bitterly cold Wednesday evening. It’s warm inside, we’re greeted by the charming general manager Linn Hedblom and fresh focaccia and olives alongside Manhattan cocktails swiftly appear – and disappear – to whet our appetite (and thirst).

“It capitulates beautifully in the face of my voracious onslaught” We declare for our starters and I opt for the salt and pepper squid, while my friend chooses a salmon gravlax with Scandinavian dill, mustard sauce and toasted sourdough. The squid is perfectly cooked in a light, crispy batter with a delicious garlic mayonnaise, and my friend is similarly effusive in her praise when it comes to her choice. As we finish our starters the restaurant gradually begins to fill up, with the local Italian patrons seemingly favouring a slightly later eating time than their English counterparts. Our mains arrive soon afterwards, accompanied by a bottle of Castello di Monastero Chianti Classico with notes of wild strawberries and cherries

that is selected for us to match with our mains by the knowledgeable and attentive Linn. We’ve both opted for the house speciality, Hibachi Steak, which is grilled and sliced rib eye in a sweet and spicy soy sauce with sesame seeds and seasonal vegetables. It’s really excellent; perfectly cooked (I ordered mine medium rare) and tender so that it capitulates beautifully in the face of my voracious onslaught. A spicy kick is offset nicely by the sweet sauce and al dente vegetables, and we’re also enamoured with the house coleslaw, Winter Slaw, which is something of a taste sensation in its own right. We’re both in agreement that it’s some of the best steak we’ve eaten in a long

time and dessert is arguably on a similar level. My friend tackles the tiramisu and I turn my attentions to an amaretto panna cotta with orange sauce which is light and finishes off the meal wonderfully. We’ve spent well over two hours enjoying the excellent food and drink on offer, but there’s still room left for a glass of traditional limoncello – it’s excellent for the digestion ostensibly but we don’t need an excuse – before we call time on our food fiesta. The cuisine at Locale Fulham was excellent, our servers were charming and the atmosphere and décor was first rate. I’ll certainly be back. 222 Munster Road, SW6 6AY, 020 7381 6137, localefulham.com

Fulham

fashion week With London Fashion Week (17-21 February) set to swathe the city in a sea of style, we get trend tips and thoughts from some of Fulham’s fashion moguls william monroe

them feel fabulous and gives them the confidence to carry off the occasion. With the right proportion and colour match to an outfit there is a headpiece out there to suit every client. What seasonal styles do you expect for 2017? Flowers, feathers and bows are timeless and these classic feminine embellishments are always popular. I also expect veiling and organic abstract shapes to feature more prominently in hat design for 2017 than in recent years. What are the most unusual Ascot hat requests you’ve had? A heart-shaped box filled with chocolates or a Ferrari teetering on the edge of a Martini glass! Are hats slipping out of fashion when it comes to everyday wear? Formal hats are still very much in demand

What trends are going to be popular for SS17? Statement sleeves will be popular – think ruffles, flutes, cropped, and bunched – anything goes this season. Yellow is this season’s must-have hue, while utility chic will also be big – the military trend is here to stay. Think khaki, toffee, caramel but in practical shapes and wearable fashion. Fashion’s obsession with shoulders rages on for SS17, expect shoulder cut-outs in the form of dresses, knits and tops.

for special occasions such as weddings and the races. However, more casual style hats such as the trilby, cloche and beret are still as popular as ever especially in the winter months. Siggi Hats, 48 Fulham High Street, SW6 3LQ, 020 7736 2030, siggihats.co.uk

14

What are your go-to wardrobe items? Jeans will always be a staple and my current favourite are this season’s new crop flare, which are very flattering on all shapes. A cashmere knit from Duffy is also a favourite

What do you like most about being based in Fulham? Fulham is a busy area but has a real village feel and a great atmosphere. There’s an abundance of great coffee shops and so many good independent stores opening – the Fulham Road now has everything you need. What makes a great ladies hat?

Will you be attending London Fashion Week? London comes alive with the buzz of Fashion Week and many brands will show their collections in spaces around London – I’ll be making a beeline for some of them to view and buy for March’s AW17 collection. It’s always so exciting to see what’s in store for next season.

[LIFESTYLE] ESSAM GUENEDY MANAGING DIRECTOR OF ESSAM GUENEDY BOUTIQUE What are your favourite trends for SS17? I find that the return of the dress is paramount for SS17; the fashion for separates has passed. The tube dress in particular – as worn so effectively by Melania Trump – is the garment that takes a sophisticated lady from dawn to dusk. Are there any trends you dislike? I find gym wear totally unacceptable other than in the gym! What’s in your latest collection? For SS17, the highlight of my collection is the structured dress (tube) teamed with a bolero, short or long jacket. There is a focus on bold colours and block print, as we all need lots of positive energy in a climate of rapid changes and uncertainties. What do you like about the local area? I am lucky to be in Fulham and am based very near to The Hurlingham Club, which is a hub of activity. Fulham is becoming very cosmopolitan and this is strongly reflected in my choice of each collection. Essam Guenedy Boutique, 273 New King’s Road, SW6 4RD, 020 7751 3348, essamguenedy.com

ANTONIA PUGH-THOMAS DESIGNER AND DRESS-MAKER What is your business all about? I am an haute couturier and designer who makes bespoke pieces for private clients. All my customers are women, but that is where the generalisation ends: we work for every shape and size, making anything from tailored trouser suits to evening dresses for inaugural balls at The White House. How closely do you pay attention to fashion and trends? I’m aware of contemporary fashion and trends and conscious of the season’s colours, but I don’t follow them slavishly. I prefer to interpret ideas from the catwalk and make them work on my clients. is there a particular type of woman that your brand attracts? Our clients come to us from all over Great Britain and Europe and we also have repeat customers who fly from the US and Japan. We attract high-powered women who have busy lives and need to have a wardrobe that works for many different occasions. We work regularly with members of the aristocracy, female High Sheriffs and Lord Lieutenants and ambassadors, as well as politicians and wellknown businesswomen.

Where does inspiration for your designs come from? On a prosaic level, my inspiration comes from watching people out and about and noticing details: an interesting cuff here, a dramatic collar there. I also spend time in the V&A looking at their ever-changing fashion collections. Often a client will sow the seed and I will make it a reality. [NEWS]

It’s winter time, which means everyone’s skin is really parched. I find this is even more true for men, as they generally don’t moisturise and often wash their face with bar soap. It can end up feeling a little bit like sandpaper. If I put them on a very simple home care regime they usually see results quite quickly. My male clients are good listeners, so it’s just about teaching them what they’re not doing, or what’s missing, as well as getting them on a skincare programme that’s suited to them specifically. They will almost always see results. I think it’s much harder for men as culturally it’s not seen as a particularly masculine thing to do. Men don’t always grow up knowing how to care for their skin, so when I do my consultations I spend quite a bit of time teaching them how to actually care for their skin, and why it’s so important. I always teach them about how the skin functions scientifically, and why what they’re doing is compromising its healthiness. Once I do that, I treat the skin. Men are not usually used to having someone touch their face, or put many different products on their skin, so their first treatment can be a strange experience. But once they come in, I put them at ease, and they become some of my best clients. My treatments are completely results-driven, so they’re often very easy clients to fix because their skincare ‘regime’ usually means they have only cleansed with bar soap. 793 Fulham m

[BEAUTY REVIEW]

The one and only The Journal falls in love with the Drakes of London Valentine’s Day Package WillIAM Monroe

W

hen it comes to love, the saying absence makes the heart grow fonder couldn’t be truer and it’s fair to say that as I leave Drakes of London’s Fulham branch after experiencing their Valentine’s Day Package that I’m already yearning for a return. Drakes of Fulham features a barbershop downstairs and an upstairs beauty complex. I’m here on a Thursday afternoon to try the 90-minute Valentine’s Day Package consisting of a 30-minute full body, scalp, hand and arm, or leg and foot massage and a 60-minute facial featuring a shoulder and scalp massage.

It’s on to the facial and a lifetime of neglect means that my skin is in a sorry state As I’m extremely ticklish the prospect of a full body massage fills me with dread, so I opt for a leg and foot massage to kick proceedings off. My therapist Josette begins her expert kneading and I can already feel my eyelids growing heavy amidst the candlelit semi-darkness and soothing music. After half an hour, it’s on to the facial and a lifetime of neglect means that my skin is in a sorry state. It’s dry and the pores around my nose are blocked – but luckily Josette is here to sort things out. She starts with a cleansing face wash, various

Good posture is as important as eating right, exercising and getting a good night’s sleep. What is my posture like? Is it good? Is it bad? These are questions that I am often asked. We have to work hard at becoming aware of how we move and make subtle changes. The goal shouldn’t be a dramatic change in how we hold ourselves, rather reduced pain, improved function and a decreased likelihood of posture getting worse. Changing the way we present ourselves to the world is going to take more than stretching and strengthening a few muscles. This is because our posture is an expression of ourselves: our genes, our upbringing, our emotions and a lifetime of experiences.

exfoliating creams are applied and the steam is turned on to open up my pores. Hot towels are applied before Josette plays her trump card, a special cream which she tells me will bring the toxins in my skin to the surface before she extracts the build-up. By the time the shoulder and scalp massage rolls around, I’m practically unconscious and it all gets a bit blurry. A cooling face mask is applied which is a welcome contrast to the heat of the steam and towels, before Josette finishes the treatment with another leg massage. Such is the relaxation, I briefly nod off, catching myself mid-snore and re-joining humanity just as the treatment ends. Josette furnishes me with a Dermalogica skincare kit as a parting gift before my lethargy induces me to catch the wrong train: I’m heading for Edgware Road before I realise my mistake. It’s safe to say Drakes’ Valentine’s Day Package came up trumps – an average Thursday afternoon this certainly was not.

I think the posture concerns that many of us have stem from the messages drummed into us during childhood: “Stand up straight”, “Pull your tummy in and push your shoulders back”. The badgering we got as kids however is justified, because posture is much more adaptable in children. While kids’ bones and muscles are still growing, their posture and habits will influence their posture as an adult. As adults however, rather than worrying excessively about changing our posture, perhaps it would be better to focus on not having a fixed posture at all. By that I mean focus on moving more often, and not sitting or standing for hours on end. This outlook would be far better for our health, our bodies and our sense of well-being.

designing deity The Journal talks to Rachel Winham, the interior designer of Barratt London’s Townhouse Collection at Fulham Riverside show home, about the project and her inspiration What inspired you to go into the field of interior design? I would often redesign my bedroom as a child and would move furniture around for a fresh look! After a move to the Caribbean in 2006 at the age of 21, I met a designer who opened my eyes to the world of interiors and my career began. I was quickly exposed to top-end luxury design and I never looked back. What’s the inspiration behind the show home design? The location warrants interiors that are fun and fresh. London is such a vibrant city; there is so much going on and so much to take in. We really wanted to reflect that in our schemes and the overall design of the townhouse. We’ve had fun with colour and pattern to create a refreshing departure from the urban background of the city. What was the most challenging aspect of the design process? The layout was our biggest challenge as there were multiple uses for the ground floor. We opted for a games room which feels like you have just stepped into a cosy hangout in New York’s Soho District. What was your favourite room to design as part of the project? The open plan dining/snug area; it’s a room of many functions. It’s the place where you can relax with the kids on a Sunday evening or gather around the kitchen island with a glass of wine catching up with friends. What’s your best project from the past? It has to be my first project when I started my company. The brief was to dress a two-bedroom show home with an incredibly low budget in a very tight

26

time frame – I worked day and night until the successful completion. What’s the hardest part of being an interior designer? Most people believe the role of an interior designer is purely creative when, in reality, it’s probably 10 per cent creative and 90 per cent problem solving! The design is the easy part, the procurement and production process is where the challenges can arise. And the best part? Producing designs that both we and our clients love. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing months of hard work come together and a space come to life. What’s next for Rachel Winham Interior Design? In December we had the opening of our showroom, and we will shortly be launching our new Design Works service. With a baby on the way as well, 2017 is bound to be an exciting year! To find out more about Rachel Winham Interior Design call 020 7443 5511 or visit rachelwinham.com. on the market The Journal spotlights a £12.3m loan from The Hampshire Trust Bank to Boxblue (SPV) that will help fund a new residential scheme on Lillie Road

T

he Hampshire Trust Bank has provided a £12.3m loan to fund a new 30-unit residential scheme in Fulham. The sum was lent to Boxblue (SPV) to help with the acquisition of the site on Lillie Road, following an introduction by SPF Private Clients. The existing block is to be demolished and replaced with a new iteration delivering a mix of one, two and threebed apartments with 18 underground parking spaces and a gross development value of £22m.

David Alcock, deputy managing director of Property Finance at Hampshire Trust Bank, said: “We are delighted to be supporting this highquality development which will transform a redundant site into a very attractive and well planned residential apartment scheme. The borrower is a professional property developer with a number of successful projects already under their belts. We look forward to working with them again in the future.” Simon Blakebrough of Boxblue said: “We are very pleased to be working with

Hampshire Trust Bank to deliver a high quality development which we aim to have on the market towards the middle of 2017.” Daniel O’Neil of SPF Private Clients said: “The teamwork from all parties was excellent in this challenging market with special praise reserved for Hampshire Trust Bank for their seamless deal execution.”
