Titanic Exhibition The Titanic exhibition London event taking place at The O2 Arena is set to be one of the most historically significant exhibitions in the history of the ill-fated liner to date. With more than 300 artefacts from the ship itself and several recreations of rooms on board, fans of the Titanic’s history are in for a real treat. The event takes place from Friday 5 November 2010 to Sunday 1 May 2011.

This wonderful serene area has so many charming homes to offer and, with some of the best schools around, it naturally attracts families. Some of the priciest properties are on the very upmarket and prestigious Cator Estate – a fabulous array of Victorian houses. More affordable options come in the guise of the über-trendy and innovative Span estate, designed by Eric Lyons back in the 1960s. Houses on the Span Estate were basically modernist developments that ingeniously
incorporated elements from the English garden suburb idea to create low-rise housing in lushly landscaped gardens. Shooters Hill is one of the most sought-after roads in the Blackheath area. The old town houses are stunning and actually deceptively large once inside. They overlook a bit of the heath and are in close walking distance of public transport. If you want some greenery, and you don’t mind being on a main road, then this place is certainly worth considering.
If you’re new to the area and yet to discover the fabulous selection of restaurants in Blackheath, then you are in for a treat. Chapter Two was opened in Blackheath Village in 1998. In 2008, it was restyled as Chapters All Day Dining, after undergoing an extensive refurbishment. You can pop in for a cup of coffee, or enjoy a sumptuous threecourse meal. Chapters are the proud holders of a Michelin Bib Gourmand and two AA Rosettes, and a Christmas menu is now available.

Something for nothing When something says it’s free, is it really? Hilton Ingram from Heath Estates spouts forth…
I
am a natural sceptic, so when I hear the phrase ‘free telecoms’ or ‘free internet’, I naturally feel that someone somewhere is paying for it, and it is probably me. When Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone in 1876, I would be surprised if he could have imagined the direction in which the telecommunications industry has taken his invention. My first mobile was ten inches high, ten inches wide and four inches deep. It had a separate handset that plugged into a block of electronics, which then attached to a very large battery. I could stand in the pub with this large brick on the bar and ‘be in when I was out’, as they say. Everyone was very impressed; however, this came with a downside, which was the cost. The rental and phone calls were approximately £1,500 per month for each phone. For a similar rental and phone usage nowadays it costs less than £10 per month. I could dismantle my phone and put it in the car where it became a Class 1 handset, which meant that any passing birds getting close to the little stubby car aerial became a bit frazzled, whilst also losing a few brain cells. Today’s handsets are Class 4 or Class 5, which means the birds just get a little tickle whilst passing. The latest craze is to put four phones close together, pointing towards a piece of popcorn, and then to invite four friends to call the phones at the same time to see the popcorn dance (as seen on YouTube). Who said mobile phone aerials are safe? When the mobile phone companies started to build their network of transmission aerials, optical cable and satellites, the few people who could afford the cost of a call were the ones who helped fund the nowworldwide coverage of phone networks. Since the early days, the cost of calls have continued to drop in line with the increased number of phone users, but now with the advent of VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) it is possible to talk whilst linked via the internet. This offers a much lower cost – some calls are actually free – however, access to
the internet is required at each end of the call. Modern mobile phones are now starting to offer this facility and therefore are getting closer to the boast of ‘free telecoms’, even if you have to pay more than eight pence per minute for the internet connection needed to actually use your ‘free’ facility. When the internet was in its infancy, there were companies that offered to handle the link to the internet. Commonly known as internet service providers (ISPs), these companies would make their money from charging a monthly or annual fee. But some of these companies offered this service for free, and they made their money from the financial kickback that they would receive from the phone companies as the access to the internet is via a phone line, which always costs money. So, the moral of this story is that when someone says something is free, it’s most likely that it isn’t, because somebody somewhere is paying for the call. n
