Farmers Market Blackheath farmers’ market, offering a tantalizing selection of fresh produce is located in the car park of Blackheath rail station and takes place every Sunday. As befits a market that’s been established for many years it seems as if everyone knows the farmers by name. It’s very much a social gathering, with customers queuing patiently whilst waiting for the market bell to ring! Every Sunday 10–2pm.
Blackheath Society Tackling a common problem on our streets, The Blackheath Societies Graffiti Removal Team is made up of Society members who volunteer to tackle the problem rather than sit back and moan. The more volunteers, the more we can achieve. The Graffiti Removal team meet on the first Saturday of each month. Call 020 8297 1937 for more information or to get involved.
Market Overview Image courtesy of: Shannon Sheridan, Sheridan Interior Photography
With its glorious Georgian and Victorian houses and quaint boutique shops surrounded by some of the loveliest leafy green streets and open spaces, Blackheath really is one location that has it all. Developed as a prosperous residential suburb from the late 17th century, London Bridge is only 10 minutes from Blackheath by train and yet most of the residents would agree that it’s almost like living in an upmarket country village. Local Estate Agents have experienced an entourage of families in the last few
years arriving in their drones from Canary Wharf and the like, looking for family houses, great schools and county style living but without the commute, naturally Blackheath ticks all the boxes and more. With Greenwich Park and the Heath both so close by, who wouldn’t want to relocate their family there. There are so many desirable roads within the location Kidbrooke Park, Bennett Park and Coleraine Road all being sought after locations commanding price tags to match.
“Heath Estates in Blackheath has had a consistently good year this year which only really quietened down about two months ago and it looks like Christmas may have come a bit early. Media speculation has obviously played a key part in affecting buyer’s confidence. We are still seeing offers come through and vendors are now educated that it’s unlikely they will reach asking price in this market as prices have moved down a tad. However we are confidently looking to January 2011 when we are sure to see prices realigning.” Danielle Lawes, Heath Estates

PROPERTY NEWS
Perfect timing Hilton Ingram from Heath estates asks: is now the best time to invest in property?
I
f I were a betting man I would bet on the fact that, at this moment in time, property prices will either stay as they are or increase. This assumption seems quite sound, based upon the proviso that another global disaster does not befall us. However, if we wait for the next global disaster we will achieve nothing and so we must look at ways of realising our property goals within a difficult market place. After the last World War people saved for a rainy day - because it rained a lot. Saving was a way of life which our parents used with great effect: we are now the benefactors of their hard work and hard saving as they pass on their estate to their children. The children, however, have lived in boom years and have not acquired their parents’ saving ethic. Coupled with exposure to easy credit, this has created a ‘live today and forget tomorrow’ culture. Saving plays a major part in the purchase of properties and without access to money, which has been saved by somebody, we cannot progress through the property market. People today have substantially more disposable income than their predecessors but most choose not to spend their money on savings which leaves parents, who have the savings, helping their children. Wouldn’t it be better to teach our children the value of saving instead of spending? Even our government is now encountering the problems of spend or save. Most of us can see that if the coalition manages to stay together without too much infighting, and the austere measures that are currently being put in place are not too damaging in the long run, then within very few years the UK will be, financially speaking, one of the strongest countries in the world. This can only be good for the
16
savings and property markets which should improve in line with the volume of green shoots that will appear over the next few years. So is now the best time to invest in property? If you have access to savings then the answer must be YES. In our parents’ day buying a home was substantially more difficult than it is today: previously, in addition to a perfect credit history, proof of income, proof of accommodation, meeting correct legislation and choosing the right mortgage provider, you still needed a deposit. And without access to credit, savings proved to be the only way to raise funds, which needed time. Nowadays access to money can be quick and comes in all shapes and sizes, making it easier to buy property, but for those looking to buy in the current market it has become tougher due to conditions imposed by the lenders. It is fair to say that for those who have savings, more flexibility and less conditions will make it easier to own your own home. n For more information please contact Hilton Ingram at Heath Estates on 020 8463 9955

With its superb mix of both period and new build property and array of museums, galleries, architecture, maritime history, parks and palaces, Greenwich has something for everyone. The housing in Greenwich is fairly similar throughout and generally quite expensive. Streets are often quite leafy in comparison to some other areas of London. The areas around the park and town centre include lots of attractive largish houses, a few of which have been converted into selfcontained flats. Greenwich Park is one of the Royal Parks like Hyde Park and Regents Park. It has lots of
trees, rolling slopes and is a major attraction all year round. Many developers have seen the potential in Greenwich for obvious reasons, and aimed at reinventing Greenwich by a series of modern developments breaking the mould in an area that has always been known for beautiful period architecture. West Greenwich is considered to be the most desirable and expensive area, with highly sought after attractive period homes. Croom’s Hill and the surrounding roads feature Georgian houses, and the Ashburnham Triangle is popular, featuring flat-fronted early Victorian properties.
Wimbledon may be over but for those tennis fans amongst you the world’s best tennis player’s return to Greenwich this November as the O2 arena stages the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals for a second time. The tournament pits the top eight men from the last year against each other. The Finals run from 21-28 November with an afternoon and evening session each day.
Arts and Crafts Forget the usual stress of high street shopping and indulge in something unique. Greenwich market is home to one of the most vibrant arts and crafts markets in London. Enjoy the continental food court whilst browsing through the wonderful array of over 120 arts and craft stalls. Wed - Sun 10am -5.30pm.

DULWICH
History of Dulwich
Image courtesy of: Shannon Sheridan, Sheridan Interior Photography
Dulwich is an exclusive village hidden within the borough of Southwark, with charming houses, open parks and green spaces. The busy main road, now called Dulwich Village, was, and still is, the High Street of the village of Dulwich. If you stand outside the Old College and look up the street you can see that Dulwich is still more like a village than most places this close to London. The Village contains the original shopping street and still contains nearly all of its original 18th and 19th century buildings. It
remains uncommercial and is a conservation zone. Beautiful trees and green grass line the road. There are small shops and an old signpost and milestone. Not far away are fields and woods. Dulwich is, in fact, one of the oldest recorded villages in London. Now that it is a built-up area it is difficult to picture the lie of the land which might have attracted its first residents. Dulwich and East Dulwich cover a fertile valley between hills, Denmark Hill and Dog Kennel Hill to the north, Sydenham Hill and One Tree Hill, Honor Oak, to the south.
What was life like in Dulwich hundreds of years ago? It was a quiet place then, just a few houses in the midst of fields. People worked in the fields growing corn that was ground into flour at the mill. One Dulwich mill, set up by Edward Alleyn, was where Dulwich College now stands. The pond across the road is still called the Mill Pond. It was a post-mill; the sails were mounted on a post which could be turned according to the wind. Dulwich Common is now only the name of a busy main road, part of the South Circular, but, until it was enclosed in 1805, the common was a wide open space; land where sheep and cows could graze.
The Picture Gallery The Tate may draw the crowds, but art lovers are well served in Dulwich. The Picture Gallery on College Road houses an extremely impressive collection with works by Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Rubens and Gainsborough. On 18 November, Artist David Gentleman will be signing his DPG/ Friends Christmas card, an exquisite watercolour of his snowbound Suffolk garden, in the gallery.

Borough Market If you have not yet discovered the joy of Borough Market, London’s most renowned food market, you are in for a complete treat. Since its renaissance as a retail market just over a decade ago, it has become a haven for anybody who cares about the quality and provenance of the food they eat. The market is populated by a community of remarkable individuals from all over the UK, Europe and the rest of the world, all of whom care deeply about the food and drink on offer. Many of the stallholders are themselves producers – people who grow, rear or bake the food that they sell.
The Turner Prize

SE1 is the most colossal anomaly in London. Whereas the rest of the City centre has been subdivided within its postcodes, SE1 remains seemingly too large for the important areas it covers. A quirky eclectic architectural mix of new and old property, SE1 is becoming an increasingly popular place to live and it’s easy to see why. Transport links to The City, the West End and the rest of London are excellent and there is a palpable buzz in the air created by the burgeoning arts scene, an influx of young people and the ongoing regeneration plans. A range of property is available from loft conversions in the Alaska Buildings, new flats around the Spa Gardens and
spacious terraced houses in the streets south of Southwark Park road around Thorburn Square. Strata SE1, a new development, is the tallest residential building in central London. Developed by Brookfield Europe it comprises 408 high quality apartments in two architecturally prestigious buildings both with space for shops and restaurants below. Setting new standards in sustainable living, Strata SE1 is the first development in the world where wind turbines have been integrated into the fabric of the building. Strata SE1 proudly sits in the heart of the £1.5 billion regeneration area of Elephant and Castle.
The Turner Prize, now in its 26th year, is arguably the world’s most recognised and prestigious award for contemporary art. The prize is awarded to an artist under fifty, born, living or working in Britain, for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation in the twelve months. Get down to the Tate Modern to check out the four shortlists for this year’s prize.
Shad Thames One of the most commonly known parts of SE1 is the splendid Shad Thames. With its quaint narrow streets and fabulous riverside location it just oozes sophistication. Soak up the atmosphere from one of the fabulous array of restaurants overlooking the glorious Tower Bridge on the River Thames.

OUT&ABOUT Enter a magical world Salvator Rosa (1615-1673) was one of the boldest and most powerfully inventive artists and personalities of the Italian 17th century. He invented new types of painting: allegorical pictures, distinguished by a haunting and melancholy poetry; fanciful portraits of romantic and enigmatic figures; macabre and horrific subjects; philosophical subjects, which bring into
painting some of the major philosophical and scientific concerns of his age. This new exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery brings together some of his most important work. The exhibition runs until 28 November. www.dulwichpicturegallery.org.uk 020 8693 5254 Gallery Road, SE21 7A

Kevin will be joined by the Mayor of Lewisham, Sir Steve Bullock, and the Mayor of Greenwich, Cllr Barbara Barwick. The Salvation Army brass band will play in the middle of the village from 3pm, followed by the Blackheath Halls Community Choir at 4pm. Botton’s Family Funfair will be situated on the heath, at the top of the village and operating between 12 – 6pm on both Saturday and Sunday. 4 & 5 December www.blackheathlights.co.uk Box office: 020 8463 0100 Blackheath, Greenwich, Dulwich, SE1
OUT & ABOUT IMAX Harry potter and the Deathly Hallows The first instalment of final book from Harry Potter hits our screens on 19 November, but the only screen you and your little wizards will want to see it on is the 20m high IMAX – that’s the height of five double-decker buses! A full 3D experience means you’ll feel like you’re right there with Harry and his friends as they fight dementors, discover ancient prophesies and go on incredible adventures. Take the whole family to the theatre Running until 13 November is the classic Gilbert and Sullivan satire Patience. Parodying frenzied female fans and the unscrupulous objects of their adulation in 1880s, the musical follows the antics of arch-poseur Reginald Bunthorne who attracts hordes of female admirers with his pretentious poetry and languid demeanour, but lusts after Patience, the village milkmaid, who remains immune to his ‘charms’. Can he tempt her to take a walk on the Wilde side? Then on 25 November, reuniting the team behind sell-out hits Mother Goose and Jack and the Beanstalk, comes children’s classic, Cinderella. A gorgeous performance with classic characters and new twists! Greenwich Theatre www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk
WIN TICKETS TO CINDERELLA! The annual Greenwich Theatre pantomime has fast become the capital’s must-see Christmas show, and Greenwich favourite Andrew Pollard is certainly the funniest pantomime dame on the circuit, so it can be no surprise that for Cinderella this year the team at the theatre has already added an extra week of performances to meet demand. We have teamed up with the theatre to offer three lucky readers the chance to win a family ticket (for up to four people) to see the show. To be in with a chance of winning, email your name, address and telephone number to competitions@runwildgroup.co.uk with CINDERELLA in the subject line. The closing date for entries is Tuesday 30 November 2010. Terms & conditions: The first three entries drawn will win the prizes. Prize is subject to availability. The editor’s decision is final and no correspondence can be entered into.

The Ultimate
WINTER warmer Sara Uzel meets Daniel Sanders from Modus Design and finds out why no home is complete without a fireplace centrepiece
Model 997
M
odus Design has been at the cutting edge of fireplace design since 1986; bringing innovative design to the concept of the ‘traditional hearth fireplace’ Modus creates inspirational and contemporary functional objects of art that incorporate glass, stone and moulded metal. Focusing on visual impact, their creations embody both form and function in equal measure. Making a bold design statement in any living space, Modus has developed a truly distinctive collection that includes dramatic suspended fireplaces, transparent two-sided glass-to-ceiling fireplaces, corner features, sculptured on-the-wall fireplaces and outdoor table fires. All the fireplaces in the collections can be tweaked and tailored to the individual, thus creating a truly bespoke and personalised product; project managed by professional design consultants, on a case-by-case basis, each order considers the space, taste and lifestyle of clients. From the ultra-modern, urban living space to traditional or period homes, Modus Design has worked on some of the UK’s most prestigious properties, including the homes of premiership footballers, A-list celebrities and world famous architects. We asked designer Daniel Sanders to tell us a little more about why Modus stands out from the crowd...
What does Modus Design provide that other fireplace companies do not? First and foremost our fireplace collection is
INTERIORS
TOP 3 DESIGNS THE LINEFIRE
unique. The concept that underlies all of our designs, and that separates us from other fireplace companies, is that our fireplaces are intended to be unique designer pieces of furniture, as well as fully functioning fireplaces. A fireplace isn’t lit for most of the year so why have a hole in the wall when you can have a beautiful, sculptured focal feature for 365 days? Secondly, all designs are completely bespoke and can be 100% customised to suit individual taste, situation and lifestyle – from dimensions to colour schemes, materials to finishes. Essentially, no two fireplaces that we make and design are the same. We aim to provide a product that is exceptionally high in design and manufacture to suit individuals who have a discerning taste for luxury.
How do you ensure each fireplace is ‘bespoke and personalised’? The way to achieve the best results and satisfy the needs of the individual is to try and understand as much about them and their lifestyle. Therefore, our design consultants work directly with clients, their interior designers and/or architects in situ – this is the best way to fully appreciate the space in question and to propose the best design solution. Once a design consultant has met on site, he or she will be able to put together 3D design imagery to allow clients to visualise how different designs will look.
What initially attracted you to contemporary fireplace design? I had worked for some prestigious brands in different industry sectors prior to joining Modus Design. I was excited by the opportunity to work in a real niche industry and for a company that had been successful in taking ‘the fireplace’ – what is traditionally seen as an unsexy product – and turn it into a real object of desire with true design aesthetics. Working at the luxury end of the market also has its attractions, not least the opportunity to work in some exclusive properties but also the design freedom that luxury affords.
How successful has Modus Design been since it was established? I guess it depends on how you judge
success. I look at it in two different ways. The first is being successful in terms of industry recognition. There is no greater accolade than working alongside the likes of world renowned interior designers or architects such as Candy & Candy, Kelly Hoppen and Foster & Partners. Secondly, I value success in terms of client satisfaction – we’ve yet to leave one customer unsatisfied, so we must be doing something right!
A feature fireplace of traditional shape with a contemporary twist, this design has a bold elegance. The design pictured incorporates an impressive 2.6 metre flame.
Which clients and properties are you most proud of working for? We were asked to design and supply two fireplaces for the private penthouse of one of the greatest architects of modern times - the individuality of the designs and the demands of the job itself was certainly something for us to be proud of.
THE 186-01
This beautiful cylindrical free hanging fireplace with glass canopy allows all round vision of the fire. The curved glass and silver reflections, combined with the fire, creates a unique and visually impressive design. There are a number of materials and colours to choose from.
What type of materials do you use and how do you source them? Our fireplaces incorporate a whole host of materials and we are always looking to incorporate new materials into our designs. The basic elements are metal, glass and stone but we also work with some unusual materials that you wouldn’t normally associate with a fireplace, such as leather. We have a suspended fireplace in our collection that has a leather base which serves almost as a piece of furniture. Materials are sourced from all over the world, including Japan for unique fire resistant glass, Italy for stone and marble, and Germany for high quality metal.
How do you ensure Modus Design continually has a unique fireplace collection? Innovation is the name of the game. We are constantly looking to create distinctive installations and push the boundaries of what’s possible in fireplace design. We work closely with our counterparts in Holland who are responsible for manufacture and who are experts at taking our concepts and turning them into reality. Keeping up to date with trends in interior design and architecture, as well as the more general fashion trends that influence our taste and lifestyle helps ensure our designs are ‘on-trend’. We’re about to launch the world’s first waterfall fire, so watch this space... n
THE 984
This design has a highly unique form that mixes different metals and finishes to create a truly stunning focal piece. The main body is made from corten steel which provides a rusted look alongside the flue and fire bowl made from stainless steel. The body can be used as seating or as ornamental display. Prices, for design conception to installation, start at £4,500. Modus Design 020 8906 9988 www.modusfireplaces.com

Designer Focus Camerich
Camerich began life as a furniture manufacturer in 1997 with the goal of providing quality, practical design at reasonable prices. The company’s philosophy has always been to meet and exceed customer expectation at every level. The combination of 100 own-branded retail outlets across 40 countries and in-house design, development and manufacture allow the company a direct line from consumer to design studio to factory-floor. The resulting product range offers contemporary design that is practical, affordable and of the highest quality. Owner Rowen Meehan has over ten years experience in the modern furniture industry and before joining Camerich, his experience of ultra-modern furniture had always been that it was costprohibitive and offered little to the average customer who was design-savvy, but still wanted a product they could actually use. He agreed with the classic designer Charles Eames – “we want to make the best, for the most, for the least” – and set about putting that philosophy into practice. The products he designs and develops with Camerich attempt to bring modern design back to the realms of real life – in terms of both practicality and affordability – but without compromise on look or quality. The ever popular Casa Sofa range brings clean lines, chunky features and unrivalled comfort to the homes of the UK market. The modular nature of the range allows the customer to create their perfect combination. www.camerich.co.uk

THE ADDRESS BOOK This month Sim Smith seeks out some of Elizabeth Street’s best little shops
Grosvenor Stationery Company Perfectly situated, there’s no missing the royal blue façade of this must-visit little stationery shop. Through the window, passersby can see a myriad of contemporary colours on show in the form of correspondence cards and invitations. Inside, the shop design is simple, a space dedicated to its product and service. Whether you’re looking for invitation inspiration for a special occasion, or something a bit more low key, the Grosvenor Stationery Company really is a great place to start. The products tend to fall into two areas: ‘Write & Go’ boxed stationery, which you can buy off the shelf or ‘Social Stationary’, custom-ordered pieces ranging from everyday cards to invitations. If the latter appeals to you, the company offers a consultation service with specialist staff, who are able to take you through the design process from start to finish. With a rare coupling of traditional engraving and die-stamping and the use of new contemporary colour schemes and luxuriously heavyweight board and papers, the Grosvenor Stationery Company is leading the way in making correspondence cool again. 47 Elizabeth Street, 020 7730 4515, www.grosvenorstationerycompany.com
Mungo & Maud Inside the pale grey exterior of this period property lives Mungo & Maud, dog and cat outfitters par excellence. An old, reclaimed wooden table takes centre stage with small zinc buckets and knitted toys thoughtfully positioned on its surface. To the left, thick wooden shelves stacked ceiling-high house porcelain water bowls and dog treats in linen bags made to Mungo & Maud’s own recipe. Along from these canine culinary delights, stylish merino wool jumpers and hand-stitched leather collars sit alongside a very elegant grooming range, boasting such delights as oatmeal shampoo and eau de toilette pour chien. With an emphasis on natural materials and tactile fabrics, these well-designed, chic accessories prove the perfect complement to any contemporary home, ensuring a stylish life all round. 79 Elizabeth Street, 020 7022 1208 www.mungoandmaud.com
Tomtom Founded in 1997, Tomtom Cigars has become one of London’s leading cigar merchants with a reputation for bringing the very best of Cuba to the slightly drearier streets of London. The entire shop exudes cool Cuban charm from the whirling ceiling fan above, to the laidback staff and the distinct smell of sweet tobacco that wafts onto the street outside. The company has the highest classification from Habanos, the Cuban Cigar Authority, as a Specialist in Havanas, not to mention the seal of approval from their local council, City of Westminster, as a Havana Specialist – which allows them the very rare privilege of offering cigar tasting to their customers. Yes, you can actually smoke in here! Tomtom also stocks a wonderful range of accessories for the cigar aficionado from humidors to cigar cutters, and even boasts a super-cool range of Havana Club brand ashtrays in the brightest of colours. Further additions to the range include some beautiful vintage pieces including a collection of match strikers and a lovely range of Diptyque candles specially picked out to appeal to the cigar enthusiast’s nose. For one of the largest ranges of Havana cigars, as well as a great selection of lesser known branded smokes, be sure to consult the experts at Tomtom. 63 Elizabeth Street, 020 7730 1790, www.tomtom.co.uk

The latest consumer guide from AIPP provides industry intelligence on how to buy property safely overseas...
T
he Association of International Property Professionals (AIPP) has launched its latest guide on purchasing property outside the UK. A must-have for anyone considering a move abroad, the guide is a free publication aimed solely at helping consumers protect themselves through the purchase process, by alerting them to potential pitfalls and highlighting key considerations when buying property internationally. As a not-for-profit organisation, AIPP offers impartial advice to buyers of international real estate and this annual publication is full of useful guidance, including the important ‘do’s and don’ts’ when buying a property overseas. It also covers topics including inspection trips, arranging finance, choosing what and where to buy, and the importance of independent legal advice. “Good, independent advice is much needed in this marketplace, and we produce this publication to help buyers of international property navigate through the process,” says Mark Sharp, AIPP’s chief executive. 65

“An important part of our work is providing buyers with information and instruction as they embark on an overseas property purchase. This advice is free and impartial, and it will be an essential reference guide for many hundreds of buyers over the next 12 months.” The AIPP’s guide also explains the benefits of buying with AIPP members, who have committed themselves to be accountable under the industry code of conduct. Visit www.aipp.org.uk to read “How to Buy Overseas Property Safely” online, contact the AIPP on +44 (0)203 207 9095 or email enquiries@aipp.org. uk to request a copy by post. n 66

Home Counties home Bespoke property acquisition services now available in the Home Counties from Harrods Estates
B
uyers in the Home Counties can now benefit from a discreet, bespoke property acquisition service, courtesy of Harrods Estates. The luxury Harrods Estates Property Acquisition Service takes buyers through the entire process, from initial search to contract exchange and completion. Mark Collins, managing director of Harrods Estates, explains that the services works in the same way as the popular duo Kirsty Allsop and Phil Spencer from successful TV show Location, Location, Location. “We leverage our advisors’ in-depth knowledge and extensive network of contacts to provide clients with independent, impartial and commercially sound advice on buying properties. We also have privileged access to some of the best properties available in the Home Counties, both on and off market.” Harrods Estates is the luxury real estate arm of the Harrods Group, specialising in the sale, let, acquisition and management of some of the most exclusive properties in Central London and prime overseas locations. The new Home Counties service, which launched this autumn, offers an initial, free consultation from which the experts devise a comprehensive client brief which then forms the basis for their search. These experts will call on a number of key sources, as well as touring the local area, before short-listing a variety of properties for viewings. All searches are supported by detailed property reports, which 68
cover both general data on the area (such as market reviews, local schools, shops and amenities), as well as property specific information, such as land and planning reviews, advice on investment potential, estimates for development and refurbishment, rental forecasts and estimated running costs. Once a suitable property is found, the service also takes over the complexities of negotiating offers and sales on behalf of clients, working with agents, buyers, sellers, solicitors and all third parties throughout the process through to completion. Mark Collins adds: “Our clients are extremely busy people who are often keen to maintain their privacy but want to find a prime property. The service offers a discreet, tailor-made solution driven by what the client wants, enabling them to make a decision on the best knowledge available.” Management of the service will be run by May Rahmani who has nearly 17 years property experience, including running her own property search company. She joined Harrods Estates in September 2010, having previously worked with Harrods Estates on international projects. She has also presented on BBC1’s ‘How to Survive the Property Crisis,’ and featured as an expert on Five’s ‘The Property List’. n Harrods Estates Property Acquisitions Service 020 7225 6506 www.harrodsestates.com

Glorious
Greenwich This fabulous borough offers good living, stylish homes, a unique and vibrant culture and a real sense of community
G
reenwich is famous across the globe for being the Home of the Zero Meridian, the Maritime Museum, The Royal Observatory, and dozens of other famous landmarks. But outside the hub of village life, how many people realise what a great lifestyle the residents of this vibrant community enjoy? Greenwich must be the last truly affordable place to live in London’s Inner Zones catchment area; the perfect place for young couples and singles to set up their first home, leaving enough money aside to spend and enjoy the surrounds in a host of fascinating ways.
Well connected Transport options from Greenwich start with the simple, easy and quick on the Jubilee line, enjoying the fun and accessible on the DLR to the stylish and
romantic on the Thames Clipper Riverbus service. But why go into central London’s Theatreland at all? (Easy though that journey is from Greenwich!) The Greenwich Playhouse, home to exciting new theatrical productions, and the O2, arguably the best known concert venue in London, are right on your doorstep.
A cultural community Is comedy your thing? The likes of Jenny Eclair will make you laugh at the Comedy Club, and Greenwich has its own Comedy Festival too. If you prefer to relax and pamper yourself, there are ample opportunities to do so very near home. Alternative health and new age treats galore, fabulous crystal and jewellery shops, top spa So Organic, a host of fitness options such as gyms, Pilates studios, and a wealth of top notch hairdressers, beauty salons and nail parlours are all a stones throw away.

Just imagine the Thames meandering gently through these amazing period buildings, the quiet charm of iron bridges and ancient taverns, such as Cutty Sark Tavern and Trafalgar Tavern, nestled easily alongside the river.
A maritime home
Shopping ranges from classic and classy to unique and boutique, with a host of independent specialists. Since a number of well-known faces live in Greenwich, there’s always the chance of bumping into one of your idols in the street. Most recently Johhny Depp was filming part of the latest Pirates of the Caribbean epic on the Thames, using the Old Royal Naval College as the film company’s base of operations.
A piece of history As a Greenwich resident you can revel in Greenwich life because this gorgeous borough cleverly manages to combine the increasingly rare elements of traditional London life, elements which many might think are lost forever, but which in Greenwich are wonderfully, eclectically, vigorously, alive such as quirkiness and history combined. The Cultural Corridor pays tribute to the rich industrial heritage of East Greenwich, and those wonderful old buildings, so reminiscent of a way of life we find hard to imagine today, lie cheek by jowl with triumphs of modern architecture. Take Merchants House (the former Anchor Iron
Just next to exclusive Merchant’s House is the stunning new build, Maritime Mansions. Maritime Mansions offers stylish charm, secure parking, a lovely roof garden, the chance of your own balcony and private terrace – in short, the opportunity to enjoy all that peace and antiquity in a lovely comfortable modern apartment, together with your own outside space where you can watch the riverside world go by. This is a tiny development, containing only three one bedroom apartments, five two bedroom apartments, and a single three bedroom apartment. It is incredibly rare to find such a small development so perfectly located, and finished to such an impeccable standard, but the best thing about Maritime Mansions is its affordability. The prices of the new apartments are very reasonable, well within the budget of many first time buyers, and a tremendous financial package has been put together which gives you the opportunity to capture a high loan to value mortgage at a reasonable interest rate, as well as some other great financial benefits. n Contact: Trisha Allison ta.greenwich@bairstoweves.co.uk 020 8853 4848 Bairstow Eves Greenwich 107 Trafalgar Road Greenwich London SE10 9TS

hen it comes to space and style, St John’s has it all and more. Blackheath is a breath of fresh air, acres of unspoilt space on the heath combined with the buzz of the true urban village which can be found at both Blackheath Village and Blackheath Standard. Greenwich Park, part of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site is close by, with its sweeping vistas across the London skyline. A walk down the hill in the park, London’s oldest Royal park with its wilderness garden and deer park, leads to nearby Greenwich and the centre of the WHS with its weekend market, handsome architecture, museums, theatre, art house cinema and great mix of restaurants. At both Blackheath Village and Blackheath Standard you will find an excellent range of shops, restaurants, pubs and, at the Standard, an M&S Simply Food. St John’s takes its name from the nearby church at Blackheath Standard and this new development, set in its own leafy grounds has been designed with residents in mind. Each of the fourteen apartments has its own car

parking space to the rear car park, which is included in the sale price. Shopping can easily be carried from car to the main entrance lobby area, where an 8 person passenger lift takes residents to apartments on the second, third and penthouse levels. All fourteen apartments have beautiful fitted kitchens with granite worktops and AEG appliances, including integrated dishwasher and fridge/freezers. Stainless steel single ovens, chimney extractor hood and splashback to rear of ceramic hobs finish off this area. Ivory ceramic floor tiles are to be found in all kitchens, bathrooms and utility cupboards. Thoughtful design extends to the hall cupboard which houses the washer and dryer, thus keeping these appliances away from the living areas. The large halls with solid core flushed veneered entrance doors in White Oak benefit from laminate wood flooring which extends into the living area. Internal doors are veneered in White Oak with chrome plated door furniture and bedrooms are carpeted throughout and include built-in wardrobes with shelf and hanging rails. All walls are covered with Matt white emulsion and Satinwood to the internal joinery. The majority of the apartments either have their own garden area on the ground floor, balconies on levels two and three with the two penthouses on the top floor having their own wrap around terraces. The communal entrance hall to the front, facing Stratheden Road has a welcome mat, ceramic floor tiling and heavy duty carpeting to the corridors and stairs. The lift is also located here. Safety is an important feature at St John’s which has been fitted with a video door entry system with proximity access. Energy efficiency has not been forgotten with low voltage downlights in all living rooms, hallways, kitchens, bathroom and en-suites. Energy efficient
pendants are included in all bedrooms. High efficiency condensing boilers with hot water storage cylinders, wet system radiators and chrome heated towel rails in bathrooms and en-suites complete the heating arrangements. Bathrooms have been designed with white sanitaryware throughout, half tiling around bath and appliance walls. Full height tiling where showers are over the bath and en-suites have full height tiling to shower enclosure and half height tiling to appliance walls. St John’s is at the heart of excellent transport connections whether you are heading to the capital or though Kent to the coast. The A2 trunk road crosses the heath and major routes including the A12 and M11 are easy to access, while trains from Westcombe Park station take just 18 minutes into Cannon Street and 33 minutes to Charing Cross, running via Greenwich with its DLR connections to Docklands and Canary Wharf. St John’s is well situated for buses, including the Route 108 which operates 24 hours to Stratford bus station via North Greenwich and The 02 arena. Communal digital TV aerial and Satellite dish with cabling for Sky+, outlets are fitted in all lounge and master bedroom areas. St John’s, Blackheath has been designed with care, thought and perfect attention to detail. King Sturge is delighted to have been appointed sole-agent for this prestigious new development of fourteen executive homes at the Blackheath Standard. n For more details, please contact: Margaret Keenan at the Blackheath office: 020 8852 8383
