From the EDITOR There were certain events that took place at the end of last year that we would all like to forget, the devastating Paris attacks being number one. As the government deals with the political backlash, the outlook for 2016 looks to be an uncertain one. However, no matter what lies ahead, it is important that we look to the future positively, and this is precisely the attitude of Hans Matheson. “London is so full of life…there are so many political debates going on right now about what’s wrong with it, but there are so many things right about it. We never focus on the good things.” After saying goodbye to Downton Abbey on Christmas Day, we welcome the start of new ITV series Jericho starring Matheson to keep us entertained this January (p.14). It may be impossible to turn back the clock, but advances in technology within the beauty industry have meant that we can look forward to slowing down the ageing process. on’t get me wrong – I love winter. The woolly jumpers, the sparkling fairy lights against London’s black skyline, the mulled wine, the fireworks and maybe even a bit of snow. But one thing I do detest about this time of year is that everyone shakes off the bright sky blues, warm oranges and sun yellows of spring, summer and autumn, and replaces them with muted palettes of grey, black and, my absolute favourite, beige. I get that we all want to look like Alexa Chung and Olivia Palermo, but we should at least try to add a few bright accessories to spice up these dreary January days. “People are willing to go a little bit bolder when buying a bag,” says Tyler Ellis, providing the answer to my seasonal grumblings. “I think bags complete an outfit and really allow one’s personal style to shine. Accessories are the icing on the cake; the ultimate statement piece.” And as the founder of
Tyler Alexandra, she is perfectly placed to offer advice. She set up the luxury bag company in 2011 to offer something a little different to the main fashion brands that pump out bags to amuse the masses. I meet Tyler at The Arts Club in Mayfair to view her S/S16 collection. The penthouse suite is lined with bags in a rainbow of shades – luminous pinks, turquoises and greens radiate around the room. There is a video of the campaign playing in the background, featuring Victoria’s Secret Angel Stella Maxwell on a set that was built especially so the team could flood it with bright blue water, the signature colour of the brand. Amidst all of this vivid and vibrant excitement is Tyler herself: small, pretty and blonde, she exudes the sunny climes of LA through her dazzling white smile. But I imagine that Tyler, the daughter of the late Perry Ellis (founder of the eponymous sportswear house) is used to the buzz surrounding a new launch. Her father is attributed with transforming men’s fashion when the market was dominated by traditional, conservative clothing. Sadly, Ellis passed away in 1986 only a few month’s after his partner, Laughlin Barker, but left behind a daughter whom he had with long-time friend, television producer and writer Barbara Gallagher. Growing up, Tyler was sheltered from the world of pattern-cutting and runways by her mother and ended up pursuing a degree in communications. However, it wasn’t long before Tyler couldn’t resist the urge to be involved with the fashion industry and she went to work with clothing designer Lars Nilsson in Paris and later Michael Kors, gaining experience to help her start her own brand. Although Tyler was only 18 months old when her father passed away, he seems to be ever-present in her thoughts, actions and work. “I have been lucky enough to have close friends of his in my life who share stories with me about him,” says Tyler. “I feel a very strong connection with him. I have looked through the archives of all his designs and they were so revolutionary for the time. He trusted his instincts and never looked back. He inspires me to follow my dreams and not be afraid to take risks. I feel his presence with me always.” Not only do accounts suggest that Ellis was good at his job, but also that he was a pleasure to work with; it must be difficult to follow such an exemplary figure and I wonder if Tyler ever felt pressured to live up to certain expectations. “Before I started Tyler Alexandra, I was afraid of stepping into the fashion world because of my father’s huge success,” she confirms. “But I couldn’t fight my

urge to design, so I took one huge leap and decided to follow my dream. It was the scariest and most rewarding moment of my life.” Evidently, there was no need to be worried; since its launch, the label has gone from strength to strength. It is the favoured accessory of big retailers such as Matches Fashion and Fortnum & Mason and you’d have trouble finding a red carpet event or Hollywood party that doesn’t have a Jamie Doctor bag or the mini Lee pouchet draped on an A-lister’s arm – Reese Witherspoon, Amber Heard, Kate Hudson, Sandra Bullock, Amy Schumer and Emily Ratajkowski are among the brand’s fans. The understated elegance of each bag might be one reason they are favoured by so many. Each tote is crafted with acute skill by artisans in Florence and the exotic skins – including ostrich leg, frog and toad – are sourced from reputable suppliers who are certified by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Little touches such as the ‘Thayer Blue’ lining and the pine cone symbol used for the zip and feet (which represents human enlightenment) make each bag feel like it has been personally crafted for you. Most importantly, there are no glaring logos or look-at-me embellishments. “I am a big fan of anonymous branding,” explains Tyler. “I prefer a more subtle approach.” Each bag has a small gold plate in the lining, etched with the brand name written in her father’s hand. “I found an envelope my father had addressed to me for my first birthday – ‘Miss Tyler Alexandra Ellis’ – and I took this penmanship of my name to create my Tyler Alexandra logo, making him a very special part of every bag.” It is not easy to establish a small label as an internationally recognised brand, but Tyler’s passion for her vision has transfixed many people around the globe. “I travel all over for work and I love it! My next stop will be Hong Kong, then Singapore and Jakarta for another round of shows. After that, I’ll be needing a little bit of downtime (I’m going to go travelling with my husband) and then I’m hoping to visit Istanbul, Dubai and Delhi. I can’t wait.” She met her partner, Ben Shriner, on a blind date and, despite her busy schedule, tries to spend as much time as possible with him
and their dogs at home in California. “It’s more like we visit them at their home in LA,” she adds with a smile. I’m starting to think that maybe it’s because of the sunny climate across the pond that the Ellis mentality is so positive. After all, it was Perry Ellis who said: “I think fashion dies when it is taken too seriously.” The sombre colours that us Londoners seem to favour show that we have strayed from this pearl of wisdom. But Tyler is here to take up her father’s mantle and bring us out of the shadows and into the fun, bright light. Rock around the clock Each year, Harry Winston partners with some of the most creative minds in independent watchmaking to produce an extraordinary, limited-edition timepiece. It’s Complicated - We kick off the New Year by celebrating the most stupefying examples of mechanical mastery of the past few months
Perfect Timing After subjecting the watch to five tests, including three measurement cycles, exposure to magnetic fields, and exposure to more than 150 impacts, judges at the biennial International Chronometry Competition 2015 named Louis Moinet’s Vertalor as the most accurate tourbillon of the past two years. The most precise mechanical watch ever created remains Greubel Forsey’s Double Tourbillon 30°, which won in 2011.

“I call perpetual calendars boomerang watches,” says Maximilian Büsser, founder of MB&F. “Boomerang watches because they come back for repair so often.” The trouble with perpetual calendar watches – those that automatically account for months of varying lengths and leap years – is that mechanisms jam and dates jump when they shouldn’t. MB&F’s solution is the Legacy Machine Perpetual which, instead of using a conventional space-consuming big-lever system to flick through dates, uses a series of superimposed disks. Art for Art’s Sake The Most Complicated Watch Ever Made A complication, in watch speak, refers to anything a timepiece does over and above displaying the hours and minutes of the day. Launched in 2015, Vacheron Constantin’s Reference 57260 features 57 complications. It will tell you everything from the time in 24 cities, to seasons, equinoxes and signs of the zodiac. It has 31 hands, two dials and 2,826 parts. Owners must remember to correct its moon phases once every 1,027 years.
Jaquet Droz’s The Charming Bird has won the 2015 Mechanical Exception prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. The watch’s pièce de résistance, a miniaturised bird ensconced in a 47mm-diameter case, plays no part in telling the time and will only sing once activated. Instead, the piece pays homage to the micromechanical mastery of the company’s namesake – who built mechanical birds in the 18th century.

T
here has, in the past two decades, been a trend for bigname watchmakers to abandon their posts at big-name watch companies and set up specialist ateliers of their own. The result has been a new type of haute horology – ultra-modern timepieces produced in super-limited numbers that are characterised, typically, by their renegade design, novel mechanics and preposterous price tags. Of the cluster of watchmakers that have come to define this realm – MB&F, Christophe Claret, Hysek, HYT and Urwerk (although there are others) – only one has successfully seeped into the collective consciousness of the watch-wearing public: Richard Mille. Thanks to partnerships with Felipe Massa and Rafael Nadal, and then with Yohan Blake and Bubba Watson, and through strategic sponsorship of teams like Lotus F1 and Manchester City Football Club, Richard Mille has ensured that its watches – or at the very least its logo – occupy a place in the public psyche that’s far more prominent than any of its avant-garde stable mates. De Bethune, Hautlence and Roger Dubuis all make fantastic watches. All remain unknown to the man on the street. Richard Mille, the man, established his eponymous company in 2001. Never having trained as a watchmaker himself, Mille had spent more than two decades in the commercial divisions of various watch and clock companies before having the entrepreneurial vision to create what was effectively his very own watch segment. Considering the current crop of calibres used in sports watches to be archaic and uninteresting, the Frenchman employed his old friend Fabrice Deschanel, general director of Renaud &
Papi (movement makers to Audemars Piguet), to find a way of modernising the way watches are made. Mille’s aim, which became his slogan, was to manufacture ‘racing machines for the wrist’. Fourteen years after Richard Mille debuted his first watch – the skeletonised RM 001 borrowed subtle touches from watches Mille had worked on at previous employer Mauboussin, and established the now immediately recognisable tonneau-shaped case – the brand is now selling some 3,000 watches a year. Its loftiest creation, the RM 056 Felipe Massa Limited Edition Sapphire Tourbillon, will set you back a princely £1,560,000. Entry-level prices – for the RM 023, RM 029, RM 010 and RM 016 – start around £60,000. Even sales at this price point suggest an annual turnover of almost a quarter-ofa-billion quid. Not bad for a man who refused to do any market research, or study his competition, prior to launch. Mille, now 64, is as cool a cucumber as you’ll find in the watch industry – bespectacled, funny and full of bonhomie. Even so, the success his company has enjoyed must have taken even him by surprise? “Only at the very beginning,” Mille answers, implying success is something you quickly get used to. “I literally went from showing the first pieces to prospective buyers and hoping for their interest, to having to produce a larger number within only a few weeks. It has been a non-stop, highspeed ride ever since.” So, what’s Richard Mille the brand all about? In a word: performance. Performance under duress; performance when the wearer of the watch is pushing it to its limit. Most sports watch ambassadors will remove their watch before they compete. Not Richard Mille’s. Bubba Watson wears his while driving golf balls over 310 yards; Nadal’s is subjected to serves of almost 120 mph. Such forces would affect even the most basic of mechanical movements; the ones inside Bubba’s and Nadal’s are tourbillons. Bubba’s, the RM 38-01, contains a mechanical G-force sensor that’s able to record the force of a golfer’s swing – a world first, unsurprisingly – while Nadal’s, the RM 27-01, is officially the planet’s lightest tourbillon wristwatch, weighing just 19 grams, including the strap. “For anyone looking for a no-compromise timepiece that is at the cutting edge of 21st century haute horlogerie, our watches perfectly fit the bill,” says Mille. He insists, too, that the profession of his chosen partners helps, rather than hinders, innovation at the company. “The collaborations are beneficial for everyone concerned. I am not talking only about money here; much more interesting for me is what we learn about watchmaking as we face new challenges with different disciplines. These experiences on track and field cannot be given a value, as the knowledge we gain working with each personality flows through the entire collection.”

In trouble-shooting problems like the violent accelerations and vibrations experienced during a F1 grand prix, Richard Mille gives us things like baseplates made out of high-density carbon nanofibres. Once the preserve of the aeronautic and space industries, carbon nanofibre is created under 740 bars and a temperature of 2,000°C, making it highly resistant to shocks and thermal influences. When Felipe Massa crashed at 170mph during qualification for the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2009, his RM 006 proved completely unaffected – largely, it’s thought, because of the cutting-edge composition of the materials inside. Massa and fellow F1 driver Romain Grosjean, along with nine-time World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb, wear a Richard Mille every time they race. Though his creations may model things as far-out as dragon’s eyes (the RM26-02), magnolia plants (the RM 19-02) and diamond-encrusted spiders (the RM 19-01), Mille insists his watches are “anti-bling”. “There are no gimmicks to be found in my watches; everything I do – absolutely everything – has a clear reason behind it. Great attention is paid to every single detail, even to such small items as specially-made screws, each of which takes 20 separate operations to create.” In the case of the examples above, this means that the five handcrafted petals of the magnolia flower open and close automatically to beautiful effect; that the ‘Evil Eye’ motive is actually a type of enamelling that requires applying several layers of oxides onto gold at temperatures of 900°C; and that the skeletonised baseplate of the RM 19-01 is machined into the shape of a spider’s web from 18K white gold before being decorated with hundreds of black sapphires. “If you are just looking for a big chunk of gold to wear, or a watch whose only interesting feature is that it has a magnesium and aluminum ring inside it, then I’m not your man. We have presented several new movements over the past five years; an unheard-of amount for a small company like ours. It’s even more crazy when you realise that some of these new, highly complex movements, like that for the RM 19-02 Fleur, RM 69, RM 031 or RM 27-02, were developed for only a handful of limited-series watches.” It’s not difficult, nowadays, to find a watch that will set you back the price of a two-bedroom house in suburbia. Richard Mille’s pieces, though, will more regularly afford you an apartment in Fulham. When your creations command some of the highest prices in the industry – justifiably so or not – discourse has a tendency to centre on money rather mechanical mastery. By remaining uncompromising in its commitment to pushing boundaries, both in the movements it makes and the materials it uses, Richard Mille will at least be able to reassure its clients they are getting what they pay for. Monkey Business
It was the Ancient Greeks who believed that crystals have spiritual healing properties. While the K&C team is slightly dubious as to the restorative power of stones, we can at least admit that Noor Fares’ new jewellery line, Krystallos, has renewed our faith in the power of fine jewellery to lift our spirits. The name of the capsule collection is taken from the Greek word meaning ‘ice’ and comprises an array of precious stones – from white and rose quartz to amethysts and lapis lazuli – that have been set into geometric pendants, earrings and rings.
2016 is the year of the monkey in Chinese astrology and jewellers have paid tribute to the animal with witty, inventive and playful designs. Known for her whimsical pieces, Lydia Courteille has created the Mono ring, which features a monkey’s head carved in 18-carat yellow gold and ornately decorated with green tsavorites, orange sapphires, amethysts and diamonds. MONROE THE MUSE Hollywood’s most famous blonde is in Chelsea for another of The Little Black Gallery’s unmissable shows. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes starring Marilyn Monroe showcases works by Douglas Kirkland and Milton H Greene. The former photographed Monroe in 1961 when, in a typically rebellious move, she invited him to spend the night in her bed. In contrast, Greene and Marilyn shared a professional relationship of four years. This version by Wayne Eagling marks the company’s 12th full-length production of the show, since its first performance in 1950. WhereYou Live Rebecca Wallersteiner muses over the passions, feuds and scandals of Tite Street, Chelsea – Victorian London’s bohemian refuge

F
or three decades, from the 1870s to the early 20th century, Tite Street was Chelsea’s answer to Paris’s Left Bank. It became London’s epicentre of bohemia where artists and writers could live on their own terms. Some of the best painters of the era – James Whistler, John Singer Sargent and Augustus John – set up their great-windowed studios at no. 33, where they seduced their muses and painted their masterpieces. A few doors down, writer Oscar Wilde entertained his troublesome friend, Lord ‘Bosie’ Douglas, with oysters and Champagne. Nearby, author and playwright Algernon Charles Swinburne had slid naked down the bannisters of poet and painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s house. During its dynamic and turbulent history, Tite Street’s ‘smart bohemians’ gave the street its unique flavour. Most
of the artists had trained in Paris and were not restrained by England’s classist inhibitions and taste. The street witnessed the creation of modern masterpieces such as The Picture of Dorian Gray and saw Whistler bankrupted and Wilde sent to prison. By sheer coincidence, Mr Justice Wills, the judge who sentenced Wilde to Reading Gaol for two years for sodomy, lived opposite him at no. 58. There was no other street like it in fin-de-siècle England. It is the subject of writer Devon Cox’s beautifully illustrated art and cultural biography, Tite Street: The Street of Wonderful Possibilities. At the heart of this book is the relationship between the American artist Whistler and Wilde, which developed from mutual admiration into a bitchy personal feud that provided much gossip and slander for the tabloids of the day. Both men

were witty dandies who loved to dress flamboyantly, attract attention and be talked about. After all, it was Wilde who wrote: “There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.” But as Wilde’s celebrity grew, Whistler felt that the younger writer was stealing his limelight and their friendship turned to enmity; their spat was satirised by caricatures and theatrical spoofs. “Which one of you invented the other, eh?” joked the writer and cartoonist George du Maurier. Whistler and Wilde weren’t the only dramatic personalities living on the street. One morning in 1889, Oscar Wilde looked out of his window and saw the actress Ellen Terry emerging from American artist John Singer Sargent’s studio in a magnificent long emerald-velvet gown, dressed as Lady Macbeth. She had been sitting for her portrait. Tite Street had its share of social scandal: barmaids and dance-hall singers married millionaires and flower girls became celebrity models overnight. Artists had mistresses and love children galore. The painter Augustus John would pat children he passed in the street on the head affectionately in case they were one of his huge brood; he had lost count of how many offspring in Chelsea were his. The street was also a haven for homosexuals during the height of an oppressive

Victorian society – a community that included camp Italian cartoonist Carlo ‘Ape’ Pellegrini and aristocratic writer Radclyffe Hall. At the turn of the 20th century, Tite Street had become more respectable and the rich and famous of the day flocked to have their portraits painted by society painter John Singer Sargent. The writer Robert Louis Stevenson, Ellen Terry, the Sitwell family and the Marchioness of Cholmondeley were just some of his sitters. Augustus John painted Field Marshal Montgomery in the studio formerly inhabited by Whistler and Sargent. More recently, Diana, Princess of Wales, sat for her portrait at no. 33, in 1994, posing in a cream-coloured silk blouse and emerald-green taffeta skirt, hands folded, face tilted downwards. She was not the only high-profile woman sitting for her portrait in Tite Street that summer. In a nearby studio, Margaret Thatcher was doing the same for American artist Nelson Shanks for a more formal portrait intended as a gift to the National Portrait Gallery. Until earlier this year, when it was sold, 33 Tite Street had been continuously lived in by artists. Julian Barrow was the last celebrated painter to inhabit the building following in the footsteps of Whistler and Sargent before him. He had lived

at no. 33 for 50 years before his death two years ago. Like his raffish heroes, Barrow became a well-known bohemian Chelsea figure and inspired many young painters with his bustling street scenes, stylish interiors and elegant facades. Similarly to Whistler before him, he loved walking along the river at Chelsea and painting local river scenes. Sadly, Barrow’s home – a living link with London’s artistic history – was sold earlier this year and the iconic studio has now disappeared forever. Much like in the days of Sargent, it was in itself almost a work of art. Pots of paintbrushes and palettes caked with dried paint littered the room and an unfinished painting stood on the easel. Barrow had become an expert on the history of the place. He found Augustus John’s palette and mounted it on a
wall; he hunted down two grand pillars that had belonged to Sargent and re-installed these in the house; and he hung heavy curtains over the windows to shut out potential distractions from Christine Keeler directly opposite (or so the story went). Perhaps the ghosts of vanished artists and bohemians remain behind, whispering their secrets of the famed Tite Street – some surprising, some sordid and some profound. Feast Your Eyes Q. What inspired your wintry photographs? A. I am drawn to graphic subjects and also like to show human elements within the natural landscape. My latest collection of photographs features a hand-picked selection of my favourite wintry fine art mountain and snow photographs, taken in the Alps, featuring lonely skiers, snow trees, glaciers and majestic peaks.
My intention to strike an emotional and spiritual chord in my landscape work has been influenced by Rothko and Turner.
Q. Your new photographs show no close-ups of skiers, only mountains, snow and trees. Is this monumental atmosphere deliberate? A. I enjoy the sense of scale: a close-up of a skier would probably spoil the mood.
Q. Where is your work collected? A. My work is collected worldwide by institutions and private individuals – the works are available as limitededition prints, each signed, numbered and dated.
Q. What effect do you aim to capture in your work? A. One always hopes for that magical moment when a subject falls into the lens.

My work has taken me from the jungles of Cambodia, the streets of Jodhpur and the high Atlas Mountains to the waters of the Scottish Isles. I have been shooting commissioned or self-funded projects for 25 years, capturing moments in time, often before the modern world has made its mark. Q. What are your artistic influences? A. My drive to see the world through the lens of a camera was inspired by the romance of 19th-century travellers and, more recently, National Geographic photographers. The influence of painting in my work stems from my study of Art History at the University of Manchester.

If you are suffering from January blues, add a bit of colour to the month with a visit to the Serpentine Galleries. Transience is an exhibition of Pop-Art-inspired pictures by Michael Craig-Martin. He has created a digital work of a light bulb, bursting with joyous, exuberant colour specially for the Serpentine. Craig-Martin has said: “When I first captured the bulb, among other household objects, in the ‘80s, I never expected that it would become a thing of design history.” Over his extraordinary career, the artist has studied with Richard Serra and taught leading lights of Young British Artists, including Damien Hirst and Sarah Lucas. Champagne Life Expect the international crowds to swirl around the Saatchi Gallery, celebrating its 30th anniversary this January. The gallery will unveil Champagne Life, its newest exhibition featuring a dazzling roll call of acclaimed female artists, taken from the collection of its founder Charles Saatchi. Saatchi has made a name gathering star pieces by artists Tracey Emin, quirky Portuguese printmaker Paula Rego and fleshy portrait painter Jenny Saville. Long to Reign Over Us An art-film installation at Kensington Palace celebrates Queen Elizabeth II becoming our longest-ruling monarch, beating Queen Victoria. Deirdre Murphy, senior curator at Kensington Palace, said: “We want to mark this important moment in the reign of Her Majesty The Queen by paying tribute both to her, and to her predecessor as longest-reigning monarchs.” Drawing parallels between the lives of our sovereign and Queen Victoria, the film explores key moments in their two reigns through imagery, from coronations, weddings and births. Luck of the Draw Celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, The Royal Drawing School, which was founded by HRH The Prince of Wales and artist Catherine Goodman, now operates studios in Shoreditch, Oxford Street, South Kensington and Trinity Buoy Wharf. Teachers include local artists David Dawson and Sophie de Stempel. Every year the school presents the best post-graduate student drawings at its end-of-year show. The Beauty of White If you love frost, snow and ice, then don’t miss seeing The White Show at the Flow Gallery. It explores the impact that white objects have on their surroundings. “White is the colour of space. Leafless Trees Gathered Leaves is a haunting exhibition by Minnesotan artist Alec Soth. Widely celebrated as one of the leading contemporary photojournalists working today, Soth’s dazzling images are often set against the austere landscapes and interiors of Middle America. A group of images entitled Sleeping by the Mississippi (2004) “evokes the spirit of Huckleberry Finn”, the famous character in Mark Twain’s masterpiece. Songbook (2014), Soth’s most recent work, saw him travel across America, chronicling rural festivals, This image: The Decorative Antiques & dances and communal gatherings. Saturday 12 December 2015 marked Frank Sinatra’s 100th birthday – rewording one of his hits: you make us feel so young! To celebrate the centenary, Proud Chelsea has collaborated with the Sinatra family and others close to the famed singer to create Sinatra at 100: A Century in the Making. The exhibition contains images from the family’s personal collection and photos by acclaimed photographers, such as Terry O’Neill, Ken Veeder and Milton H Greene, who created some of the most memorable images of Sinatra. These Hollywood photographers delved into their archives to unearth previously unseen images of the famed singer. One candid photo taken by O’Neill shows Sinatra walking along the Miami broadwalk with his entourage and double, while sunbathers’ heads turn in excitement to see the star. “It’s a rare glimpse into the fascinating career of one the most successful and best-selling artists of all time,” says Kate Boenigk, managing director of Proud Galleries. O’Neill had originally approached Sinatra with a letter of introduction from his ex-wife Ava Gardner when he was coming out of a hotel. On reading the letter, Sinatra turned to his bodyguards and said: “This kid’s with me.” O’Neill spent the next three weeks following him around, capturing personal snapshots backstage, on stage and in private. In contrast to this professional camera work depicting Sinatra the superstar, self-portraits and photographs by his first wife Nancy Sinatra reveal Sinatra the man. Although he may be more well known for his mesmerising renditions of Moon River and The Way You Look Tonight, Sinatra had a great interest in photography. Boenigk remarks that “Sinatra was fascinated with photography. He wanted to learn all he could about it.” Intrigued by the mechanical and chemical side of photography, he loved “learning how to use a camera,

how it worked, figuring out how to make a picture better, and developing the prints in various ways to see the different textures and images”. As his photographs show, Sinatra was clearly successful at using and manipulating the camera. Even O’Neill described him as “a very good photographer. He knew about lighting and composition so subconsciously he might have been helping me a bit in some shots.” Several of the self-portraits on show were taken during Frank’s first tour when, before the convenience of Skype and Snapchat, he and Nancy would take pictures of themselves to send to each other; Shoot Me Shooting You is a perfect example of this. These photos were archived by Sinatra’s granddaughter Amanda Erlinger, who also uncovered a picture Sinatra took of himself reflected in the medicine cabinet mirror in 1938. It was a time long before the term ‘selfie’ had been coined, as Amanda’s grandmother was quick to point out when she, on finding the photo, had to ask what a selfie was. But Proud Chelsea isn’t the only place celebrating Sinatra’s birthday. The Reel Art Press has released Shawn Levy’s The Rat Pack, a luxury limited-edition book, which includes never-before-seen photos by Sid Avery and Bob Willoughby and explores the heyday of the ’50s and ’60s and the endless consumption of cocktails, love affairs and Hollywood glamour. Additionally, watchmaker Raymond Weil has created the Maestro Frank Sinatra. The beautiful design, which is limited to only 1,212 pieces, features a Sinatra centennial insignia on the transparent caseback and the roman numeral XII to commemorate Sinatra’s date of birth. What a way to mark 100 years.

EndsWell The trend for wellness clubs in London is on the rise. As four new destinations dedicated to the pursuit of health and happiness open in London, Olivia Sharpe speaks to their founders and leading experts in the field
W
ellness is an ever-evolving concept. There was once a time when a monthly appointment with your facialist and an hour-long massage were considered enough of a respite, but not anymore; people are now looking for an all-round holistic approach to wellness that covers body, mind and spirit. From intense dietary assessments to DNA testing, beauticians have redefined the meaning of the term ‘spa’ and the line between health and hospitality has become blurred. And if you think that these specialist health sanctuaries can only be found in the depths of a Bavarian forest or on a remote island in the Caribbean, think again. They are popping up right on our doorstep, with four new destinations dedicated to the pursuit of wellness having opened in London in the past year – thereby indicating that wellness is no longer a fad: it is an ethos by which many of us live our daily lives. Opened in February, the South Kensington Club has given new meaning to the term ‘private members’ club’. Moving away from the traditional gentleman’s club where its members lounge on leather armchairs and drink whisky, Italian owner Luca Del Bono instead desired to have wellness at his club’s core. He believes his modern establishment differs from the rest in the way that “it is more relaxed, with no strict rules and a sporty streak”. A sense of travel and adventure pervade the corridors of this former Georgian music hall and has been reflected in every aspect, from the Mediterranean-inspired style and cuisine to the diverse range of beauty, wellness and fitness facilities

available. These include the bathhouse, which is home to a traditional Russian banya (or sauna, if you’re unfamiliar), a Turkish hammam and a Watsu pool. Another unique aspect is the Voyager Club, which has been designed to inspire the jetsetters among you to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime expedition through monthly lectures given by well-known travellers and pioneers.

Following in the South Kensington Club’s footsteps, Gazelli House on Walton Street (which opened at the end of last year) is all about creating a home away from home, where members can come and escape from the stresses of London life. Founder Jamila Askarova feels that, in today’s world, “people are becoming more detached from others and, as a result of this, there is a fundamental lack of community, conversation and togetherness”. She hopes to redress this imbalance through Gazelli House, an intimate and welcoming space that has been designed to “bring people together, spark ideas and bring out the child-like curiosity we all still have inside us”. The inviting living room within Gazelli House features a workshop area where guests can partake in inspiring seminars on a diverse range of topics. Jamila informs me that several visiting practitioners are scheduled to come in throughout the course of the year to encourage “realistic and positive changes to guests’ lifestyles”; among these is Rachel Coffey, a top life and voice coach, and Simon Berkowitz, whose aim is to help “people get back in touch with themselves”. Through this, Jamila hopes to encourage guests “to want the best for themselves, to help them find balance, harmony and inner contentment”. Gazelli was originally founded as a skincare brand; Jamila’s mother, Dr Zarifa Hamzayeva, worked for 40 years in medicine before she patented the first Gazelli product: the pioneering White Oil. While this fundamental aspect will by no means be lost, it has always been Jamila’s intention to take Gazelli “beyond skincare” and “transform it into a lifestyle experience”. Her three-stage Diagnostics programme – the collaborative work of psychologists, skincare experts and lifestyle specialists to evaluate individuals on skin, body and mind – has been designed to help clients achieve their skincare goals. “Diagnostics is the way in which we discover what our clients’ priorities are, thereby enabling us to map out their journey for them…the Gazelli expert then devises an individual prescriptive treatment plan to ensure that the skin’s continuous progress is measured.” Jamila believes that there has been a huge shift in attitude towards luxury, particularly in skincare, as “consumers are no

longer simply looking for the most expensive creams on the market”, but are instead in search of brands “with knowledge, expertise and moreover, ones they connect with”. This opinion is shared by founder of Elemis, Noella Gabriel. In her opinion, customisation is the key to achieving the best skincare results. For the brand’s 25th anniversary, celebrated last year, she wanted to get back to “what defines Elemis as a brand: great treatments, products, expert knowledge and education”. The British skincare brand therefore reopened its flagship house in Mayfair, giving the site of its former spa a serious makeover. “We wanted to reflect the brand’s philosophy that no two skins are the same, no two lifestyles are the same, and no two diets are the same,” says Noella. “We have shaped the experience to deliver what you need, when you need it. It’s not customised and it’s not prescribed; it’s more than that.” The no-fuss, minimalistic aesthetic reflects the brand’s desire to move away from the overindulgent concept of “pampering” and return to the basics of skincare. As such, the house has a real focus on facials, with Skin Labs in each treatment room rather than in an openplan environment so clients are given a one-on-one experience. Noella notes how living in a place like London means skin inevitably “becomes tired, dull and lifeless” due to a number of different factors, from pollution and stress to bad diet and not drinking enough water. Going to the House of Elemis will help clients restore their skin’s healthy balance without necessarily having to spend hours doing so. The boutique caters to those with busy schedules: its lower ground Speed Spa offers 15-30 minute treatments so customers can pop in on their lunch break. Alternatively, for those with “the luxury of time”, there’s the Penthouse, meaning that everyone’s lifestyles and schedules are catered for. This bespoke approach to wellness is not something lost on celebrity fitness trainer and lifestyle guru James Duigan, who has been subscribing to this philosophy since he first set up his elite Bodyism club ten years ago. After spreading the gospel over the years with countless gym openings and book launches, James has taken this one step further with his new flagship members’ club in Notting Hill, which also opened at the end of last year. Here, James feels his “vision has finally been brought to life”: for the first time, every aspect of wellness has been considered, from the lighting even down to the air one breathes – transforming the state-of-the-art gym into a wellness sanctum in the heart of London. James and his team have incorporated an air purification system throughout the club so every breath you take cleanses and energises the body, while the lighting systems have been specially designed to provide vitamin D, ideal for the dark winter months. The Wellness Sanctuary is where members can go and pay homage to the health gods – the leading therapists will infuse you with vitamins or pamper you with massages and natural facials. The final finishing touch is the Clean & Lean Café, which is open for members and non-members alike and serves up only Duigan-approved organic produce.

While the club is going to be limited to just 100 members at the most, James insists that the ambience will not be “stuffy” or “poserish”, but he explains that he and his team can deliver “15-star luxury” by focusing on just a small group. “We want to listen to people and to help them transform their lives. It’s about reminding them that they deserve a happy, healthy life and you don’t need to define yourself by your body fat percentage; there’s a whole lot more to life.” The team of expert instructors at the Bodyism club include ex-boxing champions, former prima ballerinas and renowned yoga instructors. Although technology plays an important role here, it is only used where completely necessary and James isn’t afraid to go against the norm. “At the end of the day, it’s about keeping things simple. The whole idea of running on a treadmill without purpose is over; it doesn’t work and so we’re not including them.” Although the fitness trainer believes that people are far more educated than they used to be about how to be healthy, he still thinks that there’s a long way to go, as social media has stunted people’s confidence. “It’s not about getting lots of likes on Instagram, even though many gyms now think that’s what it’s all about. Our job is to stay true to who we are because there are many people out there who like to play on your insecurities by lying, and you only have to go on Instagram to see who the main offenders are.” James argues that it is no longer about investing in expensive watches or cars:“Wellness is now the ultimate status symbol.” So should we trade in our Jaeger-LeCoultre for a Jawbone and our Porsche for a Pinarello? Only time will tell.

Out on the Tiles Bisazza has been laying the foundations of its company on Sloane Avenue for a decade now and to celebrate this milestone, the Italian mosaics company has collaborated with British interior designer Tom Dixon to create Cementiles. McLaren’s 650S Spider is what happens when you inject road-legal F1 technology into a supercar, writes David Taylor

“P
ut a man in a dark room, he’s hot, it smells bad, versus a guy in a cool room, well-lit, smells nice... When you throw a decision at those two individuals, who’s going to be better equipped to effect good judgment and take a good decision?” That was the thinking of Ron Dennis, chairman and CEO of McLaren Automotive, when he spoke to the International Herald Tribune in 2011 about McLaren’s brand new Woking-based HQ. The space-age facility had been designed by Lord Foster for a reported cost of £300m. Dennis’ thinking has proven astute. In the four years since its completion, the facility has seen the birth of the 12C, the P1, the 570S, the 675LT, the 650S, and this, the 650S Spider. As the bolder, convertible big brother to the 12C, the 650S Spider is a car unconditionally geared towards performance. From the steering to the as-standard carbonfibre ceramic brake discs, the 650S is made-in-Britain technology personified. We took one of the drop-dead gorgeous convertibles to this year’s Total 24 Hours of Spa. Throughout its history, McLaren has taken innovation from F1 and let it loose on the road. The 650S Spider is the evolution of that philosophy. The steering wheel is smaller than usual, the shape evoking something you’d find in F1. There are no buttons on the wheel, however, creating an organic McLaren was established by legendary New Zealander relationship between driver and car. Bruce McLaren in 1963, originally an engineer who Speed is not compromised by the retractable roof: competed in his first hill race aged 14. Tender with the wounds of a bitter history, Johannesburg has reinvented itself as a cultural and business destination, and at the centre of this new image is the Four Seasons Westcliff. Nick Savage reports

P
rior to visiting Johannesburg, I was a bit apprehensive about staying at one of the city’s top hotels given the reportage on the city. Xenophobia and civil unrest peppered the news cycle and it felt like writing a feature on a luxury property might come off as a bit insensitive. However, my doubts are allayed on arrival at the Four Seasons Westcliff, a beautiful series of cream and mauve villas climbing up and around the north face of a steep hill, looking as if they were transposed from Santorini. I refresh

myself with a potent double espresso at an outdoor cafĂŠ on the spa terrace while taking in the scenery. The hotel faces the 55-hectare Johannesburg Zoo and, during autumn, the conflagration of green, orange and yellow foliage is interleaved by the occasional elephant paddock. As I take it all in, hotel manager Christopher Rudolph begins to explain why the Four Seasons chose Johannesburg as one of its newest sites. He says that the city is the economic motor that keeps South Africa running. Not only is it a financial and corporate centre, but there was major

Johannesburg has proven fecund ground for encouraging creativity and entrepreneurialism investment in infrastructure following the World Cup in 2010, as well as a muscling up on security measures. I’m heartened when he draws a comparison with Berlin. I mention that I formerly lived there and he explains to me that, like Berlin, Johannesburg grew on a fault line of segregation that was abolished at nearly the same time. About 25 years on, it has proven fecund ground for encouraging creativity and entrepreneurialism, with young people, artists and chefs taking advantage of the low overheads of the city centre – an area hitherto vacated by the well-to-do during a rash of violence in the late ’90s and early noughties. I’m keen to see this burgeoning scene with my own eyes, but instead spend the day shaking off the trip in a setting of almost cartoonish lavishness. The first stop is my Deluxe Room, one of 117 rooms and 12 suites, which boasts the Four Seasons’ famous custom mattress and bed, so comfortable that I wake up feeling drugged in the mornings. Running the length of the room is a garden terrace where I take breakfast. Later that day, after a quick swim at the spa, I receive a massage of such magnitude that it seems to delete any memory of the overnight flight to OR Tambo International Airport. The amnesiac effect is compounded by a trip to Flames, one of the two restaurants at the Four Seasons Westcliff run by executive chef Dirk Gieselmann, who formerly rattled the pans at the three Michelin-starred Auberge de I’lll in Alsace. Flames specialises in craft beer and braai, the South African take on barbecue, and offers a crash course in the unique produce that the continent has on offer. Settling down with an ice cold pint of Copperlake lager, I engorge myself on a raft of meaty delicacies including ostrich skewers with foie as well as springbok carpaccio, which is butter soft with the slightest whisper of gaminess. Later on, I dine at Westcliff’s destination restaurant, View, where Gieselmann utilises many of the same
ingredients in haute-cuisine form. Perched on the top level of the hotel and reached through a stunning external lift that offers vistas of the zoo and city, View is where Gieselmann really lets his hair down. A tomato consommé prepared from Roma tomatoes with black crab ravioli, ricotta dumplings and fresh basil is a masterclass in simplicity, driving home the purity of the produce. Springbok Wellington reaffirms my appreciation of the meat, its lean tenderness showcased in pillowy pastry, served with a carmine smear of beetroot and poivrade sauce. During the meal, our sommelier takes us on a tasting tour of some of South Africa’s best bins, including a sunny and confident 2012 Boekenhoutskloof Semillon and a 2006 Nederburg Edelkeur Chenin Blanc Noble Late Harvest, as well as a buttery Steenberg sparkling Chardonnay. The next morning, it takes us less than ten minutes by van to reach the Braamfontein neighbourhood. We slip out of the car underneath the paternal gaze of Nelson Mandela, stencilled in large across a repurposed warehouse by American street art maven Shepard Fairey. It’s earlier than 10am but there is already a rowdy chanting coming from the first floor of a parking garage, its entrance festooned with funky iron signage spelling out Neighbourgoods. A walk inside reveals a modern day souk, with a clientele of assorted creeds and colours, all united in the pleasant cacophony of the market. To the right, a man hacks the top off a coconut with a machete, pours in some Malibu and adds a straw. It’s a bit too early in the morning but I drink it anyway. A slight pall of smoke weeps out from the stalls and insinuates itself around the beams. On one corner a woman is shucking oysters. Other venders are flipping burgers or tending Ethiopian injera bread. Chanting breaks out again at the far side of Neighbourgoods and everybody’s attention turns to a stall named Sumting Fresh. Their call-and-response has certainly garnered a response. The queue for fried chicken is extensive; people chat in line, amused by the singing. It’s

On returning to the hotel, it’s almost difficult to process the heady melange of sights, smells and sounds that Johannesburg offers, but as it happens the hotel is the perfect place to do it, a tranquil bolt-hole in the midst of one

he sound of the call to prayer that seeps from the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is hypnotic. Although Dubai frequently gets the column inches, it is set to be eclipsed in popularity by the largest of the United Arab Emirates, which is in the throes of ambitious cultural development that will see it open both a Louvre Museum (thanks to a partnership with the French government), a Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and a Zayed National Museum within the near future. And, while there’s a lot to look forward to, the state – which encompasses 200 natural islands, as well as stretches of desert and a sun-soaked F1 circuit – is already proving a draw for those in the know.

Getting there Direct flights from London Heathrow with Abu Dhabi’s national carrier Etihad Airways take approximately seven hours. Fly in business class and you’ll benefit from complimentary spa treatments in the departure lounge, as well as a flat-bed that, at 80.5 inches long, is the same length as in the first class cabin and has an in-built massage function. The all-day menu features everything from champagne and cocktails to steak, while the entertainment system has the capability of screening live sport in the air. Where to stay It is the distinctive five columns of Jumeirah at Etihad Towers (jumeirah.com) – styled like futuristic palm fronds reaching
66 storeys high – that were depicted being shattered by a sports car in Fast & Furious 7. The hotel plays to its strengths; level 74 has been transformed into a 360-degree, glass-walled observation lounge that has become well-known for its city sights and ‘mocktails’, and a little lower on 62 is the glitzy loft space Ray’s Bar where the after-parties usually occur. Below ground level you’re just as likely to get lost – thanks to the hotel’s labyrinthine shopping mall – and end up in Cartier as you are Rosewater, possibly the most extensive buffet restaurant you’ll ever see and winner of Time Out Abu Dhabi’s Best International Restaurant 2014. For something special, head to Pearls by Michael Caines, the newest fine dining venue in town. The British two Michelin-starred chef has made his name in the UK by being creative with mushroom-infused foam, truffle shavings, misobaked cod and roasted ducklings, and is already proving a huge hit in Abu Dhabi with well-heeled expats. Elsewhere, Emirates Palace (emiratespalace.ae) can make dreams come true. For one unnamed president, the hotel removed all the bumps in its tarmac to allow for roller-skating around its one million square metre estate; for an American pop star, it flew in specific cans of soda; and for lesser mortals, it has imposed a three-minute rule when waiting on room service in its VIP suites, achieved by concealing tiny kitchens in the walls of each premium floor – behind silk wallpaper, of course. To give an impression of the scale of the pastel pink mansion: it took 20,000 workers and $3bn to build the one kilometre wide hotel in three years. Among the team retained to care for the property are a gold leaf specialist tasked with gilding the ceilings, cornicing and just about every other glimmering surface, chefs working with 5kg of edible gold per year for desserts, and a minder entrusted to watch over

the largest pearl in the world set into an artwork of a centaur in the lobby. If you decide to stay here, you’ll be following in the footsteps of Queen Elizabeth II, and although there’s no word on whether she tried the hotel’s special camel burger in 2010, she wouldn’t be short of options in its authentic Middle Eastern Mezlai restaurant, which offers interesting dishes including shark and babaganoush. The must-do when at Emirates Palace, however, is a visit to its spa. Tucked away in a candle-lit vault of dark wood and velvet drapes, its signature massage incorporates three different techniques with rose-laced foot baths, and either gold, diamond or caviar oil to soothe aches and pains and soften the skin.

Of all the natural islands that are subsumed by Abu Dhabi, Zaya Nurai Island gets you closest to the fantasy of a tropical hide-away with direct access to the beach and watersports (zayanuraiisland.com). Styled as an exclusive 32-villa retreat and reachable by speedboat, it is here that the fussiest jetsetters take on seven-bedroom houses opening out onto white sand and enjoy fresh salads and seared fish dishes at its restaurant Frangipani. Located within a 15-minute journey of Abu Dhabi Airport, there is something Maldives-esque about the turquoise water, unspoilt coastline and top-notch service. Alternatively, F1 fans should not skip Yas Viceroy (viceroyhotelsandresorts.com/en/abudhabi), the hotel with a rooftop pool that straddles the Yas Marina Circuit, which hosts the grand finale to the motor racing season each year. Outside of November and the closing celebrations, the best time to visit is on Tuesday evenings when guests are invited to cycle or jog around the famous track; at other times Aston Martin driving experiences are available for aspiring petrolheads. Finally, if thrill-seeking is your thing, don’t depart Abu Dhabi without riding the Formula Rossa at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi (ferrariworldabudhabi.com), the world’s fastest roller-coaster that travels from 0-240km/h in five seconds. Following in the footsteps of George Clooney and Jennifer Aniston, KAREN BOWERMAN experiences the red carpet treatment at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles and Mexico’s One&Only Palmilla

ow silly of me to have called her a yacht! She is, of course, as our skipper Alberto points out, a mega yacht: 300 feet of glossy, metallic grey, squeezed into Cabo San Lucas marina, on the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula in northwest Mexico. We cut jauntily through her giant shadow in our 40-ft cruiser Azimut, owned by the One&Only Palmilla hotel where I’m staying. Alberto tells me that Kismet, the nautical giant above us, has three decks, six staterooms and a helipad. “But Azimut is everything a woman wants!” I jest, though I almost mean it; who wouldn’t opt for this sparkling, stylish and elegant mode of transport? Alberto is taking five of us on an exclusive cruise to the region’s famous rock formation, El Arco (the arch), where the Pacific Ocean on the west of the peninsula crashes into the Gulf of California on the east. There is Lovers’ Beach on one side, and Divorce Beach on the other, where, naturally, the water is choppy. We ride the waves to a sheltered cove, slip into the sea for a dip then lounge on the bow with bubbly. On a bluff in the distance, an old lighthouse marks the spot where Brad Pitt filmed scenes from Troy, while all along the cliffs are monstrous houses, including the hidden holiday homes of Jennifer Aniston, Cindy Crawford and George Clooney. The One&Only Palmilla, near San José del Cabo (20 miles north of Cabo San Lucas), was once a hideaway too. It was built as a luxury hacienda by the son of the Mexican president in the ’50s. John Wayne and Bing Crosby were among the first guests, attracted by the area’s deep-sea fishing. Back then, the only way you could reach the peninsula was by private plane or yacht. Today, there’s the Transpeninsular Highway and regular flights from Los Angeles. For my trip, I had joined the jet set and flown in from Hollywood, or thereabouts, after spending the night at the legendary Beverly Hills Hotel. It was late when I had arrived there, but the red carpet entrance didn’t fail to delight. I strolled, almost reverentially, through the famous tropical gardens, past the lavish pink bungalows where John Lennon, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor once stayed. I popped into the Polo Lounge for a nightcap then extended out the

evening regardless, taking in the banana-print corridors, deep pile carpets and candy pink touches. Finally, fighting jet lag, I peeped into the famous 1940s Fountain Coffee Room, tickled by the idea that its first-come, first-served policy means stars often have to sit and wait on the stairs. The coffee shop has a quaint, old-fashioned feel with 19 wrought-iron stools tucked under the bar. The next morning, an early flight meant eggs benedict at sunrise, but room service arrived promptly and with such panache that I wondered if I’d slipped into a scene from a movie. I sat at the window as Ferraris roared along Sunset Boulevard and the sky turned mauve above the palms. Now, back at the One&Only Palmilla after my boat trip, I’m welcomed hand on heart by staff, as their gesture suggests. It hints at a quiet gratitude – one all the more poignant, perhaps, after the resort was hit by Hurricane Odile a year ago. “When we saw the damage, it was devastating,”

Cecilia Aragon from the hotel says. “But it gave us the opportunity to enhance the resort and turn a disaster into something positive.” One&Only re-opened this summer, with renovated rooms, new dining options, including a steakhouse (SEARED) conceived by Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and a new beauty salon and spa. In addition to the £17,000-a-night beachside Villa Cortez, where John Travolta and Robert Downey Jr have stayed (and where I’m told stars use massive mirrors to dazzle troublesome paparazzi offshore), there will soon be Villa One, an immense complex presently being built on the top of the hill. The resort itself is set among palms, pools and lawns with small walkways that wind down to the sea. Pelican Beach is one of the safest bays in Los Cabos for swimming (as well as pelicans, you can spot humpback whales from December to March), while turtles nest on the aptly named

Turtle Beach, to the south. Service is gracious and the food at every restaurant superb. Dishes range from sushi and ceviche (at Suviche) to traditional Mexican with a Mediterranean twist. There are numerous little touches too: complimentary poolside feet massages, mini loungers for kids, sewing kits to match your wardrobe, binoculars “for stargazing” (although I’m never quite sure if that’s for the celestial or celebrity kind) and, above all, the charming Erik, who strolls among sunbathers, cleaning smudges off Ray-Bans with a smile. One night, I visit the brightly coloured, traditional town of San José del Cabos, famed for its art galleries and handicrafts, and Los Tamarindos, a restaurant and organic farm, which supplies the hotel with produce. The owner, Enrique Silva, serves tamarind-flavoured margaritas on the terrace and lights are strung over a trestle table in the fields. But my favourite evening is the one arranged on a whim, when the concierge, aware of my interest, invites a local painter, Tanya Talamante, to host an art class. She sits me down at a table amid acrylic paint, paper and glue. “You don’t have to have an idea,” she says, as I stare at the canvas. “Just order a Prosecco and go!” I dine that night at Agua by Larbi, named after the hotel’s long-standing chef. He’s good-humoured, gentlyspoken and creative. The group I’m with tosses him ideas, which he turns into neatly presented dishes, although, when it comes to pudding, he spoils us with one of every kind. We dine, al fresco, among burning torches and lanterns; I relax into that carefree holiday feeling. Floodlights pick out the green of the breaking sea and, in the twilight off Pelican Beach, those hefty birds, which you can’t imagine can fly, soar through the warmth of the evening. Having emerged from a difficult childhood ready to show the world her worth, Lorraine Pascale went on to dominate our TV screens and crack America. HANNAH LEMON looks at the next project tucked up this inspirational chef’s apron sleeve
L
orraine Pascale’s voice is interrupted by her mobile phone buzzing. “Sorry,” she says. “I don’t get any calls all day and now it rings!” We carry on talking and the phone goes again. Then her cleaner buzzes the door. And the dog starts barking. “I don’t think he speaks English,” she says, trying to calm down Watson, a Romanian stray she rescued. “He doesn’t listen to anything I say.” But obstacles are not a problem for the chef. Pascale travelled the world after leaving home aged 16, went through a divorce, and opened a cake shop in Covent Garden during the recession, all the while forming a determination that has led to an exciting career trajectory. Originally a model – she featured in campaigns for Versace and Donna Karan, posed with Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell and was the first black British model to land the cover of American Elle – she
eventually looked to find a more stable career. After trying her hand at mechanics and hypnotherapy, Pascale found that cooking was a natural gift and graduated from Leiths Cookery School with a first-class degree. She has since authored five books, with two more on the way, has appeared on numerous television shows and is a judge on Holiday Baking Championship in the US. Writing her accomplishments down is exhausting but Pascale hasn’t finished yet; she is currently compiling recipes and dishes for Chelsea Kitchen, a new online healthy delivery service that started in West London. Also on board are chefs and health gurus Natasha Corrett and Harry Hensman. The idea for Chelsea Kitchen sprang from a chance meeting in 2014 between film producer and restaurateur Amy Gardner and Alessandro Verdenelli, head chef at the Chelsea private members’ club KX. The online portal delivers healthy takeaway options and caters for specific dietary requirements. Does

Pascale have any favourite dishes? “I’m still working my way through the menu, but I love the quinoa salad with raisins and walnuts. It’s a nice alternative to rice.” Healthy living is central to Pascale’s image. Although biscuits, cakes and sausage rolls are still on her agenda, so are protein pancakes and gluten-free brownies. Instagram snaps show her pumping iron in the KX gym and eating from a rainbow of recipes that include sesame and pumpkin seed breakfast bars, a plate of salmon with chard, spicy chicken quinoa, and avocados stuffed with peppers and quails eggs. “I changed my eating habits about a year and a half ago,” she explains. “I was eating healthily but I didn’t really understand how it all worked. I started meeting with two nutritionists from KX to better understand my needs. I have to take calcium and vitamin C now.” She looks much younger than her 43 years and I ask for some beauty tips, desperate to get results even slightly resembling her blemish-free face. “My biggest beauty treatment is what I eat: lots of fresh greens, healthy salads and lean meats.” But it’s not all about beans and flax seeds for Pascale. One post on her Instagram displays an oily fry-up of eggs, toast, sausages and bacon, next to which she has commented: “Sometimes you’ve just got to keep it real.” It’s a relief to hear. What is her biggest weakness? “Cheese. Blue cheese and bread... and wine,” she giggles. “I used to have Saint Agur – I know it’s not the most amazing cheese but it’s everywhere. I started to eat one of those twice a week but I put on about a kilo a week, so I had to stop.”
Cooking inspiration came to Pascale when she was growing up. “My mother was very busy, so she never had that much time to cook but when she did, she was very good. As is my dad; he’s an amazing Italian cook.” Born in Hackney, Pascale was given up for adoption by her Jamaican birth mother and was passed into foster care for a few years and then adopted by a family in Buckinghamshire, who had a son of their own. After a short while the couple split up and, at the age of eight, Pascale was sent to foster care once more, before being reunited with her adoptive mother under a year later. Now with a 19-year-old daughter of her own, Pascale is still very much a part of her adoptive family and is spending Christmas with her father and brother, who will be cooking (I feel like her family have missed a trick here). Pascale shows no bitterness about her bumpy start in life and relishes her role as the government’s first fostering ambassador. “I try to get the message out to people that caring for a child is not as hard as people think.” Her aim is to encourage people who wouldn’t normally put themselves forward to consider it. “You can be straight, gay, single, old or young,” she enthuses. With so many ambitions fulfilled, I doubt Pascale has a New Year’s resolution, but I ask her anyway. “I aim to be more positive,” she replies. “There are always destinations and goals we want to reach but – it sounds really twee – happiness is about enjoying the journey. I want to try to enjoy every day a bit more.”

It’s sure not to disappoint. A project overseen by the late interior designer Alberto Pinto, the building has undergone a beautiful transformation, while still honouring its architectural history. The appearance of the hotel wasn’t the only thing that was new and exciting; gastronomic star chef patron Eric Frechon whipped up innovative culinary treats like foie gras-flavoured candy floss, which guests washed down with Taittinger Champagne. The evening continued to be a mix of fun and glamour as people were given behind-the-scenes access and the opportunity to take part in a treasure hunt around the hotel’s 18th-century art collection.

For the occasion, the designer has collaborated with Sølve Sundsbø, Thomas Persson and Smythson to produce a limited-edition portfolio showcasing a seminal outfit from each year of business – all proceeds of which will be donated to The BFC Education Foundation. While guests tried Ciroc English garden martinis and Bollinger Champagne, they got a good look at the portfolio through a large-scale display that was hung in the gallery. Erdem is known for his experimental use of textiles, vibrant prints and detailed craftsmanship, and we are excited to find out what else the talented fashion designer has lined up for another ten successful years.

Fashionistas wandered in to discover Jérôme Dreyfuss’s exclusive styles and eclectic collections in a rather unique space. The French designer brought in a few touches of his home country; guests were able to celebrate in style with French nibbles and Champagne. The store is situated at the end of Bruton Street, facing Berkeley Square, an area which is perfect for the Jérôme Dreyfuss spirit – a fusion of fashion, nature and art, architecture and design.

Partying in Style WHAT: British Fashion Awards Official After-Party WHEN: 23 November WHERE: St Martins Lane, WC2N WHO: Lady Gaga, FKA Twigs, Robert Pattinson, Kate Bosworth, Jourdan Dunn, David Gandy, Mollie King, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Henry Holland, JW Anderson and Alexa Chung WHY: The British Fashion Awards was one of the biggest events in the fashion calendar and so was the after-party. Following the ceremony at the London Coliseum, models, designer and party-goers continued their celebrations at the St Martins Lane hotel. A guest list of 500 people was treated to canapés inspired by Asia de Cuba’s signature dishes, including the restaurant’s Mexican doughnuts, red snapper ceviche on plantain chips, scallop aji panca with grapefruit and chipotle-glazed tofu with green papaya salad. All this was washed down with cocktails created by St Martins Lane’s cocktail lounge, Blind Spot, and the drinks sponsor of the evening, Ciroc UltraPremium Vodka. By the end of the event, runway walks were looking a little wobbly.

Time for Tilbury WHAT: Charlotte Tilbury’s Flagship Store Launch WHEN: 4 December WHERE: Covent Garden WHO: Kate Moss, Amal Clooney, David Gandy, Salma Hayek, Naomi Campbell, Kate Bosworth and Samantha Cameron WHY: Her name has been splashed across beauty pages everywhere, but Charlotte Tilbury has got everyone even more excited with the launch of her first flagship beauty boudoir in Covent Garden. Famous friends flocked to the scene to enjoy Casamigos Tequila ‘Casa Daybreak’ and Belvedere Vodka ‘Raspberry Rascal’ and ‘Skinny Bitch’ cocktails, as well as Champagne Jacquart and Gingerella ginger ale. Then everyone headed to the The Nag’s Head pub for the after-party, where the Christmas spirit was in full flow with a mistletoe wall, burlesque tequila girls offering drinks and a Kiss ‘n’ Tell All wall where guests could write messages in lipstick and leave lip prints. Obviously, cosmetics played a part – Tilbury’s team of experts provided make-up touch-ups for guests too.

A Head Start John Waters, partner at Knight Frank Chelsea, revisits the challenges of the past year and looks forward to a busy few months in the run-up to April The Prime Central London property market faced a number of headwinds in 2015. We started the year in the wake of the change in Stamp Duty in December 2014. Along with this there was the fear of a ‘mansion tax’ and also the uncertainty of the outcome of the May election. Following the somewhat surprising Conservative victory, there was a feeling among some that the market would return with a bang. While it is certainly true that in the days immediately following the election there were some fantastic deals done, it is fair to say that a level of caution persisted with buyers. The major factor that contributed to this caution was, and to a certain extent still is, the higher Stamp Duty charges. As the year draws to a close, there has been a flurry of activity in Chelsea in recent weeks as both buyers and sellers look to agree sales before the Christmas break. There is a greater sense that vendors are becoming more realistic with their pricing expectations and buyers are beginning to accept that the higher level of Stamp Duty is here to stay. Looking ahead to 2016, what will we see in the Chelsea property market? It is always a challenge to predict what the future will bring; however, there are clear signs the market is improving. This is a return to a more normal market with buyers and sellers moving for a reason, whether that be relocation for work, upsizing, downsizing and so on. We have noticed an increase in viewing levels over the past couple of months, clearly demonstrating the strength of underlying demand. There are some very good buyers in the market at the moment looking for the right home.

There are, of course, the possible effects of the Chancellor’s most recent adjustment in Stamp Duty for buyers of second homes and buy-to-let investors to be considered. It is likely that those who are currently looking for either a second home or investment property will accelerate their search and try to secure their purchase ahead of the April 2016 deadline. Another thought is that, perhaps, rather than buying a weekend home in the country and paying the additional stamp duty, people could upgrade in London to something larger, perhaps choosing to rent in the country. Prices across prime central London are forecast to rise two per cent next year, with further steady growth of more than 20 per cent by 2020. London Prices on the Rise Prices across the country nudged up by 0.4%, while London values increased by 1.8% to take the average price up to £503,431 (from £499,997 in the previous month), according to the Land Registry’s October data last year. Property prices in the capital rose by 10.6% in the year to October – more than anywhere else in the country – although the North East saw the greatest increase (+1.9%). Kensington & Chelsea is still the most expensive London borough, with an average price of £1,348,409 after a +0.1% monthly change (+4.8% for the year).

Spruce Up Council planners in Holland Park have been coming down hard on appearances in recent months, forcing 12 owners of houses on Royal Crescent alone to spruce up their exteriors or face the consequences. The Grade II* listed mid-19th century terrace had fallen into pretty poor condition of late, according to the planning enforcement team, unbefitting of the “western gateway to the Royal Borough”. Although some residents promised that works would be done, none of them committed to these being finished by January 2015 and notices were served on nine of the 12. However, an inspection at the end of last year revealed that all were pretty much back up to scratch, including most importantly number 186 (the first property you see when entering the Royal Borough from the Shepherd’s Bush roundabout).

Investment Focus Nick Crayson, founder of Crayson, reassures us that the London property investment market is far from dead, predicting it to be very much alive and kicking in the year ahead
In October, Crayson opened a new investment division, headed up by Peter Jenkins who was recruited from the Hong Kong financial sector. As the London market changes, and the goal posts move, we are becoming innovative in the way we approach our involvement in London property. In the past year, George Osborne has continued to target and undermine the Prime Central London property market by levying the highest property taxes in the world. However, this doesn’t mean that the residential buy-to-occupy market is dead. The past quarter has been very positive at Crayson as we are starting to benefit from giving robust advice to clients, particularly regarding price. It has taken time to adjust to the new market, especially as there is still a plethora of agents overvaluing property, which both skews the market and gives the wrong message to prospective buyers. There have been various factors affecting the London property ‘investor’ market this year, from the stock market crash in China, to the weakening of emerging markets currencies against the pound, the US dollar, and particularly the rouble. Overall investor demand has declined in London; however, there is a case for investing here as the UK is seen to be economically and politically stable. While Prime Central London is still adjusting to the increased Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) top band rate of 12%, we are finding that there is an increased demand from investors looking to buy newbuild flats in bulk. The number of new-build developments becoming available over the next 18 months is set to outstrip demand and this is mirrored by the number of profit warnings coming from some developers with big exposure to the London market. In 2016 and 2017, there are set to be more than 7,500 unit completions in each year (properties that are expected to sell at or above £1,000 per sq ft). This is almost double the amount of completions for the previous two years. It is likely that there will be some great deals for investors looking to buy at huge discounts. It looks like Osborne’s announcement of an increase of 3% on the SDLT levy for people buying buy-to-let and second homes will not affect those buying in bulk (15 units or more) or those buying through companies. In the two months that Crayson Investments has been in business, we have had more than £100m worth of offers for investment properties. This section of the market is therefore far from dead. My meeting with Jonathon Cooke, head of sales at Douglas & Gordon in Notting Hill, couldn’t be more timely. It was only yesterday that George Osborne detailed his spending review and a three per cent increase in Stamp Duty rates, another thing to add to the ever-increasing bill for new home owners. “Obviously, it was a bit of a shock to everyone, much like last year was,” says Jonathon. “There have been a lot of people really keen on buying, selling and essentially getting on with their lives. We thought maybe the beginning of 2016 could be a clean slate for a lot of people.” However, Jonathon is adamant that the changes won’t impact the Royal Borough. “The investment buyer makes up a large portion of our clients in the area; in the past few months, they have amounted to about a third of transactions. The yields over the past few years have been below three per cent typically, so buyers choose properties for capital growth and the fact they want to live in a prime or super prime location.” Although he has only been in his role as head of sales for Douglas & Gordon’s Kensington office a few months, Jonathon’s experience in the sector spans more than a decade and he has extensive knowledge about property in Notting Hill, Kensington and Holland Park. It might be because of this recent change, but Jonathon does not share the dejected mood of many estate agents with regards to the current property climate and his positivity is catching. “It’s the same story for every agent in London at the moment: it’s the leanest I’ve seen stock in a decade. But that’s exciting for vendors,” he chimes, “because it means while demand is still there and interest rates remain low, buyers will still be paying good prices for properties.” Does it make it hard that there are so many other estate agents competing in one area? “Douglas & Gordon is a little bit different to a lot of the other agents; we’re one of the last remaining independent, full-serviced, agents on the high street. We’ve worked really hard to build up a good reputation and develop strong relationships with property investors, search agents, buy-to-let purchasers and developers around the area and they will consistently come to us. I met someone yesterday, for example, who has had nearly 20 valuations from Douglas & Gordon in the past year.” Not only that, but Douglas & Gordon has formed a powerful network throughout central, west and south-west London, which helps Jonathon expand his client list. Over the past couple of years, these emerging markets saw a surge in demand as people wanted to get more for their money, but Jonathon predicts that this is about to change. “I foresee a reverse ripple happening. Buyers can pay rather insane prices to live in Parson’s Green and Battersea but they’re now seeing those prices broach prime locations. As such, I think that more people will return to Notting Hill.” I can certainly see the appeal of Notting Hill over other areas of London (biased though I may be) with its rich culture and fine choice of bars, shops and restaurants. The selection of properties is just as varied, perhaps more so, than other areas of London such as Mayfair. “We work almost right to the bottom of the market, so the cheapest flat we’ve got on at the moment is £550,000 for a new-build apartment in North Kensington,” explains Jonathon. “And we work right up to the top end of the market; we’ve just valued an embassy in Holland Park, which I’m really excited about.” He explains that most buyers are looking for a second home, perhaps a town house to

complement their one in the country or a pad for the children, and that they hold on to these purchases for one or two decades – not just the next two or three years. “We’ve got some amazing lateral apartments,” says Jonathon. The one we are sitting in is part of a beautiful block of red-brick Edwardian flats. It is a first-floor apartment and offers plenty of entertaining space with three reception rooms, five bedrooms and the benefit of a porter. But at £3.795 million, I feel this must be a difficult property to shift in the current market. “There have definitely been some good sales made in the past 12 months over £2 million, but the easiest part of the market right now is £1.5-2 million as there is very little available,” admits Jonathon. “If I can get something in this bracket and it’s well priced, it will sell. Under £1 million, where the stamp duty change is – £935,000 to be exact – the demand is still very strong.” The market is slowing down as people head out of the city for the holidays in the run-up to Christmas, but Jonathon is looking forward to the rush of spring time and the New Year, and longer sunlight hours to showcase properties at their best. I wonder if he finds it hard to maintain a positive outlook when estate agents are constantly faced with pressure from the Government, but Jonathon seems unfazed, enjoying the time spent with clients. “Every valuation I go on takes an hour and a half because I end up talking to prospective clients for ages. I enjoy that side of things, sitting with people and finding out about their lives. I’ve been doing the job for 11 years and I’ve not tired of that. I spend a lot of time getting to know and understand my vendors along with their reasons for selling,” he smiles. After the interview has finished and we head out of the grand period building, Jonathon talks about how high his hopes are for the New Year. “Irrespective of what was announced yesterday and what the newspapers may have sensationally printed today, I’m still very confident about 2016 and I’m really looking forward to the spring market.” I think all estate agents should take note of this attitude – what better way is there to face the New Year than with a fresh start? As we ENTER 2016, we naturally reflect on the most recent changes announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Autumn Statement and the implications for the months to come. The most significant event for Prime Central London property is the 3% surcharge on Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) for buy-to-let properties and second homes from April 2016. The government estimates that it will raise £1bn in extra tax by 2021 and help owner-occupiers purchase properties that otherwise would be snapped up by buy-to-let investors. This change to SDLT comes on top of the overhaul that took place in December 2014, where we moved from a slab to an incremental scale structure, while SDLT was raised to a top rate of 12% for the portion of the property value above £1.5m. The effect of that was undoubtedly a slowdown in transaction volume, especially at the higher end, more subdued prices and disappointment for the government as it did not raise as much extra revenue as hoped, having slowed down activity. The latest SDLT changes specifically target landlords and overseas buyers and they come a little after changes to mortgage relief, resulting in a restriction to the basic rate of income tax announced in Budget 2015. The effects of these changes, all other things being equal, are negative for landlords. In other words, rents will need to rise if landlords are not to be made worse off. As incentives for new landlords to enter the sector or for current landlords to buy more properties subside, the rental market may be left with less rental supply. Will people rush to buy before April 2016 to save 3%? That will depend on their view of the market after these changes. Should sellers be marketing sooner in the New Year rather than later? I think there is a very good case for that. One way or another, we expect higher levels of activity earlier in the New Year. Properties that have had asking prices increased take an average of 113 days to sell; those that have had a price reduction go in an average of 104 days. When the asking price hasn’t been altered, i.e. when properties have had a decent initial valuation, they sell in an average of 51 days.
