SALVADOR DALI - THE SPANISH MASTER 24TH - 31ST MARCH 2012
Following on from hugely successful show entitled ‘Picasso and the School of Paris’ held in May 2011, Gallery Rouge is pleased to present a prestigious exhibition featuring the work of legendary artist Salvador Dali. Salvador Dali is undoubtedly on of the most influential Spanish artists of a generation. Whilst Dali has been described as a maverick and a genius in the same breath, his impact on the history of the modern art movement is unquestionable. Both Dalí's extraordinary talent and eccentric personality helped him rise above the rest of the twentieth century surrealists. Salvador Dalí has been cited as a major inspiration by many contemporary artists, such as Damien Hirst, Noel Fielding and Jeff Koons. Dali's manic expression and famous moustache have made him a modern day cultural icon. The hanging collection of work includes Original Prints, Etchings and Line Drawings personally signed by Salvador Dali. Gallery Rouge has also been given the honour of launching a significant collection of stunning Limited Edition sculptures, working in partnership with highly respected Fine Art representatives Washington Green. This is a rare opportunity to view the work of Salvador Dali close up, where this catalogue details all pieces which are available for acquisition.

They are tales of the doings of animals yet they are “Morality stories” which have parables for Modern life and living. A terrible plague attacked all the animals who were extremely sick but none of them had died. Eventually the lion calls a council of the beasts. The lion suggests that all the animals confess their various sins and that the most blameworthy be sacrificed to atone for the plight of the many. On his part he had eaten too many sheep - and the odd shepherd. The fox replied that the lion, as a king, had really committed little by way of crimes. The other animals also spoke and none of them, it seemed, had committed offenses too grave. The ass spoke of his over eating of grass and was convicted by all the other beasts for such a heinous crime. The moral : as your power is great or small, the judgments of a court will whiten or blacken your reputation.

Edition: 66/100 Size: Paper : 760 x 570 mms ; Image : 365 x 505 mms Price: £2995.00 Reference: Michler-Lopsinger (Prestel) - Dali Etchings 93, Albert Field 63-2 (Page 134) Published by : DeFrancony Provenance: The stock of Henri M Petiet, Paris. The dealers stamp H.M.P in an oval, verso. Petiet was one of the most famous art dealers of Paris in the post war era. He bought the stock of Vollard on that dealer’s untimely death and proceeded to become one of the leading print dealers in Paris. The fact that our piece emanates from this source gives authenticity and prominence to it.
Note: Field states that the work is in fact “La Porte Saint Martin and that the title Porte Saint Martin is in error. Prestel calls this Porte Saint Denis. There were only 3 works in the series: Place de la Concorde - Prestel 91/Field 63-2 B Esplanade des Invalides - Prestel 92 / Field 63-2 A Porte Saint-Dennis - Prestel 93 / Field 63-2 C (Our work) The figure on the left of the image on horseback has a hat and demeanour similar to that of Don Quixote, Man of La Mancha. The work comes from a small edition and dates from the 1960’s which makes it a valuable and collectible item. The etchings all show topographical scenes of the French capital. Two triumphal arches, at the Porte Saint Martin and Porte Saint-Denis, were commissioned by Louis XIV to commemorate his military victories. The SaintDenis arch was erected (1671-74) by Nicolas François Blondel, and paid for by the City of Paris.

Note: The melting watch is the most well-known and beloved of Dali’s iconic images; the fluidity of time is represented in this sculpture as time not only moving, but dancing in rhythm to the beat of the universe. Universal time knows no limits; it must be remembered that time, as we understand it, is a human notion. Instead,
Dalinian time is perpetual and ‘dances on’ – stopping for no man, history or even the cosmos. This image is depicted in three different forms; Dance of Time I, II, and III. These sculptures echo Dali’s famous 1931 painting ‘The Persistence of Memory’ in which the famous melting watch appeared for the first time. The draping of the melting face dances in the wake of time. Dali became obsessed with the flow of time and used his melting watch image in many of his works. The unexpected softness of the watch represents the psychological aspect whereby the speed of time, whilst precise in its scientific use, can vary greatly in human perception.

Pg. 247 ref. 635 Note: In this sculpture the melting watch is draped against and supported by the remains of a tree (the eternal symbol of life) whose roots entwine a stone. The watch
is topped by a crown, usually noted merely to be a mechanical devise allowing us to set the hands and wipe the timepiece; but time on a Dalinian watch has no internal power or motion. With this in mind, Dali has chosen the crown of this timepiece to be a royal crown in order to clearly identify its mastery over human beings, rather than its utility. His majesty is attended on one side by a pensive angel and on the other by a woman draped in shawls. Once again Dali shows us that time reigns supreme over both art and human reality.

There is a tear falling from his eye, lamenting the path of life that all men must travel.

References: detailed in the Catalogue Resonaisse by Robert and Nicholas Descharnes, Dali: The Hard and The Soft, Sculptures and Objects. Eccart, 2004. Pg. 244 ref. 631 Note: The Space Elephant embodies the Dalinian symbol that was born in 1946 when the artist painted one of his most famous pictures – ‘The Temptation of St Anthony’. This painting was created when a film studio commissioned eleven artists
to produce a painting on this theme. For his contribution, Dali created the image of an elephant, moving through space and carrying an obelisk; a symbol of power, domination, and technology. According to Dali, St Anthony would have been visited by the temptations that he had renounced – art and beauty, power, erotic pleasure and knowledge, Dali painted these temptations as a procession led by a rearing horse, a phallic symbol of mastery of one person over another. Four elephants stand on almost invisible spider legs parading before St Anthony and the temptations of desire. For this sculpture, based on the elephants in the painting, Dali chose the temptation of power.

Space Venus is divided into two parts to reveal the egg, symbolising life, renewal, continuation and the future. Venus was the Roman goddess of love, and the underlying form in this sculpture is a classic marble statue style female torso.

Pg. 252 ref. 651 Note: Dali’s famous elephant is represented again here. The animal stands on terrifying long spindly legs, balancing a herald precariously in its back. Dali’s elephant, an iconic symbol of the future, is often depicted having almost invisible spider legs to emphasise the contrast between robustness and fragility (much like
the contrast between the past and present). The animal’s jewelled saddle symbolises wealth and the dawn.
