Dear Resident, On behalf of the Residents’ Journal team, we would like to wish readers a very merry Christmas. However you choose to spend your time over the festive period, may family and friends bring you abundant joy. We’ve headed to the streets this month to ask a few familiar faces what Christmas and the festive period means to them; some spend the big day listening to Thomas Beecham’s version of Messiah and others watch the children drown the tasteful, painstakingly decorated tree (and house) in tinsel. Flick to page eight to get into the spirit. As the party invitations start to flood through letterboxes, we have rounded up some of our favourite events happening right on your doorstep on our calendar (p. 12), as well as seeking out all of Santa’s grottos landing in the local area this month (p. 26). Jennifer Mason also has the pleasure of meeting the infinitely talented, local jewellery designer Kate Hopwood (p. 23) and popped down for a make-up lesson with the artistic Kristina Gasperas (p. 21). Please do not hesitate to get in contact with your news and updates, email contact@residentsjournal.co.uk. We look forward to bringing you all of the latest local news and interesting features in 2014. Until next year…

ST JUDE’S STORM
Although Kew Gardens had to close its doors for two days following the damaging St Jude’s Storm at the end of October, only 12 out of 14,000 trees were lost in the high winds. Kew’s dedicated ground staff deserve congratulations for not only securing the park prior to the storm but for their rapid clear-up in the subsequent days.

COMMON DEVELOPMENT
The Conservators of Putney Common are considering the construction of a six metre wide tarmacked road, more than 100 metres long on common land, for private access to a block of luxury flats and an academy. The Friends of Putney Common, a community group who seek to protect the green space, are trying to raise £15,000 within 30 days to fight construction; they argue that an 1871 act states that Putney Common is ‘not to be encroached, sold or built upon.’

VERY MERRY -8-
Residents’ Journal
With the big day just round the corner, the Residents’ Journal caught up with some familiar local faces about their festive memories and traditions
For a musician, the festive season conjures many special associations. I’m no exception: more than anything it’s the music of Christmas which defines this part of the year. So for me, the special spirit and atmosphere of Advent is most fully articulated by our rich carol tradition, a unique heritage which finds its most perfect expression in the annual broadcast from King’s College, Cambridge. On Christmas Day itself, I’ll be with my family, Sir Thomas Beecham’s splendidly old-fashioned recording of Handle’s Messiah providing the soundtrack as we get stuck in to the food preparation. At some point, in a quietly reflective moment, I’ll sit at the piano and play through John Ireland’s beautifully little miniature The Holy Boy – a personal, seasonal tradition I’ve honoured for more years now than I care to remember.
Tom: Every Christmas Eve I meet up with some old school friends from Hampton for a drink and then every Boxing Day, as a family, we go to the races at Kempton. Christmas Day we usually eat at home but recently we went to The Wharf restaurant in Teddington. Philip: It’s funny because you always think you do something really interesting at Christmas but when you look at it like this in written form, you realise you don’t. Tom: We always have champagne on Christmas morning, with blinis. Philip: And obviously, being wine-orientated, we tend to start fishing out some decent bottles. We opened a magnum last year – but not a ridiculously expensive one. We’ve got another one ready for Christmas dinner this year! We will be spending Christmas at home in Barnes this year – we have a new house so it will be really exciting to spend our first Christmas there. We always have a large Christmas tree and we do everything the traditional way; I love making the Christmas cake and pudding and will be putting everything into the mixing bowl shortly. My mother is Polish and so we follow the Polish tradition of opening presents when the first star appears on Christmas Eve, then everyone gets a stocking, which is opened on Christmas Day. I prefer to go to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, I love the nine carols and nine lessons service as it gives everyone the opportunity to sing loudly to all their favourite carols.

Residents’ Journal
I can divide Christmas in south west London into two distinct parts: prekids and post-kids! Pre-kids, I was working in the West End for a glossy magazine publisher and it seemed the festive whirl of parties and lunches started earlier and earlier every year. Weekends were a time to recover from weekday excess and I used to book The Brasserie on Bellevue Road (I’m showing my age!) for long girly Christmas lunches after aerobics at Holmes Place in Wimbledon and a pamper at the Lemon Tree on Webbs Road. For New Year, we’d really push the boat out and would usually head off to Chez Bruce without ever having to worry about a babysitter or a highchair. Post-kids and I still seem to spend the weekend recovering from excesses, but now it’s the two legged variety rather than the legless sort. Christmas shopping starts early and I love to make the most of the numerous fairs that take place. I think that we do this village shopping thing so well. We usually pick up our tree from my daughter’s school. The turkey will be from Cleavers and most of the tasteful decorations I’ve found on Northcote Road will be drowned in the tinsel that my children have bought from a Pound Shop. We’ll try and catch the panto in Wimbledon (Mr NappyValleyNet still talks about Pamela Anderson and her turn in Aladdin) and by the time the 25th actually arrives, I’m shattered after all the school parties and nativity plays.
Christmas for me is all about family. I particularly love when we spend Christmas together with both my family and my husband’s family in the south of Sweden. An incredibly charming wooden house in the middle of the forest with traditional Swedish candle lights in every window, lots of homemade, hearty food and the children’s delight at meeting Santa – it doesn’t get any better. When it comes to presents, I think about what each person may love throughout the winter until I find the perfect match: from personalised cufflinks, to a vintage vase or one of my brand Milli Millu’s limited edition bags. I think the search is as important as the find.
Mireia Llusia-Lindh Founder of Milli Millu (millimillu.com)
We’ve got a family home in Snowdonia, so we go up there at Christmas – it’s really special. The year before last, when it was a really snowy Christmas, it was hellish getting up to the house as it’s at the end of a steep single-track road – one time we got stuck halfway up with my nana in the backseat. Once you’re up there though it’s beautiful – there are icicles that hang from the gutters all the way to the floor. Our Christmases usually involve a lot of eating and drinking; we have a family friend from Norway who introduced us to a form of mulled wine called gløgg – it’s red wine, vermouth, vodka, raisins and almonds, plus a bit of blackcurrant cordial. You heat it all together, line a sieve with sugar cubes, and set fire to the alcohol as you pour it through the sugar. Having a glass of that is the first thing we do on Christmas morning. I am very lucky that some of my family are close by and I often spend Christmas with my children and grandchildren. Rather than stockings for the children, we have a treasure hunt with different wrapping colours for each of our four granddaughters. We can’t do this for our two grandsons as that part of the family live in Vancouver, so a Skype session is now part of Christmas for us. When it comes to food, we are totally traditional: turkey and trimmings, Christmas pudding and maybe a long walk afterwards if it is a fine day. We’re so lucky in south west London to have green spaces so close by such as Richmond Park and Marble Hill, and then, of course, there is always the wonderful river and the view from Richmond Hill, as lovely now as it was 200 years ago, when J.M.W. Turner captured its beauty.
When I was nine years old, my family emigrated to South Africa. From then on, Christmas Day was spent on the beach, but we still had turkey with all the trimmings at the end of the day! One of the things I missed most was the excitement of Christmas shopping on a cold, dark afternoon with the lights twinkling in the shop windows – something I still love. Kirsty Riddiford, Author (kirstyriddifordbooks.com)
Christmas is a very important time of year for me. As a child, I remember my Grandma visiting on Christmas Day and I would help her to prepare the Christmas dinner. For me, this was more fun than opening the presents. It still excites me now when I am surrounded by all of my family and I prepare and cook a full festive dinner. The meal is always far too big and features the same ingredients every year: traditional turkey stuffed with sausage meat, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, parsnips, brussels sprouts, carrots and sausages wrapped in bacon. This year is even more special, as I will be serving my first Christmas lunch at The Bingham – you cannot beat a classic Christmas meal for bringing people together.
Catherine Parry-Wingfield Chairman, Turner’s House Trust (turnerintwickenham.org.uk)
Mark Jarvis, Head Chef at The Bingham in Richmond (thebingham.co.uk)
My mother is Spanish and our family probably single-handedly keeps the Spanish food export market afloat. Christmas is a special time because a superabundance of traditional, delicious Spanish sugar delights become available. Our favourites include little shaped marzipans, the almond-paste turrones and, of course, polvorones, a diet of which we were practically raised on. I shouldn’t tell you what they’re made of as you’d never try them but I promise they taste of happy tears of angels (pig fat). Whenever I go back to my mother’s place near Christmas, every cupboard and drawer I open has been rammed full of boxes of Iberican confectionary. That’s when I get that warm feeling inside, a combination of knowing Christmas is round the corner and my stomach wincing at the memory of how much I ate last year.

A host of stage and screen stars take to the boards at the New Wimbledon Theatre this winter in the exciting new pantomime, Aladdin. Comedienne Jo Brand debuts as the genie, alongside Matthew Kelly as the Widow Twanky and Britain’s Got Talent street dancers Flawless as the Peking Police Force. Dazzling sets, glittering costumes, catchy songs and some impressive dance numbers make this a fun festive show for all ages this Christmas time.
‘Captain Hook, with his sword fighting, singing off-key and a crew that couldn’t sail through a bathtub, is so much fun to play. I am filled to the brim with dastardly anticipation.’ So says star of stage and screen Henry Winkler (OBE) who will be playing Peter’s nemesis Hook in this year’s Peter Pan panto (try saying that three times fast). Pan, Hook and all your favourite J.M. Barrie characters will be brought to life at Richmond Theatre this winter.

The Really Helpful Club (reallyhelpfulclub.com) is an infinitely useful resource for smart, sensible women. The members’ forum, for which it is free to register, enables you to reach out beyond your immediate network of friends to share great ideas and your best recommendations in a friendly, welcoming environment. More and more women are benefitting from the RHC, a trusted new best friend.
Among friends The Really Helpful Club (RHC) is an indispensable online resource for smart, sensible women to share great ideas and helpful tips in a world where inspired solutions can be hard to find. Recently founded by Sarah Austin, The Really Helpful Club enables women to extend their network beyond their usual circle of friends and family for invaluable advice and recommendations. It is fast-becoming a bookmarked favourite on iPads and smart phones across the capital and beyond; Sarah explains that the site has become an important part of women’s lives, developing in ways she would never have imagined initially. ‘This is what is really fantastic about the club,’ she says. ‘The site is becoming increasingly influential and accomplishing everything it set out to do and more. Women of all ages are drawn together by the common thread of sharing tips and recommendations to ensure they get the very best out of life for themselves and their families.’
opportunities. Recently, a member was looking for part-time assistance in her Fulham-based search business. This topic rapidly generated significant interest, being viewed by more than 400 members in a very short period of time. The employer hired not just one but two Really Helpful Club members to fulfill her need. It has quickly become obvious to Sarah that the next development she should focus on is to create a separate area on the site to allow likeminded, well-educated and talented women access to exciting opportunites. They might be looking for a career change, a voluntary role or a way of rediscovering the workplace, perhaps after children have flown the nest, or if younger children have started school, freeing up extra time – the RHC is a unique way of connecting women with each other.
Valued opinions and exclusive benefits
The power and reach ‘The RHC network is strong, with new bonds being formed every day,’ Sarah tells us. One such success story speaks volumes, when a member posted the following comment: ‘A couple of months ago, I asked if anyone could recommend a private chef/ caterer who could cook in our home for a special dinner party that we were hosting. Thanks to this post, I came across the perfect chef. She was absolutely amazing and provided us with the most delicious three-course meal, plus canapés. She then went on to recommend a waiter who looked after us incredibly well throughout the evening and even cleaned up the kitchen before silently slipping out the door. It was quite literally effortless entertaining – restaurant quality food, but in the comfort of our own home. The most perfect evening!’ Sarah astutely identifies a key factor of contemporary society: ‘I noticed that sometimes you have to go above and beyond your own network to a wider audience. One person simply cannot have the answers to everything. Equally, you don’t want to go around every single friend you have asking them the same question.’ The Residents’ Journal heartily agrees.
The site is buzzing with original and innovative gift ideas for the festive period, with women sharing tailored and thoughtful inspiration that is not being talked about in magazines and on department store comment sites. The attraction of the RHC being that the ideas proffered are from other women just like you, whose opinion you value and trust. Businesses are also choosing to support The Really Helpful Club, offering its members exclusive opportunities and bespoke incentives to reward their valued loyalty. Whether you are looking for inspiration for presents, holidays, or perhaps a book recommendation for that tricky to please family member, the RHC is a rich resource offering a wealth of insight. Sarah hopes to see you posting soon. n

CHRISTMAS CRACKERS Festive poems written by local children, to delight and entertain you Illustration / Mai Osawa
Illustration / Mai Osawa
Christmas There’s a time around mid-December, a time when delicate, crystal snowflakes dance through the sky, a time when children laugh and play in the deep frosty snow, a time when you’re given an excuse to get the family together, just for one night, a time when suddenly, nothing seems to matter anymore, it’s just you and them and the constant ring of laughter tinkling in the air. There’s not a feeling like it, not when it’s Christmas by Hannah, age 10 (Wimbledon Park Primary School)
The Countdown to Christmas
The Christmas Tree A Christmas tree stands all alone, its baubles sparkling bright.
The fiery hearth of Christmas Welcomes with light and warmth As the embers of family bonds Are kindled and reborn.
A Christmas tree stands all alone, ribboned in the light.
The spruce of Christmas beckons Stretching out her glistening arms As the roots of friendship grow Blossoming year after year.
All alone, till the children come running down happy voices all around, A sea of rainbow wrapping paper covers the ground.
Hanging tokens of Christmas Waiting, patiently, watchful The delicate stitches of friendship Conveying messages of love.
Cries of delight fill the room as presents are exchanged,
Flickering candlelight Faltering, steadily, burning still Symbolising light and love Always a glowing warmth.
Even when the children are grown up, Christmas day will never change, But the Christmas tree stands all alone, its baubles sparkling bright,
Tokens of love and family Wrapped with thought and care Await with gathering excitement For all to enjoy and share.

Breakfast:
SMOKED SALMON AND SCRAMBLED EGGS Affordable Miolo Brut Millesime 2008, £20 Special Occasion Bollinger La Grande Année 2002, £75 Extravagant Dom Pérignon Rose 2002, £275 ‘Unfortunately, there is only one new release from Dom Perignon on the market, but what a wine it is. The 2002 Brut Rose explodes from the glass with endless layers of huge, voluptuous fruit. A big, fullbodied wine, the 2002 is probably the most overly vinous, intense rose ever made by long-time Chef de Caves Richard Geoffroy.’
Lunch: TURKEY WITH ALL THE TRIMMINGS Affordable Ronan 2010, £11 ‘Ronan Laborde of Chateau Clinet has captured the attention of the wine world through the creation of his latest wine “The Ronan”. We visited Clinet during en primuer week [when one buys wines in cask before they go onto the market] and were struck by the quality of this wine, Clinet’s youngest sibling. The general consensus in the trade is that this is a wine priced at £11 per bottle, but, in actual fact, feels more like a wine worth £30-40 per bottle.’ Special Occasion Felton Road, Cornish Point Pinot Noir 2012, £85

The Alternative
Christmas Tipple
Jennifer Mason learns from The Beer Boutique why a special beer can be just as delicious an accompaniment to your Christmas menu The Beer Boutique began as the project of two childhood friends, Marc Verlet and Eddie Lancaster, with a shared passion for excellent beer. Having spent a lot of time together drinking fine beer in the Dutch town of Maastricht, Marc and Eddie decided it was high time to bring a piece of the continental drinking culture over to the UK; thus, The Beer Boutique was born. Putney is the perfect base for the business, already home to numerous pubs and bars. The Beer Boutique’s mission? To get as many people in London drinking the good stuff as possible.
Breakfast:
SMOKED SALMON AND SCRAMBLED EGGS Affordable Beavertown Smog Rocket, £3 ‘A lightly smoked porter with subtle aromas of campfire and sweet malts that match the smoked salmon without overpowering it like many other smoked beers would.’ Special Occasion Brewdog AB:14, £15 ‘One of Brewdog’s limited release Abstrakt series, AB:14 is an Imperial Weizenbock. With hints of spices, herbs and sweet malts, this punchy 10.2 per cent dark wheat beer is one hell of a way to get started.’
Lunch: TURKEY WITH ALL THE TRIMMINGS Affordable Sam Smiths Winter Welcome, £3.20 ‘Although technically classified as a warming Christmas beer, it drinks a lot like a nicely-rounded pale ale. The slightly spicy notes of clove and cinnamon are great with Christmassy food.’ Special Occasion Malheur Biere Brut, £16.50 ‘Everybody loves a bit of bubbly, but who says it has to be made from grapes? Malheur’s Biere Brut is a Belgian blonde beer re-fermented with champagne yeast and given every step of the traditional Méthode Champagnoise. The true Champagne of beers.’
Dessert: CHRISTMAS PUDDING Affordable Boon Kriek, £4 ‘With Boon Kriek you don’t just get cherry syrup mixed in with some beer. You get a tart ale that’s been barrel-aged with real black cherries producing a wonderful natural, refreshing cherry flavour.’ Special Occasion Rochefort 10, £5 ‘An extremely well-rounded beer. Boozy enough at 11.2 per cent to replace the traditional brandy, it has flavours of prunes, dates, brandy, plums and much more, making it a great fruity match for your Christmas pud.' n

FESTIVE BEAUTY Three tried-and-tested treats to help you prepare for a season of celebration
THE HAIRCUT A visit to any Sean Hanna hair salon is an experience in itself – the shampoo station is something out of the space age. You wouldn’t think rainbow light hoods with inbuilt speakers would be relaxing, but blimey, aren’t they just. I digress, so down to business: the haircut. If your hair is shoulder length (or longer) and you’re looking for a volume boost, look no further than the Connexion Cut. A reverse take on the layered cut, it styles the hair shorter around the crown, keeping the layers at the front longer, which gives a cascading effect. I give this daunting cut a try and am seriously impressed with the results. My hair falls in soft layers that give me volume without frizz, and it even corrected my problem ‘bangs’. The look can be as high or low maintenance as you like. Those harbouring apprehensions should ask for Lucie, who did a reassuringly excellent job.
THE MANICURE The newest addition to the Sheen Lane storefronts is family-run salon Emily Victoria, owned by (and named after) its main therapist Emily. I visited to test-drive the Shellac Glittery Manicure and walked away with neat, oval nails bearing longwearing polish in a twinkly (yet somehow still subtle) shade of bronze, perfect for putting the finishing touch on that Christmas-party look. The salon, however, offers a lot more than just pampering for your pinkies; Emily is an expert in all things facial and the salon offers a range of treatments, including facial peels, for more in-depth party preparation.

THE MAKEOVER
Jennifer is transformed by Kristina’s expert hand
Kristina Gasperas has studied makeup artistry and fashion styling at prestigious institutions all over Europe and the UK. She is most famous for her bridal makeras Kristina Gaspe up (Kristina is the 2013 Wedding Awards National Winner), but she also does occasion make-up, as well as tutorials. Who better then, to help me with the final ‘treat’ on my Christmas list – a festive party makeover. Makeup / Kristina Gasperas
(kristinagasperas.com) Photography / Kristida Stalionyte
(kristida.com)
I
arrive at Paris Moses salon (Kristina’s new ‘spot’ in Richmond) extremely nervous because I’m about to have my photograph taken. Without makeup. Fortunately, photographer Kristida Stalionyte is encouraging and professional, and my ‘before’ shots don’t fill me with the fear I expect. Instead, I put my best face forward (so to speak) and prepare to be transformed. Kristina begins with eye makeup. We’re trying out two looks today: Bronze Glitter and Smokey Black (as I’ve dubbed them). When using darker eye shadow colours, Kristina tells me, she prefers to do eye makeup first, so any powder that falls onto my cheeks can be easily covered. I don’t normally wear foundation
as I find it quite heavy on my skin, but Kristina uses Chantecaille’s Future Skin foundation and then its St Bartz bronzer, which actually feels very light and subtle. To accentuate the metallic finish of my eye makeup (Bobbi Brown long wear cream shadow in antique gold), Kristina finishes our first look with a very bright lipstick (Lipstick Deluxe prohibition in berry red) which is outside my usual lip colour range – but once it’s applied, I absolutely love it. Definitely putting that on my Christmas list. After a nerve-wracking photo session (for a modelling novice like myself), I return to the hotseat for round two: Smokey Black. Kristina adds Bourjois intense eye shadow extrait 06 and Collection Glam crystals dazzling gel liner in black (which give my eyes a real twinkle) as well as several individual false lashes (well, it wouldn’t be a party look otherwise, would it?) before adding the final touch: Shu Uemura Rouge unlimited lipstick (shade 315) – a subtle nude colour which won’t draw attention away from the amazing things Kristina
has done to my eyes. Feeling more confident (having now done this once already), I head off with Kristida for the second part of the shoot. She shows me a few previews of the images she’s taken and frankly, I’m gobsmacked. This is one talented team. My verdict? If you want a dazzling look for your Christmas or New Year’s party this year, Kristina’s your girl. Better still, if you’d like to be able to recreate the looks yourself, she’s willing to share her knowledge in a series of private tutorials open to novices and wannabe-professionals alike. Count me in. n
To launch her partnership with Paris Moses Kristina will be hosting a party at the salon on 10 December at 7.30pm, where there will be live hair and makeup demonstrations and prizes to be won. Entries are guest-list only, so RSVP to k.gasperas@gmail.com to reserve a place. Paris Moses Organic Hair Salon, 30A Hill Street, Richmond TW9 1TW, 020 8940 9646 (parismoses.co.uk)

Residents’ Journal
A Silver Lining Kate Hopwood wields her creative talent to craft precious metals, selling not only her own pieces, but also collections from other designers, as well as bespoke creations. Jennifer Mason sneaks into her studio for a chat in the run-up to the busy festive season How did you find the other designers you work with? Some of them are friends that I did my degree with, so it’s nice to be selling their work. Others are inspirational figures that I’ve grown up admiring – particularly Jane Adam. I met her when I was about 14 at the old Richmond jewellery fair, so it has been great getting her involved in the shop. It’s amazing to work with one of your idols. What are your favourite materials to work with? I mainly work in silver and gold. The precious metals, such as 18-carat gold, are really nice to work with. Working with silver is a much more fiddly process, so 18-carat gold is easier to work with, but it’s much more expensive. Because of this, I don’t tend to use a lot of it for shelf stock, but I love it when someone commissions a piece in gold. What do you enjoy about being a local business owner? I see a lot of repeat customers, so I start to get to know them. I have one gentleman who comes in for gifts for his wife and I’m able to tell him what she was looking at the last time she came for a browse. It’s all about the local angle – I love building relationships with people and to see happy customers come back again and again.
How did you get started in the business? At secondary school I went to do an internship with a jewellery business in Twickenham, and that led me to a BA Jewellery, Silversmithing and Allied Crafts degree at Sir John Cass in London. I then started selling my work through the lady who owned this store before me. Eventually, she moved on and I took over the lease and struck out on my own.
Why does jewellery make such a good Christmas present? It’s a very personal gift that shows how much you’re thinking of someone – especially a bespoke design. n 11 Brewers Lane Richmond, TW9 1HH (katehopwoodjewellery.com)
What attracted you to jewellery making? I like the idea of the story that jewellery takes on. You make a piece and hand it over to someone, and that’s the beginning of what can be an extremely long life. Where do you find inspiration? I’ll be playing around and come across something that strikes me; mistakes are a big part of my design process. Something will go wrong and, eventually, I’ll end up liking it so much that I try to replicate it. I have a shelf collection that’s very organic. Personally, I prefer to work with the more interesting, natural-looking textures, but I stock a range of collections to suit all tastes. How does the bespoke element work? Usually people come in with very specific ideas in mind and my role is to interpret this into a coherent design. It can be very nerve-wracking when you unveil a piece – but I’ve never had any disappointed customers. People can commission from all of the designers I work with too, so we offer a lot of different options. - 23 -

Bad behaviour at nursery
Mon Nov 04, 2013 2:12 pm
Re: Bad behaviour at nursery Thu Oct 31, 2013 12:11 pm I would get the staff to keep an eye on them and see if they can hear anything and intervene accordingly. It could be just boys being boys, but the staff should tell the children that it’s not OK to be nasty to each other. I would not pull him out over this. Give it some time. I have heard similar stories from a friend, her little girl keeps being told she is smelly by another boy…this is probably just the beginning...imagine what the school playground will be like! Unless this boy really stresses your son out, see how it goes. Who knows, maybe in a couple of weeks they will be friends. I understand it’s not nice and you don’t want to leave your young boy having to deal with another ‘naughty’ mean child. I was livid when my daughter had a gash across her nose one day (there is still a slight scar), a boy at nursery did this when she was about two.
Without meaning to sound harsh, this behaviour happens everywhere. I most definitely wouldn’t pull your son out of nursery because of this but would, however, teach him to stand up for himself. Kids at that age say things like that all the time, it’s funny to them and I don’t believe a three-and-a-half-yearold will intentionally bully at that age. Let’s not mollycoddle our kids. I appreciate you are concerned for your child but it sounds like cheeky banter. I would not be offended if another child said to my three-and-a-half-year-old ‘I am going to put you in a bin’ and I certainly wouldn’t say it was naughty behaviour. My little one would probably laugh at that child and tell him not to be silly. Speak to his teachers. Mon Nov 04, 2013 7:55 pm As the mother of a toddler who has been on the naughty step more times than I care to mention, I wanted to reply. My little one started nursery half a term ago and has been initially hitting and snatching toys and the teachers have been very good at disciplining and teaching him kind hands are what we use etc. I have found it really stressful and obviously don’t want my little boy to get a label that then reinforces the behaviour and attention! He is getting better and it is definitely a symptom of growing up, learning to share and socialising with other children. I certainly wouldn’t pull your child out but speak to the nursery to ensure that your child is OK and not distressed in any way and that they are taking the right steps. This is just the beginning of a long road and I think it’s important to keep a sense of perspective, especially when they are so young. They all take their turns at bad behaviour according to the staff at my son’s nursery.

All threads from NappyValleyNet.com; users’ names have been omitted to protect individuals’ identities and although opinions have not been altered, posts have been edited into line with the Residents’ Journal house style
I have recently started my three-and-a-half-year-old at what feels like a really nice nursery. Although my son seems OK there, he keeps coming out with stories of another child’s behaviour that concerns me such as ‘x hit me’, then more recently ‘x says he is going to put me in the bin.’ I thought this might have just been small boy humour as he seemed to be about to giggle about it but then he said; ‘x says he hates me’. I raised the hitting with the nursery staff and they say they weren’t aware of it. I am not sure what the best thing to do about it is. Obviously I would rather my son wasn’t spending any time with this child and am prepared to pull him out, but I am also conscious that one comes up against people who behave unpleasantly throughout life so should I be focusing more on teaching my child how best to respond to this behaviour? Any tips? He tells me he tells the other child he is naughty.

THE BRIDGE
between two worlds Last month marked the 284th anniversary of the opening of the first Putney Bridge. This December, the Residents’ Journal uncovers the history Image from Flickr / Darren Webb
behind one of our area’s most famous crossings
solid river crossing between London Bridge in the east, and Kingston Bridge to the west. Despite the controversial tollbooths at each end, the bridge proved to be a well-used thoroughfare. In 1870, a river barge collided with the bridge and caused serious damage to the wooden structure that was already over a century old. Although the damage was repaired, just 16 years later the original bridge would be replaced by the more solid, stone bridge that still stands today.
The original bridge
A modern thoroughfare
Originally, the only way to travel between the north and south banks of the River Thames in this part of London was to cross on a ferry. Unsurprisingly, this proved unreliable and problematic for some. One story goes that, in 1720, Sir Robert Walpole was returning from visiting George I at Kingston and, being in a hurry to return to the House of Commons, rode in haste to Putney to take the ferry across to Fulham. The ferry boat, however, remained on the opposite side while its waterman partook of the Swan’s ale. Eventually Walpole was obliged to take another route, vowing that one day a bridge would replace the ferry. Another tells how the Prince of Wales often found himself inconvenienced by the ferry when returning from hunts in Richmond Park. Construction was first sanctioned by an Act of Parliament in 1726. Designed by architect Sir Jacob Acworth and built by local master carpenter Thomas Philips, the first timber-built Putney Bridge (also known occasionally as Fulham Bridge) was finally opened in November 1729. It became the only
In 1879, Putney Bridge was purchased by the Metropolitan Board of Works, which, in 1880, disbanded the tollbooths in preparation for replacing the entire structure. The new, modern structure, designed by civil engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette, would be built by John Waddell of Edinburgh from stone and Cornish granite. The bridge is 700 ft. long and is composed of five segmental granite arches. The new bridge was opened by the Prince (later King Edward VII) and the Princess of Wales on 29 May 1886 and has stood firm ever since. However, in the 127 years of high tides and icy British winters since its opening, the bridge has sustained significant damage. A recent study suggests that it now requires £1.5 million worth of repairs. Wandsworth Council has approved a plan to completely close the bridge to vehicle traffic so that the repairs could be completed within six months and invites locals to have their say. n

Did you know? There’s an old wives’ tale that postulates how the villages of Putney and Fulham came by their names. Two sisters (said to have founded the churches at either end of the bridge: All Saints in Fulham and St Mary’s in Putney) were living on the opposite sides of the Thames and were in the habit of visiting each other regularly. To cross the river, they were ferried over by watermen, and one used to give the direction: ‘Full home, waterman,’ while the other would exclaim, ‘Put nigh’, and thus Fulham and Putney were born.

Village living Knight Frank presents a stunning eight bedroom family house to let in Wimbledon Village
T
his elegant, detached 4,351 sq. ft. family home is situated in one of Wimbledon Village’s most exclusive locations, Lancaster Road. Within easy walking distance of the shops, restaurants and amenities of Wimbledon, as well as the common and Wimbledon station (London overground trains to Waterloo and District Line tubes).
This Edwardian house (available on a furnished or unfurnished basis) is arranged over four floors and has been completely renovated and refurbished by the current owner to the highest possible standard. Situated on the ground floor is the grand, tiled entrance hall which leads to a large, double reception room offering seating and a formal dining area, as well as a bespoke kitchen/ breakfast room with dining space. There is access from this room via doors to the generous rear garden which has a lovely patio area and secluded lawn. Tenants will also find access to the garage and store room from the garden. Incorporated into the lower ground floor is a large family room with additional kitchenette, a bedroom currently used as a gym with an en suite bathroom, a TV room and a utility room. The lower ground floor can be accessed independently, so it is ideal for an au pair, nanny or housekeeper. The first floor is home to a large master bedroom with fitted wardrobes and beautifully refurbished en suite shower room, as well as two further large double bedrooms, again with fitted wardrobes and a family bathroom, all accessible from the large landing. The second floor includes four further double bedrooms and a further family bathroom. Off-street parking is available to the front of the property for up to three cars. n
£15,000 per calendar month. For more information, call Knight Frank’s Wimbledon letting team on 020 8946 9811 (knightfrank.co.uk/Wimbledon)
‘December can be a surprisingly positive month in the rental calendar. There is often a surge from private tenants who exchange contracts on their sale with completion just prior to Christmas, and who need to rent by the 24 December. Companies can also send families to secure accommodation ready to start in January or February but want decisions made this side of the festive period. I anticipate stock levels will be further buoyed by the influx of new buy-to-let investors who are in the process of completing their deals in the New Year.’ Ruth Barr, Head of Lettings

A little piece of country life in London
Robert Holmes & Company introduce a unique property in the heart of south west London
D
esigned by the renowned architect and artist M. H. Baillie Scott, whose attention to detail can be seen both in the characterful external elevations and decorative internal features of the house, Oakfield is a truly exceptional home that sits on a discreet 0.5 acre plot within a short distance of Wimbledon Village.
A long private drive, shared with one other property, leads up to the main gated house and gives it a truly ‘country’ atmosphere not usually found in properties this close to Central London. The accommodation is arranged over two floors providing plenty of space for family living and formal entertaining. On the ground floor, prospective buyers will find an elegant formal drawing room with a well fitted drinks area, a generous dining room, and a charming study with oak bookcases and cabinets. All the reception rooms feature the original open fireplaces. The large kitchen/breakfast room is equipped with
all mod cons and leads to a large and adaptable family room to the rear of the house. In addition, there is a small sitting room – also with a Baillie Scott fireplace – with a kitchenette and cloakroom which has separate access from the drive and could provide self-contained staff accommodation if required. The first floor with six double bedrooms and five bath/shower rooms, including a large master bedroom with walk-in wardrobes and en suite, is accessible not only by the main oak staircase but also by two secondary staircases. The lovely landscaped and beautifully maintained gardens, which have a bright southerly aspect and have an in-built irrigation system, can be accessed through a light and airy conservatory. For active residents there is a 33 ft. heated swimming pool in a glazed pool room with direct access from the house so it can be enjoyed all year round. A discreetly situated hard tennis court set to the side of the house completes the leisure additions. A double garage, plus plenty of parking in the drive, will suit motoring enthusiasts or sociable hosts, and security gates at the top of the main drive as well as closed circuit television cameras ensure optimum security. Despite its idyllic setting the house is less than seven miles from Hyde Park Corner and is within walking distance of Wimbledon Village, the Common and the famous All England Tennis Club. Fast and frequent mainline and underground train services run from Wimbledon into central London and the area is home to a wide range of first-class educational and recreational facilities. An ideal location for discerning investors and families alike. n
