Elegant, high-end dwelling exquisitely decorated throughout Matching people and property in London for 150 years.
Dear Resident, This month at the Journal, we’ve been very excited about getting out and about in the local area to make the most of south-west London’s open spaces. To that end, we’ve interviewed award-winning musician Ali Campbell of UB40 in the run-up to the band’s al fresco gig at Kew the Music this month. Find out more from page 11. The annual Barnes Fair is back on 11 July, so Jennifer Mason has been chatting to the Barnes Community Association about its involvement, what makes it such a special event, and the association’s other community projects (p26) – and in case you were looking for other summer activities to enjoy, we’ve put together a school holidays to-do list on page 24. We’ve also investigated the ‘staycation’ phenomenon; read our guide to a peaceful stay at The Bingham from page 21. Elsewhere, we’re making sure we’re ready for the holidays; our summer beauty guide gives you the latest tips, tricks and treatments to help you look your best; more on that from page 15. Time for the return of the sweet, summery smell of suncream? We’d say so. Enjoy the issue!

Best for nature The WWT London Wetland Centre has been chosen as one of the UK’s best nature reserves by the BBC’s Countryfile magazine. The respected nature publication described the centre as ‘a triumph of conservation, going from nothing to best urban reserve in Europe in just a few years, and accessible to millions’, echoing the praise of Sir David Attenborough in 2010, who called it ‘the ideal model for how humankind and the natural world may live side-by-side in the 21st century.’ David Green, the centre manager, told the Journal: ‘We’re delighted to be in the same list as reserves such as the island of Skomer and Bass Rock that have been established for much longer. Our wardens do a great job creating habitats for birds such as bitterns, and a thriving colony of Kingfishers water voles; they’re a big draw for wildlife en Caid ke ©Mi lovers from all over the world.’

A talented man The Journal has learned about the talents of Marsh & Parsons prime sales director Keith Gorny, who has created this painting of the view towards Putney Bridge from the South Bank on a Sunday morning in late September. After spending time as an art dealer in the late 1980s, Keith clearly knows his stuff. He told us: ‘I was struck by the bustle and rhythm of the preparations for a Sunday morning laser race – the boats being positioned on the slipway had irresistible compositional appeal. I hope I’ve caught something of tension in the air at the time. Be assured I sell houses better than I paint!’ ©Daniel Lewis

BARD OUTDOORS
This year’s Barnes Fair, organised by the Barnes Community Association (BCA), will follow a Medieval theme to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta, which came through Barnes. Don your favourite Dark Ages fashion and enjoy the live music, medieval castle, photo booths, games, stalls and delicious food. The vibrant parade will take place at 11am. As always, aside from the running costs and funds that go towards maintaining Rose House, the BCA’s headquarters, all profits from the fair will go to local causes – this year the Barn Elms Sports Trust and Age UK Richmond.
As the palace celebrates its 500th anniversary, travel back in time and experience a weekend immersed in history in the East Front Gardens at Hampton Court Palace. Join the court of Queen Mary I and her husband, King Philip II of Spain in 1557, as England takes on Spain in a jousting tournament. Cheer on dashing knights and marvel at their charging steeds in this exciting display of skill during two days of entertainment fit for royalty. There’ll be plenty of time to explore the rest of the palace, too.
Summer is the season for making the most of the Great British outdoors. What better way to do this than to catch a performance of Shakespeare’s riotous Twelfth Night, set in the beautiful surrounds of Ham House & Garden, just a short journey from Richmond town centre? The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, an award-winning company, will showcase this classic in the time-honoured all-male tradition, the comedic value of which we’re sure the bard would have approved.

MEET THE ROMANS
A SHAKESPEARE CLASSIC
NOT AT ALL ELEMENTARY
The Romans were famous for their architecture, their invention of central heating, their battle tactics and their bath-houses. As part of the 2015 Festival of Archaeology, the Museum of Richmond is hosting a special event where history enthusiasts can learn more about the Romans from local historian Dr Pamela Greenwood. Through Roman artefacts and costume, visitors will explore life in Roman times and find out why this civilisation was so successful.
Summer is the time for romance – and for taking a bit of time to explore the cultural side of the area. To that end, a small troupe of travelling players take on another of the bard’s most loved plays this month – the classic tale of star-crossed lovers: Romeo and Juliet. Having performed at The Globe and employing the simplicity of an Elizabethanstyle stage, this stripped-down version of Shakespeare’s greatest love story will delight those who like to keep things a little more traditional.
As part of its Silver Screen programme, the Olympic Cinema in Barnes brings an all-star cast to its auditorium this month in a one-off screening. The latest addition to the international obsession with Sherlock Holmes, Mr Holmes, stars Sir Ian McKellen (protagonist of such movies as Lord of the Rings, X-Men and The Hobbit) as the ageing genius facing the end of his days and grappling with an unreliable memory. The film follows Sherlock as he attempts to finally put to rest the still-unsolved case that led to his retirement.

Big love vibes As the reincarnation of iconic reggae band UB40 prepares to play this year’s Kew the Music festival at Kew Gardens, Jennifer Mason chats to Ali Campbell about his success, lessons learned and looking to the future
B
irmingham, 1978. What began as a group of friends and reggae enthusiasts looking for a way to promote their favourite kind of music, morphed into one of the world’s most popular bands. In its time, the band was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album four times, nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Group
in 1984, and was responsible for selling more than 70 million records. In 2008, lead singer and founding member Ali Campbell left, along with Mickey Virtue, after creative differences split the band apart. Followed in 2013 by Astro, the three, determined to bring reggae music back into public consciousness, took back the name UB40 and the rest, as they say, is history.

UB40 – the reincarnation
Residents’ Journal
Why did you want to be part of the music business?
Ali Campbell
Where I grew up in south Birmingham, all my mates were predominantly West Indian and Asian, so I grew up listening to reggae music, and I loved it. It was only when I ventured out of the area that I realised not everybody felt the same way; other people of my generation were listening to music by others like David Bowie, which went straight over my head. We decided to start a band to promote reggae.
What’s the secret to the band’s phenomenal success? Reggae. I’ve been in the music business for 30 years, and I truly believe that all over the world, people love reggae. The cliché is that it represents peace, love and unity, and that’s true. It lifts spirits and brings people together.
I feel blessed that I’m still able to do what I do best and what I love What was the most challenging part about leaving the original band? It was really hard for me, because I’d never been a speaker on stage. I’d never introduced numbers or anything – that was always Astro’s job; then my brother Robin did all the chatting, and I did all the singing. So I suddenly found myself having to talk to the audience – and I’m not the most eloquent of people. I’ve got a thick Birmingham accent, which people can’t understand a lot of the time! So that was definitely the most difficult part.
How did the reformation of the band come about? Mickey and I left the original band in 2008, not to have a solo career, as has been suggested, but because we didn’t like the management. We travelled round the world flying the flag for reggae, as usual, for six years. Then the ‘dark side’ (as we had begun to call the management company) decided very unwisely to make a country album, which was a slap in the face to me and to the fans who had supported the band, because the whole reason behind UB40 had always been to promote reggae. Astro agreed – so he left them and came and joined us about 18 months ago. The audiences since then have decided that we’re back together again, so we’ve taken back the UB40 name to salvage the legacy, and we’ve been on a smash, sell-out tour ever since!
Has the whole experience changed you? No. I felt very betrayed about what happened with UB40 for a long time, but it’s old news now. I think
- 12 -
Residents’ Journal
the pragmatic way of looking at it is; I’ve made 24 albums, I’d been with the band for 28 years – I started it, so I’ll finish it. The old band had its day, but now it’s time for this new band. We’re back, and we’re better than ever. I feel blessed that I’m still able to do what I do best and what I love; touring round the world promoting reggae with the hottest reggae band on the road at the moment.
If you had to sum up your music in three words, what would they be? Big Love Vibes.
Are you excited to play Kew the Music? We added this date to the tour quite recently, because all the other gigs we’d arranged in England had sold out and we wanted to give more people a chance to come and see us. We’ve been adding new ones… and they’re selling out too! The audiences have been really supportive; they’re very emotional at the moment about us getting back together. They’re really behind us, it’s lovely. We’re getting a lot of love. The gig we did in Birmingham recently sold out to the rafters and when we came out on stage, the roar that greeted us was incredible. We were taken aback!
Why do you think gigs have been selling out so quickly? We’re the perfect outdoor festival band. In the ’80s and ’90s we had 40 Top 20 hits, so we can rock up anywhere in the world and people will recognise the songs that we’re performing. That’s really important at festivals and outdoor events.
Where will we see UB40 after Kew the Music? We’ll be all over Europe like a bad rash! We end this year in America with an extensive tour of 35 dates
there. Then we’re off to Australasia to do a Red Red Winery Tour. One of the dates there in New Zealand sold out in record time, so if the rest of that tour goes well, we’d like to take that round the world. Wherever wine is made, you’ll find us!
Anything you’d like to say to the people who are coming to see you play at Kew the Music? I’d like to say: big love to everybody. I hope they’re coming to party, because we’re coming to party with them and we can’t wait. n
Ali, Astro and Mickey will perform at Kew the Music on 11 July. As we go to print, the show is almost sold out, but a few last-minute tickets have been released. For more information, visit kewthemusic.org

M
eet Queen Anne as she arrives at the palace in a horse-drawn carriage at 11am each day and immerse yourself in a weekend of stylish Baroque entertainment in the palace and grounds of Hampton Court Palace. A beautiful repertoire of music, composed during Queen Anne’s life and reign, will be presented by musicians and singers of the Gabrieli Consort & Players in bite-sized performances around the palace. The programme will include movements from Handel’s Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne, performed in the stunning setting of Hampton Court’s Great Hall, and works by Purcell in the glorious Cartoon Gallery. The Privy Garden will be brought to life by
a company of eight dancers performing Anna Morrissey’s homage to the 18th century court, On Progress, with original music composed by Sam Thomas. There will also be the opportunity to learn about dining and court etiquette in the Queen’s Public Dining Room, and we invite you to relax and picnic in the picturesque setting of the East Gardens, where you might even spot the Queen and her court taking the air. Entry is included with palace admission and, this year, we are celebrating our 500th anniversary – so there’s never been a better time to explore the rest of the palace and grounds. n

Night and day For luxurious and unusual fragrances, look no further than Jo Malone. This summer, the brand has a variety of different colognes to suit all tastes, but its experts have recommended two unique scents: one for daytime and one for evenings. The Wood Sage & Sea Salt cologne (daytime) is hands down our favourite smell of the summer. Notes of sage, sea salt and ambrette seeds make up this refreshing and subtle perfume. For the evening, we’ve been recommended the Incense & Cedrat Cologne Intense – a rich and vibrant scent with notes of vetyver, incense and cedrat.

TRIED & TESTED The Journal reviews some of the area’s newest beauty additions
Beauty for boys The place: Genco Male Grooming, Richmond The guinea-pig: Henry Hopwood Phillips With posture like a question mark and having last had a massage that involved contorting my body into positions that would make plasticine blush, I typically look forward to a trip to the spa as much as one might a dash to the dentists. Fortunately my fears are entirely misguided. At Genco, a male grooming outfit just off Richmond’s high street, my muscles are manipulated one by one. The treatment highlights the rather Pinocchio-esque nature of my frame; as a thumb plunges into my arm, further down the line my hand dances in celebration of its new found freedom from my brain. It’s all stagemanaged, of course, and swiftly I’m back in a state of indolent nonchalance as the therapist’s hands roam along my body’s equivalents of Watkin’s leylines on the landscape. Slowly, the imagination takes a hold. I can see glands being purged of dark gloop, my highways being resurfaced and my copper wires relaid. This is all rubbish of course, but it’s how I feel. There’s no typically annoying spa music, rather silence in a subterranean room, which incidentally is as good a background for losing concentration as it is for keeping it. An hour later, I find myself unbent like withered plant stems plunged into a refreshing vase of water. n
Full body, deep-tissue massage, £59 for 60 minutes. 11 Sheen Road, TW9 1AD, 020 8948 2846 (genco-uk.com)
Taming tricks The place: Ellie Hair & Beauty, Putney The guinea-pig: Kate Jennion I’m here to meet owner and hair magician Cristina Simon and to try a new treatment that (hopefully) will provide my lacklustre locks with a bit of refreshment. The Paul Mitchell KeraTriplex professional treatment is a two-step process that promises to leave my hair sleek, shiny and healthier than before. When I consider the dry, frizzy nature of my wannabe curls, this treatment has a mountain of Everest proportions to overcome. Still, I settle in to the comfortable wash station and cross my fingers. The first thing I notice? The products smell amazing. I can’t initially put my finger on the spicy, citrusy scent… Grapefruit? Lemon? I’m soon informed it’s actually Hawaiian Awapuhi wild ginger. Well, that would have been my next guess, obviously. The application process is
- 18 -
soothing and relaxing, especially for someone like me who loves having their hair played with. After a spell under a heat lamp to seal in the gingery goodness, I’m back at the washing station breathing in the sweet scent and enjoying a coma-inducing head massage. Bliss. Once my tresses have been dried and styled, I can really see the difference this treatment has made. No static or flyaways mar the lovely cut Cristina has given me. My hair is so smooth, I can’t stop touching it! This is definitely one for sundamaged, sea-weathered or windswept summer locks. n

Home delivery The place: Jen’s House (courtesy of CitySwish) The guinea-pig: Jennifer Mason Although I love a trip to the beauty salon to indulge in a spot of pampering, I’ll admit there’s something rather nice about having the salon come to you; in this case, in the form of a delightful young man carrying a
large massage table. I’m nervous initially, as I’ve never been treated by a male therapist before, but almost immediately I’m put at ease by his friendly demeanour and chatty conversation as he readies the equipment. Gentle spa music wafts from his iPhone as I ease myself onto the soft, fluffy towels covering the massage table and prepare to relax.
It’s not just massages that CitySwish, a new London-wide spa delivery service, provides. Manicures and pedicures, waxing, spray tans and even hairdressing are all on its extensive menu, fulfilled by one of the company’s hand-picked therapists. I’ve opted to try the massage as it’s one of the trickier spa treatments to replicate as part of the at-home experience – not that you’d know it today. One hour later and all my kinks have been fully ironed out – even in my notoriously tense back and shoulder area (spend all your days typing furiously on a deadline and you’ll see what I mean). Once I’m back on my feet, everything is packed away and by the time I’ve come out of my trance I’m alone in my pristine-again living room, no remaining evidence of my hour-long treatment other than my soothed muscles and a lingering smell of aromatherapy oils. n
Massage £65 for 60 minutes. Available in zones 1, 2 and 3. To book, call 020 3318 8234 or visit cityswish.com
A new concept The place: London Grace, Putney The guinea-pig: May Best Anyone who’s ever had a manicure will attest that attempting to eat or drink (or pretty much do anything with your hands) for quite a while post-polish is a risky business – but I’m in Putney to visit the brave team at London Grace who’ve taken the traditional, beauty-salon idea of a manicure and turned it on its head. At the quirky premises just metres from the river, beauty addicts can enjoy a selection of teas, soft drinks and cocktails as well as cakes and treats – while the talented technicians give them designer digits. And it’s not your average liquor, either; Sipsmith gin, Moët and other highclass tipples grace the shelves. As my nails are getting buffed, filed and painted (with London Grace’s own-brand polish, sourced personally by founder Kirsten to be free of nasties and good for your nails), I chat with Kirsten and her team about what makes London Grace so
special. ‘I wanted to start a business that was more than just another nail salon,’ she tells me. This place certainly is that; upstairs, high tables and stools make it feel more like a cute, independent coffee shop than a salon, although the pedicure sofas at the rear give the game away. Downstairs, there’s a special area for groups – hen parties, celebrations, baby showers and the like. Once my nails are painted a glorious

shade of flamingo (just in time for summer), I’m sold. I’ll definitely be returning to London Grace for a shape and a Sex on the Beach, a manicure and a Martini, a polish and a Pina Colada... the list is endless. Roll on Happy Hour! n
Manicures start from £9 for a quick polish, refreshments extra. 26 Putney High Street, SW15 1SL, 020 8789 1267 (londongrace.co.uk)

It is, hands down, the best salmon I’ve ever tasted. Intrigued about what the kitchen could possibly produce that would top the salmon, we eagerly anticipate the two ‘main courses’ – smaller portions than a usual main but double the flavour. Quail and beef are on the menu tonight; perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. Each of our courses has been paired with a glass of wine by the sommelier and by now we’ve covered quite a spectrum of reds and whites, and, coupled with the six courses we’ve consumed so far, we’re more than a little relieved when the next change of cutlery suggests we’ve arrived at dessert (honeycomb caramel tart with peanut butter ice cream and a strawberry baked Alaska with mint sponge, in case you were wondering). just the ticket. It comes as no surprise that The Bingham is a popular wedding venue; the views across the river are spectacular and both they and the rear aspect of the building make for Instagram-worthy snaps, plus the downstairs occasion rooms are ideally set up with glass doors for guests to spill out from into the gardens. I can sense my partner getting nervous as we touch upon the wedding theme so I change the subject and encourage him in the direction of breakfast, about which he is much chirpier. And with good reason; coffee and pastries followed by smoked salmon and scrambled eggs is a lovely way to start a sunny day (even if we are heading back to our respective offices afterwards). Whether you’re planning a special occasion, seeking a weekend escape or looking for a longer ‘staycation’, I’d definitely recommend adding a night (or three) at The Bingham to your itinerary. For the food, for the views, for the friendliness of the staff and for the country house feel just a short trip from central London, this is a ‘destination’ without the journey. n

arnes and its close-knit, village community is a rarity in the often impersonal chaos of the capital. A slice of rural heaven just minutes from the hustle and bustle of hubs like Hammersmith, residents of SW13 are fortunate indeed to enjoy independent local boutiques, including traditional butchers, artisan bakeries and old-fashioned pubs nestled alongside exciting redevlopments like the Olympic Studios & Cinema in a manner which doesn’t spoil the quaint, village feel. All of this is made possible, in part, by the Barnes Community Association (BCA); a group of local residents who campaign tirelessly to preserve the beauty of Barnes. I’ve come to Rose House on the High Street to meet two of the BCA’s members; its current chairman Anne Johnstone and Charlotte SharpeNeal, who has her fingers in many pies – currently she’s in the process of finalising this month’s Barnes

Your community needs you! The BCA is always looking for volunteers to help with the myriad tasks involved in putting on the popular community events it’s famous for. If you think you can assist the association, in any shape or form, get in touch using the details at the end of the article.
Fair and organising the Barnes Food Fair, which takes place in September. The BCA has been running for more than 40 years, and its members and trustees take great pride in being a part of the organisation. ‘It’s been a huge privilege to be chairman,’ says Anne, who will be stepping down from her post this year after two years heading up the BCA. ‘Being here at Rose House, we’re at the centre of everything. It’s one of the oldest houses in the village, and from here we can see life bustling along the High Street,’ she continues. She paints a vivid picture – and from my perch I can see clearly across to the green space of Barnes Green, where the Barnes Fair, arguably the largest event in the BCA calendar, takes place. ‘The fair is now just about as big as it can be,’ Charlotte jumps in, as we turn the subject towards the upcoming celebrations. ‘This year there will be nearly 300 stalls, plus jugglers, stilt-walkers, a giant medieval bouncy castle and a photobooth with dressing-up costumes to celebrate the Magna Carta theme,’ she continues. ‘Not to mention the usual entertainments, stage shows, music and rides. We’d have loved to have had jousting to really cement the medieval theme – but there just isn’t the space for it!’ she laughs. And if it rains? ‘We go ahead regardless – with our wellies on,’ Charlotte jokes. ‘This is Great Britain, after all. We’ve learned to expect the odd summer downpour!’ Many people are keen to enjoy this special day in the Barnes calendar, but it doesn’t just miraculously happen by itself. ‘A huge amount of work goes into making sure the fair is successful,’ Charlotte admits. ‘Volunteers are the biggest asset – without them, it just wouldn’t happen. We’re extremely grateful to all
those who come down to help out.’ Other events on the yearly schedule include the famous Barnes Food Fair, the popular Charity Fashion Show in October, and the entertaining Duck Race which enlivens Easter weekend for families across SW13. ‘Being a charity, we run all of these events with a view to handing money back to the community, to various schools and organisations,’ explains Anne. ‘Those funds are essential for maintaining Barnes in its current beautiful state. For example, one year when the pond dried up completely, we were able to help refill it and save this precious spot for local wildlife.’ The BCA also fights to maintain the delicate balance of Barnes’ high street – working with local shopkeepers to ensure that independent boutiques aren’t downtrodden by the introduction of big chain stores. ‘It’s very important to us, as it is to many residents of Barnes, that the village keeps its traditional feel as much as possible without impeding progress,’ Anne says. The BCA’s power comes from its strong membership – but it needs all the help it can get from supportive local residents. ‘We’re always looking for new members to help us fight the good fight,’ she concludes. n

Parent Trap: Nappy Valley Net Richmond NappyValleyNet.com has become an online sensation in the four years since founder Susan Hanage, aka. Annabel, launched it, with more than 130,000 visits to the site every month. An invaluable tool for parents based in south-west London who are seeking to swap tips and share advice, we’ve teamed up to post some of the most pressing topics posted on the site.
How do I know how my child is doing at school? My daughter is in year four and I have no idea which secondary schools we should be looking at. Parents’ evenings are really woolly; all I know is that she’s in the top group for maths and English, learning fractions and myths and legends. I want to know how she compares to others nationally and if she’s reaching her potential in class. I need to have realistic expectations. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Top replies: Wed 6 May, 2015 9pm
Thu 7 May, 2015 7.50pm If you’re unclear about how well your daugher is actually doing (compared to others nationally) I would suggest an academic assessment. It’s the best way of finding out if your child is reaching their potential in class. Look up assessments at jktutoring.co.uk. They are highly detailed and very popular with parents who want recommendations on secondary schools. They give detailed information on which secondary schools will be the best ones – be it state/state selective or private, in your area. They also tell you how
your child is doing in class compared to others in the year group that they’ll be competing with.
Are Airbnb or Homestay safe to do with children in the house? We’ve just built a lovely new room in our home which is a good-sized double with an en-suite bathroom. It’s currently empty, so I think we should make some income from it. We have two very young children though, so I’m unsure how best to do this as safety is obviously paramount with children in the house. I just wondered whether any of you have experience of this with children? Is it possible to rent out just the room without having to give them access to the rest of the house? Any advice or tips you could give me would be really great. Tue 26 May, 2015 11.50pm Neither site vets customers who want to
rent, but they do give you the option to go through any requests and decline them. So you could see if they’ve had lots of positive feedback from previous hosts they’ve rented from, or if they’ve uploaded a copy of their ID to Airbnb. Of course, it’s no comfort if something does go wrong. Bear in mind though, unless the room has its own entrance and good soundproofing, you might find it difficult, as not everyone wants to rent with two young children. Especially if there are other choices in the area which are child-free. Wed 27 May, 2015 7.58am What about nannies working locally? Some may not want to live in with the family they work for but would like the benefit of local accommodation. That would be a more trustworthy lodger type, and they will be CRB checked too. Wed 27 May, 2015 9.24am We used to do Airbnb when we lived in the Netherlands. We had a spare room and it was a good way to make a little extra money. We put in our ad that it was a family home, so all the people coming knew that it was likely to be crazy at mealtimes with toys around, etc. Usually, we only saw them for an hour a day (breakfast and evening). If you clearly put that you have kids, you’re not going to wind up with party people.
All threads from NappyValleyNet.com; users’ names have been omitted to protect individuals identities and although opinions have not been altered, posts have been edited in line with the Residents’ Journal house style
Have a meeting with her teacher one day after school and ask them. They’re the person best placed to help you and should be able to tell you your daughter’s areas of strength and the ones that need development. Parent evenings are generally a bit of a rush. A set meeting with a (slight) agenda can be very helpful for everyone involved and, hopefully, allows time for a more detailed discussion if this is what you need. Your daughter’s teacher should be able to advise you whether she’s ‘on track’ or otherwise for certain school-entry criteria. If you discover that there may be a few areas for development before your daughter is ready for the exams, then there’s plenty of time to think about tuition or other ways of supporting her in addition to the help she is receiving at school.

A summer boost Three Marsh & Parsons lettings experts discuss how the warmer weather affects their local markets

Summer is one of our busiest times for lettings. We had three competing offers on a property in the final weeks of June; an indicator of just how frantic the market is. Successful tenants are not always the ones with the highest offer, but often those who can match the requirements on tenancy, payment structures and with a preferable profile. There has also been a high demand for houses in school catchment areas, especially around The Vineyard and Orleans Primary, as well as young professionals seeking one and two-bedroom properties. Our Corporate & Relocation Services Team are working with some of the world’s largest corporations looking for accommodation in Richmond due to its great transport links, schools and beautiful surroundings.
The lettings market in Barnes is as strong as ever and we’re seeing a huge number of people registering. There have been more families looking to move in July, before children start school in September, with many of them focusing their search around the school catchment areas. We’re also seeing a lot of people who are refurbishing their own properties looking for short and long term tenancies whilst building work takes place over the summer months. At the time of writing, we have around six applicants for every available property, which, combined with our interlinked office network, is producing outstanding returns for landlords. My advice for them is that if they are hoping to secure tenants, they should do so before the end of August.
East Sheen comes into its own during the summer months as locals make the most of the vast, green open spaces of Richmond Park. There has been a big increase in the number of tenants registering and especially corporate clients relocating, keen to get away from the hustle and bustle of central London. We recently agreed a deal on a property in Denehurst Gardens for a family relocating from Hong Kong. The tenancy was secured for our client within 48 hours of having the offer agreed, much to their delight. I’d advise those seeking properties to be ready to commit to longer tenancies, as it not only secures the rental price in a rising market, but also makes you more desirable to landlords.

amptons would like to introduce a rare chance to purchase an outstanding plot with planning permission for the construction of a unique contemporary house of approximately 7900 sq ft, including a driveway and an underground garage. The exceptional futuristic design by Coup de Ville Architects maximises the superb views and has a low impact on the environment from both a visual and cost perspective. The plot is situated on Home Park Road, a sought-after address next to Wimbledon Park golf course. It is very conveniently located for access to Wimbledon Park Tube station and a good selection of local shops. Wimbledon Village offers an excellent range of exclusive boutiques, bars and restaurants and access to the Common, while the town centre provides further shopping and recreational facilities as well as a mainline and District Line station with services to Waterloo and beyond. The area is renowned for its good selection of schools in the private and state sector. n
