“The only source of knowledge is experience” – Albert Einstein

W

hat does it take to achieve enduring success? In this issue we ponder the question with the CEOs of two luxury brands. Maggie Henriquez has three decades of experience, but freely admits that joining champagne house Krug in 2008 made her feel “lost” for the first time – until she understood the brand’s history (page 82); while the CEO of tech firm Bang & Olufsen, Tue Mantoni, tells us that every design change must have a practical purpose, as he rejects the industry’s preoccupation with innovation for innovation’s sake (page 74). Both banking giant HSBC and watchmaker Zenith are celebrating 150 years in business in 2015. HSBC has chosen to mark its banking milestone by installing a sixmetre high sculpture in its 8 Canada Square HQ; it is the culmination of a two and a half year project involving more than 50 people and on page 20 we trace the evolution of the piece, named A Grain of Rice. Then on page 28, Robin Swithinbank charts the craftsmanship and corporate shifts that have defined Zenith, and looks to the future. Elsewhere, L.K.Bennett’s next marketing masterstroke is collaboration with model and style editor Laura Bailey. The London socialite has co-designed a range of clutch bags and shoes with the British retailer – and on page 40 she tells us how she’d wear them. Finally, with the Virgin Money London Marathon course passing through Canary Wharf this month, we take inspiration for 2016 and ask the experts for their training tips in our new health and fitness section (page 62).

marking time When HSBC wanted to mark 150 years of global banking it enlisted Cass Sculpture Foundation to produce a suitable monument. Here we trace the evolution of A Grain of Rice WORDS: imogen finlay

A

mid the more muted celebrations of HSBC’s 150th anniversary, a copper sculpture of nearly six metres in height has been installed in the lobby of 8 Canada Square inscribed with images and words reflecting the bank’s values, successes and workforce. Entitled A Grain of Rice and twinned with a taller version that stands in Hong Kong, the sculpture is the culmination of two and a half years’ work involving more than 50 people. The commissioning process was overseen by Cass Sculpture Foundation and the chosen product was produced by London-based design studio, Based Upon.

Q&A with… THE COMMISSIONING BODY: CASS SCULPTURE FOUNDATION FOR HSBC Clare Hindle, executive director of Cass Sculpture Foundation • What is the Cass Sculpture Foundation? The charity was founded in 1992 by Wilfred and Jeanette Cass. They realised upon retirement that there was a real lack of support for emerging artists, especially sculptors; if you wanted to make a monumental work you didn’t necessarily have access to funding. So, over the past 23 years we have paid for over 400 artists to make monumental works. We have a unique space where we have about 60 works on display in 23 acres of grounds. All the works are for sale and we sell them to important collectors and museums. We split the proceeds 50/50 with the artist once we’ve recouped our production costs; we then recycle that income back into the charity, supporting new commissions.

• What brief were you given for the HSBC project? HSBC wanted to celebrate its 150th anniversary by commissioning a sculpture that would represent 150 years of activity within the bank. The company wanted to celebrate the community that surrounds the bank – especially in Hong Kong. We approached 30 artists to begin with, 15 from China and 15 from the UK, and put those proposals to HSBC. I’m really pleased that HSBC chose a charitable organisation to manage the project because it knew right from the start that it didn’t want to choose a commercial commission; HSBC wanted it to be a collaborative project. • Why was A Grain of Rice chosen as the final sculpture? The Based Upon team managed to capture the HSBC effort of community and history. Its unique engraving technique also really hit the mark. Industry has been important to HSBC for 150 years ago and the concept of a grain of rice simplifies that unit of trade. sculpture.org.uk

Q&A with… THE DESIGNERS: BASED UPON Ian Abell, co-founder of Based Upon • Can you tell me about Based Upon? Based Upon is the creative studio that my brother and I founded in 2004. We’re best known for our commissioned work that is most often crafted in metal. When working on commissions we focus very much on narrative and we try to tell stories that are meaningful to the person or company that’s

commissioned the work; we believe work is more valuable to a commissioner over time if they’ve invested a part of themselves in it and the concept begins with them. However, we do have clients who will ask us to create something based on our own body of work. At the moment we have a number of our own pieces that explore the relationship between nature and man’s place within nature. • What is the concept behind A Grain of Rice? HSBC wanted a sculpture that was going to represent 150 years of the bank’s achievements and also still be standing and relevant in another 150 years’ time. Creating a physical grain of rice emerged as an idea in the early stages. An individual grain of rice is a fairly anonymous thing, but if you look closely enough at each grain of rice in a pile, it has unique characteristics. We felt that this was a metaphor for taking time to look at each individual closely and realising that there are great rewards in doing so. HSBC is a global brand but there are going to be key moments in history and individual people who have carried the bank and helped define it over the past 150 years. Another part of the brief was to create two sculptures – one that would stand in London and one in Hong Kong, so the concept needed to resonate equally well in the East and in the West. The grain of rice has been a core staple of Asian civilization and economy for as long as we have recorded history and to the western mind it symbolises the simplest possible unit of trade.

Kong, A Grain of Rice is positioned outside next to the HSBC headquarters that’s almost 50 storeys high so we could go as high as we like and opted for just north of ten metres. At 8 Canada Square we were limited by the ceiling height of the lobby and the piece is just under six metres tall. • Can you tell me about the engravings on A Grain of Rice? On the outer skin of the wall of the sculpture we engraved 150 pieces of content that we felt represented the 150 years of HSBC. The main input the bank had in the sculpture was in making sure the content was appropriate. We spent weeks in the archives in Hong Kong and London selecting appropriate content and then we put out a call to action to staff worldwide to submit two photographs – we wanted images of people over the past 150 years to be the backbone of the work. • How much do sculptures typically cost? It varies. A small commission can cost from £30,000 – £40,0000 while a complex commission can cost up to £250,000, but it depends on the materials used.

• Are there any differences between the two sculptures? We always felt that the correct thing to do was to use the same piece of work. The two are only different in size and the reason for that is site specific; in Hong

The Collectors’ Chronograph 

 The art of engraving Vacheron Constantin has updated its Métiers d’Art collection with two new timepieces equipped with beautiful, hand-engraved movements. The plates and bridges of the calibre 2260/1, which sits inside the Mecaniques Gravees 14Day Tourbillon, feature floral motifs line-engraved to a depth of 2/10ths of a millimetre – a fine example of art for art’s sake. Mecaniques Gravees 14-Day Tourbillon, £272,050, Vacheron Constantin, vacheron-constantin.com

Until a century ago, all pocket chronographs had only one pushpiece, housed in the crown, which successively handled their start, stop and zero-reset functions. In 1915, Breitling became the first brand to offer a wrist chronograph, and, in doing so, became the first company to create a pushpiece independent of the crown that controlled the three chronograph operations. It chose to place the push piece at two o’clock, where it remains on nearly every chronograph to this day. To celebrate the invention, Breitling is introducing a limited series of its Transocean model; equipped with a brand new, two-tiered, double column-wheel calibre, the Transocean Chronograph 1915 will provide its 1,915 owners with a handsome tribute to watchmaking history. Transocean Chronograph 1915, £6,790, Breitling (breitling.com)

American Dream Following Shinola, there’s another Michigan-based brand flying the flag for American watchmaking. A mash-up of industrial aesthetics and traditional Saxonian design (see Glashutte Original and A. Lange & Söhne for parallels), The Detroit Watch Company’s debut 1701 is a mechanical, self-winding timepiece with a 40-hour power reserve, available for a fraction of the price that you’d pay for a similar thing this side of the pond. 1701, $895, Detroit Watch Company, detroitwatchco.com

M

uch is made of a watch company’s ability to make a watch movement ‘in-house’. Verticalisation, to use an industrial and far less romantic term, carries a kudos you won’t find attached to the outsourcing alternative, as if a watch built using a third-party case and movement is somehow inferior to one with a mechanical heart made under the same roof as the case, dial, hands and so on. Forgetting the debate this provokes for now (you can find arguments for both sides), what is less equivocal is that the roots of the theory lie in a decision made by a man named Georges Favre-Jacot some 150 years ago. Favre-Jacot believed making a watch more accurate, more precise and more reliable was only possible if all the skills required were brought onto the same premises, and if the processes involved were industrialised. With Rolex at the apex of brands trumpeting this approach today, that hardly sounds a revolutionary idea – but at the time, no one else in Switzerland was doing it. In 1865, Favre-Jacot founded a watchmaking company in the town of Le Locle in the Swiss Jura, and began turning his vision into a reality. He must have been some fellow – he was only 22 at the time, and within 10 years he was giving work

to a third of the town’s working people. By the turn of the century, his company was producing 100,000 timepieces a year. At around the same time, Favre-Jacot gave his company a name, choosing an allegorical word that would associate it with the highest point in the firmament – he called it Zenith. To use today’s parlance, Zenith is still a manufacture brand. Bar a brief period last year when it flirted with the idea of outsourcing movements to a specialist manufacturer (the Pilot Montre d’Aéronef Type 20 Extra Special is one of a handful of Zenith watches with a Sellita movement), Zenith makes all of its own movements, on the same site in Le Locle where Favre-Jacot set up a century and a half ago. Very recent history has been good to Zenith. During the Noughties – if we must – Zenith was consumed by the bigger-is-better vortex, and rather lost its way. A change of management in 2009 brought an inventory clear-out, since then we’ve been spoiled with watches such as the Captain; all manner of models fuelled by the iconic El Primero calibre; and the pretty-and-smart Star ladies’ watch. Annual production had dropped to around 8,000 movements by the end of the last decade.

CANARY WHARF | 29

Now it’s north of 45,000, with demand said to be outsourcing supply. But Zenith hasn’t always had it its own way. After more than a century of success – the company has 2,333 prizes for chronometry, more than any other watch brand – the nadir came in the 1970s. In 1972, Zenith had been sold to the Chicago-based Zenith Radio Corporation, a US electronics giant, which determined the Swiss company would make nothing but quartz watches (as was the prevailing trend at the time), and in 1975 ordered a depleted, demoralised workforce – 850 of 1,000 Zenith staff had been laid off – to bin all tools and parts associated with mechanicals. That would have meant consigning Zenith’s greatest gift to watchmaking – the El Primero – to the history books. Originally introduced in 1969, El Primero was supposed to be the world’s first automatic chronograph calibre. It was conceived in 1962 and due for delivery in the brand’s centenary year, but Zenith’s ambitions led to numerous delays. It wanted its flagship

calibre to beat at 10 times a second, or 36,000 vibrations per second, making it the most accurate chronograph in the world. That aspiration also made it the most complex chronograph in the world, and development was constantly held up, so that when it finally launched it was no longer ‘el primero’, pipped at the post by the Calibre 11 automatic chronograph, a joint venture by Heuer, Breitling and the now defunct Buhren. Calibre 11 did not have the El Primero’s racing heart, but despite its superiority, only six years later Zenith’s masterpiece appeared destined for the scrapheap, jettisoned by its American namesake. Into the picture, though, came a group of Zenith employees, led by a man named Charles Vermot. Between them, they hid tools, parts and ébauches (unfinished movements), mothballing them in the hope that one day they might be needed again. They were. By the late 1970s, Zenith was in trouble. The model adopted by its American owners hadn’t foreseen the advance of the Japanese electronic giants, and they put Zenith up for sale.

“In 1999, Zenith was bought by LVMH and in the years since it has thrived”

It was bought in 1978 by a Swiss consortium and limped on for a few years, before luck played its hand. In the early 1980s, fellow Swiss watch brand Ebel approached Zenith with a request to revive the El Primero in its own collection. Vermot got wind of this, and revealed his covert operation of almost a decade previously. In 1984, as the green shoots of recovery were beginning to appear in the traditional watch industry, El Primero was brought back into production. It’s been in production ever since, is still the world’s most accurate series-produced chronograph, and is now a collectors’ favourite. Last year, Zenith launched a limited edition Charles Vermot version of the El Primero Chronomaster in tribute to the man who saved its most prized possession. These days, El Primero accounts for the lion’s share of Zenith’s annual output, but it splits a little of the limelight with sister calibre Elite, an ultra-thin automatic launched in 1994. In the early 1990s, it was becoming clear that quartz watches that ticked and beeped were disposable and rather inelegant compared to the delicate

micro-engineering and natural longevity of a mechanical watch, and Zenith’s addition to the canon of credible calibres was deliberately timed. Today, it enjoys a reputation as one of the calibres that helped revive the Swiss watch industry, an accolade it shares with El Primero. In 1999, Zenith was bought by LVMH and in the years since it has thrived. Sister brands TAG Heuer, Bulgari and Dior all use Zenith movements, as did Rolex through the 1990s in its iconic Daytona chronograph. Quality signifiers all. For its 150th anniversary year, Zenith has launched a number of spectacular pieces. One of the headliners is the Zenith Academy: Georges Favre-Jacot, a watch limited to 150 pieces with a fusée and chain mechanism, designed to deliver the watch’s 50-hour power reserve evenly, or at ‘constant force’. Another is the Academy: Christophe Colomb Hurricane Grand Voyage II, which features a ‘self-regulating gravity control module’ and a mesmerising hand-engraved and hand-painted case back. Columbus may have longsince sailed his last voyage, but Zenith’s adventure continues.

JEWELLERY Jewels, gems, pearls and diamonds; essential components of any jewellery collection WORDS: OLIVIA SHARPE

Jewels of the sea Fabergé recently re-hatched its one-of-a-kind egg object in the form of a new Pearl Egg in celebration of the jeweller’s forthcoming centenary. Created in collaboration with the Al-Fardan family, one of the industry’s most well-regarded pearl collectors, the egg’s design has been inspired by the precious gemstones’ formation in the oyster; it features a crafted mother-of-pearl exterior which carefully opens up through the use of a built-in mechanism to reveal its treasure – a unique 12.17-carat grey pearl sourced from the Arabian Gulf. A total of 139 white pearls (hand-selected by company chairman Hussain Ibrahim Al-Fardan from his private collection), adorn the outside, along with 3,305 diamonds and carved rock crystal. The piece is accompanied by a necklace of white pearls, diamonds and mother-of- pearl, finished with a 19.44-carat white pearl drop. Pearl Egg, POA, Fabergé, faberge.com

“The pieces offered are timeless, understated and classic in design and represent the sophistication and glamour of a true Hollywood legend. As a result, we’re anticipating great interest in the auction”

Winging it   Penny for your Thoughts After being given an exclusive sneakpreview of Tessa Packard’s latest fine jewellery collection, Fat Free, back in January, we have been keen to see the finished results. The irresistible spring range sees a playful new side to the designer who was inspired by the quintessential English penny sweet to create her fourth line. With mouthwatering pieces including a gummy bear necklace, fried egg earrings, a waffle heart bracelet and an ice-cream ring, it’s almost good enough to eat. However, be warned: each piece, crafted in 18-carat white or yellow gold and incorporating precious diamonds and gemstones, will be sure to cost you a pretty penny. Fat Free collection, available from 19 March, Tessa Packard London, tessapackard.com

Those of you who regularly frequent Loulou’s members’ club will already be familiar with the charms of Shepherd Market and its surrounding streets but may be unaware of another one of its gems: Guy & Max. The unassuming jewellery boutique, founded by two brothers, is a contemporary treasure trove of unique fine jewellery pieces made in-house using 3D printing technology alongside traditional techniques. One of the latest collections to catch our eye is Phoenix: inspired by the concept of movement within a bird’s wing, the innovative structural design (invented by Max), enables the metal wings to move freely as if in flight. guyandmax.com

Sporting attitude For spring, Berluti’s new collection is called Sport Couture, which as a concept comes down to beautifully tailored pieces with all the trappings of luxury – fabric, fit, elegance – but with a slightly sportier, wearable edge. For the collection, Berluti has introduced two new lightweight but durable fabrics: a waxed linen with a paper-light touch, and a silk and linen poplin that’s treated with a ceramic glaze to give it a hardwearing, leather-like finish. Plus, the brand has developed some truly innovative craftsmanship to put the pieces together – Berluti drew on origami for pattern-cutting inspiration, creating handmade pleats, collars and lapels through folding and therefore removing the need for sewing and interlining. For men’s fashion, it’s a case of style meets substance. berluti.com

model maker British style stalwart L.K.Bennett has collaborated with Laura Bailey on a bold capsule collection – and the model and fashion ambassador is pleased with the result WORDS: melissa emerson

FEATURE

O

perating from 135 retail locations across the globe, 88 of which are within the UK, and with no sign of its global expansion ambitions fading, L.K.Bennett seems older than its 25 years. In fact, the brand is a relatively young child of the 90s; it was founded by Linda Bennett in 1990. Now a leading British retailer with a well-known presence on our high streets (and in Canary Wharf), its fan base has gained a boost in recent years from long-time advocate of the brand, the Duchess of Cambridge, who has been spotted wearing its shoes and pieces from its ready-to-wear collections on numerous occasions. The influence that a well-dressed British style ambassador can have on L.K.Bennett’s image seems to have weighed heavily on the brand’s decision to welcome multi-talented writer, model and British Vogue contributing editor Laura Bailey into its fold this season. This spring it has unveiled a limited edition capsule collection, L.K.Bennett London by Laura Bailey, which she helped to design. Although, neither of the two sides are strangers to the collaborative process. In 2013 L.K.Bennett collaborated with street style favourite Caroline Issa of Tank Magazine to produce travel-inspired accessories, while Laura Bailey has designed a bag range for Radley and now heads up a luxury jewellery company with close friend Sheherazade Goldsmith, making customisable keepsake lockets and – more recently – earrings, under the brand name Loquet London. Robert Bensoussan, L.K.Bennett’s chief executive admits he considers Laura Bailey to be a “true icon of British style.” So, with the brand’s love for Laura already established, why was this project in particular so appealing to her? “It’s always

flattering to be asked to work with a beloved and respected brand,” Bailey admits, while taking time out of her schedule to speak to me from LA. “I love the teamwork, and the combination of creative freedom and business support, so I relished this opportunity.” L.K.Bennett’s dedicated in-house design team was on hand to make sure the technical details were taken care of but her enthusiasm to play a big part in the project shows – Laura was involved at every stage of the collaborative process from initial brainstorming sessions with the design team and the creation of a concept, to building mood boards and sketching out ideas, up until the very first samples were produced and then shot. The overall process lasted around four to five months, and although we’re told the final edit wasn’t easy to decide on, it eventually resulted in five shoe designs being chosen, alongside one style of clutch bag. “We drew and sampled too many options and the tricky point was choosing what to let go, but obviously the edit is crucial in a capsule collection. Less is more,” she says. Starting at £195 a pair, the designs include patent flats, a more casual open-toe flat sandal, a pointed stiletto, a chunky heeled open sandal and last but not least, an ankle-strap kitten heel – a style that L.K.Bennett has always favoured. The choice to include elegant flats in the collection is a pragmatic one. Although Laura has in the past claimed to be more than capable of running in extremely high heels, which we can easily believe, she also accepts that it’s not always the most practical or accessible choice for the target audience of busy working women, which in her case is a role that also encompasses being a mother to two young children. Inspired by Laura’s love of travel, and more

specifically the Amalfi Coast (think yachts, vintage swimwear, citrus parasols and Vespa rides), all of the shoes feature bright colours, with a palette of rich blues, warm orange and sunny yellow lifted straight from the beach, making them, in Laura’s eyes, equally appropriate for “London pavements or Capri sands”. Graphic zig zag stripes add a bold retro finish, and as seen on one of Laura’s original mood boards from the early stages of the project, reference the pattern’s popularity on swimsuits during the 1960s and 1970s. Laura first visited the Amalfi Coast when in her twenties and has spent many of her summers there since, whether for shoots, family holidays or a “stolen weekend”. “It was important for the capsule to reflect my love of travel, and of the Amalfi Coast in particular,” she emphasises, with the “Mediterranean spirit and landscapes” found there clearly having left a strong impression on her. With that in mind, the Italian connotations don’t end there. Each pair of shoes in the collection is named after a female star from the particularly rich period of Italian cinema spanning the 1950s and 1960s. They include director Michelangelo Antonioni’s muse Monica Vitti and Claudia Cardinale, the beauty queen turned actress who was renowned for her dark-eyed beauty and sultry interpretations of Sicilian life. As Laura succinctly puts it, these women resonate with the spirit of the collection because they are simply “chic and brave”. Laura’s own attitude

and style philosophy are drawn from a similar mind set. She advises that the key to dressing well is to have “no rules, but some kind of combination of confidence, classicism, and risk”. Having been so closely involved with the project, it’s hard for her to pick out a favourite design. “I change my mind all the time but today my favourite of the collection is the navy and red Claudia style – it has a high chunky heel and a flattering ankle cross-strap,” she explains. It’s the collection’s signature piece, and with style never far from her thoughts, she advises on what to pair it with. “I love this shoe with a cropped trouser. My favourites are checked Prada ones or I’d wear these shoes with a midi-length skirt from & Other Stories and a vintage blouse.” It sounds like a wardrobe that many of us would like to take a peek inside, although Laura down plays the size of her closet. “My own wardrobe is average-sized but I am slowly taking over my boyfriend’s and kids’ cupboards so am definitely due an Oxfam clearout,” she says. There’s always room for one more thing however, as she confesses what she most desires this spring is “a skinny silky polo-neck by Emilia Wickstead in dusky rose pink”. The assured choice ranks alongside a list of wardrobe staples she won’t be parting with any time soon; when asked to pick her favourite items, she rapidly reels off a list that includes: “Frame black denim jeans, Bella Freud knits, Margaret Howell shirts, Bodas lingerie and Chanel pearls and tweed.” “The one piece I’ve worn the most over the past twenty years is probably my classic Burberry trench, which is finally falling to pieces,” she adds. While one might assume that someone for whom fashion is both

a passion and paycheck would be an advocate of shopping online, it’s not quite true. “I do shop online, but mostly for presents. My favourite kind of shopping will always be a wander around a market, be it in Portobello, a brocante in St Tropez or in the wilds of Mexico,” she says. “I love London’s [independent] shops too – Lutyens and Rubinstein for books, Honeyjam for toys, Couverture & The Garbstore.” Being so closely connected to the fashion industry (Laura is an ambassador for Chanel and a cultural ambassador for the British Fashion Council, as well as juggling her work with British Vogue) means there is a never-ending supply of style inspiration for her to absorb. “I have somehow ended up with a gang of ridiculously beautiful, stylish and clever girlfriends, including Thandie Newton, Alice Temperley, Poppy Delevingne and Stella McCartney. They are all original spirits. And my main desire was simply to create a collection I couldn’t wait to wear and share with my friends.” Shoes from £195, clutch £275, L.K.Bennett, Jubilee Place

OWN THE NIGHT The inspiration for Tom Ford’s spring beauty collection is 1970s rock and roll. Rich indigo tones are contrasted with vivid flashes of teal and violet in its new colour palette. While the Black Plum and Teal Intense mascaras aren’t for the faint-hearted, its Eye Colour Duos are clever; applying the lighter eye shadow shade over the darker hue of ripe plum, raw jade or crushed indigo will create an iridescent finish. Their gel texture also means that using them with a wet brush unleashes a bolder colour. Raw Jade Eye Color Duo, £46, Tom Ford, Waitrose Food, Fashion & Home, Canada Place

Notes from

backstage From ‘strobing’ to the new smoky eye, here are the best new beauty looks from the S/S 15 runways WORDS: AIMEE LATIMER Issey Miyake

Lip Cover in Ruby £22.50, Lip Definer, £16.50, both uk.burberry.com

1 Disco lights Backstage: Skin took a breather from the heavy contouring trend at Issey Miyake with a new look dubbed ‘strobing’. Whereas contouring creates shadows to build definition, strobing uses iridescent highlights instead, which overall leads to lighter, brighter and uplifted skin. On the day, MAC Strobe Cream (£24.50, MAC, Jubilee Place) was applied over the models’ features in a cross formation – on the forehead, bridge of the nose and chin, and also the cheekbones – to create an ethereal glow. How to wear it: Pulling off this look takes ground work; it all begins with good skincare, and MAC Strobe Cream moisturises and brightens skin too. Enhance prepped skin with a simple touch of mascara and a dewy lip gloss – simple finishes keep the look light and romantic.

Red alert

2

Backstage: At the Burberry show,

lips did the talking thanks to a simple burst of ruby coloured lipstick and liner that suited all skin tones. The rest of the complexion was left with a natural finish, with eyes defined by the lightest touch of tawny shadow that tapered out in the corners, and mascara. How to wear it: Make a strong shade go the distance by sweeping on the lipstick, lightly blotting with a tissue and then repeating. Then lightly dust lips with a translucent power such as Burberry’s Sheer Powder (£31) to set the colour. If you’re still concerned about the colour fading and being left with a dreaded ring of liner, try completely filling your lips in with pencil before applying lipstick – the liner’s waxy texture will help lock the colour in.

Jenny Packham

4 Purple reign Backstage: Make-up artist Charlotte

Lift off Backstage: Big hair swooshed down the runway at Jenny Packham. The style was less Dynasty and owed more to healthy, loose curls with lots of volume and shine. Hair was styled using Moroccanoil products. Treatment Light (£32, Boots, Canada Place) and Hydrating Styling Cream (£22.85, Boots, as before) were mixed and applied throughout damp strands to create shine. Next, Root Boost (£18.85, Boots, as before) was used for lift and volume, before hair was roughly blow-dried, set with a deep side parting and curled with a curling tong. The curls were gently brushed through for a softer wave reminiscent of the show’s muse, Marilyn Monroe. How to wear it: With attitude.

3

Tilbury worked her magic again, creating a playful look inspired by a blossoming hibiscus flower at Matthew Williamson using Benefit. To create the right pop of pinky purple, artists mixed together two Hydra-smooth Lip Colours in Fling Thing and Dare Me (£15 each, Boots, Canada Place) and patted them onto eyelids. Next, Creaseless Cream Shadow in Always a Bridesmaid (£15.50, Boots, as before) was applied to the crease, centre, inner corner and lower lash line to deepen the depth of colour, and topped with They’re real! Mascara (£19.50, Boots, as before). How to wear it: A bright purple eye colour is best worn as a light, frosted lavender during daytime, and as a sultry plum for evening.

5

Backstage: Pat McGrath, Max Factor’s global creative design director, created a sultry bronzed shadow for eyes at Roberto Cavalli to achieve a carefree, summer-ready look. To create the tan smoky eye, McGrath applied Masterpiece Colour Precision Eye Shadow in Coffee (£6.99, Boots, Canada Place) across the whole lid and lower lash line. Next, Excess Shimmer shadow in Onyx was blended along the crease and the outer corners, and a precise sweep of Excess Shimmer shadow in Crystal (both £7.99, Boots, as before) was added along the upper lash line for a brightening contrast. How to wear it: As it is. This is one of the few runway beauty looks that transfers instantly to real life, and the use of lighter shades makes it a subtle way to wear a smoky eye in the daytime. Pair with well-groomed brows for an extra polished finish.

Through the looking glass

If you think of shaving as a simple grooming task, think again. An exclusive behind the scenes tour at the Gillette research and development HQ unearths some rather nifty science WORDS: Jennifer Mason

H

ushed voices. Confiscated cameras. White coats. Since Gillette launched its manly morning shave into the public consciousness in 1989 with the tagline ‘the best a man can get’, its research and development team have been working under tight security, continuously tasked with developing market-leading technology to improve the closeness and comfort of the shaving experience. In February, the company opened the doors of its HQ in Reading to a select few journalists for a Willy Wonka-style behind the scenes tour to mark the launch of its latest toy, the Flexball. The razor allows the blades to move in a three-dimensional direction over the contours of the face, reducing the amount of strokes needed and minimising damage and discomfort to the skin. Here’s how. Fusion ProGlide with Flexball, £12, Gillette, Boots, Canada Place

THE BLADES The razor cartridge remains the same as the traditional Fusion Proglide, making for an easier transition to the new Flexball handle. The independentlysprung blades are stabilised at the centre and positioned 1.05mm apart with pinpoint accuracy. Each blade is welded at 13 points to a blade support the width of a human hair.

the materials Once cut into individual segments from the original steel ribbon, the blades are coated to enhance the performance – causing less tugging and more comfort. Blade springs on either side of the cartridge adjust to the irregular skin surface and help to slice through beard hairs, which have the strength of copper wire.

GROOMING

THE MOTION The new Flexball technology furthers the typical ‘forwards and backwards’ twodimensional movement of previous designs by adding a ‘side to side’ movement on the 3D axis. The new range of motion means fewer strokes are needed to remove hairs, increasing comfort and decreasing the risk of irritation or skin damage.

THE FORCE

THE PIVOT The movement of the new Flexball technology has been calculated exactly. The ball pivots exactly 12 degrees in either direction, a movement controlled by stops on either side, as well as a carefully calibrated spring, which also prevents excessive oscillation.

Each man, and each hair in a man’s beard, is different. For this reason, the shaving process changes. Research shows that shavers use between 100 and 200 strokes during a shave lasting anything from 30 seconds to 20 minutes. Men apply from 50g to 2kg of force on their razor. With such differing results, the Gillette handle must meet all requirements.

the handle the guinea pigs Eighty men a day come to Gillette’s R&D centre in Reading to shave, using test prototypes in the specially designed booths, where researchers can monitor all aspects of the process. Gillette tested that its new Flexball technology activates in 80 per cent of shaving strokes, offering a significant improvement to the quality of a shave.

The handle has been ergonomically designed for comfort, flexibility and safety, with soft-touch secure grip points to prevent slipping and to allow an easy 360-degree turn by the precision trimmer on the back of the cartridge, even when the handle is wet.

Participants work their way through four levels, each requiring a 12 week commitment, beginning with deepWORK, a barefoot, holistic exercise that strengthens the core before weights are introduced, and ending with the IRON CROSS, which after each session stimulates 72 hours of fat burning for women or muscle building for men. Best foot forward

Kathrine Switzer, recently admitted to the USA National Women’s Hall of Fame, was the first woman to run the Boston Marathon in 1967. Her experience of being attacked by an official for doing so has driven a life’s commitment to running and social change How did the experience of competing in the Boston Marathon affect you? A marathon teaches you so much. I became both radicalised and inspired by being [forcibly obstructed] by an official, to create opportunities for other women in running. It helped me to be pretty fearless in other ways, too. Is running still a male-dominated sport? Fifty three per cent of race participants are now women in the USA and I see this trend in Europe now too. Running gives women fitness, self-esteem and empowerment; it’s inexpensive, and it can fit into a busy day.

together, or even a casual football game. This can create an interesting hobby, career, or business. Girls need programmes at an earlier age so they can be fit and empowered for life. What initial goals should someone set if they want to begin running? Don’t dream about it – do it. Make a commitment to go out every day; write a goal down, start walking and add small jogs. Get a good pair of shoes from a shop where the sales people run.

Do you think attitudes towards women in sport overall are changing? Definitely. Lean, fit women are now an image of beauty. Their professionalism is greatly rewarded in some sports such as tennis, golf, and marathon running. When a woman chooses to be an athlete, she is no longer criticised but applauded.

Why did you launch the 261 Women’s Marathon? It became important to create a woman-centric event that was more about inclusion and less about being fast and talented. Why 261? Because that is my old bib number from the Boston Marathon, and totally organically it became a number symbolising “fearlessness in the face of challenge”. My biggest victory in life is seeing women empowered by running and going on to change other aspects of their lives in a positive way.

What can women do to promote equality in sport? When something does not exist for them, they must go out and create it. It is easy to put a jogging group

An introduction to

Crossrail Place

When Crossrail Place opens on 1 May, three years ahead of the station, it will mark the completion of a seven year project to enhance Canary Wharf’s already diverse lifestyle offering with a further 100,000 sq ft of retail, dining and entertainment space

Architecture and Art The four-floor development will be distinguished by its landmark structure, which includes a 30m high lattice-like roof, pavilions and a roof garden that is open to the public. Complementing Canary Wharf’s collection of 65 permanent artworks, the Adam’s Passage approach to Crossrail Place will feature an abstract steel sculpture by celebrated artist Michael Lyons, as part of Canary Wharf Group’s long-standing commitment to supporting British creative talent.

Leisure and Lifestyle Crossrail Place will champion work/life balance with a relaxed coffee house, a juice bar and a sports bar and grill, set to become social hotspots. Canary Wharf’s range of international cuisine will be further bolstered by the addition of Japanese, American, Mexican and Indian-inspired restaurants. Elsewhere, fashionable spinning studio Psycle London will cater for health and fitness enthusiasts and Canary Wharf will welcome its first boutique cinema, Everyman Canary Wharf that offers a unique blend of spacious seating, in-theatre refreshments and the latest film releases.

Need to Know Four architecture firms worked to design Crossrail Place, each focusing on a different part of the development. The structure of Crossrail Canary Wharf is estimated to have cost £500 million to build. The roof is 310m long – approximately the size of One Canada Square laid on its side. Crossrail Place has 8 dining destinations. Some of the plant species grown in the rooftop garden were first introduced to Britain through Canary Wharf’s docks. The first tree to be planted was a magnolia tree.

FEATURE

Bang & Olufsen’s Moment As the technology brand celebrates its 90th anniversary, Bang & Olufsen CEO Tue Mantoni talks about the company’s success with AMY WELCH – and reveals what’s next

CANARY WHARF | 75

“Y

ou don’t have to buy anything to go there, you can visit and have an experience and enjoy what we do – it’s a place where you can see the best of the best.” Just under 12 years after Bang & Olufsen opened its outpost in South Colonnade, Canary Wharf, Tue Mantoni, the CEO of the technology firm, is talking about the ethos behind its stores, which he describes as “a very small chapter in a long Bang & Olufsen book”. This year the brand celebrates its 90th anniversary and although it prides itself on innovation, Mantoni insists there is no chance it will shift its focus from conventional store-based retailing to online-only operations any time soon. “Bang & Olufsen is an experience brand,” he says. “It’s about a lot more than selling a TV or speakers. It’s about the dream of technology being simple and easy to use, where technology adapts to your life; you don’t have to adapt your life around the technology.” To this end, the company updates its designs for audio-visual gadgets and home interfaces, when there is a purpose. “There’s a lot of innovation in the industry with no purpose,” he admits. “Innovation should not just be done for the sake of technology, it should be done because it improves people’s lives.” In March, Bang & Olufsen decided that what the consumer wanted was the BeoSound Moment, a wireless music system with the world’s first touch-sensitive wood interface. Analysing users’

listening patterns, the device suggests music based on personal taste and time of day; songs are compiled from a user’s own music collection and the online streaming service Deezer (deezer.com). “At a time when everyone is looking at smaller screens or bigger screens, when something comes with touch-sensitive wood, everybody is looking at it thinking ‘wow, here is finally something innovative and new’,’’ says Mantoni. A sleek aesthetic has underpinned Bang & Olufsen’s success since the 1970s, when the company started to come into its own as a premium brand, committed to following a path of clean lines and simple aluminium surfaces with few controls. “When the competition signalled innovation and technology by adding a lot more knobs and dials and buttons and flashing lights, we said that technology is all about simplicity,” explains Mantoni. This style reflects his own preferences when it comes to design. “I like things that last. I love objects that are beautiful but that also have a purpose. [Technology] shouldn’t be fashionable; if you look at many of our products, they may be ten or 20 or 30 years old but they don’t look antiquated.” Pushed to pick his favourite gadget, he opts for a rotating speaker wall – “you get that element of surprise,” – he laughs. The company’s next project – to mark its 90th year – will give an Art Deco makeover to six successful Bang & Olufsen products including the BeoPlay A9 music system and the elegant, lightweight BeoPlay H6 headphones by crafting them in walnut wood and rose gold-coloured aluminium. The style was adapted in partnership with fashion designer Stine Goya and is titled The Love Affair collection to reflect customer loyalty over the years – Mantoni explains that the aim was simple, of course: “The customers need to be excited by what we do.” Bang & Olufsen, South Colonnade

Maggie Henriquez is the first Hispanic female CEO of a champagne house and isn’t afraid to admit the challenges she’s faced. Here, in her own words, she explains what luxury and equality mean to her interview by gabrielle lane

I

arrived at Krug in 2008, during the financial crisis, and I knew that we had to communicate Krug in a way that was easier to understand. My approach to the word ‘luxury’ was different because I grew up in a family where everything was about generosity, discretion and elegance; I mistakenly thought luxury was ostentatious. For the first time, with 31 years of experience, I was lost. A colleague reassured me and said “don’t worry, things will take time.” Luxury takes time.

it needs to evolve. It is not supposed to be drunk in flutes; it deserves a white wine glass so that it can breathe. It also works so well with food. Give champagne another role.

It’s critical to understand what the challenges in a business are and to be honest about them. If you understand them, then you can prioritise. I had to understand the brand values of Krug and share my understanding with the organisation – then you can define a vision. If people understand why we exist then they understand where we are going and it becomes a project of the individual, not just a company. Then you can succeed.

The price of a luxury product must be high. It is about ensuring quality and forging an emotional connection with people – you cannot offer discounts. The distribution of Krug is not direct so to ensure a good experience for the customer, we have 180 brand ambassadors. We aim to have 350 eventually.

Luxury is a being, a person that is being kept alive by innovation. We needed to connect with the family house of Krug, even though Krug is part of LVMH. We still have sixth generation members of the house involved in the business and we needed to go and look into the archives with a historian in a process that took three to four years, to learn their story. Champagne has a prestigious image. It is connected with celebration and joy but

“Luxury is a being, it’s a person that is being kept alive by innovation”

We have women in the world that are making their own money and champagne is the preferred drink of women. I am 59. We are the first generation with female business leaders and we must continue to open doors for women to progress. While I disagree with introducing boardroom quotas, women are still a minority in the workplace and we need help – we shouldn’t just assume that equality is on its way. The most successful companies are those that are bringing diversity into their workforce. I love to present Krug to people who don’t know the brand. It’s the story of a man who went beyond limits to achieve the best quality. He created a different approach by bringing together wines from different years to make the richest of champagnes. He was not afraid. I see people’s faces when they try it and it’s so touching – after all it’s my job to protect the house for centuries to come. The Friday Feeling Boisdale of Canary Wharf is mid-makeover, and is still as much fun on a Friday evening WORDS: REBECCA parks

A

ccording to an insider, Boisdale of Canary Wharf is mid-makeover – albeit a subtle one: some of the bar stools and high tables are to be replaced with banquette seating and the first floor will receive new artwork, lighting and vintage rugs. The aim is to make the bar on floor one and the restaurant on floor two feel more intimate. Although, to be fair, the atmosphere at Boisdale has always been good.

“Your food won’t turn up assembled into pictures… but you will have a great time” The patronage of Jools Holland means its evening jazz performances add something extra to cocktails and steak dinners, which are some of the things that Boisdale does best, against its existing backdrop of red walls and tartan carpets. Dishes on the main restaurant menu include pork belly with celeriac and apple remoulade and cod fillet with shrimps, cucumber and dill. There’s even the option of a whole lobster with garlic, parsley and chilli (when entertaining clients perhaps), but what I’d recommend you do when dining here is order meat. The Boisdale grill includes 30-day aged rib-eye cuts, tournedos fillets and rib of beef on the

bone and if you visit on a Friday evening, as my friend and I did, you will feel full for the entire weekend. The medium-rare rib-eyes we ate were well cooked and well seasoned, served with french fries, wilted spinach and peppercorn and béarnaise sauces that were buttery and rich. We had started our meals with potted smoked mackerel with horseradish chantilly and toast, which was smooth and light, and the smoked salmon. The latter consisted of a platter of wafersliced fish that was served very simply with lemon juice and was large enough to share. Boisdale isn’t pretentious: your food won’t turn up assembled into pictures on plates, but you will have a great time. With that in mind, from the cocktail list I’d opt for the Perfect Lady. With a recipe dating from 1936, the vintage drink is a blend of Tanqueray gin, crème de peche and lemon. It tastes both smoky and citrusy and is ideal to nurse until the jazz starts. Feasts fit for a king aside, one of our favourite ways to enjoy Boisdale is still with a burger from its bar menu (ideally stacked with avocado, jalapeños and tomato). Or for a hearty, no fuss business lunch the new lunch two-course set menu starts at a very reasonable £11.95 and food reflects that of an English brasserie – think a mix of classic pies and lighter salads. And we do like the new lamps. Boisdale of Canary Wharf, Cabot Place, boisdale.co.uk, 020 7715 5818

Las Vegas discovers a sophisticated side to America’s playground

AIMEE LATIMER

H

ow could you not want to visit Las Vegas? Curiosity alone surely must tempt you to discover what it is about this lively city dedicated to pleasure that could possibly draw more than 41 million visitors a year. Personally, considering I very much liked Disneyland as a child, I could only imagine I’d appreciate this seemingly adult version, with shorter queues, stronger drinks and no clock off time. Once there, though, you’ll discover a wonderfully sophisticated side to Vegas too where, with its

unabashed indulgence of all the good things in life, uses its incredible means to bring together the world’s best in performance, food and shopping into one strip – the Strip – in what is the best oasis you could ever hope to find in a desert. First comes getting there, and Virgin Atlantic flights from Gatwick take off and land at the most civilised times meaning when jetting off on a weekday you can land early afternoon and still have a full evening on your first night. Even in economy class, a generous stream of food and drink and plenty of movies makes the hours sail by. Although, it being bound for Vegas, you are guaranteed to have a couple of stag parties aboard. We had one guy dressed as a banana, which I advise against: hilarious on the bus ride to the airport, less amusing to the famously humourless American security staff on the other side. The Cosmopolitan (cosmopolitanlasvegas.com), where I stayed, is one of the newer hotels on the Strip having opened in 2010. From the gleaming lobby through to the winding casino that opens out onto the Strip, its whole expanse is drenched in red and purple light. And, unlike some of the older, more heavily carpeted casinos around, there’s a sleek, modern atmosphere that during its short life has enticed the likes of Jay-Z and Lady Gaga to

perform there. The hotel’s crowning glory is its Chandelier Bar, where as the name suggests, a three tier bar is draped within a shimmering curtain of hanging crystals (leading it to be the most Instagrammed spot in Vegas). The rooms at The Cosmopolitan – my terrace suite had two flat screens, a kitchenette and a window-facing bathtub with views across the city – don’t skimp on the amenities, and hugely generous floor plans seem to come as standard across the city’s hotels. However, if you’re in the mood for something more classic, there is no shortage of choices. The Mandarin Oriental (mandarinoriental.com) – one of the few hotels without a casino – is one of the more high-end spots on the Strip, with stylish and warmly decorated rooms, like the home you wished you owned. Its lounge, which serves the most delicately beautiful afternoon tea, overlooks The Crystals (theshopsatcrystals.com), a mass of luxury shops whose dramatic structure replicates its name. Open until late, The Crystals is home to some of the most flagship premium stores in the world. Or there’s Nobu (caesars.com), a hotel within a hotel discretely tucked in Caesars Palace, and part of the same celebrity-favourite franchise that’s restaurant is famous in London. Here the rooms

are beautifully styled in contemporary Japanese décor; a clean break from the flickering lights bathing the city and offering a dose of refined luxury that invites you to experience some opulence without feeling vulgar. And if you have a spare $30,000 a night – or have lost $8m on the tables and so are invited to stay free as a condolence – there’s always the Nobu Villa. It’s Caesars’ only rooftop villa, has unparalleled panoramic views over the Strip and a terrace that features a BBQ pit, zen garden and a whirlpool that, rather committedly, had to be craned in. A good stop to make early on in your trip to get a taste of the history of Las Vegas is a visit to the Neon Museum and Boneyard (neonmuseum.org), where the old, enormous and riotously colourful casino signs are kept on display. A detailed tour will begin with the days of mobster-run Westernthemed casinos. Plus, even though it’s only a short drive away, it gives you the opportunity to see a more rural side of the city as the melee of the city begins to thin into a rolling desert decorated by billboards advertising grinning lawyers in a style very much like ‘Better Call Saul’; the infamous long line of quickie wedding chapels and their neighbouring tuxedo rental joints. Plus, there’s some places of local colour like the Heart Attack

CANARY WHARF | 97

Grill (heartattackgrill.com). Run by a cardiologist, it’s a place where you have to sign a disclaimer to order, which is unsurprising considering the 10,000 calorie triple bypass burger has literally left one diner dead in his chair. There are some perks though, if you’re more than 350lbs you get to eat for free. Only in America. Back on the Strip you’ll find a very different dining scene and a much lower ‘at table’ death rate. Dining in Las Vegas is big business and there are 17 Michelin-starred restaurants here. It’s a city where the banners picturing chefs posed cross armed like boxers hang storeys long down the front of casinos – much bigger than the signs advertising the Britney Spears show at Planet Hollywood. Celebrity chefs and famous chains have a huge draw and hotels will fight for the biggest names, so

Mandarin Bar bar at Mandarin Oriental

in terms of luxury dining per cubic foot, you’d be hard tasked to beat the offering here. And, despite the popularity of these restaurants, the fact that most tourists only stay a short while means you can normally get a table at some of the top spots with a reservation made only a day before.

“Celebrity chefs have a huge draw and hotels will fight for the biggest names” For some ceremony there’s the two Michelin-star Restaurant Guy Savoy (guysavoy.com) in Caesars Palace, where the eponymous French chef brings a touch of Parisian flair through delicate courses and a mind-blowing truffle budget. However, a standout experience – in a city designed to create standout experiences – is Guy Savoy’s Krug Chef’s Table, the only one in the United States. Here, up to six guests have a private dining room with an intimate view straight into the kitchen and enjoy a tasting menu designed to pair perfectly with Krug’s prestige cuveé champagnes. Sticking the tune of fine dining we also experienced dinner at Joël Robuchon Restaurant (joel-robuchon.net) in the MGM Grand. And I say experienced because ‘ate’ seems too fleeting a way to describe another private dining room in the three Michelin-starred restaurant that’s all mahogany wood and sweeping purple curtains. The food was fantastic, as reflected from our oohing and ahhing as each dish was placed before

us. Any restaurant where the lettuce – a garnish on any other occasion – soup was one of the best things I ate all week, is a restaurant worth visiting. Now, being the type to own a designated pair of slippers just for taking the bin out, I was concerned my late nights and Caligula-esque dining extravagance had etched a multitude of sins onto my face, so I booked in for a Hydra Facial at Caesars Palace’s Qua Baths and Spa (caesars.com). In the spa, with its warm stone loungers, towelling robes and thick slippers to pad around between the bubbling whirlpools and herbal steam rooms, you easily forget the pace of life outside. This facial was no quick spritz to whale music, though, oh no – this was a full-throttle toxin exorcism that including an acid peel, microdermabrasion and zaps of LED light therapy – everything you need to leave with a refreshed glow that suggests you stopped at that first round of margaritas. I recommend it. It’s hard to make a checklist for Vegas when there’s just so much happening: the hotels only make around 30 per cent of their revenue through gambling; the rest is dining, shows and entertainment. However, my suggestions lead with O by Cirque du Soleil (cirquedusoleil.com) at the Bellagio, which is just the most fantastical display of choreographed madness, with the performers putting on a show above a stage that glides from a diving-deep water tank to a flat plane for dancing. Another must do is a tour of Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam, and to do it right, you should do it by helicopter. Maverick (maverickhelicopter.com) charters six-person choppers that land you straight

into the canyon (rock music pumping through your headphones all the way) for champagne. Plus, with the tour taking only around four hours, you only need to free up a morning. Or to see the whole city illuminated at night like spilled glitter, take a spin in the High Roller (caesars.com), a towering London Eye-type structure with unparalleled views. Having only tokenly touched a slot machine once and having been left baffled by its lack of instructions and aggressive beeping, I can assure you this is a place where your trip can be whatever you want it to be. Whatever your tastes, it’s hard to luck out on holiday in Las Vegas. Virgin Atlantic flies direct to Las Vegas’ McCarran Airport from both Gatwick (daily) and Manchester (twice a week). Prices start from £310 per person plus £354 tax. For more information please visit virgin-atlantic.com or call 0844 209 7777

Life of

Thai

From bustling cities to secluded beachside resorts, Gabrielle Lane explores different sides to one of the most popular south-east Asian destinations

travel

T

hailand has a reputation for being a destination you don’t have to plan for: according to almost any acquaintance you ask, life in southeast Asia involves eating mangoes by the side of the road, perusing street food markets and pitching up at beachfront cabins in little more than a kaftan. But I am simply not that kind of woman. And even after I visited for two weeks in December, I was not even close. If you’re going to visit Thailand, I think you should do it properly. With a selection of the finest properties and resorts in existence, Thailand lives up to its place on many a bucket list – juxtaposing local culture with high society; deserted beaches with glittering nightspots and serene spa treatments with decadent suppers. Far away from the throngs of youthful Full Moon revellers, the country is regaining its

place as a luxury retreat. More than 4.2 million tourists visited during the first three months of 2015. Thailand is popular – but it can still be very exclusive.

LEBUA AT STATE TOWER, BANGKOK The feeling of surrealism that I had when arriving in Bangkok at 11pm, is still as potent for me now as it was then. My friend and I were taken to our first hotel – Lebua at State Tower – by the hotel’s chauffeur-driven Mercedes. The night was warm but deceptively still; the roads uncharacteristically quiet as we peered out through tinted windows into the darkness, our journey sound-tracked by the saloon’s playlist of opera music. Within the hour we saw the city from 50-storeys high. Standing at 810 ft tall, Lebua occupies Bangkok’s second highest tower and its twobedroom suites have colossal stone balconies on

two sides. At night, the glistening lights of the surrounding skyscrapers bathe the Chao Phraya River in an eery bluish glow and the highway is transformed into a streak of gold. That first night we took so many pictures – never quite capturing how tall, how vast or how alive it felt – before we succumbed to tiredness, finding Bulgari toiletries in the en-suites as we readied ourselves to fall into the enormous beds with the plumpest white pillows. Morning in Bangkok arrived with brilliant sunshine and the rousing drum beats of a street parade: step outside the hotel through a back exit and you’re free in one of Asia’s most chaotic, schizophrenic cities. The smell is of street food – spicy and citrusy – and to cross the roads you’ll dodge magenta taxis and tuk-tuks. Reassuringly, you can always see Lebua from the neighbouring streets and retreat to its incongruously glossy rooms. If you want to cool off, Lebua’s outdoor pool is on the 10th floor. As a guest of one of the suites, refreshments are also available all day in the Tower Club lounge which serves complimentary canapés, salads and petits fours. But supper at its Breeze restaurant was by far the stand-out experience for me. It’s the world’s tallest alfresco restaurant (complete with tables set into glass-walled recesses)

and a private show. Course after course of traditional Asian cuisine was bought to the table including crispy wasabi prawns and marinated duck, by a four-strong team of waiters in white robes. The accompanying China 20:20 cocktails were mixed in a chemistry set before our eyes – all billowing steam, bright colours and fresh flowers. I didn’t want to leave. In fact, the only thing that lured me away was the opportunity to go for a glass of Champagne one floor higher and see the view – Lebua’s open-air rooftop bar Sirocco is quite literally on top of the world. Afterwards, completely invigorated by the cityscape, we jumped into a tuk-tuk to join the locals haggling at the Asiatique market downtown. But all too soon it was time to move on. ANANTARA PHUKET LAYAN, PHUKET A completely different side to Thailand can be found in the lush green countryside of the western coast of Phuket. Located in the Sirinat National Park, when we visited Anantara Phuket Layan Resort & Spa our neighbours were baby elephants in an animal sanctuary on one side, and Beyoncé

and Jay-Z on the other. It sums up the resort. Glamorous and restorative, this is a place of lanterns and dark wood décor, of drinks that change colour (butterfly pea flower turns warm water purple when you add lime) and of indulgent spa treatments. I had a Thai massage here (opt for medium strength) and the stresses and strains of London life were stretched out of me. Afterwards, I lay by the outdoor spa pool for hours, checked on intermittently by the friendly staff. There are 47 villas at Anantara Phuket Layan, each with their own pool and decked outside space. As a result, the private beach and the adjacent pool are almost always deserted. Geared up as it is for promoting wellbeing, Anantara also offers the opportunity to kayak across the calm water of the bay and to undertake personal training sessions in its Muay-Thai boxing ring – almost always watched by the resort’s own family of pet ducks. While most meals, including a breakfast of crumbles and compotes, eggs and the widest selection of fruit imaginable, are served at all-day dining spot Sala Layan, it’s at the resort’s authentic southeast Asian restaurant Dee Plee that I’d recommended you visit to try regional specialities. My friend still talks about the Thai tapas topped with chilli flakes, bay leaves and chutney, and the succulent lobster served in a rich, spicy red curry sauce. From £159 per room per night, phuket-layan.anantara.com

NAKAMANDA RESORT, KRABI For many people, the vision they have in their head of Thailand will be met by a stay at Nakamanda Resort & Spa, Krabi. A member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, the intimate, friendly hotel is set on a private beach where low tide occurs twice a day, giving you a view of the sweeping sandbank out to another deserted island. When the tide is in, your photos take on that turquoise, filter-free quality and Krabi becomes the perfect base from

which to explore unspoilt and uninhabited islands. It is Hong Island that embodies the fantasy of unspoilt sugar-white beaches of Phi Phi circa 1995, before the tourists arrived in abundance – and the best way to travel is by longboat, of course. Krabi is less commercialised than much of Thailand and as a result, stays here are peaceful, simple and uninterrupted – it pays to stock up on books before you go and spend a few days

“Stays here are peaceful, simple and uninterrupted” enjoying fresh fruit purées, seafront swims and Balinese-inspired massages in the Naga Spa, with its fruit teas and custom oil blends. The 36 Sala Villas of the Nakamanda Resort are smart and low key, which will suit those looking for a more traditional experience, while two elevated private residences with sea views have dining rooms, a kitchen, a private pool and Jacuzzi, if you need more space. One of the most authentic experiences of our trip came courtesy of the Andaman Seafood Dinner that the resort hosts on Tuesdays and Fridays. Guests sit on cushions around sunken round tables in the Thai custom, and the pool area is lit entirely by candles. We grazed for three hours in total as plates of chargrilled seabass, fresh prawns and massamanspiced beef dishes made their way to the table, interspersed with cocktails to toast our holiday. It’s a short boat ride from Krabi to Phuket and as we made our way to the airport we witnessed an acrobatic fly-past from a Thai air base. A memorable end to our visit, it was one of the few surprises not arranged by our amazing hosts. SLH offers rooms at Nakamanda Resort and Spa from £126 per night for a one-bedroom villa, slh.com/hotels/nakamanda-resort-and-spa.

smart car This month, Hyundai is releasing a new flagship saloon, Genesis, in which it stylishly wrapped up every last bit of technology it had to offer. Specificationwise there’s fantastically geeky features such as the ‘smart’ opening boot, four 360-degree cameras for parking, a head-up driver’s display and the world’s first carbon dioxide cabin sensor to alert the driver in case of drowsiness, to name but a few. And, it’s brilliant to look at: inside you’ve got at a spacious, sleek cabin designed with sweeping flanks and sink-into leather seats. In our opinion, it’s the kind of car Q might drive in a Bond film. Available 2 April in limited numbers, Genesis, from £47,995, Hyundai, hyundai.co.uk

The

power and the

glory This year’s Geneva Motor Show was all about performance and horsepower, enthuses Matthew Carter

MOTORING

I

f you thought that super-charged engines were a thing of the past, that big engines and big performance were on the fast track to extinction, you can think again. Europe’s only annual motor show has just closed its doors in Geneva where the headline story was not of econoboxes or super-green electric vehicles and hybrids, but of out-and-out performance cars. And the salvo of horsepower was led by the Brits, with new performance supercars and concepts from Aston Martin, Bentley and McLaren. They were backed by mouth-watering machines from Ford, Honda, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche and Audi. Not that the eco-warriors were forgotten: two other new cars did tip their hats to a cleaner, greener

future. There was a new all-electric, all-wheel drive GT concept from Aston Martin and a petrol-electric hybrid from specialist carmaker Koenigsegg. Mind you, the latter has a V8 motor augmented by not one, not two, but no fewer than three electric motors giving a combined power output of, er, 1,782hp. The stands generating the most interest were undoubtedly those of Bentley and Aston Martin. Bentley showed the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept, a two-seat sports car promising class-leading performance and due on our roads in 2018. Prices will start at around £120,000 in today’s money. Although the wide mesh grille means it’s clearly a

Bentley from the front, the side profile owes more to Aston Martin with powerful haunches and a flicked-up tail. The concept shows a new direction for the firm with an emphasis on performance first and luxury second, rather than the other way around: although it has been turned into a formidable endurance racer, the long-serving Continental GT’s roots are clearly more comfort oriented. With more than three years before it goes on sale, technical details are sketchy though Bentley has confirmed that it will have a hybrid powertrain, using an electric motor to boost performance from the V8 petrol engine. There were three major items of news over at Aston Martin, one of them being a complete surprise. That was the DBX Concept, an all-electric GT that “…envisages a world not too far away, when luxury GT travel is not only stylish and luxurious but also more practical, more familyfriendly and more environmentally responsible,” according to new boss Andy Palmer. Bearing in mind Palmer joined the company from Nissan where he championed the LEAF EV, there’s not much he doesn’t know about electric vehicles.

Ford GT CGI

The second Aston on show was a more conventional beast, the track-only 7.0-litre V12, 800+ hp Vulcan. Just 24 examples will be built with owners being given intensive track driving tuition from experienced racers like Darren Turner before they allowed behind the wheel. Aston Martin also announced that the Lagonda Taraf, its V12-powered saloon, will be sold in Europe after all – originally it was only offered in the Middle East but “interest and demand” from other markets have forced Aston to reverse that decision. McLaren’s latest is also track focused, though the 675LT (for Longtail) remains road legal. Available only as a coupé, the 675hp LT covers the 0-62mph sprint in just 2.9 seconds thanks in part to a diet that has seen the car shed 100kg. Geneva marked the European debut of performance supercars from Ford and Honda. Ford showed the exceptional mid-engined GT. Unlike the 2005 GT, which had a brutal but effective V8 engine, the latest GT has a V6 EcoBoost until that produces more than 600hp yet is more economical and environmentally acceptable. The only bad news is that just 250 will be built a year while the price tag is likely to be close to £250,000. The Honda NSX is also mid-engined, but a rather different prospect to the Ford. It, too, has a V6 midmounted engine, but this is boosted by three electric engines, to give a total of around 550hp. Four-wheel drive is standard with sales due to start at the end of the year and Honda has confirmed that the American-built NSX will be available in right-hand drive. No prices have been announced although Honda expects the car to

offer ‘the excitement of a Ferrari 458 but at the price of a Porsche 911’ – so under £100,000. Talking of the venerable 911, Porsche showed the new 911 GT3 RS, which has almost 500bhp on tap. Weight saving measures include an aluminium body, magnesium roof and carbonfibre bonnet and engine lid. It’s not for the shy and retiring: the rear end is dominated by a huge wing at the back that looks as if it’s been stolen from an F1 car. Ferrari also got in on the act with the new 488 GTB, the company’s first turbocharged V8 of the modern era. Power comes from a 3.9-litre V8 that develops 660hp and production is due to start in September when the final 458 Italia rolls off the production line. Audi used Geneva to reveal the second generation R8, its mid-engine riposte to the Porsche 911. Although looking broadly similar to the original R8, the newcomer is lighter and more powerful than before: the 5.2-litre V10 engine now develops 601hp, to give the car a top speed of 201mph. The company also revealed plans for an all-electric e-tron version, to be sold in limited numbers in selected markets. Sister company Lamborghini, meanwhile, went a few horsepower better by unveiling a 740hp Super Veloce (SV) version of the Aventador supercar. With more power and less weight, the Aventador SV is said to have a top speed of more than 217mph. Reflecting its performance potential, the stripped-out interior has a woven carbon fiber fabric on the seats and other parts of the interior. But 740hp is a drop in the ocean when compared to the extraordinary Koenigsegg Regera hybrid. At its heart is a twin-turbocharged

Lamborghini Aventador SV

5.0-litre V8 that develops a healthy 1,085hp in its own right. But to this is added an extra 675hp from the three electric motors: one for each rear wheel and the third powering the crankshaft. Such was the power onslaught that even seasoned journalists were left reeling. “I’ve been coming to Geneva for more years than I care to remember,” said one hack, “but I’ve never known a show like this one. “The manufacturers are showing that it is possible to save fuel and reduce emissions but without emasculating performance or removing the thrill of driving.” Europe has three major motor shows. Geneva takes place every March, while the Frankfurt and Paris shows alternate every September. It’s Germany’s turn this year. Geneva is arguably the easiest to get to and the most interesting in terms of new car reveals; Paris tends to be dominated by mass-market motors from the French manufacturers while the vast Frankfurt show showcases the latest from the German carmakers. Geneva is neutral and mercifully compact – it can be done easily in a day, whereas the Frankfurt show is so vast it will ruin a pair of shoes. The Geneva International Motor Show is held at the Palexpo exhibition centre, which is literally walking distance from Geneva airport. Take an early morning flight from Heathrow or Gatwick, enjoy a full day at the show and sleep on a late flight home. Make a date in 2016.

ANDREW GROOCOCK,

A

brighter economic outlook has had a notable impact on the housing market across the country over the last year. With wages beginning to rise in real terms for the first time since 2008, consumer confidence about making large-scale financial decisions such as buying a home, is growing. Add to this the government stimulus to the market, via Funding for Lending and Help to Buy, and it is clear why there has been a strengthening of residential values. London has been leading from the front in terms of property price growth. In the years immediately following the financial crisis, the prime central London market recovered much more quickly than other markets, showing the strongest price growth of anywhere in the UK between 2009 and 2013. Price growth has taken some time to filter out past the prime central locations – but this ripple effect is now very clear. In fact, price growth in outer London is now outstripping that in prime central London. Price growth is underpinned by the fundamental imbalance between the supply and demand of homes in the capital. Not only is London’s population soaring, but its economy has grown more quickly than other UK regions. This economic activity has led to job creation, attracting more workers to London from the UK and from across the globe. Despite the overwhelming demand for homes, construction of new residential property has failed to keep pace in recent years, adding to the historical structural undersupply of new homes, creating a snowball effect on the supply problem. The pressure in the market is being further exacerbated by stickiness, with buyers holding onto London property rather than trading up or down, depleting the stocks of available property for sale. *Taken from the Knight Frank City & East Market Review – January 2015

DID YOU KNOW? A new Cushman & Wakefield Report shows that for the third consecutive year, office space in London is the most expensive in the world, at up to £1,698 per square metre per annum. Despite this, figures show that within the financial services industry, up to 48 per cent of office seats are unoccupied daily, and meeting space is used only 29 per cent of the time.

CHRISTOPHER PAXTON,

I DINNER PARTY DINING Heritage brand Wedgwood has just introduced its Tisbury contemporary collection, created in partnership with British designer Jasper Conran. The starting point for the range was the Tisbury jug, perfect for holding Spring flowers. The rest of the collection includes tableware, tea sets, serveware and bakeware, with handmade wine glasses and tumblers adding an artisan touch. The high quality porcelain pieces are resilient enough for everyday use but the clean white palette and simple fluting detail makes them equally suitable for more formal dining occasions. from £8, Wedgwood, wedgwood.co.uk

AN HONOUR FOR the ACORN group 

The Acorn Group, London’s number one multi-brand boutique estate agency, has been identified as one of London Stock Exchange’s 1,000 Companies to Inspire Britain in 2015. In order to receive this honour, a company must show consistent revenue growth over a minimum of three years, significantly outperforming their industry peers. The Acorn Group are the leading independent residential estate agency business in South East London and Kent. The Group operate three high-profile estate agency brands: Acorn, Langford Russell and John Payne, as well as Start Financial Services and MAP Surveyors, all of which have come to be known as well established and trusted brands. Robert Sargent, chief executive officer at The Acorn Group said: “Our business has a unique approach to the delivery of residential property services across both private and corporate clients. The ability to offer a ‘one stop shop’ and build long term ongoing client relationships has undoubtedly been the key to our success. However, our biggest debt of gratitude goes to our clients for their continued support, without which we would never have achieved this distinguished accolade. We look forward to working with them closely in 2015 and building upon our mutual success.” Robert Sargent acorn.ltd.uk; langfordrussell.co.uk; johnpayne.com The Acorn Group, CEO

t only seems like yesterday that we were entering the financial year and all of sudden here we are at the end of another. And what a year it has been. We have seen an amazing amount of transactions in the last quarter with stock levels at a minimum, but only down to the fact that there simply isn’t time to replenish them. Core market properties have seen the biggest movement, with one-bedroom units priced around £400 per week, entering and leaving the market within 24 hours, and two-bedroom properties priced below £500 per week within 72 hours. We have seen the prime market go in the opposite direction and slightly stall, with stock levels 30 per cent higher than this time last year. Landlords seem to be holding off making any final decisions on whether to sell, with the election looming and the slight uncertainty in the market. My main advice to landlords at present comes under the two P’s; price and presentation. If your property isn’t priced correctly and presented well, you face an uphill battle against comparable properties on the portals. You need to make sure your property is just that little bit different and stands out from the crowd. Although the rental market in 2015 looks promising, it is still important that landlords instruct the right agent who can give the right advice and secure a corporate tenant at the correct rental price quickly. We have all seen great apartments sitting idle and looking pretty on property portals with no activity as the price set was too high. Landlords must be realistic with their pricing and must look at the facts; rents for the last three months increased 1.4 per cent, not 14 per cent. Knight Frank remains the agent of choice for corporate tenants and investor landlords in the Docklands area. If we can be of any assistance in 2015 please do feel free to contact us.

A

SPRING BRINGS OPPORTUNITES ALASDAIR CARPENTER, managing director of Lourdes Estate Agents, comments on the state of the residential property market

S

s we enter the spring months and the property market begins to gather pace, we find that the number of buyers registering their interest increases dramatically. Of Franklyn James’ three branches, the Narrow Street office is still very much a traditional estate agency, with many applicants walking in to the office to register their interest to buy or let. Whilst the vast majority of buyers register via web portals, would-be Limehouse residents tend to make a personal trip to the office, keen to find out more about this historic area and what it has to offer. One of the main reasons for the applicants’ direct contact is they know that if a property is available for sales or lettings in this area it will probably not be on the market for very long. In fact, many properties are sold or let to existing Limehouse residents before the adverts even hit the internet. It is unusual, but in such a small pocket of East London we have homeowners who remain within the same area for many years. Frequently, people even upsize or downsize on the same street or within the same development. The real pull of Narrow Street, aside from the superb river and marina views offered by many apartments, is the blend of old and industrial and new and luxurious, meaning you get the best of both worlds. Plus, on a fine day relaxing river walks into the City can be enjoyed if you fancy a change from public transport.

pring is a typically buoyant period for the rental market and early indicators seem to point towards this year being no exception. Historically, the warmer months experience larger volumes of lettings transactions. This is especially prevalent in the riverside locations in and around Canary Wharf. As the economy, and in particular the financial services sector, continues to gain strength, we are observing a marked increase in the number of staff relocations to both The City and Canary Wharf: the fact that our offices are recording more enquiries from relocation companies than at any time since 2007 pays testament to this. Professional tenants in key locations around East London are plentiful. The outlook for the lettings market remains positive for the foreseeable future. Key factors like the commercial redevelopment of Wood Wharf will bring further employment to the area and thereby increase the numbers of professional workers seeking rental accommodation. The pension changes that come into force from April will allow many to access the funds to capitalise on these favourable conditions and become buy-to-let landlords. With many new residential developments due for completion later this year on the Eastern side of the Capital, I could conceivably see 2015 being one of the best years for the rental market in a decade. In short, we need more available rental stock to satisfy the demand from tenants. This will invariably result in a rise in achievable rental prices and landlords will be afforded the luxury of choosing the most suitable tenant to meet their individual requirements. Tenants may face a tougher, more competitive market and may need to agree to longer rental contracts in order to secure properties and avoid future price hikes.

Insider Knowledge

Housing policies laid bare in the lead up to election Diana Alam,

Head of Residential Development Sales, JLL

With just over a month until the UK General Election, how do the housing policies (at the time of writing) shape up in terms of their commitments to the residential property sector? YouGov’s poll indicates the Tories and Labour are both expected to win 33 per cent of the vote on 7 May 2015. The Liberal Democrats are expected to win eight per cent while UKIP is in line for 15 per cent. This means the UK is likely to see a coalition again with either the Lib Dems or UKIP becoming the king makers for either Labour or the Tories. Post-election, we can expect a few days, potentially weeks, to pass before any decision is made on which parties can work together. It will be up to Ed Miliband and David Cameron to wine and dine Nigel Farage and Nick Clegg in order to strike a deal for a new coalition government.

“The worst case scenario for the UK housing market, however, would be a hung parliament” Housing policies What is unclear is whose policies would come to the fore in the event of a coalition, whatever form it may take. However, in essence they all agree on a need to increase housing supply with the Tories, Labour and Lib Dems hanging their hats on specific numbers. The Lib Dem’s 300,000 new homes a year is the most ambitious, but does look a little unrealistic based on trend data. In the 70 years since the Second World War, that number has only been exceeded in 22 years, mostly throughout the 1960s and 1970s and not since 1977. That was also largely due to huge public sector-funded building programmes that saw local authorities at their peak delivering 245,000. Perhaps the Lib Dems are planning a return to publicly funding housebuilding, however that seems unlikely. The worst case scenario for the UK housing market, however, would be a hung parliament, with none of the parties winning an outright majority or able to agree a coalition. Under a hung parliament, we may see a lack of direction in addressing housing market issues. Many policies may be compromised as the parties squabble with each other, vetoing attempts to pass through any type of meaningful legislation.
