Abbey Road, Zebra crossing At once a monumental landmark, a put-upon traffic marking and an adored part of British pop culture, the unassuming zebra crossing outside the Abbey Road studios has Grade II Listed building status and has been the scene of numerous reconstructions and imitations over the years, much to the chagrin of long suffering locals who are usually just trying to drive down the damn road… Abbey Road itself also remains an iconic landmark with its road signs being repeatedly defaced and stolen; they’re now situated high up on a wall to prevent opportunistic memento hunters. Shame.

Cricket, Lords Cricket Ground Perhaps one of the best ways to win a North verus South London argument is to compare Lords to its South London equivalent, the Oval. Infinitely more fabulous in every way, Lords is home to the world’s oldest sporting museum, has hosted over one hundred test matches and boasts such classic cricket fixtures as the Eton v Harrow match, which has run here since 1818. Clearly, NW is where it’s at.

Green Spaces Not only do we enjoy some of the biggest and most impressive gardens in NW, but Hampstead Heath, Primrose Hill and Regent’s Park provide beautiful places to enjoy fresh air and sunshine. With a perfect mix of manicured gardens, wild open spaces, listed buildings, running tracks, playgrounds, dog walking, bathing ponds and water features, there is literally something for everyone, and still plenty of space to go around. So, grab a picnic and go green.

D De Walden Estate Marylebone simply wouldn’t be what it is without the De Walden Estate. Beautifully preserving and protecting this area’s unique character, without them the likes of La Fromagerie, The Ginger Pig and Cologne & Coton would have given way to Tesco Express, Pizza Hut and Primark. God forbid. Covering more than 90 acres, the De Walden Estate has been responsible for revitalising Marylebone High Street, while also hosting the annual Summer Fayre and Christmas Lights celebrations.

J Jewish Community Parts of North West London have a thriving and integral Jewish Community, especially in and around Golders Green and Hampstead Garden Suburb, which have an impressive range of Judaica shops, kosher bakers and butchers. The Jewish Museum in Camden on Albert Street houses an impressive collection of history about the Jewish community in Britain, the Holocaust, as well as some wonderful ceremonial art, and provides excellent resources for residents and visitors.

K Kenwood House Put Kenwood on your cultural hit-list whether art, history or gardening is your passion. The grand villa was remodelled by Robert Adam in the 18th century and is home to masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Turner and Gainsborough. Its famous Adam Library and landscaped grounds are also breath-taking. And, aside from this, the gleaming white villa and rolling green space of the Heath is one of our enduring and most favoured images of North West London.

H Hampstead & Highgate Highgate and Hampstead bookend the eastern part of NW London in the same way that Maida Vale marks the western barrier, while also boasting the Heath, Highgate Cemetery and Kenwood House among its many attractions. Great village atmosphere with a touch of the country life too. Perfect.

Belsize Park, NW3 Hampstead’s little sister / NW celeb haunt / independent village – call it what you will, Belsize Park has a certain charm. from the editor... It is my absolute pleasure to welcome you to our Anniversary Edition, a truly celebratory issue filled with everything we love about North West London. We’ve worked closely with numerous local businesses and individuals this month and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their ongoing support, we hope to continue working with them, and more of you, in the future.

No birthday is complete without presents, and we were lucky enough to get some of the loveliest gifts from many generous shops and businesses throughout the local area. See what must-have treats we received on p.18. Equally, we all to need celebrate the passing of another year with some fabulous guests, and we are lucky enough to have the impressive company of James Caan gracing our pages this month. He talks to us about innate business sense, being a dragon and plans for the future on p.8. Not to be outdone we also have eight guest editors in our July issue, all experts in their chosen field and also locals to NW. Our Fashion section is headed up Primrose Hill resident and designer Meg Mathews, who takes us through her favourite trends for this season along with some tips from Autumn/Winter 2011 collections (p.23). In Beauty, celebrated makeup artist Ruby Hammer, who lives in Hampstead, provides invaluable suggestions for summer looks (p.49), while manager director of Third Space Gym in Marylebone, Matt Julian, shares his top tips for keeping healthy this season (p.45). Our Interiors section is bursting with seasonal ideas, and vintage shop owner Gillian AndersenPrice from Judith Micheal & Daughter in

Primrose Hill takes us effortlessly through replicating the latest surrealist trends in our own homes (p.35). I’m also excited that Paul Goldstein, Hampstead resident and skiwear mogul, shared his sporting experiences with us - the idea of him hiking in his skiing gear up Heath Street to Hampstead Heath one winter is fabulous (p.59). Joe Syers, business manager at Bang & Olufsen in Hampstead, talks us through some of the recent technological trends you need to know about (p.57), while assistant editor Gaby Lane showcases the best things to see and do in the local area (p.82). In addition, luxury travel expert Tanya Rose takes us through her favourite hotels and destinations, with the kind of top tips only an expert insider can give (p.65); and Kentish Town resident and food writer Esther Walker runs through some of her most loved eateries throughout NW (p.77). Birthdays often put one in a refelective mood and we certainly had fun compiling the A-Z of North West London, taking a comprehensive tour through the area and uncovering some classic local gems. See if your favourite landmark made the list on p.12. Thank you to all our readers for your support over the last year, we look forward to bringing you much more essential lifestyle coverage in the next 12 months and beyond!

Enter the

Dragon... Before earning a reputation as the mildest-mannered, most level-headed Dragon in the BBC’s Dragon’s Den, James Caan was already recognised as one of the UK’s shrewdest and most successful business figures. Richard Brown meets the North West London resident to find out why

interview

W

ith business interests and offices around the globe, James Caan admits that he could live anywhere in the world. Despite enjoying holidays in the south of France, it is in St John’s Wood that the business magnate chooses to remain. “I don’t think there is a better place that you could be,” says the previous Dragon’s Den star. “It’s where my business is, where my friends are and where the restaurants and places I like to visit are located. I’ve pretty much travelled everywhere, but the cultures, the vibrancy, the opportunity to build businesses are what make London the most exciting place in the world.” Founder and CEO of private equity firm, Hamilton Bradshaw – in whose Mayfair offices we meet – James is able to boast the ‘rags to riches’ story that typifies many self-made millionaire narratives. While his thoughtful and articulate manner would suggest an academic background and top-tier education, in reality, this couldn’t be further from the truth. James entered the cut-throat culture of the real working world at the age of just 16. Having left school with no qualifications and after declining a position in his father’s fabric business, he held a number of jobs before starting work at a recruitment company as a trainee interviewer. The job suited him. James quickly realised that selling and interacting

with people were two things out of which he could forge a career. After employment in various agencies, James founded Alexander Mann, his own recruitment company and one that would, having started operations out of a broom cupboard of an office in Mayfair, develop into a global brand with a turnover of £130 m From recruitment, James moved into executive headhunting, an industry

Finding good opportunities for investment wasn’t easy, and Dragon’s Den was an opportunity that cost me nothing in which he co-founded Humana International. It took the company just six years to expand to 147 offices across 30 countries. In 2003, having sold Humana, James established Hamilton Bradshaw. It was shortly after that that the BBC came knocking. “I had just set up a private equity firm and all of a sudden I get approached by a TV channel saying, if you come to a studio and sit there, we will go out and find you hundreds of innovators and entrepreneurs all looking for capital. At the time, finding good opportunities for investment wasn’t easy, and here was an opportunity that cost me nothing. I would basically be doing what I

feature

already did for a living. For me, it worked fantastically. The programme enabled me to understand any business in any sector. When a guy comes in and wants £600,000 to launch a submarine, you’ve got to be able to analyse the market, the margins, the opportunity, the distribution, the manufacturing, the partners, the equity and put at an overall value on the business. That’s extremely challenging to do within 20 minutes. But by the time I stepped out of the Dragon’s Den, I could pretty much do that in any sector. Today I have thousands of people approach me in every kind of industry, and I tend to get it immediately.” James admits that the show changed his life. “Unless you have done TV before, how can you be prepared to walk into a restaurant and have everyone stare at you? Or to walk into a shopping centre and be approached by people who want your autograph? It’s not natural.” For the 2008 Asian Media & Marketing Group’s “Man of the Year”, it was an interesting change and there is nothing he regrets. “The truth of the matter is that we choose to do everything. Nobody forces you to do TV, and getting recognised is what comes with the territory. If you’re not comfortable, don’t do it.” James realises that, as his profile has grown, so too has his capacity to provide help to those who most need it. Now, as well as the work he does for The Prince’s Trust as Enterprise Fellow and Marie Curie as a senior

9

feature interview

but to anyone looking to improve the performance of their company. “When I started my business there were so many things I did wrong, purely because I had never done them before. Things like raising capital and attracting the right people, knowing about the financial margins of a business, understanding media and marketing. All of these things have taken me over 20 years to understand. Business Secrets was my opportunity to put all that experience in an app that I could share with the entrepreneurial community.” And it’s an app that entrepreneurs have been keen to take advantage of. In the four weeks preceding Business Secrets’ official launch last month, the aim was to have reached 10,000 advisor, James devotes much of his time to his own charity, The James Caan Foundation (JCF). “When you are successful, you have the opportunity to make a real difference. What I have done through the JCF is essentially applied the expertise I’ve gained to philanthropy. A lot of charitable administrations are not run as businesses, but if you apply certain business techniques and commercial parameters, you can create a much better organisation.” It is an approach that James has applied to various initiatives in his home country of Pakistan. “We started out by sponsoring a child to allow them to get a better education. Then we thought, ‘why don’t we just build our own school?’ Having done that, this year we have built an entire village where we have managed to rehouse a thousand people.” While the sense of satisfaction James gets from his charity work is obvious (“what better feeling can there be than giving someone else a better life?” he asks me), it’s also clear that this is a man whose finger rarely strays from the business world’s pulse. At the start of the year, the St John’s Wood resident read an article explaining how, over the next 12 months, nearly 33,000 UK businesses will go into receivership. It was a fact that inspired him two months later to devise his first SmartPhone app. Drawing upon his 30 years of experience, Business Secrets offers guidance not just to aspiring entrepreneurs and fledgling businesses,

10

downloads. Never having launched an app, James was sceptical. He needn’t have been. Business Secrets became the number one app in its very first week, and by the second had already achieved more than 73,000 downloads. “I think we did okay,” James smiles. James has amassed his millions through a career based in recruitment, by investing in people who are both passionate and methodical, and for whom work isn’t just a job. “You need people with a kind of fired drive,” he says. “People who can evaluate and analyse, and who have a natural knack with people.” It’s probably because James boasts all of these qualities that he’ll remain at the top of his game for many years to come. n

M Maida Vale & Little Venice Quite the hidden gem of NW, this cosmopolitan area has a distinctive European flavour, and boasts a series of wonderful restaurants, bars and cafes, all with plenty of outside seating, just perfect for people watching and whiling away a Sunday afternoon. Coupled with the benefits of canalside living, some stunning mansions and a real sense of community, this is one part of London we totally love and are quite happy to adopt as part of NW, despite its misleading W9 postcode. Bah!

N NW Postcode On the subject of postcodes, perhaps nowhere else in London exists the welldeserved exclusivity of the NW postcode. And it’s a precious commodity. If you’re house hunting, beware, walk too far left or right and you’ll find yourself stranded in N19 or N7. Quelle horreur! NW is almost a guarantee of certain things – boutique shops, organic cafes, gastro pubs, good schools, to-die-for mansions and enviable proximity to a park. Why would you risk anywhere else?

O Open Air Theatre At this time of year this outdoor auditorium really comes alive with brilliant performances from the New Shakespeare Company. The only permanent professional outdoor theatre in Britain, it has 1240 seats and features one of the longest bars in the city, running under the auditorium.

P Primrose Hill Known for its well-documented celebrity residents, the other enviable merits of Primrose Hill are often forgotten, but they should not be ignored. Boasting arguably one of the best streets for interiors in North West London as well as several impressive fashion stores, some great pubs and restaurants and the wonderful views from Primrose Hill at the end of Regent’s Park Road, it really is a very special place to live.

Q Queen Mary Gardens One of the prettiest parts of Regent’s Park, these envy inducing gardens were created in 1930s. They feature a series of small paths and lawn areas, with resplendent flower beds and some of the largest and most varied delphinium, rose and begonia collections in the UK. A number of wellplaced water features, and tree-lined avenues offer plenty of private spaces for a romantic picnic, where you can also catch a glimpse of some of the only surviving private villa residences in the park.

R Regent’s Canal The canal network throughout NW London is one of the best in the city, offering excellent walking, running and cycling opportunities from Islington through Camden to Regent’s Park, and over to Little Venice. Running since 1802, the canal affords one of the best ways to see North West London, and the regular river boat services are a lovely alternative to taxis and tubes.

S St John’s Wood The epitome of North West London glamour – who’d live anywhere else if they could? Stunning homes lines the streets here and, supported in no small way by the St John’s Wood Society, the community has resolutely resisted the commercial chain development influx that has blighted other previously lovely parts of London. Still achingly exclusive, St John’s Wood has a confident character, infused with a stylish charm. Boasting real city chic, in arm’s length of Mayfair, this is the place to see and be seen. And most definitely to live.

spotlight

T Theatres Not content with being the best place for parks, stunning houses and excellent dining options, NW also makes a good claim to fame as a cultural destination. The Hampstead Theatre shows an impressive range of new writing and has support from the likes of Mike Leigh and the RSC, while there is also great work coming from The New End Theatre, The Tricycle Theatre and The Camden People’s Theatre. And if that’s too much drama for you, The Roundhouse in Camden offers some super options from across the global music industry, with performances virtually every night of the week.

U Underground You can’t say we’re not well-connected up here. Not only is the social scene perfect for networking, but our travel connections are pretty enviable too. North West Londoners enjoy the benefits of the Bakerloo, Jubilee and Northern Lines, cutting through London and connecting us with Mayfair, Soho, West End, Victoria and South London…if for some insane reason we’d ever deign to venture down there. In addition, excellent Overground links through West Hampstead and Kilburn links the area East to West. And did you know, there are around 30 tube stations South of the river, leaving a staggering 240 or so North of the River? That’s one incredible factoid.

V

Vantage This is quite possibly the best thing about North West London, obviously. Delighting you with class, style, humour and local insight on every page, our iconic covers, exclusive Anniversary Edition interviews, unique features and unparalleled fashion and interiors coverage, along with essential guides to beauty, fitness, motoring, food and drink in your local area are all you need to get the best out of where you live.

God Forsaken Concrete Hell (whatever you choose to call it), also works well as a handy barrier, exclusively separating us from both the congestion charge and Central London, while functioning as a rather good scenic route option if you fancy sitting in your car next to Madame Tussauds for over and hour on a Friday afternoon.

X X-Factor House It’s no coincidence that the X-Factor producers decided to house their sparkling protégés in such an inspiring region of London. Proving once again the NW is home to only the finest of British talent, the X-Factor house in Golders Green has kick-started the careers of the likes of Jedward, Rebecca Ferguson, Leona Lewis, Matt Cardle and Diane Vickers.

Y Yummy Mummy Let’s face it, NW has some of the best-dressed mothers and babies in the whole world. Where else can you enjoy the sights of a £1000k buggy being pushed by a glamorous woman wearing five inch Louboutins – trust us, walking the baby in heels is the official NW definition of practical parenting. And if this wasn’t enough, NW London is filled with some of the best mother and baby shops around, so there’s NO excuse for you and your little darling to not look completely fabulous.

Z Zoo London Zoo is another classically famous part of NW London. Not least for the fact that it was in their reptile house that Harry Potter first discovered he could talk to snakes, surely the single most important event of the last 50 years? Aside from this, the zoo’s location in Regent’s Park ensures a scenic view wherever you are, and its historical and scientific credentials are really impressive. Not only is it the oldest scientific zoo in the world, open since 1828, but it also houses 755 species of animals, making it one of the largest in the UK.

hen it comes to essential shoe shopping, Jimmy Choo’s ‘Cruise 11’ is Eden for anyone wanting to be on trend this summer. The collection, fittingly named and themed for the S/S season, takes its inspiration from the sunny, sexy atmosphere of Brazil and its eclectic, bold style. The colourful side of the collection features neon yellow mesh heels, coral ‘Caitlin’ platform sandals and the glossy ‘Elaphe Snake’ day shoe in fuschia pink. Pictured above is the ‘Curve’ – a modern clog in crushed black patent (£465), perfect for

transitioning from day to night. Equally multifunctional is the black leather ‘Scarlet’ bag (£1,095), with star details; use on the beach, take to supper and dance the night away under the stars. The vibe of the S/S collection is equally sundrenched and glamour-infused, taking inspiration from the epicentre of the tropical Brazilian culture: Rio. Isabel Marant SS11 Slouchy separates, vintage sportswear and denim cut-offs feature heavily in Isabel Marant’s current line, which is inspired by the laid-back vibe of California. And whilst there are definite references to all things surf chic, girly details can be found in the addition of soft pink tones, floral prints and floaty hemlines, which are all equally wearable. At the preview, models took to the Paris catwalk in a combination of the two styles, channelling the Marant signature cool which has made the designer so widely popular. Looks were teamed with pointy boots, beaded anklets and simple belts which are ideal for the festival season!

I’m so pleased to be guest editing the July anniversary edition of Vantage. I love the magazine; it’s really well put together, always on trend and features the kinds of designers I absolutely love. My favourite designer at the moment is Isabel Marant, I’ve probably bought nearly her entire collection! My favourite piece is her faux fur knitted sheepskin jacket, it’s a kind of ‘summer fur’. And I love her striped pastel tops, they’re cute for the summer. In terms of places to shop, I mostly shop at the Liberty Style Service, and work with Lee my stylist, who runs the service. It’s great. They pull in all the designers that look great on you, and you can have a coffee or a glass of champagne and go through your look with the experts. My own collection is sold exclusively through Liberty too, so I’m always keen to support them. I’ve been channelling lots of summer colours for this season’s collection – denim, beige and peach – they’re lovely. If I’m shopping locally, I love Press for t-shirts in Primrose Hill, and in Hampstead I love Gap, and I also like Zadig & Voltaire, they’re my favourite store for leather belts, biker boots, that kind of rock stuff. I also love shopping at Dover Street Market, of course, because they

have Celine and all the Comme des Garcon smells. My favourite item for the next season is the Celine Shopper in black python. My one downfall is definitely handbags!

With the pre-AW/11 collection from Project D set to be another huge success, Gabrielle Lane talks fashion and the future with Dannii Minogue and Tabitha Somerset-Webb

W

ith this being Vantage’s anniversary issue, it is fitting that the focus of our fashion interview is a label which has just celebrated its own first year of trading. And what a phenomenal year it has been. Project D represents the combined passions of style icon Dannii Minogue and talented designer Tabitha SomersetWebb, who set out to create a range of glamorous gowns which would both appeal to, and work, for all. “We want women to wear our dresses and to feel sexy and confident in them,” explains Tabitha. “The dresses are made to look as cool on a 25-year-old as they do timeless on a 60-year-old.” To this end, the new pre-Autumn/Winter collection includes eye-catching leopard and snake prints for daytime, gorgeous ensembles of nude and grey tulle for events and several signature showstoppers such as the striking, sequinencrusted Rio mini dress. This will be the pair’s fourth range and is proving just as popular as their previous design work. “It’s a small collection but we have tried to cover party season,” says Tabitha. While she herself highlights a floaty, one-shoulder style termed ‘London’ as being perfect for cocktails, Dannii is quick to declare the dramatic ‘Monaco’ halter-neck maxi dress to be a favourite. “I have it in both red and grey, ready for action,” she quips. It is the fusion of the creators’ different preferences which likely holds the key to the brand’s wide appeal. Dannii continues to win admiration for her sophisticated style, while Tabitha channels a fresh, rock ‘n’ roll edge. “My passions are usually bolder than Dannii’s,” Tabitha agrees. “We both travel a lot, so often pick up different ideas from round the globe and email them to each other excitedly!” While dresses are clearly still on the agenda, this September will see Dannii and Tabitha share their enthusiasm for all things beauty. “We are launching a range in Boots which will cover everything from body lotion to lip glosses so we are keen to see the reaction to it,” they explain, before openly disclosing their desires to move into maternity and wedding collections in the future. Of course, the irony is that such huge brand development and success leaves little time for pampering. “In an ideal world, before a night out we both love to have a long luxurious bath, exfoliate, moisturise and give ourselves a mani/pedi while rocking out to music on our iPods,” says Tabitha. “Although, neither of us have much time!” However, their mission remains clear. “At some point we hope to have a full lifestyle brand that satisfies both our needs,” she declares. n Project D by Dannii and Tabitha is available at www.projectdonline.co.uk

STYLE GOES SURREAL

news

Ed it or

For my stint as guest editor for Interiors in Vantage I wanted to look at one of the most exciting new trends that’s reigniting the way we think about our homes. I have long been interested in the marriage of Surrealism and homeware, and now it seems the trend is catching on. The stars of the movement are of course Salvador Dali, and later Piero Fornasetti. As much ‘haute’ as it is ‘high street’, Dali’s iconic images of melting clocks and lobster telephones are instantly recognisable. In more recent times, Piero Fornasetti’s son’s shrine-like restoration of the Fornasetti family home in Milan is testament to the resurgence of interest in all things eye-tricking. The villa is a magical and truly inspirational place, not least because during the many years Piero lived there he treated the entire property as a canvas, leaving no area unadorned in his signature style. To recreate this surreal look at home, blend the classic with the quirky, and be brave!

Jaime Hayon is a master at blending art, decoration and design to interesting effect. His ‘Crystal Candy’ set of lights for Baccarat juxtapose the traditional cut crystal with the modernity of wire, ceramic and metal, forming eyecatching yet elegant centre-pieces. On a larger scale his ‘Bardot’ range of seating for Bernhardt draws inspiration from the human form. Lacking in angles, the pieces are generous in comfort while not being aesthetically overwhelming for smaller living spaces. www.hayonstudio.com

TOM DIXON Designer Tom Dixon’s scoop chair with high copper legs is the perfect combination of high design and comfort. His contemporary furniture pieces are both conceptualized and manufactured in Britain and Dixon has a real passion for injecting innovation into the industry using interesting shapes and materials. This piece would work as both a casual chair and dining seat and is also available in a lower height.

dreams

Gabrielle Lane talks style, start-ups and the city with interior designer David Carter

“A

good home is an autobiography, it shouldn’t be static,” declares designer David Carter. It is a fitting metaphor from a man who has achieved international acclaim since being named a ‘genius’ by legendary World of Interiors editor Min Hogg, two decades ago. While he continues to juggle various projects including creative stewardship for Kettner’s restaurant and consultancy for international brands, David’s home is a similarly eclectic space, regularly sought as a glamorous backdrop for fashion photo shoots and doubling as the stunning two-bedroom boutique hotel, 40 winks. “You can see a mad mix,” smiles David, surveying the décor. Famed for his theatrical style, rooms feature dark woods and gold leaf details alongside 1950s teddy bears, Victorian standing lamps and glittering chandeliers. “My work has a quirkiness to it, there’s a definite humour and sense of playfulness,” he adds. David’s first project was his former home in Islington, which he decorated in his free time whilst working in marketing. With the assistance of

interiors

an impressed friend, David quickly entered the radar of the interiors press in London and later the Parisian team of French newspaper, Le Figaro, who devoted a spread to his flat. Opportunities which allow individuals to pursue their passions are among the many things David most appreciates about life in London. “The city is a magnet, it attracts people from all over the world,” he explains. “People start with talent, ambition and dreams. They come to launch a fashion label, take a stall at Brick Lane or Portobello Market and then suddenly they’re featured in Vogue! London has lots of networks and communities which encourage it, there’s a real energy which exists here.” Unsurprisingly, David is quick to acknowledge that artistic inspiration is all around him, whether it is the vibrant pink colour of the glass I sip from as we talk, or the shape of the leaves which surround us in the garden. For someone who is always planning new schemes and ventures, I am intrigued to know how he relaxes. After all, he has even opened the doors

concierge

of his home to the travelling glitterati who seek to avoid the blandness of conventional hotel rooms. “I see it all in a holistic way,” he says. “I love doing different things. Interior design, events, the hotel, fashion shoots - it’s all bound together; it’s about me being creative. The house in particular attracts interesting people and I love meeting them.” It is no surprise therefore, that one of David’s aspirations is to open a new hotel, deep in Argentina. “40 winks here in London is the world’s smallest luxury hotel, but I’d really like to open the world’s most lavish,” he explains. “It would provide life-transforming experiences where the visitors would effectively be actors without a script; they’d have no say in what was going to happen. People have financial wealth, but are bored. I want to create grand-scale entertainments and beautiful spaces.” I suspect that long after his ambition is realised, David Carter will continue to create eye-catching and interesting concepts. “I am passionate about my work, it’s a love affair,” he concludes. n

Get the look The May Fair Hotel

The May Fair Hotel has been renowned for opulence and individuality since its opening in 1927. In keeping with its history as venue of choice for film-makers and fashionistas, the property exudes a luxurious yet welcoming feel achieved by combining plush fabrics and chic designs with a modern edge. Throughout, original pictures, statues and objects d’art create a gallery-esque space, while the hotel also incorporates the largest Baccarat chandelier in Europe. However, the May Fair style is truly epitomised by its twelve signature suites.

The Schiaparelli Suite

The Schiaparelli is a sparkling, hot pink icon. The dĂŠcor is uplifting without being overpowering and has served as the setting for numerous glossy photo shoots. Chinese antiques, a fuschia pony-skin feature wall and hand-made furniture are just some of the touches which make this room feel extravagant.

Every few years the fitness industry goes through a reinvention of sorts, with clubs and trainers battling to find the latest approach or piece of equipment that will make fitness interesting and accessible. The current focus is a ‘return to basics’, by training the body the way it was designed to move. This means, whenever possible, people are encouraged to move away from machines, and to focus on the large, multi-joint, primal movements of the body – namely squatting, lunging, bending, twisting, pushing and pulling. When performing these movements while standing or moving through space, using body weight or other tools as resistance, the body responds in a vastly superior way – by recruiting the stabilizing and postural muscles, and developing the neural pathways and movement patterns that carry over into everyday life. The benefits of training in this fashion are numerous, giving those who take part a sense of reconnecting with their bodies and achieving noticeable results for their efforts. At The Third Space in Marylebone we provide for this type of training with the development of our Retro Gym, an innovative fitness area spanning two floors with climbing ropes,

If you’re keen to extend your use of ‘retro’ training methods outside of the gym, traditional equipment like hula hoops and skipping ropes are making a comeback and provide the perfect opportunity to get fit at home. Not only are the items cheap and very accessible, they’re also great fun! Light skipping raises the heart rate, while working a hula hoop improves muscle tone.

rings, old style beams and steps. This approach seems to have flowed into current nutrition advice trends too. Fad diets have lost their appeal, and current advice is to eat as naturally as you can – mostly vegetables and fruit and organic whenever possible. Health and fitness doesn’t have to be complex or confusing – often the simplest and most natural option is the best!

Lack of time is often cited as the reason one chooses unhealthy meals, and with this in mind, My Diet-In a Box was created to provide three nutritious options a day for busy professionals. Clients are encouraged to consume additional fruit and Vegetables alongside dishes including cashew nut and coconut dahl, fish and chicken. Plans are available which focus on detoxifying the system or sports training and the company are happy to model each menu around personal preferences and allergies. In addition, care is taken to ensure lots of variation to stimulate interest in healthy eating. www.mydietinabox.co.uk

TENNIS INJURIES The onset of some sunshine and the delights of Wimbledon can see us all reaching for a racket. But do so with caution. Mr Nicholas Goddard, consultant Hand and Wrist surgeon, at The Wellington Hospital talks about keeping fit and keeping safe

It’s that time of year, when the tennis season is in full swing and aspiring players take to the courts and try to emulate the stars – which is when things start to go wrong. The unaccustomed exercise doesn’t quite work as we might have hoped and players end up with a string of various problems - particularly related to the hand and wrist. Surprisingly, professional players, including most of the top competitors, such as Andy Murray, who I have worked with, get very little in the way of upper limb injuries; this is essentially down to preparation and attention to detail. The same is not true of the ‘weekend warriors’. Most problems in the enthusiastic amateur can be traced back to ‘over-doing it’ or changes in technique. For

someone playing at the same level for sometime who suddenly becomes aware of problems arising from the wrist or elbow, try to work out what might have changed. It may simply be the racket, or string tension, in which case eliminate those possible causative factors. Sometimes the change can be more subtle and often goes unnoticed. A new coach for instance can bring in a new range of shots. Excessive top-spin on the forehand side is more likely to cause problems in the wrist, with inflammation in one of the tendons on the little finger and occasionally damage to the major wrist cartilage. Heavy slice on the backhand side is more likely to cause problems with the elbow. Most symptoms respond to standard measures of a period

Injury Prevention of rest and anti-inflammatory medication. Some problems persist; and this is when you may require professional help. I find that certain symptoms suggest certain pathologies, a term that I call “listening to the wrist”: A patient with a creaking sensation from the back of the wrist is more likely to have inflamed tendons. This is often associated with activity related pain which tends to ease a little when you play, but recurs at the end of the game and is often associated with some stiffness of the wrist. A wrist that “snaps” is generally associated with an unstable tendon and is usually the result of a fall onto the affected side. The same goes for a “clicking” wrist which is a typical sing of wrist cartilage damage. It is particularly seen when twisting the forearm as when using a screwdriver or corkscrew. Finally a wrist that “grates” is often a sign of early arthritis. Having established a diagnosis, one must take steps to try and improve the situation. Many complaints respond to rest, although anti-inflammatory drugs can help. In more severe cases physiotherapy or hand therapy may be beneficial and only occasionally are steroid (cortisone) injections used. For the more complex or resistant cases specialist advice may become necessary. Only occasionally do we get involved as surgeons, particularly with regard to the more recalcitrant conditions such as torn cartilages, unstable tendons and occasionally fractures. Modern arthroscopic (key-hole) techniques are now widely practised and facilitate a more rapid and uncomplicated recovery.

There are some simple measures to ensure that a summer’s tennis season is not cut short by injury. •

General conditioning and warming up, with a series of simple stretching exercises prior to a game, reduces the risk of muscle strains and ligament injuries

Where possible take advice from a professional with regard to your swing style and balance of power and control which best suits your style of play

Pay close attention to your racket, there is a wide range of choice and not every racket suits every player, do try out a few different rackets first

Take care to establish the correct grip size. This is the distance between the large crease in the middle of the palm and the tip of the ring finger (usually about 4½ - 4¾ inches for the average male). Too small a grip can result in excessive load on the elbow, too large a grip causes wrist problems

Look at the recommended string tension; a tighter strung racket gives more control but less power, lower tension has the opposite effect - but can cause pain around the elbow

With regard to your game, be conscious of your equipment, look closely at your shots and technique. Such simple measures will mean that most potential problems can be prevented and you will hopefully avoid the surgeon’s knife.

Start by dry brushing the body every day, exfoliating twice a week and then moisturising, to leave skin looking and feeling gorgeously smooth. If appropriate, choose a great anti-cellulite cream like Shiseido Advanced Body Creator Aromatic Sculpting Gel for any problem areas to get into great shape for bikini weather. If desired, apply gradual tan; Sienna X is a great spray tanning brand and have a range of products for home use.

I’m regularly asked for my beauty tips so it’s great to be able to guest edit this section of Vantage magazine and share my beauty advice. This time of year is all about re-evaluation. With the seasonal change, comes the perfect opportunity to analyse our current beauty regimes and adapt them to suit body and facial needs during this time. Summer is exciting, the sun is shining, we put away our winter wardrobe, move into lighter clothing and sandals, and as such, it’s a fun opportunity to experiment with the latest trends. Preparation is also key as we reveal so much more of our skin during this season. Whether you seek professional help, such as using an expert for microdermabrasion, or simply introduce some new products and routines into your home, it’s a great time to pamper and enjoy. Have a great summer!

Face masks are a great way to de-clog and rehydrate tired skin and both Sisley and Eve Lom have some fabulous masks. For everyday use, choose a great moisturiser, preferably containing SPF.

Feet Ensure your feet look gorgeous by using some of the latest nail colours, Revlon and Topshop have an amazing selection and toes is where you can really experiment with colour.

Essentially the idea is to go lighter and be less heavy handed with makeup during summer and you need to pick and adapt your makeup to suit yourself as well as current trends. If you can, buy some new brushes/tools to apply your makeup as this is always a great way to ensure flawless application. Evaluate which type of bronzing product is best for you and your skin type/ tone. Personally, already having dark skin, I choose to use a bronzer for colour – Guerlain is the Rolls Royce of bronzers. However, for someone with fairer skin, maybe it’s simply a tinted moisturiser that provides some added colour. Vibrant lips are going to be big this season, however, this trend is not great for everyone; those with thinner lips should take this trend to their nails instead of lips. If you have fabulous eyes, choose a vibrant colour to highlight these or if you want a smoky eye for the evening, try using bronze and select a simple waterproof mascara. Sometimes simplicity is all you need!

A True Sanctuary There are few places as well-equipped as this luxe Covent Garden retreat says Gabrielle Lane

T

he Sanctuary as a brand has long been synonymous with pampering and even has its own dedicated product range, leading many to seek out its flagship spa in the heart of London.

Approach Designed by women for women, The Sanctuary aims to provide choice, expertise and time to relax and unwind. For this reason, there is even a dedicated Sleep Retreat which uses low frequency sound wave technology to soothe those requiring pure rest.

Surroundings The Covent Garden Spa is the jewel in the crown of Sanctuary retreats, offering sophisticated facilities and serene design. The Koi Carp lounge is a laid-back yet luxe, candle-lit area, set around water and dotted with day-beds, plants and pillars. Light lunches are available here, although the spa also has a fashionable á la carte restaurant offering everything from champagne and light bites to afternoon tea. All guests are invited to enjoy personal infra-red sauna environments equipped with padded loungers and

piped music before their treatment, while wet spa facilities include Jacuzzis and both relaxation and exercise oriented swimming pools

Treatments Consider this a dream destination for both inside and out. Treatments such as the Hammam Rasul and La Sultane Skin Softening Signature are hugely successful and internationally-inspired body rituals for relexation. Expect black olive soaps of Marrakech and fine sea salts from Jordan on the list of fabulous ingredients which cleanse, tone and condition the skin. Massage-based therapies encompass the stress-busting application of shea butter and essential oils, healing arts of reflexology and tummy-tightening techniques, depending on the client’s specific needs. If you’re considering more invasive rejuvenation, the skin clinic of the Sanctuary specialise in medical chemical peels, genuine Dermaroller therapy and Botox injections, so perhaps book a consultation with a therapist whilst visiting, for expert advice. n 12 Floral Street, WC2E 9DH www.thesanctuary.co.uk

Spa Spotlight ... Lava Shell Massage I had imagined The Sanctuary to be serene, smart and – dare I say it – a tad pretentious. However, what struck me most as I entered the spa was how vibrant and inclusive it is. Clients enter via a staircase in The Sanctuary’s Covent Garden beauty emporium, which sets the tone perfectly. This is a place where regulars pop in for a manicure en route to Mulberry, and mums and daughters gossip over coffee after a lovely afternoon together. Yet, relaxation is assured, especially when one has opted for the Lava Shell Massage. In this treatment, tiger clam shells from the Philippines which have been heated and smoothed are used as tools to relieve tired muscles. The process is simple, soothing and highly enjoyable. The movement of the shells combined with aromatherapy oil and added warmth are sure to send you drifting off and ensure it is perfect for those who desire a gentle, peaceful end to a stressful day.

REVOLUTION or On paper, an upmarket compact petrol/electric hybrid makes a great deal of sense in these environmentally aware times, says Matthew Carter. In practice, something’s missing

motoring

calibre

W

hy do you suppose Lexus chose Kylie to front the launch of the CT 220h? Is it because she’s small but perfectly formed, and this is the smallest Lexus yet? Compact though it might be, the Lexus looks a little bland, and that’s a criticism that can’t be levelled at Ms Minogue. Since the adverts talk about the Quiet Revolution, it’s clearly extolling the sound of silence. But that doesn’t work either; although Lexus is undoubtedly one of the quietest cars this side of a RollsRoyce, Kylie in full flow is anything but. Frankly, I am as confused about the car as I am about the ad campaign. The CT 200h is the first compact hybrid from Lexus and is either a brilliant solution to modern mobility needs, or a flawed compromise of a car. Underneath the rather ordinary five-door hatchback body – take away the Lexus badge and it could be anything from Japan or Korea – lies the drivetrain of the Toyota Prius. That means a 1.8-litre petrol engine producing a limp 98bhp, which is boosted by a small electric motor, taking the combined power output up to a more respectable 134 bhp. The car can run for short distances on the electric motor alone (up to about a mile and below 25mph), but spends most of its time augmenting the petrol engine. The result is modest performance (more than 10 seconds to 60mph and a top speed of only 112 mph) but exceptionally low emissions (CO2 of 94g/km) and strong economy (68.9mpg on the combined cycle). It’s the perfect city car: compact enough to park easily and its emissions figure means it’s exempt from London’s congestion charge. And it really is exceptionally quiet around town. You set off in silence on battery power alone, but even when the petrol engine kicks in, the hush in the cockpit is uncanny. Out on the open road, though, you start to question the entire hybrid concept. The petrol engine is far from efficient in terms of performance, and it has to drag around the extra weight of the electric motor and its batteries while it recharges. Once charged, the electric motor does indeed aid the performance – though in Sport mode, the battery drains in double quick time and you’re back to driving a heavy, underpowered hatchback. The problem is that there are many ‘ordinary’ diesel-engine cars out there that perform better than the Lexus against the clock, and get damn close to matching its environmental credentials. So this means the Lexus needs to be great to drive if it’s to compete with cars like the BMW 320d or VW Golf BlueMotion. It starts well enough. The cabin is a great place to be and has a real premium feel. Here there are many clever touches like the multi-function controller, that operates much like a computer mouse, for intuitive control of the car’s features – satnav, the sound system and the sophisticated air conditioning system, for example. It’s reasonably roomy, though the battery pack does eat into boot space. Pricewise, the mid-spec £25,000 SE-L gets you leather, although satnav is extra, but with its low benefit-in-kind penalties, zero Vehicle Excise duty and generally low running costs, this would make an excellent company car. It handles well, too. In aiming the car at a more youthful audience than the typical Lexus owner, the bespoke chassis has been tuned to provide tidy cornering with little or no

body roll and near neutral responses. But there’s a cost: the car’s ride. By targeting BMW and Audi drivers, Lexus engineers clearly thought it would be OK to match the sporty handling with a sporty ride. Trouble is, they’ve missed their target by a country mile. There’s a world of difference between the firm but well-damped and controlled ride of a 3-series and the thin, restless, unsettled ride of the Lexus. It’s a matter of fine-tuning and my guess is that the Mark 2 version will IN BRIEF be far better. It’s a shame. Around town it’s as near Car: perfect as a car can be; the low speed Lexus CT 200h SE-L ride actually isn’t so bad. But take it Price: out of town, and all those compromises £25,200 start to grate: it’s not quick or even Engine: that economical when compared with Series/parallel hybrid; a top diesel; the official figure might be 1798cc four-cylinder petrol 68mpg, but mid-50s will be the best plus electric motor most drivers will see. And on some road Power: surfaces, it’s downright uncomfortable. 134 hp combined So, revolution or compromise? For Drive: me, it’s the latter. Thinking about it, Front-wheel drive maybe that’s why they chose Kylie Performance: to front the campaign. She, too, is a 0–62mph in 10.3 seconds; compromise – best enjoyed with the 112 mph max sound turned down. n

technology “One of the best things about working with technology is that something new is always around the corner, but trying to understand whether the latest big thing will even exist in a year or two can be daunting. One big development at the moment is cloud computing, which simply put means that your computer, phone and tablet all share your music, pictures and other files which are stored on a “cloud” memory, like an enormous hard-drive in the sky. While companies like Apple and Google have already launched their cloud services to much fanfare, the jury is still out on the long term success of this technology, public awareness is limited and safety is a serious concern. Also increasingly appearing on the market is 3D television, something that seems to create a Marmite response from consumers. If you want this technology at home you really need a large television or projection screen (think 55 inches and above), a darkened room, enough pairs of 3D glasses and something that lends itself to 3D (like Despicable Me on Blu-ray) to make it really worth it.” Joe Syers, business manager, Bang & Olufsen, Hampstead

A GOOD SPORT I have two sporting passions - football and skiing. The football season is nine months long and dominates my life. So, like the players, I am now on my summer break before the new season starts again mid-August. As a North London boy I can choose from two teams, and have always been a member of the Tottenham tribe. I don’t understand Man United fans who are from Hampstead...but we are a liberal society and have to tolerate all sorts! Beating Arsenal away this last season was a high point. Following that, I must confess I had to maintain communication silence with my Arsenal friends for about a week afterwards. I also love skiing and all winter sports. One of my first memories was tobogganing in the winter of ‘62 on the Heath at Branch Hill and skating on Whitestone Pond. Once I even skied on Hampstead Heath and Primrose Hill. Walking up Heath Street in all my gear was so strange! I don’t like gyms. All those fit and super energetic people and all those sweaty bodies are just not for me. Instead, I have a trainer three times a week when I’m in London. We have suffered each other for 15 years. I used to go for a run on the Heath with him and we¹d get lost so many times. Miraculously

One year and counting With the 2012 Olympic Games just a year away, Lee Brooks takes a look at how we’re shaping up to host the world’s greatest sporting spectacle

I

t’s 6 July 2005 and London has just won the contest to host the 2012 Olympic Games, beating Paris by 54 votes to 50 at the IOC meeting in Singapore. Cue scenes of jubilation across the country with project leader and former Olympic champion Sebastian Coe given the envious task of preparing Great Britain

to host the greatest show on earth in just seven years’ time. London is no stranger to hosting the games though; the Capital staged the event at short notice in 1908 when Rome pulled out following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906. Then in 1948, London hosted what became known as the Austerity Games following World

War II. But with Beijing pulling out all the stops to deliver a spectacular show, the pressure was on Coe and his team to deliver something special. Fast forward to today, with one year left on the clock, and the organisers are clearly doing something right. Weymouth, home to the sailing event, was the first purpose-built venue to

sports

be completed in November 2008, a staggering three and a half years before the Games. The Velodrome, which will see the likes of Bradley Wiggins and Chris Hoy look to replicate their enormous success in Beijing, was the first purpose-built venue in the Olympic Park to be completed in February this year, giving our cyclists plenty of time to adjust to the unique cambers and atmosphere of the venue ahead of the Games. The Lee Valley White Water Centre, home to the Olympic canoe slalom events, opened its doors to the public in April this year, giving people the chance to test out the same waves our Olympians will be tackling next summer. Unsurprisingly, there was unprecedented demand for tickets when they went on sale in March this year with 1.8million people applying through a ballot system. The organisers received some 20million tickets requests with only 6.6million tickets available, meaning hundreds of thousands of fans missed out. A staggering one million people alone applied for tickets to the much anticipated 100m final with only 20,000 seats available in the stadium. But if you missed out on a ticket, all is not lost. There will be further rounds of sales to offload the remaining tickets, and these will be sold on a first-comefirst served basis. But if you had your heart set on seeing Tom Daley going for gold in the Aquatics Centre or watching Victoria Pendleton peddle to a win in the Velodrome, there’s a chance you still can. Every venue will hold an official test competition over the course of the next 12 months to ensure all runs smoothly in 2012. The world’s best

athletes are expected to compete as they seek to adjust to the venue ahead of the big event, and you can buy tickets to see them all in action. After Britain’s record breaking performance of 47 medals in Beijing saw them finish fourth in the medal table, their highest finish since the 1912 Games in Stockholm, the British Olympic Association have upped the ante and targeted a third place finish. With the USA, China and Russia, who were the only nations to finish ahead of Britain in China, sure to be a force once more, and major countries such as Germany, Australia and France desperate to beat GB on home soil, that target is certainly ambitious. But then you just have to look at our strong squad, across a range of sports, to see why. The men’s cycling pursuit team have continued their Beijing domination in the last three years and currently top the world rankings while heptathlete Jessica Ennis has been in a different class to her rivals since winning world gold in 2009. Swimmer Rebecca Adlington is coming into form at just right the time as she bids to defend her two gold medals and diver Tom Daley came of age when he won double gold at the Commonwealth Games last October with a new much tougher routine. And that’s just a fraction of the gold medal prospects which Britain boasts going to 2012. If the athletes can withstand the pressure of a home nation and deliver on their talent, and the organisers continue to deliver breath-taking venues on schedule, London could mark the beginning of a new era for British sport and confirm the country’s place in the premier league of Olympic nations. n

GOING FOR GOLD After narrowly missing out on a medal in Beijing, Britain’s most successful gymnast Beth Tweddle is gunning for the podium in 2012… When Beth Tweddle reached the final of the uneven bars at the 2008 Beijing Games, she became the first British gymnast to do so. That she achieved the feat having recently overcome a troublesome rib injury makes it all the more impressive. Tweddle went on to finish fourth, just outside the medals, and though she showed the world that she could compete with the best, her disappointment was clear. “It was tough to take,” said Tweddle. “Had it been a different day, the results may have gone a different way but that’s just the way it goes. I still think I have every chance of challenging for a medal in London.” If her results since Beijing are anything to go by, it’s hard to disagree. Victory in the uneven bars at this year’s European Championships, her third successive gold at the event, adds to her three World Championship golds and firmly puts her in the frame to deliver on British gymnastics target of one to three medals in London. As a result of her success, Tweddle carries the hopes of a nation but she appears unfazed by the pressure. “The pressure is always there wherever you’re competing,” she said. “And I have no doubt it will ramp up in London in front of the home fans. But when it comes to competing, you just have to put it to one side. It is getting a lot easier now because it’s not just myself that is capable of winning medals but a whole a crop of us on both the girls and the boys side. “We’ve also had the experience of competing at a European and World Championships on home soil. It can be quite a shock when you suddenly have 15,000 people shouting your name out, especially when we can go to major championships and have just a handful of people in the stands. You can’t buy that kind of experience.” At 26, London is likely to be Tweddle’s last shot at an Olympic medal. However, she’s not putting herself under any pressure to win gold. “I’m not fussy on a colour,” she said. “Any Olympic medal would do. But I’ve got a lot to look back on over my career and am very proud of what I achieved so if it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen. I just want to give it my best shot.”

L Charbonnel et Walker’s beautiful summer chocolate collection evokes all the charm of a bygone era

uxury chocolatier Charbonnel et Walker have unveiled a speciallypackaged range, which testifies to the brand’s glorious history. Since 1847 when Edward VI encouraged Madame Charbonnel to leave her Parisian base and bring her work to London, the house has become renowned for its fine products. The Vintage Collection consists of three boxes of handmade milk and dark confectionary, each adorned with a delicate design from 1959. A 125g round box and 500g oval box are both finished with golden rope

handles, while a 290g selection features an elaborate satin bow. However, it is the classical cream floral print which makes these boxes so attractive and ensures they can be displayed long after their contents have been enjoyed. The original collections were popular amongst London’s glamorous theatre-goers who pre-ordered them ahead of performances in the West End and they are set to prove just as appealing this summer. n The Vintage Collection, from £15 Charbonnel et Walker, www.charbonnel.co.uk

TRAVEL SECRETS Working in luxury travel for 25 years and being the CEO of a company that manages PR for some of the world’s most amazing hotels, is truly the most astonishing job. And from this vantage point I am thrilled to be guest editor of this month’s travel section. My celebrity clients ask me all the time what destinations I would recommend, and whether there is a hotel I secretly adore. This month I’m sharing my secrets exclusively with you. For me travel is all about discovery of the special and authentic secrets that make a destination come alive. Travel pioneers with a sense of adventure forged the way before mass tourism took hold, and are happy to accept the local approach to service. Newly opened hotels should be approached with caution, even with a reputable brand; like a good wine they need time to mature. Places that get my travel juices flowing right now are a cocktail of Uruguay and Argentina expertly mixed by my black book boys from Brazil, Dehouche. Expert advice connects you with the joys of a superb designer guest house or hotel, pop-up gourmet restaurant by a waterfall, and the heady scent of luxurious Argentinean leather goods. Suite Dreams in

Florence

Kate Harrison enjoys a romantic weekend in Florence at a restored, aesthetic marvel of a hotel where it’s all part of the process to come, see and stay in bed

E

veryone would like to stay in a royal suite, wouldn’t they? I harbour envious curiosity about what lurked behind the silk curtains of Kate Middleton’s set-up at The Goring. To be frank, a simple suite is quite an upgrade from the standard four walls of a hotel room in my world. The big screen has romanticised and characterised the hotel suite; scenes of frolicking around in Pretty Woman and Carrie’s exuberant stay in Paris with the Russian in Sex and the City come to mind. At the Four Seasons Hotel in Florence, a suite is – happily – what you are likely to end up with, as almost a third of the accommodation is arranged as such. What’s more, magnificent frescoes and friezes will adorn your walls and ceilings, lending you a feeling of residing in a cosy art gallery rather than a bedroom; a special type of gallery where you can kick off your heels, raise your voice and wear out the furniture, all the while imagining life as a Florentine noble (as best you possibly can).

I came to Florence for a romantic weekend break with my husband as so many do. I like to think ours was one to savour a little more than the average though, as it was on the cusp of our transition to first time parenthood. Samuel Johnson is quoted as saying that someone “who has not been in Italy is always conscious of an inferiority, from his not having seen what it is expected a man should see.” Today, there’s a palpable sense of duty for the welltravelled UK holidaygoer who wants to keep conversation flowing to have ‘done Tuscany’. As the regional capital of Tuscany and one of the most stunning cities in Italy, and arguably the world, Florence is both the Tuscan virgin and the romantic couple’s best bet. Founded by Julius Caesar himself, it is also of course the wine lifeblood of Italy, if not Europe. Guests at Four Seasons Florence (‘Firenze’ in Italian) can stay in either the 15th century Palazzo della Gherardesca or the Coventino, a 16th century former convent. Importantly for most these days, Renaissance artistry cohabits with

travel

high-tech comfort. Each suite is unique but all are decorated in wonderfully bright Tuscan hues and come with sensational garden views. One step further in the direction of contact with nature would be the hotel’s exclusive garden suite, La Villa, and the garden suite to outdo all others is the Della Gherardesca Royal Suite, where a long vaulted reception gallery contains five broad windows overlooking its own botanical park, the Giardino della Gherardesca. There is something incredibly special about staying in a hotel that has reinvigorated an old property. The Four Seasons Florence is the result of one such restoration project. Knowing someone used to live in your hotel injects the place with a home-away-from-home quality. Never mind that previous residents might have had rather a different concept of the word ‘home’ to you and me (Four Seasons Florence was formerly the home of a Pope and five centuries of Florentine nobility). Stepping inside these folks’ home of yore gives visitors the chance to view artworks ranging from the 15th to the 19th century in their original context and in the knowledge that a meticulous process went into unearthing them (in this case seven years). Family emblems and shields only add to the sensation of human warmth. 18th century novelist Fanny Burney wrote that “travelling is the ruin of all happiness! There’s no looking at a building

connoisseur

Someone “who has not been in Italy is always conscious of an inferiority, from his not having seen what it is expected a man should see”

after seeing Italy.” The Four Seasons Florence should definitely be approached with such a warning. The hotel meets all expectations in terms of life beyond the Suite, should you choose to explore it. There’s the two-storey spa with high quality herbal treatments used by 13th century monks. Italian dining can be experienced at Il Palagio restaurant where 50 excellent wines are on offer, and that’s just including those by the glass. You’ll not be wanting for your outdoor pool, gym or hair salon either. What is now the hotel’s backyard was built in the 1470’s for Bartolommeo Scala. Known as the Giardino della Gherardesca, it is, incidentally, Florence’s largest private garden. Back in the day it was a truly secret garden of unexpected botanical delights used for collections, including those of azaleas, and it even housed a ragnaia (a grove designed to catch small birds). The present garden, made in the 18th century, is a path-riddled haven of shrubs, trees, an Ionic temple and a tepidarium (the warm area of a Roman bath). Go beyond these 11 all-encompassing acres and you’re surrounded by spectacular, varied countryside, thanks to Florence’s position in the basin of the Arno River. Beyond what we might be accustomed to expect in a hotel, this one has its own chapel where the noble family used to pray; a small window in the ceiling of the chapel allowed family members to peer in at services from the floor above, should they not have the inclination to attend. But the greatest achievement of Four Seasons Florence is that amid the stuccoes, bas reliefs and silks, there is not an iota of pretentiousness to be found. This is in harmony with the laid-back charm of Florence itself, credited to the social consciousness underpinning Renaissance humanist ideals. These philosophers believed fervently in the worth of the individual and would no doubt have understood the pleasure of having not just a room but a rich architectural suite of one’s own. n For more information please visit www.fourseasons.com/florence

Culinary delight

Fulfilling a lifelong passion, Tessa Mills takes the Blanc Vite cookery course at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons and discovers that sometimes dreams really do come true

escape

D

oing a cookery course at Le Manoir has been a dream of mine for over 20 years. Having been lucky enough to eat in the excellent restaurant at the hotel a couple of times, the chance to see behind the scenes and learn some tips from the experts who work with Raymond Blanc on a daily basis seemed like a wonderful opportunity. Le Manoir runs a series of courses throughout the year including beginners bread-making, fish & shellfish, chocolate and vegetarian focus days, four day residential courses and a series of options for children. I was doing the Blanc Vite, their most popular course, which covers (as his seminal book Blanc Vite did) the basics of professional cooking, aiming to indulge those with a passion for food who would like to benefit from some industry expertise. In short, the course simply and efficiently teaches you how to cook French with good ingredients at home.

Friendly approach The day starts off with coffee and biscuits in the reception area, and we meet the rest of the people taking the course – only nine others, so we’re a close knit group – before going through to our cooking space. The Cookery School is housed inside the actual hotel

kitchen, with large windows, making us feel connected to the larger goings on at the hotel, but at the same encasing us in our own culinary bubble. Warm woods, spacious benches and soft lighting remind us all of our own kitchens, which is exactly the point, explains Mark Peregrine who runs the courses. “We didn’t want to create an environment that felt industrial. We want people to learn the kind of tips and techniques here that they can then use in their own kitchens, hence the homely approach.” It really works, I feel instantly relaxed, faced with the same utensils and tools we would have at home, knowing that I could replicate what I’m learning here in my own kitchen without having to invest in lots of complex machinery. Aprons and chefs coats (which we get to keep) are handed out, and we’re assigned a partner to work with. All along the way Mark informs us about what is happening, injecting instructions with humour and helpful anecdotes. Mark has worked with Raymond Blanc in various guises for over 30 years, and is warm, generous with his expertise and a great teacher.

Best ingredients In the same way that we only use the more standard kitchen tools and accessories, ingredients are simple and readily available items such as chicken,

connoisseur

tomatoes, artichokes, scallops, beans, steak and eggs; what sets them apart is the quality. Mark is quick to explain that investing the extra expense in good quality produce can be the difference between an ordinary dish and an extraordinary meal. Mark then unveils the menu we will be cooking, and I don’t think i’m alone in not believing we can cook all this in one day. First up is poached eggs with tomato fondue, followed by two soups – gazpacho and French bean soup. Then we make two salads – poached artichokes with mustard dressing vinaigrette, and a salad of grilled squid with provencale vegetables. The main dishes are comprised of fillet of sole with bouquetiere de legume, steak maman blanc (Blanc’s mother’s own recipe) and roast chicken. Desserts are classically French - clefoutis, lemongrass and lime leaf crème pots, and shortbread with summer fruits and Chantilly cream. The menus change from course to course, depending on the seasonality of the produce and the time of year, but the range of dishes is designed to ensure that classic French cooking is made approachable, as well as passing on some tips and advice.

Tools and tips And so we start cooking. Throughout the course Mark maintains a really good balance between practical work

69

connoisseur escape

and demonstration, and the whole day is planned seamlessly, ensuring each dish is ready for us at the right time. We watch Mark cook the dish first, and then taste it, ensuring we know what it should look and taste like. Then we cook our own and finally sit down to eat it, and this food provides our meals throughout the day. So we start off, logically, cooking our breakfast, learning the perfect way to cook poached eggs, and serving them with a rich, sweet tomato fondue. After this we marinade some of the fish and meat ready for it to be cooked later on, learn to make top quality pastry ready for our desserts and get an invaluable lesson on how to whip up the perfect French vinaigrette. Following this we cook artichokes, learning to use lemon on the base to stop the flesh browning, before moving on to make the French version of pesto, known as ‘pistou’, which has garlic, basil and lemon but no pine nuts or parmesan in it. Next up is a whole squid, each of us tasked with preparing our own squid, grilling it and making the leafy green salad accompaniment.

The whole picture After making an amazing selection of soups and salads, it’s time for lunch, which has been specially laid out for

70

us while we were cooking, and we sit down to eat the fruits of our morning’s labours accompanied by a glass of wine, the merits of which are explained to us by the kind sommelier who pops in to say hello. Mark is helpful throughout, answering our numerous questions and explaining the theory behind some of his tips and techniques. After lunch we cook the main dishes. Roast chicken is a revelation, simply coated in butter and put in the oven, while beef fillet is cooked slowly over a low heat, creating a succulent, rich steak, cooked to perfection. At this point it’s clear some of our group is starting to feel the effects of a full day’s cooking, and, at exactly the right time, Mark suggests a tour of Le Manoir’s famous vegetable and herb gardens, from which they get 20 per cent of their produce during the summer. A potter in the fresh air, exploring the incredible range of pungent herbs and exotic vegetables across the acre and half plot is a wonderful treat and provides a useful perspective when we consider what we’ve already been lucky enough to cook with. Finally we head back to our room for coffee and the cooking of desserts, rolling out a simple clefoutis, as well as some wonderful shortbread, along with an inspired lime and lemongrass pudding. Desserts are refrigerated

in individual boxes for those of us staying on at Le Manoir that evening, ready to collect the next morning. And then the course is over, finished neatly with afternoon tea, certificate giving and handing out of some rather amazing goodie bags.

Treat yourself I was lucky enough to be staying that night at Le Manoir, and highly recommend this as a perfect ending to the course. I stayed in one of their exemplary suites, dotted around a leafy courtyard with its own private terrace and acres of space. Dinner that night was served in the lovely restaurant, and we found the special tasting menu to be a perfect reflection of everything I’d learnt that day, as well as a superlative example of the quality of food at Le Manoir. The Blanc Vite course, and all the courses here, are without doubt exemplary; tuition was informative, friendly and infused with the kind of expertise that only a professional could impart. With a place so steeped in food history and universally recognised for its excellent culinary credentials, what better way to improve your cooking and learn from the best? n Courses start from £335 www.lemanoir.com

Nosh in nw Being guest editor of Food and Drink for Vantage is the kind of challenge I’m up for. While North West London might not have its share of Le Gavroche or the newest funkiest openings (for greedy-guts and mindless fashion-slaves anyway), restaurants with an NW postcode have the singular appeal of being very near my house. Top of my list for dinner out is Jin Kichi, the tiny Japanese Grill in Hampstead. Tiny, sweaty, boxy and almost unheard-of, it’s tucked away at the top end of Heath Street and you could easily miss it. Inside you jostle with other in-the-knows for a space at the bar to down sake after sake and eat skewers of tender, tasty morsels from quail’s eggs to chicken gizzards (delicious) which are cooked up in front of you. If I want to make my husband (restaurant critic Giles Coren) really happy, I suggest the Bull and Last, which is a gastropub of unparalleled tastiness on Highgate Road. Staffed by charming ex-Wolseley types and with a cunning, clever chef, there’s always something new and exciting on the menu. The beetroot fritter salad almost always makes my husband try to propose to me again...! Retsina in Belsize Park is another gem. Hosted by the irrepressible Stavros (yes, really),

Get to know your grower

Three of a Kind... Rooms with a view

Hew Blair, chairman and buying director of wine merchants Justerini & Brooks, offers his advice on wines that are great to drink right now

LOCAL Paramount

W

hile many people will look for a grape variety, region or style of wine they know well, it is imperative to consider the reputation of the grower. Building a cellar with the very finest and scarcest cru wines from the worlds icon winemakers is a dream for many and a reality for the very few. While the top wines can, if you can find them, cost hundreds or thousands of pounds a case, most growers will produce entry level wines. These may be less known cru or from younger vines or less regarded grape varietals, which offer amongst the very best value for the canny wine drinker. They are typically earlier drinking, meaning you can pull the cork with confidence as soon as they are delivered and reduce the need to cellar, though many will benefit from a little extra time in the bottle.

Current favourites for drinking now: Petit Chablis, Dauvissat Camus, 2008 (£16.17 per bottle) Vincent Dauvissat make the most sought after Chablis from the finest vineyards including Grand Cru of Les Clos and Les Preuses, and this Petit Chablis expresses great complexity and character than many Grand Cru wines from lesser growers. St Joseph, Offerus, Jean-Louis Chave Selection, 2007 (£19.67 per bottle) From the great Rhone producer and king of Hermitage, Jean-Louis Chave, these ‘Selection’ bottlings offer the sheer class and richness of ready to drink Syrah at its best. Bourgogne, Jean Grivot, 2008 (£15.67 per bottle or £35.34 per magnum) From the renowned Cote de Nuits Burgundy village of Vosne Romanée, Etienne Grivot makes exquisite Grand Crus Echézeaux and Clos de Vougeot. This straight Bourgogne Pinot Noir is drinking beautifully.

Perched atop infamous London landmark, Centrepoint, just off Tottenham Court Rd, Paramount is one of our favourite places for brunch. Decor from acclaimed designer Tom Dixon is bold and enticing, while the food is sumptuous and well-priced.

Dolcetto d’Alba, Elio Altare, 2008 (£13.17 per bottle) Elio Altare is one of the pioneers of Modern Piedmont winemaking, and this underestimated Dolcetto grape, immensely popular in its native Piedmont, can produce stunningly elegant wines of poise and freshness. Rioja, Reserva, Sierra Cantabria, 2005 (£16.17 per bottle) The Eguren family produce the very best modern Rioja available and their Amancio, San Vicente, El Puntido and La Nieta are highly prized. Every wine from their estate receives the same quality approach in the vineyard and winery. Views over the city include the Gerkin in close proximity, as well as several of the newer City developments, and the space is best enjoyed at night when a fun, sociable atmosphere lights up the restaurant. Wine highlights include an impressive array of Champagne, and some excellent reds from Provence.

Taste and Texture Serving exemplary food, in striking surrounds, Michelin-starred Texture in Marylebone is the pride of NW, says Emma Mills

A

s Esther Walker rightfully points out in her guest editor column this month, NW London might not be blessed with some of the culinary stalwarts that Mayfair and Soho enjoy. But, then, as she also says, anything located in our much adored stamping ground is by proxy a million times more fabulous. Luckily, Texture doesn’t even need to use its Marylebone postcode as a selling point. It has plenty of those already. Décor wise it’s right up there with the chicest and sharpest restaurants around. Wooden floors, high ceilings, dynamic and explosive wall art and generous flower displays rising up to meet decadent hanging light fittings set the tone, while the large tables highlight the room’s luxury of space, nodding to the merits of Scandinavian minimalist chic with the simple place settings and cool service. In the kitchen Agnar Sverrisson, one of London’s most celebrated chefs, serves up unique, inventive and diverse food from a menu that moves effortlessly through a range of

global culinary influences. Sourcing as much as he can from his native Iceland, where he reckons fish, meat and vegetables are freshest and tastiest, dishes include scallops, squab pigeon, asparagus, parmesan, Icelandic cod (obviously) and Gressingham duck. So far, so tasty. But what Sverrisson does here that makes Texture so unique, and attests to its name, is to treat these ingredients with a playful love, celebrating the crunch, snap, fizz, melt, pop and slurp that food cooked a multitude of ways can give you. Snow, foam, veloute, twigs and mousse crop up in several of our dishes, always adding something extra to the meat or fish they’re joined by. The tasting menu offers good value for money, but personally (and a little strangely) not as much choice and variety as the a la carte. So, enjoy the menu, just choose your favourite things and prepare to be delighted. Some of our favourite dishes were vegetarian in origin, oh what a delight it is to eat fresh, snappy asparagus and crunchy, orb-like peas. We also loved the grain fed beef and Icelandic cod; two dishes of outstanding quality. Sweet dishes were also a revelation, while wine was matched to our dishes by a lovely sommelier, her approach perfectly echoing the culinary side of things with a variety of grapes and flavours punctuating our food perfectly. Cool reds with cod, a bold white with the asparagus, and a dynamic sweet wine with our delicious Valrhona white chocolate dessert. Texture is one of the best and most interesting restaurants in London at the moment, let alone NW, so get yourself there now, or you’ll have to fight us for a table. n www.texture-restaurant.co.uk

Recognising Restaurant Some of the world’s top architects and interior designers are descending on Canary Wharf's East Wintergarden to find out if they have what it takes to win at the UK and International Restaurant & Bar Design Awards

D esign

East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf

Totally independent and dedicated to recognising the most original and stimulating ideas from the design world, the UK and International Restaurant & Bar Design Awards are the only concept of their kind. Judging the awards, which feature entries from the world’s top architects, designers and hospitality operators, are a highly influential panel of top design and lifestyle personalities. Following on from Canteen and The Parlour who were included in last year’s award shortlist, Rocket Restaurant & Bar at Churchill Place is flying the flag for Canary Wharf in 2011. Nominated for the Multiple Restaurant award, Rocket will have to fend off competition from London’s Rosa’s, Bicester’s Busaba and Billericay’s Wildwood (soon to open a restaurant in Jubilee Place, Canary Wharf), if it is to take top prize. While the Canary Wharf restaurant may be the newest addition to the family-run Rocket chain, it hasn’t taken long for the venue to earn a reputation as one of the area’s top dining destinations. Already ticking the requisite boxes for great food, great wine, attentive staff and excellent lighting levels, a win at the 2011 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards would see Rocket gain the recognition it deserves for its truly innovative and inspiring decor. The prestigious ceremony and party is being held within Canary Wharf’s East Wintergarden on 7 July from 6.30pm. With the organisers having asked six of this year’s awards shortlisted restaurants (including Rocket) to produce a canapé style catering solution inspired from their own menu, the all-inclusive ‘Cocktails & Canapé’ party promises to be a night of design recognition and gastronomic creation.

2011 nominee Rocket Restaurant & Bar, Canary Wharf

“A series of giant, old-fashioned paintings with gilt gold frames are hung in an arc on the ceilings, clashing in a wonderful way with red lampshades, striped chairs and lime green wallpaper. Brilliantly modern, informal and stylish.” One critic’s view of why Rocket Restaurant & Bar at Canary Wharf stands an excellent chance of being awarded the UK Multiple Restaurant accolade For tickets visit www.restaurantandbardesignawards.com UK and International Restaurant & Bar Design Awards 6.30pm, 7 July 2011 East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf, E14 5NX www.canarywharf.com

Ten Minutes with Founder of the UK and International Restaurant & Bar Design Awards

This year’s nominees are competing in the following categories:

Marco Rebora and Sophie Douglas from Fusion Design & Architecture who was shortlisted with Canary Wharf’s Rocket Restaurant & Bar

For projects located in the UK: • Independent Restaurant • Multiple Restaurant • Independent Bar or Club • Multiple Bar or Club • Restaurant or Bar in a hotel • Restaurant, bar or club in another space

What was the inspiration behind the first Restaurant & Bar Design Awards?

• Café or fast food • Pub • Identity and website design

For projects based both in the UK and elsewhere: • Lighting

For projects located outside of the UK: • International restaurant • International bar

2011 nominee The Chan, Greece

MP: The inspiration came from the realisation that there were no awards dedicated exclusively to design out there, nationally or internationally. The Restaurant & Bar Design Awards is the only awards of its kind that rewards both the designers and operators for design excellence. With restaurants and bars being very challenging yet rewarding spaces to conceive, practically every architect at some time will have designed one. In addition to companies that specialise in hospitality projects, we have had entries from over 60 countries and from big name architects like Foster & Partners and Zaha Hadid.

What made you choose Canary Wharf as home to this year’s awards? MP: The wonderful Anna Watts (owner of Rocket Restaurant & Bar in Canary Wharf) suggested that we hold the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards ceremony there. Canary Wharf is the perfect location for our Awards in that it is easily accessible, is known worldwide and has every type of food service operation imaginable.

How important is design to the success of a restaurant, bar or pub?

2010 nominee The Parlour, Canary Wharf

SD: Design should not be seen as the most important part of a restaurant bar or pub, but it is a critical part of the overall offer and, along with the food, drink and service, should form a coherent and successful package. The design scheme will set the tone and market position, it can relax, challenge, excite, comfort and reassure. Design will attract the customer in the first place, direct the customer through the process and govern how long the customer stays. A good design may not be immediately obvious but well utilised space, finishes, furniture and lighting will greatly enhance the customers’ experience.

What is the most important element to bear in mind when designing a restaurant, bar or pub?

2011 nominee Wildwood, Billericay

SD: The customer! The design has to be carefully considered around who the customer is and what they are looking for. It should aim to exceed their expectations on all levels.

Women in art A new exhibition from The Society of Women Artists celebrates 150 years of cultural inspiration and ground breaking pieces from the fairer sex

A

mere 150 years ago, women were virtually exempt from the art world. It was considered too shocking for women to display their artwork in London, and those who dared to, had to used pseudonyms, such was the potential scandal. The Society of Women Artists (SWA) which was established in 1857 to support women artists, has travelled a fascinating and exciting road since, from enjoying considerable public attention at the start to the support of well chosen patrons who gave prestige and generous backing to the pioneer artists. In 1865, Royal Patronage followed and continues to this day, through HRH Princess Michael of Kent who will be opening the event at private event on 29 June. Since the early days the society has grown into a highly competitive forum for women artists, and is constantly developing as a diverse and forward looking organisation. This year it celebrates the 150th annual exhibition at the splendidly refurbished Mall Galleries where you can view the stunning and eclectic mix of artwork. Members, together with talented non-members, will be showcasing paintings in all mediums, sculptures, original prints, miniatures, etchings and ceramics. In celebration of this important milestone in the society’s history, the exhibition will showcase a retrospective of works from many of the prominent women artists who have played a pivotal role in the society. President Barbara Penketh Simpson has acted as curator of this special exhibition featuring amongst others, the famous Royal Academicians – Dames Laura Knight, Elizabeth Frink and Elizabeth Butler. The exhibition will also feature work from honorary members including portraiture from June Mendoza OBE and Daphne Todd OBE. n The Exhibition is open from 30 June – 9 July (closes 1pm on final day) www.society-women-artists.org.uk

A global approach We talk to managing director Neil Sloam about Brian Lack’s future plans, and discover that the Company’s unique approach to business is all about local expertise with an international outlook

I

t’s one thing to specialise in your local area, but it’s quite another to specialise in your clients. In fact, I’d go so far as to say it’s a unique concept that is hard to find in any sector. And yet, at Brian Lack & Company (BL&CO), the approach is completely focused on the very specific needs of its clients. With offices in St John’s Wood, Knightsbridge and Belgrade, Serbia the agency is clearly looking to specialise in only those areas that are of interest to their clients, ensuring a complete focus on service and expertise. “We do find that there’s a lot of crossover between all three of our offices,” explains Neil. “In fact the reason we opened the Belgrade office was because such a large proportion of our client base was either looking to buy properties over there, or were moving to London and looking to sell a property in Serbia. Doing this has meant we are able to manage every aspect of their moving process. And it’s an approach we’d be keen to continue as we grow.” The company has plans to increase their provision across Eastern Europe, the Middle East and the Far East, as well as currently offering numerous properties from France, Switzerland and Turkey on the international pages of their website.

As part of the company’s development and expansion the West Hampstead office recently closed, allowing more resource to be focused on St John’s Wood and Knightsbridge. “We felt that the West Hampstead office has started to operate a separate entity, rather than enhancing the provision at our other offices. We wanted to hone our speciality rather than spread ourselves too thin, hence the move.” BL&CO offers comprehensive buying, selling, letting, property management, acquisition and relocation services, but in addition also provides a series of unique client-focused solutions. “We run a Merc S65 AMG with a chauffeur for our clients to take them around London, showing them properties, and we’ll even pick them up from the airport,” explains Neil. The company is also expanding its portfolio to yachts, with several stunning Sunseekers now available to view on their website. In addition, Neil Sloam personally undertakes property searches for his clients throughout London and the rest of the UK, while the company can also work with developers selling properties off plan to create CGI images of apartments and buildings. Being a small, independent agency means the company also has the capacity to react quickly and decisively to changes in the market, giving them the advantage of being able to tailor-make their marketing and management strategies. “Whether you are renting or buying, this is an investment in your lifestyle,” explains Neil. “The length of time our tenants and owner occupiers remain in their property, or hold onto their investments, reflects the time, effort and passion we put into finding the right long term home for them. Every property characterises its own lifestyle and when making such an investment in yours, it is fundamental to get it right, first time.” n 020 7586 5929 www.brianlack.co.uk

Mauritian Magic Having been known as a beautiful holiday destination for many years, Mauritius is now poised to become an accessible location for a luxurious second home

O

n the 1 August high-end property company Villas de Maitre will unveil a stunning complex of fourteen rental homes in Tamarin, on the West Coast, which are expected to generate huge demand. The area has developed from a traditional fishing village into an attractive and popular location for residents and visitors, who value its ethic richness and amenities. Set amidst the rolling hills, Tamarin is well-connected to Port Louis and Curepipe and boasts a beautiful coast-line with extensive sporting

opportunities. Days can be spent kayaking and scuba-diving, while dolphin-watching is another unsurprising draw for the region. The Leora Beachfront development itself is surrounded by lush gardens with paths which lead directly the beach beyond. This gives it a tranquil ambience and provides ample space to enjoy the warm climate. Three golf courses are also close by, as well as various shops, bars and restaurants. Fashion and interior design boutiques are located at Ruisseau Creole, alongside Italian dining rooms and tempting delicatessens. However, for ultimate relaxation,

food can be ordered in from local eateries to be enjoyed in the comfort of the grounds or on the apartments’ private balconies. Should you prefer unwinding on the terrace to laying on the beach, a large pool is set in front of the complex, flanked by a decked area which positively screams ‘cocktails!’ while the many loungers and umbrellas make for a relaxing afternoon. Inside, accommodation consists of twelve apartments and two penthouses, all of which are of a high-specification and arranged into four low-level blocks. With three spacious bedrooms as

standard, there is plenty of room for the inevitable quota of visitors. Conveniently, in the penthouses all of these bedrooms have their own en-suite, and in every property, the master features a swanky bathtub. As you’d expect, kitchens and living areas are beautifully styled and equipped with modern conveniences such as high-tech washing machines and microwaves. The two rooms form a fluid, open-plan design which floods the homes with light and is enhanced by a neutral colour palette, luxe ceramics and hardwoods. Each feature has been chosen to keep the homes cool and ensure they look suitably chic. It must also be said that the attention to detail is impressive. Crockery and cutlery sets reflect

maximum occupancy and touches like BBQ utensils and coffee machines, will suit those who are used to city life. As will the wall-mounted 40” flat-screen television, iPod docking station and DVD player integrated into each lounge. The Lenora Beachfront Apartments also benefit from the services you’d expect of a fivestar holiday resort. Maids clean the apartments six times per week and provide a very regular change of linen, which is of course, all very fine quality. There is also an on-site manager who is on-hand to answer questions and oversee the maintenance of the communal areas. Upon arrival, expect a generous fruit basket, lovely sparkling wine, delicious

croissants and free daily newspapers to help you settle and relax! n www.leorabeach.com

Hamptons International, comments on

talks about the current trends in the sales market

the current trends in the rental market

As we move into the summer months the rental market in St John’s Wood, Regents Park and Maida Vale is booming; we’re particularly encouraged to see that stock levels are up on last year, providing the market with a much needed variety. Although demand continues to out weigh supply, a recent increase in supply is helping to balance the rate of growth in rents. Last month alone, we experienced a 19 per cent increase in new rental properties on our books. We have seen residential rents increased by approximately 16 per cent in 2011 and demand from overseas corporate clients is on the increase. Rents in St John’s Wood, Regents Park and Maida Vale have already risen by at least 3.6 per cent in the first three months of this year. Central London rents are traditionally driven by demand from corporate tenants from overseas, this market has been on the increase since the recovery in the financial and business services sector in 2009. Price growth has been particularly evident in locations where renewed City confidence has translated into boosted demand for good rental property, both from domestic and international tenants. From this we have seen an increase in the number of relocations. These increases mean that in some instances rental values in St Johns Wood and Regents Park are now 15 per cent above the peak prices of 2007. It is expected that rental growth should continue to increase in line with improving supply levels. However prospective tenants still have to compete for the best properties and are often having to make decisions quickly in order to secure their preferred choices. With first time buyer mortgage lending unlikely to improve for the foreseeable future and the banks continuing to ask for larger deposits, we feel demand for rental property will remain very high well into next year.

As we move from the late spring to summer market, traditionally the busiest time of an estate agent’s year, it is ever more apparent that there is still an extraordinarily strong market around with demand outstripping supply many times over. Although there is, on occasion, some sensitivity to prices, there is no question that price levels achieved for properties continue to increase, soaring way past previous record levels of the summer of 2007. A continuing weak pound combined with uncertainty abroad makes London a particularly attractive proposition for overseas buyers, but there is no doubt that the real driving force behind the North West London property market is the local buyer. In a survey carried out on all recent transactions that took place across all our offices, 83 per cent of buyers already lived within the postcode areas that we cover. The local market is exceptionally buoyant, more so than ever, and, as always, there are never enough new instructions to satisfy the demand. North West London is an area for people aspire to live in – places such as Hampstead, Highgate, Primrose Hill, Regents Park and St John’s Wood all conjure up evocative images and this, allied with the excellent schools, green spaces and multiple transport options to the City, Canary Wharf and West End, makes an outstanding case for people to live here. There are no signs apparent to indicate that the market in this area is likely to change from its present upward course for the foreseeable future; there will of course be the traditional August lull and the consensus for interest rates seems to be for a rise in 2012. So all of the indicators show that the market for the latter part of the year will continue to be robust, with no doubt more record prices being achieved.
