fter the overwhelming success of a celebratory and spectacular Jubilee weekend, that saw an outpouring of pomp, ceremony and excitement from Londoners young and old, London’s eventfilled summer continues apace. And with only a few short weeks to the start of the Olympics, we are definitely getting in the mood. However you personally feel about the biggest tournament in the world coming to London – and however much its impact will be felt on your car journeys, coffee runs, or commutes to work – there is certainly something rather sporting in the air. We’ve taken inspiration from the Games for our fashion feature this month; shot on location at the staggeringly beautiful grounds of Harrow School, couture gowns are juxtaposed with discus, javelin and archery. See the results on p. 32. Locally, we’ve found time, in between the lashings of rain, to enjoy the floral displays in Regent’s Park (p. 13), find out where Stuart Daniel from Coco Bijoux in West Hampstead buys his whisky and cigars (p. 20), and speak to Hollywood actor and longtime Muswell Hill resident Tom Wilkinson (p. 16). Speaking of well-known residents, Mike Peake took a blue plaque tour through the leafy enclaves of NW London (p. 8), uncovering such treasures as Marie Tussaud’s, Richard Burton’s and John Constable’s previous residences. Other events this summer haven’t passed us by either – we loved the Marylebone Summer Fayre at the end of June – especially since the sun decided to shine all day for it; while the Portman Village Diamond Jubilee Street Party proved the perfect way to kick start the summer season – see all the pictures on p. 18. Also this month, the Dorset Square Hotel in Marylebone reopened, and we met with designer Kit Kemp to find out her inspiration behind its unique interiors (p. 47). Finally, if you fancy escaping London for the country this summer, then we’ve sought out some of the best English country gardens (with beautiful hotels attached) for you to explore (p. 89).

Blue history
The leafy enclaves of North West London are filled with blue plaque properties, denoting a whole host of the great and good of English heritage that resided here. Mike Peake takes a leisurely stroll through the past

“Many of us like to believe that we understand the point of history. But it is hard to make the imaginative leap that truly connects us to the past. Blue plaques address this defect.”

T
here is a fun – if ultimately rather pointless – little widget at a website called blueplaque.com which lets you type in some personal details before they magically appear on a virtual blue plaque. ‘Jessica Smith, Supermum, lived here’ for example, or – more likely – ‘Tim Stevens, Lothario’. It’s the nearest most of us will ever get to the prestige and immortality that comes with a genuine, English Heritage blue plaque, but probably not ideal for printing out and mounting above your front door. Better to wait and see what life has in store for you instead. You don’t need to be a film star or internationallyacclaimed musician for your brickwork to qualify for some of London’s most intriguing signage. A heroic deed or a surprise discovery might do the trick, and history suggests you’re in with a chance: Hampstead, St John’s Wood, Marylebone, Regent’s Park – this vibrant corner of London is positively teeming with blue plaques, having been home to artists, intellectuals, musicians and a wide assortment of interesting/unusual oddities, too. These dinner plate-sized portals to a world gone by started life in 1863 as ‘memorial tablets’, when a community-minded MP named William Ewart suggested to the Commons that it might be a good idea to let Londoners know the history behind their buildings. A writer in the Times got it spot on when he wrote in 1873 that the plaques would, ‘make our houses their own biographers’; and now there are more than 800 to make
us stop, point and ponder during a stroll around town. Two pub-quiz winning facts: the plaques haven’t always been blue (they’ve also been both brown and green), and they haven’t all survived, because blue plaque status doesn’t confer any special protection on a building. As the London landscape evolved over the past 140 years, plaques by the dozen were lost to the bulldozer. But more than 80 per cent are still in place today. “Many of us like to believe that we understand the point of history,” says the actor Stephen Fry, who has been a member of the blue plaque advisory committee for several years. “But it is hard to make the imaginative leap that truly connects us to the past. Blue plaques address this defect.” To be considered for one – English Heritage only approve about nine per year – you need to have been deceased for two whole decades to make sure your popularity wasn’t just a flash-in-the-pan, and the building with which you are associated must still be standing. Nominees must also be considered ‘eminent by a majority of their own profession’ and ‘have made an important contribution to human welfare or happiness’, which not only prevents the blue plaque scheme from becoming a macabre map of ne’er-do-wells, it gives all sorts of interesting people a chance. People like pathologist Bernard Spilsbury, for example, who lived at 31 Marlborough Hill in St John’s Wood. The perfect subject for a turn-of-the-century version of CSI, his pioneering forensic science techniques
saw him help send both Dr Crippen and Brides In The Bath killer George Joseph Smith to the hangman. He might not be John Lennon (34 Montagu Square in Marylebone), but that’s not the point. A good blue plaque should, perhaps, make you think – not start throwing flowers or kissing the brickwork. Most blue plaques have distinctly less grisly connections than Mr Spilsbury’s, such as the one which marks the home of sculptor Gilbert Bayes at 4 Greville Place in St John’s Wood. His work will doubtless have caught your eye on a shopping trip to Selfridges: the magnificent Queen Of Time statue which sits atop the main Oxford Street entrance to the century old store is one of his best-known works. Not far away from Bayes at 24 Wellington Road lived waxwork pioneer Madame Tussaud. She was there from 1838-39 while writing her memoirs. The number of actors on the blue plaque list is surprisingly small, but Hampstead arguably boasts the best: Richard Burton lived at 6 Lyndhurst Road for seven years from 1949. He was there with his first wife, Welsh actress Sybil Williams, but as his fame – and earnings – escalated, he was effectively driven out by the prevailing 90 per cent top tax rate at the time. He fled to Switzerland, his wife in tow, but they were divorced by 1963. Not all blue plaque unveilings attract the attention of the media, but the one in Lyndhurst Road drew quite a crowd when actor Michael Sheen, who grew up in Burton’s home town of Port Talbot, was asked to do the honours at the end of last year. “It has always been an hour for me to be associated with the wizard of wild Welsh magic that was Richard Burton,” said Sheen, who starred in Frost/Nixon and The Queen. “It gives me great pleasure to help mark one of the spots from where he cast his brooding spells over London and the world.” Elsewhere across north west London, literary figures abound. Brave New World author Aldous Huxley and other members of the celebrated Huxley family lived at Number 16 Bracknell Gardens, a quiet, tree-lined road in Hampstead. It’s a large building, too, with seven bedrooms and five receptions – hence a price tag in excess of £2m when it went on the market in 2003. Nearby there’s a nostalgic delight at 1 Byron Villas, where a 30-year-old D.H. Lawrence lived in 1915, not long after the publication of his earliest masterpiece, Sons And Lovers. Another fascinating property awaits the blue plaque hunter just a short stroll up the south-western edge of Hampstead Heath: the lodgings of a certain John Keats. Today Keats’ House in Keats Grove is where you will find a thriving museum dedicated to the man who penned ‘Ode To A Nightingale’ – and no better place on earth than to immerse yourself in the world of Britain’s finest ever romantic poet. There are so many well-known figures who have made central London’s leafy northern fringes their home that it can be hard to pick out a favourite. And, indeed, to stop an article about them reading like a list. Poet W.B. Yeats (23 Fitzroy Road, Primrose Hill); Ted Hughes and his wife Sylvia Plath (3 Chalcot Square, Primrose Hill); William Blake, one of Britain’s
10
finest painters (Old Wyldes’, North End, Hampstead) – all are worth a look-see if you’re passing by. There are more: John Constable, the majestic landscape painter lived at 40 Well Walk in Hampstead. David Ben-Gurion, first Prime Minister of Israel, lived at 75 Warrington Crescent in Maida Vale. Alan Turing, widely considered the father of computer science, was born in the same street. Our preference, however, is for anything that really anchors the building and person to a specific point in time. As Stephen Fry says: “In my mind all blue plaques are contemporaneous, which is to say, the people commemorated by them are in their buildings now.” Stand outside number 10 Kent Terrace in Regent’s Park, for example, and you may just feel the ghost of a school-age E.H. Shepard, the man who so vividly brought Winnie The Pooh and friends to life when he drew them for the first editions of A.A. Milne’s now-treasured children’s books. Returning to the house before he died, Shepard found it empty and locked up: “So, remembering what I used to do when I was seven,” he said, with a cheeky grin. “I got in through the back door.” Just as stirring is the notion that pilot Guy Gibson, freshly returned from leading the famous bouncing bomb dam-busters mission in the Ruhr, would have played over the attack in his head at his home at 32 Aberdeen Place in St John’s Wood. He lived there only briefly before he was sadly killed in action in 1944. One of London’s finest addresses is undoubtedly Regent’s Park, where one of the loveliest streets is Hanover Terrace, built by architect John Nash in 1822. Today, weekly rental prices for a large house can be well into five figures, which shows just how well composer Ralph Vaughan Williams had done in his own lifetime. The man who created ‘Fantasia’ on Greensleeves and the timeless ‘The Lark Ascending’ lived at Number 10 from 1953 until his death in 1958. A few doors away at number 13, lived H.G. Wells, author of The Invisible Man and The Time Machine. The magic that lingers here is palpable. Regent’s Park and its immediate environs have been home to innumerable historical figures. Thery also include the homes of Victorian inventor Sir Charles Wheatstone (19 Park Crescent) and Lord Joseph Lister, the respected pioneer of antiseptic surgery (12 Park Crescent). However, whether you’re in Regent’s Park, Hampstead, Highgate or St John’s Wood, a blue plaque – and the chance to gaze and wonder – is never far away. Predictably, we’ve saved our favourite until last. Flat 1, Ornan Court in Belsize Park is an unassuming address, but it’s right here that David Devant lived. The David Blaine of the 1920s, he was the first President of The Magic Circle, and while the walls of Ornan Court might not have born witness to such earth-changing ideas as the ones that Joseph Lister or David BenGurion once leaned against, this is where the greatest showman of his day quietly perfected his magic. One of Devant’s most-loved tricks was to produce an assortment of different alcoholic drinks from an ordinarylooking kettle. Who – if you’ll excuse the pun – wouldn’t raise a glass to that? n

Time of
Roses As the summer sun brings colour and warmth to our gardens, now is the ideal time to explore the delights of Queen Mary’s Gardens, Regent’s Park

“You love the roses — so do I. I wish The sky would rain down roses, as they rain From off the shaken bush. Why will it not? Then all the valley would be pink and white And soft to tread on. They would fall as light As feathers, smelling sweet; and it would be Like sleeping and like waking, all at once!”

riting in the 19th century under her pseudonym George Eliot, Mary Anne Evans captured the beauty of the most symbolic of flowers, in a verse simply entitled ‘Roses’. And there are few places where the poem resonates quite as much at this time of year as in Queen Mary’s Gardens in Regent’s Park, home to over 85 varieties of rose, and 12,000 individual plants arranged in both separate flowerbeds and in vibrant mixed shrubberies. The arrangements were laid in 1932, when land originally leased to the Royal Botanic Society to fund the lavish lifestyle of Prince Regent, was regained. The society had set out this space as an inner circle containing lawns and a lake, and today sweeping arches of flora testify to this template, as do the curve of the grand iron and gilded gates which mark the main entrance to the formal gardens near York Bridge. The gates were donated in 1935 by local artist Sigismund Goetz who created them to mark the Silver Jubilee of the former Prince, then King George V, as well as the official opening of Queen Mary’s Gardens, named in honour

Blushes of coral, pale pink, peach and intense fuchsia blooms impart a corner of a countryside summer into the capital of his wife. Goetz’s contribution to the gardens received its own tribute 15 years later when the Triton fountain – a bronze sculpture of a sea god and mermaids, was installed in the gardens’ pond at the original site of the Royal Botanic Society’s greenhouse. Of course, it is not just the heritage of Queen Mary’s Gardens which draw visitors from around the world: the heady, sweet perfume of the rose garden at its heart is enveloping and uplifting, intertwined with the scent of herbaceous perennials which were chosen to add mystery and privacy to the garden. Huge, flossy yellow heads of Golden Phab roses can be seen at the entrance, giving way to romantic bouquets of red roses, with dreamy names such as Pride of England and Velvet Fragrance. Keen horticulturalists will note Ice Cream and Polar Star are among the delicate white varieties on show and can spend
hours marvelling at the rare inclusions, but, for most, a visit is all about admiring the collective bursts of bright colour – blushes of coral, pale pink, peach and intense fuchsia blooms impart a corner of a countryside summer into the capital, even on the most overcast of days. Benches are scattered throughout and the displays wind their way up to the Garden Café where refreshments are available, providing a relaxed setting for a leisurely afternoon. “Queen Mary’s rose garden is internationally renowned. There are 85 single varieties on display here, including our own ‘Royal Parks’ rose,” explains Andrew Williams, assistant manager at Regent’s Park. “We have examples of most rose varieties from the classics to the most modern English roses. The rich sights and scents of these marvellous plants play such an important part in the delightful experience of visiting Queen Mary’s Gardens.” n Queen Mary’s Gardens Opening Times: 5am-dusk Regent’s Park, NW1 www.royalparks.org.uk/parks/the-regents-park

As the entire country geared up for the Diamond Jubilee, Portman Village took advantage of some good weather and hosted a wonderful celebration for local residents and businesses. Intriguing street stalls served as gateways to special treats, including mini neck massages, wine-tastings and styling consultations, while international culinary delights were on offer alongside heavily discounted designer clothing. Shops were decorated to celebrate the Jubilee, and there were plenty of activities to keep little ones happy too, with games such as giant Jenga and chess, face painting, Punch & Judy shows and plenty of workshops geared towards creating crowns and tiaras. OUT & ABOUT
I live in Finchley and enjoy walking in Sunny Hill Park in Hendon – a large hilly park, with wonderful views on a sunny day and, as always, what also attracts me, is the good food – there is a cafe there which serves the most wonderful freshly prepared Middle Eastern food – my long time favourite is their falafel in pitta bread with a glass of fresh Morrocan mint tea.
eating & drinking COFFEE The Nordic Bakery in Marylebone is a classic uncluttered Scandanavian Café, and I love their traditional open rye bread sandwiches and renowned hefty cinnamon buns. It’s also a great space to spend some quiet time with a laptop and their wonderful coffee! Order the short latte which has a tiny bit of froth on the top – small enough not to be a cappuccino but delicious and easy to drink with no bitterness. www.nordicbakery.com
DRINKS Robert Graham in Broadhurst Gardens is a strange choice for someone who doesn’t smoke, nor enjoys drinking spirits! But I am still drawn to visit this wonderful museum of whiskies and cigars. When you walk into the warm wood lined shop, you can sense this is a specialist with a legacy of 137 years behind them, offering the finest Scottish whiskies, handmade Cuban cigars and interesting accessories – all serving as wonderful gifts. Plus, this was the shop that gave me the final inspiration for opening Cocoa Bijoux! www.whisky-cigars.co.uk

Luxury swimwear label Paolita has opened a boutique in New Quebec Street, just moments from the heart of Marylebone village. The brand is known for bikinis and onepieces with a vintage feel and regularly stages lively presentations as part of London Fashion Week. Designer Anna Paolita’s studio is also on site, enabling visitors to book a fitting and seek advice on styling from the lady herself throughout the year. “As the boutique is located on a quaint side street, it’s an intimate haven from the bustling central London streets, but we are only a two minute walk from Oxford Street,” says managing director Joseph Bachman. “Currently we are selling a range of bikinis, one-pieces and beachwear from Paolita’s most recent collections and our two-piece bathing suits are sold as separates, which gives our customers the opportunity to customize the fit of their bathing suits to their body shape. The airy space is perfect for trying on bathing suits and the white walls and minimalist design let the colours of the bathing suits speak for themselves.” The existing range incorporates nautical stripes, frills and candy colours as well as tropical and tattoo-esque prints set across all manner of shapes from ambitious cut-outs to modest halter neck swimsuits. www.paolita.co.uk

DESIGNS FOR Maria Grachvogel has leant her passion for design to a fantastic cause, says Gabrielle Lane
T
his summer, inspired by courageous brain tumour patient Mason Fountain, life coach Antonio Marsocci has recruited notable figures to design charms for a bracelet which is in keeping with his ‘Think Positive’ brand message; the initiative will see an adornment with a motivational tone unveiled each month, with all profits supporting Brain Tumour UK. Eminent British fashion designer Maria Grachvogel, who has designed the first piece, chose the word ‘dream’ crafted in silver and held a fundraising event in store this May. And within minutes of meeting her at her flagship London boutique, it’s clear that this is not an airy-fairy, wishful thinking kind of ‘dream’; this charm embodies power and determination. Maria herself is incredibly eloquent, even though
life
she hasn’t previously seen the questions I’ve prepared – an unusual occurrence in an age of careful PR management. She sweeps into the boutique dressed in a striking black jumpsuit from her Spring/Summer collection (“It’s easy and comfortable – a dress is great but a jumpsuit gives that extra level of comfort, you can run about in it, sit on the floor in it, dance in it, it feels completely effortless” she later tells me). We settle on armchairs she painted herself, in the centre of her store and its clear her articulate disposition is rooted in her passion for the cause. “It meant a lot to me on a personal level,” she explains. “I’ve had a few family friends affected by brain tumours and somebody that I know quite well that’s currently affected by one. I was approached by Antonio and it was a mixture of the cause and also loving the
29
fa s h i o n
idea of the Think Positive message – I like the idea of wearing a charm bracelet with lots of different messages for feeling good; positive thinking does overcome many different things and can help with many different illnesses.” Maria has certainly proven that hard work and enthusiasm pays off. Having had decades of success within the fashion industry she is currently overseeing the expansion of her stores into Asia. She describes her signature style as glamorous, feminine and strong and enoying designing for confident women with their own sense of identity. “The biggest [style tip] is about learning who you are as a woman, not only what suits your body shape,” she says. “I’ve seen an hourglass, curvy woman wearing really fitted, outrageous clothes and looking amazing but equally that same body shape with someone less confident...they wouldn’t be able to carry it. I’d say to someone, know your character and lifestyle and start to build a wardrobe that’s going to say something about you.” Victoria Beckham is amongst those who have turned to Maria for sophisticated looks in the past and even modelled part of her collection on the runway in 2000. “Victoria was always incredibly stylish, always had a strong sense of what worked. She loved what I did, we
worked together for a long time,” Maria explains. “She told me she was going to start a fashion collection and I said, ‘that would be great’. She has a strong sense of who she is and she’s incredible at marketing, she’s done phenomenally well, I’m proud of her.” Maria is currently in planning mode for the year ahead and comes to our meeting fresh from a business call to Hong Kong, but she’s very clear that it is away from her hectic schedule that her designs emerge. “The key component is peace. When you’re busy running about it doesn’t happen, you have to make time. I’m definitely more of an instinctive designer.” n www.mariagrachvogel.com
the ‘dream’ charm Rather than considering different words for her charm, Maria says ‘dream’ immediately resonated with her: “In a sense – don’t dream it, just be it,” she says. “We all have dreams, aspirations and hopes. Some of us take them through and some of us think we can’t. The word dream connected the most with me.”

Summer in Paris Designer’s Guild in Marylebone has unveiled the latest collection to be designed by Maison Christian Lacroix. Air de Paris was envisaged as the journey of a woman from Arles to the cosmopolitan heart of the French capital. “In this journey from Arles to Paris we pick up momentos en route and references to iconic elements, which are part of the eclectic heritage of the house,” explains Sacha Walckoff from Lacroix. The fabrics feature reinterpretations of the damask prints bought to France from India in the 17th century, as well as luxurious cut velvets based upon a motif found on a vintage Provencal silk petticoat. In the wallpaper collection, trompe l’oil – or the native art of visual illusion – is employed to achieve a wood grain effect, while a collage of memorabilia from Christian Lacroix was reproduced as a high resolution digital print. In true Designer’s Guild style, the assemblage incorporates charming, rustic tones as well as vibrant florals. www.designersguild.com

Eating breakfast under the forlorn gaze of John William Waterhouse’s Lady of Shalott (1888) might not immediately appeal but you can be certain that the application of JW Walls’ bespoke papers will be a talking point over supper. The company produce high quality prints which can be applied to both residential and commercial spaces and while clients can select any image, an inspiring portfolio shows just how creative and aesthetically enhancing the service can be: reproductions of the Mona Lisa dominate stairwells, Italian frescoes curve across ceilings and sweep along corridors and street art injects a modern vibrancy into the most conventional of living areas. www.jwwalls.com

With national pride stoked by the Diamond Jubilee and impending Olympic Games, we admire the commemorative yet timeless furniture produced by the British design house of Linley. Later this year Linley’s Horse Guards’ Parade Desk will be auctioned in aid of The Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry and is predicted to raise over £120,000 for vulnerable young people. Over 1400 hours of craftsmanship sees an intricate replica of the building provide the main gallery of the walnut and Bombay rosewood desk, which is completed with Doric column legs, six drawers and several secret compartments. A fitting inspiration, Horse Guards’ Parade is home to the Household Cavalry who form the Long Guard of the Queen and will also serve as the backdrop to the volleyball competitions of the Games. www.davidlinley.com
FORM AND FUNCTION
When Ilse Crawford was commissioned to produce a new range for luxury Scandinavian design house Georg Jensen she looked to the history of the brand and its connection with its native public. The former founding editor of Elle Decoration is British-born, though with a Danish mother she was the perfect person to capture a sense of ‘hygge’ or comfort in the collection of functional items. The idea was to bring charm to everyday activities by making simple accessories such as boxes, bowls, vases and a candle holder, that bit more beautiful. Copper, glass and black glass were added to Georg Jensen’s traditional silver and polished steel materials. Ilse Collection by Georg Jensen available at Harrods, www.georgjensen.com

The newest addition to Firmdale Hotels’ portfolio of glamorous boutique properties is a stylish Regency townhouse in Dorset Square which perfectly reflects the company’s tradition of bold design and lavish interiors 47
O
n the 18 June luxury boutique hotel group Firmdale Hotels unveiled its latest design project, the Dorset Square Hotel. A beautiful Regency townhouse in Marylebone, the property consists of 38 unique bedroom suites with the same attention-to-detail and lavishness bestowed on its incredibly successful sister hotels in London and New York. Kit Kemp, the joint owner of Firmdale Hotels (with husband Tim), is responsible for the intriguing and decadent styling, which was born out of a desire to contrast the ‘stuffiness’ of some high-end establishments together with a love of colour, art and texture. “At Dorset Square I’ve actually used more traditional colours to reflect the location’s heritage, such as ointment pink, heritage green and burnt sienna,” explains Kit. “I’ve kept in mind the hotel’s Regency architecture and it made sense to draw on a cricket motif, after all, Dorset Square was the site of Thomas Lord’s first cricket ground. The Potting Shed [bar and restaurant] on the lower ground floor has a wonderful light installation by Martha Freud which is made up of 198 little lights that light up and fade and spell out cricket sayings. In the hallways I’ve once more used original wallpaper, this time based on an original poster from the 1950s.” In addition to the award-winning nature of her career, Kit is the perfect person to oversee the transformation of the hotel, having been involved in the original decoration of the property in 1985 when it was one of her first design projects. “It’s a curious journey coming back and doing it all again in 2012,” she says.

Equation of Time As its name suggests, Arnold & Son’s Hornet World Timer Skeleton is both a skeleton watch and world timer. As such, it profits from rolling into one, two watches whose popularity has exploded in recent times. More than that, though, what sets this watch apart is its unique combination of three rather unusual functions: the equation of time, a multiple time-zone display and a double-disc big date display. Modern day embodiments of John Arnold’s original timepieces – the 18th century watchmaker who, in dedicating his life to measuring longitude, gave the world its first chronometer – each Arnold & Son watch boasts its own unique in-house movement, complete with some of the industry’s most sophisticated complications. The complexity of this watch is provided by six central hands and an advanced mechanism that allows it to display the mean solar time of any location according to its longitude. Arnold & Son’s Hornet World Timer Skeleton watch, limited to just 50 pieces, priced at £16,800 each, www.arnoldandson.com

watch news Turning Back Time The Royal Arcade’s Watch Club was been dealing in vintage watches since 1981. Senior partner Danny Pizzigoni tells us which timepieces to look out for What’s the allure of owning a vintage watch? During WWI, soldiers crudely adapted cumbersome pocket watches for the wrist and it is my opinion that the greatest wristwatches ever were made between 1940 and 1975. It was a ground-breaking time in wristwatch history; everything was innovative and there was no precedent. Modern watches are simply variations, sometimes exact copies, of these vintage originals.
By Royal Approval Since 1929, Jaeger-LeCoultre has held the world record for producing the smallest mechanical watch movement. The Calibre 101 consists of 98 tiny parts that together weigh barely a gram; it also boasts the accolade of being the movement inside the timepiece Her Majesty The Queen wore to her coronation. 60 years on, the brand is celebrating the Diamond Jubilee by creating a special limited engraved edition of its iconic Reverso watch.
Personalised with the logo of the Diamond Jubilee Pageant and a commemorative message, the Grande Reverso Ultra Thin will be limited to six pieces in a men’s version and six in a ladies’ version. The 12 pieces follow the 101 jewellery timepiece Jaeger-LeCoultre CEO Jérôme Lambert presented to Her Majesty last month. www.jaeger-lecoultre.com

Which brands hold their value best? Rolex and Patek Philippe are the obvious contenders. $1 million for a perpetual calendar won’t even make the Evening Standard. Rare vintage sport Rolex, especially the likes of Comex, Military Subs, Paul Newman Daytonas, and technical watches like a moon phase, or triple calendar are all sound investments. Early Italian divers’ Panerais are also worth a mention, extremely rare and incredibly valuable. What’s important to look for in a vintage watch? Condition and provenance. Any aesthetic parts that have been changed during its life and any documentation lost during a house move affects the price and rarity. I had the chance to buy a perfect 1958 ‘lightning hand’ Milgauss 13 years ago, failed and haven’t stopped thinking about it ever since. Which brands do you find are the most popular? Rolex, Patek Philippe, Panerai, Audemars Piguet, IWC and JLC. We seem to do very well with Breguet also. Lange & Söhne are strong and so too is Cartier. www.watchclub.com

perfect Timing In the month before London hosts the 2012 Olympic Games, Richard Brown meets Omega President Stephen Urquhart to discuss the brand’s eight decade Olympic past, Apollo moon landings and the challenges of timing the fastest men and women on earth
T
hings didn’t quite go to plan for Omega when it launched the Olympic Countdown timer 18 months ago. A day after the 6.5 metre high clock was unveiled, amongst a fanfare of sparklers, fireworks and flashlight photography, it broke. Cue stifled media amusement and anxious looks of embarrassment between LOCOG, Lord Coe and the Official Timekeeper of the Games. Fortunately for Omega, its track record at the world’s greatest sporting event isn’t littered with similar moments of awkwardness. In fact, since it became the first company to be entrusted with keeping the time at the Los Angeles Games in 1932, Omega has been instrumental in defining, and then redefining, the way sport has been timed, recorded and verified. In the 80 years, and 24 Games, since it supplied LA with 30 high precision chronographs to record its races, Omega has bequeathed the world its first independent, portable and water-resistant photoelectric cell (1945), the first photofinish camera (1949), the first electronic group timing devices (1952), and swimming’s first touch-sensitive
58
contact pads (1967) – instruments that have proved vital in separating the winners from the losers as the skill margins between competitors has continually narrowed, something evidenced in the pool four years ago. As the final of Beijing’s 100-metre butterfly reached its dramatic conclusion, to the eyes of the stadium, and to the millions more glued to television screens across the world, the race looked to have been tied. It was left to Omega’s high-speed video cameras to verify the results. They confirmed that Michael Phelps had beaten Milorad Cavic into silver place… by a single hundredth of a second. When the 2012 Olympics roll into town they will hold a special significance for the Swiss watch brand. It was in 1948 that London last hosted the Games and it was in that year that Omega’s newly-introduced photoelectric cells and race finish photofinish camera changed the way athletes were timed. The sense of history linking the city to the watch brand is something Omega President Stephen Urquhart admits the company is happy to draw upon.
collection
“When the Games were last contested here, Omega was again Official Timekeeper and we’ve been contrasting these two Olympic Games in some of our marketing materials. We’ve actually been focusing more on our connection to the London 1948 than on the 80th anniversary of the Los Angeles 1932 Olympic Games. It’s been enjoyable to look back at 1948 and what we have described as ‘the birth of modern timekeeping’.” The birth of Omega’s pioneering equipment happened to coincide with the birth of a watch that would cement the watchmaker’s reputation as one of the industry’s heavyweights. Dating back to 1932 – when Omega had patented an innovative design for a unique diving watch – it had taken the Seamaster over a decade to jump from the drawing board to the production line. Part of Omega’s attempt to beat Rolex to the shops with the first water resistant wristwatch – which it did by six years – the Seamaster was not only technically groundbreaking, it was sleek, slender and good-looking enough to appeal to a market who had no intention of taking it anywhere near water.
collection
To commemorate the anniversary of a watch, Omega has unveiled the Seamaster 1948 Co-Axial ‘London 2012’. “We’ve created a watch that has been inspired by its [the original Seamaster’s] design but which is powered by our exclusive Co-Axial technology,” explains Mr Urquhart. “We also have posters that recall the 1948 100-metre sprint and the photoelectric cells and photofinish images that were introduced in that year.” Using Omega’s Caliber 2202 movement, the Seamaster ‘London 2012’ features an 18 karat gold medallion mounted on its back and, for obvious reasons, is limited to 1,948 pieces. While Omega’s association with the Olympic Games has been vital in garnering a reputation for precision, there’s another footnote in the company’s history that makes it the envy of every other watch manufacturer: Omega’s Speedmaster was the first timepiece to make it to the moon. “It is an incredibly important story for us,” says Urquhart. “Particularly because, when the Speedmaster was chosen, we knew nothing about it. The Speedmasters that became the only chronographs to meet the challenge were exactly the same as those available at retailers.” What’s more, the Speedmaster was the only piece of equipment used for every Apollo mission that required absolutely no modification during the testing process. “While we’re obviously proud of the six lunar landings, the story that really mattered was the fact that in 1964 and 1965 the Speedmaster survived the most rigorous testing ever devised for watches.” It was publically, and officially, an endorsement that no amount of money could have bought. “It’s worth noting that half a century after a Speedmaster was first worn in space, they are essentially unchanged today.” Omega’s achievement of sending the first timepiece to the moon wouldn’t be the only occasion the company turned the watch world green. Exactly 30 years later, Omega designed an escapement that had, until then, eluded all other manufacturers. “In 1894, the company created a mechanical watch calibre that revolutionised the way the Swiss watch industry made watches [the Omega],” explains Urquhart. “Then, in 1999, we launched the first series-produced watch to be equipped with a Co-Axial escapement… Like the Omega movement more than a century earlier, Co-Axial technology signalled
60
a revolution in mechanical watch making.” Urquhart isn’t being hyperbolic; the Co-Axial is the first practical new watch escapement to be invented in some 250 years. Differing from the traditional Swiss lever escapement by way of a balance roller carrying a pallet and an impulse pin, an anchor with three pallets, and a three-level coaxial escapement wheel, Omega’s movement really did change the way people thought about making watches. For Urquhart, reducing the amount of friction within a wristwatch and, in doing so, improving the precision of that watch, has been something of a career highlight. “It has been a privilege to be here as our CoAxial story has unfolded. It has played an essential role in restoring Omega to its position as one of the world’s leading watchmakers.” The close of Danny Boyle’s opening ceremony will mark the beginning of Omega’s 25th Olympic Games. Over a six week period the company’s timekeepers will be entrusted with the task of recording, displaying and distributing the results of 37 simultaneous world championships. While Urquhart admits that every Games bring its own logistic and technical challenges, in London’s case because of a mix of new and historic venues, Omega’s President shows no signs of being daunted by the task ahead. “At the end of the day, our challenge remains what it has always been: to deliver the best possible timekeeping service to the IOC, the federations and the athletes.” n

fast track to Radiance Gabrielle Lane joins the Vaishaly devotees at the Four Seasons Park Lane
T
his month I abandoned the Marylebone flagship of renowned facialist Vaishaly in favour of the grand and literal heights of the Four Seasons Park Lane – purely in the name of research, of course. Back in November, for the very first time, Vaishaly imparted her wisdom to carefully selected therapists at the five star hotel’s rooftop spa, enabling clients to experience her expertise and avoid jostling for appointments with Elle Macpherson and Sophie Dahl on a three month waiting list. The surroundings are impressive – Vaishaly herself may continue to practise in W1 but the more fickle amongst us will love the Four Seasons spa which is located in the penthouse and offers views of Hyde Park and the capital beyond. The treatment rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows and while you can choose to tuck in to the heated treatment beds, listen to classical music and cocoon yourself from the world below, you can also do what I did – shamelessly embrace the tourist within, throw the curtains open with abandon and enjoy the 360° view; but not before you’ve pottered around the spa facilities and enjoyed the sauna and vitality pool. Vaishaly’s signature facial begins with a deep cleanse using her
own range of natural products followed by extraction to relieve congestion in the skin. The next step is microdermabrasion which isn’t as wince-worthy as strangers to mechanical exfoliation might assume. It’s gentle (you’ll feel something akin to a vibration) and the process skilfully buffs away dead skin cells to enhance radiance, only once the necessary areas have been identified under a bright light. A high frequency tool is then swiped over the skin to close pores and kill bacteria – a method which is fantastic for those with oily complexions. But then the real fun starts. Vaishaly’s facial massage technique works on the principle that it is mental stress that shows in our skin and ages us. Therefore clients can expect systematic relaxing touch which completely soothes mind and body and induces a meditative state. Visibly, your skin will look brighter, plumper and more even, but the real difference is in how you feel, which sounds like hyperbole – until you try it. Tension in the face completely disappears. The final part of the signature facial is application of a treatment mask which is tailored to skin type to soften and condition. I was asked for days afterwards whether I’d ‘done something different with [my] make-up’. The Vaishaly hype is completely justified. n www.fourseasons.com/london www.vaishaly.com

Perfect for the rather changeable weather we’re experiencing this summer, the Wild Berry Fruit Tea from Lov Organic makes not only a comforting hot drink, but can also be served as a cooling jug of ice tea. To make this divine summer spritz, mix 15g of the tea with a couple of teaspoons of caster sugar and 500ml of nearly boiling water in a jug. Leave to brew for five minutes, add 15 or so ice cubes, then strain into a separate jug with additional ice cubes. You can even add a few sprigs of fresh mint or a tablespoon of freshly squeezed orange.

Beaufor t Chalet d’Alpage cheese This is my favourite cheese, and useful as an ingredient for a delicious omelette, in a salad with lardons, or simply grilled on sourdough bread, which has first had a brushing of white wine before the cheese is popped on top and grilled. As well as just nibbling on its own!
Bread I’m never without a loaf of Poilane bread or a crusty handmade baguette. It’s a staple that translates quickly into many different forms, from a simple sandwich or toasted croutons to dipping in egg and frying.

David Motion, owner of The Winery in Maida Vale, talks about how his job takes him to some of the most extraordinary places in the world
I
travel around beautiful wine regions drinking wine for a living. Or at least, that’s what it looks like. Customers frequently collar me at our shop and ask if they can come with me. I explain that, while it may sound idyllic, the reality is much tougher. For example, tasting twenty unfinished wines from the barrel at 9am on a Monday morning in January, in a freezing cold cellar in Burgundy, after a long drive and a bit too much to eat and drink the night before, takes a special kind of dedication! And yet, despite the inevitable punishment to the body, there are some advantages, not least being that we can fill our shop with wines that we love to drink. Here are some of my current recommendations. Champagne Amyot NV (Champagne/France) £19.99 In the bottom right hand corner of the vast region of Champagne and halfway to Dijon, you find The Aube. Off the beaten track, the tiny village of Loches-sur-Ource is the very rural home of Champagne Amyot. The champagne is the biggest selling item in The Winery, always powerful, biscuity and explosive. Riesling trocken 2010, Fred Prinz (Rheingau/Germany) £12.99 I am an evangelist for New Wave dry Riesling from Germany. The fresh, zingy, dry styles are almost unknown in the UK but, once tried, they become a fascination. In contrast to the wine made in historic castles and convents on the south-facing slope west of Frankfurt that is the Rheingau, Fred Prinz made his wine in the garage of the flats where he and his family live. Having started as a hobby, demand was so great he had to give up his day job. Spätburgunder “Ruber” 2009, Thomas Nelles (Ahr Valley/ Germany) £17.99 Pinot Noir from Germany? Everyone is surprised to hear that Germany is the third biggest producer of Pinot in the world. With shock wins in wine competitions everywhere, people are falling in love with its distinctive autumnal flavours and its silky mouthfeel. Supple and velvety, “Ruber” is bursting with layers of smoke, autumn leaves and forest fruit. Roccamora 2008, Schola Sarmenti (Puglia/Italy) £12.99 We had a Godfather moment when sniffing out new wines in Puglia a few summers ago. Men in black, following a black car along remote country roads – we experienced it all. Puglia’s hot southernmost corner is known for its big juicy reds. This is a lush blend of Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera di Lecce - traditional Puglian varieties evoking the southern sun-baked land. Rich and earthy. n The Winery 4 Clifton Road, W9 1SS www.thewineryuk.com

The
Reformation The newly renamed and redecorated Reform Social and Grill at The Mandeville Hotel has breathed new life into the site of the old deVille restaurant, says Emma Johnson
Y
ears ago I stayed at The Mandeville, a chic boutique hotel with a unique design. We dined at the deVille restaurant (as it was called then) and at the time thought the fairly wacky decor – which owed its inspiration to fleur de lis and the playboy-inspired classic combo of pink and black – was dramatic and unique. And it was. But as tastes change and times of economic austerity mean trends have moved to a more pared down, simplistic approach centered around quality and heritage, it has recently started to seem a bit passé. So, time for an overhaul. And what an overhaul. Out are the girly swirls, mirrors, glass panels, box stools in the bar and little rows of cocktails shots. In are wooden floors, leather armchairs, solid oak tables, dark, brooding colours and big, hearty glasses of wine. And it’s the same story in the restaurant – a long thin space, with leather booth seating, marble tables, big chairs and generous spacing.
d i a ry
While it looks a little more pared down, in reality the effect is warm and welcoming and not at all affected. The removal of a few walls and its own private entrance makes the place comfortable and relaxed. Drinks in the bar include solid classics such as gin and tonics and bellinis, as well as robust, rich wines. The menu reflects the surroundings too – classic and British – think soups, pates, terrines, fish pie, steaks and chips. Our starters of chicken broth and pheasant scotch egg were really delicious, both well-cooked and showing a loyalty to provenance and history. For main course my date had rib-eye on the bone, which was excellently cooked, as rare as rare can be. (And considering he wanted the hangar steak and snails, which sadly they’d run out of, it was doubly impressive). My sophisticated fish pie came with scallops, which was a real bonus, and it was rich and tasty. Service was kind and friendly, (if a little confused, but they’d only been open three days and I’ll forgive them that). The wine list was interesting, not too much at the top end of the spectrum but enough interesting selections in the middle to give us lots of choice. The food at Reform is well-cooked, honest and delicious and there’s a real sense of longevity about this place already. The bar, equally, makes a good place for a pre-dinner drink or a cocktail – and I think we can safely say that it’s a great addition to Marylebone. n www.reformsocialgrill.co.uk

THE GREENHOUSE
T
ell someone you went out for dinner on Friday and they’ll ask all kinds of questions; the date, the wine, the post-dinner venue; talk of supper on a Monday and the statement is never quite met with the same enthusiasm. That is, until you say you went to The Greenhouse, the Michelin-starred restaurant in Mayfair. Dining with friends here becomes an event, but very much of the candlelight and discretion kind. The restaurant is tucked away amidst mews houses and fronted by a landscaped garden, the atmosphere is calm and the service is faultless and attentive – we seemed to float from one course to the next. Arnaud Bignon became head chef this spring and brought with him the finesse and flavour of his experience at the acclaimed Le Bistro in Paris and Spondi in Athens, where he was one of the youngest chefs ever to receive two Michelin stars. The food is, of course, brilliant. We enjoyed amuse bouches with champagne, before highland scallops with tandoori masala and lemon confit and a delicate salmon array. Opting for Challans duck with beetroot, onion and Chioggia beets, and pork
belly and trotters with molasses and purple mustard for our mains, the beauty was in the detail – from perfect seasoning to the smoothest swirls of mashed potato. But delicious cuisine aside, The Greenhouse also deserves its reputation for its extensive and high quality wine menu which has won the Wine Spectator’s Grand Award every year since 2005. There are bottles available here that are rarely seen at auctions, but also some more affordable yet original inclusions amongst over three thousand possible choices, each selected under the guidance of renowned sommelier Marc Piquet. And if you are a wine-and-cheese kind of person, there’s a trolley stacked with great pyramids of British and French varieties which guests are invited to enjoy before dessert – an indulgent course including fresh raspberries and light cheesecake foam. We cannot recommend The Greenhouse highly enough. n www.greenhouserestaurant.co.uk

TRAVEL in style HOT SPOT JULY: Malta Why: Malta is a relatively unspoilt by tourism and still retains a lot of classic charm. Late June and July offer the best temperatures in Malta, when the weather is hot and crisp, and even in this changeable climate you are most likely guaranteed sunshine every day. Where: The capital Valleta is lovely, an ancient coastal city and UNESCO heritage site, bursting with baroque and neoclassical architecture, while the coastal spots of Mellieha Bay at Ghadire and the more remote Golden Bay provide the best of the sandy beaches Malta has to offer. For the more historic adventurer, Mdina, the medieval capital of Malta, offers a step back in time with narrow, winding streets, beautiful squares and wonderful views. You can also get easily from here to Rabat, the adjoining town, home to several fascinating catacombs. In addition, Gozo, the second largest island in Malta provides a more sedate, rustic way of life and a real chance to escape the world for a few days. Eat & Drink: Food takes its inspiration from Italy, and delights in its south-Mediterranean roots, as well as those of the many invaders who have set foot here over the years, making for an eclectic style of cooking. e were met with a garland of sweet-scented frangipani, a tilak – a red dot on the forehead signifying welcome – and a gracious bow. The Leela Palace New Delhi really puts the Sanskrit saying ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ – the guest is our god – into practice and we were instantly made to feel special. Set in the leafy diplomatic enclave, its lavish interiors – wooden furniture inlaid with mother-of-pearl, sumptuous fabrics, Turkish carpets, Murano-glass chandeliers – and beautiful gardens have been complemented by a stunning collection of modern art, as well as the finest of India’s artisanal crafts. That afternoon, we set out to explore Old Delhi, a sensory overload of sights, sounds and smells. The impressive Red Fort, made from sandstone, is where the Mughal Emperors held court in the Hall of Public Audience on a marble throne inlaid with lapis and other precious stones. At the spice bazaar, colourful pyramids of cardamom, cumin, turmeric and cinnamon scented the air. But to get to the heart of the old city, we took a bicycle rickshaw ride around the narrow streets of the Chandri Chowk market, where silks and saris sit next to glittering jewellery, car engines next to butchers. Our driver weaved expertly through the traffic as cars, auto-rickshaws piled high with boxes, mopeds carrying entire families and even sacred cows journeyed amidst a cacophony of honking horns. A swim in Leela’s rooftop infinity pool was the perfect way to unwind after running the gauntlet of traffic. From the eleventh floor we had panoramic views over the whole city, including its patchwork of green spaces and the Government buildings designed by British architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens. Later, I tried the signature cocktail, an inventive mix of vodka, honey and fresh pineapple, infused with cigar smoke. You can dine at Le Cirque, the only outpost of this legendary French restaurant outside New York, but after a cookery class with Indian chef, Vinod Saini, who showed us the artistry and spices behind some traditional recipes, that evening we wanted to sample more of his delicious dishes at Jamavar. We continued our tour of Rajasthan in Udaipur, known as

the Venice of the East, where the Leela sits in an unrivalled position overlooking Lake Pichola, the most beautiful of the city’s three lakes. We arrived by small boat, and as we walked to the entrance, a local man sheltered us from the sun with a velvet parasol and we were showered with rose petals as we crossed the threshold. Our bedroom was opulent and through the floor-to-ceiling window was a magical view of the stunning sapphire-blue lake. We took an idyllic late-afternoon boat trip as the setting sun played on the marble walls of the grand buildings lining the lake and turned the hills pink, orange and purple by turn. The area is steeped in fascinating history and the guides are full of information, more than just facts and figures, but fascinating stories about the region. We glided past Jagmandir, a lake palace that was once the pleasure island of the Maharaja’s son and home to the royal concubines, while men fished alongside herons as they’ve done for centuries. Back at the hotel we tried to decide where to have our supper. (Food at the Leela was so delicious, I began each day with a yoga class on the terrace beside a grove of ancient guava trees, before a refreshing swim in the large pool to offset the gastronomic delights on offer!) That
t r av e l
evening we settled on drinks in the colonial-style Library Bar before eating in the Dining Room, the hotel’s signature restaurant, a wonderful fusion of fine-dining and exemplary service. The following day we drove into the countryside, through sleepy villages which gave us a kaleidoscope of rural life. Women in red, yellow, orange and pink saris, vivid against the dusty landscape were carrying anything and everything on their heads from firewood to gourds of water and bushels of wheat, oxen were grinding corn, a line of immaculately dressed schoolchildren wandered along, wedding arches decorated with multi-coloured tinsel and there was a bride on her way to a wedding, giggling and singing, gold jewellery glinting in the soft sunlight. We were headed for the magnificent 15th-century Kumbhalgarh Fort and the Jain Temples of Ranakpur, one of the five holiest Jain shrines in India. The two buildings were dramatically different. The fort, with a commanding position at the top of a mountain pass, was enormous yet its sand-coloured buildings blended into the landscape. There are 362 temples and numerous villages housed within its walls – the longest after the Great Wall of China – so it was possible to ride four abreast along them to the elephant-feet shaped lookouts to spot enemies and pelt them with rocks and boiling oil before they knew it. In contrast, the temple from the same period sits at the foot of a wooded valley. Its architecture is delicate, with over a thousand carved marble pillars, no two the same, and it took around 3,000 workers over 50 years to complete. Udaipur’s magnificent City Palace is only a short walk from the Leela. Home to generations of maharanas, it was built in the late 16th century and wandering around its ornate courtyards you can still find the exquisite miniature paintings that the city is famous for, painted with the hair from a squirrel’s tail. We found excellent copies of the paintings at Mayur Arts, where
you can watch the artisans in action as you explore its rooms stuffed with antique furniture and objet d‘art. Shopping in Udaipur was a delight, from the Ganesh Handicraft Emporium, where we sifted through the hundreds of kaftans while the owners proudly showed us photos of Judi Dench and Celia Imrie, who filmed the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in the city, to Andraab – designer Sarah Burton is a fan – where the exquisite hand-embroidered shawls woven from the finest wool from a Kashmir goat can Images of The Leela Palace Udaipur (from top): take up to four years to complete. Alfresco seating outside Grand Ballroom After this we headed back Arrival by Boat to the hotel and I indulged in a Sights of Udaipur pampering session at the spa, where an Ayurvedic massage with a fusion of essential oils relaxed both mind and body. Feeling thoroughly zen it was time to enjoy our final evening in India. We dined at Sheesh Mahal, a gorgeous traitional rooftop restaurant on the lake side. Dining under the stars on a balmy evening, accompanied by live Indian music was a delight. Suddenly a blaze of fireworks lit up the lake, as though it had been arranged just for us. Mark Twain once said: “India (is) the most extraordinary country that the sun visits on his rounds.” He’d obviously been to Rajasthan. n

sublime Sicily With an impressive location perched on a rocky promontory along the cliffs of Mount Tauro, and spectacular views of Mount Etna and the Ionian coast, Taormina makes the perfect introduction to Sicily, says Sarah Gilbert
T
aormina is literally Sicily’s history in a microcosm, invaded by the Greeks, Romans, French and Spanish, among others, who all left their mark. Socialites, artists, writers and celebrities – including Elizabeth Taylor, Cary Grant, and Sophia Loren soon followed, drawn by its Greco-Roman amphitheatre, medieval charm and network of winding streets filled with chi-chi shops, restaurants and bars. We checked into the beautiful Grand Hotel Timeo, Taormina’s first hotel, which is idyllically set under the amphitheatre, with stunning views over the rugged coastline. In the distance you can also see the perfect cone shape of one of Europe’s largest and most active volcanoes, and our first stop on an island excursion, Mount Etna. As we drove up the winding road, we emerged above a layer of mist and suddenly the distant smoking summit was revealed. We hiked along an ancient shepherd’s trail among the lunar landscape and seven craters of the Sartorius Mounts, under a seemingly endless blue sky, stopping off in a sleepy village on our way back for a refreshing almond-milk granita.
94
Back at the hotel, the cool interiors were a respite from the heat. Exuding a timeless elegance, the hotel has recently been refurbished, a huge task, which saw a specialised team working to combine traditional craftsmanship with modernity to create an opulent Italian Baroque style. Its exquisite landscaped garden tumbles down a hillside towards the sea, filled with vibrant red geraniums, pink bougainvillea and banks of white roses, flanked by towering cypress and pine trees. We had lunch at the al fresco restaurant, Il Giardino di Baco, and feasted on salads, seafood and brick-oven pizza drizzled with olive oil, washed down with a glass of chilled white wine. Afterwards, we flopped under parasols next to the Hockney-blue swimming pool and fell into the sweetest slumber. As evening approached we went back to our spacious suite to change for dinner, and flung open the French windows leading on to our seafacing balcony to let the scent of pine and flowers drift in. With an elegant living area, richly textured fabrics, parquet floors and a marshmallow-soft

Need to know The Taormina Arte Festival of Music, Dance and Opera takes place in July and August every year in the atmospheric amphitheatre. This year’s highlights include a performance of The Barber of Seville directed by Woody Allen and Sting in concert. You can tour the sights in an iconic vintage Fiat 500. Choose from Etna’s wine road, follow in the footsteps of Andrea Camilleri’s fictional Sicilian detective, Inspector Montalbano, or take The Godfather tour while enjoying incredible island panoramas. bed bedecked in crisp white linens, it was difficult to leave. We headed to the Literary Terrace for stunning views of Etna’s smoke plume and aperitivi served with plump olives, salted almonds and amuse bouche. The fine dining restaurant, Il Dito e La Luna, has floor-to-ceiling windows, but the evening was balmy and we chose to dine outside serenaded by operatic classics from a spine-chillingly good tenor. The dishes are classically Sicilian with a Mediterranean twist and a focus on seasonal ingredients, such as a contemporary take on Pasta alla’ Norma – aubergine, tomato and salted ricotta – and turbot with a sauce of Sicilian black bees honey. The wine list is equally loyal, and the sommelier chose the best regional wines to complement each course. Later, we happily toasted Sicily with a superb Grappa, while marvelling at a rare performance of Etna’s lava pyrotechnics. n Grand Hotel Timeo is an Orient-Express hotel, www.grandhoteltimeo.com

Come Fly with Me Respiratory physiologist, Damian Muncaster, asks are you fit to fly this summer?
A
s summer approaches and thoughts turn to foreign holidays, a crucial element of the holiday is organising the flight. Reserving seats, ordering meals and online check-ins are now routine considerations, as flying becomes an ever more popular mode of transport. It is estimated that in 2011 over one billion people travelled by air and over the next 20 years that figure is expected to double. With this increase in air travel, and an increasingly ageing population, there will be a significant rise in the number of older passengers, and those with illness who wish to travel. The physiology of flying, and its impact on a patient’s underlying illness, is important in assessing whether a patient is fit to fly. Modern aircraft fly with a cabin altitude between 5000 and 8000ft. This results in a drop in barometric pressure and an associated decrease in the partial pressure of alveolar oxygen, i.e. oxygen levels in the blood fall. This drop in oxygen saturation is welltolerated by healthy travellers, but for those with underlying cardiac or pulmonary conditions or anaemia, there could be a problem. Most cardiac conditions can tolerate air travel well, although individual assessment is recommended, but certain respiratory conditions require more detailed investigation. The majority of patients with lung disease who will experience in-flight hypoxia can fly safely with supplemental oxygen, but it’s important that this is assessed first. For conditions such as COPD, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis,
pulmonary fibrosis and any other condition that produces hypoxia at sea level, it is recommended that the patient should undergo a hypoxic inhalation test (HIT). We regularly perform the hypoxic inhalation test here at the Lung Function Laboratory at The Wellington Hospital. It is a relatively simple test that requires firstly taking an earlobe blood gas sample from the patient to assess the baseline oxygen levels. The patient then breathes in a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen that simulates the cabin environment. Oxygen saturation is monitored and a further ear lobe sample is taken to assess the amount of de-saturation. If the oxygen saturation drops to a certain level, then supplemental oxygen is administered until the de-saturation is rectified. If in-flight oxygen is required most airlines will provide this, although some do charge a fee for the privilege. Of course respiratory conditions are not the only possible barrier to flying. DVT, recent surgery, haematological conditions, psychiatric issues, infection and the recent application of a plaster cast can all become an obstacle to flying. But in the majority of cases as long as the cabin crew are aware of the condition, they have clear advice from the relevant physician, and any medication which is being taken - the flight should be comfortable and emergency free. If you believe that you may have a problem during your flight, or wish to undergo a hypoxic inhalation test, please contact the Enquiry Helpline team on 020 7483 5002 and arrange an appointment.

T
here’s a line from an old song by The Who that goes “…Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.” It regularly gets wheeled out when motoring hacks talk about the latest iteration of the Porsche 911. No doubt it’ll happen with the latest 911, but this would be plain wrong. Yes, it’s the new boss but, silhouette aside, it’s a long way from being the same as the old one. Car makers often refer to their latest model as the ‘all-new…’ when little more than a badge has changed. However, despite looking like, well, every 911 since the line began in 1963, the new model really is all new. It’s longer for starters, with an extra 100mm in the wheelbase and a little extra room inside the cabin though, as ever, the rear seats are best used as extra storage rather than for seating. It has a wider front track and new front and rear end styling, while real fans will also spot the steeper rake of the windscreen. Despite the car being bigger it’s considerably lighter than before. Extensive use of aluminium in the frame means the basic body is 80kg lighter, though with extra kit as standard the overall weight loss is around 40 kilograms. And, yes, the new 911 is stiffer, stronger and safer as well as being more powerful, yet more economical. But does that translate into better on the road? You better believe it does. On offer in the UK are the Carrera, the more powerful Carrera S, a four-wheel drive Carrera 4, and Turbo. To get to Thruxton, one of the fastest circuits in the UK, I use the manual Carrera Coupé, and on an extended loop over various sinuous roads near the circuit, I try out a Carrera Coupé S with the PDK dual clutch semiautomatic transmission. PDK ‘S’ cars in both open and closed forms are used on the track, while for the run home I transfer to a Coupé S with the manual box. That’s the lot covered and they are all extraordinarily good. Standard road cars on race circuits are usually a huge compromise: they are invariably too soft to attack the track seriously while the brakes tend to run out of ability too quickly (at about the same time as the amateur driver’s ability goes out of the window). But not this 911. OK, we weren’t driving at full out race pace, but it was plenty quick enough and the new Porsche just got on with flattering my attempts to emulate a professional. Breathtaking acceleration was matched by confident stopping power, while the handling was awesome.
On the road, where most 911s will spend their lives – despite the availability of the Sports Chrono pack with a dash-mounted stopwatch and a racing start programme – Porsche’s finest is difficult to fault. Ample, instantly accessible power, coupled to a chassis fine-tuned to provide unflappable handling with a remarkably resilient ride, make every trip in the new 911 an event. Even the steering, now featuring electro-mechanical power assistance – usually a disaster for those seeking accurate feedback from the wheel – is better than ever. Even so, of the four versions currently available there’s one, for me at any rate, that’s out front. It’s a Coupé rather than the Convertible – an open car at speed involves too much noise and wind buffeting – and it’s got to be the S. While the 350hp of the ‘ordinary’ Carrera is probably sufficient for most needs, when there’s another 50hp on offer, you just would, wouldn’t you? The 3.8-litre six-cylinder ‘boxer’ engine in the S has 15 more horses than before, taking its tally to a nice round 400. To complete my perfect Porsche, I’d specify the PDK transmission, even if it adds £2,387 to the price. When making a choice, there are many reasons why the PDK is the one to have. Gear shifts – whether the ‘box is left to its own devices or when performed by the driver – are quicker than the manual and deliver better performance against the clock. The PDK is more economical too; just make sure you go for the optional paddle shifts that sit behind the steering wheel; the standard shifters are little buttons on the wheel itself and too easy to press by mistake. While you’re ticking the options boxes, add PDCC (Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control), an electronically controlled box of tricks, which takes an already formidable chassis and simply makes it better. Pitch and roll are all but eliminated and the system works with the new electric power steering to provide greater precision and feedback. You also won’t regret getting the sports exhaust: the sound is awesome, especially when you floor it in a tunnel. That little lot will take the price to around £88,000 which, frankly, is very little to pay for a machine with this ability. You always could use a 911 every day, but the new one makes an even more compelling case for itself. It’s more refined, yet more fun. Little wonder, perhaps, that’s it’s just been voted World Performance Car of the Year. Time for Ferrari, Aston et al to meet the new boss, better than the old boss. n

state of the market
Marc Schneiderman, director of Arlington Residential, talks about the most recent developments in the residential sales market Central and North West London remain a market place dominated by purchasers from abroad. In the last few years we have concluded transactions with buyers of over 20 different nationalities – representing in excess of 60 per cent of the overall business we transacted. We truly are working on an international stage. There is nothing new in reporting that London is possibly the most coveted property owning destination in the world. As a result of this the consistency of our market is at the mercy of foreign investment and, should London lose its appeal as one of the top three financial centres globally, everything could change. The March budget, which introduced 15 per cent tax on residential property over £2m purchased by corporations, has already altered the property landscape. The immediate aftermath was the rethink by many overseas buyers who chose to purchase in what was previously a highly tax
142
efficient structure of not owning homes personally, but in the names of companies – of which they were ultimately the beneficial owners. From experience, the increases in stamp duty, which currently stands at seven per cent for homes over £2m, other than purchases by a company, is readily absorbed and, while a meaningful percentage, it is within a short period of time just accepted as an additional expense when calculating how much the purchase will cost overall. My view of the 15 per cent tax is entirely different. It is perceived as a massive financial penalty. As the very top end of the residential market is fuelled by buyers from abroad it has already caused some ripples However, I would suggest that the detriment to the volume of top end transactions will in time be manageable, with buyers having to either accept the change in their chosen vehicle of ownership or simply be prepared to pay 15 per cent on top the sale price, allowing them ownership anonymity and other tax advantages. Since March we have successfully introduced several companies to properties over £2m resulting in the 15 per cent Stamp Duty Land Tax being paid. For those purchasers, the allure of owning a home in London is strong. n Arlington Residential 8 Wellington Road, St. John’s Wood, NW8 9SP www.arlingtonresidential.com
