HIDDEN GEMS Coming upon a shop filled with wonders that few have heard of is a little like finding a hidden gem. Claire Adler gets the inside story on four unique North West London emporiums
Clifton Nurseries, Clifton Villas, Little Venice, W9
Inspired by hip girls’ apartments and designed for escapism of the shopaholic kind, here you can sip gin and tonic cocktails from the 1930s-style bar, browse the library of vintage design books and romantic novels, take in the pop-up temporary gallery exhibits, or simply splash out on ultra-feminine and lacy lingerie, silk loungewear, Parisian perfumes, fashion books, or costume jewellery by the likes of Mawi and Fiona Paxton. Set in a black and gold backdrop of art deco and 1960s furniture, the interior of the store is as alluring as its stock. Check out the taxidermy light fittings, using pigeons as pendant lamps by award-winning designer Jericho Hands, and collectable furniture including 1960s Egg chairs. According to the shop’s website: “Apartment C is about hanging out in your knickers, drinking gin out of a teacup, and reading Last Tango in Paris out loud.” The approach seems to be working. Last year, Time Out named it a top five new boutique, while this past April, Vogue called Apartment C one of Britain’s top boutiques. www.apartment-c.com

Beautiful plant nurseries are the perfect hidden gems – they’re colourful, they lift the spirits and are ideal places for treating yourself or others. All the Clifton Café’s jams, chutneys and cakes are homemade in the Clifton Kitchen, for a start. But London’s oldest plant nursery has now opened the doors to its new Garden Room, an accessory and interiors emporium for home and garden. For more than 100 years, Clifton Nursery’s canal-side walled garden has inspired the gardens of London homes. Today it offers the capital’s largest choice of indoor,

t must have been one of those classic Homer Simpson ‘Doh’ moments. The stage had been set for the launch of not just a new car, but of an entire new marque – Infiniti. The luxury Japanese brand (it’s an arm of Nissan just as Lexus is to Toyota) had long been popular in America, but now was the time for the cars to be sold in Europe. And then global economic chaos set in. You can imagine the conversation around the boardroom table. “So, remind me again, we have a range of luxury cars powered by powerful but thirsty V6 and V8 petrol engines. And the two biggest are both four-wheel drives. “So that means our cars are expensive gas-guzzlers that pump out huge amounts of CO2… and we major on Chelsea Tractors that attract unwanted attention from the antis. “And we’re going to launch all this
just as a recession hits. D’oh!” Against that backdrop, Infiniti might have been forgiven if it had quietly dropped its plans for Europe and retreated back the US. But to its credit it continued and even made a virtue out of the recession, deciding that lower-than-anticipated sales made the marque even more exclusive. But Infiniti bosses also knew that their cars wouldn’t be out of tune with the market forever, though even they would admit the more socially acceptable diesel models couldn’t come quickly enough. It’s been worth the wait. There are diesel versions of the gargantuan FX 4x4 and the forthcoming M saloon, but the pick of the crop is the EX30d. EX is what Infiniti calls a compact crossover, part 4x4, part luxury coupé. But it’s the 30d bit that’s the most significant element here. It refers to the car’s 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine,
motoring calibre
developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance, and which goes some way to restoring the car’s environmental credentials. The combined mpg, for example, is 33mpg – rather better than the petrol’s 25mpg – while emissions improve to a better-but-still-notbrilliant 224g/km. The figures are good enough, though, to allow you to drive the Infiniti with a clear-ish conscience, and that’s all that really matters. But the best news is that the new diesel engine is really rather good. Infiniti’s 3.7-litre V6 petrol is a hard act to follow: it’s creamy smooth, wonderfully powerful and makes a superb noise. The diesel’s deep bass rumble on start-up instantly lets you know it’s an oil burner, but once on the move you’d be hard pushed to tell it’s not a petrol by listening alone. Infiniti is all about refinement, and the fact that there’s a diesel under the bonnet just means the engineers have worked a little harder to ensure its air of sophistication remains. Better than that, though, the engine’s huge pulling power means that in everyday overtaking terms it’s probably quicker than the petrol. And you certainly won’t spend as much time at the filling station. The super-smooth 7-speed automatic box must take some of the credit here. Changes are instant and imperceptible and there’s a Sport mode to sharpen things up still further. Although it has four-wheel drive, in normal use the system has a rearward bias, meaning the EX feels quite sporting when being driven with verve. But when the going gets slippery, the intelligent system reads the conditions and immediately starts to equalise the torque between the wheels, so that grip and drive are where they are needed. In other respects, the diesel is identical to the petrol version. That means clever coupé-inspired looks (even if that means it’s not quite as spacious as you might think) and a seriously luxurious interior. High-quality leather is offset by a modern, black lacquer finish to the console, though classic maple wood is an option. And the top-of-the-range GT Premium model is absolutely loaded with seriously clever kit. On top of the usual stuff – the climate control, the touch screen satnav, the 2GB Music
Box where you can download your favourite CDs and not have to lug them about with you, and so on – the Premium has something called Lane Departure Prevention (LDP). So you’re driving down the motorway and your mind – and the car – starts to wander. As you stray over the white line, the system gives an audible and visible warning as, indeed, do many other similar systems. Where the Infiniti goes one better is that, should the driver ignore the warnings, it intercepts by gently applying the brakes to one side of the car to create a yaw effect that brings the car back into line. To LDP you can add a series of other acronyms such as Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC), Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW). If you have a crash in the Infiniti, it’s clearly because you wanted one. But perhaps the cleverest bit of standard kit is the Around View Monitor (yes, you’ve got it: AVM). Imagine a parking camera mounted not just on the tailgate, but also on the radiator grille and within both side door mirrors. Merge all four feeds together and you have a remarkable bird’s-eye image that appears to come
from some 20 feet above the car. It allows inch-perfect parking everything, even in the tightest of gaps. But perhaps the thing that lifts EX30d – any Infiniti indeed – above the rest is what they call the Infiniti Total Ownership Experience. The showrooms are a mix of boutique hotel and nightclub cool. Owners are treated like individuals – VIP individuals, that is – and Infiniti reckons the aftercare is second to none. And now Londoners now have a chance to experience it first-hand with the recent opening of the capital’s Infiniti Centre in Piccadilly. Even Homer Simpson would be treated with due reverence. n

October
We kick off this spook-tacular issue by speaking to Hampstead resident and saviour of the New End Theatre, Brian Daniels (p.8) about his change of direction from head hunter to theatre director, with a little help from Band of Gold scriptwriter Kay Mellor. It just goes to show, it is never too late to follow your heart and your dreams. Staying in the locale we visit some of the area’s hidden gems and shopping treasure troves, perfect on the run up to Christmas, whether it’s a slinky number from Apartment C, something for the home or garden from Clifton Nurseries or Somerville Scott or sweet treats from Paul A Young (p.12). After last month’s fabulous men in their flying machines, fashion goes all flirty and feminine this month with some great ideas to wow all the other guests at those imminent Christmas parties (p.20). And golfing fashionista, Ian Poulter speaks to us about his extravagant style and sportspeople as businesses, hoping that he doesn’t get to 50 and wander what he should be doing next (p.46). Our interiors pages take inspiration from native America with earthy tones and textiles (p.28), our health and beauty experts at The Wellington
Hospital advise us on dangers of high street plastic surgery (p.37), and our motoring guru Matthew Carter goes to Infiniti and beyond with the new diesel compact crossover from the luxury Japanese marque (p.40). As the nights draw in we round up some of the top holiday hot spots for the season; from finding the best snow and preparing yourself to ensure that you make the most of it (p.58) to California girls relaxing in the Ojai Valley and living it up in Beverley Hills (p.54) not forgetting we’ve brought you five of the best cheeky weekend breaks away to the country just for two (p.54). October is the month of ghosts and ghouls and we haven’t forgotten this All-Hallows-Even, bringing you our tricks and treats for half-term week (p.50). Wishing you more treats than tricks this October.

t is a theatrical miracle that after 36 years, the mortuary of the former New End Hospital in Hampstead is still a much-loved and well-known theatre, regularly entertaining the residents of North West London and managing to avoid the clutches of property developers. The success of the theatre isn’t down to help from the Arts Council, the National Lottery or any subsidy from other government-run organisations, but instead is thanks to one man. Artistic director and chief executive Brian Daniels sank his private pension fund into the 84-seat venue 13 years ago, and ever since then has worked hard to keep it going. “It is a rollercoaster. To run a small theatre as a business is virtually impossible without funding. I thought it could be done, but it is increasingly difficult because to put on a theatre show is very labour intensive,” explains Brian, who was also chief executive of the Shaw Theatre in the West End. “People think that the expense is to do with the number of cast members, but the actors are not the highest cost – the cost of keeping the venue open and running and staffed is much greater than the production.” Reading over Brian’s CV, there is nothing in his background to suggest he would ever end up running his own theatre. Until his 40s, Brian had been chief executive of his own recruitment and headhunting consultancy company and, with no theatre training whatsoever, it was only a chance meeting with actress and director Kay Mellor that changed Brian’s direction. “I was asked by Kay Mellor if I wanted to produce a film that she had written and, at the time, I was running my own business and this opportunity just sounded more interesting. I realised after a while that I was more interested in the process of how plays worked, rather than films, as I have always been a theatregoer rather than a film-goer,” says Brian. “Perhaps it was a mid-life crisis, but I sold my business and started doing theatre producing, as well as writing my own plays.” As is often the case with New End offerings, many of the shows have strong Jewish themes – from Dan Clancy’s Holocaust play, Timekeepers, to the Jewish mother play Mother/Son by Jeffrey Solomon – to appeal to the large Jewish society in North West London. For Brian, the local Jewish community make up a large proportion of his regular audience. “Jewish themes are normally very popular, provided they are written well, because you can’t pull the wool over the eyes of a North West London audience; they are discerning and word of mouth is very strong,” says Brian, who clarifies that the New End doesn’t just cater for the Jewish community, but also bears in mind the eclectic mix of residents in the area. “For me, it is about putting on
good drama and actually Jewish people are great theatregoers; whether the play has a Jewish theme or not, they will go to the theatre. It’s the standard of the productions that is more important than if it has a Jewish theme.” For Brian, his job is one that keeps him on his creative toes, coming up with funding ideas, making the all important decisions about which plays he wants to bring to life on the tiny stage, and discovering new play writers. Names such as Dame Judi Dench, Jerry Hall, Stephen Berkoff and Stephen Fry are just a few who have walked the New End boards and only this week, Brian explains he took a phone call which expressed Ricky Gervais’ interest in working at the New End Theatre. “Every day is completely different and I think that is what I love about it. It is unpredictable because the phone rings and you don’t know who it is or what they have to offer,” smiles Brian. It is obvious to see that Brian has invested, both financially and emotionally, all of himself into the theatre. It is a theatre that is very sacred to the local residents and offers something of a unique atmosphere that larger theatres would struggle to match. “The thing about the New End is that it is completely independent as a venue, and when people come in it’s as though they are coming into my front room. I have a very personal approach and I get to know a lot of our customers and patrons,” explains Brian with obvious satisfaction. “The New End Theatre is such a valuable brand that I will never let go of it. For me, I don’t think you can ever lose sight of who you are doing it for; you’re not doing it for yourself, you are doing it for the community.” n For further information, visit www.offwestendtheatres.co.uk

Fired Earth Fired Earth has announced a major paint launch in collaboration with the National Trust, inspired by the UK’s historic houses and gardens of yesteryear. There are 36 shades to the new water-based palette derived from archive collections and the most unusual of places. One colour, Cooks Cream, was picked from the inside of a cupboard at Upton House in Warwickshire with another, Strangford drawing inspiration from the evening light over the waters of Strangford Lough in County Down, Northern Ireland. This beautiful collection of romantic origins is also ethically and environmentally sound, and is available in a Hardwearing Emulsion or Acrylic Eggshell, depending on your space. The company will be extending the National Trust collection this season with a new launch of National Trust tiles, so watch this space! 0845 366 0400; www.firedearth.com

A TRUE REVOLUTION Every now and then a ‘vital’ new kitchen appliance comes along which changes the face of cooking. Trend-setters buy it, their friends see it and immediately want one, kitchen designers and chefs recommend it, newspapers and magazines review it and eventually it becomes a ‘must have’ in every kitchen. The Quooker boiling water tap is one of those rare ‘must haves’. This simple, safe idea immediately renders kettles out of date and takes kitchens a giant leap forward. Although it’s new to the UK, over 100,000 kitchens in Europe already depend on their Quookers for instant boiling water. And the applications are endless. Quooker users still come up with new ones. The most obvious one is making a cup of tea and the latest addition to the list is poaching fish. Of course you can also fill up a pasta pan, blanch vegetables, heat up plates and serving platters, make coffee, prepare baby formula, peel tomatoes, remove candle wax and much more. All done in a moment and with boiling water of 100°C! After all, only truly boiling water is good enough for the perfect cup of English tea.
Make your donation to a very special cause this month with a stylish slick of paint from the Little Greene paint company. 1L Acrylic Matt Emulsion, £13.50 This year, over Breast Cancer Awareness Month, 15p from the sale of every specially labelled can of paint sold either online or through UK stockists will be given to the cause. This year, however, customers are very much in the driving seat, being able to vote for their preferred charity online, using a special landing page on the Little Greene website. At the end of the month, the money generated will be calculated and then shared out proportionately, according to the online voting. Be sure to show your support. www.thelittlegreene.com/charity

news Nature’s Finest
This month, Bamford launches its first ever skincare range, the Bamford Body Collection. Putting into practice founder Carole Bamford’s belief that what goes on the body should be given as much consideration as what we put inside it, the collection is made from pure and organic ingredients that have passed the stringent tests of the Soil Association. The range includes hair, body and hand care as well as scented candles and soaps. The pebble soaps are moulded from a heart-shaped pebble found on the beach by Carole Bamford, giving them a wonderfully unique shape, and are hard-milled, making them really dense and long lasting. Each product is scented with beautiful fresh and delicate aromas from the British countryside, such as rose, lemon and chamomile and comes in sleek, simple and stylish packaging.
An exclusive new launch for luxury skincare brand Temple Spa, Skin Truffle was been formulated by experts in Switzerland, taking five years to perfect this revolutionary new product. Made with almost every luxury ingredient imaginable, including black truffle, pure gold, silk, champagne, chocolate, strawberries and even diamond particles, creating a feelgood factor that will literally make your skin glow. The endorphin-packed product contains so many mood-boosting properties that it will not only make your skin instantly radiant and provide long-term anti-ageing benefits, but will also make you feel as good as you look. treatment of the month: Acoustic Wave Therapy
There are few women who aren’t affected by the dreaded orange peel, aka cellulite. Now however, there seems to be hope. Known as the Acoustic Wave Therapy System from Demilec, this treatment utilises acoustic wave therapy to target those stubborn dimples - and Madonna seems to agree, having reportedly paid £50,000 to have one installed in her home. So, if it’s good enough for Madonna then it’s good enough for us mere mortals. Acoustic waves have been used in medicine
since 1980 for the disintegration of kidney stones and for the treatment of tendon and muscle disorders with great success. The device works by blasting problem areas with compressed air, creating rapid pulsations on the surface, while sending pressure waves to the underlying skin where cellulite develops. The force shatters and destroys the cellulite-causing fibres, releasing clogged fat, water and toxins. The results are smoother, rejuvenated skin, reduced circumference of the affected body regions and it helps to accelerate the lymphatic flow in desired area, stimulating the breakdown of fat. Patients are recommended a course of 8-10 treatments, although results can be seen after just one session. With a variety of salons offering Acoustic Wave Therapy around London, Pulsed Medical Solutions in North West London is one of the many trained practices that will help you rid you of that pesky cellulite. A PAIN IN THE LOIN Mr Leye Ajayi, consultant Urologist at The Wellington Hospital presents the lowdown on the common problem of kidney stones
During the heat of the summer, some of you might have experienced your first episode of kidney stones pain. The pain associated with kidney stones is the most painful of urinary tract disorders, which has beset humans for centuries. In fact, scientists have found evidence of kidney stones in a 7,000-year-old Egyptian mummy. Kidney stones are one of the most common disorders of the urinary tract. The number of people in the UK with kidney stones has been increasing over the past 30 years. In the late 1970s, fewer than four per cent of the population had stoneforming disease, but this figure stands at six per cent currently. A kidney stone is a hard mass developed from crystals that separate from the urine within the urinary tract. Normally, urine contains chemicals that prevent the crystals from forming, but this does not work for everyone. If the crystals remain tiny enough, they will travel through the urinary tract and pass out of the body in the urine without being noticed. However, if an individual becomes dehydrated and the urine becomes concentrated, the crystals in the urine aggregate and form a stone.
The first symptom of a kidney stone is extreme pain, which begins suddenly when a stone moves in the urinary tract and blocks the flow of urine. Typically, a person feels a sharp, excruciating pain in the lower back or groin area; this is called renal colic. Patients may also notice blood in their urine, feel a sudden urge to urinate or have discomfort while passing urine. The pain can be so severe that it causes vomiting, fever and/or sweats. Kidney stones may contain various combinations of chemicals. The most common type contains calcium in combination with either oxalate or phosphate, chemicals which are part of a normal diet and make up important parts of body, such as bones and muscles. A less common type is caused by infection in the urinary tract; this is called a struvite or triple phosphate stone as it is made up of magnesium, ammonium and phosphate. Most kidney stones pass out of the body without any intervention by a professional urologist. However, if the stone is large enough to cause an obstruction to the passage of urine or should the stone cause an infection in the urinary tract, it may cause irreversible kidney damage resulting in renal failure. It is therefore essential to seek a consultation. Until around 20 years ago, open surgery was necessary to remove a stone with a recovery time of four to six weeks. However, recent technological advances allow most treatment to be performed with only a few hours visit into hospital. There are three different treatments: • Lithotripsy is a non-invasive treatment that externally applies a focused, high-intensity acoustic pulse (shock wave), which passes
through the body. When the wave encounters the calculus, the pressure causes the stone to be stressed and fractured into small fragments that can pass through the urinary tract.
• Ureteroscopy is a minimally invasive treatment, which facilitates endoscopic examination of the upper urinary tract. It involves the passage of a small diameter endoscope through the natural corridors of the urinary tract to the level where the stone is located. The stone is vaporised with the aid of a Holmium Laser. • Keyhole surgery called Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is reserved for large stones in the kidney. This involves direct inspection of the interior of the kidney via a 1cm hole over the kidney containing the stone. The most important lifestyle change to prevent stones is to drink more water. A person who tends to form stones should drink enough liquids throughout the day to produce at least 2 litres of urine every 24 hours. Recent studies have also shown that foods high in calcium may help prevent calcium stones. Patients with a previous history of kidney stones are advised to reduce their intake of oxalate (e.g. chocolate, rhubarb, red wine, cheese, peanuts and spinach). At The Wellington Hospital we are able to offer a rapid access, sameday investigation and treatment for our patients with kidney stones using state-of-the-art technology. is characterised by obstruction to airflow and is normally episodic. It often runs in families, and is frequently (but not always) associated with a history of allergy. The resultant bronchial inflammation is usually reversible. Patients sometimes experience exacerbations and need to carry inhalers with them, as symptoms may be made worse by exercise or work. An important task for the respiratory physician is to determine whether someone’s asthma is occupational or constitutional. Pulmonary infections are common in all age groups. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is responsible for tuberculosis, also more commonly known as TB. The incidence of TB has fallen over the years, but there has been a recent rise in the number of cases in the UK. It most commonly affects the lungs, but can affect any organ. There have been advances in the diagnostic techniques and treatment of this condition.

DANGERS OF ‘HIGH-STREET’ COSMETIC SURGERY EXPOSED Numerous patients are emerging from expensive cosmetic surgeries with unsatisfactory results, health complications or traumatic experiences – so what should we look out for when shopping around for a plastic surgeon, asks Claire Saunders? In addition, The Wellington Plastics Unit is equipped with
Cosmetic surgery has been one of the few industries to have bucked the trend during the recent recession, growing by roughly a fifth in two years. However, recent statistics have revealed that up to 75 per cent of cosmetic surgery clinics are unregulated, potentially harming unknowing patients. The report, carried out by The National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD), an independent Whitehall-funded body which aims to improve medical care, showed that many companies offering cosmetic procedures such as face lifts, breast enlargement and liposuction, are not following basic safety guidelines. In fact, over half the companies approached breached the rules of the Care Quality Commission (CQC), by failing or refusing to fill in the questionnaire. “It’s been incredibly difficult to get information about the industry” said Ian Martin, a surgeon and one of the authors. “If we have difficulty finding who is doing what and where, then heaven help patients trying to find out what these facilities are like.” NCEPOD found that numerous cosmetic surgery clinics in the UK offered a large ‘menu’ of procedures (from nose jobs to liposuction) but in many cases the surgeons were not sufficiently experienced in all the surgeries on offer. “These figures present a distressing picture, but one which is sadly not surprising to us as they only confirm what we have been saying for years – that there is an absolute need for statutory regulation in this sector,” comments Nigel Mercer, president of The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons – a body that only has around a third of the industry as members. So crucially, patients considering cosmetic procedures need to ensure that they fully research the credentials of any private clinic or hospital they approach for plastic surgery. The Wellington Plastics Unit (based at HCA private medical group’s Wellington Hospital in North West London) boasts an outstanding reputation for excellence in the field of cosmetic surgery, with the finest surgical skills, a high level of diagnostic technology and nursing support. A first class facility, The Wellington Hospital offers outstanding medical care with an international reputation for excellence, results, managing complications and minimising recovery time.

With the operating theatres attached to the unit, a specially designed recovery room with full patient monitoring and highly qualified staff, the unit is able to provide for both day surgery and inpatients whatever their chosen procedure. Remember, if you are considering treatment, independent professional advice from an experienced and qualified surgeon is essential and should include discussion on suitability, results, complications and recovery. The Wellington provides comprehensive and high quality care support for all types of cosmetic surgery.

BEYOND
Without a diesel model in its line-up, buyers struggled to make sense of Infiniti, says Matthew Carter. But now that’s all changed
I
t must have been one of those classic Homer Simpson ‘Doh’ moments.
It refers to the car’s 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine,
motoring
developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance, and which goes some way to restoring the car’s environmental credentials.
Merge all four feeds together and you have a remarkable bird’s-eye image that appears to come
calibre
from some 20 feet above the car. Even Homer Simpson would be treated with due reverence. n

Jamie Carter presents the month’s hottest gadgets
Wide open spaces Flat screen TVs are getting flatter, with some new LED TVs’ depth measured in mere millimetres, but what about sound? Quality audio can only come from beefy speakers, and in an effort to give your home entertainment system a bit of oomph without adding cable clutter, we’ve witnessed a plethora of soundbars – such as this one from British audio brand Orbitsound – trying to sneak into living rooms. There’s an immediate problem with the T12, and that’s its complete lack of wall-mounting options. Still, for those who prefer not to hang their plasma or LCD TV above the fireplace, it’s physically perfect; its black, lacquered shell isn’t too large at 54cm across, and will suit almost any screen size. Also included is a subwoofer, and here’s where the T12 succeeds while other soundbars fail. Attached to the main unit by a single speaker cable and not individually powered, it’s possible to adjust the bass levels or, if you really can’t stand the thought of housing a huge black box (it’s slim at 22cm on each side, but does reach 46cm in height), it can be detached and forgotten, but I’d advise against that. Also not to be ignored is the T12’s built-in dock for an iPod, iPod Touch or iPhone. You’ll find it atop the main unit, and it works rather

well; tracks can be skipped and playlists chosen directly from a slim and simple remote control. This is actually the second version of the T12, with the major addition in this incarnation being a video output for that iPod dock. It’s joined by a slew of inputs that ought to allow you to connect almost any device – including any TV, of course – to the T12. Before we reveal if the T12 successfully boosts a TV’s audio, first know that Orbitsound promises a stereo sound that follows the listener around a room, principally by fitting the T12 with one centre speaker and two ‘spatial’ speakers at the unit’s sides. And in action, it’s obvious what’s going on; flick its ‘stereo width’ switch to ‘wide’ and the soundstage both lengthens and gets louder, though obvious stereo effects from such a narrow speaker are necessarily limited. As effective as that is for music, the sound isn’t nearly refined enough to challenge a proper home cinema system and, while it may offer more power than your TV’s speakers, the T12 is happiest being used as a music system for an iPhone; in a kitchen or diner, Orbitsound’s T12 is hugely impressive.

the golden age of Ian Poulter confesses to Josh Sims that he misses the golden age of golf style – the era of Bing Crosby and Bob Hope in pastel checks, or of Frank Sinatra, reputed to spend some $30,000 a year on orange knitwear from the Canyon Club shop in Palm Springs – even the swinger credibility of Jack Nicklaus, Dan Sanders and Arnold Palmer...

“S
tyle in golf just became too easy – all those XXL t-shirts and sloppy polos rather than a shirt that fits, multiple pleats rather than a flat-fronted trouser,” he says. “Golf itself has become more fashionable, appealing more to younger men, evolving so more people can get out there and enjoy it. But its style has yet to catch up. It’s time it revived its old colour and edge.” That is something he is busy putting right. It is a mission close to his heart. After all, Poulter is ranked seventh in the world. It is lucky for some: 2010 has also seen him take a second position in the Abu Dhabi Gold Championship and his first PGA Tour win, at the WGC Accenture World Match Play. All this, without his signature bootleg tartan trousers – “because plain trousers just look all the same” – stealing the limelight. With his company, IJP Design, Poulter is also bringing lightweight sleeveless striped cardigans, brightly-hued knee-length tailored shorts, neat, fitted polo shirts and even Swarowski crystalstudded belts to the course. These are smart garments in a broader sense as well, cut to allow necessary ease of movement, using technical fabrics to wick away moisture and maintain breathability. It is a brand doing as well in club shops as Poulter is on the course too. What began as an idea sketched on hotel letterhead paper in 2003, has this year gone into overdrive. As of this summer, it is sold in all 35 golf-playing nations, is moving into fashion retail and is set to expand in line with golf’s popularity. A women’s golf wear line and even one for kids is preparing to tee off for 2011. “My dad always dressed nattily, and one of my first jobs was selling menswear on a market stall,” says Poulter. “Sport was always my first love but I knew it was important to me to look good on the course and wear what I wanted. So I thought I’d best do it myself.” There is, however, more to IJP Design than Poulter’s love of flashy duds and his confession that he “tends to be a bit flamboyant off the course as well”. The clothing company is a longer term business prospect, a cashing in on his public profile and his sartorial reputation alike, with post-golf life in mind. “I don’t want to get to 50 and wonder what to do next, and I’ve always admired golfers who have looked beyond the sport alone to do something in the business of golf. But there is also a recognition among professional sportspeople in general that their increased visibility makes them brands now,” he explains. “Sportspeople are businesses, in part because they have to leverage

their names to have something in place for when they can’t play anymore.” To develop it as Poulter has done is, however, harder than it looks. Poulter’s insistence on wearing his own clothing means, for instance, that lucrative sponsorship deals are not in the offing – rather, young up-and-coming British players the likes of Steve Lewton, Giowan Suh and Gary Boyd are being sponsored by IJP. Few other golfers, with the exception of Greg Norman, have successfully pulled off launching a clothing line either. “It’s just too easy to sign up with some fashion brand now. If going my own way doesn’t work out, at least I’ve given it a try, and at least I’ve got to wear what I like,” he says. “It is a huge risk though. It requires huge investment. But I think there will be a growing crossover of golf and fashion in coming years. More players want to look good on the course and keep looking good in the clubhouse.” Indeed, while he certainly imposes his experience of play and his idea of taste on IJP Design products, the company is building a dedicated design team to keep the new collections coming. He needs it, since he still sees his job as playing championship golf, with a hectic schedule that leaves little time for pondering fabric swatches and samples. “My job is still to try to hole some putts and if I can give some design ideas on the side, that’s great,” he says – though the fact that putts equals units sold is not lost on him. “There’s certainly a relationship there to work with – success on the course translates into sales. For the moment, though, my working life has a very simple dynamic. It’s called performance-related pay. This isn’t football. In golf, if I don’t play well, I don’t get paid. That thought keeps you on your toes.” n For further information, visit www.ijpdesign.com

With Hallowe’en celebrations taking place during half term, Jenny White uncovers ghoulish and ghastly goings-on, as well as the most entertaining events to keep everyone amused
Gory Surprises Looking for horror, humour and gruesome goings-on? Then The London Dungeon guarantees you the spookiest day out with the kids. Every day is scary at Tooley Street, but this Hallowe’en is the most terrifying night of the year in the dungeons. This year, from 15–31 October, Jack O’Lantern and the echoing ‘Sounds of Hell’ take the leading role. Stingy Jack, damned by the devil and made to walk in darkness for all eternity with his turnip lantern, will be stalking the dark hellish corridors and could appear at any moment. Visitors who survive Jack’s lair may wish they hadn’t, as the gates of hell gape open to receive them, with an infamous recording of the ‘Sounds of
Hell’ echoing throughout the Dungeon’s mirrored labyrinth. The eerie screams of tortured souls will have you feeling the flames of hell and screaming for a reprieve from the fiery maze. Bringing back to life real history, horror and humour from the 21st century, live actors, a terrifying boat ride, shows and special effects will transport you to London’s gory past. Every treacherous turn takes you further into the realm of lost souls and there are plenty of horrific goings-on to explore this Hallowe’en – but are you brave enough? The London Dungeon Tooley Street, SE1 2SZ www.the-dungeons.com
Bugs in your Bed Creepy crawlies and slippery insects are all ghastly sights that slither out every Hallowe’en, and this is certainly the case this half term at London Zoo. BedBUGS sleepovers is brand new for 2010 and gives eight- to 11-year-olds the chance to spend the night at London Zoo. Experiencing the zoo in a whole new light, the sleepovers will be within the BUGS! centre so your little one will be snoozing with neighbours such as spiders, beetles or tarantulas – but don’t worry, they’re all safely behind glass. As well as checking out the residents, children will be kept busy
right up until bedtime with lots of activities, which include animal talks, tours, games and story-telling sessions – all animal-themed, of course! Kids will also be taken on a night time tour around the zoo, giving them the chance to find out what really goes on once all of the visitors and keepers have gone home, with many of the animals more active at night. Wicked Entertainment Looking for a wicked free day out this Hallowe’en half term to keep the kids entertained? Then head to St Pancras International station to experience the annual Wicked Day. Courtesy of the West End production of Wicked, this afternoon of Hallowe’en-themed events and activities is for all ages. Taking place throughout the station, it includes live performances from cast members, face painting, workshops and a range of activities to keep every child entertained. This is the fifth year that the Wicked Day has taken place, and all proceeds from the event will be donated to the funding of a project between Wicked and the Woodland Trust in support of the charity’s ‘More Trees More Good’ Heartwood Forest Appeal. The charity is currently planting England’s largest
new continuous native forest near St Albans and the money raised will go towards this cause. Wicked and the Woodland Trust will also work alongside London Wildlife Trust’s Camley Street Natural Park and St Pancras International’s chosen charity – New Horizon Youth Centre in Kings Cross – to engage, encourage and enable young people to interact with the natural environment, both on their doorsteps and outside of London at Heartwood Forest itself. This fun day out is not only entertainment for all the family, but is also educational for children. 12 noon–4pm, 31 October St Pancras International Station, Kings Cross www.wickedday.co.uk
Puppet Fun Movingstage established The Puppet Theatre Barge more than 25 years ago and during that time it has hosted thousands of performances. Based in Little Venice, it has become an established venue on the London theatre scene. Aiming to present innovative quality theatre with a view to raising the status and profile of the marionette, the company also has an active educational policy and runs a programme of work in schools, reaching large numbers of children every year. This half term sees Movingstage present The Town Mouse and The
Country Mouse in a special half term season for three- to eight-year-olds. With rod puppets, music and songs, this adaptation of one of Aesop’s Fables is about the adventures of two very different cousins who visit each other, discovering new places and meeting new people along the way, such as the Billy Goats Gruff. An exciting tale and unique venue, this is the perfect way to keep children entertained this half term. The Puppet Theatre Barge Little Venice, Blomfield Road, W9 2PF 020 7249 6876

PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST This month, the Kunsthaus Gallery in Zurich celebrates its 100th anniversary with an exciting new Picasso exhibition. The first-ever museum retrospective of Picasso’s work took place at the same gallery in 1932 and was curated by the artist himself. A unique feature of this exhibition, which takes place from 15 October 2010 to 30 January 2011, is that it will be the first of its kind to be entirely devoted to the works of Picasso, and will feature works originally chosen for the 1932 exhibition. Not to be missed by art lovers, the luxurious Dolder Grand will be offering guests a unique Picasso Arts Package during this period to celebrate this momentous event. The package will offer guests a discounted voucher to the exhibition with priority access, so that you can avoid the queues of adoring fans (art fans, that is). Le Pavillon des Lettres (sister hotel to Pavillon de la Reine) opens this month in Paris’ eighth arrondissement. The hotel’s unique concept not only sets it apart from the average high-calibre hotel, but also ties into Paris’ rich literary culture. Each of the 26 rooms is named after a letter of the alphabet and dedicated to a famous literary figure; with A for Andersen (Hans Christian) through to Z for Zola (Emile). In addition to books of the relevant author’s work, each room will have an iPad loaded with the room directory, books and music to satisfy your all your cultural needs. www.pavillondeslettres.com

At the foot of the majestic Topa Topa Mountains, in a beautiful pastoral valley only 90 minutes from Los Angeles, Annabel Goldie-Morrison discovers the tranquil Ojai Valley Inn & Spa
ike many people, I find that it takes a few days to settle into ‘holiday mode’, but in Ojai the process seemed to take just a few hours, and before you know it you can’t remember what day it is or whether there was anything requiring your attention – nor do you really care. Every last detail at the Inn is designed around comfort and relaxation. Separate one-story haciendas are spread throughout the expansive 220-acre resort, each with a beautiful courtyard at their centre, tinkling fountains and a myriad of colourful plant life. The rooms and suites manage to exude luxury from every corner, and yet combine this with a relaxed and friendly style – a real home away from home with vast beds, Ojai Nest bedding, remote controlled fireplaces and comfy sofas. Getting around the resort is a pleasure in itself – walkways through the golf course and gardens are buzzing with hummingbirds, geckos dart here and there, and the scent of flowers and herbs fills the air. One of the most renowned features of the Inn is the newly refurbished Spa Ojai. It offers an amazing array of treatments, many of which utilise local, seasonal produce such as lavender, avocado, pumpkin and pixie tangerines. Lavender-soaked chilled face towels are handily placed outside the saunas and steam rooms, and women and men can enjoy their separate areas or meet up by one of the two outdoor pools.
I can recommend the Kuyam mud treatment to anyone seeking a mind and body experience. Inspired by the Chumash Indians who once called this valley home, it involves cleansing mud, dry heat, inhalation and a guided meditation. At the unique Artist’s Cottage & Apothecary, the custom blending class introduces you to a wide selection of essential oils from which you can create personalised scents and lotions to take home with you. The art programme includes classes ranging from mixed media, painting on glass, silverpoint drawing and silk scarf painting, to the signature ‘Mandala’ drawing, an introspective and very personal class. With four different restaurants, there are plenty of options within the resort to satisfy discerning diners. California’s central coast is celebrated for the way its Mediterranean microclimates encourage a rich harvest from its fertile orchards, ranches, farms and ocean waters, and the Inn takes full advantage of this. The cuisine includes fresh, seasonal and locally grown ingredients, complimented by an award-winning wine collection centred on the abundance of world-class vineyards nearby. Great gourmet delights are on offer at Maravilla in the evening, including prime steaks, chops and the freshest seafood, the succulent ‘Chicken Under A Brick’ and deluxe comfort food such as truffle macaroni cheese – best savoured

One of the best ways to experience the serenity and natural beauty that the Chumash Indians and early Spanish settlers discovered in the Ojai Valley is on horseback. We went for a trail ride through the picturesque Ojai Land Conservancy, high up in the mountains, across fragrant meadows, winding along dusty tracks through ravines and across rushing rivers, with no sign of human life anywhere – a chance to forget entirely the outside world and dream a while of the Wild West. The town of Ojai contains a surprising blend of cosmopolitan style and small-town charm and is easily reached on foot, by bicycle or car. It’s home to an eclectic mix of writers, artists, philosophers and agricultural growers, and the beautiful homes hidden away in the surrounding hills sequester a lot of the Hollywood crowd seeking a restful getaway from the hectic pace of LA. It’s easy to see where they’re coming from. As the sun sets on the Topa Topa range and bathes the valley in a soft pink glow, there really is no need for rose-tinted spectacles in Ojai. n
Beverly Hills A brief stop in Los Angeles is must if you’re flying in or out of LAX, and I’ve always been fond of the palm-fringed oasis of Beverly Hills; a great base for shopping and sightseeing, but also gives you the real ‘LA experience’. Montage Beverly Hills is the newest hotel in the famous 90210 zipcode, and is perfect for business and leisure travellers alike. The rooms are luxurious and comfortable, and the huge spa is a destination in itself. A visit to celebrity ‘blonder’ Kim Vo, whose salon is based at Spa Montage, is a must – some A-list highlights are a great souvenir!
on the Terrace whilst enjoying the famous ‘Pink Moment’ that occurs at sunset throughout the valley. Jimmy’s Pub offers a casual, all-day dining experience next to the golf course, with a great selection of Californian micro-brewed beers, 60-inch plasma screen TVs playing major sporting events, and a range of delicious pizzas and burgers. There’s a reason the cookie dough skillet is the only dessert on the menu at Jimmy’s – once you’ve had it, there is just no contender! There are a great variety of activities at the Inn, not least of which is the golf. The 18-hole championship course at Ojai follows the natural lie of the land, heavily populated with beautiful old oak trees and is surrounded by the most beautiful mountain vistas. The Inn also boasts a complete tennis centre with four hard courts, and other activities on offer include guided lake fishing and kayaking, with beach activities such as surfing and sailing just minutes away.

Dining options in Beverly Hills are endless, but Chaya Brasserie just off Robertson Boulevard has an eclectic menu of the best sushi I’ve ever had, and fine French cuisine. Kobe beef bolognese and lobster rolls were two particular favourites. Montage Beverly Hills’ own restaurant, Parq, is well worth a visit – a lot of thought goes into the creative menu, and opt for the wine pairings to get the best experience. For world class shopping, Rodeo Drive is around the corner from the Montage, or the house car (a Maybach, no less) can drop you off at Robertson Boulevard or The Grove Mall.
Expedia offers seven nights room only at the five-star Ojai Valley Inn from £1,600 per person, based on two sharing a king room. Ski season is coming
As the winter draws closer, now is the ideal time to start thinking about the coming season. Emma Fitzmaurice gets you prepared
I
f you’ve invested in ski equipment then it is worth looking after it properly by giving it a pre-season overhaul: Check your bindings by forcing the release having tightened up the settings. Also check your boot heels and toes for signs of wear that might prevent them from releasing cleanly from the bindings, and make sure they haven’t suffered from rot or distortion resulting from unnoticed damp when you put them away last year. When you’ve finished, don’t forget to leave your ski boots buckled so they retain their shape. If you own high carbon steel skis then check they were properly wiped down at the end of the previous season. Examine the bottom for damage and get any deep scratches or chips professionally repaired. Check for burrs along the edges of the skis and remove them as required using a stone. A few extra sweeps of the stone along the edges will help maintain the crispness that you are looking forward to feeling next time you put them to work. This is also the time to give your skis a waxing. This protects the ski against scratches and other marks and also helps prevent the sun from causing damage through oxidation. Of course the wax also has water repelling properties which is why it makes such a difference to the action on the slopes. Spread a thin layer of liquid, paste or melted cake wax over the base of the ski or if you really love your skis and want to give them a treat, take them to a ski shop for a proper hot waxing.
Now your equipment is sorted, it’s time to get yourself prepared. Fitness is crucial if you want to avoid injury and not end up wasting your time in a plaster cast. Build in some time for pre-season exercises as they will help you avoid the worst of the aches and pains typically suffered by skiers the day after you first hit the slopes. High-stepping is great training for the legs as it exercises the same muscles you will use when doing deep knee bends. Swimming, jogging and running are great exercises for anyone who wants to improve their general strength and aerobic fitness but downhill running on a gentle incline will specifically help you tone up the muscles you will be using on the slopes. If you go to the gym then you are probably in better shape than most but start putting in some extra time on the resistance machines that help you work your upper thighs. All that is left now is time to get in some pre-season training. This will help you polish up your skills and make it less likely you will suffer any embarrassing incidents in faraway places. Fortunately there are many indoor ski facilities up and down the country where you have the opportunity to take to the snow. If you’ve never tried this sort of thing then it is certainly time you had a go as, apart from the view, these slopes are not just as good as the real thing, they are the real thing. In fact in some respects they are better, particularly in terms of reliability as the fact that they are indoors means they are not susceptible to adverse weather which might otherwise mess up the quality of the surface.

HELLO HAMPSTEAD It was back in 2004 that Melrose & Morgan opened in Primrose Hill; since then this grocery shop and kitchen has become something of an institution and now the residents of Hampstead Village get the chance to see what all the fuss is about with the second outlet in Oriel Place. Melrose & Morgan prides itself on offering a wide range of seasonal foods, hand-prepared with premium ingredients. Also on the menu is a selection of everyday kitchen essentials sourced from the finest suppliers and producers. At the heart of the shop is a wonderful open kitchen where customers can watch - and chat to - the friendly chefs. Their prepared foods are presented on a central table, which is set three times a day; for breakfast, lunch and dinner. From here customers can choose to either take food home or enjoy something to eat in. There is also an in-house pastry chef who creates a mouth-watering range of hand-baked goods including tarts, cakes and biscuits, along with an equally irresistible savoury selection that features Melrose & Morgan’s legendary sausage rolls. Packaging is kept to a minimum and recycled or recyclable products are used wherever possible. Deliveries are also made via the Melrose & Morgan electric van. They really are worth a try!

CARPACCIO Carpaccio is a dish made from thinly sliced raw meat or fish, drizzled with olive oil and lemon juice. The most common variation of carpaccio is made with beef. Stories differ as to its origins, but the consensus seems to be that it originates from Italy and is the result of a wealthy lady being told by her doctor that she must only eat raw meat and struggling to find something to suitable on the restaurant menu.

More
Gastro than Pub Resident food critic, Ruthe Wainman visit The Wells Tavern for stylish, modern and affordable fare
C
harged with focussing on restaurants in Hampstead, I’ve actually found it quite a tough call. Like so many London suburbs, a fair percentage of the village’s culinary offering is made up of chains. To be fair, there are a number of exceptions, which is why when an influential foodie friend recommended I try out local gastro pub The Wells Tavern, I didn’t need much persuasion. Even from the outside The Wells stands apart from the crowd, housed, as it is in a stunning Georgian villa just a stone’s thrown from the Heath. As my companion and I approached one recent Friday lunchtime, we were greeted by groups of Yummy Mummies, the ubiquitous buggies in tow and dogs all dining al fresco in the October sunshine. Inside the interior design is modern, with its charcoal coloured walls, wooden floors and stylish open fire, all set off by a contemporary chandelier. It was very chic, understated and relaxed - definitely more gastro than pub. Upstairs there are a couple of elegant dining rooms, perfect for a more private dinner party seating up to 22. Noticing the extensive cocktail list, I thought it would be rude not to sample one of The Wells’ impressive sounding concoctions. I plumped for a Coffee Martini and whilst it was undeniably delicious, it probably would have been more appropriate as an after dinner drink than as an aperitif! The Wells offers a daily-changing, seasonal menu presided over by longstanding Head Chef Greg Smith. Anything with figs and nuts gets my
vote so I had no problem choosing my starter, a mouth-watering combination of goat’s cheese and pecan nuts with figs, watercress and chicory leaves, all enlivened with a dash of pomegranate dressing. My companion being a meat lover opted for the chorizo and feta salad with cherry vine tomatoes, cucumber and olives. He duly pronounced it equally as light on the palate. With the likes of sausages and mash and chateaubriand on the menu the next course was a tougher choice. I finally decided on the confit duck leg with braised red cabbage, potato dauphinoise and fine beans with a glazing of crème de cassis and blackcurrant jus. This was one of the most delicious dishes I’ve tasted for a while and one I’d love to try out myself at home. To accompany the dish, Simon, one of The Wells’ managers, suggested a glass of El Grano Carmenere – a Chilean wine whose blackcurrant, blackberry and pepper notes were the perfect complement to the duck. My companion meanwhile couldn’t resist the rib-eye steak with shallot and tarragon butter accompanied by a very generous portion of chips and watercress salad. The little touches such as the homemade mayonnaise and ketchup were most welcome; once again the
accent was very much on the gastro rather than the pub. Unfortunately for the waistline, the desserts proved too hard to resist. I enjoyed samplers of the damson and apple crumble with ginger custard - a wonderful combination of flavours, light in texture and not too sweet – and the richly seductive Grand Marnier and orange Jaffa chocolate pot. My companion had the cheese plate; my only criticism was that the selection could have benefited from some chutney. The owner of The Wells is Beth Coventry, whose sister is Fay Maschler, the nation’s most respected restaurant critic. Perhaps some sibling advice has helped ensure the exemplary quality of the dishes. The food is only part of the story however. Also setting the place apart, with relaxed and friendly service; everything possible was done to make us feel welcome and involved. It’s difficult to think of an occasion that The Wells Tavern wouldn’t be perfect for. From a family meal to a romantic evening for two, it ticks all the boxes. I for one will be making a speedy return visit. n The Wells, 30 Well Walk, NW3 1BX 020 7794 3785 www.thewellshampstead.co.uk

State of the market LETTINGS:
SALES:
Take advantage of the market
The only word is unpredictable
GIDEON GOLD, MANAGER FOR HAMPTONS INTERNATIONAL,
Neil Sloam, managing director of Brian Lack & Co,
COMMENTS ON THE CURRENT TRENDS IN THE RENTAL MARKET
comments on the current trends in the residential sales market
The rental market in St John’s Wood, Regent’s Park and Maida Vale remains buoyant with rents staying strong due to the continued imbalance between high demand and a severe lack of quality properties to rent. This shortage is due to the exceptional demand and a record number of tenancies renewing from last year. Our advice to landlords would be if you have a property to let, don’t wait - take advantage of the market now. We see this pattern of inequality between supply and demand continuing until at least the end of the year. Demand will fall in the final quarter, however even this reduced demand will outstrip the limited supply of quality properties coming available. Our recommendation to tenants is therefore to be prepared to compromise - this is key for tenants in what remains a landlord’s market. There has been much discussion concerning the increase of the Assured Shorthold Tenancies (AST) rent threshold. From the 1 October the threshold for Housing Act Tenancies was raised to a rental level of £100,000 pa from its previous £25,000pa limit. The change will be retrospective and will be applied to existing tenancies that were contractual specifically due to their rental level. This has an impact on landlords in a number of ways; the tenancy deposit must now be registered with one of the Tenancy Deposit Protection Schemes, the statutory notice period for landlords to terminate the Tenancy may differ from the contract, and forfeiture actions for rent arrears may cause some difficulty as they will now have to be in line with the Grounds of the Housing Act 1988. The above sentiment means that investors have an appetite to purchase properties and are keen on all opportunities. Additionally, capital availability has eased and rental yields are improving due to increased rental prices. London is certainly a different entity to the UK, St John’s Wood being a fantastic multi-cultural area with a local, national and international market.
The only word to describe the market at the moment has to be ‘unpredictable’. As well as being hard to fathom, the market is extremely price sensitive as well. Due to a lack of property, central London prices are holding up. The only problem is some estate agents are over-valuing, because they desperately need stock on their books. Without it, they can’t operate, but there’s no point over-inflating prices – highlypriced property will just sit there. We take the view that we need to be realistic or we’re not really helping the vendor. If a home lingers on the market too long at too high a price, it appears there’s something wrong with it and it won’t shift. The ‘unpredictable’ factor also comes into play when some property sells quicker for no obvious reason. Recently, two flats of equal size and quality in the same building went on the market. One sold sharply at the asking price, while the other place didn’t move. There’s an element of finding the right buyer at the right time, and of course, the agent must market a home correctly, too. The problem is that vendors are normally about six months behind the market, which means they’ll only put their homes up for sale if they believe they’ll get what they want for them. While many over-value their homes, buyers are a lot more savvy - browsing property websites they can easily work out average values. We’re trying to educate sellers to be more level-headed and pragmatic. The end of the year will tell if stagnation between what the buyer is willing to pay and what the seller will accept starts to change. Realistic vendors and buyers together could banish the ‘unpredictable’, leading to a more rational and stable market. Furniture for luxury homes of the world British designer Clive Christian has a passion for the ultra luxe. He is undoubtedly a unique and influential force within the global luxury design world
VANTAGEpromotion
Described by the commissioning editor of the Sunday Times Style magazine as “someone who has strengthened British brands” Clive is as well known for his breathtaking interiors as he is for his uniquely expensive perfumes, with a devoted following across the globe from premier league football stars to award-winning musicians, politicians, entrepreneurs and Hollywood stars. Clive’s own philosophy when designing is to “Design it first – to be the absolute best it can be – then cost it” so that the end result is always focused on the clients vision not budget. The philosophy of the Clive Christian Design House is to create rooms that are both timeless and luxurious, inspired by periods of great British architecture and to partner with the finest in current technology. These values ultimately bring an established character to the interior, transforming a new build property into a home with soul or complementing a period home with architectural and design echoes from the time of their creation. Clive Christian Design Styles find their place in all properties from penthouses to country mansions. The Clive Christian Design House was founded over thirty years ago in Cheshire and Clive was the first designer to put chandeliers into kitchens which labelled the company as “eccentric” in the 1990s. Now this is the signature of a Clive Christian kitchen and the design house has been credited with revolutionising the way society views ‘the heart of the home’ – not merely a functional work space, but instead a perfect accompaniment to the ultimate luxury lifestyle. For Clive Christian the finest quality of manufacture is paramount to ensure each design stands the test of time and meets the high standards expected of the brand. Clive Christian maintains a factory in the North of England where each project is made to order working with managed resources of European Oak, American Black Walnut, Tulip wood and Cherry tree. A series of workshops with apprenticeship programs implement 300 year old skill sets including veneering, joinery, carving and marquetry enabling the Clive Christian Design House to personalise each project with monograms or coats of arms – the most unusual request to date being the image of a family’s beloved West Highland White terrier whose face was carefully worked into the entire project in detailed marquetry. The Clive Christian Design House and flagship showroom in Cheshire supports a network of fifty independent dealerships around the world representing the Clive Christian brand from Moscow to Beverly Hills. The Clive Christian Brentwood showroom in Essex was established some 12 years ago and since then brothers Stephen and David Cowling have been helping to make luxury homes in London and the Home Counties more beautiful. Until recently the showroom in Brentwood featured the classic Clive Christian Victorian Kitchen – the most famous kitchen in the world – which is instantly recognisable by its large island and traditional mantel with carved corbels in painted cream and gold leaf. This is in fact the kitchen chosen by Rod Stewart and Shania Twain and is a design classic however the showroom has recently been refurbished to present the newest Clive Christian Design Style – The Architectural Collection. The Architectural Design Style is designed for the larger luxury property due to the enhanced details and grand scale - the Architectural kitchen in Ivory and British Antique grey glaze and Black Oak is now installed in the Clive Christian Brentwood showroom followed by the Architectural Dining Room in the same Clive Christian ‘cool luxury’ colour palette. In contrast to this you will also discover the ‘warm luxury’ palette of the Architectural Lounge in Antique Yew Lustre.
Clockwise above: Clive Christian Classic Dressing Room in Cream Architectural Kitchen in Painted Ivory & Black Oak Panelled Dining Room In Antique Yew Lustre
Where many projects may start in the kitchen the client soon becomes aware of how the room gracefully establishes itself in the property. The client then seeks to extend the Clive Christian Designs throughout the whole home, starting with the butler’s pantry through to the dining room and study, upstairs to the bedrooms and of course completing with the matching his and hers dressing rooms. Clive Christian’s ability to address these requests enables the client to create a real sense of harmony throughout the home whilst also founding a sensible investment. For a personal introduction to the Clive Christian style or to commission a design for your home do contact the team at Clive Christian Brentwood on 01277 223 016.
