As I came to put the finishing touches to this September’s dedicated fashion issue, I was reminded of something the inimitable Chanel once said: “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” The way we dress and the kind of style that we evoke is so tied to where we live, and with London as one of the four fashion capitals of the world it’s no wonder that this city offers the best of everything chic, couture and classic. Researching this issue and thinking through the features we’ve included, the Vantage team has been delighted and inspired by the wealth of fashion expertise right on our doorstep. A true fashion captial, in every sense of the word. So it seems quite fitting that our special fashion issue takes you all over NW and beyond, into every aspect of your lives and where you live. In our six page local feature we explore the stylish streets of St John’s Wood, stroll through the fashion boutiques of Primrose Hill, hunt out a vintage delight in Hampstead and snap up a statement piece in Marylebone (p.16). Of all the fashion designers in the world, Coco Chanel’s legacy is the one that has burned brightest, reached furthest and lasted longest. Emma Mills meets author of a new book on Chanel and NW resident Justine Picardie to discuss the most important woman in fashion
I
t is hard to know where to begin when we consider the kind of legacy Chanel has left the world of fashion, and more crucially the world of women. She not only changed the way we dress, but she changed the way we look. She was one of the first women to cut her hair short, and to keep it short throughout her life, while also singlehandedly introducing tailoring for women, affording us the same status and power through excellently cut suits that previously only men had enjoyed. “Men had this sartorial dignity that came with the sharp cut of suit,” explains author and fashion editor Justine Picardie. “That simply wasn’t available to women until Chanel.” The list goes on. Tweed jackets – the ones you see across the high street from Whistles to Boden – are an “entirely Chanel invention”. The tweed used in Chanel jackets is still sourced in Scotland and Cumbria where Chanel first started using it. She is also the reason women now wear such comfortable, well-fitting clothes, popularising trousers, jumpers and cardigans for women. She sought so much of her inspiration from the way men dressed – famously adopting the Breton striped sailor tops that have become a trademark Chanel look. And she embraced black, taking it from something worn only in mourning to a distinctive and definitive colour of its own. “I imposed black,” says the opening quote from Chanel in Justine Picardie’s book. “And it’s still going strong today, for black wipes out everything else around.” And it was her own mourning period for her lover Boy Capel in 1919, along with that of hundreds of women widowed by the First World War, that gave rise to an item so deeply ingrained in fashion culture it can represented by just three letters – the LBD. “It was in fact the little black dress that my mother got married in that first made me aware of how important Chanel was,” explains Justine. “Very romantically my parents met at the open air theatre in Regent’s Park where my father, who was an actor, was performing in The Tempest. They married months later and she wore an amazing little black dress, not a Chanel, but a licensed copy of a Chanel black dress, which obviously she kept and I then began to wear as a teenager. As I became older and more aware of fashion I started to understand Chanel, and I realised what an important statement it was to get married in that dress. It made me think about the power of the little black dress. It was such a radical statement, the complete antithesis of a traditional white wedding gown. And it was that dress that made me think about fashion and what it means; that it can be more than the surface of things and say so much more.” And thus begun a fascination with Chanel that finally led Justine Picardie to write her extraordinary biography Chanel: The Legend and the Life – a comprehensive look at Chanel’s complex, and sometimes contradictory, personal life, her revolutionary impact on the world of fashion
and the incredible lasting legacy she has left. When I see Justine Picardie talking about the book at Daunt Books in Marylebone she has carefully dressed in an outfit that owes its origins entirely to Chanel. “Firstly I’m wearing jeans. Chanel didn’t wear jeans but she wore comfortable trousers and I think jeans are the closest you can get to comfy trousers these days,” she explains to a captivated audience. “My jeans come from Gap because she believed strongly in the democratisation of fashion. “My ballet pumps are classic Chanel ballet pumps, because she believed women should always be able to walk in their shoes. And they’re red because Chanel said women should always wear a touch of red to be reminded of the blood within us. The Breton striped top I’m wearing, which is also from Gap, is obviously a testament to her famous stripey sailor tops that you still see everywhere. Then over that I’m wearing an old navy Chanel jacket. It’s very soft, made of jersey, which was something she started using during WW1, when material was scarce and jersey was about the only thing she could get hold of - but even then she turned it into something creative. And navy was one of the colours she used with great success,” she finishes, smiling. Quite aside from her amazing fashion history, Chanel also had a fascinating life story; at times ambiguous, and even controversial, she has certainly lived in every respect. The perfect subject for a biographer? “What interests me as a writer are the forces that drive fashion, and Chanel as a woman, an icon, a symbol of change in women’s status

and the way they look is at the centre of that. She’s got it all,” says Justine. But the life story of this iconic enigma came with a series of contradictory accounts of her past that Justine needed to pick through, sorting truth from embellishment, fiction from fantasy, and never ever shying away from some of the more unpopular aspects of Chanel’s character. A tough task, but under Justine’s careful hand, Chanel emerges a wonderfully flawed but at the same time intriguing woman, in no way perfect, but in so many ways compelling. “It helps if you feel empathy for your subject,” says Justine. “If people want to prove a point or dislike their subject it’s problematic. Of course there were times when I was exasperated by her, but I was always intrigued by her. And, ultimately I ended up admiring Chanel, she became the heroine of my book. She did make some bad judgements in her life – getting involved with a German officer in Paris during WW2 was not a high point, for instance – but it doesn’t make her wicked, it simply makes her flawed.” Yet, it is exactly these flaws that make her so special. Renowned for being misleading and contradictory about her life, this was a trait that stemmed from a challenging past of which she was ashamed. Born illegitimately into extreme poverty in 1883, losing her mother at a young age and being abandoned by her father, Chanel was left with her sister as a small child to grow up in a convent, a past she tried hard to erase she got older. “The thing is that shame can manifest itself in many ways,” muses Justine. “And her way of dealing with it was to rewrite her history; to tell stories about herself. In many ways I think she was her own best creation. She reinvented women’s clothes, thereby reinventing a fashion past and she then reinvented her own past while in the process of inventing who she was a woman.” Justine speaks with such warmth, it’s clear that her relationship with Chanel has been long and fruitful. Even at the age of three or four Justine says she knew how important Chanel was. “I remember a bottle of Chanel No5 sitting on my mother’s dressing table, and knowing innately that it was something special. There was something so distinctive about

the black and white design. In many ways I associate that bottle with learning to read. As I got older that label became familiar and the letters on it started to mean something.” This small moment in childhood eventually led Justine to Chanel’s private apartments in 1998, when she went to interview custodian of the brand, the inimitable Karl Lagerfeld, and took the opportunity to talk to him about Chanel. From here the biography started to take shape and in the course of her research she not only visited the convent where Chanel grew up – finding what she thinks could be the origins of the infamous interlocking Cs in its stained glass windows – but also spent an incredible evening with Chanel’s niece. “Because she lives a long way out of Paris I stayed with her one evening, and as she was showing me up to my room, she took me to a series of wardrobes that held all of Chanel’s own clothes. She kindly allowed me to look through them. At one point I tried on one of her jackets, still beautifully chic, and when I went to put my hands in the pockets her handkerchief was still in there, as I pulled it out you could still smell the unmistakable scent of Chanel No5. It was an amazing moment.” This progression full circle through fashion history, starting and ending with Chanel’s signature scent, is the kind of poetry you see in a perfectly crafted Chanel jacket. Amazingly, there is still more in Justine’s childhood that ties her to Chanel. Growing up as a child in Marylebone, Justine used to see interlocking Cs on lampposts all over the city, and had heard an urban legend that they pertained to Chanel. “During the research for the book I visited the Westminster archives and had it confirmed from the archivist there, and her predecessor, that they were indeed the Chanel interlocking Cs, put on lampposts around Marylebone and Mayfair by her lover, the Duke of Westminster, as a romantic gesture to the woman that he could not and would never marry, but loved so much,” she says. The book was clearly for Justine an incredible labour of love, taking nearly ten years to complete and bringing together an unprecedented level of research. The images, which run throughout the book, include exclusive sketches from Lagerfeld and never before seen images of Chanel, as well as some of the brand’s earliest advertising and personal photos of her with Boy Capel and the Duke of Westminster. Reviews of the book have commented on how the book is put together with the same thought, care and elegance as a Chanel suit, and for Justine this couldn’t be higher praise. “I am proud of the book, and I hope that I have brought together all the disparate strands of Chanel’s life and woven them together into something readable in a way that reflected my subject. I do know that when I had to rework a chapter or a sentence 37 times, as she would rework a sleeve or a hem, I felt I was doing her justice.” n Chanel: The Legend and the Life is available at Daunt Books Hampstead, and Marylebone. isiting Stephen Webster’s jewellery store in Beverly Hills is a unique experience, and perhaps the best demonstration of the kind of kudos and glamour that encapsulates the Stephen Webster brand. Part bar, part shop, part art gallery, it is a fitting showcase for what is now an iconic lifestyle brand. “I’d like to have some more stores like the one in Beverly Hills,” explains Stephen at his Mayfair offices. “It’s in an iconic location on Rodeo Drive, looking straight onto the Beverly Wilshire. Our bar and lounge is called No Regrets, I show art that I like and have musicians and DJs that interest me and we have evenings with 300 people spilling onto the pavement enjoying the atmosphere. And it’s great; it’s turned into something else. It’s still come out of the jewellery, but it’s taken the brand to another place.” The Stephen Webster brand is indeed a vital force in the world of jewellery, and as Stephen will attest, the people buying his jewellery subscribe to the whole lifestyle associated

Stephen’s glamorous, rockstar life has been welldocumented, but, as he says, that’s ok, because it is the biggest driving force in his design. “My life is completely an inspiration for what I do, and what I create. And I think because of that it makes it real. You apply what you like in life to what you do. Otherwise it’s all a bit fake; you’d be making it up. So, everything I do, even the collaborations with other brands, is driven by the things in my life that I love.” He points to a bespoke Harley Davidson petrol tank nestled on a windowsill amidst photos of the various personalities and celebrities he’s designed jewellery for. “That completely came together because of the kind of lifestyle I have and the people I meet. We were one of the first brands that made a launch a real party, you know, a good night out. Now brands work with us because they want to buy into the image that comes with the brand.” Clearly business is booming. But it wasn’t always this way. As with any brand that brings something aggressively

work with amazing stones – things like savarites, tanzanites and tourmalines – they weren’t normal. The business then was all diamonds, pearls and sapphires. Being able to work with something new and being in such a vibrant place gave me confidence in myself as a designer and a jeweller.” Things were going well, and in 1989 Stephen decided to return to London to bring his jewellery home, but found a traditional marketplace that simply wasn’t ready for his bold, colourful work. And so began ten years of working in London and selling his jewellery in America. “It was strange. There was only a few of us, we were a tiny little business and we’d make jewellery, flog it, and repeat. But I wasn’t building my brand or my business particularly.” Strangely, despite the fact that Britain wasn’t ready for Stephen’s jewellery, it was exactly his Britishness that made him a success in the US. “We did our first show in Las Vegas. And it was incredible. We had a product that was right for the market and no one else was doing it. It was quite British in a way; we were cheeky, bold and

different and new to the market, it has taken many years of working and waiting for the success that Stephen and his team now enjoy. “When I first tried to sell my jewellery here 22 years ago there was no place for it. I’d go into jewellers to show them my work and they wouldn’t know what to do with it.” Things did eventually change in Britain, but, despite his proudly British roots, the first part of Stephen’s career was focused across the pond in the US and Canada. Having left school at 16, unsure of what he wanted to do but knowing he was creative and loved fashion, Stephen came across jewellery and decided then and there that it was to be his craft. “It just looked like what I’d always imagined I’d be doing, it made sense to me, it was making things, and using my hands. I’d loved the small amount of stuff I’d done at school which was hands on, and I knew I could do this. And that I was going to be the best. And in some ways I have made that happen.” Finishing a jewellery apprenticeship, Stephen moved to America to work for a jeweller who spent his days scouring the globe for some of the best gems in the world. He first worked in Canada for four years, until the business moved to Santa Barbara in California, which was to provide the inspiration behind his now iconic, bold designs. “I developed my style there, and taught myself to be a designer. Santa Barbara was full on, and very exciting. I was getting the opportunity to

had an attitude in a world that had no attitude, just prestige and snobbery!” Stephen later says this show was one of the defining moments of his career, a celebration of a decade of work and recognition from a market that had supported him throughout those early years. For a time, American success was enough, but the tide was turning and Stephen knew it was only a matter of time before Britain woke up. Then in 1995 renowned jewellery house Garrard gave Stephen a show, which he says was the first sign of anyone in Britain showing any interest. “In some ways we were ready for when the rest of the world began to embrace jewellery as the next thing in fashion. And by that I mean that it became fashionable to wear jewellery again. By then my style was edgy, inspired by tattoos and rock and roll - the press got hold of me, because they needed characters and a story, and things started to shift. Since then it’s felt like we are trying to run to keep up.” Despite this mushroom effect on his business, and the fact that he now boasts a team that includes a designer from Chanel’s own jewellery house in Paris and graduates from the Royal College, Stephen refuses to lose sight of being involved with the design. “If I’m not involved people will know, there’s something in the DNA and you can get it right or wrong, and that’s the challenge.” It’s now sixteen years since Stephen’s first show in London and he is still credited as one of the great jewellery innovators, working with new materials, designing new techniques and being at the forefront of a trend that has seen a massive upsurge in jewellery for men. “It was a really conscious choice to get more men wearing jewellery. For a long time there were few places for a guy to look at a whole collection, all that was on offer to us was cygnet rings, cufflinks, pens and some other hideous things! I launched the Ray Man collection which got a lot of press, and then another collection using iron which our male clients went mad for. It pushed enough boundaries but offered something men really loved to wear. And I think that’s where a lot of our success has been, understanding our clients. Men are loyal, once you’ve got them as a client they don’t stop buying things, they get right into it and buy into
the lifestyle you’re offering. They’re a perfect client really!” Stephen didn’t stop pushing the boundaries there, crediting his unique Crystal Haze collection as not only his favourite, but a vital chapter in his life. Crystal Haze is, essentially, a technique that Stephen invented and has used to great effect. The process involves layering a stone under another stone, to make it look bigger. “The concept is extremely old, it dates back to the Victorian era, but the way I used it was very new. And I suddenly had something no one else had,” explains Stephen. “It changed everything for us. It felt really rock and roll, like an illusion. I was credited with reinventing the cocktail ring, which set off something in New York, then Madonna had one, and then Crystal Haze became a whole collection.” These days Stephen still works on designing some of the most imaginative and exciting collections around; you only have to look at his latest Murder She Wrote range to see its genius lies in his playful and subversive streak. Then there’s the other side of his focus, his role as creative director of Garrard which sees him working with an established name as custodian of the brand. “It’s been really cool being part of that, especially since they gave me my first show in the UK. And something as old and respected as Garrard comes with a clout which is different to my brand – and it’s been exciting watching it develop.” A busy man, then, but Stephen’s home life, split between Marylebone and the Kent coast, offers a place to get away and find new inspiration. “I love London - my walk to work has got to be one of the best walks to work in the world, from my flat on Monatgue Square down to Mayfair. But my home is Kent. I have to be by the sea, it’s my second biggest inspiration, its rich blue colours, and its changeable nature – it has a really strange influence on my work and I love it. I wake up and can see France from my window, it’s magic.” Stephen clearly finds inspiration everywhere and perhaps most pertinently is still moved and motivated by the rich history of his industry. “When you think about Lalique or Cartier, these people were incredible – you look back through their body of work and get a bit blown away by it. And I love the way that a jeweller in history has been looked at differently over the years. Do you know that in Saxon times the craftsmanship was so incredible, that they’d cut the jeweller’s Achilles tendons so he couldn’t leave? It was better to cripple a jeweller than lose him! “Even these days, people like my good friend Turkish designer Sevan Bicakci, amaze me. His headquarters in Istanbul are like an old jewellery house, this incredible building full of artisans. I love it when I see something that’s a combination of incredible design and craftsmanship, – because jewellery has got to be both. You can be the best designer in the world, but it’s only half the story. Jewellery is a craft, we’re not artists, we’re artisans.” n

rom acclaimed milliner Stephen Jones to accessories queen (and this month’s Vantage interviewee) Anya Hindmarch, the talented designers who have appeared in the magazine over the past few months have been full of praise for London as a hotbed of creative talent and opportunity. Sure, they collectively acknowledge the struggle that those aspiring to enter the fashion industry face. But they are equally quick to describe the buzz of the city, the network of professionals already established here and the inspiration which lies all around them. And North West London certainly possesses some of the most eminent alumni and vibrant style scenery in the whole of the capital. In an age where edgy street-based style once again reigns supreme, Camden Market continues to draw up to 100,000 visitors each weekend, who flock to trawl through rails of classic gowns, punk-inspired get-ups and everything in between. In fact, Wayne Hemingway MBE, the man entrusted to bring the best of vintage fashion to this year’s London Fashion Weekend, started his award-winning label Red or Dead from a market stall in the area, back in 1981. Such was the popularity of his subversive brand of cool that nine years later,
Red or Dead began showing on the catwalk and expanding with lines of swimwear, spectacles and stockings. Today, the pattern is often reversed and renowned fashion designers Stella McCartney and Jean Paul Gaultier are amongst those who have been spotted preparing for their high profile runway collections amongst the eclectic ranges of Buck Street and Camden Stables Market. It is the statement pieces from their own drops which tend to pop up in the boutiques of neighbouring Primrose Hill and Hampstead, sought by the savvy boutique owners who count Vogue fashion editors and models as regulars. These areas have a more refined charm than Camden, but a similarly defiant independence and have resisted any infiltration of high street chains, largely because they are so fabulous and well-liked. Look to the residents of such areas and it is easy to understand why there is such a flourishing and unique fashion community in NW. There are catwalk beauties, both iconic and emerging, who effortlessly project the essence of fashion, those who so perfectly capture it on film and those who take this essence forward in new ways with their designs. Attracted to the locality for its creative and chic atmosphere, the businesses continue to blossom around them. It’s a relationship of beneficial and utterly glamorous, reciprocity. n

Annabel Harrison explains why the fashion houses of Gucci, Mulberry, Reiss and Vivienne Westwood are standing the test of time “Fashion is always of the time in which you live. It is not something standing alone.” Few names are more synonymous with the world of fashion than Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel. She opened her first millinery shop in Paris 99 years ago, in 1912, and her influence has spanned a century, bequeathing the fashion industry the iconic linked double C, the enduringly stylish monochrome palette and the beloved, quilted Chanel 2.55 handbag. Just nine years after Coco set up shop, a young man named Guccio opened a small luggage store and leather goods company in his native Florence, with a vision for his brand inspired by London. This luxury brand, known globally as Gucci, is celebrating its 90th birthday this year and three British fashion houses are also celebrating anniversary milestones of 40 years: David Reiss’ eponymous company, propelled to worldwide recognition after being singled out as a favourite of Catherine Middleton; Mulberry, the Brit lifestyle brand most well known for its iconic Alexa and Bayswater bags; and Vivienne Westwood, the eccentric, colourful doyenne of punk, pirate and Anglomania fashion.

FIT FOR A PRINCESS In just 40 years, Reiss has grown from a single store in London to a global brand with more than 100 stores and just as much energy and drive as displayed in 1971. Founder David Reiss recognised a niche in the market for affordable, premium quality tailoring and opened the first Reiss store on Bishopsgate in the City of London. Since then, the iconic, directional and modern brand remains true to its design philosophy. The son of a City tailor, Reiss effectively capitalised on the worldwide power and potential of his brand name, as well as his sharp eye: “If I see something I like, I can immediately see the bigger picture.” Reiss has, over the years, continued to broaden its ever-widening design proposition; 2000 saw the launch of Reiss’ highly anticipated first womenswear collection and in 2005 global expansion was announced with the opening of the first of nine US stores. This expansion was given a royal boost in May when the Duchess of Cambridge pledged her allegiance to the British brand; just back from her honeymoon, Catherine wore a Reiss ‘Shola’ dress to meet Michelle Obama in London during the President’s official visit and the Reiss website promptly crashed due to phenomenal interest from the princess-loving public. Always sartorially savvy and equally keen to cater for the gentlemen, Reiss introduced a Personal Tailoring service last year, selling made-to-measure suits of Savile Row quality but with a cost from £550, just £100 more than its most expensive off-the-peg suit. David Reiss’ vision continues to propel Reiss forward and ensures that it expands, evolves and excites; there is no doubt that the next 40 years will result in as much growth and praise for Reiss as the past four decades have seen. www.reissonline.co.uk
In his younger days, Guccio Gucci worked in the Savoy Hotel for a time and while there he was inspired by London and the refined aesthetic of English nobility. Upon return to Italy, he set himself the task of match-making this sensibility with the craftsmanship skills of local artisans in Tuscany. Within years, word had spread about this equestrian-inspired collection of bags, trunks, gloves, shoes and belts. Innovation was high on the agenda and soon the scarcity of supplies during the dictatorship pushed this further, resulting in burnished cane being used as the handle of the Bamboo bag. This saddleshaped bag became the first of Gucci’s many iconic products and its popularity has endured. BAGS OF STYLE Inspired by the cool of the city and the craft of the countryside, Mulberry was established in 1971 and the brand has since carved a niche for itself as an idiosyncratically British luxury label. Roger Saul set up the company in Somerset with £500 he inherited on his 21st birthday and it went from strength to strength for three decades. A boardroom coup in 2002, when Saul was ousted, marks the beginning of the shift from respected, small-scale company to modern phenomenon. And this phenomenon is all about the bags. Over the past decade, the name Mulberry has become almost inseparable from fashion week front rows and outfit descriptions of the hoards of women toting its handbags; from young professionals to A-listers and leggy teens to stylish yummy mummies, there is no typical Mulberry bag owner. Everyone else wants one. A catwalk collaboration with Luella Bartley produced the Gisele bag, named after the Brazilian supermodel, which gave rise to the iconic, cult-status Bayswater and satchel-style Alexa. The ultimate stamp of fashion approval came with victory as Designer Brand of the Year at last year’s British Fashion Awards, beating Burberry and Victoria Beckham. Although designer handbags have historically been of Italian or French heritage, Mulberry is quintessentially English, through and through, right down to the practicality of including a shoulder strap with every bag and its support of British craftsmanship. In July, analysts reported Mulberry as the world’s bestperforming fashion retail stock over the past year. By the end of 2011, Mulberry will have more overseas stores than it does in the UK. ANGLO, PUNK AND ROCK ‘N’ ROLL If Kate Moss is the Queen and Kate Middleton the Princess, then Vivienne Westwood is the brilliant, ground-breaking Godmother of British fashion. It’s hard to imagine a London fashion scene without the eccentric, fieryhaired Dame stalking down the catwalk, dwarfed by six foot supermodels decked out in her creations. It all began in 1971 when Westwood and her partner Malcolm McLaren rebelled against the enduring hippie trend. Interested in music and memorabilia, biker boots and leather, they opened a shop at 430 Kings Road named Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die, branded with a skull and crossbones. Their provocative t-shirts, ‘rubberwear for the office’ slogan and DIY straps and zips aesthetic led to the media labelling the look Punk Rock. The Pirate Collection came next, marking Westwood and McLaren’s first catwalk show in 1981, followed by ‘the Pagan Years’, tweedy collections that parodied the upper class. The Pirates and Punk phases are testament to Westwood’s ability to kick-start trends that will span decades. Today, the pirate flag is still flying high thanks to high profile designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier and Alexander McQueen. Punk lives on in Balmain’s studded, leathery glory, emblazoned across Henry Holland’s t-shirts and girls like Alice Dellal, who dresses as though she’s stepped out of the 80s. Anglomania is a central thread of the brand’s success although Dame Vivienne firmly believes that fashion is a combination and exchange of ideas between France and England. “On the English side we have tailoring and an easy charm, on the French side that solidity of design and proportion that comes from never being satisfied because something can always be done to make it better, more refined.” Too cool to celebrate officially this year, we nonetheless salute the Dame for her outstanding contributions to fashion. n www.viviennewestwood.co.uk

Autumn’s Accessories designer Anya Hindmarch talks to Gabrielle Lane about this season’s stunning new designs

adapted version of one of her earliest and most cherished pieces which is both practical and stylish. “It’s such a timeless bag; I would choose it in the softest butter leather with a message from my children embossed in pale gold on the inside,” she explains. “I still love the way clothes, and in particular handbags, can make you feel, they change your mood, make you smile and empower you somehow.” Such enthusiasm, coupled with hard work and talent, has seen Anya Hindmarch open over fifty eponymous boutiques internationally, design for royalty and fashionistas alike and receive an MBE for services to the industry, as part of a career spanning over two decades. Accordingly, ahead of London Fashion Week, I was curious as to what advice she would give those looking to break into the industry. “(I would say) be determined and just keep going, there will be some hurdles along the way but stay focused on what you want to achieve. It is also helpful to find a mentor who can help and support if things get tricky,” she mused. The next project for Anya Hindmarch herself, is the launch of a charming diary, packed full of organisational sections and a directory of her favourite places in London which she enjoys visiting during her rare time off. These locations include unique places, such as Parliament Hill and the control room at Battersea Power Station. n

he Autumn/Winter bag collection from Anya Hindmarch is, by the designer’s own admission, a strong and directional new line. “The Autumn/Winter collection sees the evolution of SS11’s sense of luxurious functionality,” she tells me. “Our initial inspiration for the collection was the refined detailing on menswear, how it’s made and the feel and movement of fabrics. This led to the pulling apart and simplifying of constructions wherever possible, creating new clean lines which we fell in love with.” Ironically, while the new drop is indeed fresh and exciting, the inevitable popularity of pieces such as the ultra feminine lilac grey Maeve Clutch and the chic Maxi Zip Satchel is sure to transcend future seasons. Such options also reflect the various lifestyle needs which we all have. “I think a woman should always have a great day bag,” explains Anya. “Along with a sparkly clutch for evenings and a cross body style for weekends.” And with a busy schedule of her own, which incorporates creative work for her label and consultancy for brands such as British Airways and Vanity Fair, the designer confesses to generating some of her most successful concepts while on the go. “I have my best ideas while in the shower!” She reveals. “It is about the only time I have to myself without my Blackberry or my children! Many of my favourite designs have been created in those precious ten minutes. I always create my mental to-do list for the day so I am all ready and set up by the time I get to the office.” If she was to pick one bag to meet her own personal taste, Anya says she would choose a Bespoke Ebury, an

MISSONI The Brand The first Missoni label adorned a brightly coloured striped shirt dress in 1958, following the progression
Rosita Missoni personally oversaw the creation of an 18-floor property which would reflect its Eastern environs, selecting glittering gold touches to mirror the sands and blocks of vivid turquoise akin to the sea. These tones were combined with funky prints, soft furnishings and high-tech electronics to create a lovely retreat for the modern traveller with a welcoming and bright feel. The furniture includes over-sized urns in the lobby, which will feature in all of Missoni’s future hotels, as well as items which Rosita has in her own home, such as Howard J Wagner’s Wishbone Chair. One of her favourite aspects of the hotel is a terrace garden full of palm trees and cacti which serves to inject local nature into the otherwise urban and slick design and she chose to place a large restaurant at the heart of the hotel to represent the Italian kitchen. www.hotelmissoni.com

The concepts of quality and innovation have underpinned the fine jewellery of Bulgari, since its launch in 1884. VERSACE The Brand Gianni Versace grew up in Italy amidst the influences of antiquity, including art, sculpture and architecture; the Greek mythological figure of Medusa
with the contemporary and high-end Italian style of Bulgari. They did so by incorporating unique materials from the surrounding areas into each of the 59 villas while maintaining modern, clean lines and a chic colour palette. Refined bangkiray hardwood was chosen for the interiors along with natural lava and palimanan stones and woven fabrics. Local artists were also drafted in to decorate flatware, ceramics and other details to give the
property a cosy authenticity. At the highest point of the resort a Hindu Temple was constructed, which honours Balinese traditions but also serves as a deliberately magnificent focal point for the development. Speaking at the opening of The Bulgari Resort, the CEO said that the inventive nature of the project really captured the spirit of the brand.

The Resort ‘Palazzo’ is Italian for palace and the Palazzo Versace on the Gold Coast in Australia is an opulent development which combines design features from Europe’s most beautiful stately homes. Mosaics and gilt gold details honour the neoclassicism of post-Renaissance Europe, which inspired Austrian educated architect Soheil Abedian when he was striving for a serene yet lavish vibe. The similarities between the hotel and typical palace design are most evident in the huge foyer and impressive dining rooms which are fit for royalty, but the accommodation is also structured into left and right wings as such as residence would be. Evidence of Gianni Vesace’s theatrical passion is captured in photographs displayed throughout the property. n

There are few hotels as legendary as Claridge’s for interior splendour. I am often asked what a neurosurgeon does, and people are usually surprised by the answer. Most of us do specialise in brain tumours, head and spine injuries, and brain haemorrhages, but our remit extends far beyond that. Neurosurgeons are involved whenever a nerve is involved, and nerves are present throughout the entire body. Many of us do as much spine surgery as brain surgery. We look after back and neck pain, but also pain in the arms or legs caused by trapped nerves in the back or neck. Many are familiar with sciatica: pain in the leg from a nerve trapped in the back. There is an equivalent arm pain caused by the same problem in the neck: brachalgia. I often see people whose shoulder pain turns out to be a neck problem - both can be treated by neurosurgeons, and often without resorting to surgery. Pain or numbness in the legs when walking can also be caused by nerve entrapment in the spine. Carpal tunnel syndrome, painful numbness in the hands, is another common nerve entrapment syndrome with which we deal. We also specialise in facial pain, a terrible burden for those afflicted but again neurosurgery can help. We deal with the abnormal flow of brain fluid, a problem called hydrocephalus; this can sometimes mimic

neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s, but can be treated with a relatively simple neurosurgical procedure. Some of these less known problems are more common than might be expected. An older friend of mine had a fall and broke her thumb. Every time she saw a doctor she complained of her headache, but the focus was always her thumb. After a few weeks a mutual friend rang me, our friend was no longer engaging. She was not just in pain, she seemed older, less involved. I spoke with her on the phone - she was struggling to get words out properly. I spoke with her GP and we admitted her to a local hospital. A scan confirmed a subdural haematoma, a slowly expanding blood clot caused by her original fall. This diagnosis was often mistaken for stroke or dementia before scanners were more available. It was a simple matter to let the blood out by making a small hole. She chose to have it done under a local anaesthetic. Afterwards, she was able to tell me of the moment when the pressure was let off, and she instantly felt herself returning to normal. Although this kind of surgery is routine to us, we never forget how strange and frightening it must be for our patients, nor do we ever fail to enjoy the results our patients can achieve.
Migraines are a misunderstood affliction and are much more than just a headache. - EXpress The addition of an ‘S’ to the badge on the boot of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage signifies enough changes to raise what was already a pretty fine car to something special, says Matthew Carter

I
n creating its new V8 Vantage S, Aston Martin has blessed its two-seat coupé with a whole host of improvements. There’s new suspension, bigger brakes, wheels and tyres and a new gearbox, while the engine has been breathed upon: Aston’s 4.7-litre V8 has more power – up to 430 bhp. It’s lighter, quicker and looks more aggressive. Such have been the improvements to quality and refinement that the interior is incredibly well insulated from the outside world; in fact, the only way to get the full sensation from the car’s soundtrack – the glorious deep bass growl from the V8 – is to drive with the window wide open, which is somewhat draughty. But you will. Such is the aural treat from the retuned V8 that you’ll be driving the new Vantage S with the window open come rain or shine. Whenever you take the V8 over and above 3,500 rpm, the howl from the exhaust is like having Robert Plant in full voice riding shotgun on every journey. Glorious. The sound encapsulates what Aston has done to the baby of the fleet to turn it into the S. It’s sharper, louder, more aggressive and more fun. As well as changes to the engine and its soundtrack – the latter helped by a new exhaust bypass valve map and revised silencer (which thankfully does little in the way of silencing) – the Vantage S has a new seven-speed automated manual transmission that Aston calls Sportshift II. Thanks to the extra gear – the previous transmission was a six speeder – the ratios are closer together for seamless and very rapid acceleration while the shifts themselves are 20 per cent quicker: a couple of flicks of the steering wheelmounted paddles is all it needs to get from zero to “bloodyhell-how-quick-am-I-going?” in a matter of moments. Or to put that more formally, it takes just 4.5 seconds to get to 62 mph from rest. This extra performance is matched by revisions to the chassis and running gear. The steering rack is quicker, the front discs are larger and there are new springs and dampers. The rear tyres – bespoke Bridgestones – are wider than before and there’s a new dynamic stability control system specifically tuned for the Vantage S. There are visual changes, too. Although all modern Aston Martins, frankly, look a little too similar, the V8 Vantage is perhaps the best looking of the lot. It’s aggressively handsome, punchy rather than svelte and perfectly proportioned. The S has been given a new aerodynamic splitter at the front beneath a larger air intake to feed the engine and the front brakes. There’s also a new rear bumper and wider side sills. Dynamically, says Aston, the Vantage S has been influenced by the Vantage GT4 racer. That might be stretching things a little, but there’s no denying the car is feels constrained and uncomfortable in the city, preferring the wide open roads of the countryside. Indeed, driving away from dealer Stratstone into the maelstrom of Park Lane, neither car nor driver was happy. Initially I elected to

use the transmission’s automatic setting so changing gear was one less thing to worry about as I familiarised myself with the car and negotiated the morning rush hour traffic. The ride in town is nothing to write home about, with some of the road imperfections jarring the cabin and, though I’ve not got huge feet, I found the large brake pedal a bit too close to the throttle. So in town, then, the Vantage S felt awkward but as we edged out towards the country via a stretch of threelane highway, things got better. A whole lot better. The first thing was to forget the automatic transmission setting and rely on the paddle shifts to change gear. The second was to punch the Sport setting which instantly sharpened things up. Sport speeds up gearshifts still further and gives a more aggressive throttle response. It also opens the exhaust to give more of that V8 howl, more of the time. All that’s missing is for the driver’s window to open automatically when Sport is engaged. After a few miles on a favourite stretch of empty B road, those first impressions were largely forgotten. The suspension changes make the Vantage S feel sharper than ever and yet also make the ride more compliant. This is one of those cars that feels more comfortable, more together, the faster it goes. The engine – which, let’s face it, is no slouch in the ordinary Vantage – is more potent still and the steering just superb. But perhaps the icing on the Vantage cake is the new gearbox, with a shift quality that’s second to none. After using the paddle shifters for the first time, the automatic setting was consigned to history. As a driver’s car, then, the Vantage S hits the spot. And it’s not bad for the passenger too. The interior is beautifully hand crafted with, in the test car, a rich piano-black finish to the woodwork. Even the steering wheel is a work of art, chunky and covered in grippy Alcantara suede, just like a racing car. The only negative comment concerns the satellite navigation, which is a couple of generations older than the best systems on the market today. Far from intuitive to use, it’s not worthy of a IN BRIEF car costing more than £100,000. Talking of money, that price tag CaR: pitches the Aston against some Aston Martin V8 Vantage S formidable opposition, including the PRICE: Porsche 911 Turbo. Matthew Carter falls head over heels for Evoque, the first ‘baby’ Range Rover
“I
’d advise you to wind the window up,” says the genial guide, resplendent in the cleanest hi-vis jacket I’ve ever seen. We’re stopped at the entrance to the disused Edge Hill railway tunnel running beneath the streets of one of the grottier parts of Liverpool. The tunnel was built in 1836, though the track has long been removed. What’s left is two kilometres of rutted pathway littered with industrial debris, muddy in parts and with a bonnet-high lake at the far end to wade through. It’s dark: no sunlight has made it through here in almost two centuries and goodness knows what’s dripping through the structure from above. “All I know is that it’s brown… that’s why I advise you keep your windows up,” says our man. That’s the sort of advice you heed. We’re here because it forms part of the test route devised to launch to new Range Rover Evoque to the press. Edge Hill tunnel is normally off-limits and no wheeled transport has been through it for decades but Land Rover is important around here – Evoque (it rhymes with Coke) is built at LR’s
plant in nearby Halewood – and gets what it wants (dinner last night was held in Liverpool Cathedral, one of the more surreal ‘restaurants’ I’ve ever been to). Testing though it is, there’s no doubting the new Evoque will make it through this bizarre piece of urban off-road terrain. After all, we spent the previous day driving from Anglesey’s airstrip (home to one William Wales and his new missus) and driven on- and off-road across vast swathes of North Wales to get to the ‘Pool. Based as it is on the hugely capable Land Rover Freelander, there was never any worry that the gullies, slippery tracks, muddy hills and forest pathways would stop the sophisticated, electronically controlled four-wheel drive chassis. Evoque is blessed with Land Rover Terrain Response. You just dial in the surface ahead – be it mud, wet grass, sand or rocks – and the electronics work out the ideal drivetrain settings. You also get Hill Descent Control which uses the ABS and engine braking to inch you down steep inclines; the driver need do nothing other than steer. But the thing is, in real life Evoque is as likely to see a dirt track as the Beckhams

are to go on a camping holiday, and the Beckham reference is relevant, as we’ll see in a moment. Evoque was far more at home in (and under) Liverpool. The clue lies in the badge. This is a Range Rover and not a Land Rover. Although just as capable as any four-wheel drive from the company, it majors on style and comfort more than its ability to get down and dirty. And it does the job. Everywhere we went in Liverpool (and we went to some strange places – the tunnel was followed by a run through a water splash in the Albert Docks in the centre of town), it turned heads. Much of this is down to its concept car looks. There are two versions of Evoque, a five-door and a rakish three-door that Land Rover likes to call a Coupé, no doubt to justify the extra £1,000 it’s asking for two fewer doors. But it’s this Coupé version that really does the business. Little changed from the LRX concept car of a few years back, this is a film star of a car. The exterior is a wonderful mix of rugged and sophisticated with the roofline swooping down at the rear to the point where it almost meets the rising waistline; the rear window is more of a letterbox. That dramatic roof line grabs a fair amount of headroom in the rear, though the rear seats have been cleverly sculpted so that adults will fit; mind you, getting there though the tiny slot behind the folded front seat takes a degree of flexibility that not everyone over the age of 16 may still possess. Once inside, though, the cabin is spectacular. The driving position is 4x4 high yet still manages to feel low and sporty. In part that’s down to the rakish centre console, the hooded dash instruments, the circular auto gear selector and, if you’re prepared to pay a little extra, the sports seats which wouldn’t look out of place in a racing car. The materials used are first class and the fit and finish is as good as anything from Audi or BMW but then this is a Range Rover, after all. And there’s plenty of opportunity to personalise the interior. There are three interior ‘themes’ – Pure, Dynamic and Prestige – and there are others to come, including one created by Victoria Beckham; let’s just hope she doesn’t go the Footballers’ Wives route. There’s substance as well as style. We’ve already seen how good it is off-road, but it’s even better on-road. On the motorways, the 190bhp diesel is quiet, refined and punchy while the ride, especially with the optional MagneRide which uses electrically charged magnets in the dampers to simulate the ride comfort expected from an air suspension system, really works. Evoque handles well, too. There’s precious little body roll and it feels more like a hot hatch than a 4x4: it’s no wonder Land Rover is targeting owners of cars like the Audi TT. And yet those chunky wheel and tyres and the greater ground clearance mean Evoque handles speed bumps and city potholes with aplomb. In fact, the only thing I can find wrong with the thing is the price. You’ll see adverts claiming prices start at £28,000, which doesn’t sound too bad except that’s for the basic-spec two-wheel drive version. The well-equipped Dynamic SD4 (the 190bhp one with 20 inch alloys, Xenon lamps, Sat Nav, rear parking camera and so on) starts at damn near £40k. And that’s before you’ve so much as looked at the option list (though the full length glass panoramic roof is a bargain at £460). It’s a lot for a four-cylinder diesel. But judging by the bulging order books and the long waiting lists Land Rover knows exactly what it’s doing with Evoque. I want one. n

In PursuIt of Glory Twenty of the world’s top rugby nations will descend on New Zealand this month to compete for the sport’s biggest prize. Richard Brown met three England players hoping to be named in Martin Johnson’s 30 man World Cup squad
M
emories of the last Rugby World Cup final will sit particularly poignantly in the mind of Mark Cueto. Four years ago, he was the man who carried the ball – along with the hopes of a nation – over the South African try line only to have his dreams dashed when the match’s television official deemed his leg to have entered touch before the ball was grounded. That judgment may still remain a topic of debate. What’s not in question is the fact that seven matches against the world’s toughest rugby nations stand in the way of England claiming their second Rugby World Cup. Joining Cueto in the hope of repeating the scenes of jubilation that greeted the final whistle of the 2003 final will be rugby league-turned-union international Shontayne Hape and England newbie Tom Wood. Last month, I travelled to the team’s state-of-the-art Surrey training ground to talk to the trio about their pre-tournament preparation and the teams to look out for in New Zealand. What will prove key to England’s success at the Rugby World Cup? Mark Cueto: It’s an old sporting cliché but taking every game as it comes. We mustn’t look too far ahead. Always look after the next game and the bigger picture will fall into place. From the start, every game is massive. Shontayne Hape: It’s about having the belief. Every team that’s heading out to New Zealand is going there to compete. We have to build on the performances we put together during the Autumn tests and the 6 Nations. The last time we won the World Cup was in a year that we had won the Grand Slam.
This year we’ve won the 6 Nations so we’re on the right path. Tom Wood: Preparation is always the key and ours has been pretty intense. We’ve been doing a lot of rugby-specific training rather than just lifting weights. There’s been a strong element of wrestling and grappling. It’s also about focus. It’s different to a one-off test match, where you turn up on the day, perform and that’s the end of it. We’ve got to stay at the top of our game for a long period of time. Mental focus is going to be crucial. Which teams are to be most feared? TW: Fear’s the wrong word. The toughest team to play at a World Cup is perhaps France – and I guess that’s a potential quarterfinal for us. We can beat France comfortably on any given day but they are always capable of pulling out a big performance. When they’re on fire, they are hard to stop. SH: Having made it to the final on the last two occasions, there will be a lot of expectation on England. Of course you’ve got the world number ones playing on home soil, then there’s Australia and South Africa who are always superb. We recently saw how Samoa upset the Wallabies so there’s also a lot of underrated talent out there. MC: New Zealand will be favourites; there will be a huge amount of support for them. That said, whoever you play is going to provide a challenge. Romania, for example, will be considered underdogs, but even against teams like that, there are plenty of opportunities where it can all go wrong. Which other ‘underdogs’ should we look out for? MC: No one saw Samoa’s recent big win against Australia coming and Argentina have a huge amount of quality. They

are a tough, hard working group of guys who will die for each other. TW: You almost write off teams like Georgia and Romania, but in terms of physicality, teams like that really test you. Often what you will see is that the fitness and professionalism of the more established teams comes through to win the game, but it can be an absolute dog fight. Wales haven’t been at their best for a while but we know they’ve got quality players. Ireland has a group of big name players who may only have one last big tournament in them. It will mean a lot to those guys. SH: In the run up to a World Cup you can only worry about your own preparations. Argentina are up first and are a strong team. That’s who we have to concentrate on beating. After that, we take it from there. How has the squad bonded in the run up to leaving for New Zealand? MC: We’re quite lucky; we’ve been together, generally, for the last 18 months. From that point of view, we’re as settled as any England team I’ve ever been in, on the field and off. It’s not a case of having to do a huge amount of teambuilding; most of the guys know each other pretty well. TW: We’ve been for meals out and we’ve had a few social events together. You forge a bond just by being in this camp. How do you prepare the night before a big game? MC: I’ve got loads [of rituals]. I’ve always been an OCD/ superstitious sort of guy. You start with two or three when you’re 19 or 20 and by the time you’ve played as long as I have, you’ve picked up quirks along the way. There are things like shaving the day of games and sitting in a specific seat in the coach on the way to matches. I make sure I’m the last one out of the changing room, things like that. TW: I’m bad at getting anxious and getting overly up for it too early. I have to focus on reigning myself in and making sure I peak during the game and not before. SH: These will be the biggest games of my career so the night before I just have to stay as relaxed as I can. I try to chill out, listen to music, that sort of thing.

friends, the buddies next to you. It’s the moment before battle, the adrenaline’s pumping, you just want to get out there and do the best that you can. How much support do the England fans provide? SH: They’re immense, at Twickenham especially. Playing France during the 6 Nations was a massive game for us. I remember there were 80,000 fans singing Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. When you’re tired and your lungs are busted and you feel like you have nothing else to give, you hear the scream of the fans and it gives you that extra bit of adrenaline. TW: When you’re in the heat of it and you hear the roar go up as someone makes a break, or scores a try, that’s the moment you step back, take it all in and realise exactly what environment you’re in. The New Zealand Prime Minister described you as ‘a bunch of wannabes’ and Jonah Lomu called you ‘imitators’ when it was announced you would be sporting the black away kit in the opening game. What’s your response? MC: It’s a kit. England bring out a new kit every year. It makes no difference if it’s black, white, red, blue or purple. TW: Water off a duck’s back. It’s got a rose on it. It’s an England kit. The 2012 Olympic Games take place in London next year. If you could compete in and win any event, what would it be? MC: It would have to be the 100 metre final wouldn’t it? That’s the grand finale, that’s the one people talk about. SH: It would be quite nice to beat Usain Bolt! TW: Everyone wants to be crowned the fastest man or woman in the world but I’d like to win one of the less popular ones, archery maybe. I used to think of myself as a little Robin Hood as a kid. SH: Archery?! He’s on another planet. IndulGenCe Timothy Barber visits Soneva Kiri, the resort on the Thai island of Koh Kood that is to luxury retreats what the Abramovich superyacht is to parochial sailing boats
O
f all the irresistible things you’d hope to experience on an idyllic island – gorgeous beaches, exotic food, kaleidoscopic sea life, picture-perfect sunsets – you’d be forgiven for leaving gourmet chocolate off the list. Yet, at the heart of Soneva Kiri sits a walk-in temple to that most irresistible of foodie vices. In a refrigerated glass room with views over bamboo walkways and the quiet bay beyond, where discrete villas fringe the water and a long jetty reaches out over the pristine surf, you find tray after tray of chocolate delicacies: macaroons, mousses, truffles, chocolate slabs, fondants, fondues, pralines, chilled chocolate drinks – all created by the resident Italian chocolatier and all to be gorged on, for free, as and when you please. It’s worth picking up on this, because Soneva Kiri is run by Six Senses, an ultra-luxe brand best known for its spa retreats – and, indeed, the spa at Soneva Kiri, with its
isolated treatment huts, raised walkways and atmosphere of a serene Chinese garden, is world class. But the fact that Soneva Kiri is as much the perfect holiday destination for the Augustus Gloops of this world as it is for those who like their chi balanced is testament to the level of absurdly enjoyable indulgence on offer here. This isn’t just about pampering – you can spoil yourself any way you choose. The first grand indulgence is the manner of your arrival. Koh Kood is a tiny, jungle-covered island lying just off the Cambodian border in the Gulf of Thailand – which is to say, it’s a world away from the tourist-centric islands clustered around Phuket on the country’s western peninsula. To reach it, board a one-engine aircraft from Bangkok airport for a picturesque 45-minute flight to an islet just big enough to host an airstrip; from there, you’re whipped across the waves in a fantastically stylish speedboat to Soneva Kiri’s jetty. At which point two interesting things happen. A sign

introduces you to the resort’s ethos – “no shoes, no news” – and you’re asked to turn your watch back an hour. Soneva Kiri, you see, keeps to its own time zone. Ostensibly, it’s to take advantage of the daylight hours but the sensation of switching off real life and jumping into a sealed, otherworldly Eden – one where all the fruit is there to be picked liberally and at will – could hardly be greater. Elsewhere on the island, there’s the odd backpackerfriendly hotel but don’t expect to encounter any scruffy gap year students looking for the next Full Moon party. It is an enclosed community, with its own network of roads (joy of joys, you’re given your own golf buggy to get around the place) which link its villas, restaurants, beach, spa and other areas. As you rattle down its lanes, the staff – who considerably outnumber the guests – stop, smile and bow as a matter of course, hands pressed together in the traditional Thai manner. There are three “Soneva” resorts – the other two are in the Maldives. The word comes from a melding of Six Senses founder Sonu Shivdasani’s name and that of his wife Eva, and it represents the top tier of the company’s offering. This means more space, larger accommodation, fewer fellow guests and service of the absolutely-no-request-is-too-difficult variety. Want to head out fishing in a traditional Thai boat? Done. Zip off in a speedboat for some snorkelling and diving? No problem. Go for a private picnic on a distant beach decorated with coral? Very well. Take a plane over Cambodia to see the legendary temples of Angkor Wat? Even that can be arranged, courtesy of the Soneva Kiri private plane. And the villas are, indeed, massive, and very beautiful. My one-bedroom accommodation included its own courtyard with outdoor bath, plus a separate dressing room, bathroom and two showers (one outdoor) – and that’s just on the top level. A spiral staircase led down to a sizeable private pool surrounded by a large deck area with loungers and sofas; follow more stairs back up and you arrive at the open-air ‘living room’. I counted nine different sofa areas in which to sit and admire the views out over the bay. Sleeping with the blinds open, I’d wake up bathed in golden light as the sun rose at the end of the bed (which is vast, naturally). The larger, family-sized villas can sleep several, for those who want to bring nannies, butlers, boxing coaches (this has happened, apparently), grandparents and children. Your little darlings might even end up with a waterslide leading straight from their room to the pool below and if that doesn’t keep them occupied, the remarkable kids’ club – an avant-garde bamboo den resembling a giant, twisted

wicker basket – provides all manner of supervised activities. This means adults can get on with the not so onerous activity of pure, unbridled escapism. Soneva Kiri beach is a humdinger – it’s not huge but it’s perfectly formed, a gentle sandy strip, overhung with palms, and shallow, turquoise waters. With the resort’s low numbers of guests – there are presently just 38 villas – you’re unlikely to find yourself struggling for access to a sun-lounger. The beach is the most remote area of the resort, and you take your buggy along a road that winds through the jungle to reach it, passing the cinema along the way. Cinema? Why, yes – overlooking a lake, for romantic, outdoor screenings every Wednesday night. Fabulous food is everywhere at Soneva Kiri – don’t even think about trying to lose weight here. There’s luminously beautiful sushi down at the beach, and a gourmet restaurant called The View occupies the resort’s highest point, with a rather fine cocktail bar. At the resort’s main hub, by the jetty where you arrive, a large structure of winding wooden walkways includes the main restaurant – put in your own requests for grilled fish and meats, while the buffets of every kind of Asian delicacy are things of wonder. This complex sauce is traditionally served with steak and was created in the 1940s by Café de Paris in Geneva. To this day the ingredients of the sauce remain a closely guarded trade secret. lthough the sun is now shining through my wine shop window, it is with some certainty that I anticipate it may well not be shining for you by the time you read this. So, with autumnal chills moving in, I thought it good karma to share with you my top places from which to enjoy the last drops of summer, and suggest some gorgeous drops to enjoy them with. Why not take an afternoon sup on an English sparkling wine and enjoy the ongoing celebrations that, in recent years, have seen UK fizz trumping the French and garnering numerous awards. Pick up a bottle of Nyetimber Classic Cuvee 2006 at Jeroboams on Heath Street in Hampstead (they promise me they’ll keep some chilled) and bring it for a stroll up Parliament Hill. But please don’t forget the necessary glassware! No matter what your views on the effects of glassware on taste, I think we can all agree that, sometimes, a plastic cup just won’t do. So, kick back with the gorgeous views of our fair city and enjoy the fine, fresh, toasted, honeyed sublimeness of the Nyetimber. Add a summery selection of cheeses and strawberries for ultimate indulgence. If a French friend looks upon your choice with some disdain, just point out where the champagne method was originally invented - England. Sacré bleu! As afternoon turns to evening make your way back into town to my native Gaucho in Hampstead. Should this beautiful day, per chance, be a Sunday you’ll be privy to the full theatre of an Argentine asado on our terrace; a fire and meat inferno of the highest decree. Cool down from all this heat with a glass of Argentina’s answer to maximum refreshment with their national white variety, Torrontés; and in particular the Seleccion ‘G’ Torrontés 2010. Beautifully aromatic with all the florals of elderflower that will leave you reminiscing about a meadow in springtime, it’s perfect terrace drinking and heavenly with our ceviche spoons of salmon, scallops and lemon sole. Should your preferred form of imbibing come in a pint glass, then try The Garden Gate in South End Green, for a fine selection of guest ales and a busy, vibrant terrace. Just a spittoon away from the Heath, this place makes for welcome post-walk refreshment. Get down early though, as Sundays get busy and the BBQ gathers a formidable queue.
