Offering the best of outdoor life, yet only four miles from central London, Hampstead Heath is the gem of North West London and this is one jewel of which its residents are fiercely proud
T
aking its name from the sprawling green space that starts with Parliament Hill and stretches all the way back to Kenwood House and beyond, Hampstead Heath is an institution and the pride of North West London. Rambling and hilly, spanning nearly 800 acres, the Heath is much less manicured than its Primrose Hill sister, or its royal cousin, Regent’s Park, and because of this, it retains a wild, woodland charm. With ponds, lidos, wooded areas, bridges, open green spaces, a stately home and
unparalleled views across London, the Heath is a vast, green playground for young and old, a captivating part of Hampstead’s history, and a wonderful place to live. The Heath is a Local Nature Reserve and considered an important refuge for wildlife, including muntjac deer, grass snakes, foxes, rabbits, slow worms, squirrels, terrapins and frogs. Common kingfishers, jackdaws, ring-necked parakeets, pipistrelles and Daubenton’s bats are commonly seen over the Heath’s numerous ponds. The surrounding roads and the central village part of South End
Green that make up Hampstead Heath comprise a high percentage of impressive terraced mansion blocks, now converted into large flats, many with views across the Heath. The central village in South End Green, which is stoically attempting to resist invasion from the onslaught of chain stores and eateries, offers a wealth of unique, independent shops and restaurants, giving it an undeniable village feel.
Parliament Hill Hampstead Heath is neatly bookended by Kenwood House at its most northerly point and Parliament Hill
other landmarks. The view is so striking, and so unusual in its capacity to show you the whole spectrum of London landmarks in one view that it is protected by law, preventing extensive building, especially tower blocks and high rises, in the local area. Local respect for the view and hill itself is high, with organisations such as the Heath and Hampstead Society (www.heathandhampsteadsociety.org. uk) battling since 1897 to protect the green spaces of the Heath. At New Year crowds gather at the top of the hill for an informal celebration and to watch the firework displays across London at midnight – the show from the London Eye is clearly visible – as well as lighting Chinese lanterns and setting off their own fireworks. Throughout the year Parliament Hill is popular with sport enthusiasts, who make use of the athletics track, tennis courts, playground and the Parliament Hill Lido. The Lido is an unheated pool, open 12 months of the year, though only for a limited time during winter
months; it is owned and operated by the Corporation of London, which also owns the whole of Hampstead Heath. The Lido was opened on 20 August 1938 and at the time served as an important part of the community, with a diving stage, cafe and areas for sunbathing and spectators. The building is now Grade II listed, and several changes have been made over the years, including removing all the diving boards for safety reasons, providing hot showers, cycle racks and a paddling pool.
Hampstead and Highgate Ponds Swimming areas are plentiful on Hampstead Heath, with over 25 ponds in total for swimming, boating, fishing and wildlife. In the summer, families can be found enjoying both the lido and the popular Highgate and Hampstead Ponds. Highgate Ponds, on the eastern side of the Heath, are a series of reservoirs, which were originally dug in the 17th

in the south. It officially became part of the Heath in 1888, when it was bought for the people and added to the rest of the land. Its modern day incarnation sees it still as a fairly wild space, with a few large trees, and a playground and athletics track at the bottom of the hill. It is very popular with kite flyers, many of whom can be seen whiling away a windy Sunday afternoon atop the hill, clinging desperately to a soaring kite. Known as Traitors Hill for several centuries, the Hill received its current name in the 17th century because it was defended by troops loyal to the English Parliament during the English Civil War. Parliament Hill is renowned for having one of the best views in London. From the top of the 98 metre hill you can see the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf and the City of London, the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral, the BT Tower, the London Eye, St Pancras station and the Emirates Stadium, as well as numerous

Romantic breaks for film lovers
This stunning hotel in Buckinghamshire hit the nation’s hearts when dastardly Daniel Cleaver took Bridget Jones on a mini-break one infamous weekend. The elegant Pennsylvania Suite’s four-poster bed was immortalised in the minds of romantics everywhere, as Bridget snoozed among egyptian cotton sheets, while the hotel’s impressive grounds made a beautiful backdrop to a spot of some rather comedic messing about in a boat. In fact, as you walk around the beautiful hotel, memories of the film are everywhere, from the sweeping marble staircase that leads up to the bedrooms, to the rolling golf courses and plush suites. And there’s lots more to offer too, not least through the special Valentines package the hotel is running throughout February, which includes a night’s accommodation, as well as bath oils from the spa, a bottle of champagne and a luxury dinner in the hotel’s fine dining restaurant.
We arrived on a bitterly cold day, just as the snow was starting to fall. The warmth of the opulent Pennsylvania Suite welcomed us in from the elements with a roaring open fire, a bottle of champagne and a plush sofa to collapse into. The adjacent marble bathroom was a revelation, with the kind of deep bath you can disappear into, a powerful shower, dressing table and ample space. We energised ourselves with a sandwich and cool glass of white wine in The Orangery, and then headed out for a snowy walk across the beautiful grounds, taking in the sweeping greens of the golf course and the frosty trees, before heading to the hotel’s renowned spa. SPC at Stoke Park – as the spa is known – is one of the best things about the hotel. With the kind of high-end urban chic you’d expect from a London spa, this awardwinning place includes a hair salon, beauty rooms, pool, saunas, tennis courts, gym and a beauty shop that sells the SPC product range, as well as other beauty essentials and luxury items. Located in the newly built Pavilion building, which also houses some of the hotel’s more modern bedrooms and suites, the spa really is an oasis. Relaxing
in the deep, warm pool, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the fading light and falling snow was a special moment. We then enjoyed the most divine massage in their luxurious treatment rooms – warm, deeply relaxing and soothing. A perfect way to wind down over the weekend. Then it was back to our suite, still warm and cosy. We cracked open the champagne, remarked on the generous balcony attached to our room – an added summertime bonus – and relaxed in front of the fire. Dinner was a romantic, intimate affair in the fine dining restaurant – a three-course menu with the little extras that you would expect from this level of dining, and an impressive wine list. The next morning, I languished in the divine bath with some soothing bath oils, courtesy of the SPC spa. We then ordered our breakfast, a lavish display of pastries, bagels, tea, coffee, smoked salmon, juice, eggs and other hot dishes – all served from the comfort of our own suite. The hotel has become famous not just for Bridget Jones, but also as a key location in the Guy Ritchie film, Layer Cake, as well as the scene of a crucial game of golf in Goldfinger, and later in Tomorrow Never Dies. It has also featured in romantic comedies Wimbledon, Bride and Prejudice and the 1945 classic, Dead of the Night. Stoke Park is a hotel of the old order, classic and plush; it retains its heritage with a mix of country charm and luxury chic – and makes a perfect option for some ‘reel’ romance this Valentine’s Day. The Valentines 2011 Package at Stoke Park costs from £232 per person, includes one night’s accommodation, special three-course Valentine dinner in the Dining Room, full English breakfast, one gift box of bath oils per couple, a bottle of chilled Champagne and complimentary use of the spa. It is valid for 11, 12, 13 and 14 of February 2011 www.stokeparkclub.com

February
from the editor... February has arrived, and the long, dark month of January is finally behind us. As the first tentative signs of Spring start to show, what better way to appreciate it than by taking a long walk across Hampstead Heath? One of the largest green spaces in London, and certainly one of the oldest, it offers a real country feel, right in the middle of London. Find out everything you need to know about the Heath in our Spotlight feature (p.12). The New Year often brings resolutions about the ‘new you’, promises to finally get fit, get healthy, to do those things you’ve always been meaning to do. For healer Seka Nikolic, this time of year brings numerous patients looking for a solution to their various aches and pains. Find out how she channels the body’s energy to help her clients on p.10. Good intentions and resolutions continue on p.36, where Matthew Carter tries out the greenest Porsche around, the Cayenne S Hybrid, while Lee Brooks channels positive vibes as he considers England’s chances in this month’s Six Nations championship – the final test before the Rugby World Cup in September (p.42). Love is undeniably in the air this month, and our Valentine’s specials offer some sensational ideas for creating the perfect romantic atmosphere at home (p.61), unique ideas for presents (p.52),
and stunning luxury watches for the man in your life (p.20), as well as showcasing some of the best British hotels that have featured in romantic comedies. Treat yourself to a bit of silver screen romance on p.48. The romantic theme continues with our Trend feature on bedrooms this month; create peaceful havens with clean lines, classic design and soft pastel tones (p.26). We also have a special focus on up and coming designer Georgia Horton, whose stunning, bespoke wallpapers graced our romance-themed cover this month (p.29). In our Property pages we travel to France to take a first look at some of the new chateaus available in the divine Languedoc region – where ownership of a house or apartment also comes with a chance to make your own wine (p.74). We also feature a stunning apartment in Primrose Hill, designed by German creative visionaries Felder Felder (p.86). Hoping you enjoy some serious pampering this month,

Hampstead resident Seka Nikolic is a bio-energy practitioner, with countless celebrities on her client list. She speaks to Emma Mills about discovering her unique gift, dealing with sceptics and life in North West London
interview
T
elling people you are a bio-energy practitioner – someone who heals people’s ailments by channelling their body’s energies – is often likely to get a raised eyebrow or two, even from the most polite person. From the less discreet, you might even expect outright disbelief. It would take the most stoic of sceptics then, to accept Seka’s incredible story about how she first discovered her gift. “I didn’t set out to be a bioenergy healer. In fact, I discovered I had the skills needed when I was working in a marketing job in my hometown of Sarajevo. I was talking to a colleague in a wheelchair one day, when I got an uncontrollable urge to place my hands on his shoulders. He was bewildered to say the least, and I was experiencing a lot of pain. When I eventually felt able to lift my hands, he stood up out of his wheelchair and walked.” Far fetched it might sound, and yet Seka’s healing abilities were later tested and evaluated by the scientific Institute for Bio-Energy Research in Milan – renowned as one of the world’s most active research institutes investigating energy phenomena. Seka has now been working for over 20 years in the UK and, with clients such as Greg Rusedski, Joely Richardson and Vanessa Redgrave on her books as regulars, it seems that she does indeed have a gift. That said, she is realistic about how the treatment might be perceived. “I will always have sceptics in this field. It’s normal for people to question this kind of thing. I was very sceptical
I love living here, so when the opportunity came up to work here too, I jumped at it.
about it when it first happened to me. But after somebody has had a treatment and experienced the benefits, they are no longer sceptical, so it hasn’t ever been a big problem. In the medical profession I was recognised by BUPA in the 1990’s for M.E treatment, and I get patient referrals from doctors and GP’s every day.” Bio-energy treatment rebalances energy frequencies in the body, which, when you are unwell, are off balance. Seka passes her hands over a patient’s body, and then feels hot pain, which diagnoses problem areas – anything from back pain or eczema to more serious internal or organ problems. She specialises in the areas of ME, and has had great results with MS as well. She also works with couples that have fertility problems, as well as treating physical injuries, skin disorders, depression, asthma and emotional problems. During the treatment, one hand feeds positive energy into the patient, which revitalises the impaired cells, while the other hand extracts the negative energy, thereby balancing the energy level. This leads to the restoration of the patient’s good health. After each treatment, the negative energy is cleansed from Seka’s body by a brief flicking of her wrists. Typical sessions last 30 minutes; Seka does a quick scan of the body, and then works on the specific areas that she feels need energy most. Often clients experience quite strange sensations like hot or cold tingling, but this differs according to each condition. The work is obviously demanding, and Seka sees clients throughout the day, from 8.30 am to 6.00 pm, five days a week. “I treat anything from colds to cancer, from adults to babies. I work five days a week and take long lunchtimes to recharge myself in the middle of the day. I often have lunch and a walk on Hampstead Heath.” As careers go, it’s certainly rewarding, and very different from Seka’s original marketing role in Sarajevo. “Seeing people regain their health after years of illness is always a rewarding experience. And helping babies into the world through my fertility work is always exciting. Seeing people’s happiness when they get their life and energy back – those are the best bits.” But it must also have been challenging at times? “Yes. It
feature
can be very hard hearing the impact ill health has had on people’s lives when the medical profession can’t help. It was also very challenging in the early stages, when I was unclear and confused about my gift. I had no one to help me or explain what was happening to me. Sometimes I just wished I had dreamt it and it would all go away. The press in my country was quite invasive and people just seemed to want me to help them and their ailments, rather than offer me help through this whirlwind life change. I overcame the fear and initial panic by learning about my gift as much as possible.” Having a new career path forced on you must be a very strange experience, but for Seka, it has meant a whole new way of looking at the world. “I had never had any idea or ambition to heal until my first healing experience. But it really opened my eyes to the power of what we can all do to help ourselves. In my country, natural and herbal remedies are more widely accepted, so on some level maybe I was more open to it than I realised.” Seka says that growing up in Sarajevo was a positive experience, which set her up with a good family basis for her move to England. “I had a normal life as a child, and my family are close. Moving to London was definitely an eye-opener though, especially as when I first arrived here I couldn’t speak any English!” Seka has lived in Hampstead since arriving in London, and has recently moved her practice to Hampstead as well. “It’s such a lovely area with a great energy and sense of community. I love going to Kenwood House or the local family-run Italian across the road from my office for lunch. And I take time out with a good nosy in the shops on the high street.” Location has also helped with her clientele – the open-minded ethos of North West London providing a solid client base to build her business from. That said, she hasn’t had to work hard to stay busy, despite the unique nature of what she does. “People seem to find me mostly through word of mouth. My celebrity clients are actors, musicians, sportspeople, models – so I guess these people seem more open to trying new things. And, if you regain someone’s health, they tend not to forget and tell everyone they know!” n

and 18th centuries, and now include two single-sex swimming pools. Mixed pools can be found further south west, nearer Gospel Oak and South End Green; these are known as the Hampstead Ponds. Many of the ponds have been on the Heath since the 18th century and are considered an important part of its history. In 2004 the City of London Corporation tried to close the ponds on the grounds that they were an unsustainable expense and posed a health risk to swimmers. The swimmers challenged this and won in the High Court. To defray costs, the Corporation now charges £2 for swimming. n
Did you know...? • Legend states that Parliament Hill was the site where Guy Fawkes planned to watch the destruction of Parliament in the Gunpowder Plot on 5 November 1605. • According to local legend, Queen Boadicea was buried at Boudicca’s Mound, near the present bathing pond for men, after she and 10,000 Iceni warriors were defeated at Battle Bridge. • Until the 1940s, livestock was reared on Parliament Hill to be sold through Smithfields meat market. • Hampstead Heath was featured on the television programme Seven Natural Wonders as one of the wonders of the London area, with a focus on Parliament Hill to the south. The episode was presented by Bill Oddie, who lives in nearby Gospel Oak, and watches birds there regularly. • Hampstead Heath has its own constabulary, comprising 12 constables, four with trained general purpose police dogs, which have been responsible for patrolling the Heath 24 hours a day since 1992.

Love Leather Winter 2010 saw the opening of British luxury womenswear brand, DESA, in Hampstead, as well as their flagship store in St Martin’s Courtyard, Covent Garden. Since the opening, the shops have gone from strength to strength, selling a brand that has combined traditional values of craftsmanship with quality and design for more than 35 years. From their leather heritage, the brand has evolved to include an extensive line of luxury ready-to-wear handbags, small leather goods and shoes for women. From their beginnings in 1972, they have employed skilled craftsmen and artisans to realise their vision of combining tradition, quality and premium
materials with a modern fashion edge, aiming it at the brand-savvy 30-45-year-old women. Now with 70 stores outside the UK and plans for more London stores underway for 2011, as well as plans in the pipeline to open in New York and Paris, it is simple to see why DESA’s collections are so popular. With a mix of innovative artist blends, and modern luxury from signature leather and suede, DESA combines finely detailed and sophisticated pieces in luxury fabrics that appeal to a wide range of women. A little peek in the friendly boutique is a must when shopping in Hampstead.
The difference between style and fashion is quality.

Offering an amazing selection of everyday, special occasion and downright eccentric hosiery, this is the definitive tights site. Born from the founder’s dislike of buying tights – “it was either budget packs from the supermarket, which lasted no time and felt horrible, or the horrors of a department store where everything looked the same and instructions might just as well have been written in Chinese,” – MyTights.com offers good quality, good value tights. With exquisite designs from the Scottish twosome Bebaroque, and crazy prints from Celeste Stein, MyTights.com stocks everything you could possibly want to wear on your legs.

PLANTS TO GROW UP IN 2011 Plants will grow up this year, say horticulturists. With the popularity of gardening increasing and the availability of space on the slide, urban gardeners are set to find solutions in ‘vertical gardens.’ Climbing plants, such as clematis, honeysuckle and wisteria, are quick growing and cling to walls and buildings to provide privacy, screen eyesores, and draw the eye upward to create the illusion of space. As well as insulating buildings and providing habitat for wildlife, vertical gardens can be used to provide a pleasing contrast to a concrete-heavy environment.

B
rought up in Southern Africa, where she later worked with traditional and fashion textiles, Georgia Horton initially trained in Italy as a fine artist. There she studied the intricacies and disciplines of museum catalogue drawing, architectural restoration, fresco and trompe l’oeil, all of which have influenced her subsequent works. In 2009, Georgia turned her attention from murals to wallpapers, and reflecting her background as an artist, her approach is illustrative and unique. Worlds apart from mass-produced rolls, her specialist wallpapers are printed in short runs. This allows the option of customised colourways, opening the door for customers to use the designs in a variety of ways.
Adopting this very traditional and highly skilled method of producing wallpaper pays dividends; the quality and detail of her designs is top notch. Themes of light and texture, symmetry and spatial illusion unite in The One Collection. Designed on a large scale, the patterns all originate from nature, from the twig nests that sparked “Mikada” to the whispering glade of “Pavilion Palm” and the witty formality of “Lobster Quadrille.” There are nine patterns available in a range of colourways, from sympathetic neutrals to highly dramatic dark shades and metallics. Alternatively, all the designs can be custom coloured to order. n www.georgiahorton.com

treatment of the month: Thermal Teeth Whitening
Want an instant, pain-free Hollywood smile? Then the latest procedure in teeth whitening will help you achieve the perfect smile. The Thermal Diffuser is a new whitening system that The London Centre for Cosmetic Dentistry has
introduced. Dr Mervyn Druian (co-founder of the practice) found that the Thermal Diffuser was the most effective whitening treatment to hit the UK, and it’s fast, taking only 30 minutes. With just three ten minute cycles, a patient’s teeth can be swiftly and safely whitened, giving results that are not only dramatic, but long lasting. The treatment has three revolutionary new concepts that make the process fast, effective and pain-free. The first is the Thermal Diffuser whitening gel, which contains a purer form of hydrogen peroxide that means a faster and more efficient reaction, as well as containing a patent-pending organic activator that reacts with the hydrogen peroxide, triggering the release of the active ingredients at more than ten times the normal rate. The Thermal Diffuser also uses the most technologically advanced, tooth-whitening light on the market, which, with its gentle warmth, is proving to be the most effective and comfortable for the patient, vastly reducing the sensitivity – definitely something to smile about. 020 7722 1235 www.londoncosmeticdentistry.co.uk

Through the keyhole Professor Ernest Schilders talks to us about the developments in hip surgery, and how technical advances mean better results than ever before
Keyhole surgery to the hip is rapidly changing the treatment of hip pain in young adults. Technical advances, alongside a better understanding of hip problems in young adults, have enabled surgeons to treat patients with keyhole (arthroscopic) surgery. Previously, options were limited to physiotherapy and open surgery. Often the patient was told they would have to live a more sedentary life. However, as this case study shows, hip arthroscopy can help athletes to return to their sporting activities, whatever the level they are performing at. Chrissie Havis is an advanced dressage rider, trainer and judge in her early 30s. She started riding aged 2½ and represented Great Britain as a junior (under 18) and young rider (under 25). Dressage is an Olympic equestrian discipline. Because of the size of some dressage horses, width of the dressage saddle and nature of the discipline (horse’s movements are absorbed continually through the rider’s body, unlike other equestrian sports), the hips are placed under particular stress. Moreover, the rider’s hips are continuously in an extended and abducted position and training is usually for several hours per day. Throughout 2007, Ms Havis started to experience increasing pain in her hip, which did not respond to physiotherapy. She was seen by a surgeon and keyhole surgery was performed, during which the hip was debrided (cleaned out). Her symptoms subsided, but then recurred within a few weeks of returning to riding. She saw multiple surgeons who had different opinions. One surgeon even
32
recommended open surgery with cutting and resetting of the thigh bone. Chrissie was subsequently referred to Professor Ernest Schilders, who specialises in complex keyhole surgery of the hip, and was diagnosed as having a combination of bony and soft-tissue problems in the hip (femoroacetabular impingement, plus labral tear). She had surgery to treat the bony abnormalities, and had a soft-tissue reconstruction followed by a course of intensive postoperative rehabilitation. Chrissie made a full recovery and returned to International Dressage; she recently obtained a Bronze at a Senior Home International in October 2010. Femoroacetabular impingement or hip impingement is a newly recognised condition, where the hip rubs or impinges due to bony abnormalities on either side of the hip joint. This is often associated with damage to the cartilage soft-tissue in and around the hip. The impingement process and the secondary damage can be seen and treated with reconstructive keyhole surgery. Professor Ernest Schilders is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at The London Hip Arthroscopy Centre at The Wellington Hospital. To arrange an appointment with Professor Schilders or The London Hip Arthroscopy Centre at The Wellington Hospital, please contact The Enquiry Helpline on 0207 483 5148 or visit www.thewellingtonhospital.com
Professor Ernest Schilders and The London Hip Arthroscopy centre The Wellington Hospital is delighted to announce the arrival of Professor Ernest Schilders, who specialises in hip arthroscopy and groin injuries. Professor Schilders is recognised as one of the leading hip arthroscopists in the country and is currently conducting several large studies in FAI with longterm research focusing on adductor problems in athletes. Professor Schilders trained as an orthopaedic surgeon in Belgium and the United States. He started his professional career at the University Hospital in Antwerp and has been appointed as a consultant in Bradford Teaching Hospitals since 1999, and more recently in 2008 was appointed as visiting Professor in Sports Medicine at Leeds Metropolitan University. He has lectured internationally about these topics and has published in peer-reviewed journals.

hen given the brief to design and build a luxury electric supercar in the high-margin, lower volume Grand Tourer segment, the Lightning Car Company came up with the Lightning GT. What they also did was produce the world’s first truly super electric supercar. Driven by a German-sourced powertrain with twin inboard-mounted electric motors, the Lightning GT delivers 400 BHP and accelerates from 0–60mph in under five seconds. It has a top speed of 125mph and, thanks to advanced 44kWh Lithium Titanate
batteries, has a touring range of over 150 miles. Being 100 per cent electrically powered, the car offers a whole new driving experience in the form of instantaneous response, smooth acceleration and lack of engine noise. Whilst competing comfortably with petrol supercars, the Lightning GT causes no tailpipe emissions and can be powered on a domestic power supply at the approximate cost of 2.2 pence per mile. When they begin rolling out the Lightning GT in 2012, the Lightning Car Company will become the first new British luxury car marque for 60 years. n

THE CAR
for all seasons
Snow? Bring it on, says Matthew Carter… but then he has just spent time behind the wheel of the sure-footed Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid, the greenest Porsche of them all
S
o the weather forecast got it right for once. Expect snow, it said, and that’s just what we got – by the lorry load. Just before Christmas, London turned white and the roads were treacherous. In the old PC days, the last car you wanted in conditions like those was a Porsche. Actually, that’s not quite true. Give me a frozen lake somewhere up near the Arctic Circle and the keys to a tailhappy 911, and I’m in heaven. That’s where the Porsche winter driving experience takes place, and powering a Porsche sideways out of a bend with nothing to hit except a (comparatively) soft snow bank is pure driving pleasure. But icy roads in the city, with errant cars and taxis slipping and sliding around, not to mention bollards and other street furniture to get in the way, is another story. Or it was. The ‘PC’ mentioned earlier stands for pre-Cayenne. On days like these, a Porsche Cayenne is absolutely the right car for these conditions and, as the snow settled, that’s just what was sitting outside the house. Serendipity or what?
When it was launched back in 2003, many Porsche aficionados dismissed this 4x4 SUV as a jumped-up Volkswagen, conveniently forgetting that the very first Porsche was a go-faster VW Beetle. Why, there was even a diesel version – heresy for a sports car brand. It is true that without the VW Touareg, the Cayenne wouldn’t exist. But if Porsche listened to the purists the company wouldn’t exist today. The fact is that the Cayenne is one of the most successful Porsches of all time. It looks sufficiently different from the VW and, thanks to some clever engineering, it appeals to a different audience. In keeping with the Porsche badge, it’s more overtly sporting and luxurious than the more workaday VW. And Porsche has even managed to make a large 4x4 acceptable in the city (just). The car outside covered in snow was a petrol electric hybrid. In normal use, all four wheels are powered by a potent, supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine punching out 333 hp. But tucked away under the body is a parallel electric motor, adding a further 47 hp to the mix, bringing the total up to 380 hp.
motoring
That provides the sort of power and performance you might expect from a gas guzzling V8, but with better fuel economy and lower emissions: Porsche claims 34.5mpg on the combined cycle and 193 g/km of CO2. In everyday use, expect nearer 28 mpg: still not bad for a car with this performance. Like most performance hybrids, the Cayenne’s electric motor is primarily there to boost top-end performance, but it is possible to run the car in electric mode alone. In fact, it becomes something of a game to see how far you can make it go in electric mode, and it certainly livens up traffic jams. There’s a series of complex displays on the dashboard that let you know when the battery is being regenerated by the petrol engine, when it is boosting overall power and when it’s operating alone. Porsche reckons it can cover ‘short’ distances at speeds of up to 37 mph as an EV. I never got it going that fast in electric mode, but if by short distances they mean a few hundred yards, that I did achieve. The only downside of city use, is the slightly jerky transition between electric and petrol power. You learn to overcome it to a degree, but it’s never quite eliminated. More significant is what Porsche calls ‘sailing’ mode. You’re powering along a motorway and once your desired cruising speed is reached, you ease off the throttle. At this point the petrol engine is switched off, and the resulting reduction in mechanical drag helps cut fuel consumption. OK, it’s a long way from a zero emission saver of the environment, but it’s a start. In other respects, the S Hybrid is a typical Cayenne. It’s recently been given a new look, with the front end much closer to the appearance of the current 911. It’s longer than before, though doesn’t look it, and has lost a bit of weight on the way, though the Hybrid pack soon puts it back on. The interior manages to combine a sporting attitude with a luxurious feel, though – as ever with a German car – to get the base model up to spec involves a severe bashing of the bank account.
calibre
The S Hybrid spec gets you a leather interior, an eightspeed auto ‘box, parking sensors, powered front seats, 18-inch alloys and a standard tracking system, should the car get nicked. But if you want decent bi-xenon lights, satnav, an upgraded interior or need to plug your iPod in, it’s all extra. Even Bluetooth connectivity for the phone is an extra: the test car had around £13,000 worth of options but still lacked heated seats, which would have been a boon in the snowy weather. Ah, the snowy weather: that’s where the Cayenne came into its own. Despite the icy roads and despite the large (optional 21-inch wheels) performance tyres, the Cayenne had ample grip. And when the snow went, it performed like a thoroughbred should, handling like a sports car, albeit a tall one. So, should you buy the Hybrid over the diesel, and is it better than the equivalent VW? The diesel is a little cheaper but perhaps a little less refined on the go. The Hybrid, however, is an intriguing machine and the petrol engine is one of the best. It makes a glorious noise when pressed and delivers its power in one creamy smooth punch. You pays your money and takes your choice. The answer to the second part of the question is simple, though – it’s different: both are great cars, but a Porsche is a Porsche. And that’s enough for most. n

Depth charge How big should a 3D television be? Having tried out all kinds of screens ourselves, we know one thing: ideally it should be bigger than Sony’s 40LX903. Forty inches in size makes it easy to house at home, and maybe you’ve got a house where anything bigger just won’t work, but for a true 3D centrepiece, the bigger the screen the better because 3D is all about immersion. And that’s tricky if there’s a plant pot next to your 40-inch TV, or the cat walks behind it. Next question: do I need a 3D TV? The answer is no, not yet. Unless you’re a huge fan of Open Season, Monster House or Ice Age 3! 3D TV doesn’t have much for you … yet. And that’s the key. If you’re buying a new TV, you probably plan to keep it for at least three years, possibly five. Seven years is average and the planet’s e-waste dumps are glad of that. And by 2013–14, we have no doubt that there will be a lot of 3D content out there – and we’re talking live TV and live action movies, as well as 3D games. The 40LX903 makes for a good investment in the future. Part of Sony’s ‘Signature’ range, there’s not much this Edge LED-backlit screen can’t do. Away from its 3D capabilities, it can stream BBC iPlayer, Demand Five and YouTube (though sadly not wirelessly, unless you buy a USB dongle), and has a built-in Freeview HD tuner (for BBC One HD, ITV 1 HD, BBC HD and 4HD). 3D without glasses is still a decade or so away,
so for now, we have the active-shutter 3D system, which is partially hamstrung by rather heavy, uncomfortable (and circa £100) glasses that sync with a sensor on the TV. Two pairs are included with the 40LX903, which is relatively generous. Strap a 3D Blu-ray player (in this case we used Sony’s 3D-ready BDP-S470) to the 40LX903 and insert a 3D Blu-ray disc for bright and breezy 3D pictures, though we noticed a lot of flicker and intense, headache-inducing blur around moving objects. It may have a 200Hz mode to speed-up the LCD panel, but it’s not quick enough – and certainly not as impressive as Panasonic’s VT20 plasmas. Our main problem, though, is that the glasses restrict how you look at the screen; bolt upright is the only way. Further up the ‘Signature’ range is the delectable 60LX903 which, at 60-inches in diameter, hosts a much more convincing 3D experience – as its £4,499 price tag suggests.

Only One Trophy With the 2011 Rugby World Cup fast approaching, Lee Brooks previews this month’s Six Nations tournament, which represents coach’s Martin Johnson’s final chance to tinker with his England squad
W
hile our boys suffered abject failure on the football pitch out in South Africa last year, there’s been more positive news between the posts for England’s rugby team in the last 18 months. While Martin Johnson’s men aren’t quite dominating the world like they did when he was a player nearly ten years ago, progress is being made. That’s just as well, because 2011 is World Cup year, and having reached the final of the last two four-yearly tournaments (Fabio Capello take note), winning in 2003, England have a real chance of replicating that form this September in New Zealand. But before that all kicks off, there’s the small matter of the Six Nations, one of the oldest and most prestigious tournaments in the world, which this year takes on extra significance, as it provides the final chance for northern hemisphere sides to tinker with their sides before the World Cup. Back in 1871, England and Scotland played the first rugby union international and after a series of friendlies against Ireland and Wales, the Home Internationals competition was set up, comprising the four teams. The annual tournament then evolved into the Five Nations when France joined the fray in 1910, before arriving in its current guise in 2000 with the addition of Italy. The format is simple. Each team plays each other once, with two points for a win, one for a draw and nothing for a loss. Should any team remain unbeaten, they win the grand slam and bragging rights, as well as the title. The six-week tournament kicks off on 4 February with the final round of games taking place on 19 March, giving the European nations six months to prepare without any competition rugby. That’s in contrast to those in the southern hemisphere who have their equivalent – the Tri-Nations – one month before, which is sure to give them an advantage. Ordinarily, the defending Six Nations champions would enter the following tournament with a good chance of retaining it, but this time around, France is struggling for form. Though they dominated last year’s tournament, the opposition was below par and the final match against England was a particularly weak affair. Thereafter, Les Bleus went on to concede 16 tries in their next five Tests with heavy losses to South Africa, Australia and even Argentina, and looked like a side in all sorts of bother.
Instead, the England team enters the tournament as favourite. That’s quite a turnaround from 12 months ago when the boys in white stuttered to a fortunate second place in the group. England last won the Six Nations back in 2003, (incidentally the same year they last won the World Cup) so manager Martin Johnson will be keen to follow through on their favourite tag in the hope that history will repeat itself come the World Cup in September. The squad finally looks settled with youngsters in the form of Chris Ashton and Ben Youngs making a huge impact in the last six months. Similarly, their brand of attacking rugby, which so beautifully dismantled the Australians in their own backyard last summer, seems to be paying dividends. Ireland appears to be the Chelsea of international rugby. Two years ago, they had the world at their feet and a grand slam Six Nations title to boot. Fast forward to today, and Declan Kidney finds himself with an aging team the wrong side of 30. After a disappointing performance in last year’s competition, it’s difficult to see them making much of an impact this year. Joining the Irish in a worrying drop in form is Wales. The little nation won the grand slam in 2005 and then three years later in 2008, but has since gone on a horrific run of form, which has seen them rack up a winning record only marginally better than minnows Italy. Warren Gatland has a big job to do if he is to reinstall some belief in the side. They’ve got a tough opener against England in the tournament’s first match, but expect the dedicated Welsh fans to turn out in force at the Millennium Stadium to throw their weight behind the boys in red. The dark horse of this year’s competition is Scotland. The team in dark blue has made steady progress in the last year, losing just one of their last seven Tests. Andy Robinson’s men shocked world champions South Africa during the autumn internationals and, thanks to their strong scrum and a growing confidence, Scotland could end 20 years of hurt since their last triumph. Lastly, there’s Italy, a side who have competed in the tournament for ten years but failed to establish themselves as a contender, and usually battle Scotland for the wooden spoon. With the Scots looking like they’re going places, the Azzurri could find themselves at the bottom once more. n

THE SPIRIT OF HERITAGE
T The Dalmore pays tribute to the past with limited edition, Castle Leod
he Dalmore story begins in 1263 when an ancestor of Clan Mackenzie saved King Alexander III from being gored by a stag whilst out hunting. As a gesture of gratitude, the King granted him the right to bear a stag’s head in his coat of arms. This year, to honour the brand’s Scottish roots, The Dalmore is launching an exciting new limited edition single malt whisky, The Dalmore Castle Leod. By maturing the malt initially in American white oak and Spanish sherry wood, before
transferring it for a final 18 months to barriques in a legendary first cru classe Bordeaux chateau, The Dalmore have created a whisky of inimitable refinement. Richard Paterson, master distiller, describes the Castle Leod malt as “the joyful effervescence of fleshy plums, raisins and citrus fruits, followed by the silky tones of kiwi fruit, honey, caramelised pear and sweet mango”. Proceeds from the sale of this limited edition will go towards the much-needed restoration of Castle Leod, maintaining the legacy of one of the world’s most loved whiskies. n

A great British
romance
Some of the nation’s favourite romantic comedies have featured hotels and locations across the UK. Emma Mills visits some of the best places to enjoy some silver screen romance this Valentines Stoke Park Bridget Jones’ Diary This stunning hotel in Buckinghamshire hit the nation’s hearts when dastardly Daniel Cleaver took Bridget Jones on a mini-break one infamous weekend.

Best of the rest... The Victoria at Holkam Shakespeare in Love
At the end of Shakespeare in Love, Gwyneth Palthrow walks along an endless sandy beach, her hair floating in the wind. Those infamous golden sands make up the stunning Holkam Bay, part of the Holkam Hall estate, and the place where you’ll find the wonderful Victoria Hotel. Each room in this country hotel has been individually designed, taking inspiration from old colonial houses. Classic Moroccan and Indian textiles and furniture have been sourced from abroad, while a blend of antique and contemporary pieces is complemented by the modern comforts of Freeview televisions, big beds, sumptuous duvets and indulgent bathrooms, some with double-ended and roll-top baths. We stayed in The Wash, a large room with a gorgeous black slate bathroom, a huge bed and beautiful views across the Marshes. Dining at The Victoria is also an experience. The simple kitchen focuses on classic British food, sourced from local produce, cooked to a very high standard. Delicious shellfish and samphire from the north Norfolk coast, beef, lamb and
pork from the farms on the Holkham Estate, wild game shot on the estate, and venison from the Holkam herd of Fallow deer really adds to the local feel. The food was delicious, cooked well and served with a smile. Located just a few minutes from Holkam Beach, this hotel is the perfect place to get away for a reviving, and romantic, weekend. Take a walk along the golden sand dunes, before returning to the cosy bar at the hotel to enjoy a quiet pint of ale in front of the fire. Then retire to your bedroom to relax in the bath, looking out at the gorgeous view. The Victoria isn’t the height of luxury, but the hotel has a wholesome, simple honesty, and a warmth that is both endearing and romantic. It makes a great, alternative Valentines escape. The Crown Inn Four Weddings & a Funeral The central relationship in Four Weddings and a Funeral, between Charles and Carrie, is neatly progressed by each one of the four weddings. The night of their first romantic tryst was at the fictitious Lucky Boatman, which was in actual fact The Crown Inn, Amersham, which still houses the same four-poster bed used in the film. A unique hotel in the heart of this old market town, it exudes country charm, while maintaining a high-end luxury feel. Designed by Ilse Crawford, who was also responsible for Soho House New York, Cecconis, Grand Hotel Stockholm and more, the hotel has worked hard to reinvent the idea of the English inn. Rooms and public spaces are modern and fresh, with a heavy emphasis on style. Stay in the main inn in one of the Ilse Crawford rooms, which feature enormous beds, thick duvets, bold furniture, flashes of colour from bright red Roberts radios, as well as large, chic bathrooms with rainforest showers.

If you fancy treating your loved one to a bit of pampering, the hotel has partnered with The Lemon Rooms – a lovely beauty salon, offering a range of traditional and alternative beauty treatments. Food at the hotel is seasonal and local, and every meal is catered for here, from breakfast to dinner, including elevenses, afternoon tea and snacks. We loved coming in from a walk to a pot of fresh coffee and home-baked biscuits. Amersham is a gorgeous old town, and while staying there, why not also take a walk down the road to the Kings Arms, which formed the exterior of the hotel in the film. n The Crown Inn, 16 High Street, Amersham, Bucks , HP7 0DH 01494 721 541 www.thecrownamersham.com

Florence
Birth place of the Renaissance, and a city where romance and passion can be found in abundance, indulge in the delights of Florence Don’’t miss:
Music: The Food Of Love
Adapted from a fifteenth century monastery, with a façade reputedly designed by Michelangelo, the stunning Villa San Michele boasts spectacular views stretching over the Arno Valley, to the city of Florence. Located in Fiesole in Tuscany (but just 15 minutes from the centre of Florence with the free shuttle bus), the Villa is also famous for its cookery school. The school offers a series of great classes, from half day to longer two, three and even five day courses, with themes such as children’s cooking, cooking for one and healthy eating. Some even include wine tastings at local vineyards, or trips to discover the cuisine of local regions such as Chianti. Don’t miss A Symphony of Pasta, a three day course, with each day taken by a different chef from notable restaurants all over Italy, such as Cipriani in Venice. Another highlight, Italian Intermezzo works with the famous creator of this book of recipes matched to music, Sharon O’Connor, to explore the cultural and gastronomic beauty of Florence. www.villasanmichele.com

Shoppers’ Paradise
If shopping is your forte, whilst in Florence, it is worth veering away from the obvious choices. Sure, a stroll down Via Tornabouri opens up a plethora of high end options such as Gucci, Armani and Ferragamo. But come on people, we have those at home… Florence is also famous for the wealth of great quality artisan goods, many of which have been made using the same techniques, passed down from generation to generation for centuries. Head to Ponte Vecchio (Florence’s picturesque “old bridge”), lined by quaint, little jewellery shops, where gold and silversmiths have been make their fine creations since the sixteenth century. Via Maggio and the streets around the Oltrano district are also great for hunting out antiques and objet d’art, and for those keen to sniff out a bargain, the antiques flea market near Piazza Santa Croce is also not to be missed.
What to see::
Florence Syndrome
Florence is a city rich in art and culture, after all, it gave us the Renaissance and the dawn of the modern age. So much so, that there is actually a syndrome named after the dizzying heights of admiration and awe the art of this city is thought to induce. So explore, delve deep, but just don’t overdo it… Art lovers should make a pilgrimage to the Uffizi, a huge gallery housing a spectacular collection of Renaissance art by such veritable masters as da Vinci, Botticelli and Raphael. A Piece of Cake
Passionate about Champagne, French Bubbles founders, Maud Fierobe and Stefano Frigerio, wanted to develop a brand with a different and interesting standpoint that gave their business a certain ‘je ne sais quoi.’ Maud, a French native with strong roots in Champagne, and marketing expert husband Stefano, originally from Italy but who both now work and live in Kentish Town, wanted to bring access to authentic, fine quality Champagnes at great prices in the UK, whilst giving something back to local communities directly from the success of their business. The unique aspect about French Bubbles is that they are a boutique supplier of Grower Champagnes to the UK, that come directly from family-run vineyards in Champagne and are only available via their website. The Champagnes are not big names, but are produced to the highest quality by award-winning growers. With a passion for others benefiting from their business, French Bubbles also runs a Charity of the Month campaign, where £1 from every bottle sold during that month will go to that charity. As well as selling directly from their website, French Bubbles also provides bespoke events and tutored tastings, which are tailored to suit the individual client’s needs from both a corporate or private perspective. This month sees French Bubbles hosting a Champagne and Cheese tasting event at La Cave à Fromage in South Kensington on 10 February, in which guests will be able to match four premium Champagnes with a La Cave cheeseboard. Tickets are £40.

Pico de gallo In Mexican cuisine, pico de gallo, which means rooster’s beak in Spanish, is a fresh, uncooked condiment made from chopped tomato, onion, and sometimes chillies. Other ingredients may also be added, such as lemon or lime juice, fresh cilantro (coriander leaf), cucumber, radish or other fresh, firm, pulpy fruit such as mango. Pico de gallo can be used in much the same way as other Mexican salsas, or Indian chutneys, but since it contains less liquid, it can also be used as a main ingredient in dishes such as tacos and fajitas. One of the sources for the name ‘roosters beak’ Is said to come from the fact that originally it was eaten with the thumb and forefinger, and retrieving and eating the condiment resembled the actions of a pecking rooster.

A flair for the new Emma Mills dines at Samarqand in Marylebone, which brings central Asian cuisine to the fine dining world with serious style and aplomb
I
have to confess that of all world cuisines, Uzbek food is neither my favourite nor one I know much about. More fool me, it seems. Rich in breads and noodles, as well as sumptuously marinated cuts of meat, especially lamb and mutton, it gives a whole new meaning to ‘taste sensation’. Palov is the most traditional meal – a rice dish, cooked in pork and seasonal vegetables to add flavour. There are also kebabs, bread dumplings, spicy salads and variations on dips such as aubergine and chick pea. New restaurant Samarqand, in Marylebone, which opened at the end of last year, aims to make what has always been seen as provincial and uninspiring cuisine the new foodie trend. And it’s doing a good job so far. Located at the bottom of Marylebone High Street, surrounded by hotels and
other eateries, Samarqand is fairly unassuming from the outside, a sleek single doorway with glass doors, opened for us by a man in full Uzbek regalia. Descend down the stairs, though, and the place opens into a smart, chic space, with a cocktail bar at the far end, cocktail lounge to the left and a series of private spaces beyond. It’s small, but perfectly formed, and the décor is sharp and fresh. Think professional business dinner or a smart night out with friends. We kicked off the evening with a couple of sensational cocktails from the extensive, but not to the point of being overwhelming, menu – served with real precision by the bar staff. They were alcoholic enough to have a kick but unique enough to be drunk slowly. We enjoyed them in the lounge area, complete with a larger than life-size model of a horse that
connoisseur
actually turned out to be a standing lamp, serenely overseeing proceedings. Bizarre, but brilliant. Dinner called, and we moved into the dining area; long and rectangular but with enough width to give all the tables their own space, it was already humming with happy diners. We started with Aubergine Caviar, spicy aubergine and tomato salsa with red peppers and herbs (£7.50), and Lamb Cheburek, pan fried flat meat pasty with Asian spices and herbs served with homemade chilli sauce (£7.75). The aubergine caviar was a revelation, spicy as it should be with a definitive kick and enough unique flavours to keep us going back for more. The lamb was succulent and rich, the chilli sauce adding more welcome fire. We then shared a Chicken Shashlik, marinated diced chicken, charcoalgrilled and served with raw onion and chill relish (£14.50). This was a dryer dish but nonetheless full of flavor, the chicken was well-cooked and the pungent raw onion gave a nice kick. Kazan Kabob, stewed succulent lamb served with thyme rustic potatoes and baby spinach (£13.95) and Pelmeni Choochwara, steamed aromatic beef dumplings served with tadziki and chilli relish (£12.00) were our mains of choice and they were equally as good as what had gone before – rich with spices and flavour, and the meat was top quality. Size wise, it’s worth getting help from the waitresses about how much you need to order, as sizes tend to vary – it’s a bit more than tapas and less than a standard starter or main – despite this, we had a perfect amount of food. Dessert was a treat of rich honey cake with strong Green tea. The wine selection offered some solid choices to bring out the best in the food. Our Pinot Noir was pungent and rich, with enough depth to withstand the spice but enough subtlety to let the meat flavours through. And we loved the cucumber infused water on offer, an idea we adopted at home straightaway. As a really new cuisine to most of its customers, Samarqand has a bit of an education job to do with its clientele, but that’s where the fun is, and they do it well – gently walking you through central Asian cuisine with delicious dishes that offer something very new to the London food scene. n

Japanese Brunch
Jennifer Lewis swaps the traditional English breakfast for a more exciting Japanese brunch at ROKA in Canary Wharf
W
hen I heard that ROKA, famous for its exquisite Japanese robatayaki cuisine, had launched a Sunday brunch menu, I was more than a little intrigued. My normal approach to brunch is decidedly English so I was excited to explore what ROKA would offer my taste buds. Upon arrival, we were greeted by our ever diligent waiter Malik, who explained Roka’s new brunch concept: the sprawling sushi buffet table positioned temptingly close to us was unlimited, we were to choose two mains to share from their menu and then would be treated to a dessert platter, again to share. The brunch menu is “all about sharing”, he explained to us, clearly encouraging a relaxed Sunday morning atmosphere. The fine drinks menu was also unlimited – whether your drink of choice is a Bloody Mary or a glass of classic Champagne. The restaurant décor comprised various shades of natural wood, finished to give a contemporary yet warm feel to the dining experience. I started with a Cherry Blossom Bellini, a delightfully flavoured tipple, which slid down all too easily. For those who’d like a more wholesome drink, I recommend the Namakemono – a fresh concoction of raspberries, cucumber and apple juice. We began our feast with a trip to the buffet table, a beautifully laid out spread of sushi, sashimi and maki. I was a particular fan of the green tea noodles, while my companion enjoyed the ginger, coriander and basil red cabbage salad. When we returned to our table, we were pleasantly surprised to find a dish of baby squid with chilli and lime, which was soft and exquisitely cooked. It was tempting to overfill on the buffet but we held off in anticipation of our mains. We chose the menu’s hero dish ‘gindara no saikyo-yaki’ (‘black cod’) which did not disappoint. It was served fresh off the restaurant’s central Robata grill, wrapped in a magnolia leaf and marinated in their speciality yuzo miso sauce. It was cooked to absolute perfection: the white fish was so divinely soft it seemed to
melt in your mouth. This was finished off with a ginger stick to cleanse the palate. The second dish was the ‘kankoku fu kohitsuji’ (leg of lamb). The meat was succulent, nicely crisped and bursting with the flavour of the Korean spices. We ate it with simple sesame-seed-sprinkled sticky rice, which complimented the richness of the meat. We ate slowly, savouring the atmosphere of the now teeming restaurant. The Brunch menu, which has been running for just over two months, clearly has already won over a captive audience. Other diners ranged from couples enjoying a Sunday morning treat to groups of friends catching up and families enjoying a civilised morning out - with the added benefit of the children’s play area. The knowledgeable members of staff were always on hand to explain the intricacies of the food preparation or simply help a small girl with her chopsticks. By the time our dessert platter arrived we were nearing fullness but it was too much of a treat to pass up. The hot dark chocolate pudding was utterly delicious. It came with a crunchy top of Jivara chocolate (40 per cent cocoa chocolate infused with malt) to give it a velvety taste, branded artfully with the ROKA name, out of which, when pierced, the Maccha (green tea centre) oozed. It was accompanied with a pear ice cream and a selection of fresh fruits. Our Sunday morning banquet was finished off with fresh mint tea, right on cue to help settle our by now very satisfied stomachs. As we drank our tea, we realised that our morning had slipped nicely into the afternoon, so we left, now truly convinced that Brunch, the Japanese way, was indeed a marvellous way to end the weekend. n

For the first time since being exhibited in London at the Royal Academy and the Fine Art Society in 1938, Ben Uri brings the art of Ludwig Blum to the United Kingdom. The exhibition traces the career of the Czechborn Israeli topographical artist, who immigrated to Palestine in 1923 and settled in Jerusalem at the age of 32, showcasing his extraordinary use of changing light and shadow. Blum is recognised not only as a distinguished artist of the classic mould, but also as the finest topographical artist of his time. The exhibition of 35 works displays Blum’s consistent representation of ‘the real’ in painting the Holy Land. The Magic of
Languedoc
If the thought of venturing to warmer climates to invest has ever crossed your mind, then look no further than the truly magical Garrigae resorts scattered around the south of France in the delightful Languedoc region
W
hen reflecting on the South of France we automatically think of the wonderful St. Tropez or the super-chic Cannes; however, it seems that the secret of the still relatively undiscovered Languedoc region is about to be uncovered. Launched in 2003 with three operational developments already under their belt, Garrigae seems set to make their mark on the picturesque South of France; a dreamy location that has so much to offer visitors from all around the world and is fast becoming a fashionable tourist destination. The company created by Miguel Espada and his wife Cecile, both Languedoc natives, has the personal touch that larger companies are lacking. With their respective families being wine makers for
generations, it seemed only natural that their love of the vineyards and home-produced fine wine would be entwined in their passion for property. With a vision to provide a little piece of their enviable French lifestyle to investors and visitors alike, Garrigae set out to build and restore boutique developments that would remain authentic and classy, yet not pretentious. The charming Le Couvent de Herepian, a 17th century building that used to house nuns, has been beautifully and sympathetically restored by Garrigae to showcase the very best of French architecture and design. Set in a breathtaking countryside location, the 13 suites ooze glamour and sophistication, as well as fascinating charm – a perfect lovers’ retreat. By complete contrast, Port Rive Gauche, yet another luxury retreat and spa, offers uninterrupted
homes & property
views of the Mediterranean from its 11 über-chic contemporary two bedroom suites. Situated in the quaint village of Marseillan, its people make their living from the cultivation of oysters and the distillation of Noilly Pratt – a locally produced and rare authentic vermouth. Why not take a tour around the distillery and enjoy seeing first-hand how this famous beverage is made? The tranquillity of Les Jardins De Saint-Benoit, an extension of the village of Saint-Laurent-de-laCabrerisse, has its very own on-site vineyard, which owners have a share in, as well as a three-acre olive grove. One of Garrigae’s larger developments, this international resort offers outstanding facilities for families with children, as well as high-quality conference facilities. The on-site spa offers a full range of holistic treatments, as well as luxury facilities, including a pool and Jacuzzi. Travelling around the rest of the beautiful countryside and quaint villages of the Languedoc region, Garrigae has cherry picked another two sites to work their magic and share with the world a slice of their wonderful French lifestyle. My favourite by far has to be the 18th Century Chateau De La Redorte, tucked away in the Minervois. An authentic and untouched area of the Languedoc, the Chateau has been the residence of the d’Artois family for five generations, and with the resident Countess d’Artois’s full blessing, Garrigae is now ready to give this architectural masterpiece a new breath of life, restoring the Chateau back to its original beauty. Originally a wine-making estate, Garrigae have arranged a partnership with the Chateau and Franz Vénes, owner of Domaine Massamier La Mignarde, one of the most renowned wine estates in the Minervois region. Each owner will be able to participate in the wine-making process, both tasting and mixing the wine in the Chateau’s secret tunnel. As well as 11 luxury apartments within the Chateau itself, there will also be new outbuildings consisting of 12 duplex properties carefully constructed to lend themselves to the style of the Chateau, all located around a stunning swimming pool. Due for completion in early 2012 is Les Templiers, a 49-unit development located in the pretty medieval town of Pézenas, with its gorgeous cobbled streets and period architecture. Boasting mild winters and long summers, Pézenas would make the perfect retreat to buy that second home close to the Mediterranean. The Languedoc’s coastline is home to one of the longest Mediterranean beaches, stretching 220km along the sea. With its exceptional climate, stunning architecture and pure unspoilt beauty, this location really does offer excellent quality of life. The pace slows down as soon as your plane hits the tarmac, and being just over an hour away from the UK by plane, it makes your second home very close to home indeed. n www.garrigaeresorts.com

Lofty ideas The Henson is already a stylish pied-à-terre in a great urban location. Now, with an apartment designed by German designers Felder Felder, it’s giving a whole new meaning to loft conversions, says Jenny White
T
he beauty of London is that you can have it all. The liveliness and diversity of a busy city, with the quiet of green space and hidden corners of tranquillity; and nowhere else exudes this quality more than the vitality and energy of Camden, which runs into the subtle calm of Primrose Hill. These two boroughs offer those from all walks of life a place to create a home, while enjoying everything the capital has to offer. And one building, which perhaps reflects this contrast best, is the latest stunning development from leading London property developer, Londonewcastle. The Henson is a six-storey canalside building comprising 46 apartments, consisting of one, two and three bedroom properties, as well as a series of two and four bedroom penthouses, which all have roof terraces, and combines the very best of high-quality urban living with the character and warmth of a historical building. This substantial Victorian building was originally constructed as railway offices and latterly became the home of Jim Henson’s Muppet organisation,
Architects Tate Hindle sympathetically renovated the building, whilst enhancing and restoring the appearance of its historic façade, which fronts onto the Regents Canal. Part refurbishment, part new build, The Henson comprises high-quality, residential apartments and onsite affordable housing, together with B1 offices and design studios. When it came to the interiors, designer Tara Bernerd of Target Living took charge, keeping the style overtly warehouse, with features such as exposed brickwork, timber and pipes and polished concrete ceiling in selected apartments. For Tara, the key to the building’s brief was to capture the essence of Camden’s distinct style, combined with the character of the building. And at the centre of the property’s design is one of The Henson’s striking, luxury loft apartments, designed in collaboration with fashion brand Felder Felder. In keeping with Londonewcastle’s commitment to evolving a lifestyle-oriented residential offering, German-born designers Daniela and Annette Felder were appointed to translate their signature style into an original residential creation, featuring a number of
homes & property
bespoke pieces designed exclusively by Felder Felder for Londonewcastle. The rich history and legacy of The Henson building proved an inextricable source of inspiration to Felder Felder. With the rich punk heritage of Camden, and the more sophisticated and refined qualities of Primrose Hill, the location demanded homage to contrasts and playfulness. The result is a modern and sexy apartment, which is distinctly urban and has a clear Felder Felder imprint and aesthetic. As the focal point of the apartment, the living room space features a Felder Felder-designed couch, which is upholstered in the fire print featured in Felder Felder’s SS10 show collection, alongside a metal coffee table and a signature Felder Felder studded metal wall providing a dramatic backdrop. The communal space also features an original lighting feature – a Victorian fabric roll holder with a leather stud detail has been transformed into a standing light. The distinctive colour palette of distressed charcoals runs throughout the design, further adding to the ambient energy. In contrast to the industrial feel of the living room, the bedroom exudes an altogether more sensual and intimate feel. Classic Bordeaux colours permeate with a light installation of individual hanging bulbs, embellished curtains, cushions and mirrors designed by the duo. As art is central to the design of Londonewcastle and Felder Felder, the entrance room has been completely covered in artwork by David Packard, inspired by Felder Felder fashion images. Packard is known for using billboard posters removed from sites around London, re-pasting them, continually tearing, adding and removing layers, using other found images, text and paint to create textural surfaces. Additionally, original Felder Felder sketches provide further originality to the environment. Rob Soning, director of Londonewcastle says, “Londonewcastle is constantly looking to push the boundaries and encourage limitless creativity. This incredible building is home to a vibrant area and the dynamism of Felder Felder – and their own willingness to experiment – is a wonderful example of fashion fusing with interiors.” Stylish and unique, it is clear The Henson offers the complete living environment – a stylish home, as well as a desirable urban lifestyle – and there is no doubt that this is a place where people will love to live. n

Marsh & Parsons have been selling property in London since 1856, specialising in central and south west London. Now they’re moving to Little Venice. Emma Mills meets managing director, Peter Rollings
Peter Rollings
M
arsh & Parsons has been a part of the London property scene since 1856. It specialises in the selling and letting of quality properties in central and south west London, and has just announced its move to sought-after location, Little Venice, in North West London.
Managing director, Peter Rollings, says: “Whilst Marsh & Parsons has been established for over 150 years, the service we offer has moved with the times. We still believe in good old fashioned service - never forgetting that our job is to get the very best results for both our selling and letting clients. The Little Venice office will compliment our existing network of 14 branches, particularly our nearby North Kensington and Notting Hill offices, which have been selling and letting property in the Maida Vale and Kensal Rise areas for many years. We’ve invested close to a quarter of a million pounds in refurbishing the office and to celebrate the opening, we’re offering to sell our customers’ homes without charging them a penny in commission for the first three months of this year.” Marsh & Parsons has opened in Little Venice because of the location’s natural fit with its existing office network. Maida Vale’s property market is extremely popular, and the area is proving hugely attractive to both overseas buyers and tenants looking for easy access to the City and local international schools and the UK buyers wanting to move to such a great location. Marsh & Parsons has a unique way of selling and letting properties. Its ‘open register’ policy means that all properties for sale or let in any Marsh & Parsons office can be viewed, sold or let by any negotiator within the whole organisation. This leads to an excellent level of interaction between the offices and offers their clients great value. “When you instruct one Marsh & Parsons office, you instruct them all,” says Peter. The new Little Venice office – which is located moments from the Grand Union Canal and Warwick Avenue – will be run by sales manager, Natasha Greenwood and lettings manager Nik Dennis. Natasha and Nik have both been with Marsh & Parsons for five years, with Natasha working in the Notting Hill office and Nik working in the North Kensington branch. “Opening the
Little Venice branch is just the first step in our plans for growth and improvement in the coming year,” says Peter. “From a foundation of award-winning customer service and top quality facilities in our existing offices, we can push on with expanding the network in key areas of London in 2011 to take advantage of the revitalised prime market.” The opening of the 2,000 square foot branch follows Marsh & Parsons being named the Overall Winner of the 2010 UK Estate Agency of the Year Awards. Marsh & Parsons won the award on the strength of: “Its visionary and hands-on leadership, the second to none training programme, and its particularly impressive sales culture”. Marsh & Parsons also won the awards for ‘Best Medium Estate Agency in London’ and ‘Best Medium UK Estate Agency’. This new office will mean the company can build on this success as it develops throughout London. “I have always admired Maida Vale,” explains Peter. “It is midway between central and north London and enjoys the best of both worlds – magnificent elegant mansion blocks, secret gardens, beautiful architecture, it’s easy to find and easy to get to and with great communications, it is a compelling mix of positives.” n

Hamptons International, comments on

the current trends in the rental market
The New Year has certainly started with a bang, and some areas are already showing an increase in confidence. At Parkheath we have taken more new enquiries in January 2011 than in any single month throughout 2010. Instructions are up too. This January we agreed three times the number of sales agreed in January last year. So does this mean any uncertainty in the London property market is behind us? Well, that’s something I can’t predict, but working every day in the property market does give me a good view of developing trends. What is certain is that prime London areas will fare better than other parts of London in down times and always be the first to bounce back, usually stronger than ever. The key areas of Belsize Park, South Hampstead and West Hampstead are premier residential areas with a special relationship with City workers, and on the doorstep of some of the most desirable green spaces the capital has to offer. Nestled between, Regents Park, Primrose Hill and Hampstead Heath, yet a mere ten minute journey into town, the area is blessed with superb transport links into the City, Canary Wharf and the West End. Restaurants and shops range from awardwinning eateries and high end boutiques to charming markets, cafes and village stores and pubs. For all these reasons, Belsize Park and South and West Hampstead attracts affluent and knowledgeable buyers not only from the UK, but also from Europe, and Asia. In 2010, prime London house prices rose and more properties sold. This positive sentiment appears to be growing as confidence breeds confidence. An increase in properties coming to the market is still being outweighed by an ever increasing number of buyers. What will happen to prices? Parkheath forecast that in 2011 prime London areas such as Belsize Park and South and West Hampstead will continue to buck the trend of the rest of the UK and property prices will rise by 3-5%.
So, 2011 has started where 2010 finished, with demand for apartments and houses outstripping supply. We have seen demand for one bedroom apartments far exceed the current stock levels, leaving us with very few apartments available for less than £500 per week. This has lead to some properties going for in excess of the asking price. This demand has been boosted by our corporate partners relocating employees to London and new students joining the London Business School. If you have a one bedroom apartment to let, now would certainly be the time to benefit from the lack of supply. As we move into February, we are also seeing enquiries for family apartments increasing dramatically, following the customary seasonal break. We are working closely with our Corporate Services Department who are dealing with many blue chip companies and corporate relocation agents who are planning on relocating families to London in the first quarter of this year. We are seeing a record number of enquiries as the economy continues to recover and firms move more employees to where they are needed. The American School, Jubilee Line, Regents Park and the High Street all mean St John’s Wood is an area many families want to live in. We expect Little Venice and Maida Vale will benefit from this as well, due to the lack of apartments becoming available in prime St John’s Wood. We are finally starting to see various companies relocate employees to London in preparation for the Olympics in 2012 – the Jubilee Line makes St Johns Wood an ideal location. We have already housed several families over the past 18 months who have been involved with the construction of the Olympic Park, and as this nears completion we are now seeing many more clients heading to London in order to begin final preparations before summer 2012.
