here is something about the change in the air as summer gives way to autumn that always makes me feel refreshed and happy. Whether it’s the feeling of packing away your summer wardrobe and rediscovering much-loved cashmere dresses, leather boots and chunky knits from your winter items, or getting out thick blankets for your bed and eschewing salads and light bites in your recipe books for casseroles and soups – this time of change is, as they say, as good as a rest. Here at Vantage we’ve embraced change as well, with some new pages and a little reshuffle. Stretching our expert eye from Maida Vale to Highgate, and everywhere in between, we’ve handpicked the best in arts, culture, food, fashion, interiors and seasonal events to keep everyone in the family occupied, whether it’s a photography exhibition to commemorate Remembrance Day, campaigns for local Christmas lights, a folk festival, Christmas shopping evenings or our pick of highlights from the Jewish Film Festival. Check out our essential November diary on p. 11. There’s also a new dedicated section for family and children, showcasing some of the chicest children’s fashion boutiques we’ve ever seen, ideas for Halloween treats for little ones and an exclusive pet grooming service (p. 76). Also this month, in honour of the Constable exhibition which opened at Burgh House in October, Jack Watkins looks back at the painter’s life and his particular passion for Hampstead (p. 19), while the director of Little Venice Cake Company, Mich Turner, shares her own passion for the hidden gems of Maida Vale in our Address Book (p. 22). And for your regular dose of style with substance, Anouska Hempel talks to us about her inspiration and design dreams in our interiors pages (p. 53); the most elegant, luxurious looks from the catwalk translate into sharp tailoring and fashion that transcends the years on p.32; and our jewellery pages look back at some of the most iconic and beautiful gems from cinema history (p. 68).

In light of Remembrance Day, the Imperial War Museum is exhibiting former Hampstead resident Cecil Beaton’s war photography. Working for the Ministry of Information during WWII, Beaton’s lens captured the intensity of war across the world, but it’s his images of our capital that will resonate most. Enduringly haunting, Beaton’s catalogue timelessly confronts both the fearful enormity of world conflict and the personal tragedy of human loss. North west London will once again host the critically acclaimed and hugely anticipated annual UK Jewish Film Festival this month. Shown in venues across the area, including the Tricycle Theatre in Kilburn and Everyman Cinema in Hampstead, the festival is a showcase of works on Jewish themes by filmmakers from across the world. Vantage spoke with the festival’s managing director Michael Etherton about the cinematic treats in store. What can we expect from this year’s festival? A fantastic range of contemporary world cinema with over 70 hand-picked film premieres and previews from 20 countries. This includes award-winning drama, like the exclusive preview of ‘Lore’ by much feted Australian director Cate Shortland (Sat 10 Nov, 8.50pm, Tricycle); landmark films about iconic figures like ‘Roman Polanski: A Film Memoir’ (Sat 10 Nov, 6.15pm, Cine Lumiere); and cutting edge political documentary like ‘One Day After Peace’ (Sun 18 Nov, 11am, Everyman Hampstead). How can locals become involved in the UK Jewish Film Festival? There are opportunities to volunteer at the annual festival, which is a great way to get a flavour of what goes on behind the scenes at a major film festival, as well as Q&As after some screenings which are a great way for audiences to engage with directors, actors and others.

With summer over, many of us will miss leisurely afternoons at the weekend, spent al fresco with a glass of wine and some good food. Year on year these films are reaching out further into the British mainstream, which is a development that we welcome and encourage.

‘‘H

ere let me take my everlasting rest!” John Constable once exclaimed, delighting in the expansive views to be enjoyed from the blustery heights of Hampstead. And so it is that if you walk past the Georgian terraces of Church Row, the village’s most elegant street, turning left on entering the gates of St John’s churchyard and following the path to the rear wall, you come to the chest tomb in which he lies, alongside his beloved wife Maria, and seven of their children. On a sultry day in autumn, this is a tranquil spot, holding something of the slow and easy timelessness of the artist’s oil paintings. Constable, who usually favoured the human-scale, earthy landscape, rather than the untamed, sublime one, would have loved to have been alive on this afternoon, I think, amidst the crumbling old tombstones, a soft breeze rustling the leaves of the oak and horse chestnut trees, and faroff voices from the surrounding streets drifting over the graveyard wall. There’s an appropriateness about the rather secretive location of the grave, too, (although an information plaque near the porch informs his identity. visitors of its whereabouts), because The fact is that Constable’s Hampstead connection Constable’s painstaking is a story that is relatively untold. methods required him to Trees at Ham pstead, 1820 © Victoria an d Albert Museu A series of events and forsake Suffolk for the hub of m, London exhibitions at Burgh House the art world. He’d always taken to heart Benjamin West’s stricture to remember that light and shadow never stand still, but in Hampstead he began the process of ‘skying’– the sketching of the sky and the effects of clouds and light, annotated with date, time, wind speed and direction, and the actual weather conditions occurring. A Hampstead friend ordered one of Constable’s local paintings because he said he, “could feel the wind blowing on his face,” and it’s fair to say that the Heath depicted in these paintings is a wilder place than the one you experience today. The sheep who grazed it, keeping the vegetation down, were taken off after WW2, and the views have closed in as trees have proliferated. In Constable’s time, there was more gorse, and the landscape was scarred with sandpits. Sand-digging had been carried out here for centuries and the horses and carts of the labourers who so fascinated Constable feature in many of his pictures. Many visitors to the Burgh House exhibition might fancy adding a little coda by seeking out the sites in the area with a Constable association. It’s easily done. Number 40 Well Walk, just a few doors down from Burgh House, was where Constable lived between 1827 and 1834, happily writing to a friend that “our little drawing room commands a view unsurpassed in Europe.” On Downshire Hill, Number 25 was another former residence, but most interesting is the open space between Judges Walk and Branch Hill, where Constable would come to scan far-flung views. Again trees and shrubs have grown up around what was once a wide open space, but the huge grassy hollow you see here was one of the largest sand pits on the Heath, with the pond – now dried out – the Branch Hill Pond of his paintings. Constable once wrote to John Dunthorpe, an amateur artist whom he’d accompanied on painting expeditions in the East Bergholt countryside in earlier years, that “this fine weather almost makes me melancholy; it recalls so forcibly every scene we have visited and drawn together. I love every stile and stump and every lane in the village, so deep rooted are early impressions.” But if nothing could have replaced the fields of home in his affections, it’s a happy thought that on his rambles around of Hampstead, he gained a leavening of compensation. n Constable: 200 years in Hampstead runs until 7 April 2013, www.burghhouse.org.uk The Grove, or Admiral’s House, Hampstead, 1821 © Victoria and Albert Museum, London

I have lived in Little Venice for over 15 years and now have my studio in Marylebone. I love Regent’s Park, the village feel, palatial architecture, Regent’s Canal, the accessibility to the West End and the tree-lined avenues.

OUt & ABOUt I used to run regularly in Regent’s Park, even on my wedding day. Where else in London can you run and see camels?

LUNCH I rarely get time to indulge in either lunch or dinner, but when I do stop for lunch I am a big fan of the memorable, decadent Lobster Club sandwich at The Connaught.

DINNER A firm favourite I do enjoy for dinner is La Petite Maison, near Bond Street.

A HIDDEN GEM The George Bar inside Durrants Hotel has a separate entrance and is so small, quirky and inviting. Best of all, I can just about see it from our studio so can arrive as the gin and tonics are being poured!

STYLE update STITCH BY STITCH Upon his retirement four years ago, designer Valentino Garavani – needing only his first name for his vision of glamorous couture, said: “I stopped because in the ‘fashion world’ I had done almost everything.” He wasn’t wrong, and testament to his gilded legacy is an exhibition which kicks off on 29 November at Somerset House where gowns for Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Grace Kelly and Sophia Loren could almost lose their distinction, if only for the beauty of the 130 other creations against which they are set. The installation has been curated exclusively for London and it may be your only chance to see personal videos and samples from behind the scenes at the secretive atelier. The 12 piece range serves as the first time Williamson has turned footwear creative, having previously relied upon the talents of Charlotte Olympia, Laurence Decade and Manolo Blahnik when accessorising his colourful clothes. Runway O regalia Gabrielle Lane speaks to West Hampstead based jewellery curator Susan Caplan about choosing accessories for the Issa S/S13 show

ne of the most anticipated shows of London Fashion Week was that of Issa S/S13, Daniella Helayel’s glamorous love letter to an Edenlike Brazil. For such a show, the glossy make-up artistry was entrusted to Val Garland and the chunky gold accessories, West Hampstead’s celebrated vintage jewellery curator, Susan Caplan. “Issa approached me to help its looks come to life,” Susan explains. “The designs this season had a beautiful goddess feel and so we looked to Elizabeth Taylor holidaying in the early 1970s for inspiration. It was soon easy to find the right pieces and once we did, they really completed the look. Issa designs are timeless and worn by all types of women; these values are ones that I also try to uphold so it felt like a great fit.” Among the pieces selected were a 1980s Givenchy Laurel collar and an Alexis Kirk gold and turquoise necklace, and similar items have been sought for the Susan Caplan Vintage Collection which is stocked online and in Harrods and Selfridges, something Susan is understandably proud of. “I didn’t envisage any of this, I was driven by a passion,” she muses. “I just wanted to establish vintage jewellery as a non-transient trend, one that has a place in contemporary fashion. I still shop the same way as I have always done – I look for style and longevity in my choices. I often shop with my daughter who is a stylist as she knows what I like and I’m instantly comfortable in the selections she makes for me. She encourages me to push my boundaries from time to time and I think that is essential if you want to stay current. “In terms of my passion – it runs through everything that I do. I love art and design and believe that the right final touches, whether it be a necklace for my outfit or a chair for my living room, can transform a look. I tend to dress quite classically in skinny jeans and a loose fitting blouse. The right accessories can transform most looks from day to night which I consider when I source new pieces for my collections. ” Susan started out as an antiques dealer and names Hampstead Antiques Emporium as one of her favourite destinations in the local area. On Hampstead High Street you’ll find her shopping in Reiss from time to time, but it’s on the Heath where she confesses to being ‘in her element’. “I often walk there from my home in West Hampstead,” she says. “On a sunny day I continue to Regent’s Park stopping at Lemonia in Primrose Hill on my way – I love it here.” n 020 7483 3114, www.susancaplan.co.uk

beauty update Picture Perfect

Following the success of a recent collaboration with make-up artist Ayami Nishimura, Kentish Town based photographer Rankin has unveiled his latest beauty book in partnership with Caroline Saulnier. When he spoke to Vantage in September, Rankin confessed to relishing the creativity of such projects and has subsequently praised Caroline’s use of precision and colour. The pair met four years ago on a campaign shoot for Rimmel London, although both have long been eminent in their respective fields. “Caroline is one of the most highly skilled make-up artists I have ever worked with. What I couldn’t know from working with her on a commercial job is that she is a creative visionary – and her work is conceptually fascinating,” he says. “There is a lot of sensuality in her images, as well as a real raw edge to them.” Caroline Saulnier by Rankin, is distributed in the UK by Turnaround, priced £40, www.turnaround-uk.com

Rasayana at the White CRane CliniC

ten yeaRs of WondeR Proving there’s nothing better than a recommendation, especially when it comes courtesy of a supermodel or two, this November Vaishaly celebrates the ten year anniversary of her beauty clinic which is situated just moments from Marylebone High Street.

15 Minutes Wit

What, if any, celebrations do you have planned for the ten year anniversary of the clinic? The anniversary celebrations will be at the clinic with my staff and clients, we will be serving Champagne and canapés on the day. Also, we will be doing a special promotion whereby if you have your eyebrows threaded by one of the team of experts you will get a complimentary eyebrow tint.

Known locally as Therapy Street, St Georges Mews has welcomed award-winning ayurvedic therapist Jamie Chalmers to the White Crane Clinic in Primrose Hill. With an emphasis on restoring physical and mental well-being his ‘Rasayana’ approach combines detailed consultation with a variety of possible treatments, including the Eastern art of oil pouring on the ‘third eye’. Clients are considered high in Kapha, Vata or Pitta, the three bodily forces, before lifestyle recommendations are made to restore balance. The effect is total relaxation. 13 St George’s Mews, NW1 07540 725 021, www.rasayana.co.uk

It would be typical of a 16 piece collection to provide the great, the good and the not-so-good but Tom Ford’s holiday offering is a complete revelation.

What kind of environment did you originally want to create in your Marylebone clinic? The clinic was designed to cater for the discretion and privacy of all my clients (famous or otherwise) in an oasis of calm, away from the busy streets. The energy of the place feels good. So no matter what state one’s mind is in, as soon as one enters, the stress and tension disappears, making one’s mind and body relaxed. It’s absolutely crucial that the clients are calm and de-stressed before starting their treatment. When did you first start working with your notable clientele (e.g. Elle Macpherson) and how did that come about? I started treating Elle about 15 years ago, and she has been a regular and loyal client ever since. I treat lots of her friends (whom I won’t disclose), who had recommended me to her; she had also read about me in the press. Are there any beauty habits you’d advise clients against? Never ever over-do anything on your skin! Or use anything too harsh! This is where all sorts of skin problems start from – layering of chemical based products. So the best tip I’ve learnt for your skin, is just to keep it simple! How does it feel to be so well-known for your work? Being the first person to bring threading into the industry nearly 20 years ago and having my own skincare line, for me, is a true sense of achievement. I look forward to going into work every day, I absolutely love what I do. 51 Paddington Street, Marylebone, W1U, www.vaishaly.com

t’s often said that changing hairdresser can feel like the beauty equivalent of a slightly messy divorce. And it would be obvious, therein, to describe Paul Percival and Adam Reed as ‘the one’ (an honour they can share) for all their accolades and experience. But it would be wrong to do so, because they are so much cooler than that. And essentially, I’m not sure how well one copes with a husband who hangs around with supermodels all day. A TOUCH OF HISTORY

Pierro Fornasetti showed himself to be one of the most prolific creatives of the 20th century, infusing over 20,000 objects with whimsical, witty decoration and philosophy before his death in 1988. Nearly 25 years after his death, it is his son Barnaba who continues to protect the archives of the Milanese painter and sculptor, ensuring that his work continues to be enjoyed in the right way. ‘Flora di Fornasetti’ is a new home fragrance from the perfumery of the house, with notes derived from the gardens of the Fornasetti estate. Lily of the Valley, White Rose, Orange Blossom and Jasmine are the essences used in a candled form, while Fornasetti’s iconic image of Lina Cavalieri in the guise of mythical fertility goddess Flora, features on the front. 36 Chiltern Street, W1U, 020 7486 7590 www.ciretrudon.com

How did the idea for the Decoratum space come about? After decades in ‘the trade’ selling from a small space in central London and showing at various fairs and exhibitions, we decided that we could do much better by having a dedicated gallery that was large enough to display our pieces to their best advantage. We spent a lot of time looking for a suitable space before finally settling on premises in Church Street, Marylebone where we have two floors. Could you tell us about some of the more interesting pieces which you have discovered? One of our favourite and most interesting pieces is a unique Brazilian sofa designed by Sergio Bernardes and made by Sergio Rodrigues (acknowledged as ‘the father of Brazilian design’) in São Paulo in 1962. This particular sofa was a gift to Rodrigues’ sister and comes with an original letter from Rodrigues providing the history of the piece and confirming that it is unique. This is probably one of the most important pieces of Brazilian design currently on the market. On the contemporary design front, we also discovered a small design studio in Portugal who released a limited edition, multi-coloured sideboard called Spring Bloom – we were fortunate enough to have their prototype on display. We currently have one of the pieces available and we were so delighted with this that we have commissioned a unique sideboard of the same design, but in white, which is only available through Decoratum. Other design work that is most unusual and interesting is by French artist Alex Cayet who uses fallen Philippine Narra wood to create organic furniture. We have been fortunate enough to obtain a large collection of Cayet’s work.

COFFEE TABLE ESSENTIAL Kate Moss has built her fortune on impeccable style and elusiveness in equal measure, which is why Kate: The Kate Moss Book may be the closest thing to an autobiography that the model ever produces. ‘Produces’ being the operative word, for Moss has had great involvement in this photographic retrospective of her career and the editing duties fall to Fabien Baron with Jess Hallett and close friend, Jefferson Hack. The 368 page tome launches 6 November. Kate: The Kate Moss Book, £50 www.somersethouse.org.uk/shop/rizzoli-bookshop

Where are your pieces found or sourced from? We source pieces all over the world. We have very close ties with a number of excellent Brazilian collectors who always know to contact Decoratum when they have a piece in their collection that they are looking to sell. We are also well connected to dealers across Europe who know the quality and style of pieces that we are after and send us a select few pieces each month. We also buy from auctions and various private sellers who approach us via our website, the latter sending us anything from ten to 15 enquiries a day, so we really are spoiled for choice. Who is the typical Decoratum customer? While we have many famous clients (discretion dictates that we cannot name them), there is however no ‘typical’ customer; our clients vary from the private buyer who has saved up to buy a small display piece that they have had their eye on for some time, through to billionaire philanthropist art collectors; from first time home buyers with contemporary homes looking for a single key piece of furniture to spice up a room, to hedge fund managers looking to completely re-furnish a city apartment. The only thing that is ‘typical’ of our buyers is a love of vintage (and contemporary) design that is quirky, rare and of outstanding quality. What advice would you give people wishing to start collecting furniture or interesting pieces? Whenever a client or collector asks us if a particular piece will be a good investment, we tell them the same thing: buy something that you love, live with it and enjoy it. One day, if you decide to sell and the piece makes a profit, then you can say it has been a good investment. If you sell and it does not show a profit, you have still had the benefit and pleasure from living with something you love – so in that respect it is arguably still a good investment. Too often, people will overpay for a ‘big name’ because they think they will see huge returns; when we buy, we follow our own advice to the letter and simply buy what we fall in love with. If a piece happens to be by a big name, so much the better, but we don’t let this rule our decision making process. From a less emotional and more technical viewpoint, when we buy, we rarely, if ever, purchase pieces that are still in production. We have found that re-hashing classic old designs does not do the original any good. n

n spite of declaring, “I don’t really know about my own design style, I just do it,” thankfully whatever it is that Lady Weinberg – Anouska Hempel does, she does it exceptionally well indeed. Refreshingly open about her current interiors projects, Anouska is presently restoring the Pera Palace in Istanbul, one of the most famous hotels in the world. She’ll start with its little pink patisserie – dusted in pink icing sugar, and will work on it between remodelling hotels and homes as far afield as Singapore and Santiago, starting with an overall vision for each and then finding the things to go in it. “I’m a great collector,” she tells me.

“Wonderful ivory beads and stunning cuffs, bracelets and bowls of jet and all kinds of things. Bits of furniture, Biedermeir, apples, pears: I collect a strange funny mixture of things, usually to do with a particular colour at the time: I’ll go off on a jade route and come home with a whole lot of jade this, that and the other and vert-de-gris.” Although Anouska describes herself as ‘damned lucky’, the eclectic décors she has perfected at Blakes, La Suite West in Inverness Terrace and the Grosvenor House Apartments at Park Lane – to name but a few design schemes that bear her name – have won her deserved recognition at a time when it seemed everything else went ‘neutral’, ‘subtle’ and beige. “Minimalism has been and gone. It’s been and gone because it’s been done so badly,” she says. “I think there’ll be a complete revival to [the style of the pre-raphaelites] the turn of the century and Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, and Rossetti.” Vantage cannot think of a better candidate to spearhead the transformation. n www.anouskahempeldesign.com

wish list His death last October triggered widespread mourning in the watch world. This month, as Sotheby’s auctions the George Daniels Horological Collection, the same industry braces itself for the sale of one of the most important watch collections ever assembled. Considered by many to be the greatest watchmaker since AbrahamLouis Breguet, Daniels was one of the few modern watchmakers who could create a complete watch by hand. Famous for creating the co-axial escapement, a mechanism described as the most important horological development for 250 years, Daniels is the only watchmaker ever to have received a CBE and a MBE for his services to horology. The 130-something-piece lot will comprise Daniels’ entire personal collection, in addition to clocks and watches by some of the 17th, 18th and 19th century’s most famous makers. The auction is expected to realise in excess of £5 million and all proceeds from the sale of the collection will go to the George Daniels Educational Trust. Three years ago, A. Lange & Söhne presented the Lange Zeitwerk, the first mechanical watch that featured a constant-force escapement. Inspired by the success of the timepiece, which has been the winner of multiple industry awards, the company last month unveiled a special edition Handwerkskunst Lange Zeitwerk. Featuring a lever and escape wheel made of hardened 18-karat gold, and decorated with elaborate tremblage engraving, the 30 limited edition watches cast a traditional glance at A. Lange & Söhne’s most advanced creation.

Anyone sceptical of the flourishing state of the mechanical watch industry need only look to IWC for proof of the industry’s recessionproof nature. Within the last three months alone, the company has opened boutiques everywhere from Paris to New York and from Miami to the Middle East. Of the IWC watches released this year, the Portofino Chronograph Edition Laureus Sport for Good Foundation remains our favourite. www.iwc.com

As we continue to pay homage to Her Majesty The Queen following the triumphant 2012 Jubilee celebrations, Kensington Palace made its own tribute with a special exhibition showcasing Argyle pink diamonds, which have consistently played a role in royal occasions. In 1952, in the year of her coronation, the Queen had a solitaire pink diamond (the Williamson Pink) gifted to her, thus making it a fitting Jubilee symbol. The exhibition, entitled Out of the Vault – Pink Diamonds and Royalty, saw a selection of 11 international jewellers displaying their most exquisite pieces of Argyle pink diamond jewellery, many of which had not yet been seen by the public. As well as offering a spectacular visual experience, the exhibition also revealed the tales of the Argyle Pink Diamonds partners and their experiences with the royal families, sultans, maharajas and other colourful clientele. www.hrp.org.uk/KensingtonPalace

Cartier certainly caused breaths to be drawn at this year’s Biennale des Antiquaires with its newly-launched Dépaysement collection. The 150 awe-inspiring jewels making up the globe-spanning collection have been interpreted into different landscapes: Temporal, Luxiariant, Solar, Boreal and Urban. Although slightly more diverse than previous years, it was still unmistakably Cartier, with the much-loved panther showing its face in the form of a stunning sapphire and diamond ring and a striking colour palette of emeralds, sapphires and briolette aquamarines. With the summer came the arrival of new kid on the London jewellery scene, Joubi. Its unusual name, a reworking of the French word bijou, typifies the one-of-a-kind pieces which the brand creates; from quirky gold lacquer cat-ear rings to red carpet classics, it is a collection that has catered for all. Joubi’s first season collection was inspired by Creative Director Joanna Bourne’s travels to Africa and Asia, where she was drawn to the vibrant colour, form and geometric patterns of the exotic plants and animals. Joanna comments: “From a purely aesthetic viewpoint, there is no end to the variations you can derive from animals: from their fabulous colourings and markings to the way that they move and take different forms.” www.joubi.co.uk

romancing the Stone As Hollywood prepares for the most highly-anticipated film of 2013, Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby featuring Tiffany & Co., Olivia Sharpe examines the role of fine jewellery in cinema history

T

hroughout film history, costume has always been considered a vital component in character building and storytelling. Following the arrival of Hollywood, production companies started to create visionary masterpieces through their actors’ apparel, igniting worldwide fashion trends and influencing global culture – so much so that the Victoria & Albert Museum recently gathered together some of the most iconic costumes from more than 100 years of cinematic history in a groundbreaking exhibition. But what of jewellery? Although playing a small role in the grand scheme of costume design, jewellery has always performed a substantial part in character development and “setting the scene”, as well as being pivotal in the creation of lasting icons. In 1938, during the Golden Age of Hollywood, director George Cukor contacted ‘jewellery designer to the stars’ Paul Flato to ask him to design the jewels for his upcoming movie Holiday. Starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant, the romantic comedy tells the story of a man who has risen from lowly beginnings, only to be torn between his free-thinking lifestyle and the conventions of his fiancé’s family. The character of Linda (Hepburn) is loosely based on American socialite Gertrude Sanford Legendre who, during her lifetime, doubled up as a WWII spy, explorer, big-game hunter and environmentalist. It was necessary to portray the character’s inward independence and individuality but also her outward persona as a member of an elite American family. This was illustrated not just through the storyline but through the use of jewellery; the Flato diamond necklace and matching brooch worn by Hepburn in the scene where she sings Camptown Races portrays the character’s wealth but at the same time underlines her free-spirited nature through its

68

flamboyant design. During the years 1939-1942, Flato’s pieces would be credited in no less than six Hollywood films until the last movie featuring his jewellery in 1942, The Lady Is Willing, with Marlene Dietrich. Flato’s name was subsequently in more movie credits than any other jeweller of his time. Another of Flato’s contemporaries to be making a dramatic impact on the cinematic scene was Harry Winston. The American jeweller and watchmaker first opened his doors in 1932 and began a rapid process of transformation, revolutionising modern jewellery design and nurturing the most famous jewels in the world. It is therefore unsurprising that, for more than six decades, Winston diamonds have been an integral part of Hollywood’s glamorous history. Renowned for being the first jeweller to loan diamonds to a celebrity on the red carpet (to 1944 Academy Award winner, Jennifer Jones), he was (and remains) the jeweller of choice when it comes to the silver screen. In the classic picture Gentleman Prefer Blondes, Winston was immortalised on the silver screen by starlet Marilyn Monroe as she whispered the words, “Talk to me, Harry Winston, tell me all about it”, in the song Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend. His cinematic jewels have since also starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious (1946) and Mike Nichol’s The Graduate (1967). In the 2002 romantic comedy Maid in Manhattan, the Harry Winston signature wreath design adorns the neck of Jennifer Lopez. Although only a brief cameo appearance, the necklace symbolises one of the film’s main themes: appearance versus reality. Marisa’s (Lopez) outward façade as a rich, successful woman is juxtaposed with her true persona as a maid and it eventually takes her counterpart, Caroline Lane (Natasha Richardson) to expose her true identity after

recognising the wreath’s origin. In How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), the character Andie wears a similar diamond wreath necklace, this time with an attached 84-carat yellow diamond pendant (the Isadora) and a pair of 5-carat radiant-cut yellow diamond stud earrings. The matching dress was designed around the yellow diamond pendant and we see how jewellery once again plays a significant part in the plot as it is the necklace that leads to the exposure of the wearer’s true identity. This, and the estimated $14,200,000 worth of jewels reportedly lent to the film, indicates the importance that had been placed on jewellery, and not costume design, by the film production company. Matching Winston in both prestige and notoriety, legendary French jeweller Cartier was no stranger to the big screen (its name likewise hummed by Monroe in Gentleman Prefer Blondes). Cartier’s first recorded appearance was in the 1926 silent film The Son of the Sheik in which the Tank watch shines on the wrist of Rudolph Valentino. As the timepiece mismatched the Bedouin costumes in both style and era, it can only be presumed that it was owned by the actor himself. Fortunately, silent films at the time paid no heed to historical accuracy and it is thus indicative of Cartier’s public persona and influence that the watch was given such distinction; the jeweller provided a guarantee as well as artistic support. This was shown notably during the filming of Jack Clayton’s The Great Gatsby, when the newspapers had somehow got hold of the fantastic sums the producers had spent on Cartier jewellery for the film: “The 58 gems worn by Mia Farrow and Lois Chiles aren’t fakes but

absolutely genuine. And signed Cartier, no less! They are rumoured to have cost the trifling sum of five million francs (in old money, of course)”. Like his competitors, Cartier understood Hollywood’s influence over the public consciousness. For Clayton’s latest feature, it was essential to bring across the excess, wealth and superficiality characteristic of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s American Dream classic. The marquis-cut engagement ring created by Cartier and worn by Daisy (Mia Farrow) reproduces the glamour and free-spirited 1920s. It also serves as a constant reminder that Daisy is no longer the single woman Gatsby once knew and loved, and he is therefore tragically holding on to a false ideal. Following the film’s release, the ring became as iconic as the actors themselves, inspiring many women thenceforth to walk into Cartier and exclaim, “I want the Daisy ring”. As well as on-screen, actresses off-screen provided jewellery brands with a powerful source of publicity, caught on camera at red carpet events wearing their preferred designers. For Cartier, one of these actresses was Dame Elizabeth Taylor, who famously attended the Scorpio Ball in Monte Carlo wearing a Cartier necklace featuring a diamond which has henceforth gone down in history under the name of the Burton-Taylor diamond. Similarly, Bulgari would find the same influential endorsement in the Hollywood actress following the release of the motion picture, Cleopatra. It was during filming in 1962 that the actress first discovered Bulgari; she is quoted in her book, My Love Affair with Jewellery: “Undeniably, one of the biggest advantages to working on Cleopatra in Rome was Bulgari’s... shop.” From then on, the actress was pictured on numerous occasions sporting Bulgari jewels; for example the emerald parure necklace which she wore to meet HM the Queen, Elizabeth II, in 1965. Following her death, the necklace sold for an impressive $6,130,500. Contemporary Hollywood continues to use notable jewellery designers and brands for its costume design and character development as well as for its promotion. In the latest film adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel, Anna Karenina, directed

by Joe Wright, it stars British actors Keira Knightley and Jude Law as well as Chanel Fine Jewellery, used to convey the extravagance, luxuriousness and wealth of 19th century Russian society. Close up camera shots of Knightley staring at herself in mirrors wearing the sensational three-strand diamond Camelia Poudre necklace, or the opulent Pearl Sautoir necklace with matching earrings, also serves to depict the vanity and superficiality of the heroine. Although the jewellery used is not historically accurate, the anachronism was purposefully done by the director in order to “set the character (Anna Karenina) apart from her entourage”, making her the audience’s focal point. This was by no means the French Joaillerie’s first film debut, having been well-received in Gosford Park, Vanity Fair and Atonement. This October sees the release of the latest James Bond instalment, Skyfall, and it was no doubt more than coincidental that an established British jeweller, Stephen Webster, was chosen to design the pieces for the latest 007 spy epic in collaboration with Swarovski. The designer states: “Without question, collaborating with Swarovski on the jewellery for Skyfall has been exciting from the word go. The themes in the film seem to fit perfectly with the design aesthetic of the jewellery I create and the many creative meetings at Pinewood Studios between Swarovski, ourselves and the Bond team have only added to our enthusiasm for the project. We can’t wait to see the jewels, shaken not stirred within the movie.” On screen, it fell to French actress, Berenice Marlohe, who plays the character of Severine, to create the all-important link to the fascinating and mysterious world of Bond as interpreted by the designer in his charismatic and edgy designs. In 2013, the releases of Baz Luhrmann’s remake of The Great Gatsby (jewellery by Tiffany & Co.) and Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Diana (jewels courtesy of Chopard) are sure to set Hollywood ablaze. Thus in film, jewellery has always played its own role. We may consider Vivien Leigh’s opening dress in Gone With the Wind as one of the film’s most memorable images or Keira Knightley’s provocative emerald green dress in Atonement truly iconic, but, in the same vein, we cannot think of Breakfast at Tiffany’s without remembering Audrey Hepburn’s diamond tiara and stunning string of pearls, offsetting her fabulous Givenchy black dress. It is the jewellery that balances the costume and, without it, something essential would be missing (in some cases, the plot). In this way, the film industry has looked to the likes of Tiffany & Co. and other gifted jewellery designers to inspire them and their audiences throughout Hollywood history. “What I’ve found does the most good,” said Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, “is just to get into a taxi and go to Tiffany’s. It calms me down right away, the quietness and the proud look of it; nothing very bad could happen to you there.” n

the cycle REVOLUTION A new generation of electric bikes are fueling the quiet revolution taking a grip on the Capital

G

Ebco UcR-30: Winner of best buy Sunday Times September 2012

athering speed along the cycle lanes and commuter routes of London is a new kind of bicycle that could just be the answer to the prayers of Londoners needing a comfortable, fun and efficient way to get around. Electric bikes have come a long way since the early days of what seemed like a car battery strapped to an ugly and heavy bike. The modern ebike uses state-of-theart technology from Lithium batteries (think laptops and smart phones) to high-torque brushless motors to deliver a smooth, comfortable and enjoyable ride. It’s not just the technology that’s come on. The new generation of ebikes has been developed to look as good as they ride. World-renowned designers have been engaged, the likes of Pinifarina (the designers responsible for styling Ferrari and Maserati) for instance, to ensure that the new ebikes have stunning lines, while being comfortable and easy to ride. A great example of the new breed of ebike brands is Solex. The company that sold over eight million scooters in the cool café-culture of post war Europe was recently re-launched selling ebikes and escooters. All the models have been designed by Pinifarina and have combined the looks of an Italian sports car with the technology of a Japanese electronics giant. The results speak for themselves with the ‘Solexity’ recently appearing in the must have section of the FT’s How to Spend It and the ‘Velosolex’ folding ebike singled out by the Sunday Times for its looks. Another new ebike brand breaking onto the scene is EBCO. Developed specifically for the UK market, the EBCO

range includes models that can be bought through the Government’s Cycle to Work Scheme and include great details such as wet weather kits and ergo-comfort riding packs as standard, all of which help cope with both the weather and the often poor quality roads of the UK! With ranges of up to 50 miles these ebikes make the ideal way to get around. It’s no surprise that the Sunday Times In-Gear gave EBCO’s UC30 a ‘Best Buy’ award when stacked up against four other leading ebike models. They said of the UC30, giving it four stars (out of five): ‘Priced smartly and well designed for commuters.” It is no accident that there are some great new ebikes appearing on our streets at the moment. Ebikes are a global phenomenon and are fast becoming the preferred mode of transport in many European cities and beyond. This has been proven by sales figures from around the world, stats like – in Germany one in every ten bikes sold is an ebike! By far the single most driving force of this revolution is the development of the technology. With more efficient and reliable motors and lighter batteries the ebike is a great way to travel but buyers are now faced with more choice and the possibility of more confusion. Now, more than ever, it is really important to make sure that if you’re buying an ebike you’re buying the right one for you. EBC Ltd is the leading UK based specialist distributor focused on nothing but ebikes. With a number of quality brands and a service centre at its Midlands HQ it has become the leader in regards to all things ebikes. Recently nominated for an industry award, there is nowhere better to find out information and discover why ebikes could be the transport solution for Londoners. n For more information on ebikes, and where to try and buy, visit www.ebco-ebikes.co.uk, call 01926 437700 or email info@ebco-ebikes.co.uk

Testing Times Marc Laniado, consultant urologist at The Wellington Hospital, discusses the debate over PSA testing for prostate cancer

T

o PSA or not to PSA; it’s a huge question most men will have to answer at one time or another in their life. Until recently the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test was considered very much routine for any man over fifty who showed any symptoms of an enlarged prostate, such as frequent trips to the toilet. Carried out by a GP, a high PSA reading triggers a referral to a urologist for further investigation to confirm, or rule out, the presence of cancer cells. As an early warning system for a disease which each

78

year kills almost 11,000 men in the UK each year, it has been considered to be important in saving lives and avoiding the development of secondary cancers. But now the tide may be turning with many experts calling for the use of this test to be scaled back. A recent report in the US concluded that routine PSA screening results in unnecessary anxiety and uncomfortable and intrusive diagnostic procedures, often in men who would otherwise never have been troubled by the condition. They concluded that PSA

health promotion

should no longer be part of a routine screening programme available in the United States. Whilst here in the UK, rather than advising patients one way or the other, leading cancer charity Prostate Cancer UK has produced a list of pros and cons of PSA testing so that the patient can make up his own mind. But, as the debate rages, one urologist at least has no doubt about the value of PSA testing. Mr Marc Laniado, consultant urologist at The Wellington Hospital, firmly believes that PSA testing is a life saver. “PSA is a very effective early warning system” he insists. “And most symptoms of prostate cancer are invisible until the cancer has developed. PSA is one of the few tools we have that can effectively screen for the disease at an early stage. A recent study showed a 30 to 50 per cent reduction in prostate cancer spreading to the bone in those who had been screened with PSA rather than those who had no screening – simply because the cancer had been picked up earlier. The key to avoiding unnecessary anxiety over treatment is not to refuse a PSA test. The crucial issue is how your doctor deals with those PSA results. For example, many patients who come to me have often already been told that they must have a biopsy. However, I start from the position that biopsy should not be the reflex reaction simply because of a high PSA reading. Instead, at The Wellington Hospital, we utilise the most modern tools and up-to-date research to determine the chance that a man may have prostate cancer before we consider proceeding to invasive diagnostic procedures. My first step is to determine the family history and relevant medical history of the patient. I then carry out a digital rectal examination (DRE) and prostate ultrasound to give me a very accurate idea of the size of the prostate and cancer, if present. All these findings, including the PSA levels, are linked to a specialist risk assessment calculator. If the risk

appears very low then I will reassure the patient. Depending on that risk I may suggest further active surveillance such as regular PSA tests, DREs or ultrasounds, but essentially the patient needs no further treatment. However, if the risk assessment shows that there is a possibility of cancer then the patient would have the latest MRI scan. If the radiologists do not find evidence of significant prostate cancer in the MRI scan then I am happy to reassure the worried man. As you can see, far from being a cause of anxiety and unnecessary treatment, the PSA test simply flags up a potential problem, which may need to be dealt with and investigated. Where an MRI scan indicates prostate cancer, we choose to carry out targeted biopsy. With a targeted biopsy, the chance of finding the relevant abnormality is greater, and a precise estimate of risk can be made. This allows people to choose from different treatments – active monitoring, HIFU, brachytherapy or a da Vinci Prostatectomy – with the confidence that they have the most precise and accurate information possible”.

GP SESSIONS: MOvEMbEr In support of Movember Dr Lisa Anderson, GP

any changes such as becoming itchy or bleeding, changing in colour or shape.

at The Wellington Hospital, looks at the top five health issues affecting men in the UK

3.

In my experience men are more reticent about seeking medical advice than women, and are often prompted to do so by their partners. More than 100,000 men a year die prematurely due to neglecting their health. Below are five important health issues with the symptoms that should never be ignored and that you should see your GP for:

Feeling depressed – this is something that is a taboo subject particularly in men, but is increasingly common, particularly in the current economic climate. Admitting you have a problem is the first step to resolving this. You should seek help if you feel sad, lose interest in things you previously enjoyed, have an altered sleep pattern, a lack of concentration and become irritable easily.

4.

Trouble urinating – may indicate a large prostate but also could be a sign of prostate cancer.

5.

Erectile dysfunction – if this lasts more than a couple of weeks this can be a sign of more serious conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes or high blood pressure.

1.

2.

A lump on your testicle – testicular cancer is most common in the 20-35 year group. Nearly 2000 men will be diagnosed each year and regular self examination is recommended. Moles on the skin – check your moles regularly and look for

“At work I’m spoilt for choice with the amazing produce I use, it makes cooking a real pleasure. One of my most enjoyed pastimes is to stay at home and cook, my wife loves me trying out different recipes! There are a few things I wouldn’t go without in the kitchen.”

1. Carrots, onions and celery : Chopped up and gently cooked down I think these root vegetables are the most essential ingredients to add amazing depth to any slow cooked dish. I love making ragu for pasta and I always begin with this combination. It never fails.

82

2. Olive oil : Another massive influence in Italian cooking, I never go without a good quality olive oil at home. Salads are brought to life with a nice dressing, and a good olive oil does all the work for you. My favourite way of using olive oil is tossing it through pasta just before you serve it up, which adds an amazing shine and silky texture to the sauce. One of my favourite things to cook at home is one of the simplest spaghetti aglio e olio, olive oil and garlic – easy, but amazing. 3. Avocados : Probably my all-time favourite food, they’re best simply mashed up on brown toast with a squeeze of lemon and salt and pepper. They also go deliciously with eggs for breakfast and feature on our brunch menu at Pizza East Kentish Town.

It’s 13 years since local resident Marco Pierre White announced his retirement from the kitchen – but he’s hardly picked up the pipe and slippers since. When he’s not on TV, he’s busy running hotels and restaurants, he tells James Steen

T

he cheerful maitre d’ is at the door greeting customers and, at the mirrored bar on the other side of the room, a couple of immaculately pin-striped gents are enjoying a swift pick-me-up cocktail before lunch. But here at Wheeler’s of St James’s, it is the big man on table seven who grabs the attention as he loudly entertains a little crowd with gags and anecdotes. He is Marco Pierre White, chef-restaurateur-hotelier and who, with Sir Rocco Forte, owns Wheeler’s. The gags come quick and fast. “I love to wander around supermarkets,” he says. “Actually, I love an aisle – that’s why I’ve been married three times.” Brief pause and then: “The customer is always right… once he’s paid the bill.” Yes, it’s the Marco Show, minus the cameras. On television (his credits include Hell’s Kitchen and Kitchen Wars) he can come across as a monster-sized, knifewielding bruiser, but in person he is charming, polite and funny. Fellow chef Jean-Christophe Novelli once said: “If Marco hadn’t been Britain’s greatest chef he could have been Britain’s greatest stand-up comedian.” Britain’s light entertainment industry may have missed out, but the nation’s food culture has been gloriously enriched by White’s significant involvement. He was just 33 years old and at the Hyde Park Hotel (now Mandarin Oriental), when he became the first British chef – and the world’s youngest – to win three Michelin stars. That was back in 1995, and White’s place in gastronomic history was well and truly assured. “I didn’t set out to win Michelin stars like chefs do today,” he says. “I just worked and worked and worked – I didn’t really have much of a life outside of the kitchen. The kitchen was my comfort zone; it was the only place where I felt I could express myself.” As a young man he was, he says, “Quite shy. My mother died when I was six, and I grew up on a council estate on the outskirts of Leeds. My father was a chef and he always cooked well for us. I became a chef because my dad told me: ‘People will always need feeding.’” At 16, White pitched up at the back door of the Hotel St George in Harrogate and asked for a job as a kitchen apprentice. “I got the job,” he recalls. “And later on I knocked on more kitchen doors to ask for jobs.” His journey to Michelin stardom included stints of training with Pierre Koffmann and Albert Roux. “But at Le Gavroche, Albert used to call me his little bunny, and there was only so much of that I could take,” recalls White. “One day he started waving a soup ladle in front of my face, saying: ‘Listen to me, my little bunny…’ I’d had enough so I marched out of the kitchen. It took me a while to see the funny side of it, but a few months later I was back with him.” He also worked with Raymond Blanc at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons in Oxfordshire. “Raymond was a cross between a genius and Inspector Clouseau. He remains hilarious. We had a football match – chefs against waiters – and Raymond was the referee. When I fouled someone he didn’t send me off. Instead he screamed across the pitch: ‘You’re sacked!’ Sacked? Luckily, I was re-instated later. He taught me a lot about palate; to question non-stop the cooking process – what you are doing and why you are doing it.” It was in the late 1980s that White discovered phenomenal

overnight success in the capital, with his first restaurant Harveys, beside Wandsworth Common. The rich and glamorous crossed the Thames to eat his food, yet he was an oddity to the Establishment chefs. They were confused by his wild, long hair and dishevelled, hollow looks. He was also a fascination to the gossip columnists, who wrote excitedly of his love life and hailed him as a rock-star chef. “Wandsworth was the perfect location – you can create a revolution in somewhere slightly out the way in terms of London locations. That’s why there are so many fantastic restaurants, cafés and bars outside of the centre of town. St. John’s Wood, Hampstead, Belsize Park – these are places that are geographically uncomplicated. And because of that, they provide a great platform for invention and exposure. I’ve always considered location imperative.” When in the kitchen, Marco was unique; the bandana-clad chef whose immense culinary talents inspired a generation of chefs, including Gordon Ramsay and Jason Atherton. “I’ve grown up a lot since those days,” he admits. “I was often described as angry when, in fact, I was confused. I’d moved at such a fast pace that I hadn’t had time to address the difficulties of my childhood; my mother’s death. I had to learn that if I could never come to terms with it, I would have to learn to live with it.” He retired from the kitchen in 1999, but was too much in love with the restaurant business to step away from it. His restaurants now include the Frankie’s chain, which he co-owns with jockey Frankie Dettori, and whose reach stretches up to Golders Green. In recent months White, a father of four, has also been out shopping for small hotels – nice inns with rooms – in the countryside. In Norfolk and Suffolk he now has the Angel and the Lifeboat; in the Cotswolds he has bought the Pear Tree Inn, the Horse and Groom, and the Black Boy Inn. The cast of Downton Abbey stay at the Carnarvon Arms, White’s inn in Newbury, Berkshire. Is he turning his back on the capital? “No, I’m not, but it’s good to explore further afield. What’s the harm?” He is famous for cooking ridiculously posh (and expensive) food, but he says that these days he prefers, “proper simple food like perfect smoked salmon” to a six-course meal. He is also the front man for Knorr and a campaigner for branded sauces. He says: “The way I see it, companies like Heinz have spent fortunes perfecting their products – all we have to do is use them correctly. I don’t think of the contents of bottles as simply condiments for the side of the plate. Heinz Tomato Ketchup adds depth to a casserole and I use it as the base for a great sauce that works superbly with roast chicken and grilled or fried salmon. “Lea & Perrins is great too. Curry powder is a lovely seasoning for roast or fried fish, like red snapper, but why make your own curry powder? Knorr stock cubes, again, should be a seasoning rather than overpowering the other flavours of the dish. Use them correctly and they’ll improve the dish.” His Japanese assistant and driver, Mr Ishii, arrives at the table. “Mr Ishii is a great man and he puts up with me. We’re yin and yang,” says White. “We get on really well, and he drives me everywhere. He drives me here, he drives me there... he drives me mad.” A bit lame, perhaps, but it raises a laugh. And then White is off, dashing to the Range Rover and away to the countryside. n

Autumn FlAvours Chris Ammermann, co-founder of Caravan, which has recently opened a new restaurant in King’s Cross, talks about some of his favourite grapes for autumn

W

e’ve had a lot of fun putting the wine list together for our new site in Granary Square. As a team, we only choose wines that all three of our founders like, so that lengthens the elimination process somewhat! At this time of year, we look for white wines with more body and texture, more pronounced fruit and heightened aromatics. These wines will stand up to the bold autumnal flavours of our dishes. One such grape is Friulano from Fruili in north east Italy. It possesses wonderful floral aromas, good acidity, weight and texture. It’s versatile, goes well with seafood, poultry and cured hams and is a fantastic match to our dish of grits and girolles. I can’t drink enough of this at the moment. Moving west, another similar grape is Albarino from Galicia, in northwest Spain. It’s wonderfully aromatic and robust, goes well with seafood and many of our vegetable dishes and is a great match to our butternut squash and chorizo croquettes, and also our mackerel fillet with avocado and corn salsa. Another grape I love when it starts getting colder is Viognier. This is a floral and highly aromatic wine with very little acidity, and goes with a wide range of food including spicy dishes. Although northern Rhone Viognier is the purest, more affordable examples are available from Languedoc, and I recently had an interesting example from Millton Estate in New Zealand’s East Coast. Staying in the northen Rhone valley but moving to red wine, it’s hard to ignore good Syrah this time of year. Characterised by black pepper, leather and spice, we are selling more Syrah than ever by way of Crozes-Hermitage from a good producer like David Reynard. This has become the wine to match with our wagyu steak. I’m a big fan of Austrian reds and, although they’re not cheap, Blaufrankish, Zweigelt and St Laurent (blended or as a varietal) always prove a success for people looking for something different. They are food-friendly wines with rich tannins, good acidity and ripe cherries. St Laurent, with its pinot noir-like flavours is great compliment to our baby back ribs and kohlrabi slaw. The final red is my wine of the moment, Occhipinti SP68, a blend of nero d’avola and frappato. It’s charming, with violet, berry fruits, fresh and alive. Funnily enough it goes fantastically well with pizza, which is a new addition to our menu. A natural wine, crafted by a feminine hand in the heat of Sicily, so perhaps a metaphor of the summer we never had, and certainly something to remember summer by on a cool autumn evening. Bring on autumn – now I just can’t wait till winter arrives! n www.caravankingscross.co.uk

plAying FAvourites Soho House’s latest Kentish Town venture brings some much-loved favourites to NW5, but it is their new concept Chicken Shop that steals the show, says Emma Johnson

U

nless you’ve been living under a rock for the last month or so, it can’t have escaped your notice that restaurant and bar group Soho House have turned their expert eye northwards, and opened their newest venture, (or ventures I should say, as the new site actually hosts three restaurants), in the humble confines of NW5. Occupying space where there was once a dreary Grand Union, the expert eye of the design team have turned this large space into a veritable hymn to great, fashionable, affordable food. There’s a Pizza East upstairs, and a Dirty Burger round the back (which I’ll get to in a minute), but Chicken Shop downstairs is the real success story here. Heralded by critics and locals alike, the cosy, dark space lends itself perfectly to the oncoming winter months (but didn’t seem to suffer when it launched at the end of August this year either), and the rustic, vintage diner-style décor is a perfect match for the menu. On offer, unsurprisingly, is chicken, cooked to expert perfection on a rotisserie and served as quarters, halves or wholes. The chicken comes already chopped

into handy-to-share pieces; succulent, tasty and perfectly seasoned, they are served with hot or smoky sauce, made on the premises, and any of their four sides (I recommend them all). Homemade coleslaw is crunchy and rich, the butter lettuce and avocado has a tangy dressing and plenty of perfectly ripe avocado throughout, and the sweetcorn is, well, sweet and delicious, while the crinkle cut chips (which are automatically served with ketchup and garlic mayo), are devastatingly moreish. There are no starters, but you really don’t need any, and if you’re still hungry then there’s a huge apple pie on offer – which is brought over to your table in its entirety, where a slice as big as you fancy is cut for you. For drinks there’s beer on draft and wines served by the glass or the jug. I’ve no idea exactly what the wines are, they’re only designated as House, Decent and Good – but these descriptions are bang on, as are the prices here. Chicken Shop has a great vibe, good food, warm, efficient service, and now that they’re offering takeaway too, we can see it will soon become an NW favourite. Upstairs Pizza East offers the same formula as its two Portobello and Shoreditch sites, with industrial décor, open kitchens, bread ovens, hanging hams, intriguing starters, quirky pizzas and a family friendly approach. The wine list is unashamedly Italian, service is friendly, if a little pretentious, and seating is everything from long tables at the front of the restaurant to bar seating facing the kitchen at the back. We enjoyed some spicy pizza, nice breads and a good bottle of Italian red when we went, and the place was busy, even though it was Monday night. This is a fab addition to the area, and already becoming a popular brunch and lunch destination at the weekends. Round the back, targeting the peckish few walking past after a few drinks at The Vine, is Dirty Burger, which started life (as all good restaurants do these days), as a pop-up in Soho. Its more permanent home in NW5 definitely errs on the industrial side of industrial chic, and the shared seating, corrugated iron walls and takeaway-style service won’t be for everyone; but the burgers and chips are excellent and it has a fun, relaxed vibe. There’s lots to love here, the presence of Soho House alone has ensured NW5 is well and truly on the cool gastronomic map of London; but more importantly, the company has brought to the area two fab places to eat, and one extraordinary one. Put the flour and salt into a bowl and rub in the butter until you have fine crumbs. Add the egg yolks and a turn of black pepper and mix to a smooth dough. Roll into a ball, cover and chill in the fridge for 15 minutes. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan. Flour the rabbit legs, season well and colour lightly on all sides. Remove the legs from the pan. In the same pan, sweat the onion without colouring for five minutes. Add the garlic and thyme, then the browned rabbit legs. Take the meat from the rabbit legs and mix with the morels, if using, the leek and tarragon. Put this mixture into an ovenproof dish. Pour the sauce over and allow to cool, then chill in the fridge for an hour or so just to firm everything up ready to take the pastry. Dampen the edge of the dish with water. Put an egg cup, upturned in the middle of the dish. Roll out the pastry and drape over the dish. Crimp the edge, brush with beaten egg and leave to rest in the fridge for an hour to firm up the pastry and prevent it shrinking when you bake it. Preheat the oven to 180C/gas mark 4. ovember might seem an odd month to launch an outdoor terrace, but there are many saving graces to new space which is set to be unveiled this month at Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill, situated on Portman Square. The whole bar area has had a makeover courtesy of design house Bespoke by Brigitta Spinocchia, with the new look bar championing culture with a light touch; Winston Churchill and his wife Clementine are referenced through art, travel, champagne, cigars and whisky, while the décor is plush and elegant. The humidor will be stocked largely with cigars selected by leading Cuban importer Hunters & Frankau and both the cocktail and wine menu feature old favourites and unique blends. The staff have been selected for their knowledge of both and, while you can prop up the bar, The Churchill Bar & Terrace has been furnished with plenty of armchairs over stools, which is by no means inconsequential in a city where venues can be made out of ice, dotted with pieces of old sports cars or accessed through secret doorways, as media-friendly talking points replace good, old-fashioned places to people watch. Outside, we’re assured heaters and blankets are at the ready and a huge bronze screen gives guests added privacy. It’s also worth going just to see a life size bronze sculpture of Winston Churchill by Lawrence Holofcener, the man commissioned to make the ‘Allies’ form of Churchill and President Franklin Roosevelt, which stands in Bond Street. It looks like the outdoor social scene which characterises New York is set to land on our doorsteps. n

arrive and revive

The ‘Alm’ we hiked to today was an insider tip from our host. The view from here of sun-kissed mountain peaks reaching for the sky is simply spellbinding. We feel totally free, nearly giddy with joy. We might even spend the night up here. Just like the dairy maid. For information about holidays in Austria, visit www.austria.info/treasures or call 0845 101 1818

HOT SPOT in November

BERLin, GERmAny

why

Europe’s eclectic city boasts all sorts of attractions at this time of year; fresh off the back of Oktoberfest, Germany’s festive spirit is awakened with the advent of the country’s famed Christmas markets. Conveniently nearby and with excellent transport links, Germany is ideal for an indulgent weekend away.

where

A haven of artistic intuition with a gourmet food and drink scene, Berlin is Germany’s endlessly intriguing capital city. With cultural attractions aplenty, from the historically evocative Reichstag and the dilapidated, art adorned remains of the notorious Berlin Wall, to the inspired repertoire of the Berlin Philharmonic orchestra, visitors to the city can’t possibly ever be bored. The Charlottenberg Castle Christmas Market, taking place this year from 24 November to 26 December, is one of the city’s most cherished festive celebrations, presenting a uniquely wonderful ensemble of arts and crafts and world sourced cuisine, all against the scenic backdrop of the atmospherically lit 17th century Charlottenberg Castle.

stay

Berlin is host to no end of luxury hotels, however, Soho House is a standout for its offbeat and effortlessly fashionable charm. Located in the city’s central Mitte district, the boutique hotel is extravagant yet edgy, and teeming with personality. Rooms range from the sweetly named Tiny and Small to more decadently furnished grand Art Deco-style abodes, however all boast equally fantastic views of the city. With its sought after rooftop pool and a Cowshed spa in the basement, the Soho House is top to bottom delightful. www.sohohouseberlin.com

room With a VieW The Pe ninsula, Tokyo Anyone who’s ever stayed at The Peninsula, Tokyo, would surely agree that concrete jungles make for superb views. The centrally located hotel looks upon such delights as Hibiya Park and the Imperial Palace, however it’s the hotel’s top floor restaurant Peter, where diners are treated to panoramic views of Japan’s sprawling capital, that has derived The Peninsula its reputation for being the viewpoint from which to take in the city. The hotel is also renowned for its palatial Spa by ESPA, the first of its kind in the country, which provides an indulgent and deeply relaxing retreat from the busy metropolis. www.peninsula.com/tokyo

World First

Long associated with underwater delights, the Maldives have paved exhilarating new ground in the aquamarine domain by recently welcoming the world’s first underwater nightclub, Subsix. Lying unobtrusively beneath an over-water restaurant, the club is an exciting addition to the Niyama resort, in the islands’ Dhaalu Atoll. Accessible by boat only, Subsix boasts floor to ceiling windows, allowing clubbers incredible views of the surrounding ocean environment. www.niyama.peraquum.com

Polo at the Palace

This November the grandiose private gardens of the stylish five star Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi will provide the setting for a two day polo tournament, bringing one of the most favoured events on London’s social calendar, Polo in the Park, to the Middle East. Polo at the Palace will see four teams representing some of the world’s leading centres of finance and fashion vying for the revered Coutts Polo Cup, whilst guests enjoy the match from the comfort of an exclusive pitch-side tent or private chalet. www.emiratespalace.ae

Tucked away amidst 7,500 acres of calming seclusion in the wilderness of the Scottish Highlands lies Skibo Castle, home of the elusive Carnegie Club, one of the world’s most elite escapes. another day in

Le Saint Geran in Mauritius is one of the island’s oldest, and best, resorts. Emma Johnson experiences a luxurious escape from the real world and discovers that perfection really is possible 94

t r av e l

L

e Saint Geran sits in a glittering turquoise lagoon on the north east side of Mauritius, its long beach snaking around the peninsula, powder white sands lapped gently by clear water and thousands of palm trees swaying gently in the breeze. A stunning nine-hole golf course stretches across the sloping hills, affording fantastic views over the tropical scenery, while their extensive grounds and manicured gardens provide the perfect place for an evening stroll. Our beautiful, spacious suite (there are only suites here, no rooms), has a small private terrace, which leads straight out to the beach. On arriving, we grab the bottle of Champagne chilling in our room, and head straight for the thatched parasols and sunbeds where fresh towels, water and cold cloths await us. The sun is warm, even through the early summer clouds, and it’s very easy to relax into ‘island time’. Later, fancying a little something to eat, we stick the blue ‘Service’ flag in the sand and order two Wagyu burger picnic boxes from a smiling waiter. Fifteen minutes later the most luxurious lunchboxes we’ve ever had arrive, opening to reveal a Thai green papaya salad, root vegetable crisps, a perfectly cooked, juicy and delicious burger and a dessert of tropical fruits, dressed with crushed mint ice. Perfect. A few hours later and we find ourselves reclining on Turkish rugs and cushions at the far end of the beach, armed with a cocktail while watching the sunset. It’s beautiful and tranquil, with jazz music filtering through the trees. We catch each other’s eye and smile. It's so perfect, it almost doesn't seem real. But it is. Le Saint Geran has been a feature of Mauritian life for over 25 years, and in that respect is very much a key part of the landscape. While it’s a big

‘‘

It’s beautiful and tranquil, as jazz filters through the trees

’’

resort, with over 200 suites, everything is generously spacious, with even their standard suites offering walk-in wardrobes, large bathrooms, and plenty of seating and relaxing areas, both inside and outside. Architecturally, Le Saint Geran is intriguing and beautiful, with a vast marble reception and view out to the lagoon to welcome you, as well as a well-developed jungle-style garden, with a small stream, ponds and mini islands, all attracting numerous wild fish and birds, including several swans. Eating options here are extensive. The buffet and à la carte options at the main La Terrasse restaurant offer good meals, seated by the main pool with views across the beach and of the entertainment later in the evening. For lunch, this turns into a relaxed poolside eatery, offering local cuisine, such as fried rice, noodles and aromatic chicken or fish, as well as burgers, sandwiches and salads.

95

t r av e l

Foodies, however, should make the most of the two signature restaurants here, both serving wonderful food and wine. Rasoi by Vineet, from Michelin-starred chef Vineet Bhatia, makes the most of the hotel’s lagoon setting, with tables situated above the water and views along the sandy beach. Eating here was very romantic, and the Indian cuisine is beautifully executed. The menu offers the more traditional dishes you’d expect to find, as well as sharing dishes and more inventive options, all served with an elegant, fine dining approach. Service is discreet and informative, and the wine list (available throughout the resort) is one of the best we’ve seen. To really get the most out of the extensive wine selection, dining at Prime, their other signature restaurant, is a must. Serving a range of fish and meat, with European, Asian and African influences – we enjoyed the delights of crustacean soup, whole grilled lobster, beautifully cooked steaks and sushi; wine is expertly matched and the knowledgeable sommelier is always on hand to guide and advise. During the day, the beach provides the main place for relaxing and getting the most out of the resort. With the entire beach area serviced by efficient, friendly staff it is all too easy to sink onto your sunbed in the morning and never leave it, except for a leisurely dip in the crystal clear water. In fact, the only thing we’d move for was

96

the excellent spa, enjoying several wonderful treatments during our stay. If you can, book their Garden Room – a treatment room in the middle of the jungle gardens – and have a massage while allowing your mind to drift off to the sound of native birds calling in the trees. Afterwards a soothing stint in the sauna or steam room leaves you feeling refreshed and enlivened, while the spa’s beautiful swimming pool provides a peaceful, child-free place to swim and relax. Not that it was actually a necessity. Activities for children here are second to none and many couples could be seen enjoying their calm mornings, afternoons and evenings, while their children enjoyed the KidsOnly club, which provides fully-supervised activities – such as local discovery, education, culture, nature, sports, arts and crafts – from 10am to 10pm. There is always the danger with hotels entering their third decade that they’ve been left behind by the style, modernity and changing trends of the on-going years. An older hotel can still have retained its reputation, but sometimes its more dated décor and approach cannot compete with the newer models. Not so with Le Saint Geran, the veritable grande dame of hotels in Mauritius, and a well-deserved title. Tell anyone that you’re going to the east side of the island and they’ll nod sagely and say: ‘Le Saint Geran…?’ It’s not really a question, either. There is simply nowhere better to stay. n

AMSTERDAM

With one of the world’s most important art collections, alongside a wealth of stunning boutiques, cafés and restaurants, Elle Blakeman explores the picturesque canal-side city of Amsterdam

A

msterdam is the biggest village you’ll ever see. It may be the largest city in Netherlands, and the capital city at that, but at its heart Amsterdam is a beautiful, quaint little village, full of people riding bikes over canals, quirky architecture decorated with exquisite flowers and outdoor cafés with pretty garden furniture inviting you to while away the afternoon. As the ancient, cobbled streets are simply not built for cars – and the parking worse than London – Amsterdam is deliciously devoid of the traffic, noise and pollution that plague every other major city in the world. For visitors, you will find that most things are easily within walking or cycling distance, both of which are a great way to get around. The city houses some of the world’s most impressive art, mixing the Old Masters with the great modern painters; street art with renowned antique galleries. See Rembrant’s Night Watch and Vermeer’s striking Kitchen Maid before moving on to the pre-war 20th century artists: Cézanne, Picasso, Matisse and Chagall. The Van Gogh museum demands at least an afternoon – and advance tickets to avoid the understandably large

98

queues – with 200 paintings and 500 drawings by the post-Impressionist Dutch painter. For those inspired to bring some art home, the Jordaan area should be next on your list, with around 40 specialist galleries. You can also visit studios at Open Ateliers Jordaan, to see art being made. And for anyone who prefers to wear their art on their sleeve, head for the chic streets of PC Hooftstraat, Amsterdam’s answer to Bond Street and Mount Street combined, where you will find all the usual suspects: Vuitton, Mulberry, Chanel and their peers. Another place that should be high on the agenda of every stylish traveller are De Negen Straatjes (the Nine Streets) – a three-block by three-block set of quirky little streets over the canal, filled with trendy little boutiques, cafés, bars and restaurants, all ideal for leisurely exploring. At night, avoid the seedy side of the city, and head to the Muziektheater, the home of The Dutch Opera, The National Ballet and the Holland Symphonia. Situated at the borders of the river Amstel in one of the oldest parts of the city, it is a beautiful place to see the lights reflecting over the canal and absorb the magic of this Dutch village. n

t r av e l ‘Night Watch’ by Rembrandt

Where to stay

For a cultural trip, the Canal House, located in the heart of the Jordaan is the ideal place to be. This seriously luxurious boutique hotel houses high ceilings, a vast art collection and impressively large and opulent rooms, rich with colour and art and suitably quirky décor. Though the front looks over the stunning Keizersgracht canal – the perfect place to watch the world float by – you will struggle to drag yourself away from the back, where you will find one of the largest private gardens in Amsterdam, complete with a private summer house, with just enough space for two. eating & drinking

For a real Dutch treat and a unique dining experience, head to De Kas (the greenhouse), which unsurprisingly is an enormous – but luxurious – greenhouse, where one half is reserved for growing the food, and the other half for eating it. Founded by Gert Jan Hageman in 2001, after earning a Michelin star for his Dutch haute cuisine, the food here is healthy and delicious – it will change the way you feel about vegetables: Oyster plant, anyone? www.restaurantdekas.nl

Quinta Real Zacatecas, Mexico

Hôtel Palafitte, Switzerland

Innovatively tucked into the grandstand of the restored former San Pedro bullfighting ring lies arguably Mexico’s most unusually unique luxury hotel, Quinta Real Zacatecas. The 19th century structure has retained all of the majesty of its former role, but the hotel’s quiet exclusivity means it’s a world away from its former crowd hosting days. Offering guests boutique-style intimacy, whilst at the same time not compromising on any of the extravagance of a five star establishment, Quinta Real Zacatecas is a rich introduction into Mexico’s vibrant culture. www.quintarealhotels.com

Hôtel Palafitte, switZeRland The only hotel in Europe built entirely upon water is exceptional not only for its aquatic nature but also for its skilful recreation of the water bungalows that pepper the South Pacific, in the tranquil Lake Neuchâtel of the Swiss Alps. Hotel Palafitte adeptly offers stylish, luxury accommodation both on and off shore, but it’s the 24 pavilions on the lake, each with breath-taking views of the surrounding waters and the looming Alps that have earned the hotel well-deserved worldwide recognition for being distinctly unique. www.palafitte.ch

The Liberty Hotel, Boston

tHe libeRty Hotel, boston, usa Formerly home to the questionable characters serving time at the Charles Street Jail, the satirically named Liberty Hotel in Boston now welcomes a much more starry group of guests. Meticulously transformed into the luxury establishment it embodies today, the hotel’s glamorous façade contains more than a few ironic nods towards its former days as the city’s infamous penitentiary. The lobby has retained the commanding structure of the prison exercise arena, and guests also have a chance to enter the Clink, the hotel’s humorously titled American cuisine restaurant. www.libertyhotel.com

Much can be fashioned out of ice, but an entire hotel beggars belief from even the most gullible traveller. A world first, the palatial ICEHOTEL is constructed purely out of ice and snow every winter, and sits grandly 200km north of the Arctic Circle. A cross between hotel and art installation, the ICEHOTEL is formed from the creative endeavours of artists across the world, who descend when temperatures drop below zero to fashion the creations that comprise the hotel. www.icehotel.com

Sold on Service What do you love most about working in the property industry? The property industry is a true meritocracy – the harder you work, the better you do, and now I have the pleasure that the success Parkheath gains is also spread amongst my staff. My working day can vary from discussing the marketing of a landmark development or motivating my sales team, to formulating our company marketing strategy for the year ahead. As a local boy, at the heart of it all is as always, my love of the area and my love of property.

Tom Gladwin, managing director of Parkheath, talks to Vantage about the challenges and rewards of working in the London property market

What differentiates Parkheath’s approach from that of others in the industry? I think we have an enviable team. Time and time again we are also told our service stands out above our competitors and we are immensely proud of this. We are about to celebrate our 30th year, and felt reaching this grand old age was a good excuse for a bit of a makeover, so we have refreshed the brand logo and offices. In each of our offices you will find the words ‘Sold On Service’, it encapsulates what happy clients say when they write to thank us for selling, letting or managing their properties. It is what our reputation is built on so it seemed right to put it on our walls and on all our advertising. We are also blessed with a team of long serving agents, most of the senior members of staff have been with us for more than 15 years. It’s a rarity in this industry and means our staff are extremely knowledgeable about their specific market. I believe this is why we lead the way in sales and lettings in our areas. Do you personally invest in property? No. I feel that if an owner of an estate agency buys investment properties then the integrity of that agency is compromised. The agent’s aim is to do the very best possible for its client and to buy property in the area in which you operate can only lead to a conflict of interests. I have, however, recently bought and renovated a house, and did so at the time I was telling people to move. I wrote several pieces about the London Market’s Bounce Back and put my own money where my mouth was. What makes the London property market so unique? London was originally made up of small villages, which gradually grew together. This has meant that the desirable locations such as Belsize Park, Hampstead and St John’s Wood can only ever be a finite size. Extra property cannot just be built next door – the postcodes ensure that exclusivity. Demand within these areas is strong and competition between traditional owner occupiers, property investors and developers is fierce. This ensures that prices are kept strong and that rental returns remain dependable. What role does London play in the global property market? London is currently viewed as one of, if not the, best city in the world. The Olympics has showcased how fantastic it is to live here. It is also seen as a safe haven for investors. The resilience the London property market showed at the darkest time of the recent recession has made a huge impact on investors all over the world. At Parkheath we feel very positive about the future. n www.parkheath.com

A heart-warming Halloween recipe. (No cauldron required.)

Halloween Pumpkin Pie Recipe Serves 6 1 x 20cm (8 inch) flan dish Ingredients • 1 x frozen ready rolled shortcrust pastry circle, thawed • 450g (1 lb) pumpkin flesh • 1½ tsp cinnamon • ½ tsp ground ginger • ¼-½ tsp grated fresh nutmeg • 115g (4 oz) caster sugar • 3 eggs • 200ml carton crème fraîche • Decoration: Melted plain chocolate

Method 1. Line the flan dish with the pastry circle and place in the refrigerator to rest. 2. Place the pieces of pumpkin, with the skin on but with the seeds removed, into the half size AGA roasting tin with 2 tablespoons of water and cover with foil. 3. 2, 3 and 4 oven AGA: Slide the tin onto the third set of runners down in the Roasting Oven and steam for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until tender. 4. Scrape the pumpkin flesh into a bowl, discard the skin and mash to a pulp. Add the cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg, mix well. 5. Whisk together the sugar and eggs then whisk in the crème fraîche. Stir in the spiced pumpkin pulp in two lots. Pour into the pastry case. 6. Cook on the floor of the Roasting Oven for about 35-40 minutes until set. 7. Let the flan cool. Pipe a chocolate spider’s web on top. Serve cold with whipped cream. 8. Rayburn cooking: Bake on the floor of the Main Oven at 200¼C (400¼F), Gas Mark 6 for about 35-40 minutes until set. 9. Conventional cooking: Cover the raw pastry case with foil and tip in baking beans, bake ‘blind’ for 15 minutes at 200¼C (400¼F), fan oven 180¼C, Gas Mark 6. 10. Remove the foil and beans then pour in the filling. Reduce the oven to 180¼C (350¼F), fan oven 160¼C, Gas Mark 4 and cook for a further 25 minutes until set.

state of the market

Currently, there is no shortage of good quality homes to rent in the St John’s Wood, Regent’s Park and Hampstead areas, says Marc Schneiderman, director at Arlington Residential At the current time in the £1,000 to £5,000 per week price range – the price bracket in which my firm principally operates – there is a fair amount of choice for tenants. With a reduced number of senior employees in banking and finance relocating to London, the market has softened a little. However, be under no illusion; there is an active and buoyant lettings market with the right homes letting quickly. But what are the right homes? Quite simply, those that are very well presented and which have been maintained to a high standard, coupled with those homes where the landlord is realistic as to their expectations on price and not over-optimistic. Being too bullish on asking price can discourage, not encourage, tenants from taking a property seriously. The bigger picture is, of course, that every week landlords hold out for that over-ambitious rent, they leave their property empty and not income producing. Waiting weeks for that one tenant who may or may not pay an ambitious price can cost tens of thousand of pounds. The majority of clients that my firm deals with in the rental

140

investment market tend to be looking at holding a property on a long term basis, (ten years plus). In the £1.5m-£3m bracket, my advice usually steers clients towards freehold townhouses in the roads close to the American School in St John’s Wood, such as Loudoun Road, Hall Gate, Abbey Road and The Marlowes. Unlike apartments where there can be high service charges that deplete your rental income, the outgoings of freehold houses are minimal. This is certainly not to exclude flats as rental investments, we do have many clients who have made astute purchases in well-managed good quality buildings and have experienced great returns – but consider carefully the service change levels, which from my experience only ever increase. It is not uncommon to pay around £12,000 per annum in service charges for a three-bedroom apartment in a high quality building and this can represent nearly two months rent. At higher investment levels the larger period houses of St John’s Wood, again in locations near the American School and St John’s Wood High Street and the Underground Station, have proven track records as extremely rentable houses. The rental market for four to five bedroom family homes can be very competitive, with the key being able to provide interiors that are refurbished to a high quality and with rents of over £4,000 per week being readily achievable. Aside from the rental yields, capital growth is really where rental investors continue to benefit. With the value of property at the middle to top end of the housing market in central and north west London still steadily rising, and with huge growth over the last two decades, the investors who are the most successful are those that bought and didn’t sell. n Arlington Residential, 8 Wellington Road, NW8 9SP 020 7722 3322 www.arlingtonresidential.com
