he name Florian Leonhard is not one that readily comes to mind, unless you are interested in classical music, and specifically string instruments. Because Leonhard is one of the world’s leading specialists in rare and fine string instruments, and is globally recognised for violin restoration. I first met him when I was invited to a concert at his home. Home is a house in Hampstead where one of his reception rooms, complete with Steinway piano, is frequently used for recitals, and fund raising events. “We usually have at least four a month. This is one of the ways we are able to help talented young artists, by providing them with a venue and audience”. Leonhard also helps set up syndicates to buy instruments that are loaned to up-and-coming artists. “However good an artist is, he or she will always be better if the instrument they are playing is of top quality” he explains. Although it is primarily a philanthropic gesture by the patrons, the scheme is structured so that the artist, over a period of time, can have the opportunity to buy the instrument. At the same time, as the instrument grows in value with age, the investors are able to get a good return, often as much as ten percent, on their investment. Born in West Germany, Florian came from an artistic family where music was an essential part of everyday life. “My mother plays the violin, and from the age of four I was playing the recorder”. By the time he was nine he had progressed to the cello. “We were always having musical soirees”, he recalls. From an early age, he enjoyed repairing things, and used to dream of becoming a violin-maker. At the age of eighteen he gained a place at Mittenwald, recognised in Germany as one of the leading institutions for learning this skill. He was one of only six students chosen from over 1200 applicants. Shortly after graduating, he came to England, joining W. E. Hill & Sons, the leading violin dealership and restoration workshop of its day. Under Hill’s uncompromising methodology, Leonhard

refined his craftsmanship, becoming the workshop’s head restorer in less than three years. Although at that time the company was based in Great Missenden, he used his leisure time to explore the many corners of London. He was particularly attracted to Hampstead. “I grew up in a small village and have always loved the countryside. I fell in love with Hampstead. Its position enables me to be near town, and yet the Heath offers the beauty and tranquillity of the countryside”, he recalls. He was eventually obliged to return to Germany as conscription was still in force in the country in his youth. However, as a pacifist, he was allowed to work in the community with elderly people, rather than enter the Forces. While he enjoyed the experience, his love for London remained. Considered the world centre of expertise for trade, and restoration of string instruments, he felt that it was important for him to be in the capital. He came back, and in 1995, the same year that he married his wife Elizabeth, he started his own business from a flat in West Hampstead. Within a few years his reputation had grown, and his business too. He was able to move to his current home which is closer to the Heath, and has a beautiful enclosed garden, shaded by apple trees. “It’s so quiet here”, he says. “It is like being in the country”. The walls of Leonhard’s home are hung with oils, and water-colours, some painted by his artist father, other by Florian, himself. A key industry figure, Leonhard has conducted extensive research into the violin market and its development. He is often invited to investment conferences to share his knowledge and expertise on investing in violins, violas, and cellos, which are considered lucrative, long-term investments. His artistic talent also includes writing. As a child, he used to write short stories. His book on The Makers of Central Italy, which he published himself, is due out in October. Italy has always been the Mecca of the violinmaking world. The regions of Marche and Umbria, though distinct from the established violin making centres of the

The SAXONIA ANNUAL CALENDAR provides five different time indications at a glance: the time of day, outsize date, day of week, month, and moon phase. The latter, mathematically speaking, only needs to be adjusted by one day every 122 years. This accuracy of 99.998 % is generated by the bidirectional

self-winding movement. All of the 476 individual parts are finished with the utmost care, even the ones you cannot see through the sapphire-crystal caseback. from the editor... Autumn has finally arrived in NW - and we’re loving the dappled russet and orange lights filtering through the trees from the late summer sun. To complement the vibrancy of this new season, this month’s issue is equally colourful and exciting. Taking our inspiration from the late, great Amy Winehouse we have traced the impressive and diverse musical history of North West London from the Beatles to Madness to The Kinks. Find out what was really going on during that infamous zebra crossing shoot and what Johnny Rotten really thought of his flat in Hampstead on p. 18. Continuing the musical theme we meet violin maker Florian Leonhard at his beautiful home and workshop in Hampstead on p. 14, while photographer and local resident Caroline True talks about her fascinating career as a music video producer for Virgin – working with the likes of Prince, George Michael, Peter Gabriel, Janet Jackson, Culture Club and Mariah Carey – on p. 10. Music is also our inspiration for your home this month, with bold brass, stunning gold and black decor and sumptuous fabrics in our Trend pages, (p. 40). And fashion-wise we’ve got one of our most decadent and fabulous shoots for you to feast your eyes on. We’ve teamed up with divine brand BodyAmr and photographer-to-the-stars John Wright to shoot an exclusive spread at the stunning Goldsmiths. Delight yourself on p. 26.

The glam rock approach even continues in our jewellery round-up, indulge your extravagant tendencies on p. 63, while our male readers can pick up some hot tips for autumnal style on p. 65. As the nights draw in and the days get colder, you might start dreaming of sun-filled escapes, and the beautiful Spa Village at Pangkor Laut in Malaysia is the perfect place to go. With a series of signature treatments that channel the powers of traditional healing remedies you will return rejuvenated and awakened (p. 81). For a closer-to-home escape, Longueville Manor in Jersey is a wonderful country retreat (p. 86), while the cosy booths at Roux at the Landau make for a divine night out away from it all (p. 93). Finally, if you’d just prefer to light the fire and curl up on the sofa with someone special, then spend a minute reading about our top tips for autumnal wines to enjoy at home (p. 92); or check out how to emulate a cosy lounging space complete with stunning signature fireplace on p. 44, the essential style for rock and rollers!

have always been drawn professionally to places of adversity,” Caroline tells me, as we sip strong coffee at Ginger & White in Hampstead. “I can’t explain it, but situations and locations where people are in peril or have faced awful violence have a certain resonance for me. And I find I want to tell their story.” This is why music video producer Caroline found herself travelling through America in 2006, armed only with John Lennon’s piano and a camera. Having worked with George Michael for over ten years, Caroline became an integral part of a unique project entitled The Imagine Piano Peace Tour when George Michael bought the piano John Lennon composed ‘Imagine’ on for £1.45m. To this date it is the second most expensive piece of pop memorabilia in the world. “To look at it, you’d think it wasn’t much, a simple small piano with Lennon’s fag burns all over it!” laughs Caroline. “Anyway, George and Kenny Goss had an art gallery in Dallas and were curating an exhibition of three war photographers. They decided to take the piano and put it in situ in this gallery, in amongst the pictures of war and devastation – and people’s reactions to it were amazing. They were fascinated, and moved, by it.” The idea evolved to take the piano on the road to places in America where tragic and violent things have happened, visiting such diverse sites as Waco in Texas, New Orleans, Oklahoma and Virginia Tech. Caroline travelled with the piano across America, taking pictures for George and Kenny, a process which ignited her passion for photography and saw her take two years off to teach herself everything she needed to know about photography and post-production. Now her work centres around portraits, seeking out the unique and interesting in people. “My eye is drawn to finding the beauty in everyone. I’m amazed how many people hate things about themselves and hate having their picture taken. And having seen some awful things, especially having done the piano tour, I appreciate beauty even more. I won’t let the people I take pictures of tell me how they ugly they are. Because there is beauty in everyone, finding it is part of the process.” Aside from working with the likes of Pearl Lowe, Meg

Mathews and George Michael, Caroline also does a lot of reportage and has done some amazing work with charity Strummerville, set up by the friends and family of The Clash lead singer Joe Strummer. “His foundation does some incredible work for new musicians, it’s so exciting working with them. It’s standing by and telling a story, finding people deep in conversation, trusting that the moment the camera clicks you’ve caught something unique.” Caroline admits that she does gravitate towards working with people in the music industry, in one way or another. “It’s always been a part of my life, and was such a huge part of my first career. Those influences will never go away,” she explains. Caroline had always known she wanted to work in the music industry, but finding a way in had proved difficult. Having joined a temping agency to ensure she at least had regular work, her final break came when she was sent to Virgin as a PA for four hours one Friday afternoon. She was still there 20 years later. “I absolutely knew this was my chance,” laughs Caroline. “I walked into that office and I knew I wanted to spend my career there. It was an amazing feeling. And an amazing time for music; Culture Club had just hit Number 1 with ‘Do you really want to hurt me?’, and I was determined to be a part of it. So I set out to make myself indispensable. Whatever happened, this was my way in and wasn’t about to miss the opportunity.” Within a few weeks Caroline had landed herself the full-time PA role to Lisa Andersen, who was the head of the international department at the time. Caroline found the experience of working with Lisa fascinating, exposed to the kind of artists that have now become household names, but her creative side felt like it was lacking something. After a couple of years with Lisa, Caroline moved to the music video department to work as Tessa Watts’ PA, and this is where she felt things started to change. “A year after that Tessa moved to start MTV Europe and I was given her job. I suppose I could have been daunted, but all I could think was that I wanted to do this. And somehow I’d find a way to do it. And that’s been the way I’ve dealt with the whole

11

of my career, even now as a photographer. I want it, that’s all there is. The practical, the logistics – that comes later.” Running the music video department at Virgin exposed Caroline to some of the most exciting opportunities and video shoots of that era, working with music greats including Simple Minds, Culture Club, OMD, Prince, Donny Osmond and, on perhaps her most favourite shoot of all, Peter Gabriel and Youssou n’dour. “We shot the

video for ‘Shakin’ the tree’ in Dakar in Senegal in the summer of 1989. It was such a special shoot to work on, an incredible atmosphere and an amazing experience.” But this was to be Caroline’s last shoot for Virgin; weeks later she left the company and moved to LA to run a production company, eventually staying for four years. Was it a big move? “No, it just felt right. I’d been working in LA so much anyway, and the opportunities were amazing. I went out there to run Limelight, and worked there for about two and half years before being offered the opportunity to run a new company with Jake Scott – Ridley Scott’s son – who I was good friends with at the time. He was a young director and wanted to start a production company as part of his father’s larger commercial operation, and he asked me to run it for him. So we started Black Dog Films together and worked on that for a year and half.” Then it was back to the UK, and working with Nancy Berry who was running a special projects department at Virgin, working with Janet Jackson, The Rolling Stones, George Michael, Lenny Kravitz, Smashing Pumpkins and Mariah Carey, amongst others. This was ten full-on years, says Caroline. “It was 24/7, parties, events, videos, launches, awards – it was busy!” And it might have stayed that way, if it hadn’t been for Caroline finding herself in New York on the morning of 9/11. “I flew in at 3am to shoot a video with Lenny Kravitz, and then everything changed. We could see the towers from Lenny’s balcony, and we saw the second plane and both the towers fall. We were ten blocks away, watching it happen. And that was kind of the end of America for me. I just suddenly wanted to go home. It was just time to come back to England.” Safely back home, Caroline also felt she was ready to leave Virgin and do something different. “It’s a young business, and it needs young people in it. By this point I was 40 and I could either carry on in the industry and be an old rock chick, which I didn’t really want to do, or get out and find a new career.” Having known George Michael since the early nineties, Caroline started working with him on his Patience album in 2001, producing a film about his life called ‘A Different Story’ and shooting the videos for Patience. She then continued to work with him till about 2006 when the John Lennon project took over and Caroline decided she wanted to be a photographer. These days life is very different. She still works with George Michael, taking the stunning shots you see here on a promotional shoot in Paris for his latest tour which comes to London in October, but she is also focused one hundred per cent on her photography. She comes across someone reflective and peaceful. “Maybe it’s because I lived such a luxuriant life for so long, but the places and people that can teach me lessons, they’re what excites and motivates me now – I’d love to do more private commissions, taking pictures of families and individuals. I want to photograph interesting people, it’s not about celebrities, though I work with lots of them. All people’s lives interest me, and it’s what I search for in all the commissions I do.” n www.carolinetrue.com / www.strummerville.com

North, represent an undiscovered wealth of instruments. Florian hopes that the book will improve people’s knowledge and understanding of these important, though relatively unknown, Italian craftsmen. Leonhard is constantly travelling. His work includes assisting many of the world’s leading solo artists including Maxim Vengerov, Nicola Benedetti, Leonidas Kavakos and Natalie Clein in taking care of their instruments. His status as an instrument expert brings him into regular contact with orchestras in the UK, Netherlands, Israel, the Far East and the US. This includes the London Symphony and Tonhalle Orchestras. He is currently expert advisor to the Israel and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. In this role, he helps them purchase, and maintain the instruments of their members. To encourage people to appreciate the instrument, he has also held lectures on the history of violin development, in such cities as Singapore, Moscow, Salt Lake City, and New York. More recently he has attended the Tchaikovsky competition, which was held in St. Petersburg and Moscow, where he was invited by the jury to listen to the participants. He is also a judge in his own right for the Lipinski and Weiniawski International, a competition for young violinists; and the London-based Ernest Bloch Music competition, which forms part of the Israeli Music Competition. Last year, he was a judge in a European violin making in Sofia, Bulgaria. He is always on the lookout for good instruments for his dealership. His London workshop and showroom exhibits some of the finest examples of violins, violas and cellos currently available for sale. In the workshop, he and his co-workers sometimes have the opportunity to dismantle and completely reconstruct a world-class instrument during its renovation. At the moment, they are restoring instruments by Stradivari, Guarneri and Guadagnini. The intricate work allows them to learn exactly how the instruments were made. In this way, they have also been able to make exclusive copies of fine violins, which have mimicked the sound and handling of the originals. Florian is not content with just being top of his field in London. His vision is to expand his business into the Far East and North America. His travel itinerary for this year already includes Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, Hong Kong and New York. As I leave his Hampstead home, we see children playing in the next garden. He and his wife, with their busy lifestyles, have chosen not to have any, although Florian’s legacy as a world authority in fine violin expertise and restoration will no doubt endure. In the house, preparations are being made for a charity recital to raise money for those who suffered in the Sendai tsunami. Florian is very conscious of his good fortune, and encourages people to become more interested in what he believes is the greatest form of music. n

The tragic death of Amy Winehouse left a musical legacy with roots that were firmly planted in the heart of North West London. In a fitting tribute, Max Wooldridge traces the most exciting and suprising aspects of NW’s rock and roll past

T

he late American comedian Bill Hicks once paid homage to The Beatles by saying they must have been high during the recording of theAbbey Road album because they let Ringo Starr sing on a couple of songs. Most Beatles fans, however, pay their respects in more traditional ways – by having their picture taken on the famous Abbey Road’s zebra crossing, or daubing a personal message on the studio’s white perimeter wall. The truth is the Fab Four were barely speaking to each other when they stepped outside Abbey Road studios for the ten minute photo shoot in August 1969. The album’s cover image fuelled rumours that Paul McCartney had died three years earlier and the sleeve was his funeral procession: John Lennon, dressed in white was the priest and Ringo, clad in black, represented an undertaker. McCartney, without shoes and out-of-step, was the deceased. Sure, Macca was barefoot on the cover of Abbey Road, but the Red Hot Chili Peppers went one further in 1988 for an EP sleeve, crossing Abbey Road commando-style with just socks covering their modesty! McCartney’s London home is a short walk from the EMI recording studios, as Abbey Road studios are officially known. He bought the three-story Edwardian house at 7 Cavendish Avenue in 1964, and many of The Beatles most famous songs were written there, both with Lennon and on his own. But there are many more pop music landmarks in northwest London than a zebra crossing in St John’s Wood.

With its plethora of pubs and venues, Camden Town is widely regarded as London’s music capital. It’s now a magnet for indie kids and wannabe musicians in skinny jeans and porkpie hats, but its rock pedigree dates back much further. Punk legends The Clash made use of an alleyway near Camden Lock for the iconic cover of their 1977 debut album. Paul Simonon, Joe Strummer and Mick Jones posed in a stairwell opposite their studios, where they used to rehearse in the old railway yard. Camden is the undoubted kingpin of music venues. Koko, on Camden High Street - formerly the Music Machine and the Camden Palace – is steeped in history, having hosted everyone from Charlie Chaplin to Madonna for her first UK gig. A more recent draw is the Hawley Arms in Castlehaven Road. This was the late Amy Winehouse’s favourite pub, where she drowned her sorrows when she thought her marriage was over. In 2008, the pub suffered a serious fire, producing memorable headlines like: ‘Amy’s Winehouse Burns Down’. Winehouse was in the U.S. accepting a Grammy award when she heard the news. “Camden Town ain’t burning down!” she famously exclaimed to a bemused Los Angeles audience. Although the Camden soul-jazz sensation grew up further north in Southgate – aptly, not far from High Barnet – Winehouse will always be Camden’s most famous musical daughter. Next to the tube station, the Electric Ballroom is easily overlooked by the hordes of tourists who flock up and down Camden High Street; and yet both Sid Vicious and The Pogues, plus hundreds more, have performed on the stage here. At the height of Britpop, Camden became the epicentre of the scene for a year or two. Oasis notwithstanding, Pulp, Suede and Elastica were all based in the area. And after signing their first contract with Food Records, Blur retired to The Good Mixer, in Inverness Street; giving the site an enduring kudos. Camden seven-piece Madness rose to fame with the early 1980s 2-Tone ska revival led by The Specials. They perfected their ‘nutty’ sound – an irresistible fusion of ska, R&B and music hall – in the small back room of the Dublin Castle on Parkway. They also shot the video for My Girl there. This old Victorian pub was an early venue for The Police and is still a great place to catch up-and-coming bands before they get poached by big record labels. The entrance to Chalk Farm Underground station was probably never as congested as when Madness posed outside for the cover of their 1980 release, Absolutely. The Camden pop video pioneers loved to showcase their north London neighbourhood. Their first video, Baggy Trousers, was shot in Kentish Town and saw saxophonist Lee Thompson playing his instrument whilst airborne at Islip Street school in Kentish Town. One Better Day, was filmed in Camden, and saw the band kitted out as vagrants, while Denyer House, in Highgate Road, featured in the House of Fun video. However, it was Pink Floyd and the Soft Machine who performed at Camden’s first major rock gig in 1966. It was

held at The Roundhouse, a former Gilbey’s Gin warehouse and converted former railway engine shed at the top of Chalk Farm Road. Bang up to date, Amy Winehouse made her final appearance here on 20 July this year, dancing with her singer goddaughter Dionne Bromfield just three days before she died. Few London neighbourhoods can claim a richer rock heritage than lush Primrose Hill. You can’t blame The Rolling Stones for looking a bit ropey on the cover of their 1967 release, Between the Buttons. Photographer Gered Mankowitz dragged them up here on a cold November morning in 1966 after an all-night recording session.
Predictably Madness were amongst others who made it

far further up the hill than ‘Mick ‘n’ Keef’. For the cover of 1982’s concept album about London life, The Rise And Fall – which aptly features a song called Primrose Hill - the Nutty Boys were photographed at the top. They also name-checked the location again on their single Driving In My Car. Paul McCartney penned The Beatles’ classic Fool on the Hill after a fleeting morning encounter with a mysterious man who then disappeared, while Blur flew kites here on the black and white video for the 1993 single For Tomorrow. The song includes the line: “Let’s take a drive to Primrose Hill, it’s windy there and the view is so nice”. Blur’s Britpop rivals, Oasis, shot the cover for the single Wonderwall on Primrose Hill. Of course, rock stars wouldn’t be rock stars without

brushes with the law - or buildings. Very early one morning in July 2010, singing legend George Michael was arrested - and later charged - with possession of cannabis and driving under the influence after crashing his Range Rover in Hampstead. Nowadays Hampstead may be a magnet for music millionaires like George Michael, but it once also attracted the mad, bad and dangerous to know. Before they performed together in the Sex Pistols, Johnny Rotten shared a squat with fellow Pistol Sid Vicious in the Grade II-listed Victorian tenement block, New Court, in Lutton Terrace, near the elegant Georgian townhouses of Flask Walk. The actor Peter Barkworth was their cheerful neighbour and used to wave at them while he pruned his begonias. Rotten later reported that, despite a lack of running water, the place was ‘better than home’. New Court is rather different today and boasts luxury flats with price tags to match the postcode. Nearby, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards lodged together at 10A Holly Hill between 1964 and 1965. Three years later they returned to the area to shoot their Beggars Banquet photo shoot. The scenes depicted on the inner gatefold sleeve were taken inside Sarum Chase on Hampstead Heath’s West Heath Road. The late cult singer-songwriter Nick Drake is also seen walking down to the pond at Hampstead Heath on the back cover of his 1994 compilation Way To Blue, a stone’s throw from where he lived during his time in London. Onto Highgate, where punk svengali and impresario Malcolm McLaren was laid to rest in the famous cemetery in April 2010. Highgate Cemetery is also linked to gravel-voiced Rod Stewart – born at the family home at 507 Archway Road in January 1945, Rod once had a summer job as a gravedigger in the cemetery’s eastern part.

feature

Nearby Highgate Hill was immortalised by Ray Davies in 1998’s London Song: “If you’re ever up on Highgate Hill on a clear day, you can see right down to Leicester Square.” A few decades earlier Davies and his other Kinks appeared on both the cover and gatefold sleeve of their 1971 Muswell Hillbillies album, a homage to the Beverly Hillbillies TV show. They are pictured inside The Archway Tavern, off Highgate Hill which is the same pub they signed their first recording contract in. Finally, onto Muswell Hill itself and tree-lined Fortis Green, where Dave and Ray Davies grew up. Frequently dubbed England’s greatest songwriter, Ray Davies was born in a Victorian semi-detached house, 6 Denmark Terrace, a real musical home, complete with singing parents and piano in the corner. It was here, in 1964, that Ray and brother Dave worked out the distorted guitar chords to their classic You Really Got Me, the song that first put them at the top of the charts and would influence so many other musicians to pick up a guitar. Opposite their house stands The Clissold Arms pub, where The Kinks first performed. Even today it’s full of fabulous Kinks memorabilia. It’s a shame John Lennon didn’t drive his white Rolls-Royce round this part of North West London. He preferred places like Regent’s Park, probably because his car had a special PA system fitted so he could shout at passers-by. He once startled Rolling Stone Brian Jones by yelling out, ‘You are under arrest!’ This is not quite as famous a musical pilgrimage as doing the Abbey Road crossing, but let’s hope it catches on! n

Cochinechine is easily one of North West London’s most popular and treasured boutiques and has developed a host of loyal regulars looking for pieces by both emerging and established designers. Now, owing to popular demand, the store has launched an e-boutique which makes it even easier to seek out statement pieces. Partner and buyer Melanie Chan says: “The products are handpicked by my partner and I, we think fashion is for pleasure, it does not dictate our lives so we buy clothes that can be lived in, laughed in and fallen in love with!” 74 Heath Street, NW3 1DN www.cochinechine.com

Introducing Jexica We’re always eager to hear about the latest fashion design talent and we know our stylish readers will love the debut womenswear collection from Jessica Rampezzotti, which caught our eye this month. The Milan-born creator has embraced a glamorous yet classic aesthetic through bodycon dresses, pencil skirts and lace embellishment and ensured each item exudes a sense of Italian luxury. The colour palette for this first drop? A striking yet elegant scarlet, black and nude.

His Shoes Despite being a much-lauded shoe designer with an A-list following, it’s not your average man behind the label. As Nicholas Kirkwood opens his new store on Mayfair’s exclusive Mount Street, he talks to Elle Blakeman about footwear inspiration, loud music and why women refuse to give up the platform

I

t’s a stiflingly hot day in London when I meet Nicholas Kirkwood at his über-chic new store in Mount Street, Mayfair’s most élite road. He leads me through the light-filled, airy space stacked with stunning heels at every turn, as I try not to get distracted and instead focus on where I am putting my now rather boringly clad feet (peach cut-out heels, for the record). We reach the basement of this beautiful Grade-II listed building, a Geppetto’s workshop of sorts, and Kirkwood politely apologises for the heat: “We have air-con upstairs in the shop, but it doesn’t quite stretch to down here,” he says. I am astounded at how down-to-earth the man himself is. After all, this is the designer who has won countless awards in his short career, including the prestigious Accessory Designer of the Year award at the 2010 British Fashion Awards; he is the designer openly praised by Manolo Blahnik for his unique style; and last, but by no means least in this celebrity-driven world, he decorated Sarah Jessica Parker’s famous-in-their-own-right feet in her Sex and the City 2 tour – surely the most watched soles on the planet.

interview

So how did this ordinary man rise up to become such an insider name in just six short years? The answer, of course, is that he’s anything but ordinary. Having studied fine art at Central St. Martin’s and unsure about what direction to take, the young Kirkwood went to work with hat designer, Philip Treacy. “Women would bring in these fantastic outfits and I would try to find a hat to match. At the time there were some amazing things happening with clothes – McQueen, Hussein Chalayan – but the shoes were really dull, as if from another decade. I knew I liked accessories, and I just thought that there was a lot more that could be done with shoes. So I looked into a course in London and I ended up at Cordwainers.” This ‘thought’ paid off, as the industry quickly sat up and took note of his innovative, architectural designs, earning him several emerging designer awards. His pioneering approach to shoe design, and the materials manipulated to make them, from degradé silks to shaved stingray and rubberised leather, showed that this was not a man who shied away from a challenge. So where does the inspiration for these ground-breaking – literally – designs come from? “I just sit down with a pad of paper and a cup of tea and some really loud music”, [electro or rock, if you’re interested] “and just start doodling. Then I’ll see something else that will take it in a new direction and eventually at some point you’ve got to stop and say, ‘Okay, I better start making them now’.” Does he pay attention to what’s going on in the industry when designing? “Obviously I consider the seasons, but I then just do what I enjoy. When I started out I really looked up to people like Roger Vivier, Andre Perugia and Ferragamo. They were really pushing boundaries and doing incredible things, and the technologies they were using at the time were really new.” This desire to constantly create something fresh is evident throughout his collections. “I have just been working with the Keith Haring foundation, incorporating his artwork into a mini couture collection, [which has now gone to exhibition]... Because his shapes are so bold, I thought it would be really interesting to see if you could take that artwork and use it in a different way, and not just on a flat surface.” Kirkwood clearly believes that two heads are better than one, with a long list of collaborations behind him. “Shoes lend themselves to collaborations as they are an accessory to the rest of the outfit, so in a way I’m always collaborating. It allows me to do something I wouldn’t normally do in my own collection. So working with Rodate it could be doing a candlewax heel, or big studs and spikes. These are things that I would never put in my own collection because it goes outside the look I’m trying to get, but at the same time I really enjoyed doing it.” As any dedicated shoe shopper will tell you, heels have become increasingly vertiginous thanks to the platform, the popularity of which had shown no sign of waning until recently, when Tom Ford declared: “When a woman looks like she has copies of the Oxford English Dictionary attached

concierge

to her feet, it’s time for the fashion pendulum to swing the other way”. Where Tom Ford goes, the industry follows, so how does Kirkwood feel about the potential impending death of the platform? “I’ve been doing that for years but the problem is no one is buying them!” he says. “There’s definitely a push from the press and certain designers are trying to go lower, but the problem is that women have become used to that extra inch or two and they are reluctant to give it up. They don’t want to be shorter.” It is this knowledge of what women want that has made him so successful. Rather than simply picturing a red-carpetsauntering A-lister, Kirkwood identifies various scenarios and personalities, bringing his work to life. “I imagine all different types of women in my shoes, so ‘the department store girl’ or ‘the downtown hip girl’. I don’t have a celebrity muse.” And yet celebrities still flock to the brand. “There are some really cool women out there wearing my shoes – Julianne Moore, Sarah Jessica Parker, Beyoncé…” Does this unaffected designer ever get excited to see his creations being worn? “When I started I thought, that’ll be the best thing ever to see someone in your shoes, and then at a party someone said: ‘She’s wearing your shoes!’” So, awards, glamour and now one of the chicest shoe shops around – with floors designed by Richard Woods, who Nicholas lived with in his Philip Treacy days: “I saw what he did at the late Isabella Blow’s house and I thought that it would be perfect for the shop” – what does rest of 2011 hold for the brand? “A couple of collaborations will come out next year, plus we’re bringing out a men’s collection, and potentially bags as well. Oh, and we’re going to open a store in New York.” “Where in New York?” I enquire; after all, Mount Street is fairly hard to top. He ponders for a moment. “I’m not sure. But it will be somewhere good,” he says, smiling. I have no doubt it will. n www.nicholaskirkwood.com

The Full Body Experience By the time of my appointment I’d already enjoyed the steam room, taken a dip in the warm hydrotherapy pool and reclined on a relaxation bed while drinking fresh fruit juice – all in the name of research. The spa is by far one of the most stunning I’ve visited and a must-try for seasoned treatment devotees - it’s something different and very special. The therapist was warm and friendly and talked through my requirements for the treatment, but what really sets this place apart is the quality of the massage and scrub. Ushvani was set up by a Malaysian lawyer seeking a high standard of Asian therapies in the capital and attention to detail is paramount here. The scrub left my skin feeling super soft, an outcome intensified by the wrap I had at the end of the session. Ushvani Spa is a real indulgence!

In your hands For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, running throughout October, Dr Anderson at The Wellington Hospital takes us through the key things you need to know

In the UK, 50,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed every year with 12,000 people dying from the disease. There are around half a million people living in the UK today who have had a diagnosis of breast cancer. 80 per cent of breast cancers occur in women over 50, but it is also seen in much younger women and in men. Breast tissue is made up of glandular, fibrous and fatty tissue. The glandular tissue contains lobes, with many smaller lobules inside each one which produce milk. Breasts change throughout life due to the varying levels of oestrogen and progesterone in the body at different ages. Many women notice that just before a period, their breasts feel heavier and fuller and may be tender and feel lumpy. After a period the lumpiness tends to lessen and hence this is a good time to examine your breasts. Some women experience breast pain linked to their menstrual cycle, this is known as cyclical breast pain. Breast changes can be an early sign of pregnancy. It is not uncommon to feel a tingling sensation or soreness of the breast, particularly the nipples. The pigmented area, called the areola gets bigger and both this and the nipple darken. After birth because the breast produces large amounts of milk the size of the breast can change several times a day. When breastfeeding ceases breasts return to their pre-pregnancy state but may be less firm and a different size than before. From the mid-30s onwards the breasts begin to age and the glandular tissue is gradually replaced by fat. As oestrogen levels fall during and after the menopause the breasts may change size and feel softer. Being Breast Aware is vital for all women (and also for men

where there is a strong family history). There are five easy steps to being breast aware, known as the Five Point Code. 1. Know what is normal for you 2. Know what to look and feel for 3. Look and feel 4. Report any changes to your GP without delay 5. Attend routine breast screening when invited (The age is being reduced to between 47 and 49 and extended to age 71-73 as digital mammography is introduced.) Remember there is no one who knows your breasts better than you, so try to get used to looking and examining them regularly, usually a few days after your period has finished. Check all parts of your breast, your armpits and up to your collar bone.

With breast cancer being one of the most highly diagnosed cancers among women, not only is it imperative for women to regularly check their breasts, but to have easy access to first-rate services too. Later this month The Wellington Hospital opens their Breast Cancer Unit, where patients will be offered a premium service, delivered by leading consultants in the breast cancer field. The team will consist of breast surgeons, reconstructive breast surgeons, oncologists, radiologists and breast cancer nurse specialists. This one stop clinic will be supported by the latest imaging technology, which is vital for early detection and improving outcomes. Using this cutting-edge imaging equipment will reduce the number of times patients need to be scanned, decrease waiting times and speed up diagnosis. This service will be available at The Wellington Hospital south building, with digital mammography also available at The Wellington Diagnostics and Outpatients Centre, Golders Green.

Look for the following changes: • Changes in size or shape • Changes in skin texture such as dimpling or puckering • Inverted nipple or pulled in a different position (inverted nipples are normal in some women so look for a change) • Nipple discharge from one or both • Redness or a rash on the skin/around the nipple • Thickening or a lump in the breast tissue • Constant pain in the breast or armpit • Swelling in the armpit or around the collarbone To arrange an appointment with Dr Anderson please call 020 7483 5148 Useful links: www.breastcancercare.org.uk, www.cancerscreening.nhs.uk

STEP 1: Stand in front of a mirror and compare both breasts for any difference in size, and any skin or nipple changes as mentioned above. Inspect your breasts with your arms at your sides, over your head, with your hands on your hips pressing firmly to flex the chest muscles and bent forward. In these positions, your pectoral muscles are contracted, and a subtle dimpling of the skin may appear if a growing tumour has affected a ligament. STEP 2: Examine standing up. Raise one arm and place behind the head, with the other hand keep your fingers flat and check the opposite breast. Feel the breast with the surfaces of the second, third and fourth fingers moving systematically and using small circular motions from the nipple to the outer part of the breast and up into the armpit. Use light, medium and firm pressure over each area of the breast. Gently squeeze the nipple to see of there is any discharge. Repeat on the other breast. STEP 3: Repeat the above examination lying down.

a very fine art Michael Elton, art curator for the Platinum Medical Centre, explains how he chose the finishing touches for the interior of the new building quick to declare the decision-making process to be smooth and enjoyable. Such success is evident in the array of beautiful pictures, from swirling digital photographs in the Imaging Department by local artist Ruth Corman, to original stone printed lithographs from artists across Europe and beyond.

are from a company I work closely with in Copenhagen and are by a mix of artists from Scandinavia, Holland, Germany and US. To supplement these, we specifically chose works by British artists such as Anthony Frost as well as David Breuer-Weil’s paintings.”

With work of such an important and sensitive nature undertaken at The Wellington Hospital’s new Platinum Medical Centre, it could not have been more crucial to make the environment as inviting and interesting as possible. For this reason, renowned art dealer Michael Elton was the man entrusted with choosing the paintings and prints which adorn many of the communal areas. Michael progressed into the field following his organisation of several hugely successful photographic exhibitions, including rock and roll themed presentations of the work of Elliott Landy and Daniel Kramer. He was keen to take on the project. “I think art for a medical centre needs to be uplifting,” he explains. “Bearing in mind the absolute modernity of the Platinum Medical Centre, I wanted very contemporary and vibrant works which I thought would reflect its forward thinking attitude.” Michael’s clear vision was shared by the team at The Wellington and he is

The effect is an ambience which perfectly complements each department and pieces which are admired by staff and patients alike. “The reaction has been extremely positive,” says Michael. “I’ve found nurses standing in front of David’s works discussing the seascapes they feature and his use of paint. He’s used the foregrounds as palettes and layered on the paints using mixed media articles like paint brushes and plastic plates so they get a very enthusiastic reaction. And I’ve had a couple of patients contact me about the digital photos in the imaging department as well as regarding the other works.”

David Breuer-Weil Central to this art collection of the Platinum Medical Centre are six seascapes by artist, David BreuerWeil. Whilst the majority of his work is representational, the pieces chosen for this building come from his Vogue Landscapes series. Landscape has always formed part of David’s style and he manages to capture the movement and beauty of his surroundings in unique ways. For the Vogue series, the colour palette is applied directly to the canvas and then distributed. This gives each design a highly textured and interesting surface which encourages viewers to engage with the paintings. His use of brushstrokes across the canvas also enhances this mixed media effect. David’s work is exhibited across galleries and private spaces in London and is highly regarded, not least by the team at the Platinum Medical Centre, who appreciate the sense of energy and vibrancy which his pieces inject into their surroundings.

Michael and other visitors agree; it is easy to see that such special finishing touches contribute to a great working atmosphere for the staff and a happy environment for the recovery of the patients.

“The quality of the prints is fantastic,” says Michael. “I think having original paintings of this quality leads beautifully into the lithographs and makes a very clear display. The prints

The TimeWriter

190 years after the invention of the chronograph, Montblanc pays homage to the art of time measurement with the Nicolas Rieussec Horological TimeWriter

n 1821 a French watchmaker was tasked by his King with inventing an instrument that would record the exact times run by horses in a race and Nicolas Rieussec succeeded, creating the world’s first chronograph. 190 years later, in 2011, Montblanc is celebrating that invention with the exquisite Nicolas Rieussec Horological TimeWriter anniversary set. Encased in a glass dome, the 19 kilogram table-top chronograph remains true to Rieussec’s early designs by employing a push button mechanism and rotating disks to act as a stop clock, while Montblanc’s watch-winder keeps

watches powered by an electric motor (produced by a company commissioned by NASA to provide motors for Mars expeditions). Completing the set is a limited edition 18 carat rose gold version of the Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Automatic, a collection that caught the imagination of the watch industry, when it launched three years ago, by measuring instances of time with rotating disks rather than conventional rotating hands. If you’re harbouring visions of the TimeWriter on your mantle-piece, join the queue. Only 19 of the set were made and many were snapped up immediately after the launch earlier this year. n

Swiss exports soar While some luxury sectors continue to struggle with the effects of the recession, the watch industry is going from strength to strength. Exports of high-end Swiss-manufactured timepieces in the first half of 2011 recorded a 19.3 per cent increase on the same period a year earlier. A figure that places the sector above 2008’s previous benchmark result,

the value of Switzerland’s watch export industry between January 2011 and June 2011 stood at almost £6.8 billion. While all of Switzerland’s watch export markets witnessed a positive trend, it was Hong Kong that placed the highest order, followed by USA and China.

The Jewel in the City’s Crown Collectors from around the globe will flock to Goldsmiths’ Fair this month as the historic company presents one of the most prestigious events of its kind in Europe, and an exciting insight into the intriguing world of fine jewellery. Richard Brown reports

H

aving played an integral part in London Jewellery Week 2011 in June when it hosted The Goldsmiths’ Pavillion at Treasure – a selling exhibition demonstrating contemporary UK jewellery talent – The Goldsmiths’ Company will once again showcase the country’s flair for jewellery design when its annual Goldsmiths’ Fair commences at the end of this month. Established in 1983, Goldsmiths’ Fair has grown in stature to become what is now considered the ultimate one-stop destination for those seeking contemporary jewellery and silver by the most exciting independent designers in the UK. For two weeks, 180 designers, including ten recent graduates, will descend upon Goldsmiths’ Hall to present their latest collections. The result promises to be a dazzling display of virtuoso jewellery and silverware. Set in Goldsmiths’ Hall, located in the heart of the City and on a site that the company has owned since 1339, the exhibition takes place against a background steeped in history. As the medieval guild for goldsmiths, as well as silversmiths and jewellers, The Goldsmiths’ Company has been responsible for authenticating the standard of precious

metals since the 14th century. In fact, the word ‘hallmarking’ arises from the fact that such metals were inspected and marked at Goldsmiths’ Hall. 684 years after Edward III marked the beginning of the company’s formal existence as a craft guild, Goldsmiths’ continues as one of the few Livery Companies still carrying out its ancient functions, testing and marking objects made of precious metals above certain purities from its London Assay Office. Honouring this celebrated history, Goldsmiths’ Fair provides a platform for talent, passion, creativity, innovative design and superlative craftsmanship. Forget mass production; the selling event, which is open to the public, is centred on the bespoke and the original, with each piece on show having been hand-made by dedicated craftsmen in small workshops around the country. As well as providing the opportunity for visitors to become the owner of a bespoke piece of fine jewellery, the Fair encourages interaction with designers who will be explaining their techniques and inspiration. The two-way interaction adds a vital personal element to the whole process of buying, as well as making the experience enlightening and educational. “The Fair is a hugely important event

to many designer-makers,” points out Paul Dyson, Director of Promotion. “It presents an invaluable opportunity in terms of experience, exposure and direct contact with clients. Equally significant are the huge benefits the makers gain from exhibiting together, not only in terms of camaraderie but also through networking and the sharing of ideas and skills.” Running from 26 September to 9 October, Goldsmiths’ Fair has become a must-visit for both in-the-know jewellery enthusiasts and collectors, looking to add bespoke, signature pieces to their collection. Whether you wish to acquire treasured one-of-a-kind gifts, statement silver pieces for the home, future heirlooms for the family, or cufflinks and silver accessories for men and fabulous jewellery for women, the Fair won’t disappoint. Make an investment in pieces that will only increase in value thanks to the combination of precious metals and superlative bespoke design, or simply head to Goldsmiths’ to get your Christmas shopping done early. n Goldsmiths’ Fair 26 September-2 October and 4-9 October Open 11am-7pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am-6pm, Saturday and Sunday www.thegoldsmiths.co.uk

Life

in the fast lane

Matthew Carter talks to motor racing legend Sir Stirling Moss about retirement, modern F1, London and how he got that name

F

or most 81-year-olds, a drive in the country usually means a gentle run in a family hatchback down a leafy B-road on a summer afternoon. For Sir Stirling Moss OBE, however, it means racing his Porsche RS61 in the Le Mans Legends event. Or rather, it used to mean racing at Le Mans. This year Moss drove back to the pits in the middle of qualifying, got out of the car and announced his retirement. “I scared myself and I always said that if I felt I was not up to it or that I was getting in

the way of fellow competitors, then I would retire,” he said. The decision brought to an end a remarkable career that began in 1948 when he was just 18. Between then and 1962 he took part in 529 races, winning 212 of them. He won the British Grand Prix twice and the Monaco Grand Prix three times. He also won the great road races of the era – the Mille Miglia and the Targa Florio – as well as top sports car races like the Tourist Trophy. Just about the only race he didn’t win was the Le Mans 24 Hours. “I hated Le

Mans. Back then it wasn’t a race… I was a racing driver yet I was being told to drive carefully rather than race. I was told not use too many revs to preserve the engine, to be gentle with the brakes. I couldn’t be doing with that. These days, it is most definitely a race.” Moss never won the Formula 1 World Championship either. He got closest in 1958 when he missed the title by one point. He won the last race of the season but the six points Mike Hawthorn claimed for coming second was enough to give his British rival

motoring

the title, even though Moss won four races that season to Hawthorn’s one. He never got as close again, finishing third in the title fight in 1959, 1969 and 1961 largely because he preferred to drive British cars, even if they were outclassed by the German or Italian opposition. He said at the time: “It’s better to lose honourably in a British car than win in a foreign one.” Today he explains his rationale. “You’ve got to remember that back then memories of the war were still fresh in people’s minds and patriotism was all important. Whenever I could I drove British.” His top-flight career finished, however, at Goodwood in 1962, when he had a high speed accident in a Lotus. The crash put him in a coma for a month, partially paralysed the left side of his body for six and led to his (first) retirement. Even though he was no longer an active racing driver, his name remained a byword for speed. Time after time police would stop an errant motorist with the words: “Who do you think

Even though he was no longer an active racing driver, his name remained a byword for speed you are, Stirling Moss?” It even happened to Moss himself, “though I’m not sure whether the policeman was taking the piss or not.” Was he speeding? “Er, can’t remember,” comes the cautious reply. Either way, he has his father to thank for ‘the greatest advert’ he could have wished for, his memorable moniker. “My mother wanted to call me Hamish,” he recalls, “but my father, thankfully, wouldn’t hear of it. I was named after my mother’s home town in Scotland.” Sir Stirling made a racing comeback in 1980 driving an Audi in the British Touring Car Championship alongside team-mate, a young Martin Brundle. It was not a success. “The worst decision I ever made. It was the first time I’d raced a front-wheel drive car and my first time on slick tyres.” More success – and much more fun – came with a subsequent move to historic racing, Moss campaigning the sort of cars he raced when they were new.

Although he has now announced his (second) retirement, he won’t stray too far from the racetrack, remaining an insightful commentator on modern F1. “This season seems to be very exciting though I do worry there are too many ‘gizmos’ that can affect the result, such as the moveable wings and so on.” But he is a fan of KERS – the Kinetic Energy Recovery System, which uses energy created under braking to recharge a battery-powered electric motor to give a brief burst of extra power for overtaking. “It’s something for nothing, isn’t it? Every road car will have a similar system in the near future,” he says. Speaking of road cars, Moss has always preferred small city cars when driving around London. He was one of the first to own a Mini back in the Sixties and today has just presented Lady Moss – his wife Susie – with a compact Aston Martin Cygnet which wears his famous number plate SM 7. And he remains resolutely a Londoner. Not even at the height of his fame was he tempted to move to a tax haven overseas. “Good heavens, no. London is the centre of the world. It was, and is, the only place to live.” Sir Stirling has lived in Mayfair since the 1950s and built his current house on Shepherd Street in the early 60s. “I was very fortunate to get one of the last bomb sites in the centre of Mayfair, south facing and in a cul de sac, where I was able to build my house.” Famously full of high-tech gadgets, it was here that Moss had another, more recent, accident. He went to step into the lift but it had failed to arrive and he fell to the bottom of the shaft, damaging his ankles. “Susie was magnificent. She ran down the stairs almost as fast as I fell to comfort me. I was very fortunate that an ambulance was in the neighbourhood and whisked me to hospital in no time.” Now fully recovered, he continues to do demonstration runs at events like the Goodwood Revival. Sir Stirling also took part in this year’s Chelsea AutoLegends, an event of which he is the Patron. Held in the grounds of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea – home of the Chelsea Pensioners – the show provides a remarkable showcase of some of the most iconic competition cars and bikes ever built, including Le Mans racers,

historic rally cars, supercars and classic bikes. “I went to the first AutoLegends show last year and loved it. There were so many fabulous cars and familiar faces there, that I was delighted when they asked me to be Patron this year.” He might have retired, but Sir Stirling shows no sign of slowing down. n www.chelseaautolegends.com

The Four Deserts If you’ve ever run the London Marathon, you know the pain that comes with doing so. Now imagine running six times that distance over seven days in temperatures that can reach 50°C. Taking competitors across 250km of one of the hottest places on the planet, the Sahara Race marks the fourth phase of the 2011 Four Deserts challenge – the world’s leading rough-country endurance footrace series. Only 11 competitors have completed the Four Deserts Grand Slam, which is to complete all Four Deserts in a calendar year. Anyone wanting to become the twelfth member this year will have already completed the Atacama Desert in Chile and the Gobi Desert in China. 2 - 9 October www.4deserts.com/sahararace

Euro 2012 Qualifiers Next summer promises to be an exciting time for sports fans. Just weeks before British athletes take to the track in search of gold at the Olympic Games, Poland and Ukraine will play host to the 2012 European Football Championships. For those who haven’t secured their place at their tournament, October will represent the last chance to do so. For those already qualified, it will be the time to begin preparations. www.uefa.com/uefaeuro2012

With the Olympic London 2012 Games inching ever closer, Lee Brooks kicks off a series of features looking ahead to the global showpiece by speaking to some of Britain’s budding young stars

Tom Daley Sport: Diving Age in 2012: 18 Career Highlights: 2010 individual and synchro Commonwealth champion 2009 10-metre platform world champion 2008 10-metre platform European champion The average 17-year-old boy has plenty to worry about. There’s learning to drive, passing A-Levels, getting into university and making plenty of time for mates, specifically girls. Plymouth-born Tom Daley is no different, aside from the fact that he happens to be one of the world’s best divers and needs to fit a world-class training schedule in alongside all of the above. “It’s just a matter of keeping my social life separate from my school life and both of those separate from my diving life. They’re pretty much all different worlds,” says Daley. “Plus, I’m lucky to have my family and the agency to help me organise everything.” Having made his entrance on the biggest stage in the world at the Beijing Olympics three years ago, as a babyfaced 14-year-old, Daley is used to the attention and the pressure that comes with it. Though he failed to win medals in China, the diving prodigy went on to become world champion a year later and double Commonwealth gold medallist last October, despite being about five years

Aaron Cook Sport: Taekwondo, Under-80kg Age in 2012: 21 Career Highlights: 2010 European senior champion 2008 World junior champion 2007 European junior champion Youth Olympics champion Inspired by hit American kids TV show Power Rangers, Dorchester-born Aaron Cooke persuaded his parents to take him down to a local Taekwondo club that was opening in his home town. Some 15 years later, he has won world junior and European senior titles, come incredibly close to an Olympic medal in the Beijing Games when he came fourth and held the number one world ranking in the Under-80kg category. His progress stalled this year when he was knocked out of May’s World Championships in South Korea in

younger than nearly all his major rivals. “Last year was amazing for me. The Commonwealths gave me so much confidence and it felt really good knowing that I can pull through a major event and deal with the pressure.” This year has been a roller-coaster one for Daley, though. In May, he tragically lost his father Rob, who had played a massive role in his life and his career, to cancer after a fiveyear battle. But Tom battled on to compete in the World Championships as defending champion and finished fifth with a series of new, more difficult dives. In August, he got his A-Level results – a B in maths, A in Spanish and A* in photography – to show that he’s got brains to match his immense amount of diving talent. Just talking to Daley, it’s immediately clear that he’s well practised at dealing with pressure while keeping his mind on the job – not something many teenagers can manage quite so well. “There’s always going to be pressure when I’m competing but it’s about using it to my advantage,” he says. “I’m extremely competitive. I want to win everything, whether it’s on the diving board or against my brothers, friends and family.” With that kind of steely determination, solid experience on the Olympic stage and a raft of high-scoring dives getting finishing touches, Daley is primed to lead British sport into a golden generation. Tom Daley is part of the BMW London 2012 Performance Team. For more information see www.bmw.co.uk/London2012

the first round, which dropped him to number four in the world and he took a massive gamble by quitting the British training programme a month later. In doing so he sacrificed lottery funding, but Cook is adamant he’s made the right decision. “I’m feeling determined and excited about my future,” he says. “I don’t regret my decision and psychologically, I’m feeling happy because I can now control my destiny.” Cook is training in a purpose-built shed in his back garden, which his dad originally built a few years ago in case he needed any extra practice, but which now acts as his main training base. Despite these difficult circumstances, Cook, who has often said he wants to be remembered as “one of the greatest of all time”, remains confident he can secure gold in 2012. “Obviously, the first task is to ensure I get selected,” he says, “but once that’s confirmed, I can switch my focus to that gold medal. I’ve learnt a lot from what happened in Beijing. I’ve worked hard since then, so it’s time to deliver.”

RACHEL CAWTHORN Sport: Sprint Canoeing Age in 2012: 23 Career Highlights: 2010 European K1 1000m champion 2010 world K1 500m bronze medallist Rachel Cawthorn is evidence that it’s worth paying attention during school assembly. Then 15-years-old, Rachel decided to attend trials with British canoeing scouts after they’d given a talk one morning and seven years later, she’s a genuine medal contender for 2012. Of course, there’s been a lot of hard work in between, but as a result of a gruelling schedule – she trains three times a day, six days a week – Cawthorn won her first European title in the 1,000 metre sprint kayak event last year and followed that up by becoming the first British female to win a medal at a World Championship, with bronze in the 500 metres. While London will be her first Games, the 22-year-old went out to Beijing with the Olympic Ambitions programme

Shanaze Reade Sport: BMX Cycling Age in 2012: 23 Career Highlights: 2010, 2008 and 2007 BMX world champion 2008 and 2007 world team sprint champion They say defeat makes us stronger and when it comes to BMX star Shanaze Reade, they couldn’t be more right. The then 18-year-old rider arrived in Beijing with one hand on the Olympic title: she’d already won the world title two years running and was in supreme form compared to her rivals, despite her young age. But an overambitious move in the final saw her crash out in agony and walk away without a

76

to get a sense of what it’s like to compete in such a huge event. “It was incredible,” she says. “Obviously it’ll be different in London because we’ll have a home crowd but hopefully I’ll feel better prepared because I know what to expect, so I can just go in there and get on with the job.” Her winter training was hit by injury, which has in turn seen her struggle to replicate her best form. However, she bounced back to qualify the K4 (four-person) boat for London with a fourth-place finish at the 2011 World Championships and still hopes to qualify for the K1 individual event. For now, it’s all about training at Dorney Lake, the venue for the 2012 canoeing events, and Cawthorn is confident the experience will provide vital for London 2012. “I think it’ll be a massive advantage. I know that all my rivals will get the chance to train on the lake at some point before the Games but we’ve been training there for ages. Every course is different, so getting used to the water and the conditions will be really helpful.” Tesco is the official sponsor of GB Canoeing and proud to support Rachel Cawthorn

medal. The anguish moments after was painful viewing but her response to the defeat shows maturity. “I thought I was going to win and so did everybody else,” says Reade, “so the pressure was difficult to deal with. I was young but I’ve grown up a hell of a lot since. What happened there was a lesson in disguise because it highlighted my weaknesses and I’ve been working to eradicate them ever since.” A shoulder injury meant Shanaze couldn’t defend her world title in 2009 but she came back to win her third title in four years in 2010. Things didn’t go so well in the 2011 event, though, as she slipped on a pedal at the start and failed to reach the final. Again, she bounced back, romping to victory in the London 2012 test event in August with a flawless ride. “What better way to prepare for the Olympics?” she said after the win. What better way, indeed? n

T

he south of France as a geographical entity needs little superfluous entrée, for it sits regally on Mediterranean shores in quiet confidence. We know all too well that its pastel landscapes, healthy cuisine and old charm, as well as its class, temperate climes, wafts of lavender and overall ambience of ease, have long been a pull for the British holidaymaker with taste. Indeed it also attracts the odd errant British emigrant in search of a life more sublime. But how does one go about benefitting from the region’s elegance with the family in tow? Well, you might well consider, as I did, a week at Four Seasons Provence at Terre Blanche, nestled in the hinterland of Tourrettes in the Var department. This modern, chic, child-friendly resort is set in the picturesque hills that are too often overlooked in favour of the more obvious coastal areas below such as Cannes and St. Tropez. Four Seasons is a Canadian-grown hotel group which began unwittingly, with one sole hotel built by an architect working for his father, but 50 years later it is a clear leader in the field of luxury hotels. The Provence resort is no exception to the general Four Seasons ethos; continual innovation and a single-minded dedication to the highest of standards and to the guest’s personal needs (a particularly welcoming trio of qualities for a child-friendly resort where standards can sometimes spiral out the bedroom window). But fear not, it is easy to lose your offspring on this site if you do want to, for the property is immense in size. The main hotel building comprises a terraced villa filled with beautiful fresh flowers, contemporary artworks and plenty of fresh air. No sooner do you enter the building than you sense another Four Seasons principle: elegance, yet in the presence of authenticity. You know you’re at the centre of luxury living but never do you forget that you’re also in Provence. Quality of life is both on offer and yours for the taking at Four Seasons Provence. The rooms, self-contained luxury villas, are contemporary and have separate living and bedroom areas. A large terrace provides your own private spot for watching the sun rising with breakfast or setting over afternoon tea. It becomes hard not to reflect constantly on how the clarity of light made this region a magnet for the likes of Cézanne, Renoir, Matisse and Van Gogh. The bathrooms are luxurious in size and décor with the most inviting of bathtubs (sadly fading in so many resorts). Heavily pregnant at the time, I was very thankful for the thoughtful inclusion of an orthopedic pillow, an instance of how this hotel chain has made its mark internationally by not forgoing its human touch.

Perhaps it is of no surprise that the food at the resort is award winning. Of the four restaurants on offer, two supply the serious options. Faventia restaurant sports Mediterranean cuisine with a Provençal fleck and is an on-site opportunity to swap the sarong for a glittering evening dress. The great majority of Provençal wines are rosés and Faventia’s wine list seems to supply a large cross-section. If you want to tone it down upon an evening, sidle along to the alternative, Tousco Grill, which offers al fresco dining by the swimming pool and throws in a delicious Provençal buffet à la bouillabaise, aioli or ratatouille. Take good note of the fact that throughout summer, breakfast, lunch and dinner from the children’s buffets are complimentary for children up to 11 years old. Four Seasons Provence is a particular draw for the golfing enthusiast. Indeed, Terre Blanche Golf Club is one of the world’s top-level golfing destinations, with two 18-hole, year-round, par-72 championship courses (Le Riou and Le Château). Don’t feel intimated if golf is not your cup of tea though; you can just lap up the novelty of customary delivery to your villa by golf buggy after check-in. Alternatively, take a buggy ride to the spa to choose from a treatment list that includes high-end product lines and those using local ingredients like lavender. Post treatment, toss a coin between the outdoor vitality pool in the resort’s garden and the spectacular vaulted indoor pool. Late summer and autumn are the perfect times for general outdoor pursuits in the region, such as biking, hiking and mountain climbing, and there’s also the sweetener of less chaotic crowds. Provence has two growing seasons, spring and autumn, with roses often blooming until late November, but it’s in September that the wine harvest starts and village markets are on top form. Provence can provide weeks of late summer sun well into what should, in our minds, be autumn. The area’s down-to-earth atmosphere, with a lick of self-assured luxury, leaves the visitor trooping back to London questioning why life can’t always be as it is whilst frolicking around on the Côte d’Azur. Yet it’s a definite holiday calendar mainstay so booking next summer’s flights to Nice becomes a winter ritual for the savvy. Simultaneously knowing that Four Seasons Provence will attend to your every whim, year in year out, transforms holiday planning stress for the family into peace of mind. n Four Seasons Provence at Terre Blanche 3100 Route de Bagnols-en-Forêt, Domaine de Terre Blanche 83440 Tourrettes, Var, France +33 (0) 4 94 39 90 00 www.fourseasons.com/provence

N

o sooner had we taken off and sipped our gin and tonics than our descent was announced. In the time it would take to edge forward a few hundred yards in London rush hour, we had arrived in Jersey. We picked up our car from the airport and meandered through winding country lanes in search of our hotel. Prior to our trip, I had consulted an old friend, now resident on the island, who assured me that our

destination was truly deserving of its outstanding reputation. Tucked away along a leafy street was Longueville Manor, our residence for the next 48 hours. And what a residence! An understated approach led the way to this beautiful Norman manor house, its sandstone faรงade lit against a backdrop of thick green foliage. We were ushered in past an impressive fountain outside, and under an imposing archway to the main reception. On a chilly evening the warmth of the

travel

hotel and its staff was well received. We were instantly made to feel as if we had come home to our own country pile, immediately relaxed; the afternoon’s meetings in London seemed a lifetime away. Dinner was served in the Oak Room Restaurant, a great example of architectural history that has been preserved in this 13th century house. The original panelling in this room is said to have been formed from old chests dating back more than 400 years. The restaurant staff proved numerous accolades for service well deserved. With Michelin starred chef Andrew Baird (formerly of the Ritz Hotel, London) at the helm, we delighted in every course. Longueville Manor also boasts an extensive list of Old and New World wines housed in its vast cellars, all of which can be expertly recommended by the in-house master sommelier. After a rather late evening of utter indulgence, we returned to our rooms through part of the hotel’s grounds, which had been lit by lanterns to lead the way. There was something very romantic about the setting, the quiet and the flickering lanterns underneath a jet-black sky that could only be rivalled by the exquisite display of stars on show. Back in the room, I enjoyed a long, luxurious soak courtesy of the hotel’s exclusive bath and body range, Jersey Cow, a brand famed for its use of local ingredients including Jersey milk, honey and lavender, which, along with a sip of champagne and the feel of thick Egyptian cotton sheets, lulled me into the deepest of sleeps. The next morning, as I opened the curtains, I noticed what had been masked by darkness. Stepping out onto my private patio, robed in a Longueville Manor dressing gown, I saw the hotel’s picturesque grounds for the first time; a 16-acre woodland valley, immaculately kept pool and the lake inhabited by beautiful black swans. Breakfast was taken in the Oak Room Restaurant, and followed by a tour of the hotel by owner, Malcolm Lewis. Very much a family business, the Manor house was bought by Malcolm’s grandparents in 1948, and opened as a hotel for the first time with just 12 bedrooms in 1949. After being the first hotel on the island to offer en-suite facilities and a swimming pool, Longueville Manor was awarded its stars by the AA, and soon after joined one of the most prestigious hotel consortiums in the world, Relais and Chateaux. Now boasting 30 bedrooms, each named after a different rose grown on the grounds, Longueville Manor has recently been refurbished with a rare mix of fine antiques and

connoisseur

contemporary style, juxtaposing tradition and innovation to perfection. Further accommodation lies in the 16th century farmhouse, lovingly referred to as The Cottage. Malcolm explained the renovation of the building to me, including the importance of restoring many original features like the fireplace and internal Jersey granite walls. The Cottage houses two bedrooms and its own kitchen and living room. The prefect home away from home, this little retreat is great for families. We ventured through the grounds to the kitchen garden, surrounded by a high stone wall and an impressive array of roses. Here grows much of the kitchen’s produce, and whatever cannot survive the colder months lives in the Victorian glasshouses. Built in the 1800s, these houses provide perfect conditions for more exotic fruits and vegetables, including chilli peppers, lemons, passion fruits and a newly developed crop of micro herbs. Although not completely self-sufficient, Longueville Manor is definitely doing its bit and the hotel is now part of the environmentally friendly tourism initiative in Jersey. Perfectly situated close to many of Jersey’s breathtaking beaches and renowned golf courses, a stay at Longueville Manor can cater for everyone, from the explorer to the bookworm. Among our favourites of the various sights and attractions were a walk on St Ouen’s beach, followed by an informal freshly caught lobster dinner at Oyster Box in St Brelade’s Bay. If you’re looking for a little luxury not too far from home, be sure to pay Longueville Manor a visit. Steeped in history, beauty and first-class service, there is a distinct air of family legacy about the place and after one visit you’ll wish it was your own. n www.longuevillemanor.com

any things dictate which particular bottle we deem worthy to open and imbibe. Be it occasion, budget, food matching, or just what’s left in the cupboard. All, of which, are very valid reasons to steer your selection, but if you’re looking for the ultimate in romanticised indulgence you should throw yourself into the wonderful world of seasonal wine pairing. And what better season and place to pair your plonk with than an autumnal London. After all, our fair city wears the muted burgundy browns and burnt yellows so very well on those bright crisp mornings best spent by the river. If there was a grape to be dedicated to each of the seasons, autumn’s enviable pairing must be that of pinot noir. The grape itself is a fickle fruit that is notoriously hard to grow but can achieve dizzying heights when properly tended. It has been described as producing the ‘most romantic of wines’ by Joel Fleischman of Vanity Fair. “With so voluptuous a perfume, so sweet an edge, and so powerful a punch that, like falling in love, they make the blood run hot and the soul wax embarrassingly poetic.” Romance indeed. Head to the cradle of pinot noir for its classic embodiment, Burgundy (or Borgogne in the native French). The only grape allowed for the production of wines bearing this name and home to some of the finest (and most expensive) examples in the world. Louis Latour Gevrey Chambertin 2007 (£23 Majestic) is a solid example from a well-known producer and a prestigious village. Light oak notes, leather and smoke with truffled hints give way to a medium body of blackberry, raspberry fruit and soft, supple tannins. Delicious with any game slathered in a rich, mushroom sauce. South Africa has really struggled with this cool climate variety to the point that they devised their own version which is Pinotage. But the Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir 2008 (£26.65 slurp.co.uk) hails from the cooler region of Walker Bay where it can reach its epitome. Infinitely complex with layers of mushroom, earthiness and meaty savoury tones, this is as full and rich as any pinot you’ll find. Amazing on its own just to peel back its many layers in the glass for an hour (if you’ve one spare) or match up its sweet and sour red cherries to the juicy pink flesh of a rare duck breast. New Zealand is proving a hot bed for pinot with Central Otago providing the essential cooling climate but swing the globe around and you’ll find Patagonia, Argentina laying on the same latitude. Black River Pinot Noir 2009 (£17.05 Cavas de Gaucho) is chock full of its fruits such as ripe cherries and wild strawberries with a hint of smoke. Light-body, a vibrant acidity and super-soft tannins give this a refreshing quality that will even pair up with some meatier fish dishes. Think poached halibut in a herby, cream sauce. n

Offering everything from pitch perfect opera, to Motown classics, a talented string quartet and a Hungarian gyspy band, this restaurant really knows how to have a good time, while decadent baroque decor, with banisters from the Royal Opera House, only adds to the drama. 126 Drury Lane, WC2B 5SU www.sarastro-restaurant.com

Out of town 606 Club, Chelsea

They don’t come more exclusive and brooding than this fab club in Chelsea, though make sure you book ahead as entry is via a speakeasy style door. Descend into the velvet depths, cosy up on their tables for two, or bring a group of friends and get into the groove. Classic menus with a touch of something exotic provides solid nourishment, but it’s the wine, whisky and music that makes this place sing. Boasting some of the best jazz acts in the capital, complemented by a cosy underground space literally humming with atmosphere, you couldn’t get anywhere more interesting for a good night out. 90 Lots Road, SW10 0QD www.606club.com

Family Affair Emma Mills gets food envy and some seriously good wine at luxe restaurant Roux at The Landau

W

e’re a big fan of the casual, gastro eateries in North West London, and let’s face it, there’s plenty of them to go around! But when we find somewhere as chic and sure of itself as Roux at The Landau it’s a big bonus; and it’s an even bigger bonus when the restaurant itself brings together the powerhouse team of a father and son from one of the most renowned culinary families in the world. Michel Roux and his father Albert opened Roux at the Landau in November last year, and the restaurant has fast become a popular place for diners across London. Designed by the inimitable David Collins (let’s face it, what isn’t designed by him these days?), the restaurant forms the signature eatery at The Langham hotel on Portland Place, and it’s in good company. Flanked by the stunning Artesian Bar - one of my favourite places for a pre-dinner cocktail - the restaurant is housed in an imposing, high-ceilinged room, complete with a series of cosy leather booths and the signature Collins industrial-style lighting. While Roux and his father created the restaurant, it has been left to chef de cusine Chris King to bring the food here to life. Boasting experience at Le Gavroche, Thomas Keller’s Per Se in the US and Roux at Parliament Square,

King is the perfect choice to unveil a classic menu of traditional English dishes with a modern, gastronomic twist – very much the trend du jour too; if Heston Blummenthal and Marcus Wareing’s latest offerings are anything to go by. Franco Becci, restaurant manager, and Zach Saghir, head sommelier, complete the talented team; experience runs through every aspect of this place. Franco takes us through the interesting menu, pointing out his favourite dishes and suggesting the best seasonal plates to try. We start with the Landes foie gras – sweet and rich with an inspired green almond, radish and sherry accompaniment, while the summer salad of lobster is fresh, simple and enticing. Main courses provide a seriously tough choice, with a selection of great sounding vegetarian dishes even in the running. Risotto with fresh girolles and peas and cavatelli pasta with broad beans both have a wonderfully country classic ring to them, and feel like a good idea after our decadent starters. Guided by Franco, though, we decide on chorizo stuffed rabbit leg - very good, if a little overpowering - and roast rack of Cumbrian lamb with cracked wheat and Nocellara del Belice olives - expertly cooked and humming with flavour and intriguing textures.

Throughout the meal, sommelier Zach attends to us with expert precision, offering a sweet MR Moscatel with my foie gras and a divine crisp pinot blanc with the lobster. Red wine helps soak up the rich main courses, we quoff large glasses of Le Soula, a delightful biodynamic wine from the south of France. For dessert we head for the port – a wonderful LBV Quinta De la Rosa to accompany my impressive cheeseboard, while a well-rounded, nutty Château de Cérons Cérons brings out the sugary sweetness of the Madagascan bourbon vanilla crème brûlee with fresh palmiers. The restaurant is fairly quiet on the night we’re there, an almost unseasonably warm spell in August has meant people have stayed away to enjoy evening picnics and beer gardens, but we are cosy and content in our spacious booth and well-looked after by the professional, discreet service. Roux at The Landau is special enough for a special occasion, impressive enough for a business lunch and even classic enough for a mid-week treat. We suggest you make the most of having somewhere so good on your doorstep. n The Langham 1C Portland Place, W1B 1JA 020 7965 0165 www.thelandau.com

Property provides safe harbour

More stock means more choice for tenants

Tom Gladwin, managing director at Parkheath,

Chloe Green, lettings manager at Hamptons

comments on the current trends in the residential

International, comments on the current trends in

sales market

the rental market

The swell in property demand in prime north west London is continuing as investors look for ‘safe harbours’ to ride out the current financial storm. In prime residential areas such as Belsize Park, South and West Hampstead we are seeing a rise in both sales and property prices despite the gloomy financial outlook. The current volatility in the world’s stock markets and the ever present threat of Southern European Countries defaulting on their loans, combined with the impending Public Sector government cuts, has lead to a pretty bleak outlook for the nationwide property market. However for us, the market could not be more different. In uncertain times large-scale investors often seek the safe harbours provided by gold and cash. For the private investor, property in Prime North West London is increasingly seen as a ‘safe harbour’. With the cash rich getting little or no return on their money in the bank, property is still promising excellent, inflation proof, long term capital gain, with immediate returns from rising rental incomes. This influx of new investors has once again increased the level of competition within a market where demand already outstrips supply. This has made other buyers more confident about the long-term sustainability of the local property market. People have become more comfortable with moving within the market. The result has been a reduction in stalemates, where buyers are waiting while sellers struggle to buy which has often meant chains of sales and purchases remained incomplete. To conclude, we are looking at an exciting property market with more properties to sell, and more buyers keen to purchase. More transactions have been completed; more people are buying property and more people want to buy property. Prime London is still promising a buoyant future.

The rental market in St John’s Wood, Regents Park and Maida Vale remains buoyant as we move towards the Autumn months. Traditionally September is a busy market with strong demand from families looking for houses and apartments. Transaction levels continue to increase in line with seasonal trends. Stock levels have slowly improved throughout the first half of 2011, now 20 per cent higher in London compared with last year. Although demand remains strong in most areas, stock increases are now having a real impact on rents. Year over year average rents are now up 6.7 per cent across London although the rate in growth has slowed in recent months. Improvements in stock levels have also taken some of the heat out of the transaction process, which until recently was regularly seeing multiple offers on the same day and very few deals going for much below asking price. It is certainly still a landlord’s market, but tenants are starting to get a taste for choice again. Taken together, the lettings market continues to perform strongly and while we are seeing the heat coming out of some areas, fundamentals remain sound and we anticipate the market to remain vibrant for the rest of 2011. St John’s Wood in particular presents a great opportunity for investors as well as those looking for a home. The area remains a solid investment for those looking for good rental yields, offering everything from good deals on one bedroom properties to a solid weekly income on larger houses which are popular with families and those recently relocated to the city from abroad. While costs can be high, value is never in doubt. St John’s Wood is one of the most popular areas in London for affluent families and provides excellent links to Canary Wharf, Soho and Mayfair, coupled with a real sense of community. Landlords are benefiting from rising rentals and almost non-existent void periods in some cases.

The

Cape Escape With summer over, now is the perfect time to consider a second home in warmer climes, says Alice Nail

T

here are very few gorgeous villas in tropical resorts that we wouldn’t like, especially as the lacklustre summer we did have drifts away. However, this month we think we’ve found a definite favourite, in the form of a luxury hideaway on Cape Panwa, Phuket. Thailand, and Phuket in particular, has become one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world over recent years, and not just with those undertaking gap year travel. Increasing service from international airlines, and a blossoming tourist industry that has seen high end bars, restaurants and hotels become commonplace, has ensured that most

of us know someone who has considered the country as their luxurious escape – be it for a honeymoon or long, sun-soaked holiday. In fact, Phuket airport is on course to exceed all known aviation records this year, having handled an influx of over five million visitors within the first eight months of 2011. This number is substantiated by a 34.13 per cent increase in international arrivals since 2010. It is difficult to imagine any of those visitors who would not choose to extend their stay if they could and a recently available property from Signature Residences Worldwide is definitely the type of place we’d love to while away tropical days.

homes & property

The 1,400 metre plot is integrated into a five star resort which stretches majestically out to sea from the south of Phuket. And while those accustomed to spas, private beaches and infinitely pools might declare it cliché, the rest of us would gladly seize on such a heavenly stereotype. And not before joining the cooking school, taking cocktails in the stunning bar, trying our hand at the water sports available and dancing the night away at the disco. Yet, as geared towards escapism and entertainment as the resort is, the ambience is as relaxing and respectful as you could hope for. The interior of the villas have a distinctive Asian flair, finished in deep woods and natural materials. Wraparound, floor-to-ceilings windows from a vantage point of up to 60 metres above Thailand’s Andaman Sea also flood the rooms with sunlight and an inimitable tranquillity. The villa available is a four bedroom property with several living and dining areas, presenting the perfect opportunity for socialising, but retaining a cosy and exclusive feel. It has been styled with chic cream daybeds, cool stone floors and state of the art bathroom suites, all of which are touches that blend the traditional Asian styling with a desirable modernism. Plasma televisions, air conditioning and other high tech features also ensure home comforts are on hand. While it looks absolutely beautiful, one imagines you’d spend most of your time outside, whether sunbathing on the veranda, making the most of a private BBQ area or enjoying a dip in the jacuzzi or two swimming pools! This part of Thailand benefits from high temperatures throughout the year but January and February are particularly great times to visit, owing to a lower level of humidity and very limited rainfall. The resort itself consists of 40 acres of tropical rainforest and is set exclusively on the Cape, which means that unlike other areas of Thailand which have become deservingly popular, the style and services of Cape Panwa are available to only a select few. Befitting of its status as a fully equipped resort, there are tennis courts as well as a gym, fitness centre and swimming club and friends can challenge each other in the games room or take some time out in the library. For those who just can’t let go of their commitments at home, a business centre also facilitates communication with the UK. The blending of a residential complex and highend holiday hideaway is an increasingly sought after concept and clearly one which Cape Panwa embodies effortlessly. And if one decides to take a day trip away from the region? There’s even a mooring centre for yachts. n
