From the editor J

anuary always leaves me in a reflective mood – looking back over the past 12 months and considering what next year will bring. And this January more so than ever, as it will be my last issue of Vantage – in the New Year I move on to new titles and new challenges, and a new team continues the Vantage journey. For this, our 30th issue, we bring you a 2012 retrospective, looking at how NW played its part in some of the biggest events of the year – the London Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee, for instance; and some of the smaller ones too – the Kings Troop moved from St John’s Wood after two centuries, community support kept libraries open, and a beach opened in Camden. See our rundown of the year on p. 24. As the cold weather really starts to bite, we find inspiration in images of NW London encased in snow. These striking and haunting shots, all taken by local photographers, remind us of the unparalleled beauty of nature, and how much our landscape can be changed by a simple coating of white. The winter wonderlands can be seen on p. 14. Keeping warm and eating well are a big part of the festive season, and to make sure we’re getting it right, we speak to the inimitable Giles Coren about getting great service when eating out (p. 20), and review Michael Nadra’s new opening in Primrose Hill (p. 86). To ensure you’re ready for the new year we’ve uncovered the best in gothic glamour, a major trend this winter (p. 34), while showcasing the best in apres ski style (p. 38), finding out how to declutter your wardrobe (p. 54), talking to Giles Deacon about his collaboration with Matches (p. 37) and lusting over a very special collection from Chanel (p. 31). As I sign off, I would like to thank all our readers for the unwavering support of Vantage as we grew from new kid on the block to firmly established member of the NW scene. As a local girl myself, I will remain an avid reader and look forward to an exciting year ahead. I wish you all the best for an inspiring and successful 2013 and beyond. Best wishes,

Lighting up the Year This winter, locals strolling along Regent’s Canal will probably notice a rather unusual Christmas tree lighting up the riverside. It is actually a piece of art, the Electric Christmas Tree, created by Gary Card, an international set designer and artist. Having collaborated with Stella McCartney and Nick Knight, Card is known for his extraordinary and groundbreaking artworks, and his new creation, made out of Vauxhall Ampera pieces, is no different. Perched on the side of Regent’s Canal, it is a quirky and interesting addition to the Christmas spirit in NW. Kings Cross Filling Station, Goods Way, N1C

Dream work The Freud Museum has partnered with Christie Brown from the Arts and Humanities Research Council to give a new interpretation of the significance and nature of Freud’s large collection of ceramic and bronze figurines. In the ‘Dream Work’ exhibit Christie Brown puts on show the ceramic characters she created based on Freud’s figurines, with the notion that, as the receptacles of human emotions, these objects have a life of their own. Farmer Tom There are usually a lot of people standing between us and the meat on our plate: the farmer, the butcher and the cook. Taking a slightly new approach to the idea of cutting out the middle man, Tom Jones, chef at The Abbey Tavern in Kentish Town, undertakes every single one of these roles himself. Tom, who grew up in a farming community in Wales, sources, farms and cooks all the animals you will eat at the Abbey Tavern, and that’s why the cuts he has on offer change every day. The menu, though, always stays in the same vein – rustic, authentic flavours and simply made dishes. 124 Kentish Town Road, NW1 www.abbey-tavern.com

In this captivating show Riccio, a London-based Italian circus theatre artist, uses gravitydefying techniques from circus and mime – including high octane acrobatics, German wheel and Chinese pole – to tell the story of Giuseppe Tato, a man full of memories, fantasies, ghosts and contradictions. This is an impressive show that will challenge your imagination. 18-20 January, Jacksons Lane Theatre 269a Archway Road, N6, www.jacksonslane.org.uk

Kentish toWn Kaleidoscope In 2013, Kentish Towners will have more than one occasion to discover or rediscover the creative past of their area. An exhibition tour, stretching over several months and organised by the ‘Many Cultures, One Community’ collective, intends to retrace the historical moments that marked Kentish Town, from the 1940’s to today. Each month, a different venue will host talks by historians and professors, with performing arts workshops, film screenings and more. Other than revisiting the past, the exhibition tour also intends to inspire the new generation to make their own history. In June, the project will culminate with a carnival, reminiscent of the festivals that took place in the 1960’s and 1970’s in the area – a perfect homage to one of the most creative and dynamic neighbourhoods of London. www.manyculturesonecommunity.com

Film in space The Camden Arts Centre is kicking off its 2013 cultural program with an exhibition of film and expanded cinema selected by artist film maker Guy Sherwin. Through works of 17 experimental artists, ‘Film in Space’ revisits expanded cinema, a movement that culminated in Britain in the early 1970’s. Younger artists are also put in the spotlight for the versatility of their work using newer digital technologies. 15 December to 24 February 2013 Arkwright Road, NW3 www.camdenartscentre.org

Q&a: Hubbub North West Londoners value their local independent shops for the quality of both their food and their service, and now they can get this expertise delivered straight to their door. Online business Hubbub – which currently operates in Islington – will be officially launching in Highgate, Archway, Belsize Park, Chalk Farm, Hampstead, Highgate, Kentish Town, Maida Vale, St John’s Wood, South Hampstead and West Hampstead in January. With shops such as The Ginger Pig, La Fromagerie, Earth Natural Foods, Hansen & Lydersen and Saponara Italian Delicatessen on their books, you can now benefit from the best quality produce while supporting your local shops, and get it delivered to your door. Vantage spoke with Marisa Leaf, the founder of Hubbub, about her brilliant idea. What was your primary reason for creating Hubbub? As a human rights barrister, I worked very long hours and, by the time I left chambers, the only places I could buy food were supermarkets or takeaways. It frustrated me not to be able to buy the great food made and sold by the brilliant independent shops in my neighbourhood and I knew there were many more people who felt the same way. How do you choose the local shops you partner with? We handpick shops for their exceptional quality, and when we open a new area, we pound the streets to find the little gems. We also always ask our customers for recommendations. We prioritise fish, meat, fruit, vegetables and bread because this is where the expertise of small shops and their short supply chains add the most value. Speaking of value, we don’t charge anymore than local shops would to buy inhouse, our delivery charges start at £3.50. Why did you decide to roll out the operation in North West London? This area is great because so many people really care about the quality of their food here. And the kind of people who care about what they eat also tend to care about supporting their local shops. But these are also areas where people work long hours and where good shops close relatively early, Hubbub changes that. n www.hubbub.co.uk

lmost every photographer I spoke to about winter in North West London said that the main thing about snow was how different it made the green slopes and woodland they were used to shooting in the summer. As if this covering of white changed everything. “It’s almost as if all humans have gone to the moon on holiday, and there is just you there and it’s all different; an unusual peace and quiet, in a desolate white-covered everything,” says local photographer Zoran Matic, whose haunting image (right) captures the isolated beauty of a simple scene on Hampstead Heath. Despite the disruption to our lives, the endless column inches about council failures, gritting policies and stranded motorists, snow seems

to bring out the inquisitive, delighted child in all of us, our imagination escaping to the magical times of fairytales and a long forgotten past. Nigel Winder, editor of HampsteadHeath.net, whose striking image opens this feature, describes his haunting, expansive image of the ponds near Kenwood House as a veritable Narnia; and the eerie blue light, tinged with a warm orange glow and stark trees certainly conjures up ideas of a distant land. While senior associate minister at All Souls Langham Place in Marylebone, Mark Meynell, who provided our cover shot this month of the frozen gates at the entrance to the Queen Mary Gardens in Regent’s Park, recalls a world stopped still for a time, a pause from reality. Nature takes centre stage when it snows, our modern world stumped by the simplicity of something soft and white falling from the sky. For her shot of an oak tree in Regent’s Park (left hand page), St John’s Wood photographer Martine Davies describes it as being ‘decorated by nature’. “London is one of the most beautiful places in the snow, especially the open spaces of Regent’s Park and Hampstead Heath where you feel you are in the wild countryside with the rolling hills and forested clusters, but are in fact in the centre of London. To me, the Heath feels like a friendly giant, keeping its eye over London town.”

The striking thing about Carol Howard’s image (left hand page) is the fact that it is nearly 50 years old, and yet could have been taken this year. “I was given a collection of slides by a friend in about 1965. This image reminds me of my family. We lived near Hampstead Heath, and I was born in the year after the coldest winter my parents could remember. This shows another winter in black and white, starkness all around, tall trees covered by the snow, all else has been obliterated by the whiteness.” Perhaps some things really never do change. As local resident and professional photographer Raha Saber’s shot (left hand page) shows, a snowy day always brings people together. “As I walk through Hampstead I pass my neighbour who is carrying his skis, see children dragging their sledges up Kite Hill, adults making snow angels along the way. Everyone’s inner child has come out to play. There is such a togetherness too. Someone’s making a cup of tea for the stranded driver, someone else is helping the elderly cross an icy path; there is a wonderful sense of unity and camaraderie. I can think of nowhere else I’d rather be caught in a snowstorm other than my beloved Hampstead.” I couldn’t have said it better myself. This my enduring memory of NW London in the snow too. Beauty, togetherness, surprise and joy. n

Please sir, Can i have

some more? Food fan, presenter and culinary commentator Giles Coren tells Stephen Milton why eating out should mean speaking out

O

ne must wonder if Giles Coren exercises his opinion just for sheer reactionary purposes. For years now, the food critic, presenter and all round pot-stirrer has lived to agitate the upper foodie industry and the loftier echelons of high society that orbit around it. He once looked back on his early career, saying: “I wasn’t happy unless jobs were lost, reputations were ruined and ‘closed’ notices were up in the window by the end of the week. I remember reading an interview in the Financial Times with the owner of a restaurant I’d just panned, in which he declared that ‘Giles Coren’s review cost me £150,000,’ and thinking, ‘Is that all?’” But is this for public benefit or is he simply rattling the cage? A recent column, castigating the glaring antiquities of latest Bond outing Skyfall, was dumped by request after Times editors claimed 007 overload. So Coren decided to juice up his venom for the film, the highest-grossing in the franchise with unanimous critical praise, and place it on his wife, Esther Walker’s food blog, Recipe Rifle. It went as follows; “I am ashamed, as a journalist, of the five-star ratings this film garnered across the board from sheep-like critics afraid or unable to look through the hype, to its rotten soul. I am ashamed, as a man, that women are still compelled in the 21st century to watch [such] movies. I am ashamed, as a British

20

person, that this film will be mistaken abroad for an example of prevailing values here. It is a sick, reactionary, depressing film and its director, Sam Mendes, should be ashamed of himself, all the way to the bank.” Is this really a fair breakdown of easily the best Bond ever? Does Coren simply need to catch another screening and accept the iconic spy for what it is; pure unadulterated, escapist brilliance? Does he just want his voice to be heard above everyone else’s? “Of course,” he mocks. “Don’t you? I’m certainly not going to see that film again, I wouldn’t put myself through it and I still stand by the fact that once everyone steps back from the hype machine, they might see the real picture.” Whether they do or not, it’s clear that Coren isn’t afraid to go against the grain. In fact, you could argue, he positively revels in it; he certainly courts controversy as a writer and reviewer. And yet, I find Coren to be a delightfully affable, charming fellow to interview, who lacks the pomposity of his Times column. So, maybe it’s all a simple ruse? A regular staple on our screens thanks to appearances on Gordon Ramsay’s F Word, Channel 4’s Animal Farm and a career-defining series of advertisements for Bird’s Eye, Coren has now become a reluctant darling of the BBC, fronting culinary programme Our Food, as well as the surprisingly successful Supersizers, alongside ‘work wife’ Sue Perkins.

‘‘

I want to empower people with getting the treatment that I get in restaurants, possibly because of my arrogant personality, possibly because I’m a critic. You don’t have to be Michael Winner, but you can become more demanding.

’’

scene

Away from adventures in instigation, the critic and literary enthusiast has just published his latest offering, How to Eat Out, a guide to the art of dining in restaurants. Now, this wouldn’t strike you as something many would seek assistance with but, apparently, most fall foul to the ultimate eatery faux pas. “Impoliteness and rudeness – that is the cardinal sin,” he says. “Restaurants and eateries that don’t treat you as an equal – they are the biggest wrongdoers. Now I’ll be honest, I’m a food critic, so most owners and proprietors tend to know who I am, but now, most places are using some form of bouncer or surly door host – generally of Eastern European descent – who isn’t so familiar with me. So I get to the door awaiting a lovely experience, and the hired help immediately looks you up and down with an attitude that is wholly unacceptable. And c’mon, this could be a place that’s slightly out of your price range, or worse yet, massively so, but you’re going because it’s a special event. “I want to empower people with getting the treatment that I get in restaurants, possibly because of my arrogant personality, possibly because I’m a critic. You don’t have to be Michael Winner, but you can become more demanding.” So let’s bypass straight to the fun part… the naming and shaming of offenders in this culinary bible? “There have been a couple along the way – a very fashionable restaurant in Charlotte Street called Roka that I even returned to in order to gauge whether their rudeness was a one-off or actually part of the standard experience. And it should be said, it’s generally the door staff who ruin an experience. After all, they’re the first and

22

last people you see. They have the ability to shape a restaurant visit however they like.” And what of closer to home then? Will the Kentish Town homebody humiliate any local establishments or is that just a little too local for comfort? Coren, who grew up in Hampstead, seems unusually biased. “Kentish Town has the best spots in the world, simply by default of one crucial criteria – I can stroll home in a matter of minutes from every single one. Although we do have a local Italian which in theory is Italian but ultimately, is a step sideways from dog food. A Bolognese there was I’m pretty sure, a product of simply squeezing out the innards of a sausage, while save for Parmesan, they used two slices of Kraft cheese and laid it on top of the pasta and sauce.” So where in the area ticks all the boxes for Coren, wife Esther, and baby daughter Kitty? “The Bull and Last, on Highgate Road, was once a pub and has now moved into gastro pub and restaurant territory. It’s owned by new management who buy good, fresh things and cook them well. The staff are young, attractive and knowledgeable – it’s a winning formula. “And there’s the Kentish Canteen, right beside the tube station, which serves a delightful mixture of food and is another wonderful place we love to go to. There’s also a place called the Southampton Arms, a cider and ale house, where they have a leg of pork under a hot plate at the bar, and you can have pork battered for four quid a pop. It’s incredibly warm and sociable, and that’s what people want now.” So what’s next? Having fronted Beeb series Our Food – an exploratory documentary which looks at British food – it seems the powers that be have enough faith in the sometimes handsome, lovably arrogant Coren, and have offered him a Stateside version for BBC America – boasting an overtly imaginative title... “It’ll be called Their Food,” says Coren. “And fundamentally, we’ll be looking at the biggest differences between our food, and theirs. I know, the title, it was all me,” he laughs. Unfortunately, fans of the Coren/Perkins double act shouldn’t hold their breath for a return to the small screen anytime soon because the quirky pairing has no new material. The twosome rather randomly joined forces back in 2007 for BBC Four series, Edwardian Supersize Me, a play on the original Morgan Spurlock idea where they both dined on the diet of a wealthy couple of that era. Big ratings saw subsequent series that took in other periods of time (and their foods), but Coren fears that until a new age of dining comes along, the TV experiment might end there. “We essentially covered too much, too quickly,” he laughs. “We were hopping back and forth between decades and eras, and essentially covered off all of the interesting bits. I suppose there’s the temptation to go back to the Stone Age and examine fishing techniques, but I’m not sure the dress code would suit a prewatershed audience. “What’s great is that we’ve seen real passion emerge from our viewers, an interest not only in the food itself but in the art of eating. And it doesn’t all have to be served up with pomp and seriousness. If you can’t enjoy the dining experience with a smile on your face it can all get a little staid.” Someone needs to tell those bouncers... n

January

The year started well for North West London as Kentish Town singer Michael Kiwanuka was featured on BBC Sound of 2012, the prestigious annual list of the most promising British musical talents. Previous nominees on the list include Adele and Jessie J. Michael was born and bred in Muswell Hill and bought his first guitar in Crouch End shop Rock Around the Clock.

February February saw a sad send off, as St John’s Wood bid farewell to the King’s Troop after hosting its gunners and officers for nearly two centuries. The mounted unit fired a 41-gun salute to mark the official start of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, before closing its barracks for the last time and heading to Woolwich, its new home.

March This month, King’s Cross station unveiled its new western concourse as part of the station’s £547m refurbishment. The impressive white steel structure, while very modern, was designed to blend with the old brick structure of the original 1852 building so as to keep an authentic atmosphere.

april Community spirit triumphed in April and, thanks to the support

of local residents, two libraries were able to reopen in North West London. The Primrose Hill Community library, previously known as Chalk Farm library, counted amongst its supporters actor Sir Derek Jacobi, and recieved 494 financial pledges. Over in Hampstead new volunteer-run Keats Community library – replacing the Heath Library – opened thanks to the passion and dedication of the community, including actor Michael Palin.

May Bringing the seaside to residents stuck in the capital, The Roundhouse was the first to give North West Londoners a taste of summer. The cultural venue cast a tropical atmosphere on NW London with deckchairs resting on 150 tonnes of sand. BBQ food, beer and Hawaiianstyle cocktails were available at the Tiki hut bar.

June June saw the celebration of 60 years of the reign of HRH Queen Elizabeth II and NW London had its part to play in the Jubilee festivities. As part of Royal Flotilla, the Queen chose to use the Spirit of Chartwell, a barge owned by St John’s Wood resident Philip Morrell. While Morrell was sailing on the richly-decorated barge, the streets and parks of NW filled up with residents sharing this historic event with neighbours enjoying picnics and free concerts.

Kilburn native Bradley Wiggins became the first Briton to win cycling competition Tour de France, fulfilling his childhood dream and rising to the status of hero in NW London, and throughout the rest of the UK. Meanwhile on 26 July, the Olympic Torch wound its way through Camden towards King’s Cross; first lit at the Roundhouse, it was then carried by local and sporting greats, including Clive Woodward, down Chalk Farm Road and on to Granary Square in King’s Cross.

With the London Olympics in full swing, Hampstead’s athlete Chris Tomlinson competed in the Long Jump, and made it to the final after qualifying with an impressive jump of 8.06m. Competing beside Team GB Greg Rutherford in the final, Chris finished in sixth place. Diversions from the Olympics included the hotly anticipated openings of Chicken Shop and Pizza East to much fanfare and excitement, the former being the first in a new venture for Soho House and a bona fide success in every respect.

Thousands of people descended on Hampstead to attend the village’s Christmas Festival, one of its largest street parties of the year, to enjoy live entertainment, food, drinks and gift stalls. Actor and Belsize Park resident Sean Bean switch on the lights, and was joined by other high profile personalities including Helena Bonham Carter, Tim Burton and comedian Jon Culshaw.

Culturally, December was an important month for the area, as the much anticipated Hampstead Arts Festival was reinstated after two year’s absence. The revamped festival included classical music concerts with high profile guests, from piano genius Stephen Kovacevich, and literary talks from Man Booker Prize winner Howard Jacobson to novelist Nick Harkaway. n

Hampstead design icon Kenneth Grange contributed to London’s new Design Museum’s foundation, and to mark the event, a time capsule containing various objects relevant to 2012 was laid in the new museum’s foundations. Grange chose to include a Cylinder Line coffee pot designed

THE aREa

My favourite thing about the area is the parks and the pubs! You really can’t beat North West London parks for good long walks. Highgate Woods in particular is so beautiful in the Autumn when all the leaves fall. Plus, the pubs around here are the best, and very dog friendly, which is great!

FOOd and dRInK Breakfast Kalendar on Swains Lane does a brilliant Eggs Benedict and freshly squeezed juice. They are also very dog friendly, so I take Mr Echo there before his long walk in Parliament Hill Park just opposite. 15 Swain’s Lane, N6

OUT and aBOUT

Highgate Woods is beautiful, and has a great little café. I also adore Waterlow Park. Handily located just opposite the shop, it has such a pretty flower garden and duck pond, and is very convenient for all our doggie clients! Highgate is the best place for the perfect dog-friendly Sunday – start with brunch at Kalendar, have a walk in any of the gorgeous local parks, pop into Hair of the Dog and leave your pooch for a grooming treatment, a wash and dry or simply a spruce up, whileyou visit some of the lovely unique boutiques. www.waterlowpark.org.uk

Lunch I am usually at the shop for lunch and love to nip out and treat myself to one of High Tea of Highgate’s savoury Cheese and Rosemary Scones – it has to be tasted to be believed! With a pot of one of their unique teas – almond or lavender are particular favourites. They also make the best cake ever! 50 Highgate High Street, N6

Dinner It has to be, The Red Lion & Sun, which has the most amazing pub food and great atmosphere. I often come here on Sundays, for their perfect roast, while the dog snoozes happily by the fire.Heaven! 24 North Road, N6

CHANEL’S HIGHLAND FLING 4 December 2012 saw Chanel present its annual Metiers d’Art Collection, an opportunity for the house to showcase the craftsmanship and heritage of the ateliers it holds dear. Ensembles of tweed and cashmere – pleated, buckled and belted – were teamed with ruffled silks, and strewn with beads and crystals, as models took to the runway in the beautiful surrounds of Linlithgow Palace in West Lothian for a Scottish-themed spectacle. The presentation reflected Chanel’s work with Barrie Knitwear, a production partner for 25 years, which it rescued from financial difficulty early last year. www.chanel.com

As 2012 drew to a close, Alexander Wang was confirmed to take the helm at Parisian label Balenciaga, a move which had industry insiders praising a commercially-minded decision, following the departure of Nicolas Ghesquière after 15 years. Having worked with Coddington in London and New York, American Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour recently commented: “It’s a big thing. A mAtch made in heaven

Giles Deacon talks to Gabrielle Lane about bringing his playful style to Matches

O

ne tends to think of capsule collections as composed of a few fail-safe pieces – the commercial, wear-with-anything numbers we live and die in. However, if it was this kind of neutrality Matches CEOs Tom and Ruth Chapman were after when they commissioned Giles Deacon to design an exclusive line, they must be sorely disappointed. The 16-piece range which is now available at Matches boutiques (including the Marylebone flagship) is a riot. There are dresses and shirts, based very much on the irreverent but stylish Giles main line, but there are also notepads, stickers and the small matter of ten dolls. “The dolls totally reflect the Giles aesthetic,” the designer tells me. “They are full of character and quirks and look like good trouble! The characters I illustrated, that we used in the prints, lent themselves really naturally to becoming 3D people with ostrich hair and Swarovski embroidered eyes and French knickers, they’re beautifully done and only ten of them exist!” Deacon says he was keen to do a spin-off, in addition to his core collection because he likes ‘the mix, and it’s all very jolly’, and Matches was the ideal partner: “Matches is good at supporting British designers and promoting them on a worldwide stage,” he explains. “I love their progressiveness. Tom and Ruth mix creativity and business in the most exciting manner and I feel customers really respond to it.” Both old and new fans of Giles will be pleased that the label’s signature illustrations (this time drawn on iPad while people-watching at Claridge’s) make a notable appearance, backed onto silk shifts as well as both A-line and bodycon dresses. What tips would Deacon say to customer’s looking to finish off their outfit? “Get your underpinnings right, underwear is really important. And make sure you make an effort with shoes!” (It comes as little surprise that he later acknowledges that ‘humour and playfulness are vital in life and not just in wardrobe’.) Unsurprisingly, owing to the interest in the collection, Deacon doesn’t rule out future capsule lines. “Even with good strong sales, fashion is still a very expensive business, and collaborations help you keep growing.” Lucky us. n 87 Marylebone High Street, W1U, 020 7487 5400 www.matchesfashion.com

vana Daniell most certainly practises what she preaches. Having originally set up her studio in Singapore, the beautiful Italian former dancer glides around her Marylebone outpost with a big smile on her face, the body of someone half her age and an almost regal gait, which is fitting when rumoured clients include royalty. Not to be confused with an average Pilates class, Movement Therapy is both Ivana’s forte and passion, with the aim of restoring the body to its optimum form and condition. The stress of daily life, lack of knowledge and a desk-bound culture, mean many of us breathe too shallowly, have poor posture and experience many of the aches and pains that arise accordingly. 20 years of expertise across Pilates, the Gyrotonic method (circular and fluid exercises akin to yoga and swimming) and the Alexander Technique has rendered Ivana the go-to specialist for ‘haute couture’ exercise programmes which seek out and address areas of concern. Perfect Prints In 1948, when textile manufacturer Zika Ascher commissioned Cecil Beaton to design exclusive haute couture prints, the latter probably didn’t imagine his creations would one day adorn our walls. At the time, Ascher’s goal was to create fashion designs that would brighten the dull post-war British wardrobe, a project which saw him approach several artists, among them Cecil Beaton, Matisse and Henry Moore. The project gave way to a splendid collection of designs in which Beaton’s signature brushwork is evident, amidst zesty florals, colourful stripes and quirky motifs. These designs have now been reproduced for use in the home and form the original Cecil Beaton fabrics collection – also inspired by some of the artist’s photographs and glamorous drawings. With cushions, upholstery and wallpaper to choose from, there are numerous colourful ways to give your home a Beaton touch. www.cecilbeatonfabrics.com

through the

keyhole INDUSTRY INSIDER BELINDA CORANI, FOUNDER OF HOME CONSCIOUS, THE HOME MANAGEMENT SERVICE Home Conscious offers a variety of property services, from sourcing a new home to arranging both minor and major renovations, repairs and styling. Interior design-trained Belinda is the ideal person to advise on re-organisation for the new year. How did the idea for Home Conscious originate? Home Conscious was born out of my personal styling business Style Conscious. When you’re visiting clients in their homes, going through their wardrobes, helping them make changes; you get to know clients very well. They naturally ask your opinion on other areas of their lives. I was asked by a client in Hampstead to help them de-clutter their house prior to moving home and ended up facilitating not only the clearance and removal day, but advising on the subsequent purchase and renovation of their new property. This led to helping many of their friends and family do the same thing and the business went from there. Currently, I am helping a few families find properties in St John’s Wood and Hampstead; many are moving from Canary Wharf and are seeking somewhere bigger with a garden. My job is to find the right property, note the renovation work that needs doing, arrange quotations for the work and manage the project while the client gets on with their life. It’s all encompassing; from house hunting to move-in day and beyond. But it’s clearly helpful for the client to have one person working from beginning to end on their project. Can you tell us about some of the more interesting projects you’ve worked on? One assignment that is particularly close to my heart was moving an elderly gentleman from a seven bedroom mansion on Hamilton Terrace to a much smaller home in St John’s Wood. With a vast amount of art and furniture dating back to the 1930’s, the house was a time capsule, with a working servants’ bell board, original wallpapers, art deco bed frames and a mangle and dumb waiter in the basement. It was a huge decluttering process involving both auction houses and charities. Everything needed practical work including art restoration, upholstery and silk rug repairs as well as a vast amount of bespoke items for the new house. Then every item was fitted onto a floor plan, ahead of removal day, to ensure a smooth transition. The whole removal project took a few months and I still maintain his house today. Where should you start when de-cluttering? Ideally in the rooms that need it most. Although, it’s often

54

prudent to start in the bedroom as that’s where people have a tendency to squirrel things away, out of sight of visiting guests. I am currently helping a lady in Maida Vale clear her flat after a long illness. It’s been beneficial for her to sleep in a room that is clean, simply furnished and un-cluttered; while we deal with the rest of the property as her time permits. It’s important to go at the pace of the client, whether it’s a room at a time or from the attic to the cellar. What are your tips for keeping things organised? In order to have that oh-so-covetable, uncluttered look in your home, you need proper storage to house your possessions. Leaving clutter on the floor or shoved into over-spilling wardrobes gives the impression that you’re not on top of things and gives your home a slightly chaotic feel. If you’re moving home, it’s incredibly important to declutter before moving out. Not only to save costs on the removal, but not doing so means that you’ll have to either buy or build storage for all the items you take with you. Make the effort to start de-cluttering as soon as you know you are moving.

‘‘

Clients naturally ask your opinions on other areas of their lives

’’

If you’re staying in your present home for a while I would suggest tackling your clothing first by rotating the items in your wardrobe, (put the unseasonal items away in a suitcase). After this, look to the larger groups of items such as unused toys, household paperwork and books. This will make a sizeable initial dent and will encourage you to continue with the process.

How much time do de-cluttering projects typically take? De-cluttering takes time there’s no doubt about it. Always triple the amount of time you think it’s going to take. Very few people can resist leafing through a photo album or old school reports and while these are fun things to do, they will distract you. It shouldn’t be a wrench to remove items that are redundant or irreparable, but so many people feel they have to retain things – often for psychological reasons. I’m there to help them through it because I know that, not only can decluttering be a daunting prospect for many people, it’s often an on-going problem as well. How can you strike a balance between achieving an organised home and retaining a personal feel? It’s very much about thought, organisation and making the effort. Most homes demonstrate the owner’s interests and talents, however, not all will be structured to display these attributes. Sometimes it just takes some thought and a quick re-jig of the furniture to accomplish a home that is individual, yet practical. Mostly, clients want a fresh pair of eyes to look at their home, put ideas into practice and deliver the functionality they need. Others want their interiors rebuilt, updated with the latest technology and using the newest fabrics and wallpapers; all with an eye on their personality! n Home Conscious 07780 615 815 www.homeconscious.com

uigi Esposito’s latest project looks is a carefully curated exhibition of luxury and attention-to-detail. As the head of his design firm, Oro Bianco, which he co-founded in 2011, Esposito has just overseen the styling of a house in Hampstead Heath, to stunning effect. Fusing his signature bold American style with his personal approach to design, has resulted in a striking project and a truly impressive family home. Esposito began his career as a visual merchandiser for Prada and Donna Karan, and as a design consultant for Ralph Lauren; all of which have greatly influenced his present style in interior design. At Oak Lodge in Hampstead Heath, a newly built property, the project certainly took its lead from his considerable experience. “We usually reconfigure layouts to create the most effective use of space and circulation,” explains Esposito. “But here the only structural change we made was to extend the master suite to create a walk-in wardrobe and a bigger en-suite, so, goverened by the apartment’s footprint, we concentrated on creating an high quality range of finishes.” This attention to detail shows throughout, from the ‘fish-scale’ tiles that clad the wall in the entrance hall, especially created for them by Steve Charles’ Decorum Est, to polished plaster walls and bespoke wood panelling. “We used an Italian joinery company to create all the panelling and doors to the reception room, all designed by Oro Bianco, and off-set them with luxurious Ralph Lauren furniture to create a relaxing clublike atmosphere,” says Esposito. The effect is impressive. In addition, a seating area is framed by a Philip Tsiaras image split across nine panels, which then leads into the dining area, enhanced by a mirrored ceiling encased in bespoke Italian casting. In the master bedroom, the wardrobes are also bespoke pieces, designed by Oro Bianco, while the private balcony boats beautiful McKinnon & Harris patio furniture.

‘‘

Working in the fashion industry allowed me to appreciate how textiles, textures and patterns can work together to create a harmonious result

’’

Other rooms haven’t been forgotten either. “We are incredibly proud of the day-room,” says Esposito. “Created to allow the client to practice yoga and meditation in a soothing, yet multi-purpose space, the room was finished in dull gold polished plaster, with églomisé panels introducing nature and life.” Esposito’s creative direction at Hampstead Heath shows just how formative his years in the fashion world have been for his personal style. ‘It is amazing how much you can learn about someone simply from the way they put an outfit together and the pattern, fabric and colours they display in their dress sense,’ Esposito said. However, there is a clear distinction that must be made between fashion and interiors. ‘We try not to be guided by what the fashion and design industry offers to us at any one moment. I like to think I design individual projects for individual clients, where each projects’ essentials are based on my clients’ needs and lifestyles, rather than on seasons or trends. Our aim is to create a timeless space that is built to last and to design furniture that will be passed down through the generations.” n www.orobiancointeriordesign.com

We prefer not to be measured by dimensions. Unless it’s a new dimension of accuracy.

No fewer than four exceptional mechanisms enhance the precision of the RICHARD LANGE TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite”: the tiny fusée-and-chain transmission, the delicate tourbillon, the ultra-thin Lange balance spring, and – not least – the patented stop-seconds device for the tourbillon which makes it possible to

set the watch with one-second accuracy in the first place. Never before has an A. Lange & Söhne watch been endowed with so many complications that simultaneously enhance its rate accuracy, settability, and readability. And so, this remarkable timepiece truly deserves the honorary attribute “Pour le Mérite”.

A Vision shAred: The Power PlAyers Watch-collectors looking for something unique to kick off their New Year could do a lot worse than procuring a 4987G or 5396G. They’re the reference numbers of the limited edition timepieces Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co. jointly released towards the end of last year. Commemorating the fifth anniversary of the former’s boutique in the latter’s world-famous Fifth Avenue flagship store, the watches pay homage to a partnership that stretches back to 1851. Limited to 50 pieces, the Art Decoinspired Ladies Gondolo watch (4987G) features a curved, tonneau-shaped case in 18-karat white gold, accented with no less than 164 round brilliant-cut diamonds. Two dial options are offered: choose the matt blue sunburst dial with white painted Roman numerals for understated elegance or the white mother-of-pearl dial with powdered gold numerals for a perfect day-to-evening timepiece. For men, the Annual Calendar creations (5396G) display the day, date and month in apertures, moon phases and 24-hour indication on a smart black dial. The watches are limited to an exclusive 100 pieces and all have a sapphire-crystal case back, as well as featuring an exclusive engraving. As these are available only in the States, you’ll have to factor in the cost of a flight to get one.

Gold Rush

When experts from the watch world gathered at the 2012 Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix at the end of last year, it was TAG Heuer’s Mikrogirder that they voted the best overall watch of the year. “Our chronograph is the ultimate in high-precision timing; it consigns quartz to historical oblivion,” said JeanChristophe Babin, the company’s CEO, upon accepting the award. Other brands scooping gongs at what are effectively the Oscars of the watch industry included Chanel with its Flying Tourbillon Première (Best Ladies’ Watch) and MB&F with its Legacy Machine N°1 (winner of both Best Men’s Watch and the Public’s Choice award). Another noteworthy victor was HYT’s H1 Titanium Black DLC (Innovation Watch Prize), a watch that uses two reservoirs of fluorescent liquid to indicate the time. www.gphg.org/ horlogerie

Fresh from plugging the Seamaster Planet Ocean as 007’s wristwatch of choice, 2013 sees Omega extend the collection with the Seamaster Planet Ocean Ceragold. Distinguished from the rest of the range by ceramic Ceragold bezels (a material new to the world of watchmaking), the models come equipped with a helium escape valve and Omega’s own Co-Axial calibre 9301 movement. The timepieces feature 18-karat red gold cases and allow would-be James Bonds to descend to a depth of 600 metres. Breitling No one does aviation watches quite like Breitling. As the company takes to the skies with new ambassador David Beckham, Richard Brown speaks to Vice President, Jean-Paul Girardin, about the future flight path of this famous brand

66

T

AG has Diaz and DiCaprio; Omega, Kidman and Clooney; Rolex, Federer, Woods and Placido Domingo. Breitling, comparatively, has wing-walkers, a jet-man and, err, John Travolta. Danny Zuko aside, when it comes to the employment of international ambassadors, Breitling hasn’t exactly invested in household names. Until, that was, last year drew to a close. Then, as December reared its head and Christmas wish-lists were being written, the brand unveiled its newest emissary: a marketing masterpiece in the shape of a (soon-to-be-Sir, surely?) David Beckham. A footballing-superstar-come-style-guru may not have been the most obvious choice for a brand more associated with aviation than sporting achievement but in terms of mass appeal, few come as universally adored as old Golden Balls. “It has to be more than a product placement,” said Breitling’s Vice President, Jean-Paul Girardin, of celebrity endorsements when I spoke to him two weeks before the Beckham news broke. “It is important that they are professional, that there should be a clear link between product and ambassador.” Other than the fact that he spends a lot of time in the air, flitting between time zones, the link between Beckham and the Transocean Chronograph Unitime (the watch for which he is now the face) might not be the most transparent. Not that it will matter too much to Breitling; for the company, the association allows for a press release that can be littered with words like “precision”, “style” and “icon”, as much to describe the footballer as the time-teller. Launched at this year’s Baselworld watch fair, the modern Unitime is a reinvention of a watch originally launched in the 50s, a self-winding world-timer that now exists as a sought-after collector’s piece. It’s an important watch for Breitling, one that simultaneously signifies its 21st century technical prowess, in the use of an in-house movement, and recognises its aviationdominated past.As Girardin explains: “In 2004 we started developing our first in-house mechanical movement which launched in 2009. Three years later [with the Transocean Chronograph Unitime] we have proved we are able to produce not just quantity but quality. It’s important to be able to show our consumers that we have that sort of in-house innovation capacity.” So confident is Breitling in the quality of that innovation that the watch comes with a five year warranty. As the images on these pages will testify, Breitling is a brand dedicated to aerial endeavours. What started in

the 1930s, when the company began producing onboard chronographs for aircraft cockpits, progressed into World War II, when Breitling became the go-to-brand for The Royal Airforce in equipping their Spitfire and Hurricane fighter planes. Seven years after the end of the war, the company launched the watch that would arguably define it: the Breitling Navitimer. With looks that animated aviation enthusiasts and mainstream watch lovers alike, the timepiece would quickly become a cult chronograph and design classic. Having celebrated its 60th anniversary this year, the Navitimer is today the world’s oldest mechanical chronograph still in production. “Technically, it is completely different from the originals,” points out Mr Girardin. “It is now water resistant, it is made with sapphire crystals and it uses different movements. But from a design point of view, it is very similar. We are the only watch company truly dedicated to aviation. In the Navitimer you can see that dedication and the consistency of our brand.” You can see it in other places too. Breitling’s sustained commitment to aviation sees it sponsoring the fixed-wing jet pack flights of Yves Rossy, as well as its own jet team, a team of wingwalkers and the first balloon to successfully circumnavigate the globe (the Breitling Orbiter) without stopping. But while the Navitimer may continue to act as the cornerstone of Breitling’s range, you can’t accuse the brand of relying on its most popular timepiece to swell sales. In 1995 Breitling launched the Emergency, a watch equipped with a radio transmitter that when activated broadcast at the frequency used for distress calls. Following a crash or a forced landing, and the unscrewing a protective cap, the Emergency would send out a signal on which rescuers could home in. Mr Girardin explains that the watch’s USP proved to be more than a novelty. “We have already located more than 20 people by using the Emergency. We have some examples we cannot tell you about, relating to the Air Forces; they are happy to be saved, but it seems not happy to talk about being saved. We had two UK helicopter pilots flying from South America to Darfur. When they hit a patch of high pressure they began to experience autorotation [where a helicopter’s rotor system begins turning through air pressure rather than engine power] and were forced to jump 30 feet from the helicopter into the sea. They both had an Emergency watch and we were able to save them.” More recently, there’s been Breitling’s collaboration with Bentley. Predating the relationships between the likes of Hublot and Ferrari, and Ball and BMW, the partnership has proved to be one of the more successful unifications between the automobile and watchmaking worlds. It came in 2003 when Bentley announced its return to the supercar sector with the world’s most powerful sedan: the Continental GT. “Bentley had been taken over by Volkswagen and completely repositioned as a truly luxury car, not just the production factory of Rolls-Royce. This made it a perfect match,” explains Mr Girardin. “They wanted to

68

collection

rejuvenate the classic days and the GT became the symbol of this new Bentley brand. They asked us to bring a little dynamism to the dashboard and we designed the Breitling of the Bentley GT dashboard clock.” The company then went one step further by presenting their customers with a collection titled Breitling for Bentley. “These were not just recreations but a completely new brand, almost; a new product, a new aesthetic, a new pricing position. It was a meeting of high performance and luxury.” The range now stretches to some 16 models, with customers being able to tailor the details of each to their specific requirements. No other watch-car collaboration can count itself such a triumph. Tracing its roots back to 1884, yet still independently owned, Breitling is a rarity within its industry; having served the same single company for more than 20 years, so is Girardin. In the next year or so, Breitling will hope that Brand Beckham proves as lucrative an investment as Brand Bentley did, but what of the future after that? “There are now many brands claiming they have close links with aviation but we are the only ones truly focused on that relationship. Most of our technical features have been gained through this association. Some brands try to do everything; we know we cannot. We will continue to focus our energy and resources on that segment.” Of the luxury watch industry as a whole? “There won’t be as many changes as we have seen in recent years. There was a trend for the merging and acquisition of independent brands by big groups but now I think that the remaining independent brands are the ones that stand a good chance of coming into their stride. We are quick; we can create special products. “If you talk about the size of the watch, I think we’ve achieved the ultimate diameter. Breitling, for one, will not be going any bigger. You still have to wear your watch in a convenient manner. Geographically, I think the Swiss watch industry is about to go to war over China.” Let’s hope the Chinese like planes. If they don’t, Breitling can always rely on Beckham. n www.breitling.com

Like most one-of-a-kind items, the limited-edition Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra collection was discovered by chance. As the jewellery house was refurbishing its Place Vendôme residence, some planks of letterwood resembling hieroglyphs were unearthed. Untouched for 25 years, the founders set about carving the speckled black wood into the lucky four-leaf clover shape. The pieces were contrasted with rose-gold motifs and placed on simple chains. www.vancleefarpels.com

We have always loved Fabergé’s sense of tradition. Its latest Matelassé collection is inspired by the lavish furnishings of the Romanov palaces, featuring the quilted design inherent to Fabergé which recalls the classical-revival style of the turn of the century. Personal training

When it comes to fitness, we all have different goals and different needs. It seems natural then that the most effective workout must be a bespoke one, specially tailored for you. Bodydoctor, based in Primrose Hill and St John’s Wood, trains beginners and professionals alike to attain their goal in just a few weeks. The philosophy at the health and fitness centre is to expand physical boundaries gradually so that you gain both flexibility and energy, rather than overloading the body and ending up with sore and tight muscles. The best way to benefit from their expertise is through a six week personal training course, which combines resistance, core and flexibility work, as well as cardiovascular exercises. Your strength and heart-lung function is measured throughout the process, allowing the trainer to build a program suitable to your body composition and fitness level. By combining strength and flexibility in each exercise, Bodydoctor offers a fitness training much more efficient than your average gym. www.bodydoctor.com

ating well over the festive season can be challenging. There are delicious chocolates available all the time, and it seems a shame not to have just one more slice from the cheese board, or pour another glass of wine. Between Christmas and New Year many people gain weight – even those that are normally quite careful can put on a few pounds – and, while most people worry about an expanding waistline, they often do not consider the other effects festive eating habits can have on the body. Many of the foods and drinks that cause weight gain can also trigger Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). IBS is stomach pain or discomfort which is accompanied with unpredictable bowel habits, with sufferers complaining of bloating, urgency and difficulty going to the loo. The most common foods and drinks which can trigger the symptoms of IBS include all the usual Christmas culprits: • alcohol • fizzy drinks • chocolate • drinks that contain caffeine, such as tea, coffee or cola • processed snacks, such as crisps and biscuits • fatty foods • fried foods • Wheat and dairy products can also aggravate the stomach TrEaTMENTS IBS, though very common, can be debilitating when left unmanaged. There is currently no single test which confirms or refutes IBS, but blood tests, including wheat allergy, are required. Both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments can be

helpful, and one big change you can make is through your diet, cutting out as many of the food groups above as possible. Taking pro-biotics have also shown to have some benefit and are often favoured by patients as they are a natural treatment. It is also important to be careful of the kinds of fibre you eat if you have IBS; soluble fibre found in fruits can be helpful, but in many patients consuming large quantities of insoluble dietary fibre (bran, roughage) can make matters worse, by exacerbating pain or bloating. Drug treatment aims to alleviate symptoms with medications to act on pain, constipation, and diarrhoea. You may be offered antispasmodics to help with spasms or cramps and anti-diarrhoeals to help with loose bowels and urgency. If dietary fibre supplementation is unsuccessful then a number of laxatives can also be considered. Due to the key role the nervous system plays in the digestive tract, some anti-depressant drugs can also be very effective when used at low doses, while stress management – such as relaxation training and meditation – can help, as can regular exercise, walking, yoga and getting adequate sleep. If you have a high body mass index (BMI) as Dr Lisa anderson explains below, and regularly eat a diet which lists the foods above, you may be at higher risk of developing IBS. So take care of what you eat over Christmas and look out for the tell-tale symptoms: • abdominal pain and cramping • a change in your bowel habits – bloating and swelling of your abdomen • excessive wind • an urgent need to go to the toilet • a feeling that you need to open your bowels even if you have just been to the toilet • a feeling you have not fully emptied your bowels

GP SESSIONS: ObESIty Dr Lisa Anderson, Private GP at The Wellington Hospital, looks at the medical effects of obesity a recent survey found that 26 per cent of adults in England are obese. Obesity describes somebody who is very overweight and has a high degree of body fat. The most commonly used way to assess this is the body mass index. BMI is simply your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. You can do this yourself by using an online BMI healthy weight calculator. If your BMI is: • 20 - 24.9, you would be considered a normal weight • 25 - 29, you would be considered overweight • 30 - 40, you would be considered obese • over 40, you would be considered as morbidly obese Being obese increases your risk of

developing a number of serious and potentially life-threatening conditions, such as: • Type 2 diabetes • Heart disease • Some types of cancer, such as: breast and colon cancer • Stroke • Depression • Back and knee problems The goals of treating obesity are: • to prevent further weight gain • to gradually lose weight through a combination of a calorie-controlled diet and regular exercise • to avoid regaining any lost weight • to improve your general health and reduce the risk of obesity-related complications If your BMI is over 25, and you would like to reduce this, do this through eating a healthy balanced diet and take up regular exercise which you begin slowly and build yourself up to.

Hedonism Wines The Hedonistic ancient Greeks believed that the pursuit of pleasure was a worthy endeavour, and it is a philosophy that Hedonism Wines in Mayfair seems to be following closely. The concept behind the sparkling new two-floor wine shop is that they either stock every single wine or spirit you are after, or else they source it for you. Tremendous attention is given to every single bottle – the 3,500 wines and 1,000 spirits are immaculately presented in a temperature and humidity controlled space, and the extensive shop offers everything from everyday wines to extremely rare vintage bottles – their oldest one dates back to 1774. It’s safe to say they own one of the most valuable wine cellars in London; or in other words, a true paradise for oenophiles. For those with less wine knowledge, the staff – made up of Michelinstarred sommeliers – can provide expert advice to guide you through wine tasting sessions. www.hedonism.co.uk

A very merry ChristmAs Nigel Lister, head sommelier at The York and Albany in Camden reveals some of his best suggestions for food and wine matching this Christmas

A

s family and friends gather round the dinner table during Christmas, certain traditions fall into place – turkey, goose or maybe that well-hung rib of beef. But what about the wine? Is it time to open that special bottle or will everyone be too busy chatting and tucking in to notice? Whatever you choose, I would always try to take certain things into account. First of all, consider the weight and texture of the food, matching lighter wines to lighter dishes and vice versa. Red wine can drink beautifully with fish for example, as long as it has lower tannins like pinot noir or Beaujolais, especially if the fish is firm and been caramelised in a hot pan with butter for instance. Secondly – and this is especially true at Christmas – the accompanying sauces need to be taken into consideration when choosing wine. Turkey may be a lighter meat, but throw in cranberry and bread sauces, and a rich gravy, not to mention your chipolatas and stuffing, and you have quite rich flavours. That said, ask seven sommeliers what goes best with turkey and you’ll probably get seven different answers. With this in mind you should relax, safe in the knowledge that there is no right or wrong choice. What do you fancy to drink? If it’s a white wine I’d suggest you go to Burgundy. The St. Aubin 1er Cru from Paul Pillot – like the vast majority of white burgundy – is 100 per cent chardonnay; elegantly oaked, it has enough personality to cope with the various flavours and a freshness to clean the palate. It’s special enough to feel like an occasion wine too. Its more famous (and expensive) neighbours Puligny and Chassagne Montrachet would be happy partners too. If you’d rather drink red, then you could happily stay in Burgundy with pinot noirs from Nuits St George, Gevrey Chambertin or Cote de Nuits Village – or you might prefer the fantastic Clos Henri from Marlbrough, New Zealand. My preference, though, would be to head down to the Rhone valley for a delicious Chateauneuf du Pape – the Reserve des Oliviers, from Favier. Rich and spicy, yet fruity and elegant, I think it would step up to the plate marvellously. Another popular choice for the big day is beef. If we were serving it as we do at The York and Albany – a roasted fillet of Hereford beef, creamed wild mushrooms and fondant potatoes – then I would have to opt for the 1998 Chianti Classico Reserva from Cortevecchia, Tuscany. www.gordonramsay.com/ yorkandalbany

he problem with having a favourite local eatery is that if you visit too often, and the menu doesn’t change, it’s in very real danger of becoming samey. Luckily, not only does Michael Nadra Primrose Hill have a large restaurant spread over three floors, but it also boasts a wonderful courtyard garden and a cosy martini bar, making it the kind of place you can keep returning to without getting dining ennui. dine in the martini bar for a cocktail. Cosily ensconced on one of the sofas, looking out at the courtyard while sipping on our excellent drinks and perusing the delicious sounding menu we soon forgot about the wind and rain. The menu here has a variety of tasting options, or a simple prix fixe offering six or seven starters, mains and puddings to choose from. After trying some of their delicious homemade breads, we opted to start with tempura of soft shell crab and black tiger prawn, scallop and chive dumplings. The crab came with a daikon salad, carrot and ginger purée, roasted chilli, garlic, soy honey and was an excellent example of Asian-inspired cooking, boasting well-sourced and tasty crab and excellent complementary flavours. The dumplings – also Asian-inspired – were excellently cooked, showing real skill for dim sum; served with a spinach and broccoli velouté and crisp red onions they had an engaging range of textures and tastes. For our main course the flavours sat much more in the European stable, with venison cooked three ways and grilled iberico presa. The venison saddle, shank and sausage roll were a revelation, the sweet pastry and pungent deer a fantastic take on a sausage roll, while both the saddle and shank were excellently cooked, pink and juicy. Root vegetable rosti and cavolo nero provided well–matched seasonal flavours, while the port jus was rich and sweet. The star of the meal, though, was the Iberico Presa – a cut from the muscle between the top of the shoulder and the beginning of the loin. Grilled, and served with confit pork belly, this dish was excellently cooked, the Iberico pork especially tender and flavourful; accompanied by savoy cabbage, creamed potatoes and butternut squash purée, the latter providing a subtle sweet hit after the delicious pork. We accompanied this divine food with a lovely bottle of Gigondas from the impressive wine list, and finished our evening with a little nightcap back in the martini bar, vowing to return in the summer to see how different it looks with sunshine pouring through the floor to ceiling windows. Primrose Hill is lucky to have such a good neighbourhood restaurant serving such high quality food just steps away from your front door. 42 Gloucester Avenue, NW1 www.restaurant-michaelnadra.co.uk

The key to this dish is not to use too much prawn dressing otherwise you drown the whole dish in sauce. Good ingredients will speak for themselves; so prawns must be firm, fresh and sweet, not soft and mushy, the lettuce must be crisp, and the vinaigrette not too oily.

Murano, W1 Italian fine-dining is a very on-trend movement in London at the moment, but Murano does it best, says Emma Johnson

A

ngela Hartnett has long shaken off her Gordon-Ramsayprotégé mantel, and established herself as an outstanding chef in her own right. Having spearheaded the opening of both York & Albany in Camden and fine-dining Italian Murano in Mayfair within months of each other in 2008, she is now a fully-fledged member of the London restaurant scene. Seasonal selections are big news at Murano – they recently offered an entire white truffle menu – along with a hyper-seasonal autumn menu, and tasting options too. On the night we visited, flowers had been replaced on the tables by tiny pumpkins and the warm lighting and low hum of conversation made for a cosy, warm escape from the cold winter streets. The menu is split into five sections, with four savoury options and one dessert selection, prices start from two courses up to five, meaning you can create the perfect meal based on how you’re feeling. We started with some of the amazing Italian breads they specialise in here – salty focaccia and crunchy olive sticks soaked up in divine olive oil were sublime. We followed this with some pheasant agnolotti and pumpkin tortelli, the latter an exceptional example of how just a few seasonal ingredients

cooked with expert precision can create a wonderful dish. Scallop and sea bream ceviche was up next, the herb tempura a delicious accompaniment. Following this, the kitchen kindly put together a little taster of their white truffle risotto – with the last white truffle in the kitchen. (We’d expressed sadness that the white truffle menu wasn’t available the evening we visited, such is the exclusivity of this wonderful fungus). This was easily the star turn of the meal, the white truffle pungent and bold through the rice, tempered by excellent seasoning and the tangy bitterness of some Parmesan. Further dishes of lamb with cavalo nero and monkfish with smoked bone marrow impressed with their depth of flavour and creativity, while butternut squash torta with stem ginger ice cream, was a surprisingly successful dessert. Finally, don’t forget the wine here, one of the best Italian wine lists in London, this offers some of the most interesting and unique bottles you’re likely to find outside Italy. n www.muranolondon.com

he one million hectare Greater Blue Mountains region has been a UNESCO World Heritage Area since 2000, thanks to its remarkable geographic, botanic and cultural values, including sites of Aboriginal cultural significance. The endless panorama of peaks and forested valleys is only an hour or so west of Sydney and easily reached by car or train. As we set off, the seemingly-endless suburban sprawl of Sydney eventually gives way to fields and open spaces, and before long we are surrounded by dramatic landscapes as far as the eye can see. Covered in eucalyptus trees, the breathtaking wilderness is indeed blue, a feat of nature caused by light refracting through the particles of oil from the swathes of Australia’s signature tree. Our base for the next few days is Lilianfels, a Luxury Collection Resort located in the town of Katoomba, hub of the National Park. The elegant country house hotel is set in two acres of manicured gardens, perched on the edge of the escarpment with incredible views over the surrounding landscape. Formerly the residence of New South Wales’ Chief of Justice, Lilianfels is now a favourite destination for foodies, spa aficionados, romantics and nature lovers. The old world chic may not be to everyone’s taste, and certainly wouldn’t work in the city, but up here in the mountains it feels like a home from home and is just perfect after an active day spent exploring the area. The open-plan salon, complete with grand piano, is full of cosy sofas and big armchairs in which to lose yourself with a good book, or relax with a cup of tea. French doors open onto a pretty terrace, perfect for lingering over one of Lilianfels’ famous High Teas on a sunny afternoon. There’s more than a hint of the country house here, and the reading and billiard rooms add to the effect. Leonardo DiCaprio and Toby Maguire stayed here recently whilst filming The Great Gatsby, and it’s no stretch of the imagination to envision them propping up the stately mahogany bar (in costume of course!), pre-dinner cocktail in hand. The relaxing atmosphere is greatly aided by the wonderful staff – service is friendly and unpretentious, ever present and yet discreet. There are 85 rooms and suites, all recently refurbished and decked out in elegant Victorian style with canopied beds and pretty floral designs, with spacious marble bathrooms and all the technology you could need, including iPod docks and big flat screen TVs. Our room looks out over the Jamison Valley, and with the window open we have a constant supply of fresh mountain air tinged with the cleansing smell of eucalyptus. In the grounds of the hotel there’s a heated swimming pool surrounded by loungers and beautiful gardens, and a tennis court shaded by pine trees. Back inside there’s another pool, and the Lilianfels Spa with four treatment rooms, sauna, steam room and hot tub. The spa offers all-day pampering packages, stress-busting massages and various other beauty and

therapeutic treatments. The signature treatment, ‘The Lilianfels Retreat’, is an extremely indulgent four hour experience which includes a Payot facial, massage, body wrap and polish and is finished off with a volcanic stone foot treatment. Lilianfels’ crowning glory, which Sydneysiders frequently drive an hour and a half for, is the food. Darley’s restaurant, housed in the original Lilianfels House, is famous for fine modern Australian cuisine using seasonal, locally-sourced produce. The dining room features ornate original fireplaces, crystal chandeliers, designer wall prints and plush furnishings. The food is sublime, and we enjoy delights such as tuna sashimi, fabulous local venison and Blue Mountains Wagyu beef during our stay. Even the side dishes are memorable, my particular favourite being the crispy polenta chips with rosemary, Manchego and truffle mayonnaise. The desserts are suitably delicate, the perfect finish to an extraordinary meal, and the impressive wine list features excellent Australian wines as well as international varieties. It’s no surprise that Darley’s has won a ‘Chef’s Hat’ – the Sydney equivalent of a Michelin star – for several years running. Echoes, also a Luxury Collection Resort, sits adjacent to Lilianfels, and has just 14 rooms and suites. Previously separate properties, Echoes and Lilianfels are now combined under Starwood’s Luxury Collection umbrella, and guests staying at either can use the facilities from both. The recently refurbished rooms all have uninterrupted panoramas of the National Park, and are contemporary in design with outdoor seating areas. Echoes Restaurant is right on the edge of the cliff, and serves up contemporary Australian dishes accompanied by an extensive wine list from vineyards in the nearby Hunter Valley. The backdrop of mountains and lush valleys is distracting to say the least, and in the summer diners can sit on the terrace and soak up the fresh air, sounds of the bush below and an 80km view. Luckily the food is good enough to bring our attention back into the room, and when visiting we try mouth-watering crispy tempura soft shell crab with green papaya, goat’s cheese mousse decorated with pretty flowers, macadamia crusted lamb loin and pan fried Barramundi. The desserts are almost sculptural, and the melt-in-the-mouth passion fruit and Italian meringue tartlet is so delicious I end up having it two meals in a row. Guests at both Lilianfels and Echoes have a great variety of activities available right on their doorstep. Just around the corner at Echo Point is the spectacular Three Sisters rock formation, and from here there are numerous bush walk trails varying from an easy amble over to the first Sister, to a thigh-burning descent right to the bottom of the valley. Complimentary bikes are

available at Lilianfels, and there are scenic mountain bike trails to nearby waterfalls, caves and canyons. The Blue Mountains region is rich in indigenous Australian heritage and examples of Aboriginal habit can be found in many places in the area. Just around the corner from the resort is the Koomurri Aboriginal Centre at Echoes Point, where we watched a story-telling performance, and learnt about the local human history. A great way to see the Jurassic Park landscape is at nearby Scenic World, which includes the Scenic Railway – the steepest railway in the world – descending 415 metres through the sandstone cliffs to the rainforest floor, and the Skyway, a glass-bottom aerial cable car that traverses 250m above one of the vast valleys, giving a great view of waterfalls and ravines below. An hour’s drive from Katoomba took us to the spectacular Jenolan Caves, the world’s oldest open cave system. An enormous network of underground limestone ‘rooms’, the caves were formed about 400 million ye ars ago and ar e fille d with s trange and twis ted sculptural formations. For an educated and insider view of the natural environment, we took a couple of tours with Tim Tranter, owner-operator of Tread Lightly Eco Tours. An award winning guide, wildlife rescuer, fire and rescue team member and all-round eco-guru, Tim has lived in the Blue Mountains for over 45 years and anything he doesn’t know about flora and flora, geology and natural history probably isn’t worth knowing. While hiking along forest paths, Tim imparted knowledge on everything from how the mountains were formed to

the type of stone we were walking on, to the species of bird flying past. On another day, we woke at dawn and Tim drove us in his four wheel drive through the Megalong Valley spotting wildlife and admiring the varied landscape, before heading off road into the National Park. Our destination was a clearing on a hillside, where we were to have breakfast with kangaroos. The ‘roos are wild, and not remotely interested in sharing breakfast with us, but we have a marvellous spread of organic, eco-friendly goodies including homemade bircher muesli, while watching young joeys box with each other and wallabies and ‘roos graze in small groups just across the clearing from us. Before reluctantly making our way to the airport, we couldn’t leave without spending some time in Sydney. For a short city stay, Sheraton on the Park is a perfect five star central base. Rooms have magnificent views over leafy Hyde Park, St Mary’s Cathedral and Sydney Middle Harbour. Ours was a flying visit, but we squeezed in a tour of the iconic Opera House and had lunch at the famous Bondi Beach – for a true Aussie experience – before getting on a plane home. n

New Year’s eve Parties Start 2013 with style in the city Las Vegas

LaS VegaS One of the most opulent New Year’s Eve celebrations must be in Las Vegas, the city of indulgence. On the last day of 2012 the city comes alive with hundreds of shows and entertainment, but for the utmost in parties we recommend the Mandarin Oriental’s presidential package. This decadent offering includes three nights in the presidential suite, a gala dinner at their restaurant with world-renowned chef Pierre Gagnaire personally cooking six courses, spa treatments and a table at the Mandarin Bar. www.mandarinoriental.com/lasvegas

Sydney Sydney

Sydney Harbour is famous for hosting the most impressive fireworks in the world, meaning the bay overflows with tourists eager to take a peek at the lights. For a front row view of the action, book a table, or even a suite, at one of the waterfront hotels near Sydney Harbour Bridge. The most privileged view can be caught from the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel – their waterfront rooms overlook Sydney Bay, stretching from the Harbour Bridge to the Opera House. www.fourseasons.com/sydney

Madeira

It is said that Funchal has one of the best Fim de Ano (end of the year) celebrations in the world. By the end of November the streets are already tastefully decorated with lights and the seasonal flowers of Madeira, including the bright red poinsettia. As New Year’s Eve approaches, streets fill with music, artisanal food and craft stalls. On 31 December, hotels throughout the city offer decadent gala dinners, the best being at The Vine, a sophisticated and modern five star hotel situated in the city centre, which offers panoramic views of Funchal. www.hotelthevine.com

Rio de Janeiro

Opulence is the key to the midnight celebrations in Rio, with a dazzling 15 minute fireworks extravaganza heralding 1 January. The Sofitel, one of the most prestigious hotels in Rio, has 388 rooms with balconies where you can catch a glimpse of the festivities from afar while enjoying a sumptuous dinner. If you feel like popping your toes in the sand after the show, head to Ipanema beach, a five minute walk from the hotel, to enjoy the live music and pop a bottle of champagne. www.sofitel.com/rio-de-janeiro

In the run-up to New Year, this celebrated city of music hosts an array of concerts and operas at the Musikverein, while the Staatsoper stages its traditional performance of ‘Die Fledermaus’. On New Year’s Eve the height of the celebrations converges with live entertainment in the city centre’s paved streets around Stefanplatz. For a night of pure Viennese elegance you can also attend Le Grand Bal at the Hofburg Palace, where a whole evening’s catalogue of dance entertainment is accompanied by a luxurious gala dinner. Emma Johnson visits a secluded private house in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside and finds a warm, welcoming escape from modern life

W

aking up at Queenwood Lodge – a private house situated amidst the trees and rolling slopes of the Bowood Golf Course – it’s hard to believe I left London just 12 short hours ago. Drawing back the curtains, I can see frost on the grass, and beyond the garden gates, deer are grazing in the morning sunlight. Downstairs the sounds and smells of coffee being freshly brewed and breakfast cooking make their way up the winding staircase. Outside it is perfectly still and quiet, aside from a few intrepid golfers ambling across the fairway. A couple of hours down the M4 from London – or just over an hour via train direct from Paddington – Bowood Hotel, Golf and Country Club is an idyllic country spot adjacent to the renowned and beautiful Bowood House and Gardens. The hotel itself boasts a luxurious spa, numerous well-appointed bedrooms and a great restaurant offering modern and innovative cuisine – but by far the best way to experience this special place is by hiring out Queenwood Lodge, which sleeps eight and is offered with full or partial catering and a butler service. Decorated in a classic country style, complete with an inviting sitting room, study, two open fires and a grand dining room, the house has plenty of space for large families or groups of friends to relax and adjust to a slower pace of life. On waking the morning after we arrive, we slope downstairs to a table beautifully laid for breakfast, with bread rolls and pastries fresh from the kitchen, and locally-sourced eggs and bacon sizzling away. The chef and housekeeper tend expertly to our every need, never encroaching but always on hand if we need them. Queenwood Lodge feels so like your own home that it can be initially strange to be so looked after in your own house, as it were, but we

find we get used to it quickly…! Following our hearty breakfast, the boys head off for a round of golf – leaving direct from our front door and taking a golf buggy to the clubhouse – while the women of the party decide to take a stroll through the grounds to the spa. After a lazy morning of steaming and dozing in the jacuzzi we wander slowly back to the house to prepare lunch. You can have a fullycatered provision at Queenwood, but we like the gentle pace of providing our own lunch and lingering at the table well into the afternoon, feeling very spoilt when Ellie, our housekeeper, turns up after lunch and insists we leave all the clearing

There’s only one thing for it, we decide, we will simply have to return

’’

and washing up to her. A soothing couple of hours in front of the roaring log fire follows, before we decide to head out for a late afternoon drink at the local pub, The Landsdowne, situated just outside the majestic Bowood gates. The walk through the woods is pleasantly peaceful and, rejuvenated by a couple of ales, we return to the house, where tea and coffee awaits us. Showering and changing for a dinner that we’ve ordered previously in the day, feels wonderfully decadent, and as we are ushered into the dining room – beautifully laid with the best china, crockery, linen, fresh flowers and lots of candles – we are all making resolutions to employ permanent staff on our return home. We dine that evening on scallops, venison, fillet steak, raspberry mille-feuille and salted crème caramel, beautifully cooked by our private chef, and enjoy some of our own wine, with no extra corkage fees, though you can equally order from their great wine list at the main Shelburne Restaurant. We sleep well that night, in the spacious, beautifully appointed bedrooms complete with large bathrooms and wonderful showers. The next day dawns bright and sunny and, before leaving, we take a gentle stroll around the garden, where we find croquet sets, pool tables and a large garden table. Wistfully we imagine being here in the summer, watching the sun set behind the golf course while sipping a glass of rose and nattering about our day. There’s only one thing for it, we decide, we will simply have to return. A thought that gives us all another reason to smile. n www.bowood-hotel.co.uk
