Vineyards and fine-dining in the country

T
he Vineyard at Stockcross is a unique and marvellous beast; part hotel, part spa, part wine school, part gastronomic country escape, it exudes charm and class, and boasts a barely-noticeable hour commute from central London. We head down there for a weekend away on a boiling Friday afternoon in late May, and after checking into our generous modern suite, which looks out over the large outdoor terrace, potter down to the waterside tables to enjoy a welcome glass of wine amid the quiet peace of this impressive hotel. We’re here for one of the hotel’s special wine evenings, tasting
throughout the room for us to peruse, while we enjoy a glass of Schramsberg Blanc de Blanc, Calistoga from the Napa Valley with canapés of smoked salmon, pate, arancini and cheese puffs. Dinner commences in the large private dining room, a stunning space with a wall to wall frieze depicting a classic vineyard view. Light pea veloute served with the most intriguing sauvignon blanc I’ve had in ages is a lovely way to start, followed by millefeuille of crab scented with lime and tomato jelly. We move onto a sublime chardonnay next, Peter Micheal Winery Belle Cote Chardonnay from Sonoma County. The wine is buttery, rich and vibrant, and served with foie gras is an absolute revelation, everyone at the table is clearly impressed. Next up is a Pinot Noir from Andersen Valley, Mendocino Country. This smooth, pungent Littorai ‘Les Larmes’ is matched with a steamed sea bass fillet, mussel broth, lemon grass and braised leeks. It’s an inspired choice to pair this delicious fish with this light, but bold pinot noir. We finish our savoury courses with a real
flourish – slow cooked Scottish beef is served with a Rudd Estate Proprietary red wine from Oakville, Napa Valley. The beef is cooked to perfection, but the star turn here is the wine – served in a unique carafe shaped like a coiled snake with a long tall neck it expertly and intriguingly pours out exactly one glass at a time before needing to be set upright to repour the next glass. Genius. Throughout our meal Galmiche dips in and out of the room, talking about how he has matched the dishes to the wine, divulging interesting titbits about his cooking style and food choices; the foie gras, we find out, is from a small farm in France that Galmiche has personally visited, where the geese are hand fed, creating a subtler meat that works beautifully as a pate. And while we’re eating, director of wine James Hocking intermittently talks to us about what we’re drinking, including fascinating information about oak barrels, terroirs and climate. A blind tasting leaves even the most discerning of tasters stumped, but it’s good fun and the now quite merry band of guests get eagerly involved in the game. This is followed by a delectable trio of desserts, coupled with a Justin Vineyards ‘Obtuse’, Paso Robles. A perfect sweet end to a really exceptional meal. The next morning we enjoy some much needed chill out time in the spa, clearing our heads, before enjoying a leisurely breakfast in the smart, light dining room and a walk around the
grounds. The Vineyard is a lovely place to escape to for a weekend, quiet and professionally run, every little detail has been thought about here, and it offers so much more than other country hotels. n www.the-vineyard.co.uk

We are halfway through 2011 now, and what a year it’s been already. We loved watching the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge tie the knot at the end of April, a thoroughly royal affair which delivered on all the fashion levels we had hoped it would. Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen created the kind of wedding dress that will transcend years and styles to remain an icon of the very best of British. Meanwhile, family and friends – David and Victoria, Beatrice and Eugenie, Pippa and Harry – provided a good dose of star quality, fashion faux pas and rife speculation respectively. As all good weddings should be, it was an event to be talked about, discussed, dissected and reminisced on for months afterwards. And if the royal wedding, coupled with racing action from Aintree, Ascot and Cheltenham, has taught us anything, it’s that one really should be in possession of a completely fabulous hat. Enter the master of millinery, Stephen Jones, whose work with Ascot this year has created some of the most striking head pieces we’ve ever seen. Gabrielle Lane talks inspiration with Jones on p28.
(p.27), talking to the inimitable Arlene Philips about dancing through life (p.8) and reviewing the results-driven hydrodermabrasion facial (p.44). While in interiors we’re talking life alfresco (p.32), adopting boutique hotel chic in your own home (p.38) and admiring timeless flatware design from Marcel Wanders (p.37). Food and drink comes in the form of Marcus Wareing’s new venture at the St Pancras Renaissance (p.81), the best alfresco dining and perfect wines for summer dinner parties (p.80). If you’re still pondering holiday destinations, then have a look at our luxury China tour on p.70, while a weekend away at country hotel The Vineyard (P. 74) is the perfect way to recharge your batteries. And you don’t even need to go too far from home to treat yourself; head to p.12 for our guide to the very best boutiques and local independents on your high street. There are gems to be found on every corner, which is exactly why we love North West London so much!
Sporting action also forms our fashion shoot this month, with a dedicated men’s polo special (p.20), while we showcase what excitements and upsets Wimbledon holds for us (p.62) and find out what’s on at the Festival of Speed, Goodwood (p.61).

Lee Knights talks to dancing queen Arlene Phillips about family life, big breaks and staying busy
A
rlene Phillips is having a quiet day. It starts with breakfast – a double espresso, a mug of jasmine tea and a small piece of sourdough bread with marmite. “I’m always on a diet. If I wasn’t, I’d be the size of a house. I’d love to indulge in a big tub of Haagen-Dazs, sweets, cakes, all of it, three times a day but I won’t do it,” Arlene vows. The morning kicks off with phone interviews with journalists at home, then she’s off into town for a couple of BBC radio interviews. “I’m mad about fruit. I’ve got tangerines in my handbag now to eat on the way!” In the afternoon, Arlene is at dance studios in North West London, working out new routines for The Wizard of Oz. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s latest production opened at the Palladium in March and features Phillips’ choreography. “There’s still work to do, developing new choreographies. A couple of little things need to be finished today, and they have to be right,” she insists. Arlene says she jumped at the chance to work with Lord Lloyd Webber again. “I choreographed for Andrew on Starlight Express and The Sound of Music. It’s fantastic working with him again. There are certain people I love working with and Andrew is one of them.” Tonight, Arlene is relaxing. “I’ve got tickets to see the Pet Shop Boys’ Most Incredible Thing at Sadler’s Wells. I don’t get many free evenings so I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a chance to do my own thing and spend time with my partner Angus.” I’m on the phone talking to Arlene Phillips about food, calories, diets, and weight watching – and it feels ordinary. I feel I’m chatting to one of my girlfriends, not the tough, outspoken TV celebrity dance judge and the UK’s best known choreographer for over three decades. With all the professional hats she wears, I ask her, how does she see herself? “The most important job I have is being a mother. Nothing I do professionally compares with that. Overall, that’s how I think of myself,” she says. Arlene has two daughters, Alana, 31, and Abi, 20. She had her first child when she was 36, and her second child, Abi, when she was 47. “It’s just great to have a child when you’re 47. I coped fantastically. I was totally ready for it, I embraced it, I enjoyed it hugely. Having the girls is everything – there’s simply nothing that can touch it.” For Arlene, the perfect day is Sunday, when she’s not working. “I get up, go for a swim, come back home and have a lovely breakfast. For lunch, I have my family and extended family round and the house

is buzzing. In the afternoon, I take Polly, my dog – a Manchester terrier – out for a walk. I love Hampstead because it is so easy to get into the West End, where most of my work is based, and I love walking on Hampstead Heath with Polly. In the evening, it’s just a quiet evening in with my partner.” However, domestic goddess she isn’t, Arlene admits. “Angus does the cooking in our house. I’m a completely useless in the kitchen. I can’t cook at all. I’m talking about not being able to boil an egg or make toast at the same time. I like looking at roast potatoes, but I can’t make them and I won’t eat them!” Remaining resolutely true to herself and her family values, Arlene Phillips seems to run against the grain of the celebrity world she inhabits, a square peg in a round hole, an anti-luvvy. “I find it easy to switch off. Once I’ve shut the door at home, that’s it, that’s my time with my partner and my family.” Right now, life is just the way Arlene likes it – busy. She’s a multi-armed, multi-talented goddess, juggling judging on the latest series of BBC1’s So You Think You Can Dance; with producing Vincent and Flavia’s first show Midnight Tango (now on nationwide tour), while keeping the dance magic alive on The Wizard of

Oz. Somehow, she still has plenty of time left over to schmooze at book festivals, promoting Alana Dancing Star, her new series of books for children (named for her daughter); launch her third and latest fashion collection for Marisota and wave around her jewellery collection being sold by QVC. Is this all part of a grand plan to turn yourself into a brand, I ask? “No! Not at all! I’m far too down to earth for all that. I’m very lucky. I get offered these
opportunities and I really enjoy what I do. I need to focus, keep going. I love the buzz, that’s why I do it.” Now an impossible 67, Phillips shows no sign of slowing down. If anything, she seems to be gathering momentum. “Maybe there’ll come a time when I’ll put my feet up. Maybe one day I’ll start slowing down,” she says in a dream-like voice that sounds like the opening of a song she is not ready to sing. “I don’t have to work at being like this, I am like this, it’s just normal for me. I just can’t sit still. I naturally seem to have a lot of energy I suppose.” Right now, the publicity storm that erupted in the wake of Phillips’ controversial sacking as a judge on Strictly Come Dancing in 2009 seems a long way off. “There’s nothing to deal with now,” she says quietly. “It was part of life and life moves on. There are a lot of troubles worse than that. When you lose someone you love very early on in life, you know nothing else can really happen to you.” Arlene was only 15 when her mother died at the age of 43. “This was a very hard time for the family. I was much more of a child then than kids are today. Very protected, school was very strict and I was still wearing little white socks.” Despite this early loss, the parental support she enjoyed as a child has shaped her life. Arlene’s passion for dance started when she was a small child growing up in Prestwich near Manchester, she says. “I don’t remember it, but I’ve been told I was always dancing and loved performing. Mum and Dad both loved ballet and dance, I don’t know where that came from.” Although the family was not well off, Arlene’s parents were determined their daughter would fulfil her dream of being a ballerina. “Somehow, my parents found a way to pay for my dance classes.” Early on, Arlene had to leave behind her dream to be a top ballet dancer. “Ballet isn’t something you can do because you want to do it. You have to have the right body to enhance what classical dance is about. But I had boobs and a bum.” Arlene had to find another way to make dance her life. Her solution was characteristic – she invented her own unique dance style. “I took everything I’d learned – jazz dancing, ballroom, Latin, street, ballet, everything – mixed it up and created my own style. Then I started teaching it.” In the 70’s, Arlene shot to fame as the founder and choreographer of Hot Gossip. “I got the group together from my best students – including Sarah Brightman. We worked hard for three years’ before we got spotted and became an ‘overnight success,’” Arlene quips ironically. Arlene still revels in the group’s raunchy reputation. “We did a lot of wild and crazy routines on the Kenny Everett show. It was the first time anybody had done or seen anything like it. It was hhh-o-ttt,” she draws the word out with relish. “A lot of our success was down to luck. We got spotted at the right time by the right person. I was really, really lucky.” n

ottering around Hampstead ahead of writing a feature about the area’s amazing boutiques, is hardly a challenging task. However, selecting the best outlets for inclusion, most certainly is. It is not nearly enough to say that Hampstead boasts great shopping amenities. These are not random stores, but the unique, stylish and super-friendly, which draw some of the city’s most glamorous residents.
emergence of the trend for patchwork quilts and handmade designs, this boutique has amassed an enviable collection of pieces from brands such as English Durham and their American and Welsh counterparts. Once you’ve picked out something, head to Henry & Williams Flower Company which has a stunning selection of blooms. orders online, any visitor will agree that watching the team work their magic is fascinating. Wandering around, it’s easy to be charmed by the idyllic nature of the village and its creative and eyecatching shops. Those who would like to indulge their own artistic streak should definitely stop off at Oak Studio. The modern outlet not only sells art but offers courses in all manner of enjoyable skills such as vintage fabric collage, dress-making and flower arranging.
Fashion forward I started my day based on a recommendation from the founder of one of Primrose Hill’s most amazing vintage emporiums. Tucked away near the top of Heath Street, Cochinechine has a chic and serene atmosphere, but arguably should command a frenzy owing to its selection of beautiful clothing and accessories. This is the place to go if you are looking for elusive designers, and staff including Melanie and Elychia are happy to share their wonderful advice. Further along Heath Street is Hampstead Bazaar which was founded on the principle that the beautiful figure of a woman is deserving of gorgeous attire. For over forty years the boutique has commanded a celebrity following and owner Saf Khan is a real expert in creating contemporary pieces which allow for comfort and freedom of movement. Another fashionable outlet with its own army of regulars is Miriam London, easy to find owing to its vibrant pink façade which stands out amongst more muted shop fronts. The boutique is the exclusive UK stockist for the Reminiscence fragrance, a tempting Parisian scent, alongside many high-end designer brands such as Issa, Sass and Bide and Twenty8Twelve.

Culture vultures It’s well worth scheduling a stop at the Zebra One Gallery. Run by brother and sister team Dominic and Gabrielle, this independent art dealers features modern work from both established and emerging artists. Think abstract prints splashed with colour, unusual scenes and symbolic representations from British artists including Henry Moore and David Hockney and you’ll be on the right track. You can get any new purchases framed at The Print Room. The staff are experts at adding the finishing touches to art work, transforming pretty pictures into commanding and stylish features, ready for display at home.

Body beautiful After lengthy browsing, Pacifica Day Spa is a tempting next destination. Although not strictly a boutique, the cosy beauty retreat stocks a range of luxurious Elemis and Dermalogica skincare products. The treatment menu includes detoxifying wraps, wonderful facials and a wide range of massage and therapists are on hand to recommend the best options for you to use at home.
All that glitters Set anywhere a bespoke jewellers selling stunning square-cut aquamarines, diamond droplet earrings and glittering engagement rings, would be another real draw. But being positioned next to traditional boutiques in a secluded Hampstead thoroughfare gives Joule an especially great feel of exclusivity. Designer pieces from Christian Bauer, Takhol, Bunz, Tacori and Christian Wharton will dazzle any visitor.

Ahead of the journey home, forget uninspiring and bland bookstores and pick up an interesting read. Keith Fawkes is a cosy and traditional bookseller with a maze of corners and shelves. Whilst browsing here, you can’t help imagining that you’ll stumble across an elusive first edition; leather-bound novels sit side by side with hand-illustrated children’s books, cherished antique tomes and interesting limited print runs. The shop owners also purchase unwanted second hand books, for those looking to share their old favourites. Finally, don’t leave Flask Walk without perusing the trinkets available at J.M Pennifeather for more mature friends and relatives. If you’re looking to buy for special occasions, stylish pens, cards, diaries and other stationery are available here in a place where choosing a present is as much fun as receiving it. n

uxury label Fitriani has launched its stunning Autumn/Winter 2011 collection comprising ready-towear, made-to-measure and couture offerings. The range is entitled ‘The Firebird’ and owes its inspiration to the costume design of Diaghilev’s eponymous ballet. The intricate hand-crafting techniques employed in the original creations have been adopted to produce glamorous evening gowns and cocktail dresses adorned with delicate patterns and appliqué. Whilst there is a definite classical feel to the
pieces, jewelled embellishment and a gorgeous colour palette awash with navy, gold, orange and turquoise give the designs a chic and fashionable feel. The ready-to-wear collection can be viewed in Ftriani’s showroom at 32 Beauchamp Place, but the label is fast becoming renowned for its bespoke service which involves consultations over champagne, detailed fittings and customisation at the client’s request. n 23 Beauchamp Place, SW3 1NU www.fitriani.com

Dame Vivienne Westwood has created a limited edition jewellery collection which champions the need to preserve and protect the environment. Both couture and commercial pieces from the Get a Life Palladium range are inspired by nature and feature symbols of the acorn, oak tree and the heart. Westwood says: “The acorn represents the rainforest, its importance and how it is our first duty to save it. My focus at the moment is what one person can do; stop climate change and save the planet.” An oak leaf pagan-style brooch and tiara modelled on entwined branches are amongst the items which can be crafted on request, from the rare white metal. Rings, pendants and earrings are also available at Vivienne Westwood boutiques.

Master milliner Stephen Jones talks career inspirations and successes with Gabrielle Lane
fashion
S
ince bursting uncompromisingly onto the London style scene in the late seventies, Stephen Jones has achieved international acclaim and captivation – from the world of high society to that of high fashion. A former attendee of Central St Martin’s, the hat designs of Jones include understated occasion pieces for Princess Diana and lavish head-dresses for some of today’s most glamorous performers. “I love hats as objects,” explains Jones. “I was inspired to start designing them by the extraordinary milliners of the past and their love for the craft.” It is surely this enthusiasm which has kept him at the pinnacle of his profession for over thirty years. Jones first sent models sashaying down the catwalk in his eclectic creations in 1980 and since then he has collaborated with the likes of John Paul Gaultier, Dior and Marc Jacobs. However, having first worked together in the 1980s, it is Vivienne Westwood with whom he has partnered this year to create an iconic image celebrating the stylish history of Royal Ascot. “It was a pleasure to collaborate with Vivienne again - this time to celebrate the tercentenary of Royal Ascot,” he explains. “With the occasion as momentous, I wanted to create three hats that really captured the charm and history, as well as the excitement of modern Royal Ascot.” In an image shot by revered photographer Simon Proctor, an Edwardian fascinator, top hat and period bonnet are worn by a model against the backdrop of a racing scene, and although Jones aimed to acknowledge the glamorous history of the event with this project, he admits to finding inspiration all around him for his collections. “I find inspiration in every single moment of the day,” he says. “It could be a fabric or the wearer themselves. My Spring/Summer 2011 collection was inspired by the surrealist artist Marion Adnams.”
concierge
Accordingly, many of these designs have what the creator himself describes as a painter-like quality. Sculptural shapes are combined with colour shading achieved by literally painting the fabric, to breath-taking effect. When viewing the pieces, it is easy to forget that hats were once less popular accessories. “Hats have evolved from an etiquette piece to a trend item,” explains Jones. “This year Gucci featured hats all the way through their runway show.” Indeed it is working with designers and particularly emerging talent which Jones enjoys most, declaring new designers to be ‘fascinating’. He has already started to prepare his own line for Spring 2012, which is to be entitled ‘Brighton Belles’ in honour of the seaside city. “I am sketching the collection next weekend,” Jones chimes. “It’s an amazing life to have. It’s the cherry on the cake! Hats are the most fun part of clothing.” n Royal Ascot takes place from Tuesday 14 June to Saturday 18 June 2011. www.ascot.co.uk www.stephenjonesmillinery.com

news Home Help A recently launched property management service promises help with all manner of domestic requirements. Belinda Corani heads up the new venture, after a long and successful career in personal styling which fuelled numerous requests for interior consultation and wardrobe organisation. Belinda has undertaken and monitored various tasks such as furniture restoration, construction, auction house liaison and carpet repair and is already proving popular with the busy professionals in North West London. www.homeconscious.com
Donna Karan Home Known for her highly chic fashion design, Donna Karan has developed a fabulous new homeware collection, which is now exclusively available at Harrods. The line is inspired by her love of travel and fascination with texture and has a distinctly urbane feel. “This new Lenox collection is a balance of modernity and soul,” the creator explains.
“Every piece is an object of desire for personal use or entertaining at home.” While practical enough for everyday function, each item is hand-crafted and unique. There are burnished metal plates, layered glass vases, and gleaming gold-coloured bowls from Nepal as well as hand-sculpted wood accessories and stylish flatware. www.harrods.com
Embrace Upcycling Upcycling is the interiors trend of the moment, which sees pre-loved furniture and homewares transformed into stylish pieces with a new twist. Not only does the practice avoid classic items going to waste, it also harnesses a somewhat vintage charm as well as ensuring uniqueness. Beautiful boutique Judith Michael and Daughter in Primrose Hill is the perfect place to acquire upcycled items, and recent additions include reclaimed chairs upholstered with floral prints. “Paint a tired 1990s pine dressing table pale grey or milk white for French shabbychic appeal in the bedroom,” says owner Gillian Anderson-Price. “Or you could liberate your mother’s 1970s sideboard with bold green paint and panel the doors in geometric wallpaper.”
Twist on a Classic Fleming & Howland have updated their classic leather designs with a brand new colour palette for Spring/ Summer. The family-run business has excelled at fine craftsmanship since its origins in 1780 and continues to produce hand-crafted chairs from high quality British cow hide. The new shades include a refreshing powder blue and rose, yet all retain a gorgeous antique finish. www.chesterfields1780.com

designer focus Marcel Wanders Marcel Wanders is celebrated for his interior design projects, lighting, electronics and now luxurious flatware, says Gabrielle Lane
T
he artistic mediums of Marcel Wanders are as eclectic as his extravagant and poetic creations. Since graduating from the School of Arts Arnhem in 1988, Wanders has produced everything from porcelain vases to full scale interior design projects. Each time he has managed to enthrall, using interesting techniques, bold prints and quirky shapes which have led critics to declare his work both theatrical and brilliant. His excellence clearly demonstrates why Wanders was chosen to edit the 2005 Design Yearbook as well as perform as a juror for prestigious industry awards including the Rotterdam Design Prize. However, art lovers will recognise his pieces from international exhibitions at the V&A museum and other venues. To fully appreciate the artistic vision of Wanders, one must stay at one of Amsterdam’s Lute Suites. Dotted throughout the city, 18th century cottages have been transformed into glamorous yet comfortable retreats. Previously Marcel Wanders has declared the inspiration for all of his work to be the city of Milan and he has widely referred to the place as the ‘cradle of design’. “It is a place where designers feel there is a future and the world awaits their talents, a place where history is written,” he says. However, this year he has partnered with luxury French silversmiths Christofle to create a beautiful range of flatware. Entitled, ‘Garden of Eden’, the idea was to produce elaborate silver pieces which appear precious and possess an almost sensual quality. Delicate patterns of engraving honour the 180 year old traditions of the brand and images of leaves, flowers and swirls adorn the back of knives, forks and spoons. “It was a pleasure to work for such a house,” explains Wanders. “I immersed myself in its history. For Garden of Eden we sat around a table and pondered calmly; the work rhythm was the antithesis of today’s modern lifestyle.” The playful nature of Wanders is also evident in a range of silver accessories which he has created to coincide with the launch of his latest venture. Using the idea of the seven deadly sins, items include a magnifying glass to portray avarice, an ashtray reflecting sloth, and a carriage-clock to embody envy. n www.marcelwanders.com / www.harrods.com

Get the look The Zetter Townhouse
The Zetter Townhouse is a gorgeous Georgian boutique hotel, situated just across the cobbles from its glamorous and established sister property. The interior of this new 13-bedroom venture has been designed by Russell Sage – who most recently designed the royal suite at The Goring - who has scoured the country for beautiful antiques and quirky trinkets to create a cosy and interesting space akin to the home of an eccentric great aunt. In the entertaining areas, taxidermy, handsome oak furniture, and Victorian lampshades jostle for space with framed needlepoint, reclaimed glasses and parasols! Meanwhile, upstairs each suite has been individually designed and boasts its own charm.
‘The Blue Room’
We love this space for its eclectic fusion of all things modern and traditional. A splash of bright turquoise seems the perfect background for classics like a velvet winged armchair and well-worn Persian rug. There’s also a nod to the huge interiors trend for upcycling which sees a mahogany fire screen given a yellow panel, and a fireplace lacquered in red - utterly fabulous - who knew?! Try the look at home!

Award-wining designer Luciano Giubbilei creates striking outdoor spaces that have all the charm of an English garden, says Lana Jordan
W
ith the onset of summer, many of us begin clipping, decking and equipping our outside space. Few achieve the sophistication we covet. After all, a few rose bushes do not Queen Mary’s Garden make! It is my own forlorn gardening attempts which make the wise words of Luciano Giubbilei, so encouraging. The internationally renowned designer has won numerous awards for both his domestic and commercial schemes including RHS Gold Medals for his collaborations with champagne house Laurent-Perrier. Yet he is clear that it doesn’t take unlimited funds and assistance to create something to be proud of. “Keep it simple,” he says. “Choose just a few great items which work for your budget and don’t be afraid of size as large plants can work well!” Unsurprisingly therefore, it is not only elaborate commissions which Luciano enjoys working on. Although his most recent project contains elements inspired by Italy and France across 7,000 square metres of space, Luciano approaches smaller projects with the same enthusiasm. “I really don’t mind about the size of a commission,” he says. “I am concerned simply with the arrangement of space. For me it is about atmosphere. I want to create places where people can share a good time with their family.” A practical yet attractive area for both parents and children was the brief which preceded the beautiful garden shown on this page. Designed for a beautiful property in Hampstead, Luciano and his colleagues aimed for clean lines, clipped shrubbery and a touch of character, evoked through the use of small hardwood trees, such as hornbeams. In addition, the garden was given a terrace which the clients wanted to use for outside dining. Created several years ago, these striking images are proof that a carefully considered and simple garden design is timeless. Luciano has been asked to create many similar spaces in North West London throughout his career. “Luciano has developed a unique aesthetic that makes use of nature, minerals, light, space and art in a way that has never been used before in gardens,” says one admirer of his work. In fact, Luciano’s work is so popular that a book celebrating his endeavours and citing his inspirations was published at the end of last year. ‘The Gardens of Luciano Giubbilei’ looks at a selection of his projects and includes illustrations, photographs and further advice from the man himself. n

Spa Spotlight ... Hydrodermabrasion The hydrodermabrasion treatment came highly recommended from friends with a variety of different aims. I was promised the facial would improve the appearance of fine lines, soothe blemishes and induce beneficial humidity to cleanse and tone. During the session, tiny droplets of water are fired at the skin to exfoliate the surface layer, supported by a high pressure oxygen jet which improves circulation and accordingly, radiance. Such rigorous application feels highly relaxing. REN products are then used to stimulate the skin’s healing process and minimise any existing redness, while the water is also enriched with Vitamin C, as a natural antiseptic. The administration of these products is accompanied by a beautiful head and shoulder massage. The immediate benefits of the facial were softer and brighter skin, without any discolouration or tenderness. Very impressive!

What are some of the features you’re most proud of?
The Platinum Medical Centre is obviously a striking new development, but what makes it so special? I think its USP is that we’ve brought together everything into one more efficient building, both for patients and for us. It’s a modern building, clean and friendly, that seems more like a hotel than a hospital, which was exactly our aim. In addition, it’s an outpatient facility, which means we

It means we never have queues

The new LOC area at the Platinum Medical Centre replicates their original facilities at 95-97 Harley Street; mirroring their successful patient orientated building design and proven clinical protocols, which have been so highly revered. The service will include a team of experienced oncologists and oncology surgeons, specialist nursing staff, a dedicated oncology pharmacy and a 10-bedded chemotherapy suite. The most up-to-date cancer specific imaging will be available at the centre, including low dose PET CT scanning, which is essential for accurate and rapid results. As the PMC will provide a full oncology service, this means that cancer patients, who previously had to travel to other locations for their treatment, now have access to all the care they need under one roof. Cancers of all types are treated at the PMC, however, the new centre specialises in gastrointestinal cancers, together with liver cancer, head and neck cancers and gynaecological cancers; alongside a new breast care service.

and people feel immediately at ease. We’ve also centralised our entire computer system, meaning when you check in downstairs, the clinic you’re going to is already waiting for and expecting you. These kinds of details make all the difference.
Your cancer provision here is clearly exemplary, what are some of the key aspects that patients will benefit from? First of all it’s the first time in 19 years we’ve brought cancer care back to NW London, and had it all in one building. In addition, the technology here that we have is state of the art, some of the most effective and advanced in the country. Some of our machines, for instance, reduce dosage times from 45 minutes to 12 minutes. New therapies are about faster times and lower dose, and it is great for our patients. The key aspect of what we’re offering here is cutting edge technology in a clean, modern space that’s completely focused towards the patients.
What effect will the Platinum Centre have on The Wellington Hospital as whole? We’ve created a lot more space for the North and South buildings, not only have we increased our overall capacity by a third, but we have moved from having 20 consulting rooms to 50 consulting rooms. The impact of that on our patients is incredible. Because we were able to purpose design this space, we’ve had time now to focus on light and space, create an open, calming, normal environment.
Originally commissioned by the British and Commonwealth Shipping Group – The Wellington Hospital South opened in April 1974. It had just 98 rooms and three operating theatres - on average patients were expected to stay eight to 14 days - how medicine has changed! Dr Arthur Levin, The Wellington Hospital’s founder and first medical director, had a vision of a first-class hospital, which incorporated the best medical and nursing care – alongside accommodation and service normally associated with a luxury hotel. With the success of the first hospital behind it, 1982 saw the opening of the hospital’s twin – the North Tower built on Circus Road. Architect Frederick Woodhead, who designed both the North and South Wellington towers – championed such things as ‘sense sensitive’ design; developing a place for patients – not just consultants and nursing staff. With patients foremost in mind, both hospitals were built in the shape of a ziggurat, allowing each patient room to capture the maximum amount of natural light. Many local residents may connect the hospital with fond memories, in particular the birth of their children. Until the early 90’s babies where delivered in the North tower, some of those in the renowned Special Care Baby Unit. In 2007 the hospital expanded again, opening its satellite centre in Golders Green - The Wellington Diagnostics and Outpatients Centre. The Platinum Medical Centre which opened on 3 May is The Wellington’s latest venture. Today, The Wellington Hospital is the largest private hospital in the UK, with a global reputation for excellence. Much has developed within the hospital, which now comprises 266 beds, 15 operating theatres, 50 consulting rooms and some of the most up-to-date technology available in the UK.

ALFA STUNS GENEVA
I Matthew Carter went to the 81st Geneva International Motor Show and, for him, it was Alfa Romeo that stood out from the pack
t’s been a long time coming, but Alfa Romeo has finally remembered how to make a rear-wheel drive car. The Alfa 4C was, without a doubt, the highlight of a Geneva Motor Show packed with new cars. It’s a stunner. Officially it’s only a concept, but Alfa has confirmed that the 4C will make it into production next year. With styling reminiscent of the glorious 8C (hence the name), the smaller 4C is a mid-engined, rear-wheel-driven, two-seater that’s set to rival the Porsche Cayman. A price of between £40,000 and £50,000 has been mooted. Thanks to extensive use of carbon fibre, the
4C will have a promised kerb weight of under 850 kilograms. That, in turn, means it doesn’t need a huge engine to push it along. Power is provided by the 1.7-litre turbo-charged direct injection petrol engine currently found in the Giulietta 1750 TBi Cloverleaf, and Alfa suggests that a top speed of more than 155 mph is on the cards, with 0–60 mph in under five seconds. The only bad news? Alfa is unlikely to manufacture more than 5,000 4Cs a year and, with its arrival coinciding with Alfa’s return to the States, most will go there. There won’t be many in the UK showrooms. Better get your order in now. n

Fly like an eagle Hand a tired, moth-eaten, old E-type Jaguar over to the experts at Eagle and what do you get? A completely re-engineered car that’s much better than it was when new. It’s not cheap, says Matthew Carter, but if you want the best…
T
ucked away in a sleepy corner of Sussex is a series of barns and outbuildings that once formed part of a farm. These days, they house not cows or sheep, but Eagles – Eagles that soar like no others. If there’s one car that represents the best of British, the E-type Jaguar is it. When it was launched 50 years ago, barely believable, the E-type changed the rules. With its bonnet stretching out into the next county, the E-type was the original manhood-extension. Here was a machine capable of 150 mph, one that looked simply stunning whether standing still or flying, and yet which cost far less than a contemporary Ferrari or Aston Martin. Never mind that those first cars were ‘helped’ on their way to that remarkable top speed with engine parts from the Le Mans-winning D-type and, by wearing racing tyres, the E-type was far ahead of anything else on the road. Five decades later, the E-type, or rather the Eagle E-type, is still ahead of the game. Eagle has been working with E-types for almost 30 years, although the phrase “working with” does them a disservice. Over that time, Eagle has
reinvented the icon, turning it into a thoroughly modern sports car, building by hand what it calls ‘zero mileage’ E-types. Using a knackered E-type as a donor car, Eagle reclaims and refurbishes the parts that still work and remanufactures those that don’t. Invariably the body, ravaged by corrosion gathered over more than four decades of use and abuse, is thrown away and a new one created using panels stamped out by the original presses, a process that takes around 1,000 manhours. The exceptions to that rule are cars sourced from California. These are usually in far better shape than anything that’s spent its life on our sodden shores, and as much original metal as possible is saved. The body, whether new or restored, is meticulously painted and rust-proofed before the car is rebuilt by hand, using as much from the original as possible. And here is where it gets really interesting. While there’s no doubting that the E-type was exceptionally fast for its day, things have moved on over the past 50 years. In fact, an original E-type won’t handle, stop or go as well as a modern day Golf GTi. But help is at
motoring
hand. Over the years, Eagle has developed a whole host of upgrades for the car, with the express intention of bringing it up to date mechanically, while still keeping its timeless looks and appeal. There are a number of improvements deemed essential for any E-type, such as better cooling for the engine, stronger engine mounts specially developed for the car by Eagle and discreet electric power steering. But in effect, the sky is the limit. “It’s up to owners how far they want to go, but we can – and have – built E-types that superficially look just as they did when they came off the production line at Jaguar, but which have completely upgraded suspension, brakes, wheels, steering, back axles, five-speed gearbox, engine... you name it,” says Eagle’s Paul Brace. One of the most significant changes Eagle can make is to take the iconic 4.2 litre ‘XK’ engine out and replace it with 4.7 litres; while power remains at around the 300hp mark, the engine’s torque – its pulling power – is massively increased. It makes the car far more tractable in everyday traffic, without compromising its ability to thrill when conditions allow. Best of all, the changes are not obvious, unless you opt to have your new engine fuel-injected, in which case you’ll lose those three iconic SU carburettors. Wherever possible, though, the car looks standard: it’s just that, within original casings, you’ll often find modern parts – the wiper motor, the fuel pump and even the radio. But you’ll look in vain for electric windows. “Sorry, but that would mean losing the chrome window winders and the interior just wouldn’t look right without them,” says Brace. Creating an Eagle E-type from a rusting hulk isn’t the work of a moment. Eagle estimates each car takes 18 months from start to finish, going some way to explaining the price, which varies depending on the final specification. But you won’t go far wrong if you budget upwards of £300,000 – rather more than its 1961 asking price of £2,200. If that’s too much, then Eagle has a selection of original roadsters and coupés for sale, with the soft tops commanding higher prices than the hardtops. Whether you want an early Series 1, a more practical Series 2 or V12 Series 3, a coupé or a roadster, Eagle will more than likely have the car you want
calibre
in stock, often with a low mileage and a story to tell. Again you can buy cheaper, but Eagle spends more than 300 hours and thousands of pounds on new parts in each car it sells, making sure it’s among the very best. Among satisfied customers is former Grand Prix driver Martin Brundle, who owns a red V12 Series 3 Roadster, sourced by Eagle. He then specified an Eagle Sport upgrade package to ensure the car would be happy in modern traffic. “I wanted a car I could trust on long journeys, not just for a Sunday morning cruise.” He liked the car so much it’s now for sale (it’s yours for £135,000), but only because he has ordered another one, this time a bespoke Eagle E-type. But Eagle can go even further. The company is currently building two very special E-types: a stunning Speedster and a lightweight GT Coupé, both with bespoke aluminium bodies. The Speedster has been designed with California in mind – there’s no hood – while the low drag GT Coupé should be the ultimate Grand Tourer. Best of British? Without question. n

Regatta Royal Now in its 172nd year, the Henley Royal Regatta has a reputation as one of the best in the world. As much as a sporting occasion as a social event, the regatta is attended by competitors and spectators from across the globe. E
very year at the end of June, people are inspired to dig out their tents, invest in a couple of disposable barbecues and sleep rough on the streets of SW19. Why? Because it’s Wimbledon - the world’s most historic and glamorous tennis tournament which offers fans the chance to laze in the sunshine on Henman Hill (or sit in a prized seat on the hallowed Centre Court if you’re lucky enough to get a ticket) with a glass of Pimms and, of course, strawberries and cream, while watching the sport’s greats wield their magic with a tennis racket. “I think it’s the history that’s behind Wimbledon that makes it so special,” says Annabel Croft, former British number one. “It’s a very individual event, quintessentially British and very different to the other grand slams. Everything is immaculate, from the flower pots to the way they prepare the grass courts. And a lot of players on the tour grow up watching Wimbledon and have been inspired by the tournament.” Roger Federer, a six-time Wimbledon champion, has played some of his greatest tennis on the fine turf of the All England Club, but in the last two years, his powers have started to wane and a new challenger, in the form of Rafael Nadal, has taken the reigns of world leader with his aggressive, never-say-die approach to the sport. This year, though, another rival has thrown himself into the mix ahead of the only grass court Grand Slam of the season. Serbian Novak Djokovic, renowned for comedic impressions of his fellow players, has ditched his nickname of ‘nearly man’ and stepped into the upper echelon of the sport. “He’s won six titles this season already,” says Croft. “And they’re big titles too, including his second Australian Open title and three Masters titles. He beat Nadal for the first time on clay, the Spaniard’s favourite surface, to win the Madrid Masters and is playing like he’s the world number one. There’s a great rivalry developing between them and along with Federer, I think these three are the ones to watch at Wimbledon.” One man who’s omitted from Croft’s prediction is our very own Andy Murray. From the dizzying heights of the Australian Open final earlier this year, the Scot has since struggled and looks worryingly short of confidence ahead of his home Grand Slam. “He needs to be more consistent,” says Croft. “Last year was an up and down year for him then he finally got it together. This year, he’s not played much and that doesn’t bode well for Wimbledon because it’s not just a case of flicking a switch to play well. Hopefully he’ll be able
It’s a very individual event, quintessentially British and very different to the other grand slams
calibre
to find some inspiration but it’ll depend on the draw. If it’s kind to him, he can use the early rounds to build up some consistency and find his range so he’s ready for the likes of Nadal and Djokovic in the later rounds. It would be a nightmare if he got a danger man early on.” Murray has reached three Grand Slam finals now, but failed to win a single set. What does Croft think is holding him back? “I think it’s a case of the individual themselves finding the form from within. Tennis is such a mental sport and only Murray can know what it takes to make it to the next level. No one else can really help him make that step. In the past, he’s been quite an angry player on court and that’s come back to haunt him. Also, he’s such a perfectionist and struggles to find his top level if everything isn’t working well. Instead of tipping the monopoly board when things go badly, he needs to find another way to beat the top players and grind out a win.” While Croft thinks the men’s game is enjoying its most exciting era in recent memory because, “there are lots of matches where the standard is so high, you don’t know who will win,” the women’s game isn’t in such an assured position. The former British number one believes that with the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, both struggling with injuries, reigning US Open and Australian Open champion Kim Clijsters also on the side-lines and a world number one in Caroline Wozniacki who has yet to even win a Grand Slam, the game is in a difficult place. That said, Croft admits that it’s still exciting for the fans because Wimbledon “will be wide open for a new name to come in and shock”. On the British front, the women have struggled to mount a challenge and replicate Virginia Wade’s sensational run to victory in the 1977 tournament, with our leading players Elena Baltacha and Anne Keathovong currently ranked 82 and 107 respectively. “I’m a big fan of Baltacha,” says Croft. “She’s got a big heart and tries 150 per cent every time she steps out on court. She’s worked so hard to get where she is and has every chance of putting on a run at Wimbledon. Having played at Wimbledon, I know how you can suffer nerves because of the weight of expectation and that’s the same for all the British girls. It’s never easy to play there because you want to do so well in front of your home fans.” While Baltacha and Keathovong are coming closer to the end of their careers, Croft believes two futures stars, in the forms of Laura Robson and Heather Watson, have every chance of taking British women’s tennis into the future. “Robson probably hasn’t pushed on as the hype predicted but she’s got real talent and flair and has the potential to do very well. Then there’s Watson who’s a joy to watch. She’s a real battler on court and while she’s quite petite compared to most of the other girls on tour, she’s a great mover and is great on the counter.” While hopes of British success may be lower than usual this year at Wimbledon, a titanic tussle between three of the best players the men’s game has ever seen, a wide open draw on the women’s side and the likelihood of great weather for the two-week tournament, there’s every chance it could be another vintage fortnight at SW19. n

tepping off the plane at Shanghai airport, I realised that – beyond some slightly confused ideas about Chairman Mao, the Beijing Olympics and chicken chow mein – I really had no idea what to expect from China. A never-ending flurry of books and articles about the country have appeared in recent years, as pundits and commentators in the West try to figure out just where the nation is heading – and what its future might mean for the rest of us. But what would I actually encounter here as a first-time tourist? High-tech, fast-paced cities, choked with dust and teeming with people? Or the sort of tranquil countryside familiar from Chinese ink paintings, all mistshrouded mountains and peaceful imperial gardens? My first stop was the city of Guilin in southern China, a couple of hours from Shanghai by plane. The region is a UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for its karst landscape – hundreds of bizarrely shaped limestone peaks that are best appreciated by taking a gentle river cruise along the meandering Li River. Our journey wound up in the busy tourist town of Yangshou, where the golden arches of a McDonalds in the town centre were oddly framed by the dramatic forested peaks and green paddy fields in the distance. An unmissable highlight was the ‘impression’ of Liu San Jie, a spectacular night-time extravaganza of light, dance and
theatre that uses the floodlit Li River, with its breathtaking karst backdrop, as its stage. The show was created by Zhang Yimou, director of both House of Flying Daggers and the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony, and includes 500 local performers. As the actors glide, dance and float across the river, you have a disconcerting impression that Yimou may have discovered the secret of walking on water. Travelling onwards by plane, we reached Hangzhou, a city described by Marco Polo in the 13th century as “beyond dispute the finest and noblest in the world”. Today, it’s China’s 11th city and home to some 6 million people. We passed mile upon mile of enormous, half-built villas: many-storied, candy-coloured buildings, adorned with pale pink turrets and blue balconies. These eclectic hybrids of eastern and western architecture belonged to the newly rich local farmers, as explained by our guide. This, then, was the new China, being built before our eyes. As we approached the city, the central business district loomed up, a dazzling mass of glass and steel – yet more evidence of China’s prosperity. Nevertheless, the heart of the city is still the beautiful West Lake, an inspiration to artists and writers for centuries. Our lakeside Shangri-La hotel provided an excellent base for exploring the countryside around Hangzhou, including its tea plantations. As someone who frequently drinks a good
travel
ten cups of tea a day, I thought I knew all there was to know about tea, but how wrong I was: Chinese green tea knocks the spots off PG Tips. At the nearby Dragon Well Tea Estate, our guide explained how the best leaves are gathered in the spring harvest, then sorted and dried by sifting them around in an incredibly hot basin with bare hands. It takes years (and no doubt numerous injuries) to train in the art, and today, fewer and fewer young people are willing to become tea-drying apprentices. Next stop was Wuhzen, a historic water town. It was a charming place, full of battered houses and higgledy-piggledy buildings – as well as thousands of tourists from different parts of Asia, pouring through streets that looked as if they might burst at the seams. In an old house, a shadow-puppet theatre had been set up; in the square, a traditional opera was taking place; in a brewery, potent Chinese rice wine was fermenting. It was fascinating, yet it was hard not to feel that it had all been put on for the tourists. A few years ago, we were told, the place had been falling apart – but then the authorities cottoned on to the enormous tourism potential. Soon, surrounding towns would undergo similar transformations. Was it still possible to encounter the ‘real’ China without straying too far off the tourist trail? The next day, we asked our guide to take us somewhere
connoisseur
quieter. The village he took us to was nestled among beautiful hills and felt much sleepier than Wuhzen. Elaborately engraved doorways led into dark courtyards, and here and there, we saw damaged wall carvings, lingering reminders of the destruction wreaked in the Cultural Revolution. It was a fascinating place. We saw our next destination long before we reached it: the Yellow Mountains, the stunning 72-peak mountain range famous from Chinese ink paintings. A cable car takes tourists up to the top, where it’s possible to stay overnight in a hotel. This is highly recommended, as you can wake up before dawn (which may sound tough, but believe me – you’ll kick yourself if you miss it) to watch the spectacular sunrise and look out for monkeys playing on distant peaks in the early morning light. After the tranquillity of the village and the natural beauty of the Yellow Mountains, our final destination couldn’t have been more of a shock to the system: Shanghai, home to a jawdropping 19 million people. We arrived at the five-star Pudong Shangri-La hotel at 1am and, although I was exhausted, I was much too excited to sleep as I gazed out of the full-length windows of my 30th floor room. Below me lay the Huangpu River, lit up in neon, while above me, enormous skyscrapers stretched into the night sky, all blazing with lights. It seemed almost impossible that just that morning I’d woken up to see the sunrise over the silent Yellow Mountains. We spent the following day zipping around the city, shopping and climbing the Shanghai World Financial Center, the third highest building in the world. After an action-packed day in the city, it was great to get back and be treated to a “jade journey experience” in the hotel’s spa – a delicious bubble bath and an incredibly relaxing massage, along with a restorative cup of green tea. At the end of an amazing trip, I felt no closer to understanding China, a country of enormous contrasts. There were the tranquil villages, where children and water buffalo splashed about in the river, and then the dazzling skyscrapers of Shanghai. There was the urban sprawl of Hangzhou and the breathtaking views of the Yellow Mountains. And everywhere, it seemed, China was in flux – from the fabulous new hotel in Guilin, built in anticipation of the coming boom, to the highspeed rail link between Beijing and Shanghai, due to open in June this year, to the rapid rebranding of Zhejiang Province’s ancient villages as tourist attractions. If ever there was an ideal time to visit this astonishingly varied country, surely it must be now – before so much of it changes forever. n Cox and Kings organises luxury escorted and tailor-made trips to China; see www.coxandkings.co.uk for details. The Grape escape Emma Mills visits country wine retreat The Vineyard at Stockcross to try out some of the best Californian vintages, and finds out that the proof is definitely in the drinking
T
he Vineyard at Stockcross is a unique and marvellous beast; part hotel, part spa, part wine school, part gastronomic country escape, it exudes charm and class, and boasts a barely-noticeable hour commute from central London. We head down there for a weekend away on a boiling Friday afternoon in late May, and after checking into our generous modern suite, which looks out over the large outdoor terrace, potter down to the waterside tables to enjoy a welcome glass of wine amid the quiet peace of this impressive hotel. We’re here for one of the hotel’s special wine evenings, tasting
a selection of Californian wine accompanied by the hotel’s director of wine, James Hocking, and a seven course feast cooked to match the wine by renowned Michelin-starred chef Daniel Galmiche, who came to The Vineyard from the fivestar Forbury Hotel in Reading. Opened in March 1998, the hotel - which is owned by founder and chairman of Classic FM turned successful Californian wine producer Sir Peter Michael - was created around a 19th century hunting lodge, and was extensively renovated before its opening as a luxury hotel and famous gastronomic destination. Modern additions to the building have been done
tastefully and remain as in keeping with the old building as possible. Slatted shutters and creeping vines conjure images of a French chateau, while the well-stocked wine cellars, holding over 2,000 wines in total, both new and old world, are vast and impressive. Naturally, The Vineyard specialises in Californian wine, and its unique selection of over 800 wines is unparalleled in the UK, with many bottles coming from over 30 small family-owned estates, including those of the Peter Michael Winery. Our tasting evening starts with a champagne reception in their glamorous private function suite. Wines in striking carafes are dotted

The wine is buttery, rich and vibrant, and served with foie gras is an absolute revelation, everyone at the table is clearly impressed throughout the room for us to peruse, while we enjoy a glass of Schramsberg Blanc de Blanc, Calistoga from the Napa Valley with canapés of smoked salmon, pate, arancini and cheese puffs.

T
Hew Blair, chairman and buying director of wine merchants Justerini & Brooks, offers his advice on wines for summer drinking, and how to best enjoy them
his recent spell of fantastic weather has had us all digging out the garden furniture, reaching for the picnic basket and polishing up the ice buckets. More importantly it has meant a welcome change in diet and a focus on wines for summertime drinking. A glass of something sparkling is just the ticket in the summer, and I love this fizz from winemaker extraordinaire, Jacky Blot’s Triple Zero Montlouis, Domaine de Taille aux Loups (£13.17 per bottle). Made in the Loire Valley from Chenin Blanc this is bone dry and perfect with seafood, fish, salted nuts and various other appetisers. La Morandina also produce a stunning Moscato d’Asti 2010 (£12.17 per bottle) this is light, low in alcohol with an elegant sweetness, serve with summer fruits, light jellies or sorbets. A vast number of white wines will suit summer drinking, in general look out for those which are light, youthful, crisp and refreshing rather than buttery or rich in texture. Sauvignon blanc remains ever popular and my current favourites include Pencarrow from New Zealand 2010 (£7.77 per bottle) which has bundles of cut-grass and tropical fruit with a crisp acidity. Sancerre is classic with its crisp citrus, herbaceous and slight flinty mineral character. Pick the best growers, such as Lucien Crochet’s 2008 (£13.17 per bottle), spending a little more will give you a wine with more character rather then something flimsy and dilute as can happen at the lower end from this region. Riesling, another aromatic grape variety, works well. The wines can stand up to more weight and spice, try Riesling Cuvée Théo from Domaine Weinbach 2008 (£21.72 per bottle) with scallops, oysters or any seafood, or the off-dry Braunberger Riesling Kabinett from Fritz Haag 2008 which is bottled under screwcap (£12.17 per bottle) with Thai, Japanese or other Asian cuisine. A big favourite this summer is the ever popular Domaine Montrose Rosé 2009 en magnum, (£14.34 per magnum). Conjuring summer fruits in a glass, this versatile wine can be enjoyed on its own and with a range of light foods. Or try a lighter red chilled slightly; Domaine des Roches Bleues produce a fantastic 2008 Côte de Brouilly (one of the ten Beaujolais crus) (£10.67 per bottle) from Gamay that is elegant, textured and very approachable with light meats and fish. And finally, fortified wines, such as port, are not just for Christmas, and can be drunk in the summer to round off a perfect meal. Look for Tawny ports, and serve them chilled. Taylor’s 20 Year Old (£37.89 per bottle) is a perfect treat, served with puddings, nuts and cheese. n www.justerinis.com

Great Scott Marcus Wareing’s new hotel venture, The Gilbert Scott, in the much lauded St Pancras Renaissance is a proudly British affair, says Emma Mills
I
sometimes wonder if I’ve been a bit spoilt by the wealth of different cuisines we have access to in London Vietnamese, Italian, Indian, Russian, French, Mongolian, Japanese, Spanish, Polish, Australian, Mexican, Nepalese...the list goes on and on. Eating British food isn’t something I do a lot, in fact it’s rare I’ll sit down to a roast, or a shepherd’s pie. So perhaps that is the reason I felt rather stumped initially by the strictly old school British menu at Marcus Wareing’s The Gilbert Scott restaurant; though I needn’t have been. The nostalgic and almost whimsical menu features dishes long forgotten in the annals of history – tweed kettle, Harrogate loaf, mulligatawny, Dorset jugged steak, soles in coffins, pease pudding, Mrs Beeton’s snow eggs and Eccles cakes. A veritable hymn to the days of yore, reading this menu is a delight in itself – we giggled over the old-fashioned names, pondered what bacon olives might be, reminisced about Eccles cakes – in short we had fun. When did it stop being fun to read a menu?
We decided on Queen Anne’s artichoke tart and those mysterious bacon olives for our starters. Bacon olives turned out to be sausages with a bacon casing, cut into medallions, served with a fennel and endive salad – hearty, tasty and jolly British. The artichoke tart was subtle and light, and expertly cooked.
This most British of restaurants is really perfectly pitched Main courses were Kentish pigeon in a pot – more hearty local fare, beautifully cooked – and Soles in Coffins, which was actually a sole fillet with vermouth cream, Morecambe bay shrimps, mace and crispy potato. This was fishy, tender and delicious. To go with this we had pease pudding mashed peas with bacon – so delicious it left us wondering why it ever disappeared from menus. For pudding – in case we weren’t feeling patriotic enough - we were completely seduced by the custard tart from Wareing’s own recipe that
he cooked for the Queen’s 80th birthday, served with homemade rhubarb icecream. This custard tart is the reason British puddings have the reputation they do, indulgently simple and completely delicious, there wasn’t a crumb left on the plate when we’d finished with it. So, the verdict? Well, I should mention that having dined at Wareing’s Berkley Hotel venue a couple of years ago and loved it, we were expecting great things from The Gilbert Scott. And it certainly delivered on food – interesting, unique dishes backed up by superlative knowledge. Wine is good too, bottles start at £35 and the selection is modest, but well-chosen. Atmosphere, decor and service were nice, if a bit canteeny, but it worked - this is after all, in effect, a station restaurant. And so, in the place where trains arrive daily from all over Europe, and shuttles bring tourists via Heathrow from even further afield, this most British of restaurants, this great British brasserie no less, is really perfectly pitched. n www.thegilbertscott.co.uk

LUXURY ASPECT Gabrielle Lane talks to developer Paul Goldstein about his stunning development of luxurious homes on Telegraph Hill in Hampstead
“I
want them to live like a king!” Telegraph Hill developer Paul Goldstein says. The serial entrepreneur is referring to the residents of his latest property development. Having made the transition from financial backer to scheme manager with Hampstead’s ‘Horizons’ complex in 2004, Goldstein’s latest project is that of four high specification homes set within a gated community in the same area. Entitled Telegraph Hill, the homes will officially launch in the autumn of this year. Goldstein openly refuses to compromise on details and puts great emphasis on the location of any new homes. Accordingly, Telegraph Hill sees the four properties set in an elevated position close to the Heath. Each will be positioned above individual driveways with privacy assured by a landscaped, tree-lined embankment. From the outside, the houses appear large and attractive and retain their original 1930s style façade. However, this project is not merely about space but a luxurious and convenient lifestyle. “Everyone deserves to move into a perfect house,” asserts Goldstein. “People want their homes to feel personal to them. Developers need to think about how and why guests come to visit, and things like playrooms for children.” While each property has between five and seven
bedrooms and off-street parking for two cars, they also incorporate an exciting array of extra features. Firstly, all benefit from plush cinema lounges, which are cosy and stylish spaces, oriented around the latest electronic systems. It is envisaged that these suites will be great venues for family entertainment and for this reason in two of the homes these areas are also accompanied by an additional recreational room as well as impressive leisure facilities. Those looking to relax will enjoy the steam room, while their active counterparts can take a dip in a beautiful indoor swimming pool. “I always want to provide a chill-out area,” explains Paul. “It’s really important.” The properties have also satisfied all conceivable practical considerations. In light of their arrangement over three or four storeys, utility rooms have been placed on the first floor, the area where most laundry is usually generated, while heating and ventilation can be controlled centrally. An ambient lighting system is installed throughout, courtesy of specialists Lutron, and extra touches including a piped music system and under floor heating in the bathrooms make the homes feel welcoming and luxurious. The décor throughout is neutral yet contemporary and residents can expect appliances to be the highest
homes & property
specification owing to their design by Miele and other leading brands. Outside, Goldstein has continued to infuse the plans with a healthy dose of common sense and attention to detail. “Our garages have enough space to comfortbaly accommodate a car with the doors open, while the gardens are of course south facing, so they benefit from warmer weather during peak times of the day,” explains Paul. The greenery itself has been designed by Randle Siddeley to ensure that they are the appropriate accompaniment to such grand residences. Barbecues are fitted as standard and three of the four homes come equipped with a gorgeous summer house. Although the private road ensures security, during the daytime a porterage service is provided. This operates alongside 24/7 CCTV and video entry phone systems. Paul was inspired to become more involved in property development following the creation of his own elaborate chalet in Val d’Isere. However he does stress that although Telegraph Hill reflects his own experience, the properties are always created to best meet the owners’ requirements. It is this approach which has seen previous projects achieve huge success. Horizons boasts premiership footballers amongst its clientele, while an apartment refurbishment project in Knightsbridge was sold within five days for a record price. In a difficult economic climate, Paul continues to invest additional capital in ensuring the high quality execution of his plans, and the stunning results of such commitment and enthusiasm are clear. n Priced from £6.95m, www.telegraph-hill.co.uk Aston Chase 020 7724 4724 TK International 020 7794 8700

I
f you are one of the many people who aspire to own a beautiful second home in a stunning Mediterranean destination then you really should be considering Croatia. Set on a hillside sloping down to the water’s edge, over 200 fully-appointed residences offer sweeping panoramic views over the Adriatic and Elafiti islands.
As one of the most comprehensive developments on the Croatian coast, Dubrovnik Sun Gardens offers a rare opportunity to purchase completed, resort-based real estate in a stunning seafront location, on the doorstep of one of the world’s most famous cities. Known as ‘The Residences at Dubrovnik Sun Gardens’, the development offers 207 professionally managed residences comprising one and two bedroom apartments. Situated in a dedicated village setting within the resort, the charming Mediterranean homes
range from 44 to 107 square metres and have either sea or courtyard views. Each unit comes with its own furnished terrace area which is the perfect place to enjoy evening aperitifs listening to the chorus of cicadas and watching the sun set over the calm sea. With a history that dates back as early as 1512, the site of Dubrovnik Sun Gardens has a storied past. In the early 16th century, Florentine statesman Piero Soderini was driven into exile by the Medici family and is reputed to have settled in the stone castle (palazzo)
homes & property
which can still be seen today in the grounds of the resort. Almost 500 years later, conflict again settled on the area when the Croatian War of Independence took hold. During this time Dubrovnik was subjected to a siege that lasted many months and the Dubrovnik Sun Gardens Resort was badly damaged, burned and looted. The luxury integrated resort as it stands today opened in July 2009 and is owned by developer Jupiter Adria. Jupiter Adria, which was founded in 2006, is the leading investor in Croatian leisure resort real estate and is developing three other golf and spa projects in the country. Unlike other real estate for sale in the area, Dubrovnik Sun Gardens affords owners the appealing benefit of having full access to a range of facilities and services right on the doorstep. Whether a family with young children, a young professional
couple or indeed retirees, Dubrovnik Sun Gardens resort ensures that it caters for every conceivable taste with a world-class spa, sports centre, 13 bars and restaurants, mature manicured gardens, a market parade of shops, three swimming pools, private beach, small marina and round the clock concierge assistance. Each of the homes has been designed in a light, contemporary style and furnishings are serene, minimalist and inherently practical. Fully equipped, open-plan kitchen and dining areas have all the necessary appliances, spacious bathrooms have rainfall showers, while living areas have comfortable sofas and 32 flat screen LCD televisions. Larger apartments offer additional en-suite bathrooms. The flooring is solid oak and there is well-designed storage throughout as well as wi-fi access in each residence and throughout the resort.
During the summer season (1 June to 15 September) owners can use their residences for five weeks, leaving the on-site management company responsible for renting out the property for the rest of the season. This therefore makes Dubrovnik Sun Gardens not only a great lifestyle purchase but also an appealing investment opportunity with the chance to reap the rewards of a strong rental yield. All residences are professionally marketed, and with the resort operating at full capacity from midJune to mid-September, the potential to generate strong revenues are high. Owners are entitled to 50 per cent of rental revenue received by the operating company. Larger two bedroom residences with premium panoramic sea views start at â‚Ź608,000. n www.dubrovniksungardens.com

State of the market SALES:
LETTINGS:
A tale of two markets
Summer lettings show signs of improving
Mark Pollack, director at Aston Chase, comments
Nik Dennis , lettings manager at Marsh &
on the current trends in the sales market
Parsons Little Venice comments on the current trends in the LETTINGs market
It has never been more evident than now that the prime residential areas in and around central London are micro markets that in no way represent the statistics that we regularly see churned out by the various lending institutions. In fact, they might as well be talking about property on the moon, as their statistics really do bear very little, if any, relevance to the niche market in which we operate. Despite the widely held view that ‘things are tough’, it is an exciting time, particularly for the super prime end of the London market. There has been a flurry of deals between £10m and £30m in recent weeks, fuelled by an acute shortage of good quality stock, strong international demand attracted by a relatively weak pound and ongoing political uncertainty in the Middle East. This almost certainly indicates that vendors can anticipate strong capital growth throughout the remainder of 2011, with a number of sales in the area recently at levels previously associated more with homes in Mayfair and Belgravia than St John’s Wood and Hampstead. The evidence lies in the number of ‘attended exchanges’ that have taken place. These are virtually instantaneous purchases where buyers pre-empt all necessary requirements and attend the vendor’s solicitors offices with their own legal team to effect immediate exchange of contracts. Another trend rarely seen since the banking collapse of 2007 is the re-emergence of ‘lock-out agreements’. These enable anxious buyers to secure a property for a limited period of time on an exclusive basis, by putting forward a nonreturnable deposit in the eventuality of non-performance. Such a suggestion would have been fanciful little over six months ago, yet the surge of overseas investment that we are now witnessing clearly demonstrates that London is the world’s most desirable residential property market for a multitude of reasons. The relative stability and potential capital growth of the market, complimented by a cosmopolitan city, makes it hardly surprising that London is where the world wants to live. As we move into the summer months, the lettings market is increasing in activity and pace, heralding good news for landlords. With overall demand for rental property rising against a limited supply, prices are set to continue to rise throughout 2011. Only recently, in Little Venice, we secured a rent increase of nearly 20 per cent on a two bed flat in Elgin Avenue compared to the price achieved by the agent that let the property last year. In the area, we’ve also seen particularly strong interest from young families looking for properties with outdoor space over the past month, particularly for two and three bedroom properties between £1000 and £1500 per week. We have also seen an increase in relocations. A number of companies from a wide variety of industry sectors, ranging from oil companies to legal and transport to media are moving their people to London - an indicator that things are looking positive in the City. Similarly, relocation agents, who were decidedly quiet during the first few months of 2011, have had a recent increase in activity and now, a third of our Little Venice tenancies are to corporate tenants. The growing appetite from City firms for top of the range properties is being contrasted to the slow and steady supply of prime properties entering the rental market – and this is forcing rents northwards. Demand for short-let accommodation has also increased with a notable trend in vendors selling their properties often being asked to complete before they have secured their new purchase, forcing them to look to the lettings market on a short-term basis before they buy again. We anticipate that rents will continue to climb in central London for the foreseeable future, with a growing number of tenants paying a premium to secure the right property. All in all, a great time to be a landlord! Marsh & Parsons, Little Venice 020 7993 3056 www.marshandparsons.co.uk
