antage welcomed in 2012 with some pretty big changes. First up – as you’ll see as you flick through our glossy pages – we’ve had something of a makeover, and we’re very excited about it. Still bringing you the best of everything NW has to offer, as well as showcasing everything you need to know about new openings, latest exhibitions and exclusive launches, we thought it was about time we updated our style with something more befitting S/S12, as it were, and tried out a new look! You’ll still find all of your favourite local pages, top tips, interviews and insider info, as well as the latest in fashion, interiors, beauty, luxury brands, food and drink, art and travel – and lots more besides! This month, to kickstart our new design, we meet music legend, husband of the decade and NW-born Seal, who talks about life, love and the importance of family. See our exclusive interview on p. 12. In our new ‘Scene’ section we take a look at the work the Howard De Walden estate is doing in Marylebone (p. 8), speak to Primrose Hill resident Pamela Shiffer about the locale (p. 20) and suggest some of the most luxurious and decadent presents to impress a loved one this Valentines (p. 16), while our Weekend feature should give you plenty to keep you occupied in the wintery days to come (p. 10). Fashion-wise we’ve got jewels and gems to impress and delight (p. 28), and an interview with style darling Elie Tahari (p. 27). Our interiors pages are filled with ideas for beautiful boudoirs (p. 36), industrial chic style (p. 40) and ways to emulate the look of divine new hotel 45 Park Lane (p. 42). While winter months have also got us thinking about sunshine escapes, and the Maldives ticks every single box in terms of luxury, solitude and year round sun, (p. 54). There’s plenty more for you to enjoy too, and, if all these changes and developments weren’t enough, I should also mention that I got married just before Christmas! But, while my name might have changed, I can guarantee that everything here stays just as Vantage, and just as fabulous, as it always was!

The Howard De Walden Estate 8

scene

The 92 acre Howard De Walden Estate, spanning the length and breadth of Marylebone has been owned and managed by the Howard de Walden family since 1870. Lauren Romano reports Extensive development during the late Victorian and Edwardian period has made Marylebone what it is today. In 1879, the fifth Duke of Portland died without an heir and the land passed to his sister, Lucy Joan Bentinck, widow of the sixth Baron Howard de Walden. In 1918, the first family Estate Company was formed to ensure the continuing prosperity of the area. More recently, the Estate’s commercial streets have been the subject of a successful regeneration initiative. In the mid-90s a third of the shops

on Marylebone High Street were either vacant or occupied by temporary charity shops when a sensitive tenant selection process instigated by the Howard de Walden Estate management paved the way for the array of interiors and fashion boutiques, grocers and cafes which have helped to create present day Marylebone’s unique and inviting urban village. This village atmosphere is enhanced by the community ethos at the heart of The Howard de Walden Estate. Sponsorship of the popular Summer Fayre and the annual Christmas lights, subsidised publication of the bi-monthly Marylebone Journal, the careful restoration of over 300 listed buildings in its portfolio and donations of over £250,000 a year to many Marylebone initiatives are just some of the ways the Estate contributes to local life in the area. n www.hdwe.co.uk

this weekend we’re…

in Marylebone enjoying lazy days and local treats

N

estled between the vibrant West End and charm of Regents Park, Marylebone village comfortably marries high-end fashion and culture with traditional crafts and community spirit. This eclectic feel lends itself perfectly to a delightful and indulgent weekend, and this is how we’re spending ours.

We’re working-out at The Third Space For an endorphin-packed introduction to a fresh winter’s weekend, we like nothing better than heading over to the Marylebone branch of The Third Space. In our latest bid to stay trim and toned we’re replacing Pilates with gyrotonic lessons, which combine elements of dance, martial arts and yoga. Gyrotonic works wonders to soothe knotted muscles and improve core strength, so do as we did and book a personal tuition session with one of the experts and receive 20 per cent off your first work-out.

enamoured by the bold costume pieces; show-stopping ensembles including tassel drop earrings in opulent gold and dramatic gunmetal cuffs and collars softened with bows top our-wish list and add instant wow to the simplest of outfits. We have a bit of an obsession with ornate glassware at the moment and the goblet-like itittala bowls currently on the shelves at Skandium have caught our eye; we think their decadent shape and bright colours would enliven any dinner party table.

We’re eating fresh fish and free range chicken One of our favourite weekend food destinations, FishWorks has its own fish counter where you can select seafood and have it cooked to order - we love the grilled South Coast scallops with garlic butter and bread crumbs – or if a quiet night in beckons, the fishmonger is on hand to fillet the cod for our comforting fish pie. For other groceries – from fruity preserves, to our cheat’s Sunday roast ingredient (free range spatchcock poussin marinated in a tangy gremolata of parsley, lemon and garlic) – we rely on Paul Rothe & Son and the Natural Kitchen respectively.

We’re revitalising at Gielly Green After all that exercise, a spot of pampering is absolutely justifiable. If like us you find your hair feels a bit lacklustre in between cuts, visit the Gielly Green boutique salon and stock-up on their award-winning hair repair mask. Highly recommended by team Vantage this potent hair elixir tames tresses and its mud, mineral and natural oil formula, infused with hints of lemongrass delivers intense nourishment to the scalp and penetrates deep into the cuticles to leave locks voluminous, silky and manageable.

We’re coveting ornate glassware at Skandium The possibilities for boutique browsing in Marylebone are endless; for the ultimate treat we head to Kabiri to admire the covetable collection of designer jewellery dripping with gems and encrusted in scatters of delicate crystals. This season we’re particularly

10

And we’re treating ourselves to a champagne at The Langham We’re enter taining our guests with bespoke cocktails Entertaining is something that as a team we’re keen to do more of this year and to create a signature tipple for our gatherings we highly recommend enrolling on a bespoke cocktail master class at Purl. After the lesson, sample the ever-evolving bar menu which features expertly made Negronis, absinthe served in silver egg cups and an intriguing liquid nitrogen martini, stirred until it reaches -50C, under the warren of low vaulted arches and intimate chandelier-lit booths. Inspired by a trip to the haberdashery treasure trove that is VV Rouleaux, and keen to show off our new-found mixology expertise, we’re planning a masquerade soiree. The exquisite selection of feathered plume masks will make effortless fancy-dress attire and we can’t wait to wear ours.

After a day pottering around town we’re winding down for a restful evening at The Langham, who currently have 20 per cent off on selected suites and offer a late 2pm checkout. A sugar pearl dusted flute of the specially created Love Potion Laurent-Perrier cocktail served at the glamorous Artesian Bar makes the perfect night cap. n

SOUL provider The life lessons of Seal, in Stephen Milton’s exclusive interview with the singer

T

he unstable phone reception between Vantage and Seal’s mobile as he powers along Tottenham Court Road is a source of grating irritation for the London native. “Hello… HELLO,” he bellows down the line, ringing the eardrums at the other end of a crystal clear connection. “This is ridiculous, I’m sorry, I can’t make out what you’re saying at all. There’s too much noise in the background. Let me hang up and I’ll call you back...” A few apprehensive moments drift by, followed by some more… and it becomes clear the ‘Kiss from a Rose’ star has decided to call it quits on this briefest of brief exchanges. That is, until the good fellow comes through 35 minutes later. “Apologies,” he cries, “there was so much commotion in the car - it was better to wait until I got to the studios to call you back.” The 48-year-old, otherwise known as Mr Heidi Klum, is kicking back in an ITV dressing room during a transitory (and rare) lull in his schedule. What awaits is an appearance with the ladies on the Loose Women coffee table, but so laid back is the singer/songwriter, model and social campaigner, he’s happy to chat about the things that wouldn’t necessary filter through onto daytime TV. Anyway, isn’t he nervous about the task in hand - an inquisition by a quartet of rather inquisitive inquisitors? “Nah,” he chuckles. “I’ll just sing them a couple of bars of Kiss from a Rose. They’ll be putty in my hands after that!” The aforementioned ballad, an unfathomable 17 years on, still offers an enduring soundtrack for romancing couples the world over, and punctuates one of a series of high points in the musical career of Seal Henry Olusegun Olumide Adeola Samuel, the Kilburn-born performer, who first found fame collaborating with producer Adamski for chart-topping anthem Killer. Success swooped in and carried the singer, of Nigerian and Brazilian parentage, to international acclaim. Eight albums later, his most recent release Soul 2 – a collection of classic soul covers – sees him mix continued UK success with lasting appeal in the Asian, Australian and US markets. But it’s his seven-year union to German supermodel Heidi Klum – and what seems like an unending chain of tales of amour and ardour – that has really kept the singer in the headlines, a fact he’s more than aware of. “It does get tiresome when you’re doing an interview and all they want to talk about is your marriage,” he sighs. “Of course I’ll happily talk about Heidi and the kids - they’re my life, my reason to be, but, you know, it’s just a bit much.” An awkward beat of silence pangs between Vantage and the star. “You’re going to ask me about my marriage now, aren’t you?” he asks, with a wearisome chuckle. In our defence, the conversation piece is a little difficult to avoid when the couple are regularly touted “the most romantic union

more romantic than that

in Hollywood.” From the igloo proposal atop a glacier in British Colombia to the yearly vow renewals on the beach at Mexico’s Costa Careyes, the duo know how to make a statement. But was he always such a creature of romance? “You might have to ask my wife that,” he jokes. “I don’t know if I’ve always been a romantic. I imagine it’s about being with the right person and celebrating that, and Heidi is that person for me. The fact that we renew our vows every year - I guess it doesn’t get more romantic than that. I love doing it though; it keeps us focused, keeps us laughing, and helps us to remember why we’re together. Romance is a beautiful part of life, I couldn’t live without it. In saying that, Heidi is far more romantic than me. I’m just good for really big gestures.” The starry pair enjoy a bi-coastal existence, ferrying their brood of four [eight-year-old Leni, from Klum’s relationship with F1 boss Flavio Briatore, Henry, seven, Johan, five, and two-year-old Lou Sulola] between their Manhattan and LA addresses. Their six-bedroom, 6,800sq ft Beverly Hills mansion however, is considered home. “LA’s where Heidi and I are raising the children primarily, as it just makes sense in terms of our work. I’ve been there for many years now the weather and the quality of life suits us better.” So no mooted move back to the familiar surrounds of north-west London in the near future then? “Sometimes I do toy with the idea of moving back to England but if I did that I don’t know if I could hack the capital. It’s obviously an amazing city, but the pace would be too fast for me and my family. There’s the congestion, the pollution, and a non-stop pace of life. I know I live in LA, and it’s hardly an environmental utopia but, for now, I guess it wins.” It’s refreshing that his reluctance to move back doesn’t have anything to do with some testing formative years, which were marred with disturbing upheaval. Fostered from birth by a family in Essex, he was returned to his natural mother at four. Two years later, she became ill so Seal was sent to live with his father, Francis, in Kilburn, who the singer claims abused him on a number of occasions. At the same time, he was also diagnosed with the autoimmune condition Lupus, which left a lasting mark on the singer’s face and neck. To escape, he took to singing in the numerous pubs in the area. “I remember drinking and singing Irish songs in the Falcon Pub on Kilburn Lane, getting kicked out at 1am, delivering Christy Moore and The Dubliners choruses on the short walk home. I was way too young to be there, but I loved the music, the energy, and 100 per cent I admit it had a huge influence on my career. Kilburn was a hard place back then, but I still get such a nostalgic feeling when I go back there. It feels like another lifetime, but my lifetime.” So has such an unsettled upbringing influenced his desire to be the best father he can possibly be for his own children? “Absolutely! I want nothing more than to always be there for my wife and children. Nothing can or will ever step in the way of that, and my own experiences have played on that. I’m not saying I had a terrible childhood, but it wasn’t the easiest and I wouldn’t want my own kids going through what I did. “To be permanently separated from my family would be the epitome of misery for me, because they’re the funniest, warmest people you could ever know, and I feel pretty happy with my lot.” n

address book Pamela Shiffer When talking to the residents and visitors of Primrose Hill, one name regularly pops up in the form of glowing recommendations. Pamela Shiffer – stylist, buyer and Regents Park Road boutique owner, travels the world in search of beautiful fashion, be it luxury silk pieces from Brazil, or stylish separates from Spanish label Hoss Intropia. Her expertise is regularly sought by magazines including Womenswear Buyer and can be witnessed in store and online at www.pamelashiffer.com. We met up with her at Cachao in NW1, to hear about her favourite local destinations.

BEAUTY

It’s very flattering that the boutique has been shortlisted for many awards and listed among the 50 Best Independent Boutiques in Drapers magazine. I’m always looking for interesting new pieces and the whole point is that people can shop here and be sure to find something that not everyone else will have. Recently I’ve been to Fashion Week in South Korea. There’s a real explosion in creative talent over there at the moment, as well as in South America. Pamela Shiffer, 75 Regents Park Road NW1 8UY

EATING OUT BREAKFAST I like going to Trojka, the Russian tea rooms for breakfast. J Restaurant is an Italian and they do a great breakfast if you’re very hungry. J’s is also opposite the shop so I can go in before work and I’m never late – theoretically! Although I always see my assistant opening up and I have to signal “five more minutes!” while I’m having a latte! Trojka, 101 Regents Park Road, NW1 8UR

LUNCH There are lots of gastro pubs around here. The Pembroke is nice but I’d recommend The Landsdowne. It’s very fashionable and there’s always quite a cool crowd hanging out in there. The Landsdowne, 90 Gloucester Avenue, NW1 8HX

IN THE EVENINGS Although I like going into central London for dinner sometimes, in Primrose Hill there’s everything on the doorstep if I want to meet friends around here after work. I’ve been to Lemonia a few times. Of course Odette’s is fantastic for a real treat and serves lovely French food. I love the old-fashioned service and style of it all. Odette’s, 130 Regents Park Road, NW1 8XL

THE AREA

I love the fact that Primrose Hill is unique, there are no chains - it’s independent and that lends it a certain charm. Plus there’s such a proactive residential community here which increases its value. There’s a sense that the residents want to make discoveries and make their surroundings their own. There really is something different to offer people and that brings trade in which supports the community. I suppose there’s a core group who organise events and support each other.

SHOPPING

I bought a fabulous pair of vintage earrings at Gillian’s recently (Judith Michael & Daughter). I only popped in for a chat and ended up getting them, I couldn’t resist! I wore them that evening. Judith Michael & Daughter 73 Regents Park Road, NW1 8UY

Elie Tahari Gabrielle Lane talks to Elie Tahari, the unassuming fashion designer behind one of the most successful labels in the world

F

ashion designer Elie Tahari’s style philosophy is a refreshingly simple and uplifting one: “You should never let clothes wear you,” he declares. “Clothes should compliment a woman’s natural beauty and unique shape and the most important rule is to wear clothes that fit.” While the motto certainly seems positive and very welcome, his assertion that fashion is secondary to the preferences and lifestyles of modern women is even more surprising and commendable considering Tahari is a New York Fashion Week regular, and a man who presides over a $500m empire. That said, attractive yet wearable collections are his signature and this talent for infusing classics (a tailored suit, an elegant maxi-dress or a delicate silk blouse) with contemporary and interesting touches is evident in his new Spring collection. “I was inspired by the rich past of ancient Egypt, the colours range from neutrals to sun-faded yellow and burnt coral, accented with vibrant teal and deep gold,” he says. And while the range of beautiful harem pants, slinky pale vest tops and eveningwear would work as the most perfect capsule wardrobe, down-to-earth Tahari is happy to recommend key pieces for the savvy investor who is looking for one special item. “This season it’s all about a pop of colour. Think an orange bag or a purple shoe to brighten up your look. I’d pick our Annalyse gown as dress of the season; it could be worn with heels for a black tie event or dressed down with flat sandals.” Tahari has been creating such looks for decades, having moved to New York City in the 1970s, from the Israeli orphanage where he grew up. In spite of having less than $100 to his name, his ambition was clear. “I knew as soon as I started working in the Garment Center in New York that I wanted to get into the fashion business. I saw the designers and thought ‘I know I can do that!’” he explains. And these days, in spite of overseeing the expansion of his label into over 40 countries, he still bases himself amongst the buzz of Manhattan. “I am always designing and I work all day. I even wake up with ideas and have to write them down.” He still produces the majority of his designs (which now include luxury menswear and accessories) at the studio with his team, and reveals his plans to celebrate with them after the A/W12 catwalk show in February. “I will toast to all our hard work first, and then I will celebrate with my kids, Jeremey and Zoe. I love them more than anything in the world.” n

spare room… Meditation Lounge

< V is for Villiers

The frenetic nature of life in the capital lends itself to the creation of a beautiful retreat in the heart of the house. St John’s Wood-based Michelle Pabarcius has extensive experience in creating award-winning interiors which can transform lifestyles. Her skills include home harmonising, a design process which considers the principles of feng shui, subtle energies, electromagnetic radiation and colour to create purposeful environments with a great ambience. The room shown is a grand meditation room. www.mp-designsolutions.co.uk

For two decades Villiers has remained at the forefront of design, producing very unique furniture, lighting and accessories. Glossy finishes include polished nickel, antique gold and white lacquer, but it is the complex shapes which really set each piece apart; table legs curve and coil beneath sheaths of marble, seat backs have undulating forms and mirrors inspire with flame-cut, textured frames. www.villiersbrothers.co.uk

From London to Newcastle Design-focused property developer Londonewcastle’s collaboration with design duo Felder Felder at The Henson in Camden showcases a winning combination of leather, metal and stone textures with a rich earthy colour pallet

L

ondonnewcastle’s developments often involve buildings full of character and historical interest, which have a strong focus on innovative design. Responsible for the award-winning Arundel Square in Islington, as well as top properties Embassy Court in St John’s Wood and The Henson in Camden, the company’s partnership with experts from different creative fields – be it interior design, lighting design, fashion or architecture – has achieved some truly original looks across their portfolio. The Henson in Camden, a landmark warehouse conversion right on The Regent’s Canal, features at its heart a stunning loft-style apartment by German-born fashion design duo Daniela and Annette Felder. As the focal point of the apartment, the living room space features a Felder Felder-designed couch, upholstered in the fire print featured in Felder Felder’s SS10 show collection, alongside a metal coffee table and a signature Felder Felder studded metal wall, providing a dramatic backdrop. The communal space also includes an original lighting feature – a Victorian fabric roll holder with a leather stud detail has been transformed into a

standing lamp. The distinctive colour palette of distressed charcoals runs throughout the design, further adding to the ambient energy. In contrast to the industrial feel of the living room, the bedroom exudes an altogether more sensual and intimate feel. Classic Bordeaux colours permeate with a light installation of individual hanging bulbs, embellished curtains, cushions and mirrors designed by the duo. As art is central to the design of Londonewcastle and Felder Felder, the entrance room has been completely covered in artwork by David Packard, inspired by Felder Felder fashion images. The rich history and legacy of The Henson building proved an inextricable source of inspiration to Felder Felder. With the rich punk heritage of Camden, and the more sophisticated and refined qualities of Primrose Hill, the location demanded homage to contrasts and playfulness. The result is a modern and sexy apartment, which is distinctly urban and has a clear Felder Felder imprint and aesthetic. www.londonewcastle.co.uk

A Dream for Two

“Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds.” Cartier’s bespoke diamond engagement rings adhere to this Shakespearean philosophy of everlasting devotion

Renowned French jeweller Cartier has always championed the theme of love, having been associated with legendary romantic couples for more than 160 years, including Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco and Dame Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. The ‘Set for You by Cartier’ bespoke service allows couples to create their own engagement ring in just three weeks. Choose from five rings for the setting of a round diamond that weighs from between 0.18 to 1.99 carats; perhaps the refined, platinum-wire body of the Déclaration ring, the diamond-paved scrolls and floral setting of the Ballerine ring or classic simplicity of the Solitaire 1895. n www.bridal.cartier.co.uk

The Queen of hearts and diamonds With 2012 comes the 175th anniversary of Tiffany & Co., an American jewellery institution known and loved worldwide for its legacy, design, celebrated following and, of course, the iconic Tiffany little blue box. Annabel Harrison steps back in time to recount the Tiffany story

‘‘I

t calms me down right away. The quietness and the proud look of it; nothing very bad could happen to you there. If I could find a real-life place that’d make me feel like Tiffany’s, then I’d buy some furniture and give the cat a name!” Many famous words have been spoken about Tiffany & Co. over the decades, but for almost every woman, few will have resonated as much as those spoken by the adored Audrey Hepburn, who sought solace in the New York store in the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. For many women, too, key milestones in their lives will be forever associated with Tiffany : a teenager is given a silver Elsa Peretti Open Heart pendant to mark her 18th birthday (just as I did); a university graduate receives a lucky Tiffany Twist clover charm to commemorate her achievements; a young woman accepts a marriage proposal and an exquisite diamond Tiffany ring; and an elegant lady thanks her husband for a bespoke Tiffany gift on their 25th silver wedding anniversary. So where did the story start? Have women always been so enchanted by the prospect of a little blue box? In 1837, 25-year-old Charles Lewis Tiffany, inspired by the dynamic growth and extravagant tastes in New York at the time, opened a new emporium with Teddy Young, named Tiffany, Young and Ellis. It sold stationery and fancy goods, and fashionable ladies in silks and satins descended upon the store, thrilled by the exquisite and beautifully patterned designs. Having introduced major gemstones to the United States in 1848, Charles Tiffany earned himself the moniker “King of Diamonds” and five years later, he took full control of the company. With this came the shortened name Tiffany & Co., as well as a firm emphasis on jewellery, arguably the best decision that Tiffany could have made for his company. By 1906, the Big Apple was smitten. The New York Sun reported that “Tiffany has one thing in stock that you cannot buy of [Charles Tiffany] for as much money as you may offer; he will only give it to you. And that is one of his boxes.” In the decades that followed, Tiffany & Co. amassed an impressive roll-call of famous admirers. The late Dame Elizabeth Taylor, who accumulated a fabulous collection during her lifetime, had a penchant for beautiful jewellery and was often gifted with exquisite pieces: “My mother says I didn’t open my eyes for eight days after I was born, but when I did, the first thing I saw was an engagement ring. I was hooked.” Taylor received a Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany dolphin clip from Richard Burton and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis made Schlumberger’s jewellery her signature. In fact she wore Schlumberger’s

Small square boxes are dangerous. Every woman knows there are only two kinds of rings: The Ring and all other rings gold and enamel bracelets so frequently in the early and mid-1960s that the press nicknamed them “Jackie bracelets”. Equally, references in films, song lyrics and popular culture undoubtedly boosted the brand’s reputation as one that offers its customers style, luxury and quality. Marilyn Monroe exclaimed “Tiffany’s!” in Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend and Eartha Kitt implored Santa Baby for “decorations bought at Tiffany’s”. The flagship store has been located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street in Manhattan since 1940 and the polished granite exterior is well-known as the location for a number of films including, of course, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The first Super Bowl trophy, awarded in 1967, was a Tiffany design and, perhaps most significantly, but unbeknown to many, the Great Seal of the United States, as shown on the trillions of dollar bills that are exchanged each year, was redesigned by Tiffany in the 1880s, an honour that cannot be underestimated. In addition to such wide-ranging design and cultural influence, the very name Tiffany has become synonymous with romance and love. Upon visiting the company’s website, a pale turquoise tab in the top right hand corner catches my attention, inscribed with the words “What makes love true”. This leads to a site of the same name, which features sections prettily entitled Love Stories and The Art of Romance, essentially, paying homage to love. There are even Tiffany Tips, for “when love gets serious”: Tiffany Tip No. 5 is particularly pertinent this

month; “Small square boxes are dangerous. Every woman knows there are only two kinds of rings: The Ring, and all other rings. An unwed man presenting the latter had better prepare a clever preamble or look for cover.” Unsurprisingly, there are perfect presents for Valentine’s Day from the company which has long been associated with the heart emblem;

the Tiffany Hearts® collection features elegant lockets suspended from fine chains. A heart locket of 18-carat rose gold is inscribed with “I Love You”, although any other romantic, personal message may be kept within the locket. Heart lockets of sterling silver can share the “I Love You” inscription or sparkle with diamonds at the locket’s centre. If your lady loves pink, the vibrant pink spinel earrings, perfectly matched and totalling 11.19 carats, are paired with sparkling diamond florets. Particular attention has been paid to unleashing the prettiest of colours, through skilful hand cutting of the gems. Gentlemen, if you are proposing this Valentine’s Day and take one piece of advice, it must be this. Tiffany Tip No. 20: “Remember, over a lifetime, a woman looks at her ring a million times”. Choose wisely. n The Tiffany Hearts® collection is available at select Tiffany & Co. stores worldwide and prices range from £325 to £660. Chains are sold separately. The pink spinel and diamond earrings in platinum are priced at £38,700. Tiffany & Co., 25 Old Bond Street 00800 2000 1122, www.tiffany.co.uk

watch news Blancpain: feel the love

Stealing the show at SIHH Joining the 18 watch exhibitors and 1,200 journalists at Geneva’s Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) last month were 12,500 guests privileged enough to have been invited to one of the world’s foremost watch expositions. Celebrating its 20th birthday, SIHH 2012 saw the likes of Audemars Piguet, Girard-Perregaux, Greubel Forsey and Vacheron Constantin premiere the finest watches from their latest collections. While each brand managed to enamour

in some way, it was creations by IWC and A. Lange & Söhne that stole the show for Vantage magazine. Affirming their reputation as purveyors of premium pilot watches, IWC unveiled the Pilot Chronograph Top Gun Miramar (pictured), a watch that features a brand new IWC 46mm ceramic case and massive 168 hour power reserve. Across the exhibition hall A. Lange & Söhne revealed what will surely prove one of the bestlooking watches of the year: the Datograph Up/ Down (as shown overleaf).

One to Watch Each month, we select our watch of the moment: once again, Patek Philippe comes up trumps with its Twenty-4

Launched in 1999, Patek Philippe’s Twenty-4 was created for the refined, active woman who seeks a watch that reflects her style. The curved silhouette of the case is a loving caress for the feminine wrist

For some, Valentine’s Day means little more than overpriced flowers and a meal at a packed restaurant. This is not the case for the watchmakers at Blancpain; for them, the day is an annual excuse to get creative. True to form, February 2012 sees the brand launch a limited series of romantic timepieces. Set with 2.95 carats of precious stones and boasting a diamond-set bezel, each of the 14 Saint-Valentine 2012 Chronographs is fitted with a white leather alligator strap and presented in a wooden box delicately lined with white nappa leather. In an additional nod to Cupid, the heart-shaped counterweight of the central sweep seconds hand is delicately hand-painted with a feather.

Race-Inspired

Welcome to Chopard’s fifth limited edition Jacky Ickx watch. Inspired by the friendship between the legendary race-driver and Chopard Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, the piece has been engineered with the needs of a racing driver in mind. In addition to the 60 minute counter at nine o’clock, the watch features a 24-hour counter at 12 o’clock, allowing a driver to check the remaining duration of a race, a flyback function that means a user can start a new timing operation without first resetting the hands, and a tachometric scale on the bezel that serves to measure speed over a 1,000 metre distance.

Backstage beauty PRETTY PASTELS There are few trends which translate as easily from catwalk to counter as Spring/Summer 2012’s penchant for candy-esque colours. From the soft and subtle pink tones of Tommy Hilfiger’s collection, to the playful subversion of the Meadham Kirchoff show, which saw models styled as quirky dolls complete with splashes of icy MAC pigments on their cheeks and brows, there is a way for all to update their beauty routine in a flattering way. Enter the delicate hues of the latest releases from the likes of Chanel and YSL. While the former consistently dictates the most coveted nail varnish shade of the season, the latter fuses high quality formulations with a real sense of fun.

The 10,000 sq ft space is a pure white cloud of luxury, accented by chrome and glass – a theme continued throughout 12 spacious treatment rooms, a relaxation area, gym and steam room facilities. experiences for pregnant guests such as delicate facials and a full body massage which employs camomile to relieve tension in the back and legs. However, one of the most interesting aspects of the experience menu is a synergistic range of cuisine which is designed to exploit the value of nutrition. Clients can opt to sample Devonshire crab, tropical fruit salads and butternut squash roasted with nutmeg to support the various aims of their visit, such as detoxification or greater radiance. Testifying to the spa’s fashionable credentials, Agua is also the London base of eminent tanning artist James Read and personal trainer Jamie Baird and the spa attracts a discerning and imageconscious clientele seeking excellence. Infused with glamour, Agua is therefore the ideal spa to visit ahead of a big occasion. Its pristine appearance and notable ambassadors make it slightly awe inspiring but very, very special. n 50 Berners Street, W1T 3NG www.sandersonlondon.com

Treatment This February, Agua expands its treatment menu to offer friends or partners the opportunity to experience simultaneous pampering. The visit starts with access to the steam room and relaxation area and concludes with delicious chocolatedipped strawberries and champagne, the perfect finish to one and a half hours of pure indulgence. Though it’s wonderful to share the experience with a companion, it’s easy to drift off, while your own therapist executes a customised blend of pressures, strokes and techniques which include a divine scalp treatment. Heart of the Matter Krishna Moorthy, consultant upper gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgeon at The Wellington Hospital looks at the new link between heartburn and cancer and what signs to keep an eye on

H

eartburn is a result of reflux of acid from the stomach to the oesophagus (gullet). There is an increasing incidence of heartburn in the population, most likely due to changing dietary habits, lifestyle and the rising incidence of obesity, and new evidence is suggesting that this rise in the incidence of acid reflux is accompanied by a rising incidence of a new type of cancer of the oesophagus. Around 20 years ago, nearly all cancers of the oesophagus were cancers of the cells that line the inside of the oesophagus, but recently, we are seeing a new type of cancer, called adenocarcinoma (AC) that occurs in the lower oesophagus. There is abundant research that suggests that this is due to an ‘inflammation to cancer’ cascade, secondary to acid induced cell damage. Long standing acid reflux causes a change in the lining of the oesophagus, which causes the cells to become unstable which can lead to cancers.

the progression to cancer. In addition, surgery has also advanced so that patients with early cancer can undergo key-hole surgery. Prevention of AC should involve prevention and early treatment of reflux through simple measures, such as weight loss and dietary and lifestyle changes. Once a patient has developed reflux, the treatment can be medical, with anti- acid medications, or through surgery performed by key-hole techniques. Though controversial, there is some evidence that key-hole surgery is more effective in preventing and controlling the acid induced cell damage. There are probably a large number of people who are dependant on anti-acid drugs to control their reflux symptoms. In order to detect those who may have Barrett’ oesophagus, it is recommended that those patients who are over 50 and have had heartburn like symptoms for more than five years should undergo an endoscopy.

AC is on the rise in the UK and survival from this is probably among the worst amongst all cancers. This is for a number of reasons, but a delay in diagnosis is probably one of the leading causes. Only around 25 per cent of the cancers that are referred to a cancer unit are treatable with a curative intent. Over the past decade, the growing realisation of the link between acid reflux and AC has given rise to a number of developments and innovative treatments, and those patients who are at risk are now advised to have an endoscopy every two years, with multiple biopsies to detect any unstable cells. If detected, action can be taken early and progression to cancer can be halted. Surgery for cancer of oesophagus is associated with considerable risks and complications. With expertise limited to a few large centres, outcomes have improved but surgery is still a major intervention. Over the past few years, there have been new endoscopic treatments that have been shown to successfully destroy the unstable cells and control

Early detection, currently only through endoscopy, and minimally invasive treatments are going to be only way to prevent a large majority of people from developing this aggressive form of cancer. TOP TIPS 1. Prevention and early recognition and treatment of acid reflux are critical to the prevention of cancer of the oesophagus. 2. Prevention consists of weight loss, eating a healthy diet and smoking cessation. 3. If you are over 50 and have suffered with heartburn or have been on anti-acid medications for more than five years, you should see your GP for consideration of an endoscopy. 4. If you have been taking anti-acid medication and are not having much relief or would like to know more about surgery, request your GP for a referral to a surgeon.

GP SESSIONs: Women’s Health Dr Lisa Anderson talks to us about screening for cervical cancer, the importance of attending screenings and those groups more at risk Around 900 women die of cervical cancer in the UK each year; this number could be dramatically reduced by attending for screening. Cervical screening aims to identify early changes in the cells of the cervix (the neck of the womb) that may, if left unmonitored, develop into cancerous cells. By identifying these early changes we can treat them - and so prevent the development of cervical cancer in around 75 per cent of cases. The NHS offers cervical screening every three years to those women aged 25-49 and every five years between

the ages of 50 and 64. Yet, certain groups of women are more at risk than others, including smokers, those who have had sexual intercourse at an early age or multiple sexual partners, and those on immunosuppressant drugs. In many countries, cervical screening is carried out annually and indeed many women prefer to have this done annually for reassurance. The test is best done during the middle part of the menstrual cycle. Any spermicidal gels or lubricants should not be used for 24 hours before the test as the chemicals they contain may affect the results. At The Wellington Hospital, Dr Anderson is happy to see women from the age of 20 for a smear (if appropriate) and results are available within 24-48 hours. This can be combined with a well woman check if required.

For further information please visit The Wellington Hospital www.thewellingtonhospital.com or contact the Enquiry Helpline on 020 7483 5148.

wine A taste of the new Yohann Jousselin, master sommelier at The Vineyard at Stockcross, and UK Sommelier of the Year 2011, explains his interest in new upcoming and lesser known wine areas

O

ur wine list has around three thousand wines from all over the world. My recent work on the wine list has mainly been to concentrate on less expected wine regions around the world. I have always had a great interest in discovering new wine areas, especially when the quality follows. Recently we have been listing new references from the following wine regions: Tokaji of Hungary, Sturovo of Slovakia, Bekaa Valley of Lebanon, Judean Hills of Israel, Meknes of Morocco, Brda of Slovenia and Montevideo of Uruguay. They are a great asset to our wine list and are very well received by our clients. We have recently designed a wine selection to match our tasting menu with five glasses of wine from these selected areas. We have also designed a wine list with over 120 wines available by the glass or carafe where most of these new wines are offered. Below are a few examples of my favourite wines from less known wine areas. Bouza, Albarino, Montevideo Valley, Uruguay, 2009 (£31 on our wine list) Uruguay is a country which has developed a lot in terms of quality over the last ten years. Tannat is the main grape variety for red wine, however there are few interesting whites such as this Albarino. Bouza is a boutique winery based in the Montevideo Valley. This wine is dry, fresh, shows an elegant panel of fresh white fruits such as pear and apple with a crisp finish on the acidity. It is a great alternative to a classic white sancerre. Bierzo, Descendientes de J. Palacios, Petalos, Galicia, Spain, 2008 (£36.50 on our wine list) The North West part of Spain has been an area in recent years which I have found very interesting in term of quality and price. White and red wines from this area are becoming really exciting. Bierzo is located in Galicia, and this red wine is made with a local grape variety called Mencia. This wine is medium bodied with a great concentration of red fruits and some lovely soft tannins. Chateau Bela, Riesling, Egon Muller, Sturovo, Slovakia, 2004 (£54 on our wine list) Egon Muller is a very exciting producer. Made in a slightly less intense style than his German Riesling, this wine offers a great panel of citrus fruits such as lemon and lime zests followed by a hint of apple aromas. The finish shows a touch of residual sugar with a great balance. n www.the-vineyard.co.uk

the Spanish Corner Authentic cuisine and an exemplary wine list is the order of the day at Spanish eatery Iberica in Marylebone, says Emma Johnson

M

y husband’s parents live on the coast of southern Spain, a location that not only makes for some pretty wonderful family holidays, but also ensures we both drink more than our fair share of Rioja. And while we love a good French wine list, it’s wonderful to have your choice of Spanish tipples. Enter Iberica, with the kind of well-informed wine list, created by Best Spanish Sommelier 2008 Bruno Murciano, that makes my heart (and taste buds) sing. Situated on the corner of Great Portland and Devonshire streets, this two floor, glass-walled delight is modern in style but classic in inspiration, and everything from appetisers and snacks to charcuterie, desserts, and even the staff, is unashamedly Spanish. We kick off our dinner with a plate of spicy, salty padron peppers and a delicious glass of the excellent NV Vilarnau Brut, a revelation of crisp fruit – so different from the standard cava options – and peruse the extensive and interesting menu. On offer is a range of everything from traditional croquettes, jamon iberico cuts and cured meats to tapas, raciones and sharer plates, as well as familysized portions of paella served at Sunday lunch. Head chef Cesar Garcia pops out to advise us on some of his favourite dishes, and he’s as charming as he is passionate about the menu. On his wise advice we start with Iberica ham croquettes – a wonderful, warming way to begin the meal - and follow this with asparagus toast, a rich tasty dish, especially with the added drizzle of truffle oil. While we decide what we want next, we turn our attention to the wine. The first page of the wine list has an enticing selection of fine and rare wines, ranging upwards from £115 and include two stunning and renowned Riojas – the 1996 ‘Pagos Viejos’ Bodegas Artadi and the 2000 Viña El Pisón Rioja Reserva. A little further down the list and there’s still a wealth of options to delight and amaze, including a 2005 Dinastia Vivanco Reserva, and the Bodegas Beronia 2004 that we finally decide on. Our sommelier is well-informed and generous with his suggestions, showing us a good selection of choices and prices, and the wine we finally select is wonderful, bold and smoky, with strong fruit. Next up food-wise is the (almost compulsory) cured hams section. I’ve eaten Iberico ham in Spain a fair few times, and Cesar recommends we try a wider selection to get a good idea of the meats on offer – the platter that arrives is resplendent with chorizo, pork loin, salchicho, cecina and, of course, Iberico ham – and it’s wonderful. Spicy chorizo and pungent pork loin is well-matched with our delicious Rioja. We then select a few dishes from the Sea and Land sections. Black rice with cuttlefish, prawns and alioli is a classic dish well-executed, while pan fried scallops, cauliflower puree, escabeche, fennel and apple is an impressive rendering of a very much

LOW, ST JAMES

S

et beneath the glamorous environs of St James is a new private members club which places the focus of an excellent evening out firmly on the music. Low is founded by Aura founder David Serlui in collaboration with Andy Giorgiani, ex Brompton Club partner, and testifies to the pair’s notable experience within the hospitality industry. First, there is the location of the venue itself, accessed via a hidden staircase at the rear of an upmarket West End restaurant - suitably contributing to the sense of discretion and exclusivity. Second is the stylish and contemporary design; a ceiling embedded with thousands of LED lights sets the vibrant ambience across a sweeping dancefloor which is flanked by leather booths and matching ottomans.

State-of-the-art VOID speakers ensure exceptional sound quality, which is virtually unrivalled (only two other venues in the world have such comprehensive systems) and such conscientiousness is certainly warranted; Low prides itself on showcasing some of the most promising international talents on the decks through an incredible weekly programme of house, dance and techno. While the effect is definitely that of a secretive and enviably fashionable warehouse, the surroundings are beautifully boutique, epitomised by a cocktail menu which fuses delicious classics and fresh, exotic mixes and a tempting selection of light dishes. n www.lowmembersclub.com

Portrait of Love A unique opportunity to acquire one of celebrated painter Picasso’s most iconic pieces Painted in 1949, shortly after the birth of his daughter, Paloma, this classic Picasso composition is a sensual and playful depiction of his then partner, Françoise Gilot, which demonstrates his earnest passion for her. Both suggestive and serious, the piece shows her with wide eyes, generous lips and flowing hair, a trait common in many of Picasso’s portraits of Françoise. While much of the colour palette is earthy tones of grey and brown, flecks of red add a fleshy quality and suggest a vibrant life force, and the layered composition

Chemistry or careful choreography? Gabrielle Lane considers the process of attraction in 2012

W

hether you regard Valentine’s Day as a romantic occasion or a commercial enterprise, many people will have resolved to improve their love lives this year. And, in an era where many of us consider ourselves too busy to make the time and effort to meet someone new, the work of dating expert and teacher Adam Lyons is certainly interesting. “There are very simple steps to generating attraction with somebody, and you only need five minutes of their time,” Lyons declares. “I’ve yet to meet a student who could not improve from learning dating techniques.” And it seems Adam’s students could be anyone, from the colleague whose family background is similar to yours, the friend-of-a-friend with whom you share some playful banter or the neighbour to whom you’ve somehow disclosed your darkest fears. Whoever they are, chances are, they’re people who you’ve at least thought about dating. Lyons has shot to fame as one of the world’s leading ‘pick-up’ artists, tutoring thousands of clients every year, including those in London, on how to maximise their success with those they find attractive by using different behaviours and topics of conversation. “I was voted ‘Least Likely to Ever Get a Girlfriend’ at school,” he says. “I wanted to do something about it and read every book on the subject of dating and attraction. I set about trying (the principles) and kept what worked. I’ve gone from having almost no luck with women to being able to consciously date and attract the kind of girls I am interested in.” Is it really possible to seduce almost anyone? Yes, says Lyons. “Pre-existing physical attraction is always a factor. However, this factor disappears rapidly once conversation starts – humour is worth 100 times more and is easily accessible to all, equally.” Psychologist Dr Gian Gonzaga, who specialises in relationships, also agrees that physical attraction only goes so far. However, he believes the process is much more complex than systematically building and breaking rapport. “How well two people seem to understand each other can create a sense of connection between them. However, second is biology or how well their immune systems mix; much of why you are

lifestyle

“I’ve yet to meet a student who could not improve from learning dating techniques.” physically attracted to someone is because the potential offspring would be healthy. When you meet someone and it’s the right match of immune systems, you are more attracted to them.” Lyons concedes that some people will always be cynical, and talks of his work in terms of benefitting others and making them realise what they do well. Indeed, he lists the mistakes we can make when trying to attract someone – sticking to too much of a routine and not meeting new people or trying to impress by exaggerating our possessions and careers, among the actions he discourages. Arguably therefore, there is some good in encouraging others to try new experiences and remain open to the unexpected. Lyons’ advice also seems to reflect the traits which Dr Gian Gonzaga identifies as the most universally attractive, including intelligence, adaptability, humour and kindness; showing an interest in others and making light-hearted fun of yourself form key parts of the lessons in pick-up artist training. However, those looking for lasting love be warned: “There are popular behavioural techniques for seducing people,” accepts Dr Gonzaga. “However, these techniques are often based on deception and trickery and being deceptive works against starting a good long-term relationship. If you are looking for more than a single night, it is better to be honest about yourself. Be true to who you are, in the long run the other person is going to find out things about you anyway.” n www.puatraining.com Dr Gian Gonzaga is senior director of research and relationship scientist at dating website, www.eharmony.co.uk

FIVE of

the best

Golf Hotels Turnberry Resort

These five hotels and courses represent some of the very best places to stay and play, says Craig Morrison Turnberry Resort

Gleneagles

South West Scotland boasts countless cracking courses, and Turnberry is perhaps the best course in Ayrshire, or Britain maybe, the world perhaps? Regularly ranked amongst the top three courses on the planet, The Ailsa Course is a classic, a Mouton Rothschild 1945 of a linksland challenge. The recently refurbished hotel is a great place to stay too, deluxe ocean-view rooms offer acres of space, comfortable modernity and stunning vistas. www.turnberry.co.uk

Gleneagles The Gleneagles Hotel is seriously good. The suites, the spa, the sports facilities, the two Michelin-starred food – they’re all fantastic. The Gleneagles Golf Courses are also seriously good. The King’s Course is grand and scenic, boasting some of Perthshire’s finest views, while the Queen’s Course is pretty and picturesque. Both are complemented by The PGA Centenary – bigger and bolder, it’s a challenge for all golfers, including the world’s best. The 2014 Ryder Cup matches will be played on it. www.gleneagles.com

Celtic Manor Celtic Manor

Celtic Manor in Newport, Wales, between Bristol and Cardiff, claims recent Ryder Cup history, having hosted the 2010 event. The golf, then, is thrilling and dramatic, and made for television. No expense was spared building three courses here: the Twenty Ten, The Roman Road and the Montgomerie. The colossal clubhouse alone cost £20m. The impressive five star resort is equally vast with 400 bedrooms, five restaurants and two health clubs. And it is very good indeed. www.celtic-manor.com

Lough Erne Resort

Lough Erne

This is Northern Ireland’s first five star resort, and Nick Faldo’s phenomenal course is one of the best inland creations of recent times – tough but fair, perfectly presented, thrillingly routed through trees, over hills and hard by the water’s edge, always emphasising the location’s natural charms. The 120 rooms and 25 luxury lodges are very special and most afford fabulous views of the waterlogged landscape. www.lougherne.com

The Grove The Grove is stylish indeed – all-singing, valet-parking, club-cleaning, shoe-polishing, US standard service. The guest rooms are gorgeous, the spa and pool fabulous and the food excellent. The golf course, created by Kyle Philips, is thoughtful and thrilling, for elite players and, from forward tees, for corporate hackers or romantic weekenders. n www.thegrove.co.uk

Land of the free With its own time zone, a strict ‘no shoes’ policy and vast over-water villas complete with their own infinity pools, divine Maldivian resort Huvafen Fushi is island living at its most exclusive, says Emma Johnson

‘‘W

elcome to the Maldives, please set your watch forward one hour,” smiles Faris, our own private thakuru (butler), as he hands us a cool glass of something deliciously cucumber-y and guides us onto a private speedboat. “This way you get more sunlight and the optimum time to watch the sunset with cocktails on the beach every evening,” he explains, before we set off, bouncing across the crystal blue waves to the island. We are here on our honeymoon and from the moment we step off our plane in Male, there’s been a sense that life is shifting into a totally different gear. We arrive after a 25 minute trip through some of the most beautiful turquoise waters and golden sand vistas I’ve ever seen, and are taken straight to our ocean bungalow - a palatial villa, set across the blue lagoon offering uninterrupted panoramic views across the sea, and total and complete privacy. Champagne and fresh fruit welcomes us as we arrive, and after a quick change into something more befitting island life we find ourselves popping the champagne cork and relaxing in the warm afternoon sunshine on our private terrace – all within an hour of landing at the airport. This is why they call these holidays ‘fly and flop’. And how right they are. With the entire trip organised effortlessly and efficiently through Abercrombie & Kent, getting here has been seamless and simple, with every little detail covered. And now we’re here, real life has already flooded away, leaving a relaxed sense of calm and comfort. Huvafen Fushi is one of many island resorts in the idyllic Maldives, and, while any one of them offers the kind of unsurpassed island escape you’d expect here, there is something really special about this place. With only 43 villas the island never feels busy, but it never feels empty either. There’s a distinctly trendy edge, a more laidback, laissez faire approach to life than you find on some of the larger islands, and yet whether you want to be left alone, or looked after at every turn, Huvafen just seems to meet your needs. Our villa is divine, generously spacious, romantic, welcoming, and cleaned twice a day - we never have to pick up after ourselves or lift a finger to make the bed. Little details like Bose iPod docking stations - complete with preloaded iPod with 10,000 songs, as well as separate controls for the bathroom, bedroom and terrace. In addition to a Nespresso coffee machine, a vast television, a DVD and games library, a book for interpreting dreams, REN shower and bath products, a giant noughts and crosses game outside, two sunbeds and a huge ‘love seat’ perfectly placed to watch the sunset each evening

means it’s easy to spend all day relaxing here. Even the mini bar strikes the right note, stocked with a good choice of full-sized bottles of wine, champagne, beers and spirits, (all available for exactly the same price as the main resort bar), as well as an underwater camera, CDs of soothing music, sketch books, complimentary fresh milk and a vast array of snacks. The generosity of space here also makes it easy to relax, and not feel claustrophobic, and the glass floored living room, which provides a 24 hour aquarium view of the reef below, was a wonderful addition, especially on the odd occasion that we saw reef sharks and shoals of colourful reef fish. Snorkelling and water sports in general are big business here – with everything from full-on scuba diving sessions available to free snorkel hire and everything in between, even the simple sting ray feeding on the beach every evening is an incredible sight to behold, as giant sting rays and jack fish splash about in the shallows competing for fish. Sealife here is really second to none, and the island prides itself on its excellent house reef, and its work to regenerate the existing reefs. ‘Adopting’ a coral reef is one of the more sedate excursions on offer and it’s well worth doing, if only to learn some amazing facts about coral, and see the little differences even you can make.

t r av e l

However, if exertion is not the order of the day, then the island is perfectly equipped to ensure maximum relaxation. The famous Lime spa, with the only underwater treatment rooms in the world, offers complete escape, with treatments from REN and Anne Semonin, as well as an ice room and cool relaxation rooms with views across the turquoise lagoon. I indulged with an Anne Semonin bespoke facial and was impressed with the spa’s attention to detail. Rather sunburnt after two days of misleading clouds, my therapist gently and expertly treated my sore skin with a variety of divine products that left my skin feeling rejuvenated and hydrated; my sunburn, needless to say, felt almost healed and was remarkably improved. Impressive stuff. Later on we also treated ourselves to a back massage, and I loved the novelty of having the preliminary foot treatment outside on the sundeck, before heading in to the glass-floored treatment room, meaning you can watch hundreds of brightly coloured fish swimming around the reef throughout your massage; even the atmospheric sound of the waves didn’t come from a CD, but a nearby window. And this is what Huvafen does so well. While every amenity and luxury you would expect is available here, every effort has been made to ensure that the most is made out of the beautiful island location. Restaurants have sandy floors and ocean views, and most have excellent viewing spaces, lit at night so you can see sealife swimming by. Walkways throughout the island are sandy paths winding between lush greenery, and vast sprawling trees provide canopies for beachside eateries, complete with fairy lights twinkling in their branches. The freshwater infinity pool is so close to the ocean that herons often come and perch on the edge of it, while dotted around the whole island are hammocks, relaxation beds and romantic love seats for a moment of private or quiet time. Food here is exceptional and the choice impressive. Salt and Raw, the two signature

86

restaurants offer exemplary seafood at dinner and Japanese inspired raw dishes at lunch respectively. Situated at the end of a long walkway in the middle of the ocean, the seaside influence is everywhere, and a cool breeze flowing through the open doors at Raw offers the perfect environment to sip a cold glass of sauvignon and enjoy fresh reef fish and tom yam soup. Salt for dinner is romantic and classic, wooden decking and the illuminated ocean floor offer the perfect setting to enjoy champagne, lagoon crab and prawns cooked to exacting fine dining standards. For more relaxed dining we loved Foglianis – European and Asian cuisine served on the beach at lunch time, and Celsius’s offering of traditional Maldivian and Indian cuisine with a real focus on fish and spices is the perfect place for an evening meal. Special evenings, including fish markets, barbeques and traditional Maldivian nights add to the options, while destination dining here means anywhere you like on the island. Our wonderful thakuru put together a beautifully romantic evening on a secluded beach with lobster and champagne. Other options include in-room dining, a sunset cruise aboard a Dhoni (a traditional Maldivian fishing boat), Indian fusion cooked in a traditional sunken kitchen and served at the heart of the island’s herb and vegetable garden, and a wine matching dinner in the resort’s underground

wine cellar. For drinks, UmBar provides the perfect place to watch the sunset each evening, and enjoy expertly mixed cocktails, or to work your way through a selection of beautiful wines from the resort’s impressive and wideranging list. It might seem like a lot of choice, but being at Huvafen is just so easy, and the days seemed to come together with perfect simplicity. Having your own personal thakuru is also a total joy, with your simplest or most complicated needs catered for – several times we went to organise something, only to find Faris had already thought of it for us. As romantic holidays go, they don’t get much better than Huvafen Fushi, offering privacy, romance and an entirely personalised experience. This is the best way to explore everything the Maldives stands for, and just for a while truly, truly escape. n www.huvafenfushi.peraquum.com

A Sense of history Legendary country house hotel Gravetye Manor exudes both pedigree and panache, says Beverley Byrne

E

stablished in 1958 by revolutionary restaurateur and hotelier Peter Herbert, Gravetye initally flourished as a vanguard country house hotel, serving exquisite cuisine to a discerning and glittering clientele. However, after his retirement in 2004, things took somewhat of a downturn, before 2011 saw the arrival of former Gravetye guest Jeremy Hosking, who brought a comprehensive programme of restoration to this historic house and garden. And what a history! Built in 1598 as a wedding gift for a local bride, it was later home to William Robinson, one of the leading garden theorists of the 19th Century, who lived at Gravetye for fifty years, from 1885, and is hugely responsible for the beautiful grounds still enjoyed by the Manor. As well as restoring the main house, the current owner is also making sure the gardens receive equal attention, which includes appointing visionary head gardener, Tom Coward to restore the flower garden, a wild garden, a magnolia walk and azalea bank, as well as the original Victorian glass houses and a magnificent one acre circular walled kitchen garden which during the summer provides most of the organic fruit and vegetables served in the restaurant. My first thought on entering this handsome mansion, is ‘thank heavens it hasn’t been mucked about with’. So many hotels courting the ‘country house’ soubriquet either chintz it up mercilessly or do the ‘boutique’ bit by herding edgy contemporary furniture into traditional rooms which wither beneath the onslaught. At Gravetye, ornate Victorian moulded ceilings and oak wall panels are complemented by sumptuous furnishings and opulent fabrics. Warmed by the open fire burning in an ornate fireplace in the reception room I come over all Downton Abbey and order afternoon tea served on exquisite china.

88

Bringing the garden into the manor, while not shying away from modern comfort, is the guiding spirit behind Gravetye’s recent renovation. My spacious room has wood panelled walls, sourced from the estate during Robinson’s time and, while the stone clad fireplace might be inscribed with the date 1598, the amenities are bang up to date with wi-fi, flat screen television and Bose iPod docking station. A secret door concealed within the panelling reveals a small room containing a fridge loaded with water, fruit juices, a classy coffee machine and posh teas contained in dinky voile pyramids. But the main attraction has to be the views. Long windows – one featuring a recessed window seat – overlook the formal flower gardens on one side of the room and on the other, an ornamental lake nestling in a deep wooded valley. That evening, I dine beside another striking fireplace in the impressive classical restaurant. Executive chef, Rupert Gleadow, promises ‘some of the most honest and delicious food in the area’ and neither the menu, nor the elaborate wine list, disappoints. Given the season, I’m glad to see game featured and my roast red leg partridge (preceded by pancetta wrapped Hebridean scallops) is elegantly executed. The following morning, breakfast in my room maintains this high level of decadence, served on crisp white table linen, I savour artistically arranged fresh berries, poached fruit and yoghurt laced with roasted almonds and local honey. It is a triumphant way to start the day. There is something very special about the subtle grandeur, the implicit luxury, the exquisite architecture and the glorious gardens of this place. In my opinion Gravetye Manor is still the pinnacle of perfection. n www.gravetyemanor.co.uk

Pain on the Piste

The London Hand and Wrist Unit look at ‘skier’s thumb’, how to recognise this common skiers injury and the treatments available

D

uring the skiing season ‘skier’s thumb’ becomes a common injury sustained on the slopes. When skiers fall whilst holding on to their poles, the thumb can be wrenched away from the rest of the hand and the ulnar collateral ligament (the ligament connecting the base of the thumb to the hand in the first webspace) can tear; resulting in immediate pain, swelling and bruising. Sometimes it can be difficult to diagnose the injury acutely and patients can often present later with pain and instability of the thumb. How is it diagnosed? If there is tenderness over the base of the thumb on the side of the first webspace, and the thumb is unstable (thumb stability is examined clinically and if necessary specialist X-rays or ultrasound can be used to clinch the diagnosis). What is the treatment? There are different types of ligament injury, which in turn determines the treatment. The tear can be partial or complete, and complete tears can sometimes include a small fragment of bone, which has been avulsed with the ligament, and is visible on X-ray. If the tear is incomplete or if there is only tenderness, but no instability of the joint, the injury can be treated by splinting for six to eight weeks. The splints are usually custom made by a trained hand therapist, though some off the shelf models are acceptable. If the tear is complete, the joint is unstable or there is a small fragment visible on the x-ray, then the ligament must be repaired surgically. What happens if I don’t have treatment? The long term effect of a torn ulnar collateral ligament is pain and an

unstable thumb, which leads to secondary deformities of the other joints of the thumb. What does surgery involve? The surgery involves a scar over the joint and a repair of the ligament. This can be done under local or general anaesthetic. Sometimes it is not possible to repair the ligament as it is, but extra material taken from an accessory wrist tendon is needed to strengthen the repair. If a small bony piece is attached to the ligament then this is replaced in its original position and secured. Post-operative care Even after an operation, the thumb is held in a splint for four to six weeks and you are regularly reviewed by your hand therapist. Normal light daily activities can be resumed after six to eight weeks without a splint, but a return to sport is only advised after three months. Once you get out of your splint, you will need to attend hand therapy again to strengthen your thumb and regain movement. Enjoy the slopes and watch those thumbs! Top tips for skiers When a skier falls or the pole gets stuck, the pole acts as a lever against the ulnar collateral ligament and thumb joint: 1. Do not put your hand inside the strap of the ski pole (you may lose the pole, but better that than injure your thumb) 2. Wear a thumb stabiliser (splint) 3. Don’t go into deep powder snow (This increases the chance of poles becoming stuck) 4. Opt for smaller handles on ski poles

HIGH OCTANE investing

Forget stamps, forgo stocks and shares… an old car is the up-and-coming place to put your money, says Matthew Carter

1957 Ferrari 410 Superamerica Coupé Darin Schnabel ©2011 courtesy RM Auctions

T

hirty years ago the then-new Classic and Sports Car magazine ran a reader competition as part of an early promotional push. The prize was a classic car, a 1970 Aston Martin DB6 Mk 2 Volante, one of just 37 built. The magazine reckoned the car was worth £25,000, a substantial sum back in the day. So substantial that the lucky winner sold it shortly after he took delivery and pocketed the cash. What a shame he didn’t wait a while. Astons have skyrocketed in value and if he still owned the DB6 today, he could expect to get £350,000 for it, and he would have had 30 years of enjoying a pretty special car. Granted, there would have been running costs; he would have had to pay to insure it, to have it serviced and perhaps repaired during that time. But whichever way you look at it, that’s a pretty strong investment. The trick, of course, would have been knowing back in 1982 what Aston Martins might be worth three decades hence. This is not a problem that’s gone away. “Which classic cars are going to jump in value over the next few years? If I knew that, I certainly wouldn’t tell you.” The speaker is Max Girardo, the head of RM Auctions in Europe, one of the leaders in the classic car auction field. RM’s most recent headline sale, in Battersea Park at the end of 2011, saw an extremely rare 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Tour de France sell for £2.24m. The star lot at RM’s next showcase event, coinciding with the Monaco Grand Prix, is a road-registered racer,

92

the 1968 Alfa Tipo 33. It won’t reach the dizzy heights of the Ferrari price but, thanks in part to its hugely original condition, it should easily top £500,000 and the new owner will undoubtedly get to show the car at Goodwood, one of those events where you can’t buy a place on the grid. It’s not all top end stuff, though, as that Battersea sale also saw a comparatively humble Triumph TR4 go for a hefty £33,600. It all proves that the collector’s car market is booming, despite the economic gloom threatening to engulf us all. “It’s all about passion,” says Max. “Our customers love and enjoy cars. They’ll happily spend £200,000 on a Ferrari Daytona and then make sure they use the car.” That’s the key to the collector’s car market: cars are far more exciting than stocks and shares – and less volatile – and, frankly, are more fun than stamps, jewellery or paintings. What better way to enjoy your money? Sadly, the chances of making a fortune from rare Ferraris, Bugattis and the like have probably passed as, when they come to market, they already have serious price tags. The trick is to uncover what’s going to be hot tomorrow when today’s prices are still cool. Despite his earlier threat, Max does have some suggestions for future classics. “I think the time is near when interesting cars from the 1980s will start to go up in value. The original BMW M3, for example, was the first of the breed and is generally acknowledged as a

real driver’s car. Avoid the ‘ordinary’ versions, especially those bought by the impecunious when values went right down and were then used as track day specials. “Look instead for a limited edition Evo model or models like the M3 Ravaglia, built to celebrate the success of Roberto Ravaglia, a leading BMW works racing driver. Rarity always helps.” Also in the 80s, the world rally championship was run for Group B supercars, hugely powerful racing cars, built to be hurled down narrow slippery rally stages rather than race tracks. They were outlawed after too many accidents claimed too many lives, but not before road-going versions had been built to comply with international competition regulations. Find yourself a pristine, low mileage Ford RS200 at the right price and you could be sitting on a serious investment. Driving it will be a noisy, raw, visceral experience, you won’t be able to use it to go on holiday (no luggage space) and getting parts won’t be easy, but you are guaranteed to have fun and to turn heads at the same time. As a rally car, the shortened Audi Quattro S1 was a formidable weapon, winning championships as it snarled its way around the world’s rally stages. As a road car, it was compromised by nervous handling and an engine built for competition, but as an investment, it’s looking strong. The same goes for the ugly duckling MG Metro 6R4. “Always buy the best example you can afford, especially when

it comes to the body as repairs will be costly and you’re unlikely to recoup the outlay. Go for a ‘matching numbers’ car, one where the chassis and engine numbers match the original paperwork, as a car with the ‘wrong’ engine will never be worth as much,” advises Max, who also points to a growing trend for what’s known as the ‘preservation class’ – cars in good original condition, rather than heavily restored examples. And, he says, if you do buy a car, use it, especially if you see it as an investment. “Use it for two reasons. The first is to have fun – there’s nothing quite like driving a classic convertible on a sunny Sunday morning. But the second reason is just as important. Drive it to events like Goodwood and to club outings where the car becomes an advert for itself. Quite often a fellow enthusiast will see your car and, wrapped up in the spirit of the day, will make a generous offer for it there and then.” Where to look? Probably the best places to start are to two leading UK classic car magazines – Classic and Sports Car and Octane. Both carry page after page of classifieds from private individuals and specialist traders, as well as display ads from the leading classic auction houses like Bonhams, Gooding & Company and RM. But you’ll need to move fast. Another growing trend is the rise in interest in historically fascinating old cars from emerging markets such as Russia, Eastern Europe and especially China. Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines. n

State of the market House prices across the UK will remain stable for 2012, says Marcus Oliver, associate director of Chesterton Humberts’ Hampstead office

L

ast year was a very positive one for many of our clients who continued to achieve record sales and rental prices. Therefore, despite the national predictions for this year, I am confident that the 2012 property market in London will continue to see positive growth. Whilst property prices in many areas of the country experienced stagnation last year, London continued to thrive, with Hampstead and many parts of North West London continuing to prove themselves as property hotspots, experiencing price increases that, in many cases, exceeded both the London and national averages. Given this strong performance, I believe we will see prices continuing to grow throughout 2012, although at a lower predicted rate of around 0.3 per cent occurring in this first quarter of the year, when the market tends to be at its most robust. Places like Hampstead will continue to flourish in 2012 simply because they have so much to offer. The amenities, the culture, restaurants, boutique shops and excellent transport links, all lend themselves to making the area an ideal location for prospective buyers and renters, from professional couples to families. The enduring popularity of the area is proven by the influx of buyers and renters that moved here in 2011, having recognised it as a relative safe haven for property investment, with a greater value per sq ft than some other, more central, London locations. It would be careless to overlook the effect of the current Eurozone crisis in my predictions for the coming year. Of course such uncertainty is likely to impact mortgage and credit markets in 2012, and this will of course test consumer confidence. However, if prices in the capital continue to increase, as I anticipate they will, the London market will weather the storm and emerge unscathed. n www.chestertonhumberts.com
