here can be no doubt that the imminent arrival of June has seen the Diamond Jubilee frenzy gather pace somewhat. As both local and national publications scramble to mark this historic occasion there have been more column inches dedicated to our monarch than ever before. It truly is a once in a lifetime event, and we wish all our readers a wonderful Jubilee weekend, however you might wish to celebrate. In honour of the event, we’ve narrowed down the top three Jubilee-themed afternoon teas that we think it’s worth heading into town for (p. 77), and channelled an especially regal theme in our Interiors Trend (p. 42), as well as covering some of the key Jubilee events happening over the next month in our Culture pages (p. 80). We are also honoured this month to be running an interview with local resident Philip Morrell, whose lovingly restored barge ‘The Spirit of Chartwell’ has been selected as the centerpiece of the Diamond Jubilee Thames Pageant, where it will transport the Queen on an epic journey through London on the Thames. It’s an incredible honour and a wonderful opportunity for a man whose life has seen its fair share of challenge and change; hear his heart-warming story on p. 14. And finally, you can’t get more British than our stunning fashion shoot – a veritable role call of the great and good of the home fashion scene, shot on location at the elegant and exceptional hotel, The Lanesborough. In an exclusive opportunity not usually afforded to the press, the Vantage fashion team enjoyed shooting in the hotel’s impressive suites, while delighting in some truly jaw-dropping gowns and glamour. Marvel at the incredible results on p. 32. Also this month – if Jubilee fever has got a little too much for you – explore our ideas for summer in Paris (p. 92); a pick of the best private island retreats (p. 87); a bathroom with a serious view in New York (p. 85) and a romantic Mozambique hideaway (p. 88). Enjoy the sunshine...!

ROUNDHOUSE 8

The Roundhouse has come a long way since its days as a Victorian engine shed. The founding fathers of punk rock and cutting-edge theatre companies have ensured its reputation as an iconic arts and live music venue, writes Lauren Romano Completed in 1847, the Roundhouse, with its conical slate roof, central smoke louvre, and skeleton of 24 cast-iron columns, enclosing a vast 48 metre diameter arena, is still a magnificent piece of architecture. Designed by Robert Stevenson and Robert B. Dockray during the steam age, the circular structure was originally intended for use as a turntable engine shed, or roundhouse. The introduction of longer trains

however meant that the building became redundant within a decade and was instead put to use as a liquor store. Spirit merchants the Gilbey brothers filled the space with barrels of gin for over 50 years, but the Roundhouse again fell into disuse as the Second World War loomed. The building then stood empty for 25 years until the artistic epiphany of the 1960s dawned and Arnold Wesker’s pioneering Centre 42 Theatre Company took over the premises. A string of influential gigs by Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and The Doors only UK appearance in 1968 ensured the Roundhouse quickly garnered serious cool credentials. By the late 1970s, the punk subculture explosion centred round the venue as bands at the vanguard of the music movement, like the Ramones, flew over from New York to take to the stage; the Sex Pistols even used to practice in the basement. Things then

scene

took a turn for the worse, and from1983 to 1996 the cash-strapped building stood empty, until Torquil Norman of the Norman Trust bought the space and set up the Roundhouse Trust, with figures like Sir Bob Geldof and Monty Python writer Terry Gilliam at the helm. Today’s incarnation of the resilient Grade II* Listed building opened in 2006. New music acts and experimental performing arts companies continue to be a regular fixture, while an innovative and fun annual arts calendar, including the likes of the iTunes Festival and the BBC Electric Proms, ensures the venue has global appeal. This month, for example The World Shakespeare Festival comes to the Roundhouse with a major new cycle of the Bard’s plays produced by everyone from the Royal Shakespeare Company to a Brazilian circus troop.

The Roundhouse is also a registered charity which provides exciting learning opportunities for disadvantaged 11-25 year olds such as sound engineering, visual arts and photography workshops run by eminent professionals. Profits from the venue are ploughed back into the creative programme and the initiative extends to its fantastic restaurant Made in Camden, so visitors can tuck into locally sourced food and drink (including Camden Town brewery beers) safe in the knowledge that their money is being used to support a worthy cause. Over 3,000 individuals benefit from the support scheme annually and over 15,000 opportunities are planned for the next three years. www.roundhouse.org.uk

OTHER HISTORIC MUSIC VENUES IN NORTH WEST LONDON A stalwart for live music, The Forum started life as an art deco cinema. Built in 1934 by cinema magnate Herbert Yapp, the venue is still a well-preserved (if a little tired) example of the striking linear symmetry and elegant simplicity of the period. After a brief spell as a bingo and a dance hall, The Forum became The Town & Country Club in the 1980s and its reputation as an important stage on the music circuit helped attract the likes of The Velvet Underground, Blur, The Pogues and Pixies. Since The MAMA Group took over the music venue in 2007 and splashed out £1.5m on a renovation, The Forum’s London-wide appeal is still flourishing, thanks to consistently strong line-ups of some of the most popular names in music. www.venues.meanfiddler.com/the-forum

The HMV Forum

Wigmore Hall Wigmore Hall has earned a reputation as one of the most renowned chamber music recital venues in the world. With its marble walls and opulent Renaissance style interiors, the Hall is both strikingly grand and reassuringly intimate. Prolific and exemplary programming (over 400 events are presented in a single season) and celebrated acoustics means the venue attracts leading international musicians. Built in 1901 by the German piano firm Bechstein next to its showrooms on Wigmore Street, the entire business was sold to Debenhams in 1916 as Londoners boycotted German firms during the First World War. Today the repertoire of chamber music is balanced with jazz, and Wigmore’s weekly concert broadcasts on the internet through BBC Radio 3 continue to bring the Hall’s music programme to a wider audience. www.wigmore-hall.org.uk

A newer, but by no means less influential music venue on the northwest London block, the Jazz Café opened in December 1990 in the former premises of Barclays Bank. Originally run solely as a live jazz venue, when legends like Lou Donaldson, Horace Andy and Roy Ayers cemented the Jazz Café’s esteemed reputation, over the years the focus has shifted to newer music styles, including soul, funk, reggae, dance and hip-hop. The weekend club nights feature live acts and DJs and draw a younger crowd, while weekday evening gigs offer a more laid back, unpretentious vibe and the music can be enjoyed from the first floor restaurant balcony which overlooks the stage. n www.venues.meanfiddler.com/jazz-cafe

PRIMROSE HILL ENJOYING FINE WINES, TRAPEZE LESSONS AND CUPCAKES

T

he urban village at the foot of leafy Primrose Hill is a vibrant enclave of designer boutiques, neighbourhood pubs and organic cafes, where famous faces and families rub shoulders on any typical weekend. Here’s our guide to where to shop and sip smoothies on Regent’s Park Road and the surrounding streets.

Investing in vintage wines at Bibendum The UK’s leading independent wine merchant Bibendum celebrates its 30th birthday this year and the vast supply of rare bottlings and exciting new tipples continues to grow.

speciality store has been looking after its customers’ wellbeing since the 1970s, and daily vegetarian dishes are offered, alongside the locally sourced foodstuffs, unusual vitamin supplements and every conceivable variety of fine honey. But all that caloriecounting and no cake makes for a dull weekend indeed. Fortunately, the Primrose Bakery is on hand to provide a sugar hit. Its sweet treats are a favourite with customers, including local resident Kate Moss, and for good reason – the gooey chocolate dime bar cupcakes and strawberry layer cake with lashings of rich buttercream are particularly irresistible.

We’re working up a sweat at London’s first outdoors trapeze school Around 1000 different wines from 200 producers in 18 countries fill the Bibendum cellars, so finding something to satisfy even the most particular of palettes should be achievable. If you haven’t found a Father’s Day gift yet, this is an ideal place to start browsing.

We’re getting a health-kick at Yeomans Grocers We swear by the healthy concoctions whizzed up at Yeomans. For a sunny start to the day, the carrot, orange and ginger blend is refreshingly zingy but if you’re feeling adventurous, try the pulverised pear, watercress and spinach blend. The health conscious are equally well-catered for at Sesame Wholefoods. The charming

by ROYAL APPOINTMENT At high water on 3 June, when a million people line the banks of the Thames to witness the greatest flotilla in living history, one man will have more reason than most to be overflowing with pride. Mike Peake meets local resident and founder of Voyages Jules Verne, Philip Morrell

T

he Diamond Jubilee has taken on a real significance for Philip Morrell. For a start, he is the owner of the very boat that Her Majesty will be aboard for the Thames Pageant. Secondly, he knows that the Queen’s patronage on the weekend of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations represents the ultimate seal of approval on a renovation project that has been an £8m labour of love. As the Queen does the waving, the man doing all the smiling will be Philip Morrell, of St John’s Wood, while his Thames barge, The Spirit Of Chartwell, will steal the show. Easily the most eye-catching of all the 1,000 craft in the procession, it will be a riot of gold, purple and crimson, a floating work of art that will enable the Royal family to glide along London’s historic river with all the pomp and ceremony befitting of such a big day. For Philip, a man whose earliest memories of London are of being picked up by the police and taken into care when he was just five years old, it will be the icing on the cake of a glittering career in luxury travel.“As the Spirit Of Chartwell evolved over the past few years, I knew we had something special, something ideal for the carriage of royalty,” he says. Little did he know that such important guests would come knocking so soon. Philip has long had a soft spot for the monarchy, thanks in no small part to a visit by the Duke of Edinburgh to the Barnardo’s home where he spent part of his childhood. It was a generous, moraleboosting gesture which struck a chord with the then 12-year-old, and,

perhaps best explains why Philip volunteered the use of his boat to Her Majesty without charge. At 15, Philip was enrolled by Barnardo’s on a seven-year apprenticeship as a stone mason, during which time he befriended an amiable youth from Spain. He moved in with the boy’s family in north London, started learning a new language, and it wasn’t long before Philip was trying out his Spanish in Spain working as a travel rep, all thoughts of stone masonry left behind. An employee of what would grow into Thomson Holidays, Philip eventually found himself with the responsibility of looking after Lord Thomson himself. “As he got older he was more or less put out to pasture,” says Philip. “I would go round with him to different parts of his empire. I got to know him quite well.” Lord Thomson’s connections gave Philip his ‘lucky break’, and he found a way he could get adventurous globe-trotters into communist China. But with Thomson nervous about moving into such uncharted territories, Philip went his own way, set up an exclusive travel company called Voyages Jules Verne, and on 28 February 1978, his first train to China – The Central Kingdom Express – left London. It was an instant success, and over the 20 next years Philip established himself as a leading light in the growing field of exotic travel. One of his most memorable voyages came in 1983, on the 100th anniversary of the first ever Orient Express train to leave Paris. “I assembled all of the original rolling stock and put on a special

During that trip, he spent time with “I was in Paris when the call came in, talking to Bateaux Mouches Michael Palin, who was writing an article about the journey for Vogue. about the possibility of bringing the boat to the Seine,” says Philip. Not Philip, who was also operating an ‘Around The World In 80 Days’ before a colleague whispered in Philip’s ear that the Queen suddenly adventure at the same time, introduced Palin to BBC producers and the wanted his boat. “I had to spend the rest of the meeting talking Bateaux rest, as they say, is history. Mouches out of it and got the first train back to London.” In 1999, sensing an ill wind for the travel business as the internet Currently in Canary Wharf being dressed for her momentous took hold, Philip sold Voyages Jules Verne to Kuoni. He needed a day, the Spirit Of Chartwell will soon echo the richly-decorated royal new venture. “I wasn’t allowed to compete with Kuoni and nor was I barges of the 17th and 18th centuries. And at 64 metres long she will be going to open a Starbucks; I wanted to do impossible to miss. “Away from the bunting something I knew,” he says. and the funny hats, I really think it will be It is the jewel of the Thames, So he built a ship in Scotland called Lord a spectacle that is truly a once-in-a-lifetime Of The Glens. A matters as ‘bridge clearance heights, tidal second boat followed, and then barely perfect boat for Her Majesty, their ranges and some very detailed calculations three years ago, the company came across about weight,’ Philip is enjoying life in St enquiries kept bringing them back John’s Wood as much as he ever has. “Ever an old Dutch barge for sale called the Van Gogh. “We bought it and were going to do since I moved in with the Spanish family when to the same vessel a traditional European cruise type operation I was young, I wanted to live in Hamilton on the Thames,” Philip says. “But when we Crescent in St John’s Wood,” he says. stripped it, I thought it looked like a train. So we designed it as a train “Eventually, I did, and I now live in a lovely house there. From here, it’s also incredibly easy to get around.” One sumptuous refit later and the Spirit Of Chartwell was born, Hoping to ask the chef of his favourite local restaurant – replete with state cabins, an elegant piano bar and a unique set of L’Aventure in Blenheim Terrace – to be the chef on the royal boat, Philip fixtures and fittings which imbued the boat with an authentic sense of is very much bringing a taste of NW London to the Queen’s big day. It’s turn-of-the-century glamour. It is the jewel of the Thames, and when Philip’s big day, too, of course, as well as his wife, Kim’s – not that she’s the Diamond Jubilee Foundation went looking for the perfect boat for getting in a tizz about it. “She’s pretending not to be to excited,” smiles Her Majesty, their enquiries kept bringing them back to the same vessel. ADDRESS book Kally Ellis Founder and managing director of McQueens

©KevinPlummer

McQueens is the UK florist whose reputation for elegance and innovation continues to flourish. As well as heading the creative team behind the flowers at Vanity Fair’s post-Oscar party in Los Angeles, Kally directs the floral designs at three of London’s destination hotels – The Berkeley, The Connaught, and Claridge’s. This is McQueens’ 21st year in business and what better way to celebrate than with the launch of an integrated retail space, McQueens at Claridge’s? The McQueens headquarters is based in Clerkenwell, with the flower studio and flower school, while Kally lives in Tufnell Park. www.mcqueens.co.uk

OUT & ABOUT

Highgate Cemetery is one of the loveliest corners of London. It’s totally untamed in places, and has this wonderful connection with history. I can see why the Victorians were so obsessed with cemeteries. There’s a peace and tranquility that pervades the place. On a Sunday, I love walking to the top of Parliament Hill with my family and looking out across that heart-stopping panorama. Then we walk down the hill for coffee at Kalendar, a local café.

18

scene

HIDDEN GEM

Waterlow Woods near Highgate is just beautiful. It’s a great place to go walking and a much more manageable destination than Hampstead Heath! And it feels like it has been here forever - it was given to the public by Sir Sydney Waterlow, as “a garden for the gardenless” in 1889. Lauderdale House at the edge of the park has a tea room and hosts functions including weddings, some of which we’ve had the pleasure of installing plenty of fabulous flower creations for.

EATING & DRINKING BREAKFAST Our local, the Tufnell Park Tavern, opens for breakfast – which came in rather handy when we had our kitchen extended recently! During the week I often have working breakfasts at Claridge’s, now we’ve opened a McQueens flower shop within the hotel. And, if the weather is fine, we sometimes have a Saturday brunch at the Modern Pantry in St John’s Square in Clerkenwell. It’s such a lovely spot and you can bask in the sun with a delicious breakfast. Bliss.

THE AREA

I live with my family in Tufnell Park, one street away from the house I was brought up in, and that sense of community is something I treasure. My children go to local schools, so we have an amazing network of friends locally. I travel a lot with business – we often design for parties and events in the USA and Europe – but I love that feeling of coming home. I feel as though I belong here.

LUNCH Lunch is often taken at Cicada in Clerkenwell. It’s a pan-Asian menu and every mouthful tastes fresh with carefully balanced flavours.

DINNER We’re lucky enough to have some excellent gastro pubs on our doorstep. We love The Junction Tavern in Kentish Town, and The Lord Palmerston in Dartmouth Park for a bite to eat in the evenings.

SHOPPING

I think Marylebone High Street has a lot to offer. There’s such a wonderful mixture of designer names, quirky shops and lovely delis. When you’re done, pop into Providores for a glass of wine and some delicious tapas.

With The Special Yoga Centre set for relocation to West Hampstead, a sixth annual art auction was held to raise funds for the renovation of the charity’s new premises. The auction regularly includes works from artists including Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst and this year the aim was to generate over £200,000 for the cause, which offers support to individuals including children with conditions such as cerebral palsy. TV presenters Gaby Roslin and Arlene Phillips were on hand to assist auctioneer Nick Bonham and friends of the charity’s patrons Samantha Cameron and Trudie Styler leant their support. n www.specialyoga.org.uk

We prefer not to be measured by dimensions. Unless it’s a new dimension of accuracy.

No fewer than four exceptional mechanisms enhance the precision of the RICHARD LANGE TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite”: the tiny fusée-and-chain transmission, the delicate tourbillon, the ultra-thin Lange balance spring, and – not least – the patented stop-seconds device for the tourbillon which makes it possible to

set the watch with one-second accuracy in the first place. Never before has an A. Lange & Söhne watch been endowed with so many complications that simultaneously enhance its rate accuracy, settability, and readability. And so, this remarkable timepiece truly deserves the honorary attribute “Pour le Mérite”.

HOUSE OF

DREAMS Fashion house Kenzo’s summer home range is laid-back vibrant and fun

At first glance, these exotic prints could adorn scarves, dresses and silk blazers and they almost do: Kenzo Maison, the homeware extension of the eclectic fashion brand, is closely coupled to its current ready-to-wear offering. The particular similarities between the two lines include an injection of cornflower blue and lemon tones as well as striking Japanese floral prints which fuse authentic and contemporary inspirations. When applied to towels, super soft bed linen and accessories such as cushion covers, the Kenzo look is one which makes us feel refreshed and summery and starts conversations. It’s the perfect alternative to pastels for those looking for a more dramatic finish. n www.harrods.com

Many of the S/S12 preview shows were simultaneously extravagant and elegant, a balance achieved by choosing the most beautiful forms of embellishment. Louis Vuitton layered broderie anglaise, while crystal-encrusted corsets, laser-cut floral cocktail dresses and beaded skirts were part of the Dolce & Gabanna collection which was inspired by 1950s Italia. This is definitely a trend to have fun with, whether one favours classic pearls or show-stopping sequins; it’s simply about selecting frivolous, intricate pieces and freeing them of their evening context. STYLE HIRE

Since the last issue of Vantage went to print, the fashion houses of Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent have announced the appointment of new creative directors. While the former was once mentor to a young Laurent, generations later the houses have chosen designers with quite different signatures. Raf Simons joins Dior from the helm of Jil Sander during a time of sleek, minimalist shapes and bright colour. Whereas, Hedi Slimane is thought the perfect person to reinvigorate a romantic and feminine YSL vision.

BEHIND THE SCENES AGNÈS B GOES ARTHOUSE

Following the success of its pop-up shop in New Cavendish Street, Agnès b. has very recently launched a new concept store on Marylebone High Street and Vantage went to witness the preparations. The boutique stocks the men’s and women’s collections alongside luggage, handbags and a range for infants, all of which are set amongst specially chosen artworks. GIULIA MARESCA New luxury accessories label Lemaresca is one to watch, says Gabrielle Lane

W

hile the fashion industry can seem to churn out new ‘it-brands’ on a daily basis, a tip-off, away from work and over a glass of wine, led me to Giulia Maresca, who, together with her sister Cecilia, has set up an eponymous accessories label. The brand epitomises Italian luxury – sleek shapes, enviable quality and details such as spiky hardware and eye-catching prints, incorporated as part of both handbags and cuffs. And while talent is a prerequisite, these women have impressive industry credentials too. “I have been head handbag designer for many fashion brands including Tod’s and Christian Louboutin,” Giulia explains. “My sister Cecilia has worked as head of PR for Vivienne Westwood, and Annoushka amongst others, so the two of us complement each other professionally and in terms of style: I am more traditional and my sister more contemporary and edgy. Having both worked for other brands and designers for a long time, we decided it was about time to start our own label.” Pieces such as the calf-skin Karla bag in black have already been spotted on the arms of fashion week attendees and Lemaresca has really tapped into the trend of the moment for all things bespoke, with many customers opting to have their own initials applied in crystals (showy, but somehow very stylish). Giulia explains that a forthcoming London store will have an area dedicated entirely to commissioned designs. “We are planning to keep working on strengthening our network of private clients as we really appreciate the personal contact and direct feedback,” she says. Lemaresca recently produced pieces at the request of Osman Yousefzada, the quirky British designer who asked for bags which shared a vision of colour and opulence and duly sent them down his A/W12-13 catwalk in London. “We immediately got on,” Giulia reveals. “He’s a great, hard-working designer who is amazingly skilled at tailoring and embroidery. We created a few statement pieces that got a great feedback.” Leaving the security of backers such as Christian Louboutin has undoubtedly led to a wave of expectation for Lemaresca but Giulia is matter-of-fact about it. “I’m flattered; I will just try to do what I do best and hopefully will see good results.” n

lofty IDEAS The renovation of Grade I listed St Pancras Chambers in NW1 has breathed new life into this iconic London landmark. Renowned architect and design company Manhattan Loft Corporation takes Emma Johnson through the dramatic results

I

n 2005 Manhattan Loft Corporation embarked on the mammoth multi-award winning project to restore and refurbish the site of the former Midland Grand Hotel, known as St. Pancras Chambers, located on Euston Road, NW1. The Grade I Listed, high Victorian Gothic spectacle was originally designed and built by Sir George Gilbert Scott and considered to be his most successful project. Today, this towering architectural wonder houses sixty-seven apartments and the acclaimed five-star St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel. Conversions of the original state rooms, with period details retained and refurbished, make up the apartments on the second and third floors, while duplex and triplex apartments with double height space and a more contemporary finish are on the fourth, fifth and sixth floors. The majestic, Victorian corridors and original residential staircase have also been

refurbished. One apartment of particular note has been developed in the clock tower, a triplex which contains the original iron staircase that climbs the exposed brick wall to the clock just above the ceiling with the original watchmaker’s hut still being found at the top of the stairs. Harry Handelsman, CEO of Manhattan Loft Corporation, celebrates the 20th anniversary of his property company this year, which, since its foundation in 1992, has become universally recognised as the pioneer of Manhattan-style loft living in London. His innovative approach to development prioritises outstanding design above all, boldly challenging preconceptions rather than following trends, and has won him the highest praise from contemporaries within the industry. www.manhattanloft.co.uk

get the look... THE MAY FAIR

THE MAY FAIR

As the general manager of The May Fair, Anthony Lee, explains: “The hotel offers guests an exciting and memorable experience.” Therefore its 45 suites are constantly being updated – they offer access to unique and indulgent services across hundreds of square metres and look fantastic thanks to the incorporation of lavish artwork, bespoke furniture and high-spec finishes including Sicilian marble. In particular, each design uses bold colour statements, with the latest addition the dramatic gold and black Ebony suite.

48

THE EBONY SUITE

At first glance the Ebony suite is an extravagant mass of sleek lines, dark woods and metallic accents. However, it is the integrated technology which really sets it apart, starting with a 52” flat screen TV and going right through to the bathroom, where luxury Japanese specialists TOTO have ensured there’s every conceivable luxury. From sinks which change colour with the increase in water temperature, to massaging shower jets and an illuminated bath, everything thas been thought about. www.themayfairhotel.co.uk

JEWELS FOR HOPE

With Baselworld finished in March, the jewellery world did not have to wait long before another important event was ticked off its calendar. Jewels for Hope, the sale of Lily Safra’s astounding collection of jewels for charitable institutions, recently took place in Geneva on 14 May. Including fine antique and period jewellery, as well as significant diamonds, rubies and sapphire pieces, in among Mrs Safra’s jewels were 18 pieces by JAR – totalling the largest private assortment of the Parisian jeweller’s creations ever to be offered at auction. Our favourite piece in the collection is the ruby and diamond Camellia flower brooch by the renowned Parisian jeweller; made in 2003, it is an astonishing piece of craftsmanship.

EXPERT OPINION Jewellery designer Pippa Small

The latest collection is inspired by nature: by the joys and celebration of flowers but also a reminder of their impermanence. My favourite piece is a lovely, delicate, articulated cluster of flowers cut from blushing shades of pink tourmaline, framed in gold that hangs as a necklace. All the flowers are different and inspired by my love of plants. I believe stones have powers. We know instinctively if a gem makes us feel strong, more confident, comforted or safe. Memories are encased in jewels that have been passed down from those we have known and loved, making them more precious. Turquoise Mountain is a foundation that was set up by Rory Stewart to help preserve and restore traditional craft and architecture in Kabul. I have loved every moment I’ve spent there and have learnt so much about the people and their tragic, complex situation. My plans for the future? To continue collaborating with different communities around the world, to open a shop in New York and, shortly, to become a mother!

WATCH news TENNIS TIME

The collaboration between Richard Mille and Rafael Nadal is working well. The watchmaker has gained one of the world’s most famous sportsmen as an ambassador, while the tennis player has acquired what seems to be a lucky charm – since modelling the RM027, Nadal has won eight consecutive ATP Masters titles. The most recent victory, the ATP Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo, saw him defeat world number one Novak Djokovic in just one hour and 18 minutes. Shock resistant, and therefore able to resist Nadal’s powerful approach to the game, the RM 027 is the lightest mechanical watch ever produced. www.richardmille.com

BIG BANG FERRARI

Vantage was in Italy last November with Ferrari and Hublot when the pair announced the partnership that made the Swiss watchmaking brand the Italian manufacturer’s exclusive watch partner. Four months later, we joined the duo in Switzerland when they unveiled their first joint collaboration: the Big Bang Ferrari. With an indexed crown reminiscent of a wheel rim, elongated push buttons fixed along a rotating axis

like the pedals in a car and the legendary prancing horse featured in relief at nine o’clock, Ferrari’s influence on the watch is unmistakable. Limited editions of the Big Bang Ferrari were formally unveiled in China at the opening of the Shanghai F1 Grand Prix this spring and we expect the pieces to become collectors’ items within years. www.hublot.com

MASTERING TIME on the track One watch brand has become more synonymous with motorsport than any other. Stretching from Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna through Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard to Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, TAG Heuer’s roster of racing ambassadors reads like a Who’s Who of motor-racing fame. Richard Brown speaks to Jack Heuer, TAG Heuer’s Honorary Chairman

‘‘ T

his is something I have never really understood,” Jack Heuer says of the Monaco, one of the two timepieces responsible for catapulting TAG Heuer to the top of the fine watch industry. “We had tried to make something totally different, something unlike we had ever produced before.” TAG’s Heuer’s Honorary Chairman – the great grandson of Edouard Heuer, the man who founded the company – is talking just weeks before his impending retirement at the age of 80, reflecting on a career that has spanned six decades and one that has helped to launch some of TAG Heuer’s most iconic watches – including the Monaco. “The case manufacturer had obtained a patent on a new way to make a square watchcase waterproof, so we were able to play with the design,” Heuer explains. “However, what we came to produce proved to be too avant-garde; when it was first released [in 1969], the Monaco was bought only by architects and designers.” So unpopular was the watch, in fact, that within seven years it had phased itself out of the market. Luckily for TAG, a movie-maker named Steve McQueen was about do for the Monaco what no marketing manager ever could. Preparing for his upcoming cinematic homage to the world’s most famous endurance race, Le Mans, Hollywood’s King of Cool approached Grand Prix champion Jo Siffert for advice. For the sake of authenticity, Siffert told McQueen to wear his own racing suit and Heuer’s Autavia wristwatch. McQueen took the suit, but rather than the Autavia, it was the Monaco that he strapped to his arm. From the cockpit of McQueen’s Porsche 917 Gulf, the status of the Monaco proliferated, quickly becoming the racing circuit’s most glamorous accessory. But while the watch’s popularity burgeoned under McQueen’s endorsement, at the time, the film industry’s highest paid actor was never under contract with the company. “We were not keen to align his image with our brand,” says Heuer. “He was a fantastic actor but from the late 60s he started to take drugs and drink too much. He was no longer a role model we could work with.” Two decades later, however, and TAG Heuer had come to realise the marketing appeal of a man who had passed into movie history as one of its most celebrated stars. When the Monaco was relaunched in 1998, it was McQueen who stood as the campaign’s obvious poster boy. “They [TAG Heuer] made an agreement with the son of McQueen for the rights to his name,” explains Jack. “Then they got hold of this fantastic picture of Steve wearing the Monaco in the film. By then the world remembered only the good sides of Steve McQueen and when the

collection

5,000 pieces were released, they sold in a relatively short space of time. Today the Monaco remains a fundamental piece in our collection.” Fundamental as it may be, it’s not Jack’s favourite. That comes in the form of TAG’s other most famous creation: the Carrera. Now accounting for a third of TAG Heuer’s overall sales, the original Carrera was launched back in 1963. Taking its name from the Carrera Pan Americana, a legendary five-day endurance race across Mexico, and designed with the needs of motor-racing enthusiasts in mind, the watch was a clean, uncluttered piece that featured a wide-open, easy-to-read dial and a shock-resistant, waterproof case. During the nine year contract TAG Heuer had with Ferrari in the 70s, Jack would present every Ferrari driver with an 18-carat gold edition of the watch. Engraved on the back with the driver’s name and blood group, the 50 that were produced now sit near the top of every serious watch collector’s wish list. For Jack, the watch has come to resonate on far more than an aesthetic level. “I have many experiences related to that watch,” he tells me. “On one occasion, I met Villeneuve’s wife [Gilles Villeneuve had driven for Ferrari from 1978 until his death at Belgian Grand Prix in 1982], when their son [Jacques] was racing Formula One in Monaco. The son had chartered a big boat and was giving a reception there. Mrs Villeneuve greeted me on the top deck. She said ‘Oh, hello Mr Heuer. You know, I still have the watch you gave my husband. I wear it all the time.’ I got very emotional and nearly cried. Some of the best years of my career were somehow related to these watches.” Only fitting, then, that Mr Heuer should exit the company by designing a Carrera, “the way I really wanted to see it.” The result is a slimmer, lighter version of the watch that remains his favourite. “We made it 100 metres waterproof, instead of 300 metres, which meant we could use crystal glass half a millimetre less thick. I asked for a flatter movement and a lot of internal

62

details like that. Then I put my signature and our family crest on the back.” The end product, Jack Heuer’s 80th Birthday Edition Carrera, will be limited to 3,000 pieces. Or, more accurately, 3,000 minus the four that Jack is keeping for himself and his three children. The other 2,996 watches, not unsurprisingly, have already been sold. Born in 1932, Heuer grew up in a family obsessed with motorsport; his grandfather, “a car nut”, owned only the fourth automobile in the state of Bern. Jack himself has distinct memories of watching the Swiss aristocracy testing their cars on the country’s alpine roads. When hill climbing became a popular Swiss motorsport, it was his greatgrandfather’s company that provided the devices used to time the races. After the end of the Second World War, Heuer (as the company was then known) became involved with rally racing, before progressing into GT and from GT into Formula One – a sphere that would provide the company with associations to some of sports’ biggest names. Siffert, Regazzoni, Ickx, Lauda, Prost, Senna, Häkkinen, Villeneuve: over the last half century, TAG Heuer has assembled an incomparable roster of racing ambassadors to endorse their timepieces. “We are very choosy about our ambassadors; their characteristics must represent the values of our brand,” says Heuer. “For us, that means honesty, integrity, a sporty attitude and a clean history. We sit down with all of them for talks and each must come to our factory to learn about the brand they are representing.” Those who have taken the tour more recently include Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, ambassadors who have successfully carried the brand into the 21st century by adding their names to the F1 Champions’ hall of fame. If TAG Heuer’s continued commitment to motorsport is one thing that has remained a constant during the last 50 years, what in the watch world has changed? “In the 1960s, Switzerland produced about 25 per cent of the world’s watches,” says Heuer. “By the 1990s we produced about 2.5 per cent. Partly this is due to the low priced quartz watches. Switzerland has been transformed from a mass-producing watch country to a country producing a smaller number of high-end watches for the luxury industry. The country is still in the process of adapting.” There’s been another change that intrigues Mr Heuer; that a watch no longer exists to make sure you’re on time. “Now,” he muses, “it’s more to show you who you are. For 25 years I would get complaints from clients all over the world if my watch was more than a minute a week off. Today, nobody ever questions how accurate the watch is. They are used to turning on the news and changing their watch to the time it says on the screen. It doesn’t seem to bother anybody anymore.” Except for TAG Heuer, that is. To this company, precision timing is the basis on which the brand was built. It still hold the record for accurately timing the closest finish in the whole of motor racing history – when Mattias Ekström beat Heikki Kovalainen in the 2006 Race of Champions by 2/10,000ths of a second – and it’s not an accolade the team plans on giving up. Having astonished the world in January with the Mikrogirder, a chronograph capable of recording 5/10,000ths of a second, Jack Heuer assures us that the company founded by his great grandfather will “continue to challenge the classical way of making a watch,” with or without him at the helm. n For stockists, call 0800 037 9658 or visit www.tagheuer.com

Facing the Pain Consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeons at The Wellington Hospital, Luke Cascarini and Manolis Heliotis discuss the treatments available for painful and clicking jaw joints but can interfere with our normal quality of life – even making it difficult to eat and drink. If this is the case, it is definitely worth seeking a specialist’s opinion. CAUSES Patients who have clicking and locking in the jaw joint usually have some degree of internal derangement, meaning the complex movement of the jaw condyle, and the disc which sits on top of it, becomes deranged and often is quite displaced, causing the jaw to lock or click. TREATMENT If the disc is displaced and will not return to normal movements, and the movement is restricted or painful, often all that is required is for the adhesions, which are preventing the disc from returning to its normal position, to be broken down. This can be achieved through an arthroscopy and arthrocentesis. In this simple procedure a tiny scope is put inside the joint, allowing a surgeon examine the displaced disc more closely without damaging the joint itself, and ensuring it leaves only the tiniest marks on the skin, which makes it a good choice for those who may be worried about any scarring. MANAGEMENT In cases of muscle pain around the face without locking inside the joint, conservative treatments such as physiotherapy or osteopathy should be all that is required. On occasions the wearing of a special splint over your teeth can also help. Be aware that with this condition, sometimes it can take Mr Heliotis and Mr Cascarini are both a while to find the Consultant Maxillofacial & Oral Surgeons right conservative in the N.W. quarter of people will suffer problems with their jaw joints at some point in their life. For many people it can be directly related to stress, which sees patients clenching their jaw and grinding their teeth, often at night, and then waking in the morning with headaches and facial pain. In some cases, this pain settles down after the stressful period has passed and you may not require expert advice. However, for many, the clicking and jaw locking continues, which is not only very painful,

BACKSTAGE beauty THE NEW BLACK Dramatic and dark make-up is typically an Autumn/ Winter beauty fixture, but the abundance of sequins and sharp prints in the Gucci S/S12 collection gave make-up artist Pat McGrath a license to unveil what she described as a tougher and more modern take on the smoky eye. As you can see, the look is certainly a show-stopper with eye shadow blended into the socket line and beyond. The Marios Schwab, Jonathan Saunders and Alexander Wang teams also adopted lashings of eye liner but left lids bare for a more wearable finish.

RECREATE THE LOOK 1. Create a natural base using a matte foundation. 2. Apply a dark shadow across the eyelid and blend outward: adding shimmer to the inner corner will make the effect more glamorous and less stark. 3. Apply eye liner to the bottom lash line.

WAITING LIST

All hail creative director of YSL beauty, Lloyd Simmonds who has overseen the creation of a foundation deserving of the Touche Éclat name. It was just recently that the iconic illuminating pen marked its 20th anniversary with a limited edition casing and Simmonds wanted to capture the essence of the popular brightening fluid in a feather light base product. Lengthy trials were undertaken to find a formulation which would help the wearer ‘exude Parisian elegance’ and obtain a dewy, soft finish without shine. The result, Le Teint Touche Éclat, incorporates moisturising agents and oils to soothe the skin and even the complexion. It is said that the two products will work well in combination, with the Touche Éclat pen enhancing radiance futher. The foundation launches in time for the summer season and will be available in 22 shades from the end of June in Selfridges and nationwide from July. UPDATE YOUR ROUTINE

LATEST LAUNCHES 1. Even Better Skin Tone Correcting Lotion Spf 20

1. Get your skin in tip-top condition! Revive sluggish winter skin with a specialist facial; opt for a deep cleansing treatment that involves steam, extraction and lymphatic drainage massage or, if you have regular facials, go for something more advanced such as microdermabrasion. Following a good facial, your skin will be in optimum condition, allowing products to penetrate more deeply. Swap heavy winter skin care products such as intensive moisturisers with lighter hydrating fluids and be sure to use a daily SPF.

If you’ve not yet scheduled a skincare evaluation at a Clinique counter – it’s most definitely worth it. Once you’ve been typed and colour matched your beauty routine reaches new heights of effectiveness. Look out for this brightening lotion which simultaneously evens skin tone, it’s perfect for summer as it contains UVA/UVB protection and is ideal for oilier complexions.

2. Opus Vi Eu De Parfum This woody, amber fragrance is the latest concoction from the exotic perfumery of Amouage – a house which combines inspirations from Oman with the expertise of French creatives. This is a sexy and sophisticated scent which fuses leather and citrus undertones with frankincense and peppery essences.

Replace heavy, full coverage foundations with tinted moisturisers or sheer foundations. Summer skin needs to look dewy and radiant so swap powdery products with crème formulations. Use crème blushers and radiance-enhancing products.

Defined brows make a considerable difference, opening up the eyes and framing the face. Keep eyebrows groomed with regular threading sessions. An expert will give you precise definition and avoid a tendency to over pluck and end up with two different brow shapes. Fill in any gaps with a brow powder and keep them in place with a brow shaping gel. If you have fair hair opt for a lash and brow tint for added definition. in GOOD company If you can’t escape to the country this weekend, schedule a visit to the Baglioni Spa by SPC

I

f your mid-week diary has been known to feature The Rose Club, One Blenheim Terrace and other London favourites, but your most treasured weekends are those spent in more rural surroundings, you might already have visited the Baglioni Hotel. Or else, you certainly should. The spa is run by the SPC team, a British skincare brand which owes its origins to the stately gardens at Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire, and uses ingredients plucked from the kitchen and orchard to soothe, buff and energise the face and body. The treatments were devised by its own award-winning spa and include conditioning wraps layered with white chocolate, lavender and chamomile, as well as either aromatherapy or volcanic stone massage, facials and mani/ pedicures. Men are advised to book a Warm Citrus Ritual which uses deep tissue and therapeutic techniques to relieve tension and muscle pain, or a re-energising facial which improves visible muscle tone and reduces signs of tiredness. The London spa is in keeping with the smart and sophisticated style of the Baglioni

68

Hotel owing to its modern art, rich woods and metallic accents which make it feel very grand and luxurious. It is a small space, but the cosiness is attractive and the changing area has an integrated steam room which guests can use before their appointment. The expertise of the therapists at the Baglioni Hotel has garnered a real following among locals and industry insiders alike and touches such as velvet armchairs, flowers and candlesticks throughout also give the spa a relaxing vibe – which is refreshingly lovely, as well as surprising, in an age of stark white minimalism and high-tech gadgetry. The towels are super soft, there are complimentary SPC body products in the changing areas and treatments are easily tailored to fulfil individual requirements with magnificent results. The spa is ideal for a spot of light pampering, perhaps post shopping on Kensington High Street before a lunch of delicious Mediterranean cuisine in the Brunello Restaurant. n www.baglionihotels.com

Scenery is key to creating an authentic experience and the calming scents of vanilla, coconut and frangipani pervade throughout, while a warm water pillow ensures comfort. The treatment commences with a foot bath infused with algae before the body is exfoliated using a melting combination of sand, sea salt and coconut. With skin unbelievably soft, a sculpting massage using tuipanos or hand-made poultices is used to awaken the senses and release tension. Finally, Polynesia Sacred Oil is applied to leave skin radiant.

Playing Safe Matthew Sala, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at The Wellington Hospital, discusses the injuries polo players are susceptible to and prevention methods which reduce the risk

P

olo is one of the world’s oldest equestrian sports, described in the Orient well over 2,500 years ago and subsequently in China, Japan and India, where it was discovered and popularised by the British in the 1850s. Today, it remains one of our most iconic sports, much-loved and played by the royals and their associates, as well as being a staple part of a Londoner’s summer diary. The forces at play in polo are formidable, as horses may weigh up to 500kg and gallop at speeds approaching 65km/h. The incidence of injuries during high goal polo is 7.8 per 1000 player game hours. Although this is in fact lower than some other sports such as football (16.7 /1000hrs) rugby (44.9), and ice hockey (78.4), the percentage of severe injuries is higher at 64 per cent. Acute injuries are most commonly caused by falls, but also from balls travelling at high speed, mallets and collisions; and falling from or under a horse at high speed can certainly be very dramatic. Some 39 per cent of injuries occur in the arms, 31 per cent in the legs, 19 per cent to the head, six per cent to the face and five per cent in the back. Fractures account for 39 per cent of injuries, mostly from a fall from the horse. Arm and knee ligament and tendon ruptures can occur. In a group of professional players studied in Argentina, only seven out of 55 players reported no injury over the preceding five year period. A review of polo injuries published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine recently concluded that: “The use of a helmet with a face protector is recommended...a doctor experienced in the management of serious trauma should be present at all polo matches”. Falling off the horse, protecting one’s self with outstretched arms, is the usual mechanism for arm injury. Fractures and dislocations of the shoulder, including those of the collar bone and acromio-clavicular joint (at the end of the collar bone) are common. In addition to this, we see degenerative conditions from years of play, including epichondylitis (golfer’s elbow); shoulder rotator cuff tears; and eventually, arthritis of the shoulder and elbow. I regularly see polo players with acute, as well as chronic, shoulder and elbow injuries in my own practice. One of the problems we see in the ‘polo shoulder’ is rotator cuff impingement; this can give rise to progressive pain, typically at the side of the shoulder, when elevating the arm above shoulder height or behind the back; insidious at first but later becoming severe and debilitating. The tendon becomes frayed and if left untreated a tendon tear can occur. Progressive damage can also cause loss of arm elevation strength. Problems can also result from an incorrect pattern of movement of the shoulder blade on the chest wall, during high elevation and rapid arm motion.

PREVENTING INJURY Professional and leisure polo players are likely to spend hours practising their stroke, stick and ball practice, even on a wooden horse; but rarely have I known players to go through a warm-up routine, let alone sport specific exercise training. Prevention is effective; especially of injury caused by repetitive overuse. TOP TIPS: •

Stretching: It is important to maintain good shoulder and hip flexibility (range of motion) this improves stroke potential, reach, and reduces the risk of hamstring strain and internal shoulder injury

Shoulder, back, hip and knee conditioning exercise. This will not only help avoid injury from overuse but it will enhance performance and help to avoid fatigue

Specific theraband and free weight exercise to strengthen shoulder rotators

Develop good quadriceps and hamstring tone

Maintain good core strength and spinal posture

Use a helmet with face protector and properly fitted knee and (ideally) elbow protection

Organic Wheat Dried Pasta For a planned meal or to fill a gap when the kids are home from university, this is a musthave! Even the kids can sweat off some onion and garlic in loads of good quality olive oil, throw in some mushrooms, a little chilli and peppers for a really tasty, inexpensive and satisfying meal. With a glass of a decent Italian wine this meal is a good as it needs to be anytime!

Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar A really good extra olive oil and a bottle of balsamic vinegar is essential for a decent salad dressing, and the extra virgin olive oil is ideal for drizzling over spanish pan con tomato - crusty bread, lightly toasted then rubbed with a garlic clove, fresh tomato and a pinch of coarse salt crystals.

Sausages Owning a butchers shop means great quality meats through the week, but as a family we love homemade sausages as much as any fine cut! We eat them with Bim’s Spicy African Ketchup – so good it has replaced the market leading tomato ketchup as our sauce of choice! www.hampsteadbutcher.com

wine SPANISH INSPIRATION Fernando Gonzalez, wine adviser at Marylebone restaurant Iberica, says there is a lot more to Spanish wine than Rioja, and suggests some of his favourite whites

S

pain produces some excellent wines – both whites and reds, and it is essential for me that at Iberica we have an entirely Spanish wine list that features small, independent producers from all over Spain, and not just the classic red Riojas which have become synonymous with Spanish wine. We work directly with producers who don’t export, to showcase these excellent little-known wines here in London. Much of our wine list is made up of wines that are exclusive to Iberica outside of Spain. Spanish white wines aren’t as well known here, which is a shame as Spain produces world class white wines. Viura, a native white grape from Rioja, can produce a wide range of wine styles. From easy drinking, light and fresh wine, such as Valdemar Viura 2011, Bodegas Valdemar, to an aged, developed and richer style like Vina Gravonia 2002, Bodegas Vina Tondonia. If you go further southwest from Rioja, you can find Rueda, one of the trendiest regions for white wine in Spain. The grape variety is called ‘Verdejo’. It makes expressive and herbaceous wines that are very fresh on the palate. Marques de Riscal Finca Montico 2011 or V3 Verdejo 2006 are excellent examples. It would be remiss to write about Spanish white wines without mentioning Albarino. Rias Baixas, in the northwest coast of Spain, is home to this high quality grape. Albarino is a grape that gives wines an aromatic floral base, often with exotic fruit character too. Fillaboa 2011 embodies all the best characteristics of this grape. It is believed that Albarino might have been an ancient clone of German Riesling and it was taken to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia by German monks on their way to Santiago Cathedral. Some of the best examples of Albarino that I have come across, such as Palacio de Fefinanes 1583 (2007), Pazo de Senorans 2002, Do Ferreiro Ceps Vellas - have petrol and truffle-like aromas that remind me of developed Rieslings. www.ibericalondon.co.uk

A VERY

FRENCH AF Boasting a café, charcuterie, food store, bar and great restaurant, Villandry brings a wonderful local French flavour to NW, says Emma Johnson

B

ought by its new owners (managing director Philippe Le Roux and creative director Clare Sheppard of Le Pain Quotidien fame) at the end of April last year, Villandry is now starting to feel like very much a local institution. Clare and Philippe planned to slowly make over the restaurant into a light, bright space offering elegant dining options, a casual bar and café, exclusive retail space and an eclectic mix of modern Mediterranean specialities. The huge green awning and two storey windows that greet you from the pavement mean they’ve certainly achieved the first of their aims; and inside, the open shop is packed full of divine produce, accompanied by a buzzing café and fresh, rustic décor that feels welcoming and confident. So what about the food? In a city whose restaurant credentials have sky rocketed in recent years – with a host of some of the most cutting edge chefs and restaurants choosing London as their new base – Villandry’s bravery lies in its commitment to a more classic, traditional approach. While the menu is modern, and focuses on a lighter, southern style of cooking, there are all the classics you know and love, and would expect to find at a restaurant such as this. And this is why Villandry works, it sets out to be a certain kind of place, and it is just that. We enjoyed a perfectly executed smoked duck salad with chicory, walnut and beetroot dressing and salt and pepper squid with tartare sauce for our starters. Main courses came in the form of a 28 day dry-aged Galloway 8oz fillet – succulent and tasty, served with some exemplary béarnaise, as well as wonderful lamb cutlets, served pink and juicy, with a unique side serving of chips tossed in Parmesan and white truffle oil

– the truffle and moreish cheese making for a heady mix. Washed down with a Gamay de Touraine, Domaine Marionnet, 2009, from their accomplished wine list, it was the perfect mid-week supper – relaxed and delicious. During the day, the bar and café offer everything from small plates of parfait, roasted peppers, salads, cheeses and prawns, as well as larger dishes such as burgers, roasted chicken, soups and sandwiches. The bar is open throughout the day and evening and is the perfect place to stop for a pre-dinner drink or a mid-shopping sit down! On our way out we lingered in the food store, marvelling at the beautiful breads (rather too much of which we’d enjoyed earlier before our meal), along with the kind of sweets and pastry display which would send any chocoholic crazy. Cakes, tarts, brownies, biscuits, meringues and artisanal French and English chocolate showcased a kitchen team with considerable talent, while the selection of drinks, teas, coffee beans and French ingredients available indicated a buyer with reassuring tendencies towards gastronomic excellence. Quality and tradition run throughout this place, the food is good, the style is contemporary and it feels – unlike some of its flash-in-the-pan peers – that it’s here to stay. Which is very good news for North West London. 170 Great Portland Street, W1W 5QB www.villandry.com

KARAM SETHI TRISHNA, W1 Karam Sethi, head chef at local favourite Trishna, shares the perfect exotic dish to impress friends on summer evenings

‘‘

COASTAL SPICED GUINEA FOWL WITH A MASOOR LENTIL SALSA

This is the perfect dish to put in the middle of the table and share with friends. The smoky, robust flavours of the spices work well with the flavour of the bird. It’s simple to make, so ideal for entertaining, but still results in really complex flavours. The same marinade can also be used to roast a whole guinea fowl, if you want to serve a larger party, which can then be slowly oven-roasted or spatchcocked and cooked over coals or a barbeque.

Serves two as a main meal, or four as a sharing dish INGREDIENTS 400g skinless boned guinea fowl leg cut, into 4inch cubes 10g fennel seeds 4 cloves 2g whole dried Kashmiri chilli 1 star anise ½ tsp salt 2 tsp Greek yoghurt 2 tsp ginger and garlic paste 1 tbsp mustard oil 2 tsp lemon juice Melted butter, to finish

’’

• • • • • • • • • • •

MASOOR LENTIL SALSA 10 tbsp Masoor lentils ½ a diced red onion 1 diced tomato, seeds removed 2 tsp chopped green chilli 1 tsbp grated ginger 1 ½ tsp salt 2 tsbp mustard oil 2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander leaves

• • • • • • • •

PREPARE Firstly, coat the guinea fowl in the lemon juice, salt and ginger and garlic paste and leave aside. MARINADE To make the spice marinade, toast the star anise, kashmiri chilli, cloves and fennel seeds in a pan until fragrant, but not burned. Remove the spices from the pan and allow them to cool. Grind these in your spice grinder (a coffee grinder works perfectly, or a pestle and mortar at a push) to a fine powder. Combine the mustard oil, yoghurt, spice powder and salt in a bowl to form a smooth paste. Apply to the guinea fowl pieces. SALSA Soak the lentils in cold water for one hour, then cook the lentils by placing them in salted boiling water for 10 minutes on a high flame.

The lentils should be cooked al dente. Drain the lentils and cool. Combine all the other ingredients with the lentils, and set aside. COOK Roast the guinea fowl in the oven for 12 minutes on 200 degrees. Remove from the oven and leave to rest under foil for the same period of time. Baste the cooked meat with a little melted butter before serving with the lentil salsa. n

THE COURTESAN’S BOUDOIR

n its 150th anniversary year, five-star hotel The Grosvenor has unveiled a glamorous suite dedicated to one of its most flamboyant guests. Cora Pearl was an infamous seductress, synonymous with the hedonism of 19th century France and a supposed lover of Prince Napoleon, cousin of Napolean III. While Cora was once ejected from the hotel during a visit to Victorian London, biographer Katie Hickman has collaborated with the design team to ensure the opulent suite serves as a lasting reflection of its muse. Enormous chandeliers crown both the bed and a freestanding infinity bath tub which is set on its own elevated platform, while furniture, including an elaborate chaise longue, is finished in silver, and dressing tables are styled with pearls and flowers with champagne, truffles and strawberries dipped in chocolate, all within reach. As part of an indulgent two night package guests are greeted upon arrival in the executive lounge with a choice of refreshment, before being

taken through to the suite and spending a relaxing afternoon at leisure. The suite’s signature cocktail, currently nominated for an industry award, is served in the hotel’s glimmering, velvet-clad Reunion Bar before dinner which is presented in the form of a decadent seven-course Emperor’s feast at the Grand Imperial restaurant. When Vantage visited, the Cantonese fine dining selection was expertly chosen by charming waiter Stephen and included King Prawns with wasabi crème, hoi sin duck pancakes, tender beef marinated for 24 hours and crème brulee infused with green tea. A rose petal bath prepared by a butler awaits back in the suite, and strawberries and champagne are provided for breakfast the next morning. BOTH WORLDS See the best that Northern Mozambique has to offer, by combining both the cultural experience of the mainland coast with the delights of a private island stay, says Annabel Goldie-Morrison

N

orthern Mozambique remains wild, beautiful and untamed, and, although getting around takes time, the coastal panoramas, sense of space and adventure, not to mention some of Africa’s most idyllic lodges, makes the journey well worthwhile. Along the coast, lapped by the Indian Ocean, is an endless succession of unspoilt beaches and islands, plus the UNESCO World Heritage site at Ilha de Moçambique. Flying into Nampula, followed by an easy couple of hours on tarmac to Ilha de Moçambique and a 15 minute boat ride, we arrived at Coral Lodge 15.41. Coral Lodge 15.41 – the numbers represent the latitude and longitude – is the epitome of barefoot luxury. The lodge is situated at the end of a sandy spit at the tip of the Varanda nature reserve, the only property for miles, and this location affords it a degree of exclusivity not enjoyed by other beach resorts. The ten thatch-roofed guest villas each have sitting areas, a bedroom, bathroom and a spacious terrace. Built on top of the dunes to make the most of the views and the constant Indian Ocean breeze, half of the villas line the beach on one side and the other half overlook the mangrove lagoon and Ilha de Mozambique on the other side. The decor is contemporary and unfussy, a blend of African and modern European style. Colourful textiles incorporate the colours of the surrounding environment, and furniture is speckled coconut from Zanzibar, alongside African carvings and masks, and oversized Moroccan lights. The food at Coral Lodge is worthy of any fine urban restaurant, and we enjoyed the bounty of the Indian Ocean in the form of fish tempura, lobster kebabs and poached barracuda in banana leaves. The breakfast platter of fresh fruit, pastries and cheese looked too good to eat, but we managed not to let that hold us back! A great experience for foodies is to visit the local market with the chef before coming back to the lodge to learn how to cook a delicious meal using the produce from the market.

Due to its unique location, there are plenty of varied activities on offer at Coral Lodge. On a couple of days we opted to stay on the property and enjoyed lounging by the infinity pool, drink in hand. The spa looks out over the lagoon, and treatments are administered by local women trained by the lodge. I enjoyed the traditional Musiro face mask, which helps to protect skin from the sun. For keen scuba divers there’s an instructor on site, but even when snorkelling we were still able see the local shipwrecks lying in their shallow watery graves. You can also snorkel in the lagoon just yards from the lodge – great for beginners and children as it’s extremely safe – and see the reefs and amazing array of juvenile tropical fish in waist-height water. In an energetic moment, we paddled canoes around the mangroves, admiring the birdlife around us, and the marine life swimming beneath. We also took a ten minute boat trip to Ilha de Mocambique, the only UNESCO World Heritage site in Mozambique and one of the few in Africa. It was the capital for 400 years and it still looks much as it did centuries ago, the remnants of former wealth very evident. There’s a sixteenth century fort, various churches and mosques to see, and the crumbling town remains impressive today. Coral Lodge is near the village of Cabaceira Pequena, home to most of the lodge staff, where traditional mud houses sit alongside a 13th century mosque. This village and others nearby have lived in isolation for many centuries, sheltering the Macua people from civil war and AIDS, but also depriving them of development, education and modern medicine. It’s fascinating to visit these communities and learn more about the people and their traditions. The community benefits from a fund established by Coral Lodge, so visits helps bridge the gap between luxury tourism and the local people who depend on it.

Keen to sample private island living, we drove to Pemba, for a short flight to the Quirimbas Archipelago and a 15 minute boat ride to Quilalea island. The Quirimbas Archipelago remains relatively untouched by tourism, too far off the beaten track to enable easy access and is visited only by the lucky few. Known throughout Africa as a conservational jewel, the area is home to a myriad of wildlife both onshore and surrounding the pristine coral reefs. Sister property to Azura on Benguerra Island in Southern Mozambique, Azura at Quilalea opened at the end of 2011, and has just nine coral stone and makuti thatched villas situated on an otherwise uninhabited 86 acre island, surrounded by a protected marine sanctuary. The villas are fitted out in Robinson Crusoe castaway style, with natural furnishings and Azura’s trademark African-chic. They’re open plan and spacious, the decor consisting of wood, cotton, rope, pebbles and rattan, blending seamlessly with the island surroundings. Sunrise Villas come with stunning sea views, and our Sunset Villa had sunloungers and daybed on the terrace, and an outside shower. The signature Villa Quilalea is situated on a cliff top with a private plunge pool looking out over the Indian Ocean. Azura at Quilalea is built ecologically, using solar power and wind-generated electricity wherever possible. Uniquely, as a guest you can control your own energy consumption in your villa via a wall switch – opting for Eco - for the bare minimum, or Luxe - providing all mod cons including air conditioning. Each villa comes with a dedicated butler, on hand to look after your every need, from arranging activities to where you’re going to eat for the day. Quilalea also has a state-of-the-art TV and media room, a bar and pool area with big comfy cushions for lazing around, a PADI dive and watersports centre and a boutique selling local crafts and designer beachwear. The

92

cliff-top spa offers signature African treatments based on local ingredients and traditions. The stunning location and rhythmical splashing of water aided the relaxation process as I was rubbed down with ground coconut shells, covered head to toe with tamarind and aloe, and gently massaged with warm marula oil. It smells delicious and leaves your skin soft and your mind at ease. Quilalea’s restaurant and lounge is located on a peninsular at the northern tip of the island, with fantastic sea views on both sides. The cuisine included surf-fresh fish, exquisite salads and freshly baked breads. With the assistance of our butler, we chose various locations in which to dine including a romantic dinner under the stars and several serene beach picnics. As Quilalea is part of a marine sanctuary, the diving and snorkelling is of course superb, with over 375 different species of fish found within the sanctuary, and fantastic diving a mere 20 metres offshore on the house reef. If you’re lucky you may see dugongs grazing in the sea-grass meadows, a fish eagle perched in a tall mangrove or perhaps whales sheltering their young in Quilalea’s deep channel. Both Quilalea and adjacent Sencarisland are important breeding and nesting grounds for Olive Ridley, Green and Hawksbill turtles and they can be seen year round. Dolphins may also be seen year round, and Humpback whales may be spotted from July to October. n

Need to Know Four nights at Coral Lodge and four nights at Azura Quilalea with Jacada Travel starts from £4475 per person including international flights from the UK, internal and private charter flights and all transfers. Accommodation at both properties is fully inclusive. www.jacadatravel.com

paradise found in PARIS As the summer finally arrives, Vantage steps into Paris, and rediscovers the city of love

P

aris is, of course, beautiful all year round – every season frames the ‘city of love’ in a different, magnificent light – but there is something particularly beautiful about Paris in summertime, as the city awakens from a cold winter and the air along the River Seine is filled with the heady scent of blossom. A mere bunny hop from London via Eurostar, Paris is the ideal destination for a weekend away; the city centre is perfect for exploring on foot and in such warm weather and you wouldn’t want to miss a moment by travelling via the metro. For a real experience of summer in Paris, don’t miss a relaxing turn around the Jardin du Luxembourg, just south of St-Germain-des-Prés; think lush, green, leafy gardens and sparkling fountains, designed in an elegant French style in 1612 at the palace built for Marie de Medici, Regent of France. Stop for a rest and coffee at the Grand Bassin where Parisian boys and girls delight in sailing their boats, or explore the nineteenth century orangery where the 200 plants are starting to awaken. Alternatively, take a stroll in Parc Andre Citroën (rue Balard, 75015), which was once the site of the famous car factory. Take in the unique layout of the green space where various landscapers have created eclectic, unusual and even themed gardens across 14 hectares complete with surprising features such as computer-controlled water installations and stepping-stones! From its stunning riverside walks and charming café culture, to the luxurious boulevards and exquisite haute-couture boutiques, Paris offers the epitome of chic city life. With the city’s finest points magnified in the glorious sunshine, now is the ideal time to visit before the tourists descend. Le Pavillon des Lettres (www.pavillondeslettres.com) is Paris’s

94

first literary-inspired hotel which pays homage to chic French design alongside great figures of the past. Each one of the achingly stylish 26 rooms reflects the works of a named author, ranging from Hans Christian Anderson (A) to Emile Zola (Z). Carefully chosen texts on the walls contribute towards the reflective mood and, for extra special visits, guests may choose from ‘Les Belles Lettres’ and ‘Les Romantiques’ – the two top-floor suites with breath-taking views of the Eiffel Tower and the Grand Palais. When you step out, guests are ideally located for a springtime stroll; the hotel is within walking distance of the Avenue des Champs-Élysées and Le Jardin des Tuileries. The Hotel du Nord (www.hoteldunord.org) continues the literary theme, as diners are led behind a row of bookshelves into the restaurant where the menu offers simple dishes and seasonal specials. For a grander option, Le Mini Palais is perfect for supper and has a menu designed by Eric Frechon, holder of three Michelin stars. It is set beneath mighty imperial columns overlooking the Seine at the southern end of the Grand Palais (www.grandpalais.fr). Finally, visitors to the city must sample a cup of molten chocolate at Angelina’s Tea Room (www.groupe-bertrand.com/angelina), where Coco Chanel was once a regular, before taking a tour of the city with 4 Roues Sous 1 Parapluie (‘four wheels under one umbrella’). First designed in the Thirties, the Deux Chevaux car will take you all over Paris covering the main avenues and the hidden backstreets – a fantastically fun way of sightseeing. n Eurostar (08705 186 186; www.eurostar.com) runs from St Pancras International to Paris Gare du Nord. Business premier rates start from £245.

little LUXURIES Annabel Harrison speaks to CEO of Small Luxury Hotels of the WorldTM (SLH), Paul Kerr, about the brand’s 21-year history, why, for him, travel is all about the luxury of choice and why London is the best city in the world

T

he Goring, London? A small, luxurious hotel. Coco Palm, the Maldives? Another small, luxurious hotel. Le Grand Hotel, Cannes? Yet another. You might not know it but scattered far and wide over the globe in capital cities and urban hotspots, on idyllic islands and within remote retreats, there are more than 520 boutique hotels deemed of a high enough calibre to be branded with the distinctive gold letters. Each offering is different – opt for private sanctuary, total relaxation, challenging adventure, culture immersion or gourmet discovery – but there are two factors that remain constant, whether you’re in India or Italy, China or Croatia, Bali or Barbados. Every single SLH hotel is guaranteed to

96

be (a) small and (b) luxurious and therefore, as CEO Paul Kerr rightly points out, the company offers “exactly what it says on the tin”. In fact, taking into account his conviction that luxury is choice, the phrase ‘spoilt for choice’ never rang truer. How could you possibly choose? An insight into this difficulty is apparent when I arrive at the SLH offices. The walls are adorned with sequences of tantalising images: postcard-perfect sandy beaches; snow-capped mountain ranges mirrored in inky lakes; camels’ shadows silhouetted against sand dunes at sunset. I tell Paul that these dream holiday shots are part of the best ‘Don’t you wish you were here?’ collection I have seen. He smiles: “We’re a very photogenic company”. The fact that SLH has a wealth of stunning locations to shoot is aided by a strict selection process, as aesthetically minded as Next Top Model and as business-minded as Dragon’s Den. Applications numbering 1,200 a year are whittled down to just 50 or 60 suitably small and

t r av e l

luxurious establishments and Paul confirms that, “only those truly worthy of joining are accepted”. Europe, the “Disney of the world”, is a particularly strong continent (boasting almost 60 per cent of the portfolio) for SLH, followed by footholds in Asia and North America. The newest additions to the company portfolio are in Cambodia and Tunisia – its first hotel in each – as well as additional properties in increasingly well-represented destinations, such as Japan. As Paul points out, “what this all amounts to is greater choice of destination for our guests, a greater number, style and type of hotel within those destinations and a greater variety of memorable experiences available in and around those hotels.” I find out that Paul has visited approximately 285 of these. Research, of course, but it is this kind of on-the-ground, globe-trotting research and persistent, far-flung attention to detail, that has propelled SLH to where it is today, setting the precedent for luxury hotels with its definitive ‘small is beautiful’ ethos. The industry has started to shun ‘bigger is better’ in favour of ‘less is more’ so now SLH’s competitors are not just leading hotels but also chains trying to get into the boutique space, because “that is naturally where the high-end customers want to go”. Despite this shift, SLH is differentiated from others in the market because it has stuck to its buzz words of ‘luxury’ and ‘small’; Paul points out that the average number of rooms per hotel has only varied between 49 and 52. With decades of experience in this industry under his belt, Paul has worked through its biggest changes and the boutique trend was driven largely by the desires of the customer. Out: complicated, opulent luxury – thick carpets, intricate decoration and gourmet food (“although this is great if that’s what you want”). In: a massive trend for spas and, increasingly, “more understated luxury”. He declares SLH the champion of independent hotels: “Each one has its own distinct personality, determined by the owner, who is often on hand to contribute to the authentic, personalised service and an insider appreciation of the local culture.” Can Paul choose a favourite? “I couldn’t possibly!” As we swerve through a round-up of his favourite hotels and experiences, many of these revolve around sailing, in and around Thailand, Greece and Turkey, although India is praised as a superb destination (“I picked the coffee beans fresh from the plant itself and saw the beans go to be processed”), and Italy as “an amazing, beautiful country with so many places to go and things to see”. However, there’s no place like home and “completely biased” Englishman Paul waxes as lyrically about London as places abroad: “The city is absolutely superb and utterly cosmopolitan, with various ethnicities living alongside each other. There are fantastic restaurants and amazing buildings, such as the Houses of Parliament, and this summer we have exciting celebrations to look forward to: the Diamond Jubilee and, of course, the Olympics.” Finally Paul considers the percentage of repeat customers. “That is an interesting question because it varies from hotel to hotel. Overall, it’s eight to 12 per cent”. I’m sure this is set to rise. Once you’ve experienced the understated luxury of a perfectly sized hotel, you’ll be planning your next trip before you’ve even returned home. n Visit www.slh.com/club to join the complimentary Club of SLH, and receive benefits including room upgrades on your next trip. TURNING BACK the clock

Motoring fans are well served by classic events within easy reach of the capital. Matthew Carter relives a Goodwood Revival and highlights others you mustn’t miss this summer

O

verhead, a pair of Spitfire fighters escort a Lancaster bomber to safety. On the ground, a Dad’s Army of Home Guard soldiers attempts to keep order as a group of mods and rockers run riot. Elsewhere, jazz bands blow, barbers cut and shoppers dip into Tesco looking to collect a few more Green Shield Stamps. Yes, the chronology is a little out but this is the Goodwood Revival and anything, provided it’s from the 1940s-60s, goes. It’s all part of what could justifiably claim to be the greatest show on earth and it’s just one of the season’s must-do events, whether you’re a petrol-head or not. The Revival is held on the site of the former RAF station of Westhampnett, originally an emergency landing airfield

98

for WWII fighters down near Chichester on the Sussex coast. After the war, it was turned into the Goodwood Motor Circuit, one of the fastest race tracks in the UK and where top line motor racing took place until 1966, when rising speeds and safety concerns forced its owners to close it down rather than emasculate the circuit with chicanes. Today, racing is back for one weekend a year (14-16 September) when the entire place comes alive for a three-day nostalgia fest that celebrates three decades of all-action history. Vintage aircraft take to the skies and cars of the type that raced there in period return to the track. But what makes the Revival particularly unique is the fact that everyone taking part dresses accordingly. Drivers – including many famous names – wear plain overalls devoid of

motoring

gaudy sponsorship, mechanics wear white coats, officials wear armbands tied on with string and, best of all, the spectators join in. Gentlemen wear uniforms or jackets and ties. Cravats and trilbies are everywhere, while ladies wear 50s fashion with swing skirts, heels and gloves (and plenty of fur). Others embrace the 1960s, with mini skirts and thigh high boots. All around the circuit there are authentic period vehicles and themes. WWII Jeeps and 1950s trucks and vans service the site, while even the car parks are full of classic cars of the period – with the more modern stuff parked well away from the action. The attention to detail is extraordinary. Food outlets serve fish and chips in reprints of 1950s newspapers and even the corn stooks on the circuit infield are made from a specially-grown crop with extra-long stalks for hand cutting rather than combine harvesting. “The Revival is theatre,” says Lord March, Goodwood’s owner. “The circuit is literally dressed up like a huge film set, and that includes the competitors and spectators. “Almost everyone is dressed to the nines in fantastic 1950s creations and the efforts people go to are amazing. But equally, it’s quite easy to look the part in just smart classic clothing – it depends how far you want to go.” And we haven’t even mentioned the racing yet. On track action is of the highest calibre and regularly attracts top names including recent F1 stars, sport car champions and the cream of the historic car and bike racing crop. Feature races this year include the Shelby Cup, a 45-minute two-driver race for AC Cobras, and the TT Celebration race, a one-hour two-driver

race with priceless cars such as the Ferrari 250GTO and GT SWB, Aston DB4GT and lightweight E-types trading places. Without a doubt the Revival meeting is the highlight of the classic motoring year but it’s a long way from being the only event on the calendar, nor even the only event at Goodwood. A trip to Goodwood House, the family home of Lord March, for the Festival of Speed (28 June – 1 July) will mean close contact with a vast array of racing machinery from the earliest times to the present day. Modern F1 machinery and their drivers – Sebastian Vettel is coming this year – rub shoulders with track and rally cars and stars, racing and road bikes and supercars and superstars, all of whom tackle the now famous Goodwood Hill climb with incredible enthusiasm and no apparent concern for the narrowness of the track and the proximity of stone walls, trees and other obstacles. This year’s theme is Young Guns – Born to Win while the featured marque is Lotus (assuming the company’s current problems allow it). Just a couple of weeks before the Festival, Brooklands – the world’s first purpose built race track – is holding the Double Twelve Motorsport Festival (16-17 June). Although the pre-war banked circuit, down near Weybridge in Surrey, is no longer complete, there’s enough track left for period cars to compete in various driving challenges, a concours d’élégance and speed trials. Organised by the Vintage Sports Car Club, more than 144 classic and vintage cars will be competing, while other attractions on the site include the Brooklands Museum and Mercedes-Benz World. The cut and thrust of classic racing can also be enjoyed at the Silverstone Classic weekend (20-22 July) with E-types and AC Cobras locking horns once again. There will be races for classic touring cars, historic sports and GT cars plus F1 Grand Prix racers of all shapes and sizes. In all, there will be some 1,100 cars entered for 22 races over the three-day event, along with special cavalcades including a salute to the Ferrari F40, which celebrates its 25th birthday this year. Some 50 examples of this remarkable car have already been entered. Determined to deliver a weekend of all-round entertainment the organisers have included rock music evenings, with Mike and the Mechanics topping the bill on Friday night and Adam and the Ants taking over on Saturday night. Finally, if motorsport is not your absolute passion but you do enjoy old cars, why not try the close-to-home Enfield Pageant of Motoring (just off junction 25 of the M25) at the end of this month (25-27 May)? With more than 2,000 vintage and classic trucks, bikes and cars on display, plus 400 auto-jumble stands to help you find that illusive part for your own treasured classic, there’s something for everyone here. n For more information and ticket details, please visit:

T

he stamp duty levy for homes worth £2 million or more rose to 7 per cent, up from 5 per cent, in March. Some of those buying through a company now face a charge of 15 per cent. However, the early indications are that the market is so far proving resilient, with a higher number of sales of homes worth £2 million or more in April than in the same month last year. Certainly, prospective purchasers have not been put off. The volumes of those signing up to look for a new home worth £2 million plus rose by 13 per cent in April compared to March. Overall, prime central London property prices continued to climb in April, rising by 1.1 per cent and taking the annual growth rate to 11.4 per cent. Kensington and Chelsea are among the best performing prime areas. One of the key reasons why the prime London property market is performing strongly is the attraction the city holds for international as well as domestic buyers. In international terms, the new 7 per cent stamp duty for properties worth £2 million or more is still less than the purchase taxes charged in other popular international destinations. Buyers in Monaco, for example, face purchase taxes of around 15 per cent, while buyers in Singapore will pay around 14.3 per cent once stamp duty, agents’ fees and other charges are taken into account. Buyers in Florence pay 10 per cent while even Paris is more expensive at around 9 per cent. Certainly, the attraction London holds for buyers of prime property was underlined by the recent Knight Frank/Citi Wealth Report. We surveyed advisors to more than 4,000 wealthy individuals and asked them to rank cities that were important to their clients in terms of economic activity, political power, quality of life and knowledge and influence. London came out on top, with New York in second place. When we asked the advisers what the top city would be in ten years’ time, London maintained its position in the top spot. n

All eyes have been on the prime London property market over the last month in the wake of the introduction of the new, higher, stamp duty charge on homes worth more than £2m in the Budget. Grainne Gilmore, head of UK residential research at Knight Frank, explains further

Time to celebrate local know-how.

One knows one’s locality. And because one lives, works and is passionate about our area, one knows exactly whos looking for a property – just like yours.

Established in 1856. The first rules for croquet were registered the year we started. We’ve been going through the hoops to build strong relationships with landlords ever since.

The year we first opened our doors... ...was a year for awards. Queen Victoria awarded the first Victoria Cross. Last year, was an awardwinning year for us, too. The Negotiator’s ‘National Lettings Agency of the Year’ and ‘Overall Supreme Agency of the Year’, to name just two.

Elgin Avenue W9 £2,350,000 This impressive Victorian conversion boasts a fantastic open plan kitchen/reception room leading out to a large private balcony and a guest cloakroom, a sumptuous master bedroom suite, a large guest bedroom with en suite, two further double bedrooms, a shower room and a private south facing roof terrace. Share of Freehold. Sole Agents.

“Our flat had been on the market with another agent, we never thought we would sell the place. It was a great relief to see your team selling it with genuine enthusiasm. Not only did they bring the buyers in, we got a really good price.” A delighted recent seller

property

state of the market

After a strong start to 2012, Jeremy Stecker, sales director of Chesterton Humberts’ new St John’s Wood office, explains why St John’s Wood and the borough of Westminster is leading the slow recovery of the national property market

T

o the satisfaction of many of our clients, and in spite of ongoing fears over the health of the economy, our Little Venice office saw a significant uplift in prices achieved for sales transactions during the first quarter of the year. In my opinion, this is more than partly due to strong demand from buyers struggling to secure well-presented, well-located and realistically priced property in the area. In response to the high demand, we are very excited to have opened a new office on St John’s Wood High Street and, as expected, enquires have been coming in thick and fast. Since March we have

142

found there to be more properties available for sale which has alleviated the property shortage to some degree, although demand is still outstripping the current supply. London is proving to be the hottest market in the UK, thanks to its prime submarkets, the strongest being Westminster, where we have seen average house prices rise by 12.3 per cent – an incredible 16.5 per cent higher than the pre-recession peak. Foreign purchasers continue to dominate the market, although at lower levels we have seen an increase in enquires from UK cash purchasers. Buyers generally consider St John’s Wood a safe investment haven offering greater value per square foot than some other, more central, London locations as well as the opportunity to buy in to a real suburban lifestyle without compromising on proximity to central London. With the summer market set to be a busy one, homeowners who have toyed with the idea of selling are best advised to get a market valuation and advice on how to best promote their property. n 122, St. John’s Wood High Street, St. John’s Wood, NW8 7SG 020 3040 8611 jeremy.stecker@chestertonhumberts.com www.chestertonhumberts.com
