We want to hear from you! How far have you travelled? What is your favourite artist of all time? What do you love about The O2? Keep an eye out to see if we mention you. Hello,
Hi Venue,
Afternoon,
Hi Venue,
I want to visit The British Music Experience. Do I have to book tickets in advance or can I buy the tickets on the day when I arrive?
I have booked standing tickets for Black Eyed Peas, but my ticket shows a row number and seat number. What does this mean? Will I have a seat or will I be allocated a standing area?
I have tickets for Westlife on 12 May. My daughter was hoping to go along with a friend. They are both 14. Can they attend on their own?
I am coming to The O2 for a meal for my birthday. Please can you tell me if any of the restaurants on Entertainment Avenue serve gluten-free food?
Mrs West, Essex
Thanks Melanie, London
Thanks Ruth, Kent
Thanks Jo, Surrey
Dear Ruth, Yes, tickets for The British Music Experience can be bought on the day at our box office. If we are really busy you might have to wait for the next available time slot, but usually we have good availability. I hope you have a great time at the exhibition!
Dear Jo, Standing tickets have row and seat numbers on them so we can count the number of tickets sold. You won’t have a seat; you will be standing on the arena floor. When you enter the arena you can stand wherever you like in the space available.
Dear Mrs West, Dear Melanie,
Anyone aged 14 or under needs to be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over, so I’m afraid your daughter and her friend won’t be able to come on their own. On the upside, that means you’ll get to see Westlife too!

Torvill and Dean’s Dancing on Ice 2010 UK Tour is getting better by the minute; this years winner, Hayley Tamaddon, has also signed up to compete in the 2010 UK Tour. The former Emmerdale star has announced she will take part in the Dancing on Ice UK Tour, which starts in Sheffield on 8 April and heads to The O2 in London on Friday 16 April for an incredible five-date stay. The latest round of stars to sign up to the tour join Hayley’s biggest rival, Boyzone’s Mikey Graham, former Coronation Street favourite Gaynor Faye, ex-Hollyoaks actor Chris Fountain and former X Factor star Ray Quinn. Singer and actor Ray was crowned the winner of the 2009 ITV1 series and consistently wowed audiences with his performances during the 2009 tour. Gaynor Faye was winner of the first TV series and Chris Fountain was a runner-up in series three. All of the skating celebrities will dance their way around the country to specially choreographed routines by skating legends Torvill & Dean. The format of the tour is the same as previous years, audiences can use their mobile phone, to text vote, for their favourite dancing couple. The votes will then be added to the scores from the Judges to decide the winner, before a magical finale. As with the previous tours, all profits from text voting will go to charity. Tickets are on sale via www.theo2.co.uk or by calling 0844 856 0202.

With over 3 million tickets sold worldwide, the number one tribute show in the world, The Australian Pink Floyd Show, returns to the UK in April 2010. Following a 40-date sellout winter arena tour of the USA and Canada, the world-renowned Australian Pink Floyd Show are currently taking their global spectacular across Europe. “On this tour we will play a ‘Greatest Hits’ type show, rather than one complete album. It will give the fans a chance to see and hear many of their favourite Pink Floyd songs performed live,” says singer and bass player Colin Wilson. “We will, of course bring a huge light show with us again, so it’s definitely a show not to miss!” Singer and guitarist Damian Darlington adds “In 2009 we performed the complete Wall album for its 30th anniversary. In 2010 we will perform all the favourite Pink Floyd songs from across their whole catalogue. Anyone who has ever liked Pink Floyd will love this new show.” The UK leg of the tour runs from 22 April – 12 May. Tickets are on sale via www.theo2.co.uk or by calling 0844 856 0202.

black eyed peas
L
ast spring, Black Eyed Peas began The E.N.D. with a show and some DJ appearances at Miami’s Winter Music Conference, the pre-eminent dance music event in the world. It was a good backdrop against which to launch their fifth album: after a series of albums of pop hip hop – that sold 18 million copies between them – the Los Angeles’ foursome’s fifth is a club-friendly belter, bristling with turbo-charged party tunes. When the band’s leader will.i.am joined French superstar DJ David Guetta at an early-hours club to play their collaboration I Gotta Feeling, the audience’s reaction pretty much took the roof off. And they hadn’t even heard the brand new song before. Meanwhile Boom Boom Pow, the energetic lead single from The E.N.D., was a huge-selling Number 1 on both sides of the Atlantic. For the band responsible
for Where Is The Love? and My Humps, this was a radically different sound, one that took their success to a whole new level: last year Black Eyed Peas broke chart records in America when Boom Boom Pow and I Gotta Feeling stayed at Number 1 for a staggering 26 consecutive weeks. “That’s one of the reasons it’s called The E.N.D.,” says writer/producer will.i.am of a title that also functions as an acronym: The Energy Never Dies. “Everything’s changing. Every piece of fabric on the planet is going through some type of change, whether it’s politics, the banks, the record industry… So we embrace the change,” he continues. “And we celebrate the change and we called the record The E.N.D. to start new beginnings. This record is really us immersing ourselves in this new sound. And being respectful and responsible in how we approach it. And paying dues. So,” he concludes, “it’s dope.”
With five hugely successful albums now under their belts, we take a look at what the Black Eyed Peas are really all about

black eyed peas Will is busy in other ways too. He has his own fashion label, i.am clothing, which is responsible for the band’s stagewear – prior to forming Black Eyed Peas with Taboo and apl.de.ap in 1995 (Fergie joined in 2001), he studied fashion at LA’s Institute of Design & Merchandise. He acts – he was a teleporting mutant in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and the voice of hippo, Moto Moto in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. And he’s a tech pioneer – he’s helped develop Dipdive, a social-networking site that he calls “a lifestyle engine for music, arts, action and more”. Black Eyed Peas are using it as a tool to distribute the live webcasts that they’re presenting to fans as aftershow parties on their current world tour. “This is Twitter times a billion,” he says. “Twitter is, like, a picture and 140 letters. This is video, MP3s, blogs…” He says that the financial burden – he’s funding much of Dipdive’s development himself – “could flatten me… But it’s about now. I need to turn this into a network. I need to make content all the time: sketch comedy, journalism, stuff like that, using these tools.” When he was developing the concept, “when we
played live, we asked people to leave on the Bluetooth on their cellphones. So the song would be pumping out data. We’d be playing Where is the Love? and when the chorus came on, we’d send them something via Bluetooth: messages, ringtones, pictures. Whatever content you want.” Such is the speed and Fergie. enthusiasm with which will.i.am moves things forward, it’s a safe bet that this year’s mid-concert – and post-concert – content will be more impressive still. But before all that come the party gigs of 2010. As the first beats of I Gotta Feeling pump out across the arena, even the roof of The O2 might not be safe…n

rammy award winner, Billboard chart topper, fashion icon, model, ambassador, philanthropist and, quite simply, global megastar: is there anything this girl can’t do? At the age of just 22, Rihanna has an incredible 16 hit singles, four multiplatinum albums and five sellout tours under her belt. Her army of fans has downloaded in excess of 75 million of her songs, and this fan base is set to boom as she embarks on a spectacular, hit-filled UK arena tour. Her meteoric rise to stardom began only six years ago, when teenage Robyn Rihanna Fenty was growing up in Barbados, witnessing her father’s addiction problems and her parents’ divorce. Her way out came as soon as veteran producer Evan Rodgers, on holiday on the idyllic Caribbean island, heard her sing; he spotted her potential at once, although had he not, Rihanna acknowledges she “might just have been dreaming forever”. Rodgers arranged for Rihanna to audition for Def Jam president Jay-Z, who signed her that same day. “It took me two minutes to see she was a star”, he said. Young, beautiful and talented, the remarkably ambitious teenager left Barbados at just 16: “I didn’t look back. I wanted to do what I had to do, even if it meant moving to America”. And so Rihanna, marketed by just her middle name, burst onto the teen pop scene in 2005 with the infectiously catchy, Caribbeanbeat-infused Pon de Replay, which reached number two in the US and UK. The following year, the equally catchy SOS, backed by the electro-funk of 80s classic Tainted Love gave Rihanna her first US number one. Rolling Stone magazine defined Rihanna’s debut album as “what Beyoncé might have sounded like if she had grown up in the West Indies and skipped the whole Destiny’s Child thing”; Music of the Sun is indeed infused with a sunshiny mix of RnB, hip hop and reggae. After selling a million copies of this album, and nearly two million of A Girl Like Me, Rihanna silenced the inevitable critics and proved her breakthrough was no fluke. Still only 18 years old, her

lyrics appealed to teenage girls who could identify with sentiments such as “SOS please someone help me”, and the goal of her second album “was to express the many things young women want to say, but might not know how”. Rihanna’s third album, Good Girl Gone Bad, won her long-awaited critical acclaim: no one could argue with eight hit singles and cumulative global sales of 36 times platinum. The rollercoaster of hits began with Grammy award-winning hit Umbrella, followed by Shut Up And Drive, Hate That I Love You and Don’t Stop The Music. Umbrella was number one in the UK for ten consecutive weeks, making it the longest running UK number one since Wet Wet Wet’s Love Is All Around in 1994. “With stage presence to match a pre-meltdown Britney”, reported the Sun’s Larry Meyler, “and moves that would have Beyoncé quaking in her hot pants, Rihanna going bad is very good”. And the world agreed.

The bad girl’s musical gear change was mirrored by a shift in attitude and image; long, honeycoloured hair was replaced by an edgy, dark cut and Rihanna earned her stripes as one of the most fashion-forward young stars of the noughties. She appeared on the cover of Vogue Italia’s ‘Extreme Couture’ issue and was selected as the spokesmodel for Gucci’s first UNICEF ‘Tattoo Heart’ ad campaign. Take a Bow and Disturbia, in keeping with her edgier image, gave Rihanna two more number one US singles, making her a record-breaking frontrunner in chart history. However, column inches about hit songs became dominated by reports of a different kind when Rihanna began dating R’n’B singer Chris Brown. This fairytale pairing of the young, successful stars soured when Rihanna’s scheduled performance at the 2009 Grammy Awards was cancelled and Brown was charged with assault. But Rihanna emerged “stronger, wiser and more aware”, and proved herself musically better than ever with her hotly anticipated fourth studio album, Rated R, created by a raft of renowned producers, including Ne-Yo, Stargate and Justin Timberlake. Single Russian Roulette is a haunting, dark number, while ballsy and provocative Rude Boy was released just before the Rated R arena tour comes to The O2, on 10–11 May, where the star is performing for the first time in two years. When Rude Boy made the Billboard Top 10 this year, Rihanna’s 14th single to do so, she confidently leapt ahead of established queen Beyoncé’s current run of 12. But Rihanna wants her own crown, and one thing is for sure: she is already wearing it and Beyoncé better watch out. n

The O2’s FIRST OPERA Bizet’s Carmen, the world’s most popular opera arrives
T
his year, The O2 is finally set to host its first opera. Carmen will be performed in May for just three performances and follows on from highly successful and popular classical stagings of Carmina Burana, Andrea Bocelli and Ben Hur Live at the venue. The story of Carmen is set in Seville, c.1830, and tells of the eponymous gypsy girl – beautiful, but with a fiery temper. Free with her attention and affection, she woos the corporal Don José, an inexperienced soldier.
Their relationship leads to his rejection of his former love, mutiny against his commander and joining a band of smugglers. His jealousy, when Carmen finally leaves him in favour of Escamillo the bullfighter, causes Don José to murder her. An opéra comique (a French genre of opera including spoken dialogue) Carmen was created by Georges Bizet, and based on the novella of the same name, by Prosper Mérimée. Carmen premiered in Paris in 1875, but was promptly denounced by the majority of critics and almost withdrawn from the Opéra-Comique. Sadly, Bizet died aged just 37 in the same year, never knowing how popular and loved Carmen would 2 eventually become. The most performed and most popular opera in the world, it is therefore fitting that Carmen should come to the world’s most popular Raymond Gubbay music venue. The first full opera to be performed at The O2, Carmen seems a fitting choice for the inauguration of opera on this spectacular stage.
The O is a wonderful venue to stage such a dramatic and powerful opera”

carmen With three performances scheduled for May 2010, the production is set to wow opera lovers from all around the UK. Following highly successful classical shows, The O2 has already proved itself as an outstanding classical and operatic venue, and fans can look forward to an incredible performance. Directed by David Freeman (founder of The Opera Factory, whose previous credits include Madam Butterfly, Tosca and Carmen at the Royal Albert Hall), his version of Bizet’s epic opera arrives at The O2 on a grand scale. From the opening moments to the final tragic notes, this breathtaking ‘in-the-round’ show is a powerful rendition of the memorable story of lust, superstition and murder with a dramatic and fatal ending. Accompanied by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (conducted by Gareth Hancock), the world-class company of over 150 singers, musicians and artists (including dancers, acrobats and fire-eaters) come together to present a truly unforgettable production, staged on an epic scale. The magical set and fabulous costumes bring to life the dusty atmosphere of the town square, the cool night air of the smugglers’ mountain hideout, and the colourful festivities outside of the bullring in Seville.
The production is designed by David Roger whose previous credits include operas for English National Opera, Opera North and the Kirov; lighting by multi Tony Award-winning Andrew Bridge (Phantom of the Opera, Fosse, Sunset Boulevard), choreographed by Robert North (former Artistic Director of Ballet Rambert, Teatro Regio (Torino) and Scottish Ballet), with sound design by Bobby Aitken and English translation by the acclaimed Amanda Holden. Cristina Nassif and Louise Poole share the role of Carmen and are supported by John Hudson and Philip O’Brien sharing the role of Don José. Sung in English, Bizet’s famous score contains some of the opera world’s finest arias and best-loved music; the rousing Song of the Toreador, the beguiling Seguidilla, the tantalising Habanera and the enchanting Flower Song. Audiences will lose themselves in the powerful and sensual music that perfectly captures the very spirit of Spain. “The O2 is a wonderful venue to stage such a dramatic and powerful opera,” says Raymond Gubbay (impresario and classical music promoter). “We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to transform this amazing space and produce the first opera there.”n
Performances will be held at The O2 on 21 – 23 May Tickets are available via telephone on 0844 856 0202 or visit www.theo2.co.uk

B40 rose from humble beginnings (the group’s name came from the Unemployment Benefit Form 40) when Chrissie Hynde spotted their accessible and melodic reggae pop mix, and asked the band to be the support act for her own group The Pretenders. Since then, UB40 have gone on to take the world by storm, selling over 60 million records, including four No.1 singles and winning an Ivor Novello Award. Some of UB40’s most successful hits such as Red, Red Wine and I Got You Babe have become part of the nation’s collective musical psyche, along with Campbell’s instantly recognisable voice. CRAZY LOVE
Claire Saunders joins thousands of other UK

C
anadian multi-award-winning singer/songwriter Michael Bublé has announced that he will be returning to The O2 on 15 and 16 May as part of his UK 2010 tour in support of his latest studio release, Crazy Love. Filling the arena with the big band sounds of his new album, the 2010 tour promises classic covers, catchy original songs and old favourites. With over 22 million albums sold worldwide, multiple awards (including 6 Juno Awards, 5 Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards and a Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album), three number 1 hits including Home, Everything and Lost, and 145 sold-out shows to date, Michael has more than earned his place as one of the most popular and revered artists of this decade. A modern-day ‘King of Swing’, Michael’s love of the swing era and big band music came to him from his grandfather, who filled the house with the sounds of the Mills Brothers, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. A familiar sound that is now evident in Michael’s own recordings, he absorbed the musical genre as a child, turning away from pop music in favour of these old classics. With his grandfather’s encouragement, Michael gained experience and exposure by singing these old tunes as a guest with several local bands, and in his teen years won the Canadian Youth Talent Search, released several independent albums, and performed in a musical revue titled Swing that travelled across America. Soon after, Michael was introduced to industry producer David Foster and signed his first major recording contract with Reprise Records. Michael’s self-titled debut album fused easy listening pop music with the classic swing style; released in early 2003 it featured tunes such as Fever and The Way You Look Tonight alongside newer classics like the Bee Gees’ How Can You Mend a Broken Heart? A couple of years later he released the live album Caught in the Act, a Christmas album (2006), and Call Me Irresponsible in 2007. The studio album Crazy Love (featuring duets with Sharon Jones and Ron Sexsmith), was released in October 2009 and the 2010 tour dates come in support of this most recent album – a collection of classic songs and new compositions. It becomes clear listening to Crazy Love that the trademark of Bublé’s songs is a voice that evokes his passion for life and an edgy sense of humanity and romance – an unmissable show, for sure.n

WALK THIS W
hat do you know about Aerosmith? You’d probably recognise the lead singer, and possibly know that his daughter’s a Hollywood actress. Can you name the rest of the band? Probably not. How many of their songs can you hum? Any apart from that rap one, that one from Armageddon, or that one from Mrs Doubtfire? I didn’t think so. It’s strange. They are officially the best-selling American rock band of all time. They’ve sold 150 million albums worldwide, won 4 Grammys and 10 MTV Video Music Awards, and hold the record for the most Gold and Multi-Platinum albums by any American group. They were even honoured at the MTV Music Awards in 2002 with top artists covering their hits (including Shakira’s version of Dude looks like a lady). They are known as “America’s greatest rock and roll band”... but for some reason us Brits seem to not really appreciate this. Here I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing – the song that caused a number 1 storm and dominated charts for weeks across the world – peaked at a mere number 4, and the renowned Janie’s Got a Gun never got beyond number 76.
2
They are one of those bands that everyone has heard of, and everyone thinks they know… but you’ve probably only started to scratch the surface. And we are seriously missing out. Aerosmith formed in 1970 when Tyler’s rock band Chain Reaction (that he formed aged 16) played the same gig as the blues-based Jam Band. Tyler was so impressed with their loose improvising technique that he asked to collaborate, and the groups merged to form a blues-based style that incorporated elements of pop, metal and rhythm-and-blues in a new inspiring genre. Their first two years were spent playing gigs in highschools and outside the Boston Student Union, while they flat-shared and stole supermarket food to survive. This didn’t last long. They were signed to Columbia in 1972 and released their first (self-titled) album in ’73, shooting into the American rock mainstream with follow-up Toys in the Attic. Their superstar status was secured with third album, Rocks, and with Draw The Line (their fourth album written in a converted 300-bedroom convent filled with friends and Porsches), they legitimately took the title as the most popular rock band in the world. Their relationship with

their fans was legendary, on one occasion the group even paying to bail out 52 groupies jailed for breaking a smoking ban in Indiana. Between ‘78 and ‘86 the band were infamously plagued by drug and alcohol addiction – Tyler collapsed on stage, the guitarists both left for several years, and Tyler and Perry became known as ‘The Toxic Twins’ due to their ludicrous drug-taking on and off the stage. This period has often been the focus of reviewers, but it’s the recovery that is really interesting. While other rockers fell by the wayside (Guns N’ Roses being a case in point) Aerosmith managed to pull themselves back from the brink. They stormed back into the charts in ‘86 with the rap cover of Walk This Way which, as well as cementing rap into the American mainstream, secured them a new generation of fans and paved the way for the release of album Permanent Vacation in ’87, which quickly went triple platinum. Far from being a second-rate reunion, critics almost seemed to prefer the band this time around, something reflected in their numerous hits and awards for multi-platinum albums Pump (1989), Get a Grip (1993) and Nine Lives (1997).
And this momentum hasn’t faltered. There have been continued number ones, movie appearances, a computer game (Revolution X), a club (Mama Kin Music hall, Boston)…and even art funding (they paid for a sexually explicit photography exhibition in Boston when the National Arts Fund pulled funding). Now, on the brink of their first European tour in three years, this is the perfect time to really discover these rock legends and catch up on what we Brits have been missing. Their Cocked, Locked and Ready to Rock tour has only two UK dates, with the only UK arena gig happening at The O2 on Tuesday 15 June 2010. Their last few tours have been plagued by injury (Tyler being rushed to hospital after he fell off a stage in 2009 while dancing to entertain the crowd when the sound system failed) but, despite negative rumours surrounding Tyler’s health due to years of performing, the band are determined to make this a tour to rival any other. “One thing we all agree on is that we love this band and its time to get out there and freakin’ PLAY!” (Hamilton) If you can think of it, they’ve done it and, from what it looks like, they are going to continue doing it as long as they can stand.n

Time Fades Away with Springtime Promises
It’s hard to believe it’s a year since the British Music Experience, the new national museum of popular music, opened and, as the first crocuses of spring appear, it’s a good time to reflect and look forward. Paul Lilley, Curator of the British Music Experience, tells us more
F
or me the few months around last March are a bit of a haze, the culmination of four years’ planning. The opening night will always stay with me though, and especially the look on one visitor’s face as they walked into the Gibson Interactive Studio and saw Nick Mason of Pink Floyd playing on one of the drum kits, and Glen Matlock, one-time Pistol, on bass. It was like they’d stumbled in on a fantasy jam session. Good on

them too for pulling up a chair and joining in – what else would you do? One of the exciting things about coming here is that you never know who you’re going to bump into. Now, noodling away on instruments isn’t for everyone, and that’s why we also created other engaging installations like the holographic dance booth, for example. Usually people tend to be pretty reserved in museums, but when they step through the door here something strange happens - they become extroverts, guitar heroes and dance floor divas. It’s great to see, as we always planned for the British Music Experience to be more than just a hip walk down the musical memory lane - we wanted it to be an active celebratory experience and, importantly, fun. I don’t want to get all David Brent in The Office here, but it is like ‘edutainment’…. For the traditionalists amongst us and those who just want to get close to their heroes, the

British Music Experience is stacked with amazing memorabilia. The Stage Outfits in particular have really turned people on, and I don’t know whether it’s because they radiate with the energy and essence of the artist who wore them, but there is definitely something magical about them. What we occasionally find in their pockets, however, is a bit more rock ‘n’ roll…ahem (least said, quickest mended and all that). The Public and Education Programme has also been an overwhelming success. People still stop me and rave about our first event when The Orb took on The Handbell Ringers of Great Britain in a Tubular Bells battle. If that was the bizarre, then the Master Class with the great Jeff Beck was sublime. It’s rare for fans to be able to engage in such an intimate setting and they’re real once-in-a-lifetime experiences. You’ll be pleased to know there’s more coming – with artists, producers and photographers to book readings, gigs and workshops. On the education side, the sheer number of
2
students we’ve seen has been amazing and the workshops, education sessions and trails we host, on everything from ITC to music technology, are constantly growing. This success is reflected in the £220,000 of education grants we’ve secured, which will benefit both local and national youth music organisations. If you’re a teacher, student, parent, or anyone involved in inspiring young people do check out the website, come along, and feed your head. So where do we go from here, as someone once said in a song? Every day brings something new – be it memorabilia, archive content, new education and public programmes, new visitors, new partner relationships and opportunities to make the British Music Experience even better. We started with a blank piece of paper, and to an extent we still have that mind-set of being able to do just about anything we or anyone else can think of. It’s a philosophy we share with the great artists and bands too – there are no rules in rock ‘n’ roll.n

Disco Queen As the inimitable voice behind the disco anthems Young Hearts Run Free and You Got The Love, Candi Staton has had a remarkable career that’s endured since the late 60s
S
tarting out as the ‘First Lady of Southern Soul’, she went on to become one of the defining voices of the disco era before her team-up with The Source provided an anthem that continues to inspire the likes of Florence & The Machine today. We spoke to her to find out what she thinks of Florence’s cover of You Got The Love and what’s in store for her live show at matter on 10 April. Your new album seems to be a return to the blues and soul that you started with at the beginning of your career… Yeah, blues and soul is probably one of my favourite genres of music. Everything else I’ve done has come out of that. When we say we’re going to “take it home”, that means we’re gonna get into that soulful area of that song. That’s pretty much where I live, in that area right there. You’ve Got the Love has recently been covered by artists such as Florence and the Machine and Joss Stone. Is it a surprise for you how big it’s continued to be? I think it’s wonderful people like it enough to want to cover it – I’m very proud that I created something people liked. And the words are so great, it makes you feel good when you sing it. I think because of what we’re going through now in terms of our economy, when that line “You’ve got the love I need to see me through…” comes in we know we’re gonna get through this. It might be hard now but eventually we’re getting through it. Your career has spanned over 40 years – are there

any periods of your career that you look back on as especially fulfilling? All in their own way – I look back on it now and the times in my life are seasons; I would say we go through different seasons in life. There was a season that was bleak for me when I didn’t know what I wanted to do, and there was the gospel season when I wanted to take my time and reinvent myself: I had done everything. I’d sung everything. I’d been into drugs, I’d been into alcohol and I’d been to places I shouldn’t have been with people I should never have been with. So I took a 20-year sabbatical from the clubs and went back to church and sang gospel music, which was my stabilising factor. Then eventually you can say “I’m ready to do some more secular music and I won’t have to deal with drugs or alcohol or crazy people because I know who I am now”. So tell us a bit about the live show? Are there going to be songs from all the different seasons? Yeah, there are songs from every season. I don’t do gospel per se – I do songs that are very positive, so we’re gonna do lots of old and new stuff. We’re gonna give everybody a chance to hear their favourite song. In London we’ve had a real resurgence of disco – have you found a newer generation emerging among your fan base? Absolutely – it’s amazing! Naturally I’m gonna have to do You Got The Love, Young Hearts Run Free, Nights On Broadway and Suspicious Minds… They were big hits over there, so we’ll always do those in the show. It’s going to be a nice set. You’ve always had a sizable UK fan base. Is the UK particularly special to you? Very special, there’s no place like it. I’ve gone a lot of places, a lot of countries, but the UK is one of my favourites. The fans are so receptive, they really let you know how they feel. They don’t sit back and just gaze at you – they get into it. They let you know how much they enjoy it and that makes any artist feel great.n
