Thames Clipppers join the Oyster family
Thames Clippers is the leading commuter passenger boat service on the River Thames running a 20 minute frequency between key London piers including The O2, Greenwich, Canary Wharf, Tower, London Bridge, Embankment and Waterloo as well as several residential piers. There is also a direct shuttle service between London Bridge and Canary Wharf (providing a 10 minute frequency service for London’s commuters in peak hours. The Thames Clippers is the first river transport provider to join the Oyster card network and allows river passengers to travel using their Oyster pay as you go card with an additional 10% discount. The expansion means that passengers can now travel on the Thames Clipper alongside the Tube, DLR or bus service without buying any extra tickets. “Travelling on the river is one of the great pleasures of London and I firmly believe that Oysterisation will encourage more people to enjoy this relaxing way to commute or simply feast upon the sights of the Capital from a unique perspective” says The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson. www.thamesclippers.com
To use Oyster pay as you go on Thames Clippers, passengers getting aboard the vessel need only touch their Oyster card on the ticket inspector’s hand held reader, confirm which discount applies and then the fare will be taken from their pay as you go balance. Passengers with a Travelcard loaded onto their Oyster card are eligible for the existing discount of one third off their ticket price, which can then be paid for using pay as you go credit.

Bon Jovi announce an epic residency at The O2
The Movie comes to The O2
With 2,600 concerts under their belt since opening in Sayreville, New Jersey 26 years ago, Bon Jovi have become the quintessential stadium rock band. Now the group that made history by opening The O2 to mark its conversion from the Millennium Dome are to take up residency at the iconic venue. Their 2010 Circle World Tour kicks off in spring next year and will see the band play 135 concerts in 30 countries. Monday 7 June sees them rock The O2, the first band to announce a concert series of this scale since Michael Jackson’s 50-night This Is It residency. Jackson died last June, before the concerts could be performed. Bon Jovi formed in 1983 and earned widespread commercial success for their third album, Slippery When Wet. Famed for hits Livin’ On a Prayer and You Give Love a Bad Name, they have sold over 120million albums worldwide. They also had the biggest selling tour of last year and tickets for the first The O2 shows sold at a rate of 18 per second, promoters said, with 23,000 sales in the first two hours. Following this phenomenal demand Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, David Bryan and Tico Torres now return to the arena they made synonymous with the world’s greatest acts. “When Jon Bon Jovi opened The O2 with the words, ‘Hello London, welcome to your new home,’ little did he realise that we were already plotting to make it his new home!” says Rob Hallett of AEG Live. “Bon Jovi are the best live band in the world. This one could run and run.” With the release of their 11th studio album The Circle on 2 November, a live DVD of the band’s acclaimed dates at Madison Square Garden on 23 November and now a world tour that is expected to last for two years, Bon Jovi just go from strength to strength.
The O2 arena will host the biggest screening ever of the hit film, MAMMA MIA! A giant 100ft screen will be erected so an audience of 9,000 can see their favourite movie in all its glory. The audience will be encouraged to dress up in their MAMMA MIA! gear and also sing along to a song or two. From West End smash to global phenomenon, MAMMA MIA!, the stage show, has already been seen by over 40million people in over 200 major cities across North America, Australia, Europe and Asia since opening over a decade ago in London. The three women who created the worldwide smash stage hit – global producer, Judy Craymer, writer Catherine Johnson and director Phyllida Lloyd – repeated their roles in bringing the joyful, musical story to the big screen. The MAMMA MIA! movie has replicated the stage success and has grossed over £69.16million at the UK box office and has been seen by over 4.6million people in London. It also is the highest grossing film of all time at the UK and Irish box office. David Campbell, Chief Executive and President of AEG Europe, owners and operators of The O2, commented: ‘The success of MAMMA MIA! the film in the UK is incomparable. It has successfully brought the infectious music of ABBA to an entirely new generation. My children are already tugging at my sleeve to make sure I get them tickets for what will be a brilliant afternoon out.” Simon Hewlett, Managing Director of Universal Pictures International added: “Universal Pictures are delighted that The O2 will be staging these epic screenings of MAMMA MIA! The Movie. Watching MAMMA MIA! with a large audience is one of the most uplifting experiences you can imagine and an audience at The O 2 is as big as it gets.”

WELCOME TO THE FUNHOUSE This winter, The O2 welcomes back one of the world’s greatest pop stars; JOSEPHINE O’DONOGHUE takes a look at Pink’s return to London and her best bits so far
P
ink is known around the world as the archetypal rock chick. A far more diverse artist than the Britney’s and Christina’s of the industry, Pink has managed to carve herself a position in music fame that no other singer has managed to emulate. As MTV journalist James Montgomery pointed out, “Pink is kind of a rock star; she is kind of a party girl [...] She is kind of an RnB diva too. And she’s created a particular niche in the pop universe that somehow manages to combine all those things”. Bursting onto the music scene as a solo artist back in 2000 (with the release of debut album Can’t Take Me Home), Pink already boasted several years in the industry as a backing singer for artists such as Diana Ross and as a support act for boy band *NSYNC. However, it was only a year later that Pink released her next album, Missundaztood (her best-selling album to date) marking an obvious departure from mainstream pop, and the development of her own unique style. With five albums now under her belt, and over 23million records sold worldwide, Pink’s status has rocketed to global superstar. The latest offering, Funhouse, was released in October 2008 and is the inspiration for Pink’s epic 2009 world tour. Renowned for her raw emotional lyrics, Funhouse is ‘classic Pink’, taking the singer’s experiences and immortalising them in a collection of meaningful tracks. Speaking on the subject of her deeply personal lyrics she explained that baring her soul is a natural part of her songwriting process, “I have no choice. It’s what I do”. “This is my most vulnerable album to date,” says Pink, “On my first record, Can’t Take Me Home, I was pissed off at a guy and that was cathartic for me. Missundaztood was very personal and even more cathartic. Each record got a little deeper and more cathartic than the last. In two years I will probably have worked through all of my issues”.

ROLL UP, ROLL UP!
PINK
Please Don’t Leave Me was the second single release from Funhouse, and in typical Pink fashion, voices a painfully honest love song disguised by upbeat and cheerful melody with sing-along da-da-da-das in the background. “It’s like letting down the armour and

admitting I’m human. I’m a girl,” says Pink, “We all want to be loved and love. That’s all we want”. “I Don’t Believe You is also one of my favourite songs [from the album] because it’s just so naked. It’s like taking a deep breath and saying, ‘Here I am. Take me. Take your best shot.’” This summer saw the release of the single Funhouse from the current album. A totally infectious pop/rock track with a catchy chorus, it was an instant hit co-written by Pink with Tony Kanal of No Doubt and his writing partner Jimmy Harry.
Having already cruised through the UK earlier in the year, Pink is currently breaking tour records across Europe. Packing in over 250,000 fans at The O2 performances in the spring, Pink is now set to return to the UK for the second leg of the Funhouse Tour. David Campbell, CEO & President of AEG Europe says, “Pink is a multitalented singer/songwriter and of course, the ultimate rock chick! We can’t wait for her to bring back her infectious exuberance to The O2!” As Montgomery commented, “Pink is multifaceted; an amalgamation of many things and many eras, not easily categorized or digested,” and her show really is a reflection of this. Through her unique musical style, bold and captivating performance and refreshingly honest attitude, Pink holds the attention of every person in the arena. Crammed full of spectacular acrobatics; cutting edge choreography; breathtaking set design; dazzling lighting; classic rock covers; number one hits; sexy outfits; an infectious buzz; and one of music’s greatest voices – Funhouse is an absolute must-see show.

bells... Merry Xmas Everybody prepares to rock indigO2 with Slade, T-Rextasy and Mud II On 23 December IndigO2 will host the annual Merry Xmas Everybody concert, one of the UK's most beloved Christmas shows featuring Slade, T-Rextasy and Mud II. With their unique blend of perfect pop-rock'n'roll, outrageous flamboyance and pure fun, Slade have had no less than 23 Top 20 singles of which 6 were No.1 smash hits, and have become a firm favourite in the hearts of pop fans all over the world. The legends will be joined by T-Rextasy, the only band to have been authorised and endorsed by Marc Bolan's Catalogue Management and now officially recognised as the worlds best group dedicated to the greatest glam rocker of them all, Marc Bolan of T-Rex. With their uncanny doppelganger lead singer and guitarist, Danielz, T-Rextasy perform a powerful and mesmerising presentation of Marc Bolan's rock and pop anthems. Mud II completes the brilliant trio of bands at Merry Xmas Everybody. While the sad passing of Les Gray from Mud left a massive chasm on the '70s circuit, now the sounds and hits so well nurtured and performed by Les will continue, courtesy of his estate and members of the band who played and performed alongside him, as Mud II. The party opens with Mud II's massive worldwide smash Lonely this Christmas and many other Mud hits. Then T-Rextasy take to the stage with 45 minutes of all of Marc Bolan's songs including Metal Guru, Ride a White Swan, Hot Love and more. Their brilliant set will have you dancing (and singing) in the aisles and of course the whole evening will end with Slade’s massive Christmas hit, Merry Christmas Everybody which is annually re-released mid November each year and heard everywhere in the run-up to Christmas.

CLASSIC FM
CHRISTMAS SPECTACLE OF THE YEAR Indoor fireworks, world-class singers and 15,000 people uniting in carols. We find out what you can expect from The O2’s first Christmas Spectacular
T
here’s nothing better at Christmas than singing classic Christmas carols in a crowd of people, alongside a professional orchestra. At The O2 this month it’s a fairly epic version of that nostalgic Christmas scenario; envisage a crowd of 15,000 people, some of the world’s best singers and orchestras – and to finish, an indoor firework finale. But then it’s the least you can expect from a Raymond Gubbay production. Raymond Gubbay has been described as Europe’s “most successful opera promoter” (The Times) and whenever he organises a show, you just know it’s going to be good. Raymond has been the driving force behind the Classical Spectacular, the annual must-see event at the Royal Albert Hall, with opera greats and national orchestras performing to laser shows and special effects. Now Raymond has turned his hand to the Christmas songs, and this debut event at The O2 (in association with Classic FM) promises to conjure all the delights and excitement of the festive season. Producing at The O2 is an exciting challenge for Raymond. “It’s a completely different scale of venue, so the show will be very different from anything I’ve done before. The effects and indoor fireworks will be truly spectacular and as it will be held two days before Christmas, we want to get the audience really involved,” he explains. He predicts that his personal highlight will be getting the crowd to unite in carols and hopes to generate Mexican waves during the fireworks. But his biggest aim is to provide a family-friendly evening which people can remember long past the festive season. “It’s just great to hear the Christmas songs and to get children smiling and animated. In this troublesome and difficult world we live in, it’s great to be able to bring families together and create memorable moments,” adds Raymond. The event not only boasts Christmas magic and spectacle, but also a line-up packed with talent. Providing the lighting design is none other than Durham Marenghi, who lit the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympic Games. Popular musician and Classical FM radio presenter Myleene Klass will be
presenting the show and Anthony Inglis, one of the world’s most popular conductors, will be leading the choirs and orchestras in a Christmas tour-de-force. Expect rousing performances from established sopranos Alison Jiear and Stephanie Corley and tenor Jon Christos, who will be accompanied by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Also performing on stage will be two talented choirs, the Metro Voices and the Royal Choral Society. Virginia Edwyn-Jones, choir manager of the Royal Choral Society, says the choir has performed with Raymond before in the Classical Spectacular, and they are eagerly anticipating the Christmas event. “The highlight for us will be singing Silent Night in German with the arena lights dimmed. That should provide a wonderfully atmospheric, Christmassy moment,” she says. She thinks the event can appeal to anyone who loves Christmas but it also provides a perfect event to introduce children to a wider range of performances. “It’s really great to take children to and it introduces them to classical music. It sounds like such a cliché but there really is something for all the family.” Meanwhile Metro Voices are already Hollywood stars. They have sung in Hollywood blockbusters including Moulin Rouge, Pirates of the Caribbean and Stardust, alongside CDs by musical artists including Westlife, Elton John and Michael Jackson. Their director, Jenny O’Grady, still seems in awe of performing in a Gubbay show. “If it’s anything like the Classical Spectacular show then I can’t even describe it,” she pauses, “There are lasers and so many different special effects, you really just have to see one of his shows for yourself.” Her highlight will be hearing the audience unite in one voice, “I’ve never been in a room where 20,000 people have sung together – apart from at a rugby match maybe! It really will be very special and the atmosphere will be simply electric.” Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite and Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus will appeal to more traditional classical music
section head lovers, while contemporary fans can listen to live versions of the Wizzard hit I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday and Bobby Helms’ Jingle Bell Rock. The audience will join in for classic Christmas carols including O Come All Ye Faithful and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. Virginia (Royal Choral Society) describes it as “the perfect combination of songs for the audience to join in with and pieces for the choir to dazzle the audience.” Raymond hopes the Christmas Spectacular will become an annual event for The O2 and it’s certainly one way to add sparkle and magic to your Christmas celebrations. If you want to be part of a truly unique and breathtaking Christmas carol show, then there really is only one place to go this year. n

ONE NIGHT ONLY Paul McCartney is performing his only UK gig this year at the O2 and it couldn’t be a better time to catch the British icon in action, as Dominique Brady finds out
S
ome of the world’s greatest musicians have performed at The O2, but one icon of British rock has yet to dazzle fans there: Paul McCartney. But this month (in the last gig of his European tour and his only UK date this year), Macca will prove he’s still got what it takes to get pulses racing and thousands caterwauling along to Hey Jude. With a music career spanning almost 50 years, most people would be hard pressed not to have a few of Macca’s hits in their “Desert Island Disc” selection – one of the most popular acts in the history of British music, this is going to be a night to remember. On 22 December Paul will be mixing it up with songs from The Beatles, Wings and his most recent “electronica” collaboration The Fireman, for one of the most eagerly anticipated shows at The O2 this year. Fans will be crossing fingers and toes for their favourite hit to make an appearance from the vast catalogue. There can hardly be a more appropriate year for Macca to make an appearance at The O2. Beatles mania gripped London again this summer, with the 40th anniversary of their classic Abbey Road album. The eponymous road was jammed with fans imitating the classic album cover and traffic-stopping pose. Meanwhile younger fans took turns to imitate Ringo’s drumming or Lennon’s strumming on one of the Xbox’s most popular releases of the year, The Beatles: Rock Band game. However, Paul has never rested on his laurels and is just as relevant to the contemporary music scene. This year he performed I Saw Her Standing There alongside Foo Fighter frontman David Grohl at the Grammys, and had two Grammy nominations. He headlined the zeitgeisty desert-based Coachella Festival set in California along with The Killers, My Bloody Valentine and The Cure. And his gig at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas sold out in seven seconds, with a new sales record of 600 tickets being sold a second - not
bad for an artist who’s 67-years young. Whilst it will be his first public performance at The O2, it won’t be the first time he has played at the arena. Before his 2004 massive stadium tour, which culminated in headlining at Glastonbury, he secretly rehearsed at The O2 (then called The Millennium Dome). However, his cover was blown when a neighbour complained that Macca’s usually popular anthems were upsetting her cat! This time, Macca can be guaranteed a more rapturous response and he is also clearly looking forward to performing to the London crowds. “This is my chance to bring it home to where it all began. Starting in Hamburg, ending in London and rocking everywhere in between. I’m very much looking forward to ending this year on a high”. Meanwhile David Campbell (CEO of AEG Europe, owners and operators of The O2) seems more than a little star-struck at The O2’s musical conquest. “Paul McCartney is the dream act. I am absolutely thrilled the dream has become a reality for The O2 and this true British icon will play in the building”. Thousands of fans couldn’t agree more and expect every cat in Greenwich to wince as the fans unite in voice for some of the greatest songs in British rock history.n

CLAIRE SAUNDERS checks out the new offering from
Basement Jaxx, in the run-up to their epic live performance at The O2 this month THE BAND Together, Simon Ratcliffe and Felix Buxton are Basement Jaxx. Known around the world for recording several of Britain’s best-selling club house anthems, they have been a central part of the UK music scene for 15 years. The pair formed Atlantic Jaxx Records in 1994 and before long had a loyal following of fans including legendary DJ (and Basement Jaxx influence) Tony Humphries. A short while later the pair recruited vocalist Corrina Josephs (to work on their second release), who quickly became a close member of the boys’ team.
By 1995 the duo’s unique brand of music was being distributed by Virgin and the band was being noticed in both the American and British house community. Basement Jaxx spent much of 1996 working on remixes (for the Pet Shop Boys and Roger Sanchez among others) before releasing a third EP. They signed to the independent XL Recordings and released their debut full-length record, Remedy, in 1999. Their second album Rooty was released in 2001, followed by Kish Kash in 2003 and Crazy Itch Radio in 2006. The fifth album, Scars, was released earlier this year.

THE NEW RECORD: SCARS “There’s a good reason why the new record is called Scars. Making it has been a gruelling process. When we finished recording, it felt like we’d come out of a boxing ring.” Felix Buxton “Sometimes it felt like we were boxing ourselves and giving ourselves the scars. Lots of things changed, both in our personal lives and the world around us, and sometimes we felt a bit lost.” Simon Ratcliffe Scars, Basement Jaxx’s fifth album to date, is a return to 90’s dance music, the era when they produced tracks such as Red Alert, Romeo and Where’s Your Head At. Not surprisingly, given the band’s history, Scars features an impressive collection of guest vocalists, including Philadelphia MC Santigold, Paloma Faith, lesbian rappers Yo Majesty, Black And Gold singer Sam Sparro and the legendary Yoko Ono. “The idea was to do something that felt familiar and make a track for clubs,” says Simon. Working into the dance music vibe that brought about their rise to fame, the pair tapped IT’S IMPORTANT THAT PEOPLE LIKE WHAT WE back into the big, up-tempo club music DO” SAYS FELIX. “IF THEY DON’T, I’M NOT style. These epic HAPPY. WE’VE PUT A LOT OF EFFORT INTO THIS RECORD. IF PEOPLE DON’T LIKE IT, IT’S A club tunes are what they’re best at, and WASTE OF TIME. THERE ARE LOTS OF GREAT the tracks are exactly ARTISTS WHO MAKE GREAT MUSIC WHILE THEY what their loyal fans REMAIN IN THE BACKGROUND. HOWEVER, I hoped for. “Scars is DON’T WANT TO BE ONE OF THEM. very much back to the kind of thing we used Felix Buxton to do,” says Felix. “It’s something we haven’t done for a long time,” agrees Simon. “We’ve been avoiding it a bit because we were trying to do something different and because we were reacting to whatever else was out there. We were making music with no idea about where it fitted. But this year we started to want it to work for people as well, rather than just jerking off.” Despite the shift in musical taste over the last couple of years, the pair feels that it’s time for their uplifting club style to re-surface. “Over the last two years, it felt like the old scene that we came from – Armand Van Helden and Daft Punk – that all evaporated,” explains Felix. Whilst they developed their sound to fit the market, their dissatisfaction with the 2006 record Crazy Itch Radio, pushed them back towards their old style. When talking about their tour with Robbie Williams in 2006, Simon revealed that “it felt like we’d strayed too far into pop territory”. On the new record, Scars, the “punch-the-air chorus” and dance groove on lead single Raindrops is definitely what you’d call “vintage Jaxx”. Twerk is a lively house jam and Day Of The Sunflowers (March On) – featuring Felix’s surreal lyrics voiced by Yoko Ono over a muscular bass line – is one of the PERFORMANCES most ambitious sounds Felix and Simon have ever WILL BE HELD AT attempted. INSPIRATION During their recording sessions in New York, the pair found inspiration for their record that they weren’t expecting. Felix got into a messy argument with his partner in the street, so dramatic that a passer-by almost called the police. Amidst a complicated breakup, the upside was the musical result in the track Saga. “I went to the studio. I was quite angry. I had to
get it out of my system so I just laid something down really quickly. Santigold came in while I was doing it and she was like, ‘This is wicked, I’d like to sing this’.” And Felix wasn’t the only one to draw inspiration from his private life. Both Simon’s partner and newborn daughter were taken ill while in New York and had to be admitted to hospital. Simon got the call as he was recording Twerk with Yo Majesty. “I told them what was happening and they grabbed my hand and we joined in a circle to pray,” he recalls. “So we’re standing there and they’ve got their Jack Daniels and their spliffs and we’re saying prayers. It was surreal. That was the moment I think I realised having a child meant I had a whole new set of priorities.” As the record began to take shape and near completion, it was obvious that their product was deeper and darker than any previous work. Alongside events in their personal lives, changes at their studio in Loughborough Junction in South London influenced the record. “Lots of people moved out of the building as a result of the recession. The building’s quite grim now [and] not very inspiring,” says Simon. “There used to be a buzz in Brixton when we started, but that’s gone. All that’s left is reality.” But it’s not all bad news, and Basement Jaxx drew positive influence from the cutting-edge music played in the clubs and on the streets. During production of Scars, tracks such as the Soulwax mix of Kids by MGMT had brought a positive feeling back to the clubs. When the pair listened to Bonkers by Dizzee Rascal and Armand Van Helden they were inspired. “At last a track that sounded really alive, with Armand Van Helden doing what he always did,” enthuses Felix. “Dance music started to feel a bit more up. It felt like you could play songs with full vocals. It seemed like you could be happy in clubs again, which was good for us because traditionally our stuff has that feel good factor. We came out of our cloud and realised we wanted to make something that could be played in clubs. The whole thing started to feel much brighter.”

TEENAGE Miley Cyrus is unstoppable. After worldwide box office smash Hannah Montana: The Movie and the release of her third album The Time of Our Lives last month, the multi-talented teen sensation ends 2009 in style at The O2, Oliver balcazar discovers.
P
henomenal demand from Miley’s thousands of UK fans meant that extra dates had to be added for her long-awaited, firstever European tour. With a small army of back-up dancers, aerial theatrics and props including boats, tractors and motorcycles, the dazzling spectacle showcases the 16 year-old starlet’s successful transition from child star to talented young performer. “It’s definitely more mature,” says Miley, “...it’s super fun. It’s kind of for everybody”. Miley’s infectious energy and natural charm have catapulted her from “tween” stardom to global pop fame. While the 2006 Disney Channel hit show Hannah Montana first shone the spotlight on daughter of country crooner Billy Ray Cyrus, she is keen to develop herself as a credible artist and prove she’s not just a one-show pony. The Wonder World Tour stands in stark contrast to her 2007-08 US tour, in which she performed as both her TV alter ego Hannah and herself. Tickets sold out in less than four minutes and the Disney DVD is currently the best selling concert film of all time, grossing almost £45million. Raising her game, this all new production sees Miley finally rocking the stage as Miley. She performs the perfect mix of new album tracks, teenage anthems from triple-platinum debut Meet Miley Cyrus and follow-up Breakout, alongside hits from the hugely successful four Hannah Montana soundtracks. “These are things that I never could have done before and now I have the ability to do. As I get older I’ve been able to work a little harder [and] I’ve never had the confidence in myself to do this before. I would have said, ‘Oh, I don’t know if I could do that while I’m singing’. Now, I’m able to have the confidence and we have more resources”. The teen idol’s growing confidence certainly pulls a punch in this extravagant visual spectacle. The state-of-the-art show features Miley riding a Harley Davidson motorbike over the stage while covering Joan Jett’s I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll, and soaring above the crowd on wires for Fly on the Wall. “It’s got all these different types of styles into it. It’s definitely crazy. It’s a new, different world.” The show will also be a family affair, with older brother Trace supporting with his pop/rock band Metro Station, a hot act for 2010.
As a performer and a teenager, Miley’s identity is in transition. The emotional roller coaster of adolescence is reflected in her latest album; The Time of Our Lives follows on from last year’s Breakout, maturing Miley’s pop/ rock sound as both teen rock chick and power-ballad diva. Tracks like When I Look At You and Obsessed deal with the struggles of love and relationships as her lyrics become increasingly candid. “There shouldn’t be an age or a certain kind of cookie-cutter way of doing things. You can say what you want to. It’s about being an artist” she says. “I think I’ve been able to give myself more say. At first I was a little more afraid of what I could and what I could not say. I think about it anytime I write a song. I’m like, ‘why can’t I say that?’ Why can’t you say what you feel?” The very catchy first single Party in the U.S.A is an up-tempo, powerpop tune about Miley’s dID YOU KNOW...? experience of moving from She was nicknamed ‘Smiley’ as a child due to her constant her hometown Nashville beaming, which was later shortened to Miley. On 1 May 2008, to Los Angeles. It is her she officially changed her name from Destiny Hope Cyrus to best-performing song in Miley Ray Cyrus the US chart to date and Miley is the youngest artist ever to have had 4 Number 1 looks set to do the same albums on the US Billboard Chart across the Atlantic. Miley deleted her hugely popular Twitter account in October, She was also nominated claiming lack of privacy as the reason. “I want my private life for a Golden Globe earlier private”, Miley said in a video message to fans in the year for a duet with Miley is ranked #29 on the Forbes magazine list of the 100 John Travolta in animated most powerful celebrities of 2009 blockbuster Bolt, and her She recorded a song with the Jonas Brothers titled Before the role as a rebellious teen Storm for their fourth studio album Lines, Vines and Trying in 2010’s The Last Song, Times released earlier this year scripted by The Notebook author Nicholas Sparks is set to extend Miley’s acting range far beyond the teen sweetheart persona. With an estimated £17million already in the bank, her ambition knows no bounds. EXECUTIVE PRODUCER JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
T
hink of Eddie Izzard and you are most likely to picture the brilliantly surreal, cross-dressing comedy icon. But Eddie recently surprised everyone by swapping his trademark basque and stilettos for a tracksuit and trainers, running an astounding 43 marathons in 51 days. After raising over £200,000 for Sport Relief, he has now fully recovered and is touring the UK for the first time in six years, with his highly acclaimed show Stripped. While staying in what he calls “boy-mode” for the marathons, pointing out that “women don’t wear high heels when they run either,” the self-styled “action transvestite” continues his back-to-basics theme in Stripped. “The heels got too high on the last two tours. Now I’ve just gone back to blokey-mode, so I’ve got all this movement back which I couldn’t do before. The set is leaner, what I’m wearing is leaner and we’re just focusing on what I’m talking about.” The show sees Eddie’s unique insights on “everything that’s ever happened”. The vast array of topics (turned upside down in his true whimsical style) includes the historical proof of God’s non-existence and Wikipedia’s absurdities. “I keep talking about God and I come to all these different conclusions. I’m talking about the whole civilization, trying to strip that back, as well. I put out my idea of what we’re doing here. I think it’s all random. If there is a God, his plan is very similar to someone not having a plan.”
EDDIE IZZARD
MARATHON MAN
Get ready for a night full of laughter, with comedian Eddie Izzard. OLIVER BALCAZAR finds out more.
Running over 1,100 miles across the UK for charity is just one of the many 47-year-old’s accomplishments. Stripped’s five-week run in the West End sold out in under 48 hours last year, smashing box office records. The show came hot on the heels of Eddie’s epic sell-out tour across 34 US cities, including three nights at New York’s legendary Radio City Music Hall. Next year he’ll play arguably the biggest gig of his life on the main stage at Madison Square Garden. “It’s a scary prospect, but I’m used to it,” he says. Besides, “being frightened isn’t a terribly useful emotion”. Not bad for a former mime artist who won his first British Comedy Award in 1993 after 12 years of street performing and a hard slog around the minor comedy circuit. Eddie’s determination is relentless. The two-time Emmy winner appeared opposite Tom Cruise as a German general in Valkyrie and says that acting is his first love. Then there’s his long-term ambition for a political career. “I’ve said I will stand as an MP or MEP at some stage, in 10 to 15 years. I like to make long announcements. But at the moment, I’ve spent so long trying to get my career going I don’t want to throw it away.” With the last 5,000 years to contemplate, and now his latest marathon achievements, Stripped promises to be a must-see return to form for one of Britain’s most beloved comedians.

VOICE IN A MILLION
A CONCERT WITH A DIFFERENCE Four thousand singers from the nation’s most talented children’s choirs will take to The O2 stage not only to wow the audience with their musical prowess, but also to raise money to help children nationwide
S
ome of the world’s most famous and exclusive artists play at The O2 but this January the venue will host a concert which will make stars out of 4,000 ordinary children. The talented youngsters will get the experience of a lifetime as they take to the illustrious stage and sing to thousands. But what makes them true stars is that their singing efforts will not be for their own fame or fortune, but to raise awareness about the rising number of children waiting to be adopted nationwide and make their dreams a reality. Auditions have taken place across the country to cherry-pick the nation’s most talented young singers to sing in the Voice in a Million concert. Now, the young performers are busy putting the final touches to their repertoire of classic hits from artists including Diana Ross, Bill Withers and Dionne Warwick. During the show, audience members may want to grab their concert binoculars and see if they can spot the next Robbie Williams, Pixie Lott or Adele, because it’s almost guaranteed that Britain’s next generation of musical talent will be on that stage. One star in the making is Elliot Evans, the popular Britain’s Got Talent contestant. The ITV show gripped the country earlier this year and you can probably still remember sitting in shock as Elliot delivered a noteperfect rendition of Michael Jackson’s I’ll be there.
Although he left the show in the semi-finals, Elliot will be releasing the song as a charity single and the audience will get a sneaky peak of his version during the show. The night promises to entertain audiences, both young and old, with a magnificent choir, toe-tapping classics and celebrity presenters. But it has an even better feelgood factor when you realise the impact the night will have on thousands of unwanted children. Each of the 4,000 children in the choir will represent 4,000 children in Britain who are waiting to be adopted. Funds raised from the event will go towards the British Association of Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) and help them to find homes for the children who desperately need and deserve them. Celebrity narrators Rik Wakeman, Sinitta, Tony Anstis, Nicky Campbell and James O’Brien will also tell the audience more about the charity behind the concert. Piers Morgan is just one of a whole host of celebrities supporting the night. “Every child needs a loving family. If Voice in a Million results in just one child finding a new mum and dad and a secure family environment, it will be worth its weight in gold. It’s projects like this that can really make a difference,” he says. Similar concerts will be taking place across the globe and the final aim is to make a recording of 1 million children’s voices singing in harmony, with proceeds going towards projects that encourage adoption. Taking part in the London concert at The O2 will keep that festive feelgood factor running straight through to January – and could even change lives.

defy you not to sing and dance, and for the more adventurous, even moonwalk throughout this exhibition. Despite the poignant mood that many fans may enter with, it won’t be long before you’ll catch yourself mouthing the words to your favourite MJ tune and recreating that Jackson grab. Charting Michael Jackson’s career from his early success with the Jackson 5, up until his untimely death earlier this year, this collection of over 250 items will have something to capture every fan. The exhibition is divided into nine sections, each dedicated to a different area of Jackson’s life and career. Among countless music awards, platinum records, videos and legendary outfits, there are also many pieces that have never been seen before. In true MJ style, the exhibition has been elegantly decorated in black and chrome with huge iconic images of the man himself suspended from the ceiling. Items are displayed on a mirrored stage which, coupled with the constant stream of Jackson hits, creates the impression of being at a concert or looking up at a performance. As you walk through the exhibition you’ll pass sections devoted to areas such as his ‘Early Years’, ‘Dance’, and ‘Style’. The first object on view is the Jackson 5’s signed music contract that propelled a young Jackson onto his path to fame. Highlights include those infamous gloves, encrusted with Swarovski crystals and eagerly scribbled lyrics written in a moment of inspiration. There are a range of props, including the rocket used in the ‘Leave Me Alone’ video, life cast masks and objects from the 1988 ‘Moonwalker’ film. Jackson buffs will be impressed by Jackson’s own designs for the anti-gravity shoe, immortalised by the smooth criminal dance and that memorable 45° lean. This exhibition offers more than just a look at his career memorabilia with personal belongings on show too. We get a chance to see for ourselves the muchdocumented, eccentric side of MJ, with selective pieces from the Jackson estate. Those who wish to witness his lavish lifestyle and majestic tastes will not be disappointed. Why not take a wander under the Neverland arch and have a peek inside MJ’s 1967 Rolls Royce Phantom. Check out the King of Pop’s stunning jewellery collection, as well as his own crown, cape and throne, complimented by oil paintings of Jackson being knighted and crowned. Yet, not all emphasis is placed on glamour and regal outrageousness: there are far more sentimental features to consider. A flask which Jackson’s children would pack before each rehearsal is a definite tear-jerker. Equally touching is an affectionate letter from the then- president, Ronald Reagan, wishing Michael well after an onstage accident and commending him on his professional and charitable achievements. Throughout

the exhibition, moving quotes from friends such as Elizabeth Taylor and Madonna, as well as from Jackson himself add further resonance. All visitors also have the opportunity to leave their personal touch too, with remembrance books for fans to sign and leave messages that will be passed on to the Jackson family. Yet, for the most impressive and probably the most anticipated section, you’ll have to wait until the very end. The ill-fated ‘This Is It’ tour showcases some exclusive items that even hardcore MJ fans would not have seen. Here you can observe inches in front of you, the very clothes that were to be worn. Updates of classic Jackson costumes ranging from ‘Thriller’ to ‘Heal the World’, were planned to be revealed on stage: pulled from a simple white suitcase by the showman. The potential grandeur of the stage and set can be seen in miniature, as can clips of the rehearsals from sadly, what would have been, one of the greatest comeback tours in music history. However, despite this feeling of loss, you leave with a sense of elation, from both the infectious energy of his music and the reaffirmed appreciation of his unique talent. This exhibition, more than anything is a celebration of Jackson’s life and the rightful recognition of an innovative entertainer and a true legend of our time.n

NEVER SAY Discover Peter Pan’s magical world of Neverland at The O2 this Christmas So come with me, where dreams are born, and time is never planned. Just think of happy things, and your heart will fly on wings forever, in Never Never Land!
. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan is a fairytale loved by children throughout the ages, and across the globe. The story of a little boy who didn’t want to grow up, this magical adventure is the perfect entertainment for the festive season. A real treat for children, teenagers and adults alike, take this chance to leave London behind and make an unforgettable journey to Neverland with Peter, Wendy, John and Michael... Performed for a limited six-week period, Peter Pan is moving from Kensington Gardens to The O2 for Christmas. After a sell-out 16-week season to over 150,000 people (and prior to an epic 20-month tour of the USA from May 2010), this fantastical show is one of the “must-see” spectacles at The O2 this season. Performed in a purpose-built pavilion in the Meridian Gardens, Peter Pan will seat an audience of 1,350 for each show; a truly breathtaking sight, this speciallycommissioned 360-degree projected scenic design is being seen at The O2 for the very first time. In addition, this particular tour of Peter Pan at The O2 will incorporate changes to the production to be seen at the San Francisco opening in May – so audiences are being treated to the new, shiner version of the show. A second production will open in New Zealand in January 2011 marking the start of a Far Eastern tour, as the magical tale of “The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up” captures hearts around the world. n

STEAL THEIR Placebo are one of those bands that make you sit up and pay attention. Not only is the lead singer Brian Molko someone who would make you do a double take in the street, but his lyrics have always been controversial and far from mainstream. As is the case with all modern-day music heroes, their significance stretches far from just their guitar riffs but to the band’s image as a whole. Placebo’s look is that of androgyny, never straying far from a mascara wand or the allimportant guyliner. Their look is something that can be mirrored by both men and women, as designers this season, such as Galliano take a more feminine approach to the male tailored suit with ruffles akin to the new romantic look of the ‘80s; whereas Loewe takes feminine tailoring to a rough-edged leather-clad alternative. To pull off their look we love how they’ve broken up an all-black outfit with brown accessories and weathered boots. The man boot is great for winter and can be hidden under trousers whilst still providing that extra warmth and can be worn over jeans for an edgy look. Team it with a simple T-shirt and a waistcoat and the Alexander McQueen belt with a safety pin buckle that we are crazy about.

2.co .uk The 11th studio album from American rock legends Bon Jovi is a return to a more traditional rock sound, with big choruses and a “classic” Bon Jovi feel. As the band’s fifth album of the decade, the band’s search for something new led them to spend a lot of the time in the studio working on specific sounds with Grammywinning producer John Shanks. Whether it’s questioning their vitality in Fast Cars, or asking what the future holds in Work for the Working Man, the songs are all about finding a new direction in life in a positive way. From the lead single We Weren’t Born To Follow to the powerful When We Were Beautiful, the songs are uplifting, anthemic and see Bon Jovi at their best.

Foo Fighters, Greatest Hits Foo Fighters are one of the biggest bands of their generation, selling millions of records worldwide and gaining a reputation for gutsy guitar music–often with a sense of humour and always with an incredibly catchy hook. Since his days drumming in Nirvana, Dave Grohl has grown into a rock ‘n’ roll icon and this Greatest Hits collection shows exactly why Included are all the best tracks from 1995’s self-titled debut through to the band’s sixth effort Echoes, Silence, Patience And Grace. Tracks like Everlong, Monkey Wrench, My Hero, Times Like These & Best Of You join two new tracks, Wheels & Word Forward, both produced by rock legend and former Nirvana producer Butch Vig. www.foofighters.com
JLS, JLS The X Factor sensations follow their charttopping single Beat Again with this polished debut album. Their roguish good looks and cheeky nature (the name stands for “Jack The Lad Swing”) have seen JLS swooned over by teenage girls across the nation and this set of catchy pop tracks, infused with RnB and hip-hop, looks set to catapult them to even greater levels of fame. Produced by Syco stable regular Steve Mac, the album includes the aforementioned Beat Again as well as second single Everybody In Love. www.jlsofficial.com

The second album from the former X Factor winner comes exactly two years after her Brit–nominated and three-time Grammynominated debut Spirit catapulted Leona to international superstardom. That album sold over 6.5million copies, meaning that expectations for the follow-up are huge and nothing has been left to chance. A line-up of massive names from the pop world including Ne-Yo, Ryan Tedder, Max Martin and Justin Timberlake have been enlisted to write and produce with Leona co-writing several of the album’s tracks including the first single Happy. Echo also includes a stunning cover of Oasis hit Stop Crying Your Heart Out. www.leonalewismusic.co.uk

SINGLE OF THE MONTH!
To coincide with World Aids day on 1 December, Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy is releasing charity single One At A Time, with all proceeds going to HIV prevention projects through MTV’s Staying Alive Foundation. “This track comes straight from the heart,” says the 28 year-old singer/ songwriter, who wrote the single while travelling across South Africa, India and the Philippines as a Staying Alive Foundation Ambassador. “It encompasses everything that I saw and felt on the trip. I met some amazing and inspiring young people – and this track is dedicated to them and their tireless and selfless commitment to the fight against HIV and AIDS”. Founded in 2004, The Staying Alive Foundation provides grants to youth-led, grassroots initiatives that are committed to educating their peers, fighting stigma and discrimination, and empowering other young people to protect themselves against HIV. “I just hope that it’ll inspire others out there to get involved in whatever way they can. It really doesn’t take much to make a difference.” A documentary following Travis on his tri-continental journey, Travis McCoy’s Unbeaten Track will air on MTV to coincide with the single release. One At A Time is available on iTunes from 1 December and from other major online music retailers 8 December.
game zone We review this month’s best games releases
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 It’s finally here – the much touted and hyped sequel to the gaming phenomenon that was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, but can it match the expectation? The answer is most definitely a testosterone pumping yes! Building on the critically acclaimed and much-loved (over 13million copies sold) original, developers Infinity Ward have outdone themselves with Modern Warfare 2; producing a lovingly crafted and truly spectacular gaming experience. For those familiar with the original, the sequel’s campaign mode follows the same parallel story pattern, taking you through a series of missions in the role of both US Army Rangers and Task Force 141 special forces troops, all participating in a larger Tom Clancy-esque convoluted plot. The campaign mode itself is relatively short, and unlikely to occupy you for more than six hours, but they will be six exhilarating hours extremely well spent. The globe-spanning storyline takes you on a mind-blowing journey across a variety of gloriously depicted backdrops from Middle Eastern cities, the grimy favelas of Rio de Janeiro, the caves of Afghanistan and many more. As did its prequel, Modern Warfare 2 creates a truly immersive and visceral experience in every detail, as well as some magnificent set pieces such as a running gunfight on snowmobiles culminating in a very Bond-like leap off a ski jump to reach your extraction chopper! Despite the brevity of the campaign, Modern Warfare 2 has two more aces up its sleeve: the first of these is the Special Ops mode – a series of story-independent missions with very different objectives and play-styles which can be played solo or co-operatively. Where the game really shines, however, is in the online multiplayer mode. Based on its predecessor, the system of earning experience, and thus new equipment and skills, has been tweaked and improved to provide more depth and less frustration. New weapons and weapon combinations have been added, and the variety available in creating your own class has increased massively. While this means an obscene amount of time is needed to fully explore what’s on offer, it also means Modern Warfare 2 will have fresh content and challenges for the dedicated gamer for a long time to come. Overall it’s very hard to find fault with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and except for a sporadically murky plot and some trivial graphical issues, this is a game I would heartily recommend to any fps fan. Available on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC

The game offers a host of play options, from one-off matches to scripting your own storyline, which can run for years of gametime, and can even be uploaded for sharing with others. For those who want a more serious challenge than the AI provides, there is of course the option to challenge other players online. The pace of the combat is enjoyably fluid, although some minor graphical glitches do occur and the controls can on occasion be somewhat frustrating. WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2010 will offer an entertaining romp for most gamers, but for true aficionados of WWE wrestling, this title is not to be missed. Available on Xbox 360 and PS3

Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure Let your imagination take flight in an enchanting new motion picture starring the world's most beloved fairy. As the fairies of Pixie Hollow prepare to bring autumn to the mainland, changing the colours of leaves and helping geese fly south for the winter, they must use a precious moonstone to restore the Pixie Dust Tree – the source of all their magic. But when Tinker Bell accidentally puts all of Pixie Hollow in jeopardy and breaks the moonstone, she must venture out across the sea, far north of Neverland, on a secret quest to create the famous Fall Scepter. Tink braves an astonishing new world and discovers the greatest treasure of all. The film boasts beautiful CGI animation and a number of celebrity voices, including Lucy Liu, Jesse McCartney, and Anjelica Houston.
Sam (Shia LaBeouf) is trying to concentrate on his college studies, enjoying a vague “chosen one” status among the Autobots, with Mikaela (Megan Fox), his girlfriend, who's not only beautiful but handy with a wrench. The Decepticons continue to spearhead a destructive campaign against the earthlings and their Autobot protectors. With eye-popping visual effects and dramatic set pieces, this instalment manages to be an even bigger spectacle than the first, which is saying a lot for a film about giant robots that turn into cars. Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs Manny, Sid, Diego, and Ellie are back in the third film of the computeranimated Ice Age series. With the beloved creatures in starring roles, fans also get another dose of the vocal talents of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, and Queen Latifah, who are joined by Shaun of the Dead’s Simon Pegg. Manny and Ellie are expecting their first baby, while Sid the sloth tries an unconventional way of starting a family that gets him into trouble. With all this talk of babies, Diego might be losing his saber-toothed edge, but a journey to save Sid may just turn the whole group into heroes. In addition to all that adventure, it wouldn’t be an Ice Age film if Scrat weren’t on a desperate hunt for an acorn, but he might get distracted by a shapely female squirrel. DIRECTOR: CARLOS SALDANHA RELEASED: 23 NOVEMBER
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Michael Bay follows up 2007's adaptation of the cartoon/toy franchise, as the epic battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons rages on, and as usual, it's the humans who are caught in the crossfire. Since destroying Megatron,

With the help of the new Defence against the Dark Arts Professor, Horace Slughorn, Harry unlocks the mystery of how to stop Voldemort once and for all. Avatar Set in the 22nd century on a moon planet called Pandora, Avatar is the story of peaceful alien race, the Na’vi, defending their homeland against human invasion. Covered in lush jungle landscape and dangerous wildlife, Pandora is uninhabitable by humans, so they genetically engineer human/Na’vi hybrids known as Avatars that are controlled via a mental link. When paralysed marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) volunteers to go to Pandora to exist as an Avatar, he falls in love with fearless Na’vi princess Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and becomes caught up in the conflict between her people and the human military that is brutally consuming the Na’vi world.team
This action-packed adventure sees Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic hero brought to the big screen without the stuffy tweed suit and austere Victorian image. Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and partner Dr Watson (Jude Law) must outwit an all new adversary, Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong), who threatens to destroy the world with his satanic plans. Rachel McAdams is the enigmatic Irene Adler, the only woman ever to have bested Holmes, who maintains a fiery relationship with him. Guy Ritchie is no stranger to portraying London’s criminal underworld and reinvents Holmes as a bare-knuckled fighting action hero with extraordinary intuitive skill and powers of deduction.
