We want to hear from you! How far have you travelled? Who is your favourite artist of all time? What do you love about The O2? Keep an eye out to see if we mention you... Hi to The O2!

Dear Venue,

Dear Venue,

Hi Venue Magazine,

My ticket for Britain’s Got Talent says “Doors 6.30”. Does that mean the show starts at 6.30pm?

I came to The O2 to see Bon Jovi (great gig by the way!), but I was wondering why the top of my bottle was removed when I bought a bottle of water? I’m 63 so unlikely to throw it at anyone!

I live in Greenwich and was wondering if there is anything for kids to do at The O2? I’ve got a 5-year-old and a 6-yearold and am trying to fill up their summer holidays!

How can I get the best seats for events at The O2 arena? I want get right up front, but by the time I book those seats are usually gone.

Thanks Amanda, Kent Dear Amanda, The time stated on your ticket as “Doors” is the time the doors for The O2 arena will be open for the event. This happens in advance of the show, starting to allow everyone to enter and find their seats. For running times for any event, check out the events page on our website www.theo2.co.uk or ring our information line on 0208 463 2000. The O2, and outside the arena, including the restaurants and Bars on Entertainment Avenue, are open from 9am.

Thanks Daniel, Hertfordshire Dear Daniel,

Hi Lucinda

Caps or tops are removed as a safety requirement. This is because when trodden on, a plastic bottle with the top intact does not crush but acts as a roller, therefore becoming a potential threat to people’s safety (particularly in the event of an evacuation). A sealed bottle containing liquid can also be used as a heavy missile (not just by the owner but by someone who might pick it up) – without the cap the liquid can escape in flight. Our guests’ comfort and safety is of the utmost important to us, and such The to y a d procedures th ir B Happy 3rd azing m a are in n a t a h O2 arena.W een to place to b ve a h I . e m success story so assure st Ju ws there. n e se this. over 80 sho ve a h sI

DREAM TEAM The Co-operative, the UK’s fifth largest retailer, has partnered with the British Music Experience in a commitment to inspire and educate children over the UK through music. The three year title sponsorship promises to deliver 15,000 free tickets to the nation’s youth over the duration of the partnership, through a combination of promotional activity in The Co-operative stores, digital awareness, experiential activity and through The Co-operative’s partnerships with schools. With the British Music Experience’s focus on informing visitors about the history, science and culture of popular music, it’s the perfect platform to educate and inspire youngsters about Britain’s musical heritage. The new partnership is part of a pledge from The Co-operative to use £11 million to help young people on the path to success.

The Co-operative’s Chief Executive Peter Marks is excited about the alliance; “Our Inspiring Young People programme will aim to help unlock the potential that is so evident across the country. The British Music Experience is dedicated to inspiring young people through music so we’re delighted to partner with them on creating experiences and opportunities for young people.”

FACES GABY ROSSLIN SSIBLE” “MISSION IMPO AT The O2 Gaby Roslin, celebrated TV presenter and co-host of BBC London 94.9 breakfast show, and Josh Hardie, head of Corporate Responsibility at Tesco, are taking part in the first ever abseil held in The O2 arena. Their nerves will be tested by a drop of over 100ft, but fantastic views should help them on their way. The abseil will take place on Sunday 22 August to support children with cancer. The groundbreaking abseil can be completed head first in a thrilling ‘Mission Impossible’ style or feet first, and is raising money for children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent – Tesco Charity of the Year 2010. It is one of hundreds of events being staged during the year to help Tesco and CLIC Sargent achieve their goal of raising £5m to fund specialist children’s cancer nurses. Patron of CLIC Sargent and mum of two, Gaby, has volunteered to be the first to take part in the challenge. “CLIC Sargent is a fantastic charity, and provides amazing support for children, young people and their families who are affected by childhood cancer,” said Gaby. “Although the abseil is going to be quite terrifying and I’m going to get a never-seen-before view of inside The O2 arena, it really is for a fantastic cause.” The charity has dedicated Social Care Teams based at Great Ormond Street Hospital, University College London Hospital and the Royal Marsden Hospital helping families from in and around the Greater London area who have a child with cancer.

The magical world of In the Night Garden arrives at The O2’s Meridian Gardens

I

n the Night Garden is a magical place that exists between waking and sleeping in a child’s imagination. The BBC television show has been described as a modern interpretation of a nursery rhyme picture-book, featuring a host of wonderful characters, living together within a happy and caring community. It has received phenomenal success in the UK with high

ratings, awards and press accolades since its launch. In Spring 2007 it won Best Preschool Programme 2010 at the Broadcast Awards, BAFTAs for Best Preschool Live Action 2007 and 2008 and has sold over 1 million DVDs, 2.5 million books and 4.4 million plush toys in the UK alone. TV sales now total 35 countries including Canada, Australia, Spain and China, with this truly global show being translated into 19 languages. Now the global phenomenon finds a home at The O2’s Meridian Gardens, in the first-ever staged event of the acclaimed television show. In The Night Garden Live is a spectacular and innovative musical theatre experience for the whole family. This is the first time that children and parents will be able to see the iconic In the Night Garden and its much-loved characters Igglepiggle, Upsy Daisy and Makka Pakka in a live event. The characters will be brought to life with full-size costumes, enchanting music, magical puppets and spectacular panoramic projections, creating an immersive theatrical experience to make audiences feel they are actually entering the magical world of In the Night Garden. Visually stunning, In The Night Garden is created in an inflatable, purpose-built touring theatre made up of two impressive, state-of-the-art show domes, which faithfully recreate the magical world of this hugely popular children’s television show. “The creative challenge was to not only transport the audience into the world of In the Night Garden, but also to create a fully practical experience for families with young children,” says acclaimed theatre producer Andrew Collier, who’s worked for almost a year to bring the TV show to the stage. “We’re delighted to be bringing In The Night Garden to London this August. The Meridian Gardens at The O2 are the perfect riverside setting for a great family day out.” The show domes will have all the facilities of a regular theatre – including box office, toilets and catering points – but these will be uniquely familyfriendly with buggy parks, baby-changing areas and

microwaves to heat up baby food. The auditorium will have just 500 seats, providing excellent sightlines and proximity to the stage for all audience members. Families will have the choice of two shows during the run (each with a different story), with up to five performances a day to suit every family’s schedule and a highly competitive ticket pricing scheme. There are two different shows to choose from – each one lasts an hour and follows a different story, starring all your favourite characters. You can choose which one to see – or even see both! Bringing his unique style from the television show is celebrated creator and composer of In the Night Garden, Andrew Davenport. “I’m thrilled at plans for an In the Night Garden Live experience for children and their families that sets out to match the celebrated quality and high production values of the television series. I hope that In The Night Garden Live will become a memorable experience for children up and down the country.”

BON JOVI

ROOFTOP ROCK Bon Jovi kicked off their 12-date residency at The O2 in epic style by performing live on the iconic rooftop. We look back at the phenomenal success of the legendary band’s Circle Tour shows

O

nly the biggest bands can think the unthinkable. On 24th June 2007, Bon Jovi opened The O2 arena, setting the standard of world-class artists who would come to define this epic stage. On returning to begin their historic 12-date residency in June 2010, the band marked the occasion with a very special event. They took to The O2 roof for a unique performance that was beamed live onto Peninsular Square’s High Definition Screen for fans in front of the venue. Bon Jovi treated London to a special preview with 4 songs from their world tour set list, while their temporary home city stretched out around them. They rocked 58 metres above the ground, as high as Nelson’s Column and with spectacular views of the London skyline. Helped up there by trained mountaineers, the New Jersey boys blasted out tracks We Weren’t Born To Follow and Superman Tonight from latest smash hit

2

album The Circle, then all time classics It’s My Life and You Give Love A Bad Name. The band also re-dedicated the Lyric Wall; a unique giant wall inside the VIP lounge at The O2. The mammoth sized canvas represents the only venue on earth where a single band’s lyrics are embedded into the building. As much as any club, theatre or stadium is in the world, The O2 is very much Bon Jovi’s UK home! While other artists of their generation slow down, Bon Jovi are hitting their peak. They played to well over 189,000 fans throughout June, more than the crowd at Glastonbury (177,500) and the 3 day Hard Rock Calling festival in Hyde Park combined (160,000). Although they’ve become the quintessential stadium rockers, front man Jon Bon Jovi, who’s been married to his high-school sweetheart Dorothea for 20 years, disclosed before the rooftop show that he dislikes being away from home because he misses his family. “It’s horrible when you are away touring, it’s terrible - you

are away from everyone and it can be for long periods, but so are travelling salesmen and soldiers.” Bon Jovi drummer, Tico Torres singled out The O2’s acoustics as his main memory from opening night in June 2007. “The sound was really good. The key to arenas is to build sound that’s good for music, but years ago arenas were built for sport, not music, which meant a lot of them have terrible sound. We play a lot of arenas and they’ve got it right at The O2. That’s important to us as musicians.” “London is a great place to be, but you don’t always get a chance to see things when you’re on tour. It’s like New York, where there’s always something to do. I really enjoy coming over and I’m looking forward to this trip a lot. I want to see a bit of tennis at Wimbledon and hope to play a bit of golf at Sunningdale.” From the centre of a circular stage, with a crescentshaped video wall behind them, Bon Jovi blasted through a blend of classic tracks throughout their residency at The O2, as well as songs from their hugely successful album The Circle and a few numbers from their Noughties foray into country music. The staging was spectacular, notably several dozen video screens, which began as a box around the band, shifted location for almost every song and turned into stairs, then a raised walkway during We Got It Going On. The Circle Tour featured over 70 different songs from 11 studio albums including 8 covers during their run of shows including Roy Orbison’s Pretty Woman, The Who’s Squeezebox and Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones. “There was also a great vibe coming off the audience, and as a band you feed off that energy. They were great shows,” says Torres. AEG Live’s Rob Hallett, promoting for the residency,

comments: “When Jon Bon Jovi opened The O2 with the words, ‘Hello London, welcome to your new home,’ little did he realise that we were already plotting to make it his new home! Bon Jovi are the best live band in the World.” With over 120 million albums sold, countless awards and stellar stadium shows year after year, Bon Jovi have little more to conquer. The band has performed more than 2,600 concerts in over 50 countries for more than 34 million fans. Bon Jovi are always at their best when they are on the move and that is truer now than ever before! n

ith their huge success after winning Britain’s Got Talent 2009, Diversity will be strutting their stuff at the indigO2 this summer to encourage youth groups to perform, no matter what their experience or ability. Dance For Life 2010 is a project created by the Red Cross, with all proceeds going to help people in crisis, both in the UK and overseas. With ages ranging from 14 to 27, Diversity came together as a group to show how important dancing can be to express yourself, and now they want to help more kids across the UK to turn towards it. “We are proud to support the Dance For Life project as it’s a great opportunity for young people to enjoy dance and performance. We hope you will be part of Dance For Life 2010.” This event is open to schools, colleges, dance groups and youth groups, and creates a unique

chance for young people to perform their very own dance routine in front of an audience. The groups will also be judged and the winners will win an exciting opportunity to compete in the final competition. Entries to Dance For Life will be split into two categories: under 11s and 12–18 year olds. Groups will be judged on four key elements: concept, choreography, costume and entertainment. The judges are hoping to see the Red Cross theme in each routine, as well as creative hair, make-up and costumes that represent the group’s dance to its full potential. The British Red Cross is a volunteer-led, humanitarian organisation that helps people in crisis across the world. And through Dance For Life, they want to help prove to kids across the country that dancing is not only fun, but also a great way to define themselves, no matter what their background or abilities are.

BACKSTAGE AT The 2

O

Take your Best Shot

He’s snapped some of the biggest icons in the music industry, from U2 and Oasis to Morrisey, the White Stripes and Radiohead, but photographer Andy Willsher rarely gets starstruck by his commanding subjects

A

s he prepares to shoot in the iconic setting of The O2, we meet the man who gets up close and personal to the greatest musical mavericks of our time.

How long have you been shooting musicians? I’ve been shooting professionally for 18 years. I never studied photography and have no formal qualifications or training, so my technique developed as I went along. It’s definitely not the conventional route to the job, but I’ve always been passionate about live music and that’s where everything started for me. Music venues used to be a lot less strict about security, so I’d sneak into gigs with my camera to photograph the performing acts. Did you ever want to study photography? Most people I’ve known who finish a photography course get disillusioned or focus on a very narrow aspect. I knew I had a passion for music and didn’t want it to burn out in the classroom. After a couple of normal jobs after leaving school, I carried on taking photos at gigs in the evenings. NME was the first magazine to actually ask me to shoot musicians and I’ve been working there ever since. How well do you know the musicians you photograph? I’m a huge music fan, so I’m generally familiar with the majority of the artists I work with. I’m lucky since I can request musicians to shoot, so my portfolio just ends up mirroring my record collection. If I’ve listened to a band, then I can usually tell what kind of look and style they’re going for. The greats like Thom Yorke or Ian Brown are always amazing, but sometimes the energy of a new band blows you away. What’s your favourite kind of setting to shoot in? I’ll always love photographing live bands and audiences. It’s almost hyper-real when a performer jumps through the air, and it lasts a split second; capturing that moment makes it last forever. The buzzing atmosphere means anything can happen and you’re at the mercy of stage lighting. Gigs can take place anywhere, from a small club to a huge site like Glastonbury, and they all need to be approached differently. The environment of a festival is nothing

2

like shooting in a venue. At festivals the weather affects you, you have a mixture of light sources, and you need different lenses too. Studios are a completely different ball game – usually you have more time and can control the lighting. It may end up more manufactured, but I always try to keep a raw element to the photos. How would you describe your photographic style? My brief is always to make the artist look the best they can. I prefer a more documentary-style quality to photographs, but do a lot of studio work too. I meet bands who have almost always been touring non-stop and they’re exhausted or restless, but most of the time they want to photographed, as they know it’s good press. Once they realise I’m there to help them look their best, they cooperate and trust me enough to give me more of a visual insight. I’ve got a collection of images of bands that should never see the light of day! But that side of the music lifestyle isn’t really what I’m interested in portraying. Have you ever been star-struck by your subject? To be honest, I’m focused on getting the best shot

possible to get too intimidated by the musicians. As I said, I’m a huge music fan anyway, so of course I was intimidated when photographing Morrisey. He’s got this reputation of being tough to shoot, but he was such a surprise on the day. He was really friendly and came over to ask if everything was going well during the shoot, which artists rarely do. What will you be working on at The O2? Mainly crowd shots. It’s great when you get to capture someone’s pure enjoyment at seeing their hero onstage. I’ve just finished shooting crowds at the Black Eyed Peas gig at The O2. They were in absolute rapture throughout the night and I got some great shots. What advice would you give to any aspiring music photographers? Practise a lot. The digital camera revolution means that anyone can call themselves a music photographer, so to stand out you’re going to have to present something different –a unique and interesting perspective. There are gigs in every town across this country, so there are no excuses. Practise, practise, practise!n To check out more of Andrew’s work, visit www.andywillsher.com

Music Zone This month we are listening to...

Kylie Minogue Aphrodite Pop superstar Kylie Minogue follows 2007’s X with a stylishly sensual array of melodies and seductive beats. Since the late 1980s, Kylie has been one of the pivotal figures in music, and her reign over dance floors across the world shows no sign of ending with this latest offering. The pulsing lead single, All The Lovers, proved that her trademark sugar-coated vocals sound as fresh as ever, which is sure to please both long-time Kylie lovers as well as newcomers. Enrique Iglesias Euphoria

Bombay Bicycle Club Flaws

Arcade Fire The Suburbs

He’s sold more than 60 million records worldwide since launching his music career in 1995, but Latino heartthrob Enrique Iglesias is back with his ninth studio album. Half the tracks on Euphoria are in English, the other half in Spanish. First English single, I Like It, features Lionel Richie reprising the chorus of his 1983 hit All Night Long. Other guests include Akon, Nicole Scherzinger and Puerto Rican reggaeton duo, Wisin and Yandel.

Recorded just days after the band put the finishing touches to debut LP, I Had The Blues but I Shook Them Loose, acclaimed indie rockers Bombay Bicycle Club present this new acoustic album. Neill MacColl (guitarist Jamie’s dad) produced a handful of the 11 tracks, but the rest of Flaws was recorded in singer Jack Steadman’s bedroom and produced by Jack himself.

The highly anticipated third album by indie rock collective Arcade Fire, fronted by husband and wife duo Win Butler and Régine Chassagne. Like 2007’s Neon Bible, The Suburbs was produced by the group in collaboration with Markus Dravs (Coldplay/Bjork), and was written and recorded over two years in Montreal and New York. The multi-instrumentalists are set to première new tracks at their festival performances over the summer.

Game zone Set in the dying days of the American Wild West, Red Dead Redemption is an epic battle for survival in a beautiful open world, as Ryan Cope finds out Living in the Wild West of America during 1911, John Marston is one roughneck battle-hardened, tough son-of-a-gun, who’s spent his life murdering and pillaging. Times change though, and he’s given up his past and gone straight in search of redemption. However, when federal agents track him down and force him to go in search of his old gang members, Marston must prepare himself once again to face the wild and bloody nature of the West. Created by the legendary developers Rockstar, the name behind the hugely popular Grand Theft Auto IV, Red Dead Redemption puts you into the boots of slick gunslinger John Marston, and allows you free roam of the huge, fabricated state of New Austin. Not only is the story engaging and wonderfully woven together, but the characters are also memorable, realistic and have very impressive voice acting and scripting. The graphics are beautiful and accurate, while the sound effects and music are fitting and immerse you in the world of the Wild West. The gameplay has built and improved upon that of GTA IV. The shooting mechanics are much more slick and accurate, as is the cover system, and the inclusion of the new ‘dead eye’ mode (which allows you to slow down time and shoot specific parts of an enemy) makes gameplay more exciting and variant. Just like any Rockstar game, following the main story isn’t the only fun you can have. There are plenty of side quests, leisure activities and casual exploring to be done. However, the mini games are fewer than those seen in the previous GTA IV, but still bring their own style of enjoyment. Treasure hunting, poker, blackjack, animal hunting (you can skin the pelts and sell them for money), and bounty hunting are just a few. One of the greatest features of Red Dead is the random events creator. While riding through the vast and huge land that is open to you, certain problems will randomly happen. These will vary from a wagon being held up by bandits, to someone’s horse being stolen, or a helpless traveller being chased by wolves. These events, which you can choose to intervene upon in whatever way you like, give the game and the land a

feeling of realism, making it a living, breathing world. Overall, Red Dead Redemption is the crown jewel of Rockstar. With a story, world and characters that capture your imagination, heart and attention throughout, it is truly a wonderful experience.

GRAB A BITE AT The O2

EAT TO THE BEATS

G

iven that the catering in most British music venues is limited to warm beer, limp hot dogs and two varieties of peanuts (if you’re lucky), you’ll be knocked sideways at the sheer availability and choice on offer at The O2. The world

is your oyster... or indeed your chicken Caesar Salad, or your rib-eye steak, or your Thai green curry, or your flame grilled burger, or... you get the picture. Whatever your culinary leanings, here’s our look at the bars and restaurants on Entertainment Avenue at The O2’s.

THAI SILK

GAUCHO

PIZZA EXPRESS

S&M GREAT BRITISH GRUB

Entertainment Avenue’s answer to authentic Thai cuisine at a feelgood price – Thai Silk’s Signature Lunch at just £5.95, and Early Bird Special for only £7.95 – combines the deliciously appetising elements of Thai food with warm and efficient customer service.

This exclusive sanctuary is spread over three floors and features a cocktail lounge with a luxurious sunken seating area, a restaurant adjoined by a sumptuous balcony lounge overlooking the bustling crowds entering the arena.

Freshly handmade Classic and Romana pizzas prepared in an open kitchen, served with a cold beer, glass of good wine or a variety of soft drinks – it has to be Pizza Express.

A traditional British café serving hearty portions of your favourite comfort food ‘just like grandma used to make!’ at very affordable prices. They open at 9am, so you can have an early morning mug of tea or a full English to set you up for the day.

UNION SQUARE

GARFUNKEL’S

THE SLUG AND LETTUCE

RODIZIO RICO

The fabulous new Union Square – boasting the most extensive wine list anywhere in The O2 – will definitely fit the bill. The menu offers delicious homemade burgers, scrumptious steaks and irresistible desserts like Knickerbocker Glory.

A truly great name in British and world cuisine. Founded in London’s West End in 1979, Garfunkel’s has become a legendary eatery. It embraces the concept of being all things to all people, and epitomises all that is great in the world of food.

Come in and enjoy this fabulous bar in Entertainment Avenue at The O2. Whether you are here for a concert, seeing a film, or you just want a drink, the tasty menu has all your gastronomic needs fully covered.

Everything at Rodizio Rico is expertly grilled to keep it succulent and full of flavour. If you have a preference for how your meat is cooked, just let one of the passadors know and they will offer you cuts from either the outside of the skewer so it’s well done, or from the centre if you prefer your meat rare.

WASABI

FRANKIE & BENNY’S

INC CLUB

STARBUCKS

For the best in Japanese cuisine, come to Wasabi and enjoy the wide range of fresh, high-quality sushi and hot dishes available. The double-decker conveyor belt gives customers the choice of fresh, hot steamed dim sum, tempura and Japanese noodle and rice dishes.

Combining the best of classic American and Italian in both décor and cuisine, Frankie and Benny’s serve superb pizza, pasta, steaks, grilled sandwiches and American pancakes for brunch. Their breakfast menu tastes even better with the 2 for £10 promotion.

The Inc Club is a cut above the rest, with regular nights featuring top promoters such as Poshfunk, Rampage and Allure. Their aim is to keep things classy with a lush VIP section, beautifully upholstered seating and a hot dance floor.

Fancy a classic cappuccino or smooth latte before a show? Then step into Starbucks, where an incredible array of the finest, handcrafted coffee and espresso drinks are waiting to invigorate and unwind.

AMERICAN BAR & GRILL

WATER MARGIN

ZIZZI

NANDO’S

Situated in the entrance to the left of the arena, this spacious and stunningly designed venue prides itself on serving the best US cuisine this side of the pond, with a menu that captures every flavour, from New York Strip Steak to Grilled Alaskan Salmon.

Water Margin is a stylish oriental restaurant that incorporates two types of dining under one roof, each at an affordable price. Upstairs is the renowned, fixedprice buffet restaurant, which offers a choice of more than 30 dishes at lunchtime and 60 in the evening.

Zizzi loves simple Italian cookery - pizza, pasta, salads, risotto, carne, pesce (that’s meat and fish) cooked in the authentic Italian style. Using only the freshest, in season ingredients, signature dishes have become much-loved classics, and they’re always dreaming up new ones.

Nando’s speciality is succulent, Portuguese, flame-grilled PeriPeri chicken served in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Marinated for 24 hours in the natural sauce, come and satisfy your burning desire for spicy chicken!

SPUR STEAK & GRILL

LAS IGUANAS

HA HA BAR & GRILL

A family restaurant specialising in ribs, burgers and steak. For the non-carnivore, great vegetarian options are available. The spacious seating and children’s activity area means you can relax while the kids having fun in a safe environment.

Authentic South American dishes cooked fresh to order with plenty of Latin passion, from Mexican street food to Brazilian classics. Las Iguanas also offers a lively bar serving up a great cocktail selection.

The casual dining restaurant, Ha Ha is where skilled chefs cook your order to perfection, on a sizzling open grill. Their wine, beer and cocktail lists are equally extensive, making it also a great venue to enjoy a drink both before and after the show.
