We want to hear from you! How far have you travelled? Who is your favourite artist of all time? What do you love about The O2? Keep an eye out to see if we mention you... Dear The O2,

Hi Venue Mag,

Hi The O2,

Hey Venue,

I recently bought tickets for May’s Duran Duran concert, but noticed that the price was slightly higher when I paid. When booking a ticket, why do I have to pay more than the actual price of the ticket? What is the extra fee for?

I’m coming to see Westlife in March. My friend will be arriving before me - can she collect my tickets?

Do you have a dress code?

I heard there is a new club coming to The O2. What is it?

Thanks a lot, Lou, Essex

Thanks, Jon, London

Dear Lou, No, only the person that purchased the tickets can collect them. You will be asked to show the purchasing credit or debit card for identification purposes. The box office should have all tickets ready for collection by 4.00pm on the day of the show, providing these tickets were purchased direct from the venue or Ticketmaster. We hope you and your friend have a great time at Westlife.

Dear Michael, Appropriate dress is required within all areas of The O2. Visitors to The O2 are not permitted to wear the following: motorcycle helmets, hoods, baseball caps, sunglasses (at night). Trainers are not permitted after 11pm, except for visitors to the cinema or The O2 arena (evidence of attendance may be required). In addition to the above, Terms of Entry events may have a specific dress code - please check the details of the event you are attending.

Dear Jon, The fees charged are to cover the administration costs incurred whilst processing the booking. All fees that are charged have to be shown separate from the face value by law. You may also purchase tickets in person at our main box office, or at The O2 bubble box office for exhibitions. Purchases made at the box office will also be subject to handling charges/booking fees.

Regards, Michael

Cheers, Sophie, Greenwich Dear Sophie, That’s right, Proud Group will reopen The O2 superclub as Proud2. Following an extensive refurbishment, the venue has been transformed into a decadent, glamorous nightspot that will run sensational weekend club nights and circusthemed productions. Proud2 is a visual spectacle, with grand-scale circus-themed productions that will include headline acts, fire breathers, trapeze artists, snake charmers, aerialists and performance art. On Saturday 5 March, Proud2 will open to the public with club night, BACCHUS. For more information see www.proud2.com We hope to see you there! The O2 Team

The Master Plan

Many artists profess that their latest record lays them bare, that never before have they been so honest with their audience. Ben Drew AKA Plan B tried that road in 2006 without success; however, over the last 18 months, telling all from a new angle has catapulted him to the top of the charts. Elizabeth Stokes takes a look at the path the multi-talented rapper-comesoul singer has taken ahead of his headline show at The O2 this month

2

A

s far as stage names go, Plan B’s is certainly apt. His 2006 debut, Who Needs Actions When You Got Words, was well received by his peers yet struggled commercially, peaking at number 30 and falling out of the top 40 altogether relatively soon after. Despite critical acclaim, his gritty, grime style beats and candid lyrics didn’t sit well with the public, who chose to fill the charts with the likes of The Stokes, Hard-Fi, Beyoncé and the Arctic Monkeys. Luckily, his three times platinum selling sophomore record, The Defamation of Strickland Banks has, without a doubt, put his career firmly back on track. It is not only an epic album, but also has created a third alter ego. He now answers to the names of Ben Drew, Plan B or Strickland Banks. In blurring the lines between fiction and reality, much of Plan B’s musical career, from lyrics to style, mimic his actual life. His persona is as derestricted and unrestrained as the genres his music falls into. Rarely wearing a smile, he comes across as a serious, closed and introverted person. However, in contrast, his interviews are frank and honest, laying bare his past, his family life and his beliefs. Starting out as a rebel rapper, there could have been an air of cliché about his story - the white hip hop star with a troubled past, who came from a broken home and still has parent issues. Yet he offers a fresh take on the modern-day, poverty-to-pop star fairytale, incorporating neatly tailored suits, articulation, brutal honesty and resolve into his rough and ready image. Just like his music style, his character appears, and indeed has acted in the past, rough, ready and void of categorisation. He appears as the image of a modern day ‘chav’, with the East London vernacular and criminal record to boot. However, in reality he is controlled and methodical in his actions. Despite giving open interviews covering a range of topics, Plan B has always been withdrawn from the celebrity circuit in a way that is increasingly rare in today’s world of glossy gossip mags and OK! wedding deals. Although we have heard his opinions on the current debate of youth crime and ‘connecting with the people’, rarely do we see him flaunting a

section head

Page Three girl at your latest hot-spot eatery. His controversial behaviour and short temper that blotted the copybook of his earlier years are now rarely seen in tabloid showbiz pages. We know about Plan B’s past, about his convictions and about his less-thanmedia perfect personalities because he chooses to speak about them. His openness and honesty on certain topics, including himself, are a far cry from the world he was brought up in. “Real men show their emotions,” he commented recently, “When I was a teenager, everything was ‘gay’. Crying was gay. Saying what you meant was gay. Actually, it’s the little boys who laugh and joke about everything, covering it up.” If the credibility of Plan B’s musical ability was ever in question, it only takes a quick glance at his discography to see just how versatile he is as an artist. It’s hard to locate where the soulful falsetto tones on The Defamation of Strickland Banks were hiding on his debut album ‘Who Needs Actions When You Got Words, especially on songs such as Missing Links, on which he unleashes accent-heavy, raw verses of out-and-out hip hop. Live performances and acoustic sessions have proven the tone of voice we hear in mastered, radio-ready versions of songs, such as Prayin’, is just as distinctive in a live environment. This year, Drew is set to execute plan C as he introduces his third album, The Ballad Of Belmarsh. Changing direction once again, the new record makes a surprise return to his hip hop roots. Defending his decision, he explained: “Why try and make another soul record when I made the best soul record I could? It was the best I could do. If it could have been any better, then I wouldn’t have let the label release it when they did.” As well as risking his new-found fan base, he allegedly also rattled his record label. They rejected his latest work, and so he is rumoured to be releasing The Ballad of Belmarsh on his own label. Speaking to BBC Newsbeat last year, he explained: “I was offended but I said, ‘Alright, cool’. This is the compromise – I take that hip-hop record, I put it out

on my own label and you own none of it, I’ll promote it off the back of my soul record.” Drew also made a bold statement about the new album’s chart prospects, saying: “I know The Ballad Of Belmarsh is not going to work commercially, I know radio ain’t going to play it but I’m still going to put it out there because I love it. It’s a piece of art. It’s probably going to sell about 100,000 copies – no more. But I’m cool with that.” Perhaps his pre-emptive acceptance of failure for his next record is the reason he has also chosen to focus on another of his passions directing films. He currently has two films in production and one in its planning stage. Due out this year, the first of his two feature films will be a visual representation of the story told over the 13 tracks of the Strickland Banks album. The second, Ill Manors, is an Eminem-style semiautobiographical tale of city living. Ill Manors has reportedly been in development for three years prior to filming; however, Drew struggled to secure finance for his film. In the latest twist to a relentlessly unpredictable career, Drew recently revealed that he is lined up to work with former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger on a track. Speaking to The Sun, he said: “I don’t know what kind of direction she is going for with her new album. But anything that I do with her would be quite edgy and not straightforward pop”. The one move we can count on from Mr Plan B/ Ben Drew/ Strickland Banks is an immense show at The O2 in March. Despite his six years as a musician, this performance marks not only his first headline slot at The O2 but also his biggest show to date. Given his unique artistic visions, we can’t wait to see how the story of Strickland Banks will played out on the world’s biggest stage. n

oing from cult obsession to arena-filling stadium stars has been a long road for the Manchester fivesome, Elbow. In the early ‘90s, at only 16 years old, frontman Guy Garvey met guitarist Mark Potter, drummer Richard Jupp, bassist Pete Turner and keyboard player Craig Potter, and formed one of the UK’s most critically acclaimed bands. Seven years after meeting and establishing their fledgling group, the now Ivor Novello award-winning hit makers found themselves signed to Island Records. After recording their debut album, the label promptly re-jigged and refreshed their roster, foolishly saying goodbye to Elbow without ever releasing the new material. Leaving the band unsigned with an entire album’s worth of tracks unable to be released, it seemed like the dream was over before it had begun. However, what appeared to be the end actually sparked the beginning. The iconic independent label Ugly Man spotted what Island had lost and promptly snapped up Garvey and co. Recording with new guidance the band released their Newborn and Any Day Now EPs, both causing a stir not only in the underground scene, but also on Radio 1. When they finally managed to release their debut album, 2001’s Asleep In The Back, on their third label, V2, Elbow saw

their first hint of commercial embrace in the form of a Mercury Award nomination. Just losing out on the ‘01 Mercury Award to PJ Harvey, it was a whole 18 years after their first gig together until the One Day Like This singers gained the recognition they unquestionably deserved in 2008, via a second nomination, which saw them claim the big prize with The Seldom Seen Kid. Finally cracking the big time, the group were launched into the ears of the public with their songs even being used for Apple’s MacBook Air adverts. Now, 21 years since their conception, Elbow’s fan base is more eclectic and fanatical than ever, and counted amongst their admirers are some of the band’s most respected peers. Elbow have received platitudes from the likes of Radiohead, Blur, R.E.M. and U2, undoubtedly making them one of the country’s most beloved bands, and now one of the most successful. It is this kind of recognition that saw their one-nightonly date at The O2 arena sell out in a matter of days. Due to phenomenal demand Elbow have now added a second night. Their hotly anticipated March date at The O2 is supporting the band’s latest album, Build A Rocket Boys!. Garvey has promised it will stay true to the original Elbow sound. We can’t wait to find out if he’s right! n

Get those jazz hands shaking - Glee is coming to light up The O2 with seven scorching shows this summer

W

hat is left to say about Glee that hasn’t already been said? It was the musical phenomenon of 2010 that not only took over television, but also invaded the charts and reinvented bands. You would’ve had to have been a long way away from civilisation to have missed the renaissance of Don’t Stop Believin’ in either its original form or smash hit cover. All thanks to one TV programme. The unprecedented success of the show can be traced back to not only its hugely talented team of writers, catchy characters and tongue-in-cheek story lines but also, in large, to its music. Taking on a format that hadn’t dared to be touched before, the cast and crew brought musicals out of the West End and into living rooms across the world. Every song that Fin, Will, Kurt, Rachel and the gang - or New Directions, as the Glee club’s band is known - touched seemed to turn to gold, silver and platinum discs, not only spawning an extensive list of new karaoke covers, but also a series of six albums. And you can’t help feeling they’re just getting started.

The popularity of the programme has stretched far and wide, with even Elton John reportedly looking to feature on an episode. He has already recorded a duet with Matthew Morrison (Glee club teacher Will Schuester) and recently revealed that it would be an “honour” to have an episode feature his hits. “I haven’t been asked to go on Glee but I love the show, it’s such a positive show and I enjoyed doing the Matthew Morrison duet very much”, he commented. This year The O2 arena welcomes the cast of Glee, who will take audiences on the journey so far and treat them to some of the show’s biggest hits. Taking to the stage in the musical with a twist and belting out the songs that have made them so popular will be: Lea Michele (Rachel), Cory Monteith (Finn), Amber Riley (Mercedes), Chris Colfer (Kurt), Kevin McHale (Artie), Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina), Mark Salling (Puck), Dianna Agron (Quinn), Naya Rivera (Santana), Heather Morris (Brittany), Harry Shum Jr. (Mike), Chord Overstreet (Sam) and Darren Criss (Blaine).

Ahead of the upcoming five day, seven show residency at The O2 this June, we take a behind-the-scenes look at a few of the songs that will feature on the London set list. Prepare for these awesome events with a quick Glee–cap of your show song knowledge! Empire State of Mind Originally by Alicia Keys and Jay-Z Taken from season two episode one (Audition), Empire State of Mind is one of the show’s biggest hits to date. The track, included on The Music: Volume 4, saw Glee’s largest first-day sales for any cover released by the programme, and continues to be a firm favourite with Gleeks around the world. The version on screen is performed with Amber Riley’s Mercedes taking on Alicia Keys’ soaring vocals, while Kevin McHale’s Artie, Cory Monteith’s Finn and Mark Salling’s Puck replace the rapper on the track. With all four of the characters due to perform at The O2, we predict the same set up, but with some extra live extravagance.

It’s My Life Originally by Bon Jovi

Don’t Stop Believin’ Originally by Journey

Toxic Originally by Britney Spears

Sung by the boys of New Directions on the show, the It’s My Life cover was combined with Usher’s Confessions Part II to create a mash-up that reached number 14 in the UK charts, and drew an audience of 1.09 million when it aired on E4. Taking the lead Usher vocals was wheelchair-bound Artie, who shocked audiences with his killer performance and showstopping vocals. Whether the London crowd at The O2 will be treated to the mash-up version is being kept a closely guarded secret, as is whether the girls will sing their retaliation, a mash-up of Beyoncé’s Halo and Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves.

This is, by far, THE iconic song of Glee. First featured in its pilot episode, the Journey epic is now synonymous with the mustwatch television show of 2010. It was the first song to be released from the original soundtrack of the series, Glee: The Music, Volume 1, marking the moment that the Glee cast not only became A-list actors, but also chart-topping pop stars. It has become an anthem across several generations, boosting Journey’s original 1981 chart position of 62 to number 6 in 2010. On top of the original being given a new lease of life, the Glee cast version just narrowly missed out on the number 1 position, peaking at number 2. With the whole cast behind the song, it was widely recognised as the highlight of the show during the American tour.

As one of the second series’ most awaited episodes, the Britney/Brittany show was a must-see for Glee enthusiasts across the globe. As the programme had already covered so many pop legends in its first series, Britney seemed like a star overlooked, having not featured earlier. However, fans needn’t have worried, as the episode delivered in style. Not only were fans of Britney and fans of Glee pleased with the outcome (all singles released from the episode charted on the Billboard Hot 100, and Toxic racked up 109,000 downloads), but Ms Spears herself tweeted about how much she loved the episode and thanked the writers for making it happen. Performed by the majority of the cast on-screen, we reckon this will be a real showstopper live.

Performances will be held at the o2 on: 25, 26, 28, 29, 30 June Tickets are available via telephone on 0844 856 0202 or visit www.theo2.co.uk

t’s not unusual for a five-piece band to return many years later as a group of four. The era of the comeback is strong, with the likes of Take That and Westlife making a return to both the charts and the touring circuit. Yet none have had the heartbreaking struggle that multi award-winning Irish heart throbs Boyzone have endured. The group’s performance at the Royal Albert Hall on 11 March 2010 was an occasion that six months previously, none of them could ever have predicted; their first after the untimely passing of their ‘brother’, Steven ‘Steo’ Gately. The 18 months prior to that landmark show had been filled with excitement and hope for the future, as they worked on their first studio album since 1999. The band had announced their plan to reform in 2008, backed by a 29-date tour around the UK and Ireland. Selling out across the board, their comeback single, Love You Anyway, as part of their Greatest Hits album, peaked at number 5, firing the boys back into the public eye with a bang. It seemed Boyzone were back and nothing could stop them. Eager to continue on their seemingly unstoppable roll, they promptly set about recording their next album. On 10 October 2009, work came to an abrupt and tragic halt, after news of the sad and sudden passing of Stephen Gately filtered through. The shocking

development left the remaining four lost and grieving, and in the midst of it all having to make some very tough decisions about the future of the band, not least whether the album they had just recorded should ever see the light of day. Luckily for us, Ronan, Mikey, Keith and Shane found strength in the face of adversity, and Brother was born. The studio experience was a hard and troubling time, but one that only served to bring the group even closer together. The band collectively decided that Brother was an album not only that Stephen would have been proud of, but which would also serve as a fitting tribute, and that releasing the album would serve as the ultimate tribute to their sadly departed bandmate. Showcasing a new sound and direction for the group, the album introduced a more mature and diverse collection of songs, which not only thrilled dedicated fans but also gathered the foursome legions of new followers. It hit the number 1 spot in England, Scotland and Ireland and finished as the 25th biggestselling album in the UK in 2010. Keen to continue honouring Gately’s memory, this March will see the four remaining ‘brothers’ play The O2 arena in a poignant yet hit-laden performance that promises to be emotional but also a celebration of their irreplaceable missing member’s time with Boyzone. n

No one does music like The O2 arena, and February’s BRIT Awards proved that in style! Elizabeth Stokes looks back at a night to remember for the UK music industry

T

here are many things we associate with Britain: cold weather, unpredictable train timetables, and a penchant for tea and scones to name but a few. However, last month at The O2, we were given not one, but a whole host of reasons to be proud of our little island. It was, of course, the landmark event that was The BRIT Awards 2011, in association with MasterCard. Taking place in the world’s most successful music venue for the first time, guests were treated to more live music than any other BRIT Awards in history, as well as being seated nearer to the action than ever before. The award itself had also received a makeover, styled by none other than Dame Vivienne Westwood. Each of the 13 winners took home the one-of-a-kind stylish new trophy, pictured right. Live performances on the night saw the best of British take to the stage, whilst at the same time giving our transatlantic neighbours a chance to strut their stuff. There were huge cheers for Arcade Fire who found time to performed in between bagging two awards, whilst Atlanta native Cee-Lo Green closed the ceremony with his number 1 single, Forget You. It was Umbrella singer Rihanna stole the show, however, sending the crowd into a frenzy by incorporating a large fire pit

centre stage during her S&M dance routine, which also saw her trademark hip thrusts and knowing smile throughout. Given her stadium-shaking applause, beaming smile and award for International Female Solo artist, it’s clear that not only can the British public not wait for her return to The O2 in October, November and December this year, but neither can she! Stunning performances from the home turf contingent came from the likes of folk quartet Mumford and Sons and Best British Group winners, Take That. Returning with Robbie Williams, the Take That boys opened the ceremony, marking the first time they’ve played at The O2 since their 8-date epic in 2007, brandishing British flags and beaming proud smiles. The chameleon of the UK music scene, Plan B, gave the audience a taste of what they can expect from his date at The O2 arena on 10 March with a theatrical rendition of the story behind his number 1 album, The Deformation of Strickland Banks. Utilising a whole troupe of dancers and a mock-up court scene he rapped, sang and danced his way through a mashup of She Said and Prayin’. The star of the night, however, had to be the local-girl-donegood who has just seen her second album, 21, go to number 1 in no less than 14 countries,

Adele. Singing a beautiful, pitch -perfect rendition of Someone Like You with only a piano for accompaniment, the 20,000capacity arena fell silent as all eyes and ears focused on The BRIT School’s most treasured Alumnus. No BRIT Awards evening would be complete without a few emotional acceptance speeches and 2011 was no different. Tinie Tempah refused to accept his Best British Single award without producer Labrinth, who was unfortunately otherwise engaged, leaving the Pass Out rapper silent on stage during the live broadcast. Take That were lost for words when they finally received the award they had waited so long to receive, Best British Group, and struggled to say anything until Mark Owen finally piped up with, “Rob, thanks for coming back, mate”, to which the audience erupted with applause. The most touching speech, however, came from the BRITs Critics Choice winner, the almighty powerful Jessie J. Looking every inch a seasoned celebrity in a tightfitting short black dress, the new star broke down as she recalled the years previous when she had sat in the stalls waiting for her chance to be where she is now. With an unusually hitchfree night and incredible atmosphere, it would be impossible to label The BRITs Trophy styled by Vivienne Westwood 2011 anything other than a total success. Roll on 2012! n

Both visually revamping the club and giving the music policy an overhaul, the Proud Group welcomes you to a unique club experience...

her visions. Despite looping from one style angle to the next before finding a middle ground and seamlessly joining them in central areas, she always appears to have a master plan. Entering the club via room two, it’s evident the grey steel structure that once ruled the majority of the area never stood a chance against Danielle’s wild visions of curved walls emblazoned in red and white polka dot. She describes the new look space as an “experiencial” night club, focusing not only on the music and visuals, but also the environment that they are housed in. “In the main room we’re going to have circus acts,” she explains, “trapeze artists are going to do triple somersaults from the ceiling, coming down to select flamboyantly dressed people to enter exclusive rooms.” What is currently being affectionately labelled as the Gentleman’s Club, is one of those rooms. Displaying a retro-feel orange tortoiseshell back wall with huge orange curtains hanging from the ceiling, it’s already certainly like no other space on the London club circuit. Pillars around the club draw inspiration from the British designer David Hicks, incorporating bold, shockingly vibrant colours, whilst mixing antique and modern furnishings. Depending on what area you’re in, the walls not only display extravagant artwork, but also impressive lighting systems from Sputnik design lights, gold Cartel-style pipe lights and imposing LCD screens. The VIP Leopard Lounge features metallic grey seats next to life-sized leopards, and has a side room designed to emulate an ideal cosy living room. The main arena has had its stage expanded by around 10ft on each side, allowing for more live acts and larger bands – a feature that is planned to be regularly utilised. “Aside from the weekend club nights, the other main aspect to the venue will be big midweek band nights. It’ll be like a mini version of The O2 arena,”

Alex explained. As well as a full visual overhaul, the team behind Proud2 have worked tireless to address other grievances clubbers previously had with the venue. The club struggled with transport links; an inconsistent Jubilee line service, a long walk to the entrance of the club and back to the taxi rank in the evening. It was a well-known problem, one that Alex has taken seriously, and presented an innovative solution to. “We’ve created our own bus service,” he explained. Although health and safety issues scuppered the original plans for Routemasters, the plan has soldiered on with standard issue buses. The service is planned to run every 20 to 30 minutes from midnight to 6am and will stop at Waterloo, Kings Cross and Victoria. At only £2 for a one-way ticket, it not only offers convenience, but also value for money. Equally, there will be a shuttle service to take you on the long walk from the North Greenwich tube stop to the club itself, as well as a whole rank of taxis. The old venue’s ‘dance music only’ policy has also been reshaped, with a line-up as eclectic as the interior decor they will be performing in. The list of names lined up to perform include Little Boots, Chipmunk, Jazzy Jeff, Chicane, Howard Marks and Infected Mushroom. “I take inspiration from my team. We have no direct music policy, but if my team are enthused about an act, and they can sell it to me, we will try and book them. My team’s job is to get me excited about the act.” With the varying music genres, out-there design styles and ambitious visual display plans, the ethos of the club seems to be entirely focused on the creating a never before seen experience for the clubber. “The thing is, I like my customers, I want them to have fun, that’s what I aim for with all my clubs,” Alex told us. “I don’t want a vastly exclusive venue that only welcomes the élite, that’s fine for a while then it’ll be out of fashion. Proud2 is for everyone. We want there to always be a reason to come and never a reason not to.” n

he disused shell that once inhabited the far back annex of The O2 site is no more. No longer does the super club of Greenwich represent the bygone era of abandoned warehouse raves. In fact, the new and improved experience could not be further from how we remember what was once the dance venue mecca of South East London. Proud2 have transformed this unique space, simultaneously modernizing it and recapturing the lavish decadence of a bygone age. The club now represents opulence entangled in the oxymoron of futuristic 1920s’ glamour. From metallic paints to optical art by top graffiti artists, Proud2 personifies circus luxury with a generous helping of Vegas glam, Hollywood regency and living room chic. It’s a place where trendy vintage décor has come head to head with neon paint and then gilded for added beauty. It’s a place where you feel relaxed and spoilt, even when you’re waiting in the queue at the bar. Given the vision needed to create such a stark difference in appearance, it’s no surprise that owner Alex Proud didn’t initially want to take on the venture. “I didn’t like the design of the club, I thought it was a real disaster. Even when I came to see to it I hated it,” Alex explained to us. “I woke up in the middle of the night one evening and just suddenly realised that it is Vegas. At that moment I knew it was perfect, and since then I haven’t changed my mind.” Realising he had the ultimate blank canvas ready for him, Alex accepted his challenge with relish. “I knew I had to totally revamp the whole concept of what the club was going to be, I had to take it away from being a hardcore dance-only club and transform it into a glamorous, beautiful, feminine, colourful pleasure palace.” Taking a walk around with chief designer Danielle Proud, ahead of the club’s grand unveiling on 5 March, it’s clear where Alex’s ideas have been implemented, but also where Danielle has focused

f laughter really is the best medicine then The O2 has raided the pharmacy this year. Bringing you the funniest stars of the screen and stage, no stone has been left unturned in the hunt for sidesplitting entertainment. From the chatty chat show host who asks the questions that no other will dare, to the man who divided America with his cult television show, there is something for everyone across all of The O2 venues. Each with a first-class routine, 2011’s comic collection represents a vertiable who’s who of jokers from around the world. Both Peter Kay and Jerry Seinfeld make welcome

returns to the circuit following extended time off, whereas relative newcomer Jason Manford continues his fantastically successful 2010 ‘Off On Tour We Go’ tour. Originally one of the main writers on Spitting Image in the late ‘80s, Andy Parsons is now better known for being a permanent fixture on BBC2’s ever popular Mock The Week, but will be making time for an audience at The O2 this April. Taking a closer look at what’s in store for comedy customers this year, we delve into the laughter files to examine where our comedians started, where they have been and what they’ll be doing to keep us laughing throughout 2011.

Peter Kay As the best thing to come out of Bolton since sliced bread (Warburton’s in this case), Peter Kay has become one of the UK’s most celebrated stand-up comedians. Phenomenal ticket demand for the ‘Tour That Doesn’t Tour’ tour, his first in seven years, saw in excess of 400,000 tickets snapped up in just three hours, breaking the box office record previously set by Take That. This year sees Kay take on ten sell-out dates over four months at The O2 arena, proving without a doubt that the 37-year-old comedian is yet to lose his funny bone. Far from being just a stand-up, Kay’s legacy also stretches across television and music, too. First hitting our screens with That Peter Kay Thing over a decade ago, he is one of few modern comedians with the ability to write and perform with consistent success. Already having Phoenix Nights and Max & Paddy’s Road to Nowhere under his belt, as well as number one hits with Is This the Way to Amarillo and I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles), the northern joker has become unstoppable. Not only has he conquered almost all media outlets but the oneman joke shop has also changed the way the public speak. Garlic bread anyone? When: 31 March to 4 April, 6 – 10 June Where: The O2 arena

Lee Evans

The bendiest man in com edy will bring his infect ious, manic energy and uncanny observat ions to The O2 this yea r as he bounds in with his Roadrunner tour. Always sporting his fra ntic ‘rabbit in headlights ’ look, Evans’ madcap live performance s have become the stu ff of legend. His DVD releases and tour tickets continue to sm ash sales and box office records year after year, giving even the mig hty Peter Kay a run for his money. Eva ns’ 2011 show follows on from his ‘08 effort which sold out in just 60 minutes, makin g it the UK’s biggest solo live comedy gig eve r at the time, breaking his own previous record from 2005. If fan s were in any doubt abo ut quite what a performance the Bristo l-born entertainer puts on, his subsequent Big – Live At The O DV D broke all previous sta 2 nd-up DVD sales records when it shifted a staggering 259,399 units during its first week alone, and becam e the biggest week on e release for a nonfilm DVD of all time – a record it still holds tod ay. With many accolades to his name, Lee Evans has also proved himself as an actor, sta rring in the likes of The re’s Something About Mary, The Fifth Element and Mouse Hunt, as we ll as incorporating his musical talents in his stand-up. He has been known to play the mandolin, ukulele, guitar , bass, electronic keybo ard, piano and drums during his shows . Jason Manford Manchester born and bred Jason Manford lands in The O2 with his Off On Tour We Go tour, his first arena excursion ever. Like all of The O2’s acts, Mr Manford’s mantlepiece is certainly not gathering dust, with a whopping eight titles to his name already. However, his breakthrough year only came fairly recently, according to his 2006 Chortle Award for Best Breakthrough Act. Since then, he has not only cemented himself as one of the nation’s favourite funny men, but has also succeeded in putting his name to various other small screen hits. Fans have seen him acting in shows such as Shameless and Walk on the Wild Side before he landed the coveted position as co-host of BBC One’s flagship prime time programme, The One Show. Leaving The One Show last year, Manford embarked on tour to sell-out crowds and across-the-board praise. The continuation of the tour in 2011 is guaranteed to keep audiences rolling in the aisles with hilarious tales of shower mishaps, visiting “dangerous” animals and nappies. Jason commented, “If someone had told me ten years ago when I was telling jokes down at my local that I’d be doing arenas by the time I was 30, I’d have said they should give comedy a go! It’s a really exciting opportunity and I am going to give it my best shot.” Renowned for his hilarious observations and loveable, friendly delivery, Jason has been a firm favourite with comedy fans of all ages since his first solo stand-up in 2005, and this year looks set to only expand his ever-growing fan base.

Jerry Seinfeld Comedians don’t get much bigger than global phenomenon Jerry Seinfeld, so it’s no surprise that when he announced that he would be exclusively at The O2 arena for one night only in 2011, the UK went comedy crazy. As one of the biggest grossing comics in the world, this will be the first time that Seinfeld has performed stand-up live in the UK since 1998. His is a name synonymous with outstanding comedy: Seinfeld is best known for playing a largerthan-life version of himself in the eponymously titled sitcom, which has seen ten years’ worth of series. After the finale of Seinfeld, the New York comic and actor took a long break from the spotlight, only ever showing up as himself, or at least a version of himself, in select American shows. However, like all of our comedians at The O2 this year, Seinfeld couldn’t stay away and has started turning his hand to various projects in recent years. In 2007, he co-wrote and co-produced the animated film Bee Movie, in which he gave his voice to the lead role of Barry B. Benson. February 2010 saw his return to the small screen as executive producer of NBC’s reality TV series, The Marriage Ref. In his latest venture he’s now turned his hand to theatre, directing his friend Colin Quinn in Long Story Short on Broadway. Last time Seinfeld played in the UK, 12 years ago, it was to sell-out crowds, despite a date clash with the World Cup final. The American comedy star has long credited the London stand-up scene as inspirational, and has announced how much he is looking forward to performing in front of a UK crowd again. Probably not as much as the UK crowd will be looking forward to his performance, though!

Alan Carr Stand-up comedian, best-selling author and chat show supremo, the lovable Chatty Man and Tooth Fairy himself, Alan Carr is back on stage this November with a brand new live stand-up show, Spexy Beast. The flamboyant Mr Carr was first thrust into the public eye in 2005, when he was joined by his partner in crime, Justin Lee Collins, on The Friday Night Project. The show was such a massive triumph that it lasted for three years in its original format before becoming The Sunday Night Project in 2008, effectively sending the loveable duos’ careers supersonic. After a few years rubbing shoulders with A-list celebrities on his very own chat show, multi award-winning Alan Carr is now returning to his stand-up roots in his first major live comedy tour in four years. Weymouth’s most famous specs wearer has made a career out of his camp observations and more risqué way of thinking, earning him a multitude of awards and an army of fans. His unique and direct approach to guests on his TV show has also earned him a huge following that we have no doubt will follow him to his shows at The O2.

Jamiroquai recently made their longawaited return with a new album, label and, of course, a one-night-only show at The O2 this April

A

s someone famed for their flamboyant hats, funky grooves and catchy riffs, Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay’s love of simplicity may come as a shock to his vast number of fans. According to the man himself, the foundations of his musical ethos are: “If it doesn’t sound good with just a keyboard and a voice, or a guitar and a voice, drop it.” He continues: “Some of the best songs in history are simple. Listen to some more Stevie Wonder – ‘all in love is fair, two people play the game’. It’s not brain-wrenching stuff, but it is heartwrenching stuff! Sometimes it doesn’t matter if you’re singing, ‘the cow sat on the top of the hill’. If you deliver it right, it works. Golden rule!” Despite his matter-of-fact manner and straightforward approach to music, there’s more than meets the eye to the Deeper Underground singer. The showman is also a deep thinker, taking an interest in ecology, religion, space and futurology. This year, Jay Kay and his band of loyal musicians have taken their clear-cut attitude and deeper line of thought back to the studio, in order to deliver not only their first studio album in five years, Rock Dust Light Star, but also a huge one-off show at The O2 arena. “The title is effectively about what we’re made of,” Kay explains in his direct yet offbeat and thought provoking manner. “We are all made up of this funny stuff called stardust. I just thought to myself, it’d be nice

if we could also look outwards a little bit more, instead of inwards, which is praying.” After such a long recording hiatus, slipping back into the format of work could be difficult for some. Not so in this case. “I do feel rejuvenated, music-wise and business-wise,” he says, explaining that he was “physically knackered” after his seven albums for Sony, the label he signed to when he was 22. Kay has commented that he felt that the relationship was exhausted in every sense, and that he was keen to “draw a line in the sand” but now he’s back in the studio he and the band feel that “everything has clicked.” Now working with a new team at Mercury, a reinvigorated creative partnership with his musicians and producers; far from feeling that age is catching up with him, Jay Kay is now buzzing with ideas, eager to get out on tour and unleash his new songs to the world. Rock Dust Light Star was released late last year to rapturous reviews and a top 10 chart position. This latest release has further added to the band’s 25 million plus albums sold to date. Combined with their shelf full of awards (five MTV gongs, an Ivor Novello and a Grammy), it is plain to see that Jamiroquai are a band on fire. With their arena date at The O2 this April, Kay hinted that the band are “looking forward to playing stuff from the new album,” as well as delivering new twists on plenty of the old hits. n

ithout doubt, The Beatles created something that no other band has ever matched. The hysteria that surrounded the Fab Four followed them from country to country, and their legacy is still very prominent in music nowadays, well over half a century since they made their debut. With few bands able to rival what the Yellow Submarine singers did, it’s no wonder that their forefront tribute act, The Magic of The Beatles, has also been a raging success worldwide. They have toured Europe, as well as touring in Russia, the USA, the Caribbean islands, China and the Middle East. Along the way they have performed for celebrity royalty including: David and Victoria Beckham, Sir Richard Branson, Madonna, Tiger Woods, Wayne Rooney and Gordon Ramsay. Billed as the authoritative Beatles live concert, the production was a runaway success when they hit the indigO2 last year. The two-hour spectacular features authentic costumes as well as a cast of gifted

musicians and singers. It accurately recreates the live concert shows of John, Paul, George and Ringo that generated fan frenzy, the likes of which had never been seen before, or since. “Hit stage show The Magic of the Beatles achieves something that the original Beatles failed to all those years ago,” says the production’s producer Michael Taylor, “Audiences can actually hear what is being played!”. The band clearly place huge emphasis on attention to detail, something evident throughout as the production takes music fans from the Beatles’ mop-top roots to the psychedelia of Sgt Pepper and beyond. Knowing exactly what it was that caused ‘Beatlemania’, the original guitars and amps are used to authentically recreate the unique sound that created such an unbelievable stir. The Magic of the Beatles launches its 2011 tour at the indigO2 on 7 April. “It covers their entire career, from Love Me Do to Let it Be,” says Taylor. “And with 50 songs that sold millions of copies to choose from, we can guarantee a completely new production this year.” n

Art for Music’s Sake No instruments necessary for this continuing foray into the British Music Experience’s Visual Identity Series, bringing you face-to-face with art legends of the British music scene, past and present Gered Mankowitz Thursday 10 march By the age of 19, Gered Mankowitz was already achieving the things that every young teenager at the foot of a rock concert stage is dreaming of; touring the world with its biggest rock stars. London-born in 1946, his formative years were spent floating from school to school looking for a vocation the suited him. Then, at 15, he landed an apprenticeship with the legendary photographer, Tom Blau at Camera Press Ltd. Finally finding a job that made sense to him, Mankowitz began his career in earnest, and from humble beginnings established himself as one of the finest photographers in the industry. Many years later and his CV now reads like a bible of the rock music Gods, peppered with countless prestigious exhibitions. Mankowitz’s early career progressed well, but it was only in 1965, when he started working with none other than the Rolling Stones, that he cemented himself as one of the industry’s leading lights. Not only did he shoot many of the images for the Stones’ albums (including Between the Buttons, Got Live If You Want It! and Big Hits), but he also found himself on the road with the greatest rock band in the world at the peak of their original success. Forming bonds with musicians and cruising the US on a nine-week, 48-city tour, Mankowitz’s status as THE rock photographer was set. He went on to picture the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Soft Machine, Slade, Suzi Quatro, Elton John, Kate Bush, Eurythmics, Duran Duran and many more during his illustrious career. On 10 March, the British Music Experience is proud to welcome Gered Mankowitz to discuss his unique oneon-one time with so many of history’s musical stalwarts and to answer your questions.

Roger Dean and Storm Thorgerson thursday 7 april You may be told never to judge a book by its cover but when it comes to music, album art is everything. The heyday of vinyl saw album covers proudly carried and displayed under customers’ arms as they left HMV; brandishing the artwork became a trophy of their musical style. The works of art that adorn seminal albums have, in fact, become seminal themselves, as galleries around the world illustrate the evolution of design via vast collections of iconic covers. Amongst these exhibitions are the likes of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here, and Yes’s Fragile album covers, all designed by two men: Roger Dean and Storm Thorgerson. Trendsetters from the beginning, Thorgerson and partner Aubrey Powell’s surreal, elaborately manipulated photos (utilising darkroom tricks, multiple exposures, airbrush retouching, and mechanical cut-and-paste techniques) have been credited as film-based forerunners of what is now termed ‘photoshopping’. Equally, Dean designed the now-classic Yes bubble logo, and has continued to create covers for bands until as recently as 1999. On 7 April, for one night only at the British Music Experience, these two giants of album cover art are coming together to talk about their work, their experiences with rock’s aristocracy, and the stories behind the iconic sleeves that broke the mould and revolutionised the model for future music-based works of art.

Usher

Opening with the electrifying Raymond Vs Raymond album track Monstar, Usher brought his four-night sell-out show to The O2 last month. The international superstar ensured the show catered for fans old and new as he rolled out hit after hit from every chapter of his career, incorporating Michael Jackson-style moves with the trademark Usher flare. Highlights came from classics such as U Remind Me, Yeah and, for one lucky fan who shared a one-on-one moment with the man himself on stage, U Make Me Wanna. A true showman and a series of amazing nights.

Premier League Darts More than10,000 spectators gathered to watch the likes of Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor and James Wade battle it out at the Premier League Darts Championship last month. With ‘The Power’ laid out with flu the week before the big match, the atmosphere was fiercely tense, and Taylor suffered his heaviest defeat yet when World Champion Adrian Lewis stormed to an 8-2 victory. Proving what an incredible venue for sporting events The O2 arena is, the format was praised by spectators for allowing a much larger crowd than the sport had ever seen before.

Restaurant of the month: Thai Silk Located towards the entrance of Entertainment Avenue, The O2’s buzzing restaurant-come-club Thai Silk provides the perfect starting point for your night with a great location and atmosphere. Tucking into one of their signature cocktails, a Mekhong Passion, the taste of Thailand is instantly recognisable. Their set menus not only represent excellent value, at around £20 per head for a five-course meal, but also authenticity and attentive service. With a vast menu, created to satisfy those who can handle the spicy flavours of southern Asia as well as a range of milder, spiced infused dishes, each maintains a high standard in taste and presentation. As well as an extensive cocktail list and tasty food menu, the team behind Thai Silk also transform the downstairs eating area into an RnB and funky house haven after hours. Friday’s Candy sees a relaxed crowd whereas Dressy Saturdays cater for the more glamorous clubbers. With entry fees starting from £5 the place is always packed to rafters with eager partygoers. On top of the excellent service, huge menu and superb cocktail options, the light nature of the food on offer at Thai Silk makes it the perfect pre-event eatery at The O2.

Roxy Music Gathering fans from around the world, Roxy Music’s show at The O2 not only marked their last 2011 tour date in the UK, but also a return to the ‘70s for the arena. If there’s one thing Bryan Ferry, Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay and Paul Thompson know, it’s how to keep their ‘old guard’ fans happy. With haunting guitars and atmospheric piano solos, the band dusted off album tracks from their vinyl era, embracing their most loyal of fans to a raptuous response. Finishing the performance with the likes of Same Old Scene, no fans, old or new, were left disappointed.

This month we are listening to... Jessie J Who You Are Label: Island RECORDS Release Date: 28 Feb

Already the winner of both The BRITs Critics’ Choice award and the BBC Sound Of 2011 poll, Jessie J’s debut was bound to cause a stir. The 13-track masterpiece slips nicely somewhere in between Lady Gaga and Pink, with a healthy mix of out-and-out pop tunes and less commercially-focused songs. Opening with her latest single, Price Tag featuring B.o.B, Jessie glides effortlessly from smash Do It Like a Dude to the almighty powerful Mamma Knows Best, before moving through a multitude of future number ones and closing with the motivational ballad and album title, Who You Are. Although her musical style jumps from genre to genre, there is one consistent throughout and that’s her incredible voice, which never fails to impress.

I Done A Album

Following the success of the double platinum selling The Seldom Seen Kid, Elbow make their long-awaited return this month with the release of their fifth studio album, Build a Rocket Boys! as well as their dates at The O2. Featuring the likes of the Halle Youth Choir, the band have retained strong links with both their original sound and home town. This was something frontman Guy Garvey had promised, and delivers emphatically with nostalgic lyrics and atmospheric sounds. Existing fans and first time listeners alike won’t be disappointed.

Dubstep’s favourite vocalist turned pop star Katy B celebrates her “embarrassingly personal” eponymous debut release this month. Following three huge hits in Katy on a Mission, Lights On and Perfect Stranger, Ms. B offers up a further nine tracks that give a 360 º snap shot of her life so far. As well as its lyrical melting pot, covering everything from growing and relationships to hedonism in London nightlife, the album also offers Katy’s trademark underground beats, dirty bass lines and pop-friendly hooks.

As one of the world’s most respected beatboxers, Beardyman is bringing one of hip hop’s dark arts into the mainstream with his debut offering, ‘I Done A Album’. Entering new territories, thanks to his use of sampling, sequencing and looping, this album hits all the right notes. Although perhaps making it harder to appreciate the skills involved, the transition from live performance to recorded track is seamless. Especially listen out for the current Venue office favourite, ‘Oh!’ featuring Foreign Beggars!

S E M A G zone Games expert Ryan Cope dives headfirst into an alternate world this month as he tests the latest interactive gaming experiences on the Xbox Kinect and gets to grips with Red Dead Redemption’s newest incarnation

XBOX Kinect Whether the Xbox Kinect is a technological behemoth or a kids’ party accessory depends largely on who you ask. It is certainly an impressive piece of hardware that will have your mouth gaping at its Minority Report style controls, voice commands and facial recognition. At the moment, however, only families and party groups will really make the most of it; ‘hardcore gamers’ will have to wait a while before anything really gripping is released, although the potential is most definitely there. To call it intelligent might be going a bit too far, but at times the Kinect comes across as a living being with its surprising reactivity to your actions. There are times where it will have trouble seeing you or identifying your hand from your elbow, or it decides to adjust itself to see your head better, but at the cost of cutting out your legs entirely; a huge frustration when playing a game which requires them! Space is one thing that owners will need a lot of, especially if you want to play it to its full potential. Kinect’s voice command is also impressive, if not yet 100% accurate, as “play disc” can sometimes be interpreted as “signing in”. Speaking clearly with minimal background noise is a must. However, issues like this aside, the Kinect allows players freedom to use their body in any way to play. Becoming a controller allows them to engage you with the game and is a great benefit, not to mention the exercise that comes with it. The Kinect certainly gets the blood flowing and releases those feel-good emotions you get when you know you’ve worked hard. Overall, the Kinect has shown that it can achieve some pretty amazing feats; however, this is just the beginning and it will be interesting to see how the console will further evolve. 9/10

Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare The Wild West, cowboys and zombies: what more could you ask for? A B-movie style story filled to the brim with quirky characters, beautiful scenery and adrenaline-fuelled missions Undead Nightmare is gaming at its best – exciting, hilarious and downright fun, a benchmark for what all downloadable content should strive to achieve. 10/10 Available on PS3 and Xbox 360

KINECT GAMES OVERVIEW Kinect Adventures 5/10 Displays the Kinect’s gaming capability well, but has limited modes. Dance Central 10/10 Upbeat, entertaining and gets your heart pumping. Best Kinect game! Kinectamals Cute, lovable and attention grabbing, the kids will love it.

8/10

Kinect Sports 8/10 Wide variety of engaging and competitive modes, but slightly flawed. Kinect Joyride Whacky, stylish and colourful, but hard to control at times.

The Adjustment Bureau

The Lincoln Lawyer

After being given a glimpse into his future, David Norris (Matt Damon) realises he wants more than what fate has to offer him. In order to change the course of his life, Norris knows he must pursue the only girl he has ever truly loved, Elise Sellas (Emily Blunt). However, he soon finds himself up in a deadly battle with the agents of fate themselves - the men of The Adjustment Bureau. From first-time director George Nolfi, and the novelist behind Blade Runner and Minority Report, this really is a love story with a difference.

Mickey Haller (Matthew McConaughey) is a young criminal defense attorney who uses his car as an office. Following years spent defending common criminals, he lands the case of a lifetime, defending Beverly Hills playboy Louis Rolet (Ryan Phillippe), who is accused of assaulting a young girl. The seemingly straightforward case steadily develops into a deadly game of survival for Haller when he starts to suspect that Rolet is hiding things from him. Based on the bestseller by Michael Connelly, this is an edge-ofyour-seat investigative thriller with a stellar cast.

Rango

Chalet Girl

Industrial Light & Magic, the company that provided the special effects for the Star Wars movies, have pulled out all the stops to create this hilarious 3D chameleon film. Self-appointed hero Rango (Johnny Depp) finds himself in new surroundings after winding up in an Old West town called Dirt. Patrolling the streets like a sheriff, Rango quickly learns that the ‘good guy’ is not welcome in a town like Dirt, and he begins to question everything about himself. Fans of Depp’s previous films, such as the Pirates trilogy, are guaranteed not be left disappointed.

Snowbound comedy Chalet Girl follows former champion skateboarder Kim Matthews (Felicity Jones) as she tries to recapture her dream of sporting glory. After falling into a deadend job, opportunity comes knocking in the form of a catering job in the one of the most exclusive Alps chalets. Forced to face some of her biggest fears, she discovers snowboarding, and the chance to win some much-needed prize money at the big end-ofseason competition.

World Invasion: Battle LA

Fair Game

This sc-fi action epic follows a platoon of Marines as Earth comes under a deadly alien attack. People everywhere watch the world’s greatest cities fall, before Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It’s up to a marine staff sergeant, Michael Nantz (Aaron Eckhart), and his new platoon, including technical sergeant Elena Santos (Michelle Rodriguez), to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they’ve ever encountered before. Can they find an effective defence before L.A. succumbs, just as all the other cities have?

This taut political drama is based on the real-life experiences of covert CIA operative Valerie Plame (Naomi Watts), whose status was revealed by a White House leak. When Plame’s husband, US diplomat Joseph Wilson (Sean Penn), discloses some top secret government documents in the New York Times, retribution is swift and Plame suddenly finds her identity revealed to the world. Under the watchful eye of Bourne Identity director Doug Liman, Fair Game gives a glimpse into the real lives and practices behind the people who run the world’s government.

Submarine

The Resident

An unconventional comedy about Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts), a 15-year-old boy with only two relatively simple, yet all-consuming objectives: to seduce his girlfriend, Jordana (Yasmin Paige), and to prevent his mother (Sally Hawkins) from leaving his depressed father. He’s almost there with the girlfriend, but keeping his mum in check is going to require a greater degree of cunning. A though provoking and engaging directorial debut from The IT Crowd’s Richard Ayoade.

Juliet (Hilary Swank) cannot believe her luck when she stumbles across an all-too-perfect loft apartment in Brooklyn. However, she soon begins to suspect that something strange is afoot. It’s not just that her new landlord Max (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is overly attentive, or the way her elderly neighbour August (Christopher Lee) alerts her to her isolation. It’s also because she is unable to shake the nagging suspicion she’s being watched in her own home.
