The heart-throb is hitting the big stage this time around Due to phenomenal public demand, Peter Andre has announced he will play 11 dates around the UK in December, playing The O2 arena on 13 December. Peter has already sold out 38 dates on his Revelations UK tour, which also mark his first live dates in six years – and he will visit The O2 to play its small live music venue, indigO2 on 6 March. The new arena dates later in the year allow those not fortunate enough to have secured a ticket for the spring tour, to see Peter performing in arenas. The 2010 tour will see Peter performing tracks from his new album live with his band. It will include top five single Behind Closed Doors and previous classic hits, including Mysterious Girl. Following the success of his album Revelation last year, he has released Unconditional Love Songs – a collection of Peter’s favourite love songs from previous albums, as well as five covers of classic love songs in Peter’s own style. Tickets for Peter’s show at The O2 are priced from £26.50–£100 (subject to booking fee) and are available from www.theo2.co.uk or by calling 0844 856 0202.
s through luka s wooller’s eye The British Music Experience hosted an exclusive Songwriting Masterclass and Workshop with double Ivor Novello Award-winner Chris Difford. A unique, collaborative event for aspiring songwriters as well as fans Chris, hosted a Songwriting Workshop and provided a Q&A session discussing his songwriting technique, his 30-year musical journey writing top 20 hits, and performing new material with some of his most-loved songs. Lukas Wooller of Maximo Park gives us exclusively his view. “This was a very enjoyable and interesting class. Chris talked about his musical childhood and early songwriting experiences in Squeeze. He explained how he would write lyrics, which Glen Tilbrook would then set. I was intrigued to learn that Chris has always
found himself writing lyrics that suggest song structures to his co-writers, so much so that his lyrics are barely ever re-arranged. Chris also explained how he gets inspiration for his words, regularly working with people in music therapy classes. Among the four songs he performed with his guitar, his rendition of Take Me, I’m Yours was really great, as was a newer song Battersea Boys – his voice sounded fantastic.”

I LOOK TO YOU
Claire Saunders takes a look
at the iconic career of global superstar Whitney Houston, in anticipation of her forthcoming tour
W
ith one of the most powerful and beautiful voices in the history of popular music, Whitney Houston has been a global icon for over a quarter of a century. Ever since she recorded her history-making debut album in 1985, Whitney Houston has become a superstar, a legend, an idol – and one of the most recognisable faces in the world.
2
section head
One of the bestselling female artists of all time, she has sold over 140 million albums worldwide (190 million records total) and is the most awarded female artist in history, with a whopping 411 awards to her name. She became the first artist ever to have seven consecutive number 1 singles, and her 1993 Dolly Parton cover, I Will Always Love You,for the film The Bodyguard, became nothing less than the biggest hit single in rock history. It’s fairly plain to see that this lady certainly doesn’t do things by halves... With the kind of fame that means we can refer to her simply as ‘Whitney’ (keeping company with other iconic voices such as Madonna and Mariah), she boasts the kind of voice that is able to contend with huge contemporary ballads, energetic dance-pop, and urban contemporary soul with equal skill. An unusual capability, the result is an ‘ever-reigning’ Queen of Pop with across-the-board appeal that was matched by few artists of the 80s, 90s or 00s. In fact, her influence is so powerful that she is continually held up as the pitch perfect example, even during her ten-year break from the industry. Looking back 25 years, Whitney was the ‘perfect American sweetheart’ (even appearing as the face of Diet Pepsi); a young girl discovered while singing in a gospel choir. She quickly rose to fame with pop ballad Didn’t We Almost Have It All? before Greatest Love of All, One Moment in Time, Saving All My Love for You and Where Do Broken Hearts Go? were all released in the following three-year period. But it was release of epic dance-floor hits such as So Emotional and I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me) that really illustrated Whitney’s diverse vocal capabilities.
You have to know when to slow that train down and kind of just sit back and relax for a minute Whitney soon branched out again, this time taking on perhaps her most famous film role in The Bodyguard (1992), and with it came the recordbreaking single I Will Always Love You (which spent 14 weeks at Number 1). Later, she appeared in the female ensemble drama Waiting to Exhale and the first single from the soundtrack Exhale (Shoop Shoop) topped the charts, while the album sold over seven million copies. Whitney has also paid tribute to her gospel roots during her career, and her soundtrack to the 1996 film The Preacher’s Wife (played by Whitney) included appearances by her gospelsinging mother Cissy Houston, Shirley Caesar, and the Georgia Mass Choir. In 1998 Whitney released a new album, My Love Is Your Love, having worked with names such as Babyface, David Foster, Missy Elliot, Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill and Q-Tip and she continued to perform until 2000. Since then, Whitney has taken time out from the intensity of the music industry to rest and spend time with her family. However, despite her absence from the pop genre in the last nine or ten years, the reputation and legend of Whitney’s incredible voice means she still holds high

status. After all, how many X Factor or American Idol auditionees claim to want be as successful as Whitney – and how many performances does Simon lament, as they sound nothing like the iconic Whitney? In late 2009, Whitney was ready to storm back into the industry. “I just took a break, which sometimes you have to”, said Whitney. “You have to know when to slow that train down and kind of just sit back and relax for a minute.” Her comeback boasted a Number 1 album in America and she appeared in a memorable episode of the X Factor in the UK, to an audience of millions. Obviously back on top form and mentored by Clive Davis (Record Producer who has steered Whitney’s career for more than 25 years), her new album, I Look to You, is packed full of upbeat, radiofriendly tunes penned by proven hit makers such as R. Kelly, Alicia Keys, Akon and Johnta Austin. Of course, following the success of any major pop album should be an even more successful tour. And for Whitney fans here in the UK, 2010 is the year that the superstar will finally return to perform a series of live dates. Hot on the heels of her critically acclaimed, internationally chart-topping album I Look To You, Whitney Houston announced that the UK leg of her European tour will finish at The O2 on Sunday 25 April. This will be Whitney’s first major tour in more than 11 years and, as a result, the concerts will be the must-see shows of the new decade, as Houston returns to the stage to perform classic hits alongside her latest songs. “This is my first full tour since the My Love Is Your Love tour and I am so excited to be performing for my fans around the world after all this time”, says Whitney. “I am putting together a great show and cannot wait to perform the songs from my new album I Look To You, along with some of your favourites.”n

DMB
DMB: A MODERN LEGEND James Conlon takes a look
at the eclectic history of the Dave Matthews Band in the run up to their live performance at The O2
W
hen Dave Matthews, a South African bartender, asked two Virginian musicians to help him record a demo for a few songs he had written, expectations were hardly skyhigh. The trio of Matthews, Carter Beauford and LeRoi Moore headed into the practice room and began working on the project. Little did they know that the group they had created would span two decades, eight studio albums and more tour dates than any other artist performing today. They have moved from playing in tiny venues in their hometown of Charlottesville to sold-out arenas all over the globe. In 2010 the band, which has grown to a five-piece, have become a musical legacy. They have sold over 20 million records to date and are inciting fans all over the world to dance and celebrate their unique blend of acoustic folk-based rock. Each member is a highly recognised musician in their own field, bringing the worlds of Jazz, Hip hop, Blues, Folk and Rock together to form the eclectic and original sound which the band are so well known for. The band wowed millions of people when they performed last month at the coveted Grammy awards. Their exceptional rendition of You & Me (featuring a choir and string section) proved once again that they are by no means left on the wayside by modern artists. DMB have gone from strength to strength with each album that they have made, and are showing now (in their 20th year as a collective) that they are one of the most impressive and influential acts in existence. The band was also nominated for two awards themselves, receiving acclaim from critics and musicians alike. Tragically, the band suffered the loss of saxophonist and founding member LeRoi Moore in late 2008. The news devastated the band members and fans the world over, who reacted immediately to show their love and support for a man who had contributed so much to the success and influence of the group. While this may have shaken and separated most acts of this calibre, the loss has only brought the group closer together as a unit. Anyone who has seen Dave Matthews Band live will know that they are not just any other act: there is a shared love, history and bond that unites them, both as a group and in the music they create.
2
Dave Matthews Band has toured more than any other artist over the last decade, entertaining legions of fans over the planet with their unique brand of Folk-Rock. However, say the letters ‘DMB’ to the average man on the street and in all likelihood you’ll be treated to a blank stare. The truth of the matter is that Dave Matthews Band is one of music’s best-kept secrets. They have had numerous platinum-selling records and they are one of the biggest selling acts of the last ten years, but have still somehow managed to stay ‘under the radar’ of public consciousness. They have a cult status, having gained millions of fans who love them purely for the music they make and not the celebrity status that comes with it. The Dave Matthews Band is celebrating the release of their eighth studio album, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, which debuted at number one in the American album charts. They will grace The O2 on 6 March as part of their infamous annual European tour – one of the must-see events of 2010.n

westlife
B
More than ten years on and Westlife are still topping charts and breaking hearts. Hayley Thorpe takes a look at the phenomenon that is Westlife
oy bands as a general rule have a shelf life of around five years, but Westlife have defied the rule, with a career spanning over a decade. Their list of achievements makes many an artist envious, including 14 number one singles, ten chart-topping albums and 40 million sales, to name just a few. Their dream started many years ago when they were still at school, dreaming of being massive pop stars. The wheels were put into motion thanks to Shane Filan’s mum, Mae, who happened to have Louis Walsh’s phone number. With a little help from Louis, they soon had their dream line-up finalised with founding members Kian Egan, Shane Filan and Mark Feehily, plus Dubliners Nicky Byrne and Brian McFadden, after a series of auditions. Fame came quite quickly and easily to the boys, but after five albums and worldwide success, 2004 saw their future

In 2005, Mark Feehily decided to follow in the footsteps of Boyzone’s Stephen Gately in announcing, “I am gay and I’m very proud.” This was partly due to the fact that Brian leaving a year earlier had made the group tighter and more determined to continue their success as a band. Their loyal fans continued to stick by them and yet again Westlife saw themselves gain a different audience, with more men attending their shows hoping to catch the Irish boy’s attention. Westlife had always said they would love to end their career having played Ireland’s national stadium, Croke Park. So many fans dreaded it when Croke Park was added to their Back Home tour 2008. On that evening many a fan sat awaiting the dreadful news that Westlife were no more. Many fans who made the trip to Dublin on 1st June 2008 to celebrate ten years of Westlife thought it would be the last time they saw their idols. For Westlife, playing to a sold out Croke Park full to the brim of die-hard Westlife fans plus their friends and loved ones, life could not get any better. What a way to celebrate ten years in the music industry! Westlife had always promised to return and they did not disappoint their fans. In late December 2009, Westlife appeared on the X Factor, where they exclusively performed brand new single What About Now. This was the first time they had not promoted a single in the traditional way via radio and a music video and it seemed to achieve the desired approach. What About Now reached number 2 in the UK charts, with their brand new album Where We Are also reaching the number 2 slot. Not bad for a band who had spent 12 months away from the industry being fathers, seeing the world and remembering who they were before the Westlife rollercoaster ride took over their lives. Westlife are well known for their pyrotechnically astonishing and fan-delighting tours. Their medleys always leave the fans wanting more. In 2007, they Performances performed a boyband medley which included hits will be held from Boyzone, Take That and Backstreet Boys, even at The O2 on 12–14 May incorporating the original dance routines. Another fan favourite was the Billie-Jean/She’s Back remix, which had them teasing fans by flashing their boxers. become uncertain as Brian McFadden decided to quit the band to try and save his marriage to Kerry Katona for the sake of his family. The four remaining ‘Lifers’ decided to pull together and take their latest album Turnaround on the road. The boys put their all into making the Turnaround tour just as good, if not better, than any of their previous tours. They knew that Brian’s departure meant the press would be out in force and this would be their time to shine. It had been a tough few months and this would also be the perfect way to thank their loyal fans for sticking by them and allowing their dreams to continue. They need not have worried, as their adoring fans came out in their thousands to show their love and support to the Westlife four. During the shows, Kian Egan would state one message, “Westlife are unbreakable”, to a resounding cheer every single night. Whatever Westlife do,

nless you book a ticket for one of the numerous summer festivals, it’s unlikely that you’ll get to hear more than one chart-busting artist in the same night – support acts are usually well received on the night, but hardly worth getting excited about. Sensing a gap in the traditional format of British pop concerts, superstars Dizzee Rascal and Lily Allen (two of 2009’s festival highlights) have announced they will co-headline in a 2010 mini-tour which includes a sell-out date at The O2. Lily Allen (whose current album It’s Not Me, It’s You has sold 1.5 million copies and features the hit singles Not Fair, 22 and the Number 1 record The Fear), was one of the biggest hits at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, T In The Park and V Festival. Having recently returned from a sell-out tour of the US and a number of live dates in Australia and Japan, Lily says “I’m really looking forward to playing these special shows – I’m a massive fan of what Dizzee does!” The popstar pair have a history together, and have worked together before this tour – in 2007 Lily appeared on Dizzee’s album Maths + English in the track Wanna Be. And of course, 2009 has been an important year for Dizzee Rascal. In the past 12 months alone he’s scored three Number 1 singles with Dance Wiv Me, Bonkers and the latest single Holiday, with each track being released on his own independent label Dirtee Stank. And that’s not to mention scooping an NME Award and GQ solo artist of the year, being nominated for an Ivor Novello Award and playing a barnstorming show at Glastonbury on the Pyramid stage. Dizzee says “Lily and I have both worked well in the past so it’s no doubt these shows will be nights to remember”.n

X Factor
GET YOUR
X FACTOR FIX
If you’re one of the many millions feeling a little adrift now that the 2009 series of The X Factor is over, then you’ll be counting down the days until the X Factor Live Tour hits The O2, says Claire Saunders
W
ith over 16 million people tuning in each week, the 2009 series of The X Factor has been the most popular to date. Packed full of incredible vocal talent, interesting characters (who could forget ‘Jedward’?) and a collection of unforgettable songs, the show was Britain’s weekly television highlight. The 2009 series of The X Factor was the sixth year running that the show had been produced – and more popular than ever, it attracted a record-breaking 200,000 auditionees, peaked at 19.7 million UK viewers (which is equal to a 63.2% audience share), and took a whopping 10 million votes during the nailbiting final show. Of course, this is all excellent news for Simon Cowell (50) who, as the show’s creator, owner, producer and main ‘character’, only started his television career eight years ago, when he was 42. Before taking over the entire genre of ‘talent show telly’, he was a full-time record-company executive – well known within the music industry, but that was as far as it went. “I just felt instinctively that by using television as a vehicle, we would have a better chance of selling records”, explains Cowell. “It was the record side of it which was the primary reason for getting involved, not wanting to get my ugly mug on TV.” But, it seems that Cowell’s “ugly mug” (his own words) is one of the most appealing elements of The X Factor. Week after week, viewers would switch to ITV1 on a Saturday and Sunday night, and delight in hearing his witty criticisms and inspiring praise directed at hopeful (and often hopeless) contestants. “I think you have to judge everything based on your personal taste”, reveals Cowell. “And if that means being critical, so be it. I hate political correctness. I absolutely loathe it.” And thank goodness – because

Cowell’s fantastically honest comments are one of the main reasons to watch the show. Among the most memorable quotes from The X Factor, Simon has told various auditionees: “Shave off your beard and wear a dress. You would be a great female impersonator”, “It’s like the outpatients of an insane asylum”, “You look nice, but your voice is distinctly average” and “If your lifeguard duties were as good as your singing, a lot of people would be drowning”. Of course, after the hysterical comedy of the auditions, Cowell gets serious and in series 6 the final line-up was impressive. Viewers were treated to a variety of themed shows ranging from big-band to Diva and the talented finalists gave it their all, as they belted out classic tunes (often with a personal twist) in an effort to win a place in the final show. Highlights included Stacey’s mesmerizing What a Wonderful World (by Louis Armstrong), It’s a New Life (with Michael Bublé) and Who wants to Live Forever (by Freddie Mercury); Olly’s catchy Twist and Shout and beautiful Angels (with Robbie Williams); and winner Joe’s “note-perfect” Where Do Broken Hearts Go? (by Whitney Houston) and Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me (which received a standing ovation). And now, finally, X Factor fans have another chance to witness the live action, as the finalists go on tour around the UK and Ireland this spring. The huge arena tour will visit all the UK’s major cities, starting on 12 February in Liverpool, with contestants performing classic songs, viewers’ favourites from the series and, of course, their No. 1 hit charity single You Are Not Alone. The artists taking part in the tour include Welsh sweetheart Lucie Jones, Essex favourite Stacey Solomon, series winner Joe McElderry, teenage heartthrob Lloyd Daniels, Jamie ‘Afro’ Archer, the Essex boy Olly Murs, stage-confident Danyl Johnson and the infamous John and Edward: Jedward. With last year’s tour selling out nationwide, tickets are set to be more sought-after than ever before… and after the excitement and drama of the last series, what are you waiting for? n

The Girls are Back in Town Rebecca Walton takes a moment to meet the WWE divas
that are the lovely Kelly Kelly and Maria to hear what we are to expect this time around So girls, for everyone out there, in your own words – What is a WWE Diva? M: I would say passionate, powerful, individually beautiful, strong and strong‑minded, definitely. K: Sexy, smart, powerful. I know you both have quite different stories, but how did you both get into the world of wrestling? K: I was a gymnast, straight out of high school and I was in my first year of college studying broadcast journalism and was modelling on the side. WWE saw me in a catalogue and called my agent; I went and trained for a week and they literally kicked my butt till I was throwing up in the ring, it was that bad. I was like “what am I doing?” and then I realised that this was the dream of a lifetime. Why would I not want to do this?
2
M: I actually entered in a diva search five years ago, and I didn’t win. I placed 5th so, I kept calling and said “I want a job, I want a job, give me a job, give me a job ...”, so finally they had a try out and I went down. They liked me and so they kept me and I have been here ever since. Women in wrestling, what’s your real opinion? M: I was always inspired by women wrestlers when I was younger so I hope that people get the same feeling about all of us and maybe even more as we do a lot of things with charity, for example with the Make A Wish Foundation. We’ve done so many different things with St Jude’s or going out to do a tribute to the troops so, not only is it women in wrestling, but women that are fighting for all these different causes. I am hoping that we inspire
of the guys’ pants ripped and, well, my grandma, let’s just say she was excited...
wwe
Do you find that your WWE colleagues are like your family as you spend so much time with them? K: I was so young when I first started and I had no idea what I was getting into. Things like we had to rent our own cars and hotel rooms’ and it was all so hard for me because I was so young. Especially considering I was too young to rent a car and things. So when I started Tommy Dreamer was like my father, he said, “You’re riding with me, this is what we are doing”, because I had no idea. What’s your favourite thing about being a wrestler? M: The feeling you get when you win. That amazing feeling, and people are yelling for you. It’s awesome! I’ve cried in the ring before and have been trying to hide it and its because I’m happy really. If you could go up against anyone in the ring, who would it be? M: I never got to wrestle Molly Holly and I would have loved to. She was like a craftsman in the ring, and she knew her craft. In your opinion, who are the best Tag team partners? M: I love working with Mikey, but only because we have such a history together. We go out there and we know exactly what is going to happen. But, every time we go to tag I swear she moves her hand and I miss and I have to go again and like finally tag and she comes in. K: I would probably say Melina. Since I have been on RAW they have always put us together and we really even each other out.
people and also that we are morale-boosters when we go overseas.
Favourite wrestler of all time? M: The Rock for looks, Leena for female ability, she is amazing and fearless. K: Stone Cold, obviously. I love him, I used to think he was so hot!
What is like to be a celebrity? Is it hard to get used to the fame and the things that come with it? M: For me I always wanted to be an entertainer; from a very young age I used to stand in front of the mirror ...with my toothbrush and be talking to myself in the mirror. I want to be a singer eventually; I’m coming out with an album actually. That’s really awesome for me. It’s kind of like my personal passion project, so for me wrestling has been awesome as it has given me a fan base. It has given us all this entire WWE universe that is amazing.
What sort of things would you suggest to young girls aspiring to be wrestlers just like you? K: Stay in school (laughs) and just know what you’re getting into. You need to realise that there are so many other things on top of the wrestling in this job. You need to be prepared and, of course, strong-willed. M: You also need to be tough-skinned and know that somebody is always going to say something about “Oh, you’re so fat, oh, you’re so skinny!” You just have to roll with the punches.
What do your friends and family think about you being wrestlers? K: My family are 100% behind me; they have been behind me since day one. My dad, my 70 year-old grandmother, everyone has always been there even when I first started out and was doing this exhibition thing. My poor father. He always stood by me and was like, I understand it’s just an act. M: Mine too, but there was once an incident, my grandma was in the front row, my yaya – she is 100% Greek. She was just watching the show, the guys were in the ring and all of a sudden one
The O2 is famous as a music venue; who is your favourite music artist or band? M: I would say Pink, because she goes out there and performs without lip-synching and does like the trapeze whilst she is doing it all, and she is so smoking. I like that she is a tough girl, she just looks aggressive. And lastly, what can we expect from the Divas this time round? M: You can expect the match to be awesome and fun and aggressive, definitely. n

starwars
The man behind C3PO Rebecca Walton talks to the legendary Anthony Daniels
about a unique event, at The O2 ; Star Wars in Concert
S
tar Wars in Concert is a unique multi-media event featuring music from all six of John Williams’ epic Star Wars scores. Narrated by the only man to appear in all six of the films – the legendary Anthony Daniels – the extravaganza, which returns to the UK after a 56 show stint across the USA, is going to be an incredible event. The world premiere of Star Wars in Concert was held at The O2 over Easter weekend 2009; nearly a year later this amazing show returns to London, and Anthony for one is very excited at the return. After the world premiere opening at The O2 last year, how does it feel to be back on the stage here? We’re coming back to The O2, where it all started, which is absolutely terrific. The first time I stood on
the empty stage, it felt absolutely wonderful. It’s a lovely shaped arena and it has a very good relationship with the audience. What were your first impressions when you were approached to narrate the concert? I wasn’t sure what to say as I’d been in quite a few symphony orchestras narrations and thought the music could stand on its own. But it’s more than a concert. It’s difficult to describe but it’s more than I ever expected. It’s a flattering role for me as it’s a big responsibility to have 12,000 people listening to you. How would you describe Star Wars in Concert for people that haven’t already seen it?
2
StarWars
It’s a big event to describe really; we pack one end of the arena with so much technology and visual equipment that the impact on the audience is amazing. As a mixture of music and film it’s hard to put Star Wars in Concert into a particular genre. It’s never been done before – it’s like a rock concert but with one of the best loved stories woven in. I come on stage and tell people the story of Star Wars – from the time when Darth Vader was a young boy to the climax when his own children defeat his evil plans. For people who are not massive Star Wars fans or not 100% familiar with the ins-and-outs of the plot, can they still enjoy the show? We tell the story very simply. Now that all six films are out, we can tell the full story from beginning to end. We see the relationship between Darth Vadar, Anakin Skywalker and the young boy (different personalities in one character). We can understand how he grows up and turns bad. For someone who has never seen Star Wars, this is an essential guide. There is obviously more than just the narration that brings this story to life, tell us more about it? As the narration is unfolding, the audience can enjoy a beautifully edited film by the Lucas staff and John Williams’ breathtaking score, which is a hugely important within the story. The music is bigger than any of the characters – even bigger than Jabba the Hut! The music has themes for each character, but it also has a huge personality of its own. You can come and see this as a Star Wars show but you can also come and see it as a family show.
Performances will be held at The O2 on 3,4 April. Tickets are available via telephone on 0844 856 0202 or visit www.theo2.co.uk
2
So does that mean there are changes from the original show? We have actually changed the show slightly from the first time it was staged at The O2. Anybody coming back will see differences and improvements. What are you hoping people will take away from this event? I want people to come to see a concert, but also to have a lot of fun. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, so leave the bow-tie at home – even better, come dressed as Hans Solo or Princess Leia! I want children to leave the concert with an interest in the music, and how it is made. I can’t play an instrument or sing, but if a kid takes up an instrument after seeing this, I think that would be a huge bonus to come from the show. Are you excited to be bringing the show back to British soil? We shot the Star Wars films at Elstree which is only half an hour away from The O2. A lot of people forget that Star Wars is actually based in England as well as the USA, so it feels very good to be coming back. n

Gabriella Cilmi
General Fiasco
Australian singer Gabriella Cilmi had a huge hit with the most-played song in the UK last year Sweet About Me. She is now returning with an edgier sound and feistier attitude. Ten is the sophomore album filled with lots of up-tempo funk and disco-inspired tracks as well as some sexy tracks. This album definitely marks her foray into more 1980s-inspired music.
Northern Irish General Fiasco – the name created by a combination of two terrible names the band thought of – are releasing their début album Buildings. Their first single, We are the foolish, released in 2009 was described as ‘rip-roaring verses’ and a catchy as hell ‘chorus’. We won’t expect anything less with this new material from the young band.

Boyzone This album sees the boys coming together to pay very special tribute to their friend and band member, Steven Gately. Showcasing a new sound and direction, Brother takes them down a road that is more heavily driven by rockier pop; with catchy choruses and huge melodies, it demonstrates how the sound has grown and progressed, without straying too far from their well-established pop roots.
Fun Lovin' Criminals
Album Title: Brother
It’s only when you hear them again, you realise how much you missed them. The New York alternative funk trio, Fun Lovin' Criminals, with four Top 10 albums to their name, return for the first time in five years, with the first classic, fantastic party album of the decade, Classic Fantastics, featuring collaborations with Roots Manuva and Paul Kaye. The multi platinum funk soul brothers return to play in the UK – this is one album and tour not to be missed.

Blood Bowl Blood Bowl is an ultra violent team sport, based on the Warhammer/American Football fantasy board game first created over 20 years ago. The game is turn-based, though can be played in a (fairly chaotic) real-time mode, and is a blend of tactics and brutal sporting violence loosely based on American Football, but with teams composed of elves, orcs and goblins, there are plenty of options for underhanded tactics – you can bribe the referees to look the other way as you cripple or trample annoying opponents and hire illegal wizards to give you a hand directly from the crowd. Blood Bowl offers a range of game modes, offering single quick matches, multiple season championships, a lengthy campaign as well as, of course, the opportunity to take on other players online. Long-time fans of Warhammer and Blood Bowl will almost certainly enjoy this offering, though newcomers may find the tutorials and game rules a challenge to get into, and the graphics are not as polished as they could be. Still, if marshalling a team of fantasy creatures in a wildly violent sporting arena sounds like your cup of tea, then Blood Bowl is the one for you. 6/10 OUT NOW FOR XBOX 360

Sasha returns
Dance music icon Sasha returns to matter on Saturday 6th March, when he’ll debut his brand new A/V DJ set with accompanying visuals matter’s in-house team, The Pixel Addicts
R
eturning to the venue for the first time since late 2008, we caught up with him to find out what he’s got in store for the show.
What’s on the agenda for your matter show on March 6th, where you’ll debut a brand new Audio/ Visual set? My recent tour in Australia was the first time in a while that I’ve toured with a visual aspect. I’m working with some visual artists from Montreal who do a lot of stuff with Cirque du Soleil – they gave me a load of content and came out and DJed on the tour too. That was the first stage of it – the second incarnation is going to be taken a step further by The Pixel Addicts for the matter show; my first club set with a visual element completely synched to it. I’m really excited. Working with the Canadians and the Pixel Addicts, were there any specific ideas or elements you wanted to bring to the visuals for matter that would raise it above what you’ve done before? Yeah, I worked with the guys on storyboards and developing an identity to it, and I looked at what other people were doing and the things I really liked. I was inspired by things like Etienne De Crecy’s cube, and the Nine Inch Nails guys: the visual aspect to their shows has always been really powerful. I ended up working with the Canadians because I went to
2
Montreal to do a show a couple of years ago. I walked into this huge exhibition centre and the visuals they’d done for it were just out of this world, so I toured with them – we did a very low-budget tour in the states and they made it look fantastic. For the Big Day Out tour we had a bit more budget and they developed specific content for that. It’s just about developing that and taking it further. Can you tell us a bit about a couple of the other artists sharing the bill with you at matter: DJ Three and Charlie May, who you’ve worked with extensively in the past? DJ Three’s a very close friend of mine from New York - he used to be based out of Tampa, Florida. He’s just an amazing DJ – one of my favourites to play with and to listen to. He always takes people on beautiful journeys – he’s the perfect DJ to play into the early hours of the morning, because he’s very good at playing that wonky sound that belongs in club after 6am. Before I worked with Charlie May I was a massive fan of Spooky, they were very influential to me. When I started to work with him there was just an emotion to his music that was so powerful: we really see things the same way when it comes to melody – whenever he sits at the keyboard, magic happens. We have a very close connection musically.n
Sasha headlines matter on Saturday 6th March, with support from Charlie May (live), DJ Three, Aeroplane, Friendly Fires (DJ set) and Paul Woolford. Tickets are £15 advance from www.matterlondon.com.
