We want to hear from you! How far have you travelled? Who is your favourite artist of all time? What do you love about The O2? Keep an eye out to see if we mention you. Hello,

Hi Venue,

Help!

Dear Venue,

I’m coming to Carmen at The O2 arena in May.

I’m a big Rihanna fan. She’s playing at the arena in May. How can I get a letter to her?

I think I lost my cardigan at Whitney Houston. It wasn’t expensive but I’d love to get it back. Can you help me?

I’d like to bring a group of students to The O2 in June. Can you advise what there is for them to see – they are particularly interested in the music business.

Where can I find a seating plan for this event?

Thanks Mandy, Essex

Thanks, Julia, East Sussex Dear Julia, Seating plans for every event at The O2 arena can be found on the website of Ticketmaster, our main ticketing partner. Kind Regards Michael, London Dear Michael, I would recommend the British Music Experience; an exhibition on the history of British music, which is on at The O2 bubble, our exhibition centre. British Music Experience is very interactive and suitable for students – not only can you see memorabilia from music history but you can also make your own music and dance recordings. The British Music Experience also has an education programme with workshops and master classes covering a wide range of topics in the music industry. You can check out the exhibition and its education programme at www. britishmusicexperience.com.

Darius Campbell to ta ke starring role in on e exclusive performance of Carmen at The O 2 Darius Campbell has announced he will be performing in the first opera to be staged at The O2; Raymond Gubbay’s spectacular production of Carmen. This will be Darius’ first major operatic role since he won ITV’s Popstar to Operastar. Darius will undertake the principal role of Escamillo on Sunday 23 May at 2.30pm, whose world-famous aria Song of the Toreador, he sang in Popstar to Operastar, captivating millions of viewers. Darius commented: “It’s an absolute privilege to undertake the role of Escamillo in Carmen, one of the most famous operas in history. I thoroughly enjoyed my time on Popstar to Operastar and learning the discipline of opera was tough, but hugely rewarding. This opportunity, however, takes it to the next level and I cannot wait to get started. I want to personally thank Raymond and the rest of the production for allowing me to be part of what will no doubt be an incredible experience for all concerned, both cast and audience.” Raymond Gubbay, impresario and classical music promoter, added: “It is a great pleasure to be welcoming Darius to this exciting project for his debut operatic performance. I watched Darius’ progress on Popstar to Operastar with great interest. To move from pop to opera is hugely ambitious, but I know Darius’ passion and dedication to this project will result in a very fine performance as Escamillo.” Tickets are available via www.theo2.co.uk or by calling 0844 856 0202

Whether or not you’ve got tickets to see Lady Gaga at The O2 this May, be sure to visit the British Music Experience, where half term is Gaga Fashion Week. The museum will be running workshops throughout the week, offering both adult and younger visitors the chance to recreate some of her most iconic outfits. What’s more, kids go free when accompanied by a paying adult. For all the little monsters, there will be the opportunity on Sunday 30 May and Monday 31 May to make their own versions of the now infamous telephone hat, and throughout the week why not take them down to create their own Gaga-inspired accessories? Celebrity stylist, Jacqueline White will also be on hand to host an exclusive adult fashion workshop, with the help of make-up artist Jacqui McElroy. Including trade secrets as well as a hand-made accessory and fully customised outfit to keep, this really is the perfect day out for the fashionista among us. There are only a limited number of places so prebooking is essential! For more information, please visit www.britishmusicexperience.com/go-gaga

Nothing but Net

With the roaring success of previous years’ NBA Europe Live, this season it’s back for a fourth consecutive year and its time to ‘kiss some rim’. Rebecca Walton

finds out more...

October 2010 will see one of the most well-known teams in NBA history, the LA Lakers, take on the Minnesota Timberwolves, one of the first teams to ever play here at the first NBA Europe Live London at The O2. NBA Commissioner David Stern is

one of many who is eagerly anticipating the sports return to the capital, “NBA Europe Live and the return of NBA teams to Europe for a forth consecutive year is a testament to our ongoing commitment to grow the game of basketball and engage our fans in the region”. London has previously hosted three sellout

2

NBA games and this one is set to be no different. With the amazing success of the Great Britain basketball team, the sport has witnessed a sharp increase in both interest and participation across Kobe Bryant – LA Lakers the country. The LA Lakers from the sunny state of California are one of the most well-known names in NBA history, and even someone who has lived under a rock will, over the years, have heard names such as Magic Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal, two of their most famous players of all time. Currently the 2009 NBA champions after defeating the Orlando Magic team, they have also recently been named as the greatest NBA franchise of all time. The man to watch is their captain, Kobe Bryant and, with a huge celebratory following including Jack Nicholson and our very own David Beckham this is one team who are worth their weight. Their opposition comes in the form of the Minnesota Timberwolves, one of the youngest teams in the NBA, having only been founded in 1989. Not a team to be taken lightly, this Minneapolis team are made of stronger stuff. They are most well known for their record-breaking player trade of 2007, with Kevin Garnett being exchanged for Al Jefferson, Theo Ratliff, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, Ryan Gomes, two first-round picks and cash considerations. The game has the added extra, that the current Timberwolves coach is none other than Kurt Rambis, who spent more than a decade as an assistant on the LA Lakers’ bench. Speaking of the upcoming game Phil Jackson, the current LA Lakers manager, seemed

I know how passionate the fans are in the UK, and I look forward to putting on a show against the Timberwolves”

Past NBA Europe Live Highlights – London 2007 The Minnesota Timberwolves became the first NBA team play at The O2 twice after they battled the Boston Celtics back in 2007. All eyes were at this point on Kevin Garnett, who was facing his former club just weeks after a record-breaking transfer to the Celtics.

2008 This year saw a battle between the New Jersey Nets and Miami Heat. While it was a tight contest on the court, the country will remember this event more for the fact that a British personal trainer bamboozled Devin Harris, on a Stockwell street one-on-one contest.

2009 Team GB’s very own Luol Deng was the centre of attention when the NBA hit London last October. Despite being on the bench during the closing stages of the game, his Chicago Bulls teammates managed to produce an enthralling end to their match with the Utah Jazz.

excited. “I’ve stopped in London but never actually got off a plane there, so I’m looking forward to visiting and participating in a basketball game there’. As their first trip to Europe since 1991, this will be a rare opportunity to catch this awesome force in action, live at The O2. Both teams are eagerly anticipating the tour, allowing them to give something back to the UK audiences who rarely get to see these enormous sports stars in the flesh. “On behalf of my teammates and the entire Los Angeles Lakers organisation, I want to say how excited we are to be coming to London on October 4 to take on the Minnesota Timberwolves at The O2 as part of NBA Live,” said Kobe Bryant. “I know how passionate fans are in the UK, and I look forward to putting on a show for what promises to be a great game.” The NBA Europe tour also takes in stops at Milan and Paris before concluding at the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, Spain, when the LA Lakers take on Regal FC Barcelona on 7 October. Two-time Most Valuable Player, the LA Lakers’ Pau Gasol, will return to play against his former team. Renowned as one of the most formidable teams in basketball history here in Europe, FC Barcelona, who recently qualified for the 2010 Euroleague Final Four, counts five European titles, 15 Spanish League titles, and 20 Spanish National Cup titles among its many accomplishments. On top of all the breathtaking court action, the NBA will also be conducting a number of different events in the local community, as well as programmes in London, Barcelona, Paris and Milan as part of its NBA Cares Initiative. So keep your eyes peeled for the announcements of what to expect here in London. Take our word for it, grab a ticket and get ready for cheerleaders, hot dogs and the boys to be shooting some serious hoops.n

“We’re heading into Paris and London and playing against prestigious teams in the Lakers and (New York) Knicks, so I think that it is going to be a real treat for the fans. Basketball as a whole is growing and has been for quite some time, so it will be exciting to see that.

THE CLASSIC ROCK STAR An iconic figure in 20th century rock music, Sarah Collinson profiles Rod Stewart

I

f someone said the name ‘Rod Stewart’ what would you think of? a) The famous shaggy-haired singer with the distinctly raspy voice b) An ex-professional footballer with an obsession with model railways c) A CND activist who was arrested numerous times for sit-ins around London in the ‘60s It’s obvious isn’t it? a). With 250 million single and album sales worldwide, 27 UK top 10 albums and 5 platinum albums this decade, you would have had to have your head in the sand not to be aware of the rock legend that is Rod Stewart… but you might be surprised to know that if you’d picked option b) or c) you would also have been right on the money. Stewart’s musical career has been phenomenal. He started with the classic rock star beginning of climbing the ladder from small band to ad hoc group, touring the small bars and gritty venues of London, Brighton and northern Europe in the hope of that big break. He was ‘discovered’ by Hoochie Coochie Men singer Long John Baldry in the early ‘60s (while playing the harmonica drunk on a Twickenham Station platform) and, after a few unsuccessful recordings with the band, left to join the Jeff Beck Group playing with Ronnie Wood. The band achieved critical acclaim and successes in America and, although he left due to personal disagreements, it gave Stewart the platform he needed to break out from the musical masses. He joined new band Faces in 1969 and, although the group quickly attracted a following on both sides of the Atlantic, Stewart’s solo successes were what really started to shine. He became a household name in 1971 when Maggie May –

released as a B-side of minor single Reason to Believe – hit number one in the UK and USA simultaneously. Though Faces broke up in 1975, Stewart’s solo career far from faltered, releasing UK number 1 Sailing that same year, topping the Billboard chart for eight weeks in ’76 with Tonight’s the Night and again achieving the elusive simultaneous UK / US

number 1 in ’78 with Do Ya Think I’m Sexy. This is the Rod that the world knows and loves. But, what you probably don’t realise is that music was his second career choice. Stewart originally dreamed of being a footballer and was actually signed to Brentford FC, only making the transition to music because sport seemed like a bit too much effort – “a musician’s life is a lot easier and I can also get drunk and make music, and I can’t do that and play football.” In the years before he made the transition to international star, Stewart amassed a lifetime’s worth of unexpected history that makes his past one of the most colourful in rock and roll. He worked as a newspaper boy, grave digger, fence erector and sign writer, and lived for a period on a beatnik houseboat. He claimed to believe fervently in left-wing politics (although his true commitment to the cause has been questioned somewhat, as he seemed to see the meetings mainly as a place to meet girls!), and joined the Aldermaston Marches and London CND sit-ins, getting arrested three times in the process. He was also once deported from Barcelona for ‘vagrancy’ when he and his first band mate ‘Wizz Jones’ busked around northern Europe, sleeping under bridges because they couldn’t afford anywhere better. Most surprising, though, is his lifelong passion for the very un-rock and roll hobby of model trains. He currently has a 23 x 124-foot scale layout in his California home, and once said he’d rather be in a railway magazine than a music one. His obsession has even been blamed for the breakdown of his second marriage – slightly different to the usual stories of rock star excess! But, quite rightly, we should continue to focus on option a), the shaggy haired singer. He’s been on the scene since the early ‘60s and, having just released new studio album Soulbook (his seventh UK top 10 album this decade) and kicking off a 7-date UK and Ireland tour this Spring, he shows no sign of slowing down! With a career spanning five decades and producing 62 hit singles, Rod Stewart really is one of the music legends of our time (despite the model trains). n

Eddie Kadi

A

RISING STAR

Josephine O’Donoghue quizzes comedian

Eddie Kadi about his fantastically funny brand of humour, his rise to fame and his up-coming gig at The O2

S

omething of an ‘overnight’ success (at least it seemed that way to us, the mainstream audience), Eddie Kadi has done remarkably well to grow from humorous university compère, to national comedy genius in just a few short years. So popular is his infectiously funny stand-up routine, that it hasn’t taken him long to build a loyal and appreciative fan base. In 2009, Eddie quickly sold out two shows at indigO2, well before he became a star persona within the UK comedy circuit. In a meteoric rise, Eddie is set to return to The O2 for an even bigger show in the arena, on 4 September this year. Taking the comedy world by storm, Eddie always has audiences laughing in their seats from the very start of a show; his versatile comic style has captured the attention and imagination of people from different cultures and backgrounds, and his humour appeals to all. A nominee in the Channel 4 Talent Comedy Awards, Eddie is widely considered to be the UK’s premier black comedian for the new decade, renowned

2

for his fantastic delivery, clean comedy (a rarity these days) and sometimes unpredictable material. I caught up with him a few weeks ago to find out more... Can you outline your career background? My journey as an entertainer started at Kingston University where I studied media technology. I started performing as a compère at university showcases and this very quickly led to me performing stand-up comedy. Why did you decide to become a comedian? It was a natural progression from being a compère/ show-host. I was always passionate about entertaining the audience and enjoyed making them laugh. It did take some convincing from my manager to do standup, but I enjoyed it the first time and still enjoy it today. I guess I’ve always been a comedian around family and friends, but stand-up was just a new discipline. Have you always enjoyed making people laugh? I’m from a family with a great sense of humour; long before I got into comedy, I would watch my parents exchange banter and throw in my two pence worth. This was then carried into my group of friends and I was always the loud one of the camp! I love being able to change a person’s mood in a second. How would you describe your brand of comedy? My comedy is unpredictable, energetic and theatrical. I like to make a proper show of my performance, from singing and dancing to audience interaction. I like to make it about the audience as much as it is about me and, most importantly, make it accessible for the whole family to enjoy, regardless of age group. Who would you compare yourself to? I am always wary about comparisons, but I can relate to Lee Evans and his energetic performance; he really gives it his all. I draw a lot of inspiration from Will Smith’s ability to break down barriers and appeal to all types of audiences – which is what I aim to do with my comedy. And, of course, Jonathan Ross’s interview technique is second to none, and I like to inject a bit

comedians looking for a break? Be yourself and believe in what you do wholeheartedly before going onstage. Do not be afraid to bring something new into the industry, and break tradition. My main piece of advice is when someone is giving you advice, it’s based on their limit and not yours – so never give up.n

of that interactivity with my guests at the show. Who are your favourite comedians? Lee Evans; Bernie Mac; Rowan Atkinson; Michael McIntyre; and Tony Woods. Where do you find material for your shows? Everywhere! I’m inspired by everyday scenarios, stories told by my parents, random thoughts in my head. I’ve realised that comedy has made me a lot more observant and aware of my surroundings. I find myself laughing at my thoughts and then I’ll think “Woah, I need a pen!” Has your comedy ever offended anyone? Not as far as I know, and I hope it continues to be that way. I’d like to think that my comedy brings people together rather than causes segregation. Do you agree with the common statement that ‘comedy has a duty to say the unspeakable’? Comedy is a form of expression and for many it is an outlet. My thoughts and opinions will differ to others, but in terms of it being a ‘duty’, well that depends on the comedian and what their purpose is. How do you feel to be playing at The O2? I am very excited and proud to see myself and the team around me take these steps. It was great to perform at indigO2 twice last year. I have been to several concerts at The O2 and seen a lot of artists I admire, so to see my name next to them is an honour. For me there is no better venue in the world. What can audiences expect? The audience can expect an amazing night of comedy and entertainment. The show is not just about me, the audience play a big part coupled with my very special guests. It WILL be a night to remember! Have you ever been heckled or do you generally enjoy good, responsive audiences? I haven’t been heckled as of yet. I’ve come to an understanding that the audience are there to be entertained. I guess they usually heckle for a reason, but if I ever do I’ll have fun with them... What’s coming up for you in 2010? A lot is planned for this year. I’m the voice for two characters in a fantastic animation series called Tinga Tinga Tales on CBBC, which also features Lenny Henry, Meera Syal and Jocelyn Jee Essien. My country of birth is the Democratic Republic of Congo, and I’ll go back for the first time in 18 years to shoot a documentary, as well as work with the charity organisation Warchild. I will also launch my foundation (the Eddie Kadi Foundation) to support the young people in the region. In 2010 I will also be hosting some dates on the NDubz UK tour, as well taking part in a few comedy tours around the country, as well as numerous shows abroad and some more film and television projects. What’s your ambition? My ultimate ambition is to have a primetime TV chat show. What has been your greatest achievement in comedy? Prior to being listed in The O2 arena programme, selling out indigO2 twice in one year was a great achievement for both myself and the great people in my team. Are you enjoying your radio work? Why did you decide to branch out into radio? I love radio! It’s like a verbal diary, except with millions listening. It is actually extremely therapeutic and I would love to do a lot more radio. What advice would you give to any young

E

verybody knows Bon Jovi. Appearing on the music scene in the mid-80s and named after their lead singer, Bon Jovi rose to fame in 1986 with the release of their anthemfilled rock album Slippery When Wet, which featured tracks Living on a Prayer and You Give Love a Bad Name that quickly became renowned classics. In fact, you might not know but Slippery When Wet still holds the record in the US for the hard rock album longest at number 1 and by 2009 it had become one of the biggest selling albums of all time. After storming into the charts in the 80s, 90s and noughties with eleven studio albums, two compilations and one live album (with worldwide sales topping 120 million), Bon Jovi are officially (well, according to me anyway) the world’s coolest rock band. Far from stagnating after the 80s glory days – as so many popular bands did – this act has gone from strength to strength, and can rock out in any style from electro or country, all the way up to full-on anthem-rock! Rocking right through the decades, the band continued to produce successful albums through the 80s and 90s, with New Jersey still holding the record for most Top 10 singles from a rock album. They leapt feet first into the new millennium with Crush – an album with a modern rock feel that brought a new generation of fans into the Bon Jovi camp – and expanded their musical boundaries with the electronic Bounce (2002), and country-andwestern inspired Lost Highway (2007).

In 2009 they have firmly re-asserted their position as kings of rock with The Circle – a return to their rock roots that Jon Bon Jovi himself has called “a turn-theguitars-back-up record”. To celebrate this return to classic rock form, Bon Jovi are embracing a two-year stadium tour across the US and Europe, which includes a summer residency at The O2 – the first series of its kind since the planned Michael Jackson dates last year. As the first act ever to play live at the venue, Bon Jovi are no strangers to the arena and it’s a residency that’s caused waves of excitement in British fans. Tickets sold out almost immediately for the initial dates and, when more nights were added, tickets sold at a rate of 18 per second, with 23,000 going in the first two hours. The gigs promise to be some of the biggest dates in the British music calendar, as the band return to what they do best – playing live to thousands of fans. Bon Jovi have always been renowned for their massive tours, and have been lauded again and again for producing some of the consistently best shows in music history. You might think that, after nearly three decades of constant touring, the band might prefer some down time, but Jon recently claimed, “I can’t believe I’m even saying this, but I can’t wait to go on the road again”. And if you’re one of the thousands who have managed to get a precious ticket to see the rockers back to their original form, I’m sure you’d second that. n

B

orn in Trinidad, Billy came from humble beginnings to being known as the “biggest black recording star Britain has ever produced” – no small achievement! As a child, he moved and settled in London’s East End and before long, the ‘calypso crazy kid’ had fallen in love with soul singers including Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, alongside pop groups like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. His first break came when he signed to GTO records; he released his debut album in 1976, the self-titled Billy Ocean and his second single was the popular Love Really Hurts Without You, which reached No. 2 in the UK charts. Two top 20 singles followed, Love on Delivery and Stop Me, before Red Light Spells Danger became a smash hit in both the UK and the US. Billy’s move to Jive Records provided instant success, and he quickly upped his international reputation with the million selling American number 1 single Caribbean Queen (for which Billy won a Grammy for best R&B Vocal), followed by Loverboy, and Suddenly, which became the first of Billy’s killer ballads. Perhaps his most memorable hit came with the release of When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Gets Going, which was used as the theme to the 1985 Hollywood blockbuster The Jewel Of The Nile, starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. This feel good anthem went straight to number 1 in the UK and number 2 in the US, cementing Ocean’s reputation as a major star. Fast forward to the last decade, and in 2007 Billy came back to perform his hits again, this time with his daughter Cherie on backing vocals, with live dates in the UK and Europe, USA, Canada, and the Caribbean. The tour was a great

success and culminated in more writing and recording. In 2008 Billy was back in the studio for the first time in 15 years, recording his brand new album, Because I Love You. So now, in 2010, and due to popular demand, Billy will be bringing his infectious blend of Caribbean soul, funk, pop and R&B back to London, at indigO2 on 9 June. As the biggest black recording star Britain has ever produced (shifting no less than 30 million albums), the award-winning R&B singer has enjoyed a stunning career filled with dozens of hugely popular hits, a selection of which he will be performing at this one live date. Billy’s uplifting and heartfelt vocal style has earned him the respect and admiration of both his audiences and peers across the world. This one-off appearance at indigO2 marks a hugely anticipated return to London for one of the country’s best-loved artists, and is one definitely not to be missed!n

Leona Lewis

POP PRINCESS Annabel Harrison looks back at Leona Lewis’ journey to the top of the charts in anticipation of her 2010 tour

T

hat was absolutely fantastic”. So said Simon Cowell, famously hard to impress, to curlyhaired, shyly smiling 21-year-old Leona, one hopeful from tens of thousands, after she sang Over The Rainbow for her first audition. By Christmas that year, Leona Lewis, a receptionist from Islington, had been crowned Leona Lewis, winner of The X Factor 2006, and it was clear there was something special about her. Week by week, she tackled huge songs flawlessly, and in the final the public voted for her breathtaking, star-in-the-making voice. Leona’s debut single, A Moment Like This, broke world records after being downloaded more than 50,000 times within 30 minutes of its release and it rocketed to number 1, staying there for four weeks and eventually selling 830,000 copies. In one night, Leona had won a £1million recording contract and the means to follow her dreams. She dismissed critics who commented on anything other than her music: “I’m very ambitious and hard-working – you have to have that in you to go through a process like The X Factor.” And hard work began young. Leona attended the prestigious BRIT School, which also trained Amy Winehouse and Adele, and recorded demo albums. None of these were released and we may never have heard Leona’s voice if her long-term boyfriend, Lou Al-Chamaa, had not persuaded her to delay university plans and enter The X Factor. The rest, as they say, is history. Leona has become a global, multi-platinum-selling artist and, often referred to by a simple mononym, she joins the ranks of Madonna, Whitney and Mariah. A chart topper on both sides of the Atlantic, Leona’s success swiftly eclipsed that of former X Factor winners Steve Brookstein and Shayne Ward, and none have matched it since. Debut album Spirit was the biggest selling album of 2007 in the UK and it has since sold over 6.5 million copies worldwide. Its chart status was no surprise to The X Factor-loving public, but what propelled Leona to star status was America’s reaction. In April 2008, she smashed the most impressive record of all, as the first British artist to top the Billboard 200 with a debut album. Spirit is packed with classic pop, soul and up-tempo songs, but power ballads are its trump cards: emotion-

2

filled Bleeding Love topped 30 charts and sold 9 million copies worldwide. Leona had signed a five-album contract in the US with record industry mogul Clive Davis after Davis told Simon Cowell, “you may have a Whitney Houston on your hands”. With Leona’s talent and the combined clout of Davis and Cowell, the sky was the limit. Success continued into 2008 as Spirit singles charted consistently well. Snow Patrol cover Run was released as a downloadonly single in the UK, netting Leona another number 1, and she performed for a worldwide audience, singing at the Beijing Olympics closing ceremony and recording the theme song for smash hit film Avatar. Leona continued to be recognised for her pitch-perfect vocals, receiving three Grammy and four BRIT nominations and winning two MOBO Awards. Riding on the wave of these accolades, Leona’s highly anticipated second album, Echo, was released worldwide in November

Leona Lewis 2009; more guitar-driven than Spirit, Echo focuses on big emotions, sweeping melodies and spine-tingling top notes and this resulted in another multi-platinum record to add to Leona’s collection. Leona’s first full UK show was on home turf at the Hackney Empire in London, and was praised as “a sterling debut from a blistering Brit talent – bring on the arenas”. And this call has been answered. Leona’s first live arena tour launches in May 2010 and she is playing four shows at The O2 as her only London dates. She has declared this opportunity “a dream come true” and it promises to be a spectacular show from one of the purest and most beautiful voices in music. After the original announcement tickets sold at record speeds up and down the country and, due to unprecedented demand, Leona added three extra live dates. Not bad for her first-ever solo arena tour. Despite all this success, Leona remains down to earth. She cares passionately about her music, not fame and fortune – “as long as I can do music, I will always be happy”. She cares about her family, friends and fans. She cares about the world around her. But don’t mistake a quiet, sensitive, ethical trait for anything other than what it is: Leona is a strong woman with a conscience and an equally strong will to pursue her passion. Simon Cowell stated, three years ago, that Leona would transcend X Factor fame to become “one of the best female singers ever to come out of this country”, and Simon, as usual, was right. In an increasingly celebritycentric world, Leona is simply a world-class, old-school star, with no frills and no gimmicks: just a voice which can silence an arena and send shivers down your spine. n

efore dominating the music charts and gaining worldwide acclaim, Amy Winehouse, Keane, Hot Chip and Razorlight all performed at City Showcase, London’s essential new music festival. This unique and inspiring event is a must-see for anyone wanting a glimpse of future musical diamonds in the rough. This year, City Showcase expands its performances at venues across London, including two hotly anticipated nights at The O2. Headlining on 8 May is genre-bending star Master Shortie, who’ll be celebrating his new label deal, as well as his 21st birthday. Joining Master Shortie are the hugely talented Morning Orchestra, one of Brighton’s finest young acts, playing their own infectious brand of sunshine pop. The group’s 50s and 60s influenced sound is retro yet refreshing, with the soulful voice of singer David Yeoman putting melody at the forefront of their music. With harmonies galore, shaking rhythms and downright dirty guitars, The Morning Orchestra present an eclectic mix not to be missed. Also performing are up-and-coming rockers, Scott

Raba and the Ace – an authentic pop/rock sound with essences of folk and country. It’s the Manic Street Preachers meets the Kings of Leon, with a little something of their own. They’ll be joined by one of the country’s most versatile breakthrough artists, Lykez, who, along with her band, rocks out a live hip hop set to fill the dance floor with pumping electro pop beats. 9 May sees the launch of City Showcase’s brand new event ‘Roots & Flutes’ – a celebration of classical and traditional music from across the globe. With traditional takes on classical music to more diverse interpretations, this mix of old and new creates a summer, carnival atmosphere in the restaurants and bars of The O2. Camilla Kerslake, with her beautiful vocals, then headlines an evening concert of emerging British talent at the British Music Experience. The search for the next wave of new UK talent has begun. All types of music from electro to pop, rock to urban and performers from bands to singer songwriters, and solo artists to DJ’s will be showcased in this unique weekend of fun and vibrant classical, world and contemporary music, all at The O2. n

nown as “the poster boy of a DIY underground scene”, Master Shortie’s fresh, enthusiastic self-made man approach to making and releasing his music is an inspiration. Describing himself as a “rapper, entrepreneur, samplemeister and indie/ rap pioneer”, he’ll be headlining City Showcase at the British Music Experience on 8 May, the same day as his 21st birthday, and we discover the star has a lot to celebrate. How did you come to get involved with City Showcase? I’d always known about City Showcase and the great work they do to support and promote new British music. Building industry awareness and relationships is important for any new artist, so I’m a big fan. When they contacted my management to headline the British Music Experience, I thought it would be dope to perform on my 21st and celebrate it with my fans in one big rave. It’ll be a gig to remember! What can the audience expect from your performance? I’ll do some tracks from the ADHD album and a few new ones too. The live show is probably my favourite bit about being an artist. Seeing me live, 99 per cent of the time is with my band. I like converting people who come to a show not really being a fan, so that they leave a fan. My music is very different to what you’d expect and London crowds are always the harshest critics, but I really respect them for it. Nothing compares to a London gig and at The O2 especially, as this is where I used to chill with my friends. What have you got planned for this year? I’ve just signed to Jive/Sony USA, so I’ll be releasing tracks in America this year. I’ve done some shows outside the UK before, like Marseille, Paris, Austria, but not many, so going over there is really exciting. Being in control of my promotion, record releases, styling and marketing will always be important to me, but giving up some control to work with other creative teams comes with the territory to take it to the next level. How would you describe your music? I’m eclectic. I love loads of different genres of music and I just try and bring it all together really. I don’t limit myself to being part of one scene or group of people. If you’re an indie kid you’re an indie kid, if you’re a grime kid you’re a grime kid, if you’re into reggae then you chill with the reggae guys.

Whereas me, I’m dodging in and out of different crowds, because each crowd and every person has a different thing to offer me. What have been some of the highlights of your live shows so far? Well, I did my own concert at indigO2 and that was dope. There was a tube strike on the day, and they hadn’t sold many tickets at all. I was nervous that noone would turn up, but as I walked up on the stage it was just completely packed! That’s a dope memory. Also, the festival season was cool, doing Wireless, Reading and Leeds, Radio 1 Big Weekend. n

run to the beat

POUND THE STREETS A half marathon with live music to motivate you around the 13.1 mile course – is this an easy feat or impossible task? Rebecca Walton looks more closely at Run to the Beat 2010

O

n 27 September 2009, 15,000 lycra-clad bodies (or 30,000 trainer-clad feet if you prefer) headed down to The O2, all geared up to compete in London’s half marathon – aptly titled Run to the Beat. All participants are cheered along the 13.1 mile course (which winds through Greenwich and South East London), by some of the best up-and-coming music acts around. 2009 saw London’s very own hip hop master of grime, Bashy, open and start the race, whilst indie pop princesses Von Kleet, the lads from West London, Dega Breaks, plus DJ and solo singer Eliza Doolittle kept spirits high throughout the rest of the course. For anyone who thinks a half marathon is too much to manage, or is something they haven’t done before, Run to the Beat is definitely the best introduction to marathon running on offer in London. The live music acts are chosen by the team at City Showcase by specific genre, and the musical beats help improve motivation at the many different stages of the circuit. The various beats selected for the race provide a much-needed boost by matching an appropriate tempo with each section of the course, thus increasing performance up to a remarkable 20 per cent. “The run will be alive with sound as we deliver a kaleidoscope of motivational tunes along the entire length of the course, which will be stylishly interwoven throughout,” says Dr Costas Karageorghis from Brunel University. “The music that will be played during the half marathon will be scientifically selected to lift moods, alleviate fatigue and match the physiological demands of the event, which increases as the finish line approaches.” Dr Karageorghis, who is an integral part of the music selection for the event, has 20 years of scientific research behind him, looking at the effects of music on physical performance. Studies show that running to the beat can help athletes raise their game by approximately 10 per cent which means that all the participants should be reaching their optimum performance level whilst enjoying the festival atmosphere and carnival crowd.

This year the date is set as 26 September and the 17,000 places are filling up fast. Once again, the race starts at the world-famous venue, The O2, and the 13.1 mile route will be lined with the popular music artists ready to fill runners with the inspiration and strength to get them across the finishing line. Definitely the most fun half marathon around, Run to the Beat really is a smile-a-mile event and a brilliant starting point for runners young and old. With scientific research backing the race, even the most unfit amongst us will be able to complete this momentous challenge, along with a good training programme and some good, old fashioned persistence. The brilliant team at City Showcase will once again handpick the acts to perform on the route, so why not get yourselves down to the showcase on 8 and 9 May at the British Music Experience to hear for yourself the quality of the performers. Then it’s ready, steady, go – and we will see you at the finish line!n

Train Save Me San Francisco

Katie Melua The House

It’s been four years since Train took their break, but the boys are finally back and haven’t forgotten to take along their much-loved, feel good rock songs with them in the launch of their new album, Save Me San Francisco. Arguably, this is Train’s best album yet! Make sure you listen to Hey, Soul Sister, This Ain’t Goodbye and Parachute.

Stunning singer Katie Melua has just released her breathtaking new album, The House, which is both expressive in its lyrics, and musically adventurous. She is undoubtedly an extraordinarily gifted vocalist. The Flood, in particular, which is her new single, highlights Melua’s captivating voice. Dont miss this.

Released: 3 May

game zone This month we review Metro 2033 In action packed, post-apocalyptic Moscow, Ryan Cope checks out Metro 2033 It’s dark and the shadows around you are moving. You’re breathing heavily, not much oxygen left in your gas mask. The light from your torch flickers as it is about to stop working. You check your ammo – only one clip left. A growl echoes from somewhere in front of you. The light finally dissipates into blackness. Your breathing quickens. A vile and monstrous face is seen as you light up the air with your gunfire. Make every shot count. This is life in the underground metro system. This is Metro 2033. Adapted from the novel of the same name by Dmitry Glukhovsky, Metro 2033 is a gripping tale about a dark future in which humanity must fight for its very existence, not only one against another, but also against ferocious mutants and their overwhelming numbers. Set in Moscow in the year 2033, the remaining populace is living in the old underground metro systems, after a nuclear war destroyed the surface. You play as Artyom, one of the survivors who is forced to leave his home and set out on a mission to stop a new and deadly threat that could mean the end for mankind.

As you traverse the abandoned tunnels of the metro, you will quickly begin to see that this is a very atmospheric game. The lighting is gloomy, the air foggy and visibility dim, even with a flashlight leading your way. Eerie sounds whisper their way to you through the emptiness – a kick of a can, the crunch of some glass or the creak of some wood. You’ll be on edge all the way, unsure if there will be someone, or something, waiting for you ahead. The first-person shooter mechanics aren’t revolutionary, but there are added twists that add a nice touch, unseen in any other FPS. Everything is in real time, so if you wish to check your objectives or your map you need to access your note book, but while doing so will be vulnerable to attack. Your torch doesn’t need batteries, but must be charged with a portable hand pump. Ammo is scarce, meaning that wasting it is not clever. You’ll need to search every crack, corner and body to keep yourself supplied as you go along. Overall, Metro 2033 is a dark and gritty FPS with suspenseful horror aspects that will make you want to play the game with the lights on. 8/10 available on Xbox 360

Matter

Big Band is back Electronic pioneer Matthew Herbert comes to matter, where he’ll perform with his Big Band as part of the upcoming European tour in support of One Club

I

n amongst all that activity this year, Herbert’s also finding time to come to matter on Wednesday 9 June for a very special one-off show with The Matthew Herbert Big Band, performing original music from Herbert’s two previous big band albums, and interpretations of his electronic work with a 100-strong team of musicians. Herbert and his band will be joined by Accidental Record’s Eska and the Goldsmiths Vocal Ensemble, who provided vocals and choral backing for Herbert’s band last year at London’s Barbican, to rave reviews. We caught up with Matthew to find out how the big band idea came about, and what people can expect from this spectacular, unique live show: How did the idea for the Big Band performances develop? I’d played in a big band for a few years as a teenager, but the thought had never really crossed my mind to have my own big band. I was working in Paris on a film called Le Defi and the director asked me for some big band music for it. I had two weeks to write three pieces. That kickstarted the whole process. What are your processes for interpreting your existing music for performance with the Big Band? I work with an arranger, Pete Wraight, and between us we develop a new approach to my existing music. There is no point in having a band of 18 amazing players, performing loops or trying to recreate drum machines and synthesizers, so it’s very much drawn from the harmonic material. Finding a balance

2

between the electronic aspect and the live aspect has always been the challenge. Do you perform any original music composed exclusively for the Big Band, or is it solely reinterpretations of your existing work? It is principally original big band music with the occasional re-interpretation of my other work. We don’t play any covers. I have written two big band albums, Goodbye Swingtime and There’s Me And There’s You, so the show tends to draw mainly from those records. Can you tell us about Eska and the Goldsmiths Vocal Ensemble – how did working with them come about? Eska was the main singer on my last album and has become my collaborator in chief. It was her idea initially to bring in the ensemble. I was very keen to work with a choir, but didn’t know how to go about it. She was the dynamo that brought it all together. Simon Deacon at Goldsmiths was very supportive of our approach and we’ve subsequently ended up doing these shows with 100 people on stage. What are your all-time favourite Big Band songs and performers? You can’t beat a track like The Kid From Red Bank by Count Basie for big band balls. But I tend towards records like Miles Ahead with Miles Davis and Gil Evans. That takes the idea of a big band to a new level, drenching it in melancholy and drama.n

The Matthew Herbert Big Band perform live at matter with Eska and the Goldsmiths Vocal Ensemble on 9 June Tickets are £18.50 from www.matterlondon.com
