We want to hear from you! How far have you travelled? Who is your favourite artist of all time? What do you love about The O2? Keep an eye out to see if we mention you... Dear The O2,

Hi Venue,

Hello,

I’m coming to The O2 arena to see The Royal Horse Gala in September. My daughter is dropping me off but I’m worried about the distance I need to walk, as I’m not too good on my feet. Could you help me?

I read about your fantastic Faces gig at the British Music Experience at The O2.

Is it possible to purchase tickets at the box office at The O2? If not, can I buy them online and then pick them up at the box office?

Francis, London Dear Francis, Yes, we can help you. For events in The O2 arena we operate a mobility assistance service. Should you require assistance on arrival, just ring 020 8463 2211 or contact a car parking assistant, from doors opening time (stated on ticket). You will be collected by wheelchair or our new mobility scooter and escorted to your seat in the arena. If you require assistance back to your transport point after the show, please contact the information desks within the arena (on Level 1 or Level 4). Assistance is on a first-come, first-served basis so there is no need to pre-book. At busy times you may, however, have a short wait. You can check out more information on accessibility at The O2, our disabled drop-off point, and distances to and from The O2 as well as to and from main transport points on our access page at http://www.theo2.co.uk/venue/ venue-access.html

How do I get to know about events at the British Music Experience? Would have loved to have gone! William Dear William, You can find out all about the British Music Experience and its many events at www. britishmusicexperience.com. Make sure to check out the ‘What’s On’ section, as there is always something new... Coming up is our first Vocal Masterclass with Mica Paris on 11 November. For a chance to win tickets to these exclusive events, sign up online. We also host one-off events, such as An Evening with Pete Brown and friends on the 23 September.

Thank you for your time, Simon Dear Simon, Yes, you can buy tickets at The O2 box office, subject to their availability. Opening times for The O2 box office are 12* - 7pm on non arena event days, 12* - 9pm on arena event days. *The box office opens earlier on some days when events go on sale. When buying tickets though our ticketing partner Ticketmaster, you can select to pick them up from The O2 box office. Ticket collection from our box office is from 4pm on the day of the show.

The O2 would like to thank the family and friends of Martyn Levett for the generous donation of The Martyn Levett Vehicle, our new mobility scooter, which will help visitors requiring mobility assistance to and from The O2 arena. Martyn was a great fan of The O2 and we were delighted to have been able to assist him and help him enjoy the music he loved. The Martyn Levett Vehicle has been donated in his memory, so that we can continue to help others enjoy their time at our venue.

The rumours were true and the record became one of the most highly anticipated albums of all time, finally released globally to widespread acclaim in 2008. Since then, the constantly evolving tour has circled the globe over the last nine years to more than 3.5 million people at 163 concerts, making this a must-see tour of momentous proportions. NBA STAGES REGULARSEASON GAMES AT The O

2

The National Basketball Association (NBA) will make basketball history when the league holds its first-ever regular-season games at The O2 next year. The New Jersey Nets and Toronto Raptors will square off for back-to-back games on March 4 and 5 as part of NBA Games – London 2011, the equivalent of the Premier League playing in New York! “The staging of our first regular-season games in Europe is a milestone for the NBA and the ongoing development of basketball in the region,” said NBA Commissioner David Stern. “By bringing these two young and exciting teams to London, we are fulfilling our commitment to schedule a regular-season game in the UK prior to the 2012 Olympics - a natural progression given the overwhelming response to the many friendlies we have played to sold-out crowds over the years.” Tickets for NBA Games - London 2011 will go on sale September 1 and will be available for purchase at www.theo2.co.uk

In Our Midst

Like thousands of Gorillaz fans across the UK, we can’t wait until the Escape To Plastic Beach World Tour sails ashore The O2 this November

M

urdoc Niccals, Noodle, 2D and Russell Hobbs have finally escaped the underworld of Kong Studiosthe fictional creative hub of previous Gorillaz multi-platinum chart toppers Demon Days and Gorillaz- to set up camp on a remote island in the Pacific. The Escape to Plastic Beach Tour is your chance to get marooned with the Gorillaz in an epic visual spectacular. The band’s creators, Blur frontman Damon Albarn and award-winning cartoonist Jamie Hewlett have extended their unique animated universe into a live show around the band’s three albums.

2

Performances will be held at The O2 on: 14 & 16 NOV Tickets are available via telephone on 0844 856 0202 or visit www.theo2.co.uk

Escape To Plastic Beach set sail with a sensational headline performance at the Coachella Festival in April, featuring Bobby Womack and De La Soul. The band went on to play in front of more than 400,000 fans headlining Glastonbury (stepping in for U2), Roskilde in Denmark and Benicassim Festival in Spain. Gorillaz also hit the headlines in July when they became the first major Western band to play in Syria, performing in the ancient Citadel in Damascus following a sold-out show at the Byblos Festival in Beirut. “I was very proud of Glastonbury”, says Albarn, who became the first musician to headline the festival two years running with a different act. “I’m really chuffed about it. I learnt something that night. It shows you never stop learning.” Indeed, Albarn says getting back on stage with Blur – something he thought would never happen – has directly influenced Gorillaz. “I’ve found my mojo again, for performing and being a frontman,” he says. “I’d hung up my boots, really. But they’re on again now. I do enjoy it. I’ve stepped up again, really”.

While Gorillaz members Murdoc Niccals and co. have so far been thwarted in their attempts to appear onstage, the Gorillaz live band features Albarn, Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of The Clash, Mike Smith, Cass Browne, Jeff Wootton and Gabriel Manuals Wallace, as well as additional backing singers, brass sections and a full string ensemble. Artists to have performed in previous Gorillaz live shows include the likes of De la Soul, Bobby Womack, Booty Brown, Mos Def and UK Hip Hop stars Kano and Bashy. Gorillaz released their third album Plastic Beach in March of this year, led by first single Stylo, the video for which starred Bruce Willis. The album showcases an all-star line-up of guest appearances such as Snoop Dogg and Lou Reed, and its new electronic direction topped charts around the world with fantastic reviews across the board. The O2 shows promise to be a wild and organic experience, with the Gorillaz holding things down behind featured artists and awe-inspiring animation,

artwork and stage design by Hewlett. To fit the Plastic Beach theme, the Gorillaz website was also dramatically transformed. A virtual tour of the beach was added, including several short films of each band member in the follow-up to the album’s release, to give fans an understanding of the fictional band members’ story before their arrival to the island. The band even launched a 3D action game earlier this year. In Escape to Plastic Beach, Murdoc floats and fights above Plastic Beach HQ on his Doom Glider to foil 2D’s repeated escape attempts, whilst battling ghost pirate ships, and a mix of other hazards and obstacles. A tour of the UK and Ireland was announced in mid-2010. However in early July, the band announced their first ever world tour. The UK dates were promptly rescheduled, and on 2 August frontman Murdoc posted a message to Gorillaz fans. “On behalf of Gorillaz, (which is mainly me), I do apologise about not being able to send the troops out to the Scotland, Newcastle and Milan dates. Really. It’s a shame because I’ve got lots of kids in both those areas, 20 or 30 of which were on the list for each date...I look forward to seeing all you lovelies at the rescheduled dates in which, I can assure you, Gorillaz and our guests will serve you up something blinding, something that’ll keep you warm for a long time to come…” n

THE FACTS • In 2001, their début album Gorillaz sold more than 7 million copies and earned them an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records for the Most Successful Virtual Band. • Second album, Demon Days, was released in 2005 and went five times platinum in the UK, double platinum in the United States and earned five Grammy Award nominations. • They received a Grammy Award in 2006 for the Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for their song Feel Good Inc. • Gorillaz cartoonist Jamie Hewlett was named Designer of The Year in 2006 for his work devising the graphics, website animations and “live” performances by the virtual band. • A behind-the-scenes documentary about the band, Bananaz, filmed from 2000 to 2006, was released on DVD in 2009.

Skin Tight As the all-conquering Scissor Sisters prepare to take The O2 by storm this December, Oliver Balcazar talks to front woman Ana Matronic about buns, beats and why Elton John is always right

I

didn’t believe the Scissor Sisters were ditching their raucously camp image on new album Night Work. That’s like Justin Bieber announcing a foray into gangster rap – impossible and depressing. How could a band so inherently tongue in cheek abandon what thrust them into the spotlight and into the hearts of fans across the globe? Their 2004 selftitled début album spent 113 weeks in the UK chart, four of them at No. 1, and was the best-selling album of that year, with 2.7 million copies sold. But I needn’t have worried as the New York disco rockers’ third album direction had been ordered on high by Elton John himself. “Elton only confirmed what we all knew, which was we weren’t finished yet,” says Ana Matronic, the band’s lone female singer. “It was really good advice and when Elton gives his opinion, he’s usually right. Despite being ready to get back out there and play shows, I knew the material wasn’t all there.” To Ana and the band’s surprise, frontman Jake Shears scrapped the material they’d been working on for months and went in search of inspiration in the hedonistic Berlin club scene. The upbeat and devilishly dirty album, Night Work, was soon born. So wasn’t Ms Matronic (her stage name highlighting a “deep and abiding love of robots”) the least bit annoyed at Jake’s great escape? “To be honest, I was relieved. Jake was working non-stop and after seeing the glazed expression in his eyes every day in the studio, I knew he needed a break from everything.” “Jake realised he didn’t need to prove himself on this album,” says Ana. “His song writing talent was already out there, so he had a new freedom to take risks and show some raw edge. We’re not leaving camp, just toning it down and exploring something darker.” “We definitely wanted to return to creating beats and electronic music. Babydaddy got all this super-cool analogue equipment he was really excited about making sci-fi sounds with. The album is more evolved and mature, and that’s reflected in the artwork.” With a cover to match its salacious lyrics, Night Work smacks a punch with a Robert Mapplethorpe photograph. “It’s a hot piece of ass,” giggles Ana. “You see a lot of artists going: We’re naughty! Sex is bad!’ ‘We say, sex isn’t

wrong, it’s right; we don’t have sin in our world.” Tens of thousands of festival-goers watched on in delight as Kylie Minogue accompanied the band on stage at Glastonbury this year. “Glastonbury was just phenomenal. I’ve been going for the past few years, but this tops all of them. Jake sent Kylie a text to join us on stage and she replied, ‘Hell, yes’ instantly. We were so thrilled and the whole festival was an amazing experience for us.” Now the Scissor Sisters make a triumphant return to The O2, with a sensational new show. “We can’t wait to get back to The O2. When we performed in 2007 it was a huge deal and it’s great to see it’s still a huge deal, and that it’s still up there with the best venues.” n

ou may not know anything about heavy metal and yet a name instantly recognisable with the thrashing sounds of this epic genre is infamous rock concert, Ozzfest. Started in America in the mid-90s when organisers of the Lollapalooza festival refused to let legendary rocker Ozzy Osbourne on the bill, he and wife Sharon’s tour has grown from a modest festival into a phenomenal heavy metal spectacle. With a one-off date at The O2, this will be the first UK Ozzfest show in over five years, and looks to be an unmissable return to form. Prince of Darkness Ozzy returns to the home of metal, accompanied on the main stage by acclaimed rockers Korn, Murderdolls, and Skindred. Outrageous ‘80s-style ‘hair’ band Steel Panther will also make an appearance to wow the audience with their glam rock outfits and wacky hairdos. In addition to the spectacular live music on offer, Ozzfest will fully conquer The O2, creating a unique and sensational ‘Village of The Damned’ fairground with rides, stalls and even tattooists on hand for those with the impulse to get inked. Flying in from Bakerfield, USA, the multimillion selling, Grammy Award-winning Korn will be showcasing material from their eagerly awaited new album, Korn III - Remember Who You Are. “We’re extremely excited to be playing Ozzfest in Europe”, commented Korn guitarist Munky. “Ozzy is an absolute legend, mentor, and dear friend of mine, so it’s always an honour to perform on the same bill as him. We can’t wait!” Ozzfest at The O2 will also give UK fans the chance to give Murderdolls a hearty welcome back from the dead after a six-year absence. Their Ozzfest set will see the horror-rockers airing brand new material for the first time since their 2002 début album, Beyond The Valley of The Murderdolls. Welsh ragga-punks and former Korn touring partners Skindred come armed with a truly unique blend of metal, punk, rap and reggae for their début at The O2. Charismatic frontman Benji Webbe expressed his delight at being part of the most well-established touring package in the world of metal. “It’s been sometime since the Ozzfest has reached these UK shores. Skindred are highly honoured and excited to be joining the legend that is Ozzy Osbourne and taking part in this monstrous event. The Metal public know this one’s gonna rock harder dan all da res...” After the release of his 11th studio album, Scream, in June, Ozzy will lead the homecoming charge with an awesome supporting cast. Fans should gear up for a truly memorable day. “It means a lot to bring Ozzfest back to the UK”, said Ozzy. “This is the first time that we’re bringing Ozzfest indoors. The O2 is the perfect place to hold a festival. Let it rain, let it hail, let it thunder, because we’ll be rocking inside.” n

THE FACTS • The first Ozzfest was not a national tour, but a two-day festival held in Phoenix, Arizona and Devore, California on 25 and 26 October 1996. • The first Ozzfest outside the United States was in the UK in 1998. The festival would eventually return to the UK in 2001 and 2002. • It was during his days in pioneering heavy metal band Black Sabbath that Ozzy Osbourne became know as “The Prince of Darkness” due the band’s dark style of music. • In 2005, Ozzy Osbourne was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame. • Previous performers at Ozzfest concerts include Marilyn Manson, System of a Down, Linkin Park, Slayer, Incubus and Slipknot.

n epic show demands an epic stage. So when the producers of Les Misérables, the world’s longest running musical and an iconic jewel in London’s theatre land crown, wanted the perfect venue to celebrate its phenomenal 25 years on stage, they looked no further than an extravagant spectacle at The O2. Huge demand from thousands of UK fans even meant an extra matinee performance had to be added. The O2 concert will host a theatrical coup by uniting the casts of the original London production, the cast of the acclaimed new 25th anniversary production, and members of the original 1985 cast, in what looks to be two unforgettable shows. Incredibly, over 300 actors and musicians, including Alfie Boe (Jean Valjean), Nick Jonas (Marius), Norm Lewis (Javert), Matt Lucas (Thénardier), Jenny Galloway (Madame Thénardier) and Camilla Kerslake (Cosette), will take to The O2 stage, Heading the cast is Alfie Boe, one of the country’s leading tenors and best-selling recording artists. Alfie shot to fame while starring in Baz Luhrmann’s La Bohème on Broadway, winning a Tony Award for his performance. His other credits include a nomination for a Classical Brit Award for his album Onward and a sell-out production of The Merry Widow at the London Coliseum. Matt Lucas, one of Britain’s most successful comic actors and writers, is also on the star-studded line-up. His TV credits include the multi award-winning Little Britain, and most recently Tim Burton’s film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Nick Jonas is one third of the phenomenally successful pop music artists, the Jonas Brothers. No stranger to Les Miserables, Nick played the part of Gavroche for the final nine months of the show’s original Broadway run. Camilla Kerslake is an English classical crossover singer who became the first signing to Gary Barlow’s new record label. Her debut album shot to number 4 in the Classical Album Charts and has been nominated for a Classical Brit Award. Producer Cameron Mackintosh said, “I am very grateful to Andrew Lloyd Webber that he has kindly

agreed to let his star of Love Never Dies, Ramin Karimloo, take a night off to play Enjolras, a role he had a huge success with several years ago. “The public response to the concert has been so amazing – the 7pm concert has already sold out and to meet demand we have now put on sale a 1.30pm matinee.” Audiences can look forward to the iconic Les Misérables score, featuring West End classics, I Dreamed a Dream, On My Own, Stars and Do You Hear The People Sing?, amongst other awe-inspiring songs. n

THE FACTS • Les Misérables first opened in London at the Barbican Theatre on 8 October 1985, transferring to the Palace Theatre on 4 December 1985, and moving into its current home at the Queen’s Theatre on 3 April 2004, where it continues to play to packed houses. • When Les Misérables celebrated its 21st birthday in October 2006, it became the world’s longest running musical, surpassing the record previously held by Cats in London’s West End. • In January 2010, the West End production broke another another record by celebrating its historic 10,000th performance. • Les Misérables has been seen by over 56 million people worldwide in 42 countries and in 21 languages.

Performances will be held at the o2 on 3 OCT (1.30pm & 7.00 pm) Tickets are available via telephone on 0844 856 0202 or visit www.theo2.co.uk

orse and theatre lovers alike will be thrilled by the unique spectacle of 36 impressive stallions – Lipizzaners from the Lipica Stud; Andalusians from the Spanish Riding school of Samuel Lopez Ortiz at Albecete; Friesians from the Royal Stud of the Netherlands, as well as the highly trainable Arabs performing opulent displays of classical dressage and horsemanship to the rhythmic sounds of flamenco music. The grand showcase will also be enhanced by stunning theatrical lighting to conjure up all the romantic passion of a Spanish carnival. Elegance, harmony and power combine in a demonstration of the partnership and the special bond that exists between horse and rider. Among the performances that the stallions and their immensely talented riders in bright and exotic costumes will present are: a simulated garrocha – the work with the bull that will have spectators on the edge of their

seats; a breathtaking piaffe to music and Pas de Deuhorse ballet at its best; incredible circus acts; group performances such as the majestic Grand Quadrille and the Pièce de résistance, a complete Grand Prix performance on the long rein by Raphael Lopez, Master Horse Trainer of Caballos Espanoles. French horse whisperer, Jean-Marc Imbert, who trains his horses bareback using only his voice, will make a special guest appearance. Promoter Stuart Galbraith, who originally brought The Royal Horse Gala to Britain in 1996, said: “The first time we brought the show here it was a sellout and received rave reviews, and I always said I would bring it back. It’s taken 14 years and I know audiences will feel it’s been worth the wait – it is even more spectacular, more exciting and more entertaining than ever before. Horse lovers will flock to this show but we believe this is a great family event – there is something for everyone.” n

Live and Unsigned Festival 2010 Live and unsigned

A Great Day For Unsigned Acts

B

rimming with the best unsigned music from across the UK, thousands of music fans were rocking out to the freshest music at the Live and Unsigned Festival. The best under-the-radar artists took to the stage at the indigO2 in London on Saturday 10 July for the chance to be crowned the winner of Live and Unsigned 2010, and it was The Lottery Winners from Leigh who eventually took home the title! They battled it out in live auditions and live heats across the country to eventually take away the top spot. Representatives from the music industry were out in force to meet enthusiastic newcomers at the Grand Final of Live and Unsigned, the biggest unsigned music competition in the UK for original artists. Over 10,000 acts entered the competition this year, and the Grand Final saw the cream of the UK’s unsigned talent showcase their music in front of thousands of audience members and the judging panel, which included Slade’s legendary frontman Noddy Holder, Radio 1’s Annie Nightingale, Kerrang’s Alex Baker and RnB star Shola Ama.

2

The Festival played host to an eclectic mix of artists, with four genre categories performing throughout the day including Rock, Indie, Alternative and Pop/Acoustic/ Urban. Category winners included rock band Underline The Sky (www.myspace.com/underlinethesky) who won Road To V last year, acoustic act Sam Garrett, and alternative group We Beat The System. But the judges, alongside an energised audience, voted Indie band The Lottery Winners as the overall winner. Title sponsors Marshall (www.marshallamps.com) supported unsigned acts this year by awarding bands with equipment and prizes throughout the competition. Development opportunities were also awarded to acts by ICMP (www.icmp.co.uk) and there were festival slots up for grabs too. The winners’ package includes a management and recording contract, development of a clothing brand with Extreme Clothing, publicity package and UK tour. Live and Unsigned has cemented its place on the UK music scene as the largest unsigned music competition for under-the-radar, original artists. The competition’s popularity comes from its reputation for encouraging originality, and it’s open to all unsigned acts regardless of genre, so it’s got something for everyone! Live and Unsigned 2011 auditions begin again in January 2011 and will be travelling across the UK. For more information on Live and Unsigned, go to www.liveandunsigned.uk.com.

After conquering Live and Unsigned 2010, we talk to The Lottery Winners’ front man Thom to discover their plans for future world domination How are you feeling since your Live & Unsigned win? Absolutely phenomenal. I'm usually quite an articulate guy, but I have no words to express my feelings about our win. It just crept up from nowhere, grabbed us by the cheeks and whisked us away to a wonderful place full of interviews, recordings and photographs. A place we'd all dreamt of, but never actually been. Did you ever think you'd win the competition? We never in a million years thought we could win. We were just treating the whole experience as a chance to meet other bands, play in front of some new faces and hopefully gain some exposure. Have you received much industry interest since winning the competition? A lot more people are certainly more aware of us now. I'm not allowed to tell you exactly who we've been in talks with, but there’s been some interesting labels getting in touch. We're trying to keep our feet on the ground and take things one step at a time. We don't plan on being unsigned for long. We're just hoping to be the biggest band in the world!

Who would you love to have the opportunity to play alongside in the music business? Morissey is our absolute idol, but he would hate us as we're far too happy. We just want to tour with some cool bands; we like to make lots of friends. We're all really feeling Bombay Bicycle Club at the moment; we've seen them a few times and the lead singer has this incredible, unique voice. What have you got planned for the future? We're currently looking for the right person to record our début single, Paper Plate Faces. Then that will be released and we'll tour it. Hopefully, everyone will buy it, and we'll record an album, that hopefully everyone will also buy. We'll go on to write a Christmas song, get it to number one, then all quit music and buy planes. You know, the usual! n To hear some tracks by The Live and Unsigned Winners, log on to www.myspace.com/thelotterywinnersmusic

Underline The Sky tell us about winning the Rock category at Live and Unsigned How do you feel about winning the Rock category of Live and Unsigned 2010? We were so excited it’s hard to put it into words. Being able to say we had won the Rock Category of Live and Unsigned 2010 was amazing enough, but the prizes that came with it were insane! We’re now part of the Rockstar Energy UK roster and we’re going to be heading out to India in October this year to play as part of ‘Independence Rock’ - Asia’s biggest rock festival. A prize like that is mind blowing, we might never have had the chance to play that festival if we hadn’t have entered Live and Unsigned. What was it like performing at indigO2? Loud! It was amazing. The whole day was incredible and it was weird to walk around The O2 knowing that a lot of pop superstars had recently performed there. The sound was incredible in there and hopefully it won’t be long before we play there again! What’s life been like since the Festival? It’s an incredibly busy, but incredibly exciting time for us. I’ve barely slept since the festival because there has been so much going on!

You won Road To V last year, and now Live and Unsigned, it must be an exciting time for you? It’s hard to put into words. The huge support we’ve had from our friends, family and fans over the last two years has been overwhelming and we’ll never be able to thank them enough. I hope they know how much we appreciate every single bit of support they give us.

Rock Winners of Live Underline The Sky, the 0 201 d igne and Uns

What’s next for you as a band? Lots of things! Writing, recording, touring, India and some things we can’t mention yet. There’s all sorts going on behind the scenes at the moment. Our tour in September is going to be a massive highlight of this year too - it’ll be our first proper UK tour. So we’re incredibly excited about that.

What’s the best thing about being in Underline The Sky? Everything. The time we spend together as a band is just amazing. There’s something truly special about being in a band and if you can just about hold a rhythm or a tune on any instrument I would recommend joining one - you won’t regret it.

Free master classes at the British Music Experience inspire the next generation of musical icons

I

t’s been a busy few months at the British Music Experience, the definitive home of British music, based at the heart of The O2. Franz Ferdinand frontman and Mercury Music prize winner, Alex Kapranos, gave schoolchildren a lecture on songwriting in July, giving tips on how he wrote charttoppers like Take Me Out and Walk Away. Speaking about his own songwriting experiences with band mate Nick McCarthy, Kapranos said, “Take Me Out was written with Nick, with both of us sitting in a room chopping things about and saying things like, ‘I saw this on TV the other night, let’s try and get it in the lyrics!’ But Walk Away was written in a much more traditional way – I was in a dressing room in Hamburg and I’d just split up with my girlfriend and it came out naturally.” Kapranos also performed for children from Plumstead Manor and Eltham Green schools to kickstart the British Music Experience’s new partnership with The Co-operative. The UK has long been a world leader on the rock and pop stage, providing a constant flow of talented musicians. As such the British Music Experience is an ideal starting point for The Co-operative’s new Inspiring Young People campaign. The Co-operative has committed to inspiring and educating young people across the

country, and has pledged to give away 15,000 free tickets to schoolchildren, encouraging young people to start writing , mber, 9 Septe sterclass music and creating the ucer Ma d ro P , it ts e rb ck O ti superstars of tomorrow. William ister for free Reg Kapranos was delighted mber, 23 Septe Pete Brown to be involved. “I enjoyed h it w £10 ing An Even s, tickets from meeting the kids and talking about my d n e ri F d an rclass experiences as a musician. It’s good to take a bit l Maste er, Voca ris, b m e v o a aP 11 N of the mystery out of songwriting, while still enjoying with Mic ee tickets r for fr its magic. It’s been rewarding to give a little back of Registe what I’ve learnt myself.” From an indie rock star to a maverick producer, on 9 September, the British Music Experience welcomes the legendary William Orbit for an unmissable master class. With credits ranging from Malcolm McLaren to Madonna, along with Blur, Beth Orton, Depeche Mode, For more Kraftwerk and U2, Orbit has helped shape the sonic information landscape of these world-renowned artists. backstage AT The o2

Stars in His Eyes Now in its 17th year, Thank You For The Music, is back at indigO2 on 24 September. We talk to Martin Spooner who performs both as Bjorn in ABBA and Robin Gibb from The Bee Gees in this iconic show How long have you been involved with Thank You For The Music? I’ve been with the show since its début 17 years ago. I stared as a sound technician until the guitarist who played Bjorn was ill one night. I’ve been a guitarist all my life and knew the songs after working on the sound. I offered to step in and have been in the cast ever since.

Why do you think the show has been so successful for so many years? Well it’s a fun, entertaining show but the timeless songs keeps bringing the fans back. People will always love the ABBA and Bee Gees classics. Few bands can claim to have made as big an impact on British pop music history. We have young ABBA fans coming in, parties all dressed up in incredible costumes as well as those die hard fans who have seen the show over twenty-five times!

Who do you prefer performing as, Bjorn from ABBA or Robin Gibb from The Bee Gees? They’re both quite different musicians. The Bee Gees section was added a few years into the ABBA shows to add a broader 70s sound and encourage people who wouldn’t normally go and see just an ABBA or Bee Gees tribute to enjoy both. As Bjorn I play the guitar which I love, but as Robin I’m singing and dancing which is I also a lot of fun. I like them equally since they’re so varied.

Where have you toured Thank You For The Music? ABBA was a truly global phenomenon so in seventeen years we’ve been pretty much everywhere. We go to Brazil six times a year and play in front of crowds of 2,500 to 3,000 each time. We were asked to perform on a morning show there that broadcasts to the whole country. The majority of the 192 million Brazilians it broadcast to are all big ABBA fans so it turned out to be a hell of a lot of exposure. The scale of the country takes some getting used to, instead of driving from show to show you have to fly.

What’s your favourite ABBA and Bee Gees song to perform? My personal ABBA favourite is Angel Eyes, because I’m playing a gorgeous guitar riff in it. But we rarely perform that one in the UK. The Danish fans really love that one. It was surprising to discover how certain songs only resonate with specific audiences. In the UK, we play all the big hits like Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen and Waterloo, but in Brazil, Waterloo isn’t popular at all so we finish with The Winner Takes It All, and they go crazy for it.

Do you enjoy performing at indigO2? It’s a really impressive venue. As a sound technician I really appreciate the excellent equipment and world-class sound quality. We’ve played gigs over the years where the sound or lighting has been less than perfect, but the indigO2 is such a friendly and really enjoyable venue to play. The audience should look forward to lots of singing and dancing to some legendary pop songs. n

THE Performance will be held at indigO2 on: 24 SEPT Tickets are available via telephone on 0844 844 0002 or visit www.theo2.co.uk/indigo2

This month we are listening to... Mark Ronson Record Collection Label: Columbia Release Date: 27 Sept

This is Mark Ronson’s third album and an international collective of sorts, since over 30 musicians and vocalists have joined in to co-write, play and lend their voices, perhaps surpassing the wonder of his acclaimed, mega-hit 2007 release, Version. This album, amazingly, also marks Ronson’s first outing as a vocalist. Record Collection’s zany first single (and awesome video), Bang Bang Bang, was a deviation from the retro-soul sound that made him (and Amy Winehouse) famous. Featuring an all-star cast both behind and in front of the scenes, the perky 60’s flavour of The Bike Song is written by Dave McCabe of the Zutons, who also wrote Valerie, a smash hit for Ronson and Winehouse after they covered it in 2007. Lose It (In The End), however, is a different kind of animal. Over a funky beat we hear a variety of whistles and flutes, while Ghostface kicks his typical dense slang on top.

A Thousand Suns

Hands All Over

For his début solo project, Flamingo, Brandon Flower’s recruited not one, not two, but three of music’s highest-profile producers- Stuart Price, Daniel Lanois and Brendan O’ Brien - to help him capture his vision. Lead single Crossfire suggests that vision is less synthed-up than The Killers last studio album Day & Age. But the stirring Jilted Lovers & Broken Hearts revisits the rousing, stadium-ready anthems which the Killers have become known for.

Super-producer Rick Rubin and Linkin Park frontman Mike Shinoda teamed up again to co-produce A Thousand Suns after working together on the band’s last album, 2007’s Minutes to Midnight. The band launched a contest through MySpace called Linkin Park, Featuring You, letting fans download music stems from first single The Catalyst to remix and/or write their own part for the song on any instrument. Winner NoBraiN’s remix features as an additional track on the album.

Maroon 5 began writing songs for their third album after winding down from a world tour in support of 2007’s It Won’t Be Soon Before Long. The band couldn’t resist an offer to work with studio heavyweight Robert “Mutt” Lange, who has cut platinum records with AC/DC, Def Leppard and Foreigner, and whose famous perfectionism pairs well with Maroon 5’s own production style. This features emotionally charged lyrics matched with Maroon 5’s trademark sleek, danceable pop production.

S E M A G zone Save Pacific City from mutants or discover the origins of Transformers this month, as Ryan Cope tries out the latest games

Crackdown 2 Pacific City is in turmoil. A terrorist cell creating chaos during the day and a mutant outbreak at night. There’s only one force with the skills and determination to deal with it: the Agency. Crackdown 2 is very much like its predecessor, a free roam sandbox where you can go crazy with your super engineered abilities as an agent. It’s your job to bring peace back to Pacific City. While that just about sums up the story (since there is very little else in that department), Crackdown 2 is more about the gameplay and the addictive orb collecting. There are several different types of orbs throughout the game including agility, guns

and strength. Each are earned by doing different things, i.e., shooting people gives you gun orbs. The more orbs you earn, the stronger you get and the more weapons and abilities become available to you. The gameplay is fun and addictive, leaving you feeling like an unstoppable superpower as you stomp down on crime and disorder. While the graphics aren’t the best, they are stylistic and cartoonish, creating a visually pleasing design. With four player co-op and plenty of online play, Crackdown 2 supplies hours of havoc inducing entertainment. 8/10 Available on Xbox 360

Transformers: War For Cybertron Autobots, roll out! You guessed it, the Transformers are back, but this time they haven’t even crashed on earth yet. Set before the original cartoons, War for Cybertron is Hasbro’s official prequel to the series. If you ever wondered exactly how Cybertron was destroyed, or how Optimus became a Prime and the leader of the Autobots, then this game is for you. Of course, if you’re not just interested in the story and want an action-packed thirdperson shooter with a robotic shape-shifting twist, then WFC is for you. The character and level designs are beautiful, but are let down at times when the graphics decide to de-pixel randomly. Don’t let this sway you though, as the story is brilliant and the gameplay is exciting, explosive and satisfying – with a diverse range of shooting, racing and flying. The sound effects feel right at home and voice acting is spot on, with Peter Cullen reprising his role as Optimus Prime.

There is also some interesting online play that allows players to customise their own transformers, choosing from four different classes before clashing metal on metal in various game modes. Overall, War for Cybertron feels organic and true to the series, while also bringing in something new. 8/10 Available on PC, Nintendo DS, Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
