SARAH COLLINSON takes a look at legendary band
Bon Jovi as they prepare for an epic two-year tour across the USA and Europe
I
f you asked a roomful of people to name the top ten rock acts of the last 25 years, one name would probably appear on all of the lists. One act has triumphed in the album stakes again and again, storming into the charts in the 80s, 90s and noughties with 11 studio albums, two compilations and one live album, with worldwide sales topping 120 million. Far from stagnating after the 80s glory days (Motley Crew and Poison anyone?)
this act has gone from strength to strength, trying out styles from electro to country while proving they can easily return to full-on anthem-rock form and producing classics that will be remembered for years to come. This act is, of course, Bon Jovi. Named after their illustrious lead singer (following in the footsteps of Van Halen who also used their star’s name), Bon Jovi stormed into public consciousness in 1986 with the release of their anthem-filled rock

album Slippery When Wet, which featured tracks like Living on a Prayer and You Give Love a Bad Name that quickly became renowned classics. It still holds the record in the US for the hard rock album longest at number 1 and by 2009 it had become one of the biggest selling albums of all time (go on, admit it – it’s in your CD collection, isn’t it?). They continued to produce successful albums through the 80s and 90s with New Jersey still holding the record for most Top 10 singles from a rock album. They leapt feet first into the new Millenium with Crush – an album with a modern rock feel that brought a new generation of fans into the Bon Jovi camp – and expanded their musical boundaries with the electronic Bounce (2002) and country-and-western inspired Lost Highway (2007). In 2009 they have firmly re-asserted their position as kings of stadium rock with The Circle – a return to their rock roots that Jon Bon Jovi himself has called “a turn-the-guitars-back-up record”. The name of the album itself seems to recognise the band’s journey over the past decade and their return to the original rock identity that we know and love. To celebrate this return to classic rock form Bon Jovi are launching a two-year stadium tour across the US and Europe which includes a summer residency at The O2 – the first series of its kind since the planned Michael Jackson dates last year. As the first act ever to play live at the venue, Bon Jovi are no strangers to The O2 and it’s a residency that’s caused waves of excitement in British fans. Tickets sold out almost immediately for the initial dates and, when more nights were added, places sold at a rate of 18 per second with 23,000 going in the first two hours. The gigs promise to be some of the biggest dates in the British music calendar next year as the band return to what they do best – playing live to thousands
of fans. Bon Jovi have always been renowned for their massive tours and have been lauded again and again for producing some of the consistently best stadium shows in music history. Their first major set of dates came after the release of Slippery When Wet when they played 130 venues back to back in the aptly named Tour Without End.
BON JOVI: THE FACTS •
Over the past 26 years Bon Jovi have played over 2,600 live dates in over 50 countries for more than 34 million fans
•
Their first number one single was You give Love a Bad Name, not Living on a Prayer as most people think
•
On 12 December 2009, Bon Jovi were ranked #9 on US Billboard’s top 25 touring artists of the decade after grossing (US)$419,481,741 from 249 shows, of which 244 were sellouts
•
In 2001 the band planned to take a break from touring but post-9/11 got involved in numerous concerts to raise money for victim’s families
•
On the release of Crush: “We’ve been away five years and all they could come up with is boy bands? Well, this is a man band.” – Jon Bon Jovi (2000)

including a sellout gig at the Giant’s Stadium in their home territory in New Jersey. They are also no strangers to the small stage. Jon Bon Jovi started his music career at the age of 16 with keyboardist David Bryan in 12-piece cover band Atlantic City Expressway. They toured the small club scene of New Jersey, even though they were both minors and technically not even allowed in the venues. The band as we know it today returned to these smalltown roots after the release of Keep the Faith, playing a set of intimate dates before another worldwide tour. More stadium globetrotting followed the release of These Days and Crush with the band playing to more than 1 million fans in fewer than 30 shows in the summer of 2000. Their two dates at the New Jersey Giants stadium even broke the record for VH1 ratings. Apart from record-breaking numbers, ridiculous stamina and huge sound systems (Rolling Stone refers
to the band as “arena shakers”), the band have also had their share of tour intrigue, making the history of Bon Jovi live even more interesting. They were the first Western rock band officially sanctioned to perform in Russia after the Cold War and the equipment for their first set of live dates in India had to be carried by elephants, as it was the only form of transport that could cope with the weight. They also arrived to play in Bogota, Columbia the day
the VicePresident’s son was assassinated and the city was under martial law. David Bryan claimed in a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon that the prospect of playing rousing anthems to 68,000 fans in such a precarious political situation was one of the most nerve-wracking experiences the band has had... but true to form, they went ahead anyway. You might think that after nearly three decades of constant touring the band might prefer some down time, but Jon recently claimed:“I can’t believe I’m even saying this, but I can’t wait to go on the road again”. And if you’re one of the thousands who have managed to get a precious ticket to see the rockers back to their original form, I’m sure you’d second that.
BON JOVI
They carried on after the release of New Jersey, playing a staggering 232 shows in 22 countries and racking up 16 months of continuous concerts

hen you hear a song by Leona Lewis, you stop what you’re doing and listen. With a unique emotional sensitivity and incredible vocal range, she stands out as an artist who can express a lyric so intimately that it resonates with people across the world. Phenomenal demand from Leona’s fans meant that extra dates had to be added for her long-awaited, first- ever UK tour. Britain’s most successful female musical export will perform hits from her Grammynominated 2007 début Spirit, including the colossal Bleeding Love, Better In Time and Run, as well as tracks from acclaimed new album Echo. “I can’t wait to get out on tour and see everyone, I’m really looking forward to putting on a great show. I had such a fun night at my recent show at the Hackney Empire and it’s given me a real taste for it,” says the 24-year-old singing sensation, who received rave reviews for her homecoming performance, giving fans an exclusive preview of what’s in store for her summer tour. The O2 will host Leona’s only London dates and promises to be an immense visual spectacle; featuring state-of-the-art effects, new choreography and a live band. “Over the last few years I’ve had some amazing experiences and sung in some really interesting places but it’s going to be great to be able to perform all my own material on my very own tour. It’s a dream come true.”
Dreams coming true have become a recurrent theme in Leona’s career. Since her X Factor victory in 2006, Leona’s profound talent and determination have kept her star rising when so many others have burnt out. Spirit became Britain’s fastest selling début album and was an international mega-hit, selling over 6 million copies. Her latest offering Echo sees Leona teaming up with some of the hottest singers and producers including Ne-Yo, Ryan Tedder, Max Martin and Justin Timberlake, as well as new collaborators Xenomania and Julian Bennetta. Direct, incisive song titles like Brave and Broken cut to the chase as she lays her emotions bare to timeless yet contemporary melodies. With Leona co-writing several tracks on the album, Echo is more quintessentially her than ever before.“I’m actually more confident with this album than the last. I’ve taken more control this time and I feel more at ease with everything. To me, it’s all about great songs and I hope the songs move people as much as they move me.” Leona is no stranger to epic stages, having performed at the Beijing Olympics (with Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page), Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday party in London’s Hyde Park and the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards (with Lil Wayne and T-Pain). Now, The O2 will showcase Leona’s incredible talent in a spectacle well and truly her own.

LADY GAGA
Dirty Pop Lady Gaga tore up the pop rulebook in 2009. Now the avant-garde performance artist prepares to wow The O2 with her spectacular Monster Ball Tour.
O
nce in a while an artist breaks through who can challenge convention and still manage to entertain the masses. Lady Gaga is one such artist. Bold and irreverent, fearless yet feminine, her incredibly unique style rocked the world in 2009 and now looks set to electrify The O2 in February. “I wanted to really put together a show that would be the most beautiful, expensivelooking, delicious show, but that my fans wouldn’t have to pay a ton of money to come see,” says the 23-year-old pop sensation. The Monster Ball Tour has been described as the “first ever” pop-electro opera and is “very, very forward, very, very innovative,” Lady Gaga insists. The aesthetic, she explains, has been captured in the abstract design of the show, produced by her inner circle of creative friends, known as the Haus of Gaga. “The theatrics and story elements are in the style of an opera. Imagine if you could take the sets of an opera, which are very grand and very beautiful, and put them through a pop-electro lens,” she says. The extravagant visual spectacle sees Lady Gaga perform hits from 4 million selling début album The Fame, including Just Dance, Poker Face, Paparazzi and LoveGame, alongside eight new tracks from revamped album The Fame Monster. While she may seem all about a visual experience, Lady Gaga has substance as well as style. Learning piano by ear at the age of four, she wrote her first piano ballad at 13 and began singing at open mic nights at 14. She penned tracks for Britney Spears and the Pussycat Dolls before she was 20 and paid her artistic dues performing in the underground burlesque clubs of down town New York. Working on her craft with a determination and creative vision unheard of in our era of disposable pop and vapid
fame, she signed a joint deal with Interscope and Akon’s record label, Kon Live in 2007. “When I came out it was, ‘Oh, she’s attentionseeking!’ Or, ‘She’s trying too hard’, or ‘She wants to be noticed’, whereas the very nature of performance art is that it wants to be noticed, so everyone’s kind of missing the point. But now I actually feel that I’m in a space where they’re not missing the point, because I’ve never let up and I’ve never sold out. There is never a moment that you see me that I’m not working towards something creatively. For me, it’s very simple: I’m not going to allow you to portray me in a way that is your idea of what you think I am. I know who I am and — praise the Lord! — I’m a real artist. Why is this a bad thing? But now I have a lot of fans and they’re spreading the book of Gaga around the world.” Lady Gaga wrote The Fame when she was an unknown living in New York, and insists the concept of the album is not a superficial, vain exercise, but rather a celebration of the life-affirming creative potential of fame, glamour and living life to the full. “Fame today, the stereotypical idea that we have about fame, is that cameras follow you everywhere and everybody is talking about you and you can’t go anywhere. The ‘it’ girl. [With] The Fame, I’m talking about the inner sense of confidence.” Her first single, Just Dance, enthused dance floors everywhere and received a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording. She cites fashion and music icons such as David Bowie, Grace Jones and Donatella Versace as her inspirations. “I look at those artists as icons in art. It’s not just about the music. It’s about the performance, the attitude, the look; it’s everything. And that is where I live as an artist and that is what I want to accomplish.”
LADY GAGA
LADY GAGA: FACT BOX •
Never shy to express herself in strange materials, Lady Gaga’s attention-grabbing fashions have included fishnet stockings, plastic bubbles, glittery masks and a zipper over her eye. In July, the eclectic star made headlines when she appeared on a German TV talk show in a jacket made of Kermit the Frog puppets. The Monster Ball Tour will showcase her now infamous fashion with fans eagerly awaiting an unforgettably provocative spectacle. “The fashion, certainly, is going to be another exploration and

another level,” she says. “The theme of monsters is certainly going to be an influence, as well as the theme of evolution and change. It’s going to be a truly artistic experience that is going to take the form of the greatest post-apocalyptic house party that you’ve ever been to.” Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball is guaranteed to dazzle The O2, giving audiences a chance to see a truly innovative artist who is single-handedly redefining the pop world.

Classical starlet Katherine Jenkins announces UK arena tour for 2010
K
nown affectionately as the modern “Forces Sweetheart” and with the voice of an angel, Welsh-born mezzo soprano Katherine Jenkins is one of classical music’s most successful stories. Growing up in Neath, Katherine was a gifted choir girl who won a scholarship to London’s Royal Academy of Music to study opera, before being picked up by Universal at the age of 23 and signed to a massive six-album deal. The fastest-selling opera singer since Maria Callas, her first album Premiere sold over 100,000 copies, followed by her second album titled Second Nature which, selling more than 350,000 copies, was largely inspired by requests from her fans and won her a Classical Brit Award. Her third album Living a Dream held the number one position for nearly a year and reached number four in the pop album charts. Going from strength to strength, Katherine’s fourth album Serenade reached number five in the mainstream charts selling more than 50,000 copies in its first week, which set a record in the classicalpop crossover genre. By this time a very rare event had occurred: the top four albums on HMV’s classical charts were by Katherine Jenkins. In 2007, Katherine’s fifth album, Rejoice, was released including songs written for her by Take That’s
Gary Barlow and she released Sacred Arias in 2008. After a move to Warner Bros Records last year, Katherine released her latest record titled Believe. The new record sees Katherine take a new direction with a much bolder sound, working with renowned producer David Foster (who is responsible for helping the likes of Celine Dion, Michael Bublé, Whitney Houston and Barbra Streisand to international fame). “When the opportunity to work with David came up, for me it was a dream come true,” says Katherine. “I’ve always loved his style, what he brings to the music, and it’s been absolutely amazing working with him. This is the album I have always wanted to make.” Katherine has achieved a huge amount in her six-year career so far; whether she’s taking to the stage with Darcey Bussell, performing Edith Piaf’s La Vie En Rose in their acclaimed production Viva La Diva, or giving Leonard Cohen’s famous Hallelujah a classical modern twist, Katherine is one the of most dynamic performers and forward-thinking artists of her generation. A long way on from her first album in 2003, Katherine has recently announced a major 11-date UK arena tour for 2010. The O2 will be her only London show on 13 March and offers the many thousands of Katherine Jenkins fans a chance to see her live at this incredible venue. This is certainly a must for all classical and classical-pop fans.

T
his year, two of the world’s greatest guitar musicians will take to the stage together for the first time in the UK. Eric Clapton (ranked Number Four on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time) and Jeff Beck (ranked Number 14) will join forces on 13 and 14 February to deliver a spectacular concert at The O2. Following a stunning collaboration in Tokyo last February, Clapton and Beck announced an eagerly anticipated collaboration at The O2. In what will be one of the must-see shows of this decade, Clapton and Beck will perform both together and apart. With something of a shared heritage, both stars have roots in the British band Yardbirds (the group that can also boast Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page in its alumni). Clapton left the Yardbirds after the release of their hit For Your Love in 1965, chiefly because he did not agree with the band’s change in genre from the blues to more mainstream pop. Ironically, Beck was to replace Clapton, but was later fired from the band in 1968 before they finally disbanded. After leaving the Yardbirds, Clapton rose from strength to strength as a member of Cream, Blind Faith, and Derek & The Dominoes before enjoying a very successful solo career. Beck meanwhile fronted the Jeff Beck Group and also enjoyed a popular solo career. With countless awards and smash hit songs between them, they have an impressive record; Beck has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice and Clapton is the only artist to be inducted three times. Now (more than 40 years after the original Yardbirds broke up), the pair will finally share the stage again at The O2. Of course, the duo have shared the stage at various festivals and benefits previously, but the 2009 Japan shows at the Saitama Super Arena was the first time they had shared the bill at a major arena. Both Clapton and Beck told the media that they had a truly memorable and fantastic time on stage together, and the press gave rave reviews. “Eric and I played together in Japan [last year] and had a blast,” said Beck. “Since then we have been

We had such a fun time in Japan that it seemed natural to play together again.”

DANCE In the wake of yet another successful series of Strictly Dancing, the celebrity Come Dancing contestants and professional dancers take to the stage in a tour of dazzling live shows, says CLAIRE SAUNDERS
A
fter an exciting few months of tough competition, harsh criticism and sparkling lycra costumes, almost 12 million viewers tuned in to BBC1 just before Christmas to find out which celebrity would walk away as the Strictly Come Dancing champion 2009. As you may remember, Chris Hollins (BBC sports reporter/presenter on BBC Breakfast) won the title in a close battle, with Ricky Whittle (Hollyoaks actor, ‘Calvin’) as runner-up. Over the two shows performed in the final week, Chris danced the Foxtrot, Lindy Hop, Charleston and Showdance, having previously wowed the audience with a wide range of Ballroom and Latin American routines. “I’d love to thank all our family and friends,
our loved ones,” said Chris, “Because without you we wouldn’t have been able to do half the training.” For all those missing the glamour and glitter of Saturday nights on BBC1 and who just cannot wait until the new series of Strictly in September, you can get an early Ballroom fix as the Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour will be arriving at The O2 this month – EastEnders star Ricky Groves and BBC Breakfast’s Chris Hollins complete the celebrity line-up for the 2010 dance spectacular. Popular contestants Ricky and Chris will join fellow dancing celebrities from the 2009 series including Britain’s sweetheart Ali Bastian, actress Natalie Cassidy, and Zoe Lucker, alongside previously announced stars Kelly Brook, Austin Healey and Mark

These eight celebrities will be joined by professional dancers Darren Bennett, Matthew Cutler, Brian Fortuna, James Jordan, Ola Jordan, Lilia Kopylova, Natalie Lowe, Kristina Rihanoff, Aliona Vilani and Ian Waite to create a dazzling cast for a truly spectacular show. In a thrilling one-night competition, the original line-up of judges (including Len Goodman, Bruno Tolioni, Arlene Philips and Craig Revel-Horwood) will be on hand with comments, criticism and scores for the celebrity couples, but it is arena audiences who have the final say each night. Set to be the biggest and best live tour to date, Strictly Come Dancing Live is an unmissable night for everyone burning up with dance fever!
THE FOXTROT was premiered in 1914, quickly catching the eye of the talented husband and wife duo Vernon and Irene Castle, who lent the dance its signature grace and style. The Castles introduced the ‘Bunny Hug’ in a magazine article but later changed the name to Foxtrot. THE CHARLESTON is a dance named for the city of Charleston, South Carolina. The rhythm was popularized in mainstream dance music in the United States by a 1923 tune called The Charleston by composer/pianist James P. Johnson which originated in the Broadway show Runnin’ Wild and became one of the most popular hits of the decade THE LINDYHOP is
based on the popular Charleston and named for Charles Lindbergh’s Atlantic crossing in 1927. It evolved in New York City in the 1920s and ‘30s and originally evolved with the jazz music of that time. Lindy was a fusion of many dances that preceded it or were popular during its development but is mainly based on jazz, tap, breakaway and Charleston. It is frequently described as a jazz dance and is a member of the swing dance family

Carmen
The O2 GETS ITS FIRST TASTE OF OPERA
T
he story of Carmen is set in Seville, in 1830 and tells the story of the eponymous gypsy girl – beautiful, but with a fiery temper. Free with her attention and affection, she woos the corporal Don José, an inexperienced soldier. Their relationship leads to his rejection of his former love, mutiny against his commander and joining a band of smugglers. His jealousy, when Carmen finally leaves him in favour of Escamillo the bullfighter, causes Don José to murder her. An opéra comique (a French genre of opera including spoken dialogue) Carmen was created by Georges Bizet, and based on the novella of the same name, by Prosper Mérimée. Now widely considered the world’s most popular opera, Carmen premiered in Paris in 1875 but was promptly denounced by the majority of critics and almost withdrawn from the Opéra Comique theatre. Sadly, Bizet died aged just 37 in the same year, never knowing how popular and loved Carmen would eventually become. The most performed and most popular opera in the world, Carmen is this year coming to the world’s most popular music venue. The first full opera to be performed in The O2, Carmen seems a fitting choice for the inauguration of opera on this spectacular stage. With just three performances scheduled for May 2010, the production is set to wow opera lovers from all around the UK. Following highly successful classical shows from Carmina Burana and Andrea Bocelli, The O2 has already proved itself as an outstanding classical and operatic venue, and fans can look forward to an outstanding performance. Directed by David Freeman (founder of The Opera Factory and whose previous credits include Madam Butterfly, Tosca and Carmen at the Royal Albert Hall), his version of Bizet’s epic opera arrives at The O2 on a grand scale. From the opening moments to the final tragic notes, this breathtaking “in-the-round” show
2
The world’s most popular opera comes to the world’s most popular music venue is a powerful rendition of the memorable story of lust, superstition and murder with a dramatic and fatal ending. Accompanied by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (conducted by Gareth Hancock), the world-class company of over 150 singers, musicians and artists (including dancers, acrobats and fire-eaters) come together to present a truly unforgettable production, staged on an epic scale. Cristina Nassif and Louise Poole share the role of Carmen and are supported by John Hudson and Philip O’Brien sharing the role of Don José. Sung in English, Bizet’s famous score contains some of the opera world’s finest arias and bestloved music; the rousing Song of the Toreador, the beguiling Seguidilla, the tantalising Habanera and the enchanting Flower Song. “The O2 is a wonderful venue to stage such a dramatic and powerful opera”, says Raymond Gubbay (impresario and classical music promoter). “We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to transform this amazing space and produce the first opera there.”n
Performances will be held at The O2 on 21–23 May Tickets are available via telephone on 0844 856 0202 or visit www.theo2.co.uk

We catch up with England netball player, Eboni Beckford Chambers, ahead of the Co-operative Netball International Series at The O2. It must be a dream come true to play for your country how does it feel when you pull on your England shirt? It definitely is a dream come true. I remember going to watch England v Australia at Wembley in 2003, and I was absolutely amazed by the athleticism of the players, and the skill and pace of the game. It was at that moment that I decided I wanted to play for England. Luckily my dream came true in 2005 when I was selected for the England U17 squad, and I have gradually worked my way through the England development programme to earn myself a place in the senior squad. It has been a long journey that has required much dedication, commitment and sacrifice. However, the butterflies I get and the rush of excitement, every time I put on my England kit, makes it all worth it. I am immensely proud and honoured to be able to don England’s national colours.
How much are you looking forward to the current test and especially playing at The O2? I am really looking forward to the test match against Australia. Australia are currently ranked number one in the world and England are currently ranked third, with little separating the two teams. Therefore the match is guaranteed to be exhilarating to watch, as two different styles of netball compete not only for the Co-operative International Test Series trophy, but for pride. It will be my second time playing at The O2, and I’m even more excited this time than the last. The O2 is such an iconic venue, and the atmosphere created by England supporters and supporters of netball in general is always electric. The Australians are always tough opponents in any sport. What are you expecting from this match and how would you describe the rivalry? As this is the third test match of the series, either nation may be playing to secure victory after winning one of the previous test matches or playing for pride, in order to ensure the test series was not a total whitewash. Therefore I expect the match to be physically demanding and mentally challenging with
episodes of sheer brilliance. Having lost narrowly to Australia in October 2009, the England team will be looking to revenge the loss. Whilst the atmosphere between the two teams is friendly off the court (many of the Australian players are some of England player’s counterparts in the ANZ league), when England step onto the court at The O2, it will mean nothing but business. Who are the players to watch for both Australia and England? The England Netball team boasts a hoard of talented players, who create a mixture of youth vs experience. Jo Harten who plays GS is definitely one to watch. Her high percentage shooting accuracy, agile footwork and court dominance make her a deadly weapon in England’s arsenal. Again in the Australian shooting circle, Sharelle McMahon is also definitely one to watch. Often regarded as one of the world’s best shooters, she will definitely be trying to twist and turn the heads of the defence. How do you combine studying with training for netball? I’m currently reading for a Masters in Commercial Law at Bristol University. The requirements of the course are highly demanding, but so too are my netball training requirements. As a member of the High Performance Squad at the university, they have been terrific in helping me achieve and maintain a balance between my academics and role as an elite athlete. I also receive a lot of support from England Netball as my national governing body, all the support staff, my friends and family, in particular my mum. The O2 is more famous as a music venue. Have you been to see anyone there? If so who was it and what were your thoughts? I went and saw the Spice Girls on their latest world tour. It was absolutely awesome!!! I used to be Scary Spice when I was younger (me and the rest of the population, lol), so to see her in real life with

all of the other girls really took me back to my childhood. It was a fabulous production! What music do you like to listen to? I have an eclectic music taste. However, my music preference would have to be RnB and Hip Hop. I am a huge fan of Beyoncé, Lauryn Hill, Jaheim and Pink. However, when I’m winding down, I like listening to The Fray, Kings of Leon, Sugababes and Nina Simone.
Who is your sporting hero? Serena Williams. She’s successful, athletically built, outspoken and willing to push the boundaries. What advice would you give to young girls who are currently playing netball and want to be like you and play for England? Dream big! If you want to play for England, you have to put your mind to it. To play for England it takes a lot of hard work, commitment to training, dedication to the sport and a determination to succeed as part of a team. In my first trial for England I wasn’t selected, but I went away and worked tirelessly on my basic skills so that the next time I went to trials, they had to pick me! I live by the motto, if at first you fail, try, try and try again. Most importantly, make sure you continue to enjoy playing netball. And finally are we going to win? Without a doubt!

The Boots Skyscraper platforms add the final touches to the extreme theatrical look, but sometimes prove a little bit too hard to walk in, even by Gaga standards. Lower stackedheel cut-out zipped shoeboots still gain the same effect without the vertigo.
The Leotard
The Gloves Leather accessories have always looked slick, but the futuristic finger gloves that Lady G has adopted mean that we can all recreate a little bit of iconic pop style during the winter months and keep our pinkies warm without feeling foolish.

Rarely seen with bottoms on, the leotard is a wardrobe staple for the supreme slim-pinned girl and has once again become a cult fashion item. For the more demure trendsetter, a leotard worn with a pencil skirt is still individual yet far more acceptable.

Body MOT As 2010 dawned I (among many others) decided my body needed a bit of an MOT. Rich foods, wine and an endless supply of sweets over the Christmas period had started to take its toll making me feel bloated, unhealthy and sluggish. Luckily for me the amazing team at NOSH came to my rescue. NOSH – “Natural, Organic, Safe and Healthy” – is a company that is all about health and wellbeing, and they guided me through a six-day day juice detox. With freshly prepared, organic smoothies delivered to my door every evening, it took the stress out of the process and allowed me to concentrate more on the benefits of the detox. Four bottles of juice are delivered nightly and come in an array of mouth-watering flavours including The Eliminator – acai powder, pineapple, mango and blueberries with an army of antioxidants to give your system the boost it needs, and The Hydrator containing flaxseed berry, banana, mixed berries, grapes and apple which as they sound were incredibly tasty. Supplemented by herbal teas, salt baths and the helpful ear of a highly qualified team at Nosh the Detox commenced. The process is a hard one and will power is the only added extra that you will need to undertake a body transformation in a short amount of time. If you want to be able to feel the
difference as well as see the difference then the NOSH Detox is definitely for you. At the end of the detox my skin is glowing, my complexion clear and I am a few pounds lighter – the jeans that were a tight squeeze in those post-Christmas days now fit a treat and best of all, I am full of energy. The
High Life
With the festive season firmly behind us, winter holiday destinations are on the minds of many and for those looking for a luxurious getaway, Suvretta House offers the perfect retreat, says JAMES HARRISON
T
here is something about skiing that really appeals; the challenge of the slopes, indulgent mountaintop lunches, the satisfying burn of physical exhaustion and the avid group exchange of the day’s adventures over warming food and lots of drink. Having visited many ski resorts over the years there is one that I have always wanted to add to that list – St Moritz, the winter playground of the rich and famous. Set against a breathtaking backdrop of snow-capped peaks, blue lakes and verdant forests, Suvretta House, a fairytale castle, sits nestled in the alpine landscape, just 2 kilometers from the main resort of St Moritz. No ordinary ski hotel, Suvretta House has a loyal clientèle and it’s easy to see why; attention to detail and a personalised touch is apparent in the finest of details, a rare find in a hotel of its size and grandeur. Rooms are elegant and I was lucky enough to stay on the south side of the hotel, which enjoys magnificent views over the lakes and mountain landscape,
a perfect introduction to the Upper Engadine. Suvretta is a hotel that boasts impressive heritage, having hosted guests such as Egypt’s King Faruk and the Shah of Persia and, as a prestigious member of ‘Swiss Deluxe Hotels’ and ‘The Leading Hotels of the World’, you are surrounded by the highest luxury and service. However traditional hospitality is very much alive at Suvretta, which has been run by Swiss-born Vic and Helen Jacob since 1989. Guest facilities are impressive; outside the hotel are four rinks for curling and another for ice-skating, along with a 36° whirlpool Jacuzzi. Indoors, those who prefer their bathing to be less extreme can enjoy the heated swimming pool, and can get further exercise from workouts in the ‘Gymnasticum’. And if all that gets too tiring, there is always the option to clear ones pores in the sauna or breathe in the mountain air on the sun terrace – as well as having access to a number of bars, restaurants and exclusive

shopping boutiques located within the hotel itself. For skiers, the 188-room hotel is a delight as it has its own ski school and ski lift, which links skiers to the main resort’s ski system at the vast Corviglia skiing area. Skiing at St Moritz is incredibly sophisticated; even chairlifts come complete with pull-down covers to protect skiers from the elements. Suvretta’s very own ski school for private and children’s group instruction is your chance to conquer the slopes in style, with the help of some of the world’s skiing and snowboarding experts, all clad in their Prada ski suits, as one would expect in St Moritz. The home of the famous Cresta toboggan run and two-time host of the Winter Olympic Games, the Olympic downhill slopes and cross-country skiing are world famous. The resort has no fewer than 59 ski and chairlifts, and four large contrasting ski areas which offer 350km of piste and 35 mountain restaurants, a true winter playground. Suvretta’s in-house nursery, ‘Teddy’s World’, provides
professional care and supervision for little ones, giving you time to relax as they enjoy a wonderland of fun and entertainment. The family focus at Suvretta House does not end there; the ‘Teddy Club’ caters exclusively for kids, allowing them to eat together away from the adults. Meanwhile, adults can engage in refined ritual, with formal wear the prescribed dress for diners in the Grand Restaurant – or dine less formally in the SuvrettaStube Club. Whether you’re looking to brave the rigour of winter sports, gaze at scenery or simply luxuriate in the presence of the well-known and well-to-do, anything is possible for visitors of St Moritz and a stay at Suvretta House will not disappoint, in fact, you may find yourself making it an annual treat.

Just Dance
Fancy the dance-off to end all dance-offs in the comfort of your own front room? If so, then Just Dance is the game for you ... Just Dance is a similar concept to the likes of Guitar Hero and Singstar but for the inner dancer in you! With 32 tunes from across the decades, there is a rhythm to rock out to for every ability. Using the Wiimote as a motion sensor, you dance alongside the onscreen virtual dancer to choreographed routines alongside the original tracks. The soundtrack has that “cheesy” almost school disco feel to it with tunes such as MC Hammer’s Can’t Touch This or Groove is in the Heart by DeeLite. Anthems such as Blur’s Girls and Boys and The Presidents of the USA’s Lump will even get the leastlikely-to-dance mates up out of their chairs stomping in time to the beat. The videos on screen are not only easy to follow for all ages and abilities, but they are fun to watch as an onlooker. From the quirky moves to the themed outfits, these crazy, digitally coloured dancers really do make the game. With no pricey extras to buy and an RRP of only £24.99 I would suggest that this game is suitable for all ages, it really is a must have! 9/10 AVAILABLE ON THE WII
Darksiders Ride out as War, one of the fabled Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and dish out violent and bloody retribution to the forces of Heaven and Hell! Sound appealing? Then read on... Tricked into bringing about the end of the world before its appointed time, War is accused of failing in his duty, and tasked with finding the responsible party and bringing them to judgement. Cue an epic journey across the vacant and devastated ruins of Earth! Provided you enjoy gory and brutal carnage, Darksiders has a lot to offer. Blending elements from several wildly successful games such as the God of War and Legend of Zelda series, Darksiders boasts a fluid and entertaining combat system interspersed with platforming and engaging puzzle-solving. The combat, while initially fairly simplistic, improves significantly as you progress through the game with upgrades, new gear and abilities, although on the easier difficulty settings many will find these largely superfluous. Graphically, Darksiders delivers a polished and expansive experience, portraying a decaying world in which humanity is long extinct, with a diverse and creative series of environments, filled with welldesigned and ever more imposing and fearsome foes. 8/10 OUT NOW FOR XBOX 360 AND PLAYSTATION 3.

Questions with...
DARTS
10
Venue: What is the best thing about being a darts player? Adrian: I love the travelling and the places darts has taken me, places like Las Vegas in America. We may get to go to Australia this year, and I’d love to go there. Also I’d have to say the buzz I get from playing in front of massive crowds on the biggest stages in the world is great too. Venue: We hear some of the odd things that players request at a competition. What’s the one thing you need in your backstage area? Adrian: A good practice area is all I need, and quiet surroundings to concentrate on my game ahead. I don’t have any particular pre-match meal, but some players are quite picky with their preparation!
Adrian Lewis, 25, is one of the hottest talents in darts. Currently the PDC’s Young Player of the Year, “Jackpot” is ranked seventh in the PDC Order of Merit and visits The O2 this month to compete in the Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts Venue: If you were an animal, what would you be and why? Adrian: I’d be a dog. I’ve no idea why, I just like them. Venue: If you could have any super power, what would it be and why? Adrian: One where I’m unbeatable – at everything, not just darts. Venue: If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? Adrian: I’d have to be somewhere lying in the sun – probably the Caribbean. Venue: If you weren’t a darts player, what do you think you would be doing right now? Adrian: I’d probably still be in the building trade – I was working there before I turned professional aged 19.
Venue: What is on your iPod at the moment? Adrian: It’s broken at the minute! But usually I love listening to Stereophonics, Oasis, a bit of Elvis and Rod Stewart. I like most music though, and listen out for my walk-on song at The O2, Pigbag – it really gets me going for matches. Venue: What’s the motto/advice you live by? Adrian: I believe that you can practice all you want, but there’s no preparing for the moment you have to beat a big name. Phil Taylor told me that once and I’ve always remembered it! Venue: If you could meet anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be and what would you say to them? Adrian: Probably Elvis, just to find out what it was like being such a massive star and what it was like in his shoes. Venue: If you were stranded on a desert island what three items would you take with you? Adrian: I’d take my daughter, my darts and a football. Oh, I’d need to take a dartboard too – can I take four items?
