How have recent advances in computer technology affected story telling within artwork? Technology has improved vastly over the last hundred years, it made it easier for artists and commuters to use computers and software to create pieces and commercial adverts. Over 65% of youngster’s are staying out of trouble and getting astonishing grades due to technology. As computers has improved and the technology within them has developed the cost will be much more affordable for people. People now see technology in a different way and light. In the 60s’s people needed to write up essays on paper with a pen, but now people can use Microsoft Word to type up their essays, which is much more convenient and easier for the user. Throughout this essay I will explore the works of the artists such as Daisuke Takatura, Pejac and Jon Kriwol. See how they explore the advance of computers and their designs. Quite a few artists use surrealism in their artwork to convey the narrative path with the power of modern technology. Surrealism is where a 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature which sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images. Artists in the current day try to have a meaning or a story behind their art pieces and that’s where story telling comes from; what that means is trying to convey a message, a word, and a phase to the public. Also the other purpose of art pieces is to create entertainment for the public and create awareness for the artist and their piece. You don’t get the same ideas as looking at a poster, or a movie trailer or even the actual movie as they have real dialogs and movements. Even though some artists don’t use words in their art work, questions will still raise from the public. For example, why did the artist use these particular colours? Or how a person can perform an action which is humanely impossible? Or Why is it in a surrealism location? This is what interests the public and motivates them to take action. There has a definite impact from software’s such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and many more. This software’s allow the artists to do things that normal pen and paper can’t do like create a simple over layer, it lets them be imaginative and creative and when they put out their creativity. It will inspire people who want to become an artist or just want to create a piece to give a loved one. When this happens it will stretch the limits of people and expand their minds to new worlds of exploration, not only that art pieces can lead to short films and interactive games on the computer. People can share all these new explorations to the public by posting on the internet i.e. YouTube, Tumblr and many others. These tutorials will help other people and help them become better at things they were not so good at the beginning. When this new software’s where released it cost a lot. But as more people started to use it and recommended to others it became more popular and used by lots of people and became more affordable. Lots of effort went into when creating pieces with scalpels and with raw materials. To be honest there are no limits to an extent in using these advanced computers as Graphics Designers to use all the time. People are coming up with new techniques and improving the software’s and even producing more software’s for people to use.

Artist Research and Analysis Now I will look at artists that relate to the use of advanced computers techniques. The chosen artists use various techniques and software’s to create their pieces. It would be very difficult for them to create the art pieces with the advanced technology that could be taking the pictures to cropping them would be difficult.

Daisuke Takakura The artist is a Photographer and Designer from Japan; born in 1980. All her photo designs tell a story about the particular place and her emotions within that piece. She takes the photos where you will see lots of people at once, like in a park a lot of people go there to have fun. Which is quite clever as it will relate to the public more as they have been to those locations. The plus point is it adds realism to her work as it is not an artificial piece or location.

The initial idea of this piece is trying to create multiple versions of the same person in one photo, so taking one photo at a time in different positions and places helped create an enjoyable piece. She is an un-believable good at photo manipulation, which caught my eye and so I picked this piece. In this particular piece you can tell her theme was enjoyment and happiness; as people go to the park to have fun and enjoy themselves with others and spend time with their loved ones. One thing I like about the piece is that it is realistic it has not made using a paint brush and colours. Being very realistic raises questions of why did she create multiple versions of herself? etc. This is a great example of how modern technology is used to change the way a message can be told to the public. This piece created by herself can explain how she felt at that moment of time during the creation of that piece. In that moment you can tell that, she was ecstatic and joyful; Daisuke is featured in all her pieces. Daisuke uses modern techniques such as digital photography, editing software and a digital camera. I find it interesting of how she uses high bright tones to make the piece more of a joyful atmosphere. With the multiple versions of her make the piece louder, so the overall 2

mood that is given is to look excited and be with people you love, making sure everybody with you is accounted for and their emotions are the same as yours. One thing I have noticed is most of her work is taken landscape and at times taken portrait. Her taking the photos in landscapes allows her to play around and add a lot more to the piece than in portrait; and to capture most of the location behind her. Landscape shows most of the background and foreground so more detail is within the piece. In some of her pieces, she is quite apart from the camera and it is taken from a higher angle. Many photos have been taken to compose this piece and also lighting effects was also added to make the piece create a different pleased atmosphere than without it; this was done by using Photoshop.

Analysing this piece made me think of the recent demand of computers in the world and the development of software’s to produce magnificent pieces such as the one above. I find this piece very inspirational as she is so successful in creating a piece that is impossible and so realistic. Many people will also find it inspiring and can relate to her work of doing many things at once, or even being at many places at once, which is impossible. A world with no rules or regulations especially no limits, allowing anyone to tell a story with their art piece.

Pejac He is a Spanish artist, he started on his artistic career due to dissatisfaction. It was not of his childhood but his art teacher didn’t appreciate art as he did as for him art belongs to everyone. His artwork tells how the character in the piece is reacting in the situation it’s in. It is like an own, unique style which belongs to himself, he expresses his feelings through the body posture and signals of the character within the piece.

3

I chose to look at the artist called Pejac, because when I first saw his piece I thought to myself that it would definitely work with a story telling has changed with the help of modern technology. His work is very simple but has so much meaning to it. In addition Pejac paints on walls and paper. This allows him to explore more and create new pieces and using those ideas; he incorporates it into his artwork. His drawings mainly include people, furthermore uses black paint in most occasions, the people don’t have detail, they are very simple but when you look closer to the smaller details such as posture or the way the person is standing. The piece above shows a person on top of a building. He drew it on paper to see how it looks and then combined it with the photo of a building, making the piece look authentic and making people raise questions such as why is the person so small compared to the building? Or Why is he/ she standing on the building the first place? Etc. He uses a camera to take pictures of particular locations and draws on the person then goes to combine the picture with the person, as the location is not in a very popular area it makes the eyes wander around freely the image. Even though 2 or more photos are combined together it still looks believable and can’t tell more than one photo was taken. He puts ordinary stuff people will do during their free time together such as fishing, or a boy spending time with his father. His photos are taken the in the suburbs what that means is people who have less than others can still appreciate art. As he said earlier art belongs to everyone. The building does not look refurbished or now, looks like it’s been there for quite a long time, as the texture on the surface of the building says it all. Much more rusty and filthy. In addition you can it’s not a clear sky, it’s quite cloudy, this could set the mood, as it may reflect the artists mood. Signs like that could mean the artist may be depressed or frustrated. The public will see that and can tell straight away, furthermore you see a plane over the boys head, this means the artist wants to move to a different place and do fishing at that particular place. Furthermore, why is the person coloured in full black, this could mean he does not like the place.

I believe Pejac is one of an artist that uses computers for taking the picture and uploading his work online. He also uses paints and brushes to create his pieces, so they can see it is believable as they are images of real people in real locations. Comparing Daisuke to Pejac, of my chosen artists use real- life photos in their art work, they both manipulate their photos into their artwork. Both of the artists do not use text in their artwork, this way the viewer will concentrate on the entire piece, instead of the text covering the piece. Both pieces are very simple not much editing when through to the making of the pieces. Photos have been taken to create the piece. They both use people in their artwork, however one is mono-scenic and the other are multiple images. The two pieces have a central composition, so both pieces are centralized, so the artist based their work in the middle, as the piece on the right the focus is in the middle and the left piece the focus is in the middle but there are aspects where it is around the piece at the same time. The artist wants the viewer to concentrate on the figure in the image and not the surroundings as much as they want to but it can be considered.

Jon Kriwol The final artist I have chosen to look is Jon Kriwol. He was born in Warsaw, Poland. He is the photographer and uses digital mastering into his work.

5

Jon Kriwol is a heavy user of photographs in order to create a real- life situation. I like the way he does something un-usual in his work, like the one above where he is pulling the fence apart, who would do that in a public place. He allows himself to interact with the environment, which makes his work more realistic. He uses a camera which stands on a tripod behind him, so that it can take the image of him pulling the fence. Furthermore he uses Photoshop to add effects to create the crunch effect to the wall. As said before he is an ultimate photographer, who relies on the modern technology to produce an out- standing outcome with a story behind it. It clearly shows that without the modern devices such as the digital camera or the editing software, Jon Kriwol would have not been able to create pieces as the one above, but as devices as such are available. He is able to create a piece with such detail with the correct amount of lighting; size and colour tone; creating a realistic back-story to behind the piece. Jon Kriwol is no expert in graphic designing, however he has taught himself to edit photos on those software’s, as everybody can learn from the internet and others. The artist is not the only one that uses the internet to teach themselves, many new graphic designers develop their skills by the internet and what others post and after develop their own skills, using the once they learned. This would not be impossible without the evolution of computers. Being able to create this type of art- work gives him a separate identity to the rest of the photographers.

In the piece above he shows a similar technique to own before, he has taken a photo and edited on a software using different kind of effects to get a curvy, swerving wave. Which breaks apart to either side of the photo. In addition, he alters the lighting and the colour tone in the artwork to give it the realism, so when a viewer looks at it, they know it is real by the way the artists portrays the piece.

6

Conclusion In conclusion, back to the question which was initially asked, how have recent advances in computer technology affected story telling within artwork. Programmes such as Photoshop and Illustrator have aided artists to create pieces in a matter of hours instead of days and weeks, this suggests that time is used wisely and effectively, in addition the piece is done with high quality due to improvement on resolution and upgraded software. This leads on to storytelling with the improvement of technology it has definitely changed the way stories are being told and it has made story telling much easier due to the vast improvement in software, upgraded programmes. Thus making art pieces more realistic and believable. Now you can pour all your thoughts and emotions into the canvas and let others discover your imagination. I believe I get a better understanding when narrative art work includes modern technology, lets me know what the artist is trying to portray in the piece. The increase of narrative pieces using modern technology is astonishing. With the vast improvement of technology, it allows us to see unnoticed pieces, such as video game covers, movie covers, music album covers, posters, bill boards showing adverts on trains, buses, stations all around us. This has a huge impact on us the audience, as for an example teenagers look at the video game cover and if they like it they will buy the game, so the producer of the game cover needs to know what teenagers like and don’t like in order to make sales, same rules apply to books and albums. This strengthens the communication between the art and people, this is all done with the help of modern technology, bringing the relation between people and technology closer and stronger and thus builds a story. The three artists Daisuke Takakura, Pejac and Jon Kriwol, which I have chosen are prime examples of getting the connection to the people. The first artist Daisuke Takakura uses multiple images to create different attributes and elements. These improvements make the story more believable and captivating.
