The highlight of the proposal is to celebrate the use of Cork as a construction material. Locally sourced in Portugal and upcycled from the byproduct of the cork industry, expanded cork is natural, fully recyclable yet highly energyefficient. Its unique properties allow for the use of cork blocks as a single leaf load-bearing construction. Coupled with its sensory qualities, cork is the perfect choice of material for the scheme.

KLAF Tropical House Competition Honorary Mention The competition is a collaboration between PAM (Malaysian Institute of Architects) and EPIC Homes in conjunction with KLAF 2019. As a team, we proposed a modular typology for the Orang Asli (term refers to indigenous people in Malaysia) living in semi-urban areas. The modular scheme was designed to be flexible, economical and easy to build whilst retaining some traditional features of Orang Asli housing - the veranda, elevated building and timber construction. It allows for different extents of expansion and facilitates various configurations. This is an important feature for the client, EPIC Homes who help build tailored houses for the marginalised Orang Asli community across Malaysia. The main living space was above ground level, opening up the ground floor as a temporary sheltered space that could serve as a gathering area for the family and friends. This also exploits the surrounding views while ensuring privacy from the adjacent neighbours.

The project brief seeks to rejuvenate the bus stop at Pasar Chowrasta., Penang. Based on our site visit, we identified 3 main problems of the existing bus stop – poor seating arrangements, obstructed view towards the road and the lack of inclusive facilities for wheelchair users. However, we also found that the existing benches are still in good condition and should be reincorporated in the design. Our design aims to create a fun and engaging public space for bus commuters and market visitors, whilst breaking the social stigma of public transport. We hope the new Pasar Chowrasta Bus Stop would be a space that welcomes all - residents, tourists, young, old etc., just like the market itself.

REIGNITING CARDIFF Y6 - City Masterplan REDEFINING THE IDENTITY OF AN ENERGY EXPORTER Cardiff became one of the world’s leading exporters of coal in the 19th century. It thrived during the Industrial Revolution, relying on exploiting the natural resource from the Brecon Beacons to fuel iron and copper industries. The depression of the 1930s and consequent slowdown of British coal industry, however, has left nothing but a scar for the capital of Wales, which is yet to regain its position on the world stage. Cardiff never fully recovered from the decline of the coal industry and has failed to regain a position as a thriving capital city of the world. Today, despite its proximity to the M4 to the north and the Severn Estuary to the south, the sprawling city has become a disjointed collection of key infrastructure which is yet to coherently serve the world. Ultimately, the industry which gave Cardiff its success and deserving capital city has led to many of the issues the city faces today. In this critical moment of the climate and biodiversity emergency the actions which gave Cardiff opportunities have lost Cardiff’s potential as a vibrant, sustainable and desirable capital city. In the light of Climate Emergency, there is a need for bold moves to meet the high demand for renewable energy. The Severn Barrage is a solution that have the potential to address the 5% of UK energy demand. The masterplan works on the assumption that the Severn Barrage is to be built. The masterplan seeks to help position Cardiff as the Capital for Renewable Energy, making it once again a major player on the world stage as an energy exporter. These different opportunities and challenges that were addressed within the design of the masterplan. The group masterplan envisioned the extension of green connections from the north (Brecon Beacons) to the south (Estuary), focusing on designing the central green corridor as the new ‘gaterway’to Wales across the Severn Barrage. As well as accessible green space and enhanced ecology, the spine provides an integrated N-S netowrk of transport, district heat, water and waste managment, feeding into W-E routes.

Cardiff Screen Academy is proposed as a sixth-form secondary school specialising in film for Butetown, a diverse but deprived area. A school with a community front hopes to keep untold stories of Tiger Bay community then and now alive. The proposal hopes to be the beacon to nurture future storytellers to create a more diverse film industry and continues to document and keep the rich stories of the local community alive. The building seeks to form a new heart in the that joins the new build and the collective listed buildings by celebrating the volume of the main hall which also acts as a film production soundstage. Inspired by a ship construction, it pays homage to the Cardiff’s docklands heritage on site.

The rapidly growing film industry in Cardiff is in need for more local talents to position the city as the next capital of film after London in the UK. However, the film industry is known to be unfriendly to newcomers particularly from underprivileged background. Therefore, earlier exposure to the industry for these children would provide them employable skills and better connections to access the industry.

The facade intentionally distinguished itself from the red brick and bath stone of the classical buildings. It chooses to portray a neutral tone to reflect its industrial heritage with the use of aluminium and glass, playing with reflection, shadows and translucency. The upper floors in particular uses the translucent U-channel glass to create well-lit learning and social spaces.

The east elevation creates a new glazed front on street level and reactivate the historical Dock Lane and formed a new edge condition of the city masterplan’s Lloyd George Park. The building facade reflects the repetition of vertical elements in its surrounding context and reinterpreted it with the use of industrial materials to celebrate the docklands heritage. Parts of the bricks are also reclaimed from the demolished section and use on the bottom facade in the north and northeast corner, remembering what was there. Like the tiny pixels found on screens, the eastern stair core in particular features a kinetic facade of hanged aluminium plates driven by wind, its movement constantly changes the way light is reflects creating a shimmering effect.

REWIND • REWILD • RECONNECT Y5 - Bath Quays Group Masterplan The brief for the project asked for us to masterplan the site in Bath Quays development zone and within it allocate ourselves eight adjacent plots, one for each individual in respective tutor group to develop individual take of designing ‘Making Spaces’ (a space for making things). Our group taken the approach of REWIND, REWILD & RECONNECT for our masterplan. We began by first looking back to the historical maps (rewind) and then going forward with strategies for rewilding and reconnecting the site with the city through our individual schemes. The timeline is put together to show how the site will be built in layers over a period of different stages. We believe that a masterplan is an ongoing process hence we use the timeline to investigate how the site will continuously evolve from the start with ground preparation to the arrival of each of us grouped together into different precincts - first the nurturers, followed by the recyclers and finally welcoming the weavers to complete the puzzle.

Y5 - Making through Play The project is a consolidation of ideas through 10 weeks of different theme-led experimentation and in conjunction with the development of the group masterplan, particularly the agenda of ‘reconnecting’. My project is an urban learning playscape on the northwest corner of the masterplan. The scheme revolves around a central theme of child’s play. The final outcome shows how initial conceptual developments have been brought together, i.e. the observation of the common scene of scaffolding and the idea of child’s play which tends to try challenge the norm. As a result, the building is form by a scaffolding-like structure with a box perched on top.

Child’s play is the core of the scheme. The drawing show how play is spread widely across the site on the ground plane, providing a variety of environment for play - a hill, a cave, water, sand, stones and trees. There are opportunities free for children to explore, discover and invent their own play.

HOMELESS ACTIVITY CENTRE
Y4 - Towards a Respectful Co-existence R E C L A I M I N G U R B A N S PAC E REPURPOSING LIVES Homelessness is more than just about shelter. Various recounts have highlighted loneliness as a major problem in the community. The proposed centre beside Castle Park not only provides a place for them to access day-to-day basic facilities like shower and food, but also offers long-term support to them, acting as a physical manifestation of ‘Bristol Homeless Connect’ website. A place for the homeless community to seek help, learn, be empowered and regain their confidence to join the society. The building is defined by a triple-height atrium, forming an internal street that echoes the historic St Mary-le-Port axis reinstated on the northern edge which is part of the council’s ambition. Sitting on a concrete plinth, the pavilion-like timber structure is a gathering place for everyone, both public and the ‘clients’ to enjoy and celebrate food together with the hope to break the public’s stereotype against the homeless community.
Reinstated St Mary-le-Port Street reconnects the historical axis from the St Nicholas Market with St Peter’s Ruin which can be seen at a distance behind St Mary-le-Port Church Tower ruins.

BEATING THE OFFSIDE TRAP Y3 - Urban Design The project is the second collaboration between both architecture and civil engineering students. The brief is to design a footbridge across Limehouse Cut to create a new urban space at the site located in Poplar, in hopes to break the offside trap. We wanted to celebrate the area’s cultural diversity and to integrate all with the access to an urban playable space with a street food market designed for families and children to enjoy, reducing social and economic inequality in the area. Thus, a habitable bridge is created with street food market and multipurpose studio spaces, sheltered underneath a playable roof space. The scheme also hopes to use food’s universal ability in bringing people together by providing a platform for different local cultures to cook and sell their own cuisine, which in turn creates employment opportunities.

PLACEMENT WORKS On Architecture
I did a 4-month placement at On Architecture, a medium-sized firm in Canterbury, as part of
my MArch course. I worked mainly on residential
schemes and retirement living apartment in Stage 1-3.
Each of them presented me with the
opportunity to work on buildings of different
scale and responding to different context and environment.
My task was mainly
drafting on AutoCad, creating illustrations on Photoshop, preparing documents on InDesign and occasionally building a virtual model on SketchUp.
Through working on several pre-application
and full planning applications, I learnt about the requirements of such documents, and also understanding the procedures that would
happen for Stage 2 and Stage 3 in each project.

C’arch Architecture + Design I have done two 6-month architectural placement at C’arch Architecture + Design an award-winning firm in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. Throughout my placement, I have participated on a range of projects from RIBA Work Stage 0 up till Stage 7. I have worked closely with architects in assisting them. I have also participated in several client-architect meetings and attended multiple in-house and external CPDs.
BLOCK 16 RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT (APARTMENT TOWERS & CLUBHOUSE) Planning Application & Tender Drawings
The project is a development that includes 3 blocks of condominium tower, a clubhouse and 389 units of strata villa. I was involved in producing drawings for the planning submission during my first placement at the firm, later tasked with assisting the preparation of tender drawings primarily for the clubhouse building in my second placement. I was able to look into the details of designs and learn to consider them based on construction costs and methods.

HANDS-ON INVOLVEMENT Grizedale Arts: Architecture School 2020
In the Summer just before the second wave of COVID pandemic, I participated in Grizedale Art’s Architecture School - Building A New Rural, a week long self-build workshop - led by Paloma Gormley and Summer Islam of Material Cultures, and Takeshi Hayatsu of Hayatsu Architects. It was a rare opportunity for myself to be hands-on building an outdoor classroom collaboratively in the old farmhouse garden at Nibthwaite Grange Farm. I also got to learn and explore the use of local materials and vernacular building techniques such as dry stone slate wall construction and the craft of making a gate from scratch using fresh oak timber.
