Welcome The beautiful weather heralds another summer of events and activities for everyone to enjoy, as part of the Rural City of Wangaratta’s Summer in the Parks program. Each summer, we provide an array of events designed to keep you, your family and your friends entertained throughout the warmer months. This season, you are invited to enjoy free or low cost events that are a great way to keep amused throughout the summer. It doesn’t matter if you are interested in music, arts, culture, food and wine, or you just like to have fun, there is something for everyone.

Christmas Events Sunday 15 December

Wangaratta Lions Club Carols by Candlelight Merriwa Park 6.30pm Pre Carols Entertainment 7.30pm-9.30pm Carols followed by fireworks A popular family event, the Wangaratta Lions Club Carols by Candlelight promises an array of vibrant talent for all ages. The magic of Christmas will be celebrated in song with more than 20 acts by acclaimed entertainers and local performers including Rod Vincent, Maurice Milani, Glenn Starr (Australasian Michael Buble Show), Sing Australia Choir and a special performance by local primary school students - directed by Wayne Robinson of Northern Rivers Academy of Music. Santa will be paying a visit to say hello and will be followed by the grand finale - a fireworks display for everyone to enjoy. The 2013 Wangaratta Community Raffle will be drawn with some lucky winners walking away with a new car and/or travel vouchers. Pack your own picnic or simply enjoy the wide variety of food, drinks, ice-cream, coffee and a BBQ, available for purchase. If the weather is inclement, the Carols will be held at Holy Trinity Cathedral.

Sunday 22 December

Christmas Moonlight Movie & Activities Ovens Riverside Square, Faithfull Street Live music from 7.00pm / Film to begin at dusk Come down to the Ovens Riverside Precinct to enjoy kids’ activities and share some Christmas cheer as the countdown to Christmas draws nearer. Food and beverages available for purchase. ICE AGE 4: CONTINENTAL DRIFT (PG) 88 Minutes Manny, Diego and Sid embark upon another adventure after their continent is set adrift, using an iceberg as a ship. Along the way, they encounter sea creatures and battle pirates as they explore a new world.

Moonlight Movies Catch a movie in the great outdoors! Each year different venues throughout the Rural City are chosen for the community to view a range of the latest movies under the stars. Grab your family and friends and pack your own chair, blanket or beanbag and settle in for a great show on the big screen.

Kids’ activities, BYO picnic, drinks and plate of supper to share from 7.00pm Film to begin at dusk. BRAVE (PG) 100 Minutes In ancient and rugged Scotland, the impetuous, independent princess Merida is a young aspiring archer, having been encouraged from a young age by her loving, larger-than-life father, King Fergus. Her mother Queen Elinor has conscientiously schooled her daughter to be proficient in all things as the future Queen, but Merida rebels. When the King and Queen invite the surrounding clans to present their sons as suitors, Merida is desperate and finds a witch, who grants her a spell - with devastating results. FREE TO ATTEND

RIO (PG) 96 Minutes Blu is a domesticated Macaw who never learned to fly, and enjoys a comfortable life with his owner and best friend Linda. Blu and Linda think he’s the last of his kind, but when they learn about another macaw who lives in Rio de Janeiro, they head to the exotic city to find Jewel, Blu’s female counterpart. Not long after they arrive, Blu and Jewel are kidnapped by a group of bungling animal smugglers. Blu escapes, aided by the street smart Jewel and a group of wisecracking and smooth-talking city birds. Now, with his new friends by his side, Blu will have to find the courage to learn to fly, thwart the kidnappers who are hot on their trail, and return to Linda. FREE TO ATTEND 4

DESPICABLE ME 2 (PG) 98 Minutes Gru is recruited by agent Lucy Wilde of the AntiVillain League to help track down a powerful super criminal who has developed a dangerous new serum that turns people (and Minions) into evil monsters. THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (PG) 123 Minutes A group of British retirees “outsource” their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India. Enticed by advertisements for the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, they arrive to find the palace is a shell of its former self, managed by the son of the late owner, Sonny. Though the new environment is far less luxurious than they imagined, they each experience something life changing. FREE TO ATTEND

New Years Eve Wangarattas biggest and best New Years Eve party returns this year with a bang! MONDAY 31 December – Apex Park, Wangaratta Entertainment from 7.00pm Fireworks 9.15pm and Midnight Film to begin at dusk There will be an array of entertainment before the sun goes down to keep the kids amused with the first fireworks to commence at a childfriendly 9.15pm. For night owls, stick around as the big screen goes up, and check out the Moonlight Movie that will take you through to the midnight fireworks show, welcoming in 2014. MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE’S MOST WANTED (PG) 93 Minutes Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman are still fighting to get home to their beloved Big Apple. Their journey takes them through Europe where they find the perfect cover: a travelling circus, which they reinvent - Madagascar style. FREE TO ATTEND

Outdoor Ball Saturday 18 January – King George V Gardens 7.00pm – 11.00pm Enjoy a sizzling Saturday night with the hot sounds of Vatos Locos, bringing their smooth Latin rhythms to the beautiful backdrop of King George V Gardens. Gather up your friends and family and head outdoors to enjoy a range of local beers, wines and gourmet food, all available for purchase on the evening. Get your feet tapping and your hips shaking as the music takes over………… There won’t be a spare inch left on the dancefloor! Tables of 10 are available for $50 – this allows you to reserve a prime spot in the park or simply bring a blanket and picnic and enjoy a FREE night’s entertainment. THIS EVENT IS FULLY LICENCED. Australia Day On Australia Day we come together as a nation to celebrate what’s great about Australia and being Australian. It’s the day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation. It’s the day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future. Australia Day is driven by communities throughout the Rural City of Wangaratta, and the celebrations held in each town are unified by the celebration of what’s great about our communities and our country – this is the foundation of Australia Day’s ongoing success.

Wangaratta Saturday 26 January – King George V Gardens 8.00am – 11.00am Stay cool in King George Gardens this year, as we celebrate Australia Day. The official event will include a flag raising, awards, citizenship ceremony, followed by a FREE BBQ morning tea, proudly cooked by the Wangaratta Lions Club. The 2014 address will be delivered by Hayley Bolding - Hayley Bolding was just 23 and working as an intern with a non-profit organisation in the Indian city of Mumbai, when she saw an urgent need for capacity building across similar organisations. She founded Atma (www.atma.org. in) – which means soul ‘in Hindi’ – to support local groups in their efforts to give children a better chance at life through education. Hayley holds a degree in International Studies, and is currently pursuing a Masters in Philanthropy. She was a participant in the inaugural Australia India Youth Dialogue in 2012 and was awarded Victorian Young Australian of the Year 2013 for her work in India. She is passionate about promoting people-to-people exchange across borders. FREE TO ATTEND

Creative Youth Hands Up Wangaratta Friday 20 December – Olympic Pool 6.30pm – 10.30pm $5 Hands Up Wangaratta is an under 18’s music event with some of Wangaratta’s hottest DJs. Come down for a dip on the pool, a ride on the waterslide, a dance and a whole lot more. Featuring DJ Sammy B, WLLD, Jarrod Elliott and Hayden Clark. This is a drug, alcohol and smoke free fully supervised event with no pass outs.

Kool Arts for Kids Wangaratta Art Gallery Summer Holiday Workshops Landscape Collage – Vera Rubega Tuesday 21 January $10 Session 1 – 10am – 12 noon, age 6 – 11yrs Session 2 – 1pm – 3pm , age 12 – 16yrs Learn the technique of a Collage and create strange and unusual landscapes with a Surrealist twist using magazine images, textured papers and anything that comes to hand. A great way to learn new techniques and have fun at the same time.

Create cool artworks from an ordinary piece of paper, transforming it into a three dimensional form. You will learn lots about the technique pick up hints and have fun.

Monday 6 January – 1.30pm Summer Reading Club Children of all ages are invited to explore mystery, detective and crime fiction by becoming ‘super sleuths’ at Wangaratta Library. Investigators will become masters of disguise, observers of clues, code decipherers and problem solvers in the nationwide Summer Reading Club: Investigation. The Wangaratta Library conducts a range of school holiday activities
