How to display the U.S. flag with respect and pride Celebrating national Flag Day with pride, respect Flag Day is celebrated every year on June 14 to commemorate the adoption of the U.S. flag on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. After decades of state and local celebrations across the country that date as far back as the early 1900s, Flag Day was officially established by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. However, the designation was not written into law until 1949 when President Harry S. Truman signed an Act of Congress officially establishing June 14 as Flag Day. In advance of its 100th anniversary this year, the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) will celebrate Flag Day with pride, but the organization - which has been around since there were only 48 stars on the flag - believes the American flag should fly high and proud throughout the year and be celebrated every day. It symbolizes the pride of our nation and serves as a constant reminder of those in the military who fight to protect our country and our freedom. The flag has led our troops into battle, inspired creativity and patriotism, and has served as a symbol of our country, our form of government and our freedom for more than 240 years. It has withstood difficult weather conditions and unimaginable assaults and remains flying outside our businesses, our schools, our government buildings, at our outposts around the world and on the moon. It is strong and resilient, just like the American people. In a world with so much unrest, our flag serves as an enduring reminder of our strength and the privileges of freedom and stability we enjoy in the 6 RuralLeaderMag.com | June 2019
United States. On Flag Day, take time as a proud American to show your patriotism, your strength and your support for the veteran community by celebrating our nation’s flag the right way. As you raise your Old Glory this Flag Day, remember these simple U.S. Flag Code rules: * When hoisting or lowering the flag, salute or place a hand over your heart. * Display the flag vertically from sunrise to sunset, whether indoors or outdoors. * The flag should not be displayed on rainy days, unless it is an all-purpose flag. * When lowered, the flag should never touch anything beneath it. Flag Day is a perfect opportunity for Americans to demonstrate their patriotism by supporting our veterans, military and their families. Celebrating those who serve our country is core to the American Legion Auxiliary’s values and the central focus of the organization’s activities. For nearly a century, the organization has been honored to serve, educate and support those who serve our nation in the military. Last year, ALA members donated 5 million hours of community service to our nation’s veterans. Movies both bring us together and bridge generational divides. They help us relate to each other and understand past eras. Great movies also shape a generation, creating a common experience. They reflect the hopes and dreams of their audiences. Here are 10 movies to help forge connections between parents and children, or grandparents and grandchildren. They will evoke memories and provide lively topics for conversation. Animated films: Cartoons often reveal emotions kept beneath the surface. Though these children’s films were released over 30 years apart, they share a common theme: What would you give up for love? “Lady and the Tramp,” 1955, tells of two dogs born on opposite sides of the tracks who fall in love. Pampered cocker spaniel Lady feels neglected after her humans have their first baby. Tramp, a stray, also feels abandoned by humans - he scrounges for food to get by. Would Lady give up her cushy life to be with Tramp? Would Tramp give up his freedom to be with her? “The Little Mermaid,” 1989, introduces Ariel, a mermaid who wants to be human after falling for a human prince. Ariel must choose whether to sacrifice her beautiful voice to be with him. Coming-of-age stories: These films explore social cliques and the rules people coped with while growing up. How would they resonate with today’s teens? In “Rebel Without a Cause,” 1955, James Dean plays a teen from a middle-class family struggling with his identity and parental criticism. When he’s arrested for drunkenness, his bickering parents arrive, revealing their dysfunction. In jail, he befriends a girl who violated curfew and another troubled boy. The three develop a friendship, until they run into trouble with a gang. A more lighthearted look at teen angst, “The Breakfast Club” (1985), follows an unlikely group suffering Saturday detention together. Although the teens are from different social cliques, they form a bond, learning they have more in common than they first thought. Romance: Do you know how your parents first met? Maybe you should ask again. “Marty,” 1955, introduces a middle-aged man badgered by his family to get married. His mother pushes him to go to a dance, where he meets Clara,

an “old maid” abandoned by her blind date for being “plain.” Though both are deemed unattractive by society, they overcome criticism from their community and make a connection. “When Harry Met Sally,” 1989, asks the question: Can men and women be friends? The comedy follows their friendship over the years, until it blossoms into romance. Interspersed with their love story are interviews with elderly couples telling how they first met. Gender-bending comedies: Provocative for their times, these movies explore gender roles and romance. How do you think they would play to audiences today? In “Some Like It Hot,” 1959, musicians who witnessed a mob massacre escape by dressing as women and joining an all-female band. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon star with Marilyn Monroe in a hilarious movie that questions gender stereotypes and myths about romance. Not to be outdone for comedy, “Tootsie,” 1982, also explores gender expectations. An out-of-work actor with a bad reputation lands a soap opera gig disguised as a woman. Social norms are challenged as he navigates his new life - as a woman - while pursuing his acting career. Blockbusters: While these movies - released 19 years apart - are very different, they both inspire a sense of adventure. Ask your parents or grandparents about their biggest travels and adventures, and share some of yours. Sweeping epic “Lawrence of Arabia,” 1962, is based on real-life British archaeologist and army officer T.E. Lawrence, who led the Arab Revolt against the Turks during WWI. Lawrence falls in love with the Arabian desert as he battles alongside guerrilla fighters in this iconic drama. A different sort of archaeologist, treasure hunter Indiana Jones seeks the Ark of the Covenant in the 1981 hit “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Indiana Jones must beat the Nazis before they can harness the powers of the Ark. Three Key Questions Adult Learners Should Ask Before Returning to School The decision to return to school is not made lightly. While earning a degree can be highly rewarding in the form of better career opportunities and higher pay, the path to get there can be filled with challenges, especially if you’re trying to fit school and studies in with your work and family responsibilities. An education unlocks so many doors. It’s worth taking the time to make sure you’re opening the door that’s right for you. Before you register for that first class, it’s important to consider and plan for how you’re going to get it all done, from working out an arrangement with your workplace to accommodating your school schedule and enlisting help from family members to get chores done. Here are top questions every potential student should ask themselves before they begin the journey. What are my career goals? When you’re looking at a specific college program, it’s good to take a step back and examine your goals and motivations and how going back to school fits in. If you’re hoping the degree or certification will lead to a promotion or pay increase so you can better support your family, it’s important to know how that will happen. To get a gauge on the local market, search for job openings in your chosen field. If you have time, sit down for informational interviews with people in the field to give you a clearer picture of how a degree or certification can help you. Finally, some institutions provide support and information to prospective students. Make an appointment with the career center so you can better understand how a certain degree will advance your career or help you meet your goals. How will I manage the costs of education? High tuition costs and student loans can be a source of worry for many students. Before you commit to a school, be sure to take some time to uncover resources that will make your education more affordable. Start by talking to the financial aid office. Some insti-

tutions offer scholarships and financing options, as well as programs that incentivize students to do well. For instance, Strayer University automatically enrolls bachelor’s students in its Graduation Fund, which allows students to earn one no-cost course for every three classes successfully completed. These classes can be redeemed in the student’s final year of their bachelor’s degree program. As long as students stay continuously enrolled, these credits have the potential to reduce the cost of a bachelor’s degree by up to 25 percent. Other cost-reducing avenues at other schools include research scholarships and grants, which may be available to people in certain fields. Also, don’t forget to talk to your employer. Many workplaces offer tuition assistance programs to their employees. Does the program offer flexibility for my busy schedule? Earning a degree or certification is a major commitment. For some students, work and family responsibilities can elbow their way into a busy school schedule. “It helps to know the availability and quality of flexible options offered by your school. These offerings can help make your educational experience more manageable and enjoyable,” said Brian Jones, president of Strayer University. There are programs structured so students can learn at their own pace. FlexPath - available at Capella University - gives students the flexibility to complete coursework at a speed that is comfortable for them. Students are evaluated by how well they demonstrate competency in a course, so whether it takes two weeks or 12, they’re free to move on to their next course at their own pace. Playing video games is not simply entertainment or an escape for middle school girls; it can be a confidence booster. The best games offer intellectual challenges, social interaction and a creative outlet. These games provide opportunities for young women to problem solve, be part of a group, express themselves and find their voice. “For many tween/teen girls, gaming can be a star with many points,” says Taina Malén of Star Stable, an online multi-player PC game designed for Gen Z girls. “For some, a game can be about storytelling and adventure; for some, it’s about caretaking; for some, it’s about hobbies; for some, it’s about sport and competition; for some, it’s about socializing. For all, it’s about self-expression - about simultaneously fitting in and standing out.” Here are five features and characteristics to consider when choosing video games for a tween or teen girl: 1) Find games that challenge her to think. Games involving problem-solving help girls feel a sense of accomplishment. When girls analyze a problem and resolve it successfully, it boosts their confidence. Many games today incorporate problem-solving as part of the adventure, such as multi-player games where girls work together to solve quests or challenges. 2) Look for games that require collaboration and teamwork. Games that encourage or even require girls to work together help players hone their collaboration and communication skills, while creating a sense of community. In-game friendships (sometimes with players many states away) can expand the world around them. Games rooted in a positive, shared social experience and teamwork encourage collaboration and friendship. 3) Choose games that mirror her interests. Today’s

tween girls have varied interests, and there are games that support virtually every pursuit - art, music, sports or animals. In addition to immersing themselves in a game subject they love, they are likely to find other girls with the same passion to “nerd out” about horses or soccer or fantastical worlds. 4) Research games that encourage self-expression. Today’s girl gamers tend to prefer open world or sandbox games that let them be creators, where they are customizing characters, building worlds or directing the plot. Girls at this age are in a constant battle to fit in and stand out. Games that allow a customized experience will not only give them a sense of control and decisiveness, but will also let them put their own unique stamp on their game experience which can be very empowering. 5) Select games rich in storytelling and music. Just like a favorite movie, today’s games must also include a clever and interesting story, rich characters and original music. Tween/teen girls are sophisticated consumers, and an evolving story line and fresh music are markers for a game that is worthy of its cost. In many cases, game play can spill over to socializing, where girls talk plot and how it will unfold, the location of hidden gems or why they love a new song. A game like Star Stable can be the springboard for turning a gamer into a creator, where girls are inspired to make music videos, write poetry or produce artwork. These days, gaming is so much more than a simple pastime. It can be a place where girls connect with people with similar interests, grow friendships and express themselves. How to Improve Your Credit Score Before Applying for a Mortgage
In today’s world, lenders use many different types of credit scoring models. There are virtually hundreds of different models out there for lenders to choose from. Many lenders continue to use conventional models that don’t provide a score for millions of consumers. That often puts younger borrowers such as millennials at a disadvantage. Millennials are less likely to have long credit histories, and they may only have one or two credit accounts. Because young adults today carry more student loan debt, they are understandably reluctant to assume more debt. While that’s a prudent approach on the part of millennials, it can cause their score to be lower than those with deeper credit histories. Many lenders are adopting new tools that address this problem. One example is VantageScore 4.0, which scores approximately 40 million more consumers than other conventional models. Unfortunately, mortgage lenders are not able to use this model and rely on more conventional credit scoring models. Regardless of the model, there are some common things you as a consumer can do to make it easier to get your next loan. 1. Assess your report. Get a copy of your report from the three major credit reporting companies (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion) at www.annualcreditreport.com and make sure the information is accurate. Evaluate your issues. Do you have a short credit history? You may need time to build it up. Is your file “thin” (fewer than four credit accounts)? Thicken it up (See No. 2). Are you using too much
of your available credit? Pay down what you can on existing accounts to keep your credit utilization at 30 percent or less. Have you missed payments? Use calendar reminders or other tech solutions to help you stay on time. Getting in the habit of pulling your credit report one every 12 months is a good credit management habit. 2. Keep and use longstanding accounts. Don’t cancel an older account in an attempt to stop yourself from overspending, as the length of your credit history matters in traditional scoring methods. Use your accounts with care, and don’t charge more than you can afford. If you haven’t used an account in a long time, make a small purchase or two to keep the account active. 3. Use technology to your advantage. Many companies allow you to set up automatic payments of minimum amounts to help you avoid late fees, or will send email or text reminders when a bill is coming due. As long as you have the income to support automatic payments (and/or ready reserve at your bank or credit union just in case), go ahead and sign up. Just make sure to keep a record of the dates and amounts of future payments to avoid unpleasant surprises. 4. Test your credit score know-how. Visit www. CreditScoreQuiz.org, created by VantageScore Solutions along with its partner, Consumer Federation of America, to see what you know and learn ways to improve your credit score. No matter your situation, you can improve your own credit outlook by taking stock and following these tips to boost your score.—

Florida’s Space Coast is a Vacation Destination that’s Out of this World For the science, technology and sci-fi enthusiasts in your family, there’s no better way to truly experience the excitement of the modern-day space race than to view a rocket launch in person during the yearlong celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, which in 1969 landed humans on the moon for the first time. Searching for a vacation destination that’s out of this world? Look no further than Florida’s Space Coast - the primary home of NASA rocket launch operations and the origination point for numerous historic missions that have defined U.S. space exploration. And there is a whole lot more for the family to enjoy along the Atlantic coast. Here are some of the best reasons to travel to this vacation destination before the year runs out. 1. Join the space race. Plan your visit around one of the several scheduled rocket launches in 2019. You can view a launch from public beaches and parks, inside the Exploration Tower in Port Canaveral, along the landmark Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier and countless other locations. Tour Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex to examine the Space Shuttle Atlantis up close, gaze upon the legendary NASA launch pads, walk beneath a gargantuan Saturn V moon rocket, meet an actual U.S. astronaut and even train in a space flight simulator. Check out a 3D space film in the IMAX Theater, then take a short journey up the road to Space View Park in Titusville, where you can admire the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Space Shuttle and “In the Line of Duty” monuments. From the park, you can peer across the Indian River to spot NASA’s massive, emblematic Vehicle Assembly Building, which stands tall in the middle of the space center property. 2. Hit the beach. Florida’s Space Coast goes on for 72 miles north to south and is dotted with numerous inviting beaches. Families can enjoy the sun, surf and sand at beachside locales such as Alan Shepard Park (named for the first American in space), which provides picnic, shower and restroom facilities for visitors. To experience one of the area’s many secluded and undeveloped beaches, head to the beautiful
dunes of Canaveral National Seashore, on the region’s northern tip. 3. Shout “surf ’s up!” With warm water temperatures year-round and plenty of wave action, enjoy the surfing capital of the East Coast. Novices can take quick classes at a local surf school and enjoy riding some easy breakers; there are ample challenges, as well, for more experienced surfers. Board rentals and lessons are available at the famed Ron Jon Surf Shop or Cocoa Beach Surf Company. Serious fans of surfing can visit the Florida Surf Museum and attend prominent local surf events, such as the National Kidney Foundation Rich Salick Pro-Am Surf Festival in late summer. 4. Enjoy a cruise. Port Canaveral is home port for major cruise operators such as Carnival Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International. You can plan a Caribbean cruise, or just take in the awesome sight of these magnificent cruise ships as they arrive from sea or depart on their next adventures. In addition, there are a good number of dining, entertainment and recreational options in the port vicinity. 5. Get in touch with nature. Nearby nature preserves and wildlife attractions for the whole family include the nationally acclaimed Brevard Zoo in Melbourne and the Enchanted Forest Nature Sanctuary in Titusville. Go on a guided sea turtle walk at the Barrier Island Sanctuary in Melbourne Beach or spend time roaming the expansive Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, which shares land with the adjacent Kennedy Space Center. For the more adventurous, an airboat ride, kayak trip or fishing excursion might be just the thing. Or simply enjoy plunking down amid some family-friendly commons such as Riverfront Park in historic Cocoa Village, where the kids can frolic on the playground and in the refreshing splash fountain. Up and down this beautiful stretch, every member of the family will find something extraordinary, fun and exhilarating to do. How Colleges are Adapting for Today’s Students Today’s college students bring a wide variety of needs and manage a constant juggle of responsibilities while pursuing a degree. According to the Department of Education, 74 percent of undergraduate students, described as the “new normal,” have at least one nontraditional characteristic such as being a first-generation student, having at least one dependent, or working either full or part time. Further, nearly half of students enrolled today are age 25 or older and are working to complete an unfinished degree, returning to advance their career or re-skill for a new opportunity. As students are redefining their roles, higher education is reimagining pathways for today’s rapidly growing number of nontraditional students who are committed to earning a degree by offering more robust support programs, new technologies and flexible course schedules. 1. Supporting students beyond the classroom: Considering today’s college students are seeking a work-life-school balance, there is an increased demand for student support services to deliver helpful tools, resources and programming designed to aid students from enrollment to graduation. Many online students are stepping back into school after years of taking time off and greatly benefit from personalized resources and support like those offered at ASU Online where students are paired with an online success coach from day one. Success coaches are a lifeline as these learners juggle life with studying and coursework. Man’s Quest for Answers about Rare Disease Uses Genealogy to Unlock Secrets from the Past When Greg first learned about a rare disease affecting his brother, he had no idea that the illness would shortly come to define his own life, or that his search for answers would take him on a journey going back generations to his Irish ancestors. Greg grew up in an active family, and his love of the outdoors carried on throughout his life. But when the keen rock climber started having nerve problems in both wrists that made it difficult for him to grip tightly, he knew he needed help. At first, he thought it was carpal tunnel caused by the repetitive flexing needed in the sport. But after further testing, Greg was diagnosed with hereditary ATTR amyloidosis (hATTR) - the same disease that had robbed his beloved older brother of his independence, ability to function and eventually, his life. “I was absolutely devastated when they told me I had what my brother had. At first, I just refused to accept it,” said Greg. At the time, he didn’t know that hATTR amyloidosis is hereditary and has a genetic link. But with the support of his wife and family, Greg vowed to do everything he could to learn about the condition. He consulted resources such as hATTR Change the Course and learned that, in people with hATTR, an abnormal protein called amyloid builds up in multiple organs of the body where it should not be. This amyloid buildup causes these organs to stop working normally. Symptoms of hATTR are varied and include digestive problems, as well as nerve damage that can cause changes in balance and coordination. “hATTR amyloidosis is a rare, and ultimately fatal disease that often affects the nerves, heart and kidneys,” said Daniel Lenihan, M.D., professor of medicine at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and a world-renowned expert on hATTR. “The condition can have multiple symptoms that can seem disconnected, and a genetic test can

confirm diagnosis.” More than 80 percent of rare diseases like hATTR amyloidosis have a genetic link, meaning they are passed down through generations. Greg discovered that hATTR amyloidosis is more common in people with Irish, Portuguese, Japanese, Swedish, French or West African ancestry. Greg had always been proud of his Irish roots, but he was shocked to uncover that the disease may have impacted up to 600 people in his extended family, dating back three centuries to when they came from a small town in Northern Ireland. Knowing that the disease could impact other family members, Greg began to take a closer look at his family tree. Discovering that his grandmother had died young from symptoms similar to his and his brother’s, Greg began to read family journals and delve deeper into the past. “It’s amazing to me that this condition has had such an impact across so many generations of my family, and on other families just like mine,” said Greg. “My ancestors had no idea they were carriers of this gene, but I’m grateful that we know more about it today.” “For the first time, there are now treatment options that can slow hATTR amyloidosis with polyneuropathy from getting worse, and the earlier it is diagnosed the better,” said Dr. Lenihan. “Now, when people are diagnosed with this condition, they have choices in how to manage their symptoms, so it’s more important than ever for people who are at risk to find out whether they have the gene for this condition.” With treatment, Greg is doing much better. “I’m a positive person, and I’m now able to enjoy life just that little bit more now that I know I’m doing everything I can to fight this disease.”— © 2019. How Small Businesses are Mastering the Art of Selling Online Consumer buying habits have changed dramatically over the years. With the rise of online shopping, many small and medium-sized businesses find it difficult to reach customers in the vast ocean of the internet. To succeed online, businesses need a partner to help them reach a national - or even global - customer base, and to support them throughout the process of building their business and fulfilling increasing demand for their products or services. An amazing variety of small and medium-sized businesses now boost online sales by selling in Amazon’s stores, reaching more customers and bringing their business to a whole new level. More than half of the items sold in Amazon’s stores worldwide are from small and medium-sized businesses. And the number of small and medium-sized businesses exceeding $1 million in sales in Amazon’s stores worldwide grew by 20 percent last year, to more than 25,000. When Tara Darnley, co-founder of lifestyle baby brand Darlyng & Co., started selling online in 2015, she initially hesitated to sell in Amazon’s stores, despite being an Amazon customer. However, she changed her mind when she noticed a reseller offering one of their popular products for three times the retail value on Amazon - and selling out. “We knew then that we were leaving money behind by not establishing our brand ourselves on Amazon,” Darnley says. Once Darlyng & Co. moved their business to Amazon, their sales increased instantly. Darnley explains that their products appeal to “parents who are up late in the night with a cranky teething baby and the only time they get a chance to browse the internet is late at night. We actually could not keep up with the demand from Amazon in the beginning. We were getting 100 orders a day.” Darlyng & Co. turned to Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) to help handle their influx of orders. With FBA, businesses store their products in Amazon’s fulfillment centers, so Amazon can pack, ship, and provide customer service for them. Using FBA also makes products Prime eligible, providing members
with free shipping and other benefits. The success of Darlyng & Co. is booming, according to Darnley: “As a result of selling on Amazon we’ve been able to grow our brand globally without the need for a middle person or distributor. We sell on Amazon.com, Amazon.uk and recently Amazon. au, and now our products are more accessible to customers worldwide.” Small businesses are also finding success with Amazon Handmade, where artisans from all 50 states and more than 80 countries offer genuinely handcrafted goods. The owner of John Leslie Studios started selling his handmade jewelry and personalized gifts made from reclaimed wood online in 2014, with moderate success. The Amazon Handmade team approached Leslie in 2015 about being among the first sellers to join the new store. “I hesitated because of the time and effort involved in creating all new listings but, after serious thought, put the work in to create my Amazon Handmade storefront. Best decision I’ve ever made,” says Leslie. His first year in the new store, sales doubled and continue to grow. Leslie describes how quickly things changed: “I saw sales almost immediately since I started at the beginning of the Christmas season. It got so busy that Amazon contacted me because they wanted to make sure I could keep up with the sales volume.” That was the best thing about the online store for him - the personalized support from the Amazon team. Leslie explains, “The greatest thing is that you can request a phone call from the help desk and in minutes you are speaking with a real person who can walk you through your issue.” Leslie recommends Amazon to any small business, saying, “My sales have steadily increased on Amazon year after year. Last year my sales on Amazon alone were over $150,000. Men’s Health Month in June: A time to take action Good Health for Men Often Depends on Wellness Awareness and Early Screenings The statistics for men’s health are alarming. For men, life expectancy is 76.3 years; for women, it’s 81.2 years. The Kaiser Family Foundation points out that nearly 71 percent of men are at risk of being overweight or obese, compared to 59 percent for women. Far more women than men are likely to go to a physician office visit, according to the Centers for Disease Control. These statistics may be worrisome for men and their loved ones, but many of the health risks men face can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle and getting recommended and timely preventive health screenings. “It’s important for men to take charge of their health,” said Dr. Chad E. Bittner, a chief medical officer of OptumCare. “And there are a number of things men can do to get and stay healthy.” Bittner offers the following tips to help men improve their health and well-being: Physical activity: Regardless of gender, Bittner said he gives people the same general health advice, although men often need more reminders. ing heart disease and some cancers, and can improve overall mental health and mood. Nutrition: Another important priority is nutrition. He points out other important reminders for men: Sunscreen: Don’t overlook the importance of using sunscreen. Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in the United States. Prescriptions: All patients need to work with their doctors to get a full understanding of the purpose and side effects of the prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs and supplements they take. Depression: It’s important for men and those close to them to be aware of the warning signs for depression. Small Businesses are Looking Beyond Banks for Loans
Growing a business requires strategy, persistence and money. Even the most successful business owners occasionally need extra cash to expand their operations. However, getting this funding through a bank can be an uphill battle. That was the case for Kate Lester, owner of Kate Lester Interiors, a luxury design firm based in Southern California. After Lester’s business took off, she set her sights on opening a retail space to attract even more clients. “When the perfect space became available on the Pacific Coast Highway,” she said, “we didn’t have all that capital in the bank.” After reviewing her finances, she decided to apply for a bank loan. Despite being a longtime customer, and having excellent credit and zero debt, she was denied. Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence for small-business owners across the country. According to a 2018 Fed Small Business Survey, nearly one in two small-business owners struggle to get the financing they need to expand and pursue new opportunities. That’s largely because banks are still ignoring small businesses, despite their contribution to the economy. A new report from Oxford Economics shows that: * Small businesses are responsible for 60% of all jobs in industrialized countries * And yet, in the United States, loans to small businesses make up only 0.7% of banks’ balance sheets * Only 13% of business owners who applied for a commercial loan of $25,000 to $100,000 from a bank received at least half the money they asked for Continued neglect from big banks is leading
small-business owners to seek alternatives. After being rejected by her bank, Lester called Funding Circle, an online small-business loans platform that connects business owners who need capital with investors willing to provide it. “We thought it would be a longer process because of what happened when we went to our bank,” she said. “I spent eight hours on the phone with my bank just trying to get someone to talk to me.” Banks are notorious for having tedious loan application processes and lengthy turnaround times. Compiling paperwork for an application can take multiple days, and business owners often have to wait another several weeks or months just to receive a response. Online credit providers, on the other hand, pride themselves on offering faster, simpler financing to small businesses without sacrificing on affordability. For business owners like Lester, maximizing time and resources is crucial. “Time is something that’s super valuable to me,” she said. “For me to go to a bank, and maybe get one or two points difference in the interest rate, wasn’t worth all the back and forth it would have required.” Today, Lester’s sales are up 150% after receiving a loan from Funding Circle in 2017. Her story, while remarkable, isn’t exceptional. Online providers are driving growth and profits for millions of small businesses in the U.S., in turn creating more jobs and boosting the economy.
