Editor’s Note Greetings!

As editor, I am pleased to present to you the 2021 Rural Leader Forty under Forty Honorees. The judges, once more, had the difficult task to select forty outstanding leaders from Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. The leaders represent the rich talent, skill, and vast knowledge that can be found in small town America. Again, I was extremely impressed with the level of expertise and accomplishment found among this year's honorees. Their exemplary service to the people in small communities is a testament to their dedication. Without such leaders, who pour daily back into the essence of communities abroad, Small Town America would undoubtedly cease to thrive. Therefore, I continue to be committed to acknowledging the efforts and contributions of leaders in small rural communities. I understand all too well the significance of their efforts. My hope is that the Forty under 40 Honors encourage young leaders in the knowledge that what they do each day matters. Age: 31 Hometown: Thomasville, Georgia Profession: Business/Finance/Organizational Leadership/Political Science Ryan is a native of Thomasville, Georgia. In 2018, Ryan earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Leadership at Valdosta State University (GA). He has held a diverse range of positions that developed his character. He is firm, assertive, honest, and responsible. As a leader, he has had the opportunity to interact with individuals from every gamut of life. Ryan has an unparalleled hunger for excellence. He has served as a consultant and policy advisor for several organizations. Ryan has served as a consultant for Parkes Philanthropy in New York, since June 2020. As a consultant, Ryan consults in the areas of fundraising, grant making, impact investing, government affairs, donor advised funds, and corporate social responsibility. Ryan also worked for the Biden for President Campaign in community engagement from June 2019- September 2020. President Biden acknowledged Ryan’s dedication for doing the crucial work of organizing communities to be actively engaged in the civic process. He was also a Legislative Policy Advisor for the

Georgia General Assembly House of Representatives from January 2019 until June 2020. Ryan served as the Policy Advisor for Representative David Wilkerson HD 38. He also served a bi-partisan delegation of Cobb County legislators that included fifteen representatives and six senators. As a legislative policy advisor, Ryan collected, analyzed, and advised the committee and Wilkerson with relevant information regarding education, public safety, transportation, and other state legislation affecting Cobb County, Georgia. He also drafted local legislation for Cobb County, provided district cost-benefit analysis of legislative priorities and strategic direction regarding house and senate legislation; Ryan also coordinated hearings, press conferences, community events, and legislative delegation site visits. Ryan also served as a Senior Staff Assistant for the Georgia Legislative Black Caucasus, Inc. from 20182019. In this role, he served as one of two event coordinators for the Annual Heritage Dinner hosted in the Georgia World Congress Center. He worked with 65 minority state legislators. During his tenure,

Ryan raised $300,000 for the Georgia Legislative Black Caucasus. Ryan served as Interim Director of Operations for the BVM Capacity Building Institute From August 2018-January 2019. He developed statewide engagement and campaign plans and cultivated relationships with local community groups, volunteers, unions, and allies. Ryan also managed direct voter and constituent field activities; he also assisted in member recruitment and fundraising activities; and he coordinated campaign operations within seven states, including Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Louisiana. Ryan served as the Interim State Organizing Director for Georgia Shift from May 2018-August 2018. As Interim State Organizing Director, Ryan directed all field and issue organizing campaigns, managed fellows executing the programs, including statewide voter registration, high school registration, voter turnout, and volunteer programs. He developed and implemented curriculum and programming for the inaugural fellowship program. Ryan redefined student and campus engagement strategies. As a result of his leadership, Georgia Shift doubled statewide youth voter turnout from 13% during the 2014 midterms to 33% during the 2018 midterms. Ryan served as a Legislative Aide in the Georgia General Assembly House of Representatives for Representative Dar’shun Kendrick HD 93-Lithonia from January 2018-April 2018. Ryan provided the district, which included over 54,000 constituents, with resources, opportunities, and the latest information regarding legislation. Ryan successfully navigated House Resolution (HR) 944 to adoption, which is a resolution opposing human trafficking and illegal organ harvesting. Ryan also served as a Membership Services Coordinator for the Association for Institutional Research (AIR) from 2014-2017. In this role, Ryan worked with members and higher-education institutions on the international, national, regional, state, and local levels. He also served as project manager for their Data & Decisions® Academy, a $2 million professional development academy funded by the Lumina Foundation. Ryan also managed professional development cohorts in South Africa, Taiwan, and Europe. During his tenure, Ryan awarded 104 professional development scholarships valued at $145,600.00. Ryan served as the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Georgia Assistant District Director for the Greater Atlanta Area from 2010-2012. As Assistant Director, Ryan governed 1,200 members within 39 chapters in the District of Georgia. He presided over business sessions of 750-1000+ in attendance, during annual conferences. In this role, Ryan served approximately 8,000 Georgians through coordination of six national programs. He planned and executed regional and state-wide weekend leadership summits for approximately 1,300+ college students from seven states. He also served as district officer to six state conferences in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Alabama. As Assistant Director, Ryan awarded a total of $4,200.00 in book scholarships to 12 full-time/ first-time women of color students. He developed and initiated a $47,000+ endowment with Valdosta State University Foundation in the name of Alpha Phi Alpha. He also raised over $117,000.00 between 2010-2013 via an annual event with average yearly attendance of 3,700+ students and community members. Ryan is the co-founder of Equity in Action, Incorporated and Managing Partner of Brown Capital Partners Wealth Management Firm. Equity in Action, Inc., is a 501 (c)4 social welfare nonprofit with a mission to bring equity to those in the deep south who have been most impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and other contributing causes. Equity in Action provides access to equitable outcomes for underserved and underrepresented populations in rural communities.—

Jeremy A. Gray Age: 35 Hometown: Opelika, AL Profession: Business| State Government | Commuity Organizer

Jeremy Gray was born in Opelika, Alabama. He is a highly skilled and dedicated professional with over five years of experience elevating the lives of people and the community. He enjoys cultivating ideas and transforming them into tangible products. Jeremy loves bringing out the best in others and bringing individuals together for the common good. Jeremy graduated from Opelika High School. He then attended North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in sports management in 2008. In October 2014, he became a small business owner and founded Elevate Your Grind Incorporated, which is also known as EYG. The mission of EYG is to empower people to achieve goals, turn obstacles into accomplishments, and to reach one’s full potential. Jeremy built the EYG brand from ground zero to a highly sophisticated e-commerce business. Jeremy was a professional football athlete from 2010-2015. He exhibited excellent teamwork and strong work ethic by promoting camaraderie.

He helped new team members acclimate to procedures and collaborated with fellow athletes to enhance competitive performances. He effectively communicated with diverse groups of athletes, coaches, and game officials. In October 2016, Jeremy founded the Curtis House in Opelika, Alabama. The Curtis House is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community service facility led by the Curtis family, creating a haven for the elderly, adults, and children. As Founder, Jeremy introduced a new matrix organizational plan with clear roles and responsibilities to enhance processes while ensuring quality and regulatory compliance. He also aligned organizational objectives with the company mission, increasing fundraising efforts and solidifying community partnerships with the Third Lens Ministry and Auburn Building Science. In November 2018, Jeremy was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives, representing District 83. He currently holds this position. In this role, Jeremy writes, proposes, and votes on legislation for state government. He also meets with

He also works with other lawmakers to establish annual ETF and general fund budgets for the State of Alabama. Jeremy also serves as the Minority Whip. In this role, Jeremy resolves conflicts and negotiates mutually beneficial agreements between parties. Jeremy is extremely involved and engaged in his community and throughout Alabama. He serves currently as the President of Lee County Voters League. He is also a member of the Center for the Advancement of Leadership Skills that is also known as CALS. He is the health committee chair for the 100 Black Men of Greater Opelika-Auburn. Jeremy is also a member of the NAACP Lee County Chapter, Community of Hope Advisory Committee, the Statewide Health Coordinating Council appointed by Gov. Kay Ivey, Opelika High School Career Tech Committee, the Black Male Summit Advisory Committee, the Alabama House

of Representatives Lee County Delegation, the LeeRussell Council of Governments Advisory, and the Innovate Alabama Commission. He is also a proud Alum of the Opelika Chamber of Commerce 20 Under 40. Jeremy has received several awards throughout his career for his leadership and community service. In 2018, he was awarded several awards including the Alpha Kappa Alpha Humanitarian Award and the Golden Rule Lodge Community Involvement Award. In 2019, Jeremy was awarded the Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Achiever Award and the Wire-Grass RC&D Outstanding Partner of the Year Award. In 2020, he was awarded the AUBGPSA Humanitarian Award. Jeremy is currently enrolled at Auburn University (AL) in the Harbert College of Business pursuing an Executive Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Leadership.—

Victoria is a native of Albany, Georgia. She is a retired high school economics teacher, who enjoys ministering, investing, teaching, and traveling the world. She coined the phrase and lives by the motto, “You can learn your way out of every situation and on to any destination.” In 2004, Victoria earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics at Spelman College (GA). In 2011, she earned a master’s degree in economics at Albany State University (GA) and a master’s degree in post-secondary education at Troy University (AL). Victoria is also a 2017 graduate of Leadership Albany and a 2020/2021 Albany Under 40 awardee and category finalist. She is married and a proud mother of two wonderful children. Deemed as one of the most anointed, exhilarating, and empowering educators of her time, Victoria is also known as Victoria I. Phoenix (V. I. P). She is highly lauded and esteemed. She is not only a master teacher but also a published author, columnist, and certified trainer. Victoria is also recognized for her phenomenal speaking presence, expertise and instructional

Liza Pugh-Nicholson is a native of Coffeeville, Alabama. She attended the University of West Alabama and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. She later earned her Master of Science degree in Healthcare Management from Troy University and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Public Health with a focus on Health Management and Policy from Samford University (AL). Her passion is to reduce health disparities and to improve healthcare access and quality the vulnerable rural populations. Liza is the founder and CEO of Avail Management Services, an innovative consulting company with a mission to transform healthcare by improving quality and to enhance patient and staff experience, while reducing cost and health inequity. Through Avail Management Services, Liza provides project management consulting services to healthcare organizations throughout the United States and in India. She provides support to maximize reimbursements and to deliver quality patient care. Liza empowers clinicians, medical teams, and healthcare systems to offer culturally

competent care via a digital platform known as All Rize. She created the concept and platform that is dedicated to promoting positive news and experiences of African American people and culture. The All Rize platform consists of inspiring articles and stories from that highlight leaders, authors, artists, businesses, and resources. Liza is a highly lauded professional. In 2019, she was named among Tuscaloosa News’ 40 under 40 Business Professionals. She was awarded the North American Primary Care Research Group Scholarship from 2017-2019. Chanisha is certified in middle grades Language and Social Science. She has a range of technology skills in Microsoft Suite, Google, Apple, Windows, and Instructional Technology Software. She served as the Day Care Lead Teacher at the First Steps Day Cener in Cuthbert. As Lead Teacher, Chanisha planned and implemented an infant curriculum and tracked and completed daily charts and reports for children among other duties. In 2018, he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Fort Valley State University. In 2021, Burks earned his master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health from FVSU.

Victoria Coleman, 32

In 2018, Victoria made local history by becoming the first ever female firefighter in the Cuthbert Fire Department. In twelve weeks, she successfully completed the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth, Georgia. As a firefighter, Victoria protects citizens during emergencies. She also works with the local community to increase awareness of fire safety. In this role, Victoria is also responsible for promoting fire safety standards by conducting practice drills and other trainings in public and commercial premises. Victoria has spent her life giving back and engaging with community in various ways. In her spare time, she plays adult softball, kickball, and volleyball. She loves to decorate, remodel homes, and repair cars. Victoria also volunteers with the American Red Cross. —

Sometime later, she founded her church, Love Outreach Ministry in Havana. As Founder and Pastor, Cynthia wanted the name to mean something to the community and its members. The church’s name was God-inspired: L stands for loyalty; O for overcoming; V for victorious; and E for everlasting. Her vision and mission are to bring jobs, shelter, a food distribution center, support, a biblical school, and love to her community. Pastor McGriff has always placed God and ministry foremost. She has six years of experience in all elements of organizational leadership. As Pastor, Cynthia oversees administration and management of all areas of ministry. She also plans, leads, conducts worship services, writes sermons, and works with key church leaders to carry out the church mission. Corey B. Morgan, 26

Hometown: Camilla, GA Profession: Local Government/ Higher Education Corey Morgan is a graduate of Pelham High School (GA). In 2017, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Arts Studies with a minor in Psychology from LaGrange College (GA). He serves as an active member of the Public Works, Public Safety, and Recreation committees. Currently, Corey serves in several capacities at Albany State University. Albany State University is a four-year, state-supported, historically black university located in Albany, Georgia, United States. It is the largest of three HBCUs in the University System of Georgia. ASU’s total undergraduate enrollment is 6,600 and 353 graduate students. Corey serves as the Associate Director of Recruitment, the Campus Visitor Coordinator, and the Admissions Recruiter. Corey is also very involved in the community and professionally. Hometown: Americus, GA Profession: Education Crystal Perry is a Public Service Associate with the University of Georgia and has served as a County Extension Agent for the 4-H program in Sumter County, Georgia for the past seven years. Before joining UGA Extension, Crystal worked with youth placed in the juvenile justice system. She is passionate about serving vulnerable populations. In 2006, Crystal earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education at Georgia Southwester State University in Americus, GA. In 2008, Crystal earned a Master of Public Administration degree in Educational Leadership Health Services at the Columbus State University (GA). In 2021, she earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Human Services Specialization: Family Studies and Intervention Strategies at Walden University (MN). Her dissertation was entitled, “Extension Youth Development Professionals’ Experiences Implementing Inclusive Youth Development Programming.” Crystal’s background spans the professions of youth development, administration, and public health with a specific interest in family studies and intervention strategies.
