Editor’s Note Greetings! As editor, I am pleased to present to you the 2023 Rural Leader Forty under Forty Honorees. The judges, once more, had the difficult task to select forty outstanding leaders from Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. The leaders represent the rich talent, skill, and vast knowledge that can be found in small town America. Again, I was extremely impressed with the level of expertise and accomplishment found among this year's honorees. Their exemplary service to the people in small communities is a testament to their dedication. Without such leaders, who pour daily back into the essence of communities abroad, Small Town America would undoubtedly cease to thrive. Therefore, I continue to be committed to acknowledging the efforts and contributions of leaders in small rural communities. I understand all too well the significance of their efforts. My hope is that the Forty under 40 Honorees encourage young leaders in the knowledge that what they do each day matters. Aunquarius Brown Age: 22 Hometown: Albany, Georgia Profession: Author | Life Coach| News Media
Aunquarius is an author, model, life coach, and upcoming news broadcaster. He is a 2018 graduate of Dougherty High. In 2022, he earned an Associate of Arts degree in Multi-Interdisciplinary Studies and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications both at Albany State University (GA). In 2022, Aunquarius also launched his own company, Banderas Media. BM is an affiliate under the National Association of Black Journalist (NABJ) that creates engaging media for creative client presentations. Aunquarius is the author of several books. His most recent book entitled, “Being Here” explores his early life to the present and the lessons he has learned. He hopes that his story inspires others to live to their fullest potential. In addition to being an author, Aunquarius is also the founder of Uplift, a nonprofit organization with a mission to help people, especially youth in need.
He is also a Certified Life Coach, who earned certification at the Life Coaching Institute of America in San Antonio, TX. He is also an experienced counselor, proficient in individual and group therapy method with three years of mental health experience. Aunquarius has been awarded for his many accomplishments. He is a three-time recipient of the Youth of the Year Award for the Boys and Girls Club of Albany (GA), a two-time recipient (2019 and 2021) of the National Society of Scholastic People-Journalist Award, and an Albany (GA) 20 under 20 Nominee. He also served as president of the Youth of the Year Coalition, and he has also been featured as a model in American Eagle, Samsung, Steve Madden, and many other brands.—

Ashleigh C. Geurin Age:27 Hometown: Moultrie, Georgia Profession: Family and Consumer Sciences
A native of Colquitt County, Georgia, Ashleigh attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and received an Associate of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences (2016). In 2017, she attended the University of Georgia and earned a Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences Education with an emphasis in foods and nutrition. Ashleigh knew early in life that she wanted to share her passion for nutrition and health education with others and Cooperative Extension was the perfect way to share her passion. In 2019, she became the Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) Extension Agent in Thomas County, Georgia while simultaneously completing her Master of Science degree in Community Nutrition from the University of Georgia. Ashleigh is very involved in her community. She is currently the president of the Georgia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (GAFCS). She is also a member of the Epsilon Sigma Phi, Alpha Beta Chapter (Extension Professional Association) and the Southeast District Junior Director for Georgia Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (GEAFCS). She also served on the 20212022 UGA College of Family and Consumer Sciences Alumni Board of Directors. She has received several awards and prestigious appointments because of her hard work and dedication. Ashleigh was selected to serve on the UGA Extension
State Family and Consumer Sciences Foods and Nutrition Leadership Team. She was also selected to serve on the UGA Extension State FACS Needs Assessment Committee. Ashleigh also served on the nationally recognized Healthy Georgia Wellness Curriculum Development Team. Ashleigh is a 2022 recipient of the National New Achiever Award by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS). She is also a recipient of the Georgia Outstanding Family and Consumer Sciences Professional Award. Ashleigh placed third in 2022 for both the Southern Region Winner for Educational Curriculum Package (NEAFCS) and the Southern Region Winner for Innovative Youth Development Programming. She placed first in Georgia for the Innovative Youth Development Program Award (GEAFCS). In 2022, she moved to Statesboro, Georgia to marry the love of her life and to serve as the Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) Extension Agent for Candler and Evans counties. She enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband, Shane, and their chocolate lab, Moose. Ashleigh Geurin currently serves as the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) County Extension Agent for Candler and Evans Counties in Georgia. —

Dr. Quianna C. Lavant Age: 29 Hometown: Albany, Georgia Profession: Education Quianna is an Albany, GA native and knew at an early age that her purpose was to serve her community. She currently works as a Senior Talent Acquisition Coordinator for Deloitte but has previously held multiple roles within Higher Education at Clark Atlanta University, Mercer University, and Florida A&M University. She is an alumna of Savannah State University, Georgia Southern University, and now Clark Atlanta University earning her Doctorate of Higher Education Leadership. Dr. Lavant being a first-generation college graduate decided to focus her study on ways in which the first-gen population can be better served in their pursuit of post-secondary education. Her dissertation topic was, A Different World: Aiding First-Generation College Students in Their Persistence. As a first-generation college student, she has committed herself to finding effective resources that
assist other first-generation college students and minorities. Dr. Lavant is a former TEDx Savannah Speaker and Executive Producer of TEDx Chandlers Creek. TEDx being directly affiliated with TED Talks, Dr. Lavant’s topic during her TEDx Savannah speech was Bridging the Gap: Educators Can Make a Difference. She believes that all students deserve a champion, an advocate, and adequate resources. Through mentorship, community engagement, and partnership, she believes this can be achieved. Through her connections within Higher Education, the Dougherty County School System, the Junior League of Albany, and church affiliation with Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church of Oakfield, Georgia, she has been able to reach students in need and assist them as needed.—

Age: 24 Hometown: Albany, Georgia
Profession:Education| Founder/Operator of The X for Boys Life Preparatory School Passionate about the growth and development of boys to men, King Randall stands out for his success in empowering boys to be stand-up members of the community and society. A former United States Marine, King Randall, was alarmed by the high level of crime in his hometown. The young offenders were mainly black males as young as eleven years old. This inspired a spark in him to be the change the community needed. To be the role model these young men were missing in their lives. With a dream so passionate for young people, King Randall, the Founder of The X for Boys program, has received numerous compliments for his transformational program. Founded in 2019, The X for Boys program is the only rehabilitative program for juvenile offenders in South Georgia. The program teaches skilled trades such as automotive repair, general contracting, firearms training, literacy, etc. The program has a .01% recidivism rate, 82% proficiency in General contracting, 86% Increase in Reading Comprehension, 91% improvement in Grades amongst participants, and 93% proficiency in automotive repair. A high achiever in his own right, King Randall, has always been chasing his goals and dreams, defying all odds to accomplish what he sets out. His knack for results and pursuit of excellence saw him named the 2022 Honor Thy Father Award Recipient. He has received other awards and recognition, such as the 2016 Georgia Restaurant Association Student of the Year, 2017 Culinary School Graduate at the age of 17, 2019 Larry Sanders Legacy Award Recipient, 2021 B1 Education Award Recipient, and 2023
Dreamstone Award recipient from the Family of Dr. MLK, Jr. Having found his calling in mentoring boys to men, King Randall has been passionate about making positive changes in the education industry and making a difference in these young men's lives. With over half a decade of experience in the industry, King Randall understands the role he plays in the growth and development of these young men's minds and lives. He is reputable for his unwavering commitment, passion, and self-driven attitude in delivering on his mandate. His competency lies in his ability to listen to his students attentively and intuitively understand their problems, his disciplined way to meet timelines, and his courageous way of articulating his thoughts. He is complimented most for being a good communicator with nuggets of wisdom and advice to the young men. In August 2022, King Randall opened the doors to his most ambitious project, The Life Preparatory School for Boys. This is the first, free, all-boys boarding school in South Georgia. A culinary school graduate, he attests that his profession's success has opened doors for him. He is keen on teaching these practical life skills to his young mentees and learn the trade to make successful careers. The school’s motto is "Let Us Make Man," which is a true testament to what he has got going on in the institution. At 23 years old, King Randall is the perfect example of what hard work, determination, and success can be like for these young men.—

However, Haven found his niche in boxing at the age of 12. Excelling at this sport, featherweight pugilist Haven proclaimed himself “The Hitman.” He adopted the same nickname as professional boxer Thomas Hearns since they both have similar boxing styles. His boxing career, thus far, has been quite impressive. As a pro, Haven fought live on ESPN +. He is currently 9 and 0 with 4 knock outs. As an amateur before becoming pro, Haven’s record was 65-10 with 30 knockouts. In 2019, at the Junior Olympics, Eastern Qualifiers and National Police Athletic/Activities Leagues, Inc. (PAL) tournaments, Haven won several gold medals. He also has 3 national titles, 12 state titles and 25 championships belts. In addition, Haven has also received several awards, such as No. #1 in the Nation at 132 pounds in 2019, No. #1 in winning percentages in 2019 -2020, and Georgia Youth Boxer of the Year in 2019. Byron Jerome Burton, 38 Hometown: Buena Vista, GA Profession: Entrepreneur Byron is a native of Buena Vista, Georgia. In 2014, Bryon began his career with Trane Commercial. After three years, he decided it was time for a change, so he began a new journey with Stellar. While at Stellar, Bryon was responsible for design, engineering, construction, and mechanical services. After much consideration, Bryon decided to start his own
Columbus Carter, III, 29 Hometown: Valdosta, GA Profession: Education Columbus Carter earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Middle Grades Education (Math and Social Science) at Albany State University (GA). He earned a Master of Education (STEM) in Curriculum and Instruction at Georgia Southern University. Columbus Carter is an instructional leader and 4th Grade math content leader at Pinevalle Elementary School in Valdosta, Georgia. He has always taken pride in not only increasing his professional knowledge, but also in leading his colleagues in the understanding of the standards and the delivery of quality instruction in a way that is simple for students to understand. In his capacity as an instructional leader, Columbus seizes every opportunity to learn more about teaching. He is a vital part of the professional learning community as he readily applies knowledge to
practice. Columbus brings credence to the adage, “in order to lead, one must serve.” He has a passion for student success that has led him to serve as a co-teacher for students with disabilities. He also sets high expectations for all his students and provides support in the form of encouragement, appropriate interventions, and positive parental relationships. Columbus also teaches in Pinevale’s AdventureQuest after school program and summer school. He goes above and beyond by connecting with students as a mentor. He also supports students in their interests outside of school as he attends their sports events and serves them in his capacity as a staff member of the Boys and Girls Club of Valdosta. Columbus also serves on Pinevale Elementary School’s PBIS committee and Leadership Team. He teaches, inspires, and encourages students to greatness through his content knowledge, use of appropriate pedagogy and strategies, mixed with humor, respect, and a fervent desire for them to excel. He serves tirelessly with passion, love, enthusiasm, and an attitude of excellence. He is also a member of the Professional Associates of Georgia Teachers, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and the Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics.—

Travis Crafter, 37 Hometown: Thomaston, GA Profession: Licensed Professional Counselor Travis Crafter is a Licensed Professional Counselor who joined the Georgia Rural Health Innovation Center (GRHIC) in September of 2022 and serves as a Community Resources and Assessment Specialist. While at the GRHIC, Travis joined the Pediatric Mental Health Initiative (PMHI) team. PMHI connects children in rural Georgia to free mental health counseling via telehealth. Additionally, he assists the Christopher Wolf Crusade life care specialist curriculum development team in addressing the growing opioid crisis. He serves on the Expanding Behavioral and Mental Health Support team through the partnership with Mercer University School of Medicine and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. As a provisionally certified Community Resiliency Model (CRM) trainer, along with a cotrainer, he offers CRM workshops to diverse audiences, i.e., future medical providers, educators, community members, etc., to help individuals use biological-based wellness skills to regulate their nervous systems. He’s a native of Upson County,
Georgia, and received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, minoring in Religious Studies, from Georgia State University and a Master of Arts from the University of Central Florida. In his previous roles at Georgia Southwestern State University, he developed mental health programs, i.e., CARES@GSW, and co-developed the Brotherhood Living and Learning Community, which aims to increase the graduation rate and improve retention of African American males. He remains a mentor and advisor to the Brotherhood, LLC. His interest in the helping profession was born out of an innate and nurtured desire to serve others. This Fall, Travis commences his doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision at Mercer University. He is an active member in his local church, Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, located in Thomaston, GA, where he serves as an elder. He volunteers with Dissipating Disparities Inc., a nonprofit organization focused on dissipating disparities among minorities in various areas, including educational, social, financial, and mental/physical health issues. He serves on the Justifying Our Youth Community Development Program board as the Community Affairs Advisor and Activities Coordinator. Justifying Our Youth Community Development Program through community services, education, character development, activities, and partnerships within the communities seeks to meet the needs of and create pathways to success for at-risk and disadvantaged youth. Travis’ hobbies include hiking, reading, meditation, and above all quality time doing life with his Queen and forever plus one, his wife, La’Sheka. His areas of professional interest include

Kendarius Clark, 26 Hometown: Fort Gaines, GA Profession: Law Enforcement Kendarius is a 2015 graduate of Randolph-Clay High School (GA). While in high school, he discovered his love for working with his hands. He was a member of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter. After completing high school, Kendarius attended Albany Technical College (GA) where he studied criminal justice. In 2015, he earned certification in ATC’s Homeland Security Program. Later, Kendarius enrolled in the Georgia Public Safety Training Center (GPSTC) in Tifton, Georgia. During the 13-week program, he received basic law enforcement training and earned the Top Gun Award. Kendarius graduated from the SPSTC in 2015. He has served as an officer at the Fort Gaines Police Department (GA) for the past seven years. In his spare time, Kendarius enjoys fishing and hunting. He currently resides in Fort Gaines, Georgia. —

Jimmy Daniels, 34 Hometown: Oglethorpe, GA Profession: Educator| Community Leader Jimmy Daniels, Jr. is a native of Macon County, GA. He is the 4th child of seven and enjoys reading, hunting, fishing, coaching, being an advocate for kids, and helping others. Jimmy is a 2008 graduate of Macon County High School. In 2010, he graduated with his associate degree from Reedley Community College. Jimmy earned a bachelor’s degree from Alabama State University in 2013, and a master’s degree from Georgia College and State University in 2021. Jimmy is a teacher, mentor, CEO, ESE Advocate, motivational speaker, city councilman, and

His athleticism earned him a full scholarship to Alabama State University to play football, where he received honorable mention and All-American awards. He was named MVP of the Magic City Classic in Birmingham, Alabama. After graduating college in 2013, Jimmy continued his football career on a professional level when he was signed to the Green Bay Blizzards, an arena football team in Green Bay, Wisconsin. After playing a year, he moved back home to teach at “The” Macon County Middle School. He began his mentoring program E.P.I.C.-Encouraging Positive Inspiring Careers and is based in two counties. He is also the founder and sponsor of the first Macon County Middle Schools boys club known as G.E.N.T.S. that stands for Growing Evolving Nurturing Teenagers. Jimmy is also the head middle school football coach, and the head Macon County High School Girls’ Varsity Basketball Coach. Finally, he currently co-teaches middle school earth science, language arts, and social studies.—
activity for the residents of Stewart County. Garner led a team in installing nearly 900 square feet of planting space in 41 raised garden beds which have produced over 2,000 pounds of produce. Along with increasing the environmental and social capital for healthier living, Christina teaches health and nutrition classes showing improved health behaviors among program participants, both youth and adults. As a leader, she focuses on fundraising and fund development through grants and sponsorships. Christina has been very successful in generating $242,920 for programming and youth scholarships and managing a total of $447,553 in local funding. Her reputation and expertise on healthy living, literacy and youth development are well known throughout UGA Extension with recognition at the state and national levels. —
Christina Garner, 30 Hometown: Taylorsville, GA Profession: Family and Consumer Sciences Christina serves as the Extension Coordinator and Family and Consumer Sciences agent in Stewart County, Georgia. She is focused on making a difference in one of the most impoverished and health challenged counties in the state of Georgia. She has taken a very holistic program approach, not only offering educational programs in schools and communities, but also building social and environmental capital and engaging community members in coalitions and work groups. Christina works hard to form meaningful partnerships across departments and units of the University System of Georgia, outside agencies, and other institutions of higher learning for the benefit of her community. Nichelle Loud, 35 Hometown: Albany, GA Profession: Entrepreneur | Healthcare Nichelle Loud is a native of Albany, GA. She is the oldest of two siblings. Nichelle is a graduate of Westover High School (GA). She earned an associate degree in journalism at Darton College (GA). Nichelle studied psychology with a specialist in addiction counseling at Walden University (MN). She is a Certified Chemical Addiction Counselor and peer specialist. Nichelle was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus and did not know much about the disease as no one in her family had ever been diagnosed. She was in denial and had the test repeated three times and received three positive diagnosis confirmations. The diagnosis sent her into a state of depression. She had no idea how to handle it, and she was afraid to die. There were days when she was in so much pain that she could not walk. At that time, Nichelle had to endure chronic labs-meaning that her blood was to be drawn and tested once per week. She did not have health insurance and her health care was expensive. Nichelle began working for a local hospital and obtained better insurance, but not better care. In her viewpoint, it seemed the only time that her labs were drawn and processed

correctly was when she went to the appointment wearing her uniform and name badge. This bothered her and added to her depression. However, she knew that she was not the only person who had experienced healthcare discrimination in some capacity, so she went back to school for biology and received additional certifications. Later, Nichelle created 818 Diagnostic Solutions, a full-service clinical reference laboratory. The testing suite is composed of over 1,000 tests. 818 Diagnostic Solutions offers occupational testing, cardiac Holter monitor placement, and other services. From a young age, Mallory understood the importance of medicine in treating illnesses and improving quality of life. She found satisfaction in opportunities to be a part of something that extended beyond herself. Bringing together two of her greatest passions, she made a personal mission to help bring optimal care to the underserved and vulnerable.

Mallory was certain a career in pharmacy would help her achieve this mission. Since then, she has worked hard to cultivate a responsible, confident, dignified nature. Through years of continued education, she developed a great deal of stamina, and she now has the physical and mental endurance needed to spend hours studying, reading, researching, or working on projects until the task at hand is complete. Mallory is always ready to entertain ideas about the best ways to reach a goal, increase productivity, or solve a problem. Furthermore,
she is always ready to perform to standards outlined and to invent innovative processes that make it easier for others to perform tasks. In addition to performing well as an individual, Mallory also rises to the occasion when tasked with working in teams. She currently works as a clinical pharmacist at Zuni Comprehensive Community Health Center in Zuni, NM. Mallory provides medical and public health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives. Not only does she offer ambulatory care services in the outpatient department, but she also provides comprehensive services in the general inpatient medical center as well. Mallory is also a clinic coordinator for anticoagulation, diabetes, and basic tobacco intervention skills. When she is not assisting patients, she can be found carrying out her role as chair for the Infectious Disease Committee. She believes that it is her duty to perform hand hygiene audits to ensure all staff are following policies and procedures outlined by the facility. In her spare time, Mallory enjoys reading, watching movies, trying new restaurants, learning a new skill, writing, and spending quality time with friends and family. One day, she hopes to be a published author. Since moving to New Mexico, she has written the first book of a threepart fictional romance series. Currently, she is writing the second book and hopes to publish the completed trilogy soon.—

Ashely Rowe, 39 Hometown: Pensacola, FL Profession: Human Resource Management Ashely is a 2008 graduate of Robert Morris University (IL), where she earned a Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) in Graphic Design. While at Robert Morris University, Ashely was member of the Women’s Basketball Team. Also in 2008, she earned a master’s degree in management and organizational behavior at Benedictine University (IL). Ashely is an experienced staffing specialist with a demonstrated history of working in the staffing and recruiting industry. She is also skilled in customer service management, classroom management, corporate recruiting, sales management, and instructional design. Ashely is also a strong human resource professional. Ashley is a proud member of the Central Illinois Chapter Society for Human Resource Management (CIS SHRM) and the National Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). She is currently the Contract Team Lead for Thomas Thor. Marion Thomas, 34 Hometown: Cuthbert, GA Profession: Entrepreneur Marion is a 2007 graduate of Randolph Clay High School (GA). He has always been passionate about starting a business. In 2022, Marion launched Plamo Juice. He often showcases his products at various trade shows, festivals, and personal events. In the future, Marion plans to distribute his products nationwide. Akeshia Valrie, 33 Hometown: Hinesville, GA Profession: Education Akeshia earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology (2008) and a master’s degree in education School Counseling in 2016 both from Troy University (AL). She is now an eight-year veteran in education with Russell County School District (AL). Akeshia is currently a high school counselor who serves 11-12th grade students. She has worked as a counselor both in elementary and high school settings. As a counselor, Akeshia assists students with their social/ emotional and academic needs and assists them with scholarships, resumes, and even financial aid. Akeshia also enjoys working with high school students during college/career fairs, college visits, and workshops. She believes every student has the potential to be successful and wants to provide each of them the necessary support. In the future, Akeshia plans to continue making a difference in her community by collaborating with local agencies that offer resources that can help her students. Rachel Wood, 38 Hometown: Albany, GA Profession: Entrepreneur| Customer Service Specialist Rachel Wood considers her smile as her trademark because she loves greeting others with a smile. She is a graduate of Darsey Private High School (GA). She earned an associate degree in business administration at Albany Technical College (GA). Rachel is the chief executive officer for Southern Strawberry Boutique in Albany, Georgia. SS Boutique is a shop with unique attire for women and girls. Rachel is also a knowledgeable and dedicated customer service professional with extensive experience in the service industry. Customer service is important to Rachel and has always been a priority throughout her career. She is currently the front desk associate with Albany Internal Medicine (GA). Rachel enjoys sharing the love of Jesus with others daily. Her mission to live by example. She reminds others that it is never too late to be great and to put God first.
