Terrebonne Parish Library System is excited to announce its latest arts program, an all-ages, family-friendly activity called Splatter Works. The goal of this program is to allow all skill levels and abilities the chance to participate in a non-traditional artistic experience. Splatter Works will include tactile, movement-based projects that will explore unique ways to create. Participants will be exposed to art that uses many unconventional mediums and tools, such as spray bottles, plungers, water balloons, and even their own feet. Patrons should wear clothes they do not mind dirtying up. Splatter Works is made possible through a grant from the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation. EVERY MONDAY IN JULY, 5:30 P.M. HEALTHY BITES WITH TGMC | BY R.J. ARNOTT, DIETETIC INTERN AND MICHELLE BRICENO, MS, RD, LDN

STONE FRUIT

CHERRY BREAKFAST “COOKIES”

A stone fruit is any fruit with a pit, such as peaches, plums, and cherries. Stone fruit can also be called a drupe. These fruits can be a very fun addition to your summer dishes including salsas, peaches and cream, sauces, and many other easy recipes. They provide a colorful and tasty option that can spark up the simplest dishes and serve as a great addition to your diet in many ways. Stone fruits provide a healthy snack option that is nutritious and delicious. Cherries, plums, and peaches are high in vitamin C, which helps keep our immune system strong. Cherries and peaches are a good source of fiber to help our digestive tract and keep us feeling fuller. Some stone fruits, such as mangoes and nectarines, are a good source of vitamin A, which has been shown to be beneficial for eye and skin health. Adding various stone fruits to your meals is a great way to make sure you eat the recommended two cups of fruits

SYNERGY BANK PRESENTS SYNERGY CENTS WITH PENNY D. PELICAN

SETTING A

SAVINGS GOAL Have you ever wanted to buy something but didn’t have enough money? Maybe you wanted a new pair shoes or a new game console? In order to buy an item you don’t have enough money for, you may have to save your money for several months or even years. The best way to save for something is by first setting a savings goal. A savings goal is the amount of money you plan to save each time you earn income. Some people save a set dollar amount each time they are paid, while others may decide to save a percentage of what they earn. No matter what amount you decide to set aside, sticking to your savings goal ensures that you’ll have enough money in no time!

In January, Penny set a savings goal of $5 per month so she could buy beach items for her vacation. She stuck to her goal and now has $30 saved. Does she have enough money to buy all of the items below? Which items can she purchase?

ART BOT This simple project helps encourage creative thinking and problem solving. By putting together simple engineering and drawing, even the youngest child can help create a robot that will dance and draw!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

• Battery-Operated Electric Toothbrush • Pool Noodle • Scissors or Knife (adult use) • Tape (colored duct tape works great!) • Markers (thin markers work best) • White Paper Optional Decorative Supplies: • Googly Eyes • Pipe cleaners • Pom Poms • Yarn ** We found all our supplies at a local dollar store!

WHAT TO DO: STEP 1 Insert the battery in your toothbrush and turn it on to make sure it works. Cut the pool noodle slightly larger than the length of the toothbrush. (Let an adult do the cutting, please!) STEP 2 Push the toothbrush through the center of the pool noodle.

From your first tooth... to your last.

STEP 3 Use the optional supplies to decorate and design your pool noodle to give your art bot personality! You can use yarn or pipe cleaners for hair and arms, stickers, markers and more! Make your robot unique, just like you.

HOUMA FAMILY DENTAL

STEP 4 Tape 3 or 4 markers along the bottom of the pool noodle with the marker tips pointing down. Use the colored duct tape or paper strips to cover the markers. STEP 5 Turn on the toothbrush and let the art bot go! Tips:

• Play around for the best position of the markers on the pool noodle. It takes some trial and error to get him moving on his new marker legs!

Call today to schedule your appointment.

• Make sure the battery part of the toothbrush is situated close to the middle of your bot. • Buy extra batteries!

OBSTACLE COURSE FUN!

GREAT FOR DEVELOPMENT, EXERCISE AND FUN! An obstacle course is a fun activity that doubles as a functional exercise to enhance your child’s motor and sensory skills. It is also great fun for the whole family, a playdate, or a birthday party! Let’s learn what areas we can improve in our children’s life with obstacle course fun!

• Motor Planning: Obstacle courses provide a great opportunity for your child to improve motor planning (jumping rope, crab walks, hopscotch, etc.) as a transitional step to get from one location to the next or to deliver a puzzle piece to the puzzle.

• Sequencing and Memory: Obstacle courses can teach your child to sequence a multi-step activity as well as challenge their memory by progressively increasing the demands of the activity. Start with writing down the steps of the obstacle course on a piece of paper or dry erase board and transition into memorizing the steps without writing down the sequence. In addition, you can increase the number of steps as your child’s sequencing and memory skills improve!

• Bilateral Coordination: You can incorporate steps that challenge your child’s bilateral coordination by having him or her climb across 10 monkey bars, play catch by catching the ball 5 times or playing tug-a-war.

• Sensory Input: Within the course, you can incorporate various activities to provide multiple sensory inputs! Activities provide proprioceptive (deep pressure), vestibular movements, including linear (up and down), saggital (side to side) and rotary (spinning).

• Sidewalk chalk • Hula hoop • Jump rope • 2 buckets filled with water, weight appropriate • Scooter or bike • Stopwatch • Paper to keep track of time/score

• Strengthening and Balance: There are multiple activities you can incorporate within an obstacle course to provide opportunities to build your child’s strength.

FAMILY FIRST

Let’s have some fun with an obstacle course! Follow this idea or be creative with your own! What you will need:

14

JULY 2019

Set up 5 stations in an oval shape around your yard and driveway. It can also be a straight line. Space the stations as far apart or as close as you see fit for your child. Station 1: Draw a hopscotch Station 2: Place hula hoop Station 3: Place jump rope Station 4: Place buckets Station 5: Place scooter or bike

Instructions:

Have children line up at a station: • Each child will take a turn going through the circuit and you will time how long it takes them to complete the circuit. The child with the fastest time wins. • At station 1, kids hop on one leg across the entire hopscotch. At station 2, they hula hoop for 5 rotations. At station 3, they jump rope 5 times. At station 4, they carry the 2 buckets of water, one in each hand, to station 5. At station 5, they get on the bike or scooter and ride back to station 1.

New state laws will be implemented on August 1, 2019. • Any child that is younger than two years old must be restrained in a rear-facing child safety seat until they reach its height or weight limit. • A child that is older than two years old and has outgrown the rear-facing child safety seats must be restrained in a forwardfacing child safety seat with an internal harness until they reach its weight or height limit. • A child who is at least four years old and has outgrown the forward facing safety seats must be restrained by a beltpositioning booster seat

risks should an accident occur. In studies from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2017 on average, three children were killed every day in the United States in traffic crashes. Child safety seats have been shown to reduce fatal injury by 71 percent for infants (under 1 year old) and by 54 percent for toddlers (1 to 4 years old) in passenger cars. In 2017, of the 794 children killed in passenger vehicle crashes, restraint use was known for 721, of whom 267 (37 percent) were unrestrained. Louisiana has an organized network to address child passenger safety - the Louisiana Passenger Safety Task Force. The network is led by medical professionals to keep the prevention of injuries and fatalities, and the safety of your family a priority. There

are 28 technician instructors, 9 regional coordinators, a coordinator, director, and over 700 technicians.
