DYLAN SCOTT A COUNTRY BOY CAN

G
rowing up in rural northeastern Louisiana, just outside of Bastrop, Dylan Scott’s second home was in nature. Hunting, fishing and the like are in his blood and those experiences are evident in every aspect of his music. “Growing up in the country is part of my music. There were woods near our house,” the 26-year-old reminisces. “I grew up duck hunting and deer hunting. I went fishing and I played ball. That’s just what we did and who we were.” But the outdoors was not the only thing that grabbed Dylan’s attention at a young age. He also spent considerable time watching his dad play guitar behind Tex-Mex music icon Freddy Fender, country crooner Freddie Hart, and other country stars. “When you’re a kid, you either want to be your mom or you want to be your dad, and then you usually grow out of that. I kind of never grew out of it,” he says. “I just always made music and loved it. As far as I can remember, I just wanted to go to Nashville and be a country artist.” So he chased that dream by going back and forth to Nashville and meeting people at just 17 years old.
“GROWING UP IN THE COUNTRY IS PART OF MY MUSIC”. Through those visits, he met his current manager who landed him a deal with Curb Records, a company he knew of through his love of the genre. “I always knew Curb Records because Tim McGraw, who’s also a Louisiana boy, was on Curb Records. I used to look on the back of his CDs and see the logo,” Dylan recalls. “It was cool to follow in the steps of one of your heroes and be on the same label. It was really fun.” After signing the record deal, Dylan moved to Nashville, started writing music and recording. “The recording process was long. It was last year be-
fore I finally got my first album, so it took like five years to finally get an album out,” he says. But that length of time is just fine with Dylan as he was able to craft his songwriting and skills along the way. The payoff came when he was able to see his first full-length album, which was released in August 2016, amongst other country artists, something he dreamed about when he would peruse the music section in Walmart as a child. In writing his songs, Dylan tries to make it as real as he can. His hit song “My Girl” is as real as it gets as it was inspired by his girlfriend at the time – who is now his wife, Blair Anderson. “It was 10 years in the making because my wife and I were high school sweethearts, and so “My Girl” is about my girl,” he explains. “It’s about us and what I see in my girl that no one is going to notice but me - the little things. I wanted to write it that way to where when guys heard it they would think to themselves ‘oh, he’s talking about my girl.’ I wanted it to be realistic in their eyes as well.” With the release of his self-titled album and “My Girl” shooting up the charts, Dylan and his “band of brothers” have taken their show on the road and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The My Town tour kicked off in February and includes a stop at the Thibodaux Firemen’s Fair on May 6. He also makes an appearance during Bayou Country Superfest’s kick-off celebration at Champions Square on May 26. “We’re bringing the My Town Tour to all these towns, selling out clubs and small theaters, just having a good time. People are really showing up, which is kind of crazy to me to be honest,” Dylan says of the experience so far. “As an artist, there’s nothing like going home because people show up that supported you from the beginning. It’s just really cool to see them out. Honestly, it’s really cool to be home and doing something for a community in the state.”

The Firemen’s Fair Brings
Great Music, Delicious Eats, Good Times
T
he Thibodaux Volunteer Fire Department is once again inviting you and your family to its Fairgrounds for the Firemen’s Fair, May 4-7. This year marks the 133rd anniversary of southeast Louisiana’s largest and hottest fundraising fair that has consistently been a great time for the entire family. With live music, carnival rides, and great food, the Firemen’s Fair has been a huge draw for the community and has helped the fire department tremendously over the years. It also provides a way for the community to fund the department without having to tax them as it provides 40 percent of the department’s annual budget. “Not to be cliche, but my favorite part about the fair is the community coming together and enjoying the fair,” Walton Guidry of the Firemen’s Fair says. And with these crowds, long lines have tended to develop on the fairgrounds, causing the committee to take a few steps for this year’s edition. “We’re going to have ticket machines to help speed up the food ticket lines,” Walton explains. “The ticket lines have become really long over the years, so we added these ticket machines to speed up the process.” Among the main draws behind the ticket lines is the famous Firemen’s

Fair Burger. It remains a mystery as to why they come out the way they do, but you can bet that these delicious patties are sure to be a consumed by a multitude of hungry fair goers over the weekend. But food isn’t the only thing that will draw in the crowd. Live music from rising country star and Louisiana native Dylan Scott, who’s hit single, “My Girl” has steadily climbed the country airplay charts, will be featured on the Rouses Markets Band Stage on Saturday night. Variety bands 90 Degrees West, Mule Kick, The Groove, Sheauxdown, Pepper Jelly, Voodoo Bayou, Kylie Frey, Dustin Sonnier, Snapper & The Fishsticks, and Good Feelings Band will have you moving and grooving to your favorite hits, while Tommy G & Stormy Weather provide a swamp pop groove and Candlebox, whose ‘90s hits like “Far Behind,” provide a rock edge. Over its 130 plus years, the fair has evolved from the fire department getting together with plywood and tarps to set up kid’s games and cook hamburgers and hot dogs. Since then, they have added the Thibodaux Firemen’s Parade and many of the other facets of entertainment you can find at the fair today. The parade, one of the oldest in all of Louisiana, features large

He, like the Grand Marshals before him, will be celebrated at a social following the parade and given a red jacket, effectively inducting him into a Grand Marshal’s Hall of Fame of sorts, joining all of the previous Grand Marshals.
The fair’s festivities are rounded out by a 5K & Fun Run that takes place on the Saturday morning and brings participants on a scenic journey through historic downtown Thibodaux and ending at the fairgrounds entrance. To make participation more enticing for runners, each person is awarded a medal and refreshments as they cross the finish line. Over the years, Walton has seen his fair share of Firemen’s Fairs and
found something to enjoy at each one. In his youth, he would look forward to the rides, and as he grew up he would find himself taking in some of the best music the area had to offer. Nowadays, Walton has a few extra eyes to help him see the beauty in this Thibodaux mainstay. “I have two young boys now, so it’s different to the see the fair through their eyes and see them enjoy the rides.”

T
he threats had become too much. Pop superstar Rachel Marron was under attack by a crazed stalker and she needed protection. Enter Frank Farmer, a professional bodyguard, former Secret Service Agent, and the title character of the Saenger Theatre’s next show, “The Bodyguard,” which debuts April 4. Judson Mills, who may be a recognizable face thanks to his extensive television career, came to embody the larger-thanlife character by fate and is enjoying his return to the stage. Growing up, Judson was an athlete, but was always surrounded by the arts by way of his musical family. It was during high school, however, when he discovered his passion for theater. “There was a woman there that was an actress who had been on Broadway back in the day,” he explains. “She was in the original ‘Annie Get Your Gun’. She
recognized, I suppose, a performer in me and she pushed me into doing a play. I did the play, I had a small part, and in the middle of the play when I did my piece, I got a standing ovation.” That moment was all it took to steer Judson’s sights on a pro sports career to one of a professional actor. He enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City and spent much of his adult career appearing on the small screen. He spent three seasons as “Hutch” on “As the World Turns”, was part of the second half of the long-running “Walker, Texas Ranger” as Gage, and has taken on more than 35 starring roles in everything from “Law and Order” to HBO’s “Westworld”. Though he wasn’t intentionally seeking out a return to the stage, when “The Bodyguard” came calling, he knew it was meant to be. “I didn’t plan on it. It wasn’t some-

thing I was searching out. It wasn’t something I was intending to do but it wasn’t something I was against,” he says. “The funny part of the story is that my college roommate was Alex Dinelaris, who wrote the book for this. They couldn’t find anyone for the bodyguard and he called me. He was like, ‘Hey man, would you want to travel?’ We got together and put some stuff on tape, sent it out and here we are.” Judson joins R&B star Deborah Cox, who takes on the role of Rachel Marron, a role made famous by the incomparable Whitney Houston in the 1992 Academy Award-nominated romantic thriller. Though the two had never worked together prior to “The Bodyguard”, the matchup, Judson says, has been amazing. “We ended up having great chemistry, Deborah and I, which is sort of a fate thing. You either have the chemistry or you don’t. It’s not really one of those things that you can work on. And we didn’t get to chemistry read before we met. Basically I got hired on a Thursday and rehearsal started in Manhattan on Monday. We met at the first rehearsal.” Though Frank Farmer is a far cry from Judson’s real personality, embodying the character has been both challenging and deeply rewarding for the veteran actor. While Frank is more stoic, Judson has enjoyed the process of figuring out how to make him come alive to audience members, no matter where they are seated in the theater. “I’m much more gregarious and outspoken and wear my sense of humor and my heart on my sleeve a lot more than he does,” he explains. “He’s a relatively conservative, withdrawn and self-contained kind of guy. I’ve also found over the course of doing this how to incorporate some of myself so that Frank has some personality and Frank has some colors and shades of humor that make him interesting on stage. You can have a character in a film who doesn’t say a word the whole movie but you still get to know him and what he’s about through the camera because you’re right in his face and you can see what he’s thinking and feeling. On stage, it’s different. That element isn’t present and so to be a man of few words and simple movements on stage is very challenging because a lot of times it’s just straight boring from the 15th row or the 23rd row.” As for the show itself, audiences are in for a ride. While Frank is initially tasked with protecting Rachel, the duo grow fond of each other and the love story that unfolds, Judson explains, combined with iconic music make it a show you won’t want to miss. “Just as a concert, it’s a winner. You get your money’s worth just being able to come listen to Deborah Cox,” Judson says of the show, which features hits like “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” and “I Will Always Love You”. “Then there’s the story beyond it. In this particular version, there’s all different elements in this. There’s a lot of humor in this that you may not remember in the movie the same way. The love story is very poignant and very passionate. Then there’s the “THE BODYGUARD” CAPTIVATES danger. Although it is a musical, it’s AUDIENCES AT THE also very suspenseful. There’s SAENGER THEATRE some moments where you’re scared APRIL 4-9. TICKETS ARE and there’s some cool special effects $31-$160 AND MAY BE so it’s a ride. he inaugural Paddle the Kayaks Fishing Tournament hits the waters of Cocodrie on April 22. The event, akin to Ride the Bull in Grand Isle, will be a fun experience for the whole family as face painting, KnockerBalls, $5 raffle tickets, and lots of food will be available to everyone in attendance. “We’re doing the same format in Cocodrie as Ride the Bulls,” tournament coordinator Ronny Brown says. “Everybody’s pitching in to help make this happen. All the way down the line, they’re all getting involved in this tournament to help kickstart their season. I’m trying to help them because Cocodrie is like a ghost town sometimes. So it’s going to benefit them and the law enforcement.” While bringing money into the area through the event, Ronny also wants to raise money to help furnish improved bulletproof vests for local law enforcement. “I’m trying to give back,” he explains. “They need $500 vests that can take a rifle bullet. I can’t ask anyone to go out there to try and protect me without the right kind of equipment. That’s what this event is for.” The festivities kick off the night before with tournament check-in and an opening night dinner, followed by live music from local band Wine Down. Then, competitors will paddle out in their kayaks, canoes, pirogues, or whatever they might have (as long as its not motored) to catch redfish and speckled trout on April 22, with cash prizes for 1st - 4th place finishers in both categories. “It’s a growing sport right now. Kayaking is catching on,” Ronny says. “Another thing I like about it is that kids are now fishing. You don’t need a $40,000 boat, you don’t need $100 worth of gas. A little boat and a paddle, you can launch anywhere and you’re fishing. They’ve got just as a good chance as anybody at winning.” The actual fishing will take place from 7:30 a.m-2 p.m., with all the competitors coming in for the official weigh-in from 2-3 p.m. Following that will be a boat race that should be a thrilling experience for the spectators and competitors. And then, of course, in southern Louisiana, you have to eat. “We’re going to have a fish fry that evening with all the fish we catch,” Ronny explains. “I’m trying to make this a big community event, and a lot of people are pitching in.” Live music will also follow the fish fry, so there will be plenty to do that evening. Registration is currently underway, with the deadline for registration and fees falling on April 17. Anyone can participate as long as they have some form of nonmotorized boat. Cost is $75 for adults and $65 for children. For more information, visit paddlethekayaks.org.

addle Down da Bayou saw its start from Laura “Lee Lee” Trosclair’s love of paddling and the bayous after doing Paddle Bayou Lafourche for several years. However, she wanted something that would feature the Chauvin area and provide a more family-oriented experience for people that don’t paddle as seriously. Thus, Paddle Down da Bayou was born, and the event is entering its fourth year in the waters of Bayou Petit Caillou. Sponsored by Terrebonne Advocates for Possibilities, Paddle Down da Bayou takes its participants from the launch site near the Capital One Bank
to a rest stop at the Chauvin Sculpture Garden before proceeding to the LLMap Camp to complete the paddling journey. The total mileage for the trip is about five miles and even allows you to float under two bridges: Chauvin Bridge and Toussant Foret Bridge. Upon completion, everybody makes

their way out of the water and heads back up the bayou to the Little Caillou Volunteer Fire Department for a crawfish boil and live music. “When everyone finishes paddling, they get a carved, 4-inch paddle by one of our senior citizens from down here,” Lee Lee explains. “It has a number, so
that’s their ticket to get door prizes.” In the meantime, the kiddos will have a children’s section to keep them entertained with art and toys. Finally, a volleyball game pitting the up the bayou folk versus their down the bayou friends will take place to settle the score for ultimate bragging rights. If you are interested in participating but don’t have a kayak, LUMCON and a private donor are loaning kayaks for the event, as well as another lender that is loaning paddleboards. free to bring your own kayak, pirogue, or whatever non-motorized boat you may have. The proceeds from this event are headed toward preserving the culture of Chauvin and its surrounding areas. “We’d like to take the Old Boudreaux store, which is down the bayou a bit, and convert it into a cultural center, so that’s kind of our purpose,” Lee Lee explains. “The vision is to preserve our culture on this bayou by pictures, stories, and artifacts so we could have our little living museum of our culture which is slipping away very quickly.” As they enter their fourth year, the Paddle Down da Bayou crew is looking forward to sharing another day with paddling, eating, and lots of fun. “That’s what it’s all about,” Lee Lee says. “It’s just a family-friendly slow paddle trip down the bayou, and we have a good time. We have a very big pavilion, so there’s a lot of place for everybody.”

musicians, and singers gathered around the fire for a collaborative night of artistry and entertainment. On Thursday and Friday, the festival hosts songwriters’ retreats at various locations, including The Bell Tower, Lake End Park, and Scott Green Properties, to give songwriters a beautiful vantage point of the Louisiana bayou to come up with their next hit song. A unique aspect to the retreats is The Songwriters Gumbo, a raffle in which participants’ names are tossed into a gumbo pot and two are selected to journey a unique adventure into songwriting with a partner. “We’ll take them out into the bayou for two hours so that they can write songs. They’ll get to hang out in the swamp and see the alligators,” festival director London Brigitte says. Throughout the weekend, songwriters, including Brigitte, host talks on everything from CD releases to establishing a social media following and how it can help your career, and a host of songwriter shows and pickin’ parties keep the music going. Friday brings Outlaw Country Legend Billy Joe Shaver to Acadiana
Bar & Grill. Shaver has penned songs for the likes of Waylon Jennings, earned fans in Kris Kirstofferson and Bob Dylan, and has been honored by the Americana Music Association with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Songwriting. On Saturday, Dean Dillon, who has penned hits like George Strait’s “The Chair” and “Tennessee Whiskey”, which has been recorded by David Allen Coe, George Jones, and most recently, Chris Stapleton takes the stage. Both of these ticketed events are open to the public and Brigitte says offer attendees an intimate experience with some of the best in the songwriting world. These events will also feature several opening acts and a live auction on Saturday. One last hooray takes place Sunday with Last Honky Tonk Fest, hosted by Dallas Wayne of Sirus/XM’s Willie’s Roadhouse & Outlaw Country. It serves as a celebratory end to what Brigitte promises will be an unforgettable event. “They need to come,” she says to those considering the weekend event. “It’s songwriters, legends, and incredible storytellers all in one place.”

LET’S GO TO THE MOVIES BY JONAH GIROIR
PHOTOS VIA ROTTEN TOMATOES
A
fter such an eventful March, movie theaters will be looking to continue that momentum in April and the coming summer months. And while most of these may not hit the $174 million opening weekend that “Beauty and the Beast” achieved last month, there are still a few heavy hitters to be found. April kicks off with the first animated children’s movie in a while with “Smurfs: The Lost Village” (April 7). Unlike the previous big screen attempts at this series, this one will be fully animated. However, all your favorite Smurfs will still be around as Papa Smurf, Smurfette, and the rest of the gang tries to outrace the evil wizard Gargamel. Another animated movie hits the screens in “Spark” (April 14). This one follows a wisecracking
teen monkey and his friends on an abandoned planet as they attempt to stop the evil General Zhong’s plan to wipe out the entire universe using the deadly space Kraken. Finally, “Leap!” (April 21) rounds out the animated options for the month with two orphans, Felicie and Victor, who decide to leave their orphanage in pursuit of their passions for dance and inventing, respectively. Sure to be a heartfelt, underdog story with a touching message. “Going In Style” (April 7) also hits theaters early in the month and features three retirees played by Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Alan Arkin as they plan a bank heist. Seeing these Academy Award winners getting into this kind of mischief should be a great time. “The
Case for Christ” (April 7) provides an intriguing story about an awardwinning investigative reporter using his journalistic and legal training to disprove the claims of Christianity. However, this puts a strain on his marriage as his resolute atheism is pitted against his wife’s growing faith. The movie with the best chance of pulling numbers like “Beauty and the Beast” is the eighth installment in The Fast and the Furious series, “The Fate of the Furious” (April 14). Its predecessor, “Furious 7”, ranks as the sixth largest all-time worldwide grossing movie, so the franchise has a huge following. It’ll be intriguing to see where the franchise is headed without Paul Walker as they gave him a touching sendoff in 2015. Vin Diesel,
Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, and the rest of the crew return to bring more of the fast-paced, adrenaline pumping action. The following week sees the next installment in the Disney Nature series, “Born in China” (April 21). The documentary follows the stories of three animal families: pandas, golden monkeys, and snow leopards. Narrated by John Krasinski, the documentary is geared to provide an educational and entertaining experience for all. The month is rounded out with a set of dramas and thrillers including “Unforgettable” (April 21), “The Promise” (April 21), “Free Fire” (April 21), “The Circle” (April 28), and “Sleight” (April 28).

THIS IS OUR STORY By ASHLEY ELSTON Review by Keisa Arceneaux, Terrebonne Parish Library System
Y
oung adult author and Louisiana native Ashley Elston is back with her new book “This is Our Story”. Like her other books, this one is set in Louisiana and contains both murder and mystery. The story begins with five boys who go on a routine hunting trip. Things take a turn from there when Grant, one of the five, takes a fatal bullet from his own rifle. The boys decide it is in their best interest to deny knowledge about who fired the gun, thus casting suspicion on the surviving four. The book is told from the viewpoint of both Grant’s killer and Kate Marino, a senior at the local public high school. Kate has recently landed what she assumes will be an easy paid internship
at the district attorney’s office, until the case that rocks her community lands on her boss’s desk—that is. The case involves five boys, known as the River Point Boys, and a hunting trip gone badly. The boys no longer attend their private school and now attend the same public school as Kate. Her boss warns her to keep her distance since communicating with them could jeopardize the case. This is a bit difficult for Kate because she knew Grant. She is determined to find justice for him. As the story progresses, Kate realizes that Grant was not the person she thought he was. She goes against the advice of her boss and teams up with one of the River Point Boys in order to discover the truth, thus risking her internship, the case, and possibly

even her life. I love Kate’s personality. She is a likable character who has a very strong sense of justice and loyalty. Her determination to see things through to the end is very noble. The author has an amazing way of creating a fast-paced thriller that appeals to both young adult and adult audiences alike. What I love most about Ashley’s books is they lack the forced dialect frequently found in many other books set in Louisiana. Instead, she allows her storytelling ability and attention to detail create the setting. For those who would like to read more of her works, check out her previous books, “Rules for Breaking” and “Rules for Disappearing”.
