A
iming to be bigger and better with every year, the Acadia Music Fest has an all-star lineup ready for their Oct. 28 date at the Acadia Plantation Town Center in Thibodaux. Headlined by Cowboy Mouth and Better Than Ezra, the lineup features some of last year’s favorites and a few new acts, including Jordan Anderson Band, John Daigle, Snapper and the Fishsticks, Bang Bang, Calling Home, Caro & Company, and Burning Kane. “We’ve always envisioned this as a safe environment for families, where they can enjoy themselves without having to worry about their children,” Tommy Meyer the festival’s presenter says. “We have great vendors and the music lineup is second to none. If you think about an era of maybe the 90s/early 2000s, the bands that you saw that were regional acts were Cowboy Mouth and Better Than Ezra. To be able to put those two bands on one stage in one place, was just a dream come true. That credit goes to Amy Hebert, who has worked tirelessly to make sure that this event is over the top.” New to this year’s iteration is a Kid’s Korner, where kids can be artists and musicians too. Tommy adds that the area will have activities to enjoy, but will focus on educating them on musical instruments and keep within the festival’s theme. In addition to these offerings, festival goers will be able to feast on delicious food from La Carreta, Spahr’s Restaurant, Big Wil & the Warden, Fete au Fete Streatery, Off the Hook, The Jambalaya Shoppe, Snola Snowballs, Alumni Grill, Premier Catering & Events, and Callais Cajun Cooking. The festival will also feature an art market, featuring vendors like Waguespack Art, Ellen McCord, Stacey Fabre, Hank Holland, Brigid Himel, Becky Ford Jewelry, Amber LeBlanc Studio, Cyd Toups Studio, String Theory:

Guitar String Jewelry, Religious Icons and Shrines, and Ship-NGeaux. Tommy sums the offerings up best by saying, “There’s going to be a little bit of something for everyone. No matter what age you are, you’ll be able to come out and have a good time.” Proceeds from Acadia Music Fest will benefit Ben Meyer Foundation, an organization close to Tommy’s heart. He and a board started the foundation in memory of Ben, Tommy’s late brother, in order to leave a legacy of giving as Ben was a kind, fun loving man with a desire to always help those in need. Once the foundation sees the amount of money raised, they will then assess the community and decide which charity they will donate the funds to. Looking forward, Tommy has big plans for Acadia Music Fest. “Obviously, you learn as you go and you learn as you grow,” he says. “The ultimate theme will always remain the same. Amy and our team have done a terrific job in patching up some of the holes we had in the first year. Going forward, we hope to make it bigger and better every year. We don’t want it to ever become stale.” As far as this year is concerned, Tommy is thankful for the support, adding that the number of sponsors has tripled in number over the course of one year. “The support from businesses has been amazing,” he says. “Come out and support the local businesses that sponsor the festival. They’re the backbone of this. Our sponsors make this thing go. You’re going to have a chance in one place to support local food vendors, give local artists that may not have the chance to show off what they’ve done, and you’ll see some of the best bands in this area. If you come out, you won’t be disappointed.”

ouma native, Chris Walker found himself with extra time on his hands due to the slow economy and decided to get creative. It all started as part of a bet from a friend, who had dared him to carve a fish that was on his shirt. After he won the bet by carving out the fish, he realized that this was something that he truly enjoyed doing. That moment led Chris to many other endeavors, including the launch of his own business, 4 Seas Fisheries. Aside from running his growing business, Chris is also a charter captain and enjoys fishing every chance he gets. Being on the water so much may have been early inspiration for his current occupation, but as far as artistry goes, Chris admits that he has no prior experience. He credits his background in carpentry work as helpful in his ability to cut with such accuracy. It was only a few months ago at an event in Baton Rouge, the CCA (Coastal Conservation Association) Officials took notice of Chris’ work and were highly impressed by the intricate detail. From that point on, word began to spread, and Chris has been busy ever since. In a secluded barn near his home, Chris can regularly be found working on his craft. He is allowed to completely focus on the task at hand and seems to enjoy his work environment. “I have a fan blow-
ing, there’s no A/C, I turn on my Bose stereo system and let it rip.” Every piece of artwork that is done is custom made. There are specific components that make up this process which include distressing, drawing, painting, and sanding the wood. When he first began, one piece would take up to a week, now it takes only a few hours for Chris to complete a project. Using only a jigsaw and drills, Chris takes pride in the hours of work put into these pieces of art. “I’ve looked into getting a CNC machine, but it’s more custom if I do it by hand,” he says. He originally began this process using pallets as his canvas, but moved on to cypress, cedar, and pine boards to get the jobs done. Chris is known for carving fish such as tuna, marlin, snapper, and tarpon varying in sizes from two to six feet in length. As of March of this year, he has carved 26 pieces and assures that he is not limited to just aquatic life. He has also fashioned other designs
including a carving of an aerial view of Grand Isle and is planning to carve more animals such as ducks and deer for his customers. What really gives his artwork life is the LED lights placed in the background that has 40 different color options to choose from including strobe effects. By using a remote that is included in the purchase of one of these pieces, the customer is allowed to choose what color best fits their desired mood. Chris prices his artwork based on size and detail. He has also donated some of his art to various organizations throughout the area and plans to do much more. Chris is just getting started and so far, business seems promising. And to think, it all started with a bet.

magine a place where the sun is hot, the water’s warm, and the drinks are as cold as they are plentiful. It’s always five o’clock in Margaritaville, and the Pre-Broadway premiere of the new musical, Escape to Margaritaville, is the perfect setting for your happy hour. Take a break from your troubles, make some new friends at the bar, and kick back to the soothing sounds of the kettledrum as you enjoy original songs and the most-loved Jimmy Buffett classics, including “Come Monday,” “Volcano,” “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” and many more. With a book by Emmy Award winner Greg Garcia and Emmy Award nominee Mike O’Malley, this rousing and refreshing new production is choreographed by Tony Award nominee Kelly Devine and directed by Tony Award winner Christopher Ashley. There’s a ton of talent involved with this production, and we had the opportunity to speak with one of the ensemble performers, Brett Thiele. For Brett, pursuing theater came about when teachers and principals realized a need to channel his energy. “I actually started off as a gymnast. I had a lot of problems sitting still in class,” the New Orleans native says. “I ended up doing a school play, in maybe the fourth grade or something like that. It was kind of an instant click. My sister was the one that sort of forced me to go to my first audition. I fell in love with it after that.”
Since then, the young actor has been involved with Broadway productions like Miss Saigon and Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark prior to joining the Escape to Margaritaville cast. Throughout the rehearsal process, Brett has been amazed by the progress the group has made. “It’s actually been very impressive,” he explains. “This cast is incredibly smart. We’re sort of rolling through the show. We’re putting number and number and number together, and I think it’s an incredibly talented cast, full of incredibly smart people. We’ve already all vibed, and it feels like we know what we’re getting into. It’s been wonderful so far. We’re all really excited to share the piece.”
ESCAPE TO MARGARITAVILLE KICKS OFF THE 2017-2018 EAST JEFFERSON GENERAL HOSPITAL BROADWAY IN NEW ORLEANS SEASON WHEN IT TAKES THE STAGE AT THE SAENGER THEATRE OCTOBER 20-28. TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE AT TICKETMASTER.COM.
With the show making its pre-Broadway rounds, Brett will have the opportunity to perform in front of a home crowd, something that has always been a bucket list item. “This is a dream come true. The Saenger Theatre is where I fell in love with theater,” Brett says. “Ever since I’ve pursued it as a career, it’s been very high on my bucket list to get back and be able to perform in front of familiar faces and my family who don’t necessarily get to make it to New York all the time. To be able to perform in front of a home crowd is a dream come true.” As for the show, the cast and crew are looking forward to inviting the audience into their kind of paradise. “You can expect to see a wonderful boy meets girl in paradise love story with an amazing sense of humor attached to it. It’s going to be a unique experience. And in a time like this when we could all probably use a break from the outside world, it’s going to feel like slipping into a warm bath with a nice, big margarita,” Brett adds. “Expect to have a good time. We look forward to seeing everybody in New Orleans.”

TAKE 5: DO ANY OF THE SETS OR ACTORS SCARE YOU OR HAUNT YOU? IF SO, WHICH ONES?
BY JONAH GIROIR PHOTO COURTESY OF JAY LESAICHERRE
W
hen most students admit they’re scared of a teacher, it is likely due to stories they’ve heard about said teacher giving difficult tests. These stories usually don’t involve the teacher becoming a zombie and popping out of dark corners in one of the most popular haunted houses in the United States, but such is the life for Jay LeSaicherre’s students at Gonzales Middle School. The Ellender Memorial High and LSU graduate is looking forward to starting another year with The 13th Gate in Baton Rouge, and we jumped at the opportunity to interview a zombie.
HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH 13TH GATE AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN THERE?
They actually hold open auditions every year the last weekend of August and first of September. I had someone close to me audition and she loved it. They needed more actors so I applied. If I can rehab my shoulder in time, this will be my fourth year as an actor.
WHAT PARTS OF THE EXPERIENCE HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN?
Since I have a full-time teaching job, I can only work weekends, and as such, am generally used as an alternate actor. I have had the chance to be in many different scenes, both in The 13th Gate and Necropolis 13 (our zombie infested New Orleans cemetery). This means that for some positions, I might get a quick costume or spend more than an hour having makeup carefully applied. I’ve had heavy prosthetics, airbrush make up, complicated rigging to help me fly, triggers for air cannons, and more than I can think of.
12 October 2017 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide
Anyone that says jump scares don’t scare them are lying (at least to themselves). As far as scenes go, I am generally more impressed than scared. However, the Doll Room is creepy and just gets worse the longer you stay in. There is a character that can scare me nightly even though I know what he’s going to do. For those who have been recently, they know that there is a mirror maze with a demented clown inside. I used to have to walk through the maze to get to my scene in London, and he would hide and pop out. I can’t blame him. A good scare is a good scare.
WHY IS IT CALLED THE 13TH GATE?
It is called the 13th Gate, because the house has 13 themed areas or gates. Each Gate may have more than one room though. Necropolis 13 is the graveyard across the street.
WHAT IS THE BEST REACTION YOU’VE GOTTEN FROM A GUEST?
My best reaction actually came from Necropolis 13 when I was a zombie hidden away in a corner of the cemetery. A group of six college age guys came through acting tough. It was pretty dark, so it was very hard to see me in the corner. I popped out with a blood curdling zombie hiss. Most of the guys just stepped back, but one took off running. I followed. As he turned the corner he let out a sigh of relief and turned around expecting his buddies. Instead of the calming presence of his friends, he got my bloody face. Without even thinking he punched me as hard as he could in the arm. Despite the pain, the punch left a gnarly bruise for two weeks, I continued trying to scare him, and he ran away from the scene leaving the faint, but unmistakable, scent of urine. As far as the bruising goes, well that’s what we call a victory mark.

O
ctober marks the beginning of year two of the Let’s Go to the Movies movie preview in Gumbo Entertainment Guide. We have seen lots of fun and intriguing movies over the past twelve months, and I’m looking forward to continue exploring the silver screen. October has a few interesting films to check out, plus some horror offerings to get you in the Halloween spirit. Let’s check it out. The first weekend consists of Blade Runner 2049, The Mountain Between Us and My Little Pony: The Movie (Oct. 6). Harrison Ford reprises his role as Rick Deckard in Blade Runner 2049, the sequel to the 1982 film. Set thirty years after the first film’s events, Ryan Gosling stars as a new blade runner that unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. The Mountain Between Us focuses on Idris Elba and Kate Winslet as they are stranded after a tragic plane crash. The two strangers are forced to work together to survive the extreme elements they find themselves in, and when they realize help is not coming, the duo traverses across hundreds of miles of wilderness and push one another to endure and ignite an unexpected attraction.
Finally, My Little Pony: The Movie shows the Mane 6 – Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, and Rarity – as they embark on an unforgettable journey beyond their homeland where they meet new friends and attempt to save their home from a new dark force. The second weekend of the month conveniently starts with Friday the Thirteenth. This weekend’s releases include The Foreigner, Happy Death Day and Marshall (Oct. 13). The Foreigner follows a restaurant owner (Jackie Chan) in London’s Chinatown who goes on a revenge mission after his wife and daughter are killed by a bomb and the justice system fails him. Happy Death Day is the story of Theresa aka Tree, the queen bee of her sorority. Early in the movie, Tree is murdered, yet she wakes up the next morning only to find out that it’s not the next morning, rather the day she was murdered again. Tree must relive the same day over and over until she figures out who is trying to kill her and why. Marshall stars Chadwick Boseman as Thurgood Marshall in this biopic about the former U.S. Supreme Court member. The movie focuses on Marshall and Samuel Friedman (Josh Gad) as they struggle against

a hostile storm of fear and prejudice, driven to discover the truth in the trial which helped set the groundwork for the Civil Rights Movement to come. Next up is a weekend loaded with nationwide releases. The Snowman, Geostorm, Only the Brave, Same Kind of Different As Me and Boo! 2: A Madea Halloween (Oct. 20) all make their appearance on the big screen in October’s third weekend. Michael Fassbender and Rebecca Ferguson lead the cast in The Snowman, a film about the search for a serial killer that reappears with the first snowfall of the season. In Geostorm, after an unprecedented series of natural disasters, the world’s leaders came together to create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe. However, something has gone awry and it’s a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything. Only the Brave, based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, is the heroic story of one unit of local firefighters that become one of the most elite firefighting teams in the country. Josh Brolin, Jeff Bridges, and Miles Teller star in this thrilling story. Same Kind of Different As Me is the

ALWAYS BY MY SIDE EDWARD GRINNAN
Reviewed by Carlos Crockett, Terrebonne Parish Reference Librarian
I
admit it: I am a history buff. I usually go for readings about the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the American Civil Rights movement. Edward Grinnan’s book, Always by My Side, would not have come across my radar if not for a small Louisiana town named Colfax in Grant Parish. I was on my way to East Texas to see family, when I stopped in the town to get something to drink. It was by chance, or so I thought, that I met a gentleman camped out in front of the store who was giving away some adorable puppies. I loved these puppies, and within minutes I was back in my car with a soda and two new members of my family. I had no idea at the time, but these puppies would blend in perfectly with my family, providing unconditional love and inspiration for me to read Grinnan’s book. Grinnan’s book is a collection of stories about some of the dogs he and his wife have owned and the lessons they’ve taught him about love, loyalty, and seeing the beauty and simplicity of life. One of his dogs, Rudy, a cocker spaniel with an eating disorder, actually helped him meet his wife, Julie. A former addict, Grinnan tells how his faith helped him connect with his dogs and steer him away from a destructive lifestyle as an alcoholic. Grinnan’s favorite dog, Millie, a mild-mannered Labrador retriever, became ferocious when protecting him from a bear while out hiking, but cowered in a local deli because of a cat inside. Grinnan uses Millie’s reactions to these cat and bear situations to point out that our own struggles in life can be big or small, but regardless, it’s our reactions to them that determines our faith. In summary, Grinnan’s book is a must read for those contemplating getting a pet or who are trying to overcome an addiction. I initially thought it was by accident that I stopped in Colfax and generally feared traveling through it. However, after reading Grinnan’s book, I feel it was ordained for me to stop and relinquish my fear. Just like Grinnan, I too, believe it was my increasing faith and the love exhibited by my dogs, Laci and Molly, that have allowed me to grow spiritually and know that God is in control. Through Him, I now have the confidence to conquer my own bear and cat struggles in life.
