elcome to the Cajun Christmas Festival! This unique fundraiser will benefit the MAX Charter School in Thibodaux. Being held on December 9 at the Chackbay Fairgrounds, participants will be treated to an old fashioned Cajun Christmas. MAX Charter School is a public school located on the campus of Nicholls State University dedicated to educating and meeting the needs of children with dyslexia and other learning differences. MAX was the first school of its kind in Louisiana, designed for children in first through eighth grades. It is the MAX philosophy that “all children can learn when their learning disorders are properly diagnosed, when their teachers are properly trained, and when their educational environment emphasizes support, dignity and individual responsibility.” The school typically hosts their spring fundraiser “Race for Their Future” 5K and Race Fest in March. This year, Mother Nature pulled a pretty rotten prank and rained out not only the original date, but the May rain-out date as well. So the school got creative and decided to bring a new fundraiser to the area this year. “We knew we wanted to do an event in the fall,” says Wendie Darcey, member of the MAX PTA. “We thought what better time than Christmas!” With the help of the elves of the MAX PTA, the Cajun Christmas Festival will bring joy and festive fun to the children of our area. The downhome Cajun fest will feature games and booths with activities such as cookie decorating and ornament making. Children will be able to round the Fairgrounds on Santa’s Sleigh Ride before meeting with the man of the hour, Santa Claus. If a little fast-footed swing dancing is in your cards, get ready for the Jitterbug Contest! Contestants will put on their boogie shoes as Tet Dur provides the jams for this unique contest! The entry fee is $20. Of course, no Cajun festival would be complete without a Cook-Off. Area chefs are encouraged to enter their best Cajuninspired dishes to compete for prizes including 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and Best Choice. There is no entry fee for the cook-off, but registration is required by December 4. “We are looking forward to having a great event and some great fun,” says Wendie. “Take a drive and enjoy this festive event with your family.”

aking Christmas memories falls at the top of the list for families near and far. To help make the holidays merry and bright, the elves at Chez Felicité Bed and Breakfast have been busy readying the home for their newest guests: teddy bears and you! The Bayou Christmas Teddy Bear Tea will be held at Chez Felicité in Raceland over the course of two weekends, December 9-10 and 16-17. Chez Felicité opened its doors as a bed and breakfast three years ago. Dr. Mike and Mrs. Brenda Dardar Robichaux own the home that has been in Dr. Mike’s family for generations. Built by Dr. Philip Robichaux, the home served several purposes over the years before becoming what it is today, a home to everyone. “We enjoy sharing the home with our visitors,” explains Brenda. “As a bed and breakfast, we work with the French tour buses that come in and get to share our culture, in particular, the culture of the Houma people.” The home features an extensive art display of some of the local crafts and historical items. Brenda loves to share the connection the United Houma Nation has with the French that goes back hundreds of years. Chez Felicité serves primarily as a events location, with guests holding events such as baby showers, engagement parties, and weddings. “It’s such a wonderful thing, getting to share this with others,” says Brenda, “All of these events are such an important part of peoples’ lives. To be able to be a part of it is an honor.” The comfortable setting of the home and the desire for families to make memoires is what lead Brenda to the idea of holding a teddy bear tea. After attending the famed teddy bear tea at the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans, Brenda knew she could bring a bayou version of the tea to Raceland. “We are really holding the tea for those people who are interested in finding events where they can create those special memories with their children and grandchildren,” explains Brenda. The Bayou Christmas Teddy Bear Tea will feature a classic tea setting with delicious appetizers and desserts. Holiday characters will visit with the children and play games. Each child will be gifted a teddy bear and be able to take part in the teddy bear parade. The home will be decorated for the holidays and the grounds will be open for photographs. One unique photo opportunity will be the 100 year old horsedrawn carriage. “We are truly looking forward to the memories families will create,” says Brenda. “We hope this will become a new bayou tradition.”

12 DAYS of Holiday Movies BY DREW MILLER

With the holiday season upon us, let’s review classics to the not-so-sure Christmas movies to watch this season.

THE CLASSICS

A 90’S CHRISTMAS Home Alone (1990) - Eight-year-old Kevin McCallister is accidentally left

home while his family is away on holiday vacation. Kevin discovers burglars are trying to loot his house but he sets booby traps for the would-be invaders. If you say the words “Home Alone” to anyone they will probably instantly think of Macaulay Culkin with his palms on his cheeks as he yells in pain from using aftershave. Culkin definitely makes this 90’s treasure great with his hialrious, awards-nominated performance.

Jingle All the Way (1996) - Howard Langston and Myron Larabee are shopping rivals on Christmas Eve as they both try to purchase the Turbo-man action figure for their respective sons. There can’t be a more 90’s holiday movie than one starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sinbad. In this slapstick, sometimes outrageous comedy, the pair complement each other well during this silly thrill ride on Christmas Eve.

The Santa Clause (1994) - On Christmas Eve, Scott Calvin accidentally

causes Santa Claus to fall off the roof and is forced to take the reins for Father Christmas that night. Tim Allen, one of America’s favorite television dads in the 90s, helped launch this over $470 million franchise with his outstanding comedic performance in this first installment of the Santa Clause Trilogy. His performance returns home-viewers to this 90’s original every year.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) - “The Pumpkin King” and leader of Halloween town, Jack Skellington, stumbles across a portal to Christmas town. While there, he experiences the joy of the holiday and goes back to tell his citizens they should take over Christmas this year.

The creative mind of Tim Burton wonderfully displays this musical through stop-motion animation. Its songs, characters, animation, and story are referenced in pop culture not just during Christmas time, but also throughout the entire year.

A Christmas Story (1983) - During the 1940 Holidays, 9-year-old Ralphie Parker wants a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle. A Christmas Story is one of the most watched and shown holiday movies each year, with networks such as TNT playing the movie for 24-hours-straight from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day. What makes this film a must-watch during the holidays is its humor, nostalgia, memorable quotes and iconic scenes. I “triple dog dare” you to watch this movie this holiday season.

It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) - One Christmas Eve night, George Bailey wishes

he had never been born, but fortunately a guardian angel appears to show George the positive impact he has had on the people of Bedford Falls, New York. One of the oldest Christmas movies that has stood the test of time, It’s a Wonderful Life is loved by audiences and critics alike with an audience and critics score at about 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s funny, uplifting, and teaches us all about the most important gift we have this holiday season—life.

A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) - Charlie Brown, feeling depressed, tries to discover what the true meaning of Christmas is. Like the previously mentioned classics, there is no denying that A Charlie Brown Christmas is timeless, being that it is one of the oldest television specials still being played today. The jazzy soundtrack and banter between the Peanuts kids aren’t the only reasons this special is loved. Like many other holiday classics, nostalgia plays a big factor as many current adults have vivid memories of watching A Charlie Brown Christmas with their families as a child.

6 December 2017 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide

NEWER CLASSICS Elf (2003) - Buddy, a human raised to be an elf at the North Pole, learns of his birth and goes to New York City to meet his biological father. Another holiday movie driven by a strong comedic performance, Elf is made to stand out from other Christmas films by the hysterically over-the-top, Will Ferrell. His quotes and actions during his performance as the childlike Buddy are shared through gifs and memes on the internet every holiday season.

Love Actually (2003) - Ten stories intertwine during the holiday season in this romantic-comedy.

Featuring an ensemble cast that includes: Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley, etc., this movie is appreciated not only for its acting performances, but also for its writing and directing by Richard Curtis. Also, where else can you see Rick from The Walking Dead (Andrew Lincoln) silently hold up note cards for the woman he loves, outside in the cold?

The Polar Express (2004) - A young boy travels on the magical Polar Express train as he starts a journey to the North Pole on Christmas Eve. The Polar Express is vividly shown with astonishing motion capture animation. Accompanied with voice acting by Tom Hanks, this musical fantasy is fun, adventurous, and a holiday must-see.

ARE THOSE CHRISTMAS MOVIES? The Harry Potter Franchise ( 2001-2011) - The orphan Harry Potter, The Boy Who Lived, learns of his wizardly powers and attends the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There, he must harness his abilities and face the imminent danger from those who wish to do harm to him and his friends.

I personally wouldn’t call these films Christmas movies, but many out there will. It could maybe be considered holiday must-sees because of the many winter theatrical release dates in the series, marathons that play during the holiday season, or memorable Christmas scenes— like when Harry receives the invisibility cloak.

Die Hard 1 & 2 (1988, 1990) - John McClane must stop bad guys who use terrorist-like means to take over facilities he just so happens to be located at as well. Now these movies’ Christmas authentications have been widely debated on the internet just like was that dress white and gold or blue and black (It was blue and black). They both have almost entirely nothing to do with Christmas but they take place on Christmas Eve. And like others we have seen on this list, that’s a trend with holiday movies. So they count, right?

New Year's Day in the South Southerners are known for many things, but most of all our traditions that border on superstitious. The things we eat and the actions we take are meant to usher in the good and drive out the bad. The majority of us know what we are supposed to eat and do to welcome in the new year, but other than “because my Granny said so,” do you know the reason behind the tradition?

Black-eyed Peas

Collard Greens/Cabbage

Clean home

First visitor

This legend dates back to the Confederate War, stating that black-eyed peas were all that was left in cupboards after the Yankees raided the Southern farms. The legume is believed to symbolize good fortune to all who enjoy it.

Both of these green foods are very healthy, which is why they are believed to symbolize “good health” in the new year. Because greens are typically late crops, they are also foods that are in season and fresh this time of year.

Of course we tidy up before we have visitors, but don’t pick up a broom on the first day of the new year! Rumor has it that if you so much as take out the trash, it is a symbol of loss, and signifies you will lose what’s important to you.

My grandmother always told me to be ware of the first visitor to my home after the clock strikes midnight. That person is a symbol of what’s to come, be it a potential new husband or a gossip that might lead to poor decisions in the new year.

LETS GO TO THE MOVIES // BY DREW MILLER

D

ecember brings cooler weather, out of–town relatives, decorative lights, filling meals, and of course, ugly sweaters. It’s a great time to reconnect with distant family members and friends who are down for the holidays. Many will throw bonfires, themed Christmas parties, and pot luck dinners with their loved ones this holiday season. There is another way to experience joy with the ones you care about, by taking them on the many adventures this coming December. You can explore the jungle with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart in Jumanji (Dec. 20) and then sing along with Hugh Jackman as he hosts the Barnum & Bailey Circus in (The Greatest Showman, (Dec. 20). You can also experience the near future,

undersized world with Matt Damon (Downsizing, Dec. 22) or go into the past and work alongside Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep as they uncover the truth behind the infamous “Pentagon Papers” (The Post, Dec. 22). And surely, you can team up with Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, and John Boyega to battle the dark side in Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Dec. 15). Before this journey through jungles, circuses, miniature houses, and space, you can dive into the mind of two polarizing figures: Tonya Harding (I, Tonya, Dec. 8) and Tommy Wiseau (The Disaster Artist, Dec. 8). I, Tonya is a dark comedy film, directed by Craig Gillespie (The Finest Hours, Million Dollar Arm) that depicts the rise and fall of infamous U.S. figure skater, Tonya Harding, played by

10 December 2017 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide

Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad, The Wolf of Wallstreet). The movie will go into the details of the events that led to and aftermath of the physical assault of Tonya’s teammate and competitor, Nancy Kerrigan. The red band trailer for the film shows it to be more of a mobster movie than a traditional biographical drama with the reveal of expletive language, fast paced lifestyles, and violence. Margot Robbie looks to shine as Tonya with her introspective fourth wall breaks and voice over narrations. In James Franco’s (Why Him?, True Story) The Disaster Artist, Franco plays Tommy Wiseau, the writer, director, producer, and star of the cult classic film, The Room (2003). Even though The Room is considered one of,

if not the worst movie ever made (29% Rotten Tomatoes score), it is still being showed during midnight screenings in select theaters today. The movie gained attraction from viewers just by how completely terrible it is and the devout cult following keeps it alive today. You have probably seen the famous “Oh, hi Mark” scene before on the internet. In the trailer, Franco is spot on as the awkward sounding Wiseau. He will be joined by his brother, Dave Franco (Nerve, 21 Jump Street), and other comedy regular, Seth Rogan (Neighbors, This Is the End) as the trio will unravel what happened behind the scenes of one of the most epic disasters in cinema history.

Give ve the one Missed YOU MIGHT HAVE

A Ghost Story, written and directed by David Lowery (Pete’s Dragon), stars Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea, Interstellar) and Rooney Mara (Pan, Her). The two play a married couple who live in a small suburban house that they plan on moving out of soon. Unfortunately, C (Affleck) is killed in a car accident just outside their home and M (Rooney Mara) is forced to live on without him. What M doesn’t realize is that the ghost of C (shown by a white sheet over his entire body) still haunts the house and passively watches life go on in their former home. Now, a sheet with cutout holes for eyes over an actor to depict a ghost makes the film seem very low budget. In Hollywood’s case, it is, with a budget of $100,000. The movie doesn’t have many set locations, special effects, dialogue, or other cinematic stars besides Mara and Affleck, but it is beautifully captured along with a compatible soundtrack crafted by violinist, Daniel Hart. It takes you into the lives of the occupants of C’s home much like an artistic fly-on-the-wall documentary. The film at many times can seem like it’s just slowly dragging on. For example, M eats an entire pie in one continuous shot. Critics will agree (90% Rotten Tomatoes score) though that the slow avant-garde storytelling is worth it in the end. It’s being talked about as one of the front-runners for this upcoming awards season. “A Ghost Story” is a genuine, heartfelt, artistic expression of love and loss, and the time it takes embrace or forget both. It is available to rent on Vudu, iTunes, and Amazon. Similar Movie: To the Wonder Like “A Ghost Story”, Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life) has a way of using his unique, experimental sound and camera techniques to tell a story without the use of much dialogue.

RACHEL LECOMPTE, TECHNOLOGY LIBRARIAN, TERREBONNE PARISH LIBRARY

TURTLES ALL THE WAY DOWN BY JOHN GREEN

J

ohn Green is back with another incredible young adult book, Turtles All the Way Down. The ambiguous title and brightly colored cover grabbed my interest immediately, leading me to learn about Green’s newest topic: anxiety. Aza is a sixteen-year-old girl riddled with anxiety and OCD from an early age, often prohibiting her from maintaining healthy relationships and experiencing life as a “normal” teen. She and her best friend Daisy inadvertently become involved in a fugitive hunt involving a one-hundred-thousand-dollar reward. With zero experience in the business of finding criminals fleeing prosecution, Aza and Daisy attempt to solve this convoluted case while juggling their personal lives. The pressures and stresses of this practice cause Aza to “spiral” in her thoughts, allowing readers to experience anxiety alongside her character. Anxiety is something that affects mostly everyone to some degree in his or her lifetime. While the degrees will vary, anxiety is real and can quickly get ugly and unbearable as it festers. John Green has portrayed anxiety and OCD unlike any other author I’ve read thus far. The backstory involving the fugitive hunt was a little over the top, but the anxiety spirals were incredibly well-written and relatable. Becoming increasingly wrapped up in Aza’s thoughts, readers may begin to evaluate their own thought patterns. Yes, this book is that intense. I personally believe that Turtles All the Way Down should come with trigger warnings for those dealing with anxiety or OCD. It’s a difficult book to get through, and I mean that in the best way possible. It’s enlightening, not encouraging, realistic, not hopeful. It’s a book that needs to be read by movers and shakers to help dismiss the stigma of mental illness and advocate for the health of the human. For anyone questioning the validity of their nervousness or angst, this book is a must read.
