Little Melba and Her Big Trombone Written by Katheryn Russel-Brown Illustrated by Frank Morrison

CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH February is Black History Month, and there is no better place to celebrate than at your local library. From the newest novels and memoirs, DVDs and magazines, to free access to Ancestry.com, the library has much to offer. In order to get you and your family in the mood to celebrate, here are a couple of my favorite books by and about jazz music. All three books are available through the Terrebonne Parish Library System, and you can reserve a copy today at www.mytpl.org. Preschool

Melba Doretta Liston was in love with music since she could remember. At seven she finally got her chance to get her own instrument to play and she picked up the trombone--an instrument that was taller than her. But this didn’t stop her from playing. From day one she was in love, and she continued to practice and teach herself how to play. All this hard work paid off and she got to travel the world as a musician and spend her day doing the thing she loved with some of the best musicians around. 4th-6th

Jazz Day: The Making of a Famous Photograph Written by Roxanne Orgill Illustrated by Francis Vallejo

Charlie Parker Played Be Bop Written and Illustrated by Christopher Raschka

In 1958, Esquire magazine came to Harlem to do a story on jazz music. When Art Kane came up with the idea of gathering as many musicians together as he could to photograph them, the musicians jumped at the idea, and 57 of them showed up for the shot. This book chronicles the eventful day through a series of poetry and illustrations. It even includes biographies of many of the musicians and a copy of the photograph at the back of the book.

Charlie Parker was a great musician that knew his way around a saxophone and bebop. You may not know what bebop is yet, but by the end of this book, it will be coursing through your veins and have you tapping your foot to the rhythm. From the fisk fisk to the boomba boomba, you and your littles will love be bopping along

with Charlie.

HEALTHY BITES WITH TGMC | BY JAMIE KING RD, LDN

LET’S GET SNACKING!

“CHOCOLATE-COVERED STRAWBERRY” FROZEN GREEK YOGURT BITES With the start of a new year, we often look for new, healthy snack options to add into our daily routine! Yogurt is a great snack option, and it is a great source of protein and calcium; it also contains potassium. Greek yogurt contains double the protein of traditional yogurt, and it may be better tolerated by lactose-sensitive individuals since it contains less lactose than traditional yogurt. Add some fun to your yogurt by stirring in fruit or other add-ins, but be careful not to add too many sugarsweetened ingredients! Yogurt can provide one of your three daily dairy servings as recommended by USDA’s MyPlate.

DIRECTIONS

INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup nonfat blended strawberry Greek yogurt

STEP 1 In a medium bowl, chop chocolate chips and mix with yogurt.

• 2 teaspoons mini chocolate chips

TIPS:

STEP 2 Spoon mixture into molds, or dollop from a spoon onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. If using molds, tap gently on counter so the yogurt levels smoothly.

Popsicle sticks: There are lots of fun options for sticks! We loved using colorful paper straws, cut into thirds. Toothpicks also worked well. Be creative! Molds: We found that flexible, silicone molds work much better for this recipe than hard plastic candy molds. Have fun trying different sizes and shapes. Also, don’t forget that you don’t need a mold to make these! Simply spoon them onto a parchment-lined baking sheet to make quick and easy frozen yogurt dots. FAMILY FIRST

STEP 3 Add “popsicle sticks” if desired. 4

STEP 4 Freeze until solid. Unmold or peel from parchment immediately after removing from freezer, while still thoroughly frozen. STEP 5 Serve immediately or return to freezer tightly wrapped or packaged in airtight containers.

SYNERGY BANK PRESENTS SYNERGY CENTS WITH PENNY D. PELICAN

FUN FACTS ABOUT VALENTINE’S DAY Valentine’s Day is February 14, and many people across the country will celebrate by handing out Valentine’s Day cards. I like to make cards for my family and friends to let them know how much I care about them. Passing out cards for Valentine’s Day dates back more than 600 years to 1415 when Charles Duke of Orleans wrote a poem to his wife. Today, 145 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged every year in the U.S. alone, with teachers receiving most of those cards. Candy and flowers are also popular gifts to give on Valentine’s Day. Every year, more than 36 million heart shaped boxes of chocolate are sold in the U.S. and $3.3 billion is spent on flowers!

GET MOVING WITH THIBODAUX REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM

KEEPING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential for everyone. When we say the word health, it includes physical as well as mental health. Present day lifestyles have become hectic and confusing.

A healthy lifestyle doesn’t mean a body without any disease or illness, but it does imply a well-maintained body. There are people who have beautiful skin, hair and bodies, and they look fit and healthy in every way. They appear happy and relaxed. Although these individuals might have a busy lifestyle and hectic schedules, it is possible they maintain their day to day activities and food habits in such a way that it reflects on their face and body. The idea behind leading a healthy lifestyle is to give yourself and your children a better chance of good health. Many of the diseases which have become common such as high blood pressure, Diabetes, and high cholesterol are due to unhealthy lifestyles, stress and poor food habits. Here are a few things which are essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle:

Don’t skip breakfast due to lack of time in the morning. Breakfast gives you the right amount of energy and essential nutrients after sleeping for 8-9 hours.

Try to include more fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet, avoid processed or fast foods in excess, eat more freshly made meals and try to drink 8-10 glasses of water per day.

Eat a healthy breakfast in the morning like oats, fruits or anything which has less oil. Never skip your meals. There is a misconception that skipping a meal will help you lose weight. Skipping a meal makes you weaker and hungrier and you end up eating more than required. Skipping a meal has many other bad effects on your digestive system as it gives you acidity or some other complications. FAMILY FIRST

Take ‘movement breaks’. Do not sit for long periods of time or spend more time with electronics than you do moving. This will not only help you lose weight and be more active, but this also has a positive effect on your eyes and brain.

At the Wellness Center, we’re improving the health of the region one person at a time.

And this means...

More game time

Keep track of what you are eating. Do not overeat or starve yourself. Include any kind of physical activity that you may find fun such as walking, jogging, dancing, or aerobics.

More crunch time

Find a hobby such as painting, music or photography. Listen to your favorite music or read your favorite book. Take a break, visit a destination or any place you have been wanting to go. Getting fresh air and enjoying a peaceful atmosphere will aid in a healthy mind and automatically be reflected on your face.

More first times

Get involved in any kind of exercise for at-least 20-30 minutes per day. Walk or use stairs instead of elevators. Physical exercise or walking normalizes blood circulation and heart rate. Instilling these healthy habits into your child’s life from a very young age is important for the success of their health as an adult. A healthy lifestyle will lead you to stay fit, longer and cheerful throughout your life and that of your child!

More party time

Happy Mardi Gras

S.T.E.A.M. ACTIVITY

LAVA LAMP LOVE Show your LOVE for science with this Valentine experiment! With several opportunities for learners of various ages, this experiment is simple and satisfying. For the little learners, pouring and measuring can help with fine motor skills, while the older learners can observe density and chemical reactions. The oil will remain on the top while the water settles on the bottom, because the water is heavier or more dense. Once you add the tablet, it will sink all the way to the bottom, then the chemical reaction will occur. As the tablet and water combine, they create carbon dioxide, which creates bubbles. The bubbles push the water and glitter to the top layer of oil where the bubbles pop and the water falls back down to the bottom.
