Favorite public park to bring your kid to?
In Houma, I like going to the Summerfield Park. Good playground equipment for kids of all sizes. Lots of grassy space to just run. And plenty of shade for picnics. For a change of pace, we like going to the Houma beach at the Bayou Country Sports Park. There we can fish, build sand castles, and play at the splash park.

POV PEOPLE’S CHOICE 2024
Welcome to the second annual People's Choice Edition of Point of Vue!
Oh yeah.. We did it again! Plain and simple: Our small businesses deserve it!
Locals know locals best. We are the ones who live here and shop at the businesses, utilize local services, and attend local events. We want to know what the People's Choice is for your favorite local businesses, local hot spots, local restaurants and so much more! The Point of Vue People's Choice 2024 places the voice of the people first! In nearly 90 categories, we asked you to share your favorites in Terrebonne and Lafourche. No more cookie cutter contests run by national companies that don't care who you are and what your business actually does. Let the locals take care of business!
Through open online voting, we asked our community to share their “Point of Vue” by taking part in the People's Choice process. Nominations took place from April 1 - April 31, 2024 and voting took place from May 18 - 31, 2024. You could only vote once per email address during the two week period. One vote per person is good enough to elect a president; it's good enough for us to select a favorite! The way similar contests have been run in our community in the past did not allow all small businesses to have equal footing. Our contest required no purchase or remembering to vote daily. Let's face it; we all have full time jobs! Who has the time to really do that if they are running a small business? As a small business ourselves, we know what it takes to make ends meet.
We took a close look at what our goal was in holding a contest that would take up so much of our team's time. Would it be worth it? For us, the answer was yes. We realized what the one big goal was this issue - to be able to share as many local businesses as possible with our readers!

This special issue was no small feat for our staff. Hours upon hours went into crunching data with the help of Lauren Hemstreet. Our sales staff is, well, just me! And we do have limited space for ads when it comes to our print issue. And while we had a record number of nominations and votes this year, we know it's still going to take some time to really get our contest “out there”. We aren't a huge, nationwide company. We are taking on this contest as a small business, not unlike like many of yours. We employ less than ten people, who work long hours to make the magic happen!
Where else can you find an outstanding list of so many local businesses all in one place?! Our hope for this contest truly is to bring dollars into the doors of small businesses in our community. It’s great to work from my home office, but if I’m being honest, my favorite place is from a beach condo or anywhere that's beautiful.
Favorite place to lose yourself in Cajun country?
If I'm looking to get outdoors, a trip down to Cocodrie is always a great spot for beautiful scenery and seafood. For a little quiet time, Terrebonne and Lafourche both have beautiful churches that boast stunning architecture and rich history.

Although it doesn't look like it, I love food, and enjoy dining at unique establishments. I always inform visitors to our area that if they want a wonderful meal with excellent service and a charming atmosphere, they MUST make reservations and dine at Cinclare Southern Bistro in Thibodaux!

Downtown Thibodaux is an absolute worthy local spot to take pictures! It provides unique and picturesque backgrounds that complement the style and aesthetic of my online women's boutique - Moda Avenue!
Favorite public park to bring your children to?
We like going to the Bayou Blue Park! It has a zip line and rocking ducks. The girls bring scooters and ride on the track, too.
CREATING A MASTERPIECE

Overlooking the peaceful pond in Acadia Plantation Development, this custom three bedroom, three bathroom new construction began with the homeowners drawing the plans of what would become their dream home. In order to make the dream a reality, they incorporated the help of many local companies and individuals. Only with their help has the dream become reality.
The homeowners contacted ON SITE MPH for help with the official plans, and brought on NU-Way construction and Nicole Himel Interiors to see the project through to completion. The contractor/ construction team of Anthony Giardina and Alfred Fournet made the project
perfect. The attention to detail and “hands on” approach made this a dream project for the homeowners.
The builders incorporated state of the art technology throughout the home. First by applying a liquid vapor membrane to the exterior walls which completely seal the home. This process was followed by a spray foam that encapsulates the home to operate very energy efficiently. This was all followed by installing a variable speed HVAC system, a Halo filtration system and a whole home dehumidifier. Due to the fact that the home is designed so air tight, the builders also incorporated an air exchange system.
The exterior of the home features a
beautiful blue stone courtyard secured by custom gates from a local iron artesian. The homeowner, who loves to garden, gets all the credit for the stunning flower beds that surround the home.
The custom designed kitchen is fit for a chef! Equipped with two islands, one serves as a workstation and the other for informal dining. The kitchen is outfitted in all commercial grade Thermdor appliances. Gorgeous quartzite stone countertops enhance the deep teal color of the islands. The kitchen is adorned with a beautiful custom built coffered ceiling!
Her study is a welcoming space that houses two large storage closets for files and printers, etc. The space is all hers, so
a pale dusty rose color was selected for the room and incorporated art that showcases her love for gardening and biking.
The primary and ensuite were designed to make the homeowners feel like they are retreating to a fivestar hotel, every night! The custom velvet drapes in the room block out the morning light streaming in from the courtyard. When the drapes are open they reveal the view of the gorgeous outdoor space. The drapery adds floor to ceiling softness that welcomes you in. Her closet was a labor of love for the homeowner. She had the best time designing this space to meet her exact needs. It incorporates a sliding ladder and a center island as well as a makeup vanity.
One of the homeowner 's favorite features is the stairway in the garage leading to a private workout room. It makes for convenience when needing to store things in the attic as well. The garage also features the chicest half bath for outdoor entertaining.
The guest room is also adorned with custom drapery by JZ designs. The homeowner had one of these fabrics in her previous home and wanted to use it again in the new house. Jamie Zerinque understood the mission and delivered!

The Krewe of Hercules Festival on the Bayou & Fishing Rodeo is one of our area's largest fishing rodeos with outstanding entertainment! Adult and children ' s divisions with fresh and saltwater categories. Adult tickets are $30 and children's are $15. Fishing rodeo tickets include admission to daily entertainment, which includes Ryan Foret & Foret Tradition on Friday night; Tet Dur, Shorts in December and After Party on Saturday. The jambalaya cook-off will be held on Saturday from 11am - 3pm, with a live auction at 7pm. Daily tickets for entertainment are $10.

GUT CHECK: KEEPING IT HEALTHY
You hear about gut punches, gut reactions and gut health. But which organ is technically the gut? It's the entire gastrointestinal system including your stomach, intestines and colon.
So, why is gut health so important?
• Digestion and nutrient absorption: The gut breaks down food into nutrients absorbed into the bloodstream. A healthy gut microbiome—bacteria and other microorganisms in the gut—helps digestion and absorption of nutrients.
• Immune function: Much of the immune system is located in the gut, helping defend against harmful pathogens and regulating inflammation.
• Mental health: The gut is often referred to as the "second brain" because of the gut-to-brain pathway. The microbiome can impact mood and cognitive function.
• Weight maintenance: An imbalance in gut bacteria may trigger weight gain and obesity.
• Heart health: The gut can also influence cholesterol levels and inflammation related to heart disease.
• Overall well-being: A healthy gut contributes to overall well-being and quality of life. It reduces digestive discomfort, such as bloating and constipation, and promotes regular bowel movements.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) suggests ways to keep your gut healthy:
Watch what you eat.
Foods impact the makeup of your gut. Cultivate a healthy gut with a balanced diet rich in whole, minimally processed foods that are high in fiber and low in sugar and saturated fats.
Fiber is key to a healthy gut by keeping the digestive system moving and promoting regular bowel movements. USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend 25–38 grams of fiber daily for adults.
Gut healthy foods include:
• Green leafy vegetables. Spinach seems to be a gut superfood high in fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
• Fermented foods. Kefir, yogurt, sauerkraut, aged cheese, kombucha and buttermilk contain probiotics that support gut health.
• Eat the rainbow. Include a variety of colorful produce—red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Berries are good choices, with raspberries and blackberries having 7-8 grams of fiber per cup.
NIH guidelines recommend chewing food well before swallowing, eating in moderation, staying hydrated and eating around the same times each day.
Manage stress.
Stress makes it more difficult to digest food. Chronic stress also negatively impacts the gut-brain connection. Try practicing stressreduction techniques such as yoga, meditation and breath work.
Get enough sleep.
Research shows that quality sleep—7 to 8 hours nightly—promotes healthy gut bacteria and benefits overall wellness. Limit what you eat after dark as the gastrointestinal tract is most active in the morning and daytime hours.
Stay active.
Like the rest of your body, the gut and a healthy microbiome function best when you stay physically active. The CDC's Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise weekly for adults.
Keep your gut healthy with a balanced diet rich in fiber and variety of nutrients, regular physical activity, adequate sleep and reduced stress levels. Gut checks benefit your overall health and wellness.
