MARY DOWNER DITCH • MANAGING EDITOR OF POV

I AM THANKFUL… I am thankful for my husband and my son. My husband and I dated for eight years before we were married. We knew we wanted children right away and were blessed with our son Jackson. He is a miracle that reminds us every day to slow down and appreciate the small things.

“If the only prayer you ever say in your life is thank you, it will be enough.” In this month of Thanksgiving, I try to list one thing each day that I am thankful for. Sure, with my sense of humor, some of them aren’t very deep. I am thankful for coffee. Seriously, it’s some good stuff. I know it’s not the best for you, but neither is the monster you encounter before I’ve had my coffee! I am thankful for fluffy socks. I have perpetually cold feet. My husband gave me some crazy fluffy socks last Christmas that I don’t know how I survived without. I am thankful for Disney movies. Ok, go ahead and laugh. But in a world where everything on TV is full of guts and gore, I am happy to be able to turn on these movies and relax. Also, the soundtracks are amazing! But every now and again, some of the deeper and truer ones come out. I am thankful for the way I was raised. Because of the values instilled in me as a child, I have grown to be a hard worker. Both my mother and father are strong individuals who have shown me how to treat others, even in the face of adversity. Through the events of my childhood, I have also been given insight into other people’s lives and am aware of the struggles we all face. I am thankful to my birth mother for choosing life. It took a while for me to add this one to my list, but I constantly say thank you in prayer to my birth mother and her decision. As most everyone is, I am also thankful for my family but more specifically, for this family that chose me through the gift of adoption. I am thankful for unanswered prayers. In my quiet moments, there are always things I talk to God about and questions that are offered in prayer. In my faith, I trust that he knows the answers.

I am also thankful for the individuals that allow us to share their stories in the pages of this magazine. It can be intimidating, letting another person tell your life story. Thank you for trusting us to bring your story to life. This month, we Celebrate Locals. We bring you the story of Missy Lawton, a Thibodaux native who has stepped forward to selflessly advocate on behalf of her son who was born with cystic fibrosis. Learn more about her fight on page 24. We try to never forget those locals who lost their lives defending our country at war. The Terrebonne Garden Club has taken on the project of the Gold Star Mothers of the 1940s, to dedicate the trees planted in Jim Bowie Park to those soldiers killed in action. Read more about the trees and their history on page 38. November is the month we celebrate Veterans Day and celebrate individuals who have dedicated their lives to service. One local goes above that call to serve his country and more, being recently sworn in as Chief Administrative Law Judge for the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission. Learn more about Judge Glynn Voisin on page 44. We also introduce you to Laurie and Ava Perkins. Young Ava is a Type 1 diabetic but also your typical active child. Her mother Laurie has a goal to bring together children in the region who also have Type 1 and 2 diabetes, to form a group to support one another. Learn more about these Sweet Heroes on page 52. As we carry on through this holiday season, I encourage you to slow down and appreciate the world around you. Be sure to let the people who you are most thankful for, know it. Happy Thanksgiving, y’all. POV

A LIFETIME OF MEMORIES BY BONNIE RUSHING | PHOTOS BY MISTY LEIGH MCELROY

Sam and Suzie deGeneres sit on the side porch of their Acadian cottage, their favorite spot for drinking coffee reminiscing about “the house that love built.” As Suzie shares, a lifetime of memories lives here. Purchasing the property eight years prior to moving in during the Spring of 1987, the family has fond memories of Sam cutting the grass and the family enjoying a picnic lunch while dreaming of their yellow raised cottage with white porches.

After enlisting artist and draftsman Ronald Melancon to draw the plans, Floyd Luke built the framework, Joey Yesso completed the interior finishes and Joe Bello did the brickwork, including the home’s double fireplace that rises all the way through the roof. “These extremely talented individuals came into our lives at the right moment, each bringing their special talents,” Suzie recalls. With a vision of creating a timeless home, antique and repurposed materials were used

throughout the cottage. Heart pine floors and stair treads, antique fixtures, vintage door knobs and backplates, an antique ceiling fan from Thatcher Hotel and bricks salvaged from an old Catholic church, are among the details that give this home instant character. Individually hand turned by Sam, the interior staircase spindles were meticulously created as well as the scroll cut corner blocks on the risers. Recently, the couple enlisted master builder Joey Yesso again to complete the vision that they always had for their cottage by adding paneling to the foyer and up the staircase as well as repurposing their attic as a beautiful hobby room with ample built-in storage. The kitchen was renovated during this process as well. “Watching our long held dream become a reality is pure joy,” Suzie says with a smile. “Getting to live in this house has been such a blessing.” POV November 2019 20 povhouma.com

DECISIONS,

DECISIONS So many decisions. The most recent decision I made was: Taco Bell or Subway? Don’t hate me, but I chose Taco Bell. I ate Subway yesterday, and both are five minutes from work, an easy drive, and a quick lunch when you’re pressed for time.

I chose a bean burrito, in case anyone cares. It’s my standard go to if I’m going to choose The Bell. It brings me back to my college days when it was under a buck for a bean burrito, and relatively filling. And about the only restaurant I could afford. But decisions. It’s a word we have tossed around at our house over and over during the past few weeks. Because ultimately, the decisions you choose decide your destiny. So we say things like “you need to make good decisions.” Or “make a good choice.” (I’m pretty sure I should have followed my own advice and chosen something different than Taco Bell, but it’s too late to change that decision.) There’s no one making more decisions than high school kids. If any high school “kids” are reading this, I’m sorry for calling you a kid. I know you think you’re all grown and not deserving of the title “kid” anymore, but I’m sorry. I’m looking at all of you and thinking how I never realized just how young I was when I thought I was so old during my high school years. A handful of high schoolers sat around my kitchen island last weekend, and as I sat there, talking to them, I heard them talk casually about decisions that affect the rest of their lives. Starting in 9th grade, we are now asking “kids” to choose whether they want a college or career path. (Some of these kids are barely remembering to put on deodorant and we are asking them to choose what they want them to do for the rest of their lives!) From there, we say, “choose a path, pick a college, choose a major.” And in the middle of all those choices, choose good friends and possibly a spouse. As a grown adult, if someone told me I would have to make all those choices all over again, I would hyperventilate. The pressure of what to choose would overwhelm me. I ran into a friend from college a few weekends ago. We graduated in the same major. He asked how I was using my degree. I laughed and replied “not at all.” My major in Mass Communication sits dormant while I work as the owner of a local business. He laughed and said he

Life is Short, Buy the Shoes! doesn’t really use his either, as he’s more of a technical writer, now. But here we are, 20 years down the road, having made what might seem to be not the right decision and making the best of it. So maybe the decisions we make are important, but don’t define us. It’s sometimes the smallest decisions that lead us to the biggest paths in our lives. A quick decision to go somewhere where we meet someone who one day becomes the person we marry. Maybe it’s the decision of who you are that matters most. And not who you plan to be. I asked that to one of the “kids” debating her future choices. But are you kind today? Are you honest today? Are you loving well today? Make those decisions today and the rest will follow. And the success of the right path will come when you make the small decisions that eventually become your road of life.

So you can maybe pick the wrong degree or the wrong career and still be the person you were always meant to be. Our kindness and love matter more than we thought they ever would. I still remember the teacher who told me that I really did have valuable opinions. I never asked her if she chose the right career path or if she was using her degree. But her encouragement to a slightly rebellious 16-year-old girl stayed with me the rest of my life. So Taco Bell was a bad choice. But the smile I gave the girl at the drive through was a good choice. And maybe that’s all I need to know for today. POV

LENDING HER VOICE

November 2019 24 povhouma.com

Where are they now? Each November, we highlight individuals from the bayou area that have spread their wings and brought their talents to other areas around the world. This year, we introduce you to Missy Lawton, a cystic fibrosis advocate, who pushes for a better tomorrow for her young son James.

Specializing in Alzheimer’s & Dementia Care

LOCALLY OWNED & OPERATED

BY DREW MILLER | PHOTOS SUBMITTED

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a chronic health condition that causes thick mucus to build up in the body, which causes problems with breathing and digestion, according to marchofdimes.org. Both parents must have the CF gene to pass along the genetic disorder to their child. Although it is considered a rare disease, 30,000 people in the United States have CF, and about 1 in 4,000 babies are born with it, according to the March of Dimes organization. There is currently no cure for the disease. Most people don’t know or understand CF unless it affects them or someone they care for. More common life-threatening diseases receive most of America’s attention and donations, but CF doesn’t receive a significant amount of government funding for research or drug development compared to more common diseases. That’s why parents of a child with cystic fibrosis often must inform the public on CF and help raise money for research, all while dealing with the multiple challenges that come with raising a child with CF. Thibodaux native Missy Lawton dedicates her time and effort to making the lives of cystic fibrosis patients easier, safer and more fulfilled through her advocacy.

“Since our father moved to The Suites, we have felt at ease and are so blessed to have found a place that treats him like family. He has received wonderful care and the staff is so helpful."

“It was just a shock to us,” Missy remembers. “We thought it would have come up in our family prior. We’re both medically inclined, educated. It just completely took us off guard.” On March 2, 2016, James Lawton IIII was born with cystic fibrosis, and his parents were determined to provide the best possible life for him. “We were bound and determined that our son was going to get the best medical care he could ever have,” Missy shares. “We’re going to have a positive outlook. He was going to have a great life...And that’s what was going to happen.”

A retired nurse, Missy provides most of James’s medical care. Daily activity at home includes sterilizing equipment, breathing treatments and medicine intake. “You're getting medicine together before you can even get ready to have a normal day,” she says. “And then at night, it's the same thing.” That’s just on days when James is healthy, Missy says, if he is feeling sick, an array of problems can occur. But James’s health is currently trending in a positive direction, which Missy attributes to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the organization she advocates for. “What cystic fibrosis is, basically, a combination of two gene mutations that cause a sodium chloride defect in the

body. It basically dehydrates cells of their mucus secretions throughout the whole body,” Missy explains. “If you really think about it, secretions are just so important in multiple organs for transport and mobility. The thing about cystic fibrosis, there are all kinds of different mutations.” When James was born, there were no medicines to treat CF at the cellular level for his certain class of mutation. But Missy

and Sid came across the non-profit CF Foundation, which receives no government funding. They discovered that not only does 89 percent of every dollar the foundation earns goes directly to research and drugs for CF, but also the organization would soon release medicine that treated their son’s specific mutation at the cellular level. Thanks to Orkambi, the medicine developed through funds raised by the

foundation that James started taking in September 2018, he is in better health. “He gained several pounds just from a month of being on Orkambi. He has gotten through several respiratory infections beautifully, no hospital admissions,” Missy says. “We actually did a baseline CT on him this past spring, whereas 40 percent of CF kids normally have some nonreversible damage in their lungs by the age of three – he had none.” Missy is highly involved with the CF Foundation, spreading awareness, helping raise money and giving her talents in any other way she can. “If you don't spread awareness, then other people won't know, and they won't care. And I feel like if they don't, we will lose everything that the foundation has worked so hard to do,” she says. “We’re close to finding a cure.”

But by the time we’re deep into November, I start to get the envie for pumpkin. No, not the latte kind or just the pumpkin-flavored kind – I’m talking real pumpkin, y’all! Cooler weather also makes

me want to snuggle up on the weekends with my mug of coffee and a delicious warm breakfast. In my opinion, the best option when it comes to pumpkin for breakfast is pumpkin waffles. Easy to make and oh so delicious! For another twist, make waffles for dessert, topping with simple vanilla ice cream and a bit of caramel drizzle!

PUMPKIN WAFFLES Ingredients • 2 cups all purpose flour • 1/4 cup brown sugar • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1–2 teaspoons pumpkin spice • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 3 large eggs, separated • 1 1/3 cup milk • 1/4 cup maple syrup • 3 tablespoons butter melted • 1 cup canned pumpkin

Directions 1. C ombine the dry ingredients. Place all dry ingredients in a

medium-large mixing bowl and combine them very well. 2. C ombine wet ingredients. Add all wet ingredients to a separate

bowl and use a whisk to mix them very well until smooth. 3. M ake the batter. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry

ingredients and use a rubber spatula to fold them together just until combined. (The batter will be thick and lumpy, that’s fine.) 4. M ake the waffles. Follow your waffle iron’s manufacturer’s

instructions to preheat the iron, and to bake the waffles. Make sure to grease the iron well!

Notes: Since pumpkin waffles have a heavy batter, cook these on medium-high heat for a little longer than

regular waffles. Bake the waffles until they are crispy on the outside. They will crisp up more once they’re out of the waffle maker and soften back up if left at room temperature for too long. The waffles might look a bit gooey when cut into while warm, but if you tear them you should see how fluffy they are. November 2019 34 povhouma.com

Along a quiet stretch of bayou, just off old Bayou Black Drive, stand rows of live oak trees. The trees stand at attention, covered in evergreen foliage, a solemn reminder of the sacrifice of the sons of Terrebonne Parish in World War II. We often hear the phrase Gold Star Mothers, these days mostly in period movies, but does the current generation understand the term? During World War I, families would place stars in their windows to let the outside world know their beloved family member, perhaps a husband or son, was away fighting in the war. Blue stars were hung for each member in the armed forces. If the tragic news came that their loved one was killed in action, a gold star was superimposed over the blue to denote the loss to all who visited. The gold star symbolized the “honor and glory accorded to the person for his supreme sacrifice to his country.” It was during the time period shortly after World War II in the 1940s that a group of Gold Star Mothers, along with the Terrebonne Garden Club, planted oak trees at Memorial Park along Bayou Black in Houma for the sons they lost in the war.

Twenty-one live oak trees still proudly stand in the park now known as Jim Bowie Park.

SHINING A LIGHT ON THE STORY Linda Brazier of the Terrebonne Garden Club set out around eight years to ago to confirm a rumor she had heard that the perfectly planted rows of oaks in Jim Bowie Park had been planted in honor of men who died in World War II. It was through making contact with Jessie Ledet that Linda realized the rumors were in fact true. Mr. Jessie had in his possession a yellowing newspaper clipping of two groups of Gold Star Mothers planting young trees. Mr. Jessie’s mother is pictured in the clipping, planting a tree for his brother Druis who was killed in WWII.

REGISTERING THE TREES The Terrebonne Garden Club has set the wheel in motion to register the trees with the Live Oak Society. The Live Oak Society is a membership organization for mature Live Oak trees founded in 1934 to “advance the culture, distribution, preservation, and appreciation of the southern live oak

Terrebonne High School. Linda and her husband have researched the names diligently over the years to confirm they were all in fact residents of the parish. There are only seven names they are currently unsure of.

Members of the Terrebonne Garden Club gathered recently to measure and number the trees in Jim Bowie Park. All 21 oaks at Jim Bowie Park meet the requirements. The Garden Club member Mary Jane Peters is actively filing the paperwork for the registration.

The Terrebonne Garden Club is looking into options for plaques to be placed on or near the trees. A ceremony will be held to rededicate the trees, hopefully in conjunction with the club’s Tour of Gardens event. The Garden Club will be asking descendants of the men killed in action to join in the ceremony as they return the trees to the public as a grand memorial. POV

THANKSGIVING

On October 15 in Washington D.C., members of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission held a ceremony to formally swear in their new Chief Administrative Law Judge (CALJ). This distinguished honor is significant to us in the Bayou Region, as the judge who acquired that position on Pennsylvania Avenue is from our community. Houma native Judge Glynn F. Voisin has dedicated virtually his entire life to service and justice, all while maintaining his core values and priorities. “My dad was a World War II veteran, and he and my mother instilled the morals and values that I have. I attribute a lot to them,” Glynn shares. “My priorities in life are my faith, my family, my community, my country and of course, my profession.” Glynn also inherited his work ethic from his parents. While a full-time student studying pre-law at Nicholls State University, he worked as a full-time school bus driver, full-time dispatcher, clothing salesman and an assistant for a professor. He would dispatch from 11 p.m. until 7 a.m. Then he would start his bus route, which led him to Nicholls to drop off college students. While on campus all day, he would assist his professor during his spare time. Following his day at school, he would drop off his schoolmates back in Houma and complete his Houma bus route. And on Saturdays and during the holidays, he worked as a clothing salesman.

in his draft selection if he joined the Marine Corps. After joining, he was sent to Quantico, Va. between his junior and senior years of school for a 12-week platoon leaders class training. After his college graduation, he was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Following his officer training again at Quantico, exercises in the Mediterranean and Caribbean and survival training in the Philippines, Glynn was deployed to Vietnam. There, he served as an intelligence watch officer, watching and tracking enemy movement. “I matured very quickly,” he smiles, recalling his experience overseas. The young officer was stationed in New

Orleans following his three years of active duty with a tour in Vietnam. He then attended Tulane University Law School. After his graduation from law school in 1977, he traveled to Newport, R.I. to attend Naval Justice School, which subsequently led him to join the Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps. As a JAG officer throughout his time of active duty during Desert Storm, his unit was responsible for arresting and prosecuting deserters. Glynn says they convicted all 29 who were charged. He retired from the Marine Corps Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1997. The proven JAG officer’s decorated career is impressive, but perhaps even more noteworthy is his career outside of his military service. He has had an illustrious

career in law despite facing adversity. Glynn was made state judge before he left for Desert Storm after making a name for himself as a Terrebonne Parish assistant district attorney and a Louisiana assistant attorney general. However, after he returned from his service, he learned a new administration had filled his position. Having no income while trying to provide for his family and put his children through school, he worked as a janitor at Vandebilt Catholic High School while negotiating with the state to get his appointment back. He later got his position back, serving as the Louisiana Workers’ Compensation Judge until 2004. The judge went on to hold many titles since November 2019 47 povhouma.com

“To be a good judge, you need to be a good listener. You need to be fair and impartial,” Glynn says. “I enjoy meeting with the people and trying to give them justice, whatever their cause. I want to help them achieve a just, fair and impartial goal.” For his current position in D.C., Glynn is the head of the nationwide Division of Judges and is “solely responsible for the management and general administrative supervision of the CALJ office and the

three branch offices to ensure the most expeditious and thorough conduct of proceedings coming before the Division,” reads a statement by the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission. “I’m excited and anxious to get started,” the 72-year-old shared before he was formally sworn in. “I’m looking forward to the challenges; I’m looking forward to the opportunities that I’m going to have there.” A Tulane adjunct instructor, mentor to new and experienced judges and lawyers and guest speaker at conferences, Glynn aims to pass along all the knowledge he has acquired over his several decades in law to the younger generation. “I love young minds; I enjoy working with them,” he shares.

When asked to describe his career in law in one word Glynn said, “service.” Glynn and his wife Paula made sure to instill their values in their children; the most important value being faith – which got them through a tough time when tragedy struck the Voisin family. Their son Nicholas, who was commissioned to the Marine Corps and served in tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, died due to a head-on collision in 2010. “Faith–we have a deep, deep faith and believe that God is going take care of us. And that’s what we relied upon,” Glynn remembers on what got the family through the tragedy. “And family and friends were very supportive of what was going on during that time.” Although he is a federal judge, instructor, mentor and public speaker, Glynn makes sure to make enough time to stay true to all his priorities.

Nine-year-old Ava Perkins has never known a life without type one diabetes, nor has she known a life without an outpouring of love and support from her family, friends and “dia-buddies.”

“I have some diabetes friends, and we call them ‘dia-buddies,’” Ava says. What began as a search for such “diabuddies” turned into the beginning of a group designed to bring together local diabetic children as a way showing them that they are not alone in their journey. The idea for Sweet Heroes, an organization dedicated to holding social events for type one and type two diabetic children ages 17 and under in Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes, began circulating in the mind of Ava’s mother Laurie Perkins back in March of this year. Being the only child at her school with diabetes, Ava did not have any local friends who shared her condition. Laurie’s mother told her of a friend close to Ava’s age whose young grandson Eli has diabetes. When the families attended a walk together, Eli’s family told Laurie of the many events that their small hometown offered for children with diabetes. Upset over the lack of local events for diabetic children, Laurie decided to start her own group.

[about] what’s going on and diabetes, and also there’s snacks upstairs,” Ava says. Ava was born with a rare disease known as hyperinsulinism, which the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) defines as “the most frequent cause of severe, persistent hypoglycemia in newborn babies, infants, and children.” At 33 weeks of her pregnancy with Ava, Laurie noticed that her legs and feet were swollen. She was admitted into the hospital due to high blood pressure, where she found out that she had pre-eclampsia and would have to deliver Ava prematurely.

802 HWY 182 Houma, LA 70364 (985) 851-1242 www.spehouma.com

Because of her condition and the fact that Ava was born prematurely, the doctors checked Ava’s blood sugar in her first hour of life, which registered at 14–a fatally low number. Laurie says learning of her daughter’s hyperinsulinism diagnosis was “surreal.” “Everything just happened so quick that

I’m just more of a realistic person. I’m like ok, tell me what’s going on. Give me all the facts. Give me all the options. Let’s get a game plan,” Laurie says. When medication failed to show signs of curing Ava’s disease, she had 98 percent of her pancreas removed at one month old. With most of her pancreas gone, Ava would be a type one diabetic for the rest of her life. Laurie said Ava has always been in tune with how she is feeling and what is going on with her body. By the time Ava was five, she was able to check her own blood sugar. Ava wears an insulin pump called an OmniPod on her arm that delivers her insulin through the use of a handheld Personal Diabetes Manager (PDM), as well as a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) that keeps track of her blood sugar levels. Ava also keeps a bag with her at all times that contains glucose tablets and an emergency glucose shot.

“We have greatly enjoyed working with Rushing Media as we expanded our presence in the social media and print markets. Gulf Coast Orthopedics needed to have a stronger presence in print and online platforms. We are an orthopedic clinic and we wanted our messaging and marketing to reflect the services we provide to the people we would like to treat. We chose Rushing Media because of their high level of expertise in ad creation and guidance on opportunities to provide the biggest return for advertising dollar. We have not been disappointed with our relationship with Rushing Media. We have expanded our patient capture area, increased our clinic volume and established ourselves as a leader in Orthopedic care in the Bayou Region. I do not believe any of these things would have occurred without the help of Rushing Media and the impressive personal attention they provide to us.”

- LAURIE PERKINS

For Ava, the most challenging parts of living with her condition have been the questions that she receives and the changing of needles on her equipment. Laurie says she tried to teach her daughter to educate those who ask her questions, explaining to them that she needs her devices to keep herself alive. Sometimes Ava will explain her condition if she feels like it, but if she does not feel up to doing so, she said she will tell them to “Google it.” “Little kids ask a bunch of questions. ‘What’s that?’ ‘What’s this?’” Ava says. “It’s really hard to explain because it’s a whole lot of details, and I’m like, ‘Well, I have diabetes, and if you want to know what it is, search it or ask your parents.’” The key to navigating a life with diabetes is open communication and trust between Ava and her parents.

of herself. Before she eats any meal, she and her mother check her blood sugar through an app on Ava’s phone that works in conjunction with her CGM. If her blood sugar is high, they stick to low-carb foods. If it is low, Ava can have more sugary foods. Her blood sugar levels also determine how much insulin Laurie will give her. “Every day, every meal is different,” Laurie says. Living with a condition like diabetes, it was beneficial for Ava to find friends with whom she could relate and speak about her condition. Ava said her friend Eli is her inspiration. It was Eli’s CGM machine that inspired the Perkins family to get Ava a CGM of her own. In addition, Ava and Eli act as pen pals.

“We always talked about like where we put our CGMs and stuff at, and just when I talk to other diabetics, I can know that I can count on them, and they know what it’s like,” Ava said. Laurie knew she needed to create Sweet Heroes for children like Ava to find people who understand what it is like to live with diabetes. She said it can be overwhelming for families of newly diagnosed children.

“I just wanted them to know that it’s going to be ok. Like there’s enough medicine out there. There’s enough tools out there. There’s enough education out there. There’s enough support out there,” Laurie says. She wants other parents of children dealing with special needs to know they are not alone. “Love them hard. Love them long… It’s ok if you break. It’s going to be ok. Love them no matter what. Support them in any way possible. If you need help, it’s ok to ask. You are your child’s advocate,” Laurie says. Laurie always tells her daughter that she can do anything that anyone else can do, and the sky is the limit. In her free time, Ava enjoys gymnastics, basketball and playing outside or playing with her toy horses. Laurie said her daughter is her hero. “She literally is the strongest, bravest person that I know, and the craziest part is like, she doesn’t even see it. She just does it,” Laurie says. Ava has her own advice for children who share her condition. “Believe in God because God has a plan for you, and…you can just count on your friends and family,” Ava says. POV

HEALTH BENEFITS OF PUMPKIN 3. Can help keep you full Pumpkin is high in fiber! One cup of pumpkin has about 7 grams of fiber. The recommended intake of fiber is between 25-35 grams per day. Fiber is needed for healthy digestion, it helps to lower cholesterol, and keeps us fuller for longer.

Pumpkin has a ton of health benefits to add nutrition to your diet and boost the taste of many things. It complements both sweet and savory foods and is fairly low in calories. Here are five awesome benefits of pumpkin: 1. It is high in Vitamin A Eating pumpkin is good for your eyes! One cup of pumpkin has over 200 percent of the recommended daily intake of vitamin A, which is important for eye health and night vision. Pumpkin’s bright orange color comes from its high betacarotene concentration and beta-carotene is a carotenoid (an antioxidant) and a precursor of vitamin A. Beta-carotene also helps protect us from the sun’s harmful UV rays. 2. Also packed with Vitamin C Pumpkin is a good source of vitamin C, an antioxidant known for strengthening the immune system and boosting collagen production. It also improves iron absorption and studies show it reduces oxidative stress, which can prevent premature aging. One cup of pumpkin contains 19 percent of the recommended daily intake.

4. It is great for your muscles Pumpkin also contains magnesium, a mineral that is very important for a variety of different functions in the body like energy creation, muscle relaxation, and nervous system regulation. In one cup you get 14 percent of your daily value. 5. It has more potassium than a banana Pumpkin is high in potassium, a mineral necessary for muscle contraction, good digestion, water balance, and a healthy blood pressure. As with magnesium, if you’re active and are depleting electrolytes, like potassium, it’s even more critical to restore levels. There are over 500 milligrams of potassium in a cup of canned pumpkin—more than what you would get in a large banana.

HOW TO ENJOY HOLIDAYS

IN PROPER ORDER There I was, one day in late September just past, uneventfully driving up to a local Wal-Mart. I thoughtfully parked my car at a healthy distance, leaving the nearby spaces for those who need to park closer to the entrance, including the lady selling World’s Finest Chocolate on behalf of her device-distracted kids in case she needed a quick resupply back of her SUV. Then, I thoughtfully took a shopping buggy from the parking lot to reduce by one the number of carts workers needed to corral and return indoors. Once inside the automatic doors, I thoughtfully pulled a couple of antibacterial wipes from the dispenser to swab the handle of the cart to prevent my spread of hand-carried germs and save others from possible illness and suffering. Content with my thoughtful entrance, I proceeded to satisfy my shopping list. I made a beeline for my first stop—the cat food aisle. Before I spied Tender Vittles, Meow Mix, Fancy Feast, and the in-store Special Kitty brand, however, something caught the corner of my eye on the Christmas shelves. And then it caught the corner of my other eye. Then it spread into my dilated pupils, onto my retina, and inside to my brain. And I got confused. To regain my bearings, I closed my eyes and watched light trapped inside my eyeballs make spiraling circles on the back of my eyelids. I began to hear four high-pitched musical notes played over and over again. And then, a deep, gravelly voice spoke: “You are about to enter another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land of imagination. Next stop…” “Next stop is Christmas?” I blurted out, eyes and mouth wide open. An elderly woman pushing a squeaky buggy pulled up nearby and responded, “Mais, I can’t believe that, me, neither! The Butterballs didn’t even come on sale yet!” Her voice was deep and gravelly. Forget about turkeys, I thought. I might not have been confused to see some orange candy, some pumpkin-shaped things, and some costumes and masks. After all, on this day in late September, Halloween would be the next major shopping holiday, right? And then there’s Thanksgiving in November, right? “Ça c’est correct,” she said, gravelly. Instead, we faced an aisle of ornaments, lights, wrapping paper, and artificial trees! Has Black Friday has become Black Autumn? How can society stand for the subordination of Halloween and Thanksgiving with this ultra-early Christmas shopping craze? Confounded and resolutely not yet in the spirit, I left the Christmas aisle, grabbed some cans of Special Kitty, and then headed toward the other side of the store to find the human food. I drove up and down each aisle on the human side of the store, November 2019 60 povhouma.com

dropping items mindlessly off my list into the buggy. My attention was more focused on how I could retaliate for this anachronism of major American holidays. Should I stock-up on orangewrapped candy from Aisle 23? Should I buy an off-sale turkey at $2.39 per pound from the floor freezer? After two hours and several “What’s taking so long?” texts from home, I decided to give up scheming and check my list against the buggy. A can of Bush’s brand pinto beans? Check. A jar of Nina’s brand peanut butter? Check. A bottle of Santa Maria Valley California merlot? Check. A pack of… And it hit me like a bat on National Piñata Day. Nina’s, pintos, and Santa Maria? “Forget the ornaments and wrapping paper!” I exclaimed, clenching my shaking fists.” Resist the subversion of our autumn shopping days! Celebrate Columbus Day on October 14th!” There was a bit of silence among my fellow shoppers. Then a squeaky buggy drove up near mine. “Mais, leave these people alone or I’ma call security, me!” It was a deep and gravelly voice. I quietly proceeded to check out and pay. An hour later, content with my thoughtful holiday activism, I commenced to buy a couple of World’s Finest bars from the lady at the entrance whose fund-raising kids were on their iPhones, likely watching history videos about Columbus. If you go holiday shopping this month, join me in remembering that Thanksgiving and other national holidays come before Christmas. And don’t forget the cat food, especially if you missed National Cat Day on October 29th. POV
